Side/main character additions for my book Anastasius!
Hello everyone! I’m running something for my book that I’m sure you’ll enjoy! I’m writing a book titled Anastasius which is Greek for Renewal. But I was thinking of a fun way to raise money for the book and a fun way to interact with potential readers! So I was thinking, if I give the characters who will be in my book, perhaps there could be a fundraiser for this! It will be $10 USD per character and there is no limit to how many characters you’d like! I’ll post the sheet for each character and you can pick and choose which tribe you’d like create your own character! If you have anymore questions I’ll be happy to answer! I take payments through PayPal as it’s the only thing I understand how to use!
Creatures of Renewal:
As written by Wyvern Scholars
Amphiptere:
Amphipteres generally were said to have light-colored feathers like a sunrise, a serpentine body, bat-like wings with feathers covering most of the forearm and often greenish in coloration, and a long tail much like a wyvern's tail. Others are described as covered in feathers with a spiked tail, bird-like wings, and a beak-like snout.
These small dragons are known to go after smaller prey like rodents and birds, as their habitatsavanna's heat, leavingrests. However, large colonies have been known to live in constructed settlements. Still, any knowledge of a leader has yet to be discovered. It has been rumored that the Amphiptere changes leaders when either the current one dies or willingly gives up the position of tribal leader.
Habitat: Forests, Jungles, or the forested remnants of human cities.
Arctic Dragon:
These giant, wooly dragons stand five feet taller than the most significant polar bears; their powerful muscles and jet-black skin under their blueish-white fur dominate most northern regions. Human settlements are where they prowl, waiting for humans hidden in these desolate territories for the perfect time to strike. These areas are far too cold for most dragons. Still, the Arctic dragon has adapted to survive in these brutal conditions. However, females only move southwards when their young are ready to be born. Once the younglings are old enough to walk short distances independently, the mother and cub begin trekking back toward the tundra.
Diet: These dragons hunt down various arctic prey, ranging from the smallest Arctic hares to the giant whales. Anything these dragons can get their talons on is food to them. Although young Arctic dragons do not have the speed or endurance their parents have, they rely on their parents to bring them back something they can eat.
Coatyl: The most noticeable feature of Coatyls is the feathered wings. These wings comprise a humerus connected to a radius and an ulna connected to metacarpals. The wings of a Coatyl allow it to fly, which is the primary method of locomotion. In unbonded Coatyls, the scapulars and front feathers are dark green, the covert feathers are light yellow or tan, and the primary and secondary flight feathers are red. Coatyls have pressurized sacs in the back of the mouth of a highly volatile and slightly acidic chemical known as coatalic acid. When threatened, muscles surrounding these sacs contract, pushing the coatalic acid out of small holes in the mouth and spraying it. When it comes into contact with air, coatalic acid undergoes a chemical reaction that causes it to ignite and become highly adhesive, sticking to whatever it lands on.
Diet: Coatyls primarily prey on small rodents like mice or rats. Coatyls cannot bite or tear their food to pieces, so they instead swallow their prey whole. They can do this as the upper and lower jaws of a Coatyl are not rigidly attached and have multiple joints, allowing them to open their mouths wide enough to swallow prey whole. While digesting food, Coatyls will typically avoid trying to fly and will instead travel along the ground.
Habitat: These dragons are usually found in the same territories as the Amphiptere. However, these Coatyls have been seen further south in the rainforests due to being more of a tropical species. Their size makes them easy prey for larger animals if they are not careful.
Dragon:
The Western European kind, with four legs, two wings, and (usually) fiery breath. Depending on how the work classifies things, these may be the only ones called "dragons." Otherwise, they're typically called authentic, Western, or European dragons. The Western dragon tends to be massive and heavy, with sharp claws and bat-like wings. They are usually with reptile features but may also have fur or feathers. Sometimes dark colored but always shiny. Some have forked tongues, others crests, fringes, or some other adornment. It always has the ability to spew forth blazing fire and fumes. In the West, dragons live in caves or mountain dwellers and predators. Cave dweller dragons stay in the coldness of the dark most of the time. The caves, filled with fire and water, are easily guarded and located close to towns, where food is convenient. Mountain predators live in cave-riddled mountains that provide an invincible tower and protection.
Diet: Western dragons tend to be considered carnivores. They like meat, flesh, and blood as their primary food source and are too fussy about the source. Sheep, cows, oxen, lions, elephants, or even humans, anything of a reasonable size and with warm blood and flesh to feast on, are their primary food sources. However, dragons haven’t shown a preference for the age or gender of humans. One interesting thing to note is that although they eat the flesh, they have a particular taste for blood. Sometimes, when in need of a quick burst of energy, they will only drink the blood of their prey and leave the flesh. This is seen as barbaric by most other species of dragons. Still, with western dragons being the second largest species, we tend not to mess with them and their dietary habits.
Drake: The drake is a dragon with four limbs, much like a lizard, although usually far more significant in size than the average lizard. A potent example of a drake in the natural world is the Komodo Dragon, a large species of minotaur lizard in Indonesia. These creatures have low-slung bodies, like crocodiles and alligators, with bellies across the ground. However, due to their natural habitat and human greed, wild drakes have been increasingly difficult to get notes from and other scholars to talk with. Drakes who are found are highly hostile and not open much to talking, but with enough food and gold, these dragons could easily talk your ear off.
Diet: These family-oriented dragons hunt together in packs; their size and numbers are easily strong enough to take down small herds of water buffalo, wildebeests, elk, and moose.
Feydragons: These dragons are about the size of a cat, each having an iridescent coat of scales that reflected all colors of the rainbow, predominantly reflecting one particular color, which changed with age. They had a long, prehensile tail and platinum-colored, butterfly-like wings. Like true dragons, faerie dragons grew stronger with age but matured much more quickly and lived shorter lives. Because their predominant scale hue ran the colors of the rainbow over their lifetime, their color directly indicated their age and power. The scales of a young hatchling were almost always red, and those of a fully mature dragon (over 50 years old) were violet. Most dragons leave these small ones alone because it is not worth expending calories to catch these little critters. But these small dragons are known across the globe for their beautiful woven tapestries and the symphonies they create with their wings.
Diet: Their diet mainly consists of small bugs caught in the air, from trees and bushes, and off the ground. They also fed on fruits, berries, nectar, and butterflies, which they ate to get the color and look of their wings.
Sea Orc: A Sea Orc has no arms or legs. It sports fins on the top portion and every few meters across its body, including one long fin that runs from the bottom of its head to its tail. A Sea Orc has little in the way of bones; it slithers through the waters like a snake. This assists the Sea Orc in attacking its prey. Sea Orc eggs cannot be fertilized in deep water, and smaller Sea Orcs cannot survive the pressure. Adult Sea Orcs have to head to shallower waters to mate. It is believed that the Sea Orc typically goes to warmer climates for mating.
Female Sea Orcs lay their eggs at the shoreline, close enough to the surface to be safe from the environmental killers but far enough from the water line that the parents can still protect their offspring. The eggs will grow for several months and will be born after size months.
Diet: These massive beasts eat mostly fish and aquatic life, anything they can catch; on rare occasions, they will eat a dragon, but that only happens when a rowdy juvenile dragon decides to go after a Sea Orcs calf.
Wyvern: The Wyvern is about the same size as the Arctic dragon, though in weight, they are closer to their brother, the Drake. The Wyvern is a two-legged dragon with two wings. They are believed to be faster than the more enormous Dragon. Their head is large and round, and they have a more petite mouth than most dragons. The body is thick but with a soft underbelly. The tail of the Wyvern is the most deadly. It is long serpentlike with a large mass at the end. They can also have a load of spikes within the ball or a significant spike at the top. The Wyvern uses this ball as its primary weapon, capable of smashing through most creatures, including other dragon's scales.
For its size, the Wyvern holds a large amount of weight. Most of this weight is within its thick scales. Anyone who has fought a Wyvern will inform you that getting through their body is next to impossible. The scales overlap several times, and underneath them is a thin net of tissue that absorbs impact and is resistant to being cut.
Diet: Moose, Elk, and Caribou are everyday staples of a wyvern diet, although anything that moves fits the wyvern needs as they have to eat at least 400 pounds of food every three days.
Humans: Not much is left from humans after they destroyed themselves; greed took out most of them, and the explosions hurt the rest. Humans have flocked to their caves deep in the ground. Most dragons leave humans alone, but humans have tried to take back their world a few times, but us dragons have quickly stamped out those little uprisings. Although some dragons keep humans as pets, their crafty little grabbers are relatively good at crafting the little things they need. Some dragons keep them for wealth status, and others just eat them for a rare treat.
Prey animals: Not much needs to be said here; anything a dragon can catch and eat is a prey animal.

