2024.05.14 22:57 thatguyfromschool Simple Question - Adding numbers from daily to weekly

Hey guys, I've found answers that are way more complicated systems then what I need and I'm having a little bit of trouble setting it up. I'm not a programmer at all, so sorry for the VERY beginner question.
Basically: I have in my daily notes an information called "Pages Read" which tracks the number of pages I've read that day. How do I create a script that adds up all this pages to the weekly summary and, furthermore, into an monthly summary?
I'm trying to "simplify" examples that I found but it's not working. If anyone can help I'd be super grateful!

2024.05.14 22:57 mutantreptile Turning on/off Home Screen smart invert using Shortcuts?

Found a video that suggests using Smart Invert for the Home Screen to hide the clock in the status bar on my iPhone. I like to switch this on before bed and off when i get up. This works great for me so far.
To be a little more detailed, my manual flow today looks like this: Settings > Accessibility > Per-App Settings > Home Screen > Smart Invert > On
Is there any way I can turn this into a Shortcut so that I can easily automate it?

2024.05.14 22:57 Clear-Mistake-5473 Weekly business Travelers-side hustles

Hey there, I’ve been traveling weekly for about 4yrs now and would like to use all this leisure time a little more wisely. I am in a different city or state every week, sometimes multiple places. I work only a couple hours a day and the rest is just hotel leisure or exploring where I’m at. I need something that is not a set schedule and is obviously something I can do from whatever. The amount of potential profit isn’t of my concern, I’m just trying to brainstorm. And needing upfront funds is not an issue either. Online there’s a ton of social media marketing and drop shipping type hustles but outside of that I’m not finding much. I would love to hear from anyone that could help… especially my fellow business travelers.
Thank you to all who reply

2024.05.14 22:56 Barakvalzer UNRWA and UNHCR refugee definition doesn't make sense.

Both UNRWA (for Palestinian refugees) and UNHCR (Rest of the world) have definitions of what is a refugee
UNRWA definition -
"Palestine refugees are defined as “persons whose normal place of residence was Palestine during the period 1 June 1946 to 15 May 1948, and who lost both home and means of livelihood as a result of the 1948 conflict.”
UNRWA services are available to all those living in its area of operations who meet this definition, who are registered with the Agency and who need assistance. The descendants of Palestine refugee males, including adopted children, are also eligible for registration. When the Agency began operations in 1950, it was responding to the needs of about 750,000 Palestine refugees. Today, some 5.9 million Palestine refugees are eligible for UNRWA services."
UNHCR definition -
"Refugees are people forced to flee their own country and seek safety in another country. They are unable to return to their own country because of feared persecution as a result of who they are, what they believe in or say, or because of armed conflict, violence or serious public disorder.
Many have been forced to flee with little more than the clothes on their back, leaving behind their homes, possessions, jobs and loved ones. They may have suffered human rights violations, been injured in their flight, or seen family members or friends killed or attacked.
Today, there are 35.3 million refugees globally. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is mandated to protect 29.4 million of them. A further 5.9 million are supported by the United Nations Relief and Works AgencyLink is external (UNRWA), which was set up in 1949 to care for displaced Palestinians."
My main contradiction is that UNRWA defines descendants as refugees even if they never set foot in the place they are refugees from, while the UNHCR defines refugees as only the current people who are fleeing their country (not their descendants) as refugees.
Can anyone tell me how those definitions make any sense?

2024.05.14 22:54 boringblobking Can someone with experience training advise the best way to train Llama to be better at the MedMCQA dataset?

I have the goal of training a model to answer these multiple choice questions from the MedMCQA dataset. I tried using QLoRA with Unsloth then adding LoRA parameters and training those. I found training on more than 4000 samples (is this too little?) of the train set of MedMCQA made it perform worse at validation. Then I read that actually LoRA parameters aren't strong enough to teach a model new info which explains why I didn't see much improvement.
Then I thought of fully finetuning but I read elsewhere that it's not ideal to fine-tune to teach new information either and that it can actually lead to more hallucination.
So based on my goal of getting as high a score on the validation set of MedMCQA, how would you suggest I use Llama to do this?

2024.05.14 22:54 PiperAtDawn TTRPGs require effort.

I had someone tell me that ttrpgs requiring effort isn't entirely true. It FUCKING UPSET ME because I've been in the hobby for near TWO DECADES, running as a gm for a little over a DECADE (a relatively short amount of time, but FUCK OFF), and I have never once thought that way. I felt DISMISSED and INVALIDATED.
Before we even get to sit down and begin playing there's dedicated EFFORT spent on getting the group TOGETHER as a TEAM.
First I find the people that are INTERESTED and can coordinate our schedules to sync up and play. NOT A SMALL FUCKING TASK, especially if you're starting a NEW GROUP.
Then I ALWAYS do the optional SESH ZERO with ANYONE I haven't run a game for before. Being SENSITIVE to stuff like domestic violence or sexual assault is IMPORTANT to me as ive seen FIRST HAND how FUCKING HURTFUL it can be to impact someone that way. Explaining safety tools and setting expectations for behavior is key to finding the very simplest of common ground to build a FIRM FUCKING FOUNDATION on.
Then I ask questions about the type of game we want to run/play TOGETHER as a TEAM. Do we want EPISODIC ADVENTURES or something more EPIC IN SCALE lole lotr. Do the players want combat and loot to be the FOCUS or just when narratively FITTING? Is setting IMPORTANT? What about HANDWAIVING resources or survival mechanics? Is there plot armor for our FURRIES? Then I find system that FITS into the style of game we're looking for.
Do I own a module that fits within the groups preferences or do I need to write A NEW MASTERPIECE FROM THE GROUND UP(hours of EFFORT to days of EVEN MORE EFFORT)? Do I need to edit it to fit the group? YES. Do I need to re-edit it day of because someone can't make it? FUCK YOU BUT ALSO YES
Let's say you're JUST A PLAYER though.
You still need to put in EFFORT to sync up a schedule and DEDICATE THE TIME to show up and be present. Are you bringing DELICIOUS snacks or drinks, do you need to TRAVEL? Are you the host because that can be a BUTTLOAD OF WORK before, during, and after the sesh.
Have you or are you going to READ THE RULES? Take NOTES? Do you need roll up your own character or use a premade (DONT LAUGH THATS EFFORT TOO)? Do you need to buy a mini or dice?
On average my players are playing for 2.5 to 4hr sessions which is TIME THEY'RE INVESTING that could be spent doing AYTHING THE FUCK ELSE. As a WORKING ADULT, that supply of freetime only ever seems to get SMALLER AND SMALLER every year.
I want to show my players respect by putting together an EXPERIENCE for them they'll FIND FUN. Each session is a GIFT I carefully CRAFT to varying degrees of success. I want my players to know I VALUE their TIME AND COMMITMENT and I show that by putting in EFFORT into my games.
You are investing EFFORT all along the way of getting together to play...and more often than not SOME amount of $$ too.
I haven't even talked about ACTUALLY PLAYING any system yet but I've already ejaculated... what even is life… just remember that some systems require less effort to run/play...but all systems do require effort...
TL;DR: Do players & GMs need to put in EFFORT to engage the hobby? (THE ANSWER IS YES)

2024.05.14 22:54 Ulfgrimnirr Tempting Target - The Gryllus Prime Desert

Tempting Target - The Gryllus Prime Desert
Strauss found what was once the Auxiliary HQ in Lak'ell Springs shortly after arriving. He set up his own command table inside, bringing what furnishes he could and a healthy amount of pipe weed and tobacco to fit his needs.
He quickly summoned the rest of the command staff, having seen how the situation in the desert was developing now the deadlock that was Lak'ell had been shifted.
He stared into the map, mind racing at possibilities and plans, only being released from his trance as the commanders walked inside.
"Ladies and Gentlemen. The city is secure, but we cannot afford to linger. The Tau are rapidly rendezvousing their forces away from Lak'ell and the villages surrounding it, and seemingly holding up in Hal'Khanek"
Lak'ell is ours, with Weston Point, Ur'Esh and Stinberg being abandoned in order to reinforce Hal'Khanek. What little Ork forces remain are held up at Geshin'lor, Lorkyton and Duslin.
"I believe our best course of action would be to capture Sandstop. This would act as a better forward base to stage our sieges of Hal'Khanek, or even Va'sahn."
"However, their is no road from Lak'ell to Sandstop, or to Stinberg even. Another course of action may be to travel south, taking Weston point, then Lorkyton and then travelling north again. It may even be viable to see off the green bastard for the finale time, from the our desert here at least"
Strauss began to stuff his pipe with Tobacco, signalling he was finished and looking to the other commanders for their comment.

