The following account comes from the magazine Evidencia OVNI (No.1) by way of Puerto Rican ufologist Jorge Martin, and was later translated and published in the 1997 V42N4 issue of Flying Saucer Review. The text below is the back and forth interview conducted and translated as it appears in the FSR edition. Note: The comments 'G.C.' within this post refer to FSR editor Gordon Creighton.
We learned recently from a Sr. Luis T., Rodriguez of Sabana Grande that, according to an informant known to him, this informant had witnessed the kidnapping of a man near Tallaboa, between the towns of Ponce and Peñuelas, in the southern part of the Island of Puerto Rico.
This informant, named Héctor Maldonado, a resident of Ponce, was a night-time employee of a local firm. After very great difficulty, due to his pronounced evasiveness, I did finally manage to contact this man Maldonado (aged 39, resident on Calle Isabel, Ponce), and gradually extract from him the details of his story and get him to take me to the spot where it had happened. It had been at about 9.00 o'clock one morning in November 1979, and he was out jogging near the saltings and mangrove thickets of Ponce Salt, near Tallaboa, and right by the sea, on the southern coast of Puerto Rico Island.
He said: "I chanced to turn round suddenly, and there were five or six strange beings there, between 5 ft and 6ft tall, thin, with bald, biggish heads, big almond-shaped glowing eyes - just as though lit up with bright lights - not in the slightest bit normal! It was broad daylight, so it was not a case of some sort of light reflected in their eyes in the way it is at night with animal eyes. That light came from inside their eyes!" (He does not give the actual colour -G.C.)
"They had thin necks and long arms, and long hands and fingers. I didn't note how many fingers - I was too shaken to notice it. The strangest thing was that their skin was a greyish-blue colour. I couldn't see any clothing on them - unless that greyish-blue stuff was itself something that covered their entire body, but to me they looked naked. I spotted no sign of any genitals at any time, though to be honest I didn't fix my attention specially on that.“
"The astonishing thing was that they had got hold of a man and were taking him off. He was a human, olive-skinned, about 5ft 9 in height, with lank black hair, and apparently unconscious. He looked as if he were petrified, with his eyes closed, and they had got hold of him by the armpits. They appeared to be very strong, because two of them were lifting him off the ground with ease. He wasn't even dragging his feet; I didn't get a clear view of his face, because I could only see him from the side. "Behind the beings, above the sea, a bit beyond the mangroves, there was a machine hanging stationary in the air. It looked more or less oval in shape, with a cupola on top, and its sides sort of fluted or grooved, and on the top it had a narrow, curved, projection with lots of lights - just like a garland of lights that you see at Christmas time. The thing was of a silvery metallic colour, and big - really big. And just hanging there in the air, not making a sound."
"Suddenly one of them, who had been kneeling and seemed to be looking at something on the ground, got up and signed to me, and then I felt something as if it were inside my mind, like a voice, - but a bit strange - different from that - coming seemingly from that being. And I heard him say jestingly to the others: 'LOOK AT THAT ONE - HOW HE'S RUNNING'." (The eyewitness had in fact not stopped jogging).
"AND THEN THE BEING HIMSELF STARTED RUNNING, AND MAKING FUN OF ME. Then I got the impression that he said: 'Now - just look how I run,' and he started moving at a quite fantastic speed. Then he halted beside the others, and in my mind I heard him say to them 'WE'LL TAKE HIM TOO. The others replied something like: 'Not him - leave him alone'. ... Something like that. When he was mocking me he had got great big teeth - and pointed ones — like a shark's teeth.” (See the sketch based on the eyewitness's description).

