2024.05.16 07:28 harriskeith29 Who is MOST likely & worthy to be Goku's successor? (and why I want it to be Pan)

TLDR- In terms of likelihood, my bet is personally a toss-up between Pan and Goku Junior. Gohan is wishful thinking in my opinion. If I had to choose a favorite, I'm currently in favor of Pan because, aside from having the latent potential, I consider her the most interesting and unique candidate.
Toriyama decided years ago that he wasn't the guy (no matter how many times he surpasses his father), and I gave up on Goten after the end of Dragonball Z. Aside from never caring for his character to begin with, I've seen no evidence that he will surpass or even aspire to reach the same levels as Goku or Gohan.
At this point, I simply write him off as "Goku's other kid" whose greatest accomplishments were: A) Unlocking Super Saiyan 1 off-panel (in the original manga) with virtually no struggle (Wow, how compelling; And no, I don't care about that creatively cheap 2nd generation hybrid or S-cells explanation). B) Being one half of an infrequently useful fusion. Goku Junior may very well have the potential, but I just have no attachment to him as a character because we didn't spend enough time with him for me to invest in his future.
He may have had a serviceable arc in the A Hero's Legacy film overcoming his fears & anxieties about fighting (basically a rehash of young, cowardly Gohan's development; Credit where it's due, he at least had to struggle a little more for SS 1 which we see play out onscreen). But GT's finale where he & Vegeta Jr. face off just didn't leave me with much of an impression of him. He doesn't come off unique in any way. In terms of which character has the latent potential and presents as an interesting character, the best candidate I see is Pan.
To that end, one thing I sincerely hope Super does for her character is making up for one of GT's biggest wasted opportunities: LET- PAN- GO- SS- ALREADY! I always found the fact that DB's first canonical female Super Saiyans were new characters from another universe ridiculous. There is ZERO justification that's going to satisfy the majority of fans' desire to see Gohan's daughteGoku's granddaughter achieve something she should've been allowed to long ago. Most DB lovers have never supported that "only one quarter Saiyan" crap.
In many fans' POV, the amount of Saiyan blood or cells shouldn't dictate a Saiyan's capabilities to begin with, at least not to such a restrictive degree that a quarter's worth isn't more than enough. Being of a different species entirely is a different situation. Even then, however, one of DB's most common criticisms over the decades was certain characters becoming irrelevant as the power creep grew until Saiyans, Namekians, and androids (among others like Frieza) were insurmountably stronger. Even in the Tournament of Power, it was painfully apparent which characters would probably make the most difference by the final battles.
This is one reason fans have suggested for years now that at least one of the human characters should be able to unlock Ultra Instinct or some other technique to let them compete more effectively again. But I digress. Obviously, everyone shouldn't be equal all the time. Specific characters outstripping others comes with the territory of Shonen. But it speaks volumes when Pan has become such a fan favorite since GT that her English voice actor Elise Baughman commented that she was similarly surprised the character never unlocked SS.
If you don't want that to become a common criticism of Saiyan characters, then don't make the same blunder with Super's Pan. It's an unnecessary limitation that would deprive the fandom of seeing one of the most important & beloved members in the Z Fighters' next generation sport that iconic golden haiaura + teal eyes. The "Toriyama couldn't figure out how to draw female Super Saiyans" excuse doesn't fly anymore either. Numerous talented artists created decades of fan art that could've been used for reference. Besides which, Toriyama wasn't the only artist in the history of the franchise to design characters.
DB Super, Heroes, and Xenoverse (among other projects) introduced female Super Saiyans that looked just like a lot of that fan art. It would take no effort to translate that look to the canonical version of Pan. At this point, Super Saiyan is more than a transformation, motif, or even an in-universe rite of passage for Saiyan warriors. It's an integral part of the series' image and appeal, a globally recognizable visual that is inseparable from Dragonball's pop cultural identity. Like it or not, however much more powerful characters become, there will ALWAYS be a demand for Super Saiyan to remain relevant to some extent. And it SHOULD be.
If Toyotaro and the IP owners are smart, they'll remember that. Whatever Toriyama's intentions or preferences were, to keep this form out of Pan's reach simply because Dragonball's creator (R.I.P.) never canonically gave it to her would be a mistake. Respecting his wishes is one thing, and his vision for the world should be respected as a guiding force in shaping DB's future. I would never advocate for his will to be disregarded altogether.
What his will should NOT do is shackle DB from new creative possibilities if/when (again) countless fans want a possibility to be explored and would reward you for it with their money. There's a balancing act between business & artistic integrity in every marketable story. But ultimately, I see no way in which letting this particular long coveted desire finally be canonized would do anything but BENEFIT Dragonball going forward.
Comment below, who is your pick to be Goku's successor and why? What would you want for them? Feedback is welcome, but please respect each other's differences of opinion & preference.

2024.05.15 17:52 McMaina Let Us Discuss the Match Up Review Grading Rubric

Note: All of the following criteria are looked at in a vacuum and isolated from other matchups.
Connections:
How similar are the characters, are the connections to said characters true, and are they unique to both characters?
Note: Quantity is taken into account, but quality and uniqueness are what’s primarily taken into account for ranking.
0 : They do not exist and / or are all factually incorrect.
0.5: There is at least one connection that is factually accurate, but it is generic and surface level.
1-3: There is at least one accurate connection, and this one connection is of good quality and is unique. Everything else is either very stretched, generic, and/or wrong.
4-6: More than one connections that are mostly accurate, and there are a few unique connections, and any others are primarily made up of generic connections. Not necessarily bad connections, just ones that are not unique. There may be a handful of stretches. The number of connections isn’t as important up until this point.
7-9: There are a decent amount of connections that are all accurate and strong aside from a few stretched and/or generic connections.
10: A bunch of strong, unique connections that are all factually accurate with very little to no stretches.
Examples of Good Connections: Isaac vs Omori, Harry Potter vs Percy Jackson
Examples of Bad Connections: Darth Vader vs Sephiroth, Buddha vs Gojo
Thematics:
How similar are the character’s personal stories? And if they’re not similar, what about the stories of franchises overall?
Note: Contrasts are counted (as parallels) for when ranking Thematics. Uniqueness and quality also apply to thematics.
0: Character’s Stories and/or Series do not align or parallel at all
1-3: Character’s Stories and/or Series are vaguely similar
4-6: Character’s Stories and/or Series are decently similar and/or parallel each other
7-9: Character’s Stories and/or Series are very similar and/or parallel each other
10: Character’s Stories and/or Series either align/contrast nearly perfectly
Examples of Good Thematics: Ori vs The Knight, Ghost Rider vs Spawn
Examples of Bad Thematics: Luffy vs Ryuko, Giratina vs Yukari
Example of Stronger Connections but Weaker Thematics: Goku vs Sonic, Agent Jones vs Rick Sanchez
Example of Weaker Connections but Stronger Thematics: Monokuma vs Koro-Sensei, Duke Nukem vs Serious Sam
Animation Potential:
How easy would it be to produce a good looking animation? (Available models and sprites, effort required to draw by hand, etc.)
Note: Live Action episodes are too few and far between in both official episodes and MUs that would actually benefit from it, so it will not be taken into account for most MUs.
0: Neither Characters have assets that can be used to make an animation. Assets are going to have to be made in full for the animation to work (I.E. Making 3d models / Sprite sheets from scratch). Almost entirely relies on being hand drawn.
1-3: Only one character has assets, with them being low quality at that. Heavily relies on being hand drawn or assets being created and/or edited.
4-6: At least one character has high quality assets in both sprites and 3D with the other having minimal resources OR both characters have very low quality assets. Would need to rely on hand drawn a bit, but depending on the MU it could be excusable.
7-9: Both have high quality assets in either sprites and/or 3D and/or are very hand drawn friendly. (HD friendly characters EX: The Knight (Hollow Knight), Scooby-Doo, Mickey Mouse, etc.)
10: Both have high quality assets in all styles and are very hand drawn friendly.
Examples of Good Animation Potential: Yuji VS Denji, Scorpion vs Kratos
Examples of Bad Animation Potential: Junko vs The Major, Percival Fredrickstein Von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III vs Guts
Fight Potential:
How do the characters' combat kits mesh well and/or bounce off of each other well? Do both characters have enough in their respective arsenals to make an interesting fight?
Note: This is based purely on the actual combat side of things, with more intelligence based MUs doing better in Story Potential.
0: Neither character has/can canonically fight
0.5: One character can fight, the other can not
1-3: Both characters are able to fight though very minimal means, usually just being just normal people throwing out basic attacks (punches, kicks, sword swipes, etc.).
4-6: Both have at least more than one ability that can bounce off / counter each other well somewhat dynamically
7-9: Both characters have abilities that bounce off of each other naturally, with both having a lot to pull from in their arsenals
10: Both poweskill sets bounce/match each other masterfully and has a very good and enticing dynamic
Examples of Good Fight Potential: Kaos vs Vortech, Skul vs The Knight
Examples of Bad Fight Potential: Shigaraki vs Mahito, Walter White vs Light Yagami
Interaction Potential:
How well do the characters' personalities, fighting styles, and environment mesh well with each other?
Note: Non verbal communication is taken into account, and non language based communication is also taken into account (roaring/screaming, body language, general expressions of emotion, etc.)
0: Both characters are mute and/or emotionless and cannot interact with one another.
1-3: Only one of the characters in the match up can speak/interact, whereas the other character is either unable or unwilling to interact with either character. The dynamic is one-sided
4-6: Both characters can interact with each other, and their personalities are able to bounce off each other at least on a surface level
7-9: Both characters can easily create unique dialog and banter that comes and flows very naturally.
10: Both characters involved have nearly the same personalities, or contrast each other in an extremely dynamic way that flows extremely naturally
Examples of Good Interaction Potential: Darth Vader vs Lich King, Blade Wolf vs Omega
Examples of Bad Interaction Potential: Giratina vs Wobblewok, Revan VS Dark Urge
Story Potential:
Do the characters involved have a good, in-character reason to want to fight one another? Is there potential for an interesting story to be told through the fight?
0: Neither have an in character reason to fight and have no interesting or dynamic potential for a story during the fight
1-3: At least one character has a reason to want to fight, albeit a reason that’s dubious. That, or the reason both characters want to fight fall into cliche storytelling tropes (for the fight to functionally work, you would need to force these characters into a situation that’s out of character for both)
4-6: Both have a good reason as to why they would want to fight each other, but it’s not unique to either character specifically
7-9: Both have a good in character reason to want to fight and have the potential for an interesting story to be told during the fight/grow some kind of relationship with each other
10: Both have a perfect reason to fight with a magnificent story being told during the fight that feels very official, aside from one having to die
Examples of Good Story Potential: Walter White vs Light Yagami, DIO vs Alucard
Examples of Bad Story Potential: Josuke vs Ichiban, Adam vs Asura
Music Potential:
Do the styles of the characters and/or series mesh well? How many types of genres can it be? Can it tell something of a story without vocals?
Note: We rarely if ever take commission tracks into account for this category, given it can either under utilize the source material or goes involves the commissioned to create an effectively original track
0: Neither have canonical music to work with
1-3: Both have music to work with but clash very hard in tone, instrument choice, genre, and composition/heavily rely on Brandon and Therewolf being Brandon and Therewolf
4-6: Both have music that can work together but would clash in tone, instrument choice, genre, or composition/rely on Brandon and Therewolf being Brandon and Therewolf
7-9: Both have music that can very clearly work well together and/or can work in multiple different genres
10: Matches up in tone, instrument choice, and composition, can reasonably work in multiple genres, can tell somewhat of a story, and can just fucking slap
Examples of Good Music Potential: Grimm vs Alastor, Teddy vs Faust
Examples of Bad Music Potential: Gojo vs Gyro, King Piccolo vs Sukuna
Debatability:
Can you reasonably make an argument for either character to win the fight?
0: Neither character has anything to work with in terms of debating. They have no feats, or scaling of any kind to work with
1-3: The winner of the match up is very clear cut. With the only notable discussion being how fast does the winner stomp the loser
4-6: Both have win cons, but it's still very cut and dry who wins. And/or the debate relies on what you buy for both
7-9: Very debatable with very reasonable arguments being able to be made for either character winning
10: It’s borderline, could go either way, and or is a tie
Examples of Good Debatability: Shang Tsung vs Raphael, Q84 vs Batter
Examples of Bad Debatability: Alastor vs Black Hat, Scout vs Rebbeca
Promotability:
How easy would it be to make promotional material for the matchup?
Note: Hand drawn fan art from artists both inside and outside the general Death Battle community are not taken into account when ranking Promotability.
0: Neither characters have official cannon designs to work with
1-3: Characters have at least one render for thumbnails, and minimal assets for track arts and next time trailers
4-6: Characters have a fair amount of content in decently high quality for thumbnails, trailers, etc.
7-9: Characters have a lot of good, high quality, and dynamic renders and footage to use. The matchup can be easily promoted and it be of good quality
10: Characters have an abundance of renders with dynamic posing and in great quality for thumbnails, next time trailers, etc.
Examples of Good Promotability: Springtrap vs Junko, Makima vs The Batter
Examples of Bad Promotability: Sans vs The Judge, Owlman vs Rick Prime
Recognizability:
Character recognition is how well known the characters / series are, how well documented the characters / series’ are, and how well established they are in and outside of Death Battle
Note: Character recognition is taken into account for both existing fans of Death Battle, and newcomers to the series. This does not account for popularity
0: The characters involved in the match up are either extremely obscure, to the point where only the match up creator knows who the characters are, or they do not exist
1-3: Characters/Series are at least semi known and have a decent following, but are still extremely obscure to the general public and to the DBM subreddit. At bare minimum the characters exist
4-6: Characters/Series are decently well known, and have a decently sized following. But are still not considered to be household names. More often than not brand names are carrying the recognizability more than the characters themselves
7-9: Both the characters and their respective series are massively well known and documented, both in and out of the DBM community
10: Household names that have reached across the globe. These characters are massively well known, with very few people, if anyone, not knowing who these characters are.
Examples of Good Recognizability: Homer vs Vader, Mickey vs Bugs
Examples of Bad Recognizability: Multiverse Monarch VS The Cockroach King, Uzi vs Izzy Fisher
Here is the outline for the overall finished grades. Mind you this is based on the Canadian grading system so anything below a 50 is considered to be a failing grade.
0-29: Any match up that gets a grade in this score really cannot functionally work as an episode of the show. Too much effort would be placed on the Death Battle team in order to make it happen.
30-49: Any match up that gets a final grade within this score could work as an episode, in theory. But in practice it would still prove too difficult for the Death Battle team to make a full episode on.
50-59: Any match up that gets a final grade within this score can functionally work as a full episode of the show. There is just enough for the Death Battle team to justify making a full episode on, but would still require significant effort to make the episode work.
60-69 (nice): Any match up that gets a final grade within this score can solidly work as a full episode with very few potential major issues. There may be a few that still permeate, but nothing that will bring the match up down overall in terms of making a full episode.
70-79: Any match up that gets a final grade within this score can definitively work as a full episode of the show. There is enough to make an episode work and then some, with only 1 or 2 potential major issues, but nothing too great that brings the overall quality down significantly
80-89: Any match up that gets a final grade within this score can work fantastically as a full episode. There would only be 1 potential major issue, but it would be minor in comparison to everything else the match up gets right.
90+: Why isn’t this an episode yet? This matchup is firing on all cylinders and has nearly every category going for it in its favor.
With all of this being said, does anyone have any further questions about the rubric? I would be happy to answer any and all questions.

