2024.02.06 23:42 that1persn What is the google.com/webhp url? Comes up when I click the google icon on the top left or use google.com/search.

So whenever I press the google icon at the top left or do google.com/search I'm given the url /webhp.
I looked it up and saw a google help thing saying this, that it's a normal URL, but there's other saying it's some sort of browser hijacker or malware?
I have Bitdefender Premium and have ran the malwarebytes adware cleaner and nothing came up. Is this a case of people fear mongering or just getting things wrong? The only extensions I have are ublock Origin and Volume Master by Peta Sittek.
To be exact, pressing the google icon at the top left brings me to this url: https://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwif1Knz5JeEAxXYjIkEHQgpDDMQPAgJ

I'm trying to copy this effect by Slime Rancher team in Blender as they did or I think they did.
I'll still link my Blender file from my Google docks, HOWEVER I'll link what each group node looks like.
http://forums.monomipark.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=10098le.com/webhp?authuser=2&pli=1 - this is monomipark's break down it's not a tutorial but a rough break down of what they did. I got most things down but I'm having trouble creating the depth they did with the mouth. Which looks like the top photo and properly masks things as they move them around in space. From my understanding they use Blender but I know the last time I posted this, someone said it might be in Unity, this repost is just a correction post and I've deleted the last post.

2023.08.15 17:09 bahute67 I use MacBook Air. I want to get rid of “webhp” google.

As the title said, I’m in deep trouble (for those who don’t know, “Google Webhp” is a virus that steals your informations). I tried basically everything. I tried clearing cache, I tried Malwarebyte. I tried deleting all the extension that the virus installed on my computer. I tried deleting Google chrome and reinstall it back - still doesn’t fix anything - and then I found out that even Safari get caught with this virus (I use only 2 browser on Mac: Chrome and Safari), which means that the infection is at a deeper level. What’s to do next?

2023.06.01 05:21 Johnny-Galt-Jr Beginner's Guide to Growing Marijuana

Beginner's Guide

So you want to start growing cannabis, but have no idea where to start?

Items you will need

We also have starter shopping lists put together here that can help you pick a light & tent appropriate for your grow area & # of plants.

Grow Area

Next, you need to determine where your grow will take place. Will it be your closet, attic, basement, custom grow box, etc.? The ideal place needs to be well ventilated and large enough to grow plants to your desired height and width whilst having lighting, fans, and other equipment in there as well. Also, keep in mind that you don't want any light leaks, this is important for stealth and flowering reasons.
Once you have chosen your designated grow area, make sure you have thoroughly cleaned it, painted the walls white or hang reflective material. You do not want a dirty grow room.
Once you have prepared the room, you can now begin to install your lights and ventilation. Be sure that everything is sturdy and done properly. If you half ass this, it's possible that later on in your grow something could fall and destroy your crop. Take your time and do it right.
Keep your lights close as you can. A simple test to see if they are too close is to place your hand at the top of your plant and hold it there for 30 seconds. If your hand does not burn from the heat, neither will the plant
Types of lighting to be used and how much to use:

Planting your first seeds

This is usually where a lot of mistakes take place, so please read this carefully.
There are several ways to germinate your seeds. Placing them inside or on top of a damp paper towel in a dark place), drop them in a shot glass. Or just simply planting them in dirt. Put them in a soaked rockwool cube.
To germinate in dirt you want to start off in a small growing container. Wet the soil first, stick your pinky about half way down then drop 1 seed in. Cover the hole lightly, don't compact the dirt too much. Now, place it under your lighting for 24 hours a day. It may take up to 10 days before it sprouts, so be patient. Seeds don't always sprout, if it's been 15 days and still no show you can probably call it quits and plant a new seed.
Once you have a sprouted seed, water as needed.

Vegetation Period

Soon, your plant will out root the small container it's in You will need to transplant it into a much larger container. Prepare your new, large, drain-able pot. Take the container your plant is in, and gently bend the sides. What this does is break off any dirt or roots that are touching the inside walls. Now that you have done this, you can carefully and slowly turn the cup upside down and the contents of the cup will slide right out. You can break off some of the dirt, but do not let any of the roots be exposed to light. They will dry out and die. Quickly, place your plant into the new pot. Give it a nice watering and place it back into the grow room under 24-on/0-off hours of lighting (or 18/6). Your plant will probably not grow for a day or so, this is normal after transplanting.
It is important that you keep your plants under a strict 24/0 or 18/6 lighting schedule during the vegetation period. If they get too long a dark period they will begin to flower.

Watering and Nutrients and pH, oh my

Water your plant when the soil is dry. This is the #1 mistake new growers make - they water too often. Overwatering is not "giving the plant too much water" it is "giving the plant water too often." There are two simple steps to watering cannabis:
  1. Wait until the soil is dry a knuckle or so deep (use your finger, poke a hole, feel the dirt).
  2. Add water until you see some drain out the bottom of your pot. Go to step 1.
Nutrients should be used carefully and correctly. Follow the dosing schedule provided by your nutrient line, but ramp up the amount slowly. It is not suggested you start with the full dosage right away, but something like 1/4, then 1/2, and so on. Furthermore, it is also not recommended to use nutrients with every watering. Most alternate or put two plain-water feedings in between a nutrient-water feeding.
pH testing is important as all the nutrients you are feeding your plant will only be absorbed by the roots under the proper conditions, and those proper conditions are dictated by the pH of the nutrient mix and the soil. Test your water before adding nutrients, test your nutrient mix, and test your run-off. You want the nutrient+soil mixture to be in the 6.3-6.8 range for soil. You want the nutrient mix to be in the 5.5-6.1 range for a hydroponic set up. Consult these charts for more information. You may need to obtain pH up or pH down products to regulate the water and/or nutrient mix to achieve the correct pH balance.

Training

There are many ways to train your plant to increase the yield. Use one or multiple of these techniques to create more tops/colas (budsites) or to promote stronger stalks and more vigorous nutrient uptake.
It is very important that you do this during vegetation and not in flowering. Abuse them in veg, treat them like princesses in flowering.
You can keep your plant in vegetation as long as you wish. However, most people have space limitations. The key is, grow your plants to about half of your space limits (remember to add space for your light and space for cool air beneath the light). The plants tend to double (or sometimes triple) in height in the early flowering stage. After 2-3weeks of flowering most will have hit their maximum height.

Cloning

Cloning is a rather easy and faster alternative compared to planting seeds every cycle. Typically, you should cut your clones a couple weeks prior to flowering to give the mother plant a chance to heal and regrow. Here is a thorough guide on cloning.

Flowering Period

In order to activate flowering, you will need to switch your lighting schedule to a strict 12/12 schedule. This means 12 hours of light and 12 hours of pure darkness Any light leaks can cause damage, please be sure it's dark.
You will also want to start adding your blooming/flowering nutrients of your choice. Again, it might be a safe idea to start off small and work your way up to the suggested amount.
After about a week or two, you will also be able to determines its sex. It is a very easy thing to do. If you are not sure on the sex, post pictures and ask the community.
If you get any males, you will need to chop them down and get rid of it. The reason for this is, if those pollen sacks pop, the pollen will spread and the females will become covered with his pollen. To simplify this, she will then produce seeds within her bud and the bud will be less potent. Ideally, you want a non pollinated female, she will produce the strongest and best weed.
As flowering proceeds, you will notice translucent trichomes appear. This is how you will judge when your grow is ready to be harvested. This is ultimately up you depending on what type of high you are looking for. You can expect these to appear around 6-8 weeks or even 10-12 weeks on some strains. Patience is virtue.

Harvesting

Chop and then cure the buds.

Closing Remarks

Growing marijuana is a fun hobby and the outcome is very rewarding. However, it is hard and you need to be dedicated before getting started.

2022.05.13 22:04 StillaCentristin2021 Understanding Codependence as "Soft-Core" Cult Dynamics...

Understanding Codependence as "Soft-Core" Cult Dynamics...

...and Cult Dynamics as "Hard-Core" Codependenc
My two theses here are that 1) cults of personality are little other than large networks of what can range up to an extreme form of codependency, and 2) that understanding the operational dynamics of cults can be highly useful to sponsors and sponsees in Co-Dependents Anonymous, as well as to treatment professionals. One paradigm informs the other in both cases.
(For those unfamiliar with the concept, patterns and characteristics of co-dependence, one can click on the preceding links to come up to speed very quickly. For material on co-dependence in depth, please see Anonymous, Beattie, Cermak, Evans, Mellody, Rapson & English, Schaef, Weinhold & Weinhold, and Whitfield in the Resources & References at the end of this paper. For a quick primer on the characteristics of cults, give Dan Goleman's list a look.) For any students of sociology who stumble upon this, suffice it to say that the organizational platform here is built on Spencer's, Durkheim's and Parson's "structural functionalism," and that those who grasp that concept in depth are very easily able to see the operational similarities between codependence and cult dynamics.)
I grew up in Hollywood. It's no surprise to me that several large cults of human potential have flourished in soil pre-treated to ardent belief in (excessive) self esteem, black and white / all-or-nothing thinking, obsession with achievement and fame, and submission to dominating authority. Observed through the lens of those four concepts (aka: perfectionism, eitheor dichotomism, narcissism and authoritarianism), the attachment and devotion to what some might call a self-destructive degree of co-dependence near the Soboba Indian Reservation close to San Jacinto, California (described in recent articles in the Los Angeles Times and The New Yorker magazine) may make a lot more sense.
More at the link at the top of this topic and the embedded links....
I was reminded of this article when I read one unnamed poster here, who was confused by the term "mansplaining" as they defended EVERYTHING trumps has done in the last 6 years,,,,,saying he hasn't been proven to be.....a typical co-dependent cultist, IMO!

2022.02.15 03:12 bikingfencer 2nd Chronicles, chapter 24, The rise and fall of Joash - https://esv.literalword.com/?q=2+Chronicles+24

