2024.05.15 23:49 BiPolarBear17 RSC #68 - Oldies But Goldies

After 84 years of wanting to host one and drafting up line-ups time and time again I'm finally doing an nf of classics! Every single song in this selection is more than old enough to legally buy a vape or for me to serve them alcohol. Whittling down this selection was SO HARD and I had every temptation to make it three times as long, but I managed to chop it down to 10 stunners that still span a wide variety of genres & eras!
Year Artist Song Link
1976 Leon Ware Musical Massage Here!
1979 Patrice Rushen Haven't You Heard Here!
1991 Adeva Don't Let It Show On Your Face Here!
1994 World Renown How Nice I Am Here!
1994 Kylie Minogue Confide In Me Here!
1997 Zhané Crush Here!
2000 All Saints Pure Shores Here!
2001 Aaliyah More Than A Woman Here!
2002 Sugababes Freak Like Me Here!
2003 MINMI Another World Here!
They say oldies but goldies, but these oldies might be silveries, bronzies or nothingies too! That's because for voting, I'm stealing the medal system from the dugliest of ucklings again pt. 5 (love u monarch)! In case you haven't used this system before, the medals are:
Please do not be afraid to give out nothings to every song if you don't like any! Maybe hag tea is NOT valid. Feel free to send your votes to me on either Reddit or Discord (BiPolarBear#0017).

2024.05.15 21:41 Chair1511 My Clancy Pre-Album Ranking

I know I'm super late to this trend but I wanted to wait until all of singles were released to do a pre-album ranking. Since the listening parties are this Friday I figured I would just go ahead and throw my hat into the ring.
  1. Midwest Indigo - This one seems to be the most anticipated songs off the album and I can see why. Ever since I saw the name I've wanted this song. I'm hoping it'll be the Morph of this album.
  2. Next Semester - I just love this song. It's a perfect song and is probably top 10 TOP for me.
  3. The Craving - This one for sure is the strangest song title wise and we joked about it for a while but after hearing the live version I absolutely love this song and I can wait to hear the live version.
  4. Paladin Strait - This is another one of the most anticipated songs on record and for good reason. The final song in the story and the true end to an era. It's going to be amazing just like all of their album closers but usually the album closer don't end up as my favorites of the album surprisingly enough. I know it'll be great and it'll probably be one of TOP's best but for now I'll put it here.
  5. At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb - I'm not the first to make this connection but it reminds me of We Don't Believe What's On TV and that's by favorite BF song.
  6. Oldies Station - It reminds me of Legend and I absolutely love that song. I'm hoping it'll be like Legend and be a super powerful and emotional song in an upbeat and hopeful package.
  7. Lavish - It sounds super interesting and I could just imagine it sounding similar to Backslide beat and genre wise given the title and video sneak peak.
  8. Overcompensate - a great song and a great start to this album and era.
  9. Backslide - I really like Backslide, it's a fun song with a great flow and is so emotionally and lyrically dense. I'm hoping that the rest of the album will follow through being emotionally powerful like this song and especially Next Semester is.
  10. Routines in the night - I hate that have to put some of these song this low in the ranking but I think that's a good testament to how great I think this album will be. I think this will be a great song but lower down in the list comparatively. Based on what I've heard other people saying this song could be the Neon Gravestones of the album.
  11. Vignette - Super Interesting title wise and I feel like it could be another somber song where it retails a moment of weakness or mental vulnerability.
  12. Snap Back - This one to me sounds like it could be similar to Overcompensate. A high energy and a song where Clancy is truly feeling himself and is ready to take down Dema.
  13. Navigating - based on title alone it seems like the most basic song of the album. I'm super it'll still be good but I think it has the least potential given title alone.

2024.05.12 04:26 Creepy_Alarm9084 Looking for a wedding DJ recommendation

Hey hey!
Going to keep it short and to the point of possible:
I’m the groom that has one task, book a DJ for the wedding. We’re getting married in Boulder on a flower farm, so I’m looking for a DJ + equipment. Wanting a very lofi/oldies love song cocktail hour, house/dance remixes of classic wedding party songs, then a vibey/dubby finale to kick the grandmas out to close it out. I’ve contacted a local agency that does these things, and the vibe seems very “I’m 50 years old, i can totally make this happen”. Then the follow up email is videos of cringey Batmitzvah party’s and corporate events with 90% DJ yelling to clap your hands… not the damn vibe.
We’re a couple that really appreciates the scene, I really don’t want to let her down, and we have a pretty solid budget. I was originally looking at B list acts, but haven’t got any responses from bookers/managers and not sure how the equipment would play into it.
Anyone have any advice?

2024.05.11 07:49 NotAllSeeingEye How to prepare for Mt. Apo?

Mt. Apo is the top of my bucket list as a hiker. I had been hiking since 2021 pero mga minor hikes lang. Pero marami rami na (more than 15 mountains). A coor said na pwde nakong magready for this and compared sa ibang mountains sa Top 5 highest mountains sa Philippines, Apo is easier. Also nakakakita ako ng mga oldies na kinaya nman ang Apo so as a person in my late 30s feeling ko kaya ko nman

2024.05.09 19:43 Schizard A Useless vent.

Edit: Question… I feel like my father is only mitigated as an issue when I have a strong other attachment.when I was young thoughts and books when psychotic the grand purpose and recently an online fling. When I try to relax now the idea of my father’s attention shuts me down. I need a pacifier…
I just ended an online chat only relationship. I also just finished my semester. Maybe I have BPD or something. I feel so unstable. When I was young I was an overthinker. In the depths of psychosis I had a depth of devotion and passion. Now I feel like I’m empty.
I am craving someone to see me and hold me. I said yesterday to myself that I’d read my old psychosis journal. But at the moment I can only eat and watch TikTok.
What are some activities that ground you? I’m going to try and see some…:
Meditate Read(but what) Walking(kinda scary to go in public) Draw/paint(….this one feels the promising) Journal Clean/dance
So I have a list. But all I want to do is waste time.
Anyhow thanks for listening. I’ll vibe to some oldies now.

2024.05.07 23:24 drumlicks HELP! Noob with gig in 2 days-

Hey, this is one of those instances where I have gotten the gig before I've acquired the skills - it's for a state land and title division conference, they want "country, oldies and pop"- I've been a musician for over 30 years, the country I've got a handle on, but I need a good semi-retro dance song list I can beat match with- any help is greatly appreciated -

2024.05.05 15:15 Organic_Cow7313 My Ranking of Carpenters Albums! (not including: Compilation and Christmas Albums, and the As Time Goes By Album)

My Ranking of Carpenters Albums! (not including: Compilation and Christmas Albums, and the As Time Goes By Album)
The Carpenters Duo standing next to their Van
After listening to every Album multiple times, i decided to rank them, and boy i gotta tell you it was really hard to rank them, there are lots of good Albums from the Carpenters (my ranking might change in the future, even though im pretty sure it will stay like this) im not ranking the Album by how much songs i like in it, but the Album as a whole. Please don't be mad/sad if your favorite Album is ranked low, as i said, there is no bad Album and Song, please don't feel attacked. I decided to do a ''Top 3 Songs'' for the first Three Albums on this list. The 1,2,3,4,5/5 means how much points i would give to a song 5/5 being the best, and 1/5 meaning that i don't like the songs (there are only 3, 1/5 songs)
I listen and like Jazz, Pop, Classical, three things that the Carpenters capture in their Music.

