2024.06.09 21:19 AlexLGames Upheaval - Alex Leone - Old-school Text-based Open World Roguelike Adventure

Hi Games! I'm Alex Leone, a solo developer making Upheaval, an old-school text-based fantasy roguelike adventure with both a graphical and a command line version.
I love games where you get to know the world very well as you play: my favorite game is The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, where you can watch each of the citizens of Clock Town go about their lives over the three-day cycle, and you have opportunities to interfere in their lives for better or for worse.
I wanted to make a game like that, where the player is free to interfere with the characters and experiment with how different actions affect the people and world around them. I have some experience making text games, so I went in that direction! I'm still adding content and features, but you can play an early demo of the game on Steam and itch.io.
From the Steam page:
Upheaval is a text-based open world roguelike adventure. Match wits with a world-hopping Magician as you explore the wilds around your remote village, track down magic treasures, and aid or disrupt factions. Be ready: Upheaval is coming!
If you want to support the project or just get notified when I'm done with it, wishlist it on Steam. Thanks!

Comments: Kylea Gomez is lazy. In the year I have watched her lies unfold, there is always an excuse why she cannot complete activities of daily living. She lives in a small apartment, is not a caregiver, does not attend school, volunteer in her community, etc. Refusing to crate BB to accomplish tasks is her choice and a detriment to the dog. Using alleged vet bills as the reason is a poor excuse. A few thousand dollars is a drop in the bucket for this important public figure, influencer, and celebrity. 🌟 đŸ“· 😉
In regards to her kindness speech:
Kylea Danielle (Welton) Gomez worships at the idol of self. If you need visual evidence, please see the 1st image of the balloon arch shrine she built herself for Easter. ✝ She claims she is unable to attend church for a variety of reasons. She lives in a state of self-pity and is easily offended. Due to her self-centeredness and selfishness, she is unable to enjoy special experiences with her family and during travel. Her ego is challenged and she cannot control everyone and everything. She lives in fear of accountability, the truth, food, and the scale. I view her content as self-righteous service vs true service. She wants your blind adoration and affirmation for all of her choices. Anything else will not be tolerated.
One day, she will be a distant memory. Until then, I will continue my mission for Kylea Gomez to be demonetized and deplatformed. Meta, take action.

2024.06.09 20:48 gringuide Overbite Treatment: Identifying the Need for Braces

Determining whether an overbite requires braces involves a careful assessment of symptoms and signs that indicate the necessity for orthodontic intervention. Overbites, characterized by the upper teeth significantly overlapping the lower teeth, can manifest through various functional and aesthetic issues.
One of the primary indicators that braces may be needed is difficulty in biting and chewing. Individuals with significant overbites often find it challenging to properly align their teeth to break down food, leading to inefficient chewing and potential digestive issues. This difficulty can also contribute to uneven wear on the teeth, exacerbating dental health concerns over time.
Speech impediments are another critical symptom of an overbite. Misalignment of the teeth can affect the way sounds are produced, leading to speech difficulties such as lisping or unclear articulation. These impediments can impact communication skills and overall confidence, particularly in social and professional settings.
Aesthetic concerns are also a common reason for seeking orthodontic treatment for overbites. The noticeable overlap of teeth can affect the appearance of one’s smile and facial profile, leading to self-consciousness and reduced self-esteem. Correcting an overbite with braces not only improves dental function but also enhances facial aesthetics, contributing to a more balanced and pleasing appearance.
The role of a dentist or orthodontist is crucial in diagnosing an overbite and determining the best course of action. During a routine dental examination, a dentist may identify signs of an overbite and refer the patient to an orthodontist for a more specialized assessment. The orthodontist will conduct a thorough evaluation, including X-rays and dental impressions, to understand the severity of the overbite and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
In summary, recognizing the need for braces to correct an overbite involves understanding the functional and aesthetic issues it presents. Difficulty in biting and chewing, speech impediments, and concerns about appearance are key indicators that orthodontic intervention may be necessary. Consulting with a dental professional is essential to obtain a proper diagnosis and explore effective treatment options.

Braces Types to Correct Overbite

When it comes to correcting overbites, various types of braces are available, each presenting unique advantages and potential drawbacks. Understanding these options can help individuals make informed decisions about their treatment plan.

1. Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common and widely recognized form of orthodontic treatment. These braces use metal brackets and wires to gradually move teeth into their correct positions. The primary advantage of metal braces is their effectiveness in treating severe overbites. They are highly durable and can correct a wide range of dental issues. However, their noticeable appearance and potential discomfort are considered drawbacks by many patients.

2. Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces function similarly to metal braces but use clear or tooth-colored brackets, making them less conspicuous. These braces are a popular choice for individuals seeking a more aesthetically pleasing option while still benefiting from the effectiveness of traditional braces. While ceramic braces are less noticeable, they can be more fragile and may require more diligent oral hygiene to avoid staining.

3. Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are placed on the inside surface of the teeth, making them virtually invisible from the outside. This makes them an attractive option for those concerned about the appearance of braces. They are just as effective as traditional braces in correcting overbites. However, lingual braces can be more challenging to clean, may cause initial discomfort to the tongue, and typically require a higher level of expertise to install, which can increase treatment costs.

4. Clear Aligners

Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, offer a modern and discreet solution for overbite correction. These removable aligners are custom-made to fit snugly over the teeth and are replaced every few weeks to gradually shift teeth into place. Clear aligners are nearly invisible and can be removed for eating and cleaning, providing convenience and comfort. However, they may not be suitable for severe overbites and require significant discipline to wear the aligners for the recommended 20-22 hours per day.
Each type of braces offers distinct benefits and potential limitations. The choice of treatment depends on individual preferences, the severity of the overbite, and professional recommendations from an orthodontist.

Four Victorious Cruxes, also known as Four Noble Truths in English speaking world, are Bitter Crux, Aggregate Crux, Salvation Crux, and Path Crux. Bitter Crux talks about that the Three-Grand Great-Grand Worlds (cf. fig. 13.0) of sentient phenomena are a great bitter aggregate. Aggregate Crux says that the cause of the bitter for mundane beings is aggregate, gathering. Salvation Crux talks of the bitterness of sentient beings can be eliminated, and there is a Nirvana (cf. fig. 13.0-2), where there is absolutely no bitter. Path Crux describes the way to end bitter and gain salvation. Among the four victorious cruxes, the bitter crux is the greatest, it can assimilate other three cruxes.

13.1 Desire Boundary (fig.13.0-23)

The word boundary means cause, seed, is one of the four big seeds (cf. 11.2 Four Big Seeds) of the Tree of Life. Desire Boundary, as shown in Illustrations 13.0-23, means that all beings in this realm, are born from the seeds of desires, have the five desires of color, sound, smell, taste, and touch, such as eating, sleeping, and sexual intercourse. Are there any who have no desires? Figs. -5 to -8 are Color Boundary, where there is no difference between men and women, and there is no desire for food, drink, or sleep. Figs. -1 to -4 are Colorless Boundary, which are pure conscious states, with no bodily feelings, so naturally there is no need at all for food, drink, sleep, or sexual intercourse.
Based on the observance or violation of the Ten Fundamental Precepts, Ancient Virtues divided all living beings into six categories, called the six paths, or six interests. The Ten Fundamental Precepts can also be divided into the Ten Ferocious Precepts and the Ten Benevolent Precepts. The ten ferocious precepts are: 1. killing, 2. stealing, 3. heretical sexual conduction, 4. delusional speech, 5. flowery speech, 6. ferocious speech, 7. two-tongue, 8. stingy greed, 9. hatred irritation, and 10. heretic. According to the degree of violation of the ten ferocious precepts, the ancients divided the ferocious sentient beings into three categories called the Three Ferocious Interests (cf. figs. -22 to -20), or the Three Ferocious Paths, which are the hell interests, the livestock interests, and the hungry ghost interests.
Not committing the above ten ferocities are the Ten Benevolences: (1) not to kill, or not only not to kill but also to save lives; (2) not to steal, or not only not to steal but also to practice donation; (3) not to commit heretical sex, or not only not to commit heretical sex but also to practice immaculateness. The previous three precepts are body precepts that govern bodily physical behavior. What is it to refrain from killing? Such as one does not kill personally, does not help others to kill, does not manufacture or transport weapons and equipment for killing, does not recommend encourage and eulogize death.
(4) not to speak delusionally, or not only not to muddle and deceive, but also to speak truthfully; (5) not to use flowery speech, or not only not to seduce, but also to speak for the benefit of others. (6) not to speak of coarse ferocious language, or not only not to speak ferociously, but also to speak kindly to console; (7) not to two-tongue, not only not to sow discord, but also to conciliate and harmonize. The four are oral precepts.
(8) not to be stingy greed, or not only not to be stingily greed, but also to perform donation; (9) not to be resentfully irritated, or not only not to be angry, but also to be able to bear merciful spell; (10) not to be heretical, or not only not to be heretical, but also be able to believe and implement the causes and fruits of the Four Victorious Cruxes. The three are intentional precepts.
According to the degree of violation of these Ten Good Precepts, Ancient Virtues divided the good people into three categories, namely, the Asura Interests (cf. fig. -19), the Human Interests (cf. fig. -18), and the Sky Interests (cf. figs. -15 to -1). The six Interests are also known as the Six Paths; the Paths mean that such people are traveling on the road to hell, hungry ghost, and so on places. These six interests are further analyzed and identified below in this chapter.

2024.06.09 19:44 BuckeyeReason Tuesday Congressional special election: Democracy? Reproductive rights? Climate change?

https://ballotpedia.org/Ohio%27s_6th_Congressional_District_special_election,_2024
https://ballotpedia.org/Ohio%27s_6th_Congressional_District#District_map
Turnout for special elections are low. Will champions of democracy, reproductive rights, and protecting the environment bother to vote on Tuesday for William Kripchak, a superb candidate, in the District 6 special election?
https://www.kripchak.com/about
Opponents of gerrymandering and voter suppression should eagerly vote for Kripchak. Congressional Republicans consistently oppose gerrymandering reform and efforts to block voter suppression laws. Republicans, especially in Ohio, use fake claims of voter fraud especially to making voting more difficult.
https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/analysis-opinion/road-not-taken-gerrymandering
https://www.reddit.com/Ohio/comments/1d7xwr6/ohios_limits_on_who_can_return_an_absentee_ballot/
Republicans have elected a Speaker of the House who favors abortion bans, and also wants to revoke the Department of Defense policy of financing travel to other states for abortions when personnel are stationed in states with restrictive abortion rights. Speaker Mike Johnson even cosponsored a federal heartbeat bill, much like the one rejected by Ohio voters last November when they passed a reproductive rights Ohio Constitutional amendment. The House Speaker is second in the line of succession to the Presidency, after the Vice President.
< Additionally, he voted against the Right to Contraception Act, which would protect access to birth control. This was passed in the House in July 2022.>>

Unfortunately, Democrats, including Kripchak, don't sufficiently champion efforts to combat climate change, arguably the top issue confronting mankind and all Americans. Just consider the impacts on food production, as global fisheries collapse due to accelerating ocean heat levels, and livestock and crop production increasingly are threatened.

