That was 6 months ago. I was new and not setup for success in the role. 3 people quit before they fired me. One raged quit. I was the junior tech, and in a matter of two months ended up being the senior tech with only 6 months on the job. One department asked me to give our an already “looking for an excuse to leave” client some information, and another department told me, that it was the wrong information, BUT AFTER I have given the client the information. Client left, and threatened to sue. Other clients were also jumping ship.
I took sometime to lick my wounds and started studying for a project management cert. The cert turned out to be too boring for me, so I’m taking a course in cloud administration course, now. Which is more in-line with my 15 years career in helpdesk support and systems administration.
But how do I even explain the reason for firing me? Does anybody have any idea? How do I explain the lag in employment, particularly, on the IT field? How do I move forward from here? I have never been fired for “cause” before. This is all new.

I yelled and woke with a start. Sweat dripped down my face. My breathing was hard and desperate. I could have sworn I had just been falling. The stickiness of sleep meddled with the cogs of my mind. Slowly my eyes adjusted to the gloom of my bedroom and I found myself alone, safe and warm. No danger here. My heart rate slowed and I chuckled nervously. Soon all fear had seeped from my mind and all memory of my dream had faded. I rolled out of bed and shivered. Quickly I pulled on a sweater and put on my furry slippers. It was cold in this cabin in the middle of the forest. Although internal plumbing and an electric generator had been added, there was still no central heating. This did not bother me much because I always enjoyed having an excuse to light the fire in the living room. I absolutely loved traditional fireplaces.
I was whistling happily in the kitchen, sipping on a glass of cold water as I poured fresh coffee beans into my electric grinder. The sound and smell of coffee being ground always left me feeling content. As my coffee brewed in my French press I cracked two eggs into a bowel and began to whisk. Fifteen minutes later I carried a steaming hot cheese omelet and large mug of coffee out onto my front veranda. I stood in the open doorway, surveying the beauty of the outdoors in the early morning light. The air was cold and fresh; pregnant with complex mixtures of pine and lavender scents. I looked up to see the sky was a deep blue and devoid of all clouds. The thin, dark silhouettes of the trees that surrounded the cabin stood silent and ominous in the soft half-light of the morning. White coats of frost sparkled and melted on the grass as the sun climbed and brightened. I could hear the distant sound of the stream and the call of morning birds.
I sighed deeply with satisfaction and sat down on my wooden chair. This is what I loved more than anything. More than the city that bustles and bursts with busy human lives. More than squeezing myself between strangers on the underground train. More than the sickening smell of the streets and the soulless lack of any natural sounds. In the city there were no crickets, no owls, no frogs. Out here there was an abundance of beauty. The trees were so patient and still. So very different from the rushed, ill-mannered commuters I had as my usual morning partners. I definitely preferred the trees. I took another deep breath. I blew on the steam that rose from my coffee mug and sipped cautiously. The coffee was rich and delicious and scalding hot. Perfect. I began to eat my omelet letting the serenity of nature continue to wash over me. My mood had not been so elated for many months and I was seriously thinking that I should move here full-time. Currently I was working as an English teacher and had decided to come out here to work on my novel and take a break from the city. From my life. Once my excellent breakfast was complete I walked back inside and decided to start a fire to warm up the cabin. As I stooped to check the small wicker basket near the fireplace, that should contain the dried firewood, my eyebrow arched when I found the basket empty. Huh? I could have sworn it was half-full yesterday. Puzzled but not at all alarmed I picked up the basket. Soon I put on my large, worn black coat and made my way outside.
The frosted ground crunched under my large leather boots as I waded through the woods. Finding dry branches for the fire would be fairly difficult at this time of day as most of the ground was damp by now. However, my plan was just to dry them out in the oven before I used them. After spending a few minutes stooping to inspect sticks of various sizes and dampness I finally filled the basket. “Ok, time to go home.” I muttered eagerly as I rubbed my hands together. The air was still cold enough to make my breath visible and I rubbed my hands together. Suddenly I stopped. My eyebrows furrowed. I did not recognize where I was. But how? I had been exploring the woods for days now and not one time had I gotten lost.
My eyes darted back and forth and my head swiveled in confusion. Very soon a creeping panic began to climb from my stomach up into my lungs. My heart began to thump loudly. I looked up at the sun, the voice of my old man ringing in my mind, “Learn to navigate by the stars and sun and you’ll never lose your way”. I smiled, remembering his warm eyes and loud laughter. I missed him. I closed my eyes, concentrating. “Ok, that must be East, so that means I should walk…” I stretched out my arm and hand, index finger pointed. I turned on my heel. “North. That way.”
After a few moments I found my path blocked by a sudden sheer drop. I was facing an enormous quarry. My face blanched. “What… where the hell did this come from?” Again, panic seeped into my blood. “There aren’t any bloody quarries around here!” I moved forward to peek over the edge and peered down. The drop must be at least fifteen meters! I looked from left to right and saw no stairs or bridges. How the hell was I supposed to get across? My confusion grew and grew. Suddenly I froze. There, lying at the very bottom of the quarry, just near the cliff’s bottom, was a mangled body. The light in the sky was still too young to properly illuminate the quarry’s depths, but I could tell it was a body! My eyes bulged and my mouth opened wide with astonishment. “Jesus! Hello? Are you okay down there?” I yelled. Nothing but cold silence pressed against my ears. Suddenly I noticed a path that I had not seen before. It started to my right and wound down the slope before me. Quickly I started hurrying down towards the person; maybe I could still help? Soon I was at the bottom and I ran up to the body that lay still on the ground. As I got closer and the sun grew brighter I stopped dead. The body that lay crumpled at my feet was – me. “No way. There is just absolutely no way!” I shouted. I trembled as I took a step backward. My foot slipped on a large stone and I felt myself begin to fall to the ground.
Suddenly I yelped and my legs kicked out. I blinked in the sudden darkness and found myself on my sofa in the cabin’s living room. “What the hell? It was just a dream?” I said out loud as I sat up. I felt the softness of the couch cushions beneath me, I could smell the citrus scents leftover from the wash I’d given them recently. I stood up, my breathing still fast. The large windows showed a stormy afternoon. Rain pelted the glass heavily and the wind howled loudly. “What the hell? It was just a dream?” I repeated. I checked my watch. It was nearly two o’clock in the afternoon. I raked my brain, trying to figure out what was happening. But the details of my dream were fading. “I was in the forest looking for firewood. Then I found that body in that quarry.” It had been so real. I felt quite disoriented. Was I truly awake now? Or still asleep? And that body? What had been so terrible about it? The dream had already seeped away. I couldn’t remember.
