EXPLORATION
  • Juanicipio:
    • Infill drilling at Juanicipio continued in Q1 2024 from underground aimed at upgrading mineralization in areas expected to be mined in the near to mid-term. During Q1 2024, 11,271 metres were drilled from underground.
    • Surface drilling focused on expanding and upgrading the deeper zones and broader regional exploration started in April 2024.
    • During 2024, Juanicipio plans to drill a total of 50,000 metres, with 33,000 metres from underground and 17,000 metres from surface.
  • Deer Trail Project, Utah:
    • On May 29, 2023 MAG started a Phase 3 drilling program focused on up to three porphyry “hub” target areas thought to be the source of the manto, skarn, epithermal mineralization and extensive alteration throughout the project area including that at the Deer Trail and Carissa zones. In late 2023 an early onset of winter snowfall impacted the commencement of the third porphyry “hub” target, which is now expected to be drilled in 2024. The two completed “hub” holes to date total 2,738 metres. Both holes intercepted alteration and mineralization in line with what is expected on the edges of porphyry systems. Follow-up drill targets are planned for summer 2024.
    • With the early onset of snowfall, Phase 4 drilling focussed on lower elevations commenced in the last quarter of 2023 and continued through Q1 2024, aimed at offsetting the Carissa discovery and testing other high-potential targets in the Deer Trail mine area. During Q1 2024, 1,208 metres were drilled at Carissa with results pending.
  • Larder Project, Ontario:
    • Drilling targeting Cheminis and Bear totalled 5,391 metres in Q1 2024. Targets tested include down plunge extension of the high-grade double knuckle at the Bear East zone and extending the Cheminis south mine sequence down plunge.
    • Cheminis Update: Follow-up drilling of the Cheminis South Cadillac-Larder Break (“CLD”) mine sequence down plunge is planned to test below the most recent intercepts. Hole GAT-24-026 intersected a new zone on the north side of the CLB within a fuchsite-silica-albite altered komatiite grading 3.9 g/t gold over 16 metres with 2 higher grade shoots associated with albite dykes (see Table 1 below).
    • Bear Update: Utilizing the updated model and incorporating the updated data from recent drilling, the Bear East zone was successfully extended down plunge by up to 1,100 metres depth. Hole GAT-24-024NB intersected gold mineralization on both sides of the CLB which confirms the presence of either another structural trap at depth or the continuation of the “double knuckle” zone at surface. Gold mineralization intersected on the north zone included 9.4 g/t gold over 2.2 metres within a strongly altered komatiite with syenite intrusions and 1.6 g/t gold over 4.2 metres on the south zone within the south iron-rich volcanics (see Table 1 below). Bear East remains open in all directions.

https://preview.redd.it/9txq8snzze0d1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=0089cf57573e8834bdb641cf9e055619e6f6c5b2
(1) Equivalent silver head grades have been calculated using the following price assumptions to translate gold, lead and zinc to “equivalent” silver head grade: $23/oz silver, $1,950/oz gold, $0.95/lb lead and $1.15/lb zinc (Q1 2023: $21.85/oz silver, $1,775/oz gold, $0.915/lb lead and $1.30/lb zinc).
(2) Equivalent silver payable ounces have been calculated using realized price assumptions to translate gold, lead and zinc to “equivalent” silver payable ounces (metal quantity, multiplied by metal price, divided by silver price). Q1 2024 realized prices of $23.73/oz silver, $2,112.27/oz gold, $0.92/lb lead and $1.08/lb zinc (Q1 2023 realized prices of $22.93/oz silver, $1,959.50/oz gold, $0.94/lb lead and $1.43/lb zinc).
During the three months ended March 31, 2024 a total of 325,081 tonnes of ore were mined. This represents an increase of 45% over Q1 2023. Increases in mined tonnages at Juanicipio have been driven by the operational ramp up of the mine towards steady state targets.
During the three months ended March 31, 2024 a total of 325,683 tonnes of ore were processed through the Juanicipio plant; no ore was processed at the nearby Fresnillo and Saucito processing plants (100% owned by Fresnillo). This represents an increase of 47% over Q1 2023. The increase in milled tonnage has been driven by the Juanicipio mill commissioning and operational ramp up to nameplate capacity over the course of 2023.
The silver head grade and equivalent silver head grade for the ore processed in the three months ended March 31, 2024 was 476 g/t and 713 g/t, respectively (three months ended March 31, 2023: 363 g/t and 530 g/t, respectively). Head grades in Q1 2023 were lower as low-grade commissioning stockpiles were processed through the Juanicipio plant. Silver metallurgical recovery during Q1 2024 was 89.1% (Q1 2023: 87.0%) reflecting ongoing optimizations in the processing plant.
The following table provides a summary of the total cash costs 5 and all-in sustaining costs 5 (“AISC”) of Juanicipio for the three months ended March 31, 2024, and 2023.

Sales increased by $72,207 during the three months ended March 31, 2024, mainly due to 179% higher metal volumes and 2% higher realized metal prices.
Offsetting higher sales was higher production cost ($9,409) which was driven by higher sales and operational ramp-up in mining and processing, including $3,545 in inventory movements, and higher depreciation ($14,083) as the Juanicipio mill achieved commercial production and commenced depreciating the processing facility and associated equipment in June 2023. Operating margin increased by 21% to 52%, mainly due to operational leverage and the lower reliance on the nearby Fresnillo and Saucito processing facilities.
Other expenses increased by $2,159 mainly as a result of higher extraordinary mining and other duties ($872) in relation to higher precious metal revenues from the sale of concentrates and higher consulting and administrative expenses ($2,690) as an operator services agreement became effective upon initiation of commercial production (the “Operator Services Agreement”), offset by lower exchange losses and other costs ($1,566).
Taxes increased by $20,980 impacted by higher taxable profits generated during Q1 2024, and non-cash deferred tax credits related to the commencement of use of plant and equipment in Q1 2023.

2024.05.13 23:16 cjoe02 Situation with excess luggage and missed flight

I recently took a flight to Guam in order to transit to the Philippines. I was able to check in my 29 kg luggage for free due to my status. Unfortunately my flight to Guam was delayed and I missed my Manila flight as a result. I was kindly given vouchers for accommodation and taxi at Guam, and was re-booked for Manila the next morning through Philippine Airlines. I thought of my overweight luggage and asked the local United staff (and even PA staff) on how I could go about checking it in through Philippine Airlines, should a fee arise. They told me that I could send a receipt of the excess fee to online customer support for reimbursement, so on the next day, I paid $175 to get it through. Now when I contacted the online customer support, they said the fee could not be reimbursed due to there being no evidence of me paying an initial excess fee before Guam. Even after telling them I did not have to pay for it on the flight to Guam due to my status, they still said they couldn't process the refund, and to ask Philippine Airlines to refund me instead. They also referred me to one part of the United website where complaints are lodged, so I also lodged a complaint there. As of now, I'm just wondering how can I get my money back. It's quite ironic how my status is one cause for me not getting a refund. Anyone been through anything like this?

I have been blessed to have had 3 OMT cars in my life. My first car was Old Man Tan and I guess it made me love the color on cars. I bought a 1983 Cadillac Coupe DeVille as my first car by cashing in my savings bonds. I I paid 1100 dollars. I had so much fun with my friends in that car. I don't have a picture of mine, but this is what the Land Yacht looked like.

2024.05.09 03:24 ThePouncer DocuSign email, actually looks legit, but...what's the scam?

I got a Docusign spam / phishing email (content below), but I don't get the scam.
It looks legit as far as I can eyeball it - a couple of grammar or syntax mistakes in the body of the text which give it away, plus the fact that it is telling me about "Norton Billing 75685685976845 via DocuSign", which looks sus, and the "Reply-To" email is the dead giveaway.
I didn't click on any links, but I wanted to see where the giveaway would be in the email. All the links really were from DocuSign, the header info looks ok - so it APPEARS that someone is using DocuSign to send people legit emails for fraudulent transactions. I did go to DocuSign and enter the envelope number to see if it might be legit, so I guess now they know the email is live. (I was not logged in to DocuSign, and don't even have an account, so am not worried about getting any accounts taken over.)
So I'm wondering what the scam is?
Best I came up with would be:
1) People see it's a scam and try calling the number in the body of the text (which would be a scammer), or
2) Once you enter the envelope number on DocuSign or click on a link, they get the equivalent of a "receipt confirmation", so they know the email is monitored
My guess is it's #2, but wondering if anyone sees anything I missed.

2024.05.06 01:00 CorbanzoBean69 1962 Cadillac Coupe DeVille Crankcase Ventilation?

I’ve got a 1962 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, and I’ve been trying to get it fixed up for inspection. It failed the first time due to “exhaust leaks,” but after further personal inspection, I’ve realized what they found was blow-by from the crankcase ventilation system. 1962 was the last model year that didn’t come with a PCV valve, so this is why I am getting all that blow-by. I’d like to retrofit something to route this ventilation pipe back to the intake, but I’m struggling to figure out the best approach.
Additionally, do I need to do this in order to pass inspection? This is in Texas, and as far as I can tell, they shouldn’t have failed me for this because the car did not come with the PCV system and was only required starting in 1968.
Any advice would be much appreciated!