11. Lovelines

Lovelines Album 1989
Carpenters last studio Album, and last Album on my list. To me all of the songs sound similar to each other, what i like about this Album though, is how there's lots of Jazz. My Favorite songs from this Album would have to be: ''Lovelines'', ''You're The One'' and ''If I Had You''.
1. Lovelines - 4/5
2. Where Do I Go From Here - 3/5
3. The Uninvited Guest - 2/5
4. If We Try - 3/5
5. When I Fall In Love - 2/5
6. Kiss Me The Way You Did Last Night - 3/5
7. Remember When Lovin' Took All Night - 2/5
8. You're The One - 4/5
9. Honolulu City Lights - 2/5
10. Slow Dance - 2/5
11. If I Had You - 3/5
12. Little Girl Blue - 1/5

10. Voice Of The Heart

Voice Of The Heart Album 1983
There's not alot i can say about this Album, the Album sounds beautiful, but the Album has the same problem like the ''Lovelines'' Album, most of the songs sound similar to each other (tempo, instrument, and theme -wise) even though there are lots of very beautiful songs, like: ''Now'', ''Sailing On A Tide'', ''Two Lives'', ''Prime Time Love'' and ''Your Baby Doesn't Love You Anymore''.
1. Now - 4/5
2. Sailing On A Tide - 3/5
3. You're Enough - 2/5
4. Make Belive It's Your First Time - 1/5
5. Two Lives - 4/5
6. At The End Of A Song - 2/5
7. Ordinary Fool - 2/5
8. Prime Time Love - 4/5
9. Your Baby Doesn't Love You Anymore - 3/5
10. Look For Your Dreams - 2/5

9. Passage

Passage Album 1977
This is a interesting Album, before making this list i thought that it would be on the last place. It is different from any other Carpenters Albums (i learned from a Book about the Carpenters, that it was intentional) In this Album you got everything, like Jazz, Disco, Country, a song about Aliens, and even a Opera song! There is one song that also is ''Interesting'', im talking about ''Man Smart Woman Smarter'', i think this song is weird, the instrument choice is something else, and the instruments sound off-beat sometimes, the lyrics is also questionable, the whole song is questionable, this is the only bad Carpenters song in my opinion (even though the melody isn't bad) I Love the Double Karen Vocals in ''Two Sides''.
My Favorite songs are ''All You Get From Love Is A Love Song'', ''I Just Fall In Love Again'', ''On The Balcony...'' and ''Calling Occupants...''.
1. B'wana She No Home - 3/5
2. All You Get From Love Is A Love Song - 3/5
3. I Just Fall In Love Again - 4/5
4. On The Balcony Of The Casa Rosada/Don't Cry For Me Argentina - 3/5
5. Sweet, Sweet Smile - 3/5
6. Two Sides - 3/5
7. Man Smart Woman Smarter - 1/5
8. Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft (The Reconized Anthem Of World Contact Day) - 5/5

8. Made In America

Made In America Album 1981
This is a good Album, it sounds new and fresh, i think its a good Album, it has the 80s sound, while it also has the Carpenters sound, perfect balance in my opinion. These songs are neat in my opinion: ''Those Good Old Dreams'', ''Strength Of A Woman'', ''(Want You) Back In My Life Again'', ''I Belive You'', ''Touch Me When We're Dancing'' and ''Beechwood 4-5789''.
1. Those Good Old Dreams - 5/5
2. Strength Of A Woman - 4/5
3. (Want You) Back In My Life Again - 5/5
4. When You've Got What It Takes - 4/5
5. Somebody's Been Lyin' - 3/5
6. I Believe You - 4/5
7. Touch Me When We're Dancing - 5/5
8. When It's Gone (It's Just Gone) - 3/5
9. Beechwood 4-5789 - 5/5
10. Because We Are In Love (The Wedding Song) - 3/5

7. A Kind Of Hush

A Kind Of Hush Album 1976
It was hard for me to choose between ''Made In America'' and ''A Kind Of Hush'', but i gotta go with ''A Kind Of Hush'', for place 7.. ''Goofus'' has a similar problem like''Man Smart Woman Smarter'', ''Goofus'' sounds empty, and out of rhythm, but i prefer Goofus. ''I Can't Smile Without You'' is a beautiful song, i really like the Melody in this songs, that's my most favorite songs from this Album. Overall, this Album is really calm for me.
These are the songs i think are great, from this Album: ''There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over The World)'', ''Can't Smile Without You'', ''I Need To Be In Love'', ''I Have You'' and ''Breaking Up is Hard To Do''.
1. There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over The World) - 5/5
2. You - 4/5
3. Sandy - 4/5
4. Goofus - 1/5
5. Can't Smile Without You - 5/5
6. I Need To Be In Love - 5/5
7. One More Time - 2/5
8. Boat To Sail - 3/5
9. I Have You - 4/5
10. Breaking Up Is Hard To Do - 5/5

6. Horizon

Horizon Album 1975
This is a Good Album, it sounds very relaxing, happy, sad and dramatic. I like all songs from this Album, my most favorite ones are: ''Only Yesterday'', ''Solitare'', ''(I'm Caught Between) Goodbye And I Love You'' and ''Love Me For What I Am''.
1. Aurora - 4/5
2. Only Yesterday - 5/5
3. Desperado - 4/5
4. Please Mr. Postman - 5/5
5. I Can Dream, Can't I? - 4/5
6. Solitare - 5/5
7. Happy - 4/5
8. (I'm Caught Between) Goodbye And I Love You - 5/5
9. Love Me For What I Am - 5/5
10. Eventide - 4/5

5. Now & Then

Now & Then Album 1973
This is a great Album, i really like the Radio/Oldies part on the B-Side, it's like you're actually listening to the Radio, like Richard and Karen when they were young! ''Heather'' the instrumental/piano song is a masterpiece in my opinion, i love how the song is calm, then it turns slowly dramatic, and then it turns calm again.
These are my favorite tunes: ''Yesterday Once More'', ''This Masquerade'', ''Heather'', ''Johnny Angel'', ''One Fine Day'', ''The Night Has A Thousand Eyes'' and ''The End Of The World''.
1. Sing 2/5
2. This Masquerade 5/5
3. Heather 5/5
4. Jambalaya (On The Bayou) 4/5
5. I Can't Make Music 3/5
6. Yesterday Once More 5/5
7. Fun, Fun, Fun 4/5
8. The End Of The World 5/5
9. Da Doo Ron Ron 4/5
10. Dead Man's Curve 2/5
11. Johnny Angel 5/5
12. The Night Has A Thousand Eyes 5/5
13. Our Day Will Come - 2/5
14. One Fine Day - 4/5
15. Yesterday Once More - Reprise - 5/5