Still confused I made my way quickly towards the front door. Just as I opened it there was a deafening peal of thunder and a bright fork of lightning lit up the darkling sky. My mouth dropped open. There, just beyond the veranda, as if it had always been there, was the quarry. That cliff! I closed my mouth. “But… how…” Ignoring the icy rain, I walked towards the edge and once again peeked over. In the cold light of another flash of lightening and rumble of thunder, I saw my own body twisted and broken on the ground below. I gasped. My mind reeled. My heart fluttered. “What is going on?” I yelled looking around for some sort of explanation. When I looked back down again my face turned white. The body, my body, was gone. Suddenly I felt the eyes of a stranger on my back. A feeling of dread crept up my spine. A twig snapped. I spun around.
I stood face to face with my shadow. But he did not look like me. Not exactly. Darkness coated his body like a skintight suit and I could not tell what he was wearing. He may have even been naked for all I know. I could see most of his face and hair, but his eyes were cloaked entirely in semi-circles of shadow which fell below each of his brows. He seemed utterly unconcerned about the storm. “You poor thing. You poor, wretched thing.” When he spoke, his voice was not mine. It was deep and commanding, yet gentle. His words came out slow and calm, almost lulling, “I caught you as you fell. You can be at peace forever. But you must choose now.” He stretched out a tenebrous hand and pointed toward the edge of the cliff. Suddenly I noticed something new appear in his hands. It was a book. It was my book. The one I had been writing. Had I already finished it? Or had I just started?
He turned to one of the middle pages and read, “‘Life is the antithesis of peace. Death is the antithesis of suffering.’” He snapped the book closed and turned again to face me, “How trite. Yet, so often the plainest truths are. All you want is peace, is it not? You are right in thinking that life can never provide this.” A cold smile curled his lips. “Even the living forests you so admire are crawling with suffering and conflict. Even the trees that appear so peaceful, so still, are wordlessly fighting each other for light. Racing against each other to claim their own space. It is the nature of the living to struggle.” Confusion fought with terror in my mind. I stammered. “I…I don’t understand. What is this place? Who are you?” Suddenly the man robed in darkness leapt at me and clasped my wrist, “You know who I am”. Small crimson lights flared to life like ignes fatui in the depths of his sockets. He began to pull me towards the edge. “No! Wait!” I shouted, digging my heels into the wet grass. But he was too strong. He snarled, “Isn’t this what you wanted?” and before I could stop myself I was crying from desperation. Then with a strength that could not be human he lifted me above his head, and threw me over the side of the quarry. Lightning flashed as the air rushed through my hair. I screamed as I plummeted to my death.
I yelled and woke with a start. I heard the soft beeping of monitors. I felt the scratchy linens of a hospital bed beneath me. Pain followed swiftly and exploded through my limbs. My voice was croaky and dry as I spoke, “Where…what the hell…what happened?” A nurse rushed to my side. “It’s alright love, you’ve ‘ad a bit of a tumble. Doctor’s got you all sorted. Just rest now”. Her voice was warm and comforting, like a cup of tea.
My memory returned to me slowly. My family did not own any cabin in the forest. The day of the accident I had been jogging in the woods and took my usual route near the abandoned quarry. I jogged far, leaving the city limits. As I stood at the edge of that quarry, panting, my sadness hanging on me heavily, I had, for a moment, contemplated jumping. I had thought about it often before. As I stared down, I imagined my broken body at the bottom of the cliff. Then, like in all my low moments, I let the cold inhumanness of the universe fill me up.
With my eyes closed all I could hear was my mother crying over my father’s corpse. All I could hear were the endless calls from the funeral home asking for their money. All the constant knocking of debt collectors on our door. All I could see were the endless medical bills flooding the postbox. All I felt was loneliness. A horrible, unrelenting, unsolvable loneliness. I had no great love, no amazing career, and my writing would never be good enough to publish. All I could feel was the gaping hole my father had left behind. It hurt. For just a moment I convinced myself I did not belong here anymore. My lips trembled. I walked right up to the edge. I felt my sadness swell in my chest. I clenched my fists tightly. I imagined taking a single step forward. It would be so easy. I imagined the air rushing past me. Falling to my doom. I imagined the horrible pain of the impact. But I also imagined the peace that would come after. A peace I craved. I imagined a picturesque cabin in the woods. A beautiful fireplace. A shelter from the city. A place where I could rest. It was in that moment of contemplative despair, before I could fully commit to the act, that the old unstable ground of the quarry crumbled beneath my feet and I had slipped from the edge and fell. Only the shadows were there to catch me.
Recovery was slow. My mother and sister came to visit me multiple times and made the stay at the hospital bearable. How many dreams had I had? How much had I awoken and then re-awoken? Could I be sure I was truly awake now? As I pondered this I tried to remember. But all I could recall was that very last dream. Those dark horrible eyes. The terror of that very last fall. In that moment, I had realized what I wanted. Now I felt rejuvenated in a way I had not felt for many years. The exhaustion of my spirit had finally been ameliorated. I actually looked forward to getting out of bed. I actually wanted to go to school again. My passion for teaching was reignited. Soon after my recovery I even managed to get my novel published but did not make much money.
Many years have passed since my fall and I’m in my 60s now and retired and have never married. I now know that those dreams were not just dreams. That phantom I confronted has remained with me. Whenever the stresses of life pile up and I become fatigued, he comes to me. He still waits for me. He is real. I see his eyes covered in shadow. Tiny pinpricks of red-light flicker therein. At first, I only saw him rarely; glimpses in dreams. As time went on and I grew older and weary of the world once more I began to see him in the corner of my room every night. What’s worse was that in those moments when I feel the lowest I find myself craving the solitude of that cabin. The peace it brought with it. All this I craved despite the price.
Last week I attended my mother’s funeral. It was a small affair, most of her friends having died many years before. I saw my sister there with her husband and children. They are so happy and full of life. I feel a pang of jealousy but also relief. My life was always to be a solitary one. My sister and I cried during the service. When we chatted later we tried in vain to comfort each other. I returned alone to my home in London while she returned home with her husband and children to Edinburgh. I missed her a great deal too. I often thought about our growing up together.