2024.06.09 19:40 PlatinumRaptor95 POLICE

My father always wanted me to become a police officer. Who could blame him? His dad, who also happened to be my grandfather, was shot by a random man one day when my father was just 12 years old. He saw everything with his own eyes. It must’ve been traumatizing to him.
“My dad was just watering the plants.” He would often say, “Then a masked man in a white van rolled down his window and shot him out of nowhere.”
“His body fell to the ground and I quickly ran outside.” He’d continue, “Blood started coming out of the gunshot wound. I shouted as loud as I can until my mom arrived. My mom broke down in tears. My dad, with his last, dying breaths told me ‘Avenge my death, become a police officer, so no one else would have to endure the pain you’re feeling’.”
My father eventually did not become a police officer due to financial constraints. He ended up dropping out of high school a few years after my grandfather’s death. He started working in McDonald’s just to be able to have enough money to feed my grandmother. My grandmother at the time had dementia and had to resign from her job as an accountant because of it.
My father then met his future wife, who also happened to be my mother, in McDonald’s. No, my mother was not a McDonald’s employee, but they started talking when my mom lined up in front of the cashier my dad was stationed in to order a Big Mac and some fries. My father never told me what happened next. He always just told me that it was love at first sight and they started going out the following day. After a week, my dad left McDonald’s to apply for a job in the same place where my mom was working at the time, the KFC across the street.
My father’s dream to become a police officer was then transferred onto me. Even when I was still barely able to walk or talk, he would often tell me that I should become a police officer. At the time, I didn’t know what he meant. I don’t think newborns are familiar with the concept of a police officer. Despite that, I didn’t ask any questions. I eventually took up a Criminology program in college and graduated a year ago.
Sadly, before I graduated, my father developed dementia, just like my grandmother. He eventually forgot that I was taking up Criminology and for some reason thought I was a Formula One driver. He also forgot that he wanted me to become a police officer but my mom still encouraged me to become one. She kept telling me: “Your dad may not show it, but deep inside his original aspirations for you are still there.”
He passed away from Leukemia a few months ago. It’s such a shame that he’s not here today to hear this speech but I’m pretty sure he’s listening from wherever he is right now. Sorry dad, I am not a Formula One driver, but I just finished police academy and now I’m a legitimate police officer. Thank you.
“Nice speech, Ethan, congrats!” Carlisle, one of my closest friends, told me while I was going down the stage.
“Thanks, man.” I replied to him, “Not gonna lie, I was kinda nervous even if I practiced this speech for a month, but at least it’s done now”
“I would still be nervous if I were you. I heard you’ll be assigned to the Memphis Police Department.”
“Why would I be nervous?”
“Memphis has the highest crime rate in the country. It’s dangerous out there.”
“I’m literally the best young police officer the country has to offer. If I can’t do it then who can?”
“Well, that’s true. Just be safe out there, okay?” He said as he patted me on the back.
“I will don’t worry.”
After two days, I finally arrived in Memphis. I was greeted by the chief of the Memphis Police Department, Ryan McGruder.
“Mr. Ethan Blight?” He asked me.
“Yes, I am.” I replied as I shook his hand, “You must be Chief McGruder?”
“That’s correct. Come with me, let’s head to the station.”
The main headquarters of the Memphis Police Department was around 20 minutes away from the airport. I took this time to look around as it was my first time in Memphis.
“Are you scared?” Chief McGruder asked me.
“Scared of what?” I asked in return.
“I’m sure you know how dangerous Memphis is.”
“That doesn’t scare me too much. I know what I signed up for.”
“That’s good to hear.”
Once I arrived at the headquarters, I was greeted by a man and a woman who both seem to be in their mid-30s.
“This is Corporal Tommy Allen and Lieutenant Nesty Garland.” Chief McGruder said.
“I’m Ethan Blight.” I said as I shook their hands.
“You’ll be under Lieutenant Garland’s supervision for a few months” Chief McGruder followed, “She’s also supervising another fresh grad so I hope you all get along well.”
I followed Lieutenant Garland into her workstation. As soon as we got there, she introduced me to the other fresh grad she was supervising.
“This is Ryan Chambers. You’ll both be under my supervision for some time.” Lieutenant Garland said, “And I prefer to keep it casual here in my unit so there’s no need to say each other’s titles. That means you can just call me Nesty.”
Ryan stood up from his chair and shook my hand.
“I look forward to working with you, Ethan.” He said.
“Me too!”
After a few days of settling in, Ryan and I finally got to work on our first ever case. We were asked to investigate a robbery that occurred at a local appliance store. While on the way to the appliance store, he told me about a contest the police department has every year. It’s a contest which determines who the best police officer for the year is. The winner is chosen based off performance, effectiveness, and number of cases solved.
“Who are the frontrunners?” I asked.
“I heard Nesty has been good this year but I don’t think she’ll win.” Ryan replied, “I think Corporal Allen might win, he really wants that promotion.”
“You’re not supporting our own supervisor?”
“It’s not that I don’t like her, it’s just that Corporal Allen seems better.”
“In my opinion, I think Nesty would win. I’ve seen Corporal Allen a lot but Nesty just has different aura, you know? She’s very passionate and assertive especially in the office place.”
“Corporal Allen has solved more cases this year than her. I think the number is twice as more.”
“It’s not always about the quantity.” I replied, “I think whoever solves the current case with the wanted drug dealer gets the award.”
“I heard that Corporal Allen is already preparing to take on that case. Haven’t heard anything from Nesty’s side yet.”
“We’ll see, I still feel like Nesty should win.”
After a few minutes of driving, we got to the appliance store. Outside the store was the manager who was waiting for us.
“Can you tell us what happened here?” I asked the manager.
“A man just suddenly entered the store and pointed a gun towards one of our employees.” The manager said, “He asked for all the money in the cash register and we had no choice but to comply.”
“How much did he get?”
“Around $8000.”
“Do you have a recording of the incident?” Ryan asked.
“Yes, come with me.”
The manager led us to the back and showed us the recording of the robbery. The suspect wasn’t wearing a mask which is kinda stupid if you ask me but it makes our jobs easier.
“Can you zoom in on his face?” I asked.
The manager then proceeded to pause the recording to zoom in.
“Doesn’t that look like that drug dealer we were talking about earlier?” Ryan asked me.
“You know what, I think you’re right.” I replied, “So do you think these cases are connected?”
“Maybe he needed the money to buy more drugs.” Ryan said, “Wait, I have an idea. What if we solve this case ourselves and maybe, just maybe, they give us the award.”
“I just started this week, no way they give me the award.”
“I guess it’s gonna be me then.” Ryan chuckled.
“I doubt it, and besides, I’m pretty sure Nesty is already on her way to solve the case.”
“What do you mean Nesty? I’m sure it’s Corporal Allen who’s on the way.”
“Fine, how about let’s just find out ourselves. Sir, do you know which way the suspect went?” I asked the manager.
“Aside from the money, he also happened to steal one of our high-end laptops. That laptop was just used in a live demo earlier today and it conveniently has GPS that we’re tracking right now.” The manager said, as he pulled out his phone, “He’s about 5 kilometers east of us right now and it seems that he isn’t moving.”
Ryan and I both rushed into the car and drove to his location as fast as we can. We asked the manager if we could borrow the phone that he was using to track the laptop so we can find the suspect easier. After a few minutes of driving, we arrived at a warehouse where we think the suspect is hiding. Outside the warehouse was a car which we think belongs to the suspect. We busted open the car’s trunk and saw a bag full of cash and a brand-new laptop.
“Yup, I think this is his.” I said, “He must be inside the warehouse then.”
“So, what are we waiting for?” Ryan replied.
We rushed towards the warehouse and tried to find a way in. The front door was locked so we went around to look for any open windows. We found one window which we think we can fit through but as soon as we were climbing up to reach it, we heard gunshots. We climbed up faster to see what was going on and once we got inside, we saw a man whose legs were bleeding from a gunshot wound.
“That looks like the suspect, right?” I asked.
“I think so.” Ryan answered, “But who shot him?”
We looked around then suddenly I saw a figure holding a gun at the suspect.
“There!” I shouted, “It’s a police officer.”
The figure slowly walked towards the wounded suspect. As it walked closer, sunlight coming down from the ceiling revealed who their true identity.
“I don’t believe it.” Ryan said, “Is that Nesty?”
I took a closer look and he was right. It was Nesty. I looked towards Ryan and shouted: “Ha! Nesty is the best police, see?”

2024.06.09 19:08 newvegasfan69 Help with crashes

Hello fellow NV fans!
I come to you in an effort to (possibly) fix the near constant crashing of my NV.
It crashes around 30-40 minutes playing OR in specific areas wich I cannot go through, i.e. McCarran interior around Col. Hsu, The Mojave Outpost interior around Maj. Knight and Ranger Jackson.
I am aware that certain mods should be a no-go together like New California and TTW, for instance. My intention with adding specifically New California was cause I wanted a few specific armors and such.
Looking for any specific help or general directions and knowledge in this area.
PS: have lots of crash logs.
Thanks in advance.

2024.06.09 19:06 Sparticuse Boardgames at Fox Den in Burnsville

This is an open invite to join me at Fox Den for boardgames on June 14th. I will arrive around 6 pm and play 15-30 minute games with whoever is there until 7 pm when we'll figure out what longer games to play. You'll know me by my bushy beard, bald head, and costco/ikea bag of games. I'm told that's not enough info sometimes so I'll try to get a table closer to the food counter.
A lot of people on this subreddit talk about how hard it is to meet people so to that end I make a point to bring welcoming games in addition to the more complex games. I want to make sure everyone can find a game they'll enjoy, plus Fox Den has a great demo game selection and a few of the regulars bring their own games as well.

Opening Speech:
Mr Speaker,
I welcome the privilege I have been given to open this debate, bringing attention and debate to a subject that has seldom seen debate in this House in the last 10 years.
Britain has a proud agricultural and horticultural history, founded on the principles that enabled Britain to be one of the foremost exporters of fabrics for around a Century. This bill is founded on those same principles, and will enable the sheep and wool industry to continue for years and decades to come.
A core part of this bill is sustainability. Now, this has double meanings. There is environmental sustainability, and the use of the word in the sense of how well the industry can maintain itself long into the future. Particularly in recent years there have been problems with the industry maintaining its competitiveness and as a result the British sheep industry has very much pivoted towards primarily meat production. This pivot, as a result of uncompetitiveness, is something that this bill is intending to help tackle.
In the previous few decades, the prevalence of so-called fast-fashion has grown and grown. Cheap clothes produced on a pence-per-hour wage, shipped in cheaply and “drop-shipped” to your door, designed for a handful of wears then thrown away. I personally recall during university my housemate saying how she needed to buy a new outfit for whatever night out she was going on next, and this is profoundly wasteful. These clothes are produced at high environmental expense, in highly unethical circumstances and we must create an alternative.
That alternative is fabrics produced closer to home, especially for consumers in the UK. The reason why wool was traditionally the fabric used for fine clothes and linen for cheaper and more daily use clothes. Even when cotton began to be imported, it was reserved for the wealthy as it was highly costly to import. In order to achieve net-zero, we must begin to seriously begin considering how we can fulfil the majority of our textile needs closer to home, and reverse the pivot of the British Wool industry towards solely meat production.
Thus, Mr Speaker, we arrive at this bill. This bill puts all of what I have said already into practice, setting up a government-backed commission to advise on policy changes necessary to safeguard the British wool industry and ensure its sustainability. Further, we have set up a new subsidy scheme to be operated by the British Investment Bank that will be responsible for appropriately subsidising wool producers to deliver innovation and ensure resilience.
I commend this bill to the House and wish to see it’s swift passage.
This debate will close on 12th June at 10PM BST.