2nd Chronicles
Chapter Twenty-four - Kingship [of] YO-’ahSh [Joash] in YeHOo-DaH ["YHVH Knew", Judah]
“Joash, seven years old, owed his accession to the priest Jehoiada, and his preservation in infancy to Jehoiada’s sister (22:11).” (Elmslie, 1954, III p. 506)
-1. Son [of] seven years was Yo-’ahSh in his kinging,
and forty year[s] kinged in Jerusalem,
and [the] name [of] his mother was TseeB-YaH [“Gazelle YHVH”, Zibiah], from Be’ayR ShahBah' ["Well Oath", Beersheba].
-2. And did, YO-’ahSh, the upright in [the] eyes of YHVH all [the] days of YeHO-YahDah' ["YHVH Knew", Jehoiada] the priest.
“The boy king does a fine job as long as (‘because’ 2 Kgs [Kings] 12:2) he lets the priest [Jehoiada] make the decisions.” (North, 1990, p. 379)
-3. And he married [וישא, VahYeeSah’], YeHO-YahDah', to him wives two,
and were born to him sons and daughters.
………………………………………………………………..
24:4-14. The Chronicler could rejoice to credit the young king with making arrangements for the repair and maintenance of the temple, which was in shocking condition due to Athaliah and her partisans (sons). He could assign to the Levites charge of the generous contributions for the ‘fabric fund,’ which the laity placed in an offertory box. This account subtly differs from II Kings 12:5-16, where seemingly the first intention for effecting repairs was to use part of the clergy’s revenues, and the offertory box was resorted to only when the proposal was stultified by clerical opposition. Revisers (in vss [verses]. 5, 6, 9, 14a) overlaid what the chronicler wrote in order to align proceedings with the provision concerning maintenance of the tabernacle in the desert (… Welch…).” (Elmslie, 1954, III pp. 506-507)
-4. And there was afterward with [the] heart [of] YO-’ahSh to renew [את, ’ehTh (indicator of direct object; no English equivalent)] House YHVH.
-5. And he collected [את, ’ehTh] the priests and the Levites, and said to them,
“Go out to cities of YeHOo-DaH ["YHVH Knew", Judah],
and collect from all YeeSRah-’ayL ["Strove God", Israel] silver to strengthen [את, ’ehTh] house [of] your Gods, from enough year in year,
and hasten to word.”
“This is the first instance of such a general collection for building or repairing a house of God.
From year to year] It must have been in a state of great dilapidation, when it required such annual exertions to bring it into a thorough state of repair.” (Clarke, 1831, p. II 570)
-6. And called, the king, to YeHO-YahDah', the head,
and said to him,
“Why have you not inquired upon the Levites to bring from YeHOo-DaH and from Jerusalem [את, ’ehTh] burden of MoSheH ["Withdrawn", Moses], slave [of] YHVH, and the assembly to YeeSRah-’ayL, to Tent [of] the Witness [העדות, Hah'ayDOoTh]?”
The collection - of Moses] This was the poll-tax fixed by Moses, of half a shekel, which was levied off every man from twenty years old and upwards; and which was considered as a ransome for their souls, that there might be no plague among them. See Exod. xxx. 12-14.” (Clarke, 1831, p. II 570)
“Our text does not report the fact that Joash allowed some 10 years to elapse before taking drastic action.” (North, 1990, p. 379)
(-7. For 'ahThahL-YahHOo [“Constrained YHVH”, Athaliah] the Wicked, her sons had burst [את, ’ehTh] House the Gods,
and also all holies of House YHVH they had made to Be'ahLeeYM [Baals].)
-8. And said, the king, and they made chest one,
and gave it in Gate House YHVH Outer.
-9. And they gave voice in YeHOo-DaH and in Jerusalem to bring to YHVH [the] burden of MoSheH, slave of the Gods upon YeeSRah-’ayL in [the] desert.
-10. And were happy, all the princes and all the people,
and they brought and sent forth to [the] chest until to completion [לכלה, LeKhahLayH].
-11. And it was in time was brought [את, ’ehTh] the chest unto [the] officer of [פקדת, PeQOoDahTh] the king in [the] hand of the Levites,
and as they saw that [כי, KeeY] multitudinous was the silver,
and came an accountant [of] the king and an officer [of] priest the head,
and they emptied [ויערו, VeeYo'ahROo] [את, ’ehTh] the chest, and bore it, and returned it unto its place.
-12. And gave it, the king and YeHO-YahDah', unto doer [of] activity, slavery of House YHVH,
and there were hired masons [חצבים, HoTsBeeYM] and carpenters [וחרשים, VeHahRahSheeYM] to renew [את, ’ehTh] House YHVH,
and also to craftsmen of [לחרשי, LeHahRahShaY] iron and bronze, to strengthen the house of YHVH.
-13. And they did doings of the activity,
and ascended long to activity in their hand,
and they stood [את, ’ehTh] House the Gods upon its condition [מתכנתו, MahThKooNeThO], and encouraged it [ויאמצהו, VahYe'ahMeTsooHOo].
-14. And as they completed, they brought before the king and YeHO-YahDah' [את, ’ehTh] remainder [of] the silver,
and they made it utensils to House YHVH,
utensils of ministry and the ascendings,
and spoons and utensils of gold and silver,
and there were ascendings ascended in House YHVH always,
all [the] days of YeHO-YahDah'.
“A correction of 2 Kgs 12:13, curiously suppressing 12:15 (the priests kept no audit of the funds they passed to their paymasters, with whom they had an understanding; meanwhile the Temple repairs did not eat into the priests’ stipends).” (North, 1990, p. 379)
………………………………………………………………..
15-26. On the death of Jehoiada a faction which favored Athaliah’s unregenerate regime gained the good will of Joash. That may well be true. This development leads up to the dark end of Joash’s reign. Threatened by victories of Hazael, the powerful king of Syria, Joash is said to have purchased immunity by use of temple treasure, and thereafter to have been assassinated by his servants. An old tradition may provide the vivid tale of the murder of the prophet Zechariah (see Luke 11:51).” (Elmslie, 1954, III pp. 508-509)
-15. And aged, YeHO-YahDah', and grayed [וישבע, VahYeeSBah'] days, and died,
son of a hundred and thirty year[s] in his death.
-16. And they buried him in City David with the kings,
for he did good in YeeSRah-’ayL, and with the Gods and His house.
They buried him - among the kings] He had, in fact been king in Judah; for Joash, who appears to have been a weak man, was always under his tutelage.” (Clarke, 1831, p. II 571)
-17. And, after [the] death of YeHO-YahDah', came princes of YeHOo-DaH,
and they bowed to [the] king; so harkened, the king, unto them.
-18. And they left [את, ’ehTh] House YHVH, Gods of their fathers,
and they slaved [את, ’ehTh] the ’ahShayReeYM [the groves of the goddess Ashera] and [את, ’ehTh] the graven images [העצבים, Hah'ahTsahBeeYM],
and there was fury [קצף, QehTsehPh] upon YeHOo-DaH and Jerusalem in their guilt.
-19. And he sent forth in them prophets to return them unto YHVH,
and they testified in them, and they did not give ear.
-20. And [the] spirit [of] Gods clothed [את, ’ehTh] ZeKhahR-YaH ["Remembered YHVH", Zechariah], son [of] YeHO-YahDah' the priest,
and he was stood from upon to people,
and he said to them:
“Thus said the Gods,
‘Why are you transgressing [את, ’ehTh] commandments [of] YHVH and not succeeding?’
For you left [את, ’ehTh] YHVH,
and he left you.”
“This Zechariah-ben-Jehoiada is doubtless the one of Luke 11:51, called son of Barachiah in Matt [Matthew] 23:35 by assimilation to Isa [Isaiah] 8:2” (North, 1990, p. 379)
-21. And they conspired upon him, and stoned him [וירגמו, VahYeeRGeMOo] [with] stone, in command of the king, in [the] courtyard of House of YHVH.
“What a most wretched and contemptible man was this, who could imbrue1 his hands in the blood of a prophet of God, and the son of the man who had saved him from being murdered, and raised him to the throne! Alas, alas! Can even kings forget benefits? But when a man falls from God, the devil enters into him; and then he is capable of every species of cruelty.” (Clarke, 1831, p. II 571)
-22. And did not remember, YO-’ahSh the king, the mercy that did YeHO-YahDah', his father, with him, and he killed [את, ’ehTh] his son.
And as he died, he said,
See, YHVH, and inquire him!”
The LORD look upon it, and require it.] And so he did; for, at the end of that year, the Syrians came against Judah, destroyed all the princes of the people, sent their spoils to Damascus; and Joash, the murderer of prophet, the son of his benefactor, was himself murdered by his own servants. Here was a most signal display of the divine retribution.” (Clarke, 1831, p. II 571)
-23. And it was to [the] cycle of [לתקופת, LeeThQOoPhahTh] the year, ascended upon him [the] force of ’ahRahM [Syria],
and they came unto YeHOo-DaH and Jerusalem,
and ruined [וישחיתו, VahYahShHeeYThOo] [את, ’ehTh] all [the] princes of the people,
from people and all their spoil they sent forth to [the] king [of] DahRMahSehQ [Damascus].
-24. For in few [במצער, BeMeeTs'ahR] men came [the] force [of] ’ahRahM,
and YHVH gave in[to] their hand force to multitude much,
for they left [את, ’ehTh] YHVH, Gods of their fathers.
And [את, ’ehTh] YO-’ahSh they did judgments.
“Joash, instead of going free for his simony, is made out to have died of it.” (North, 1990, p. 379)
-25. And in their going from him,
(for they left him in diseases multitudinous),
conspired upon him, his slaves, in bloods of sons of YeHO-YahDah', the priest,
and killed him upon his bed.
And he died, and they buried him in City David,
and they did not bury him in graves [of] the kings.
“The conspiracy laconically condemned in 2 Kgs 12:20 appears here as an act of righteous moral retribution, and its punishing is blamed in 25:2-3.” (North, 1990, p. 379)
-26. And these were the conspirators upon him:
ZahBahD ["Endowed", Zabad], son of SheeM'ahTh [“Heard”, Shimeath] the 'ahMONeeYTh [Ammonitess],
and YeHOo-ZahBahD ["YHVH Endowed", Yehozabad], son of SheeMReeYTh [“Guardian”, Shimrith] the MO’ahBeeYTh [Moabitess].
“The two persons here mentioned were certainly not Jews; the mother of one was an Ammonitess, and the mother of the other was a Moabitess. Who their fathers were we know not … Foreigners should be banished from the person of the sovereign by strong and efficient laws: even in this country they have often been the cause of much political wo [sic -woe].” (Clarke, 1831, pp. II 571-572)
“Comparison of this verse with Ezra 9-10 shows that Chr [Chronicles] was written after Ezra.” (North, 1990, p. 379)
-27. And his sons multiplied the burden upon them, and founded House the Gods;
lo they [הנם, HeeNahM] are written upon Commentary [מדרש, MeeDRahSh] [of] Account [of] the Kings.
“We have met with this before; but these works are all lost, except the extracts found in Kings, Chronicles, and Ezra. These abridgements were the cause of the neglect, and finally of the destruction, of the originals. This has often been the case in works of great consequence. Trogus Pompeius wrote a general history of the world which he brought down to the reign of Augustus, in forty-four volumes. Justin abridged them into one volume, and the original is lost.” (Clarke, 1831, p. II 572)

2021.12.19 02:51 acbrooke Feeling Detached: 101 Grounding Techniques

You're Going to Be Ok

Dissociation is a common reaction to extreme stress and trauma (or reminders of the trauma). Your brain is just doing it's best at trying to protect you! You may feel disconnected right now, but remember: you are not alone and this feeling isn't permanent. Below are 101 grounding techniques that can help alleviate feelings of detachment and bring you back into the present moment.

