Catholicism: All about the Catholic faith

2008.05.27 06:57 Catholicism: All about the Catholic faith

/Catholicism is a place to present new developments in the world of Catholicism, discuss theological teachings of the Catholic Church, provide an avenue for reasonable dialogue amongst people of all beliefs, and grow in our own spirituality. Catholic Christianity offers the world the fullness of the Christian Faith.

2024.05.14 16:32 Confident-Lemon7990 I'm new to this community and looking for advice on writing a new piano piece.

Can anyone give me some advice on writing my piece? I'm writing my own variation for solo piano on the famous song "The Lord's Prayer" where the melody develops in the style of dramatic Italian opera arias by Verdi, Mascagni and Puccini. I've been listrning to a lot of Romantic era/early 20th century music and studying scores ever since I was a teenager, and compared to those pieces, the original melody sounds more like Schubert's and Fauré's songs.

2024.05.14 04:01 Dank_meme_kid New phone for business owner

Hey all, Currently have a Huawei p30 pro (since 2019) and have absolutely loved this phone up until a couple months ago. It no longer connects wirelessly to my trucks android auto, sometimes missed calls don't show up anymore, battery only lasts a day and a bit. I just started my own business in the Carpentry industry and I'm now relying on my phone to run things successfully.
What I need: -long lasting battery, I mostly don't have access to charging my phone as I'm in and out of my truck or working -rugged, have dropped this phone way too many times and haven't had issues so I'd like that again -good call quality is a must -good to better camera (don't need the best of the best) is also a must -being Italian/Canadian I'm frugal so I'd like to keep it cheap although I know that's a hope and a prayer -at the moment I believe that's it.
I don't stream any videos (rarely YouTube), I don't play any games, just need to make phone calls, send invoices on the go, be able to price materials or search if things are in stock, phone calls very frequently.
I'm not the brightest guy when it comes to tech, I'm absolutely lost most of the time when it comes to that. Just hoping for some good advice/guidence, thanks!

2024.05.14 01:53 DepartureHonest7948 The Uncompromising Blissful Extravagance of His Presence!

CMM.World & CMMTheology.org
The Great Harvest is here. Christ's Mandate for Missions and CMMTheology build strong, organic relationships globally as we worship, grow and equip together. Like Joshua and Caleb and the Apostle Paul, we see with faith what He sees in each person (to help each reach fullness), group (many streams and backgrounds in unity) and nations (sheep vs. goat nations). Our passion is to love, connect, equip and send with the simplicity, fullness, and power of the Gospel.
The Uncompromising Blissful Extravagance of His Presence! Inbox
By CMM.World CMMTheology.org - November 10, 2022
Dear Mighty One,
I see the Lord's eye upon us we discover by revelation the 'new thing' He is doing in our lives and of those of us who, beyond the present darkness, gaze into His eyes. The 'tuning fork' of Yahweh is orchestrating the sons and daughters of our living God in growing holy remnant unity to withstand as we stand with Him fearlessly in the boldness of the faith of God in this hour. Egypt is behind us, and the covenantal promises and prophetic words we have received (1 Tim. 1:18) empower us by His Holy Spirit to advance in warfare, humbly growing in the spirit of wisdom and revelation.

Yesterday as I encouraged some friends, I said, 'stay in the blissful extravagance of His presence.' Today I saw in Psalm 34 His eyes are upon us in vs. 8 & 9 and v:15 about the 'uncompromisingly righteous.' We are to be holy as He is holy. That leaves no room for any more compromise or seeking to please man or the traditions of men, being free of the fear of man, the religious spirit, and any demonic activity. We are seated in heavenly places with Christ Jesus. Lord, help us understand by revelation to walk in all the authority we have been given by Jesus Christ.
Psalm 34:8-9 'O taste and see that the Lord [our God] is good! Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) is the man who trusts and takes refuge in Him. O fear the Lord, you His saints [revere and worship Him]! For there is no want to those who truly revere and worship Him with godly fear.'
v. 15 'The eyes of the Lord are toward the [uncompromisingly] righteous and His ears are open to their cry.'
Chuck Pierce shared this amazing word from Penny Jackson that is right on for this season: https://christsmandate.blogspot.com/2022/11/chuck-pierce-shares-powerful-word-from.html
May YOUR November be full of Thanksgiving and Praise for you and yours as YOU enjoy The Uncompromising Blissful Extravagance of His Presence!
Thank you for praying for CMM and all your fellow CMM Global Family worldwide. Pray for all the missionaries, schools, and students in CMM College of Theology in the US, Ecuador, Canada, Cuba, Myanmar, Nigeria, and Thailand.
Pray for the new wells and the living water and safe water recently drilled or soon to be drilled in Tanzania, India, Malawi, and Pakistan.
Pray for our upcoming Christmas gift campaigns to bless children and youth in many nations. Many of them are precious, beautiful children (orphans). As the Lord leads, pray about giving any amount to bless dear CMM children this Christmas. https://cmmworld.kindful.com/
Pray for each other, dear friends. We all know we each need prayers going up to Heaven for all those on the front lines. We each are on the front lines!
Please pray for me as I speak tomorrow online to a crusade with 8,000 expected to attend in Pakistan. In December, I will speak at conferences in Liberia and Kenya with fellow CMM Ordained ministers Robert Bimba (Liberia), Tom Omukhobero, and Daniel and Christine Oyoko (Kenya).
We are working on plans and trips for 2023. If you would like to have some of our awesome CMM family speakers for a conference in your area or would like to join or lead a missions trip, we would love to hook you up with dear friends in many nations.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Louis Blom of Judea Harvest as Associate Director of Missions at CMM. This strategic alliance multiplies the efforts and impact in building the Kingdom of our God, for His glory. https://youtu.be/HXfP8tCySRc

Many blessings and shalom from us all here at the home office and around the world.