2024.06.09 18:01 impishDullahan Speedlang 19 Showcase

Good marrow, bonelickers!
Early last month I announced the 19th Speedlang Challenge. I broke the mould with it a little bit by confining how the ambitious among you would actually put together your speedlangs rather than defining a number of requisite features. The bulk of this process had speedlangers root all their creative linguistic decisions in a small set of natlangs, and these natlangs specifically had to be native to areas representative of a chosen clade of organisms. To ensure the clade of organisms was well represented, I also asked for a number of lexical items and conceptual metaphors that had to be specifically inspired by the clade in some way, as well as some aspect of the phonology.
Like last time, I'll provide my thoughts about what I think makes each submission special and the features I particularly like. Afterwards, I'll quickly review what was inspired by the chosen clade, in case that has any bearing on what you kind readers might like to check out, and give out brownie points for any easter eggs I spot, whether intended or not.
Overall this has been a deeply creative round of submissions and I learned a lot, both things I set out to achieve when I thought up this particular challenge. I hope it was just as rewarding a challenge for everyone who submitted as it was for me getting to read up on each entry, and I hope it will be the same for anyone who reads up on them, too.

Seba BĂ sa by Miacomet

Gyps (griffon vultures); Chamic, Bengali, Santali & Mundari
With a name including the element BĂ sa, I knew this had to have Indic flavours of one sort of another, and indeed it does! This conlang is largely Austronesian in origin with sound changes from Old Cham, but it has a lot of Bengali influence and is well situated in the Indian subcontinent, and I greatly appreciate the nod to Parsi funerary traditions as an inspiring reason for choosing Gyps. Amusingly, this conlang has many features that fit right into the inspiration for the last speedlang challenge, which I find just delightful, with some split-S marking, dative enclitics, and grammaticalised constructions for simultaneous and sequential events, and light pronouns. Therebeside, the historical clipping, CVK syllable structure, postpositional pronouns, and aspectual auxiliaries speak to sensibilities in my own conlanging, and the dissimilation processes in some of the affixes are a nice touch, too. I'm also a big of fan just how the split-S system is implicated in some verbal polysemy, and I really like how the few voices seem kinda muddy but have clear use cases. What really sets this conlang apart, though, is the consideration paid to the effect of prestige languages. Some phonemes are restricted to loanwords from the local prestige language, and one is even only confined to prestige language-educated speakers, which causes some allophony other speakers don't have. Loaning processes are detailed, too, and the number and classifier system also draws nice lines along the prestige axis with a total of 3 parallel number systems, spread out across both divisions of native vs. loaned classifiers, which themselves have specific semantic domains they each classify, and across divisions of prestige language education. The story at the end, too, is a real treat: it's a translation of Hindu vulture myth, perfect for this project.
Seba BĂ sa's Gyps-inspired phonology includes the development of creaky voice from the loss of glottals, glottalised consonants, and final /s/ in Old Cham to recall vulture cries. It's inspired lexicon includes some fun polysemy of vulture behaviours like circling = waiting or sheepling = looking for something desirable. I'm also a big fan of kite (the bird) = messy eater. It's inspired conceptual metaphors include dividing the beginning, middle, and end of a process into eating skin, meat, and bones, respectively, and equating head height/position with one's health or comfortableness as inspired by how vultures droop their heads when ill.
We're starting off string with double brownie points for meeting both the space epic easter egg by calquing the Ewokese word for 'outsider' and the empress easter egg by referring to Buddha's Birthday!

Kogëdek by u/Porpoise_God

Setonix & Macropodidae more generally (quokkas + kangaroos & wallabies); Noongar, Pitjantjatjara, Wajarri, Guugu Yimithirr, Miriwoong, Guniyandi, Dyirbal, Mbabaram
Aside from the one splant you'll soon see, I think this entry gets the prize for the most unique chosen clade by being A) not a bird, and B) not an ungulate. As great as birds are, quokkas are pretty amazing, too. I'm not too familiar with Pama-Nyungan languages but this did a good job of affecting some of the features I've come to know them for, including but not limited to the phonological natural classes of peripheral vs. coronal, coverb constructions, and the word for 'dog' bearing a striking similarity to English. Split-ergativity features across the noun-pronoun axis, and there's a unique set of duals that specifically refer to sibling, parent-child, or spousal pairs of individuals that I might have to steal for myself. The case marking includes a lative case I haven't seen before, and implicates the comitative in a neat way in comparative constructions. I also appreciate the what-looks-to-be resumptive subject pronominal proclitics; very speedlang 18, and a great example of a fossilised mistake, which I always love to see! The verbs also feature multiple conjugations, and the imperative is implicated for its tenselessness in certain subclause constructions, which has a certain type of quirkiness I'd expect out of some past speedlang challenges.
Kogëdek's Setonix-inspired phonology included a /ç/ in the proto-lang, which bears some resemblance to quokka calls, although it was lost to /s/ and /x/ in the modern language. The inspired lexical entries include roots for different kinds of macropods and styles of jumping, and conflates jumping with breathing. Some of the idioms include "pouch-baby" for pejorative "mama's-boy" and using kangaroo badassery as a metaphor for all sorts of less than ideal situations.
Brownie points for a particularly insidious word-form for 'father'.

Yatakang by Lichen

Bubalus (water buffaloes); Hindi-Urdu, Thai, Vietnamese, Khmer, Burmese, Malay
This one's a little rough around the edges, but it's a good foundation for a nice mix of both SEA features, like the isolating morphosyntax, and unique features, like the class agreement system. It's also got clicks limited to avoidance speech! Diachronics from a proto-lang where considered, and I really like how the typologies of the inspo langs were used as targets for the sound changes. I'll have to keep this workflow in mind! Some of the sound changes include expanding the number of stop contrasts to match the average number of contrasts, or eroding the number of vowels to match that of Malay. Phonotactics were carefully considered with full structures for both mono- and disyllables as well as bare roots vs. compound stems. Grammatically, morphology is mostly limited to a host of different reduplication patterns, which in itself is something I'd really like to see more of! Where this really shines, though, is with its agreement system: nouns are sorted into a 3x2 matrix of 6 classes, portmanteau agreement particles mark for the class of both the subject and the object, the system implicates the social hierarchies common to many SEA languages, and the position of the particle marks modality. Incredibly inspired to pack all that into a set of maybe 36 particles, if you ask me, never mind how it helps to disambiguate fluid word class and how it might be implicated in future plans for Indonesian object-oriented verbs. I'm also a fan of how the temporal question verb patterns like an agreement particle to mark for tense by co-opting the modality marking. We also get some prosody-syntax interfacing with different pitch contours at clause boundaries operating as different sorts of conjunctions.
Yatakang's Bubalus-inspired phonology includes a combination of creaky voice and syllabic nasals to affect a mooing phonaesthetic. The lexical entries exhibit some nice semantic drift from water buffalo activities and behaviours towards more human behaviours, and the planned phrase of hat-hand stroke fur for "suddenly realise a problem, and then pretend there isn't one" just feels exactly like an observation a water buffalo would make observing its human, which I really like. The inspired metaphors are also simple and straightforward, likening roundedness to goodness or knowledge to food, which makes for some brilliantly idiomatic language like "I ate the book" to mean "I read and understood the contents of the book."
Extra brownie points for including both halves of the space epic easter egg to placate both sides of nerddom; the term 'tax-man' is everything it ought to be.

Kurikiri by Jjommoma

Casuariiformes (cassowaries and emus); Dhuwal, Motu, Tok Pisin
Compared to most other entries, this one's very short and sweet with some Australian sounds and some head-final Papuan grammar (however loose a description that is). That being said, Kurikiri is very inventive in being partially signed with much of its grammatical marking encoded by actions done with the foot, including number, case, definiteness, and some basic TAM.
Aside from the cassowary foot action grammar markers, as well as some lexical entries there-related, Kurikiri also equates flightedness to being ostentatious, disdaining flighted birds out of envy, which I think is a fun thought process for these terrestrially confined birds. There's also some neat phonosemantics in the taboo word for predator being especially difficult to pronounce.
This wasn't the intent, but I'm giving some space epic brownie points for the foot grammar if for nothing else than that it reminds me of Paul Frommer's Thark from John Carter and its telepathic grammatical and verbal lexical expression.

Whaynisiday by u/Fimii

Spheniscidae (penguins); Māori, Xhosa, Quechua
What do you do when the entire population of penguins achieves human-like levels of intelligence after some gene splicing and they start calling for a language to call their own? Why, you do exactly what the prompt of this challenge asks for and combine the languages native to the homeland of the blue, african, and humboldt penguins! The write up for this conlang does a great job of pointing out what features are from which language exactly, and plays a fun balancing game between some of the phonological and grammatical extremes in its sourcelangs. In so doing it has a few quirks that really tickle the intersection of my linguist and conlanger venn diagram, specifically the presence of what I'd have to interpret as onset morae, as well as semantic noun class marked solely through agreement (which is very Varamm, so I'm not at all biased towards it). There's a handful of fun, rare cases, and the simulative mood fits right into the inspirations for the last challenge to create some vaguely Tupian simultaneous actions. There's a bunch more little grammatical bits that are fun, but impressionistically I appreciate how the more isolating grammar of Māori was incorporated into the synthetic common ground of the other 2 sourcelangs.
Whaynisiday's Spheniscidae-inspired phonology includes a couple syringeal sounds to complement the otherwise human capable inventory. The highlighted lexical entries pay special attention to how penguins locomote with basic stems for different kinds of movement options both on land and in the water, as well as a split in breathing for whether its on land at rest or in the water being active. The conceptual metaphors include a great model of time with the past on land and the future in the inky depths, and the very adorable notion that safety = community, and so naturally a farewell would be a wish of friendship.

Poro by The Inky Baroness

Rangifer tarandus subsp. (domestic reindeers); Proto-Samic, Komi-Zyrian, Tundra Nenets, Chukchi
Where do I even begin with this one? I was excited to read this one when I first received it, but it was even better than I could have hoped when I got round to reading it! Although, not for any linguistic reasons: the first half of the doc reminds me of Gillian Teft's Anthro-Vision as an anthropological account of reindeers written by a fictitious Finnish researcher rather than any sort of sketched reference grammar, which I love dearly. The latter half, meanwhile, goes into great detail about what went into the first half, including all sorts of motivations or reasons for the decisions made. Some diachrony is detailed, as well as the effects of language contact rooted in actual historical events relevant to the chosen sourcelangs, which is just great to see. I loved the ways in which each of the different sourcelangs were all represented in the final product with it being Samic in origin but including some phonological and grammatical borrowings from Komi and Nenets like the lack of consonant gradation, the verb-final syntax, some vowel changes, and a fantastic predestinative affix that interacts with the conceptualisation of time in some neat ways. All the while, care was taken to do a wealth of research at every step in the process with a fairly extensive bibliography. Hoof clicks all around for this one!
Poro's Rangifer-inspired phonology includes a deer bellow as some sort of epiglottal obstruent that actually patterns with the Nenets glottal stop, as well as some other approximated reindeer vocalisations including what I presume to be grunts or chuffs, both oral and nasal. Care was also taken to think about what a fully reindeerised descendant of Proto-Samic would look like as accords with the included etiological myth for reindeers and reindeer husbandry, but this was well beyond the scope of a speedlang. The lexical entries include all sorts of terms for reindeer physiology, including but not limited to antler velvet, different types of vocalisations, and hoof clicks. These lexical entries feature in some wonderful idioms using antlers to describe social hierarchy, useful- or uselessness, and glibness or malicious intent, as well as an equivalent to "when pigs fly": "to catch a bird between one's hooves."
Extra brownie points both for the nominal hierarchical exaltation of mothers baked into reindeer culture and inclusion of an anti-imperialist message in promoting the research of the under-represented and often stigmatised language and culture of traditionally reindeer herding peoples. Also do keep an eye out for Dr. Dolittle easter eggs: Inky will reward you handsomely if you can spot one!