2024.05.14 22:54 Stone_Jack_Baller65 Finally a caught something!

Finally a caught something!
I am very new angler, I’ve made multiple post in here asking for tips and advice for new starters like me. I live in Illinois, close to Lake Shelbyville, I’ve gone fishing 5 times the past month, mostly at the Lake and once at Lake Charleston I have not caught anything until today. I’ve been watching videos, listening to podcasts, trying to learn as much as I can to catch some fish. Today I went to Lake Paradise, much smaller lake than the others, I set up a spot on a side of a bank and I pulled in 5 little crappie (correct me if I’m wrong) like this guy. Lol they aren’t any trophy fish but they really gave me morale boost I needed to keep fishing.

2024.05.14 22:54 milkdromeda Are there any benefits to using Azure if planning to onboard a SaaS into the O365 environment?

I've been working on a SaaS product, still in the prototyping and planning phase. More of an idea at this time but I am taking it seriously. Software dev and Solutions Architect by day but I am and have been working with AWS for years. Most of this is hypothetical but still something interesting to me and I'd like to figure out even if it goes nowhere.
I have my domain and I am in the phase where I am looking to getting my business email set up so i can launch my website. A consideration I have been thinking of is that while both AWS and Azure offer their versions of 'startup hub' to receive credits, and other perks, things like LLC formation through Stripe Atlas (no where near ready for that) - some of these perks require you to have a website, a linkedin, and thus a business email. Traditionally my day jobs have been AWS focused, but internally to the company we've used GSuite. I was wondering if there are any non obvious perks to using the O365 suite to set up my business email when it would come time to begin setting up and integrating with azure infrastructure. Additionally, I know that the majority of the clientele would be using O365 and presumably active directory for managing their identities. Would this allow for easier onboarding down the road? I understand AWS has active directory service as well, but just curious at the implications from an Azure standpoint. All new to me so just wanted to do a little research.