"Next", he said, "That one that had laughed at me and wanted to take me, gestured towards me with his hand and threw something like a great big drop of some sort of cold liquid, which hit me on the chest. Where that had hit me, I at once began to feel very queer - as though my body was swelling up and I was feeling stiff. Like a sort of cramp. But I was so scared that I forced myself to keep on running. And, as I went on, that queer feeling began to lessen, and so I was able to go on.”
"And when I did look back, I saw that they were taking the man towards that craft. I just carried on running, and didn't want to look back, and when I did finally look back next, the craft, and they and the man were all gone. And I just carried on running until I'd got right away from there. "I was terrified. And I didn't tell a soul about it. I was so scared, and felt sure that nobody would believe me. Who was going to believe a story like that? They'd say I was mad, and I wasn't going to expose myself to that, No Señor!"
We asked Maldonado to give us more details of the man they were carrying off.
He said: "Well, he was olive-skinned, with black hair. I don't think he would have been more than about 30. Slim. He was wearing a two-piece suit, with a check pattern, and of a creamy sort of shade. But I didn't get a clear view of his face because - as I've told you - he was sideways on to me all the time. And yes - the man was unconscious or dead. I imagine unconscious".
We asked: "Didn't you notify the Police about what you had seen?"
"No", he replied. "As I've already told you, I was very scared. I didn't think they would believe me. For a long time I have felt bad about what might have happened to that chap that they were taking, because I've no doubt whatsoever that they were indeed taking him. But my fear was too great, and I did nothing. For a long time I carried in my mind the scene of what happened. I couldn't stop thinking about it. But bit by bit I got control of myself and was able to bear it".
I asked: "Did you continue to go jogging at that place?"
He replied: "For a long time I didn't go back there, but after three years, when I was feeling calmer, I did go back there. "One day, I was running there again, on that same sector, and I fell down suddenly, because there was a change of level in the soil there. And when I looked to see the cause, I perceived that the soil there had sunk, forming a perfect circle about 100ft. in diameter. It looked just as though something large and heavy had rested there. I was astonished to see that, but I also noticed that over on the further edge of the circle some individuals with a red minibus belonging to the Civil Defence Dept. were checking the circle. That was around 1982 or May 1983. It's near the place on the salt-flats where they spread out the shrimps in the sun.”
"After that, I lingered there for a while, and talked to those people, and to others, all of whom had seen UFOs thereabouts. "Furthermore, when I read of other things that you had investigated and that you had published previously in the review ENIGMA, showing more or less similar beings that have been seen in the Island and in other places, by other people, then I realized that I wasn't the only one to have seen them.”
"It's true, and for some reason the Governments hide it and cover it up. But as I see it, there's far too much going on, and in the end they are going to have to give some sort of explanation and say what it is that is going on."

2024.05.19 17:25 jimmyblendface 2020 Civic Auto Stop Start problem

I recently (2 weeks ago) bought a used 2020 Civic, low mileage, from a Honda dealerhip about 20 miles away from me.
On the first drive everything seemed to be all in order, tried the Auto Stop Start the first couple of times I was at the lights, just to check it worked, which it did. I rarely use the feature otherwise and generally just keep the clutch down when at lights or turn it off.
The next day after normal driving the S/S feature wasn't working and it was displaying a battery sign along with the S/S icon in the center of the dash.
Oviously I wanted to get this seen to so I arranged a date with the dealership and drove the 40 minutes to drop it off, to pick up the next day.
They called the next day saying the battery had been checked charged overnight and that sometimes if it's been sitting for ages without being driven or has been doing only short trips it can drain, and the S/S will turn itself off to save battery. My battery had been at 75% apparantely. They said it was now in working order and the stop/starrt was working correctly. So I go and pick it up, at my own time and expense. Test it a few times on the way home and its working fine. Cool.
Next day, having driven for half an hour or so, air con on moderate and music on, I stop at the lights and again its not working and showing the same icon. Try it a few more times when stopped and again same issue.
First of all, how much of an issue is this? Obviously there is something wrong with the battery or the alternator, and the garage has already tried to fix it once and have failed clearly.
Would I be overreacting in rejecting the vehicle over an issue like this? My reason for chosing a newish Honda was to avoid any of these sorts of issues and to have a problem start on day one leaves a bitter taste. Its obviously not a big deal in the immediate term but if this indicates a bigger problem with the battery then I'd rather walk away and get a different vehicle while I'm still protected under the CRA. Just feel a bit fleeced having such a basic function fail to work as soon as I've got the car.
Just wondering what the general consensus here would be if you bought a car with this issue?

2024.05.19 17:00 mammoth12345 AE2 - I need help with auto crafting

So I'm really new to AE2, its my first time using it and im playing ATM 9.
It confuses the shit out of me because im stupid, and I need a bit of help setting up the autocrafter. What I would like for it to do is to infinitely create uranium ingots from uranium essence, to ensure my reactors stay powered without me having to grab the essence from my botany pots, craft the ingots, and insert them into my fuel chests.
So far I've managed to set it up so that the ingredients are coming in, and the product is coming out, but i have to tell it to start crafting manually each time, and it has to have the ingredients there to start crafting.
Is there a way to make it so when there's enough ingredients, it will just craft the recipe?
any help or tips is much appreciated, again I'm really new to this mod so please go easy with any explanations. if you think there's a better mod i could be using to achieve my goal, feel free to let me know :)