Kiwi by NerpNerp

Apteryx & Novaeratitae more broadly (kiwis + cassowaries & emus); English, Māori, Traditional Tiwi, Miriwoong, Bardi
Given the number of bird entries with Indo-Pacific flavours, I'm almost half surprised this was the only kiwi entry: they're such good birbs! As might be expected, this conlang endeared itself to me just as its namesake does. The phonology has all sorts of trills and rhotics, and limits itself to high vowels; it's also got some neat phrase level prosody to mark different sorts of modal information and focus, even including an intrusive glottal stop at the sentence level. Noun incorporation is varied and detailed, and can create some polysynthetic constructions as a consequence of just how exactly the rest of the otherwise fairly analytic morphosyntax works. I'm a particular fan of the deictic categories including 7 different degrees of deixis characterising both distance and motion, and I'm also a fan of of the grammaticalised time of day. Heximal numbers and coverb constructions also feature. There's even a kiwi-capable featural alphabet that each of the examples show off!
Kiwi's Apteryx-inspired phonology includes the trills and high vowels being inspired by kiwi calls and I imagine a little of their anatomy with those long, thin bills. The inspired lexemes include specific types of smells humans can't detect at the expense of any colour terms, reflecting kiwis nocturnal, smell-based lifestyles. The idioms for "a long time ago" or "once upon a time" is absolutely delightful--"when kiwis flew"--and the grammaticalised time of day subdivides the night but not the day, as might be expected from a nocturnal beastie.

Asamiin by Christian Evans

Asamina (pawpaws); Ottawa, Unami, Tuscarora, Mikasuki, Chitimacha, Timucua
The speech that nourishes! And a splant, too, no less; I was hoping for at least one of these! This one's made all the better by delving into some Eastern North American languages and I really like the flavours this lends itself to. Syncope is abound with all sorts of morphological obfuscation through detailed phonological processes, and animacy plays a key role in the verb complex. Care was also taken to find a phonological common ground between all the sourcelangs, which made for a really interesting set of vowels with a basic 6 vowel inventory, but with 2 nasal vowels that can surface as vocalic allophones to the nasal consonants. The grammar is fairly straightforward but has a few quirks that I really appreciate, including but not limited to the fluid O placement to make for some syntactic focusing strategies I so adore and the optional, enclitic case marking narrowed by various postpositions used as another, separate means of focus. Overall just really well laid out and the formatting is really cute, something I've now come to expect after Yumpịku last time.
Asamiin's Asamina-inspired phonology includes a pharyngeal approximant to recall the really long taproot pawpaws grow, as well as regressive sibilant harmony to recall the mimicry the flowers employ to attract pollinators, both of which are some really inspired departures from the sourcelangs.

EkaangÀq by Atyx

Haliaeetus pelagicus (Steller's sea eagle); Chukchi, Alyutor, Koryak, Itelmen, Ainu, Nivkh, Evenki, Uilta
A bird that escapes any Indo-Pacific flavours? Well I'll be! Instead of South Pacific this one gives all sorts of North Pacific energy being spoken by a population of eaglefolk native to the Sea of Okhotsk and representative of the languages spoken along its coasts. The Ainu flavours are especially strong with both an Ainu-based consonant inventory and a kana orthography, among others. The vowels also show some interesting lopsidedness with 2 creaky vowels complementing an otherwise fairly straightforward 6 vowel system that feature in a front-back vowel harmony system, though I'm a real fan of the sandhi rules at word boundaries that cause all sorts of fun consonant alternations. Word stress is also detailed and has funky placement rules at odds with my understanding of theoretical prosodic processes! Grammatically there's a few quirks that really stand out to me and tickle my curiosity: a dual distinction on the nouns but not in the pronouns, and polypersonal agreement in a transitive alignment system, the only departure from direct, accusative, and/or ergative alignment in this round of submissions. I also appreciate some of the syncretism in the pronouns!
EkkangÀq's Haliaeetus-inspired phonology includes entirely unrounded vowels and a lack of any labial consonants to reflect the speakers have beaks, as well as the 2 creaky vowels as rooted in their physiology, a common theme for this challenge. The lexicon includes some distinctions between diving and eating as it applies to different kinds of prey. The conceptual metaphor, though, I think is really great equating the passage of time with ice: an iceberg calving off a glacier is birth, melting is ageing, and melting all away is dying. Great stuff!
I think I actually have to give negative brownie points for this one: as much as I appreciate 3 separate orthographies (Kana, Cyrillic, Latin) for some historicity, they are all at odds with the anti-imperialism the brownie criterion requires, and there's no girl power to balance it out.

Taqồpaq by accruenewblue

Gallus (jungefowl); Hindi-Urdu, Burmese, Thai, Punjabi, Tamil, Indonesian
I'm a little surprised this is, I think, the only truly tonal submission despite all the SEA birds, and it's less synthetic than most in this round of submissions. In either case, this one does a great job of illustrating some tonogenesis and some recent and still very transparent synthetic developments from a formerly isolating language. The tones are simple registers, but they interact with morae in some neat rightwards reassigning sandhi patterns, and they complement a system of 12 vowels in a 3x2x2 matrix of height, frontedness, and roundedness. There's even some vocalic nasal allophones (which is twice now in this round of submissions), and labial consonant-vowel harmony to boot! Grammatically I greatly appreciate all the call-outs for similarities to natural languages, and I wanna shout-out the use of a positive tag question instead of negative. The numbers have this funky sexagesimal base with an octal sub-base and remnants of an old decimal sub-base, which recalls some of the duodecimal remnants in the otherwise decimal system of many European languages.
Taqồpaq's Gallus-inspired phonology includes the tonal system being described as recalling a rooster's crow. The lexicon includes roots for all things chicken, including using the word for 'wattle' as a classifier for hanging things, which is so delightfully what I wanted out of this challenge. The more idiomatic language makes use of chicken behaviours as descriptors: dust baths are metaphors for something useful but not everyone's cup of tea, and continuing to brood after the chicks have hatched is a metaphor for doing a good thing so long it has negative consequences.
Extra brownie points for exalting queen TrÆ°ng, first queen of Vietnam, and a nationalist hero who fought against Chinese imperialism. Double whammy right there!

Ngālin by u/borago_officinalis

Aptenodytes forsteri (emperor penguins); Awabakal, Māori, Norwegian
We already had a penguin splang but this one's a nice twist by focusing on the territorial claims of Antarctica rather than the ranges of more temperate inclined penguins where there are actually native languages. This does a great job of shirking the indigenous implication in the language selection step of the challenge (although I'm very glad to see no English or Spanish), so there's a really neat mix of isolating Māori particles with a fusional Germanic verbal system, and I was able to easily pick up on both reading through the doc. The verb system actually pleases me greatly with a strong/weak contrast and a V2 word order wherein the strong verbs mark tense through stem change and the weak verbs with a tense auxiliary, all whilst maintaining a very Polynesian aesthetic despite the very Germanic number of vowels. The Māori possessive system is also really fun, I think. I can't speak to the Awabakal influences, but I was able to pick up on the one, tiny Mapudungan influence of tone tag particles before it was even explicitly mentioned! Not sure where the negation system came from, but it implicates the weak verbs in a way I so adore. Really sweet, despite the fun grim facts about emperor penguin hatchlings, and I found this one just darling. The myth at the end about how penguins lost their ability to fly is also real treat and is a perfect fit for the project.
Ngālin doesn't have any A. forsteri-inspired phonology, but it makes up for it with the inspired lexicon and idiomatic language. The emperor penguin breeding cycle is detailed with translations for all the important terms along the way, including but not limited to the ritual of transferring egg from mother to father and "motherless" to refer to a newborn, whose mother hasn't yet returned from the sea. There's some great, everyday idioms elided down from full phrases for greeting and consoling another penguin being "which way?" and "next year", and conceptualising a long distance as specifically the distance from colony to see is a nice touch. I also appreciate how the relationship between creche-mates is more important than that between (half-)siblings.
I have to give queen exaltation brownie points purely for the one illustrative example of āmā o pipa "hatchling's mum" grammatically indicating the senior authority of an empress penguin.

Honourable Mention

I've been kept somewhat apprised of a Urile (North Pacific cormorants) splang by u/PastTheStarryVoids. It's still very much in the works, but it sounds funky with both some polysynthetic flavours, no doubt inspired by some PNW languages, I imagine, and some formorant (cormorant formant) analysis! Keep an eye out for it, I'm sure it'll grace the sub in due time!

And that's everything I've seen in the time I put together this showcase. I know there were a few among you all who felt inspired but couldn't put anything together during the course of this challenge. I remember mention of a banana and a tree kangaroo splang on the announcement post. If anyone ever uses the challenge to inspire a future project of theirs, please keep me apprised! I'd be interested in seeing them if for nothing else than to see some more projects outside of South Asian and Oceanian birds, as great as those birbs are. I can't believe I didn't see a single monotreme or non-ungulate eutherian, and that there weren't any non-avian reptiles or anything fully aquatic! And no fossil clades, too, for that matter! I'm positive there are the makings of some really funky splangs if the relevant modern continental and climactic boundaries didn't yet exist.
In any case, I hope all parties involved had a great deal of fun through the course of this challenge! I know I did! Until next marrow, bonelickers!