101 Grounding Techniques

  1. Open your eyes! (Sounds simple and obvious, but you’d be amazed how instinctively you close them during symptoms, and just how much more you dissociate with them closed!)
  2. Put your feet on the floor. (I know it feels safer and cozier tucked up in a ball or with your legs up on the chair, but pressing your feet firmly into the floor and opening up your body is a grounding must!)
  3. Uncover your ears. (Another “duh” one, but for many in flashbacks, it’s instinctive, aaand not something most wanna let go of easily. But holding that position keeps your brain convinced that you’re in danger. Plus! You can’t hear! ;) And you’re gonna want your hearing.)
  4. Name 5 things you can see.
  5. Name 4 things you hear.
  6. Name 3 things you can smell.
  7. Touch a variety of textures and fabrics. List them to yourself as you do so. Describe them to yourself. Do you like them? Dislike them?
  8. Remind yourself of the date/year. (Or look on your phone to learn it.)
  9. Remind yourself of your name, how old you are, where you are, and why you’re there.
  10. Take several deep deep breaths. Exhale longer than you inhale.
  11. Start separating the past from the present. (Notice all the things that are different from the memories or thoughts that are being so intrusive - i.e. electronics that weren’t around back then, that you’re outside now not inside, that there are people around you that you didn’t know then, that you're an adult, that you live somewhere else, etc etc.)
  12. Look at your hands and feet. Notice they’re adult hands. Orient yourself to your body as you watch your fingers move.
  13. Disengage from staring off or focusing too intently on one object or area for too long.
  14. Stop swaying, rocking, or other rhythmic behaviors that may be trancing you. Yes, we know just how enticing and comforting and mindless this can be, but it may be making things worse. If you’re struggling instead with feeling frozen, try rocking just mildly BUT try not to fall into any sort of “rhythm”.
  15. Vocalize. Say something to yourself. Hum. Sing. ..anything to hear and feel your voice in your throat. It also reminds you that you HAVE a voice.
  16. Turn on some music. (Try to keep the music current if you’re struggling with flashbacks.)
  17. Splash your face with/run your hands under cold water.
  18. Chew mint or cinnamon gum. Notice the intense flavor and powerful scent.
  19. Suck on mints or sour candies - or anything with a really intense taste and smell. You don’t have to like it, it just needs to get your attention.
  20. Repeat a calming mantra to yourself.
  21. Color breathing.
  22. Internal communication. Remind parts who may be triggered that you’re safe and okay, just upset or experiencing symptoms right now.
  23. Name 5 things you can see that are blue.
  24. Spot 5 circles you can see in the room/your line of vision.
  25. Find all the diamond-shaped items you can see. (This one’s harder!)
  26. Find 3 things that are orange. (...or any other rare color.)
  27. Call up a friend or safe person to talk to.
  28. Sing along with the radio or your iPod. (This is particularly useful in the car.)
  29. If you’re driving and starting to drift, grip the steering wheel and notice all of its grooves and edges and seams. (If you’re too dissociated, immediately pull over and start re-grounding while sitting still before driving again.)
  30. Crack a window (this is particularly useful in a car, but works at home, too). Feel the wind and notice the new sound by your ears.
  31. Trace all the fabrics and seams of furniture or clothing articles within reach. Note to yourself the difference between the cool buttons, rougher denims, soft smooth surfaces, and jagged zippers.
  32. If you are lying in bed when it begins, sit up. Laying down can make it much more difficult to ground and your other techniques may less effective.
  33. Journal. Write down what’s happening - particularly if it’s upsetting. Fold the page over into the book so you can't see anything you wrote anymore. Seal up and contain the dark stuff there and shut the book tight where it can’t bother you anymore. Then reconvene with other grounding techniques once it's away.
  34. Write a note to someone, or even yourself. Feel the pen or pencil graze against the paper and notice the color as it hits the page.
  35. Play calming apps or games on your phone or tablet. (If they are trancing, try to play something else or turn the phone off if you can't resist.)
  36. Stretch. Open up your body so wide and press your feet firmly into the ground. Orient yourself to your body from the top of your head to the tip of your toes.
  37. Dance. If you have the room to do so, do a silly dance or a even a serious one. Notice as you regain your balance and coordination from when you started.
  38. Try some brain puzzles like Sudoko, word searches, or game apps with puzzles that require problem-solving.
  39. Send text messages or write yourself a note on your phone. Feel your fingers tapping the glass as you type and try hitting all the right letters. Notice any of the haptic feedback with each long press or short tap.
  40. Pet a kitty or dog or other animal that may be around.
  41. Take your dog (or cat ;) ) for a walk.
  42. Change scenery. If you’re in the living room, go to the kitchen. If you’re in the bathroom, head to the dining room. If you’re in the bedroom, walk outside. If you’re outside, go somewhere new. A change of scenery can do a lot, even if you don’t know why the first place was causing you so much grief.
  43. Watch some funny videos on YouTube. (Maybe even make yourself a playlist of good laughs for when you’ll need them.)
  44. Put on hand lotions or antibacterial gels that have a strong fragrance. Are they cool or warm? Thin or thick? Soft or stinging?
  45. Paint your nails. Notice the intense scent and vibrant color. Guys can do this too!
  46. Take your current nail polish off if you have any on. Notice the pungency of the acetone. (Please don’t do this if you’re extra ungrounded. Your skin and potential furniture items will not appreciate an accident.)
  47. Feed your pets if you have them.
  48. Eat something - you may be very hungry. Notice all the different flavors and textures and scents. Perhaps choose something with a lot of flavor.
  49. Get a cold, cold glass of water. Feel the coldness in your throat and against your hand. Notice the slippery condensation on the glass with your fingers.
  50. Drink coffee - even if you don’t like it. Though, be careful about making it too hot. That can be hard to judge if you’re too ungrounded.
  51. Take a bath or shower if that isn’t triggering or an OCD behavior for you. Notice the water pressure and temperature. Smell each individual product before using it. If the shower itself is what’s making you ungrounded but you must take one, narrate to yourself the steps you're taking - almost as if you were hosting a YouTube tutorial. Name the products you're using and even describe to yourself why you like/use them. (Also, bringing music that REALLY pumps you up can really help you stay grounded if you're struggling with showers.)
  52. Play a guitar or piano, or other instrument (if that’s something you can do). Heck, play them even if you have no idea what you're doing! Listen to all the crazy notes you can make. Feel the strings or keys and all the various textures against your fingertips.
  53. Reality-test with a friend. If you aren’t sure if something you’re feeling, seeing, hearing or thinking is real, ask a safe friend to help you decide what is fact from fiction, flashback from present, old trauma messages or your current situation.
  54. Check inside to see if parts need something and/or if they are keeping you ungrounded on purpose or just to get your attention (DID-specific). Try to meet their needs if they reveal them to you and if they are reasonable. Engage in more elaborate internal communication if not.
  55. Watch a cartoon or kids movie - particularly if you have younger parts inside who need the comfort. Do this even if you don’t have parts. You probably still need it, too. ;)
  56. Snuggle up with a suuuuper soft and snuggly blanket or robe. Feel how incredibly warm or soft it is. Notice its threading and colors. What does it smell like?
  57. If you’re outside, slip off your shoes and press your toes into the ground. Is it cool or warm? Jagged or soft? Squishy or muddy? Pavement or macadam? Grass or dirt?
  58. Jump up and down or bounce on the balls of your feet. Feel your shoulders and arms flop and flounce about.
  59. Change all the notification bells on your cell phone. Each time they make a new noise that you aren’t used to, you’ll be startled back to awareness.
  60. Take any medications you may have missed. Use your PRN’s if necessary; take pain or anxiety medications if that is what is causing your dissociation.
  61. If you are in a car (passenger or driver), adjust the seat into a different position - even one that’s just slightly uncomfortable. Stretch your legs out far and lift your head up tall. Wiggle about. If you’re a passenger, look around the inside of the car instead of out the window for a bit. Then switch. (..your gaze, not parts ;) )
  62. If you are the driver, keep your eyes peeled for green cars. Notice every license plate with a B in it. If it’s a particularly long drive, play the alphabet game (but not to the point of real distraction. We want safer driving here, not less!)
  63. Use your imagery techniques - particularly for pain or intense emotions. Dial them down to a manageable level. Set a 15 minute timer to check back in and observe what level they're at now. It’s okay if they're "worse". The goal is just to be aware of where they are at, not necessarily improving or changing them (unless you want to).
  64. List or write down your feelings in that moment. Describe them in extreme detail. If they were a color, what would they be? If they were a weather condition, which would you see? A temperature? A texture? Loud or quiet? Animate or inanimate? Soft or sharp?
  65. Make some mint or other herbal tea. Inhale the scent deep into your lungs. Sip it before putting anything in it. Is it bitter? Then fix it how you like it. What were the differences?
  66. Do some jumping jacks or just a few sit-ups or push-ups. (You can also workout for longer too, but it's not necessary.) Get the blood flowing. Jog in place. Shake it off like T Swifty and feel the blood as it rushes through you and your limbs buzz as you re-awaken and re-enter your body.
  67. Read a book or a magazine.
  68. Listen to an audiobook or your favorite podcast. Or, find a podcast you’ve never listened to before and give it a try.
  69. Watch something on Netflix or Hulu. Keep it upbeat and current. If you know the oldies-but-goodies are safe for you and won’t disorient you, relish in those re-runs!
  70. Do something goofy - particularly if you are in NO mood for nonsense. Pat your head and rub your tummy. Try to say ridiculous tongue-twisters. You’ll end up cracking up (or being so annoyed!) that you’ll still be way more grounded than you were moments ago. If you're extra grumpy, use that cynicism for a "Try Not to Laugh Challenge" online. The worst that happens is you get some chuckles. Or puppies.
  71. Put in your earbuds and go for a run or a long walk. Get away from where you are and notice allllll the sensory changes outside. Narrate to yourself all that you see and feel and how it's different from where you were.
  72. Progressive muscle relaxation. (There are great guided imageries and how-to steps for this online. This can be really incredibly useful for many, but can be trancing for others at first. Do what works for you!)
  73. Go down the alphabet and list girls’ names for each letter. Then boys’ names. Then unisex. Or try to come up with silly pet’s names for each letter instead. How creative can you get?
  74. Try counting by 3’s or 7’s. Try to get to 200. Then try multiplying by them.
  75. Look out a window or up at the sky. What color is it? What shade name would you call it? Are there clouds or none? Are there stars or no? Can you see the moon from where you are? What about the sun? Any planes out there?
  76. Use safe place imagery if you are having no luck orienting with your present surroundings. Mentally retreat to your safe place in as explicit of detail possible. When you’re feeling calmer, slowly start orienting yourself back to your current surroundings. Start back at the beginning of this list and come back into the room, into the present, and into your body.
  77. Step away from social media or scrolling on your phone. This can be incredibly trancing for some without realizing it. Sit your phone across the room and spend at least 30 minutes doing something entirely different.
  78. Color in an adult coloring book or doodle. Make silly crafts or fingerpaint if you have kid parts that need some attention. Do it even if you don't have parts.
  79. Go swimming if it’s an option or isn’t a triggering experience for you. Notice the water and its temperature. Notice how you can both float and sink. Recreate this in a bathtub if you don’t have a pool ;)
  80. Wash your face or brush your teeth. Do a face mask or use some other self-care toiletries to freshen up. Notice all the smells and textures. Notice how they feel on your skin and how refreshed and alert you feel.
  81. Tap the sides of your kneecaps. Or, cross your arms, making an X on your chest, and tap your collarbones with your fingertips. Give your body some new neural feedback and stimulation to take in. Notice how it feels both weird and rhythmically calming at the same time. Observe your level of anxiety as you do - how does it change?
  82. Do yoga or tai chi if you’re familiar with either and find those to be useful to you. Make it up as you go even if you don't actually know what you're doing ;)
  83. Play a sport that you enjoy (or heck, even something you’re bad at! It certainly requires more effort that way!). Shoot some hoops, pepper with a volleyball, kick around a soccer ball. Or, just make up your own new game!
  84. Organize a desk drawer or closet shelf. Clean your makeup or artist brushes that you’ve probably neglected for quite awhile. Clean your sneakers or something else you’ve been needing to do but keep forgetting.
  85. Vacuum a room or do the dishes. Feel the vibrations and sweeping motions of the vacuum …or the temperature of the water and scent of the soap if you’re washing dishes. (If these cleaning/organizational things will trigger OCD tendencies you may have, maybe skip these and try the OTHER hundred techniques! Or, y'know, just make everything SUPER messy instead. :) )
  86. Take some ice in your hands or place it in a baggie and hold it for a little while. (Make sure you’re at least grounded enough to know if it’s too extreme of a cold. We don't want you to damage your skin.)
  87. Take some pictures on your phone or with a digital camera. Play with filters or photo editing apps/software that you’d never normally pick. What cool things can you make?
  88. Watch a documentary on YouTube or Netflix. Find a subject that either completely fascinates you or even one you know very little about. What new things can you learn?.
  89. If you’re struggling with grounding after nightmares, scribble down the nightmare in a journal - just the surface of what it was about. Then fold the page over or up real tight into the journal (or even tear it out completely). Know that it is contained in there and it’s not coming out again. Then remind yourself of the date, where you are, how old you are, and that it was just a nightmare. Then try to do some pleasing, safe-place imagery type visualizations before laying your body back down for some rest.
  90. Light some candles. Notice the glow and the flicker. What do they smell like? Can you feel the warmth coming off of them? (If you are REALLY struggling with grounding, please please please don’t do this one. We don’t ever want you to catch anything on fire. But if you’re just loosely struggling or feeling a little fuzzy, this a great option.)
  91. If you’re struggling with derealism, start naming all the things you know to be inarguably true. You know what name is on your birth certificate. ..how old you are now. ..where you live. ..where you are standing. ..that it is either day or night. ..that you are either alone or in the company of people. Continue on until you feel yourself becoming more rooted in reality. Then you can start challenging the things you weren’t really quite so sure about. (You may need a friend to help you and that’s okay. If you're a Hunger Games fan, you can think of it as the Real or Not Real game with a loved one or parts inside.)
  92. Squeeze or massage your muscles. If this isn’t triggering to you, deeply dig into the muscles in your shoulders and down your arms. Move your thighs and calves around until you feel all that fresh blood finding them. Notice all the new and interesting sensations you feel now that you weren’t feeling before.
  93. If you are frozen still, just start with very small movements. Start with just wiggling and scrunching your toes. Then try rolling your ankles. Now wiggle your fingers or tap them on a surface. Roll your wrists. Slowly work up to bending your knees and elbows. Hips and shoulders. Roll your neck. Open your mouth and stretch your jaw. Feel all the parts of your body slowly come back to life. All it takes is a small start, don't worry about the rest until you're there.
  94. Take a nap or get ready for bed. You may just be so overtired that you’ll never be fully grounded until you get some rest.
  95. Fold laundry or do some other similar busywork that requires a good bit of motion but also gives you something like scent and texture to work with, too. (Who wants to be fully grounded for doing laundry anywayyyy ;) )
  96. Drink a carbonated beverage. Notice all the fizzies in your nose and down your throat.
  97. Disengage from anything that’s too overstimulating. You may have too MANY things going on at once. Turn down a TV or stop music that might be playing. Leave crowded or busy rooms. Keep yourself engaged with your surroundings but also disengage from too MUCH sensory input.
  98. Keep a grounding stone or similar item in your pocket when you’re out and about. Run your fingers over the stone, contort a Tangle into different shapes, or notice all the notches in your car keys. Find an item like this that works well for you!
  99. Keep a 3x5 card attached to your sun visor in the car, or in your wallet, that clearly and boldly states what year it is, how old you are, where you live, that you are safe now, and a mantra that you may find to be soothing. Personalize it for you and your specific triggers or points of confusion - things you know you get hung up on. That way it can remind you when you aren't able to remind yourself.
  100. Do the same with bathroom mirrors, nightstands, bedroom walls or any other place that you know you commonly struggle. You can make them either discrete or super bold depending on your living situation or understanding of those around you. Referring to these can save you a ton of mental energy when you find yourself in a sudden and intense spell of dissociation and can't even remember what you're supposed to do or think or what coping skills even are.
  101. LAUGH. However you can, by whatever means, try to do something that makes you laugh. It’s one of the most fail-proof ways to get more grounded (even for those whose default coping mechanism is humor and avoidance. Laughing wholly and authentically with your body can still make you more present than you were.) One fail-proof way? Try to LAUGH WITHOUT SMILING. ….you’ll soon be dying over the sound that just escaped your mouth and the ridiculous face you just made trying. You won’t be able keep from bursting into real laughter! And, if you don't believe us or are too proud to give it a try, at least enjoy this video for a laugh. Good luck! “Hurr huh hurrrrr.”

2021.10.10 00:29 not-moses Understanding Codependence as "Soft-Core" Cult Dynamics... ...and Cult Dynamics as "Hard-Core" Codependence