We just celebrated two of our six schools' graduations on June 4th in the US and June 11th in Ecuador and we thank the Lord for all He has done in their lives and will do in this new era. We honor the faith in action of each of the seventy-eight students (in the USA and Ecuador schools this year)of all ages and from different streams and backgrounds. We thank the Lord for the hunger, perseverance and faith to finish strong. Each one encountered the Lord in fresh new ways as their hunger and perseverance in faith reaped eternal change as evidenced in their dissertations and heavenly encounters. In the last few months we have graduated 196 students from our global schools. All glory to the Lord as we enter our 16th year of offering affordable, life changing accredited degrees around the world. Each year our school is led by the Holy Spirit to go higher and deeper in excellence in academic standards and spirit-led equipping in a truly experiential, interactive, a

Prophetic Encouragement for 2022 by Jorge Parrott
By CMM.World CMMTheology.org - January 02, 2022

Prophetic Encouragement for 2022 By Jorge Parrott (all scriptures NKJV) (Graphic art by Nancy G. Daniel) Despite the impending wars, division, chaos, calamity, and deceptive controls we hear the voice of our Lord at times speaking, or roaring, or whispering, and breathing on the sons of God. Are we listening yet? Heaven’s roar is clear to those with an ear to hear what the Spirit of the Living God is saying. This year holds untold opportunities, many answered prayers, and the cries of many hearts if we arise to walk obediently in His fullness, not growing weary in well-doing, nor fainting in the heat of this fiery battle. Deut. 6:4 ‘ The Lord our God, the Lord is one! 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.’ Jesus was asked many questions. What should you ask

Highlights Of Our Amazing Trip To The Holy Land With Chris Reed And Bart Peacher
By CMM.World CMMTheology.org - July 19, 2022

Highlights Of Our Amazing Trip To The Holy Land With Chris Reed And Bart Peacher Prov. 16:9 ' A man’s mind plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps and makes them sure.' We are continually blessed and in awe of how the Lord breathes and moves in our lives. As we press into the high calling of Jesus Christ and we grow in intimacy and trust by faith, His love, grace, and mercy unfold in surprising ways. I had not been to Israel since 2017. So much has changed in the world since then as we see the tremendous acceleration of the times and seasons. Chaos, control, and corruption are increasing at an alarming rate. Our only hope is in Jesus Christ and His righteousness. Divine Encounters Abound As We Are Led By Holy Spirit And Make Ourselves Available Many churches are led by their pursuit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil instead of the knowledge of the Tree of Life. As we surrender fully to the Holy Spirit, we learn to walk in deep humility and attenti

2024.05.13 21:11 EatOutMyGrandma I Wish There Were More Greek Fighting Game Characters

Greek American here. Lived in both Greece and the US. I've always been very close with my heritage, and I've also always loved fighting games. Been playing since Killer Instinct on Super Nintendo, and I graduated into being a Tekken player as I got older and became more serious about the hobby. I always wished I could have a badass Greek character in one of the games that I play, and when I started learning SF and saw Marisa, I thought my prayers had been answered. A badass muscle mommy who is obsessed with Pankration and wears her hair in the style of a Spartan helmet. Hell, she even has a Spartan/Trojan helmet in some of her customizations. Come to find out..... shes Italian? Thats BS. You created this character based completely around an ancient Greek martial art, gave her a Greek aesthetic, and then made her Italian. Nothing against Italians, they're our cultural cousins, but its still disappointing.
And don't even bring up the Greek Soul Calibur characters. They were about as interesting as watching paint dry, and Greeks aren't blonde.
Here's hoping Tekken creates a cool, original character to represent my motherland at some point in Tekken 8. They knocked it out of the park with Miguels design, so I know they can nail the southern European aesthetic.

2024.05.13 19:33 Several_Bag_1770 Am I doing enough?

Hi all! I think I am just looking for mostly reassurance at this point regarding taking care of my grandma. Here is my situation (buckle up, this is a long one):
I was estranged from my biological father and his family from my teen years until about 2 years ago. Long story short, my parents got divorced when I was 2, my mom moved me out of state when she married my stepfather and I spent every summer in childhood visiting my father's family. For context, I am the only child of my father (my mom had other children from a later marriage, my half siblings, my father never had any more kids). Around my teen years, those visits stopped and I just kept in contact with my biological grandmother on my dad's side through the occasional letters over the years. I have a lot of resentment toward my parents for their poor decision making and how it's affected so much of how I act in my relationships as an adult. I have sought out therapy and am doing my best to recover.
In May of 2022, I received a phone call from my paternal grandma (who was 97 at the time), which was so unusual and very nerve-wracking because she never called me, we only communicated through letters. She told me that my father was very sick but couldn't give me many details. She was very hard of hearing and knew nothing about his illness except that it was a "blood disease." My father had been divorced 3 times and after the 3rd one, he moved in with my grandma and they were great friends. I think it was a good arrangement for them both. After that phone call, I did a lot of thinking and soul searching and decided that I should visit my father.
My husband (who never met this side of my family) and I visited my father and grandma later that month. I was shocked at their condition. My father never got up from his chair and looked so frail and sick. My grandma was actually in better health than him despite her age, but she still obviously couldn't care for him in his sickness. She could barely get up from her chair and was very unsteady walking around. I tried to get details from my father about his health but he was confused and unable to tell me anything concrete. But he did tell me that hospice was coming to see him the next day. So we came back the next day to be there when the hospice intake nurse came. He was even more confused the next day, couldn't spell his middle name or answer questions clearly. I did my best to answer questions (even though I barely knew him since we had been estranged for so long) and provided my phone number as a contact for them. It was all incredibly overwhelming. That meeting ended with my father wanting a little more time to think about it before being officially admitted to hospice. My husband and I went back home and I was overwhelmed about everything.
A few days later, I got a phone call from hospice. My father had reached a point where he was incontinent and belligerent and my grandma called the phone number on the card the hospice worker had left from her visit because she was desperate for help. I was suddenly thrust into a situation of trying to make decisions for a man I barely knew states away. It was obvious my 97 year old grandmother could no longer care for him at home, so he was taken to the hospital. I was able to talk with his doctor over the phone who told me that he had leukemia. The treatment he had been receiving was not working and he estimated that my father had 6 weeks to live. He would be admitted to an inpatient hospice facility until he died. I barely was able to process that because there was another huge issue: who is going to look after my grandma after he dies?
(A little more family background here: my father has an older brother who lives out of state. The two brothers never got along and from what I hear, my uncle had the tendency to rub people the wrong way. My uncle only communicated with his mother - my grandma - through the occasional birthday and Christmas card. That uncle has 2 kids, my cousins, who live in the same state as my uncle. The older cousin calls my grandma once in a while. My grandma has distant relatives who live about 45 minutes away and visit very occasionally.)
My husband and I talked a lot and I decided that I needed to go and stay with my grandma while my dad was in hospice. I was able to work remotely and so was my husband, so we made the drive back to my grandma's house and stayed with her, taking her to visit my dad every day, cooking, cleaning, etc.
My dad died on May 31, 2022, only about a week after he was admitted to hospice. I handled all the logistics and planning of the funeral. My grandma, who was totally competent mentally, was stone cold deaf and emotionally unable to handle any of it, so I was left to do everything, despite barely knowing him and not really having the chance to process my own very complicated grief at losing an estranged parent. Fortunately he had the wisdom to take out a life insurance policy years before with me as the beneficiary and I was able to pay for the funeral with that money.
And instead of his death being the end of something, it was the beginning of the most stressful time in my adult life. I spent day and night looking into care options for my grandma. We finally got her some hearing aides (something my father never thought to do for her I guess) and I spent hours on the internet, researching what is covered by Medicare, if she was eligible for Medicaid, etc. I called her state's agency for aging, multiple home health aide companies, the works. We had to go back to our home state to resume our lives, and all the while, my mental energy was spent on worrying about her and running through every option for care over and over again.
And here we are, TWO YEARS LATER. My grandma is now 99 years old at the end of this month. In May of last year, my husband very unexpectedly and heartbreakingly lost his job of 12 years. After that happened, we decided it was time to pick up our lives and move in with my grandma. While we were living in our state and she alone in hers after my dad died, I called her pretty much every day to check on her. I was constantly anxious and on edge. We visited her as much as we could but it is a long drive and we couldn't always put our lives on hold to visit her.
We moved in in December. And it has absolutely been one of the hardest times of my life. My husband and I are in dire straits financially (he is still struggling to find consistent work and my work is seasonal, we're just getting into my busy season but honestly, I don't make a lot of money). My grandma can still barely hear with her hearing aides in so I always have to raise my voice to talk to her and repeat myself multiple times. I spend hours of my time taking her to doctor's appointments (which is not an easy feat because she is wheelchair bound outside of the home), on the phone with doctors, picking up medicine, etc. I feel constant pressure to make sure she cared for. Overall she is a pleasant person but she is also a master of Italian Catholic guilt and passive aggressiveness. There is no one else to help us. I feel like I am slowly dying inside little by little every day.
So if you've made it this far, here is where I am looking for reassurance. We have to go back to our home state multiple times this summer for family obligations and my work (I am a wedding photographer and contracted to photograph weddings this summer back home). For example, at the end of May, we have to be gone for over 2 weeks to go to multiple graduations of nieces and nephews, open houses, etc. And I feel extremely guilty for leaving.
Here is more about my grandma and her current status for context:
Here are the things we have set in place to help care for her in our absence:
So my question is this: is this enough? Can I leave her and not feel guilty? I've spent countless hours and tears struggling with this question.
(Thank you to all of you who read all this and my prayers are with you on your own caregiving journeys!)

