2024.05.16 17:01 Firarosax WIBTA for calling out my friend for ditching the job I helped her get?

Repost as my other post was removed for some reason 🙄
My friend, I will call her Jane, and I grew up together as children. We were neighbors and best friends, and then I moved away and we lost contact for 20 years. Somehow she found me online 5 years ago and the rest is history.
In the last 5 years, she's never been able to hold onto a job. She appears to have undiagnosed mental health issues, and a big victim complex. She gets fired from every job, and I know this because every time she gets a new job, and every time she gets fired from said job, she posts about it on Facebook and rants to me via text. It's always the fault of the coworkers or her bosses, but it's never her fault, according to her. I've lost track of how many jobs she's gone through.
I work at the local school over the lunch hour. I have been there for a little over 2 years and have a good relationship with my boss. Jane came to me and asked for help on getting a job doing the same thing I do. So I talked to my boss, Jane chatted with her, the boss asked me for a reference, so I gave her a good reference, because she had told me she was doing much better. My mistake was that I believed her. In the end, she was hired.
She showed up on time every day, for every shift for 2 months. And then stopped. She has been a no show, and no communication. My boss asked me if she was okay. I reached out to Jane asking what was up, if she was okay. She confirmed she was fine, and that she would text our boss. Again, I believed her. She never did reach out. My boss has told me and even shown me the texts, that she will text her at 8pm asking her to come in for her shift at 11am, and if she gets a response, it's not until after 2pm, long after the shift is over.
It has been 6 weeks now of her being no show. Now I understand why she was fired from every other job. Every day I see her posting on Facebook "I wish I had a job, I wish someone would give me a chance. I should start my own business!!" I know for a fact she has not been fired (though I'm not sure why), as she is still on the schedule and our boss is still trying to text her every day.
My boss is a wonderful woman and very understanding and caring, but I feel like this is making me look bad as I was the one to recommend her for the job and give her a good reference...
WIBTA if I called her out on this? She's been ignoring all of my texts lately.

2024.05.16 17:00 Turbulent_Pause6428 SpotShotters Might Be Getting The Axe

US lawmakers (4) calling for a probe into the SpotShotters saying theyre racist and target communities of color and that they're not a good use of taxpayer money and question the effectiveness of them. DHS provides federal funds for the SpotShotters currently through a program called Urban Area Security Initiative. "Furthermore, they are seeking answers if funding the gunshot detection system potentially violates Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits recipients of federal financial assistance from discriminating based on race, color and national origin." Citing incidents that happened in Boston 2020-2022, lawmakers allege SpotShotters contributed to "wrongful arrests and increased police stops in almost exclusively black and brown neighborhoods". WPD says they should stay and they're an appropriate use of taxpayer money and they alert them to area of crime when majority of time people don't call 911 (85% of the time apparently). They say that without SpotShotters, they wouldn't know where gunfire originated in the city and wouldn't be able to find crime scenes. WPD says it has "nothing to do with black, brown and latino communities" and if anything, they're showing those communities "they care" because now they're able to respond to communities and "save lives" where they might not have even gotten a call to respond to before. They claim the turnaround time is 1 minute from the time shots ring to activation of the SpotShotters. WPD also alleges that they have 95% accuracy. They wish that the lawmakers who signed the letter calling for the probe would have reached out to them first and they could have schooled them on how beneficial they are.

2024.05.16 16:59 Successful_Hat_3540 Former School Teacher thinking about transitioning into the HVAC industry in Houston TX

I'm 29, former school teacher thinking about going into the HVAC industry. I realized over the years that my degree is worthless. Paid off my student loan debt! I wish I knew about the trade industry before heading to college. I'm tired of the public school system (the pay, disrespectful kids, and curriculum). I also noticed that I don't like desk jobs (too slow and boring). I enjoy working with my hands and learning new things as I go. I just want to provide for my family and do something meaningful in my life.
I have a couple questions:
  1. Is it worth getting into the HVAC industry?
  2. If so, should I get certified at trade school or apply for an apprenticeship?
  3. Any programs or YouTube channels you recommend?
  4. Any advice or suggestions are welcome!