VALIANT VIDEOS

Somehow, Halo: Custom Edition turned twenty years old earlier this month. Un-flipyappin-believable!
In many ways, Halo: Custom Edition was the foundation of Halo modding, opening up the beloved original game to an infinite horizon of possibilities. I still vividly remember watching ancient videos of driving Scarabs around, piloting the Prophets' gravity thrones, playing as different species...
In celebration of this milestone, The Vengeful 'Vadam has made a tribute video that beautifully conveys the vibe and energy of the mid-'00s Halo modding scene.
Speaking of the mid-'00s era of Halo, NotPipi has delivered a jaw-dropping fan animation titled "Battle for Mombasa," set during the events of Halo 2 when the Covenant invade Earth. Lend NotPipi just eight short minutes of your life and prepare to be amazed!
Red vs. Blue may have come to a final, poignant end, but the machinima spirit lives on in the hearts of the Halo community, using the medium to ask questions about ( checks notes ) why almost all alien species' biology conforms to inferior bipedal models.
It would appear that even the Unggoy have taken to celebrating a particular date in May...

2024.05.12 20:48 The-Australian- [Low Effort Sunday] Unpopular opinion, but I'm glad the Dragon Ball Super manga didn’t skip the super hero movie

If you had been a part of any Dragon Ball community for the last year or so, complaints about how the manga decided the super hero movie unlike Resurrection F or Broly were endless, calling it a waste of time or filler. Me personally? I was glad it we being adapted.
As it is, the Dragon ball Super manga is an uncomplete product. You can read the entire original DB manga and you'll get the complete story, from kid Goku to the 28th world tournament. You can't say the same thing for Super.
To be able to see the full story of Super you not only would have to buy 21+ volumes of the manga, but the DVD/ Blu ray for Resurrection F and Super Broly, and you might as well throw in Battle of Gods too with how poor the adaptation was for that arc. If you just stook to reading the manga, all you'd get for those two very important arcs for the story of Super is only a couple of pages worth recaping them .
And I'm in the unpopular end of this, but I find this to be so fowl. A story should be able to stand in it's own medium, it can be complemented like Star Wars does most of the time, but if you have to essentially purchase DLCs to be able to enjoy the full story, you have both failed as a story and product.
Imagine you were readying Harry Potter. You read Filosopher, you read Chambers, and when you get to your third book, you don’t get Prisoner of Azkaban, but Goblet of Fire. What you get instead, is the poster of the Prisoner of Azkaban movie and a two page recap were they tell you that Harry has a godfather who had been framed, learned a new spell, time travell exists, Ron's rat was a dude secretly the entire time and so on. Then you repeat the same cycle for the next two books.
Would you like that? Because that’s the Dragon Ball Super manga in a nutshell.
It's even worse in the case of Resurrection F, because Toyotaro in fact did draw a manga adptation of the movie when it came out, it's incomplete though, goes all the way to point Golden Frieza is revealed. In any case, all they could have done was reprint those three chapters under the Super volume and add one or two more and you'd be done.
For all the faults the anime had, at least I can’t watch from episode 1 to 131 to see the full story.
And for that I'm actually okay they adapted the super hero arc to the manga and I hope one day they actually do proper adptations for Broly and Resurrection F.

2024.05.09 13:24 PyroFirefly What's your Tanabata prediction?

What's your Tanabata prediction?
I want to say this because I'm expecting them to appear in Dokkan:
https://preview.redd.it/l89iz7eewdzc1.jpg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c7165d3ef368e9c57083dc19e07752bddb43f05
However, at the same time, Planet Namek Saga and Bardock's movie stuff are from late 2021/2022, so they might hold them until New Year.
So, given how much EZAs are left from this saga, this could also be an option:
https://preview.redd.it/6uy9wchvwdzc1.jpg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6824f52d8caa916a5ff7f9e9166f26030c35c0df
What makes it tricky is how much units from late 2020 and early 2021 are wildcards (Angel Frieza, Turles, SS4 Gogeta, Bojack, Paikuhan and Janemba, Goten & Trunks, 8th Movie Broly, Videl, Tapion & Minotia, Kid Gohan/Goku & Piccolo from Garlic Jr. saga/movie, etc.). So, if they want to EZA some late 2021 units, this could work too (I've seen some Legends player bringing them as a potential unit for the 6th Anniversary):
It's Future Gohan from Dismal Future timeline & Future Trunks from the timeline where he saved the future.
GT has also plenty of stuff untapped from 2021 and even earlier. However, since it was Tanabata last year, they might move it for WWC or New Year.
So, what's your prediction?

2024.05.08 18:31 antiqueletterbox Full Power Battle wasn't that bad this time?