2024.06.09 17:41 Mobile_Ad578 Wedding drama

Long long story sorry. Rules set out by soon to be Husband 1, no church. OK no problem 2, no cake. OK far to expensive anyway 3, equal number of guests. Interesting as 4 including him in his family, 10 in mine, plus 10 mutual friends plus his work mates who had children/teenagers so allowed for plus ones for each teenager as I know the venue had arcade and at least they could enjoy it. 12 people total of 38 just incase. So I ordered Package deal of Christmas set meal of 12 starters, 12 Mains and 12 Deserts choice for each person which also included 50 tickets per person on the arcade game machines one of which was white water rapids I wanted to go on. 4, no wedding Dress. He believed that as we add been living together for 10 years there was no point in a wedding dress. Wrong ĂŹ would ware what I wanted to. 5, no flowers. He did not understand it was already decorated for Christmas as we were having registered wedding on 18th December. 6, an extra place was to be set for his deceased brother. I had never met his brother and as he was paying nothing towards the wedding there was no way I was having my family pay for a full meal for a ghost. 6, Who would be our witnesses. Agreed. 7,no top table (no idea how to explain that to parents) 8, no speeches (not his choice so tough)
Registrars rules 1 no alcohol in room ( room had a bar in it and had to be emptied before wedding which venue kindly did) 2 no religious themes in room (exception for Christmas Decorations as long as no crosses,) 3, no walking down an aisle (so Bridesmaids and farther of the bride cannot walk together STUPID RULE) my Dad did not get to walk any of his daughters down an aisle, I did offer to take him to Tescos so we could walk down an aisle which made him laugh and he was OK with that)
Bridesmaids, Sister and Niece told, venue was totally floor to ceiling red, as the room at Dave and Busters was set for Christmas. Dresses were paid for by my parents, in any choice of style, colour and length totally their choice. I ended up paying for Husband to be leather trousers and I had brought him a shirt which he did not want to ware and said he would buy his own. Not sure why I had to buy leather trousers. During fitting no available dresses in my size to try so dressmaker surprised me by getting my size 10 Sister to try the dress on. Mom was so happy as my sister didn't wear a wedding dress for her wedding. No way would I look anything like her as I was a 20 the dress had to be 2 sizes up from that due to fitting and Sister 5ft 0in I am 5ft 8in she is blond blue eyes I am mousey and Hazel eyes. I could not say a thing as parents were paying and mom was happy.
The wedding hell ( day)
Hairdresser took 4 hours for 2 do ups 1 wash and blow dry. I told him to do same as usual, which usually took 30 minutes however he decided to add a little body to my hair which I said OK, but he had spoken to my mother, they agreed ringlets would look great, I hate ringlets and curly hair. I felt awful as he put curlers in for body, sprayed it with stuff and left me for 3 hours whilst he did the others, promising me the spray would make it have a slight wave, like hell. Others looked great and no time to fix it, as had to get ready.
So Bridesmaids wore red satin A line dresses (yep you could not see them in a red room)Dad ordered cars, not 2 as we had agreed but 1 taxi for all of us. 2 Bridesmaids, Dad, Mom ME and driver packed in. We passed groom on way as he left a pub. He was late! Photos taken of me, angry bride getting out of packed car whilst snowing. 1 taken. Brother was photographer and realised not a happy bride. Photos of everyone else by Christmas Trees. My groom turned up slightly drunk and said the most amazing thing to me that I was surprised I married him but all I could think was how much everything had cost my parents.
We had to met with Registrars before wedding in a room and were asked about the order of service they provided we said short as we wanted to let guests enjoy the venue. We were asked if they could do a reading. Expecting they meant a religious one we said no thank you. Guess not turned up out of 35, 10 all his work mates 6 of which turned up at 8pm after a 2pm wedding. Expecting to be fed the wedding meal which was finished hours previously so they expected us to pay for an evening meal for them. Answered No chance. ÂŁ1,000 wasted on there food alone. Anyway the "service" consisted of us answering yes to our names whilst we were seated on a stage with only Registrars bride and groom. No one else allowed all others seated in no order and then the registrar stood up and said the bride and groom did not want a reading but they needed to complete the paperwork so here is a reading of a poem! Don't remember saying yes to that. That was it. We signed a book or 2 and it was over, no option to stop the wedding which I was going to do but to late. I had 2 dresses one a wedding dress and a change for the meal after the service, a black satin dress which was how I felt. I went to change. At which point one of the witnesses decided to do a toast to the bride and groom and I was not in the room, it took me 3 minutes to change dress and shoes. My Dad did not get a chance as the meal was ready. And I was back, The meal was buffet style with all 12 of each option per person it was huge. Everyone looked at me to be seated as there were 3 sets of tables. I said please sit where ever you like. I went to a table and sat down my husband sat next to me on my other side were 2 mutual friends his parents my parents and next to my husband was his mom's friend I had not met who had dementia and called my husband his deceased brothers name for the next hour. At the end of the meal I gave out the tickets for the arcade, having 500 tickets extra, strangely I was left with no tickets left to go on the ride but as it turned out i did not get the chance. Why well, Husband was so drunk, he started a fight with his Dad. It got so bad that I had people telling me to take him home. Angrily I arranged it having had a 2pm wedding which finished with a passed out Husband on the bed at home by 4.15pm 2 and a quarter hours wedding. He proceeded to wake and went to the upstairs toilet but managed to throw up on the carpet midway, yes I could have got it cleaned but why should I. So I cut a huge hole out wrapped it up and put it in the bin, blaming him for cutting the carpet up after puking. Which he believed for many years and still does. We got conned for 6 bottles of champagne instead of 5 which was for 25 adults because my sisters son had a glass and they had to open an extra bottle but he was under age and already told no alcohol. Then whilst opening our presents at home on my own while everyone else was at the wedding with evening entertainment and buffet I had a phone call for the remaining bill to be paid and I had to play chase ringing my Dad at a quiet time to go and pay the remaining balance as he was still there. So I spent the rest of the night on my own. Nice Ho almost forgot the special something my groom said to me as soon as he arrived seeing me dressed up "What the f**k do you look like?" Just as we were called into the registrar meeting.
For background were dated for 5 years lived together for 10 years were married for 19 years 359 days we divorced absolute 6 da6s before 20 years married. Now 5 years divorced so much better.

Learn words in sentences and phrases not individual. Watch TV shows and online streams.
Watch movies/series/YouTube channels in English, with English subtitles at first and then without

Reading and listening are important. Listen to English-speaking radio. You can get lots of them on the internet. Try different English-speaking countries. Watch TV shows if you can. Get them on YouTube or other similar sources. Look for programmes like news or documentaries. You have the pictures to help you understand. Language in them is more genuine than in a soap opera. Look for programmes or things to read that are of interest to you. So if you have a hobby or other interest, look for things in English that relate to them. You will learn English and maybe something about your interests.
Lately, I've just found out this site ( https://www.conversationexchange.com/ ) where you can chat/speak with native English speaker, it's really cool.
Always have a notebook with me to makes some notes or write down some new vocabulary or phrases.
And the most important thing
speaking practice. I can recommend you ,,speaky app.,, It’s really cool. Lot of weird people which do not distinguish this app from tinder there but I have found some decent people that I am able to speak a few times per week with. I can even say that after few months they even became my friends.
  • try to embed yourself in english
  • persistance and constistnecy, do it daily, event if it’s just one new word its always step forward,
  • find an english speaking friend and stay in touch with him frequently
  • exercise your speaking muscles everyday for 5 minutes
https://discord.com/invite/english in there you can find people to speak with anytime
I've learned English on my own through YouTube.
Step 1. Unsubscribe from all the channels in your native tongue.
Step 2. Subscribe to all English Learning Channels you can find.
Step 3. Watch Videos from the subscribed channels whenever you have occasion.
In 2-3 months you will understand most of the content.
If you're a complete beginner, read books meant for kids.
Honestly I'd suggest trying a couple of nature documentaries first. The speech will be very slow and give you lots of time to understand what you heard. If you're still struggling with that, then worry about kids shows.
I'd also suggest looking at podcasts for English beginners. They should deliberately speak slowly and not use complicated words
Some that come to mind easily are two tv shows called Sesame Street and Peppa Pig because of their simple language (aimed at native English kids learning English).
For listening practice you could try this free Whatsapp group with daily British English listening practice - https://chat.whatsapp.com/ELjBO3HwTMgK3xxqq3mq6d
Try Nonsense.com :) It is free and you get to watch movies.
This explanation is a little long so you can translate it to your native language by using www.Deepl.com
There are many ways you can learn English as a beginner. First, I think it's important to find out exactly what your level is. A great framework for understanding language level is called CEFR "The common European framework for Reference". There are many free tests online you can take to find out your level. I recommend the EFSET test. It's free and fast. Here is the link.https://www.efset.org
After you have found out what your level is, you need to learn the necessary content. You also need to manage your time expectations. Each level of the CEFR A1 A2 (beginner) B1 B2 (intermediate) C1 C2 (Advanced) takes a different amount of time. The A levels take about 100 hours each. The B levels take about 200 and the C levels take about 300 hours.
To complete a level you will need to improve 8 areas:
  1. vocabulary = Improve your vocabulary by buying an appropriate vocabulary book. Try to learn 20 new words each day. Download an SRS app (spaced repetition) to help you learn the vocabulary faster. e.g. Anki or Quizlet. Also, try to make or use mnemonics to remember what the words mean.
  2. grammar = Buy an appropriate grammar book (I recommend Grammar in Use by Murphy) Each CEFR level has about 200 grammar structures. First, study the structures and understand what they mean, then activate them and make sure you can use them all in conversation. To help with this, you can use my Youtube. I post grammar lessons every day (Yes, I know this is a shameless plug) https://www.youtube.com/learngrammarwithstuart
  3. conversation = Make sure to practice what you have learned by speaking to a native speaker. There are a lot of great apps like Italki and Cambly where you can practice this for a very low cost.
  4. pronunciation = Improve this by shadowing (listening and repeating what people say) e.g. the audio content from the reading textbook. You can also improve your pronunciation by watching Youtube pronunciation channels.
  5. conversation = Make sure to practice what you have learned by speaking to a native speaker. There are a lot of great apps like Italki and Cambly where you can practice this for a very low cost.)
  6. reading = Buy a graded reader and practice reading at your level. To see if the content is at your level, use the following rule. If you need to translate more than 10 words per page, the book you are reading is too hard.
  7. listening = Improve your listening by watching TV shows that use simple English. I recommend kids cartoons and sitcoms e.g. friends. There are also lots of great youtube channels that you can use.
  8. writing = Improve your writing by using an app like Hello Talk or a similar SNS. It allows you to easily practice writing and communicating with other English speakers and language learners.
I hope this helps and good luck with your studies.

Peterborough 4 Palestine
Information from organisers...
On June 23rd a large cross organisational event will be held in Peterborough to support the campaign asking the UK to stop arming Isreal, and to apply pressure on our leaders to insist upon an immediate ceasefire.
For the last 8 months a child has been slaughtered in Gaza on average every 10 minutes. Never in the history of our species have children been killed so relentlessly or consistently for such a period of time
Many of those murdered by Isreal met their end at the hands of British made military drone technology, technology developed and produced by Elbit systems uk who operate heavily in this region, having two sites operating within just 50 miles of us in Peterborough.
These drones where also responsible for the recent deaths of 3 British aid workers delivering food and medical assistance to thoe facing these mose inhumane of attacks.
On June 23rd we invite all peoples, one and all, to assemble on Lincoln Road/Rock Park (off occupation road, pe1 2pb) at 10:30, where we will leave to march along Lincoln Road and into the city centre. We will then congregate en mass in Cathedral square, where there will be speeches, poetry, face painting, kite making, food, stands with educational opportunities...and much much more.
Love and solidarity, we hope to see you there!

