My professor showed us this quote a month back, but mentioned he couldn't find where it actually appears in Cicero. Can anyone help me find an actual source for this?
My searches online only led me to blogs and Facebook posts, but none of them had an actual citation pointing me to the work of Cicero (or letter or whatever) where he actually said this.
If it wasn't Cicero who said it, can you point me to the actual source where this is from?

I asked this about ATYCLB but I feel like the question should be asked of Pop as well.
My thoughts::
Pop apologists will say it’s experimental and cohesive - which is true - It’s fun at times, serious at times and packed full of irony. It’s not pop in the way N’sync was its pop in the way that Warhol and Lichtenstein were (heavily referenced in the visuals for the tour), and it was too smart for people.
Bono has had thoughts on this referring to it as a great demo (I’m paraphrasing - if someone has the actual quote would love to see it)
It gets edged out by UF in my book (which is a masterpiece imo) . It’s cohesive the way Achtung baby and JT were, but lower quality (just an opinion) . Probably my 4th or 5th fave u2 album - but was the first album to come out after I became a fan. Also the first tour I saw so has a special place in my heart.
It also can’t be a masterpiece imo because the band has to keep fiddling with it because they seem to know they missed the mark. Unlike JT and AB, I love the new mixes that come out, I love the live tracks off the album, but the band itself seems to abandon it live which again impacts its legacy.
Ironically this view has evolved a lot - as a kid it was my second fave u2 album. As an adult it’s kinda gone closer to the middle of the pile.
Would love to get people’s thoughts. The previous thread made me relisten to ATYCLB in a way I never had before - I’d like to make more of these threads as they seem to bring new things to the surface for me, I hope they do for others too.

My first time posting and I just need to get this off my chest to have a better understanding. So buckle up this is going to be a long post… Names and dates have changed for protection of myself and others.
So back in 2013 I started college. I meet my core group of friends and one in particular had a very single good looking best friend. I was introduced to him. We hit it off! And ended up dating through college. We both graduated and got our degrees. There was a few hiccups that made the relationship rocky. Unfortunately we fell to the hiccups and our relationship ended in 2017. The years to follow I had asked my close friend about how he was doing and hoped all was well. I wished him nothing but the best and hoped he’d find someone to marry and have kids with. I had spoke to him once or twice after him and I had broke up. Once I found out he was dating someone I cut contact with him. By that I mean, I no longer texted him or reached out. We were more acquaintances than anything. I still had my ex’s family on Facebook after all these years. We ended things on good terms. The last thing he said to me was if you need anything give me a call. Well I would ask my friend how he was doing and what not. He told me he found a girl.(2021) I verbatim said I hope he is happy with her and hope she makes him happy. A year later they were engaged, married and had a kid all in less than a year.
I know I may sound odd/crazy for doing this. Hear me out. But when I heard they were expecting I sent them a baby gift addressed to the family. Note: I was also having very traumatic nightmares for like 2 years involving my ex. To the point I never thought they were going to go away. Also keep in mind by this point in our lives I have NOT spoken to or reached out in any way shape or form in nearly 4 years. So I thought for some dumb reason this would help the night mares go away. I boxed it up and mailed it. And I felt some type of weight lift off my shoulders. Why I couldn’t tell ya. Oddly enough nightmares stopped.
Fast forward to present day. I scrolled though my Facebook and notice my ex’s grandpa passed away on his moms side. I’m still friend with his mom on Facebook she is a very sweet kind Lady! She reminds me a lot of my own mom! Our friendship never really ended. We didn’t speak on a daily basis but still knew each other. So when I found out her father had passed away I reached out to her and shared my condolences and sympathy via private message. Note:(my own father has passed 2 years back. I can in a way relate to what she may or may not be feeling.) Everyone experience grief on multiple levels and in different ways. I kept the message very simple and to the point I quote “I’m so sorry to hear about your dad! my heart aches for you! Sending hugs!” Not but 30 min later I get a very unexpected nasty gram from my exes wife. In a very short sentence to sum up the whole “story” of her message is: “you have inserted yourself into our life multiple time on big events and it need to stop and you need to know your place. Have a great night. “ I have never spoken to this woman ever. Nor do I know who she is. And I know I haven’t inserted myself into thier life. she is putting me there and allowing the thought of me to take up space. I didn’t reply. Not because I don’t want to but because I don’t feel like wasting much more time on being nice to someone who doesn’t appreciate it. If you made it this far thanks for coming to by Ted talk.