2024.05.14 23:04 smcadam Undermountain Session Log 11- Floor 2, Dead Gaze

Tracking down the Xanathar Guild Outposts and the traitors of Halleth through Floor 2, this week the party had Goba, the Dwarven fighter barbarian, Archimedes, the Gnome artificer, Freyja, the half Elf paladin, and Nazar, the Goliath paladin.
Alongside them came Nanaz, Goba’s grouchy duergar uncle and manservant, and Halleth Garke, revenant adventurer currently dead in their portable hole.
DEAD EYES WATCH POST
Faced with an undead Beholder, the party at first found the Xanathar Guild Outpost to be quite tame. Archimedes shot it well with his magical gauntlets, but Nazar, Goba and Freyja have only basic ranged weapons. In turn, the two paladins protective auras prevented the vile magic from taking effect.
Up until doors slammed open, and a cohort of mobsters and orcs poured in, having heard the ruckus. The humans, led by a barbaric greataxe wielding woman, Nadia the Unbent, seemed to be in competition with garotter orcs led by a well armoured Boss Grox, with the orcs wearing symbols of an upside down tree.
Too little melee turned into too much melee very quickly. Goba heroically engaged in a barbarian duel with Nadia, Freyja battled an orc strangler, and Nazar unleashed a divine spiritual weapon upon the undead beholder. Who looked over them and unleashed a black bolt of energy directly at Archimedes. The gnome shook with deadly energy, quaking him to the very core, and was unsettled to realise he had almost been disintegrated.
It was a very close battle, swung by Goba slaying Nadia and the paladins slaying the orcs. They intimidated the human mobsters into standing down, while the Beholder was finally smited by Freyja, and Boss Grox retreated, ranting of traitorous Guildmen.
FLOOR TWO DAY TWO
Said treacherous Xanathar Guild men immediately legged it into the tunnels- the orc had another squad of orc mercs exploring nearby, and they didn’t fancy sticking around to face them all. The party was beaten and battered already so they hotfooted it back to the Goblin Bazaar, taking note of where the mobsters ran as another likely outpost.
After returning to the Rustbones Goblin Bazaar, they had the safe territory to rest up and heal up, reflecting on a wild day- on their first excursion through floor two, they’d allied with Queen Yenk, encountered Torbrand, slain the Stormskull, killed two targets of Halleth’s vengeance, defeated the Nothics, Demons, and Nadia the Unbent. Now quite bent.
Which is code for, boom, several of the party levelled up to level 7 quite early on in the floor, being Nazar and Goba who make sessions most regularly.
Over the night, Freyja dreamt of her father, an elven paladin named Jan. With him she had sworn before the shrine of Mielekee, Goddess of the Forest, to always be brave, strong, just. And she had seen him die, choked out on poison from a Green Dragon, Bullfang.
The dragon who lurks deeper down in the dungeon.
Come morning, with some encouragement from Queen Yenk, they ventured out once more.
DIPLOMACY???
They discovered Boss Grox along with another six orc mercenaries, eating breakfast with full packs back at the outpost. The orc debated if they wanted to attack him and die- or if they wanted to hire him. He and his crew were mercenaries, not truly loyal to Xanathar, up from the orcish tribe of the Hanging Tree that dwells on Floor Three.
The party elected to not fight or hire them, and poked around the rooms to find the orcs had thoroughly looted them, including of a magical dwarven hammer. But since the orcs are leaving and noone is loyal to Xanathar here, the outpost is wiped! Success! They also discovered another of Halastur’s Gateway portals here, marked with dwarven statues, grindstones, and a symbol for Floor Six.
Heading off to scout elsewhere, Halleth was revived and arose, delighted and furious that he had missed the chance to kill Rex the Hammer himself, so much so that he was bleeding from the eyes. He again croaked angrily that none had even attempted to give him funeral rites, and was hungry to search for his final target, Midna, somewhere nearby.
In the farthest north of the dungeon, they discovered a corridor trapped with dart shooters, and two Xanathar Guild Bugbear Guards. On Goba remembering a pass phrase from earlier, but saying it at the wrong time, they got a brief, stand off meeting with the outposts leader- a spider faced Drow named Shun.
Shun was impressed they’d taken down Nadia, a rival of his, and offered a simple challenge- they bring back a stone key from ratfolk stole from him, and he’ll put in a good word for them to join the guild. Otherwise, he’ll call on his men and start shooting them down a trapped corridor if they want to fight.
Another quest acquired? Maybe?
The party decided not to fight him for now, avoided some tunnels that stank of slime, and followed Halleth’s vengeance sense eastwards. There, beyond some grand old double doors, they found an oddly plush comfortable shrine with a fully laden feast table, bright magical fires illuminating the place, and a statue of Shar, Goddess of Night, Loss and Darkness.
Tending to the black-and-gold stonework was a woman clad in dark robes, smiling features and scarred flesh. Midna invited them to turn on Halleth, simply claiming that he was too troublesome to be kept alive. When they refused, Midna quietly elected to offer them to Shar, and the chamber plunged into darkness as long shadows sp

2024.05.14 16:48 OkUniversity2374 Aisha - The Whore of Babylon?

I plan to elucidate a lot of material in this group, because a lot of the attacks revolve around the character of "pedophile" Mohammad, but few are aware of the historicity of the rest of the characters in the fantasy cult of Islam.
Aisha is one such character. In my day to day life as a pretentious Shia Muslim, I curse this nonexistent character all day long. (The Shia version of Islam, in contrast to the Sunni version, reveres different characters from Islamic history, and hates a certain set of them), but in my Ex-Muslim mind, when I'm alone, I know that just as is the case with Mohammad himself, Aisha did not ever actually exist either. As I've continued to say, a lot of the fairytales of Islam are amalgamations from various different sources that existed before, during, and after the creation of Islam concocted into a cult of religion.
Noteworthy hatred that Shias have for this character includes the fact that IF Mohammad actually existed, he is regarded as a pedophile by the rest of the world through HER narrations.
But one thing that strikes me in particular about this fairytale character, is an Islamic battle, known as "the battle of the camel." In that battle, according to the myth of Islamic history, Aisha was riding a red camel, and was leading an army against Ali Ibn Abi Talib, a very legendary Islamic character that I plan to deconstruct later on.
In the Shia world, Aisha is regarded as a whore. To backup this claim, Shias cite several Ahadith from Sihah al-Sittah (the 6 Sahih sunni works of Ahadith), from her narrations about breastfeeding men, to her narrations about cleaning cum, to her narrations about a man sleeping over at her place and then washing cum off his clothes the next day, to a lot of other sexual Ahadith that she has narrated in the Sunni works of Ahadith.
A nickname that the mythical prophet of Islam gave to his mythical wife, Aisha, is "Homayra." Which simply means "the Little Scarlet/Red One."
In the case of Aisha, we have 3 things to note: 1. Red Camel 2. Whore of Arabia 3. Homayra (Scarlet/Red)
The book of revelations in the Bible extensively talks about the whore of Babylon, along with other passages in throughout the Bible. The whore of Babylon used to ride a scarlet beast, and she is oftend depicted in red dresses, etc.
In the case of the whore of Babylon, we have 3 things: 1. Red beast 2. Whore of Babylon 3. Red dresses
It is interesting to see that when the Abbasid Islamists were creating their fairytale Islamic religion, where they got their plentiful sources of inspiration from. Neither did Mohammad himself, nor did any of his friends, wives, or enemies ever actually existed.
While other ex-Muslims are using the Sihah al-Sittah and the Quran to create a picture of Mohammad in their heads as a barbaric pedophile mass murderer, and then proceeding to denounce his religion; I am arguing that all of it is fake and a fabrication of later generations, who were simply writing stories. Through government coercion and political support, these stories were later used to create a full fledge cult that was shoved down people's throats through several centuries of propaganda.
Persians of those times were very good at the art of propaganda. Even the word "Media" is Persian 🤦🏻

2024.05.12 14:36 SlavicSoul- Presentation of my world (need opinions)