4. A Song For You

A Song For You Album 1972
The most liked Carpenters Album, it really is great! I absolutely love the electro-guitar in ''Goodbye To Love'', i also love the piano in ''Piano Picker'' and ''I Won't Last A Day Without You''
My favorite songs from the Album: ''Top Of The World'', ''Hurting Each Other'', ''Piano Picker'', ''Goodbye To Love'' and ''I Won't Last A Day Without You''
1. A Song For You - 5/5
2. Top Of The World - 5/5
3. Hurting Each Other - 5/5
4. It's Going To Take Some Time - 4/5
5. Goodbye To Love - 5/5
6. Intermission - 5/5
7. Bless The Beast And Children - 3/5
8. Flat Baroque - 4/5
9. Piano Picker 5/5
10. I Won't Last A Day Without You 5/5
11. Crystal Lullaby 2/5
12. Road Ode 4/5
13. A Song For You - Reprise 5/5

3. Offering/Ticket To Ride

Offering/Ticket To Ride Album 1969
The Carpenters first Album, since the first Album they made good Albums. I really like this one, it has the Carpenters sound we like and love! What also makes this Album good is that every song was written by Richard and John (except ''Get Together'', ''Ticket To Ride'' and ''Nowaday's Clancy Can't Even Sing'') The piano and instruments in ''Someday'' are something out of this place, everytime i listen to this song my ''eyes open''. ''Nowaday's Clancy Can't Even Sing'' in my opinion, is a masterpiece, i really love the vocals, melody and the background melody
My top 3 songs are (in no order): ''Your Wonderful Parade'', ''Someday'' and ''Nowaday's Clancy Can't Even Sing''
1. Inovaction - 2/5
2. Your Wonderful Parade - 5/5
3. Someday - 5/5
4. Get Together - 4/5
5. All Of My Life 4/5
6. Turn Away 5/5
7. Ticket To Ride 5/5
8. Don't Be Afraid 5/5
9. What's The Use 3/5
10. All I Can Do 2/5
11. Eve 4/5
12. Nowaday's Clancy Can't Even Sing 5/5
13. Benediction 5/5

2. Carpenters

Carpenters Album 1971
It was hard to choose this Album or Close To You as 1., i like both Albums really much. The Carpenters Album has no bad songs, i like every song very much. ''One Love'' and ''For All We Know'' are two wonderful songs! They remind me of classical music.
My top 3 songs from this Album (in no order): ''Sometimes'', ''One Love'' and ''Let Me Be The One'' (''For All We Know'' is also good, but i can't decide between this song or ''One Love'' both are beautiful!)
1. Rainy Days And Mondays - 5/5
2. Saturday - 4/5
3. Let Me Be The One - 5/5
4. (A Place To) Hide Away - 4/5
5. For All We Know - 5/5

8. One Love - 5/5
9. Barach/David Medley - 3/5
10. Sometimes - 5/5

1. Close To You

Close To You Album 1970
Close To You, the very first Carpenters Album i listened to. This Album is my most favorite one from my Vinyl collection overall. It sounds really magically and amazing! (i like Close To You, as much as the Carpenters Album) ''Crescent Noon'' is different from all songs i ever listened to, it stands out for me (in a good way!)
My top 3 songs are (in no order): ''I'll Never Fall In Love Again'', ''I Kept On Loving You'' and ''(They Long To Be) Close To You''
1. We've Only Just Begun - 5/5
2. Love Is Surrender - 5/5
3. Maybe It's You - 4/5
4. Reasons To Believe - 5/5
5. Help - 5/5
6. (They Long To Be) Close To You - 5/5
7. Baby It's You - 5/5
8. I'll Never Fall In Love Again - 5/5
9. Crescent Noon - 4/5
10. Mr. Guder - 5/5
11. I Kept On Loving You - 5/5
12. Another Song - 3/5
Thank you for reading my Ranking of the Albums!

2024.05.04 20:20 Acharyanaira Space builders and space strategies — which are your favorites?

In the middle of this my mortal life I found me… playing “space” strategies again. :) Excuse the misquoting of Dante, I couldn’t help it as an English schoolteacher. But yeah, after what feels like a lifetime, something has kindled that love for strategies and especially strategies set in space. It’s one of those genres I fondly remember playing as a teen with my bro — Starcraft and Sins of a Solar Empire being the top ones. And I also remember being very bad at them, especially Starcraft played competitively, ergo you’ll not see it in the list >:(
But something gave me that urge to go into black starry vacuum recently. Maybe the ol’ regular work stress and need for escapism (and what’s farther away than space? hahaha), but in the last two weeks I fell a lil’ bit in love with this subgenre again. Replayed some oldies in small chunks for the nostalgia flashes but also tried out a couple of new ones. Some of them really, really good for me in my current mental state. I’ll only list a couple here (disclaimer: they’re more of… my “current” favorites, not necessarily all-time best games ever made)

2024.05.04 11:56 turbobureaucrat A curious list about the eternal

Post on solist.blog
One of the first posts in this blog was the “Books about lists” post, and among mentioned there was “The Book of Lists” [1]. Let's look at one funny list published back in 1977 in it. This list is called “15 prehistoric things alive today.” Have all the members of this list survived during the past 50 years?
So, the list:
  1. Coelacanth, a fish that existed as early as 400 million years ago.
  2. Australian lungfish, fish again, 200 million years with us.
  3. Lingula), a marine animal, looks like shell, has been here for 500 million years.
  4. Ginkgo, a plant, appeared here with dinosaurs.
  5. Peripatus, a worm that is on Earth for half a billion years.
  6. Horseshoe crab, the ancient brothers of arachnids, 300 million years old.
  7. Dawn redwood, a relatively young tree, only 100 million years old.
  8. Tuatara, reptile, 200 million years old.
  9. Okapi, a relative of the giraffe, is about 30 million years old.
  10. Welwitschia, a plant from Namibia, has been here for millions of years, and one plant can live for 2,000 years.
  11. Bristlecone pine, young by the standards of this list, but existed on Earth already 8000 years ago. They are famed for the fact that the oldest-known living individual of the earth is the bristlecone pine, 4,800 years old.
  12. Stephens island frog, great…great-grandmother of modern frogs, 275 million years old.
  13. Crocodile, 195 million years old.
  14. Duckbill platypus, fashionable and youthful, turns out to be the oldie, 150 million years old.
  15. Turtle, 275 million years old.
Who, who is still with us?
There is no correct answer to this question because the question is wrong. The correct answer to another question is — we are still with them! 🥳
In the book “Antifragile” I once read about the Lindy effect: “The old is expected to stay longer than the young in proportion to their age” [2]. That is, these species will outlive everyone else.