For a quick primer on the characteristics of cults, give Dan Goleman's list a look.)
For any students of sociology who stumble upon this, suffice it to say that the organizational platform here is built on Spencer's, Durkheim's and Parson's "structural functionalism," and that those who grasp that concept in depth are very easily able to see the operational similarities between codependence and cult dynamics.)
We may never really know what all it was that the founder of Hollywood's largest cult had been exposed to that empowered his seemingly messianic (and megalomanic?) quest. Read those who deconstructed the individual, family-of-origin and group dynamics of the National Socialist, Red Chinese and North Korean "thought reform" techniques that made Hitler's, Mao's and Kim's (as well as Sun Myung Moon's) cults of personality possible. (Erich Fromm, Eric Hoffer, Robert J. Lifton, Edgar Schein, Margaret Thaler, Michael Langone, et al, are listed below).
In so doing, it may be evident that the founder of Hollywood's Cult numero uno (who finally expired in a trailer in a tiny village in north San Luis Obispo County) had access to -- as well as a considerable grasp of -- them. And that, at least in the last half century, he was only one of several who may have gotten his or her guru chops from the folks who produced the grisly spectacles of 1933 to 1953.
"Over time, I learned that I could escape the awful feelings of being an incompetent, shameful, guilty, submissive little fool by finding someone else in the cult to dominate, embarrass, belittle, humiliate and demoralize so that I could feel competent, capable and prideful. I learned to do whatever it took to please my dominators, including channeling their domination of me onto other little fools."
For me, anyway, the major shortcoming of many of the fine books out there on cults is that they often pay attention to all the drama but fail to connect all the dots. Nor did they look into whether the top dogs of the era following the founders' deaths are less, equally or even more schooled in the methods of mind control described by those listed above nearly as deeply as Joel Kramer, Diana Alstad, Flo Conway, Jim Siegelman, Steven Hassan, Kathleen Taylor, Mark Galanter, Arthur Deikman and the redoubtable Charles Tart (on his concept of the "consensus trance").
BUT... I'll take a shot at some dot-connecting here. Because over the more than four decades since I first either fell down the well or at least drank some of the Cool Aid in several of these organizations, I was able to see from outside the paradigm, "box," "cage," "cave," "frame," "trap" or consensus trance what was going on inside with ever greater clarity. (In fact, it was a renown psychologist in Beverly Hills for whom I worked in the late 1970s -- who himself had a relatively benign, and far less dangerous, human potential cult going there -- who kicked me in the shins just hard enough to start my own, real growth process.) (But giving credit where it's really due, it was Jiddu Krishnamurti who first put the dots close enough together for me to get some real traction with them.)
Let's look at the four characteristics I have seen again and again among cult members, leaders and escapees, as well as ardent codependents:
1) Excessive "perfectionism)" usually acquired earlier in life.
2) Black and white / all-or-nothing thinking; aka "dichotomism."
3) Blindly ambitious obsession with either achievement and fame or to compensate for earlier invalidation, devaluation, being ignored and/or functionally abandoned; aka "compensatory narcissism."
4) An unusual willingness submit to dominant authority to get the rewards of attention, validation and esteem from others; aka "authoritarianism."
I could have listed credulity, but elected not to do so because it is evident that while many co-dependents and cult members are highly credulous, many others are startlingly given to ardent skepticism; an almost knee-jerk questioning of and/or argument with those who promote propositions that they find dubious. Nevertheless, credulity and skepticism are worth understanding for those who want to comprehend the mentality of many co-dependents and cult members because it points to a particular form of dichotomism.
Neither do I see psychologic paranoia in the behaviors of all co-dependents or cult members. But I have observed it often enough to consider it a high-order correlate. Nor do I see Seligman's "learned helplessness" or Tangney & Dearing's (and Forward's) "toxic shame" in all co-dependents or cult members... but I do see them a lot.
I also see a lot of excessive internalizing (or taking too much responsibility) in both groups, but find some codependents and many cult members to be either externalizing (e.g.: blaming others) or alternatively (and excessively) internalizing and externalizing in a sort of flip-flop / ping-pong fashion. And I see a lot of Van der Kolk's "compulsion to repeat the trauma," but do not (or cannot) see it in enough people of either category to assert that it is universal in either co-dependents or cult members.
Taking those four one at a time in the frame of their relevance to both cult membership and co-dependence:
Excessive Perfectionism
Too much of a good thing may not be.
Many (most?) of the co-dependents and virtually all of the cult members or former members I have known are (often covertly and/or unconsciously) perfectionistic to the point of at least occasional (if not chronic) obsession with saying and doing what they believe to be "correct," "right," "functional" and/or "appropriate." Some came from backgrounds that predisposed them to achievement to meet parental expectations; perhaps because their parents were either high -- and proud -- (or low and shame-infected) achievers themselves. Others seem to have dots connecting their current perfectionism with early life experiences with parents who set them up to "try harder" by ignoring, invalidating, abandoning or otherwise devaluing them.
The worst cases, however, tended to have backgrounds with parents who gave paradoxical injunctions; parents who (overtly) said one thing and then (usually covertly) said or did the opposite so that the child was damned if he did and damned if didn't follow the conflicting -- often overt here and covert there -- instructions. The typical combination of paradoxical injunctions was something like, "Do your best to get rewards from us," and "Do you really expect us to pay any attention?" The child of such parents is often set up (in the fashion of the classic "double-bind") to strive for enough achievement to finally get the attention and approval that still remains out of reach. And the adult child of such parents will often work him- or herself half to death to meet the expectations and requirements of the parental dynamics that remain normalized) in the so-called "superego" between his or her ears. (Wickliff's excellent rundown of family dysfunction as a precursor to cult affiliation is more than germane here.) The manipulation of one's own, perfectionistic moral principles very easily induces (emotional) shame, guilt, remorse, regret and (cognitive) worry and morbid reflection in the minds of those already conditioned, socialized, habituated, accustomed, normalized and institutionalized to these affective) and cognitive states.
Conditioned, socialized, habituated and normalized by their early life experiences to seek approval by being "perfect," such people make terrific (and "highly co-dependent") employees for bosses and employers who care little or nothing about those who backs they climb over to make their own way to the top, regardless of what they say or the minimal (and occasional) rewards they provide to those in the state of anxious attachment. In moderate burnout (before they collapse from stress), they also make fine and dandy salesmen, supporters and slaves for covertly ruthless gurus.
Dichotomism
If there is any one technique of manipulation that stands out for its ubiquity among those who succeed at politics via the building of massive cults of personality, it is all-or-nothing, this-way-or-that, all-good-or-all-bad, black and white thinking. Our culture conditions, socializes, habituates, normalizes and even institutionalizes polarized perception to such an extent throughout childhood that most of us cannot see that we think in terms of "either / or." Researchers estimate that only about five percent of us can be counted upon to regularly see outside the box, frame or paradigm of this possibility or that. Which makes it very easy for politicians, manipulative bosses and gurus to stipulate a choice between two ("obviously") "good" or "bad" opposites. Such stipulation forces the unconscious employee, party or cult member to limit his or her choice to those offered without noticing any others.
Most children are taught by virtually every authority they encounter to "follow the rules" and not to question those rules. The child's natural capacity to simply use his eyes, ears and other senses to tell what is from what is not with respect to anything fairly complex is dulled nearly to the point of extinction by the time he or she is six years old (see Cvencek, Greenwald & Meltzoff, and who knows how many others). From the point of view of the guru, this couldn't be any better. Because -- like any effective politician -- he will present his own explanations of and solutions for life's challenges in either / or terms that exclude all other possibilities.
Compensatory Narcissism
The very word "narcissism" has -- as the result of vernacular usage -- come to mean "too narcissistic for one's own good." The fact that a limited degree of narcissism is actually useful is obvious to those who watch infants set up a fuss to get picked up, fed and otherwise attended to when they are uncomfortable. And those frustrated, learned helpless children who were too often ignored or dismissed when they needed attention usually grow up to be fine candidates for those who understand how easily they can be manipulated by appealing to their healthy, but unmet, narcissistic needs.
I am not speaking of the "classic," entitled narcissist who was "spoiled" by overly indulgent parents (though such people do make good cult fodder, as well). I am talking about the adult child of self-absorbed parents who did not get enough attention, and who grows up having collected all manner of ways to compensate for believing him- or herself to be "unwanted," "unnecessary" and "unimportant." Listen to any card-carrying co-dependent for ten minutes, and then tell me that those three words do not describe their unconscious self-concepts. One need only listen to a cult member for a fraction of that time to grasp how obsessed they are with being wanted, necessary, important and significant.
Authoritarianism
Raised as "victims" on Stephen Karpman's Drama Triangle (by alternate "rescuers" and "punishers"), the typical co-dependent -- and cult member -- has formed an unconsciously foreclosed identity as a victim. And he or she will spend the rest of his or her life trying to get out of the victim corner by rescuing... and if rescuing fails, by persecuting and punishing. This (non-sexual) dominance and submission schematic is glaringly obvious in the world of the cult, regardless of whether it is "religious" or not. (Virtually all cults -- whether they are "religious," psuedo-spiritual or "human potential" -- are set up in a tiered, top-to-bottom hierarchy of relatively more powerful dominators and less powerful submittors; each dominator being submissive to the dominators on the level above. The guru stands at the top of a functional pyramid of increasing dominance from bottom to top and increasing submission from top to bottom.)
Because it seems germane at this point, let's take a quick left turn into Trinkner, et al's, work on Baumrind's parenting styles:
"Authoritative parents are both demanding and controlling, but they are also warm and receptive to their children's needs. They are receptive to bi-directional communication in that they explain to their children why they have established rules and also listen to their children's opinions about those rules. Children of authoritative parents tend to be self-reliant, self-controlled, and content.
"On the other hand, authoritarian parents are demanding and highly controlling, but detached and unreceptive to their children's needs. These parents support unilateral communication where they establish rules without explanation and expect them to be obeyed without complaint or question. Authoritarian parenting produces children who are discontent, withdrawn, and distrustful.
"Finally, in contrast to authoritarian parenting, permissive parents are non-demanding and non-controlling. They tend to be warm and receptive to their children's needs, but place few boundaries on their children. If they do establish rules, they rarely enforce them to any great extent. These parents tend to produce children who are the least self-reliant, explorative and self-controlled out of all the parenting styles."
Morality is as waaaaay twisted in the frame-work, paradigm, cave, cage, box or consensus trance of the cult as it was for most co-dependents and cult members in the interpersonal family system of the family in which they grew up. Twisted morality was so effectively -- and covertly -- socialized, habituated and institutionalized in such families of origin that it seems perfectly normal in the cult or severely co-dependent marriage or workplace.
The recovering co-dependent is at somewhat of an advantage here. He or she hears that long grind of "patterns and characteristics of codependence" at every CoDA meeting they attend. (For them, it's a way of working Steps Six and Seven again and again.) Those who arrived at this weblog from at least somewhat informed perspectives on cult dynamics, however, may find themselves more than a little surprised.
"I judge what I think, say, or do harshly, as never good enough." "I value others’ approval of my thinking, feelings, and behavior over my own." "I constantly seek recognition that I think I deserve." "I have difficulty admitting that I made a mistake." "I need to appear to be right in the eyes of others and will even lie to look good." "I look to others to provide my sense of safety." "I am extremely loyal, remaining in harmful situations too long." "I compromise my own values and integrity to avoid rejection or anger." "I put aside my own interests in order to do what others want." "I am afraid to express my beliefs, opinions, and feelings when they differ from those of others." "I give up my truth to gain the approval of others or to avoid change." "I believe most people are incapable of taking care of themselves." "I attempt to convince others what to think, do, or feel." "I freely offer advice and direction to others without being asked." "I become resentful when others decline my help or reject my advice." "I have to be needed in order to have a relationship with others." "I use charm and charisma to convince others of my capacity to be caring and compassionate." "I use blame and shame to emotionally exploit others." "I adopt an attitude of indifference, helplessness, authority, or rage to manipulate outcomes." "I use terms of recovery in an attempt to control the behavior of others." "I pretend to agree with others to get what I want."
Tell me you've never seen any of this in a cult.
Codependence, Cult Participation & Complex PTSD
Like co-dependents (only generally even moreso), the devoted cult member displays high allostatic loading (especially see Bruce McEwen's, Sonya Lupien's and Robert Sapolsky's work on this very hot topic in abnormal psychology) and other behavioral presentations of complex post-traumatic stress disorder that usually began in childhood. Generally speaking, this allostatic loading was greatly densified in co-dependent, romantic and workplace relationships, as well as religious and other large group activities that were interpersonally stress-inducing, even if they seemed "normal" to the participant. My observation is that this allostatic loading is the direct result of what Susan Forward called "emotional blackmail" (in a truly fine book of the same title) by means of the "F.O.G." manipulations of fear, obligation and guilt.
I have observed repeatedly -- via scans of the brain with magnetic resonance imaging and three-dimensional computer-aided tomography -- that those who have been tortured psychologically have brains that function very similarly to those who have been tortured physically, as well as those exposed to violent, military combat. I have seen scans of the brains of those who have been exposed to chronic -- as well as severe acute -- stress and abuse. The histories may be as different as one can imagine... but the limbic systems look pretty much the same: amygdalae and hippocampi that are either grossly over- or under-size owing to over-growth to deal with relentless threat, or excitotoxicity from being on the receiving end.
Over time, the severely co-dependent or cult member may find he or she needs to drink or drug, gamble, exercise, work, volunteer or otherwise distract him- or herself to excess to try to displace the conflict, anxiety, mania and/or depression typical in the traumatic stress that both causes and results from continued, chronic allostatic loading.
Are cult membership or codependence potentially "deadly?" I wish you could see those scans. As well as the statistics on both fast and slow suicide among people with anxiety-, depression- and mania-soaked, complex PTSD induced by having become "learned helpless" victims at the bottom of Karpman's Drama Triangle.
Treatment
Once programmed and caught in the vicious cycle of trying to escape from what is causing the problem by indulging in yet more of it, is there a way out? I think so, but only for those (more or less as for anyone who has been obsessed or addicted to a substance or behavior like gambling, workaholism, excessive exercise or sex, or severely codependent relationships) who have moved through denial / pre-contemplation and contemplation / consideration into self-identification / acceptance so that they can move on to commitment / action and maintenance / relapse prevention (see Prochaska & DiClemente on the five stages of addiction recovery).
In combination with understanding the fear, obligation & guilt ("FOG") dynamics of cult mind control (e.g.: see above, see Goleman's list of cult danger signs, see Zimbardo's ten lessons from the Milgram studies) have seen the following work for both codependents and cult exiters: Pia Mellody's approach to the 12 Steps of Co-Dependents Anonymous, Albert Ellis's Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Aaron Beck's Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Marsha Linehan's Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Stephen Hayes's Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Stanley Block's Mind-Body Bridging Therapy, and Patricia Ogden's Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for Trauma. Or one can take a look at the 10 StEPs of Emotion Processing, yet another of the new wave of reality therapies that re-ground the mind in observing what is, as opposed to what the mind has been trained to believe. See also The 10 StEPs for Recovery from the Consensus Trance and The 10 StEPs to Freedom from Emotional Blackmail.)
But one may have to employ the consciousness-raising, "howzitoworkingforyou?" techniques of motivational enhancement much as they are used in the treatments of substance abuse and behavioral addictions (including severe, unconscious, ardently denied or unseen co-dependence) to break through the first stage of denial / pre-contemplation to get the co-dependent or cult member on the road through contemplation / consideration to self-identification / acceptance of his or her causes and conditions. Finally, those who may be looking for edification on the causes, conditions, treatment of, and recovery from both co-dependence and cultic thought reform will find an exhaustive list of published resources below. 2021.02.06 03:26 Kjohnstonuscg A little due diligence saves face

I know everyone here is pretty low on the brain power spectrum but that being said I think we all know how google works if not I'll link it. Just type whatever your heart desires in the little box and hit search!
https://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjK6ZT3l9TuAhUo0FkKHeO1CUYQPAgI
That being said spend 5-10 minutes at least if you are going to make a post or send a reply know what the heck it is you are talking about. I've seen a ton of posts and even been replied to with blatantly ill informed people. If I can find a rebuttal in less then 5 minutes your comment was a waste of my time and everyone else's. Stay well informed and provide actual content here were trolls yeah but there is a little more to WSB than strictly trolling bring something to the table thanks guys and girls.