Did anyone else have a suprisingly easy time getting through this Full Power Battle, all the way through Scream?
Sorry if this isn't remotely worth talking about, I've only just been getting back into Legends so maybe this isn't anything noteworthy now, but from back when I played Scream was genuinely hellish without the most recent units. This time, though, I was able to beat it without Nappa/Vegeta or even Bulla, and relatively painlessly at that.
For reference, my team consisted of a Z1 Resurrection F Vegeta (13), Z6 SS3 Goku (10), Yajirobe (10), and Whis (12). Nothing noteworthy on my bench besides Zenkai Ginyu and Krillin for Yajirobe.
Here's a play-by-play of exactly how I got through it, for those who are curious or struggling to get through it themselves.
  1. Chose to play as Yajirobe for more control over when his heals proc, as well as his unique ability, which will be important later.
  2. Used both my blast and strike All-Out Rush cards before the first shield to chip some health off the boss.
  3. By the time he gets into his shield, you should've received another pair of All-Out Rushes. I used both, then Rising Rush. Activated Yajirobe's main for the sustained damage up on the boss.
  4. After that, I just used my All-Out Rushes as I drew them, unless the boss was in his shield. I didn't have my second Rising Rush ready, and didn't think I could've broken the shield with a party member down anyway (my Vegeta was dead by then) so no point wasting my big attacks on it
  5. Just tanked the second burst. After that, it was a matter of staying alive by vanishing (made sure not to waste Yajirobe's unique until now) till I got enough dragon balls to rush, which was enough to finish him.
And that was it. It only took two tries, when I figured I'd just give up around the third. There was a degree of luck with getting the dragon balls before I ran out of vanishes, but otherwise I found this method reliable enough to carry me through a second run, as well.
Couple general tips for optimal Yajirobe use
  1. Don't use your green cards unless all of your team is missing health (unless you need to use it for a dragon ball). I know "restore ally health by 10%" doesn't look like much, but it can make a difference in helping the AI survive the second "dodge forward/backwards" segment. Having them around to draw fire while you're scrambling for a second rising rush is a HUGE benefit ignore this xd Yajirobe's green cards apparently don't heal the other units idk what I was thinking. I would still say to hold off on using them until Yajirobe himself has taken some damage but not as important as I initially thought
  2. As I said earlier, don't vanish AT ALL until you absolutely need to (i.e. you will straightup die if you get hit one more time). You really want to preserve Yajirobe's three vanish restores for when everyone else is dead and the boss has no one to target but you.
But yeah, that's all. I just wanted to put this out to hopefully guide anyone struggling through the event, or to encourage anyone who didn't even bother due to how unwinnable FBP tends to be to give it a try. As long as you have Yajirobe, anyway.

2024.05.07 14:23 Able_Orange_841 Versatility of the Kamehameha

Can we all take a moment to appreciate how many variations of the Kamehameha Goku has used in his life?
  1. Your basic point and fire w/open cupped hands.
  2. Redirecting the beam if the target moves (vs Raditz).
  3. Using your feet to launch yourself to the sky (vs Piccolo).
  4. Focusing the accumulated energy into spheres to be used later (vs Freeza).
  5. Retaining a full charge to be used after using a different technique (Instant Transmission vs Cell).
  6. Using the fully charged energy to glide on top of another energy beam before firing it (vs Kefla).
  7. Change its color from blue to red (10x power) (as SS4 vs Baby Vegeta).
  8. One-handed like a badass. (Technically Gohan, but still...)
I think that's all of them.

2024.05.06 05:33 timsr1001 Raider suggestion, Baby

Hi all, any thoughts on this? I think this would make baby a very unique raider.
Positives of Baby
When baby downs a player, baby transfers into that player. The computer then controls the survivor player who can take two hits before getting downed.
When that player is downed by their team they can revive them. And the player can regain control.
Negatives of Baby
Baby will only have one health bar, and will not regain health upon transforming into later forms
Baby also cannot sense energy.
At level threea super transfer a super transphere SS4 Goku will drop
Blackstar Dragon Balls will also be usable. However, once the Blackstar Dragon Ball is used for either the survivor or Baby. A three minute timer will start, once the time reaches zero. Both the players and baby will lose and receive bronze medals.
(high risk/ reward to use the Dragon Balls)
LV1: Baby Has two abilities. He came directly control a survivor after downing them until getting knocked out of the survivor. This skill has a 300 second cool down so realistically will only be used once in most matches.
He can travel like goo like super Buu
LV2: Baby Vegeta final form Nothing too special about this form, he’s an OK level two raider. Basically the equivalent of base goku black in combat. The transformation gauge will automatically build up. Just like for Ginyu.
LV3 Great Monkey Baby In a reverse of APE Vegeta this form has a timer before it runs out.
The player will only have this form for 300 seconds. 200 seconds. But it will be ultra powerful during this time. SS4 Goku, will likely be needed to stand a chance.
But even that form alone will quickly lose a fight because his ki blasts are so big unconscious control, and vanishing will have very little affect. The SS4 Goku transphere will disappear when there is only 90 seconds left if it has not been used
LV 4 Adult Baby This form is weak. Basically the equivalent of a level two. However, this form will regain the abilities of baby to liquefy and control a survivor. The cool down times for all of his abilities and moves are cut in half from the level one
And there you have it the most unique raider in the game. Any thoughts, and also, how would you play or play against this raider?

2024.05.05 10:52 MurphyParadox Yet Another Look At Dragon Ball's Earth

Yet Another Look At Dragon Ball's Earth
I'm doing this again because aside from the Calculation of the Earth's Size in Dragon Ball, there's counterarguments that need to be adressed alongside it.
Part One: The Size of Dragon Ball's Earth First, getting this out of the way, The Daizenshuu is reliable according to Toriyama himself and has his seal of approval.
https://preview.redd.it/wpmcsvj3nkyc1.png?width=380&format=png&auto=webp&s=27c1ffbc3ca97ea502a16e7e63b8c8ba555e1b3a
"It seems that the Fourth Volume is a Dragon Ball “World Guide”. I think that the staff all worked very hard, particularly on the Buildings’ Layouts, the Maps, and whatnot. On top of just sloppily drawing things by the seat of my pants, there are many things that not even I had precisely determined. Weren’t they a bit fed up with how things didn’t come together consistently? I’m very sorry." - Akira Toriyama on Daizenshuu 4
This is important because within the Daizenshuu can be found a Map of Dragon Ball's Earth.
https://preview.redd.it/icnwa2e4nkyc1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=019f0b5b3d7635003b893b77714d5a3ff81afdff
Here, the Distance between The Red Ribbon Army Headquarters and Karin's Sanctuary is 23.6 Pixels. This is important because we know this is equivalent to 2300 Kilometers.
https://preview.redd.it/4mzy84d9nkyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=3980b1b4b9c1b60a6a98b0db5901343eb0207b67
https://preview.redd.it/zlvy19z9nkyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=b19b9a5d673f32b5b1080b2f58885d85128332b3
With this, we can figure out the Circumference of The Earth, as it's Circumference is 698 Pixels, which would equate to 68,025 Kilometers, notably larger than that of our own.
Part Two: Adressing The Counterarguments
Counterargument #1: Contradicting Statements The biggest counterargument used against Dragon Ball's Earth is the various inconsistencies that arise when this Map is employed, particularly regarding other Statements in the Manga. The first of these Statements comes from Trunks.
https://preview.redd.it/cee0334bnkyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=4b7c825a3e8a45da282c8079533253da5917c355
The Distance between where the Android appear is 14.8 Pixels on the Map, which equates to 1,442 Kilometers, very different from the 9 Kilometers he claimed. However, the details of this is important, as Trunks' warning to the Dragon Team isn't entirely accurate. For one, he was wrong on the time that Goku got ill.
https://preview.redd.it/9csmubwbnkyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=a701d2ed1c5e1b4732eb595e785469780cdf19ac
Rather than getting the Virus and dying before the Android's Assault on South City, Goku starts showing major symptoms on the Day of the Androids' Arrival. Another thing is that he seemingly believes C19 and C20 were the ones who betrayed Dr. Gero and killed him.
https://preview.redd.it/i7i82ppcnkyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=d5f2482e4785c037577ec1fabc9a7c11a895ff65
This is obviously wrong, not only was it C17 and C18 who betrayed Gero instead, but C20 is literally Dr. Gero himself. Obviously, we know both C17 and C18 are the ones ravaging the Original Timeline, so it's possible that their Numbers are different, yet they still refer to each other with the same Names they have in the Main Timeline, so this is another inconsistency with his description.
https://preview.redd.it/psbjlmmdnkyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=51606269f3eabc3b3b3ecf56e2ddc416f8b5565c
https://preview.redd.it/siyhjseenkyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=ed12ca431d8caa7134f3981893aa81af9fa1ae95
These differences between the Timelines are revealed to be the result of Cell going back in Time several Years before.
https://preview.redd.it/td1pr48fnkyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=c2fd4ed4766d0b86c3f82d246d38f693cd55a701
Hence, due to the inconsistencies with Trunks' Story, and the fact that the majority of details were altered due to Cell's trip to the past, the Landing Spot of C19 and C20 can also be different, without contradicting anything. Another Statement used to contradict the Map is Yamcha saying the Distance between Kame House and where they were being over 10,000 Kilometers.
https://preview.redd.it/v147ujsfnkyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=f6e20d31955ddc682aaaf26094c82b2cbaed6f1e
The Distance between these Locations is 430 Pixels, or over 41,907 Kilometers. It's obvious why this is not a contradiction, these Statements are mutually inclusive, since all Yamcha says is over 10,000 Kilometers, this is not a contradiction at all. The final of these contradictory Statements comes from Erasa.
https://preview.redd.it/pvkvvtngnkyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=7cf9af4cfb461f5ad698839b70b3d177f0698315
Goku and Chi-Chi built their home right next to that of Granpa Gohan's, which is over 4,000 Kilometers away from Satan City on the Map. But once again, this Statement is not a contradiction, as her saying over 1,000 Kilometers again makes these Statements mutually inclusive.
Counterargument #2: The Earth is Modelled after our own
Outside of the existence of Earth, we also know that Jupiter exists within the Universe of Dragon Ball.
https://preview.redd.it/67lt060inkyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=2f7f9682c88e3dd61794a7706b28f1dcbdec8a10
People use this to claim that The Solar System thus must be the same as our own. However, this is not the case, as there is a Statement found in Daizenshuu 7 that contradicts it.
https://preview.redd.it/mjo49prinkyc1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=abad88b94cbd6a8f47f6645586d10e0bfca33e6c
"The Universe is the Space that extends infinitely and embraces all Forms that exist in the World. In the Universe, there are Nebulae containing countless Stars and Galaxies containing countless Nebulae. Each Galaxy has its own God. Earth resides in the Solar System, a Galactic Nebula at the Edge of the Northern Galaxy." - Daizenshuu 7, Page 44
Although some interpert the Statement as saying the Solar System resides within a Nebula rather than being an actual Nebula itself, it doesn't matter, since both of these Statements come in contrast with the idea that the Solar System is the same as our own. Furthermore, the Earth in Dragon Ball is politically and geomorphologically different. Outside of the geomorphological differences being evident on the actual Map itself, there is the fact that the entire World is united and a Monarchy, the technological advances way beyond those of our own, it being divided into 43 Providences, and the fact that animals within it are sentient. These things prove the Earth in Dragon Ball is nowhere close to a replica of our own.
https://preview.redd.it/kjy4ubmjnkyc1.png?width=1820&format=png&auto=webp&s=a505450d6d95426b5a59f5601c38b1fcdee0ce89
https://preview.redd.it/jurkygkknkyc1.png?width=1820&format=png&auto=webp&s=cb7d38aec8089d107cb3268bd702a38c96bf6220
https://preview.redd.it/yno1vttmnkyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=70cba677a08e29d2c5fc9d78a8209da893142597
https://preview.redd.it/hrkbq7cnnkyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=b22a31d74da28c0f327ba94354036a4e39083308
Part Three: Additional Calculations Now that we know both the Circumference of The Earth, we can figure out a ton more Information regarding it, since it is a Terrestrial Planet just like our own, we can assume it has similar Density.
  • Circumference: 68,025 Kilometers
  • Radius: 10,827 Kilometers
  • Diameter: 21,654 Kilometers
  • Volume: 5.316E+21 Cubic Meters
  • Density: 5,511 KG/M^3
  • Mass: 2.830E+25 Kilograms
  • Gravitational Acceleration: 16.113 M/S^2
  • Gravitational Binding Energy: 2.962E+33 Joules or 707.93 Zettatons (Planet Level)