2024.05.05 13:03 pillowcase-of-eels [Music/Book] Emilie Autumn's Asylum, pt. 4 – The Great Biographical Bamboozling: a fanbase's quest to systematically debunk their idol's fantastical claims

🫖 Welcome back to the Asylum write-up. This is where you live now. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
In this installment, we finally take a closer look at how Emilie Autumn's hyper-loyal fanbase gradually started losing faith in her as, among other things, it became more and more apparent that she... wasn't exactly a reliable narrator – in her semi-autobiographical book, or in general.

HOW IT STARTED: A WOMAN OF MYSTERY

Willow, weep for me Don't think I don't see This life I'm living in two But still it's something I must do I'm not unique in this Nor am I special, sweet, or kind I court a thousand smiles Yet I keep my own to hide behind (“Willow”, 2004 🎵)
I've previously referred to EA as an “expert vagueposter”, and this is relevant here.
For an artist who built her brand on a pledge of raw, rats-and-all honesty, EA has always been quite guarded about the specifics of her personal life. (Until her current partner, for instance, she always danced around calling anyone a boyfriend, even when the nature of the relationship was pretty obvious.) Her whole angle is telling “the truth”, but through whimsical fantasy. As early as the fairy-themed Enchant era, she had her own world, her own vernacular; she spoke in metaphors, in-jokes, and quirky anachronisms. Taxis were carriages, her electric keyboard was a harpsichord, she always capitalized Time and Art like Shakespeare does. On the Asylum forum, automatic word filters would change “fan” to “muffin”, “fairy” to “faerie”, “bra” to “teacup holder”, and “responsibility” to “ratsponsibility”.
She's a chatterbox who loves to share memories and funny anecdotes, but she usually keeps them short and sweet, Snapple-facts style. 📝 She's great at painting by touches in her storytelling, revealing just enough to let your imagination auto-complete the rest. 🔍 Even the most banal tidbits are very artfully told, very “on brand”, often dense with symbolism and foreshadowing – but also very abstracted.
She is especially elusive when it comes to her background and formative years. See the way she catches herself in this interview 📺📝 while describing her “favorite scar”, which is from an eel bite: “My – well, someone I knew... [gasp-laugh] had it as a pet, and...” (She was about to say “my sister”.)
In short, the way EA talks about her life is often very personal, but not all that candid – and sounds more like it's meant to provide a curated, coherent backstory for Emilie Autumn the character, rather than Emilie Autumn the person.
I'll tell the truth, all my songs Are pretty much the fucking same I'm not a fairy but I need More than this life, so I became This creature representing more to you Than just another girl... (“Swallow”, 2006 🎵)
In the beginning, this guardedness naturally contributed to the mystique. It made it all the more special when, once in a while, she would briefly drop the theatrics to share something earnest and relatively unfiltered. Like this composed, but vulnerable post from 2004 📝 about her father losing his battle to cancer, and her attempts at closure over their tense relationship. Or this 2012 anti-bullying campaign thing 📺 in which she opens up about being a target of intense physical bullying in elementary school, to a point that contributed to her being homeschooled at 9.
Fans in the early years were curious about her backstory, of course – but not too prodding or invasive, to my knowledge. I think there was an understanding that EA, like many performers, wanted to come across as human and approachable, while still cultivating an “aura” and retaining some privacy. But obviously, when she announced that she was writing a Tell-All Memoir in 2007, everyone was dying to read it. TEA TIME!

HOW IT'S GOING: A WOMAN OF... MALARKEY???

LIAR! LIAR! LIAR! LIAR! LIAR! LIAR! LIAR! LIAR! LIAR! LIAR! LIAR! LIAR! LIAR! LIAR! LIAR! LIAR! (“Liar”, 2006 🎵)
As we've learned, the original 2009 release of EA's book was highly anticipated, but somewhat tainted by a bunch of shipping delays and unfulfilled promises. From the start of her career, EA had always cultivated a close parasocial involvement with her audience; many fans had as deep an attachment to her, personally, as they did to her art. So, for instance, when EA tweeted about all the personal dedications she was lovingly writing in overdue books, only for the books to arrive many months later and unsigned with no tangible explanation, it wasn't simply frustrating: it was betrayal amongst kin!
Really, it wasn't so much about fans not getting what they paid for – it was about the lack of clear communication or genuine accountability. This is pure speculation on my part, but the poppycock that EA tweeted about signing the books strikes me as the panic-lie of someone who hadn't realized just how many heartfelt, personalized dedications she would actually have to write when she came home from tour. And then she just couldn't do it, because she was overworked, paralyzed, distracted, depressed, procrastinating, whatever. Which... you know... is unfortunate, but probably not unforgivable. Especially for a touring performer who is open and vocal about their mental health issues.
I'm confident that most fans would have been happy to tell her that her well-being meant more to them than an autograph, or something along those lines. Instead, EA's cagey and avoidant demeanor around this issue left fans very salty – and newly suspicious of their favorite artist's word.
Which was regrettable timing for EA, because they had just received their copies of her memoir.
Here's a cursory look at some key biographical points that didn't hold up to scrutiny when more and more vexed fans, over the years, started looking into them.
Content warning until end of post: family estrangement, death by fire, worsening physical health issues, mention of disordered eating / weight loss / thinspiration, and LIES! LIES! LIIIIIES!

“EMILIE AUTUMN LIDDELL (BORN SEPTEMBER 22, 1979) IS AN AMERICAN SINGER-SONGWRITER...” (Wikipedia)

Every fandom has its Holy Grail. Because a number of EA's early releases were limited pressings put out through now-defunct record labels, the EA fandom in its heyday was a collector's wonderland. 📝🦠 At the height of her popularity, the original Enchant jewelcase (the one with the puzzle-poster) could easily fetch around $500 dollars on eBay, unsigned. The handwritten lyrics of an Opheliac B-side went for $940 in 2009. Don't even ask me about the hard copies of her two poetry books: those never even popped up over the five or six years that I had various alerts set up for all EA-related listings.
But the true crown jewel of EA rarities is the untitled promo version of her (also virtually unfindable) 2001 instrumental debut On a Day... No one knows how many copies exist. The darn thing is so rare that it's not even listed on Discogs. For a while, the only picture of the elusive “Violin” promo CD that was circulated online was this one.🪞 Go ahead, click the link. Notice anything odd? That black box where one composer's birth year should be?
I'm not sure why the notorious hyper-fan who originally shared this picture on the forum in the early 2010s took it upon himself to censor it before posting. I wasn't able to pinpoint when or why people started questioning EA's age, but clearly, something had already transpired to let him know that not redacting said birth year might, uh... cause an upset. In any case: at some point, people started digging – and eventually, the unredacted version of the “Violin” tracklist (as well as public records and literal receipts from eBay auctions) would be brandished as one more piece of damning evidence that EA was indeed (gasp!) two years older than she claimed to be.
“Okay, and?” you shrug. “What's the big deal?” I'm shrugging too! What can I say? People don't like realizing they've been fooled, even about something stupid. I will note that EA's fall equinox birthday (hence her middle name “Autumn”, yes) had been somewhat significant in the fandom. Over the years, EA's birthdays had been marked by online release parties, Q&A's, community events, special merch sales... A number of fans liked donning her trademark cheek heart on September 22. It felt a bit uncanny to realize that she had been announcing a false age on those occasions. It wasn't “a big deal” so much as it was incredibly odd.
Other than being appalled that Self-Proclaimed Staunch Feminist EA would give in to the cult of youth and not cop up to her real age, many fans were just plain bewildered: who would commit so stubbornly to such an inconsequential lie? What was even the point of lying by two years only? Why did she think anyone would care that she was 28 rather than 26 when Opheliac came out? What was she possibly getting out of this...??
My completely speculative theory is that, whether it was her idea or her then-manager's, the lie originated as a marketing strategy early on in her career. The “Violin” demo was recorded in 1997, when EA was 19-going-on-20. Per the liner notes of On a Day... 📝, which came out when she was 22, the demo's purpose was to be “a sort of calling card in the classical music industry”. Evidently, that didn't work out; EA claims, in the same paragraph, to have walked out on a classical recording deal at 18 because they wouldn't give her enough creative control.
Talented and unique as she was, she was trying to break out in a notoriously elitist and innovation-resistant milieu – and unlike her, most of the 22-year-old classical violinists she was in competition with had actually graduated from their prestigious music schools. But you know what sells better than an ambitious college dropout in her early twenties? Tweaking the truth just so to market yourself as an unconventional wunderkind, barely out of her teens! Any rendition of a complex, learnèd musical piece sounds more intriguing and impressive if you think it was played by an especially young (and beautiful) person. 20 was plausible, close enough to her real age, barely a lie at all, and such a nice, round number for a debut album.
Notice how much of the On a Day... liner notes, linked above, center on her precociousness, her uniqueness, and her savant-like dedication to her craft – a focus that seems absent from the promo version (from what I can decipher in those potato-quality pictures, anyway). These talking points would provide the basis for a lot of her early self-promotion and budding stage persona in the Enchant years. Even though the EP failed to make EA a household name in the classical world, the wunderkind narrative was her “in” to grab the attention and heart of a broader audience.
And I guess she's been running with it ever since.