2024.04.30 04:37 SlipNo3048 Show Thoughts: Real Estate with Marina Allen, Friday, April 19th, 2024

The Show:
I saw Real Estate on Friday, April 19th, at the District Music Hall in Norwalk, CT. They were as advertised, sounded just like Real Estate. What I mean by that is Real Estate has one of the most distinct, recognizable, and most consistent sounds of any band I know, and it rings true in live performance, to their credit. Play the first 10 seconds of any Real Estate song, and any fan can probably recognize their sound happily. That being said, it makes for a bit of a sleepy show, because while their instrumentals are usually at an energetic pace and fun to listen to, they’re also very soft. And so is the lead singer’s voice. But if you’re a fan of their music, you shouldn’t go into a Real Estate show thinking their sound is going to be a blow to the face.
The Band:
The band seemed to be at a tired point in their tour. Before jumping into their first song, the bassist Alex Bleeker said to the crowd, “I said in the green room, ‘This is gonna be the best show on tour. So let’s give it a whirl.’” As the show went on, I began to be pretty certain that that comment was sarcastic. I say this because they were shorthanded, their keyboardist, Matt Kallman, was missing because his wife had just had a baby, they informed the crowd at one point. And the keyboard is a huge part of some of Real Estate’s best songs. They also had several, what looked to be, sound issues, in between songs. The lead singer was adjusting things a lot and it didn’t look natural, they even had to jam for about two minutes in between a song as he was fiddling with a wire with the venue’s tech. I know it was the venue’s tech because the lead singer, after fixing a problem with one of his pedals (it looked like), exclaimed “This is what happens when you can’t afford a tech.” Also, they were their own sound guys. They came out on stage before the show and tested all of their instruments and all microphones. If you were a casual fan and didn’t know what the band members looked like, it would’ve been hard to tell if those were the band members or not, considering that they all look like they should be solving problems on my laptop. They could easily pass on sound guys for the band. Not a knock on the guys, I feel like they fully embrace the “nerdy band” shtick, the lead singer being kind of a Rivers Cuomo-type, and they are significantly cooler than me just based on their musical skills alone. So just an honest observation that I found to be humorous, but also a little sad because I believe that a band as good as Real Estate should be able to afford some freakin’ sound guys.
Anyways, my point is that it seemed like the “Best show on tour” comment was a sarcastic way of motivating themselves to sort of “accept the suck,” on what was going to be a difficult, “throw away” type of show for them, given the factors I just listed. Bleeker kept making funny comments about Norwalk and how “crazy” of a time they’re having in the city, which was a crowd pleaser because he was obviously being sarcastic and playing into the self-deprecating humor that many people from Connecticut have about Connecticut. He wasn’t being rude, just wasn’t holding back on the fact that they probably knew performing in Norwalk, CT wouldn’t be the most riveting scene in their live performing careers. He stuck a “putting clams on pizza” joke in there. Credit to him for playing to the audience, people in Connecitcut fucking love when you talk about their pizza.
Even before the last song of the night, the lead singer, adjusting his pedal nervously again said “Okay we’re done… after this,” and broke in to “Talking Backwards” to close out the night. They remained totally professional the whole time, they weren’t expressing any displeasure. They just seemed like they wanted to get through the set, and move on to the next show. Accepting that the odds were a bit stacked against them for the night.
The Music:
They were rock solid as a band overall, totally in sync and like I said: they sounded like Real Estate. Not much of a difference between their studio and live sound. Julian Lynch riffs were sharp, bouncy, but soft. I wished he played a little tonier live, which might be an unpopular opinion because that’s just not their sound. But to that I would say Lynch’s guitar riffs are really the focal point and most attractive part of Real Estate’s best songs, so if they’re not bright and vibrant and the leading sound live, then I think that’s makes their live performances less powerful. Also, I was on the opposite side of where Lynch was standing on the stage, but it was a small room, so take that as you will. I just wanted to hear 'em more. He wears his guitar very high, playing the instrument like he’s working at a standup desk, hardly moving throughout the show. Making it look awfully easy to play Real Estate’s very active songs that require a lot of movement up and down the fretboard.
It was a strong setlist, coming from someone who has only listened to the band sporadically over the years, but can recognize a few songs more than just their hits (Had to Hear, Talking Backwards, Beach Comber, etc., which they played). I know some deeper cuts like Fake Blues, Kinder Blumen, Green Aisles, etc. Their new songs didn’t sound like a dramatic change from their known sound, but were certainly not a carbon copy. They played eight from the new album (Flowers, Haunted World, Somebody New, Say No More, Interior, Paper Cup, Freeze Brain, Water Underground). They brought “Had to Hear” out early (third song). I’m always interested to see when a band plays one of their biggest oldest hits, whether they save it for the end or play it early to throw an oldie in with some of their early-set new stuff just to keep the casual fans intrigued and at a balance of interest with the die hard fans.
The venue:
The District Music Hall is small and it was close to full for this show, but there was space. There’s a GA area that I would guess fits 200-300 people, and a balcony that fits probably 100 or so. Maybe less. Was pretty quick and easy to get a drink at the bar that’s straight back, centered with the stage. Sound was not fantastic in there, and I’m not some guy who knows what he’s talking about when it comes to proper sound quality in a venue, it just got a little vibrate-ey at times and I just think I’ve heard better at similarly-sized venues like College Street Music Hall in New Haven. It could’ve just been the band's sound and my sub five star review of the District Music Hall’s sound may be inaccurate, but who knows. It was not a dealbreaking problem, however, just a small critique. I would happily go see a show there again.
The Opener:
I got there for the back end of Marina Allen’s set, I think I heard four songs. I couldn’t tell you what they were, but I was pleasantly surprised by this artist who I had never heard of before. And I love a good opener. She definitely has some Stevie Nicks influence to her voice and overall songwriting, if I had to guess. In other words, her voice is lovely and quite soothing. Again, much like Real Estate, this made for a sleepy performance, but I would fall asleep to Marina Allen any time and enjoy it. Light electric guitar, keyboard, drums, and bass. I respected that she played a really slow and quiet song as her last, dismissing her drummer and keyboardist offstage to play with just her bassist, who added just a touch of plucking to the song. Can’t find it on Setlist FM, so anybody who was there/is a fan of her, let me know or take a guess at what it was.
The band looked exhausted. Like they’d hardly slept in days. They mention it was near the end of their run with Real Estate (looks like it ended on the next day on April 20th in Woodstock, NY), so it had probably been a long haul. I gave her a listen on Spotify after and liked “Original Goodness.” Also found “Falls on me,” as it’s her most popular song, but I believe it’s not technically hers. Says it’s by Sylvie and she’s featured, but Christ does she sound good on it.
Share if you were there and/or if you’ve seen Real Estate or Marina Allen anywhere else, would love to hear any other experiences and opinions.