2024.05.16 16:59 Brule2 Advice on target schools very much appreciated!

Hey guys, I recently got my mcat score back and I’m trying to put together my list of schools. I wanted to get some opinions on my app from people outside of my normal circle on whether or not I stand a good chance this cycle. I’m 26yrs old and and an URM-non trad!
App highlights: -3.34 undergrad gpa -3.96 postbacc gpa (35 credit hours all stem) -8,000 hours of Clinical Research (4+ yrs) -250 hours of medical/clinical volunteering -120 hours of non medical volunteering -4 poster presentations -2 abstracts (not first author) -1 first author pub submitted for review -508 MCAT (could have done better but I work 50 hours a week at my hospital) -5 very strong letters of recommendation(obviously that’s subjective) -strong personal statement(again subjective)
Any advice is appreciated! I don’t have any doctor family members or close friends going through this process so it can be helpful to hear from others who know more about everything!
Thanks!

2024.05.16 16:54 Exact-Expression3073 M16A2 or M16A4, what options to buy?

Hey guys, I have been thinking about acquiring an M16A2 or an M16A4. The use case would be to have a gun with irons to use, and maybe use in a CMP match in a non-competitive fashion.
I am wondering what everyone recommends. I have seen the H&R M16A2, the Rock River Arms NMM16A4 and the FN Military Collector M16A4. I would like to go on the cheaper side of things since this is more of a fun gun but would like to also get enough value to have a gun that I can take pride in and have for life.
Let me know what you all think is a good deal, maybe I could score one used from some site somewhere too, let me know!

2024.05.16 16:53 No_Dance5010 Annual Ion Post

Hey All! I know there's horror stories every year about Ion, but is the social scene fun? I got accepted to law school at LSU am contemplating living there. I went to the University of Alabama for undergrad and lived at the Ion/University House there. The reviews & management sucked in Tuscaloosa, but it was a fun place to live. Made a ton of friends, but it was just kinda dirty sometimes. Seems like the same holds true at LSU. I'm a former veteran and GI Bill student so cost isn't really a factor, I just want to live somewhere fun I can make friends and walk to class. We had the nightmare garbage pile up in Tuscaloosa too lol. Thanks for any help or other recommendations.

2024.05.16 16:47 HRJafael Five Points Project, trash disposal on Athol Town Meeting warrant

Five Points Project, trash disposal on Athol Town Meeting warrant
The Finance and Warrant Advisory Committee met Tuesday evening to review the 34-article warrant which will be decided on by the voters at the June 10 Annual Town Meeting. While the committee voted to recommend passage of 33 articles, it delayed a vote on Town Manager Shaun Suhoski’s proposed $28.8 million spending package for FY25. Members wanted another week to review the budget in detail before discussing it with Suhoski.
While most items generated little discussion, some committee members had questions regarding Article 29, which asks voters to approve spending $100,000 from free cash to “augment funds previously voted to acquire land, or temporary or permanent easements” to facilitate what the Five Points Project. The project will reconfigure the intersection that includes Crescent and Bridge streets and Chestnut Hill Avenue and include infrastructure improvements on several side streets in that area.
“As you all know, the town of Athol has been working on that
Five Points Project since about 2017, just before I got here,” Public Works Director Dick Kilhart told the committee. “We’re at the point on the process where this project will advertise for bids by MassDOT on June 29 of this year. One of the last steps in that process is to have those parcels, whether they’re temporary easements or permanent easements.”
Kilhart said that there are some 47 easements in total that need to be secured for the project. He added that MassDOT sent a letter to those property owners from which the town is seeking an easement or easements.
“We’ve had six or seven property owners suggest that they would donate (the easement) back to the town,” he added. “They don’t have to, but we’ve had a handful say they would.” Kilhart added that the contract for undertaking the $9.7 million project will likely be awarded this August, with construction set to begin next spring. The entire cost is being paid for with federal funds.
Another article drew some attention was Article 16, which establishes an FY25 budget for the town’s transfer station of just over $835,000. That figure represents an increase of nearly 44% over the current fiscal year’s budget.
“The transfer station has been running modest deficits for a couple of years,” Suhoski explained. “What’s happened is in the last couple of years the hauling costs have skyrocketed, and we’re updating our fees and raising our fees, but it’s always a year late and a dollar short. So this fiscal year we’re in (FY24), we raised the rates earlier in the year to get ahead of it, and we are. We appear to be around break-even.”
At a Special Town Meeting to be held right before the Annual Town Meeting, Suhoski said the plan is to increase the current transfer station budget by $200,000 in order to erase the deficit resulting from the increased disposal and hauling costs.
“It will be within our revenue” he said. “Then this (FY25) budget is built on that; it resets the budget to the current contract and the projected increases in our hauling contract with WIN (Waste Innovations of North Billerica) for next year, then we’ll re-bid it for fiscal ‘26.” The committee voted to recommend passage of the proposed FY25 budget for the public works, transfer and recycling division, along with a $1.3 million budget for the water division and a nearly $1.6 million spending package for the sewer division.
The FWAC will put the remainder of the town’s FY25 budget - $25.1 million – under a microscope next week. The meeting will be held on Thursday, May 23, 5:30 p.m. in room 21 of the town hall.