2024.05.05 08:15 ChuckACupcake Im on my period rn and everyone is so godamn irritating

Welcome to my tedtalk where i will lowkey be shit talking my friends (over stupid stuff) :)
Usually at school im so dead tired and i dont want to to talk to anyone, even my friends, and them trying to engage in small talk with me can get on my nerves just a little bit but i dont let it get to me because im trying to become a kind, functioning, human being! And usually, my periods aren't that bad. Sometimes, i have insane period cramps that make me ragdoll onto the floor in a sweaty, dying lump, but that's only occasional. But this time, it's so bad because i literally want to slap everyone i know.
I have this one friend who has no godamn fucking sense of personal space what so ever and walks in a way i can only describe as a bumbling, lumbering, oaf and just constantly bumps into me and swerves into me while we're walking and when her, my other friend, and i are walking together she always tries to get in between us or she ends up pushing either one of us in the middle and continues to do so until we're basically banging against each other (the other girl legit has adhd and sensory issues and doesnt like being touched and being too close to loud crowds and people YET OUR FRIEND STILL DECIDES TO CONSTANTLY DO THIS) and ITS SO FUCKING IRRITATING IM SO DONE WITH IT.
And at lunch, my other friend and i had ate in this nice quiet ish corner and it was peaceful and everthing yk, but then miss girl with no sense of personal space all but plops her stuff in front of me and legit says "move", because me and my other friend were sitting next to each other and she wanted to be in the middle but i couldnt really move because i was sitting next to a office door way and the hallway was really small and kind of crowded. But she still asked me to move anyway and had the audacity to yell at me again, too??? Like any other day or week and my people pleasing self would've happily let her squeeze in between my other friend and i, but now?? Fuck no.
ALSO, she just HAD to bring ALL her friends she was sitting with before (because our 1 hour ish lunch is split into 2 periods so she would come to me when the bell would ring for the 2nd half of lunch) so now our closest thing to peace in a lunch period where literally all 4 grades are shoved in all at once, had been ruined.
Then i wanted to go outside where it was quieter, but hotter; a sacrifice i was willing to make. Girl with no sense of personal space wanted to come with me so we went to the crowded ass cafeteria because it lead outside, and while my friend was a little bit behind me i was tried to speed up my pace a little when squeezing past cramped tables BUT THEN MY FRIEND LITERALLY SPEEDS UP AT THE SAME TIME AND TRIES TO SQUEEZE IN WITH ME AND WE END UP BUMPING INTO EACH OTHER. I swear to holy jesus christ i was about to throw her into a trash can, and just thinking about it right now is making me feel a little violent. LIKE SHE CAN LITERALLY SEE ME IN FRONT OF HER WHAT THE FUCK IS SHE THINKING.
Then in 7th period we were tasked with getting the gym ready for AP testing and all the tables are really close together and SHE KEPT ON BUMPING INTO ME😭. And i told her to stop bumping into me and you know what she does??? SHE GIVES ME A "PLAYFUL" SHOVE KNOCKING ME INTO ONE OF THE TABLES AND RATTLING THE TABLE SO MUCH THAT THE ALL PENCILS I JUST PLACED THERE ROLL OFF THE DESK. I cannot lie i was about to cry with how much i wanted to scream at her. And then she was justing giggling and laughing like the little troll she was.
Then after we were done setting up the gym we went to the other gym where all the other gym student were. We saw one of our old friends and sat in front of her and my friend and her start talking about me like i wasnt even there. I KNOW IT WAS TEASING BECAUSE THATS THEIR THING (plus we come from similar cultures) BUT STILL. Like they were literally acting like my parents who make fun of me as a way to introduce me and as a conversation starteice breaker when theyre catching up with their friends and im so fucking sick of it. Im tired of being laughed at even if its light hearted teasing because it makes me feel like an accessory and no one ever takes it seriously.
And then i started drawing naruto and the old friend was like "is that naruto???" And my friend with no sense of personal space started yapping to her and was making fun of my random interests and how i was suddenly obsessed with it and how that was all i ever drew.
She even tried bringing up something from MONTHS ago to try and make fun of me. It was when i was struggling to draw goku for my dads fucking birthday and she was saying how "it looked like a godamn porcupine", LIKE WOW NO SHIT.
AND THEN they started teasingly talking about how much i hate them just because i dont want to greet them every single time i see them or respond to their messages in 5 seconds. And that kinda hurt A LOT. But i was still more annoyed than hurt.
If i wasnt on my period i probably wouldnt be so sensitive, i hate being a girl sometimes.

It's obvious why this is not a contradiction, these Statements are mutually inclusive, since all Yamcha says is over 10,000 Kilometers, this is not a contradiction at all. The final of these contradictory Statements comes from Erasa.
https://preview.redd.it/pf037of38fyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=1b2be6eec2efe7be2e6011fa191991e667942f48
Goku and Chi-Chi built their home right next to that of Granpa Gohan's, which is over 4,000 Kilometers away from Satan City on the Map. But once again, this Statement is not a contradiction, as her saying over 1,000 Kilometers again makes these Statements mutually inclusive.
Counterargument #2: The Earth is Modelled after our own
Outside of the existence of Earth, we also know that Jupiter exists within the Universe of Dragon Ball.
https://preview.redd.it/chpz3nkv7fyc1.png?width=1560&format=png&auto=webp&s=d62146b94a6b12f8a28d1072a315b7bf67927f19
People use this to claim that The Solar System thus must be the same as our own. However, this is not the case, as there is a Statement found in Daizenshuu 7 that contradicts it.
https://preview.redd.it/9338399x7fyc1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=0b1e92c7ef401ac923bf9d63d524b370738507a5
"The Universe is the Space that extends infinitely and embraces all Forms that exist in the World.

Part Three: Additional Calculations Now that we know both the Circumference of The Earth, we can figure out a ton more Information regarding it, since it is a Terrestrial Planet just like our own, we can assume it has similar Density.

2024.05.03 20:54 RealDovahkiin Champion Concept Based on Goku

I just saw Riot August's TikTok joking about adding Goku to the game, so I had an idea of what a Goku inspired League champ could be. For the Sake of this post I'll call him Kogu
Obviously this is just an outline so please don't cry about how overpowered this kit would be. Stuff can be removed or replaced
Aesthetic: Kogu is an ape-like vastayan (with crazy spiky hair) who's lived most of his life growing, fighting, and learning in the spirit realm.
Kogu's enhances his Ki level by spending gold and defeating enemy champions. The amount defeating an enemy enhances him is based on how strong they are and how close the fight was (Zenkai boost). Dying, however, causes Kogu to lose a signicant amount of Ki. Kogu's Ki level enhances his adaptive force, attack speed, health, armor, magic resist, and mana.
Kogu's ranged attacks deal 50-75(based on levl)% AD + 40% AP damage (can crit like Kayle's passive waves)
Ranged Attacks deal 80% AD plus 25% AP Damage
Kogu blinks behind the enemy target and unleashes a flurry of 3 basic attacks, which can be cancelled by inputting a move command, which Kogu will instead make a small (about 300 units) dash towards.
Kogu channels an energy ball over his head, drawing Ki from himself as well as nearby champions and minions. The amount each entity boosts the Ki Bomb is based on their level and the amount of gold they've spent (and what type of minion they are).
Drawing Ki from each ally takes time (based on level). Kogu Prioritizes drawing Ki from the most powerful allies first.
Kogu can release Ki Bomb as a devestating AOE attack, or he can consume it to heal himself. Any overheal from this instead temporarily boosts his Ki level.
Aright I know this is really complicated with a lot long abilities (insert Nasus passive joke here), but I think Kogu would be very fun, bring DBZ fans to the game, and pay homage to the legend Akira Toriyama.