“MY ANCESTRY IS POSITIVELY LITTERED WITH LUNATICS AND GIRLS WHO FALL DOWN RABBIT HOLES ... MY NAME IS EMILIE AUTUMN LIDDELL. YES, THAT LIDDELL.”

Oh, come on. Much as a fan may want to believe, isn't that a little on the nose? The anglophile with an obsession for tea, clocks, and madness... is literally related to Alice in Wonderland? 🔍 Curiouser and curiouser indeed.
EA came out as Emilie Autumn Liddell in The Book – of course – in a passage where she describes an interaction with a nurse. 📝 Note how she stresses the authenticity of her name, and how not-chosen it is (and the Alice connection, which just comes up organically) by disclosing it in a scene where she's filling out paperwork.
I'm pointing this out, because it would be tempting to allow room for creative license (and the slightest cringe) in a work of creative fiction based on personal experience. Buuut... TAFWG was not marketed as fiction. The main narrative in TAFWG, according to EA, is an actual fac-simile of the journals she kept during a harrowing stay at a Los Angeles psychiatric hospital following a suicide attempt. This is something that EA has stressed from the inception of the book (and throughout all subsequents re-issues, even as the main narrative was altered and reworked), even claiming that a legal team had advised her to redact some names to avoid potential lawsuits. So, no, she's not doing a bit there.
When, after it made the rounds a few times, it became apparent that the claim didn't really make sense 📝🔍, reactions were mixed. Some older, diplomatic fans downplayed it as a somewhat embarrassing, but harmless self-mythologizing – similar in nature to her insistence on calling her electric keyboard a “harpsichord”. Devout EA apologists (commonly referred to as “bootlickers” in an increasingly polarized fandom – oh, don't worry, we're getting to that!) invoked the “life as performance art” defense: when she said it was literally her first name, she meant it metaphorically, duh! And either way, she probably had her reasons.
But others took offense at the boldness of the lie, or simply became curious. Was Liddell even her name at all?
If you've checked the link just above, you already know the answer. Per the public California birth log (a somewhat demented invasion of privacy that could well have been avoided by... not repeatedly drawing attention to a name that someone in the book calls “right out of a movie”?) : yes, no, kind of.
EA was born Emily Autumn Fischkopf* on September 22, 1977. The name came from her father, a first-generation immigrant from Germany. Her maternal grandmother's maiden name was Liddell (but no, not that Liddell, or so remotely that it doesn't matter). EA may have had it legally changed at some point in the last decade, but as of 2012, based on the public log of foreign visitors to Brazil (where she toured that year), her passport still bore the name “Emily Autumn Fischkopf”.
*No, EA's birth name is not literally “Fischkopf”. It's a non-silly German name that begins with an F. I know that it's ridiculous to clutch my pearls about EA's peace of mind now, but triggering new and disquieting Google alerts for a name she clearly wants nothing to do with (and that you don't care about) just feels... distasteful? I don't know. That info has been floating around long enough, the point has been made; this write-up is not about EA's last name, but about the fiends we made along the way! So Fischkopf it is.
Let's track the evolution here! It appears that she went by “Autumn Fischkopf” for at least part of her formative years, if we are to believe the credits from Mark Ruffalo's middling film debut 📺 (she was the child actor's violin-playing body double) and this random article about a Nigel Kennedy performance in 1997. 🔍 (That last link – possibly her first ever mention in the press? – is a niche favorite of mine. Violin superstar Nigel Kennedy calls her a “talented fiddler”, which suggests that she did have some cred and promise in the classical milieu at a young age, and that there is at least some truth to her claims of being a wunderkind. It also cracks me up that, out of all the things she's reiterated over the years, “I was born in '79” was a lie, but “I was attacked by a pet eel” was fact-checked by Nigel Kennedy.)
At some point in her late teens, she dropped the Teutonic surname and adopted the French ending of her given name (she made it a “LIE”! how poetic) to form the moniker “Emilie Autumn”. I assume that's also when she started privately going by Emilie / EA for short.
So there you have it. The damning evidence. A performing artist... changed her name. To her grandmother's name. Riveting stuff!
And to think that her fans could have carried on naively believing “Autumn” was her last name, or assuming it was a romantic nom de scène she picked during her Ren Fair phase. Or perhaps, even, not thinking much about her name at all, like normal people.
But nooo, she just had to poke the hornet's nest by making a whole thing out of it.

“MY ENTIRE FAMILY DIED IN A FIRE.”

If you've never encountered a method-acting con artist or a person who struggles with pathological lying (I'll let you decide for yourself which of these, if either, applies to EA), you probably believe that you'd spot them a mile away. And in my experience, that's exactly why you wouldn't! Whether it's compulsion or calculated strategy, successful fibbers rely on people's natural social cues (like their assumption of good faith, their confirmation bias, their empathy, their desire for validation, their fear of awkwardness, ...) to subtly direct the flow and tone of the conversation. This allows them to short-circuit potential questioning of their claims.
One such strategy, for instance, I call the “I-will-not-further-speak-about-the-incident maneuver”. Out of the blue, you drop a graphic and incisive one-liner about something horrific that happened to you, in a curt or flippant tone that throws the listener off and usually shuts them up – thus sparing you from having to back up your claim with any convincing specifics. I'm not saying that every person who does this is a liar. Horrific stuff does happen to people, and I'm not here to police how they're supposed to disclose it. I'm just saying that if you wanted to fabricate an obvious Tragic Backstory™ and smuggle it past otherwise rational, discerning and reasonably intelligent people, that would be one way to do it. Full disclosure: it does work better in person than it does over the internet, especially when you've kept a blog.
When EA curtly dropped this bomb on Twitter (in response to an innocuous fan question that mentioned her parents – the receipt has sadly been X'd out of existence), and every subsequent time a new fan found out about her family's tragic demise (“I had no idea!”), the response was typically one of shock and sadness – and, in a few heartbreaking cases, commiseration from other survivors of family-annihilating events.
Many fans already had a hunch that something was up with her family, of course. She hinted at neglect and possible abuse in her book and lyrics. A number of her fans also came from dysfunctional households, so her not wishing to elaborate on the topic would probably have been a non-issue. But now she's saying they're dead? All of them? In a FIRE?! Holy macaroni! And you know it must have been awful, because EA – the same woman who got a dozen bangers out of a three-month-long toxic relationship, and based over a decade of her work on one bad hospital stay – had never, not once, felt called to share a song or poem about how it might affect a person to... lose all of their entire immediate family to a fire. Hmm. Meanwhile, the handful of older fans who had been following her since Enchant and remembered her dad passing in 2004 gritted their teeth and rolled their eyes. “Do your research. That's all I can say.” (We'll get into the culture of censorship free speech regulation on the Asylum forum in due time.)
Before more and more embittered ex-fans started compiling and circulating the receipts in the early-mid-2010s, investigating the whole “dead family” thing was a lonely journey – a coming-of-age expedition for the critical-minded Plague Rat, trawling through free background check websites and old Wayback Machine archives, until you went “Welp, there it is, I guess” and suddenly felt older, stupider, and a little bit hollow inside.
Although I don't remember how I personally made my way to The Truth (lol) back in the day, I still have a vivid memory of the moment I found the Facebook profile of EA's Very Much Non-Deceased Mother. It was mostly posts about her costume design work. A few candid pictures with EA's siblings and their kids. Christmas, birthdays, a wedding. Just... aggressively normal stuff. It was bizarre, looking in on this family of cheerful strangers with familiar cheekbones. Knowing that, somewhere out there, was an estranged eldest daughter, who had run off years ago to become a fiddle-wielding rockstar – and was now passing them off as having all died a gruesome death, while her fans secretly stalked their family photos. (Because I know you'll be asking in the comments: yes, EA's family is aware. Her mother once posted a picture of young EA and her siblings on Pinterest, sarcastically captioned “After most of us were killed in the fire.” 📝)
Again, it's tempting to discount EA's remark as a metaphor for family estrangement, taken too literally by neurodivergent minors who just didn't understand performance art. Well. First of all, even as a metaphor... let's admit, once again, that that 2000s edginess has aged like fine milk. It's a little crass to make a “metaphor” out of a plausible, life-shattering trauma that other people actually have to live with. (Veronica lost a beloved house to a literal fire 🔍 during her tenure as a Crumpet, for instance; no one died, but that alone seemed pretty rough.)
But, more to the point, evidence suggests that EA also told this to real people in her real, off-stage life – such as her Trisol manager, who backed the claim on the official Asylum Forum in 2007. 📝 When questioned about this post on a renegade forum in 2013, he had this to say:
I was the fool in this case. EA made that up of course. It’s just one thing on a long list of things she made up. Let’s agree she’s very creative with facts if she wants people to believe a story. (...) I once had a short chat with [EA's mom] and I got the strong impression she wasn’t dead at the time. Haha.
(OK, dude, but did you or did you not sell fake EA tickets on a scammy website in 2008? Because we never did get the skinny on that.)
Fifteens years on, EA continues to insist, unprompted, that “the fire” destroyed her childhood drawings and baby pictures. 📝 This more recent Instagram post is like a Greatest Hits of her most notorious yarns, to a degree that's either premeditated trolling or a subconscious call for help. She casually, yet pointedly mentions her age in relation to a specific year... and specifically draws attention to the signature, one that she used well into the Enchant era. In doing so, she made me notice, for the first time, that the A blends into an F. As one could expect from an artsy, Renaissance-obsessed teenager, her OG signature was a freaking monogram for Emily Autumn Fischkopf. It's like “The Tell-Tale Heart” for the digital age! AM I THE ONLY ONE SEEING THIS?? 🦠