2024.05.14 22:53 uninvitedthirteenth Travel Diary: Amsterdam, May 2-May 8

Travel Diary: I make $195,000 and spent $2149.75 (+49k points) while on a trip to Amsterdam
Section One: Bio
Age: 40
Occupation: Lawyer
Hometown: DC
Number of PTO days and how you accrue them: I earn 6 hours of annual leave every two weeks (19 days total a year), and used 36 hours for this trip
Section Two: Assets + Debt
Not super comfortable with a very detailed financial picture, but my NW is ~$750k. No SO.
Section Three: Income
Main Job Monthly Take Home: After all deductions and contributions to savings, my monthly take home is ~$6200
Section Four: Travel Expenses/Diary
Trip planning - My (40F) best friend from college (39F) and I decide to go to Amsterdam on a birthday trip. We both turn 40 in 2024, and we decide to go in May because it's in between our birthdays and because it'll be tulip season in Amsterdam! Neither of us have been. We also haven't travelled together before, despite being friends for 20(!) years, so we are a little apprehensive, although we have spent a lot of time together over the past few years. We decide on a 6 day trip. For purposes of this diary I'm going to list my half of the expenses for things we split. Costs are in US dollars, despite paying using Euros. As a side note, I also am a little over one year post-Gastric Bypass, which has a limited effect on my diet (I try to eat low carb, but you'll see that I mostly fail at this on this trip!).
Pre-trip expenses: $1193.15 total
Flight: $255 + 49k points (from Capital One)
Lodging: $1425.91 (split) - $713
Rijksmuseum: $40.28
Anne Frank House: $24.95
Keukenhof Gardens plus bus ticket: $36.20
Red Light District Tour: $50.52
Day trip to windmills tour: $43.20
Snacks: $30ish
Day 1 (Total $21.17)
Our flight is at 5:30pm, so we planned to be at the airport by 3:30pm, which actually turned out to be 4pm. Uber ($21.17). After checking bags (included in flight price) and getting through security we made it to our gate right as boarding was about to start. No time for food or drinks.
On the plane I eat a snack of roasted chickpeas before dinner, which was chicken cacciatore with mashed potatoes, bread, cheesecake, cheese, and a salad. And two glasses of wine. I save the cheesecake and cheese for later.
My friend and I watch a movie (Poor Things) and then try to sleep. I am reading A Fault In Our Stars, because Amsterdam. I try unsuccessfully to sleep for awhile and then go back to reading. At some point i eat the cheese and cheesecake. Breakfast is a cheese roll, which i eat a couple bites of (OMG does all of Amsterdam have this much cheese?? - spoiler alert… yes it does!). I wish I had slept more.
Day 2 - Even though it feels like a continuation of day one. (Total $207.02)
7am - We land at 7 and then grab the bags and go through customs. Easy peasy. We are exhausted so we grab coffee at the airport before figuring out public transit ($5.10). I take out 60 euro for cash in case we need it ($65). We buy a train ticket to the central station ($6.33) and when we get there we buy a four day unlimited public transit pass ($28.44) so that we don’t have to worry about it later.
We get to the hotel at around 9am. They tell us it will cost $50 to check in early, which we opt not to do. Instead we go get breakfast and coffee at a cafe nearby ($21.20). The hotel tells us that our prepaid amount did not include city taxes, which is another $183 (my half $91.88).
11:30am - Back at the room we decide to rest for 90 minutes. Enough to catch up on sleep but not to waste the day and get more jet-lagged. After a rest we decide to walk around and get a feel for the neighborhood and do some shopping. We find a bookstore, and I buy a copy of my favorite book from high school, Tess of the D’Ubervilles with a beautiful cover and gold edges ($21.46). We also buy fries with truffle, mayo, and Parmesan at a fry shop ($3.32) (that’s all they have and they are delicious!). We also stop a grocery store and pick up a few things including yogurt, cheese, salami, apples, and an energy drink ($13.19). We have some early days planned and nothing seems to open early. It’s very cold and rainy and semi unpleasant.
6pm - We drop stuff off, bundle up, and head off to dinner and a tour of the red light district. We try to find a place that serves Snert, a Dutch pea soup, but strike out. We end up at an Asian place instead. I get chicken satay and a beer and my friend gets Indonesian soup and wine ($16.10). Our red light tour is great, but we are exhausted after and head straight home to bed. 22k steps total
Day 3 (Total $87.24)
7:30am - We have an early day planned, and have to be on a bus near the central station by 8am. I eat a yogurt and energy drink (from grocery store) for breakfast and we take public transit (covered on unlimited card) to the station. We find the right bus and head off!
First stop is the windmills, which are beautiful! I am happy we get there early because we basically have the place to ourselves. My friend gets a coffee and we both use the restroom ($1.08!). Then we head to Edam and do a walking tour there. Next stop is a clog/cheese place, which feels very touristy but they do feed us lots of cheese. I buy a cheese slicer as a souvenir ($10.81). Next stop is another small town where we have lunch at a cafe. We basically pick one at random. My friend gets fried fish and I get a ham and cheese panini and a beer ($17.30). Final stop is an artificial island town called Maarken. We do another walking tour.
2:30pm - we arrive back in Amsterdam and get let off north of the water. I grab a coffee ($3.76). We go up to the Adam lookout and take a ride on the swing off the side of the building ($25.95 for swing plus ticket to lookout). We also grab a drink and sit on a pillow watching the city from very high up, which is lovely ($6.63). On the way out I buy a reusable water bottle at the gift shop ($4.87).
After the lookout we take the tram over to a brewery at a windmill that was recommended to us by several people (including here on Reddit!). Cost was covered by the transit pass. We buy bitterballen and a small bottle of Genever (local whiskey) (paid by my friend) and a flight of beer ($16.84). We are a bit tipsy but enjoying the lovely weather.
6:30 - On the way back toward the hotel the weather turns and it starts raining so we dip into a pub for dinner. I have a burger ($16.12). We are there at 8pm, which is momentous because it’s a day of remembrance and the whole bar is silent for two minutes. It was very interesting to be there during this time.
We are exhausted by this point and go home to bed. 19k steps total for the day.
Day 4 (Total $104.33)
7am - Another early day as we have to be on a bus at 7:30 to go to Keukenhof for the tulips! (paid in advance). We wanted to take the first bus out there because we heard the crowds were bad. I eat a yogurt for breakfast and take a 5 hour energy (no cafes open this early!). We try to take public transit to the train station but didn’t realize that the trains do not run that early on a Sunday so we grab an Uber instead ($12.20). We tell the Uber driver we’re trying to catch a bus so he makes sure we find the right place and we pull up just as the bus is loading. Phew!
8:00am - we spend 5 hours in the gardens and take literally hundreds of pictures. We are glad that we get there early as the first few hours are lovely and empty. We get a coffee ($4.60) and lunch later ($25.36). By 1pm it’s getting very crowded so we start heading out. We grab the bus back to the train station.
2:30pm - We decide to go by the Rijksmuseum although not in it because we planning that later. Instead we stop off at the Van Gogh/Rijks gift shop that’s nearby. I get a couple souvenirs, including a foldable bag and a magnet ($20.44). I also get a coffee ($3.64) and my friend gets bubble tea. We sit on the hill on museumplein and people watch. After awhile it starts to get hot (we had dressed for the early morning) so we head back to the hotel to change.
5pm - we decide we are having an evening of drinking. We first grab a drink in the hotel bar because we get free vouchers for each day we choose not to have the room cleaned. Then we have dinner at an udon place, which is delicious. We have tempura, chicken katsu, and dumplings ($15.94). Then because it’s cinco de mayo we decide to have margaritas at the Mexican place near the hotel ($15.15)! Not Dutch but it’s fun. We head down the street to another bar and have a Genever cocktail called an Amsterdam mule ($9.91). I am happy with our choice of hotel because there are so many places in our neighborhood. On the way home we pass a fresh stroopwaffle place and must get in line for one ($5.92).
By then we are exhausted and head to bed. 21k steps total for the day.
Day 5 (Total $80.44)
8am - We have a slightly less early day but have tickets to the Anne Frank house at 9:15. (paid in advance). I eat some yogurt and cheese in the room before we leave. It’s walkable so we decide to head out early and grab coffee on the way. ($3.19). The house is sombering but I’m glad we did it.
11am - After the Anne Frank house we walk to the nearby cheese museum. We sample lots of cheese. I buy one cheese to take home ($15.18). We want to walk to a used bookstore, but decide to have lunch at a cafe on the way. We pick one at random. We split chicken tenders and a goat cheese and apple sandwich and I have a beer. ($15.14). The sandwich is one of the best things we have eaten. We spend about an hour in the bookstore and my friend buys one book.
3pm - We realize we are by the monkey bar (one of the oldest bars in Amsterdam that they told us about on our red light district tour). We stop in for a drink. Ok two drinks. ($12.50). We take the metro back towards the hotel and stop in at a tile store in our neighborhood so I can buy a magnet. I buy magnets from all my trips, but I like non-touristy handmade ones if I can find them, Van Gogh magnet from yesterday aside. I buy one with a windmill on it. ($14). We also stop at the grocery store for more yogurt ($3.05) and for Dutch apple pie at the cafe across the street from the hotel ($4). We get back to the hotel and have another free drink and then rest before dinner.
8pm - We go out to a Dutch restaurant for dinner. I am not super hungry from pie so I just get the snert (pea soup). My friend gets sauerkraut and potatoes. Sorry, but I thought it was pretty bland food in general. ($13.38).
We head home. It’s a lighter day, only 14k steps today.
Day 6 (Total $194.47)
8am - Today is our last full day in Amsterdam. We have planned to spend the day at the Rijksmuseum. We want to get there right when it opens for crowd reasons. We had bought “friend of the museum” passes ahead of time so that we can skip the line. I have a yogurt for breakfast and we walk to a cafe near the museum for coffee and breakfast for my friend ($3.78). The man at the cafe is very nice and we love sitting outside in the sunshine. It’s going to be a warm day!
We spend about 5 hours at the museum. We rush to see the Van goghs and the main gallery where the Rembrandts are, including The Night Watch, which is probably one of the most famous paintings in there. We had downloaded the app so we shared a pair of earbuds and listened to audio notes about many of the works (they have a number you can enter in). We take a break outside for coffee ($7.29 - i pay) and skip the line again. Totally worth it for the more expensive ticket. Around 2 we are hungry and have seen almost everything. We stop in the gift shop and I buy a ring and earring set. ($64.76). I forget to use my 10% discount for being a friend. :( I wanted a necklace too but didn’t like the ones they had there so I’ll try to find a matching piece at home.
2pm - My friend has been trying to get herring for the whole trip so we make it a point to do that. The first place is a bust so we find a little stand that sells it a 15 min walk away. We are determined, so we head there. I don’t eat fish so I get a shawarma on the way, which is terrible (cash). I throw half away. After lunch we get ice cream. I get coffee ice cream, and it makes up for the bad shawarma ($6). We also stop at the peanut butter store, which is allegedly the first in the world, and I pick up 3 small jars for my mom for Mother’s Day ($8.11). We also stop at a thrift store and i buy a dress ($21.59). At some point this day (I think), we also stop at another bookstore, and I buy a few things including a card, a couple gifts, and a book ($39.71).
6pm - After resting a bit, we get two more free drinks at the hotel and then head out to dinner. We pick another Asian place. I get an aperol spritz at dinner and we share appetizers (satay, spring rolls, and bitterballen). We also get coconut ice cream with mango sauce for dessert. All yum! ($33.03).
We get one final drink at a local bar near the hotel ($10.20) and I’m again grateful for our choice of neighborhood. Today has been all walking because our 4-day metro pass ran out yesterday. Total steps 13k.
Day 7 (Total $36.93)
8am - this our last day. The plane was supposed to leave at 1:30pm, but we get a message that it’s delayed an hour. We decide to have a leisurely breakfast. We pick a place that’s at a hotel near our hotel. I get an egg sandwich and my friend gets French toast. We both get coffee. ($15.27)
We decide to leave for the airport around 11. We walk to the central station about 20 min away, and I buy wooden tulips for my mom on the way (cash). We buy train tickets (cash) and get right on a train. We are proud of ourselves for our navigation on this trip.
12pm - we get to the airport and through security. We head to a lounge but there’s a line. We are 40th in line based on our QR code place. We decide not to wait and sit down for lunch at a random bar. I get a sausage and a beer ($20.66). We walk around some and get another message that our flight is delayed more, to 4pm. It’s finally our turn to get into the lounge at 2:30 (2 1/2 hour wait) so we go. I grab some water and a whiskey and coke but we just ate so we are not hungry. Around 3 we head to the gate. Unfortunately when we get there our flight is delayed more and will board at 4. They give us airport vouchers so we buy a book, beer, and some stroopwaffles ($1 after vouchers). We finally board and head off around 5.
On the flight we are served dinner. They have run out of chicken by the time they get to me, but eventually find one and bring it to me later. I have a wine too. I read, watch a movie, and try to sleep a little. We have a whole row of four to ourselves so we can spread out. Dinner is a French bread pizza.
8pm - We land around 7pm (love time zone math!), grab our bags, and get a taxi to my car ($27.09). I drop off my friend and get home at 8:30. I am exhausted but cuddle my cats for about an hour before going to bed. 15k steps today
After trip expenses - $225 cat sitting
Total expenses: $2149.75 (+49k points)
Flight: $255 + 49k points
Lodging: $804.88
Food/drinks: $531.38
Travel: $101.56
Activities: $221.10
Souvenirs/gifts: $ 231.93
Final parting thoughts - I think just over $2k for an almost-week long trip to Europe is a pretty comfortable number for me. I am glad I could use points for most of the flight. We definitely didn't try to cheap out on anything. We spent a lot of money drinking (neither of us drink this much usually). I hope this was helpful to anyone, and I look forward to reactions/comments!