2021.01.21 14:28 WhyWellington Incoming: Updated

Back in 2017 I wrote a response a Redditor asking what they could do in Wellington with some visiting friends or relatives. Since then, about half of the links became broken, info went out of date and some things no loger existed.
I was stoked to recieve my first gold and it became part of the Wellington wiki.
If you're new in town or new to this sub since 2017, here's an updated version for 2021.
If someone hasn't visited Wellington before, the first thing I do is take them up to the Mt Victoria Lookout (walk if they're physically able or Number 20 bus if they're not.) This gives them their bearings and shows how Welly sits within her geography and landscape. This helps later when we go somewhere else and they've got more of an idea as to where they are in relation to the rest of the city.
From there it depends on their interests, where they're from (e.g. not from NZ) and level of fitness/mobility.
Non-NZers should definitely go to Te Papa. If they're in town for a while I'd suggest doing a floor or two per day. Everyone can suffer museum-fatigue- even at Te Papa.
The waterfront Writers Walk is a great way to see a beautiful part of the city and to get to know the feeling and spirit of the city as described by local writers and poets through history.
Any of the official walkways are worthwhile. The City to Sea (Beehive to Island Bay) is my favourite for visitors because you can start it wherever you like in the CBD or Bolton Cemetary or Botanic Gardens then you can do as little or as much of the whole walkway as you like with options to finish in Aro Valley, Brooklyn, Newtown, or Berhampore before you get to Island Bay. All of which have food, beer and bus stops.
There are live gigs or standup on every night of the week at places like Rogue and Vagabond, San Fran, Moon, Meow, Fringe Bar, Valhalla etc.
It's not all about the central area either. Most of the major burbs offer decent foodie offerings these days including Aro Valley, Miramar, Hataitai, Brooklyn, Newtown, Kelburn, Thorndon, Lyall Bay.
Chocoalte Fish, Scorch-o-Rama, Maranui, and Seashore Caberet are iconic out-of-town cafe stops on a sunny day.
There are plenty of rooftop bars these days.
Croc bikes might seem cheezy but anyone you see on them is always smiling and laughing.
Jump on the Kapiti line with a Metlink Explorer day pass pass and jump on and off wherever you like as many times as you want from dawn until midnight. That could include a swim at Waikanae or Raumati beach, the stunning Escarpment Walkway, Adrenalin Forest, Queen Elizabeth Park.
The Wairarapa train to Featherston, Carterton or Masterton makes for some lovely day trip opportunities, too.
If the wind is mostly coming from the north, watching the planes come in at the Moa Point end of the runway is a blast- literally! Time it for when there's plenty of arrivals scheduled. While you're there, might as well check out this unusual landmark.
You can go op shop crazy in Newtown or dedicate a city-wide op shopaganza.
There's takeaway fish & chips 'with a view' options around town. Lyall Bay, Oriental Bay (Did you know The Boat Cafe does takeaway?, Eastbourne and probably more.
If the weather's a bit crap, there are plenty of indie galleries around town or you could do the Secret Art Walk.
If the weather is awesome, a jump off the Taranaki Street Wharf diving platform is a memorable experience. Or you could go to one of the many beaches.
Catch the East West Ferry to Days Bay and hire a kayak or do one of the many walks on that side of the harbour. Also over that side you can hire a bike and ride to Pencarrow Lighthouse
Plenty of old war bunkers out in the burbs. Most with rad graffiti all over them.
People-watch from the the window of Midnight Espresso, or Espressoholic on Cuba or from a beanbag at St. John's or Karaka Cafe.

2020.11.13 06:51 LastDisciple MK-ULTRA Hoax for dummies -or- YOU have been programmed. Find out how: QUINTESSENTIAL MIND CONTROL PROGRAMMING - exposed first - ATTENTION - NOT a joke

Introduction

After reading this you will NEVER EVER click again "CIA can make mind controlled robots" type of illuminati propaganda ... ... unless you were already reduced to a specimen of human cattle.

MK-ULTRA Hoax exposed: Why does the CIA try to convince you so hard that mind control works?

The murder of Robert Kennedy (1) was one of the most successful cases in propagating the "CIA is able to do mind control" hoax, propagated officially by the CIA Web of Disinformation and unofficially by "serious" illuminati media outlets, beginning with Wikipedia. (2) But what is the main reason why the illuminati try to convince you so hard that mind control works? Answer: to divert you from one of the basic facts about God. (3) Because once that has been done, you will no more be able to understand the HORRIBLE TRUTH about YOURSELF: YOU have been programmed. Find out how:

QUINTESSENTIAL MIND CONTROL PROGRAMMING - exposed first - ATTENTION - NOT a joke

The Truth You will not hear the Truth in the illuminati printed and broadcasted media, aka main stream media. In the Web, the English Wikipedia is also totally controlled, which leaves two possibilities to get the Truth:
What was the reaction to the Truth? Just a few Google users will click it each day, after reading the three lines displayed in the results page. The same situation at the last forums: 99.9 pct of the audience will refuse to believe it, despite the facts.

Why? Because of the ONLY mind control programming that does work. (6) Below the PROGRAM SOURCE, where the variables are: [X] = Where the Truth could be seen; [**A**] = LIES; [**B**] = TRUTH.

==== PROGRAM SOURCE for QUINTESSENTIAL MIND CONTROL Why it is *** QUINTESSENTIAL *** for me to keep believing this: [**A**] Because of FIVE essential reasons:
1. I have been believing this for too many years.
2. I have clicked too many articles on that subject.
3. I have stated it too many times.
4. I don't want to be the first to become part of the Lunatic Fringe.
5. I would otherwise have to believe the only other possible alternative. And that one is TOO HORRIBLE to be true.
So like the others in the same situation as I am, which I believe to be 99.9 pct of the [X] community, I will continue to ignore this: [**B**].

==== Example of using the PROGRAM Virginia Tech, a "recursive" example for a start: [**A**] = CIA can use mind control to program human like robots like Cho; [**B**] = Virginia Tech = 9/11 upscaled. (7)

2020.10.11 00:08 bikingfencer II Chronicles 24 - bad king Joash

II Chronicles
Chapter Twenty-four - Kingship [of] YO-’ahSh [Joash] in YeHOo-DaH ["YHVH Knew", Judah]
“Joash, seven years old, owed his accession to the priest Jehoiada, and his preservation in infancy to Jehoiada’s sister (22:11).” (Elmslie, 1954, III p. 506)
-1. Son [of] seven years was Yo-’ahSh in his kinging,
and forty year[s] kinged in Jerusalem,
and [the] name of his mother was TseeB-YaH [“Gazelle YHVH”, Zibiah], from Be’ayR ShaBa` ["Well Oath", Beersheba].
-2. And did, YO-’ahSh, the upright in [the] eyes of YHVH all [the] days of YeHO-YahDah` ["YHVH Knew", Jehoiada] the priest.
“The boy king does a fine job as long as (‘because’ 2 Kgs [Kings] 12:2) he lets the priest [Jehoiada] make the decisions.” (North, 1990, p. 379)
-3. And he married [וישא, VahYeeSah’], YeHO-YahDah`, to him wives two,
and were born to him sons and daughters.
Revisers (in vss.
-5. And he collected [את, ’ehTh] the priests and the Levites, and said to them,
“Go out to cities of YeHOo-DaH,
and collect from all YeeSRah-’ayL ["Strove God", Israel] silver to strengthen [את, ’ehTh] house [of] your Gods,
from enough year in year,
and hasten to word.”
“This is the first instance of such a general collection for building or repairing a house of God.
From year to year] It must have been in a state of great dilapidation, when it required such annual exertions to bring it into a thorough state of repair.” (Clarke, 1831, p. II 570)
-6. And called, the king, to YeHO-YaDa` ["YHVH Knew", Judah], the head,
and said to him,
“Why have you not inquired upon the Levites to bring from YeHOo-DaH ["YHVH Knew", Judah] and from Jerusalem [את, ’ehTh] the burden of MoSheH, slave [of] YHVH, and of the assembly to YeeSRah-’ayL, to Tent [of] the Witness?”

The collection - of Moses] This was the poll-tax fixed by Moses, of half a shekel, which was levied off every man from twenty years old and upwards; and which was considered as a ransome for their souls, that there might be no plague among them. See Exod. [Exodus] xxx. 12-14.” (Clarke, 1831, p. II 570)
“Our text does not report the fact that Joash allowed some 10 years to elapse before taking drastic action.” (North, 1990, p. 379)
(-7. For `ahThahL-YahHOo [Athaliah] the Wicked, her sons had burst [את, ’ehTh] House the Gods,
and also all the holies of House YHVH they had made to Be`ahLeeYM [Baals].)
-8. And said, the king, and they made chest one,
and gave it in Gate House YHVH Outer.
-9. And they gave voice in YeHOo-DaH and in Jerusalem to bring to YHVH [the] burden of MoSheH, slave of the Gods, upon YeeSRah-’ayL in [the] desert.
-10. And were happy, all the princes and all the people,
and they brought and sent forth to [the] chest until to completion [לכלה, LeKhahLayH].
-11. And it was in time was brought [את, ’ehTh] the chest unto [the] officer of the king in [the] hand of the Levites,
and as they saw that [כי, KeeY] multitudinous was the silver,
and came an accountant [of] the king and an officer [of] priest, the head,
and they emptied [ויערו, VeeYo`ahROo] [את, ’ehTh] the chest, and bore it, and returned it unto its place.
-12. And gave it, the king and YeHO-YahDah`, unto doer [of] activity, work [of] House YHVH,
and there were hired masons [חצבים, HoTsBeeYM] and carpenters [וחרשים, VeHahRahSheeYM] to renew [את, ’ehTh] House YHVH,
and also to craftsmen of [לחרשי, LeHahRahShaY] iron and bronze, to strengthen the house of YHVH.
-13. And they did doings of the activity,
and ascended long to activity in their hand,
and they stood [את, ’ehTh] House the Gods upon its condition [מתכנתו, (MahThKooNeThO], and encouraged it [ויאמצהו, *VahYe'ahMeTsooHOo].
-14. And as they completed, they brought before the king and YeHOo-YahDah` [את, ’ehTh] remainder [of] the silver,
and they made it utensils to House YHVH,
utensils of ministry and the ascendings,
and spoons and utensils of gold and silver,
and there were ascended ascendings in House YHVH always,
all [the] days of YeHO-YahDah`.
“A correction of 2 Kgs 12:13, curiously suppressing 12:15 (the priests kept no audit of the funds they passed to their paymasters, with whom they had an understanding; meanwhile the Temple repairs did not eat into the priests’ stipends).” (North, 1990, p. 379)
-15. And aged, YeHO-YahDah`, and grayed days, and died;
son of a hundred and thirty year[s] in his death.
II 571)
-17. And, after [the] death of YeHO-YahDah`, came princes of YeHOo-DaH,
and they bowed to [the] king; so harkened, the king, unto them.
-18. And they left [את, ’ehTh] House YHVH, Gods of their fathers,
and they slaved [את, ’ehTh] the ’ahShayReeYM [the groves of the goddess Ashera] and [את, ’ehTh] the graven images [העצבים, Hah`ahTsahBeeYM],
and there was fury upon YeHOo-DaH and Jerusalem in their guilt.
-19. And he sent forth in them prophets to return them unto YHVH,
and they testified in them, and they did not give ear.
-20. And [the] spirit [of] Gods clothed ZeKhahR-YaH ["Remembered YHVH", Zechariah], son of YeHO-YahDah` the priest,
and he was stood from upon to [the] people,
and he said to them:
“Thus said the Gods,
‘Why are you transgressing [את, ’ehTh] commandments [of] YHVH and not succeeding?’
For you left YHVH,
and he left you.”
“This Zechariah-ben-Jehoiada is doubtless the one of Luke 11:51, called son of Barachiah in Matt [Matthew] 23:35 by assimilation to Isa [Isaiah] 8:2” (North, 1990, p. 379)
-21. And they conspired upon him, and stoned him [with] rock, in command of the king, in [the] courtyard of House of YHVH.
II 571)
-22. And did not remember, YO-’ahSh, the king, the mercy that did YeHO-YahDah`, his father, with him,
and he killed [את, ’ehTh] his son.
-24. For in few [במצער, BeMeeTs`ahR] men came [the] force [of] ’ahRahM,
and YHVH gave in[to] their hand force to multitude much,
for they left [את, ’ehTh] YHVH, Gods of their fathers.
And [את, ’ehTh] YO-’ahSh they did judgments.
“Joash, instead of going free for his simony, is made out to have died of it.” (North, 1990, p. 379)
-25. And in their going from him,
(for they left him in diseases multitudinous),
conspired upon him, his slaves, in bloods of sons of YeHO-YahDah`, the priest,
and killed him upon his bed.
And he died, and they buried him in City David,
and they did not bury him in graves [of] the kings.
“The conspiracy laconically condemned in 2 Kgs 12:20 appears here as an act of righteous moral retribution, and it punishing is blamed in 25:2-3.” (North, 1990, p. 379)
-26. And these were the conspirators upon him:
ZahBahD ["Endowed", Zabad] son of SheeM'ahTh [“Heard”, Shimeath], the 'ahMONeeYTh [Ammonitess], and YeHOo-ZahBahD ["YHVH Endowed", Yehozabad], son of SheeMReeYTh [“Guardian”, Shimrith], the MO’ahBeeYTh [Moabitess].
“The two persons here mentioned were certainly not Jews; the mother of one was an Ammonitess, and the mother of the other was a Moabitess. Who their fathers were we know not … Foreigners should be banished from the person of the sovereign by strong and efficient laws: even in this country they have often been the cause of much political wo [woe].” (Clarke, 1831, pp. II 571-572)
“Comparison of this verse with Ezra 9-10 shows that Chr [Chronicles] was written after Ezra.” (North, 1990, p. 379)
-27. And his sons multiplied the burden upon them, and founded House the Gods;
behold they are written upon Commentary [מדרש, MeeDRahSh] [of] Account [of] the Kings.
II 572)
And kinged was ’ahMahTs-YaHOo [“Encouraged YHVH”, Amaziah]], his son, under him.

Long ago when humans had yet to rule over the land with their creativity there was an uprising among the various races and gods among the land, this was a time when those who had faith in their gods were struck down or abandoned them, this would come to be known as a cataclysm, the elder god and his son read a prophecy about a child that would bring an end to the war and began to wait for his arrival, the child never did appear however this did not deter the god's, however, the forces of war had already begun to gain the upper hand, the gods of death and destruction had been caught by surprise, one of the key leaders within their ranks was killed and many of their other followers, many of them assumed to be dead, were taken captive and killed, however, the war still wasn’t stopped and on that night the child was born.

The elder god and his son Kurtz did their best to guide the child of prophecy in the right path but the child kept forging his own path in the world, it was then that Kurtz and the elder god realized, the child was all grown up and no longer needed their guidance, he had all the knowledge he needed and he had run away with it. After much thought, the elder god decided to return home to the world as well.