How had I not noticed before? Perhaps it was a kindness. Gooseflesh runs down my neck as I see him standing insidiously in my cold bedroom. He is near the edge of my bed now. He is patient and has respected my choice so far. Nevertheless, he holds out that same revolver. That same noose. That same dagger. I tremble with fright because I know I will not be able to resist him much longer. Perhaps soon I’ll know if this was all a dream too.

~ General Recommendations (All Consoles) For Anyone Who Can't Decide ~

First off, I won't recommend big or famous games like Final Fantasy or Persona, this is more for lesser know, hidden gems, or just games where it's hard to find someone talking about them.

This one is really hard to explain through words alone, but just in case, the VC series is a World War 2 military setting story, where you act as the lead of a squad and take mission to drive back the enemy. The story is drama heavy and the gameplay is tactical turn-based, but it's mixed with real-time third person shooter.
You can also make your own army by recruiting different types of solders, training them and upgrading their gear. From rifles to tanks, this is a game you have to experience to understand.

[Atelier Ryza]

A great and fun series that really can't be summed up in a short description. So to give a more detailed explanation and to save on save; if you're interested in this series, then check this "Where to start" thread about the series:

[WitchSpring R]

If you're a fan of the Atelier series, or just want to play a really well made and wholesome turn-based JRPG, then this is an easy choice. A great game with many optional bosses, dungeons to explore, and pets to collect and even use as mounts. The story is very well paced and always keep the story moving forward that it won't take you 20 to 27 hours to finish, or a bit longer depending how much of side content you'll go for. But above all, the main character is loveable and so are the supporting case.
The story isn't deep or complex, but also it's not as chill or relaxing as an Atelier series. There are stakes and there are a lot of plot twists, but it is all well done for an indie developer.