Hi all! I think I am just looking for mostly reassurance at this point.

2024.05.13 06:21 SpiritedConcept4392 Year and a Half Worth of Tea: AITA for not going to the Rehearsal Dinner

I have not heard from “my bestie” for over a month since her bachelorette party. We have known each other for 7 years, and since 2022, I have expressed to her how alone I feel and how depressed I am. I've shared with her that I feel I have no support system. Recently, before the bachelorette, I even told her that I started therapy and began my regimen of antidepressants, which has helped me immensely from my previous super depressive thoughts. She is the only who knows how bad my depression was besides her.I want to talk about how the Bachelorette went, how I did not enjoy myself, and a bit of background before the Bachelorette weekend. For the sake of confidentiality, I will name the bride-to-be “B”. We went to university in London in 2016 and even ended up living together in 2018. We were super close, and honestly, she was my best friend. At first, I thought we were having fun, but I felt out of place. To reiterate how much effort I put into making sure I made it to the bachelorette, I am in law school, and I had to study two weeks' worth of law school material—torts and public policy disputes. I crammed it all into one week. Not to mention, I also had a group project, so I had sleepless nights, staying up until 3/4 in the morning to ensure I did not have to study during the trip. During the trip, I even had to log into class one day and talk to my group partners to work on part of the group project
A bit of personal backstory: My parents are Cuban, my grandparents are Spanish, and I have Spanish cousins living in Spain. I've been to Spain plenty of times to know the country well, and when I go there, it feels like home to me. Coming from a Cuban/Spanish culture, in Latino cultures, we naturally speak to each other in Spanish, and when we have parties, everyone dances and has fun—that's what I'm used to when I visit Spain.
Bachelorette Comment:
Going back to the bachelorette in March, I arrived thinking we would have a good time. However, during one of the nights, one of B's friends, who is from London (Let's call her Z), made a pretty racist comment. When I relayed this to my sister and another friend who is also Latina, they confirmed it was racist and not okay for someone to say. Because we were in Spain, I spoke Spanish during the trip, which is natural for me. We were playing one of those bachelorette games, and at least in my experience with bachelorette parties, you tell people, "Yeah, we're doing the bachelorette party, this is the person who's getting married," and then get them a drink or whatever. It's supposed to be festive and loud. We did like a bingo dare game, and to prove that we did it, we would have to take a picture with the person or a video. After one of the nights, the task was to dance with a stranger, and in Spanish, I was saying to a married couple, "Is it okay if I dance with you because we're doing a bachelorette game, and I need to take a picture to prove that I did?" I communicated with Spanish people in Spanish because that's natural in my culture.
On the Uber ride back, this girl "Z" said that I needed to stop speaking in Spanish and stop speaking to strangers in Spanish for our safety because she didn't understand what I was saying. She insisted I stop telling people in Spanish that we were celebrating the bachelorette because she didn't feel safe. Additionally, she and others in the group told me I needed to sound like a tourist and not like a local because they wanted to get into clubs without paying cover charges. I explained that we were playing a game, and that's how people knew why we were taking pictures of them. It is rude to take pics of strangers without them knowing why. She said not to explain to them, especially because we were in Madrid and I should speak only in English. I defended myself, pointing out that we made friends with some Italians on the first night because I spoke fluent Italian. She responded that the Italians were different from the Spanish people, which I didn't understand because it's essentially the same thing.
I looked around, and no one defended me. Because of this, I felt so uncomfortable from the conversation that I closed up internally, wondering what I was doing wrong. Was I ruining the trip? I didn't know, but I've felt more isolated from the group since this incident. During the whole trip, I had to be careful about speaking Spanish in Spain, where I always speak Spanish unless someone speaks English. These girls all spoke English, and most spoke more than one language, but I was the only one fluent in English, Spanish, and Italian, so I could communicate with almost anyone in Madrid.
The next day, we went into a club that we had tried to get into the day before and only succeeded this time because I finally gave in and spoke to the bouncer in Spanish; I got looks for speaking Spanish. In this instance, I sincerely spoke with the bouncer, explaining that Madrid is special to my friend B, who is getting married, and we are simply celebrating her upcoming wedding. He let us in for free when he previously charged the group an expensive cover fee.
Food incidents:
When we started the trip, I was looking forward to enjoying Spanish (Galician) cuisine, which is a big part of my cultural background and a source of personal joy. Initially, the group wanted to try Spanish food and indulge in local gastronomy, so I felt confident knowing exactly what they would love and where to eat. I even asked if it was okay if I ordered pulpo (octopus) since it was B’s bachelorette trip, wanting to make sure it was in line with her preferences. However, as the trip progressed, the group mainly wanted to eat burgers and fries, and the only Spanish items they seemed interested in were Manchego cheese. We were in a town that was the perfect opportunity to try local Spanish food. I suggested ordering a paella for the group, to which they agreed, alongside their orders of steak and fries. However, when the paella arrived, they indicated it was for me to eat, and they all continued eating their dishes. I had only a few fries then because the paella took longer to prepare and was delicious, but it was not meant to be eaten by one person alone.