A BIT O' THIS & THAT: MISCELLANEOUS CLAIMS

Just for fun, here are other sundry “citation needed” facts that EA has claimed over the years. All are originally from the book unless sourced otherwise. Some of them may have been jokes, some of them might even be true! Whatever that word still means!

ELECTRIC VIOLIN: UNPLUGGED

You know how whenever a musician starts behaving obnoxiously, old sages will come down from Mount Wisdom to advise disgruntled fans to “simply ignore [behavior]” and “just focus on the music”? Well, in the Asylum, “just focusing on the music” won't always preserve you from EA's shenanigans. This “claim” is a little different, but I've decided to include it because it is so odd, emblematic, and ultimately tragic. I also count it as “biographical”, because it involves a key tenet of EA's character sheet: the violin.
Being a kickass fiddler is one of EA's trademarks, and has always been central to her narrative; as of 2024, “world-class violinist” is still the first claim to fame she lists in the “Story” section of her official website. Which beggars the question: why won't she play it? And why won't she acknowledge that she's not playing it?
We got our hopes up in 2020, with that one post 📝 about her iconic 1885 Gand & Bernardel getting refurbished by a luthier – a thoughtful birthday surprise from her boyfriend – but despite the promising “More to come...” at the end of the caption, that turned out to be a false alarm. In truth, it may well have been over a decade since anyone has witnessed EA draw a single note from her cherished instrument.
The fact that Lord Autumn was able to sneak it out during lockdown without the Lady noticing tends to confirm that she hadn't been playing much behind the scenes. She seems to be under the impression that e-violin manufacturer Zeta is no longer in business (they did close down in 2010 🔍, but reopened under new management in 2012), which suggests that she hasn't been keeping up with the violin scene for a while. Besides, the fingernails don't lie. 🐀
As the live shows veered more theatrical with the release of Opheliac, the extended violin features from the Enchant era were cut to two main appearances per concert: “Face the Wall”, a seven-minute-short, Hendrixesque take on Arcangelo Corelli's “La Folia” – and “Unlaced”, an arpeggio-ed frenzy that was originally paired with a stilt-walking and ballet performance by the Crumpets. These two instrumental tracks remained a fixture on four successive tours. And on four successive tours, “Unlaced” was... well... clearly dubbed. 📺 She was holding her e-violin, her hands were playing the notes, but what was coming out of the speakers was indubitably the studio version.
There were possible explanations, of course. Some sound buffs pointed out that “Unlaced” has multiple violin layers, and that a live violin solo would have sounded harsh and unbalanced over the supporting tracks 🔍 – but then, why pick an unplayable song as a staple of the show?
The violin-miming wasn't even very hush-hush, she didn't try that hard to hide it – it was just never addressed or acknowledged. On “Unlaced”, Veronica was usually summoned to “play” the keyboard – and we knew that was make-believe, they had a whole skit about it. 📺 Ditto when EA would play the intro to a song, then get up from the keyboard as she started singing, and the harpsichord track just kept going. It was part of the theatrics, the suspension of disbelief; live playing just wasn't the focus.
Still, because playing two songs should have been in her wheelhouse, EA's choice to stand on stage and mime along with her own world-class violin skills was puzzling. We knew EA was capable of playing “Unlaced”: “Face the Wall” was proof enough that she could still shred like nobody's business, and some lucky fans got to hear her nerd out about pitch standards and rock some Bach at VIP showcases in 2011 (though it was always the same piece, and reportedly not always on point: “she made beginner mistakes, like weird jaw, wrist, elbow placement and tension...” 🐀). And sure, “Face the Wall” was an intense piece, but... it was one of two in the show. The same two, always. She was supposed to be classically trained...!
As EA's fabrications became more common knowledge among the fanbase, people took increasing issue with this odd staging choice – particularly after “Face the Wall” was retired partway through the 2011 tour, leaving only the pantomime, with nothing else happening on stage to distract from it. 📺 People started fixating on her constant and inexplicable tweaking of the truth. Fake name, fake age, fake promises, and now she was fake-fiddling and making a grand show of it? Was she outright mocking her audience, daring them to call her out? Milking a skill she had grown bored with, in the lowest-effort way possible, knowing that goo-goo-eyed fans would still pay to see it? Playing them the world's saddest song on the world's quietest e-violin?
The release of new album Fight Like a Girl in 2012 did little to soothe the Plague Rats' fiddle blues. The violin was much less prominent on FLAG than it had been on Opheliac and Enchant. There were almost no solos, which provided fewer opportunities for playing or miming on stage. “Unlaced” was retired from the touring setlist. One night in Texas during the 2012 tour, due to being on vocal rest, EA played the melody line of “Liar” on the violin. 📺 And that was pretty much the last time world-class violinist Emilie Autumn was heard playing her instrument, on stage or in recording – to the dismay of many fans who had loved her for it.
Can someone please grab this woman by her hand, lead her across her livingroom/bedroom/study, and point at that lonely forgotten dusty violin in a corner of hers so she remembers that she actually owns it? (🐀)
It was yet another bizarre, glaring inconsistency in EA's narrative that fans seemed expected to ignore. Another elephant in the padded room. (Personal anecdote that I don't have a receipt for: in early 2012, when I asked if there was a possibility of EA playing another baroque set for the VIP events on the upcoming tour, her then-manager responded that that wouldn't be possible because venues didn't have the proper acoustics.)
Through some her posts over the years , attentive fans pieced together the likely truth of EA's effective retirement as a violinist. It's actually quite sad, and may cast a different light on EA's artistic shift.
The 2011 tour was initially scheduled for late 2010. It was postponed because EA had been neglecting a jaw injury for years, and needed emergency surgery to avoid “serious and irreversible damage” to her one violin-holding jaw. 📝 She had the surgery early in September; in late November, she performed all over Latin America for six nights straight, and by January, she was back on tour. The same tour during which she made “beginner's mistakes” on the Bach partita, and retired “Face the Wall” for good after a few shows.
She underwent jaw surgery again in 2018, after three years of orthodontic treatment which she said had “prevented [her] from performing”. It was the first anyone was hearing of this (she said she hadn't been touring because she was writing the musical!), and it's as far as EA ever got in terms of half-addressing the obvious: that after dedicating a third of her time on Earth to her craft, after years of pushing through the pain night after night, rushing through recovery periods, and making compromises so the show could go on... she may not be physically able to play concert-level violin anymore.
Once again, something that should (and would) have elicited empathy and support from most fans turned into a point of frustration, speculation and mockery, for years – because EA continued to favor pretend-play and fantasy over the sobering, unglamorous truth. Well, at least everyone's unhappy.

2024.05.04 02:26 linoriko GO Taxi App - Game changer!

I recently got back from a two week trip to Japan and I feel that using this app was a total game changer for my trip. Took well over a couple dozen rides.
After having read lots of transportation questions on this subreddit and elsewhere, I felt it was important to share my experience in the hopes of saving someone else the time from figuring it out.
In areas like Arashiyama Kyoto calling a taxi via the GO app was easy, convenient, and left no mystery to the driver about where we wanted to go. Especially in Kyoto where tourists taking up public transit is an ongoing problem for local commuters, I felt it especially important to be considerate of locals and my impact on public transportation.
Hailing a random taxi that had a GO sticker also made it easy to pay at the end by scanning their QR code and automatically processing payment when the driver ends the ride. Compared to paying with cash or card then dealing with a receipt, using the the GOpay feature made it so much easier to finish the ride.
Misconceptions? I was able to use an American Express CC for all my trips (linked in app) Taxi drivers loved it! 👌🏼 Reservation feature does exist although I didn't use it So efficient, less stairs compared to subways trains
Feel free to ask if you have questions! Happy to share more about my recent trip.
Safe travels 🌸 🧳

Have a great week everyone and happy reading!

