The water ends at an invisible barrier and the current tugs us along it. A word comes to us âwindow. There are windows on one... two, three, four sides, out of⌠six. We're in a... tank.
The words seem strange. The idea of a word itself seems strange â an alien concept describing an alien concept. We don't feel right.Sensations and awareness flood into us, fill us, threatening to overwhelm us. Weâre aware that weâre aware.Andthereâs something else to worry about too âbeyond the water, beyond thewindows, another alien phenomenon,thatwe somehowunderstandwe shouldfear:
Fire.
The light around us changes rhythmically; it has a quality unfamiliar to us, then doesnât, has thatquality, thendoesnâtâ over and over. The quality is a colour â red. We donâtknow ifweâve ever seen a colour like this before, yet somehow we know what weâre looking at. A loud tone sounds in time with the rhythm, demanding attention. Something falls from above, hitting the tank and causing jagged cracks to shear across our view of the flames beyond. Bright dots â sparks â spray into the air. They are yellow.

We follow the cracks downward,finding where the light the window transmits is most disjointed. Then we swarm either side of the crack, and pull.The crack widens andwater beginsspewing faster out onto featureless ground â a floor â beyond. We stretch, compress, squeeze, expand â flowing one arm at a time through theopening,in mimicry of the water itself, onto the floor. We relish this small challenge and splash triumphantly whenall of us have escaped the tank. On this side there is air. It tastes unusual, and yet, of nothing.
There is no sea in this air. There is nothing of anything.
More sparks hiss and shower, andnewlights begin to flash. The new lights are also red but are accompanied by a tone of a different frequency. How many sources of alarm must we wake to?

Yes, the noises do signify alarm â they are alarms. There is an elegance in these ideas, or maybe a logic. But what is logic? And from where did it come?
As we struggle to understand how it is that we seem to understand, part ofawall ahead moves. It begins folding down towards us, a giant limb of unnatural construction, jointed like a crawlerrather thana swimmer. Now a new sound arises, complex yet coherent. It make new words, but these aren't in ourmind. Thesewordsare in the air itself.
'Warning. Containment failure. Subject escaping. Recapture protocols initiated.'
We know what the words mean, but we don't have time to consider the abstract conceptsthey imply. The construction, a mechanical device of some sort, lunges towards us. Weyank ourselvesaside and it snaps closed where we were, reorients and comes at us again. It's fast, and our body seems slow, unfamiliar in all its responses. This time the thing snares us by one limb, raising us up off the floor. We flail around, curling around the thing's jaws, trying to wrench them apart. Two of our arms strain at our attacker, but make no difference to our attempts to escape... nor do three, nor four... but when our fifth limb â the second on our left â curls around the device, it only has to flex once and our captor snaps apart,sending usto the floor with a wet slap.
Ourbrokenattackerjerks uselessly overhead as westudyour own victorious arm.It's only slightly larger than our others, but clearly much more mighty.
But there isn't time to wonder at our body for long. The floor is vibrating strangely under us, the fire spreading, the air filling with dark, particulate matter. Smoke. The wall to our left looks different, functional. It's a solid plane, designed to be passed through. A door. This makes no sense to us â whyblock passage withadoor, ifa doorâsfunction is to allow passage?
There's something on the wall beside it â a control panel. We slipacross the floor to it, wondering again how we know all this. While most of us flail at the panel, wondering how touseit, one arm â the oneimmediately opposite the mighty one â unerringly pokes ataglyph on the panel,andthe door slides open with asoft noise.
'Good job, p...' we begin.
But this stuns us into silence.
Words.
But this time words we are emitting ourself, forced out with air, pushed out of the siphon we use to pump water. Wecan pumpwords into the very air...
We can talk.
But this is something we'll have to wonder about later, along with how we know what it means to do a good job. For now there's fire and alarms to worry about. We slip through the door, only to be confronted with more mysteries â for in the next room there is another tank.
'Another tank,' we say. 'Another tank another tank another tank another tank.'