2024.06.09 14:33 LastWeekInCollapse Last Week in Collapse: June 2-8, 2024

The heat and the pressure are on—for our planet, and for one more World War.
Last Week in Collapse: June 2-8, 2024
This is Last Week in Collapse, a weekly newsletter compiling some of the most important, timely, useful, soul-crushing, ironic, stunning, exhausting, or otherwise must-see/can’t-look-away moments in Collapse.
This is the 128th newsletter. You can find the May 26-June edition here if you missed it last week. You can also receive these posts (with images) every Sunday in your email inbox with Substack.
——————————
Bengaluru broke a 133-year rain record by almost 10mm last Sunday, with 111mm (4.37 inches) of rain falling in a single day. In Sri Lanka, some 24,000 people were displaced by recent flooding. A heat wave swept through the southwest United States and northern Mexico. Part of Niger already broke its June temperature record. Parts of New South Wales, Australia broke nighttime temperatures as well; so did the Philippines, and Vietnam. And a heat wave in Greece.
“Atmospheric blocking” happens when regions of the atmosphere remain stationary for days or weeks, imposing similar weather on a region for a while. A study released in Nature Communications looked at Svalbard, which is warming faster than the Arctic, which is itself warming faster than most of the rest of the planet. The researchers claim that atmospheric blocking has resulted in warmer & wetter conditions in Svalbard, which is driving its ice loss. “The augmented blocking in the Ural and Scandinavian regions in the future combined with the projected declines in sea ice, and increases in sea surface temperatures and moisture availability, will likely increase the magnitude and frequency of exceptional rainfall incidents similar to the 2016 occurrence, posing further hazards to the population and ecosystems in Svalbard.”
A paywalled study in Nature Climate Change emphasizes “in the absence of a global tipping point there is no safety margin within which permafrost loss would be acceptable.” The summary states that permafrost melt does not have a worldwide tipping point, but rather several local temperature thresholds. Permafrost worldwide is expected to be all melted once global temperature gains hit 5 or 6 °C.
We are currently in the brief neutral period between El Niño and La Niña, expected to begin around August. Meteorologists expect temperatures in the eastern Pacific to decline for between 1 and 3 years—and for stronger Atlantic hurricanes. A 14-page report from the WMO forecasts a particularly wet summer for Central America.
Monsoon storms in Sri Lanka killed 14, mostly by falling trees, though others drowned or were covered by landslides. Texas saw “canteloupe-size hail” fall during a freak tornado; some think it is a record size for the region. Experts say some 23% of Africa’s land has been degraded, by five major factors: 1) invasive species, 2) climate change, including Drought and flooding, 3) resource extraction, 4) deforestation, and 5) pollution, including algal blooms. Poverty, population growth, and resource dependencies have aggravated the problem, says the article.
In Kashmir, a glacier Collapsed, sending three plunging into the ice, one of whom has still not been found. In the Philippines, a volcanic mud landslide swept into a village; volcano alerts were raised to 2 (on a 0-5 scale). Rising sea levels are displacing residents of one of Panama’s islands (pop: ~1,200); others will follow. Greece is gearing up for a fierce wildfire season ahead. And, in a moment of hopeful news, Sweden is banning bottom trawling in its “marine protected areas.”
In the EU, early polling appears to show a “greenlash,”, a backlash to the Green Alliance—and perhaps a loss of some 30% of their 72 current seats in the EU Parliament (705 total). Some blame the “moral superiority complex” of Greens, while others believe it is their lack of compromise on important issues. Farmer protests also damaged Green sentiment; now future sweeping climate reforms will probably have to wait years to get passed, since conservatives are expected to make gains. Most results will emerge within 24 hours of this post.
Worldwide, 39% of environmental journalists have faced threats due to their reporting—according to a 112-page report by the Earth Journalism Network. Most of the threats came to reporters writing about illegal extraction operations.
Roughly 20% of sealife near the surface is expected to face a “triple threat” of climate hazards: extreme heat, oxygen loss and acidification. Some of these species will die in place; others will be forced into progressively smaller living spaces. Most of the danger lies in the northern Pacific. The full study in AGU Advances has more.
The UN Secretary-General announced that we are on the “highway to climate hell.” And we aren’t wearing any seatbelts. The EU Copernicus Programme says last May was the hottest on record. This means the last 12 months were the hottest on record, with each consecutive month setting a new monthly record. Our planet is supposedly on the edge of 1.5 °C temperature increase, but some think we’ve already surpassed it.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released a 27-page report, “Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update 2024-2028,” predicting short-term temperatures exceeding the 1.5 °C mark.
“The global mean near-surface temperature for each year between 2024 and 2028 is predicted to be between 1.1°C and 1.9°C higher than the average over the years 1850-1900. It is likely (80% chance) that global mean near-surface temperature will exceed 1.5°C above the 1850-1900 average levels for at least one year between 2024 and 2028. It is about as likely as not (47%) that the five-year mean will exceed this threshold
.Arctic warming over the next five extended winters (November to March), relative to the average of the 1991-2020 period, is predicted to be more than three times as large as the warming in global mean temperature. Predicted precipitation patterns for 2024, relative to the 1991-2020 average, suggest an increased chance of low rainfall over North-East Brazil and an increased chance of wet conditions in the African Sahel, consistent with the warmer-than-usual temperatures in the North Atlantic
.
The Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy released its 2024 Environmental Policy Index, and the 204 pages illustrate the state of sustainability in 180 countries, according to 58 indicators. The document, full of useful graphics and accessible summaries, presents a world in escalating danger of global heating, pollution, and biodiversity loss. It is well worth skimming. These kinds of climate reports usually seem to me like, overall, much more time was spent making them than people spend reading them

“Only five countries — Estonia, Finland, Greece, Timor-Leste, and the United Kingdom — cut their GHG emissions at the rate needed to reach zero by 2050
.After climate change, biodiversity loss has emerged as the most serious and irreversible environmental crisis
.As of 2022, aggregated GHG emissions were falling in 60 countries but still rising in 128
. Human activities, namely the combustion of fossil fuels, of which CO2 is an inevitable byproduct, have caused a nearly 50 percent of the increase in CO2 levels in the atmosphere since the industrial revolution, with atmospheric concentration surpassing 426 parts per million in April 2024 — a level higher than at any point in human history
.China, the United States, and India are pivotal, accounting for over half of global GHG emissions
China used more cement in two years (2020 and 2021) than the United States did in the entire twentieth century
.Air pollution remains the most serious environmental threat to public health. Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter less than 2.5 ”m in diameter (PM2.5) caused 7.8 million premature deaths in 2021, close to 12 percent of global deaths

Mexico saw its first human case of a bird flu strain, H5N2, in a dead man supposedly with no known previous exposure to animals. Two turkey farms got outbreaks in Minnesota, and Iowa’s first dairy farm reported bird flu as well. American health authorities expect H5N1 human cases to rise in the coming weeks. Bird flu was also found in San Francisco last week. Millions of human vaccine doses for bird flu are being prepared for the United States this summer.
Citigroup says the United States is already in a recession, though other institutions disagree. Nevertheless, junk bonds are becoming even more junky, and economists agree that the economy is at least slowing down. Credit card debt is reportedly rising, and the “personal savings rate” has dropped to pre-COVID levels. “America’s debt accumulation over the last seven years is akin to the costs of a world war,” says the article. Cuts to the Federal Reserve interest rate are coming, and the rise of tariffs is unlikely to stop soon. And Europe’s strongest economy, Germany, is not seeing a strong recovery from last year’s recession.
Thousands are starving in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, where Drought and school dropouts have also worsened. Investigators claim in a new report that both sides in the Tigray War committed grave war crimes and “acts of genocide” in the conflict, which ended (on paper, anyway) in November 2022; intercommunal violence continues at a lower intensity.
The American Heart Association released a report projecting the rates of heart illnesses by 2050, and they believe the rate of hypertension among adults will rise from about 51% in 2020 to 61% in 2060. Diabetes rates are expected to jump from about 16% in 2020 to almost 27% in 2050; and obesity rates will expand 17% to over 60%... A number of other heart conditions are expected to worsen as well, though at least high cholesterol rates are expected to decrease.
A 12-page report by Oil Change International says what we all know: most nations are failing to meet climate targets. “Some G7 countries are massively expanding fossil fuel production at home, while others are investing in more fossil fuel infrastructure abroad.” China is, far and away, adding more renewable energy capacity than any other nations on earth, supposedly adding “over 90% of all renewable capacity mentioned in NDCs {nationally determined contributions}” in the 2020s so far.
The U.S. FDA has unanimously recommended a new vaccine be developed to address the JN.1 COVID variant. Vaccine-manufacturers say that a new vaccine could arrive as early as mid-August. A 242-page prepublication report on the long-term dangers of Long COVID, with a view to planning future impacts on Social Security.
“Even individuals with a mild initial course of illness can develop Long COVID with severe health effects
.Women are twice as likely as men to experience Long COVID
.Long COVID can cause more than 200 symptoms and affects each person differently
.There currently is no curative treatment for Long COVID itself. Management of the condition is based on current knowledge about treating the associated health effects and other sequelae
.Long COVID symptoms generally improve over time, although preliminary studies suggest that recover can plateau 6-12 months after acute infection. Studies have shown that only 18-22 percent of those who have persistent symptoms at 5-6 months following infection have fully recovered by 1 year. Among those who do not improve, most remain stable, but some worsen.” -selections from the study summary
Germany reported African swine flu in some pigs in the northeast. Monkeypox cases remain in the United States, and at higher rates than last year, despite waning media coverage. And four strains of dengue fever, yes four, are still sweeping through Brazil with no end in sight.
A number of current & former employees at OpenAI are warning of the careless pursuit of dominance of the artificial intelligence arena—and the supposed 70% chance that AI could bring about “doom” for humanity. Some of the computer scientists believe that a general intelligence (AGI) could arrive as soon as 2027—a generation earlier than previous estimates of roughly 2050. "The world isn’t ready, and we aren’t ready," said one dissenting researcher.