There was another incident on the first day out. I'm familiar with Spanish tortillas, which are like a version of an egg frittata cooked with potatoes, then flipped from the pan onto a plate. They're meant to be shared. We sat in a restaurant where the waiter spoke no English, so I ordered in Spanish for everyone. I suggested that every two people share one tortilla because they would be large and too much for one person to handle. This suggestion was met with some frustration from the girls (Z & B), who insisted they knew what a Spanish tortilla was like, claiming it was small. I explained that might be the case in London, but here in Spain, they are substantial and take a while to cook because it’s meant to be fresh and huge. True to my words, we waited an hour for our food, which is expected for fresh, well-prepared tortillas. They expressed frustration with the wait, questioning why it took so long. Lo and behold, when the tortillas finally arrived, they were too large for one person, just as I had described.
A bit of pre-bachelorette drama backstory:
B is the bachelorette, and when she got engaged, it was expected and not a surprise at all. We had a group chat about it happening, and she called when it happened. Even though she expected it, it still felt surreal to her, and she knew the location where it was happening. Mind you, she was flown halfway across the world to be proposed to, so it was obvious for about a month that it was happening.
Months before the engagement, I had planned my birthday in Portugal, and she said she would be there. She was to fly there and everything. After being engaged, I still stuck to that same story. However, when it came down to it, she said she could not make it. I had told her I felt like she just led me to believe she would be there. The engagement was not an excuse because we knew it was happening well over a month ago—about two months, to be precise—and it was confirmed because she saw the ring order invoice. Then, the guy booked the vacation a few weeks ago, and before that, she said that she expected the festivities would start after they got engaged. Even with all that, I asked if she thought she would make it, and she said yes. Mind you, I kept asking her every month and then every other week as it got closer if she was coming, and we picked out hotel rooms. Yet, at the very last minute, she said she would not be there because she just got engaged and was busy... and mind you, the week before, she said she was looking into flights, which is why I said I felt like she led me on. She should have told me from the moment she knew she would not be there, or even suspected that she would not be there, instead of saying the complete opposite. I think she just knew she would never go, which is why I was so hurt; she lied to me. This is where she started not reaching out to me as frequently as before. Before, I would hear from her almost every day, and after this, it went down to once a week. But now, after the bachelorette, I have not heard from her for over a month.
I made an effort to head to London and made an effort to see her for a bit. I only had a good chance to talk to her last summer when she came to see me. So, I stood my ground and spoke my truth, whether she liked it or not (and she did not like it). This conversation lasted about two days. I was crying so much because, supposedly, this was my best friend, and she said she would be there for me, and lately, it felt as if she had not. I told her everything and how much she hurt me by leading me on. I don’t think she should keep doing that because friends don’t. I do not want her to invite me to her wedding out of pity or to be polite, and that she should have the people she wants at her wedding. It's okay if we are growing apart because we live in different countries, and I do not expect us to be as close as before. It is completely fine if she has found new people she is close with. She assured me we were still friends and wanted me at the wedding. I even helped with the rehearsal dinner planning and whatnot.
Since the incident on my birthday, she stopped liking my Instagram posts and sometimes blocked me from her Instagram stories. Honestly, I have no idea why. Additionally, she is having two weddings. When she visited me last summer, she assured me she wanted me at her wedding and kept insisting the first one was the most important and the one where everyone was going, while the second was just for family and cousins. I asked to know if I should get a lengha and the dress code for both weddings (if she wanted me to go). She insisted that none of her friends were going to the second one. However, the day after the racist comment in Spain, the other girls were talking about the second wedding and where they were getting their lenghas, talking as if I knew everyone was going. I felt so out of the loop and even more isolated.
Post Bachelorette:
Also, B mentioned that we were staying with her at the bridal suite. I said, just in case, I booked a hotel, and if the other girls needed a place, they could just split the room with me. Then, B said she would be in her room alone, which I thought was fine since it was her day and she should be comfortable. When I reached out to who I am assuming is the maid of honor, she said that she needed to be with the bride to help with the wedding, so I am guessing she is the only one staying with the bride, but honestly, I don’t care at this point because the hotel was paid for. I offered to help because she was stressing about not having money to book a hotel, which is why I offered in the first place.
I've always made it a point to check in on how she is doing. In my last message to her, she mentioned she was in prayers, so I asked how that was going, but since then, she has not reached out to me and left me on read. I'd also like to note that I was supposedly a bridesmaid. Recently, she posted a "bridesmaids brunch," which included all the girls from the Spain trip. She tagged them all under "bridesmaids" and tagged "here in spirit" with the other two girls who did not make it to the Spain trip but completely left me out.
Given that I have not heard from her, she does not know that I have secured a legal fellowship in Spain. I do not think I make it to the rehearsal dinner, if I go it would be cutting it close and I would be very late. I finish work too close to when the last train leaves, but I can make it to the wedding. I'm beginning to feel that I shouldn’t even try to attend the rehearsal dinner.
AITA for missing the rehearsal dinner?