2024.05.14 22:53 Antique-Counter-3712 My strange wife pt.2

As I walked through the woods I noticed that it was quiet, a little too quiet.
"Hmm," I hummed to myself as I stopped to take a look around only to see nothing but snow and trees surrounding me.
'Well that's odd,' I thought, 'usually by now I would have seen a deer or two.'
"I wonder if there is a bear in the area," I said out loud.
"In the middle of winter," called out a feminine voice from a few feet away from behind a tree, "what are you stupid?"
"Not as stupid as you for giving yourself away like that," I called back as I walked over, "and for your information it's spring not winter."
"Oh yeah, why is there snow on the ground then," the feminine voice shot sarcastically, "and don't tell me it because it only snow during this time of year."
"Of course not," I replied with a roll of my eyes as I rounded the tree to see a young woman covered by shadows lying up against the tree holding her shoulder, "we on a mountain dimwit."
"Oh," she started to say only to stop when she looked up at me, with her mouth wide open.
"What," I asked after she continued staring at me for a whole minute, "did a lightning-spider bite your tongue?"
"Damn, I didn't expect you to be a midget," she answered before passing out.
With a roll of my eyes, I took a step closer while bringing my hand closer to her mouth to make sure she breathing.
"Well at least you're still alive," I said with a sigh of relief before reaching for my bag to pull out some cloth.
"let's get some light in this place," I said to myself as I looked around for a big enough stick which didn't take long to find and soon I was making a torch.
"There we go," I said as I put the torch on the ground to reach for some flint some my bag.
Calmly I took the flint and stack it against a stone to cause sparks that set the torch a blaze.
"Now let's get a clearer look at you," I said as I held up the torch I'm the air to reveal that she wasn't covered by shadow but instead was wearing strange clothing that covered everything but her head, feet, and hands.
She also had blood covering her left hand so I removed it from her shoulder to see a hole there that on closer examination I saw went all the way through.
"Okay," I said with a sigh as I pulled more cloth out of my bag and started wrapping around her shoulder.
Once I finished I picked her up and put her around my shoulder.
"Okay let's get you out of here," I said as I started to walk away only to when I remembered one the words she said earlier.
"Wait, what in seven days are midgets?"

2024.05.14 22:53 ChessieChesapeake Glasses for computer use

OK folks, I am somewhat new to glasses and could use some help. For the past two years I have had a pair of readers with the following prescription:
OD: Sphere = +1.50, Cylinder = -0.75, Axis = 105 OS: Sphere = +1.50, Cylinder = -0.50, Axis = 088
These readers have worked very well for both reading and computer use and I really haven't had any complaints, but they have been banged up pretty good, so it was time to update my prescription and get a new pair. I also have pretty good distance vision, but was getting tired of constantly taking my glasses on and off when I'm out and about, so I wanted to move to a pair I can use full time.
So I recently got my eyes checked and updated prescriptions for readers and full time wear.
For the readers: OD: Sphere = +2.75, Cylinder = -1.25, Axis = 105 OS: Sphere = +2.50, Cylinder = -0.75, Axis = 085
For full time wear: OD: Sphere = +0.75, Cylinder = -1.25, Axis = 105, Near Add = +2.00 OS: Sphere = +0.50, Cylinder = -0.75, Axis = 085, Near Add = +2.00
I ordered a pair of glasses with progressive lenses and have been wearing them for about two weeks. I don't have any complaints and they are great for when I am out and about, as I can read things close up and have a little more clarity for distance. My problem is computer use, as I sit in front of the computer for about 8-12 hours a day and the progressives are not that great for sitting at my desk and looking at multiple displays, so I have reverted to using my old glasses when at my desk.
Here is what I am trying to figure out. I ordered a new pair of glasses online, using the new prescription for readers, and just got them today. When I am reading a book, or 20 inches or closer to my computer displays, they are great, but when I sit my standard distance of around 30-35 inches from the displays, they are too blurry. I do not have this issue with my old pair and 30 inches of distance seems to be the sweet spot.
So my question is, what adjustments would I need to make to my new prescription for them to work well for computer use? Is it the Sphere settings I need to adjust to get a little more distance out of them?

2024.05.14 22:51 Exact_End1388 will my ex come back?