I realized my title could be misread, what I really mean was: Architecture school feels outdated and architecture in it feels romanticized?
I'll just start off by saying I'm pretty young, 20, and I've been in a drafting design firm in Florida for just over 3 years now. I've done residential and very small amounts of commercial now so I'm confident in my ability to design a nice looking house.
I just started my architecture classes in spring and it's the most miserable experience. It feels like everyone in my class, teachers and students combined, have this mysticism and romanticization of architecture. Maybe it's just me or maybe it's because I've been working in the field for a while, but it all just seems so ridiculous. I can design a nice house and I want to learn how to design commercial, but the things they're asking of me feels nonsensical.
Then the models, the models are the bane of my life. I'm not much of an arts and crafts guy, so these models take so long for me to do. There's a laser cutter at the school but it's 50 minutes to an hour away which makes it near impossible to go during the week when I'm working 20 to 40 hours just to have any kind of money. I've been doing and working with AutoCAD my entire time working there, we switched from R14 to 2015 while I was working there. I feel incredibly comfortable designing in it, so to have to switch to physically drawing plans feels so tedious. I know drawing by hand is an important tool to learn, but it feels like their importance on physical and digital drawing/designing should be flipped. It's been years since before I was even born that physically drawing plans was the normal way to do things.
I dunno, I was just wondering if this was the normal experience? The amount of all-nighters I've need to do has jumped lime 800% since I've started this course and it feels like it's draining the life of me. Is this the normal school experience, is this really what architecture is like and my firm is an exception, and any advice you could give to a mentally dying student?

What is the general consensus on required laptop hardware for managing a large portfolio? 100+ positions.
I recently installed TWS on a fresh Debian installation. The hardware specs were a middle of the road i5, 16 GB of RAM, and an M.2 SSD. Not stellar, but not terrible either. Upon loading TWS, it would freeze after loading a portion of the default screen.
I'm inclined to believe this is an issue with either using Linux as the base OS or TWS itself. Note, I tried using both the auto-updating version, and non auto-updating - as well as the beta/ nightly version. Whereas I have no issues using the mobile app on an M1 iPad Air, as well as an old 8th generation iPad.
I'm looking at investing in a new MBP with the Pro Max (highest end) CPU and 128 GB of RAM.
What is the general consensus on hardware requirements for managing large (100+ positions) portfolios?
I have access to Supermicro multi-cpu (Opteron) motherboards if need be. I'd like a portable system, but if it requires higher end hardware than is available for mobile systems, I'll build a custom rig.
Note, I use to build and manage the trading PC's for one of the largest firms in TO over a decade back, AUM of 40+ billion. Back then we would spend in excess of 10k per machine on hardware, so I have some background into the requirements and implementation side of things.

New arrivant decided to etablished themselves in an old farm close to the local town and become farmer.
First objectif :

Mechanics

Upgrade house by collecting enough scavenging material (metal, stone, tape, glue, etc…) and paid the town entrepreneur to do so.
Possibility to upgrade town by the same way : drinkable water ; defense ; radio tower ; museum ; school ; etc…
Defend home from wild attack (animal, raiders, super mutant, ect…) with gun and eventually autonomous turrets (later game) and engage mercenary to defed (late game). The more the player amass money, the more frequent the attack will be.
Scavenger will gossip about big event and some minor event that occurred in the settlement that you participated in.
Settlement gestion :

Happiness (Festival ? ; npc request ; …)
Sanitaire (Water access)
Defense (Millitia ; autonomous turrets ; dogs)

Thirst gestion.
Can recolt skin, meat (and bones?) of wild animal.

Carrying can either be by weight of the item or by the number of item player can carry.

Can buy stimpack and radaway from settlement healer or from scavenger in the town (for a more expensive price). When reach high enough relationship with healer, he will give you the recipe for both. The only way to regain life and get rid of radiation (sleep and food don’t heal). (Sickness (malus) if health too low for too long?)
Gain radiation by drinking
The main fight zone of the game is the town. In the edge : house, a small commerce (tiny to small dungeon) ; Closer to the center: Office, appartement (small to medium dungeon) ; Center : Commercial center, sky scrapper, (subway?) (normal to big dungeon.
Some raiders and some synth will drop their weapons and beg for their life if the health is low enough. Spare enough of them and you will receive letter from either : the minuteman ; the brotherhood or the railroad to thank you for sending more recruit their way. Two or three will regularly visit town.

Relationship

Can get a dog as a perm. Companion (can choose race?) (Can breed you dog and gitf puppy to the settlement?)
Npc relationship possible bonus :

- (Sometime) help on the farm

Some npc love receving gift other will be inconfortable with it. But after (wedding?) no adverse reaction to receive gift.

If player can have kid; if spouse is a women, player will have to catter to their wife food craving (nothing with rare item) or face a penality in the relationship. If player is a women ; Malus in health, energy, slower deplacement and carrying capacity decrease the more and more the pregnancy advance. New choice of answer : pissed as fuck and hormonal. Spouse will insist to become a companion until end of pregnancy
Kid will go to school (town upgrade) for three day, help on the farm for three other and have a free day.