2024.05.11 07:00 sofiamonamour 8 hours on Tinder, norriage next

I was chatting some 4 months with a Mexican astrophysicist, like you do. We had good chemistry, but he decided Sofia, Bulgaria and Leicester, UK, was too long distance. I liked the guy, but at the same time I felt like I was dodging a bullet - he was depressed, and had a slight cruel streak, things like deliberately leaving me on read whenever I expressed feelings or opinions he apparently didn't approve of. While I was moping around at work, licking the puncture wounds on my pride, my QA and best friend (I work customer support) told me to shut it and just go out on Tinder.
Now, without context, this is gonna sound like bragging, but I am a Scandi in Bulgaria, and here on the Balkans, my blue eyes seem to be the bee's knees. So I match with everyone and their fucking aunts on OLD. I'm nothing spectacular - I look OK for my age and am cute rather than pretty, but definitely more a 6 than a 7. But yes, a lot of completely random matches, and most of them low effort. It has stressed me out before, to the point I don't even try to go on dates. I know this is a luxury problem, but it has still been a problem - guys here just want me to be their novelty Scandi toy, basically.
But I don't want to live the rest of my life alone, so what the f. I downloaded the app, uploaded some recent, not too good pics to dissuade the creeps. Started swiping. Matching left and right, chatting to people. An ayurvedic vegan baker, a Turkish fellow customer support guy ten years younger, some hot single dads, a cute Italian guy. Nothing that really hit it off, but plenty to work on.
And 8 hours in, at the end of the slow workday, I match with a really hot guy. Tinder shows him way outside my radius, but he is so hot, and I am already regretting this whole endeavor, so right swipe, wtf, I don't care.
And after 20+ messages of "hi" (if I didn't manage to write first, I always try to compliment something in the first message - I'm not a fan of having the guy write first, this is a dual enterprise after all), this guy writes the funniest, dumb, deadbeat message, alluding to my profile ("I used to be young and promising" among other things I wrote there) and I just laugh out loud. Which I tell him. Since then, we just let all pretenses fall. We just started to be ourselves. He tried to joke ask me to marry him on like the fifth message, but accidentally wrote "norry me", so I told him that norry him I will.
We soon realize we share so much: picking mushrooms up the mountains is life, money comes and goes, generall no fucks given attitude to life - we can even compare the bombings we survived. I was a medical aid volunteer in Ukraine, he lived in Belgrade when NATO bombed them (he still found the bombings legitimate, his fellow countrymen were smack in the middle of genocide). We both lost most in war, and came to the same conclusion: now is all we have.
We managed to chat 3 days before I just hopped on a bus, crossed the border to Serbia, and met up with him. I overslept, was so broke I couldn't afford to buy a bottle of water, didn't even have time to shave or shower, had to spend my last cash on a taxi to the bus station, I forgot my toothbrush (he remembered to bring one for me, but promptly forgot his own), and I wasn't even nervous. I just knew. For the first time in a very long time (I come from ten years of a loveless, abusive marriage), I felt that I hadn't lost my potential to love. Later, he told me this was exactly his feeling too.
We almost made out at the bus stop - I just saw him and felt "there he is, my man" and we spent the weekend having the best sex of my life (it wasn't advanced or anything, it just felt 100% right and there was such a trust between us, we could laugh even when things went wrong, as they are bound to), drinking beer in the park, cooking and feeding each other all the homemade stuff we had brought, and climbing up a mountain hunting morels. When I was about to leave, he filled my empty pack of cigarettes with his homerolled ones. A perfect first date. Yeah, you can see why I have had trouble finding someone previously ...
Since then, we have been virtually inseparable. Video chats every night, every weekend I hop on the bus, he has applied for a new passport so he can come over, and we are planning on moving to Spain or Portugal, where I can easily pick up work. The norrying part is going to happen too, even though none of us actually believe in marriage, but we need to fix him some EU recidency. (My idea, not his, he is definitely not a reverse passport bro.)
Currently on the bus there with a kilo of Ukrainian pyroshki, russian spicy carrot salad and some Georgian chacha (think grappa) I managed to shake down from a friend, and a lot of other goodies. He scored some elusive mountain cheese and weed from friends of friends yesterday. I will bring my Ukrainian fermented cucumbers.
Does it all sound like we're crazy? Yes, we certainly are. Will it work out? I have no idea. But so many people I see in this sub are risk averse to the point of not seeing the person beyond the potential red flags. Life is short though, and at our age, it is even shorter. I don't see how I could lose on this - I can sure imagine us go separate ways, amicably, some 10 years from now due to whatever, life I guess, but does it matter? If I can have one, or ten, or maybe even the rest of my life with this batshit crazy, hot, funny guy, I won't regret it.
I just wanted to share an inspirational (or deterrent, depening on your vantage point) story that goes against all the good advice on this forum, because I want you all to remember there is no right or wrong way to do this. If it hits, go with it - it might all go to dust, but still.
I will end this with a quote from my favorite poet, Anne Sexton. Don't forget this, please, in your quest for love:
"Love? Be it man. Be it woman. It must be a wave you want to glide in on, give your body to it, give your laugh to it, give, when the gravelly sand takes you, your tears to the land. To love another is something like prayer and can't be planned, you just fall into its arms because your belief undoes your disbelief."

Strategic Connecting Toward Freshness and Fullness in God
CMM is strategically positioned with proven, trusted, indigenous friends in many nations activating, equipping, connecting and releasing the saints to reach their people and nation with the love of Father God.
CMM is cross-denominational. We are seated in heavenly places with Christ Jesus and the completed work of Jesus Christ on the cross assures us of victory, through trials, as we are trained to rule and reign with the Father's heart and love of justice and mercy and walk humbly before Him.
CMM is a 501c3 founded in 1978. We also handle donor relations for approximately 500 missionaries globally, ordained ministers, as we enjoy the Lord in fellowship, offering Christian accredited degrees globally, church planting, healing, counseling, orphanages, and prayer centers, creative arts, prophetic, humanitarian aid and disaster relief, medical, stopping human trafficking, leadership training and creative incubators for entrepreneurs, disaster relief, and connecting destinies.
Call 704-225-3927 or email office@cmm.world to learn more or to have one of our many CMM amointed, itinerant ministers speak at your church or group, in person or online.