2024.05.16 16:43 ngali2424 Buying a Home. Dunedin or Christchurch? Elsewhere?

Looking hard at Dunedin. I like the size, proximity to nature, houses seem to be reasonably priced for what you get instead of the same money for a erect-a-set home in ChCh.
I think I'll like living in Dunedin, but work, social life, schools all factor in. Can you really recommend it, or if you could, would you buy somewhere else?

2024.05.16 16:42 lannisterhearmeroar Tips from a 2-Jurisdiction Passer (UBE and Florida)

Hi everyone!
I know how stressed and anxious you all must feel. I've been there and I get it. I first took the UBE in July 2021 and got a 327. I took the Florida Bar* in February 2024 and passed.
I wasn't a high achieving law student and I didn't graduate from a "top" law school. I also only completed just under 40% of Barbri's course.
Here's how I passed and here's how you can, too:
  1. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE YOUR ESSAYS. It's easy to think, "Oh, I know the law, I'll be able to push out an essay with ease!" That is not the case. You must practice essays under timed conditions to get comfortable with the time limits on the bar exam and to familiarize yourself with the questions.
  2. Don't try to cheat the system. If your bar prep course calls for you to read an outline, actually read it.
  3. WRITE DOWN the black letter law when you get a multiple choice question wrong. I wrote the law in red ink in the margins of my outlines. That way, when I went back to review, I could clearly see that I had gotten that law wrong before and I would get it correct next time around.
  4. Bear in mind that the bar exam is not the end of the world. Yes, it may feel like it, but it's really not. I know great lawyers who have failed the bar twice (or more) and still went on to achieve excellence. In five years, NO ONE will remember whether you pass or failed your first (or second or third) bar exam.
  5. Don't sacrifice your mental health. Go on walks, watch an episode or two of your favorite show, read a good book. Do SOMETHING you enjoy during bar prep so you have something to look forward to at the end of the day and you have something to keep your mind off of this god awful exam.
Best of luck!
Cheers,
u/lannisterhearmeroar
*I had to take the ENTIRE bar exam in FL due to my MBE score expiring, not just the FL specific part.

2024.05.16 16:36 4evrAloneHovercraft Advice on how to get into the wild.

I have lived in Florida my whole life and have been to the Everglades many times on school trips and stuff over the years. I have always wanted to have an adventure out there, get deep into the wilds and see the coolest stuff.
I have a buddy coming next month who wants to do something together that is difficult. He's going through a hard time and kind of needs a reset in his mind and soul.
My goal is to go out before he gets here with my girlfriend and get some first hand experience with the area. Get an idea of where we would go and what we would or could do.
So does anyone have any tour guide recommendations that could accomplis showing me cool areas, teaching me about the area, or recommendations to access cool areas that I could explore without a guide.
Any guidance is appricated.
I guess overall what I'm looking for is guidance on a location where my buddy and I can get out there in to the wilds, see cool stuff (not just mangroves mazes), and not die (but like almost).