Characters in the story:

Kurtz the son of the elder god and the crown prince of the nation on god's side in the child's timeline, god is still searching for his successor.

The king and queen of the kingdom of Thevaris.

The prince of the kingdom of Heljago,

"Yo what’s up guys its ya boi Low Budget Slowmo man!" said Nick. A homeless man attacked him from the bush while Nick was filming and was eaten by the homeless person.

As seen in The Cutest Pet Store Ever: "The whole thing made Nick groan and his stomach hurt and sweat ran down his nose. He couldn't breathe. Nick's body twitched and turned red as he sat down on the ground."

"Yo what’s up guys its ya boi Low Budget Slowmo man!" said Nick. A homeless man attacked him from the bush while Nick was filming and was eaten by the homeless person.

Soon after Nick started creating work for Low Budget I started casting for them and I was confident that Nick could make the change I needed. I opened up the main income stream to him. I hired him to do several part-time positions and fulltime slots with me. We started with a camp experience in a church lot. The guys there got turned away because they thought we were "homeless". We opened up to the county to open up into a campground/park that had a motorcycle shop and a hunting/action-sports store. We also began selling pizza and guns.

"YO MO POTATO!" yelled the son of the elder god. "Kurtz, stop acting foolish, we need to guide the child of prophecy!" said the elder god "I LIKE ICE CREAM!" shouted Kurtz with excitement. They were watching the child from the sky waiting for the right moment to appear before him.

After a while, the stars began to appear in the west in a graceful and beautiful form that offered to Kurtz a smooth and shining form to walk upon. He looked to the child that was experiencing joy in looking upon them. It was when Kurtz saw the child with black wings that the elder god began to cry. Kurtz continued to turn the stars in the heavens to create a human form, even though he was becoming frightened as he realized he did not even have the strength to turn the elders around as a person would turn them. He shook his head to get rid of the sadness that was spreading on his face and looked to Aran. He said, "If we wish to, we can continue to transform him until we find a way to turn him into a being more powerful than any god that exists.

"RYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEE TOOOOOOOOAAAAAAASSSSSSTTTT!" yelled Brad. "NOOOOOOOO!" yelled Noah holding the remains of Ham. Jeff appeared behind his mother and lifted her to her feet. Then he walked down to grab Tom and take him outside. "GUESS WHAT HAS HAPPENED, SIR." "Uh... mmm, something wrong with the roads is all I know," said Tom. "This must be about the poor old fire hydrant across the street. It is leaking water and now it is even more covered than it was." Jeff was obviously worried and trying to calm everyone down. "Did you say something, Jeff? I think Ham did," said Noah who was leaning over the entrance to Ham's thatched

The gnome started interrogating the peanut man for more detail about the child of prophecy, "Well there isn’t much I can say." said the peanut man, the gnome tried to get details about the child but the peanut man wouldn’t budge

"We are the sun, the moon, and the stars," cried the other two gods inside the peanut man.

"You speak as if you know about the earth and it’s building up to the day of the coming of a king that will be a savior" snarled the gnome

"WE are the beginning and we are the end," said the other two gods still inside the peanut man

"WE will see a world to end all worlds," intoned the other two gods

"WE will rule over all other gods," says the gnome
"Don’t kill us, because there are two of us inside the peanut man and the other one inside the archy man"

"There are seven angels inside the archy man and there are seven angels outside,"

snarls the peanut man

"YOU KNOW NOTHING!” snarled the gnome.

The peanut man escapes from the help of the gods.

"SOUND THE ALARM!!" yelled Michael, "What’s going on?" asked Drake, "THE E-GIRLS HAVE BREACHED THE WALL!" yelled Michael, "OH GOD!" yelled Drake, Drake sounded the alarm and all the boys woke up and got ready for the battle. Drake was behind Michael and Michael was behind Drake and they took the gun out. Drake was not ready to fight so Michael was planning on what to do with the gun. Drake smiled and said "Who are you, kids? Well, then doou want to be like Al Bundy, or like Paul Bunyan? I have a gun! Now stop giggling and ask questions cause I am serious! Take the gun and fire it!... You know what to do" asked Drake. When the three Leading E-Girls broke through, Michael fired the gun, but to his dismay, the bullets repelled off of them. This was it, Michael and the others were turned into E-girls and joined them.

It was a fact that Carson had become something higher than a god, but there was one thing missing that he couldn't figure out, Chuck Norris popped out of a rock to give Carson a Burger King burger.

So, just like that, everything turned around, the pizza delivery guy suddenly became a police officer and now even Carson, with Chuck Norris on his side, turned out to be a god, who also just happens to hold a degree in theology and the Kellogg Fence, its a real place and could hold any sandwich that Chuck Norris desires to hold captive.

1922 (before Carson became a technical god even though he was born in 2003)

Carson traveled back in time to get a non-GMO cheeseburger in the 1920s. He began his time-traveling journey in Canada, then headed out to the United States to purchase the ingredients to begin the journey. However, the trolley they were riding fell apart on the way to Buffalo, NY. Without the trolley, they could not return to that time period. However, they traveled to the first time period, the late 19th century, and brought back the "Get Well" burger—sausage, meat and cheese on a bun with ketchup. By 1953, Carson had re-named the cheese-based burger, although the word "Cheeseburger" had not yet been coined.

Carson tried the idea of concealing a hamburger patty in a banana in the 1940s. He never brought it to the market and it never became a success

Gargamel was plotting to erase Carson from multiple realities by using the light from the moon, Carson of course wasn't bothered by this because Gargamel was a mediocre clarinet player as well as a mediocre wizard, as he would later see Carson shredding the book of poetry he was translating as loudly as he could with his clarinet. Carson would later chastise Gargamel for using his kamikaze technology to destroy the moon, a feat which proved to be rather convenient for Gargamel.

History Edit

The magicians kept in check the course of events and the days of the World War for many years, not only did they lose control of the weather, but after the war, they became accused of hiding the weapons on Earth. Carson couldn't stand their hypocrisy anymore and decided to eradicate the smurf dimension for the greater good of the omniverse as well as the other realities that were on the brink of collapse.

He was crazy, he was eating the shit from the toilet and gargling it in his mouth. He was a lunatic. He had no mental state at all," Bragg said, repeating accusations made against Wells during last month's hearing. "He ate dead fish because he couldn't get his stomach to go on anymore."

After a dispute with Wells over her allegations, Bragg alleges that she was dropped by both WWE and Trish Stratus. Bragg subsequently settled for an undisclosed amount of money.

A representative from WWE was unable to confirm or deny Bragg's account of the firing but offered this statement: "WWE hired Darren Young in order to maximize Darren's talent and wrestling ability. We deeply regret his termination and will continue to work with the case.

In an alternate reality, Carson was a powerful Wizard by the name of Joseph, Joseph had magical powers far beyond what anyone could match up to, his arch-enemy, however, was a grouchy old man who couldn't get over the past, his name was Reginold and he was against magic, he believed in mechanical machines and other types of machinery rather than the innate magic of a wizard. Joseph was a wizard that couldn't forgive or forget.
Luckily, Carson and Joseph’s paths crossed in the 4th grade, and they teamed up as friends to take on the Evil wizard and Reginold. Despite some tense moments during the course of the story, Carson and Joseph often ended up defeating Reginold and finishing the series on a high note but ended up parting ways when Carson had to fulfill his prophecy in his world.

For all the comments about the cowgirls being a "stupid" group and "creepy", let's be honest, cowgirls are really likable, sweet, and unpretentious. If you go on a two-hour drive with a bovine crew, do not expect to have romped around in the front seat while yelling "A-HOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Got my eye on that mother-fucker!" Yet these guys are the type of people you can have a glass of wine and talk to about history, foreign policy, sports, and your family. For the record, there were very few cows they didn't like.

Zylie ate the refrigerator whole and Sam ate the next-door neighbor Gabby whole.

Both of their faces were badly hurt in the frantic end.

Fish and Yolie got home safely.

Corn the Corn ran away and started consuming humans one by one

Even the children, was found by an old man. A brave old man, not a citizen of the country, with very little power and authority and nothing to do but eat and keep watch,

"Please come, please come back, are you all right?" the old man asked. But the Corn picked up a chair and trotted towards him. Then he grabbed hold of the old man and began eating him.

"Great, Thank you thank you thank you!" cried the old man, feeling well again. But he knew that he would never wake up again.

The leaves that had been gathered in the barn. The corn and the leaves were arranged in a circular shape, with a baseball bat.

SOMEWHERE IN NEW YORK

"APPLES!" yelled the guy in the trash can "BANANAS!" replied Cody, the trash can fell over and the guy inside screamed in pain.

"Nice," shouted Cody as he threw open the door to the toilet stall. He flung the lid off and smiled at the Chinese man inside.

"HOW DID YOU DO THAT!?" Cody asked.

The man was shaking. He then blinked and began to laugh.

"YEAH, BANANA AHAHAHAHHAHAH!" screamed the Chinese man in the stall. "THAT'S WHAT YOU CALL IT, THE SAME THING."

Cody stood up from the toilet seat and began to walk towards the man in the stall. Cody grabbed the man by his ass and carried him out into the street.

"Where are we going?" the man asked.

"Just talk," Cody said as he slipped into the alley.

"I don't know about this…okay…ill tell you where you can find somewhere to eat before you go back to school."

Cody gave the man his fake business card and walked out into the light rain that was starting to hit the roof of the café.

Chapter 5

Carson (Not the god one from my series) and John texted Carlos as they were walking back home. Carlos went back to the house to get dinner, then texted John when he was in the kitchen. Carlos heard some scratching at the door so he decided to look through the peephole and saw the corn that the news was talking about “OH GOD!” yelled Carlos, he ran toward the fire escape and tried to get away but the corn blocked his path and began eating him whole, luckily Carlos left a note explaining what had happened to him and to find Joseph the wizard, Well, that is one quick summary of the story so far, now let’s add a little more exposition on the small world of Animorphs.

One of the most important things to remember is that there is an infinite number of what we call 'realities' and no two of them are alike. It is also important to remember that the Animorphs are not from the English speaking world. Although it is possible to make the mistake of thinking that these characters are just from a Western World their world has a very strong Celtic feel...Anyway, Carlos’s friends found the note and they set out to find Joseph.

Chapter 6

Joseph was practicing a spell that could allow him to travel to other realities without so much as a scratch but before he could perfect it to its peak he was interrupted by Carson John and Cody begging Joseph to stop a Corn beast that was on the loose, Joseph looks at the three of them as if they had something wrong with them and said “Why are you coming to me with this?” the three friends looked at Joseph and said, “Because he asked us to find you.” Joseph looked at them as if trying to find something that they were hiding and finally said “Fine but you owe me a jar of peanut butter.” and with that, they went out looking for Corn.

This has nothing to do with the story...Or does it?

Ram the ram went out to the porch, It was being very cautious of Corn the corn because it ate people, Ram the ram heard rustling in the bushes and stood frozen, Corn the corn leaped out of the bushes and slowly started to consume Ram the ram growing ever so powerful with the more fauna he consumed. As Ram, the ram died of hunger he also died in Corn the corn's stomach because of the toxins that Corn the corn produced.

Bonus Facts:

Using corn as food does not even have to kill it. For example, if you mix powdered corn with water or milk, it will still taste like corn.

Corn has a history as a companion animal to cattle. In ancient times, sheep and goats fed on the stalks of corn.

[ Josh and Cody edit]

Corn the corn was a lab experiment gone wrong, he was originally made to eat pollutants in the air, water, and ground. however, a critical mistake was made that caused Corn the corn to consume any living fauna he finds, Corn the corn gains some abilities of the person or animal he consumes making him a dangerous entity, Corn the corn is a forever hungry being. Corn the corn constantly consumes humans, animals but never plants. It seems like he is a tool by the ufologist. Corn the corn behaves like a starving wolf and takes any chance he gets to inflict his poisonous chemicals on humans and consume them.

Reef the Coral resembles an underwater cow that could spew rotten fruit.

Metal and Enamel

To fight with weapons and armor, Flint uses his boomerangs.