2024.04.30 00:43 Ur_Companys_IT_Guy Analysis: The secret reasons of how the cats stay at the top

Hi boys, love the pod.
I'm a cats nuffie who knows the club inside and out. Here are some of the reasons the club are able to stay on top in ways the media don't really pick up on. But cats insiders, ex players etc, have breadcrumbed throughout the media
Player payments: Chris Scott has said he believes the biggest area of competitive advantage in the AFL is your TPP (total player payments) management.
Steve Johnson has said on the triple M Sunday Rub that at the cats the players have very clear visibility on what all the other players are on. There's two main aspects of how their player salaries work:
Salary bands
Cats are very clear that the best 5 players get bespoke contracts
Next best players 6-10 will get X per year (everyone knows what this amount is)
11-15 get y per year
And so on. The player salary bands get shown to the players every year as part of pre season.
So players have clear expectations set early in their career, and are really content with their salaries.
Example: This is how you end up with max Holmes rejecting offers for $1m+ a season from other clubs to sign with the cats on $650-750k a year.
However, after the age of 30 (well it was 30 when Steve J was playing, could have gone up) you get a set amount based on your age. Which is how you have such a stacked looking older list, for the last 3-4 years Tom Hawkins would have been on $200-300k + match fee instead of the ~$600k he'd get at other clubs. And how the cats keep so many oldies on the books.
This is how the cats can keep recruiting well each off season too. They always have the salary space because as their players age more salary space is created. Chris Scott famously said Joel Selwood was taking about 1/3rd of the salary he'd get elsewhere.
Player development: Every year the cats seem to have some young player come out of obscurity to suddenly be at AFL standard and in their best 22. This year Ollie Dempsey is the obvious example. Other recent examples are Sam De Knoning, Brad Close, Gryan Meyers.
But the truth is the cats just develop their players differently to other clubs. The cats never have access to high draft picks.
Most of these players are getting picked up at picks 25-45, we then really front load the development and make them spend 2-3 years in the VFL. We're basically an academy with a football team, not the other way around.
Then only when they're ready do they get games in the AFL (where possible we do give them 1-2 games early on to blood them). We never just draft them and play them. To quote Chris Scott "it's an overnight success that we put 2 years of hard work in to make"
Plus the obvious genius that is Steven Wells picking players out of obscurity such as Tom Stuart (local footy), Mark Blitzavs (Cat B rookie), Brad Close (didn't play in TAC cup, was drafted straight out of local footy).
The truth of the 2023 season + player development:
The obscure stat that best articulates what happened to the cats in 2023: if every game in the H&A season that was decided by less than 2 goals went the other way, the cats would have finished 2 games clear on top of the ladder. They always won by a lot and never lost by much.
And I don't think many casual fans realize how injury striken the cats were last year, there was a middle part of the year where 10 of the 2022 premiership players were unavailable due to injury.
But what this has meant is the 2nd rung of players such as Tanner Bruhen, Parfit, O'Conner had about half a season where they all had to try to carry the team. So that now we're getting our full list back our bottom 6 have really improved compared to 12 months ago.
Oh and we literally have the Lionel Messi of AFL 🇦🇷

2024.04.29 21:42 av3 San Antonio's Week In Movies [2024-04-29 to 2024-05-06]

May the Fourth be with us all as we head into a combination Cinco de Mayo/Star Wars weekend. Santikos Casa Blanca will be screening the entire Star Wars saga on Saturday, May 4th, beginning at six in the morning. They list it as 22h 22m, however all movies back to back would be 20h 41m, so they're assumedly putting a 10~15 minute break in between each movie. Tickets are $100 and include a large popcorn and unlimited drink refills. The theater so far is roughly 2/3 sold out.
There is a UTSA Directors Workshop student film screening at Santikos Palladium this Wednesday, at 6 PM. The main focus is on the release of The Compass. Other films from UTSA, Northwest Vista College, East Central High School, and Communication Arts High School will also be shown. It's free and no RSVP is necessary, however I've heard it fills up and my friends I don't want to stop any of the family members from being able to attend. Our plan is to show up and wait until it's showtime before claiming our seats. If it fills up we'll attend the 7 PM Spider-Man 3, Spirited Away, or Alien screenings.
Our last spotlight is on Mars Express, a French animated sci-fi film from Director Jérémie Périn. Initial critic impressions are very positive, and we're luck to have Regal screening it throughout the city for the next week or two!

TJ Maxx haul to refresh my life
Life has kinda sucked lately and I've been fixated on perfumes, especially on Reddit. But I'm on a budget so I made a mental list of what I'm really looking for and tried to take brand identity (and Instagram ads) out of the equation. This retail therapy moment has already paid off, I am 1000% more excited for life than I was this morning.
  1. Elizabeth Arden Sunflowers Eau de Toilette - majorly influenced by Reddits affinity for EA. I wanted a light fruity floral so this is a perfect match for me but I wouldn't have known to look for it without Reddit so thank you!
  2. Calvin Klein Escape Eau de Parfum - lol I know this is an oldie but I had nostalgic comfort reasons to be on the look out for this perfume and they happened to have exactly one bottle in the case. This scent is etched into my brain so I know I'm going to wear it often. I smell the sweet melon note right on top, supported by a mix of florals.
  3. Sand + Fog Discovery Set - The Vanilla Musk is going to go straight into my on-the-go pouch. The Jasmine Cedarwood is lovely and addictive. And now I finally know what you all mean by "that BR540 DNA" because yuppp everyone I know wears Burberry Her or Ariana Grande Cloud and this smells like the last 5+ years to me. This was only $10! I think I'll be buying more Sand + Fog sets in the future

2024.04.28 16:15 Regnisyak1 The Amazing Race 19 - A Review!