1. EV APP OF THE WEEK: CHARGEMAP

Chargemap is the ideal travelling companion to help you find charging stations and plan hassle-free trips in your electric car. Chargemap is the benchmark app that is already the loyal companion of over a million EV and PHEV drivers for stress-free travelling and charging. Chargemap’s map lists over 500,000 charge points and covers most European charging networks. It makes it so easy to locate charging stations in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Austria, Britain, Norway and many other countries across Europe.

2. EV NEWS: EV POWERED

London’s black cab drivers have joined forces with leading charging provider InstaVolt to call for more help to go electric. The Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association, which represents the majority of black cab drivers in London, wants the government to cut VAT on public charging to 5% to help reduce costs for drivers.

3. EV TIP: HAVE FUN

It may seem like a silly tip, but have some fun! Exploring the functions of your new EV and getting to know it before setting off on the open road may come in handy, both for practical and entertainment purposes. Perhaps you’ve just got a new Mercedes EQS, why not try out the massage function on the seats?
Or have some fun with your kids in a Tesla model 3 with a couple of rounds of “caraoke” or surprise them with the whoopie cushion. No matter what car you choose, have some fun exploring all the new features so you can make your daily commute or long journeys more enjoyable.

4. EV PODCAST: PETROL PED

BYD Seal - Chinese EV that has established makers worried! Why does the BYD Seal have established car manufacturers worried. I put this impressive EV through it's paces on road and on track. BYD have been making batteries and battery tech for 28 years but have only recently been making cars. The Seal has some interesting technology including an LPF battery. It delivers impressive range, a good level of equipment and all at a very competitive price point.

5. EV REVIEW: STUFF TV

Smart #3Smart #3 review: Fast, fun and quirky too. Feels leaner and meaner than the Smart #1, but its looks and interior quirks might not suit everyone. Apparently quite a lot of people are making a fuss about the Smart #1 not being true to the brand because it’s not dinky like earlier models. If you’re of the same opinion then you’ll probably not going to care much for the follow up. But the Smart #3 has one major upside: it can easily accommodate people who aren’t small either. If you’ve got an open mind this sporty coupe-style EV is well worth investigating, because it’s lots of fun.
Have a fantastic week!

2024.04.27 03:05 Mindless-Tomorrow-93 Trip Report - Benelux & Rwanda Gorilla Trekking