2024.05.03 00:59 CJlion827 Ranking (Almost) Every Billy Joel Song

Ranking (Almost) Every Billy Joel Song
So my friend and I worked together on this list. It is a little old, so my opinions have changed a bit (Ex. every song in the "Never Heard" tier I have now listened to) but I still think it holds up. What do you all think? Also, they are ranked in between the tiers from left to right, so top left (Scenes) would be #1, while bottom right (The Mexican Connection) is last.

2024.04.30 01:53 DepartureHonest7948 The Uncompromising Blissful Extravagance of His Presence!

Honoring and Celebrating the Class of 2022's 196 Graduates of CMM College of Theology Global Schools
By CMM.World CMMTheology.org - June 15, 2022

We are rejoicing!

2024.04.29 19:39 chanthebarista Feast of St. Catherine of Siena

Feast of St. Catherine of Siena
Feast of St. Catherine of Siena
Caterina di Jacopo di Benincasa was an Italian mystic and pious laywoman who engaged in papal and Italian politics through extensive letter-writing and advocacy. Canonized in 1461, she is revered as a saint and as a Doctor of the Church due to her extensive theological authorship. She is also considered to have influenced Italian literature.
Born and raised in Siena, Catherine wanted from an early age to devote herself to God, against the will of her parents. She joined the "mantellates", a group of pious women, primarily widows, informally devoted to Dominican spirituality; later these types of urban pious groups would be formalized as the Third Order of the Dominicans, but not until after Catherine's death. Her influence with Pope Gregory XI played a role in his 1376 decision to leave Avignon for Rome. The Pope then sent Catherine to negotiate peace with the Florentine Republic. After Gregory XI's death in March of 1378, and the conclusion of peace in July 1378, she returned to Siena. She dictated to secretaries her set of spiritual treatises, The Dialogue of Divine Providence.
The Great Schism of the West led Catherine to go to Rome with the pope. She sent numerous letters to princes and cardinals to promote obedience to Pope Urban VI and to defend what she calls the "vessel of the Church". She died on 29 April 1380, exhausted by her rigorous fasting. Urban VI celebrated her funeral and burial in the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome.
Devotion around Catherine of Siena developed rapidly after her death. Pope Pius II canonized her in 1461; she was declared a patron saint of Rome in 1866 by Pope Pius IX, and of Italy, together with Francis of Assisi in 1939 by Pope Pius XII.
She was the second woman to be declared a Doctor of the Church, on 4 October 1970 by Pope Paul VI – only days after Teresa of Ávila. In 1999, Pope John Paul II proclaimed her a Patron Saint of Europe.
Catherine of Siena is one of the outstanding figures of medieval Catholicism due to the strong influence she had in the history of the papacy and her extensive authorship. She was behind the return of the Pope from Avignon to Rome, and then carried out many missions entrusted to her by the pope, something quite rare for a woman in the Middle Ages. Her Dialogue, hundreds of letters, and dozens of prayers also give her a prominent place in the history of Italian literature.
From ‘The Dialogue on Divine Providence’ by Saint Catherine of Siena, Doctor of the Church:
“Eternal God, eternal Trinity, you have made the blood of Christ so precious through his sharing in your divine nature. You are a mystery as deep as the sea; the more I search, the more I find, and the more I find the more I search for you. But I can never be satisfied; what I receive will ever leave me desiring more. When you fill my soul I have an even greater hunger, and I grow more famished for your light. I desire above all to see you, the true light, as you really are.
I have tasted and seen the depth of your mystery and the beauty of your creation with the light of my understanding. I have clothed myself with your likeness and have seen what I shall be. Eternal Father, you have given me a share in your power and the wisdom that Christ claims as his own, and your Holy Spirit has given me the desire to love you. You are my Creator, eternal Trinity, and I am your creature. You have made of me a new creation in the blood of your Son, and I know that you are moved with love at the beauty of your creation, for you have enlightened me.
Eternal Trinity, Godhead, mystery deep as the sea, you could give me no greater gift than the gift of yourself. For you are a fire ever-burning and never consumed, which itself consumes all the selfish love that fills my being. Yes, you are a fire that takes away the coldness, illuminates the mind with its light and causes me to know your truth. By this light, reflected as it were in a mirror, I recognize that you are the highest good, one we can neither comprehend nor fathom. And I know that you are beauty and wisdom itself. The food of angels, you gave yourself to man in the fire of your love. You are the garment which covers our nakedness, and in our hunger you are a satisfying food, for you are sweetness and in you there is no taste of bitterness, O triune God!”
O God, who set Saint Catherine of Siena on fire with divine love in her contemplation of the Lord’s Passion, and her service of your Church, grant, through her intercession, that your people, participating in the mystery of Christ, may ever exult in the revelation of His glory.Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Saint Catherine, pray for us!

2024.04.29 19:31 chanthebarista Feast of St.

2024.04.29 18:35 TheHumanistBoss100 Why did Bernard Cerquiglini say English don't exist and is badly pronounced French?

By the same logic, French is just badly pronounced Latin words, Greek words, Italian words, Dutch words, other West Germanic words, Middle Eastern words (Persian, Aramaic, Arabic)
the French words for South, East. West, and North came from English, the French lost their native Celtic language (Gaulish) because of the Roman empire, French is a quasi-creole language.
60% of words used in Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese have Chinese origins.
languages of Muslim majority countries such as Turkey and Iran are full of Arabic words because it is the religious language of their religion around 35% or 40% of their words have Arabic origins.
It is crazy even the Turkish words for life, the conjunction "and = ve " come from Arabic.
Even Arabic is full of Aramaic words (Islam related words such as prayer, prophet, fasting, mosque...etc), Latin, Greek words, (the words for marriage, law, castle, police, spouse, pencil, language, ) Syriac, Persian words and other languages including some Ethiopian words (hypocrite, small table, railroad, journalist).

2024.04.28 07:13 Kaahiye- Divorced thrice, am I the problem?