im gonna go into full explicit detail about everything that happened from a-z. and i want opinions
i met this guy at a social event and we clicked instantly (as friends because i had another bf at the time and hes gonna become relevant in the story). lets just call the guy at the event john and lets call my ex alex. me and alex broke up about 3 days after i met john and i started to develop feelings for john. me and alex ended up trying to “talk things out” even tho i was just attached and wanted the attachment to wear off. so we were “talking” but we werent exclusive and had no boundaries and i knew i was eventually going to cut alex off because i didnt see a future with him, i just was attached because we had memories and he was my first ever boyfriend
me and john liked each other, on october 7th we kissed. and about 4 days later i met up with alex and “hooked up” which i later found out he sexually assaulted me
i was avoiding john because the entire situation was hard on me and i was tired of having to choose because i was the first girl john ever liked and i felt bad about kissing him and i DIDNT want a relationship (at the time) slowly, john blocked me because he had enough and thats when i realized i didnt want alex anymore. i cut alex off for john. john asked me if i met up with alex after me and him kissed and i said no because my god forsaken self fucking forgot, as much as it sounds like an excuse, its not. i had no memory of seeing alex after me and john kissed. and so me and john started to become exclusive after we met up and talked things out. i told him i didnt see alex after me and john kissed.
we dated and we were so happy until we broke up for a few days because he wasnt ready for a relationship, we got back together and we were happy.
theres the part where i start to fuck up. and i wont deny a single thing i did
theres a guy named eric, or at least we will call him that. i used to “like” eric, not even like i just thought he was cute. nothing too deep. im friends with his girlfriend and she trusts me enough because she knows i feel nothing for him, but she trusts me to come to me whenever they have issues in the relationship because she KNOWS its nothing like that
theres another guy named timmy, timmy and eric go to the same school so theyre in the same class. timmy is spreading shit rumors about me and its no fucking rumor anyone could ignore. it was a rumor where i had a “sex tape”, have 3 bodies, and had sex with john even tho non of it is fucking true. it was getting so bad my friends were getting dms saying “your little friend had sex with her boyfriend and i have proof”. it was so fucking bad. not to mention, im a minor and i live in a small fucking country shit gets spread so fast here. and so i would go to eric as ask him about timmy because i was gonna take legal action against timmy because it was going so fucking far. and john didnt like that. because he knew i used to “like” eric. which i fucking didnt and i just thought the dude was good looking lol
and so i would only speak to eric to ask about timmy and i would let john know about. except this one god forsaken time where i didnt show a fucking continuation of a conversation and he got so mad he started threatening to break up with me
keep in mind, im an anxious attachment and im pretty sure john is avoidant even tho in the relationship he was surely an anxious so i dont know cause we havent spoken in a fucking month lmao
we both are borderline by the way.
so this is a part where i fuck up
the reason why i use the name eric is because eric is like someone who associates himself with eric cartmen from south park, he makes him his entire personality and its just a joke between him and everyone 😭 as immature as it sounds, i dressed up as eric cartmen for characters day in school and i showed eric the outfit because i thought it was funny and didnt think anything of it. i didnt show john but i didnt hide it from him either because i know john would go through my phone and i didnt see anything wrong with what i did, until he went through my phone and saw the chat, keep in mind, i do delete chats with my friends sometimes because i dont want john to see some things because of privacy, not out relationship, but between me and a specific few girls he doesnt like and doesnt want me to be friends with
and so he saw the message and got upset, and i took the hint that this guy just doesnt want me to interact w eric at all and i understood but i understood him way too fucking late and he broke up with me
which for some reason my dumbass was shocked even tho he made it clear that he didnt want me speaking to john so this is where i realized i fucked up
i took it as a lesson and learned to not do it again but i was too late
me and john break up and i wanted him back badly. an hour after the breakup i started posting on my story about a random guy that i made up and acted like i liked him to piss off john and make him jealous which was a bad fucking idea
to me, the more someone doesnt want me, the more i want them. thats how i thought it was
and he found out and got pissed off. he ended up texting alex and found out i met up with alex after me and john kissed. but no one was aware that i was actually sexually assaulted by alex and i found out later because my friend went through the same thing. me and john stayed talking to see if we could work it out and i fucked up by telling him to stop basing our relationship over something from the past that happened over 8 months ago. he got pissed and blocked me
i later found out he followed back the girl he told me not worry about and said he didnt know why he was attracted to her but at same time would say “i dont know if shes actually pretty or if im trying to move on” (as in move on from me) i got so fucking pissed, i texted the girl w my friend we and told her that john was using her and a rebound. john found out, threatened to ruin my life and was so fucking mad over it, but i later then realized he just thought she was pretty and didnt want her like that. i ended up apologizing to john because i wanted him back but it didnt work because he was standing on business lmfao
during this time, my friend told me he would always consider going back to me and missed me and loved me so much. and john did love me. a LOT. he bought me flowers, a ring, everything. like he did everything for me and he did love me so deeply
and now we havent spoken over a month and its slowly killing me because my friend who was close with him said he was dead set with his decision n doesnt wanna get back with me. i dont know if this will change because right now he has new priorities like studies since hes graduating soon. but right now, he seems dead set with his decision even tho his biggest fear was losing me. i saw the way he would talk about me and we were so deeply in love.
but john thinks i cheated on him with what happened with alex. my friend told him he sexually assaulted me but it was very vague and he doesnt know the details.
i was johns first love. first EVERYTHING. we broke up march 18 and last spoke april 19 where he thought i was shit talking him and i proved i wasnt. he later said he was worried about me but right now he doesnt seem to care.
please dont tell me to “let him go”. if u have any other opinions on what u think will happen and if he will come back please let know because i really want him back. my family friend who is a psychic told me he was coming back if this helps lol.
let me know if u guys think hes coming back. this is all fresh but yea.

2024.05.14 22:51 Scary-Bee5087 Question about sets

I was talking to my best friend who also hits the gym and I realised we workout differently so I wanted to know what is more common and when influencers post workouts which do they mean? I do let's say if I am gonna do 3 exercises for 3 sets I do all 3 exercises with little to no break in between and then rest 3 mins and repeat that 3 times He does the first exercise once rests for 3 minutes does that 2 more times and then moves on to the next exercise Do Influencers mean his way when they post a workout I am not a beginner but this has confused me

2024.05.14 22:51 itredd__ Am I being unreasonable about my boyfriend’s close female friend from work (who is married) or is this actually inappropriate?

I’ll try to keep a long story short as much as possible while still providing the most relevant details. I’m a 29/F and have been involved with my boyfriend 30/M for two years.
Basically my boyfriend who I recently moved in with has had this female friend from work since before we met. Let’s call her Ren 29/F. My bf helped Ren & her husband with their wedding, attended and everything, & since they’re all around the same age / have similar interests, Ren would invite him to their group outings (music festivals, dinners, etc.) with all their other coupled friends.
My bf (before we started dating) was the single guy of the group at the time. Ren’s husband didn’t like my bf because he felt threatened by him or whatever and in turn, got the other males in this friend group to have the same, we’ll call it hesitancies, about him so my boyfriend expressed to me he always felt like the outsider of the group.
Ren & my boyfriend would also hang out just one on one every couple months or so (in addition to seeing each other at work almost every day). While my boyfriend and I were in the “talking stage”, he’d share a lot about how he would talk to her about me and that she was excited to meet me, etc.
When I met her, I’ll be honest, nice girl but I didn’t get the most genuine vibes… i’ll just leave it at that. Even then, I tried to give the benefit of the doubt as I didn’t have any other reason to be suspicious.
Anyway. My boyfriend & I started officially dating & were doing the long distance thing for about six months before I moved out to the state where they all live. He would freely share a lot about their conversations and hang outs (between him and Ren), which I appreciated he did on his own as I hadn’t expressed any concerns at that point.
I’ll bullet point what were the “final” three straws for me before I felt I had to say something, as this is already getting way longer than I was hoping and don’t want to dilute the main concerns lol
  1. While Ren & my bf were talking about me moving out there, she said “snarkily & playfully” (his words) that “she better not take my best friend”….. in reference to me… his girlfriend moving in from out of state to be with him. this was the moment everything switched in my mind as I thought it was majorly inappropriate and not something I would ever say to any of my guy friends with girlfriends even as immature as I’ve been in the past, let alone the fact that this is coming from a MARRIED woman, but I still didn’t say anything as I didn’t want to make an issue out of nothing since I do trust him. Also didn’t want him to stop telling me things..
*Even if I felt that way in some past past friendships, that’s something that I always had enough respect for my male friend’s relationships to leave in a thought bubble. As a single person but especially as a married person. The fact that she felt comfortable enough to say something like that really irks me.
  1. A couple months after #1, I was having a little insecure moment about my aging appearance & he was telling me how lucky I am to have good genes & don’t need botox etc., that Ren has a lot of wrinkling on her face that she gets botox for. I think he may have felt bad about commenting “negatively” on a woman’s appearance so he said something right after like “but she’s still very pretty… i’m treading lightly here” etc. I didn’t appreciate this comment at all. Individually I might not have read too much into it but considering #1 & now #3.
  2. I’ve lived out here for a month now and we’ve been busy settling in, and so haven’t really hung out with any of his friends yet (even outside of this group). I decided to travel out of state for a weekend to spend mother’s day with family. What a coincidence… Ren’s husband also happens to be traveling out of state, and so since they’re both going to be alone with the dogs all weekend, they were talking about getting together to do something with the dogs. I clearly wasn’t thrilled about it when he told me, so he said nothing was set in stone and it might not even happen. I said well maybe you guys can meet at the dog park down the street lol
While I’m out of state, my bf tells me that “oh we might end up going to a dog friendly brewery”. And this is where I couldn’t take it anymore and had to say something.
I’ll admit, I didn’t confront the situation in the best way possible but I was already day drinking with family when he told me & I felt I had to say something before he went through with meeting up with her.
He was defensive when I brought up my concerns. I only brought up #1 & #3. His reaction made me very sad to the point I reacted to his reaction poorly, but I clarified it wasn’t that I thought he was cheating… it’s that his reaction to my concerns wasn’t what I was expecting. He pretty much ended the conversation promptly to go take a shower. I realize he may have just needed time to think but overall the defensiveness just made me feel like my concerns were even more validated.
He said after taking time to process, he could see where I was coming from and didn’t want to jeopardize what we have, etc. I thought everything was OK but then I get home from my trip, he’s acting unusual.. we ended up talking about it again and he once again was going back to me making something out of nothing basically. When we brought up how the brewery was the moment I felt I had to say something, he said how that’s not a big deal, that brewery tours was kind of “their thing” they would do since they both moved here from out of state….. I said “well that’s interesting because I pretty much had to beg you to go to a brewery with me here and you wanted to leave so quickly once we were there. But i’d hate to ruin your guy’s thing if it’s really that important to you.”
I felt weird asking him not to hang out with her one on one, that I could put my feelings aside and be cordial with her in group settings. It’s not like we talked much the day I met her or that she made any real effort to get to know me.
Sober, I was able to better articulate my feelings in a less emotionally charged way and we talked it all through, had a delightful rest of the night, and now everything’s ok. But honestly that comment he made about the brewery tours being their thing is still sticking with me and all the things considered, I wonder if I’m overreacting or how ya’ll would feel in my shoes?
Sorry for the typos I’m tired of typing. Thanks if you read all the way through or even if just skimmed. Thoughts are appreciated.
TL;DR; : This is a sample summary of the TLDR rule, all things are bold. Is this going the right way?