2024.05.01 08:02 Odd-Pirate7895 What if Goku Didn't Have Kids? Part 35

Previously: https://www.reddit.com/MasakoX/s/YK3X0FDvvD
Part 1: https://www.reddit.com/MasakoX/s/SFtFEl2hLM
While 18 soaks in the joys of winning a fat check, the story otherwise proceeds identically to the original. Shin and Kibito are the Supreme Kai and his attendant. They've come to Earth to stop the wizard Bobbidi from reviving the Majin Buu and save the universe. They entered the tournament to enlist Goku and his allies to help him and as part of a plan to find Bobbidi's ship. This very indirect way of asking for help annoys the Dragon Team, but they are happy to help.
They track Yami and Spopovich back to Bobbidi's ship and discreetly see Bobbidi, Puipui, and Dabura rear their heads. Shin and Kibito didn't realize Bobbidi made Dabura his servant and need to assure Piccolo that yes, Dabura is the stronger demon, so stay hidden. Yamu and Spopovich are killed by Bobbidi and Puipui, Kibito is killed by Dabura, and the entire Dragon Team except for Goku, Piccolo, and 17 are turned to stone by Dabura. Killing Dabura is the only way to break that spell, so despite Shin's objections, the trio enter the ship to play Bobbidi's game.
Puipui steps up first, and 17 beats him while expending no effort. Yakkon is next, and not only does Goku beat him in the same way as the original, but 7 years of Super Saiyan being his base form means he doesn't lose it even when Yakkon sucks the light away, showing off how strong he is. Where it gets interesting is Piccolo vs. Dabura. They posture for a bit, trying to see who can flex the bigger demon muscles. Dabura is prejudiced against the Mazoku, not viewing them as real demons, while Piccolo says that after he kills Dabura, he's going to make a pilgrimage to the Makai and take it over. A light bulb goes off in Bobbidi's head, but he decides to wait before carrying it out.
While this Piccolo is stronger than his canon counterpart, Dabura one-ups him being still being as powerful as canon Perfect Cell. So while Big Green is putting up a good fight with some creative strategies, Dabura is the superior fighter. Delicious energy is flowing to further Majin Buu's resurrection, but Bobbidi is unsatisfied. Eventually, just when it seems like Dabura and Piccolo are about to trade killing strikes, Bobbidi calls Dabura off and has him retreat. Then, Piccolo feels a pain rip through his head as Bobbidi attempts to take over his mind.
But it's not that easy. While this Piccolo is still a Demon and plenty evil, Kami is part of him, and is blocking Bobbidi from having full access to Piccolo. Bobbidi can only draw out some of, but not all of, Piccolo's potential, and his control will be temporary. The best he can manage in this scenario. But it's still enough to give us a Majin Piccolo that is stronger than Dabura.
They return to the tournament grounds and Piccolo incinerates a crowd of onlookers, with Piccolo announcing the return of Piccolo Daimao (along with his new "Piccolo Daimakami" title he gave himself). Despite Shin's objections, Goku decides to power up and throw down with Piccolo, on the condition Bobbidi sends them to a place with no people. Bobbidi obliges, so Shin and 17 fly off to stop him while Goku and Piccolo have their fight. To further showcase his training over the past 7 years, Goku unveils Super Saiyan 2, but he doesn't see it as a new transformation. He simply acts as though it's another extension of regular Super Saiyan. But that's fine with Piccolo, because now, the two of them are even, and the fight can begin.
The rivals clash, but after just butting heads for a bit, they talk a bit more. In this version, Piccolo never properly redeemed, and Goku always had a feeling this moment would come. On some level, he's wanted it to come, but he didn't want to admit it. Piccolo then finally unloads his motivations, and it comes out quite powerfully. His sole purpose, his life's mission from BIRTH, has been an utter failure. He hasn't been strong enough to rival and kill Goku in a VERY long time, and there's always been some bigger threat in the way forcing him to ally with Goku just so he wouldn’t have competition in taking over the world. During the Cell arc, it reached a climax where he had to give up his individuality by fusing with Kami, the one who cast him out in the first place, and he still had to leave it to Goku in the end. When he sees Goku's corpse lay at his feet, Bobbidi and Dabura are next. Then, Shin, 17, and Dende. Then the others, one by one, until there's nothing left to get in his way.
Finally, the two have decide the time for words is over and begin to go at it again. Despite their insane power, they're keeping it mostly grounded. They aren't really flying, and they're relying on just their hand-to-hand martial arts skills. They deal a decent amount of damage to each other, and Piccolo uses his stretchy arms a couple of times, but it's relatively subdued. That is, until the climax of the fight, where they go all out. Piccolo jumps backwards high into the air, lands on the ground, then flings himself at Goku with an outstretched palm for a Demon Flash Strike. Goku responds by standing his ground and unveiling his new technique, the Dragon Fist.
The attacks collide, and a massive explosion visible from space is the end result. When the smoke clears, Piccolo is stumbling back, while Goku is charging up a Kamehameha. Piccolo is shellshocked, his body unable to move, leaving him vulnerable as Goku unleashes the iconic blast. With Piccolo rendered unconscious, the M script on his forehead disappears, which gives Goku a measure of relief. Relief that doesn't last long as he senses a massive Ki in the distance. distance.
Majin Buu has been revived.

2024.04.30 22:20 Queen-of-Sharks Undertale AU Fighting Game concept roster 2

Thank you to u/mehakarin69 for the following additions:

Characters
(Note: Twisted campaign is an alternate version of the campaign mode with new battles and a second story that takes place alongside the main campaign. It’s also way harder. Sounds complicated, but there’s not a chance this game is ever getting made anyway, so it’s fine.)
Stages
Feel free to suggest whatever characters or costumes you want to see added to this roster. My only rule for suggestions is I’m not allowing anything from Alphatale or Godverse.
Next time I post about this game concept, I will be going into detail on the controls and mechanics of the game.

2024.04.28 19:16 Bat-Gos An in-depth scale on Dragon Ball's Cosmology: Analysis and Explanation

An in-depth scale on Dragon Ball's Cosmology: Analysis and Explanation
Hello everyone. Today, I would like to cover Dragon Ball's cosmology, which has been misrepresented in this sub quite a lot and there are certain misconceptions that I would like to correct to create a more general consensus and embrace new metas. I'll be going over each and every important layer of the cosmology. So, let's begin.

Canon

Dragon Ball's canon is mostly clear, but there are a few gray areas that I want to clear up. Obviously, there is the original 2 Dragon Ball manga series (with the second one later being dubbed "Z") and Dragon Ball Super's anime, which are usable by default. However, Dragon Ball Z's anime has a bit of filler (scenes that are not in the original manga, but in the anime) which most people don't really use. I disagree with that notion.
Toriyama endorses filler, with he himself designing and conceptualizing many of the characters and story beats and giving it after that to the writers to go wild with. there's no reason it shouldn't be used. “Filler” material for television series adaptations is something that original authors are generally given the option to consult on, and in the case of Dragon Ball, there are certainly confirmed, explicit, documented cases of Akira Toriyama’s involvement. Filler doesn't even really contradict anything in the original manga either, so it's fine to use.
Additionally, stuff like guidebooks such as the Daizenshuu are explicitly canon. The Daizenshuu is able to be used, since Toriyama condones its use and says the Daizenshuu is more credible on the series than himself. It's quite literally the official Dragon Ball lore book.
Adding to that, Dragon Ball has other unpopular media for scaling that is explicitly canon (as supported by the official website) like Dragon Ball Z: The Anime Adventure Game, and Dragon Ball Online (Ignore mentions of XenoVerse 2). Dragon Ball Online was heavily written by Akira Toriyama, and XenoVerse material such as Mira does not contradict this, as they appear in other Toriyama-supported material such as Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.
For Dragon Ball Super, things are much different though. The anime and manga are both entirely separate continuities that are still used by many. However, they are still both canon in their own way and mostly follow the same major story beats and plot points.
Although, I do believe that the manga actually has more legitimacy. This is because during the 2018 events of the Tokyo Skytree + Viz North America Tour, the official canon history of the Dragon Ball franchise was revealed. / The expose included a History of Dragon Ball timeline confirming the events of the Dragon Ball Super manga to be the "canon sequel" (正統続編, seitō zokuhen; Literally meaning "legitimate sequel") to Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga. This also implies that the DBS Anime is not a direct sequel, but rather, an adaptation of Toriyama's note. This is further backed up by the anime seeming to have direct references to the DBZ Anime exclusive content, such as Gregory, and the Namekian Frog filler from Namek Saga, this might lead some to believe that the DBS: Anime is a direct follow-up to the anime series, including fillers. The DBS anime still does have legitimacy and is still canon of course due to Toriyama stating and considering it a direct continuation of his Majin Buu arc as shown this interview from 2015, but I just thought that this was something worth noting.
Lastly, Arale is also canon (this might seem random to mention, but it'll be important for later).
To conclude this section, everything from Dragon Ball (anime and manga), Dragon Ball Z (anime and manga (although the manga never had the "Z" title added to it), Dragon Ball Super (anime and manga), content from official guides and encyclopedias, and canon and officially supported material is irrefutably canon (also Arale).
Now that that is cleared up, let me begin with the actual cosmology scale.