Vivid, brave and propulsive, Vuong's poems contend with personal loss, the meaning of family, and the value of joy in a perennially fractured American spirit. The author of the critically acclaimed poetry collection Night Sky with Exit Wounds, winner of the 2016 Whiting Award, the 2017 T. S. Eliot Prize and a 2019 MacArthur fellow, Vuong writes directly to our humanity without losing sight of the current moment. 2024.05.16 16:28 P_0_VV Camping in Skeleton Park

Part 1

The official story is that I hit my head. According to the lawyer I wasn't lucid enough to be a reliable witness, and honestly, I'm starting to believe that might be the truth. It's certainly easier to accept that everything was all just some nightmare.
But if my mind wasn't playing tricks on me, and those fuck-heads didn’t have anything to do with my friend’s disappearance, then there truly is no explanation for what happened.
My therapist and parents both agree. The best way to preserve my sanity is to chalk it all up to my imagination. But I see understanding in their eyes when I recount the events. They want to believe me, I know it. That alone is enough to fuel my doubt.
—
School had begun that September with mourning. I only knew the guy who passed away by face and name. It had happened a month after his graduation, and two months before his first year at Cornell.
During the intercom-ordered moment of silence, I looked out through the classroom. Some were bored, some cried. Many shifted in their seats and were glancing around, like myself, counting every second till the awkwardness would end.
It ended sooner than we thought when a kid with sports goggles a size too big bouncing on his face slammed the door open, obliviously clarifying his attendance.
I'm embarrassed to say that this kid, Aiden, was the only friend I had made in high school until this point. I have a hard time introducing myself to others, but being friends with a prepubescent outcast wasn't making that any easier.
After middle school, my family moved to the small village we live in now. It was a brainless choice because my Mom had found better work, my Dad wanted to be closer to his aging parents, and I desperately wanted out of my old school.
Aiden was the first kid to introduce himself when I transferred last year. I realized he was the token 'weird kid' way too late to make it into any social circles. I know it sounds like I'm a shit friend, but that's the way our relationship turned out. Sure, we told our parents and teachers we were friends, but in reality, it was more a tolerance than friendship.
After all, we didn't have anyone else.
For once, I was thankful for Aiden's lack of awareness. It gave me something to focus on instead of the depressing silence strangling the room.
After realizing his mistake, he whispered an apology, sat down, and pulled out an insect encyclopedia from his book bag. What a nerd.
I distracted myself by reading the book from over his shoulder, and before I knew it, lights were turned back on and class began in earnest.
—
I was able to learn what had happened by eavesdropping on hallway gossip between my classes.
Eight kids, six seniors and two juniors, had found a cave in a region of forest known as Skeleton Park. With that discovery, they decided to add spelunking to their pre-graduation bucket list.
Skeleton Park is the setting of countless local ghost stories, which made it a hot spot for rebellious teen antics. Kids would do everything there: party, drink, smoke, fuck, and everything in between. They even crawled around in caves apparently.
When I first moved, I was a skeptic with no intent of exploring the woods. But one creepy phenomenon always unnerved me. For some reason, animals completely avoided the area.
I initially dismissed this as fiction, like all the other folk tales, until I started walking my dog, Paddy, along the town's bike trail.
The trail runs parallel to the remains of a stone wall outlining Skeleton Park. The first couple of times I walked along it, I didn't notice anything peculiar. But after my Dad first told me about the rumors, I became aware that the area was unnaturally silent. No birds chirped in the trees, no flies buzzing, and no rustling from rodents or any other animals.