Hi everyone! In my effort to procrastinate from my senior year of college (TWO WEEKS LEFT!), I managed to watch TAR 19 for the entire day yesterday! But, here is my previous review from TAR 18.
And, POLLS <3. Here is TAR 19, the masterlist with the links to the polls, and the leaderboard. I still love seeing your takes go through and excited to keep dating!
TAR 19 was a very solid season! I wouldn't call it great per se, definitely not the same highs as the earlier TAR, but it was a serviceable season, with some strong stories (Ernie and Cindy, the twins, the siblings, etc), and also some likable teams that made the season much lighter (like Amani and Marcus), which created a very solid cast, and a general good time toward the season that made me happier watching. The show seems to be in its stride, at least slightly at this point, and it has been creating some fun moments. I think the ultimate issue with TAR 19 was that I don't think much of it was memorable, but I know I enjoyed what I watched, so even though I can't remember specific roadblocks or challenges or locations, the characters carried enough to create an aura of fun.
Speaking of routes and legs, I think TAR 19 was all alright, but there were definite negativities with the route this season. Malawi was interesting just because it was a new country and led to inherent conflict with the people. But otherwise, I think it was lackluster on all other cylinders, lol. There were a lot of short-term memory tasks and too many bicycles, and I felt like every clue was some sort of riddle. Also, the product placement seemed especially heinous this season. I haven't talked about it that much, but it felt like almost every episode was just a long advertisement for Ford Vehicles. I get it, it's not a stretch because you need cars to travel, but it was like every five seconds! Not as bad as the Snapple ad last season, but still.
It also felt like this season had some peculiar twists that made the first few episodes of the season more questionable than anything else. The double elimination sucked for obvious reasons, mainly because we lost Ethan and Jenna for it (hi, I am a big Survivor fan!) and it was just not a good idea overall. The hazard was fine but took time away from the show was kind of lackluster overall, and was a glorified speed bump that didn't really have any reason to exist (please TAR, get rid of the opening tasks!). Also that little stipulation in the orphanage task was just silly and goofy, if you ask me, and really screwed over the last two teams. That kind of tanked at the beginning, but the season picked up speed after and was pretty good after that.
Anyway, those are my main criticisms of TAR 19, but the cast itself was pretty solid besides some duds. Let's get talking about it, shall we?
  1. Laurence and Zac (1/10) - someone in my group I was live chatting with mentioned that they were the "evil Michael and Kevin Wu" and yeah, I think that sums them up very well. It was pretty obvious that Zac did not want to be there at all and Laurence was just constantly criticizing his son. It seemed very stressful, and on top of that, Laurence was vaguely sexist during that challenge in Malawi. Overall they were not very relevant to the season, and I groaned more often than not when they were on screen.
  2. Andy and Tommy (1/10) - So many personal red flags with Andy and Tommy. First, I didn't care for their comments at the Buddhist temple. If y'all know Leslie Nease from Survivor, I'd like to compare them here because they were both quite critical of the Buddhist Temple they had to go to in both series. With Leslie, she was not necessarily judging their religion, but it seemed more that she was deeply uncomfortable, and felt she had to remove herself from the situation. With Andy and Tommy, it seemed like they were really judgmental, and them mentioning that there was only one God, and it was there really put a poor taste in my mouth. Especially with the juxtaposition of the other team (I think Joseph and Jennifer), who stated that it wasn't their religion, but they still had to be respectful. Also, the whole Mercedes thing with Andy whining he couldn't do a detour, and then saying Jesus forgave him after acting like an ass all day, and then STILL winning the Mercedes made me roll my eyes. Even besides that, they had some other moments that I was more negative on. The main one I can think of is them dominating the race. I, in general, am lower on characters in TV that destroy challenges because I think it can just get stagnant over a while. Andy and Tommy accidentally got half of their wins anyway, so they weren't that good. Like on another season with people who could read clues, they wouldn't be that good. Also, I don't really think their downfall was that good. Not necessarily because thematically it isn't - their luck runs out, and then their cab driver beefs with other people, but moreso because the race was bowing down to them at all moments. Phil said they were the best racers ever on the mat, and the heroic music took away from their sweet downfall. Tommy and Andy definitely should have been more villainous this season, and I think this is one of the few times where TAR tells a story that doesn't really make sense in the context of the story. There's nothing I hate more when a character who should be a villain, gets portrayed as a hero, and Andy and Tommy exemplify that to a T.
  3. Ron and Bill (2/10) - I cannot list a single detail about these two besides being twist fucked.
  4. Ethan and Jenna (4/10) - I love Ethan. Watching him come back to Winners at War on Survivor was a deep relief because we knew about his cancer, but we didn't know how he was doing. But I think this version on TAR made me respect him more on WaW, but unfortunately, he still got screwed on this version with the stupid double elimination, and that was just beyond sucky. Jenna was also great, we got some "Jenna being sarcastic" moments. It was also good to see her back after the way she left Survivor: All-Stars. But yeah fuck the Double Elimination.
  5. Kaylani and Lisa (4/10) - The only scene I really remember from them was the whole passport debacle, which just seemed awkwardly edited on the series. Granted, I don't think there is any way where you can coherently edit that on the show due to how lucky and random it was (also cast the dude who found the passport on race, please). But yeah, it was a mess, and this team in general was a mess, which wasn't bad, but they felt overshadowed.
  6. Jeremy and Sandy (6/10) - Jeremy and Sandy weren't good per se, but I found them to be generally likable, and we at least understood their story of learning how to communicate with each other was the main reason being on the race. They struggled throughout, and while I would certainly not call them the most interesting couple, they weren't terrible.
  7. Justin and Jennifer (7/10) - I really liked sibling teams on the race, and I felt that these two delivered because they were really funny and argued constantly, trying to find a communication style with each other, without feeling overtly toxic like other relationships on the show. The whole bicycle debacle was also really funny and I felt bad for Jennifer in that moment. They weren't great by any means, but I just found them to be really solid in general.
  8. Liz and Marie (7/10) - I ranked them this high just because of how happy they were to clean elephant poop during their speed bump. These two had a messy time, whether it was failing to repeat a Confucius proverb, running out of money and almost having to walk 5 hours to the Koi Fish pond, or in general just getting so far behind that there was no hope to get back up front. Plus, the context of them racing for their dead father was a nice character moment for both of them and overall, I just really enjoyed their time on the race!
  9. Bill and Cathi (8/10) - We love the oldies, right? These two were so clearly madly in love which was cute, and they never argued on the race, even when they got u-turned or had some frustrating legs. They proved themselves as being fit and athletic constantly and proved themselves against the initial perceptions of them early in the race. I do wish we got more fallout with the U-Turn thing with Cindy and Ernie (which spoiler, is my only criticism of Ernie and Cindy), but overall they were a pleasant team and added some levity to the season!
  10. Amani and Marcus (8/10) - I like these two for similar reasons as Bill and Cathi, being that they were an incredibly likable team, who used their weaknesses to their strengths. For Marcus, he was worried that he would be caught as a football player, but he used that "weakness" (I put that in quotes because it really wasn't one LOL), and then used his coaching abilities to get through the race. My favorite moment of that was the silly rabbit challenge where he was hyping his money up and getting into the moment. Also, them constantly fighting back to get in, only to lose to the flight simulator was really sad especially with them in Atlanta. Overall, a really fun team.
  11. Ernie and Cindy (9/10) - Ernie and Cindy had a strong interpersonal story of Cindy trying to prove herself to her parents by showing that she did pick a man that she really loved, which I found to be really sweet. They were able to balance each other out on the race well, with Cindy being a self-described control freak and Ernie being the B-Student. Their abilities combined in a way where they were able to win the race and a million dollars. I do find Cindy's slow breakdown of not being able to get first place to be interesting, but I did wish she got a little bit of karma for U-Turning Bill and Cathi, but that story was mainly dropped. But, they beat Andy and Tommy which was neat! I also found her comments in Malawi to be questionable, but I learned that they gave their money to start a donation fund for kids and needs after going, so I warmed up on them since.
Season Ranking: 7/10 - A good season overall with a strong cast and likable people, but having issues with some cast members, an overarching story lacking some content, and the tasks being repetitive after a while did cause me to lower it.
Onto TAR 20, and three episodes in, I can confidently say I hate Art & JJ and Rachel & Dave, but I will ALWAYS stan Brenchel.
Season Ranking
  1. TAR 14 (10/10)
  2. TAR 5 (10/10)
  3. TAR 2 (10/10)
  4. TAR 3 (10/10)
  5. TAR 1 (9/10)
  6. TAR 11 (9/10)
  7. TAR 10 (8/10)
  8. TAR 7 (8/10)
  9. TAR 12 (8/10)
  10. TAR 19 (7/10)
  11. TAR 17 (7/10)
  12. TAR 18 (6/10)
  13. TAR 13 (5/10)
  14. TAR 16 (3/10)
  15. TAR 15 (2/10)
  16. TAR 4 (2/10)
  17. TAR 9 (1/10)