🚨DISCLAIMER: ONLY READ IF YOU’RE MATURE
I have been a victim of conniving women. For example, my first potential was a Somali woman whom I dearly adored. Picture this, you’re young, you’re making ~$160k in sales at 19, so naturally you feel like it’s time to start a life with a woman. You start to pursue this woman, and she pursues you back. From dusk til dawn, 24/7, there isn’t a moment her voice doesn’t echo within your ears other than in slumber. She’s a hijabi, steadfast in prayer, and on her way to becoming a xafid. You end up meeting her family and have a deep conversation with her abo about philosophy, business, history, Islam, etc. and eventually, he lets you have her hand in marriage. At this point, you’re excited, ecstatic in fact. Life has been going great for you so far— you’re making more than most people with a degree at 19, you just bought your hooyo a house, and you just bagged the most beautiful woman you’ve ever seen then. You tell your friends in excitement, you thought they’d be happy for you, but it turns out to be the opposite. They’re in utter disbelief. You’re confused, some start laughing, and some have gotten mad at you. You ask them “What’s wrong?” They pull out their phones, BOOM! There are videos of her dealing with Ajnabis, her getting dealt with by multiple people at a time, some in what they call “a telly” which is slang for a hotel room I believe. And some in public places like washrooms, I was even told by my homie “She used to get staircased fam.”
I didn’t even think Somali women were capable of this. I was heartbroken, left useless. I was about to get fired from my performance-based job, I lost 10kg, and I felt like I was getting strangled. I never knew what love was, and this was my introduction to it. She tried telling me she changed and that her sins were forgiven. I wanted to slap her. I called off the marriage, took whatever I gave her (~$15k worth of jewelry), and tried to thug it out. I asked her why she would do this, she said “You’re a great person, handsome, and hardworking. I genuinely loved you.” I started thinking to myself, “How can someone like this truly love a person?” I eventually replied, “A woman like you can never get with the likes of a man like me, and I’m not even that special.“ I wanted to call her the worst of names, but I was blessed with wisdom since young. I’m glad I didn’t lash out, I just kept it pushing.
It was safe to say it was over, I bounced back from this L though (I think). I went searching for a lover again, but I had no luck. The Somali women in my city weren’t it. A quick little background check on one of them and you’ll get first-hand accounts and documents with undeniable proof. After like 7-8 attempts to find a nice Somali girl in the west, I decided to branch out. On a trip to Italy, I fell in love with a beautiful Italian girl. A devoted Christian, a generous woman who radiated innocence. Her family were zealous Christians, Catholics or something like that. Didn’t bother asking what dogma she followed, she married me after 2 months of me non-stop pursuing her.
Now, this is where things get a little weird (mod if this isn’t allowed tell me and I will edit this part out). I started to practice SR and became strict with it. I was told to finish, but I didn’t want to. And that’s when we had our first fight. She said it felt weird for her to be the only one to experience pleasure. It ultimately led to a bunch of events that led me to lose trust in her. I divorced her. And in 15 months, I divorced my second wife, a Balkan woman, due to similar circumstances.
My 3rd wife, an Eritrean woman (Tigre) and I were having a beautiful relationship at first. Everyone was happy. But then I fell on some hard times. Lost a lot of money due to my stupid financial decisions, got into never-ending arguments about dumb stuff, etc. It was like we were married for 10 years and got sick of each other but in reality, it was only 1 year. I lost trust in her after hearing her speak about me with her mother. I never told my mother about my marriage problems and Islamically I thought you aren’t supposed to bring family into it. I truly loved her, which is why I fulfilled all my promises before I let her go.
It seems like women aren’t understandable at all. Always leading me to lose trust in them. I’ve recovered from financial struggle, but now, I’m currently in a state of limbo where I’m messing around with multiple women. I can’t seem to recover from emotional damage. I blame my problems on my first potential wife, am I wrong?
ii tali.

Milan and Legnano: Revival of Orthodoxy in Northern Italy

Milan. Orthodox Parish of St. Ambrose of Mediolanum
The Orthodox Church of St. Ambrose of Mediolanum, on Via Largo Corsia dei Servi in Milano, not far from the monumental Duomo Catholic Cathedral, is open every day. Services are held here daily. There are always people in the temple: someone enters the church to say a short prayer, someone wants to order a prayer service or find an opportunity to baptize a child, for someone is important confession or a conversation with the bishop. In the community, which is fed by Archimandrite Ambrosius (Makar), there are many parishioners with difficult, but in their own way unique and interesting destiny. For many of them, people who had not previously been churchgoers and who had lived far beyond the Apennine Peninsula, Italy has become a second homeland, and the Orthodox Church has become their home.
Archimandrite Ambrosius (Makar)
One such parishioner with whom I was able to speak during a brief trip to Milan (she is also Archimandrite Ambrosius' closest assistant) is Larisa Semenyuk. A native of the Vinnitsa region (Ukraine), a graduate of the Kharkov Pharmaceutical Institute, she went to Italy more than twenty years ago. Larisa married an Italian man and moved from Kiev (where she worked after graduating from the institute) to Rome to start a new life in an unknown country. Unfortunately, due to the difference in mentalities, her family life did not work out: after a few years, a divorce followed, and Larisa had to raise her daughter, six-year-old Laura (baptized Anna), on her own. In Rome, after the successful recognition of her Kharkiv diploma, she worked as a pharmacist in one of the pharmacies, cooperated with local television and helped as a freelance translator for the Ukrainian Consulate. However, in 2007, Larisa again made a fateful decision: together with her daughter, she left the capital for the north of Italy, to Milano.
Larisa Semenyuk
- I think it was God's Providence,” Larissa says. - Of course, in Rome, after a lot of struggling, I managed to settle down financially. It was a great position, I was invited from everywhere. But my meeting, which took place on the feast of Saints Methodius and Cyril, with Archpriest Nicholas Makar (he became Archimandrite Ambrosius later, in 2012), changed a lot, opened my eyes. Unfortunately, my daughter was not very well in Rome, and after her conflict with her father, I finally decided to move. Literally in two weeks I packed my bags and left. To a new place where I had no job and no place to live. Again I had to start from scratch, both secularly and spiritually (despite the fact that I had been attending church for a long time and considered myself a church-going person). Now, looking back, I am once again convinced that I made the right decision. It was for me an opening of the way to God, to faith, to true Christianity. After all, for the sake of the soul and spiritual growth you can sacrifice all material things....
By that time the second parish of the Russian Orthodox Church had already been formed in Milan under the spiritual care of Archpriest Nicholas (the first parish had been founded much earlier through the efforts of Archimandrite Demetrius (Fantini), a native Italian). Archpriest Nicholas himself arrived in Milan on July 14, 2006 from Kiev. Previously he had served in the capital of Ukraine as vice-rector of the Kiev Theological Academy, but God wanted him to begin his missionary and pastoral work in a foreign land. However, Italy is one of the European countries where there are many emigrants from the former Soviet Union, especially from Ukraine and Moldova.