2024.05.14 22:49 MonsterJ628 How Does One Use a Pre-Trained Voice Model Using So-Vits-Svc-Fork 4.2.3 Singing Voice Conversion Algorithm?

I am looking to start a few "'AI' voice cover" projects utilizing the so-vits-svc-fork program I had installed from Github. I have the program up and running through Anaconda as Python is the language this program uses. There are torturials on how to build and train your own voice data sets using the program. Where my problem comes in is that I have a pretrained voice model downloaded that I want to use, but simply selecting the model plus the vocals I want the program to convert will only spit back out an error multiple times before giving up. Here's a screenshot of the prompt: so-vits-svc-fork prompt displaying errors after failed execution
I suspect that I lack the "config.json" file for this to work. Do I need to retrain this model to obtain the .json file or does the file already exist as something that could be universally used and located somewhere I am missing. Unfortunately, the directions found on Github aren't exactly "user-friendly". I also have a screenshot of the GUI that I am working with; you can see the files that I am trying to use but I am lacking the "config path": Latest version of the so-vits-svc-fork GUI
the link to the Github that includes the directions: https://github.com/voicepaw/so-vits-svc-fork
I really am clueless how little to how big of a problem I have run into. Any pointers are much appericated because I would hate to abandon this program so soon! Thank you!

~ General Recommendations (All Consoles) For Anyone Who Can't Decide ~

First off, I won't recommend big or famous games like Final Fantasy or Persona, this is more for lesser know, hidden gems, or just games where it's hard to find someone talking about them.

[Valkyria Chronicles]

[Valkyria Chronicles 4]

This one is really hard to explain through words alone, but just in case, the VC series is a World War 2 military setting story, where you act as the lead of a squad and take mission to drive back the enemy. The story is drama heavy and the gameplay is tactical turn-based, but it's mixed with real-time third person shooter.
You can also make your own army by recruiting different types of solders, training them and upgrading their gear. From rifles to tanks, this is a game you have to experience to understand.

[Fuga: Melodies of Steel 1 & 2]

Great game, great art style, and really well made and balanced turn-based combat. That alone is enough to get the game. Then you add the time-management part of the game, where you spend time upgrading the different tank rooms, cooking, exploring ruins, spending time to bond with other characters, and so on. It's also great if you want a game that you can play for an hour or 2 and then put down for later. As the game is played through stages, and once you're done with a stage, you get an intermission to do what you want and come back to it later.
It's not a long game (compared to the usual JRPG), as you mentioned, it's about 20 hours. Story-wise I think it was a bit too short. Gameplay wise it was great fit, because it didn't outstay it's welcome, and it ends when you feel you have mastered the gameplay and want to face the final challenge.
The story is good, but isn't the focus. Gameplay is the main focus. In fact you'll feel that a lot of context isn't told in the story, but instead left for you to either read about in the in-game wiki or just figure out through obvious clues in the story.
There is a big mechanic that this meant to put a lot of pressure on your playthrough (don't worry about it being spoiled because it's literally explained in the first hour of the game). The thing is though, if you have experience in JRPGs or just play in a really well thought out and relaxed manner, then that mechanic might not be as big a deal as they make it seem to be. Yet it's still fun nonetheless.
Fuga 2 is even better. It fixes a lot of the minor issues the first game had, and what's really great, is it improved the "big pressure" mechanic I talked about, and now it actually is a big deal. Then add to that so much little new mechanics added that just makes for a much more fun and challenging game. The 2nd game also continues the same story.

[Ni no Kuni] Series

If you're looking for that great Isekai fantasy adventure feel, then these two games are where it's at. Fantastic visuals and great music, coupled with a great art style, a combo that is perfect for a chill and relaxed gaming experience. Especially when talking about the first game, with the help ofStudio Ghibli, they managed to make a truly whimsical world with that Studio Ghibli classic touch.
- Important Note: The games aren't connected story-wise, so you can start with any of them -

[Wrath of the White Witch]

For a the best fantasy adventure feel, while the combat is a hit or miss depending on your taste, don't let that stop you from actually diving into a true fairy tale world, this is the one with the better story in my opinion, so if you want more story than game, this is for you. Still it has a good share of gameplay, from raising and collecting Pokemon-like monsters, to learning and using different spells, not just in combat but for the overworld too.

[Ni no Kuni™ II: Revenant Kingdom]

This one focuses more on gameplay, with a Kingdom builder, Army battles, Heavy loot focus, and even character collector, this is the one to go with if you want more game than story. Still has the great music and he fantastical art style and setting. Add to that a lot of side activities like beating rare monsters, collecting cute creatures to help you in battle, and even going around the world to gather people to help you build your kingdom. You'll never be short on things to do.
Finally, both of them have beautifully draw world that is just a pleasure to walkthrough, made even better with the amazing orchestral soundtrack.

[Star Ocean The Second Story R]

The original PS1 game was already an amazing JRPG and a classic. But this remake takes it to go even further beyond SSJ3. It should be the standard on how to make a faithful remake on of a classic title.
I don't want to overhype it more than I already did. So to keep this short, this remake does so much:
  • All major story events are now fully voice acted. This includes a lot of the private actions too.
  • Fully redone and better translation of the game.
  • New Character to recruit to the party.
  • New Private Actions and 13 new Endings.
  • New character portraits, not just for the main cast, but also for many other characters.
  • A complete rework for the battle system to be up to modern standards.
  • So many QoL features:
    • Auto-saving
    • Fast-forward cut-scenes or skip them.
    • Text log
    • All difficulties can be accessed from the start
    • Fast travel
    • 3 different voice dubbing options to choose from (New English, Original Japanese, New Japanese)
    • Your choice of different art styles
    • Choose between original OST and new rearranged OST.
    • No random battles anymore, as enemies can be seen and avoided
And believe me when I say I still haven't touched half of the amazing work that has gone into this remake.

[Sword and Fairy 7: Together Forever]

They did a great job with the presentation of the game. Great voice acting (Chinese), great graphics, amazing music, and an impressive attention to details of the world and it's lore, especially the engineering of the buildings and their decor. Then you have the really beautiful design of each piece of gear, and even just normal attire of each NPC and the disciples of each sect or soldiers of each of the different of each plane (gods, humans, demons).
Then we go to how great looking the monsters and local flora and fauna of each realm. You can feel the intense work that has gone into making and animating each of them. It really is a joy to watch them, as much as it is to watch each environment you see them in. There really isn't enough time to talk about how good the presentation is.
As for the story. First off, I am not an expert in Chinese novels mythology, but I am a big fan of Xianxia and Wuxia novels. So when I say that the story is...good but nothing great, I am saying this as more than just a JRPG fan, but also someone who is very into this type of world and Chinese martial arts fantasy setting. it's nothing that will stick in your mind, apart from the events that take place in some of the beautiful set pieces in the game, or the cut-scenes with beautiful action cheoragphy.
The gameplay is also about average. The side-quests are fun and are worth doing if nothing more than for learning more about the lore and the world. But the actual battles and action gameplay isn't as good as the best ones out there, but it's not bad. I have ran into some bugs, some small, some big, but that was when the game just came out, and it did receive a lot of patches since then. You can tell that they aimed to make a huge triple A production, but didn't have the time or manpower to test a game of this size. It's still fun to play and experience, but the level of gameplay is nowhere near the level of the presentation that the game gives the impression of having just from watching the gameplay or trailers.
If you enjoy walking through magical and fantastic looking JRPG worlds, or if you enjoy Xianxia/Wuxia fiction, then this is an easy choice. Hell even if you don't, it's still worth a go at this price.