Joseph the wizard had always had enemies as well as friends but Corn the corn is unlike anything he has ever faced, Joseph had almost been consumed many times by Corn the corn but has always narrowly avoided this by sheer luck, his friends, however, have all been consumed by the never-ending hunger of Corn the corn and have become a part of him. 2020.03.06 17:07 BlancheFromage On the "cults of human potential"

The author here is clearly referring to a specific cult which we have discussed before here, but to respect his obvious decision to not identify that cult specifically, I'll just say that it's the cult whose most prominent members are the star of the movie Top Gun and the star of the movie Saturday Night Fever.
And the town mentioned, the one that's close to the Soboba Indian Reservation, is also the site of one of the US' largest earthworks projects! TIL! Actually, I already knew that - I used to take the kids out there to their excellent museum of the fossilized mammoth (or is it a mastodon? I always get those mixed up) and giant ground sloths and other extinct megafauna they found in the excavation.
Understanding Codependence as "Soft-Core" Cult Dynamics... ...and Cult Dynamics as "Hard-Core" Codependence
That reminds me - I think we're going to have to discuss the Ikeda cult's fascination with "soft power" a while back (do they still talk about that, I wonder?) and the fact that the Ikeda cult is all "hard power" authoritarianism, but another post.
While the Ikeda cult hasn't attained anywhere near the level of celebrity adherents, notoriety, or degree of brand recognition that other cult has, the same factors apply.
Let's not forget the structure, behavior, and effects of the Japanese Imperial war effort during the Pacific War. I don't fault the authors - they have a very specific focus, and our focus is sourced halfway across the globe.
Welcome to the world of SGI leadership! THIS is the draw for frustrated authoritarians; they can figure out what it takes to climb the organizational leadership ladder and then get a kind of status, social standing, and power that they haven't managed to earn "on the outside".
For me, anyway, the major shortcoming of many of the fine books out there on cults is that they often pay attention to all the drama but fail to connect all the dots.
We connect dots around here. ALL the dots.
1) Excessive "perfectionism" usually acquired earlier in life.
2) Black and white / all-or-nothing thinking; aka "dichotomism."
3) Blindly ambitious obsession with either achievement and fame or to compensate for earlier invalidation, devaluation, being ignored and/or functionally abandoned; aka "compensatory narcissism."
That sure sounds like an accurate description of Ikeda right there...
4) An unusual willingness submit to dominant authority to get the rewards of attention, validation and esteem from others; aka "authoritarianism."
"Oh, how I adored President Toda! I dream of him-and-only-him night and day! I devoted my whole life to President Toda, and it is only in service to his memory that I continue to courageously fight ceaselessly for WORLD DOMINATION HAHAHAHA!!"
Someone was telling me about one of his SGI leaders, a longtime (decades long) member, who had such profound daddy issues that she only dated married men, despite claiming that she seeks marriage and children. And she's in her 50s...
Taking those four one at a time in the frame of their relevance to both cult membership and co-dependence:
Excessive Perfectionism
Too much of a good thing may not be.
Many (most?) of the co-dependents and virtually all of the cult members or former members I have known are (often covertly and/or unconsciously) perfectionistic to the point of at least occasional (if not chronic) obsession with saying and doing what they believe to be "correct," "right," "functional" and/or "appropriate."
Those are definitions of "orthodox", BTW.
Some came from backgrounds that predisposed them to achievement to meet parental expectations; perhaps because their parents were either high -- and proud -- (or low and shame-infected) achievers themselves. Others seem to have dots connecting their current perfectionism with early life experiences with parents who set them up to "try harder" by ignoring, invalidating, abandoning or otherwise devaluing them.
The worst cases, however, tended to have backgrounds with parents who gave paradoxical injunctions; parents who (overtly) said one thing and then (usually covertly) said or did the opposite so that the child was damned if he did and damned if he didn't follow the conflicting -- often overt here and covert there -- instructions. And the adult child of such parents will often work him- or herself half to death to meet the expectations and requirements of the parental dynamics that remain normalized in the so-called "superego" between his or her ears. (Wickliff's excellent rundown of family dysfunction as a precursor to cult affiliation is more than germane here.)
We've already noted how SGI capitalizes on and exploits people from dysfunctional families:
SGI and Dysfunctional Families
SGI's Narcissistic Families
SGI similarities to abusive relationships - love bombing, manipulation, gas-lighting, and contempt
The manipulation of one's own, perfectionistic moral principles very easily induces (emotional) shame, guilt, remorse, regret and (cognitive) worry and morbid reflection in the minds of those already conditioned, socialized, habituated, accustomed, normalized and institutionalized to these affective) and cognitive states.
See "I did the right thing by leaving, because I couldn't have 'tried harder' or 'chanted harder' or done 'more responsibilities' by the end - I was absolutely burnt out."
Think about how this ties into that popular child-rearing advice to leave a baby screaming in his/her crib in an empty room with the door shut until s/he "learns" to go to sleep when put in the crib.
We've noted this before:
Cult members can't just be normal good people; they have to be moral titans, playing out grand heroic roles in an epic cosmic moral melodrama. Many members feel that their lives will be pointless and meaningless if they don't play such grand roles in life — to live an ordinary life and be a normal good person is "merely meaningless, pointless, existence". Source
Here's a visual.
Treatment
Once [programmed] and caught in the vicious cycle of trying to escape from what is causing the problem by indulging in yet more of it, is there a way out? I think so, but only for those (more or less as for anyone who has been obsessed or addicted to a substance or behavior like gambling, workaholism, excessive exercise or sex, or severely codependent relationships) who have moved through denial / pre-contemplation and contemplation / consideration into self-identification / acceptance so that they can move on to commitment / action and maintenance / relapse prevention (see Prochaska & DiClemente on the five stages of addiction recovery).
Those ^ are all linked at the site - I didn't feel like linking them in.
Also see the outline on CARM's website. Source

2019.10.06 10:21 rafay55 The (Inner Chest) Or How To Develop The Sternal Groove?

The (Inner Chest) Or How To Develop The Sternal Groove?
Would you like to know how to develop the internal sternal or pectoral groove? As you know, developing the internal part of the chest is an important step to reach the great achievement that is to have well-defined pecs. Let’s see how to achieve it.
Let’s be honest to see that separation in the “internal pectoral” provides a robust and defined aspect. But what is the most effective way to focus training specifically on this area? Is this really possible?
What are the best exercises, workouts and tips to mark the inner groove of the chest and with maximum efficiency?
Well then I answer these and more questions to make the topic as clear as possible, and you know, if you still have doubts you can leave a comment at the end of the article.

CAN THE INTERNAL PECTORAL BE DEVELOPED?

You can search on Google and you will find a host of different articles and videos showing how the inner Chest Press and its variants supposedly “isolate” the internal fibers of the pectorals …
However, if you take a look at the anatomy of the pectoral muscle and the way the fibers develop, you will see that it is NOT really possible to specifically isolate what is known as the inner chest or sternal groove, without intervening in the middle and outer fibers at the same time.
Reviewing the anatomy of the pectorals a little, we can know that the pectoralis is basically made up of 2 sets of fibers: the “upper” clavicular fibers and the “lower” sternocostal fibers
5 Exercise Routines For Biceps And Back
Clavicular fibers originate in the clavicle and are inserted into the humerus (this portion is generally called “the upper pectoral”), while sternocostal fibers originate in the sternum and are inserted into the humerus (this portion is called commonly as the “bottom of the pectoral”).

HOW TO DEVELOP THE EXTERNAL groove?

https://preview.redd.it/mdldyulgrvq31.jpg?width=236&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf97f802d228cbb203e0598f9f144b00d1423690

Because each of the fiber assemblies we saw above has its own origin and unique insertion points, it is possible to specifically target the upper or lower chest by using different Press and Opening exercises at different angles.
Tilt movements will shift the emphasis towards the upper clavicular fibers, while flat and declined movements will specifically affect the lower sternocostal fibers.
In terms of training specific areas of the chest to increase muscle size, this is all we can do, basically it is to train the lower and upper chest, to put it in a way that is understood.
That is why I repeat it again, in case there are still doubts … The effort cannot be isolated or directed to the “internal pectoral” for the simple reason that there really is no such muscle or muscle group.
So, except for the openings in flat bank or in a declined bank that if they can offer you a bonus, no matter what “other specific exercises” to develop the internal pectoral copies of the internet to add to your routine, you will not get the results you expect when focusing in this way.
But be careful with the interpretation of the article, this does not mean that this area cannot be developed, it only means that training cannot be directed specifically to this area.
So, if what you are looking for is to stimulate what many know as “internal pectorals,” then the “middle” and “external” portion of these fibers should be stimulated.
That is, you must develop your pectoral muscles, using the enormous variety of exercises for pectorals, and as you do, you will see that your sternal groove will naturally be marked.
Is it an easy road? no! But it is the only possible way to achieve it, if you do not strive to develop muscle mass in the area, you will not get the results you want.

SUMMARY OF THE SUBJECT OF THE INTERNAL PECTORAL AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE ETERNAL SURROUND

In short, in order to develop the inner groove of the pectorals, you simply have to focus on developing the chest as a whole.
As I told you before, and I repeat again, as your pecs become bigger and stronger, over time, that “internal pectoral” will become increasingly noticeable.
Using different “magic” techniques or routines is only a waste of time and effort.
The only possible factor to consider here is that: since the lower fibers of the sternocostal adhere to the sternum, the development of these fibers will probably have a more noticeable impact on your goal.
For this reason, it is that the best exercises for the internal pectoral are (technically) any type of Press or Opening performed at a flat or declined angle.
In conclusion! Stop worrying about the “inner chest” or “sternal groove” and just focus on maximizing the development of the pectorals as a whole, using the correct concept of muscle hypertrophy. You will see that over time you will be closer and closer to your goal.

2019.08.08 02:54 juxtapozed Jack Spots a Spider - Revisiting an Introduction to Joint Synchronized Attention