Hi folks, this is my first time writing a trip report, I hope you might find the content useful if you find yourself traveling through any of these areas. The primary purpose of my trip was to go gorilla trekking in the Virunga Mountains in northern Rwanda. I spent just over a week in Rwanda, as well as ~3-ish days in Europe on either end of the Rwanda portion of the trip. The Europe portion of the trip is honestly not the interesting. Logistically, there are no direct flights between the US and Rwanda. Connections are available through Brussels, Amsterdam, and points in the Middle East and elsewhere in Africa. I tend to have awful luck with air travel - delays, cancelled flights, etc. Because the gorilla trek permit is good only for a single specific day, and apparently you cannot easily reschedule or get a refund if you fail to show up on your assigned day, I wanted to make extra sure I was building padding into my travel itinerary. Also, I have family who live in the Benelux region, and I was able to spend some time with them.
About me: 35M, US/EU citizen living in the US. Have solo travel experience throughout Europe and South America, this was my first trip to Africa.
Air Travel logistics: I redeemed frequent flyer miles for this trip. I flew Delta between JFK and Brussels, and then Brussels Airlines between Brussels and Kigali (with a 1-hour stop in Entebbe, Uganda on the return from Kigali to Brussels.)
Day 1 - Antwerp: My flights were uneventful, and arrived at Brussels Airport at around 9am on a Monday morning. There's frequent train connections between the airport and the city center (roughly 20 minute ride time), and I arrived at my hotel near Gare du Nord by 10:30am. I've visited Brussels before and didn't have anything in particular that I wanted to see in the city, so I decided to take a train to Antwerp for the day. The train ride is only about 40 minutes, and the Antwerp station is located near the city center. The day was kind of a waste for a few reasons: I was pretty jet-lagged, the weather was crappy with cold, high winds and heavy rains, and being a Monday, many museums and attractions were closed. I ended up just walking around the city as best I could in between downpours, and found a couple cozy coffee shops to get some caffeine and snacks. I returned to Brussels around dinner time, and went to bed early.
Day 2 - Ghent and Bruges: There was a public transport strike in Brussels on this day, so I decided to again take the train out of Brussels fairly early in the morning. Ghent is about 40 minutes from Brussels. The main train station in Ghent is located a bit outside the city center, but there's plenty of busses and trams to cheaply get you from the station into town. Ghent felt cozy and walkable, though pretty quiet. There's a lot of interesting medieval architecture to enjoy. I assume the city might be more vibrant in the summer, as it looked like there were a lot of sidewalk cafes along the river that were still closed for the season. Bruges was roughly another 30-40 minutes away from Ghent, and was my favorite of any of the Belgian cities I visited. The city was quite walkable, with beautiful architecture, quiet parks, windmills, and a variety of food options to choose from.
Day 3 - Family time in Aachen and Maastricht: I caught an early-morning ICE train from Brussels to Aachen. Note that the Brussels metro and train stations were somewhat uncomfortable from a safety standpoint in the early morning, with no sign of security personnel anywhere. I'd suggest being very cautious if you're traveling in the early morning or late night. I spent the day with family exploring Aachen, which is a fairly small German city known as being the residence of Charlemagne. I found Aachen beautiful, but again, very quiet. For reasons unknown to us, the main museum attraction in town was closed, which left us with little to fill our time in Aachen. We ended up taking the train to Maastricht (NL), which had a lot more going on. Maastricht is a university town, and has an impressive old town with lots of nooks and crannies to explore. I enjoyed catching up with family, doing some shopping, and enjoying a nice dinner and couple glasses of wine in Maastricht, before catching the train back to Brussels.
Day 4 - Travel from Brussels to Kigali: My flight departed Brussels Airport around 10am, and arrived in Kigali at around 8pm. De-planing in Kigali didn't make use of a jet bridge, rather, you walked off the airplane down a stair case, then walked across the tarmac to enter the terminal. This was something of an interesting experience off of a wide-body aircraft. Immigration was a smooth process. I entered Rwanda using my US passport, and was asked the usual questions (purpose and duration of visit, and how long am I staying). I paid a $50 visa-on-arrival fee via my credit card, and was issued a receipt and stamp in my passport. Once clearing passport control, I then retrieved my checked bag from a baggage carousel. I was then instructed to place it (along with my carry-on) through an x-ray machine, where it was screened by the airport security staff. I presume they were checking for weapons, though I guess I'm not sure what the rationale was for x-raying baggage after coming off a flight. The Kigali airport was small and dated, but spotlessly clean, and all of the staff I interacted with were quite friendly. Ultimately, the arrival formalities were completed within a half hour or so. My hotel sent a driver to pick me up, and he was waiting for me immediately outside the terminal doors. I was staying in a hotel that caters to western tourists, and it was located in a quiet neighborhood a few blocks from the city center. Feeling a little apprehensive about exploring a new city after dark, I visited the hotel bar for a nightcap before heading to bed.
Days 5 - 7 - Kigali: I spent 3 full days in Kigali (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). My first impression of the city was how spotlessly clean it was. People could be seen literally sweeping leaves and litter out of the gutters, green space was tended to by gardeners, there was no graffiti, etc. (Though, its worth noting that the government has been accused of human rights violations in the interest of keeping the city clean.)
Transportation was one of the few challenges I experienced. Kigali does have some city busses and mini-busses, though I would have needed the help of a local to figure out the routes and ticket system. Most "public" transportation seemed to be via motorbike, with the passenger riding immediately behind the driver. I'm told this is a cost-effective way to get around the city, but I wasn't quite brave enough to try it (I've personally never ridden on a motorcycle, and riding as a passenger through crazy Kigali traffic was a bit beyond my comfort zone.) Traditional taxis and Uber doesn't really exist. Hotels can arrange a driver in a vehicle with 4 wheels and a windshield, but the price was excessive (though you're probably expected to haggle a bit). Fortunately, I don't mind walking, and Kigali was fairly easily walkable, with ample side walks and marked cross walks across busy streets. It was HOT and HILLY, though - so be prepared for that. Bottled water was available in numerous kiosks, restaurants and gas stations for roughly $1 per bottle.
Kigali was a pretty diverse city in terms of socioeconomics - there were some neighborhoods that felt like high-end Florida neighborhoods, with highrise condos overlooking manicured golf courses. There were neighborhoods of dirt roads and modest houses with corrugated metal roofs, crowded and chaotic markets, and everything in between. I walked through all of these areas, and never felt the least bit unsafe or unwelcome anywhere that I wandered. As a white person, it was certainly obvious that I wasn't from the area, but the reaction from everyone I encountered ranged from apathy at worst, to warm hospitality. It was a lot of fun to explore the city, stop into random stores, coffee shops, restaurants and bars.
Some of the specific sights I visited included,
Kigali Genocide Memorial: A good museum with an English digital audio guide, and tells a vital part of the history of Rwanda. The grounds were pretty and peaceful, and a gift shop and an excellent cafe were on the grounds.
Kandt House Museum: A small museum about the era of German colonialism in Rwanda. It didn't take long to see the exhibits, and the museum itself is located in kind of a weird area, tucked back among old warehouses. It does offer a nice view of the hills around Kigali, though.
Belgian Peacekeeper Memorial: An old army facility where Belgian UN soldiers were murdered by genocidal Rwandan soldiers.
Kigali City Markets: Hectic, crowded and fascinating. I didn't experience any obvious scams or aggressive touts, so despite the crowds and chaos, it was enjoyable to walk around and see all of the random items for sale.
Kigali Car Free Zone: A few pedestrian-only blocks downtown. It was one of the only areas that felt a bit like a tourist trap, with expensive kiosks selling kitschy souvenirs, and somewhat pushy touts peddling newspapers and maps. It was nice to get away from the heavy vehicle traffic for a bit, but there wasn't anything in particular worth visiting here.
Sainte-Familie Church: A large Catholic church, important during the genocide.
Campaign Against Genocide Museum: In the same complex as the Rwandan parliament. Tells the story of the RPF party (to whom Rwanda's current president belongs) and their activities during the genocide. Definitely tells a story slanted in favor of the RPF and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, but a worthwhile visit nonetheless.
Biryogo Car Free Food Street: Another pedestrian-only zone with a wide variety of restaurants.
Rwanda is a pretty religious society, and on Sunday morning many people were on their way to the various churches. I'm not a religious person myself, but it was quite nice to walk through the relatively quiet streets of Kigali and listen to the signing coming from the various churches.
There were a lot of quality food options, both local traditional food, and cuisine from pretty much any culture around the world. The hotel I stayed at had a restaurant, and I ate there one evening. The hotel restaurant was good, but crazy expensive. They definitely catered to western tourists, and I suppose you were paying for the comfort and western-style experience. After the first night, I sought out other places in Kigali to dine, and had a great experience at a far cheaper cost.
Day 8 - Musanze: I had arranged to stay at a guest house in Musanze, and they were able to arrange a driver to pick me up from Kigali. The drive was about 2 hours, and absolutely beautiful, through the mountains. Musanze felt like a nice town, smaller and quieter than Kigali. The weather was also a little cooler, which was welcome. The neighborhood the guest house was in felt like it could have been an American suburb - wide, quiet streets and tidy single-family homes. I walked into downtown Musanze, which was fairly bustling with a couple good coffee shops, restaurants and a good sized shopping mall.
Day 9 - Gorilla Trekking: My host was able to arrange transportation to the Volcanoes National Park HQ, where the day started at around 7am. We were split into groups of about 8 tourists, along with two guides and a few other park staff and guards. We then drove about 20 minutes further into the park area, and set off on foot into the forest. Our trek ended up being fair easy, as the gorillas had wandered close to the edge of the park (potentially to feast on the crops being grown in the adjacent farms, which is apparently a serious problem for local farmers.) We found the gorillas after only about a half hour of hiking, and were permitted to stay for around an hour observing them. Words cannot do justice to the experience, it was absolutely incredible. Our guides were also fantastic and helped with making the most of the experience. Following the gorilla trek, I visited the "Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund," which is a very good museum sharing the history of the area, the gorillas, Dian Fossey and her research, and the national park. There were indoor and outdoor exhibits, and it offered an excellent view of the Virunga mountains. Returning to Musanze for the evening, I kept it low-key having dinner and at a local restaurant. Walking home from the restaurant, I passed a house with a large lawn where about 25 people of all ages were singing. It appeared to be some sort of private event, and there was professional video equipment filming. I couldn't understand what they were signing, and I wasn't able to determine what the occasion was, but it was magical to stand and listen to them for a few minutes, it was like an unplanned free concert for the community.
Day 10 - 11: Kigali Part II: The guest house I stayed at in Musanze again arranged a driver to return me to Kigali. I'd be finishing up my time in Rwanda at the Hotel Chez Lando, which has an interesting history and is connected with the events of the genocide. From what I could tell, the hotel attracted a mix of western tourists, western businesspeople, and local tourists and businesspeople. It was located in a busy neighborhood, but the hotel itself was pleasant and quiet. Unfortunately, I started to experience some stomach trouble at this point - I attribute it an iced coffee I had previous day, as I bet the ice cubes were made from local tap water, which I wasn't accustomed to. I think I was also starting to get burned out with my ambitious itinerary, a lot of walking, a lot of heat and some sunburn. I was able to pick up some Imodium at a pharmacy near the hotel, and some extra bottled water, and spent an afternoon napping, reading and recuperating. Fortunately, I felt better the following day, but the stomach problems would continue through my return to Europe.
The hotel was located a few blocks from Amahoro Stadium. It was under construction, and a security guard indicated that it wasn't possible to visit inside. The hotel arranged a "taxi" to visit the former home of the President of Rwanda, now a museum. It was a rather unusual museum - the grounds of the residence contain the wreckage from the plane crash which killed the former Rwandan president, and ignited the genocide. The remainder of the museum is an art museum, which apparently was partially closed at the time I visited. The staff seemed surprised to see me, and I was the only visitor present. I ended up getting a guided tour from two staff members, who proved to be quite friendly and knowledgable. Honestly, I enjoyed simply talking with them more than I enjoyed the museum itself. (Of note, the taxi from the hotel to and from the museum was $40.)
Being that I still wasn't feeling great, I took it slow for the remainder of my time in Kigali, and explored some nice neighborhoods, did some souvenir shopping, and spent some time relaxing in the city's parks and green spaces. Truthfully, I probably spent too much time in Kigali, and in hindsight, I would have rather visited a different city.
At one point, I had struck up a conversation with a Rwandan who asked if he could speak with me for a bit to practice his English. I had observed that there must be many English-speaking tourists coming to Rwanda, as its becoming a well-known destination for safaris and gorilla trekking. My new Rwandan friend explained to me that most western tourists purchase packaged tours, where they are picked up at the airport, shuttled door-to-door between luxury hotels and tourist destinations, and spend very little time exploring Rwanda itself, as I was doing. And, that matched what I saw with my own eyes. In downtown Kigali around the big businesses and embassies, you'd spot light-skinned tourists or expats. But all of the other European or American tourists I encountered were doing exactly what the Rwandan man described to me - they were bussed between tourist sights and high-end hotels, and seemed surprised to hear that I was planning my own itinerary and walking around Rwanda. Granted, I believe that everyone is entitled to travel as they see fit - but I'm personally glad I passed on the package tour options and instead arranged my own itinerary. Rwanda was such a hospitable country, and I have zero regrets about the way that I chose to experience it.
Day 12 - Returning to Europe: I spent a final morning in Kigali. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Rwanda, but was growing a little tired of the constant hustle and bustle, as well as the oppressive heat. My hotel checkout time was 5pm, and they offered a shuttle to the airport for a comparatively cheap $10. Upon arriving at the airport, the security staff thoroughly checked myself, my driver, my luggage and the vehicle we were traveling in before even letting us approach the terminal building. My flight wasn't scheduled to depart until 9:30pm, and when I did reach the terminal, I was directed to wait outside until check-in began for my flight. Once I made it inside the terminal, check-in, border formalities and security were relatively efficient. The airport has a small duty free area where I purchased some final souvenirs. The airport consists of only three gates, with no air conditioning and not particularly comfortable seating. I opted to use the business class lounge, which was crowded but at least was air conditioned with an OK food buffet and fairly comfortable seating. Boarding the flight was chaotic. There was a final security and passport check prior to entering the gate area - and when it was time to board, the door from the gate was simply opened, and it was a mad scramble out to the plane. It all went fine, though, and we were airborne without any delay. The flight stopped in Entebbe, Uganda for about one hour to drop off and pick up passengers. The process ended up being much more efficient than I expected, and soon enough we were on our way again. By this time, it was after midnight, and I slept quite well for at least 6 hours, which is pretty good for me on a flight. Arrival in Brussels was uneventful, with no issues with passport control or customs.
Day 13 - 14: Luxembourg: I'd never been to Luxembourg before, and didn't particularly feel the need to spend more time in Brussels, so I decided to take the train from the Brussels Airport to Luxembourg City. It required two brief train changes, but took less than four hours, and I was in Luxembourg city in time for lunch. I was exhausted from traveling, and still having some stomach trouble, so my first day in Luxembourg was low-key. I explored the city's unique terrain and architecture, and visited the Luxembourg City History Museum, which was worth the price of admission. I also visited the Villa Vauban art museum, which wasn't bad. After the heat, hustle and bustle of Rwanda, I was enjoying taking it slow and decompressing in the relative quiet, orderly and dare-I-say boring city of Luxembourg.
The following day, I took the train to the small town of Diekirch, Luxembourg (public transportation is free throughout Luxembourg, so I decided to take advantage.) Diekirch was quite the pleasant town, with a very good WWII history museum, classic car museum, and beer museum. The town was also having a street fair with food and craft vendors. The town had a nice riverwalk area, and, again, I was enjoying the slower pace, cooler weather, and opportunity to recharge a bit.
Day 15: Impromptu Family Meetup in Brussels: I returned to Brussels by train in the morning. My brother, who lives in Cologne (Germany), texted me saying he had an unexpected day off, and could get a cheap train to Brussels himself. So we spent the afternoon exploring Brussels for a bit. Neither of us were too impressed with Brussels, but did see the Atomium, the Convention Center and its impressive art-deco architecture, and enjoyed a final nice meal and couple of drinks.
Day 16: Return the USA: I had spent the night at an airport hotel for convenience. Brussels Airport was easy to navigate each time I passed through it on this trip, and once again I didn't run into any delays with check in, passport control or security. My flights were all on-time until I finally made it home.
Costs: I'll be honest, this wasn't a budget-friendly trip. I had been planning and saving for this trip for several years, and while I don't think I splurged too much, I was wasn't going out of my way to travel frugally. I think its worth noting that Rwanda is a fairly expensive country to visit. The gorilla trekking permit alone is $1500. Hotels and restaurants that offer a western-style experience charge a premium for that. Otherwise, prices in stores and restaurants were comparable to what I'd pay in a medium cost-of-living area in the US. (I did redeem frequent flyer miles for my flights, and hotel points for some of my hotel stays within Europe.)
Final Thoughts: To start with, I deliberately didn't go hard on tourist activities in Europe. Luxembourg was new to me, but I've traveled in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany before, and was mainly planning on using it as a base to prepare for and recover from the Rwanda experience. If you're planning to visit the BeNeLux countries, you can and should experience far more than I did.
Regarding Rwanda, I cannot say enough how much I loved the experience. The gorilla trekking was absolutely magical, but what I think I will remember most is the genuine warm hospitality of the people I encountered. I felt a little limited by transportation. I wish I had gotten comfortable with the motorbike "taxi" system and intercity busses, as relying on private car and driver to travel was cost-prohibitive, and I ended up feeling confined to places that I could easily walk to. Further, I should acknowledge that the Rwandan government has undertaken some controversial, perhaps authoritarian, policies in their efforts to present their country as welcoming to foreign tourists. Rwandan history is complicated, to say the very least, and I'm not in a position to pass judgement on the government's policies. But, an ethical traveler should be aware of these things, research them and make a judgement call on if or how to visit this country. That said, this trip was truly a once in a lifetime experience which I do not regret, and I would gladly return to Rwanda if the opportunity arises.