Presentation of my world (need opinions)
Hi Reddit! I finally decided to introduce my world to you (it doesn't have a name yet). So, it's a dark fantasy world that I created... well, just for the fun of creating a world, maybe later I'll make it into a D&D campaign setting or something.
A few weeks ago I had the idea of creating a world (it all started when I imagined the Celestial race) it is not my first world that I created nor my last and so I quickly started to draw a rough map.
The Continent
I drew a continent that I called... the Continent (again, I have no idea of a name) and I'm quite satisfied with the shape, tell me what you think of it.
As for the climate, I'm not too innovative, the North is cold, the South is hot, and there is a large mountain range and several smaller ones, a very large forest and a variety of different terrains and lots of islands ((I will look into geography later).
GOOD. What made me want to create this world was to give a world to my different races that I had developed separately and that I wanted to bring together in a cohesive universe. So for now, races are what I have developed the most. Here is a quick presentation (I will talk about it in more detail in another post if this interests you) :
Humans: relatively similar to the real humans of our Earth, i however wanted to give them unique and somewhat magical abilities depending on their "ethnicity" which allowed me to diversify them a lot. The main ethnic groups are the Imperials, the Nordics, the Armadians, the Helosians and the Yeorenians (I will talk about this in more detail in another post if you are interested). Humans are not the dominant race, but do pretty well at surviving and creating kingdoms.
Elves: elves are on the border between animal and plant. They live in a vast forest and rarely leave it. Their skin is greenish or brown and they have plants growing on their bodies. They have three life stages: the first stage lasts up to 100 years, during this stage they have normal flesh and are quite close to humans biologically. After 100 years of life, the elves perform a ritual with the Great Tree called Communion where they accept within themselves a small part of the tree which will merge with their body and allow them to communicate with trees and animals, and to no longer needing to eat but only water and light to survive. And after 300 years, the elves literally become trees. But special trees, a bit like the “huorns” of Middle Earth. They can communicate telepathically with the elves who have made Communion and be animated in "Ent" mode with a magical rite if the forest is threatened. I drew this sketch to help you imagine what they are like during the second instar:
Elf after Communion
Wild Dwarves: The Wild Dwarves, nowadays more commonly called Dwarves, are for many the most resilient and for some the bravest people on the continent. Millennia ago, the ancient Dwarven empire of the Ascor Mountains collapsed due to numerous circumstances. The descendants of the Dwarves who did not perish had to flee into the wild, or over the centuries, adapted and forgot all about their past. Dwarves are smaller than humans but more robust, strong and resistant. Men grow a long beard of brown, red or blonde color. They dress in furs and cloth and leather clothing and often have a weapon at hand. Their technology is very primitive. Although they seem capable of working bronze and iron, they have very little of it. Their favorite materials are wood, bone and leather which they use for almost everything. They have never been seen to use Elder Dwarf clockwork artifacts. They have no written record and their oral tradition seems quite limited. They prefer to keep to themselves and are wary of strangers, but from what is known of their history, their myths and legends only seem to span a few hundred years. It appears that all knowledge of the ancient Dwarf Empire before its collapse has been lost. They are neither peaceful nor friendly people. They rarely trade with outsiders and have no established political relationships with other races. Their tribes are nomadic and they go where their herds go. Very often this takes them into the territories of other races. They frequently enter the Iron Marches. If they come across civilized settlements, they generally do not hesitate to attack and pillage them. They are very robust people, accustomed to harsh conditions and few luxuries. They train to be warriors and hunters from birth, and almost all adults are proficient with an axe, club, or spear. When they go into battle, they hit hard. Few villages can withstand a dwarven attack, and most end up burned to the ground.
Orcs: Orzimar is one of the most orderly and best governed kingdoms on the Continent. Instead of being savage brutes, most Orcs are actually quite genteel, law-abiding, and deeply religious. Their faith is somewhat esoteric and full of complex mysticism, making it difficult to explain to outsiders. But at the most fundamental level, it is the worship of fire. Practitioners of this religion view the flame as a metaphor for their own soul. Fire is a destructive force that, if left unchecked, will devour everything in its path, and such is also the nature of the orc soul. The faithful believe that their minds and bodies were forged in battle to become the most dangerous, effective, and uncompromising fighting machines in the world. In the past, orc warbands spread across the land like wildfires, conquering and destroying civilizations and leaving only smoldering ashes in their wake. The Temple of the Eternal Flame was created to curb these violent impulses and refocus them on something positive. Fire, despite its destructive potential, can be used to forge complex tools, cook meat to feed the hungry, cauterize wounds to stop bleeding, and more. If controlled, it is a force for good, much like the Orc civilization under the rule of the Temple. In modern orc culture, stoic detachment, non-violence, and wisdom are praised. The Temple has developed a strict code of conduct that all worshipers attempt to follow. Other races often call it an "honor code", but in the orc language its name actually translates to "personality code". The code essentially describes not what is virtuous, but what is the absolute minimum of decency one must demonstrate to consider oneself a civilized person. The code is actually long and nuanced, but in general it proscribes truthfulness, loyalty, keeping one's oaths, resorting to violence only when necessary, protecting the weak, and not giving in to emotions.
Celestials: They are the antagonists of my world. Most of the Celestials you will see around the world look like white angels, with blue eyes, blond hair, and white wings. They are members of the highest social caste of the race and are simply called the Celestials and live atop gigantic white spiers scattered throughout the realm. Each of the spiers rises above the clouds and has no stairs, ladders, or any other climbing tools. The only way to reach the summit is to fly, and anyone unable to fly is considered not worthy of visiting the summit. Each spire culminates in a flat space known as the Garden. The Gardens are extremely beautiful and carefully maintained places for recreation. The Celestials themselves live in chambers carved inside the spiers and gather in the gardens. The most important members of society live higher than the less important ones. The higher the spire, the more prestigious it is to live there. The tallest and largest spire in the center of the kingdom is reserved for the King of Kings and his court and is off limits to everyone. Even members of the court are only allowed to enter or leave upon invitation and authorization from the king himself. Lower-ranking Celestials have been known to be decapitated simply for looking at the arrow without proper respect. It is customary to avoid looking directly at the king's arrow to avoid being offended. Each spire is ruled by a lord who lives in the garden itself and has absolute power over the life and death of all his subjects. The slightest disobedience is usually punished by clipping the offender's wings and throwing him off the edge of the garden. On the other hand, failure to show proper reverence or respect to the Lord is usually punished by blinding the offender. The Celestials have no courts and justice is administered by the Lords. Their society is very rigid and orderly, guided by tradition and ritual, but built on the concepts of Social Darwinism. Society pushes strong, ruthless individuals to the top and stigmatizes and punishes any sign of weakness, empathy or compassion. Those in power are encouraged to abuse their position and intimidate subordinates, while any pushback is considered a mortal offense and severely punished (usually by death or physical mutilation).
Gnomes: Gnomes: Deep within the networks of galleries and tunnels beneath the Ascor Mountains, where the oldest ruins of the Dwarves and many forgotten things lie, the Gnomes have taken up residence, reveling in the darkness of the depths. They are small creatures (the same size as Kaws) possessing both humanoid and insectoid features. Their large eyes with strange pupils, conditioned by millennia spent beneath the surface, are capable of seeing in the dark as well as in broad daylight and their pair of antennae detect vibrations and changes in pressure and the chitin covering their body allows them to to protect yourself. dangers of the deep. Unlike insects, Gnomes have only four limbs with jointed fingers and do not have mandibles but a mouth and two nostrils. Gnomes rarely come out of their underground realm, so few people have had the chance to encounter them. Despite their unusual appearance, Gnomes possess superior intelligence and consider themselves guardians of the land. The Elder Dwarves once cooperated with the Gnomes, using them as guides in the deep or even sometimes as advisors. After the fall of the Dwarves, the Gnomes populated various ruins of their neighbors and appropriated much of their knowledge. Nowadays, Gnomes are, for example, the only race that knows how to make a dwarven machine and how cities under mountains are actually built. Certain foreign scholars therefore sometimes go on expeditions to the Mounts of Ascor to meet the scarab people and receive their teaching. Gnomes are wise and avoid conflict, they also possess psychic skills such as telepathy and are innately proficient in several spells. Their cities, called colonies, are very densely populated and resemble gigantic anthills. They are governed by a group of scholars called the Archivists who guard many ancient dwarven and gnome texts and make many decisions for the colony. There are three archivists per colony and three times a year they all meet in one of the colonies to debate and share their discoveries.
Kaws: Kaws are small ravenfolk without wings, in fact I invented them from the Kenkus of D&D. Long ago, before the colonization of the Continent, the Kaws were the most numerous of the indigenous races. They were everywhere. They took to the skies and built their villages on treetops, cliff sides, or other high places. They were a proud and honorable people with rich culture and traditions, called Ma-Kaws. Then their story was abruptly interrupted when the first Celestials landed in the North. The Celestial troops poured into the forest towns of Ma-Kaw, the Kaws fought back and resisted for a few years. But the King of Kings of the time summoned his mages of the Celestial Order to cast a powerful curse on their enemies. Because of fate, Kaws would now be born without wings. Their homeland invaded by the Celestials, the raven men fled and emigrated en masse throughout the continent. The Celestians persisted in pursuing the survivors but quickly gave up while the Kaws mingled with the populations of the West, the East and the South, avoiding the North who were still too close to the Celestians. Since the fall of Ma-Kaw, the Kaws have never formed a nation again and have never gathered in a large group. Despite the fact that the Celestials no longer seek them out, the Kaws still have an instinctive need to hide. They are mostly thieves, assassins and smugglers, few people trust them but they still have a lot of qualities.
Here are the main races, there are others like the Djinns, the Resurrected or the Hobyars but they are less developed and I don't have much space to talk about them yet. Then I invented the kingdoms of my world. Here too, everything is not finished and I have a lot of “terra incognita”. I have roughly drawn the boundaries:
Political boundaries
1 - the Celestial Empire. The Celestials conquered a vast territory by destroying everything in their path and enslaving the local populations. It is the most powerful political entity.
2 - the Kingdom of Orzimar. Theocratic kingdom of the brave Orcs, it slows down the expansion of the Celestial Empire towards the West and is an example of order and safety. Orzimar is governed by the priests of the Temple of the Eternal Flame.
3 - the Third Empire (before there were two others) is the most powerful of the human kingdoms, populated by the Imperial ethnic group. A military state known for its dragon riders and effective tactics as well as its silk production, the Third Empire is ruled by an Empress.
4 - the Clans of Yeoren. Plains populated by fierce clans of Yeorenian humans, formidable sorcerers and horsemen very attached to their independence. The Third Empire often tried to conquer them, without success.
5 - the Land of Hob. One of the races that I am not described are the Hobyars (or Hobgoblins). Basically, they are large, intelligent goblins (because my goblins, which I call gnoblars, are small and stupid except in groups). The Land of Hob is a monarchy where the King Hob reigns, but the government is very chaotic and it is rare for a King Hob to stay in place for more than five years.
6 - the Kingdom of Dargolath ? Despite the fact that this kingdom covers a large territory, I don't know much about it. This is a human kingdom of an ethnicity that I have not yet created and I would like to make it a corrupt kingdom full of vices, especially among the nobility, or perhaps in civil war.
7 - the Great Forest ? The name sounds awfully simple so I'm looking for a better name. It is a very large forest populated by many elves. Half of the trees are made of late stage elves and in the center is the Great Tree. People are very afraid of this forest, really no one in their right mind would go there.
8 - the Northdale. It's very cold there and the Nordics live there. It's known for its bear riders and ice mages as well as its knights in super large and heavy armor (please don't think of a Russian inspiration for this kingdom because it's not the case) .
9 - the Iron Marches. A group of small, loose kingdoms initially part of Orzimar but populated primarily by humans. These are just a few fortresses in the wildlands.
10 - The Ascor Mountains. The highest mountain range on the Continent is located here as well as the ruins of the ancient Dwarven Empire. Of course, the mountains don't encompass the entire region, but since no one other than the Dwarves lives there they just call it "wildlands" or "Ascorland".
11 - the City of Helos. Helos, is one of the oldest cities on the Continent. Helos is a magocracy and contains the Academy of Helos and the Helosian Order where the majority of mages on the Continent are trained (for the functioning of magic in this world, I will talk about it in the comments if anyone is interested or in another post).
12 - The Malorne. A vast cursed swamp where all that are rejected take refuge.
13 - the Kingdom of the Sword. A military dictatorship that hates Helos and strictly forbids magic and hates religion. But damn, how beautiful their women are!
14 - the Wild Coast. Nothing here. Just a...wild coast.
15 - the Great Sea of Grass. It is a vast steppe populated by tribes of aggressive centaurs and a few Yeorenians.
16 - the Kingdom of ???. So I don't know what to put here. Maybe minotaurs?
17 - The City-States of Peloras. A league of merchant cities ruled by greedy princes, the greatest economic force on the Continent.
18 - the Desert of Qaesh. In the middle of the infinite dunes live the Djinns of Qaesh, a trading and mercantile people but full of mysteries. In the desert there are also many ancient ruins of unknown origins.
19 - the Kingdom of Aswanar. A powerful human slaver state that worships the carcass of a dragon.
20 - Oops, I forgot the 20 !
21 - the Land of Giants ? My giants live in the jungle and look a bit like Olmec giant heads.
22 - the Black Jungle. It is a very large and dense jungle haunted by evil spirits and populated by tribal Lizardmen. It is also the home of the Sserethes, a race of serpent-men who were vicious but later spread across the Continent.
23 - the Land of Beasts. Here live human tribes considered barbaric by their neighbors. Each clan is linked to a protective totem animal which gives them special abilities.
24 - the Armadian Islands. An archipelago made up of hundreds of small islands and one large island where there is a city called the Capitol. The Armadian Islands are home to humans of the Armadian ethnic group, skilled navigators and fishermen.
So. Please leave comments, say if you like any stuff or if you have any advice or ideas for me. I will now start to invent religions and geography as well as develop some kingdoms. Really if you like it, I can make other posts. I still have a lot of lore in my head, especially about Humans and Celestials. And then I haven't yet talked about certain races.
Thank you for your answers.

2024.05.12 12:37 JG98 I want to highlight Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal, a lesser known but significant Panjabi freedom fighter from the 1857 rebellions.