Thistankis more severely damaged than the one in which we awoke. The glass is shattered and the floor more deeply flooded, and amongst the shattered fragments lies a creature we recognise. It's a dolphin. We don't think we ever called it a 'dolphin' before, but that's what it is. It's clearly dead, or unconscious, so we leave it and move on through the next door, using our pokey limb to access the controls again.
In the chamber beyond we discover ashark, floating belly-up in a more intact tank.
The rooms, we realise, are small self-contained chambers, each containing a single occupant. When we reach the next chamber we discover that not all of these occupants are aquatic â there is a four-limbed creature there that we somehowidentify asa boar, and its tank is filled with a liquid more viscous than water. The boar's belly moves slowly as we watch, rising and falling. It is suspended with cables and wires. We think of releasing it, but then wonder what purpose that would serve. We can't eat it, juggle it or carry it, and it is clearly not awake.
We move on, slithering rapidly to the next door. The chamber beyond has a spider monkey in it, and the one beyond that a capybara. Then there is a jaguar, and then a human. The human's chamber is different to the others âthere is a small subsection that contains fabricsitmust once have worn, and some small personal items we canidentify:adata device called a phone, a stylus called a pen, credit tokens called coins and unique-access keys called cards,hygienic blotters calledtissues, a utility container called a purse, and aprinted current-affairs data medium called a newspaper, which is entitled Saturday Gazette.

The words relate to us how the cat was rescued from the tree by men and women made of fire. This seems sort of terrifying, butmaybecats havelessto fear from flamesthan we do. Weconsidergoing back to the jaguar, but our attention is diverted when thebackgroundnoise of the alarms is mutedsomewhat, and audible words sound over them.

An old enemy returns from the dead artificially, to challenge Batman and wreak havoc one last time.
During the early years of the transition from Gotham to Neo Gotham, a building known as âThe Gridâ is constructed. This serves as the hub for the cities power, communications and information. Everything electronic is powered and monitored here. The âbrainâ of Neo Gotham.
But The Riddler is on borrowed time and his fixation with beating Batman and being recognised by Gotham as âGothamâs cleverest carbon based life form!â (the base of his existence wonât be carbon much longer) directs his eyes to The Grid.
How could he not indulge in the perfect crime?
Riddler designs and constructs a machine that can copy, store and preserve consciousness.
In his final moments, the machine scans his entire consciousness.
Ready to be uploaded into The Grid giving Riddler 2.0 full control of the city.
But it goes awry. He miscalculated due to his arrogance (he has a genius level intelligence, but he just isnât wise) and the copy is quickly stored deep within the archives.
Like a digital Herpes Virus (I just canât wait to get Shingles in my lifetime, thanks ChickenPox!) it lies dormant in the âbrain/nervesâ and a mistake by engineers causes Electro Eddie to awake and reactivate, infecting The Grid and as a result, the city.
This gives him a Zero Year style reign over everyone. The dot of his question mark being an all seeing eye.
I think it would also be interesting that like Zero Year he challenges citizens to ask him riddles or challenges them to solve them.
It could be like in the story Riddle Factory where itâs Riddlerâs personal game show instead itâs all virtual and the chosen âcontestantsâ get transported to Riddlerâs Realm.
If they win they get privileges others donât. If they donât, they are killed and the intelligence is siphoned by Riddler (like in Batman Forever) causing him to get stronger.
The Batman 2022 played with the Riddle Factory idea as a Twitch knock-off on the dark web.
Maybe (similar to Gary Numanâs Replicas album) there would be privileged people who come to collaborate with Riddler and support him. Observing the warped âgameâ like the Zoms Zoms club goers watching âKill by Numbersâ in the song Down In The Park.
Here we see them âcheering him onâ with streams of green love heart emojis (like in the film)
The Grid itself turns into a green and purple checkerboard which acts as a giant Chinese Puzzle Box like the one Robin solved in What Is Reality?