  19. TAR 6 (0/10)

2024.04.27 22:11 GamerGirlLex77 READ BEFORE YOU POST: RULES & INFO TO BE AWARE OF

Here are the rules for everyone and hopefully this will be easier to access for our mobile users who don't know how to locate them. We end up taking down a lot of posts and comments for not following rules. None of us likes having to do that so please take the time to read this. If any other mods want to unlock this post to add to it, please do because I'm sure I'll miss things! I'll include some other relevant information below the rules. So here we go:

  1. Keep it Civil: don't be rude to others who comment here. Name calling and insults directed at each other will be removed. We can respectfully disagree without the insults.
  2. Check to See if Your Post Has Already Been Posted: this one happens a lot. You can do a quick search and check. If something you're looking to post has had a significant amount of time pass between the last time it was posted, please use the "Oldie but Goodie" tag.
  3. No Brigading: For crossposts - do not comment on the original sub and here. That can endanger existence of this sub because of Reddit's brigading rules. This a permanent ban if we catch you doing it and we will contact the mods on the other subreddit.
  4. Do Not Clone/Crosspost from BORU Without Adding Updates Not Already Posted There: our sub creator is also a mod on BORU and wanted this sub to be something different. If you have an update from a post on BORU that is not already there then feel free to crosspost but please include that update in the text of your post.
  5. No Link Only Posts: spare us from having to click links to articles. Copy and paste the text from the article on your post and include the link to it. Crossposts from other subs not just linking to an article may not apply here since the automod catches the text. For those of you unsure how to access the automod content, it's stickied right under the post. If you forget to copy/paste the text, please reach out and request to have it copy/pasted and stickied by a mod. (I personally do not mind doing this but other mods may not wish to do so and just ask you to repost it).
  6. There Has to be Consequences Beyond Dropping Your Iphone: we like a good tale of comeuppance here. The consequences must have already happened and are not just being predicted.
  7. The Consequences Must be Obvious AND Include a Surprised Reaction: this one is the rule that gets broken the most on posting. Not only must the consequences have been predictable but the person/people involved MUST be expressing some kind of surprise or distress at the consequences happening to them. Without both elements, your post will be taken down.
  8. No ageism, racism, abelism, sexism, homophobia or transphobia: this rule break can and will result in a permanent ban which is up to the mod. Use of slurs is an automatic permanent ban. This is not the sub to post or comment with hateful opinions about marginalized groups. Throwing more hate at mods in modmail will just get you muted. If you think a comment of yours was misunderstood, reach out through modmail to clarify and you may be able to edit it for reapproval with a mod's permission
  9. No Porn Stories: a lot of this ends up being spam but we don't need sexually explicit stories or photos here. No one wants to hear your sexually explicit comments about people involved in the posts or suggestions that someone become a sex worker. Sexual content, comments or suggestions about minors is an automatic permanent ban with no appeal. If your post has some sexual content that doesn't violate this rule but may not be safe to see at work, please use the NSFW function. A mod might mark your post NSFW if you forget to do this.
  10. Do Not Advocate for, Support, Suggest or Threaten Bodily Harm, Self-Harm, Harassment, Violence or Death: this one should be pretty self-explanatory but do not make comments supporting violence, harassment or self-harm directed anyone. If it's said sarcastically, please use "/s". We also don't want to hear about hypothetical violence you'd inflict on someone if you were involved in the content. Sensitive info that can lead to doxxing of a non-public figure will be removed, too.
  11. No Deaths, Violence, Violent Threats, Animal Abuse or Child Abuse: content with physical fights, death, injury due to physical violence, child abuse or animal abuse will be taken down. There are plenty of subs that welcome fight videos, please use them.
  12. No Armchair Diagnosing: it's impossible to diagnose based on the small snippets of people's lives we see in posts. If you are not an appropriate professional who can diagnose/assess for the condition or do not have lived experience with the diagnosis, please leave the armchair diagnosis out of your comments. Two of the mods are mental health professionals so don't even try it. If you do have appropriate experience to make the observation, include that in your comment.
  13. No Deliberately Inflammatory Posts/Comments or Controversial Subjects: this one also gets violated a lot and gets a ton of pushback. We know it may not be a popular rule but when we've allowed posts on political topics, politically adjacent topics or certain world events, it always devolves into fights, insults and inflammatory comments within a matter of hours where we end up having to remove a ton of comments, lock the post and ban people. Plenty of subs welcome discussion on these topics so use them. Deliberately inflammatory comments meant to start fights will also be removed.
  14. Too Many Rule Violations Will Get You Banned: if you aren't aware, Reddit gives us a list of comments and posts taken down for each user on this sub. If we've had to warn you or remove things too many times, it can result in a ban for a period of days or permanently. It's up to the mods. If you wish to appeal a ban, please do so civilly and we may be able to come to a compromise or remove the ban entirely. I promise, we're reasonable people. Appeals will be denied if the violation was particularly egregious. Our rules are simple so please follow them.
  15. If You Believe Something Was Taken Down in Error, Are Unsure Why Something Was Removed or Have a Complaint, Contact Us Through ModMail: we all make mistakes and sometimes content gets removed on accident. I know I've done it. Speaking civilly to us will get a civil response and an apology if the error was on us. We may be able to reapprove comments or posts if that happens. Complaints need to be made through ModMail and not on a post or in a comment. It will be removed if done that way. Insulting us will not go well for you. Reporting mod removals as spam or harassment also will not end well. None of us are trying to spam or harass you. If you got multiple comments removed, it was for a reason. We are happy have civil discussions about rules or concerns any of you may have. Suggestions for the sub are also welcome!
Those are the rules as of now. Some additional things to know:
  1. Minimum Karma: if you don't see your comment you may not have the minimum karma needed. We have a bot removing those comments. If a mod has time, we may approve comments without the minimum karma that are meaningfully contributing to the topic.
  2. Locked Post: If you're unable to respond to someone or comment, it may be because we locked the post. If the comments are going downhill and quite a few people are breaking rules the post may be locked.
  3. This Isn’t An Advice Sub: please do not make posts about consequences you’re asking for advice about.
  4. Fake Posts: if you have evidence that a post is fake, please let a mod know so we can take it down. If you think a post is fake, please don’t be rude in the comments about it. There is no need for insults directed at the OP or anyone else for believing the story.
That's all I can think of for now. We may edit this post over time. Thank you all for contributing and making this sub what it is. We all appreciate you and your help reporting rule violations, too. Happy posting everyone!
TLDR: don't break the rules and act shocked when you get consequences. Don’t become the content here!