I want to highlight Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal, a lesser known but significant Panjabi freedom fighter from the 1857 rebellions.
Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal emerges from the dusty pages of history as a defiant figure, a Panjabi Muslim chieftain who stood resolute against the tide of British imperialism in the 1850s. Though many details of his early life remain shrouded in some mystery, historical accounts paint a picture of a leader who rose from tribal prominence to become a powerful symbol of resistance during a pivotal moment in Indian history.
Born around 1776 in Jhamra village (then in the Jhang district), nestled within the unforgiving Sandal Bar region, Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal hailed from a wealthy landowning family. This lineage granted him significant influence within his tribe, known for their longstanding presence in the region. He was named leader of the Kharal tribe, following in the footsteps of his father Rai Nathu Ram Kharal, potentially due to his honed skills in leadership, warfare, and horsemanship.
Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal's defining moment arrived in 1857, when the embers of rebellion against the British East India Company began to ignite across India. In a pivotal encounter, the assistant commissioner Gogera (Okara), Leopold Oliver Fitzhardinge Berkley demanded men and horses from Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal to quell the uprising. Refusing to be cowed, Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal defiantly rejected this request, highlighting his tribe's unwavering independence and setting the stage for open defiance. It is claimed that in his rejection is request, Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal replied that "Kharals do not share women, horses and land with anyone".
Later news of British oppression would reach a fever pitch when Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal learned of their brutal arrest of innocent tribesmen, including women and children. Fueled by righteous anger and a deep sense of justice, Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal, along with allies from other tribes, launched a daring attack on the local jail. This audacious act of defiance resulted in the liberation of many imprisoned individuals, a significant blow to British authority.
The attack was successful, but not without hiccups. British records from the time state that 17 rebels died, 33 were injured, and 18 escaped during the jail raid. Local stories, however, claim 145 rebels died and over 100 British soldiers were killed. The British captured Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal but eventually released him due to pressure from local tribes and a lack of evidence to convict him.
Following this successful operation, Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal understood the need for a more sustained resistance. He skillfully united various tribes including Kathia, Wattoo, Fatayana and Joiya under a common banner, forming a formidable guerilla force. Utilizing the treacherous terrain to their advantage, these fighters disrupted British communication and movement. The rebel forces numbered between 20,000-30,000 fighters at its peak. They would take refuge in jungles and attacking in large groups of 3,000-5,000 signaled by drumbeats. The rebellion was so effective that it cut off the connection between Jhang and Lahore.
The forces planned a major attack on Gogera, however the path to freedom is rarely smooth. Despite their valiant efforts, Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal's plans were betrayed by an internal rival, Sarfraz Kharal of Kamalia, who sold out the plans to the British. Undeterred by a signficant loss, Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal continued his resistance from the jungles of Gashkori, leading his fighters from one skirmish to another. This unwavering spirit ultimately led him to a tragic end when the British launched a large attack on their jungle encampment amidst his afternoon prayers.
The tragic fate of Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal would not break the spirit of resistance among the rebels. A trusted associate, Murad Fatayana, would later avenged his death in a strategic counter attack. During the attack the rebel forces would kill Berkeley along with over 50 EIC soldiers. These forces would continue their resistance until 1858, when signficant EIC reinforcements would overpower the local tribes.
Though the rebellion eventually subsided, Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal's legacy continues to resonate. He is revered as a folk hero in Panjab, his bravery and defiance forever etched in the collective memory of the region. He serves as a powerful symbol of resistance against oppression, a testament to the human spirit's unwavering pursuit of liberty. Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal's story, though incomplete, reminds us of the power of leadership, the importance of unity, and the enduring flame of resistance that can ignite even in the face of overwhelming odds.
In a final act of cruelty, Ahmad Khan Kharal's head was decapitated and put on display at Gogera Jail as a gruesome warning to others. However, this act of barbarity backfired. A few days later, one of his supporters, defying the British presence, stole the head and buried it in his ancestral graveyard in Jhamra. Local dhola poems, recited after his death, described Ahmad Khan's martyrdom as Britain lowering the head of Panjab: "With Ahmad Khan's martyrdom, Britain has lowered the head of Panjab," a powerful testament to his enduring legacy.

2024.05.11 18:52 No_Wealth_4127 My personal experience/ suppository ruined my sexual development

I posted this on the parenting subreddit where it got deleted since a lot of parents felt personally attacked. It shares my personal experience and my concern for the children who get these dangerous treatments:
Dear Parents, I feel like it is my duty to share my personal experience and how it affected me personally. I know many of you, especially those who had done these things to your children will feel offended or hurt by this but this is the truth of how these things affected me and I think it is important to raise awareness and save as many children as possible from this heinous abuse. My parents did many gruesome things to me as a child but the worst of all was forcefully penetrating me anally. As a child, they would feed me a classic American diet with a lot of white bread and processed meat and they would only feed me when I was hungry. As you can imagine, a toddler doesn’t always ask for food and has to be properly fed. Because of this I wouldn’t poop for days. As far as I remember, I wasn’t even constipated, I had just barely eaten for days. They would then pull my pants down against my will and that disgusting whore of a mother would sit on my legs to restrain me, they would both hold me and insert their fingers inside me against my will and against my wishes. They would push these glycerin suppositories inside me while I was being restrained, the feeling of being opened like that filled me with disgust and dread. And then the worst part came, I had to feel how they were melting inside me against my will, the pain was horrible. It was worse than forced anal sex (which I have also experienced later in life), they would look at me jump through the room in pain and ignore me. Some of the times my mothers even looked pleased, she loved doing it to me. They started doing this to me when I was 1 and a half years old and up until I was about 3 or 4. This experience had a strong impact on my sexual development, it completely messed me up sexually. I had also been sexually assaulted years later but the normal sexual assault wasn’t even comparable to the assault with the suppositories. My own parents ruined my sexual development. It is now impossible to have sexual intercourse without being triggered by it and immediately being reminded of how my parents did that to me. I will forever associate my parents to anal rape. I have been in therapy for many years but it is hard to find a therapist who takes medical rape seriously. I have met many people who had gotten forced enemas or forced suppositories as children and all of them seem to have a sexual trauma from these. I have never met a single one who hasn’t been affected by it, some worse than others. Even though there are so many victims of this abuse who were severely traumatised, there are barely any scientific studies about the long term psychological effects of these procedures. Since it comes to the health of children, I don’t find this acceptable. Parents can’t be properly informed about the dangers of these procedures because nobody is willing to do extensive research. There are other medical procedures known to cause sexual trauma such as VCUG who has been studied to some extent but I wasn’t able to find any decent scientific research on the psychological effects of suppositories and enema. The topic revolves around the bodily and mental development of children, yet doctors prescribe these barbaric procedures even though there is virtually no serious research to the possible detrimental health consequences. You can even get suppositories at the pharmacy without prescription. I know parents are very easily persuaded by doctors and it is very easy to think "I know this feels wrong but if it were harmful, doctors wouldn’t suggest it” - wrong, remember they also suggest VCUG and in the 1970s they used to do surgery on children without anaesthesia. You have to be your child’s greatest advocate and protect them from sexual trauma. Approach these procedures with caution, only if the child’s life is actually in danger, keep in mind, there is no research that suggest these procedures are safe for the mental health of the child but there are a lot of adults who say that they have experienced sexual trauma from these.
Just because they have a short term benefit on a temporary bodily condition, it doesn’t mean they aren’t harmful long term. Your child might also need heart surgery to survive, that wouldn’t make it okay to perform surgery on it without sedation and anal penetration is extremely traumatic to children, maybe just as traumatic as surgery.

Quick Advice

Common Questions

What happens when all the Bitcoin are mined; how will miners be paid?
This will happen when we all are dead near the year 2140.
Total block reward = Inflation (coinbase reward) + transaction fees
Where there is a slow transition as inflation drops in a controlled supply where more and more of the total reward is made up of transaction fees

After 2140 all of the reward for miners to secure the network will be transaction fees but sending bitcoin will still be inexpensive because most transactions will occur on other layers like lightning and in aggregate settle onchain .
Also keep in mind that if hashrate drops too low we can simply wait for more confirmations onchain to increase the level of security and this doesn't effect the end user much because if they use a lightning wallet once its setup they still get instant confirmations.

Some foundational Principles of security

If you don't own much value in Bitcoin these principles are not for you. There is no one solution and most people have different risk profiles and make multiple trade offs in a risk vs convenience spectrum.
  1. Never store your bitcoins in a web wallet or exchange . You own 0 bitcoins if you do not control your private keys.
  2. Do not trust strangers on the Internet to help you setup your personal wallet. This is someone you must do yourself or have a personal friend or family member help you with in real life where they cannot see your backup seed.
  3. Buy your hardware wallet directly from the producer or amazon site under the producers name. Verify the integrity of the hardware wallet if you are extra paranoid :

First update the firmware of your HW wallet before using
4) Never brag about your wealth to others
5) Never invest in any investment scheme or get greedy thinking you can quickly increase the amount of Bitcoin you have with daytrading
6) Consider more secure means of backing up your 12 or 24 BIP39 backups in case of floods or fire - https://jlopp.github.io/metal-bitcoin-storage-reviews/
7) Setup your hardware wallet , transfer a small amount of btc to it, wipe it clean , and restore it to give you confidence that the backup was done right and give you experience in the recovery process.
8) Keep your Mnemonic 12 or 24 word seed secret and private and show to no one. Never use premade 12-24 word backups , you create new keys and backups upon setup.
9) The most secure , "active" wallet would be a hardware wallet integrated with a full node. HW wallet + electrum personal server and electrum is the popular way to do this
10) Use a passphrase with the hardware wallet (most the security concerns with HW wallets are solved with a passphrase.) keep the passphrase written down a separate from your seed words
https://wiki.trezor.io/Passphrase
https://help.blockstream.com/hc/en-us/articles/5131416184601-What-is-a-passphrase
https://coldcardwallet.com/docs/passphrase
https://shiftcrypto.support/help/en-us/21-optional-passphrase
Make sure the passphrase is also written down somewhere private so you do not forget it! Do not keep the passphrase in the same location as your 12-24 seed backup words. Passphrases should include random words and not words found in lyrics or literature or personal details related to your life.
Here is a good strategy for most people with hardware wallets -
Location 1 12 to 24 seed words preferably on metal
https://jlopp.github.io/metal-bitcoin-storage-reviews/
Location 2 same 12 to 24 seed words preferably offsite
Location 3 5-7 word passphrase unlocking your real wallet preferably offsite
Location your head pin for HW wallet and passphrase. If you don't use your passphrase at least once a month than its better to have 2 written copies stored on paper or metal as backups and kept separate than each other and seed words
Thus you have both the passphrase and seed word backup in 2 locations and can lose either one and if someone finds your seed words or passphrase alone they can only see your decoy wallet at most and under duress(torture) you can hand over one of your seed word backups or enter in your pin instead of passphrase and give the attacker your decoy wallet alone.
Every 6 months check to see if your backup seed words or passphrase written on paper or metal is disturbed or removed.(these need to be stored separately!) It is best to hide them in such a manner if you can tell if someone has tampered with them or found them so you are aware if either your seed words or passphrase becomes compromised.