hello all, I am originally from the US but I live in the UK now, and I want to sell handmade plushies of my characters at conventions and fairs. so I have come across a requirement for toys needing the CE/UKCA mark, compliance. i would do the self-test but I can't do chemical testing of the fabric. the definition of a "plush" is usually said to be "toy", however, my plushies aren't designed to be a toy but rather like a soft statue to display. would I still require the CE in this case because it could be construed as a toy due to its soft nature? thanks for the help. Hello! This is a collab fanfiction that u/Jade-The-Tiefling and I did together. It'll be titled Borrasca: Eye To Eye, since that title it's fitting. It still has some kinks to work out in terms of proof reading but once the full part comes out, it'll all be polished! I'm very nervous and excited to share it with you guys. This is only the teaser so far, but we hope to upload the first part soon. Hope you enjoy!
One hundred thirty two. That is the amount of people that were rescued that day on the mountain. I would be lying if I said it didnât take me by surprise to hear the news about the stables let alone the number of people that were there. It makes me think back to when I was a kid and all the strange and tragic things that happened to me then.
It's funny how time changes, how everything wilts away. How life goes on without a wait or stop. Sometimes you'll forget what lurked underneath, and when you do remember, it's already too late. I couldn't say my childhood wasn't bad but it's basically not as cheery as most kids have it.
My father was definitely sucked into his job as a lawyer, while my mom was bustling her back at an old diner, drinking her sorrows away. None had any time to spare for me, as a child. It made me a pretty independent child, and when my mother decided to give birth to Lucy, I became that mother figure that I never had. Aside from Lucy, I had nobody else to talk to.
School in Drisking was okay, but I would be lying if I said it was a good experience. I was pretty much alone from childhood to teens. Most kids already had their own friends, their designated trio. I would always refer to it that way. It was by sheer luck that I really did find a friend. Someone who I could share my emo playlist alongside with and in return she taught me a lot about DnD.
However like if the world knew I was meant to be alone, she was taken away from me. I never knew what happened to her, but I beat myself about. If only I didn't moved from Drisking, maybe I could had found her sooner.
The one thing that has remained consistent is my ritualistic daily breakfasts at the diner. From the start of my freshmen year, I never missed a day of going to the diner. It was my way of getting my head together and preparing for the day ahead. Even into my adulthood, I never stopped going. Imagine my surprise when I saw a face that Iâd honestly thought I would never see again. It didnât click at first. I just felt like I knew it.
She was about 5â8â with asymmetrical short dirty blond hair. Her clothes were mainly black and I can just see something protruding from her around her waist. She had a plain black shirt tucked into her pants with a well-kept belt. She wore a Nobel 6 zip up jacket -Clearly a Halo fan- and a small d20 pin on it. Where this seems normal to the untrained eye, I canât help but feel deja vu from looking at this woman. She seemed like this distant dream that is so fuzzy that itâs just familiar enough to almost recognize.
She walked into the diner and was given a table next to mine. I racked my brain trying to figure out who this was. I examined every part of her, again, and again, and again, just trying to make sense of who was sitting right there in front of me. She was so close, yet she was so distant from me.
âMay I help you?â She sighs, putting her coffee down on the table in a way that I can only describe as a contained irritation. âOr are you just going to stare at me like Iâm an exhibit?â
I wasnât even conscious I was staring. She turns to me and it all clicks together. The d20, the jacket, and, my new discovery, looking at her closer and can see her, the freckle on her upper lip.
âKat? Is that really you?â Stunned, I blurted out. I was adamant that that familiar woman had to be her. No one had that exact same freckle like her.
âThat depends on who is asking.â She rolls her eyes taking another sip of her coffee.
She doesnât recognize me? It makes since she didnât. Itâs been so long. Looking down at my empty plate, as I really wanted her to recognize me. Should I introduce myself? I thought, maybe I'll make her remember me.
âSo you don't know me? I can give a hint, I'm sure it might give you an idea on who I am.â I nervously laughed, as I dug into my black leather purse. Quickly, I pulled it out, plopping down a custom made d20 dice on the table. I remember painting my own dice black, since I was super obsessed with the color black as a teen.
âWait,â Kat puts down her coffee again, this time with more of a clang. âWhat is that? Where did you get this?â
Placing the dice right next to my plate, I felt my throat lumping already. âRemember on my 16th birthday, when it was only you and me. I remember we almost burned the house down because we had the dumb idea to bake a cake.â
âPaulyâŚ?â A slow recognition comes across Katâs face. Replaced soon by unadulterated joy. âWell, Iâll be damned!â
Tears started to well up my eyes, I was so ecstatic to finally see her eyes flashed with recognition. I slowly got up to my chair, every step I took felt like I was stepping in a pile of needles. Getting a great look on Kat, she looked different from the nerdy shy girl I knew. But, I didnât care how different Kat looked, I was happy to see my old friend alive.
âI just don't know what to say. I thought I've lost you.â I whispered, my voice already trembling as I spoke.
âOh,â Kat's voice cracks a bit too, pulling me into a hug. âItâs okay. Iâm here.â
Kat seemed to be holding back tears. Just being with her now, I couldnât even wrap my head around it. It seems so surreal. Even when I hugged her, it felt like it was a fabricated dream. But it wasn't, this was all flesh and blood.
âJustâŚhow are youâŚI'm so sorry that I never found you. Everyone, even the cops told me that you were long gone. I had hoped you'd come back. Just didn't know it would take this long.â Wiping my tears with my sleeve, I hugged even tighter. She was much taller than me, so I couldn't really comprehend it.
âHey, hey.â Kat chuckles a bit. Still holding back tears, I could tell. âItâs okay. YouâŚThere was no way you could have known. I have a lot of explaining to do, Iâm sure but letâs forget about that for now.â
âYeahâŚI'm just so happy to see you again.â I sat across from Kat's seat, picking up a napkin to wipe the rest of my tears. It rubbed off some of my mascara, making me think it was a horrible idea to try out some make up today. âSo, umâŚwhat have you been doing over these years? I see you got a gun holster over there?â
âWell, IâŚâ Kat cut herself off. âI was a SWAT operative. Itâs, uh, a long story. How about you?â
âSWAT? No wonder you look so tough and badass!â I then continued enthusiastically. âWell, I'm actually a nurse practitioner. I'm very specialized in prenatal care. I know it's funny because I really didn't like babies back then.â
âOh? ThatâsâŚnice.â Katâs voice shudders. âAnd I wouldnât call myself a badass for being SWAT. ItâŚmakes you question a lot of things about yourself for sure. Itâs all in the interest of others though.
My smile slowly fell, as I was scared if I might've made her upset. âI see, I understand. We both are doing jobs that help people, and probably had to endure some bad cases once in a while.â
âDidâŚdid you ever find Kincade?â
Kincade. I haven't heard of that name since after moving Drisking. I took a deep breath, as I responded. âI did manage to find Kincade after your disappearance. They never told me what happened, and I lost contact ever since. Last time I checked, Kincade moved to California.â
âOh, thank god.â Kat sighs out of relief, as she takes a seat back down. âKnowing that girl, sheâs living it up in LA. Well, I was actually in New York all this time. I thought it would be a good place to settle down. For what it was worth, the NYPD was good to me.â
âOh I can tell she is. I followed her Instagram, and she's always posting pictures of parties and such.â I tucked a strand of hair in the back of my ear, while I pulled out my phone to show Kat Kincadeâs page. âEven if they don't want to talk to me, I'm just super glad they're okay.â
I sometimes wonder why Kincade hasn't had contact with me yet, but deep inside I felt like they were somewhat upset with me. The strange thing was that once Kincade showed up, my mother just randomly disappeared. My father had always told me that she's just had it with us, and left to do her own life. However I never believed that story. Sure my mom was a raging drunk chain-smoker, but she always loved Lucy and I. Her just leaving out of the blue isn't in character, and I just know that something wrong might have occurred.
Kat inspects the page. I can tell it struck something in her. I knew from this point she was holding back a bit with her emotions but for some reason, this broke her. Suddenly I saw my childhood best friend break into a waterfall of sadness. She started to sob. As if she had a dam behind her eyes and they just burst.
âKat.. Oh shit, I didnât mean to make you cry,â I rushed towards Katâs side, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. It broke me to see Kat this way, yet I couldnât help but wonder what made her let out her tears. My eyes suddenly landed at one of Katâs wrist, a light brown scar was marred on her skin. It was half covered by her sleeve, its appearance was more like a stab wound than a slash. I could tell Kat noticed me staring at it, as she quickly covered it up. The sky was now in a vibrant orange and magenta hue, while the bright sun started to slowly settle down.
Kat finally regained her composure after a few minutes of apologizing profusely.
âI know.â Kat weakly pushes out from her lips through her tears. âI know you see them. I know I have a lot of explaining to do. I got thatâŚfrom a mission that Iâm not sure if youâre ready to hear.â
Leaning against her shoulder, I looked up at Kat with an understanding expression. âI think Iâm ready to hear about this. Over these years, I wanted to know what happened in Drisking. I donât want to stay ignorant anymore.â
âLetâsâŚâ Kat wipes her eyes, only for more tears to take the others place. âLetâs go somewhere a little more private.â