The intervention into Haiti is almost ready to go, but gangsters in Haiti have escalated attacks against police in advance of the Kenya-led operation, set to begin in a week or two. “The gangs are just waiting for the Kenyans, they’re just cracking their knuckles and stretching out.
It’s going to be a battle if not a bloodbath of a war, because the gangs are ready,” said one ex-diplomat. A new PM has been installed, Garry Conille, a guy who previously served as PM for 4 about months in 2011-2012. Gangs vying for power control roughly 80% of Port-Au-Prince; will they remain fragmented upon the arrival of an outside coalition, or make an alliance of convenience to oppose police intervention?
Although New Caledonia’s state of emergency has ended, over $1B of damage has been wrought by rioters opposing an expansion of voting rights. Analysts say that the Pacific island’s abundant nickel reserves—essential for France’s renewable energy push—have seen their extraction obstructed by recent events. A curfew remains in place, and social cohesion has been seriously damaged by the protests and the central government’s reactions.
President Biden issued new orders restricting the flow of migrants and asylum-seekers at the Mexico border. At the U.S./Canada border, migrant arrivals have spiked 1000%+ in the last 3 years. Days before the EU election, Portugal instituted stronger controls over immigration. On the Poland/Belarus border, a Polish soldier died, after being stabbed by a migrant from Belarus.
Georgia’s controversial foreign agents bill has been signed into law despite strong protests from the masses. Some call the law a form of Russian hybrid warfare, though Russia contends that allowing foreign media funding functions as a kind of anti-Russian hybrid warfare on its own.
South Korea suspended a military agreement with North Korea over their waste balloons sent into the South. This will result in a more militarized border, outside the DMZ, in the coming months. President Putin is also planning a visit to Pyongyang, which has been long-supplying materiel to Russia for use in Ukraine. A border clash between Chinese and Indian forces took place in their contested mountains—using only sticks and stones.
Conditions in Gaza are said to be “beyond crisis levels” for the 1M+ people who have been displaced from Rafah, as the Israeli advance continues—despite calls from the ICJ to halt the operation. “The sounds, the smells, the everyday life, are horrific and apocalyptic,” said one observer. Killings in the West Bank have now exceeded 500 since October 7, and aid deliveries have sunk 65%+ since the Rafah offensive began. A strike on a school killed 45 people sheltering there, according to Gaza officials. In the coastal settlement of al-Mawasi, where many IDPs moved after the Rafah invasion began, toilets are so scarce that over 4,000 people share a single latrine.
The battlefield is expanding; in some ways, it has always been all-encompassing, and it’s only now that the world is re-learning it. Ukraine has sent soldiers to Syria to fight Wagner Group mercenaries operating in the failed state. Ukraine had earlier intervened in Sudan to combat Russian forces operating in the country. Ukraine also struck an air defense unit inside Russia for the first time, marking another escalation in the War. Russia struck Ukraine’s largest hydroelectric power plant in Dnipro, which is now in “critical condition.” Russia reportedly intends to restart the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant at some point, though international regulators argue that it would be unsafe to turn Europe’s largest nuclear facility online while War still rages around it. Half of Ukraine’s electrical generation has been taken offline. Although weapons are reaching Ukraine’s frontlines, they are not enough to change the tide of the War—and are still outnumbered by Russian soldiers & munitions. Ukraine is also crowd-sourcing 3D-printing drone parts to support their drone fleets—a key part of future modern warfare.
Russia also claims that French military instructors within Ukraine present a lawful military target for Russian forces—and an opportunity to start WWIII. But others believe the flashpoint may come from elsewhere—Taiwan, or the unfolding Israel/Hamas/Hezbollah/Iran conflict, which are intensifying on the Lebanon/Israel border. Russia is also taking over Niger’s uranium reserves, once held by a French corporation. And four Russian sea vessels will be visiting Cuba—but not carrying nuclear weapons.
Around Sudan’s capital, looters, checkpoints, and violence have been established. Several torture chambers have been discovered, and the smell of death hangs in the air of a few neighborhoods, contested by both sides. The number of displaced people is approaching 10M. Russia is supposedly playing both sides to its advantage. “All over Sudan, people are going hungry because they have lost everything, the economy has collapsed, and armed men frequently steal what little aid is available,” said one reporter. The insurgent RSF forces are said to not only be fighting for the future, but fighting over history as well. The National Museum has become a cemetery for RSF fighters. University archives have been burned. And ancient artifacts have been cleared out, sold to mysterious buyers, stashed away in unknown places, or simply destroyed
Other horror stories are still emerging; this article details some of the worst recent tales in the War.
One major NATO supplies provider claims that a decade of arms accumulation is coming, to replenish stockpiles given to Ukraine and in advance of a potential open War between China and whatever western nations decide to participate. China announced its intention to detain vessels moving into its alleged national waters near the Philippines—and presumably to sink those which resist. Ukraine used up six years’ worth of shoulder-fired missiles, like javelins, in just one year. The development of the F-35 will exceed $2T, although the U.S. military is planning on using it less than previously expected. NATO is also planning its rapid-transit troop corridors through Europe to the expected frontlines of a potential open War against Russia.

2024.06.09 14:28 AbuW467 Say “Bismillah wa Allahu Akbar” when doing Eid Sacrifice

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
đŸ“© Question:
Is the addition of the Takbeer after mentioning Allah's name (Bismillah) whilst slaughtering specific for the ‘Eid sacrifice or for any sacrifice?
📝 The answer:
The Takbeer has been mentioned for the ‘Eid sacrifice. As for other than the ‘Eid sacrifice, then only mentioning Allah's name (Bismillah) is sufficient. This is due to the Speech of Allah (ŰȘŰčŰ§Ù„Ù‰): {ÙˆÙŽÙ„ÙŽŰ§ ŰȘÙŽŰŁÙ’ÙƒÙÙ„ÙÙˆŰ§ÛŸ Ù…ÙÙ…Ù‘ÙŽŰ§ لَمْ ÙŠÙŰ°Ù’ÙƒÙŽŰ±Ù Ù±ŰłÙ’Ù…Ù ٱللَّهِ Űčَلَيْهِ} “And do not eat of that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned”.
As for saying 'Bismillah Allahu Akbar', then this was mentioned by the Prophet (ï·ș) when he sacrificed on the day of ‘Eid as has been reported by Bukhari and Muslim on the authority of Anas, and reported in Sahih Muslim on the authority of ‘Aishah (Ű±Ű¶ÙŠ Ű§Ù„Ù„Ù‡ ŰčÙ†Ù‡Ű§).
So for other than the ‘Eid sacrifice, it is incumbent to suffice with only mentioning Allah's name (Bismillah), and as for the one who adds ‘Allahu Akbar', then we cannot rule him to be commiting a Bid’ah (heresy), however that which is incumbent is to leave it off, and Allah knows best.

2024.06.09 14:06 Competitive_Crow_334 Chapter 1: Creation and the Garden of Eden

Question 1: Creation
Then God saw everything he had made and indeed it was very good. So evening and morning were the 6th day. Thus heaven and earth and all their adornment were finished and on the seventh day God finished the works he made. Then God blessed the 7th day and sanctified it because in it He rested from all his works God began to make.
This story doesn’t add up where God come from and why then? Even as someone who believes there is a creator I don’t understand how it’s him and if he is as powerful as he is why did it take him 7 days to make the earth and then need rest? Shouldn’t someone so powerful think of it in an instant? Also how is time told he doesn’t make the sun and moon until the 4th day so how were evening and morning created in the start? If he created the universe and every animal why didn’t he mention dinosaurs or the ice age or even give a significant hint of one instead of being vague with the creeping things and the wild animals of earth if he knew about those ahead of time wouldn’t mentioning it help prove that he is an almighty being who can see into the future? Yes you could argue that maybe it’s not important but remember if Adam and Eve came to earth later how come it doesn’t add up to what we know about the dinosaurs and the ice age? How come God didn’t mention removing them for the safety of Adam and Eve?
Also about firmament which I found out is separating heaven from earth and that there is a waterfall separating heaven and earth? What about space and the other planets God doesn’t even mention those in a vague way? God formed man out of dust from the ground and breathed in his face the breath of life and man became a living soul.
You know at least Allah says we were made from water which is more accurate than this? Science has proven that we are made up of 6 elements Oxygen Carbon Nitrogen Calcium and Phorsopus. Only about 0.85% is composed of another five elements: potassium, sulfur, sodium, chlorine, and magnesium. All 11 are necessary for life. The remaining elements are trace elements, of which more than a dozen are thought on the basis of good evidence to be necessary for life.[1] All of the mass of the trace elements put together (less than 10 grams for a human body) do not add up to the body mass of magnesium, the least common of the 11 non-trace elements.
Yes you could argue that you could mix logic and spirituality but you can say that about any religion as well In the Quran it says seemen begins from the backbone and goes down to the ribs that’s clearly illogical but do I defend it saying I can’t mix logic and spirituality? What about Greek Mythology they had Zeus give birth to a full grown warrior woman by eating her mother when they were shapeshifting and trapping the mother who later gave birth to her in his head? I can’t say that logically either.
The Garden of Eden
Also in the middle of the Garden were the tree of life and learning the knowledge of good and evil. Then how were Adam and Eve supposed to know what they were doing is wrong?
You may eat food from every tree in the garden: but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you may not eat: for in whatever day you eat from it you shall die by death.”
Once again how is Adam supposed to know what’s good and evil? Not only is he in ‘’perfect paradise’’ that shelters him, he doesn't even possess the basic knowledge of a child of right and wrong most kids usually do? How does Adam know what death is?
Numbers 23:19 — English Standard Version (ESV) 19 God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
Titus 1:2 New International Version 2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time,
2 Timothy 2:13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself.
These are one of the few verses saying God doesn’t lie yet he tells Adam he will die from death(God of the Bible lacks basic grammar skills) that itself is a lie since we know what happens later. In his 10 commandments for kids to adults he says lying is a sin he also repeatedly mentions hypocrisy as a sin yet he himself not even 5 minutes into the Bible has proved guilty of this. So how do I trust anything that comes out of his mouth and that’s even if I do believe he is not a deity?
Now the serpent was more cunning than all the wild animals the lord God made on earth.
Isn’t the serpent Satan supposed to be an angel? It even said he was cast out of heaven because he tried to overthrow God by sitting in his throne while God the omnipresent(can do anything including seeing into the future and being everywhere) went away to do something. Anyway, how is Satan supposed to be smarter than the other animals? Also it’s been awhile since I studied animals as a hobby but snakes aren’t that smart on the side of animals pigs and elephants and many others are smarter. Where did Satan even learn human speech?
Then they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the Garden that afternoon and Adam and his wife hid themselves within the tree in the middle of the garden from the presence of the Lord God. So the lord God called Adam and said to him. ‘’Adam, where are you”. He replied, I heard your voice as you were walking in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.’’ Thus he said, ‘’Who said you were naked? Have you eaten from the one tree which I commanded you not eat? Then Adam said. The woman you gave me, gave me of the tree, and I ate.’ Then God punished them for eating the apple Eve with childbirth and Adam with having to get a job.
Like I said a few times, how is Adam/Eve supposed to know right from wrong if they hadn’t eaten the fruit of knowledge and he left a manipulative monster or angel who tried to recently overthrow him? How is that grounds for punishing everyone else based on something someone else did? It just seems like a cheap way for the Christian God to demonize gaining knowledge or morals outside of him without an actual argument for why? The fact he does this in the first official story is a red flag on its own. Also how is God surprised he knows their entire story before they were even made? How is he confused about what Satan would do? Also this is also another lie and contradiction he told Adam he would die from death and I assume Adam passed that onto Eve and he let Satan off with little to nothing because from the few we see of him he could go anywhere he pleases while Adam and Eve carter to him for the rest of their lives in hopes that he doesn’t punish them even worse. How is he forgiving but at the same time he punishes Adam and Eve immediately for a decision they couldn’t make on their own instead of explaining how it’s wrong and still giving them another chance?

2024.06.09 13:45 minikelzke My father had a stroke, what happened? And what sort of recovery is to be expected?