Common types of Scams to avoid

"Helping" Hand A thief will contact you privately by DM or email, or get listed in a directory as a "Professional Blockchain Expert" and help you setup a Bitcoin wallet , an exchange account, and buy Bitcoin but will end up stealing it later. One of their favorite wallets to use is Blockchain.com online web wallet(You should avoid using this wallet regardless for other reasons) where they can remotely help you. They will either ask for your 12 backup seed words or when you are logged in create another backdoor recovery to take over your wallet without you knowing. When setting up a wallet it is important that you do this yourself and never reveal any passwords , pins , passphrases, of backup seed words to anyone. Do not allow some stranger to remotely help you setup your wallet or account. If you need help in person and trust a family member or friend this is fine but have them walk away/turn their head when you create a password , and write down your backup seed words and never reveal this information to others. Use your own personal computer or cellphone and not theirs to create your account. After you have verified the backup words with the wallet software they can than help you further. Never allow them to see or copy your exchange or email passwords or backup authy/authenticator key as well. Do not keep your passwords in plaintext digital spreadsheets or word/text documents. Use a password manager like keepass/lastpass or at minimum keep a book of your passwords that is secure and privately written down outside the computer. This scam can also manifest itself after you have had your BTC stolen by a friendly "hacker" claiming they can recover your BTC for a modest fee, which is practically never the case.
Unfortunate Events Professional Beggars will create many posts or hundreds of DMs under various fake (shill) identities to solicit sympathy and ask for a Bitcoin donations because they were scammed or had some unfortunate crisis.
Advanced Fee Fraud- This is one of the most common forms of fraud, and is popular even outside the cryptocurrency ecosystem. With cryptocurrency it often takes to form of these variations:
a) The con artist will claim they have a large amount of Bitcoin "stuck" in an exchange because of legal reasons or some other excuse and need your assistance to withdraw the Bitcoin. They offer you their username and password to log into their account and claim that you can even keep a large reward and than send them the difference of Bitcoins to their personal wallet. When you login to withdraw the Bitcoin you will notice a high withdraw fee or deposit that needs to be made for verification before you are allowed to withdraw the Bitcoin that cannot be subtracted from the balance. Since the fee is much less than your expected reward and the exchange looks legitimate despite being one you are unfamiliar with you pay the fee and than realize that the exchange is a fake one that will never allow you to withdraw the Bitcoin.
b) You are trying to sell something online and someone offers you a pre-payment in fiat with a payment service, a cashiers check, or a regular check and than "accidentally" overpays and asks for a refund to be sent to them in Bitcoin or by other methods. You are confident you receive the money because you deposit the check and it appears to clear and shows up in your bank account or digitally shows in your paypal account or other platform and so you are happy to send them the difference in over payment. One key aspect is international money transfers, gift card payments, or Bitcoin are typically non-reversible while most other payments are reversible and this can occur at almost anytime in the future. The check or payment can be involved in fraud or be fake and the payment platform or bank will reverse the deposit(possibly leaving you with a negative balance) and you will be legally liable to reimburse the bank. You will than be left with having to reimburse the bank and be out of Bitcoin and the product you sold the scammer.
c) A company offers you an investment or mining opportunity and to gain your trust is even willing to send you some Bitcoin up front to gain your confidence. Problem is the Bitcoin is frozen in their platform , a watch only wallet, represented in a fake blockchain explorer, or you did not wait for a confirmation to insure that you can use it and you invest in them not knowing that the Bitcoin they sent you is unusable. Common scam here is saying that you can connect your blockchain.com wallet to their "mining server" to mine for free and than require you to pay a fee to withdraw BTC that is watch only because they setup your account for you.
d) A contest or free giveaway usually promoted by a celebrity(typically a fake account on twitter) offers you free Bitcoin or cryptocurrency if you make a small bitcoin deposit up front to enter. The grifter will take your BTC and run.
e) A company solicits to hire you for assistance in buying Bitcoin for them at various ATMs or with your account and offers a salary for this service. They will never pay you or send checks that will eventually bounce as fiat currency lacks transaction finality that bitcoin has.
f) Someone offers you a large amount of Bitcoin as a gift or to pay for a good or service by giving you words to import or a private key to import into a wallet instead of sending Bitcoin to an address you provided them from a wallet you setup independent of them. You open up the wallet and they claim that in order to unlock the full amount you need to buy more bitcoin and add it to the wallet or send to them when in reality the amount of bitcoin you imported is a small amount or unspendable.
Investment Opportunity- These take the form of a company that allows you to make an investment and has promised guaranteed returns due to them trading cryptocurrency, mining cryptocurrency, fx or binary option trading, or any other investment enterprise such as real estate. Some will simply take your Bitcoin and run and others are ponzi schemes which will slowly payout rewards to their platform that you can never withdraw or make payouts but these never add up to your total investment.
Two quickest warning signs that an investment scheme is extremely likely to be a scam is they promise guaranteed returns , and their promised returns exceed 10% per year.
Altcoins, ICOs, Security tokens 99% of these are pointless projects or scams which make dishonest marketing claims that most people don't have the technical ability to evaluate. Even projects that have the best of intentions fail because the incentives are all misaligned for an exit when you give 100% funding upfront without regulation, contract with preconditions, and invested from unqualified credulous investors. Sticking to projects that are 100% proof of work with no premine or instamine from the start is a way to filter through most of these projects but in the end you should do your due diligence and learn about the project before investing. This applies to Bitcoin as well. People should be free to invest in whatever project they wish but one should do so with an understanding in what they are investing in.

2024.05.10 14:44 Emergency-Grass2687 I despise communism

You never lived under communism, absolutely all the prosperity in your country was because of capitalism. Communism leads to concentration camps and firing lists, compare western and eastern Europe, eastern Europe lives much poorer because of the influence of communism. Compare North and South Korea, compare West Germany and East Germany, compare Cuba and Dominican Republic, compare China and Japan. Communism is the idea of stupid primates, all are equal, kill and disperse intellectuals and barbarically divide their property without knowing how to manage it. But it is capitalism that is the most effective idea, because only the most talented and adaptable succeed and they continue the gene pool. Absolutely all communist countries are poor, every single one of them, and this is a FACT that cannot be argued with. In the USSR there was no toilet paper, you had to stand in line for bread for 1 hour, for sausage for 3 hours and it happened once a month. Soviet citizens had no normal medicine, constant shortages, absolute lack of even minimal opposition, hunger and surrounding poverty. Try googling "typical Soviet houses", which still look very depressing, both in post Soviet countries and for example in Eastern Europe. Communism is a virus that corrupts western society, leftists are the main problem in western Europe, they are responsible for terrorist attacks, Syrian refugees who trash and oppress women. And don't accuse me of racism, we should let into Europe those who respect equality, laws and democracy. If some Syrian is imbued with the ideas of democracy and equality, but he is oppressed by dictatorship, then he should go to Europe and contemplate the wonderful

2024.05.10 13:55 HadrovejSD will my wizard dmg get better?

Hi, kinda new to BG3 but I played divinity 2 a lot. I love playing caster characters and usually go with mixed dmg party. Right now I am at begining of act 2 and beat I would say first small boss on tactician diff. My party is barbar 5/ fighter 2 Karlach, light cleric Shadowheart, paladin Astarion with one hand sword and shield and tav wizard.
My wizard dmg is so low in compare with karlach and astarion its kinda sad and I am not sure if its build issue or its meant to be. I remember in divinity 2 on this level my mages were kinda strong but here my spells are very weak and also miss a lot. Shadowheart single target dmg is also very low but she has very good aoe dmg with radiance of dawn and spirit guardians.
Usually mages have lower dmg in early game but I feel its opposite right now. Like on first levels cloud of daggers was big nice dmg spell but limited uses. But now at level 7 melee chars with theirs double attack make huge dps and my wizard upcasted fireball hits less than one melee strike from Karlach if it hits at all.
Am I supposed to be just support and casting cc here and there?
PS: I am not complaining I am just looking for answers if its get better or what is the issue.