Hi. I need some advice about publishing my next game.
I am a writer and a bit of game designer. Not long ago I came close to finishing my 4-th game. I work alone on it, so I donât respond to anyone and can make whatever choices I want about it (I clarify that in case of anyone asking about what other members of the team want).
My previous 3 games were free. There were several reasons for that, but the main one is that I always wanted for anyone to be able to play my game. Living in Ukraine, where economical situation ever changed only for the worse, I could not afford to buy many games, so I had to resort to piracy, and I still do, because some games now can cost more than my entire month income. Experiencing interactive stories helped me to survive in society that has no place for disabled people, and I want to do the same for others who are in need of something positive in the lives. So my next game will be free as well.
But, at the same time I consider making a paid version in Steam. Why?
Pros:
So I ended up having a triple-n game â quest, parody, musical (I wonder if I should put it in the description?). I believe that with proper marketing it could find the playerbase, but with it being limited to standard amount of Steam views I have doubts that it will be large enough to at least pay back the entry fee (I donât plan to put a high price on it since itâs quite short). I showed parts of the game to my friends, one of them even works in gamedev as an artist, and got positive feedback. I know itâs not much, but that + my almost 20 years of gamedev experience should be enough for the game to not be a complete garbage. But I am not sure if I would be able to reach the target audience either.
So, the question are â is it worth to risk and go semi-commercial? I even created a bit of funny extra content for the pirate version of the game. But still cannot decide if I should go for it.