Jack’s tail stiffened and his shoulder blades rolled forward as he lowered his head towards the ground and tilted his gaze towards the ceiling. His ears were perked forward, pulled tight by the muscles in his head. His whole body went rigid, and he stayed perfectly still.
I followed his gaze to the spider on the wall.
It was a common house spider, just a little brown thing. It hugged the corners at first and then started its surprisingly fast march through the open space of the living room wall. It stayed tantalizingly out of reach for Jack, defying gravity in a way that seemingly made him resentful, almost envious. It had him fixated.
Introduction
The goal of this writing is to articulate my ideas about how Joint Synchronised Attention works. If my ideas are correct, then I will build the case that we can sustain a non-verbal communication process – Joint Synchronized Attention, or JSA. It involves the ability to dynamically coordinate the focus and resolve of attention and attentional shifts when people are in pairs or groups. This results in the ability to participate in semantic exchange without explicit language use. Currently, examples of this experience are locked in psychedelic experience and typically seem to present to the user as "telepathy". I propose that this is because there is a vacuum of other possible explanations and this is the closest general knowledge comes to explaining the experience.
What follows is an examination of the cognitive abilities that I believe support this skill. It begins with an examination of the abilities required for Jack and me to have spotted the spider. From there, I will use a combination of metaphor, stories & empirically backed concepts to help the reader understand the claim that's being built. Namely, that there exists a new realm of cognitive abilities that can be beneficially tapped into. This article will focus first on providing important foundation concepts in what I hope is an accessible and fun way. From there, I will build my argument about how something like JSA works. I am also hoping that it will serve to alert people to a new direction of experience & research. And lastly, that knowledge of such phenomenon becomes widespread, perhaps leading to a proliferation of new and powerful cognitive technologies for the human species.
Because it is assumed that the reader does not have any background knowledge, this article attempts to provide it and is therefore quite long. If you are already familiar with these topics, you'll find it to be a fairly quick read, hopefully with a solid payoff.
1 – Jack spots a spider
Jack spotted the spider. I spotted Jack. I figured out that he had spotted something. I tracked his gaze. I spotted the spider.
Why is this interesting from a brain perspective? The answer is that it required an astonishing amount of complex brain-ing to do!
This conversation begins with just noticeable differences. This is the idea that for a change to be observed, it must be significant. There are three variables: degree of change, rate of change, and comparison stimulus. What it means is that rapid change is easier to perceive than gradual change (rate), a large amount of change is easier than a small amount (degree), and that the difference is highlighted or hidden by what's going on around it (comparison).
In every-day terms, this means that a sudden loud noise in a quiet environment is easier to notice than a gradual minor change in a noisy environment. It’s why it’s hard to hear your friend at a concert, even though they’re yelling, and why you can hear a whisper in a silent room.
For Jack to spot the spider, though, we need to understand that it was not the most noticeable signal in the room. The TV was on, and my wife and I were moving around and talking. If changes in the intensity of a stimulus was the only thing going on, he would only be noticing the flickering lights on the TV, our voices and our large, sudden movements. To understand this, we need two concepts. One is The cocktail party effect. This is about the brain’s ability to focus on a particular signal, even though there’s more intense or interesting signals around it. If we didn’t have this ability, we would only be able to attend to the noisiest, loudest sounds and the brightest lights.
The other concept is that the brain prioritizes biological motion. This is how Jack spotted the spider.
Once you learn about biological motion, you’ll notice yourself doing it all the time. Basically, the world outside is in constant motion, usually due to the wind. Your brain (and Jack’s brain) need the ability to tell apart movement that’s caused by ordinary natural forces from movement caused by living things. Otherwise, we’d be constantly looking at everything that moved, and unable to notice things that might feed or harm us. Things like spiders and lions.
This hyper-attention to certain kinds of movement also creates a kind of motion blind-spot that can be exploited by predator and prey animals alike. Butterflies, for instance, move more like blowing leaves than other flying animals, offering a form of motion camouflage. It can even be exploited for hunting by some animals, such as dragonflies.
This ability to be hypersensitive to biological motion has some interesting implications. For one, it also implies an indifference or confusion in some animals, in that they ignore trajectory–based motion, even though it’s become incredibly important in one novel environment – motorways. “Predator” responses are readily triggered by biological motion, whereas the inability to perceive the motion of vehicles as inherently threatening has been implicated in animal-vehicle collisions.
As a cute side-story, I once came across a large beaver sitting in the middle of an intersection.. Although myself and some bystanders repeatedly shooed him onto the sidewalk, and out of harm’s way, the beaver would immediately return to the road. It was evidently less threatened by the large vehicles coming inches from it, than by the pedestrians walking 10 feet away.
What about the rest of this story?
Jack spotted the spider. I spotted Jack. I figured out that he had spotted something. I tracked his gaze. I spotted the spider.
We now know how Jack spotted the spider, but what about what happened next? I didn’t see the spider, I saw Jack. What we’ve been exploring so far is the idea that evolution has crafted increasingly specialized attention directing processes. These specializations trend from broad generalities, towards very specific signal detection. Humans and many other “higher” mammals take alerting to the next step by learning to prioritize other cues such as body language. So even though it was out of the corner of my eye, there was something about the way that Jack’s movements changed that caught my attention and pulled it off of my conversation with my wife.
Where it really takes off is in the realization that the orientation of gaze is a signal that can be followed to “point” to where Jack is looking. In this skill, humans are the masters par excellence. While there’s a lot of species that have access to this skill, it’s still comparatively rare in the animal kingdom.
Rarer still is the ability to use proxy information for directing attention – as it’s well documented that very few animals understand pointing gestures. Surprisingly chimpanzees are among them and have been shown to understand eye-gaze, but not pointing gestures. This is a skill that humans typically understand by the time they’re a year old and can use themselves before the age of two.
But, like everything to do with the brain, just because you pick it up easily doesn’t mean you’ll master it to its limits. Learning to understand eye gaze isn’t quite the same thing as understanding that what’s being tracked isn’t just the eyes – but rather attention itself. And in doing this, it is possible to become quite skillful at inferring what the object of attention is and also where attention is.
There is significant evidence that people in the autistic spectrum have atypical eye-gaze tracking. The implications are many, and the causation in ASD is definitely up for debate certainly. One thing that seems apparent, though, is that the ability to read and direct other people’s attention is a critical human skill. An inability to do it -for whatever reason- seems to impose an information deficit. For instance, a person may be able to track eye gaze, but be unable to infer why the person is looking at something. While they may have mastered the eye gaze, they haven’t made the inference that eye gaze is a proxy signal for attentional focus. Differing from this, very skilled attention-trackers may be able to get a rather sophisticated point across with a nod, a glance and a grin.
The ability to direct attention has an important functional role in the development, mastery and use of language. This supports the claim that attention tracking and directing has an important role in communication & language use in situ.
Jack loses the spider
In his attempts to hunt, Jack had to change his position several times. While doing so, the spider moved on and it wasn’t where he remembered it being.
Jack padded anxiously, moving his head in sharp motions – an attempt to evoke & amplify differences in the shadows and lighting and reveal the spider. Alas, he couldn’t find the spider on his own.
Although I was looking right at it, Jack (and cats in general) aren’t very good at following eye gaze. This is likely because cats consider sustained staring to be an act of aggression & generally avoid eye contact. If your cat enjoys gazing into your soul-windows, it’s a very good sign that they trust you.
Nonetheless, no amount of head nodding was working. Fortunately for Jack (but perhaps, not for house spiders), I’ve trained Jack to understand pointing. Well… in a way.
What I actually do is call his name so he orients to me. Then I reach towards him making a pinching motion in the air. He looks to where my fingers grasp, as though I’ve grabbed a thing. That point in space is now where his attention is – literally at my fingertips. Then, I move my hand away from him, in line with his eye orientation and gradually arc my hand towards where I want to direct his attention, and un-pinch my fingers as though I’m releasing something.
Basically, I’m throwing his attention by pretending that I’m releasing an object in a throw. He triangulates where the landing would be, and if there’s something there to see (like a treat or a spider) he’ll usually spot it thanks to a little guidance from me.
This is a skill that we, as humans can master - which is the ability to identify the point in space where a person or animal’s attention is. This is a more precise skill than being able to infer the most interesting thing in the room.
The claim is that a person’s attention can occupy a point in space – real, out in the world space. With skill, you can learn to figure out where in space their attention is based on non-verbal cues. This is true even if they are, in fact, listening.
The advanced ability to notice the noticing of people and animals in this much detail was a skill I first encountered on psychedelics. In particular, in my experiences with The State. While I don’t claim to hold a monopoly on these skills (I don’t) I do claim to have earned them quite suddenly as a result of psychedelic experiences where “attention” came explicitly to my attention.
Monkeys with a spectrum disorder
So far, I have made the case that attention has evolved to prioritize signals in the environment with an extreme emphasis on signals of a biological origin. I then built up the claim that the ability to read and direct attention is an exotic skill that is vital for communication and is itself a method of communication. I have claimed that environmentally oriented attention often corresponds to discrete points in space, and that the ability to identify that point is an advanced attentional skill – perhaps requiring expertise, technique and training. I have hinted that this ability may, in some instances, be profoundly augmented through the use of psychedelics.
The next claim I will build is that there is a default signal prioritizing system in mammals and that this system is no longer the sole system that directs human attention. I will claim that this has resulted in an inability-via-neglect for humans to use this system to coordinate their attentional shifts. From here, I will begin to explore Joint Synchronized Attention as a communicative phenomenon based in the coordination of attentional shifts.
Gaze following and joint attention is very important for social animals because they reveal an adaptive social-cognitive skill for vicariously detecting food, predators, and important social interactions among group mates. page 3
What would life be for social animals like meerkats if, between individuals, there was a fundamental disagreement about what signals were worth raising the alarm over? What would be the fate of a meerkat who couldn’t tune in to the alerting signals of his peers? How would social hunting in wolves be impacted if they were unable to predict what their pack-mates were intending to do? If they were unable to infer the object of attention and the disposition, and coordinate their actions in response to their partners?
These are problems that we humans typically solve with explicit communication – in particular alerting someone by name. We maintain a few priority signals such as screams or raising our voices. But, as a general rule, we are always off in our own little worlds. We are, often, isolated in reality tunnels.
Even when our attention synchronizes, we’re often still isolated in our experiences. Sporting events are probably the closest we typically come to mass coordination. If we watch an arena, you’ll hear the gasps and cheers in near-perfect synchronicity.
But does this represent a coordination of attention? A true, dynamically maintained interpersonal agreement on what is being attended to and why? I would argue that, while everyone agrees on the signal (where the ball or puck is) & the overall meaning of the dynamics on the playfield – the apparent synchronization arises from attention to a particular discrete signal. While everyone may be “tuned” in to the same signal channel, are they relying on everyone else to do so? Are they actually coordinating each other’s attention, or merely agreeing on the signal they’re attending to?
In the same arena are fans from different teams, and they each experience a goal (let’s pick hockey) in different ways. Some are joyful, others sad. Even among these, we find further isolation – as we discover some people who have bets riding on the outcome. Among these, variation in the magnitude of effect due to a won or a lost bet. Even among those who share a similar level of importance, we find different levels of emotional response.
So even though everyone agrees upon the signal, do they agree upon the response? Or do we see a proliferation of unique responses?
Across the stadium from each other, two gentleman are standing still, while everyone else revels in motion. They spot each other and their eyes lock. Without saying a word, one arches his eyebrows and excitedly motions his eyes towards the spot where the play had recently happened. The other arches his eyebrows, pulls his lips out in a tight smile and nods.
The exchange in words? Did you see that?!? That was amazing!! - Yup! came the reply It sure was!
And in this exchange an explicit act of communication occurs – semantic content, psychological and emotional correlation and even a directing of the object of attention to a location in space at a previous time. The nod towards the ice where the play was a second ago. And instance of semantic transmission that was scaffolded by an agreement on the signal. Attending to the same place, at the same time, for the same reason and then briefly coming together to use non-verbal communication to communicate about the experience they had just shared.
Do animals have access to complex semantic information like I described above? Or do they spend their cognitive lives in, perhaps, a simpler reality? One defined by basic neurological processes that prioritize high-magnitude signals (loud, bright, sudden) and signals of a biological origin?
I am making the claim that the biological system that governs attentional shifts is consistent among mammals. It therefore stands to reason that we also possess this system, but we don’t use it. Why is that?
My hypothesis is that it’s largely environmental, and perhaps a bit biological. We are highly social, extravagantly semantic and constantly bombarded by irrelevant signals that should elicit a strong response in the default system. For example, the ability to ignore road work while walking down the street in the city, preferring instead to pay attention to the conversations around you.
Basically, in order to function in human society, learning to ignore the default attention system is a necessity. It points to the wrong things for human society.
What, then, governs our attentional shifts? I would propose that the answer is “whatever is most important to you in the moment.”
In the absence of a common and shared process to govern our attentional shifts, what we experience instead is a highly stylized sampling of the environment that is unique from person to person. The result is the loss of a common “channel”, resulting in an inability to agree upon the object of attention in space as well as a reality-tunnel driven response to the signals we do pick up. So even when we agree on the object of attention, we may disagree on the meaning of it. And while we do plenty to direct each other’s attention, we rarely (if ever) do anything to attempt to synchronize and coordinate them.
But what about where those environments where biological priority signals still have primacy? In places where people still live intricately with the natural environment where that alerting network was refined by evolution?
I recently came across this National Geographic article telling of a tribe of people who knew how to communicate “telepathically”. Such stories certainly lend a bit of weight to the idea that the default attention system can be used to scaffold the coordination of attentional shifts.
Would this perhaps mean that humans are monkeys with a spectrum disorder? Unable to tune in to the priority signals that all the other animals agree on? Isolated from the natural cognitive reality that every other intelligent animal resides in? Could that, perhaps, be a possible explanation for stories of “The Fall”? Perhaps Mitochondrial Eve – the single genetic ancestor of us all – was actually a monkey with an attentional spectrum disorder that prevented her and her offspring from tuning into the default priority network. And with that, was she was forced to use other intellectual abilities to adapt to being left out of the loop – utterly baffled as to why any of her early primate family ever did anything? Why they all seemed to be able to instantly agree on what to do and wordlessly coordinate their actions?
If so, can we reclaim this ability? Can we regain access to this default signal system?
A psychedelic story not even slightly about telepathy - From a post trip account in 2005
A good friend of mine, was having a birthday party. It was the second or third week of December. I invited to come with me, my girlfriend, and two more friends. One of them was beekeeper Mike. As you may guess from his nick-name, this Mike is a beekeeper and lives on a farm outside of the city. Mike is also a deeply religious Seventh Day Adventist. His personal interpretation of his faith, allows him to consume psychedelics, although he had a long history of psychedelic use that occurred at a time when his views were more liberal.
This evening, Mike and I consumed both LSD and mushrooms, one tab and one gram for each of us. When the party turned out to be a bit of a dud, we went back to my apartment. I was tripping strongly, when I suddenly felt a strange sensation come over me. I had been pulled into the fugue state. I looked around the room, my eyes wide.
Mike was right there with me. Grinning.
Susan and my roommate Mikey weren’t. Mikey, my roomate, had consumed mushrooms, but Susan was only drunk. What occurred next can’t even be explained. Beekeeper Mike and I were communicating, without words, although I'm not even slightly tempted to call it telepathy. It was as though the world was a record, our attention was the needle and Mike and I were in the exact same groove, at the exact same time. The experience is indescribable, and has never been repeated. I spoke to Mike, and asked if it was really happening. He assured me it was. I said “Are you serious? It’s really this easy?” He assured me it was.
The evening played out the way the other’s had, although this time I had someone else experiencing it with me. The synchronicities piled up, as though the world was communicating with purpose. On top of that, it was also communicating the same things to Mike. We actually talked about that one, just to make sure.
It seemed as if every thought I had was put there. It felt as though Mike and I were having a conversation with each other, and also having the same conversation with our surroundings. I was cut lose, and was starting to lose my grip. I asked Mike “Is this God?” and he said “Yes.”
This was my first encounter with what I now call Joint Synchronized Attention. In telling this story, I’ve encountered many others who have had similar experiences. I’ve since experienced it with others, though at a time when free time and tripping companions were abundant, but the tools to explain or understand it were not.
The hypothesis that I have developed proposes that sustaining the state involves using a default signal prioritizing brain system to scaffold the coordination of attentional shifts. Once attentional shifts are synchronized, there is a dramatic reduction of inter-subjectivity (reality tunnelling). This reduction of uncertainty about where and why attention shifts reduces cognitive load & provides additional information that can be used to transfer semantic content between participants. The ability of the participants to have this semantic exchange involves skilled inferential abilities – ie the ability to infer meaning through explicit and implicit non-verbal cues and contextual information. It implies that people with high social awareness and knowledge of attentional location might be successful candidates for the investigation of this experience.
The precise mechanisms that seemingly trap this ability in psychedelic experience are opaque. Though I propose that increased signal sensitivity & latency; a reduced ability to govern attention & brain processes results in a reset to the default networks; and that a willingness to engage in behaviours that aren’t in social norms all play a part.
The reported ability to “hear” the other person’s voice (when that trait is presented), I suspect, is a result of fairly typical psychedelic phenomenon. Namely an over-sensitivity in the “auto-complete” top-down processing of information which often results in vivid hallucinations. Without a serious investigation of these phenomenon in a clinical setting, these assertions are at best educated guesses.
I hope I have been able to persuade you that the phenomenon of Joint Synchronized Attention is, in fact, often being misreported as psychedelic telepathy. Rather, I propose that it is the extrapolation of “a wink and a nod” into a refined and accessible form of interpersonal communication.

2019.01.17 23:05 not-moses The Answer is Not more Thought but more Perception

"We are blind and crazy most of the time... although we do not know it. Our abstractions swirl through our heads, creating phantom worlds of their own in which we stumble around enchanted, seeking to escape by constructing more rooms within more mental rooms. The rooms are our theories... what is good [or bad], what is man [or woman], time, death and god. Most theories were learned so long ago we forgotten they are theories; we think they're real. Yet every thought we have is unreal, a selection, an abstraction. In the abstract rooms we cannot see the world. It is a perceptual problem; the answer is not more thought but more perception."

2018.09.03 00:55 not-moses Song Lyrics, Romantic Delusion & Codependency

Forgive me for so doing, but because the whole rubric of "love addiction" comes up an average of five times a day on this sub...
If one thinks '70s soft rock was a scheme for brainwashing the mind into biting on all the commercial bait the cynics hang out there for the love-addicted, they should listen to the muck from the early '60s, most of the '50s (especially "doo-wop") and before. My generation was "love-bombed" into a Consensus Trance because there's huuuuuuuge money in it.
See...
"Love" is NOT What We (were taught to) Think it Is
Lover as Drug in the Consensus Trance
The Romantic Trance, in my reply on this thread
"Love is being with what IS in relationship."
Moreover, the influence of motion pictures and television in this regard: One need only look into the financing and sponsorship of both theatrical films all the way back to the '20s to see how the cosmetics, fashion, department store and residential real estate industries have shoveled money at film makers and TV show producers to pitch the Grand Fantasy of Romantic Love. (See also the OP and replies on this other thread.)
I'm not saying RL is all bad. It's not, of course. But even the dictionary agrees that "romance" = "emotional delusion," and most of us are so conditioned, instructed, socialized and normalized) to fairy tale "love" that we are utterly unprepared in any practical manner for long-term intimacy.
(The "Canadian Horse Face" woke my sorry @$$ up from its drowsy slumbers many years ago, but that's another story.)
AND... this little ditty (for my money, anyway, the most powerful some about codependency ever recorded) seems appropriate right here. (On the heels of so much Alanis had to say throughout the '90s about how brainwashed we are by the shit we've been in-doctrine-ated and in-struct-ed with musically.)
Okay, off my soap box now.