Attempt murder on the player by the mayor once town upgrade and settler relationship high enough. Scare that they would lose their place to you to engage mercenary or try to poison you to keep their place. Force the mercenary to tell you who paid them or find a note on one of them or talk to the mayor after the attack (will be surprise to see you alive). You can :
- Bring him to justice and let the settler decide of his fate. (Will be possible to talk to him in prison)
- Execute him (will have to prove to the settler that this was auto-defense. Lose some relationship with settler)

Let him life (will leave town. Grateful to be alive but bitter to have lose his title)

Result : Become mayor next election!
Raides have created a camp close to the settlement. Remove them. Player will find two npc in cage. You can :

Let them there

-Help them out
-Kill them inside the cage
Result :

They die
Will eventually die of thirsth
Will come to the town and become settlers

You’ve find a mister handy (or miss nanny) in the town. Why not fix them?
Result : They will propose you to help you on the farm. Accept and they’ll start working the day after. Refuse and they’ll becom settler. (Possibility to make them synth when relationship high enough?)

Find a sorry scene : deadraiders; a dead deathclaw; a nest with two crushed egg a one intact egg. You can :

Sell the egg
Eat the egg

-Hatch the egg

Bost in one stat? Level upgrade?
Get a baby deathclaw. Will be able to switch with you dog as perm companion. (If romanced the deathclaw, you spouse will leave with the hachtling for a season. When back the hatchling statut will change from animal to children and gain dialogue)

The river close to your house is drying. Discover the reason. The river goes into a cavern and to a lake.

There’s a thirsthy and hungry homeless man at the edge of the settlement. You can :
-Give him food and water for a week

-They get back on their feet and eventually open an inn in town. Will sometime offer you free drink an talk to you about stranger he hepled by following your exemple.
-They will slowly die an talk with more and more difficulty. (Which led to kill him)
-Burry him and make a small tomb or let him root there. Will get eaten by wild animal.

End game quest :
The vault now trust you enough to tell you about the G.E.C.K.S. The received one that ended up defective and never received the second. They want you to go to the vault building in the center of the town and see if you can find any information about it. Vault tower will be the most difficult dungeon in the game. Beat it to find that the G.E.C.K.S was sent to a second vault that was either unfinished or an experimentation. Go the the vault ## to discover that the G.E.C.K.S had taken some damage from bad condition and bad storage. Get all the item to fix it and either fix it yourself (no money cost) or ask to a vault scientist to fix it (+++ money cost)
Result : The map surrounding your house, the vault and the town will become more and more green with beautiful tree (Process will take ### day or month or years)

I'm hoping to submit to a competition in which the prize is feedback from an agent. In the submission guidelines they ask for a cover letter, and I initially took this as more of a standard cover letter but after feedback from an author friend, they suggested they might be looking for a traditional query. My autistic brain struggles with reading between the lines sometimes, so I emailed them to clarify and the standard query is what they're after.
Just for context, my manuscript isn't completely finished but there's nothing in the guidelines to suggest it needs to be finished to apply. If anyone has any feedback or insight they could offer me, I'd be super grateful! Thank you :)

First 300
The smoke alarm cuts through the quiet of the flat like an air raid siren, interrupting my final rehearsal of the speech I’ve been planning for weeks. I rush across the living room, grabbing a tea towel from the neatly folded pile and frantically wave it under the screaming white box. The noise continues to pierce through me, my short arms useless in the face of the high ceilings. I pull a stack of my cookbooks from the counter and lay them on the floor.
‘Sorry,’ I mutter, stepping onto Marco Pierre White’s face with my bare feet.
With the beeping finally silenced, I have to contend with the source of the smoke. A trickle of grey leaks from the top of the oven, and I send a silent prayer to the universe that my bread is salvageable. I need tonight to go well.
Pulling down the silver handle, a thick cloud billows out from inside, fogging up my glasses and filling the space with the scent of scorched sourdough. I haphazardly wrap the tea towel around my hands and grab the searing hot tin from the oven, the thin material barely enough to keep my hands from suffering the same fate as my poor bread with its charcoal-coloured crust.
I throw the whole thing into the sink, tears pricking at the edges of my eyes, though that could just be from the smoke that’s hanging around the kitchen like I’m in Victorian London rather than 21st Century Manchester. Harrison will be pissed off if he comes back to a smog infested flat, so there’s no time to cry over burned bread. Instead, I crack open the windows to the maximum amount possible on the 27th floor without being a suicide risk and head out to buy a replacement loaf.
When I get home, the flat is back to normal, the neat surfaces and sterile black furniture all looking exactly as it should. I close the window, hoping that heat from the rest of the cooking will ward away the March chill that has seeped in.