On Friday morning, my father had a stroke. No one was with him at the time and I'm not sure if my dad realised what had happened. He spoke with a friend online and she noticed that he sounded different. She called him again the next day and he sounded worse. She eventually contacted me and I called for an ambulance. By this time, he was already experiencing weakness and disorientation, as well as trouble speaking.
I spoke with him over the phone and could barely understand a word. After a while, he was moved to a major hospital for a clot retrieval surgery. Hours later, I received an update that the surgery was over. The doctor told me that my father had had a stroke, caused by a clot in his brain and that due to the complex location of the clot that they hadn't been able to fully retrieve it, but had retrieved some. They told me that he was considered stable.
During my visit the next day, they told me that they had concerns about dysphasia and that my father has 'right-side neglect'. When I spoke with him, his left leg and arm seemed to experience spasms, his left leg kicking up at random and his left hand reaching around almost blindly. He was unable to look me in the eye, and kept coughing, straining and choking, attempting to bring up something in his chest. Before this, my father was frail but determined. The biggest chatterbox. The person I spoke to for hours on the phone. During my visit, he mumbles and tried to speak with me, but I couldn't understand. He seemed to hear me, and when I spoke with him, would become quiet so he could listen, but struggled to articulate his words. He seemed to be repeating things and his face is now asymmetrical, with one side drooping. His machine kept going crazy, beeping and flashing red whenever he tried to speak. He has high blood pressure, from what I could see from the machine.
The doctors talked like he wasn't even there, but I know he is. He still listens and talks. Tries his best to get the words out and tell me that he loves me and that he will see me soon.
I guess that I'm posting because I want to prepare myself. I'm being bombarded with so many different opinions from family members and as the person that may need to step up to carry on his future medical responsibilities, I'm struggling to keep myself together. I want to be practical, and understand to the fullest extent, how I can best help my father and what to expect in the coming months.
My dad has had previous health problems. In 2018, he was diagnosed with vegetation on the heart and needed surgery. He was fitted with a new synthetic heart valve and a pace maker.
He has a hernia from the surgery. The doctors told me today that due to this surgery, he should have been on blood thinners but I am not certain of if he has been taking them and wasn't even aware of the prescription (my dad doesn't like to worry people).
Last year, my dad experienced two seizures, in which the doctors were unable to diagnose. Since then, he has been weak and experiencing issues with his balance. He has told me of a few times where he has stumbled forward and been unable to keep himself from falling.
My dad has also been following a diet called the 'carnivore diet' to the extreme. In the last 12-6 months, he has been neglecting fruits and vegetables entirely and eating wholly meat, eggs and dairy, cooking his foods in animal fat and butter. The last time that we had a conversation over the phone we got into an argument about it. I wanted him to get a blood test, but he refused. He didn't want to be told that his cholesterol might be high.
The last time that I saw him was a few weeks ago. He looked small and frail and seemed forgetful. He forgot my name (but he sometimes does this, getting confused with me and my distant sister) but also seemed to have trouble remembering key events. He had expressed to me previously that he was having trouble remembering things (more-so-than-usual) but it seemed particularly bad this day. I didn't speak to him (asides from over text) until the night of the incident. That night, he told me that he was having trouble texting, which I can attest to as he sent me an emoji and the word 'IN' randomly over text.
I am currently waiting for a call from the social worker and speech pathologist in the hospital but I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I'm going crazy.
My dad is a proud man. A German immigrant that moved to Australia due to the violence over the Berlin Wall. He is a man that has sacrificed EVERYTHING for his family. Humble as he uses his bones to build a staircase to heaven for his loved ones. He is unique and stubborn, and strong. Stronger than anyone. The nurses at the ward told me that they can hear him straining and groaning as he tries to will his right arm into moving. He's an amazing person. Imperfect but admirable. At least to me.
I'm getting so much information tossed at me. Opinions of what to do. Anger of what happened. Questions that I can't answer. I want to prepare myself. I need to. Dad is going to try his hardest and so am I.
If anyone can try to use this information to help me, I will be eternally grateful. What can I expect? What is the likelihood of recovery? What do I need to organise? Who should I be speaking to? How can I ensure my dad gets the best care possible? If anyone could please shed a light on some of these questions, I think that I could sleep a little easier.
Thank you

2024.06.09 12:57 SansaDeservedBetter Do you think Mariah dislikes Celine Dion because of ‘My Heart Will Go On”?

I remember reading Tommy Mottola’s book because I wanted to hear what he had to say about Mariah even though I know he would try to spin their story because I’m nosy af and I want all the details.
In the book, he talks about his history in the music business and his interactions with several musicians. In early 1997, he had to really convince Celine and her manager husband to sing My Heart Will Go On for the movie Titanic. Celine didn’t really like the song and she sang it once for a demo just because Tommy insisted.
By this time, Mariah had moved out and was in the process of divorcing Tommy. Mariah and Celine were both Sony artists and Tommy said that Celine was the first and only singer that he offered the song to. He knew the song and movie would be a hit. The backstory is also very similar to how ‘Hero’ was recorded. Tommy wanted a song for a movie and strong armed Mariah to make ‘Hero’ which she resented at first because it’s so schmatsy. We all know that Tommy stopped promoting Mariah and was actively blocking her singles and sabotaging her as punishment for leaving him and trying to leave Sony.
I have a conspiracy theory that if Mariah and Tommy were still trying to make the marriage work in 1997, that he would have pushed for Mariah to have ‘My Heart Will Go On’ because he knew it would be a smash and it was a guaranteed Academy Award and a Grammy Award. There’s an old interview from 1992 or 1993 where Mariah was annoyed at the success of Whitney’s ‘The Bodyguard’ and its soundtrack and had the interviewer stop talking about it. We all know she wanted to get into movies and Tommy wouldn’t let her.
So I think Mariah is pissed that she was Sony’s best selling artist and she wasn’t even offered MHWGO. Now her two biggest rivals both had two hit movie soundtracks and she had none. So she is holding a grudge against Celine. The fiasco at Diva’s Live a year later just added fuel to the fire.
I also think it’s why she did ‘When You Believe’ for the movie The Prince of Egypt’ in 1998. Mariah wanted that famous tearjerker movie song.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that Walter Afanasieff was a producer for ‘My Heart Will Go On’ and Mariah felt betrayed that he took Tommy’s side in the divorce. This is what Walter had to say.
“Singers like Mariah, Celine [Dion], Whitney [Houston], Barbra [Streisand], they’re all very insecure creatures,” he said, adding, “If you start working on a song with another singer, the jealousy comes out. They’re very, very jealous people. So, I was working to put food on my table. I can’t only work with Mariah, I have to work with other people, and I think that was a bit of a problem ’cause I was working, at that time, with Celine, and there was a girl named Lara Fabian, too. So, I don’t know, we just parted ways.”
“The reason we stopped working together was primarily because she and her husband, who was the chairman of Sony Music, got a divorce. And I was under an exclusive contract with him. So she left the building. She wasn't even on the label anymore, but I couldn't go and work with her because he wouldn't let me. So she found that to be a little bit of a slap in the face."
Found the smoking gun from Tommy’s book. Quote from record producer Michele Anthony:
“Selling tens of millions of Celine records was really important for Tommy, too, because it showed that here was another female vocalist whose career he helped develop and broke who was now outselling Mariah. To be able to replicate what he’d done with Mariah was really important to him.”

2024.06.09 12:33 New-Discipline1959 Wonders of magic 2

This is a re-imagining of a post I wrote a week or two ago.
The post itself: https://www.reddit.com/TheCitadel/comments/1d11rb1/wonders_of_magic/
So let's say that Robert's Rebellion never happened. Aerys died due to starvation because he considered almost all the food sent away or because he contracted an infection after receiving a scratch from the iron throne. Elia was able to give birth to three children for Rhaegar, but the third child was a boy and not a girl. Lyanna didn’t run away with Rhaegar, maybe she married Roberta or just ran away to Braavos, for example, it doesn’t matter. In short, everything is peaceful and the kingdom is prosperous, although intrigue and other crap have not gone away.
Daenerys grew up in a loving family on Dragonstone with Rhaella and Viserys (Rhaella hates the Red Keep and King's Landing because they bring back bad memories). Viserys has his quirks, but he is more like a young Aerys who dreams of everything.
Daenerys herself shows an interest in magic and mysticism. For example, she has the gift of foresight, has a weak gift of pyromancy (she can hear the whisper of fire that warns and gives advice), is interested in astronomy and much more.
At the same time, John Stark, who is the son of Ned and Ashara because Brandon did not die, also lives quite happily. His parents live in Starfall occasionally visiting their relatives in the North.
John is also interested in magic. He has a strong Warg gift, he studies the speech of the first people and their runes that have power, he also spends time with the greenblood children learning about their culture and customs.
The essence of the idea is that Jon and Daenerys will run away to Essos together in search of adventure and to better learn the secrets of magic and its capabilities. They don't have to be lovers; friendship will also work.

2024.06.09 12:12 GanjaWithGandalf [TOMT] Looking for a video, comedy sketch, where in all the men express their emotions/feelings by pressing a “speech-button”

I saw this video about a year ago. All the boys/men would use a speech button to express their emotions/feelings. These buttons they would use you would usually see in dog videos. In these dog videos, the dog would press a button, and it would say something like “food” or ”go for a walk”.
Also, and I don’t know if I remember this correctly, all the actors in the sketch had an Australian or New Zealand accent.

I do have a few criticisms of the con but because it's the first one for Psych, i do feel they're fixable. But im just gonna share the love for fellow psychos who missed out! P.S. there was a sign that said audio and video isn't allowed to be recorded so im not going to post anything like that!
I wasn't there yesterday btw.
Timothy and Corbin were a fun pair for the first panel! and shoutout to all the psych-os who asked questions because some of them were SUCH good questions! and then the few sillier ones made it light hearted and sweet again. One question that i thought was beautiful was what their respective characters learned from the other. Tim said Lassie learned from Henry a lot of things, and Corbin said Henry learned from Lassie to love people and allow them in and that Henry's not a bad person from Lassie's stroke which of course reflects Tim's real life.
Psych-os trivia was meh and also the questions were genuinely so difficult LOL. i attached a pic that was from the very back but a lot seats are empty— that's because it was during psych trivia, lots of ppl left the seats to get food or merch. they mentioned it was about 2000 of us there!
Kirsten and Kurt were so funny. oh my god Kirsten is SO so beautiful in person! two very adorable children psychos asked them questions one after the other and it was so sweet! Kurt kept bringing up how Woody was interested in Chief Vick which was very funny.
The couple's panel aka James, Maggie, Jazmyn and Dulé was great! we all sang happy birthday to a fellow psycho (Matthew, i have an audio recording of that. if you want it, please dm me!) in response to favorite couple moments Maggie and James said ironically that they both pick the break up scene. James praised Maggie's acting a lot for that scene. Dulé mentioned his fave Shules moment was when they first meet at the diner. My question was if there was a scene not written for their character that they wish they could've done as an actor- maggie and jazmyn said allison cowley's speech at the end of psych movie 1. and maggie also said jazmyn's whole spiel in the morgue with the sandwich. Dulé said he'd wanna be zach levi with a bad British accent. James said Yang in the car scene where she holds the detonator at the end of an Evening with Mr. Yang and mentioned how ally sheedy killed it.
auction was wild. someone bought a banner that had every cast member's autograph on it for just under $1300!
Psych Game Night - cast vs psychos was very fun! a bit disorganized and the psychos who were on stage against the cast did pretty well. first was a family feud style game and then finish the line. however audience psychos helped out and when they did, they got to go on stage and receive a tshirt or tote that all the cast members signed! super amazing for them!! but psychos on stage apparently got leftover merch and the cast members went backstage quickly at the end so not all psychos on stage got signed items apparently :( i think it was just hectic and not totally planned out. they did go easy on the psychos and gave us extra chances by answering questions etc. the cast acted out some iconic lines from the show for the "finish the line" game!
Those are some highlights/what i can remember and I'm adding some of the pics i took although they're not phenomenal quality lol. thanks for reading!