Cosmology

The Universe 7 Macrocosm
https://preview.redd.it/xab8mj9o59xc1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=9710d6ae7f495a3811d8cda1da8778a7e26775a7
The official Dragon Ball Daizenshuu has described the mortal universe as “An infinite space.”, “The darkness that stretches out into infinity”, “The endless, expansive space wrapped around every celestial body that exists in the Living World.”, and “the infinitely expansive universe [of the living world].”. There are also statements regarding the cosmological bodies within the mortal universe such as stars and galaxies, with the Daizenshuu stating that “Within the universe, there are ‘nebulae’ composed of innumerable stars, and there are ‘galaxies’ composed of innumerable nebulae” and “The division of galaxies into east, west, north, south, is a unit used by Kami and Kaio of the heavenly realm for business purposes in order to supervise the infinite number of galaxies that exist in outer space.” There is also a statement in the guide that states the universe is infinitely expanding, though infinitely expanding just means it is expanding forever and not that its size specifically is infinite, so it isn’t relevant.
To go more in detail as to why these statements would specifically indicate infinite size and not something else:
  • “An infinite space” cannot really mean anything other than, well, infinite space or room. Pretty clear.
  • “stretches out into infinity” would imply space stretches out an infinite distance.
  • For “endless expansive space”, it is important to remember expansive does not mean expanding. The definition of expansive is “covering a wide area in terms of space or scope; extensive or wide-ranging.”. If something is expansive it means it is already covering an area, not that it will over time. Considering the “wide area” that is being covered is “endless” meaning it has no end, that would imply infinite expansive space.
  • The previously established definition of “expansive” also applies to “infinitely expansive universe”. Expansive here is being described as “infinitely” and thus infinite size is implied.
  • “innumerable” is often used as hyperbole so this statement in particular is not too strong. However it is consistent with the other infinite size statements and thus should not be instantly dismissed.
  • If there are an “infinite number of galaxies” in space, then space must be infinite in size to contain them. Pretty simple.
In conclusion Dragon Ball has four notable statements calling the mortal universe infinite, and two statements mentioning an infinite amount of cosmological objects.
Since the mortal realm is irrefutably infinite in size, Heaven, by proxy would be infinite as the size of Heaven is the same size as the universe. Hell is comparable if not larger and contains multiple distinct levels with Frieza's Hell being its own level for him alone. The Demon Realm is a dimension comparable in size to the universe and exits on its reverse side. The Kaioshin Realm is 1/10th the size of the Macrocosm. The Grand Kaio's realm contains a mansion that has its own starry sky and is implied to be universal in size and has a different dimensional space. This means that the worlds of the macrocosm already contain multiple infinities. However, this is excluding the macrocosm's most important cosmological argument...
All these realms outside the mortal universe are in the Afterlife/Otherworld, where people go when they die. The Afterlife is not connected to the universe except on the most metaphysical level, being a realm that encompasses another level of reality. It lacks the very concepts of time (and by proxy, space), which is consistent with how it has been depicted. The Afterlife is also non-corporeal.
Most importantly though, the Afterlife has a very interesting statement from the Daizenshuu 4.
Translation: \"天よりも高く、人間界からは窺い知ることができない次元を超越した天の国神々はこの地から世界のすべてを見おろしている \"
"The gods of the heavenly kingdom, which is higher than the heavens and transcends dimensions that cannot be seen from the human world, look down on everything in the world from this earth," is the English translation as per Google Translate, which is backed up by an extremely credible and official translator, translating it to: "Higher than the sky, a dimensionally transcendental heavenly country that cannot be perceived from the human realm," showing how it's higher-d. This is consistent with it being non-corporeal and lacking time itself (which you could also argue as outerversal since it lacks the very concepts, but I disagree with that and don't want to get crucified for raising the possibility of a 1-A canon DBS argument so I'll leave it at that).
For those refuting this by bringing up Cipher's translation, which didn't really say anything about a dimensional transcendence, but this can be debunked by the fact that Cipher considers using Herms' translations before asking him, a Japanese native interprets it as dimensionality, and Cipher himself has translated it to extra-dimensional too (which can, in certain cases be referring to higher dimensions).
Additionally, there is also this statement, that sorta reaffirms and ends the debate on whether the Afterlife is truly higher-d or not:
https://preview.redd.it/ch6hj53z59xc1.png?width=581&format=png&auto=webp&s=d06bd079fef39f2acb291ce0630a6647831b1e4b
This means that Dragon Ball's macrocosm is already at least 5-D at the minimum, but there's also another (better) argument for 5-D Dragon Ball to tackle.
The Dimension of Strange Swirling Lights
https://preview.redd.it/c0f0muh169xc1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=8f34b981fd05f217ba4c513b05fb4b3c338ab9a5
In the Broly movie, Broly and Gogeta's clash energy beam clash is so powerful that they tear into another dimension. This setting was described in the Broly Anime Comic as super-dimensional several different times. The kanji used here explicitly refers to higher dimensional spaces. It is also stated to be an extra-dimension. More evidence for this is that Gogeta and Broly broke through the dimensional boundaries, landing then in this super dimension. They did this by distorting space-time, breaching the limits of the universe, tearing dimensional walls apart, then "disintegrating" the dimension to leave it. Their power was stated to be too much for the universe to handle. They completely disintegrated this higher dimension without even trying.
If you're still not convinced, the production crew for this movie themselves stated that they were trying to create higher dimensional imagery using CGI. Based on these scans, they used a modeling technique based on mathematics to create a super-dimensional image. They couldn't do this since standard modeling is 3D. Their volume is based on mathematical formulas, humans can't comprehend such expressions, and modeling them is the equivalent of modeling obscure math in the third dimension.
This should show that this dimension is beyond 3D and is explicitly shown to be a higher spatial dimension. And since Broly and Gogeta destroyed it, this should make both of them and any character who scales to them 5th dimensional in power.
Now, one might argue 6-D using both these arguments, for that is unlikely, as there is no showing of quantitative superiority between these two dimensions, meaning Dragon Ball is still infinite 4-D with two 5-D spaces.
The Neutral Zone
https://preview.redd.it/n6q74bh669xc1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=cb9f2f09f1336ccdde1122030ac2ae6ed643b1d2
The neutral zone is a space that surrounds all of the 12 universes. This space was used for holding the tournament between beerus and champ in the universe 6 arc. There lied a nameless planet that the tournament was held on, the neutral space also appears in various depictions of the 12 universes. As seen here, these spacetimes are parallel to each other, existing in the same physical space, yet never able to interact with/or meet each other, which, wouldn't be possible unless existing across a 5-D plane. So no matter how far they expand, or move in any direction, they can't come into contact, and it should be like that anyway since the are separate spacetimes. For two line segments to be parallel, you'd have to set it so they wouldn't touch regardless of how far they are extended, which wouldn't be possible if they stood side-by-side in 1-D space as in here, meaning you would need them to be displaced over a plane. Same thing happens with planes: For them to be parallel, they shouldn't ever be able to meet, so you'd need them to be displaced over 3-D space. Generalizing that to the 4-D case, spacetimes would obviously have to be displaced over a 5-D region (This works by definition, too: If they're different spacetime continuums then obviously they can't share the same space, in the way 3-D objects exist around us for instance).
This would make the Neutral Zone 6-D...if only it had any proof of being infinite in size, or viewing lower ones as fiction/infinitesimal/zero in scope, which are aprt of the standards of being 5-D, which is why is was dubbed "insignificant 5-D" on VSBW.
Timeline(s)
https://preview.redd.it/wm9inf3a69xc1.png?width=534&format=png&auto=webp&s=bf1a39a2d492c4a81816e2e8a474b80de1d017e3
So, the Dragon Ball multiverse consists of 12+ universal space-times which have an additional overarching timeline. This is what's known as a hypertimeline.
The fact that these are encompassed by the overarching timeline means that there are two temporal dimensions, which would warrant for a higher dimensional scale as: "The relationship between the spatial dimensions of a universe and the additional temporal dimension(s) may be visualized as something akin to the frames of a movie placed side-by-side. Basically, the time-like direction may be thought of as a line comprised of uncountably infinite points, each of which is a static "snapshot" of the whole universe at any given moment, with the set of all such events comprising the totality of spacetime. This structure can then be generalized to any number of dimensions, which is why destroying a spacetime continuum is a greater feat than destroying only the contents of the physical universe (Low 2-C, rather than 3-A or High 3-A). A spacetime continuum with two time axis, instead of just one, could likewise be visualized as a line comprised of uncountably infinite points, each of which is a static "snapshot" of the entire regular timeline with 3 space and 1 time dimension. It would hence be one level of qualitative superiority above a timeline and as such baseline Low 1-C. Similarily, adding even more time dimensions would add one level of qualitative superiority each time."
This means that we finally have something to fill the quantitative superiority of the Neutral Zone, and the Hypertimeline encompassing the multiverse means that 5 spatial + 1 temporal dimension = 5-D.
It has been stated that there are tons of timelines and timelines are created over the smallest possible action such as Beerus destroying Zamasu creating a world where Zamasu wasn't destroyed, meaning that we are looking at countless 6-D structures here. And infinite timelines in backed up by Dragon Ball Online. So, Dragon Ball has infinite 6-D timelines.
The Many Worlds Interpretation
What Trunks was explaining in that scan (supported by the new timeline after killing Infinite Zamasu) is word-for-word the Many Worlds Interpretation. The many-worlds interpretation implies that there are most likely an uncountable number of universes. It is one of a number of multiverse hypotheses in physics and philosophy. MWI views time as a many-branched tree, wherein every possible quantum outcome is realized. This is recognized as existing within the DB universe by Trunks and on its website as well. Hell, Future Bulma deadass writes these as part of her notes on time traveling (This is a harder concept to grasp, so these explanations should convey it to you). Let's take a look at this scan:
https://preview.redd.it/a6luoa8c69xc1.png?width=350&format=png&auto=webp&s=e48eff0e7cc2f56eaed06681f01eec7f77d94235
To achieve a number of infinite basis elements in quantumm mechanics, momentum eigenstates (which your friend says can be infinite-d in his vector space post) and plane waves. These are characterized by the bottom left wave function circled.
This scan states "chou-kuu-kan" which translates to "super-space" and how it functions as supergravity (as it sucks up verything and what is displayed in the scan). Supergravity is a type of quantum field theory of elementary subatomic particles and their interactions that is based on the particle symmetry known as supersymmetry. Hell, the definition of "super-space" is literally "a space of infinitely many dimensions postulated to contain actual space-time and all possible spaces." Super-space by nature, exhibits super-symmetry. This goes back to what I said about infinite basis elements from that wave function symbol.
https://preview.redd.it/3cffzc6h69xc1.png?width=435&format=png&auto=webp&s=dddb49d12cc348bbb2ef58a9cce8cb619a92b319
https://preview.redd.it/ciadlb7i69xc1.png?width=780&format=png&auto=webp&s=085b57d1965c2e6bd807bc2dc0aed7d5f1170a4d
So essentially, Dragon Ball's MWI is more elaborated and detailed as infinite-d, with a supersymmetrical nature and plane waves characterized as an infinite bases for a system. And its elaboration as a super-space and supersymmetry already qualifies as infinite-d. However, no one scales as this infnite-d is branched off sperately from the timelines and from what characters have shown to affect (except DBH, but that's a discussiong for another time).

In Dr. Slump (which I have proven as canon) there exists a world which views Dr. Slump manga as just a book of fiction and the author of the said book akira toriyama also resides here with his fellow roomates and this world is also implied t have r>f transcendence over dr slump and Dragon Ball. The author draws over it and views it as flat fiction. The author patched up Arale's reality after it was torn up.
This shows an r>f transcendence and depending on how you interpret this over DB, it could reach 7-D, depending on if you think it shows qualitative superiority over certain structures. However, it definitely cannot be Outerversal as there is no showing of superiority over the infinite-d spaces, which itself are very debatable and we know little to nothing of them.