Edward Gibbon

08 May 1737 – 16 January 1794
Part of a Series on the Philosophy of History
Edward Gibbon and the Civilizational Perspective
Wednesday 08 May 2024 is the 287th anniversary of the birth of Edward Gibbon (08 May 1737 to 16 January 1794), who was born on this date in 1737.
We have a record of both the beginning and the end of Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, which add a note of personal poignancy of that great monument of Enlightenment thought, since Gibbon supplied us with the lived experience bookends of the experience of writing his book. Here is how he described his initial inspiration:
“It was at Rome, on the 15th of October 1764, as I sat musing amidst the ruins of the Capitol, while the bare-footed fryars were singing vespers in the temple of Jupiter, that the idea of writing the decline and fall of the city first started to my mind. But my original plan was circumscribed to the decay of the city rather than of the empire: and though my reading and reflections began to point towards that object, some years elapsed, and several avocations intervened, before I was seriously engaged in the execution of that laborious work.”
On 27 June 1787, just shy of 23 years later, Gibbon finished his great project, and he memorialized the moment with a note that appears in his posthumously published autobiography:
“I have presumed to mark the moment of conception: I shall now commemorate the hour of my final deliverance. It was on the day, or rather night, of the 27th of June, 1787, between the hours of eleven and twelve, that I wrote the last lines of the last page, in a summer house in my garden. After laying down my pen, I took several turns in a berceau, or covered walk of acacias, which commands a prospect of the country, the lake, and the mountains. The air was temperate, the sky was serene, the silver orb of the moon was reflected from the waters, and all nature was silent. I will not dissemble the first emotions of joy on the recovery of my freedom, and, perhaps, the establishment of my fame. But my pride was soon humbled, and a sober melancholy was spread over my mind, by the idea that I had taken an everlasting leave of an old and agreeable companion, and that whatsoever might be the future fate of my History, the life of the historian must be short and precarious.”
Gibbon was living in Switzerland when he finished his book, for the simple reason that he could do his work remotely and the costs of living in Switzerland were cheaper than living as he would have lived in England. Thus Gibbon was able to enjoy the view of the lakes and mountains of Switzerland that he mentions in this passage.
Gibbon’s tale grew in the telling. When he first conceived the work, it was to describe the decline and fall of the city of Rome. Gibbon’s work grew to a narrative of the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, and, having come thus far, Gibbon then also narrated another thousand years of the ultimate failure of the Eastern Roman Empire, which had become Byzantium. In a letter to Sigmund Münz, Ferdinand Gregorovious said that he had returned to Gibbon’s original project, which Gibbon had effectively abandoned by expanding his work to a greater scope:
“This conception of medieval Rome as a city originated with me. I gave it a literary form and carried out Gibbon’s first idea; for it is well known that he had originally intended to write the history of the city of Rome during the middle ages.”
Gibbon’s book, once completed, comprehended well over a thousand years of history. Greater spans of history had been covered by others, but no one else brought historiographical unity of treatment to this longue durée account of an epoch of western civilization. The title of Gibbon’s book—The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire—is familiar to everyone with the merest passing acquaintance with history. Even the idea of a “decline and fall” has become something of a cultural meme. The idea of the “decline and fall” of a civilization is as familiar as the idea of the rise and fall of civilizations over historical time.
The eventual comprehensive form that Gibbons project took forced Gibbon to think from a civilizational perspective. Because of its comprehensive, civilizational scope covering more than a thousand years, Gibbon’s Decline and Fall narrates the histories of many peoples, many societies, and events of many different kinds, which means that some periods receive detailed attention while others are glossed over. Gibbon’s history lingers over events he finds most interesting while passing with barely a notice over events that do not stand up to his implicit standards of historical interest.
What are Gibbon’s implicit standards of historical interest? We find a clue to this late in the book when Gibbon skates over a great deal of material and acknowledges his reasons for doing so:
“…the events by which the fate of nations is not materially changed, leave a faint impression on the page of history, and the patience of the reader would be exhausted by the repetition of the same hostilities, undertaken without cause, prosecuted without glory, and terminated without effect.” (Chapter XLVI: Troubles In Persia.—Part I.)
By these criteria, historical interest for Gibbon is defined by events by which the fate of nations are materially changed, when hostilities are not mere repetitions, when they are undertaken with good cause, then are prosecuted with glory, and are terminated with great effect. This is what I mean by thinking on a civilizational scale, and from a civilizational perspective. By acknowledging that he was largely passing over events that do not meet his criteria of historical interest, Gibbon also implicitly acknowledges the possibilities of other histories that conform to other criteria of historical interest.
Georg Ostrogorsky, in his classic History of the Byzantine State, which goes into great detail on matters that Gibbon only touched upon in passing, cites several Enlightenment thinkers who shared Gibbon’s relative lack of interest in the Byzantine half of the empire:
“The seventeenth-century interest in Byzantium had had remarkable results, particularly in France. Byzantine studies, however, met with a most unfortunate setback in the eighteenth century. The enlightened age of rationalism was proud of its ‘reason’, its philosophical outlook and its religious scepticism, and it despised the history of the whole medieval period. It was particularly contemptuous of the conservative and religiously minded Byzantine Empire whose history was merely ‘a worthless collection of orations and miracles’ (Voltaire), ‘a tissue of rebellions, insurrections and treachery’ (Montesquieu), or at best only a tragic epilogue to the glory of Rome. And so Byzantine history was shown as the thousand years’ decline of the Roman Empire by Charles Lebeau in his Histoire du Bas Empire (Paris, 1757-86) and by Edward Gibbon in his Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (London, 1776-88). Gibbon himself declared that his work described ‘the triumph of barbarism and religion’.” (pages 6-7)
Different standards of historical interest suggest the possibility of not only different histories—which, of course, have been written, and many of them—but also different conceptions of history.
Gibbon’s criteria that I quoted earlier for events that do not pass the threshold of materially chaing the fate of nations—“the same hostilities, undertaken without cause, prosecuted without glory, and terminated without effect”—constitute an the “ebb-and-flow” conception of history as applied to civilizations. What do I mean by an “ebb-and-flow” conception of history as applied to civilizations? It is often implied that civilizations have histories, whereas societies below the proper threshold of history merely experience events as an “ebb-and-flow” without any pattern or directionality. These societies are not civilizations, properly speaking, and it is for this reason that they are rightly passed over with little or no mention.
This idea that only civilizations have a history, properly speaking, is given one form by Hugh Trevor-Roper’s criterion of “purposive movement” as definitive of history:
“…history, I believe, is essentially a form of movement, and purposive movement too. It is not a mere phantasmagoria of changing shapes and costumes, of battles and conquests, dynasties and usurpations, social forms and social disintegration. If all history is equal, as some now believe, there is no reason why we should study one section of it rather than another; for certainly we cannot study it all. Then indeed we may neglect our own history and amuse ourselves with the unrewarding gyrations of barbarous tribes in picturesque but irrelevant corners of the globe: tribes whose chief function in history, in my opinion, is to show to the present an image of the past from which, by history, it has escaped; or shall I seek to avoid the indignation of the medievalists by saying, from which it has changed?”
This is from The Rise of Christian Europe (page 9) and Trevor-Roper made the same point in an interview. A 1992 paper by Finn Fuglestad, “The Trevor-Roper Trap or the Imperialism of History. An Essay,” takes up Trevor-Roper’s purposive movement criterion from the perspective of an Africanist. While much of this paper is taken up with some parochial concerns of African vs. European history, it has applications to Gibbon’s implicit criteria of the properly historical:
“I shall argue later that the very notion of ‘purposive-movement’ history is to my mind absurd. But first I wish to make it clear that I find any distinction between ‘barbarians’ and ‘non-barbrarians’ highly questionable. By accepting such a distinction one also accepts the establishment of a sort of hierarchy or ranking list between cultures and civilizations; that is, one transforms history into a sort of Championship or Olympic Games. The problem here is twofold: first, such a viewpoint of history hinders any attempt to understand and/or acquire insight into a society or civilization within the framework of its own values and notions. Second, once one begins to evaluate societies and civilizations the question becomes on which norms and values should such an evaluation be based? The answer is all too obvious: the norms and standards pertaining to the dominant culture or civilization of the time. And the dominant civilization has been for the last five hundred years or so—and still is, of course—that of the West. Finally, it is all too easy to dismiss phenomena one cannot make head or tail of—for instance, the past of cultures one has difficulty deciphering—by qualifying them as the ‘unrewarding gyrations of barbarous tribes’.”
In the same paper, Fuglestad introduces the concept of what he calls “ebb-and-flow” history:
“…the contention that only ‘purposive-movement’ history is ‘real’ history needs to be rejected. I feel strongly that the only acceptable definition of history is that it is the study of the past, any past, including, for want of a better term, ‘ebb-and-flow’ history. Everything (or at least nearly everything) that has happened in the past ought to be of equal importance to the historian since it all partakes of the experience of mankind. It is this experience in all its diversity which we need to unravel and to comprehend as far as possible—if, that is, we want to understand ‘how we came to where we are’ and what and where we are not.”
What I am suggesting is that Gibbon implicitly made a distinction between history that is purposive movement, which rises to the level of historical interest worth narrating, and history that is an ebb-and-flow movement, which does not rise to the level of historical interest. However—and this is an important qualification—Gibbon allows that both forms of history can apply to civilizations. Gibbon chooses to narrate the purposive movement of civilization, and he largely passes over the ebb-and-flow of civilizations.
With Gibbon we can reasonably ask whether the criterion of purposive movement is precisely applicable, as Gibbon chose for his grand theme the decline and fall of Rome. Gibbon was not writing about the purposive movement of Roman history, unless we count the dissolution of a purposive movement as part of that purposive movement. I think this would be a reasonably way to construe history, that is, that a civilization in decline exhibits purposive movement, since as a civilization is failing it usually attempts a number of rearguard actions intended to retain and maintain the viability of its purposive movement, and these attempts are not at an end until the civilization itself is at an end. Certainly the decline and fall of a civilization is a material change in history, and we could make a finer distinction between purposive movement and material change.
We also could make a distinction between narrow and wide conceptions of what constitutes purposive movement in history, with the narrow conception being applicable to what Spengler calls high cultures prior to their entering into the stage of civilizational decadence and ultimate dissolution. The wide conception of purposive movement, on the other hand, would be the entire history of a civilization, from its earliest inception, when its purposive movement is still inchoate, to its final extinction, as its purposive movement grinds down to a standstill.
If Gibbon had implicitly held the narrow conception of purposive movement in history, he would likely have taken up Livy’s theme of the origins of Rome. The failure and collapse of Rome was, after all, counter to the purposes of the Romans, and happened in the teeth of all efforts to save the empire. But if we look at Roman civilization from the outside, from this perspective we can see the decline and fall of Rome as coincident with the purposive movement of the growth of Christianity and the expansion of northern European peoples into the Mediterranean Basin. All of these historical movements are integrated in actual history and bound up in each other. We could tell this story as a sequence of overlapping and intersecting historical movements. Gibbon chose to make all of this a part of the grand purposive movement, in the wider sense I mentioned, of the decline and fall of Rome. And within this grand purposive movement of Roman history, Gibbon was willing to treat ebb-and-flow history brusquely, even when it was the ebb-and-flow of civilization, which could also be understood as periods of stagnation.
Gibbon, obviously, doesn’t use the language of either purposive movement or ebb-and-flow history. Both of these are ideas from the twentieth century that I am reading into Gibbon as a way to understand what he found to be of historical interest, that is to say, worth narrating. We can defuse some of the disagreements of what is of proper historical interest, that is, the scope of history, or what we might call proper historicity, by making appropriate distinctions, as I have been suggesting here. Better yet, beyond a mere distinction between purposive movement and ebb and flow history, we could formulate a taxonomy of histories that would include both of these, perhaps with these two constituting the end points of a continuum of histories that stretch from purposive movement at one end to ebb-and-flow at the other end.
A taxonomy of histories is already implicitly known to us. Since the late twentieth century, micro-history has played an increasing role in historiography. Few question the value of, and many recognize the insights gained by, the detailed examination of a given village, or a particular life in the past that happens to be well documented—and most lives in the past were not well documented. John Romer’s book and television series Ancient Lives brought to life the ordinary events in the lives of individuals who lived thousands of years ago. I don’t believe that Romer was aiming at micro-history, but there is a significant overlap between archaeology and micro-history. The evidence of the past uncovered by archaeology often documents the lives of humble people, though the fantastic finds of tombs filled with gold and jewels may receive far more attention. Archaeologists have largely embraced this historical miniaturism and they now sift the remains of earlier excavations, in which only treasures were sought, to find the small clues that allow for the reconstruction of the lives of ordinary people in the distant past.
Compared with this historical miniaturism, Gibbon presents a grand sweep of history, from the height of the empire to its final dissolution in 1453 AD with the fall of Constantinople to the Turks. This is what I called Gibbon’s civilizational perspective. We can identify even grander sweeps of history that have appeared since Gibbon’s time, especially in what has come to be called speculative philosophy of history as exemplified by Spengler and Toynbee. As we saw in the episode on Toynbee, he doesn’t limit himself to the decline and fall of one civilization, but maps out the panorama of the rise and fall of multiple civilizations over historical time. One could argue that this speculative philosophy of history passes a threshold that Gibbon did not cross, and for this reason we can call Gibbon’s work history, while the other work we could deny as being any kind of history. But we recognize, even in so saying, that Spengler and Toynbee have become stalking horses, and there are many other attempts to draw a larger historical picture than Gibbon, as in contemporary big history.
We could argue that micro-history falls below the threshold of proper historicity, and ought correctly to be understood as historical sociology. And we could argue, as above, that Toynbee is philosophy of history, or meta-history, and therefore not within the scope of proper historicity. Or we could accept that history ranges across the spectrum, but what distinguishes Gibbon’s history is that is the history of a civilization—or, at least, part of the history of a civilization. It isn’t the micro-history of one Roman city—though it might have been that if Gibbon had stuck with his original plan, later taken over by Gregorovius, of writing the history only of the city of Rome. And it isn’t an attempt at universal history, whether the universal history of Bossuet before Gibbon or the universal history of Toynbee after Gibbon. It is, as I said, a civilizational history.
Gibbon gives us the civilizational perspective on Rome and what we might call Roman-adjacent civilizations. Micro-history occurs on a scale below that of civilizational history, but it is still history. And the whole of human history is more than civilizational history, but it is still history. In my episode on Gregorovius I called this historical space between micro-history and big history meso-history, since it occurs somewhere near the middle of the scale of objects that might be of historical interest. Even within meso-history we can make distinctions of greater or lesser scope. Gibbon’s history branching through several closely related civilizations is near the higher end of the scale of meso-history, while Gregorovius’ history of Rome, being a little less comprehensive, is lower down the scale.
The meta-historical scale above the scope of Gibbon’s history verges on philosophy of history, as we see in the works of Spengler and Toynbee. Meso-history maybe philosophical as well. We saw in yesterday’s episode on Hume that the Enlightenment historians were sometimes called philosophical historians. We also can find warnings about reading any philosophy of history into Gibbon. For example, Paul Cartledge wrote: “Unhappily for those intellectual historians of today who wish to reconstruct or invent an elaborate Gibbonian ‘philosophy of history,’ Gibbon was not a systematic thinker.” It is true that Gibbon was not a systematic thinker, and the philosophy of history we would find in his work would not be a systematic philosophy of history.
We can also find claims that all history involves a philosophy of history. William Paton Ker wrote: “There is an implicit philosophy of history in every modern historian, even when like Gibbon or Macaulay he may seem for the time to have no interest beyond the narrative.” In my episode on Philosophy of History before Augustine I discussed the view of Hayden White that every history is predicated upon a philosophy of history, whether or not this philosophy is ever made explicit.
Gibbon was one of the great Enlightenment thinkers, and he brought his Enlightenment perspective to his civilizational history of Rome. In my episode of yesterday on Hume I said that Hume’s philosophy, also an artifact of the Enlightenment, implied a deflationary philosophy of history, and I quoted Gibbon on the role of miracles. In Gibbon’s essentially naturalistic narrative, even if guardedly naturalistic, he does exemplify the deflationary ideal by eliminating appeals to supernatural causes.
Insofar as Gibbon’s naturalism converges on our naturalism, we read him like a contemporary who shares much of our conceptual framework. For his reason, it is often difficult to see the problems with a perspective that we share with the author. As I mentioned in my episode on Marx, we don’t necessarily want to completely think our way into an author’s conceptual framework, as this eliminates any critical distance between ourselves and the work. But Gibbon has been around long enough for his critics to have seen the shortcomings of his work, at least, the shortcomings by their lights. Mark T. Gilderhus in History and Historians: A Historiographical Introduction (p. 39) wrote of the later response to Gibbon:
“Critics such as Robin G. Collingwood in the twentieth century attacked Enlightenment historians on the grounds that their insensitivity in effect violated the integrity of history. More specifically, they failed to empathize properly with the historical actors or comprehend their behavior accurately on their own terms. Rather, Enlightenment scholars indulged in exposés, reviling the past to obliterate and overcome it. Consequently, Collingwood denounced their writing as an enterprise gone fundamentally wrong. They had failed to carry out the historian’s primary task, that is, to elucidate the past, not merely to condemn it.”
I wouldn’t go so far as to say that Enlightenment history was fundamentally wrong, but its perspective does incorporate limitations and blindspots, as does any distinctive perspective. A history on the civilizational scale, like Gibbon’s, is not going to be focused on reenacting the thoughts of historical agents, which was Collingwood’s focus. This smacks too much of historical miniaturism. And Collingwood, on the other hand, isn’t going to be forced into making the kind of abstract conceptual distinctions among kinds of history that I have attributed to Gibbon. Enlightenment historiography is highly abstract, even artificial, and for that reason, distant and often unsympathetic, but by taking this grand civilizational perspective, it reveals dimensions of history that are not shown in as sharp relief by the methods of reenactment, historical sociology, or microhistory.