There was nowhere to go: the prayer continued in the open air, despite the cold and rain

For the first year, life was not easy for the parish. The Catholic Church provided the opportunity to serve on Sunday in the Catholic church, but only for two hours. During this time, the Liturgy could be celebrated, but confession and communion had to be done outside the church. By the time the Catholic Mass was to begin in the rented church, the Orthodox priest and parishioners were asked to leave the church and go outside. There was nowhere to go: the prayer continued in the open air, despite the cold and rain. The umbrella was opened, the rector finished the service and gave communion. People saw his sincerity and prayerfulness and reached out to him.
Milano. Church of St.Ambrosius
For some immigrants, meeting a bishop and attending an Orthodox service in northern Italy was a real miracle. The story is told of a woman, Maria, who was walking through the streets of Milano, weeping from grief and suffering, and searching with all her soul for words of consolation, wishing to hear the voice of Orthodox prayer. And on her way, right on the street, she met a priest, Father Nicholas, who was conducting a service at that hour. Maria could not believe her happiness and the grace of God.
- The fact that we are all gathered in this parish is a great merit of our rector, - says Larisa Semenyuk. - He is an extraordinary man, a true servant of Christ, who carries the Gospel and confesses it himself. Fr. Ambrosius is a wonderful priest, preacher and confessor. People are drawn to him like sprouts to a ray of light. This man simply exudes love, and sometimes a word of comfort and support from Father Ambrosius means a lot.
Larissa came to Milano when the parish had already moved to the Catholic Church of St. Vita al Pasquirolo on Via Largo Corsia dei Servi. The congregation pays only for electricity and utilities, so is able to support itself, at least on a basic level. Parish life reflects in no small measure the missionary gift and diligence of the rector. Liturgy is served every day in the church; moreover, services are regularly held in other places where relics of venerated saints are kept. Thus, every Thursday the Akathist is served at the relics of St. Ambrosius of Mediolanus, on Tuesdays - the Akathist at the relics of St. Victor, on Wednesdays - the Akathist at the relics of St. Martyr Natalia. In the Catholic Cathedral on the Piazza del Duomo on Fridays, prayer services are held at the head of St. Thecla the First Martyr. The parish also publishes its own newspaper, the "Ambrosian Herald", and Larisa Semenyuk was one of the founders of the Herald and served as the newspaper's director for several years.
Milan. On the roof of the Cathedral (Duomo)
- Newspaper used to be published once a month-and-a-half, now - three times a year, - says Larisa. - Batyushka writes the introduction and answers questions asked by parishioners Also, we have a youth section, because the education of youth is of great importance to us. Articles in the newspaper are usually published in three languages: Russian, Ukrainian and Italian.
In the parish, there are also open theological courses, on Tuesdays, youth meetings are held; There are also lessons of church singing. There is a Sunday school for children. For several years, there was a school of icon painting at the church, where the artist Lilia Sitchikova imparted her knowledge to the students. Father Ambrosius himself, apart from serving in the Milano temple, was active in opening new parishes in the city's surroundings. Father is often helped by new priests, usually from Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, although they usually come to Italy temporarily, sometimes for a short time.

People were able to form a strong community, permeated with the spirit of mutual help and support

In general, the situation of the parish of St. Ambrosius of Mediolan is now more solid than it was a few years ago. People were able to form a strong community, permeated with the spirit of mutual help and support. It's good to see that the works of believers and, of course, the superior himself bring good fruits, so necessary for all Orthodox people living in Milan and its surroundings.
Milano. Orthodox Parish of Saint Ambrosius of Mediolan
By the way, Larisa Semenyuk had a new obedience more than two years ago: to support a parish in the city of Legnano, 35 kilometers from Milano. Unfortunately, the Lenyan community began to have difficulties; as Larisa herself admits, it was sometimes unbearably difficult. The parish did not have its own premises and did not have a priest; parishioners sometimes gathered at one of the Catholic churches or in the park. They sang church songs, read akathists, and on rare occasions, when the priest came, people confessed and took Communion. But over time, the parish only melted away: some were embarrassed by such meetings, others were afraid of the police. Passersby looked and wondered: some condemned, others sympathized. Even the local newspaper did not ignore the "homeless" Orthodox community, who were looking for shelter in a small Italian town.

I called Father Ambrose and said that I was left alone, and he replied: "Not alone, but with God." After these words, despair receded

– I remember one Sunday I came to the meeting place and saw that no one was there, – Larisa recalls. – Tears started flowing from my eyes. I called Father Ambrose and said that I was left alone, and he replied to me: "Not alone, but with God." After these words, despair receded, I felt the mercy and love of God. The Lord arranged everything: a year later we had a rector and a church for services. The three people who remained in the parish learned the Liturgy and began to sing at the services. Now regular services are held in Legnano on Sundays, there is a choir, and the church has been filled with new parishioners. We are preparing to open a Sunday school for adults and children; we help those in need.
"The Lord is always merciful to us, and this is very clearly seen in the example of the reviving Lenyan parish," Larisa Semenyuk emphasized. In her words, it was impossible not to feel joy, optimism and hope for the mercy of God, which, alas, is sometimes so lacking in difficult and confusing life situations when it seems to us that we are all alone. We must always remember that the Lord actually invisibly walks by our side, giving us His help and blessing.

The story of Larisa Semenyuk was recorded by Sergey Mudrov

Exact Year for Olivetti Lettera 35
Hi! I bought this beauty at an Italian thrift store for €20 and brought it home in bubble wrap and lots of prayers. I was trying to find an exact year aside from just 1970s. I tried the typewriter database and didn’t find much (unless I’m using the site wrong). Any help is appreciated :)