Goku (and other characters') hax and resistances

Hax:
Healing: Users of God Ki can heal what would usually be fatal wounds in a matter of seconds. Goku was even able to restart his heart after it had been crushed by Hit.
Extrasensory Perception: God Ki users can sense other godly beings that cannot be sensed by normal Ki users. In fact, Goku’s Ki sensing is so solid that he could detect the real Hit after being surrounded by dozens of perfect copies of his energy.
Pocket Dimensions: Those who use God Ki can manipulate or destroy pocket dimensions that they could not while using normal Ki.
Sealing: Using the Mafuba, he can seal his opponent into a container.
Hakai: Hakai erases the target’s physical body, destroys their soul, and even removes them from the time stream. The Hakai even threatened to erase Arale and succeeded in erasing Dr. Mashirito, both of whom have survived narrative erasure.
Resistances:
Extreme Temperatures: Vegeta was able to withstand his body being covered by Absolute Zero temperatures without issue, and Goku has survived fighting Broly in lava and being near the sun before no problem. Ki in general has also been shown to vaporize and atomize things, implying high temperatures.
Empathy Manipulation: Goku was unaffected by Ribrianne’s aroma, which normally distracts targets by making them filled with love.
Extrasensory Perception: Those with God Ki, such as Goku, cannot be sensed by those with the ability to sense life energy.
Mental Manipulation: Saiyans like Vegeta have resisted the mind control of magic users like Babidi, and Vegeta even let himself be taken under his control in the first place; the moment Vegeta felt like it, he broke out of that control.
Intangibility: When facing Hit a second time, Goku was able to counter Hit’s energy blasts by blocking them with his own Ki. Hit’s long ranged Ki attacks have shown the capability of phasing through surrounding objects and even their targets.
Hakai: On a few occasions, Goku has survived or resisted the Hakai, once even in his base form. Hakai erases the target’s physical body, destroys their soul, and even removes them from the time stream. So Goku would have resistance to Existence Erasure, Temporal Erasure, and Soul Manipulation. The Hakai even threatened to erase Arale and succeeded in erasing Dr. Mashirito, both of whom have survived narrative erasure.
Paralysis Inducement: Escaped Freeza/Frieza’s Imprisonment Ball at the last moment.
Electricity Manipulation: Tanked Fusion Zamasu’s Lightning of Absolution.
Radiation: Can fight in the Earth’s upper atmosphere, where radiations are exceedingly high.
Transmutation: Dragon Ball Ki in general has also been used to block Dabura’s spit, which turns whatever it touches to stone.
Poison Manipulation: Goku’s supernatural will allowed him to survive the Water of the Gods.
Battlefield Removal: Numerous beings in Dragon Ball have broken out of alternate dimensions just by powering up, and Goku’s teleportation gives him a lot of range to return if he's sent too far.
Time Manipulation: In canon, Goku is above Jiren, who is so strong that his strength bypasses time, to the point where he can walk through time stops.
Pressure Point Strikes: During his fight with Granolah, Goku was able to combat his pressure point fighting style by toughening certain parts of his body and moving his organs around.
Information Analysis: Granolah could not find any weak points in Goku due to the properties of Ultra Instinct.
Possibly Magic: Goku broke free of Gas’ gravity spell.
Illusion Creation: Despite Moro’s illusions, Son Goku could sense where the real Moro was.
Spatial Manipulation and Durability Negation: Can tank attacks from Goku Black’s scythe, which could cut through time and space.

Conclusion

Dragon Ball is solidly 7-D, with characters only scaling to 6-D (via Zamasu merging with the timeline) and likely High Hyperversal via the Many Worlds Interpetation, but no one scales to this. They have lots of interesting haxes and resistances as well. Also, the immeasurable speed stuff is here. If this post is accepted enough, then I'll do a DBH one (which can be argued as Outer via MWI). Anyways, if you have any questions, ask away.

An in-depth Dragon Ball Cosmology Scale: Analysis and Explanation

Cosmology

The Universe 7 Macrocosm
https://preview.redd.it/5qh06no0r5xc1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=4f8a4ed9928c8aa36e762b00b50eb416748680f6
Additionally, there is also this statement, that sorta reaffirms and ends the debate on whether the Afterlife is truly higher-d or not:
https://preview.redd.it/5h2g9ur9r5xc1.png?width=581&format=png&auto=webp&s=ab25a59aa2871718a051885ebc7dcf240f00da23
This means that Dragon Ball's macrocosm is already at least 5-D at the minimum, but there's also another (better) argument for 5-D Dragon Ball to tackle.
The Dimension of Strange Swirling Lights
https://preview.redd.it/8qd7wwcbr5xc1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=e06b1815bab25273aab558047050dcc41ad4475c
The Neutral Zone
https://preview.redd.it/u2ymkxfdr5xc1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=3925a7101540769a0d9aab9f092468065be5d9de
Timeline(s)

So essentially, super space is infinite dimensional in this context based on how it is being described, and the quantum mechanics and wave function generate an uncountable amount of infinite universes, with this being infinite dimensional in nature. It's a little hard to wrap your head around, so read it a few times. However, this infinite-d is being branched off seprately from the infinite timelines, so no one would scale and High Hyperversal Goku isn't real. I'm just saying that this can be argued to exist within the cosmology based on what charcaters have literally said and what has been shown.
Arale stuff

2024.04.26 22:09 DarkTortoise23 What Should Monks Be Called In PF2E?

Over the past few days since the release of the Tian Xia World Guide, there has been quite a bit of discussion, here and in the discord, regarding the monk class, what it should be, and whether its design and/or name needs to change to remain in line with Paizo’s stated goals of being inclusive, representative, and built on fun classes instead of tired stereotypes about other cultures. Some have even expressed thoughts about getting rid of monk wholesale, instead integrating unarmed options into the other martial classes. I think this is an interesting discussion to have, and so I want to write out my own thoughts on the topic and where my brain puts me.
So, some background to myself—I’m not Asian or AAPI in any way. I’m a black man born in America to parents who immigrated from Jamaica who probably watched too much anime as a kid. I don’t have a first person perspective on how the stereotypes present and baked into the Monk class from older editions with less care put into their representation harm those who have faced that kind of reduction. Ultimately I can’t make a judgment as to what represents them best or, if they think that the class cannot exist as is without causing that sort of harm, I can’t argue that. What I can talk about is martial arts.
I’ve practiced martial arts(Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Boxing, Kempo, a little bit of HEMA and basic Eskrima) for the better part of 15 years. Most of my juvenile life was spent either learning some form of striking based unarmed combat, or researching other martial arts to see what else was out there to potentially learn. I first discovered Pathfinder 1e in college and naturally drifted toward the admittedly less than optimal Monk class because “it’s a martial arts class, I like martial arts, I like this class.” When 2e dropped and I finally got over my unreasonable fear of switching systems, I was floored over how good the monk class is now. Excellent action economy, high mobility in a system where it matters, competitive armor class even if you don’t max dexterity first level, flavorful abilities, being able to opt in or out of pseudomagical ki spells if it doesn’t fit your character idea, it all just spoke to me. This is what the Monk class always should have been and they have perfected it, I thought. Even better, there are unarmed options baked into other classes and archetypes where you don’t need to play monk in order to play an unarmed fighter. It’s amazing.
And here’s the rub—I think the monk should ultimately stay.
Right now the monk fills a very fun niche. It’s a class that’s very self sufficient—excellent defenses with no real major weaknesses. Their damage is somewhat competitive, but more than that consistent—it essentially has Twin Takedown as a class feature, but doesn’t need to hunt prey. It can invade the enemy backline, strike twice, and then move away to force engagement and waste actions. Mobility and self sufficiency.
I will say that monk does not have that “classic fantasy” feel or origin that most of the other core classes share. Its inspiration comes by and large from other forms of media—Wuxia fantasy, Hong Kong and Hollywood martial arts films from the 70s forward, and, where many newer players draw their monk inspiration from, anime. Its pretty clear that this is where PF2E’s designers also drew much of their inspiration from—a chargeable Ki Blast and Ki Form are much too blatant of homages to ignore in such a discussion. But I think this is something that has its own real role in the game. A lot of people found love for martial arts, genuine love for the medium, through Goku, through these films. There is an element of harm and reduction to those forms of entertainment being some peoples’ only exposure to Asian culture, and I’m not excusing that. But for many, “being Goku” is just as valid a fantasy as a sword wielding High Fantasy character, or a wizard with cosmic power at their fingertips.
The name, however, really can and should go. As many have rightfully pointed out, “Monk” is quite a poor choice of name when the majority of historical monks did not practice unarmed combat as we define it. It confuses newcoming players who don’t have a good picture in their head of what the Tabletop Gaming collective conscious defines as Monk. It’s descriptive of a person who grew up/trained in a monastery, which many monk players choose not to do as their background, and the other classes impose no such background on their player. I think that changing the name is one more way we can distance ourselves from Dragon Game and its roots in harmful cultural stereotypes.
Many alternative names have been fronted—brawler, pugilist, nomad, ascetic, cultivator, and I don’t jive with many of these. Nomad in my opinion has the same issue as Monk itself—its not particularly descriptive of what the class does and indicates something about the character that may not necessarily be true(being nomadic). Ascetic I feel is likewise; it puts a lot of focus on the self discipline aspect of what one would consider a monk, which may not be what people are wanting from the class. Pugilist and brawler I shy away from because those have more connotation with western martial arts, sport fighting and street fighting, all connotations that aren’t necessarily inclusive of many monk ideas. Cultivator immediately brings to mind thoughts of plants, though I think it could work for a Ki spell focused subclass or archetype.
Ultimately, I think Martial Artist works best as a rename, removing the archetype and/or folding it in with the multiclass archetype. It covers practitioners of every unarmed fighting discipline from Western Boxing to Taekwondo to any number of grappling arts worldwide. It’s immediately descriptive of what the class does and what to expect when playing it: Unarmored martial class focused on mobility, combat maneuvers, and fighting either bareknuckle or with particularly evocative weapons. It’s background agnostic, so your character could be a disciple from an Iroran temple, a former prizefighter from the underground circuit in Magnimar, a Capoeira inspired practitioner from the Mwangi Expanse, or any number of places in between. And you can immediately bring to mind characters from fiction evocative of the archetype. Ryu, Sun Wukong, and Bruce Lee’s many characters could not likely be described as monks outside of Tabletop Gaming circles, but you’d be hard pressed not to bring them and others to mind when thinking of Martial Artists. It can be made a more universal class that roots itself in martial traditions worldwide, instead of narrowing itself to a misrepresentation of one section of the world.
While there are more changes than the name that could be made to make monks more inclusive(greatly expanding monk weapon options for one thing), but I think a change to the name is a good start. Thank you for reading if you got this far, I think there is a valid discussion to be had here about what can be done to bring the class more in line with both the class fantasy people want and the respect in representation that people deserve.