Even more surreal, on several occasions I saw deer stop at the wall and walk along it instead of passing through the area. It was like there was an invisible border they refused to cross.
With this context, I'm sure you can understand the reaction of the locals when eight kids entered, and only seven escaped two days later, traumatized and bruised.
Honestly, I was surprised to not have heard about the event over the summer, closer to when it happened. Even more strange though, was how unwilling Aiden was to talk about the incident.
He was the kind of kid who had a strong opinion about everything. On top of that, he was constantly bringing up horror movies, or Creepypastas he had found online. But when I asked his opinion on this summer's events during recess, he only shrugged. Despite the nonchalant response, the look on his face told me that it bothered him. So I didn’t press, and let the subject go.
At the time I'd guessed that he might've had some connection to the kid that went missing. In a way, he did.
—
After an exhausting day of attempts from teachers to console their students with speeches, candy, and exceptional lenience, I was ready to go home.
I expected to find Aidan at the usual spot by the bike racks, where we met each day to walk home. Instead, there was an audience next to the bikes, forming a ring around two disheveled figures.
The flying fists and shouting could only mean one thing, so I kept my distance. Then I heard Aidan yell center, “Fucker!’ and saw a glimpse of his face spitting from a bloody mouth onto the other fighter.
Even though his back was to me, I could tell Aidan’s opponent was easily 5 inches, and 60 pounds heavier than my friend.
Teachers didn’t arrive to break up the fight before the two were on the ground, Aidan mounted with arms up, desperately trying to block blows.
A whistle was blown, and people began running away as my math teacher desperately tried to pry the football player off of Aidan.
He fought back the grown man and was finally pulled away when two more adults rushed to help. The boy was screaming at Aiden with carnal rage.
"You're a fucking liar! How dare you, I'm going to fucking kill you if I ever see you again!"
Aidan was still screaming too, but backed away willingly.
"I'm telling the truth dumbass! You were trespassing! You should be lucky we didn't press charges!"
Aiden looked bad but waved the teachers off whenever they asked if he was OK. Blood poured from his forehead, mouth, and nose. He had at least one black eye.
The other guy, I learned from the crowd, was one of the two juniors who had gone to the cave. He didn't have as many cuts or bruises but was supporting his weight on one leg and his friend's shoulder. Multiple teachers forced him into a chair while they waited for a nurse to arrive.
While the crowd control was distracted, Aiden sneaked over to me and whispered that we needed to get out of there. A couple of minutes later, the two of us were walking home like nothing had ever happened.
It took me a while before I dared to ask Aiden for the full story. He didn't even let me finish my question, which let me know he was more or less his usual self.
"My family inherited the property everyone calls Skeleton Park. It's not haunted, it's not toxic, it's not the home of a satanic sex cult; it's just a piece of forest that's been in my family for a couple of generations."
He spat a dribble of red onto the sidewalk, and I realized I'd never seen Aiden get violent before. We had our share of bullying this past year, but he would always shrug it off and laugh. He wouldn't even try to fight back. We would just get pushed around a bit, and he'd make a quip afterward about the guys' weight or smell.
"Every summer, my dad and I drive around the perimeter putting up trespassing signs, and every year they get ripped down. We get police calls once a month during the summer that somebody came limping out of there with a broken arm or leg, and they have the balls to demand we do something about it. It's not our fault nobody follows the law around here. It's the fucking woods, and it's our private property. What the hell are we even supposed to do?"
To be honest, I hadn't even considered Skeleton Park could've been private property. Though I believed everything Aiden said, I had never seen any signs along the border wall. Embarrassed from being one of those trespassers, I looked away and stayed silent as Aiden continued.