I (F38) am separated from my husband (M49), with a child (F6) and trying to work it out. I unexpectedly fell pregnant and it’s a big mess. I’m high risk being older and on medication difficult to come off. My husband and I are in shock and have a lot to sort through. Telling our family and friends is going to come with lots of questions and potentially upset people.
A few days ago I told my sister as she is the only person I know who has gone through the emotions of an unplanned pregnancy (she was 19 at the time). I said it’s only early, and even without the other complications I wouldn’t want to tell anyone until the first trimester is over. Please keep it private.
Well… she told my 13yo niece who immediately told my 7yo nephew. “Couldn’t help herself”
I’m pissed at my sister. Kids can’t relied on to keep these things to themselves, it’s not fair on them to try. Pushing aside that our whole family will probably find out in a matter of days now (we live interstate to them all) our 6yo daughter who won’t know she’s getting a very much wanted sibling until first trimester is over. In case of the worst, and because she will tell everyone and sundry before we’re ready.
So I told my sister that she shouldn’t have done that and her response was if I didn’t want her children to know I shouldn’t have told her and why haven’t I told my daughter?
I put the boundary down that because she broke my trust, I won’t be trusting her with any other private information because she’s said she will tell her children. Second, that her kids can’t FaceTime my daughter (they live interstate) until we tell her at 13 weeks, just over a month.
She’s said if I’m going to shame her the I can f*ck off out of her life and now posting on Facebook quotes about the power of stepping back from relationships etc. My nephew has been trying to call constantly repeatedly since he found out. AITAH?

I'm going to be honest, I'm a little bit of a Doubting Thomas on this. They've been saying this album was almost ready since 2017 (when they said it would be out in 2018) and have been playing tracks from it in sets since at least then. There was an earlier album with a different name that was also supposedly almost ready (think this was in 2011?)
But they've got track lengths now and claim the mastering is done, so.. maybe it is real now?

am 9. Juni können alle wahlberechtigten Heidelberger*innen neben dem EU-Parlament auch den Gemeinderat von Heidelberg wählen.
Wir freuen uns sehr darüber, dass die Mods von heidelberg der Community die Möglichkeit geben, sich mit der Kommunalwahl zu beschäftigen.
Wir sind alle ehrenamtlich tätig. Egal ob Berufstätig, Azubis, Studi, Schüler*innen oder Rentner*innen. Bei uns sind Menschen aus den unterschiedlichsten Branchen/Milieus aktiv. Uns war es auch wichtig, diese Vielfalt auf unserer Liste zu repräsentieren. Wir sind stolz darauf, dass viele Aktive aus den Gewerkschaften, Bündnissen und Bewegungen kandidieren.

Unsere Ziele
Das Wahlprogramm ist hier abrufbar.
Heidelberg für alle heißt für uns, dass jede*r in Heidelberg leben darf – unabhängig vom Geldbeutel, Sexualität, Herkunft usw. Soziale Gerechtigkeit ist selbstverständlich unser Markenkern. Doch auch die Klimakrise darf nicht zu kurz kommen. Wir als LINKE denken Klimaschutz immer zusammen mit dem Sozialen: für Menschen mit niedrigen und mittleren Einkommen müssen Klimaschutzmaßnahmen bezahlbar sein.
Neben den Themen Soziales und Klima liegt dieses Mal unser Hauptschwerpunkt bei Wohnen. Wir müssen euch nichts von der Wohnsituation in Heidelberg erzählen. Unser Ziel ist es bedarfsgerecht zu bauen. Aktuell haben 50% der Heidelberger*innen Anspruch auf einen Wohnberechtigungsschein (WBS), weswegen wir immer wieder dieselbe Quote an gefördertem Wohnraum fordern.
Unser Markenzeichen: Grund und Boden gehört in öffentliche Hand. Wir wollen in öffentlicher Hand bauen und verwalten. Kein Verkauf von Grundstücken an Investoren und Spekulanten. Was das konkret bedeutet, haben wir in der Bahnstadt gesehen, in der es kaum gefördertem Wohnraum gibt. Wir möchten auch verstärkt alternative-gemeinwohlorientierte Wohnprojekte, wie die Raumkante in der Südstadt, zukünftig stärker in die Stadtentwicklung involvieren.
Wien ist für uns natürlich ein Vorbild für öffentlichen Wohnungsbau, jedoch müssen wir gar nicht so weit schauen: die Stadt Ulm kauft auch Stück für Stück Boden auf, wodurch sie selbst entscheiden, was gebaut wird. Wir setzen uns seit Jahren dafür ein, dass die letzte große Fläche in Heidelberg, das Patrick-Henry-Village, durch die öffentliche Hand entwickelt wird.
Sanieren statt Abreißen. Dass das geht, sehen wir z.B. an den alten Kasernen in der Südstadt, wo es für Studierende und Azubis (Auszubildendenhaus Römerstraße) schnell bezahlbarer Wohnraum geschaffen wurde.
Wir wollen weiter aktiv Mietwucher und Leerstand bekämpfen. Es gibt bereits eine halbe Stelle bei der Stadt, bei der Leerstand gemeldet werden kann. Des Weiteren wurde unter anderem durch uns auch ein Mietmonitoring in Heidelberg beschlossen. Wir wollen diese Themen weiter in die Öffentlichkeit bringen und die nötigen Stellen hierfür in der Stadtverwaltung ausbauen.
Kennt ihr schon unseren Volksantrag „Mieten runter“? Wir sammeln 40.000 Unterschriften im Land, um die Landesregierung aufzufordern, Maßnahmen für bezahlbaren Wohnraum zu entwickeln. Die Forderungen findet ihr hier.