2024.04.24 23:00 BAmario Hanachirasu Review

8/10
Hanachirasu presents an interesting challenge with regards to how stories are told. Regardless of the medium, how much less time would be wasted if authors decided to steamroll to their point without obstructions. No side-stories, no divergences, and a new respect for players' time. This game goes full speed ahead right from the start, and embodies its characters with a sense of forlorn realism rarely expected or achieved in contemporary short stories or similar anime-like storylines.
Taking place in an alternate history where nuclear weapons were never invented, Japan was never bombed, and now a new Tokyo is surrounded by walls allowing no guns to pass through. The leader there wants to revitalize the old Japanese spirit, so people speak through their swords rather than their guns. The two opposing sides trying to take over Tokyo are the Takigawa corporation, and the Hokodome-no-kai movement. It is easy to think of this leader as an author self-insert and this game as a passion project given the amount of sword technique exposition, and lore written for a game that is not even an afternoon nap long.
Nitroplus, being no stranger to introducing its main characters at their most vulnerable, starts off the game by showing us a helpless young man taken advantage of by a dominatrix working for the Takigawa corporation. Terrorists attack the building intending to take her out, and easily slice through their defenses to get to her. The boy's face who has up until now been hidden, and neglected by the much bigger emphasis the cg had on his sadist, gets up, grabs his sword, and dons his fate. The boy's face and name are finally revealed as Akane our main character. The entire scene shifts along with the camera, and we immediately feel that something is wrong. He is shown in full view in a Dutch angle while all the colors on screen are intensified to match his lust. This is a technique used very frequently throughout the game, and the cgs are beautifully framed and colored to show each character's frame of mind. He makes quick work of the terrorists, and we are then introduced to his past rival. Yoshia makes his entrance by beheading the aforementioned dominatrix before finally finding Akane, and challenging him to a duel long-in-waiting. His reason is simple, Akane killed his fiancé in cold blood. The game's narrative is set and decided within the first act, but unlike many stories it doesn't take long for the game to make good on its promise within only hours of starting it.
This idea of rivals seeking each other out must be the most overdone cliché in Shounen manga especially because outside of Goku and Vegeta or Joe and Rikishi it has never been done as effectively as the authors thought it should. Others just keep picking up the mantle and only ever seem to succeed in wasting ink. From Naruto to Bleach to My Hero Academia to Black Clover etc... there are so many stories that would've saved the audience plenty of time and investment if we were just given the carrot early. Hanachirasu doesn't pretend to have a grand plan of a narrative slowly being built around its lead characters. Narahara Ittetsu shows the consequences of two characters being hard-set on killing each other in a much more realistic fashion than other titles that make use of similar themes. Tokyo's politics and history have been built for years by people who shed tears and blood getting to where the story starts, and it now rests in the hands of two people who couldn't care less about it. The story starts at its end. These two met, became friends, trained together and had their big fight. What we are playing here is the epilogue. This game came out in 2005, and if only Kishimoto had checked this title out sooner then maybe Naruto and Sasuke wouldn't have had to spend the next 9 years flirting. Someone should show Yūki Tabata this game, so he can put his pen down too.
After losing each other following that original confrontation, they waste no time trying to find each other. Akane, having courted the leader of one of the main branches of the Takigawa corporation, uses her influence to launch a full scale attack on their enemies headquarters. He leads the attack and slices everything and everyone to get to Yoshia, but he is nowhere to be found. The story makes no assumptions about Akane nor does it ask the audience for their sympathies. We are meant to be vexed and fearful of the relief and safety we feel with him as every decision he makes paints him as the villain of the story, even though we are never in doubt over his skills. There is a beautiful moment during the attack where Akane, who has been heeded by his 2nd hand man about the rashness of this endeavor, stops and listens to him. This man was being ignored by us and him, but when Akane stops, it is as much as a shock to him as it was to the audience. He has been peeling back Akane's character only to arrive at what Akane deemed worthy of listening to. He asks the man's name while removing his characteristic smile as they venture further into enemy territory. Moments later after seeing this soldier fall into a trap behind a door, admits that even he wouldn't have been able to stop it either. His personality isn't one born out of convention. His arrogance is one fostered over years of experience and not by the novelty of a child finding a toy and rushing out to test it. He never misses practice and takes it as seriously as any life-threatening battle. It is always reassuring to know that the director can guide us to feeling about a story what he himself felt, and what I felt was that the author knew enough about his characters to make sure I did. Yoshia soon launches a different attack on a main Takigawa Branch only to similarly discover that Akane isn't there. He was visiting his sister in the hospital.
While playing this game, we are saddened by the constant bombardment of lost days spent waiting for other stories to deliver on promises this game dealt with in record time. Gone is the training arc, the rehashed monologues, the philosophical extremities, the second training arc, and the long endless corridor of procrastination. Both these characters want to find each other as soon as possible, but they genuinely don't know where the other one is, so blood is the only crumb they can leave behind. A lot of people get killed in the crossfire, and they all go out the same way as confusion and shock are the only appropriate responses when you are robbed of your life for the crime of involving yourself with them. Characters are introduced and killed within minutes, bonds are forged, pacts are made, and everything comes to a tragic end like a stage falling at the end of a play on an unaware ensemble after giving the performance of their lives.
Of course it is impossible to overstate how much effect the female characters have had in this game. They play a big role in dismantling our perceived notions of the leads. Akane has the charisma to make woman notice him. Throughout the story we see him take on a multitude of partners (most of them consensual), each with a glimpse into the life he's lead. It is only after arriving at that final fight do we understand the hell Akane deems himself to be in. Although we learn that after their big fight during the flashback, the winner would have been to marry their Master's daughter Mizusu(instantly linking it to Akane's jealousy), he rarely ever thinks of her with a sense of longing. We have been following his thoughts day by day and even though he constantly thinks of the fight, the prize was an afterthought to him. Something else had happened to make him flip, at least that is what we start thinking. Mitsuki (a friend of both Akane and Yoshia) loves them both; a thought that Yoshia never understood. She knew both of them from their time at the dojo and it is through her that we realize that there was a gentler side to Akane. A side that Yumi Takigawa saw through as well. Akane loves swordsmanship, and he holds it to a sacred degree. During the inevitable flashback, we see that after Yoshia won the fight, Akane was smiling. Unironically, the man we have seen pillage, rape, and kill was humble. He accepted him loss and respected his rival. That duel was everything he had wanted, which made it all the more devastating when he learned it was tainted. There was a side to Akane, that kept wishing things were different, thinking "if only I didn't take the sword as a souvenir that night". Would they had remained friends? Would Tokyo have had two more samurai to defend it? or Would he be a godfather today? Reliefs that were never granted. This brings us back to the opening scene of the game which might as well have been the only look we will ever be granted to see the deep recesses of Akane's mind. He was being taken advantage of by a woman where he could do nothing but watch on as she played with him.
Yoshia, in turn, grafts in us the image of the straight and arrow, and untainted samurai as we wait for him to stop Akane from the recklessness he brought unto the world, but through the woman he meets, at the end of the story we can't tell which one of them is the crazier one. His is a world robbed of sense. He can't understand how Mitsuki still considers Akane a friend not can he ever hope to understand what caused Akane to change. His world shatters further when he is confronted by Yuki Takigawa's (Akane's woman) loyalty. Even though she found out Akane couldn't care less about her and she was facing death she refused to do the same for him. Yoshia watches as all these people hold Akane dear unable to seen him like he is, and the world keeps making even less sense to him. Yoshia will never understand Akane's insanity. How could he when he didn't back then and nothing has changed now? Akane even asks him "if there is anything he can say that would make him stay his blade". We start seeing Yoshia commit acts not fitting his perceived persona, and their roles are slowly reversing. Yoshia's worst fears were realized, we started sympathizing with Akane. When we arrive at that final fight, there is no script, backdrop, or familiar material we can escape to. Everything further is uncharted territory. We are trapped in the director's clutches and he doesn't allow us to look away.
Hanachirasu's cg artwork is up there with Mahoutsukai no Yoru as some of the best in the medium. There is no part of the game where you need to wish that a cg existed here. It will pop up before you finished forming the thought. CGs that could easily be mistaken for portraits or painting of events long ago giving us a reluctant realization that Hanachirasu is already this world's history. It is such a joy to see these characters move since we seem to take as much pleasure from seeing them move fluidly as they do in fighting. The world of this game is one on the verge of tipping and it is only through the CGs that we see its true face. When a CG is forced to display a character's inner demons we feel that an unveiling is taking place and this is how their world really is. For a short game, Hanachirasu has the same professionalism as a full length visual novel, and we get the sense it had the same production value too. An abundance of CGs, a wealth of music, and characters that will never let you go. It is the music that heightens a scene to its fullest extent, and the composers have the sure-fire confidence to control the scenes and know when to let go. We are made a promise on the main menu, and it is as if the whole game was trying its best to deliver on that and make sure the audience gets their fill. The soundtrack was always talking to us, so was the characters, and sadly so was the narrator.
There are many times the game fumbles on itself flailing in the author's overindulgent attitude. Life-threatening fights were interrupted by lessons and explanations of sword techniques that would've been better placed in the training room. It was almost as if the narrator became a main character with the amount of times he had the ability to pause fights. The tension kept deflating and the author did nothing to stop it. I started hoping one of the characters would become self-aware and cut off the explanations along with the narrator. We want more characters to have screen time, and the world of Tokyo is so rich and full of life that we want to see what people like the carefree Mitsuki, or the Soba restaurant waitress in more scenarios even after the game is done. We want to know what happens to both organizations and if other countries use this as a chance to invade. Less is definitely more here, but the author played his cards a bit too closely to his chest.
I doubt the author had any intention of challenging the conventions of the shounen genre when writing this story, but one can't help but draw comparisons when the genre's themes are so shallowly portrayed that they come off as masterful in a story that feels like it picked them up along the way. Hidden cracks start to give way and nostalgia grows old. I picked up Hanachirasu because it was one of the only two works written by Narahara Ittetsu writer of Full Metal Daemon Muramasa, and because of its short length. Now I wish the author had more works to go through, and naturally Muramasa shot up my priority list. I consider Majikoi to be the story that finally delivered on the power of friendship trope. Hanachirasu is the story that finally delivered on the Fated Rivals cliché. Now we just need a visual novel to finally deliver on the scale of Dragon Ball and One Piece, so they can finally render Shounen manga obsolete.