"The area is just too big. There are too many places to enter, and there's no way to block it all off. Though it's not like that'll stop anybody. I feel bad that somebody died, but I'm also a little bit thankful. Maybe now, people will think twice before messing around out there."
We walked in silence until reaching the junction where we would have to part ways. I was tired and wanted to head home, but I also was worried that Aiden would be jumped by some of the seniors if he was alone. It had happened before, and his earlier brawl could've been seen as a declaration of war.
Instead of voicing these concerns, however, I asked if he wanted to play video games at his house. He was surprised by the request but agreed.
I was on edge with every passing car, and every blind turn, but thankfully we weren’t attacked. After a couple more minutes of walking, we made it to Aiden’s house. His Dad was outside watering the garden. He turned, noticing our approach in the corner of his eye, but his planned greeting died in his mouth when he saw the dried blood coating Aiden’s face.
"Holy Shit! what did you do this time?" he exclaimed, running over to inspect his son’s injuries. "Oh, hey Brian," he added, smiling briefly at me before returning to his analysis.
Mr. Eriks was cool for a dad. Aiden never had a bad thing to say about him, and the way he handled everything that happened in the following months would only increase my admiration for him. He'd raised Aiden by himself, and I would've considered him a second friend if he wasn't 40 years older than me.
After determining the damage wasn't all that bad: a cut on Aidan's forehead and lip producing most of the blood, the three of us went inside.
Aiden went upstairs to take a shower, and his dad privately thanked me for walking him home. It didn’t take long for me to cave, and ask Mr. Eriks about the park.
"Yeah, we do own it," he answered while preparing snacks for Aiden and me. " My wife, Aiden's mom, inherited it before she passed away, and then it was signed over to me. To be honest, I don't know too much about it, and she didn't either. We just used it to go camping there sometimes, back before Aiden was born. Now we go together because it reminds us of her."
"Did you ever run into people up there, when you're camping?"
"Yeah, though not in the fall and winter when we usually go. I have the police's local number on speed dial for when it happens. Usually, it's just teens though. Kids tend to run away as soon as they see an adult with a flashlight. Paranormal or not, they know they're not supposed to be there- You staying with us for dinner Brian?"
At this point, I was too curious about the truth of Skeleton Park to leave, so I nodded and said I just needed to check with my parents.
After a phone call with my mom, some pizza rolls, and a couple of rounds of Fortnite, the afternoon stress had mostly faded away.
Me and Aidan were sitting in his room, scrolling Netflix for a slasher film to watch, when I finally asked what I'd been dying to know the entire afternoon.
"So, why was that guy saying you're a liar?"
Aiden chuckled at the question.
"He refused to believe my family owned the property his friend died on."
"Why did you even say anything? You know that just makes them want to beat you up more, right?"
"I'm tired of everybody using our land like a public park, I'm tired of picking up condoms left by people I go to school with, and I'm tired of keeping quiet about it. I tried explaining it to people in middle school. Our first project in fifth grade was a presentation about something important to us, I did mine about the park. Nobody believed me, and it got me socially exiled for the next four years. "
I ignored the urge to explain that there was probably more to his social exile than a get-to-know-you presentation from four years ago.
"That's fair I guess," I said instead. "You're dad says you go camping there."
"Yeah, on three-day weekends, and sometimes longer on breaks. Mostly in the fall and winter when there are less trespassers."
"You don't find it creepy camping there? Even without the trespassers?"