[Blue Dragon] & [Lost Odyssey]

These two are classic titles that will probably won't be ported to or remade to modern consoles. That's why this might be the last way you'll ever get to experience 2 classic titles of the genre. Lost Odyssey has great story writing and unique character settings, and Blue Dragon has great exploration and a really fun character class customization system, and one hell of a boss theme.

[Monster Sanctuary]

This is a solid game, everything in is polished and balanced to make sure you are having fun collecting new monsters and customizing your team through evolution/skill trees/gear and making the best in-sync party you can. I only wish it was longer, it's not short by any means, but it's not long either. I would say depending on if you're trying to "catch them all" and explore everything and fight all bosses, this could easily be a 30+ hours game, but if you focus on the story, then it's about 20 to 30 hours. Now even longer with the 2 new free DLC expansion added.
Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining that it's short, but that I was having so much fun, that I wish it didn't end.

As always, please do add your own recommendations, and let me know if there is mistake or if something was missing, and have a nice day.

2024.05.14 22:48 heftybonkah To the previous post about the idea of cursed ship

Torn to shreds, the wreckage of the ship flew helplessly around the dying ship, the Geller field begins to slowly fade, as do those psykers who must keep it in working order while in an unbroken sleep. Indescribable horrors begin to seep through the shell of the ship, filling the decks with their demonic presence, tearing apart people who were not lucky enough to fall into the bottomless and bloodthirsty mouths of these soulless creatures. Throngs of techno priests and crewmembers rush through the dark corridors, illuminated only by the red light of emergency lamps, who are trying to hold the still surviving parts of the dying ship. The guardsman, who clearly differed in height from his comrades, carried in his hands, blackened with soot and oil, a box of tools for the priests who are trying to set up the ship's auspex in order to send a signal for help to the nearest ship of the faithful to the emperor.
Suddenly, a deafening roar went through the narrow corridor, followed by the scream of one of the demons, who managed to break through the protective perimeter, the stream of people changed direction and rushed with greater speed, knocking some off their feet, condemning them to certain death from the stream of people or the claws of the creature rushing after its victims. The guardsman was unlucky and, like other “lucky ones”, was knocked down. Noticing a small crevice, he crawled towards his hope of escape through rushing legs that stumbled over his relatively small body. Having grouped himself, he took out a small aquila on a chain from his breast pocket and began to whisper prayers to the emperor. The bloodthirsty scream began to approach, and after a few seconds he felt the heavy breathing of the creature that towered over him. Afraid to raise his head, he tightened his grip on the aquilla and began to recite the litany of protection. Almost at the same moment, the heavy tramp of boots encased in hardened ceramite plates was heard along the corridor from the side from which the creature arrived. The trampling grew louder and the creature that towered over the guardsman let out a deafening scream, but at the same moment it subsided as a small explosion literally vaporized the creature's head. The body fell with a crash and after a while, the sound of boots stopped near the place where the little defender of the empire was hiding. With a noise, the unknown man got down on one knee. The guardsman tremblingly raised his head and saw in front of him a tall man clad in black armor shimmering with turquoise energy. The helmet lenses of the same color stared coldly into the guardsman's face.

2024.05.14 22:47 Brentably Let's say you have 12 hours / day to commit to learning a language. How would you structure your time?

You are *not* in a country where they speak your target language. You have very minimal budget (can't afford to just fly to the country, or spend a ton on a bunch of language lessons). Your objective is to learn the language as quickly as possible.
MUST be *somewhat* realistic. For instance, there's no way someone could Anki for 12 a day straight, ro jump directly into native level content and be expected to pay attention for that long.
For me, I might say something like:
Target language: German from English.
Week 1:
  1. 30 minutes -- Anki cards: Run through German to English frequency dictionary deck. Also, can do sentences / phrases / words Languages on Fire deck. JUST German to English though. Put Anki settings on 0.8 retention goal, which will allow you to study a lot more words without the reviews piling up. Be loose on what you count as correct / incorrect. Give yourself a lot of leeway. If it's "risk" but you said "danger" you can count that as correct, for instance.
  2. 30 - 60 minutes of grammar study.
  3. 30 minutes optional of immersive content. You won't understand any content this early, and will have to translate a lot if you want to follow, so literally whatever keeps you engaged, whether you want to translate a lot.
  4. Take a break. Relax, chill. Exercise. Do low dopamine activities. No scrolling / video games / drugs / alcohol for the remainder of the challenge (with the exception of caffeine / stimulants).
  5. Whenever you're ready, go through this cycle again and again for the remainder of the day.
The goal for week one is to get much more acquainted with the language, and to speed run the first 500 - 1000 words so you can begin to pick A1 sentences apart. Breaking up Anki reviews into many different chunks and putting a 0.8 retention should allow you to hit really high numbers in the first week.
After first week:
  1. 30 - 45 minutes Anki cards. Continue on previous path, can afford to be a little bit more chill on new cards / day reviewed now, but should still seem like a *mad* number to the regular Anki user. Something like 50 or 60 new cards a day should do the trick. Do many Anki sessions throughout the day, but if they start to get annoying, stop your review session and pick it up later. You could probably accumulate ab 4 hours of anki / day this way and get through a ton of cards.
  2. Immersion session. Do something like LingQ or Language Reactor. Ideally something where you can test your ability, learn new words, but it not be too terrible. Once you reach ~2000 words or something like this, you can afford to be a little looser on which materials you use to review, b/c you'll begin to understand a whole lot more.
  3. Optional writing / speaking exercise. You can record yourself speaking about something, or journal about something, and optionally go through and correct your mistakes.
  4. Rinse and repeat.
Throughout this process, I've forgone any explicit grammar study, but basically the idea is that any questions you have about grammar as you go along, you should just research / ask ChatGPT, and optionally make some Anki cards about them. Stay curious and encourage yourself to be wondering a lot / asking these questions, but it should come from a natural place!
Bonus would would what if you *could* go to the target country / had more financial resources.
Eager to hear what you all think!

How To Handle Teenager Sneaking Out?

5 Ways Parents Can Find Out If A Teen Sneaks Out

Did you know many troubled boys and adventurous girls often sneak out at night to socialize with friends? Although sneaking out of the house in the middle of the night isn’t the worst behavior it certainly is a potentially dangerous one. But before you start researching a military school or therapeutic boarding school for your boisterous teenager, it is important to remain calm. Troubled teen boys and girls who are under the age of 18 and who exhibit bad behavior by sneaking out certainly need a little more parental attention. That goes without saying. But what can concerned parents do to make sure children and teens are staying safe at home at night? This article addresses the 5 best ways parents can stop any teenager from sneaking out and how to catch your teen the moment they do!

5 Tips for Dealing with Sneaky Teenagers

How To Catch Your Teenager Sneaking Out

First of all, it’s illegal for children and teens under 18 to be out late at night as most states have curfew laws. That means there can be real consequences for sneaking out at night regardless of teen peer pressure. These consequences for sneaking out can come in the form of fines, and of course, the more scary potential consequences of being a naive teen wandering the streets late at night. The reality is many teens often want to do things they are not allowed, especially if they’re told they can’t. Making matters more challenging for parents, apps such as TikTok and Instagram give teens an easy outlet to communicate with friends to secretly plan a coordinatedtime to sneak out and meet up. In fact, there are numerous Reddit threads and YouTube videos that are specifically aimed at providing info to teens on the best ways to sneak out without getting caught! This is the reason if you are a parent and you want to catch your teen sneaking out then we have you covered!