I've done stuff on the Igna and Igni races, fire and earth, so this week the Ora, water, have been getting some development and clarification since they are really weird.
The world of Circle 6 is fantasy, but there are elements of advanced, usually ancient, technology mixed in. Thus the Ora race are cyborgs. Their bones, flesh, muscles, brain, reproductive organs, hainails, and some other stuff are naturally; the rest is composed of billions (if not trillions) of nanobots. They form other organs like their eyes and can move around the body to form different things or even attempt to fix biological parts of the body. To the untrained eye an Ora lung might look biological but in reality it's just millions or so nanobots who have formed the shape and function of a lung, even as you touch it/them.
Ora are the "warrior" race of Circle 6. They were specifically designed to protect it from alien invaders. This has led to some interesting stuff in their weird life cycle. So when two Ora reproduce they aren't just exchanging DNA but their nanobots as well. As the two sets of nanobots interact they reproduce themselves, combining elements from both sets. Meanwhile a rudimentary biological foetus develops in the mother. These new combined nanobots flock to the foetus and form an egg around it. They are the only source of energy for the growing biological parts. So Ora parents are taking a part of themselves (some of their nanobots) that they will never get back to create a child. This is why Ora have children late (they are one of the longest lived races at about 100 years) and why they don't have many. So the egg spends a few months inside of the mother before plopping out.
After another few months the foetus's biological and nanobot aspects are in full harmony and it has developed what it needs to survive. The nanobots that formed the shell are utterly drained and destroyed. Ora babies can generally survive by themselves as soon as they break open their egg. These plump babies will crawl for a few days burning through fat and will then start walking to seek more energy, putting just about anything in their mouth. They will also look for shelter and water to start rudimentary water mani/magic. In the wild a baby would live like this for about a year before they hit a yet unnamed phase where their intelligence develops. So a 1 year old wild Ora baby is starting to make tools and hunt. Their body and brain develop at different rates leading to these yet unnamed phases that have cultural significance. By about 7 years old an Ora is physically an adult but it will take a few more years for them to mentally reach adulthood.
Of course there are very few wild Ora children running around. Ora parenthood is more a case of a child copying the adult. There isn't love as we know it involved. An Ora, their lover, and their children are much more a combat unit or squad than a family. There is really close comradery between them and a teacher student relationship, but not family love. When it comes to partners Ora look for someone who is like their opposite sex parent who are going to be very similar to each other. This is mainly defined by specialization. A child of Ora engineers is expected/highly likely to have children with other engineers and his/her family tree will show a lineage of engineers.
These families then group with other families to form "tribes" that can then form kingdoms etc. It's very easy for Ora to form large groups in a short time. Hierarchy and specialization is easily established. There are other factors as well. Ora can't lie to each other for example. This is based on visual recognition, make something look like an Ora and they won't be able to lie to it. So there is no backstabbing in Ora politics. While the Ora speak an archaic form of Circle 6's common language their language is also very simple and straight to the point to avoid confusion. They do have the more complex Dead Speak as well, but more on the dead later. Ora also enjoy singing and chanting.
In terms of more story specific details the Ora are the main enemy of the protagonist Rath in the story's first "book" when she's shipwrecked in Harrak. The area is somewhat Scandinavian and the Ora are a bit Viking-ish. They have enslaved the native races of Harrak for mining and farming while the Ora themselves, being warriors of course, watch over the slaves, make weapons to be shipped away, or are off as freedom fighters against the evil Empire of the Black Flame. There's a few things going on here. The Ora are warriors, not just in culture but instinct. Why would they farm or mine when someone else who isn't a natural warrior can do it? Secondly I'm discarding the trope of an honourable warrior race. Honour doesn't usually win wars, let alone the world ending wars the Ora originally designed for. In the general worldview of the story the Ora are the good guys, the current slaves would never have joined the fight against the Empire or worked themselves to death to dig up material to make weapons.
The more lore stuff (but still very story relevant) around the Ora is the Ora Wars. So Circle 6 is a disk surrounded by a wall of "ice" (not truly ice) that's full of ancient technology. The Ora were stored, frozen, in a section of the wall and defrosted. I've covered aspects of the Ora Wars before when I spoke about the Igna and as I think I said there the newly awakened Ora thought everyone else on Circle 6 were alien invaders before they realized their mistake after causing immense social upheaval and ending 1000's of years of peace. I think I worked out that the Ora Wars would have started a hundred or so years before Rath's time. This means that there are some old Ora (not that they get feeble old, they more suddenly die) who remember being defrosted.
There is a cultural malaise among the Ora due to the wars, due to their mistake. They attacked those they were supposed to defend. Put an Igna, Igni, Nena, and an Ora in a situation where one has to die and the Ora will always volunteer themselves first. It's in their nature. Even against the hated Empire who have genocided many Ora there is a slight sense of mourning that they have to fight them. As dangerous as the Empire is it's people aren't alien invaders. I guess this ties into death being really important to the Ora. Like real war in their culture there is no shameful or honourable deaths, there are only deaths. Ora live and breath war, they don't need as much moral boosting examples as other races to do it. Death is something to learn from and the Ora place a lot of importance on those who died to teach, even if they didn't mean it. Now this doesn't mean they are sombre warriors. Ora are probably the race that would produce the most sociopaths for example. They were utterly barbaric in the Ora Wars and took great pride and amusement in the carnage of total war and of course humour is a big part of war.

Newb here, can someone explain this to me please
If I add ash of war: Golden vow to this axe, it’s physical damage reduces to 109 + 9, and it gains 109 +5 holy damage? And this is because it starts scaling off faith? And why does it say str and dex go from D to E?
Sorry, it’s a tad confusing.

2024.05.08 20:09 hatrickpatrick Why are there seemingly so mamy on the pro-Pal side who are reLuctant or refuse to condemn Oct 7tH?