"You mean because of the silence?" Aiden smiled and looked over at me. "Yeah, the rumor about the animals is true as far as I can tell. Sure. It's kind of weird, but in winter it's kind of beautiful too. After a blizzard, there's nothing to disturb the snow, and it's kinda like the whole forest has gone to sleep. With the snow and no animals, it can get so quiet that you hear your own heart beating."
He looked off past me with a feeling of nostalgia, but all I felt was chills.
"I can take you if you want," Aiden added. "I'll have to ask my dad, but I think it would be fun to have another person camp with us."
"I'll think about it," was my way of declining without saying no.
Aiden just shrugged. "Suit yourself. Offer still stands if you ever change your mind."
Much to my annoyance, we weren’t even able to finish the movie. My Mom called, saying she was outside to pick me up an hour into our viewing of The Blair Witch Project.
I went to bed wondering how anyone could feel safe camping in a place like that. After contemplating taking Aidan up on his offer, I concluded there could be nothing that would make me spend the night there. Ironically, it would be less than a week before I changed my mind.
—
Three days later, I was walking Paddy along our usual route when she stopped and looked up at something beyond the stone wall, into Skeleton Park. She stood like a statue, eyes wide and fixated on some invisible thing.
I tried tugging the leash, pulling out a treat, begging, and making all kinds of sounds, but she just stood there. Paddy was a six-year-old golden retriever who easily weighed as much as I did, so I couldn't do much more than wait for her to move.
Suddenly, she began barking wildly at the air.
I tried approaching, but she growled at me, a sound I had never heard from her before, and I was forced to back away.
Before I could even process what was happening. She leaped over the wall and ran at full speed into the woods. It all happened so quickly that I had no time to tighten my grip on the leash.
She sprinted straight into the woods, and I chased after her, but I didn't make it far without tripping on a root hidden among the leaves. My knee was split open by something as I fell, and it took all my strength, fighting past the shock, to get back up. After recovering, I looked in all directions, but couldn't see Paddy anymore. I could only hear the tossing of leaves and branches in the distance.
Then there was nothing. Not a single sound. I'm not sure why I didn't question the sudden silence back then. It wasn't the gradual fade into silence you would expect from something running away. It was as if somebody had just hit a mute button on everything but the wind through the trees.
I don't know, maybe I'm misremembering the details.
Patty's disappearance doesn't matter anyway. We never found her, and dogs don’t live for twenty years, so at this point, we never will.
After taking a moment to recover from the shock, I limped home crying and told my parents what had happened. My Dad called the police because it was the only thing we could think of, but all they did was apologize and recommend we put up posters.
They couldn't do anything even if they wanted to. After all, she ran onto private property.
After that, the last thing I could think to do was call Aiden. His dad promised they could search the park that night, and he also offered to take me for an extended search the following weekend in case they didn’t find anything.
Of course, they didn't find her, just half of a leash wrapped around a branch. At least, that's what my parents told me the Eriks had found, they never actually let me see it.
A day before the trip, the Forecast started predicting snow: Saturday night into Sunday, eight inches, wet.
I probably should've given up then. Instead, I told Aiden this would probably be my only chance to find Paddy, insisting she wouldn't survive in the snow. After making sure with his dad, we continued with the plan and headed out after school Friday night.
—
While it hurts keeping this story in, reliving the memories is almost as painful. So I'm going to take a break writing for now and continue in a day or two. If anyone has a scientific explanation for why animals were avoiding that area, or for my dog's behavior, please let me know.
Thanks for reading, B