The Number 47, Synchronicity & the Law of Time Courtney Jamal Dewar, aka Capital STEEZ, came with perfect timing. Jim Carrey told reporters he was so captivated by the 23 enigma even before reading the script that he renamed his production company from "Pit Bull Productions" to "JC23." (Jesus Christ 23?) Oddly enough the first film Carrey worked on with Joel Schumacher his character The Riddler's real name was 'E. Nigma'. According to Carrey, he was reading a book about Psalm 23 when he was first given a copy of the screenplay to review. He said he asked a friend to read the script and "an hour and a half later he was on page 23, circling every 23rd word. That's the kind of thing I want to do to an audience." When he discovered that the first page of the script involved the lead character trying to capture a pit bull, he was "freaked out," given the change in name of his production company. (Pitbull productions) My Nicknames Pitty, short for pitbul (These are just speculations) Also I've gathered others inputs and went down a deep rabbit hole. Mind you, this is just connections that has been gathered over time, but the consistency of certain "coincidences" are interesting to say the least. Just try to piece together the connections even though it may be out of radar due to us living completely different lives.

My first time posting and I just need to get this off my chest to have a better understanding. So buckle up this is going to be a long post… Names and dates have changed for protection of myself and others.
So back in 2013 I started college. I meet my core group of friends and one in particular had a very single good looking best friend. I was introduced to him. We hit it off! And ended up dating through college. We both graduated and got our degrees. There was a few hiccups that made the relationship rocky. Unfortunately we fell to the hiccups and our relationship ended in 2017. The years to follow I had asked my close friend about how he was doing and hoped all was well. I wished him nothing but the best and hoped he’d find someone to marry and have kids with. I had spoke to him once or twice after him and I had broke up. Once I found out he was dating someone I cut contact with him. By that I mean, I no longer texted him or reached out. We were more acquaintances than anything. I still had my ex’s family on Facebook after all these years. We ended things on good terms. The last thing he said to me was if you need anything give me a call. Well I would ask my friend how he was doing and what not. He told me he found a girl.(2021) I verbatim said I hope he is happy with her and hope she makes him happy. A year later they were engaged, married and had a kid all in less than a year.
I know I may sound odd/crazy for doing this. Hear me out. But when I heard they were expecting I sent them a baby gift addressed to the family. Note: I was also having very traumatic nightmares for like 2 years involving my ex. To the point I never thought they were going to go away. Also keep in mind by this point in our lives I have NOT spoken to or reached out in any way shape or form in nearly 4 years. So I thought for some dumb reason this would help the night mares go away. I boxed it up and mailed it. And I felt some type of weight lift off my shoulders. Why I couldn’t tell ya. Oddly enough nightmares stopped.
Fast forward to present day. I scrolled though my Facebook and notice my ex’s grandpa passed away on his moms side. I’m still friend with his mom on Facebook she is a very sweet kind Lady! She reminds me a lot of my own mom! Our friendship never really ended. We didn’t speak on a daily basis but still knew each other. So when I found out her father had passed away I reached out to her and shared my condolences and sympathy via private message. Note:(my own father has passed 2 years back. I can in a way relate to what she may or may not be feeling.) Everyone experience grief on multiple levels and in different ways. I kept the message very simple and to the point I quote “I’m so sorry to hear about your dad! my heart aches for you! Sending hugs!” Not but 30 min later I get a very unexpected nasty gram from my exes wife. In a very short sentence to sum up the whole “story” of her message is: “you have inserted yourself into our life multiple time on big events and it need to stop and you need to know your place. Have a great night. “ I have never spoken to this woman ever. Nor do I know who she is. And I know I haven’t inserted myself into thier life. she is putting me there and allowing the thought of me to take up space. I didn’t reply. Not because I don’t want to but because I don’t feel like wasting much more time on being nice to someone who doesn’t appreciate it. If you made it this far thanks for coming to by Ted talk.