Lifelong pro-Palestinian activist and debator here, or at least when I say lifelong, I’m 34 and have been deeply passionate about the Palestinian cause since I was 11 or 12.
I don’t know if this is a social media thing, amplifying fringe voices, or the fact that fringe voices tend to shout the loudest and do so in a more disruptive manner so they become a lot more visible than their proportional level of support. But I feel like I see quite a lot of folks on my own side who are either reluctant to condemn the Oct 7th attacks, or outright support those attacks as a valid form of resistance.
I’m curious, where did this instinct come from and how prevalent would anyone reading this suggest it really is among pro-Palestinian people? I’ve always been of the view that in our current generation, regardless of the history and the actions of people long dead or retired, Israel’s continued settlement expansion and refusal to budge on the sovereignty of East Jerusalem were responsible for the collapse of the 2000 talks and the “parent” wrong which gave birth to the second intifada and the situation we have today. I feel like most pro-Palestinian folks agree on this. But just in my own view, an attack like Oct 7th which intentionally and explicitly targets innocent civilians in such a brutal and barbaric manner, rather than focusing on military or police targets, is inherently morally wrong regardless of provocation. I condemn it utterly and did at the time. Furthermore - and maybe this is because I’m Irish and Ireland tragically has a history of direct experience with this - it’s a gigantic strategic own goal. The sympathy of so much of the world lay with the Palestinians until that moment, but Hamas threw away so much goodwill by targeting innocent people instead of military. Ireland had a similar issue in the 1970s - a movement which initially formed to resist and avenge police and military brutality against civilian protesters threw away enormous amounts of goodwill when it started choosing random pubs, restaurants, hotels etc on the other side and blowing them up, indiscriminately targeting civilians of all ages and all races.
That’s obviously all just my opinion of things, and I’m probably more black and white than many in my assertion that knowingly and intentionally killing civilians to make a point or pressure a government is wrong (I’d condemn Hiroshima and Nagasaki as much as I’ve always condemned 9/11, etc) BUT I’m genuinely curious as to why so many on my side seem to feel differently.
Both in terms of my moral argument (killing innocent people and punishing them for their governments’ crimes is wrong, end of story) and my strategic argument (targeting civilians draws almost universal outrage, delegitimises the movement and throws away goodwill in both the eyes of the public and in diplomatic channels, as Israel is now discovering to their cost as outrage over Gaza continues to spread) - why do you think so many disagree and what would be their counter argument? If you personally disagree, which of the two arguments (moral vs strategic) is it that you disagree with, and why do you feel Oct 7th was either justified or strategically a clever move?
Not looking to pick an argument or vitriol with anyone who disagrees with my own premise, obviously - genuinely curious as to why the paradigm seems to have shifted so much in favour of defending what I’d consider indefensible, what calculations and principles are behind that shift in opinion, or, of course, am I wrong in perceiving this shift in opinions and in fact merely being duped by social media algorithms?

2024.05.08 14:34 churchoflogicalrea Gen Alpha will lead to the death of intellegence in society and genocide...or communism.

In WW2 the barbaric rule of the Nazis was popularisised by their ideology that justified their efforts to be against lesser races who were evil and stupid.
This is of course proporganda, but todays Ipad babies may grow up to accidently create a similar society and mindset. This is because their poor cognition will lead to them becoming abults who cant function: a defective population who can only comsume junk food content.
This will lead to widespread hatred, but becuase many will have known them as children and feel sympathy for them their wouldnt be any attacks against them...not yet at least. However the Higher Ups at big corpo will realise that this new generation is a perfectly manipulatable workforce provided they have comsumable content resulting in a lowering of employability standards and more workplace entertainment. This will initially be a GREAT thing, but:
Over time society will devolve into the ultimate shitwhole of mindless consumerism and low standards, with strange themepark-sweatshops becoming the norm while people choose to die or watch more junk food cotent. Child porn will become legalised and snuff films shall become a normalised genre ; the evidence of the formeris the normailsation of the sexulaisation of minors in anime and the latter being a result of the glorification of violece in media. The reasoning behind these illicit forms of entertainmet becoming accepted shall also be a cosequence of morality being overtaken by comsumerism.
In Afrcian countries this comsumer plague will be negated, with many free thinkers heading their. But the dicatorships that tend to pop up there will begin mass killing these migrants, although some places such as the ancient universities in Timbuktu will be all too happy due to them being well versed in studying philosophy for thousands of years.
But (this is where the Nazi Germany part comes in!) due to China having an isolated internet the brainrot content here will be less prevelant, and people migrating too it (to escape western degeneracy) will bring their Gen Alpha kids and relatives who will not fit into eastern workplace demands causing mass hatred and persecution of them. Considering the Chinese government in no stramger to genocide with what it is doing to Fu Lang Gong partitioners and Muslims, mass murder shall follow!
However! There is an alternate path this could take: corporations may not be able to fully exploit new gen brainrot becuase of how may people like Youtubers and teachers raise awarwness of it, Gen Z will look at the adult ipad babies and realise they have a massive resposibilty to truly stop comsumerism leading to socialist uprisings that could be taken advantage of by leftist politicians to create a commie worldwide state, for better or (likely) worse.
...and thats how Skibidi Toilet shall end mankind.

2024.05.07 18:29 Terrible_Possession6 Fraudulent Trading Platforms - Dreamloftydreams.com

I joined a Whatsapp investment group ( Chris Wealth Investing ) that the Professor " Chris Johnson" teaches folks on how to invest in Crypto currency through Contract trading. So to invest we had to open an account on the Trading platform DREAMLOFTYDREAMS.COM. So on the platform we invest from Bitcoin to other currencies. The other currencies we invested in were M, FT, AOT, KOC, NOV, OIT, PXT, SPL which were not found elsewhere. I asked them how come i did not see the currencies on Coin base and they told me that coin base was not that flexible and i bought the lie.
The leader informed the group that there were "Whales" in the currencies who are able to wipe out your account through contract trading. They said we had to increase our funds and to be able to survive an Whale attacks or from people with alot of money. Little did i know the "False Professor and "False group members" were in it. As the trading signal were released on whether to buy or sell the currencies the false professors and group members either traded the exact opposite causing some members to have their account wiped out. I was wiped out three times. They developed a Whale Program where members are guaranteed profit through investing:
If you invest $100,000 you are guaranteed $250,000 in 20 days. (Fish Group)( These seemed real as the false members kept posting all of the profits in the daily transactions) If you invest $200,000 you are guaranteed $500,000 in 20 days. (Dolphin group) If you invest $500,000 you are guaranteed $1,500,000 in 20 days. And more groups like that.
So i build my account to over $200,000 but on one occasion we had a "Whale Attack" that liquidated $84,000. I was supposed to join the Dolphin group but after losing the money i could not. I tried joining the fish group but they told me that the group was full. They told me they'll reimburse the loses if i came up with $50,000 and they will come up with $50,000. I told them i was not able to come up with the $50,000.
The kicked me out of the Whatsapp group and when i went to withdraw $104,000. They blocked my withdrawals. Am completely unable to withdraw the $104,000 after multiple attempts.
I believe its a Fraudulent Trading platform which is controlled by the Whatsapp group which makes it very detrimental to people finances.

2024.05.07 04:54 Pizzlewinks The truth about the propaganda war against Israel

It seems the allegations against Israel are becoming increasingly bogus and I started to recognize a pattern:
The things Israel is being accused of can factually be attributed to most Islamic countries in a significantly better way. Here are three mainstream examples and how they clearly fit better to Arab States instead of Israel.
  1. Apartheid State
Its just a blatant lie. Muslims living in Israel have every right Jews have. They can vote, be elected as political officials, wear hijabs and whatnot, pray openly towards Mecca.
(Palestinians in some parts of the West Bank underly stricter safety measures when crossing into Israel, mainly due to past terror attacks that killed many Israeli civilians. Thats not Apartheid and goes only for Non Israeli citizens. Every other country proceeds partly harsher with foreigners.)
Most Arab countries inhabit not one singly Jewish person. Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen and the list goes on - all of them have now expelled all Jews that lived there, even if born and raised, and persecuted them. Today, if a Jew openly showed his faith in one of those countries, chances are they wouldn’t survive that. That is blatant Apartheid.
  1. Genocide
Its a blatant lie and reversal of the truth. Israel attacked Gaza militarily after the barbaric October 7th attack on Israeli civilians by Hamas. Hamas is intentionally hiding in heavily civilian populated areas such as hospitals and schools and shooting rockets towards Israel from within these public facilities. Hamas is intentionally and strategically provoking civilian deaths on their own side. Israels strikes on Gaza always target specific terroristic targets but have killed thousands of civilians, due to Hamas perfidious war plan. Nevertheless Israel performs many acts to minimize collateral casualties (evacuations through leaflets, text messages, roof-knocking etc.) Also Gazas population has skyrocketed in the past decades. There are absolutely no signs that Israel is trying to perform genocide or ethnic cleansing to the Palestinian people, especially underlined by the fact Israel could wipe Gaza off the map pretty easily.
Leading me to my counter example: Hamas, Hezbolla, Houthi, Iran. All of their charters and public agenda prioritize the eradication of the State of Israel and the murder of every Jew (and every other none muslim person too btw). Hate against the Jews is taught in pre schools and shown in children’s cartoons. Today. The killing of Jews earns you paradise and many virgins in heaven and your family financial support from the country. That is open and blatant genocide. Not successful but very outright.
  1. Occupation
Israel was founded in 1948 as an official country by the UN. There were negative votes by many countries but a partition plan reached a majority. The main driver to support the creation of a Jewish State and Zionism by many free countries was to give Jews a place to be safe from something like the Holocaust that just ended 2 years prior. Israel with its geographical position has been mentioned clearly and repeatedly in both the Bible and the Quran. Per these books the area was promised to the Jews as their holy land. The Palestinian side, not agreeing to the partition and their assigned piece of land, which was a little larger in size than Israels piece attacked Israel along with multiple other Arab countries surrounding Israel the same day the UN confirmed the creation of Israel and declared open war. Israel won within months and took land as is custom when you are declared war and win. Yes some Palestinian people were expelled in the process. Jews were expelled for thousands of years prior to that one event from virtually every place they stayed. Calling it the Nakba and playing victim when you literally had your own real country called Palestine can’t support a real argument for an occupation. It supports the argument however that Palestinians don’t want their country, but rather their country without Israel. From the river to the Sea. Apart from the fact that Israel is a tiny Mini-State and the Arab World hundreds of times larger in terms of area and that Muslims have violently occupied vast lands for centuries and Israel or Jews not so much, Israel today is a peaceful and thriving society while Gaza has not achieved much more than murderous terror using their hundreds of billions of dollars in aid over the years for - trying to wipe Israel off the map and occupying that land.
What would another example be?