1. Track Your Teen's Car

https://i.redd.it/1t0y07kzeg0d1.gif
https://spacehawkgps.com/products/best-hidden-gps-tracker-for-car
One of the best ways to shape your teens' behavior in a positive way is through the use of a GPS tracking device. GPS vehicle trackers offer a simple way for you to know if a teen tells the truth about their driving behaviors and where they are going. And although a GPS tracking system on your child’s vehicle can't stop them from sneaking out at night, you will have the ability to know when they did sneak out and where they went!

2. Communicate With Your Teen

https://preview.redd.it/2yexrgz2fg0d1.jpg?width=1792&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fa64cd8d50a549b11e03e6515c507a4cb71ea541
If you’re a concerned parent who has already caught their child sneaking out of the house at night, one of the first emotions felt is likely anger and distrust. This is why it is critical that you try to remain calm. Start by framing the conversation so that you convey to your teenager that you understand the need for expanded freedoms. Talk with them honestly about healthy and positive ways they can exhibit they’re ready to have additional freedoms. If things are progressing in the right direction after this, consider coming up with a fair plan to extend curfew as your teen gets older and shows with consistency they can be responsible.

3. Install Motion Sensor Lights

If you caught your teen sneaking out and want to prevent them from doing it again consider installing alarms on your doors and potentially windows. Motion sensor lights with cameras can illuminate and record the perimeter of your home, making it easy to document when a teen tries to sneak out. In fact, this type of security is commonplace in boarding schools for troubled teens as well as treatment centers for teenage boys and girls. However, most modern teens are very tech-savvy and likely have the technical knowledge and know-how to turn these security devices off. Therefore, motion sensor lights, Ring alarm systems, and other video surveillance are probably best suited for younger children who wander.

4. Hide The Car Keys At Night

Sometimes the simplest answer is the easiest answer and that is why parents who want to stop teens from sneaking out should hide the family car keys at night. Be proactive by hiding the spare set of keys and make sure to never leave any keys hanging on a hook so that anyone in the house can find them. Teenagers who have their own car keys should turn in their vehicle keys to you every night.

5. Location Tracking Mobile Apps

If your teens refuse to have a GPS tracking device in their car and simply aren't being cooperative, one way to move forward is with tracking apps for iPhone or Android devices. Location apps will allow parents to know where their teen is located 24/7, giving parents an additional sense of personal security. Although GPS apps are great they do have one significant problem, and that is many teens are smart enough to remove the apps or turn their mobile phones off to stop parents from tracking them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do house rules help prevent sneaky behaviors?

Yes, establishing clear house rules is an effective way to prevent sneaky behaviors. By setting expectations and consequences, you create a structured environment for your teenager. This helps them understand the boundaries and potential risks of their actions. Reinforcing the importance of these rules will encourage responsible decision-making.

How can behavior charts assist in managing risky behaviors?

Absolutely! Behavior charts are a useful tool in monitoring and addressing your teenager's risky behaviors. By tracking their actions and progress, you can better understand their motivations and work together to improve their decision-making. Additionally, behavior charts can provide a visual representation of consequences and rewards, promoting accountability and responsibility.

Is it necessary to consider treatment programs for teenagers who frequently sneak out?

In some cases, yes. If your teenager's sneaking out becomes a persistent problem or is accompanied by other concerning behaviors, such as oppositional defiant disorder, it may be beneficial to explore treatment programs. Residential treatment centers, for example, provide a structured environment and professional support to help your teenager overcome challenges and develop healthier habits.

Can the teenage brain contribute to a teenager's inclination to sneak out?

Yes, the teenage brain is indeed a contributing factor. The teenage brain undergoes significant development, which can result in impulsive decision-making and risk-taking behaviors. Understanding the teenage brain's development can help you empathize with your child and provide guidance tailored to their unique needs.

How can online parenting resources help when dealing with a sneaking teenager?

Online parenting resources, such as articles, forums, and webinars, can provide valuable insights and strategies for handling a sneaking teenager. These resources often share experiences from other parents and expert advice from professionals, offering a wealth of information to help you navigate the challenges of parenting a teenager who is sneaking out. Don't hesitate to reach out through contact forms or online communities to seek support and advice from others in similar situations.

2024.05.14 22:47 No-Percentage-1910 Hello fellow Helldivers, fighters of tyranny, and spreaders of glorious managed democracy!

This is my first post in any Helldivers community, and I have a lot of ideas stockpiled from my experience playing the game. There's a lot I want to say, and in this post I'll try to cover it as best as I can. From community polls to just community discussion in general, it's clear that Helldivers 2 has some issues with balancing new Warbonds, and the player experience in general, and I'd like to give my input and suggestions to hopefully give a few people some things to chew on.
Balancing: The biggest issue. From my perspective, Helldivers 2 is a horde shooter where you're meant to feel powerful and destroy everything in your path. What the Helldivers 2 balancing team is trying to do right now is make the over powered guns weaker so that all weapons are equally viable, and I get that. What I think should be happening is maybe a little nerfing here and there for the insanely powerful guns, but mostly generous buffing of everything so that you can really feel powerful; this sounds good, but it also comes with some issues. One of those issues is that is would decrease the difficulty of the game, and because there is a maximum difficulty, it could take away from the experience of players who want a challenge. My suggested fix to this is to make the enemies more challenging, not with more health, or more damage, but with things like higher enemy counts and higher chances of calling in a bug breach or drop ship. This way, the guns would be more powerful, but there would also be bigger swarms, longer lasting fights, and more strategy would be needed when approaching patrols.
Another hot topic in the community is the frequency and quality of Warbonds, specifically the new Polar Patriots Warbond. Personally, I haven't bought any of the premium Warbonds, but I can still get the gist of their problems. I think it would be a viable solution if, for the next while, Arrowhead focused not on making more Warbonds, but making the previous ones actually good and fun to use. I know it's kind of strange to make major changes to things that people have bought with real money, and that is a reasonable concern, but think about the possibility of giving the previous Warbonds a makeover to really perfect the feel that they were going for with this. I'm not suggesting they change their identity or the identities of weapons and armour, but things like giving more weapons cool effects, and having a more diverse range of armour levels with passives that are valid to use. As an example for the Polar Patriots armour sets, I think it would be really cool and fitting if they used the Warbond's theme that is already there and made an armor passive that could be extra useful in snowy, cold planets; maybe it would stop sliding on ice, or give an increased climbing height from the shoe spikes, and give a super high stealth modifier during blizzards or something. Passives like this, along with themed Warbonds, would give players a better reason to get them, and encourage the use of different armours and playstyles.
That's all I wanted to say for now, so thank you for taking the time to read this, and if you didn't, here's a few key points:
I salute you all,

2024.05.14 22:47 curiosis78 Question about real-estate sale and other questions....

Hello,
I own a small apartment building that I am thinking about selling. The thing is, I don't really understand the tax implications of doing so.
I bought the building in 2004 for about $220k and it is worth a little over $500k now. I have depreciated it every year on my taxes using normal methods and made a few capital improvements. It is not my residence.
I understand that if I sell it outright I will owe some capital gains taxes.
  1. How would the taxable profit be calculated - based off the original purchase price or based on the purchase price less the depreciation I have been taking all these years?
1a. What percentage of the profits will be lost to capital gains taxes?
  1. I understand an income property can be 'traded' for another income property and the capital gains would then be deferred until the sale of the new property, is this correct?
  2. Can a multifamily set of units like mine be 'traded' in the way described for a short-term rental, or would it have to be another apartment building?
  3. Where can a person go for general tax advice like this? It seem like all the CPAs in my area want to do consultations in the hopes of selling ongoing services like accounting or bookkeeping - what kind of practitioner should I look for about one time issues like these?
Thank you in advance for your help with these questions!