2024.04.27 01:23 TragicKingdom1 A Rater Double Header - Rate Olympics Closing Ceremony and Payola Slot Vote

Greetings raters! The next month is going to be crazy eventful for rates so I thought I would combine both of these posts of interest into one to save a pin slot and hopefully get more votes for both.
The inaugural Popheads Rate Olympics has been a rousing success thus far, with our Opening Ceremony vote and the ten days of games in our Discord server having concluded yesterday. All in all, thirty songs have already earned their way in; the tl;dr of what we have to accomplish today is to round out our rate with a final ten songs.
In case you missed it in our Discord server, the songs currently in the rate are:
  1. April - Oh! My Mistake
  2. Blackstreet - No Diggity
  3. Brandy - When You Touch Me
  4. Britney Spears - Womanizer (voted in)
  5. Carly Rae Jepsen - Fever
  6. Charli XCX - Claws (voted in)
  7. Charly Bliss - Percolator
  8. City Girls - Act Up
  9. Death Grips - I've Seen Footage (voted in)
  10. Fall Out Boy - Rat a Tat
  11. George Michael - Freedom! '90
  12. Girls' Generation - I Got a Boy
  13. Goo Goo Dolls - Iris (voted in)
  14. Jamie xx - Loud Places (voted in)
  15. Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity
  16. Jay Sean - Down (voted in)
  17. Joli Tsai - Honey Trap
  18. Kendrick Lamar - Money Trees
  19. Kid Cudi - Pursuit of Happiness
  20. Lady Gaga - Judas (voted in)
  21. Lilo & Stitch - Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride
  22. Mariah Carey - Fantasy Remix
  23. Marina - How to be a Heartbreaker
  24. Mitski - Washing Machine Heart (voted in)
  25. Owl City - Fireflies (voted in)
  26. Porter Robinson & Madeon - Shelter (voted in)
  27. Post Malone - Rockstar
  28. Taylor Swift - Begin Again
  29. The Beatles - Penny Lane
  30. The Weeknd - Secrets
The ones I marked as (voted in) are important, because those artists cannot have duplicate songs voted in; however, there can be duplicates from artists that only have songs in from game winners. Thankfully, TiltControls has updated the eligibility list for us. Otherwise, the rules of this vote are the same as last time; you can vote for ten songs, and the ten songs with the most votes will earn their spot in the rate. However, there is one added twist to help you all vote strategically: below is the list of songs that came closest to getting into the rate in the previous vote. They have no other advantage in this vote, but if you want to avoid voting blindly, some combo of these would be the picks.
  1. ABBA - Lay All Your Love On Me
  2. ABBA - Voulez-Vous
  3. Addison Rae - Nothing On (But the Radio)
  4. Ariana Grande - Dangerous Woman
  5. Beyoncé - Blow
  6. Billie Eilish - Ocean Eyes
  7. Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa - One Kiss
  8. Chloe x Halle - Tipsy
  9. Christina Aguilera - Your Body
  10. CHVRCHES - Asking for a Friend
  11. CHVRCHES - Final Girl
  12. Daft Punk - Giorgio By Moroder
  13. Fiona Apple - Cosmonauts
  14. Flo Milli - Beef FloMix
  15. Hilary Duff - Come Clean
  16. Jai Paul - BTSTU
  17. Kesha - Take It Off
  18. Kylie Minogue - Supernova
  19. LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends
  20. LOONA - LOONATIC
  21. Lorde - A World Alone
  22. Lorde - Hard Feelings / Loveless
  23. Mariah Carey - Obsessed
  24. Marina - Bubblegum Bitch
  25. Mon Laferte - Tu Falta De Querer
  26. Rina Sawayama - 10-20-40
  27. Shygirl - Freak
  28. Slayyyter - Daddy AF
  29. Sonic the Hedgehog - Escape from the City
  30. The Veronicas - Untouched
  31. The Weeknd - After Hours
  32. Tinashe - Superlove
  33. Wolf Alice - Play the Greatest Hits
Our other topic of the day is the much beloved Payola Slot, an underrepresented category of rate that we guarantee placement in our next rate selection cycle (which will kick off in full sometime in the second week of May.) The vote here will require you to rank each of these categories from most (1) to least (4) preferred to get payola'd into the next cycle. When the submission form opens, people will be able to submit their ideas that fall under this category, and one will be guaranteed to be selected. The categories to choose from this cycle are:
Commercial Male Hip Hop (last rate: April 2018)
  • This category aims to highlight the primary hitmakers of hip hop from its inception in the 1980s to the present. Our previous hip hop rates have primarily been in one of two categories: women, or rappers with more critical acclaim than impact on the charts (Tyler the Creator, Brockhampton, etc.) These biases have kept us away from some all time classics of the genre and created a major blindspot, especially now that hiphopheads is on hiatus from doing rates.
  • Example unrated albums: NWA - Straight Outta Compton, Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt, 50 Cent - Get Rich or Die Tryin', A$AP Rocky - Long.Live.A$AP
Dad Rock (last rate: August 2019)
  • Our visits to pre-21st century popular music have largely focused on specific, gay-pop-fan-approved niches like disco, new wave or commercially successful women. But that leaves plenty of untapped wells, primarily in the realm of "dad rock" that you'd hear on oldies AM radio or see get inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame: moments like easy listening, yacht rock, and even hair metal. This category is purposefully broad, but any rate from the 90s or earlier with appeal to the heterosexual masses and at least one male vocalist would most likely suffice.
  • Example unrated albums: Big Brother & The Holding Company - Cheap Thrills, The Eagles - Hotel California, Paul Simon - Graceland, Green Day - Dookie
Music from Western Media Other than Disney (last rate: October 2018)
  • We've done a really good job feeding the Japanese media fans with our anime and video game rates, but our most recent forays into western media soundtracks have involved Disney in some capacity (their animated films, or their Disney Channel films/TV shows). This category aims to cover any music from any Western media industry: film, TV, theater, podcasts maybe? There is plenty to choose from here, but it has been a long time since anyone constructed a rate idea popular enough to be chosen without the all-unifying Mouse.
  • Example unrated albums: Soundtracks to Hamilton, Barbie, Succession, Minecraft
Overlooked Regional Scenes (last rate: February 2017)
  • This category covers popular music local to a particular region that gets minimal coverage on the subreddit. Although the category is not limited to country lines, that is probably your best starting point; think of the long writeups we get sometimes about the superstars of the Philippines or Romania or something that nobody from outside those countries knows.
  • Example unrated albums: Arkells - Rally Cry, Aya Nakamura - Aya, Peso Pluma - Génesis, WizKid - Made In Lagos

HERE is the link to the form that covers both of the above votes. Due at noon EST on Sunday, April 28th, so less than 48 hours from now!