2024.04.25 17:32 Leppa444 Update on my large car collection that I posted about yesterday.

Update on my large car collection that I posted about yesterday.
Ok so I will go over every vehicle here and talk about it in one way or another. Honestly this might help me remember what needs to be done to the fleet so I can catch up on some shit this spring haha. It’s been a hard winter.
2013 Taurus Police Interceptor runs and drives great and has no problems. Been using it as a backup car lately since our van blew up but will park inside again soon because the 2005 Suburban we just bought that I don’t have any pictures of yet will be replacing the van for now.
2012 F-150 Runs and drives fine. It’s my work and maintenance vehicle that I use to keep up with all the rest.
2012 Chrysler Town & Country Was my wife’s until I blew it up this past Easter Sunday by flooring it to get around some slowpokes on the highway. Rear timing chain snapped, valves fucked pistons, waiting on sourcing a new engine for her and shop time.
1994 Chevy W/T 1500 My old work and maintenance truck. 4.3 Engine gave out at 365k miles. Waiting on a new engine and shop time.
1949 Ford F1 Is waiting on total restoration, #5 In line. Might make a flatbed rat rod out of it
1992 Chevy 1500 Silverado Runs and drives fine, small intake manifold coolant leak, no tail lights, waiting on shop time.
1956 Ford Custom Deluxe Wagon Is waiting on full restoration. #3 in line
1986 Ford LTD Crown Victoria Is waiting to have its engine harvested and donated to the 1989 Grand Marquis.
2006 Cadillac STS Was smashed up by a family member hitting a deer about a year back, still runs and drives just is too ugly to be seen in, waiting for junkyard parts to be found
1961 Chevy Apache 10 Runs and drives just has a rough idle at the moment. Need to dial in fuel pressure from electric pump conversion. Will clear coat patina because I love the way it looks and give it a nice new wooden bed floor.
1967 Ford Galaxy 500 4-Door Runs and drives but has a broken frame underneath driver door. Cannot be welded, just crumbling. Waiting on a used frame to be found (almost impossible in Minnesota)
1986 Mazda GLC Sport. Hasn’t had attention paid to it in a long time but I plan on re-wiring the engine, gutting the interior, and making it a track toy, still runs on 3/4 cylinders.
1996 Mercury Grand Marquis (Maroon Color) Engine blew up at 465k miles. Harvesting engine from 1999 Civilian Vic to place in this vehicle, waiting on shop time.
1986 GMC S-15 Runs and drives fine. Has manual transmission and is straight piped with glass packs, really rumbles. Needs floor pans addressed soon.
2000 Ford Windstar (Without light bar) Had transmission fail then was subsequently molested for parts to throw in the 2001 Windstar. Most likely awaiting the scrap yard
All 3 Dodge and Plymouth vans were parked because of ABS pump/module failures. Cannot get those parts new anymore, only rebuilt, between the 3 of them they have over 900k miles so honestly they’re either waiting for me to give a shit and send the parts off to be rebuilt or just to scrap them.
1974 Dodge Dart Sport Is waiting on a total restoration. Is #6 in line. Car my dad brought me home from the hospital in back in 1998.
1989 Mercury Grand Marquis is waiting on the engine from the 86 LTD.
1996 Chevy Monte Carlo needs transmission eventually, not worried about it now.
1989 Cadillac Deville Bought for a project and immediately regretted it. Home to a large mouse village. Might set on fire tbh.
1983 Oldsmobile Toronado Runs and drives fine actually. Needs water pump, vacuum line work, and a new dashboard because thieves took a crow bar too it to get the radio out. Waiting on a dashboard and shop time.
2005 (White Impala) needs transmission, promised my best friend we’d fix it and give it to him if he can pass his drivers test. Waiting on him to pass his drivers test and shop time.
2001 Ford Windstar (With light bar) Runs and drives fine. Needs new valve cover gaskets, smokes like a bitch, waiting on shop time.
1997 Monte Carlo Runs and drives fine. Was parked because it developed a small pin sized hole in radiator and will not hold enough pressure to provide heat in the winter anymore.
1989 Buick Electra Runs and drives fine. Has power steering leak, could use tires, waiting on shop time.
2004 Focus Wagon. $65 Baja Racing car in progress, will never see the road again.
1999 Dodge Stratus Water pump failed. Piece of shit, worth 7 whole dollars, waiting for me to charge my winch battery to haul it to the junkyard lol
1968 Ford Galaxy 500 2-Door Waiting on complete restoration, #7 in line.
1954 Mercury Monterey (With 1952 front end) Waiting on complete restoration, #1 in line, was my grandpas car when her met my grandma 60+ years ago.
2014 Cadillac XTS runs and drives but is a lemon... Don’t even get me started… Waiting on the building to eventually collapse and crush it in 40+ years. Waiting on a miracle.
1928 Ford Model A Current restoration project on temporary hold. Cutting my own custom wooden interior frame to mount the body panels too. Original 4-cyl still runs. Keeping as original as possible.
1999 Cadillac Deville Started eating coolant… Typical Northstar things, needs new head bolts/gaskets, waiting on shop time.
2006 Chevy Impala (Grey w/ White hood) Parked with 410k miles, still runs fine, hollow sway bar rusted through and snapped, waiting on shop time.
1997 Mercury Grand Marquis (Tan Color) 32k miles, Car that I’m borrowing to my dad for the time being, runs and drives flawlessly.
1984 Ford Escort Wagon Needs a lot of work. Head gaskets are gone, distributor and camshaft need replacement, and rear drums are locked up solid, waiting on shop time. (Have not moved to new shop yet)
2010 Crown Vic Police Interceptor Needs new transmission. Phat burnouts in front of my ex girlfriend’s house at 4am may have caused this but I’ll never tell.
1998 Lincoln Town Car Runs and drives flawlessly. A/C compressor bearing is on its way out so she is currently in the shop getting her compressor deleted via a bypass pulley. She’s one of my favorite daily cars because of the 2 tone color, we call her “Goldie”
2007 Lincoln Town Car Limousine. Not much to say about this one. I’ve given her plenty of time recently and straightened out all her 300k mile issues and we’ve already had a few legendary mobile parties in her.👌
1992 Mustang Convertible Was my very first car. 36k Miles. Slight steering rack leak, needs new cloth top, waiting for summertime drop top fun.
1966 Ford F-100 runs and drives well. Needs new tires and a new custom steel fuel line from tank to pump to keep it all original. In the shop currently.
1999 Firs Crown Vic Civilian is currently being harvested for parts. Engine is going into 1996 Grand Marquis.
1985 Chrysler LeBaron Turbo 2-Door Convertible runs and drives now just needs a fuel pump and a new soft top. Waiting on shop time.
1976 MG Midget Runs and drives fine. Fresh Engine, transmission, rear end, and suspension rebuild. Only 900 miles since rebuild. Got bored of it before I could finish body work so it’s waiting on me to find motivation to finish it lol
1959 Ford Fairlane 500 4-Door is waiting to be pulled out of the woods and have a total restoration done. #2 in line. V8 Yblock looks brand new. Might try filming a will it run YouTube video on this one.
1950 Ford Coupe Is waiting to be pulled from woods and receive a complete restoration. My dad may buy this one from me. He has more ideas and time than I do. Unknown position in restoration line.
2007 Ford Mustang Shelby GT is my go to show car. Almost never driven, maintained meticulously.
2005 Chevrolet Suburban We’ve only owned a few days and my wife has it at work right now so y’all will will have to take my word on that one😂
And I did just remember now that a few months ago I bought 2 1941 Ford Coupes that I haven’t collected yet. Will post photos of them eventually.
This was a lot of writing but I hope it was enough proof for the skeptics haha. Feel free to leave your comments and I’ll respond if I can, I’ve got nothing better to do today.🙂