So the day finally came when I saw Ben live in flesh and blood in front of my eyes for two nights straight. Only now when a couple of days have passed, I am able to comprehend as to what just happened.
Okay, so to put things into perspective, I've been an admirer of his craft since the Every Kingdom days, and like most of the fans out there, I absolutely love Every Kingdom and I Forget Where We Where along with the Burgh Island EP. It's the quintessential Ben Howard stuff that you recommend people to listen.
So the song which fueled my utmost devotion towards Ben was Conrad like many others, more so because me and my ex used to listen to that song together through our drives and at home and everywhere else cause we were in a situation where we understood that "we will never be the change to the whether and the sea" and I knew that, but still "I loved her with the good and the careless in me" as Ben felt too I guess. So when the relationship did end, I followed the words of Ben and "built a world without her love, and I built it mean" where "I Forgot Where We Where" and my days were reduced to "ten Marlboro cigarettes that I rolled the butts into the bottle tops and stared at the sea until my eyes would eventually have enough for the day".
So when the Is It? tour was announced and I got to know that Ben is going to be in my country, my elation knew no bounds, because it was a person who knew how I've felt and with whose words I've spent the most time with. But there rose my concern, and like that of many others, that what if he doesn't play more from the EK and IFWWW days anymore, the songs that have stayed with me the most. No doubt, I absolutely loved Days of Lantana and Couldn't make it up and Moonraker and others from the album. And I guess, a part of me knew that he probably doesn't want to play the old stuff because he doesn't feel the same way about them anymore.
Anyways, with a lot of excitement I went to the gig and Ben started with Couldn't make it up and Life in the time, and it blew the fuck out of my ears. I have listened to a lot of big bands live and I loved them to bits, but the sound of Ben and his guitars was something I have never seen or experienced before live and I was absolutely mesmerized with the tracks following from Is It? to Collections to Noonday. But obviously everyone has their favorites and lot of them were requesting for the old stuff like Esmeralda and End of the affair. And then in that moment, Ben started to speak, he said and I quote "It's quite difficult to live through so many forms of yourself, working through records. Cause you forget a lot, tunings and people, mostly tunings". And I stood there for a moment, thinking about it, and it struck me that we humans resist change so much, when change is the most natural thing. And like all of us Ben has changed too, and for the good. This is a man who has gone from feeling "Blinded, now I see that death moves amongst us" to saying "to be by your side I'd walk the Nile twice". And this is a story of triumph. The Ben of now is happy and looks full of hope and it's so damn heartening to see that. And make no mistake, his skills and craft haven't gone down, but have only evolved. He poured his heart and soul into every song from is it? and I can proudly say that it's the best album by Ben for me going forward. The only thing I would tell anyone who loves the old stuff from Ben and not the new ones is to stop resisting the change and then everyone will be able to see how good the new stuff is. And to all the people who are going to see him in the coming days, it's a request from me to cheer the loudest for the songs from is it? because he's Ben Howard, the man who said 'I will become what I deserve' and he deserves every fucking bit of happiness like everyone of us and feel the 'jubilation in the faint june shine!'
Thank you for the memories Ben and the band. The best shows I ever attended. And for restoring the faith in me that changes eventually happen for the best.

I don't have the whole story here, just some key references - and can anyone add to this? Once again, the topic of "Gaucho" sounding like a Jarrett song came up on this sub - with someone commenting "(Jarrett) had to fight for (songwriting credit)." Really, though, fight for it? I myself have never heard that, and it does make D & W sound like thieving assholes, right? Then again, we're here at Shitpost Central, steelydan, so what else to expect I suppose. I do know that they didn't initially credit him, and then, in a March 1st '81 interview with DF & WB in Musician magazine (which I'll quote/link to below), the interviewer brings up the songs' similarity and they reluctantly(?) acknowledge it. At some point thereafter, Jarrett requested co-writing credit and they didn't hesitate to give it to him. Like I mentioned recently: though I do agree they should've either given him credit in advance or finished writing the song without the heavy Jarrett "influence", I don't think it makes the song inherently unoriginal, because Jarrett's influence was only on part of the composition, and it's not the best part of the composition. The more advanced, original sounding part - which sounds like classic DF at his genius-level, compositional best - doesn't recall Jarrett's tune at all.