- My debts are increasing, my cats getting sick and it eats away all my money. And the prices on everything rise as UAH course keeps worsening, and government is planning to increase communal service prices a lot without ever increasing incomes. So any extra cash will be helpful to pay either debts or medicine.
- I donât understand marketing, at all. Max I can do is throw a couple of posts on reddit gaming subs. Steam will automatically give some visibility for the game. From all my previous games most popular were the one I released on Steam. People will still be able to torrent the game, try it out and buy it after if they like it.
- In current state of my country and my health this is probably my last game, so I just curious to see how commercial release would work out
- Steam has forums where people could discuss the game, and reviews where they can write feedback
- Entry fee. Itâs the biggest issue for me, because itâs almost my entire income for 2 months. Will I be able to return this money? If yes, then itâs nothing to worry about. If no, my debt will increase.
- Availability. Steam removed the standard methods to replenish itâs purse from my country, idk why. There are other methods described online, but not sure if they still work.
- Niche. Being a solo dev without any art or programmer knowledge is very limiting. So I had to cut out a lot of ideas, including combat, turning the game into hybrid between the quest and visual novel. Think of Dreamfall series, but with less puzzles and more dialogue. This genre has fans, but is not so much as some of the others. It's also not super impressive visually â I canât draw, and all of my budget for this game went on chocolate and antidepressants. I does not mean I did not try to make it look pretty and have nice details â once I spent entire day on making an elevator opening animation, and did a lot of other small, but cool details. Also my friend helped me to fix some of the most problematic visual issues, so now itâs not bad either. Just a bit minimalistic in some places.

My thoughts: I own an authentic so I spent a long time between order and receiving with DD getting all the small details she overlooked corrected.