2024.04.25 01:07 AfterEntertainer4921 7 day trip with SO (28m, 28f)

I never post on Reddit, but did a lot of research on this page prior to our trip so I am hoping that writing my experience will help another person in the future as it did myself. We were in Tulum from 4/16 - 4/23, and flew into the Tulum airport. Living in Denver, CO we are pretty used to higher prices. The amount of people on here complaining about prices makes me think that its all relative compared to your ordinary life and your expectations.
Airport Transportation: We used Jungle Shuttle, which is a taxi service at the airport, and it cost us $60USD. They actually have fixed rates posted based on the distance, so its a fixed cost and we felt comfortable with that rate. It took us about 30 minutes to get to our Airbnb in La Veleta (a neighborhood close to Centro Tulum). Overall, very very easy and our taxi driver was super friendly.
Lodging: As mentioned above, we decided to book an Airbnb in La Valeta. While planning the trip, we wanted to have a blend of beach days at the beach clubs, exploring the city checking out local restaurants, and an excursion. The Airbnb costs us $738USD for 7 days. It wasn't luxury, but it had all the necessary amenities including AC, amazing room service, king bed, kitchen, nice bathroom w/ shower and a man made cenote. Our stay here was seriously 10/10. We even rented bikes through the property owner for $10/day per bike.
Getting Around: We used our bikes basically everyday we were there for our day trips. To get to Central Tulum it was about ~10-15 minutes and very easy to navigate. Yes, some roads have potholes but like..grow a pair sheesh. We spent 3 full days at a couple beach clubs which I will talk about further down, but these bike rides were about 15-20 minutes and again was very easy. There is a paved road to get to the beach which was nice. The only negative part of this is there is a lot of trash along the roads which we learned to except and didn't let it ruin our experience. I would HIGHLY recommend using bikes if you're staying anywhere near Tulum. We only hailed a taxi when we were going out late for dinner and drinks. It cost us $200MXN ($12usd) each way to get to Centro Tulum from our airbnb in La Veleta. Getting to the hotel zone at night was a little more pricey, its cost us 550MXN ($32usd) to get there, and 600MXN ($35usd) to get back. Again, living in Denver, these prices didn't rattle us too much as Uber's here in the city can cost close to this during surge times on the weekend when going out.
Food Costs and Recommendations: If you're reading this and trying to figure out where to stay, especially if you're someone who would prefer to experience local restaurants rather than the beach clubs, you must check out 7 sur in La Veleta. There are so many great dining experiences and local foods to check out. Raum, Il Bacaro, La Pableta, and many more. Most of our budget for food went towards these places on 7 sur, especially dinner! An average meal with cocktails including cost around 70-80USD for 2 people. There are definitely cheaper options in this area as well. The beach clubs are a little pricier, but the cost comes with a day bed right on the beach.
Beach Day Clubs: We spend 3 full days (11am-6pm) at 2 different beach clubs. Ziggys and Kanan. Each one was a little different but we had fun at both. At Ziggys, they say that the minimum spend is $70/person, but this comes with free beach towels, access to bathrooms and showers, and a day bed right on the beach. We spent 2 days at Ziggys, and didnt even spend the minimum so they didnt really enforce it. The first day we spent $114 (8 beers, water, lunch for 2), the second day we spent $128 (basically the same items). At Kanan, they charge $60 per person, but charge your card before hand and its basically credit throughout the day. This also comes with all the amenities and a day bed. Very relaxing, we had so much fun at the beach clubs.
Excursions: We booked a full day excursion through Trip Advisor. There are hundreds of options, but we looked at reviews/prices and chose the one that had the best reviews with a reasonable price. The cost was $125usd per person, plus a $30 tip for our guide and driver. They picked us up and dropped us off right at our Airbnb which was a big factor as well. The package included a trip to the Tulum Mayan Ruins. This is something you just have to do, although it was pretty crowded. Next we went snorkeling and saw some turtles, reefs, stingrays and other cool fish species. Finally we went to a Cenote which was sick! The package included a free lunch and snacks throughout the day. Our guide was amazing and spoke english very well. Our group was 12 people so it didn't feel too crowded.
Summary: Very cliche, but Tulum is really what you make of it. A notable takeaway that is a common thread on this page is that yes there is a TON of construction. Was it take away from our overall experience? No. Was it a bit of an eye sore? Yes.
As a couple, we spent around $2700 from start to finish (including travel). If you're looking to splurge and party, book your stay in the hotel zone. Hotel zone prices are significantly higher compared to Centro Tulum prices. If you want to experience more local places, and maybe have a quieter experience, I would recommend staying in a neighborhood closer to Tulum such as La Valeta. 7 sur is a MUST! I am not quite sure why some people on this page seem to be so scared and worried about safety? We never felt unsafe but just minded our business and were friendly to people we experienced. We were offered drugs one time, and that was when we were out at night in the hotel zone. We just kept walking and pretended like we didn't hear him. Ask for receipts every time you use your card, this can be a deterrent for any scams. If you live under a rock and are not used to experiencing people from different walks of life, well maybe don't go to Tulum lol. I hope this review can help someone in the future looking for information on experiences in Tulum. Thanks for reading!

2024.04.20 04:52 XxOlive April trip report

Just got back last week and thought I’d do a trip report as I found these so helpful before my departure.
We stayed at Windsong and overall I thought we got a pretty good deal. No, I don’t think it’s a true 4 star hotel but I also don’t think shelling out triple the price for the Ritz would have been worth it.
First things first - yes the airport is small but it really wasn’t as bad as people made it out to be. Coming in we were the first flight in so getting through was a breeze. On the way back we flew out on a Saturday and it was crowded but we still made it through within 30 minutes. You can get the fast pass or whatever it’s called at the airport so I would hold off getting it in advance unless you really need it.
Car rental is a must unless you never want to leave the hotel and/or are staying for 3/4 days. Didn’t really see taxis circling around so you would need to call them. We rented a car through Sixt. There was a desk for them and a few others right as we walked out of the airport. They were able to give us an American car with steering wheel on the left which made driving easier. Just watch out for the stray dogs and cats!
Lunch/ Somewhere cafe - terrible, top of my list for worst tacos I’ve ever had. They also didn’t let us see our receipt and asked for additional tip as I later saw they already charged 15%. Omar’s beach hut - beautiful view and good food. Best bang for your buck. Da Conch shack -beautiful and very good shrimp particularly but pricey. Cocovan - went here twice, pretty good. Good for a casual dinner too.
Dinne The Farm at Seven stars - excellent all around. We also had breakfast here. Magnolia - gorgeous view from a hilltop. Napa valley vibes. We were initially going to Mango reef but weren’t feeling it once we got there. Marine room - beautiful, great food. Almond tree - another beautiful place, most expensive meal of the trip.
Beach/ Grace bay - this is where a lot of the hotels are situated and there’s a coral reef. Water can be choppy. Sapodilla bay - you can rent chairs and umbrellas here ($20 for umbrella, $10 per chair) water is calm and shallow. Taylor bay - wow spectacular, calm water and just like a giant sandbar.
Othe Tipping - I’m not sure what’s the deal here. It seemed some places would add a service fee 10-15% but then would also ask for a tip. We tipped at our discretion essentially.
Feel free to ask any questions!