Hello Guys,
I want to buy an iPad for school, but I'm not sure whether to get a 13-inch or an 11-inch iPad. Have any of you had experience with both large and small iPads in school and could you recommend something?

2024.05.16 16:15 Ur_Anemone ‘Tradwife’ Content Isn’t Really for Women. It’s for Men Who Want Submissive Wives.

‘Tradwife’ Content Isn’t Really for Women. It’s for Men Who Want Submissive Wives.

For the uninitiated, “A tradwife (short for traditional wife) is a woman,” typically a conservative Christian, “who prefers to take a traditional or ultratraditional role in marriage, including the belief that a woman’s place is in the home,” according to one of the genre’s more popular creators. These conventionally pretty influencers depict themselves cooking elaborate meals, tending to their children and doing housework. Their posts sometimes come with florid captions about the joy and freedom that come from submitting to their husbands, because biblical submission doesn’t connote inferiority. They tend to dress either in 1950s cosplay or barefoot in gauzy, long dresses.
The whole discussion can be a trap because the content itself is meant to be a heightened provocation — some tradwife creators post things that they label as triggering opinions and then say they get so much hate for being stay-at-home moms. But they rely on that dissonance in order to create more engagement (which leads to more clicks and more money).
These posts have a way of painting feminists as haters who resist their true nature and casting career women in opposition to women who don’t work for pay. The reality is that stay-at-home moms and working moms are frequently just the same people at different points in their lives and that content creation is a paying job: My favorite example of this is the tradwife pitching a $5,900 set of courses on how to be a tradwife.
Further, there are tons of reasons any parent might opt to stay home that don’t require buying into tradwife values: Work isn’t always satisfying or well paid, some people want to spend a majority of their time with their kids, and child care is so expensive that it can push a lower-earning parent out of the labor market, to name a few. And as an avowed lover of #cleantok, I have no problem with content about household tasks, but that’s separate from what the tradwives are often cynically pushing. When people criticize the way tradwives troll, they’re very likely to respond that their detractors simply don’t value the hard work of raising children and running a household — when many of their critics value that work tremendously and do it themselves.
That said, I’m not particularly concerned that young women watching TikTok are going to be so influenced by this content that they’ll start fleeing the secular world en masse to submit to their husbands, live on farms and bake aesthetic pies. That’s because young women are increasingly rejecting this specific kind of domestic arrangement.
According to a November 2023 survey from the Survey Center on American Life at the American Enterprise Institute, 61 percent of Gen Z women said they considered themselves feminists, the highest percentage of any generation. And as the Survey Center’s Daniel A. Cox and Kelsey Eyre Hammond explained in April, “Young women are leaving church in unprecedented numbers,” partly because they “are more concerned about the unequal treatment of women in American society and are more suspicious of institutions that uphold traditional social arrangements.” Women are outpacing men in terms of college graduation rates, and prime-age women’s labor force participation is even greater than it was before the Covid pandemic.
Still, some tradwife creators appear to be popular if you look at their follower counts, and they certainly generate a lot of chatter. But I often think: Who is this content really for? Sure, some portion of their followers are probably like-minded women, but a new study from Media Matters made me wonder if the tradwife’s main audience is actually right-leaning men:
Media Matters coded and analyzed 327 recommended videos after exclusively interacting with tradwife content and documented what happened. We found TikTok’s recommendation algorithm rapidly populated our F.Y.P. [For You page] with conspiracy theory content and fearmongering, which made up nearly one-third of all videos served to the F.Y.P.
After interaction with tradwives, the study found, TikTok’s recommendation algorithm also served up “19 videos featuring extremist right-wing media figures,” such as Alex Jones and Nick Fuentes.
(A related idea, put forth by the journalist and internet commentator Max Read in a story by my friend Kathryn Jezer-Morton in The Cut, is that tradwife content is actually for men with something of a Donna Reed fetish: “Maybe it’s a different version of the e-girl phenomenon or the OnlyFans phenomenon. To the extent that I would worry about anything in the future, instead of creating a mass of tradwife women, it feels a lot like you’ll get one or two very famous ones, and a mass of simping male followers.”)

Writing for UnHerd, Mary Harrington recently profiled Lauren Southern, a former right-wing influencer who left her husband and now describes her ultratraditional marriage as abusive. Harrington also spoke to another ex-tradwife, who said that “the men who self-select into these communities are often ‘wayward, antisocial, disagreeable and very, very misogynistic.’”
If there’s anyone to worry about watching and absorbing tradwife content to the letter, I suspect that it’s these men. There are too many stories about fathers and husbands who abuse the power they have over their families and too many stories about the wives and children who flee their coercive control. Instead of continuing to talk about tradwives on TikTok or other social media outlets, even to debunk their limited appeal, we should spend more time elevating the stories of the people who made it out of these circumstances. Unlike the manicured, well-lit vision of idealized submission, stories like West’s have no filter.

2024.05.16 16:11 ziggycomedown What trees for rooftop?

I’m working on a project to grow trees on the rooftop of the compagny i work at. The idea would be to make them grow till the point they are ready to be planted in a garden, we call that a Baumschule (tree school) here in Germany. The rooftop being of course a bit windy, do you have any recommendation on what kind of trees would adapt/accept this environment? I thought of Olive, Lemon, Fig or Maple trees but i’d love some more recommendation.

2024.05.16 16:03 Carravalla Recommendations

Hey everyone, I am trying to get into manga and I wanted the first one to be something similar to my interests. I am interesting in art, fashion, architecture, and autosport. Also, I really really love complex characters, psycho thrillers, and characters that are a bit of a hustlers. Please recommend me some to try out, I also love niche recs so no worries if it’s not a super popular option :)