[SD GUNDAM G Generation Cross Rays]

You want a Tactical Mecha game focused on the Gundam universe, but mainly the AU era, with great graphics/animation, crazy amount of customization and days worth of playtime ? That's a very specific request, but here you go.
Cross Rays brings you amazing Metal on Metal smack down! with a huge (and I mean huge) list of Mechs to develop, evolve, capture, fuse, exchange, and unlock throughout a long and satisfying story campaign, and a customization system deep and varied enough to lose days of your life on. You can even customize your original characters, and even choose the OST for each individual attack for each mech.
With multiple difficulties from the get go, and more unlocked once you finish the game, a full playthrough (not 100%) just through the story missions, is easily 100+ hours, but since the game is built on a missions based system, where you can choose to play any story at any time and switch from series to another at your will, you can at your own pace, and there is no need to finish everything since because you can simply stop when you have had enough.
If you're looking for a deep tactical combat, this isn't it, but if you're looking for a trip through some of the best stories in the Gundam universe, and one of the best Gundam/Mecha games with fantastic animations and deep and expansive customization, this is it. And now, it's Dirt Cheap for the amount of content it has ($9.99)

[LIVE A LIVE]

The original SNES game is already a classic game in the genre, and this remake elevated it even higher. Great animation, fun combat system, add great voice acting, 8 main characters to choose from, each in their own time period, from the stone age, to futuristic space age. A true gem of the past that has been polished and is now shining than ever before.
Finally, the music. The reason I left this to the last is because if you are someone who loves JRPG soundtracks, this game is a MUST play, forget the graphics, forget the story, forget the gameplay. The music in this is AMAZING! It alone is worth the full price of the game let alone the now that it's on sale.

[Legend of Mana Remaster]

A Fantastic game in everything except it's combat, which is average. Though with this remaster, you can even turn off combat any time you want. The remaster in itself is great, polishing up the visuals and adding a ENTIRE orchestral version for each track in the game, and this is a game with an amazing soundtrack by Yoko Shimomura. So now you can switch between the original OST and the new orchestral one at any time.
The game follows an open-world concept with lots of freedom and giving you the choice on where to place each city/kingdom/dungeon on the map, and depending on how you do it, you'll unlock better weapons, items, quests, and so on.
It's a great game that you need to experience to know how good it is.

[Ys series]

This is a case of a whole series is filled with great games, it's really hard to go wrong here.
But if you're going to choose one, then this one is an easy pick. Fantastic soundtrack ? check! Great Smooth Action gameplay ? check! Dogi the wall breaker ? check! Base building and crafting ? check! and check! So if you're looking amazing music while you hack and slash your way through monsters and bosses, then Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA is easily your go to game.

Disclaimer: So, long, rambly-essay post incoming. I have an essay due on Friday, and instead, I'm spending time writing this post, but regardless, here it goes.
TLDR: Every single game in the series is so varied from one another, that the tone, aesthetics, writing, and even gameplay can barely even be properly compared. Fallout is the only series I am aware of that differs so broadly in even its main title games, that any entrypoint into the series will put you at odds with other games into the series.
Rambly context: I got into the series 2 years ago. I had seen a friend running around Helios One while in a discord call with me, and as he had always talked up the game (and joined an ARMA unit that is based on the NCR), my interest was piqued and only a few months later, I started with Fallout New Vegas. I had not played an RPG before, nor had I been interested in the subject. But a fire was lit when I finished that game, so much so, that I immediately did a second playthrough. Following that, I bought Fallout 4, 3, 1, 2, and 76 in that order. Having played New Vegas, I thought I knew what I was getting into with these games.
I was wrong.
I first started with Fallout 4. I found the story...underwhelming, having just come off of New Vegas, but I had a blast running around the Commonwealth regardless. Power Armour felt like Power Armour! I could actually shoot NPCs, the gunplay felt smooth, the graphics were, comparatively, AMAZING. The Radio had an incredible soundtrack! There was so much to do, so many enterable buildings, so many nooks and crannies, I really enjoyed the game.
Next I played Fallout 3. I recognise now, in hindsight, that I should not have played the games in this order. By playing Fallout 3 last, after New Vegas and 4, I had unintentionally stunted it. Having said that...
Fallout 3 was a buggy, lackluster game that dyed my eyes green. The story, for what it was, was...adequate. Had I not had Broken Steel, it would've been abysmal. The gunplay was awful, you couldn't even ADS. And yet, it did do some things well. I enjoyed the almost "dice-roll" skill checks, it felt as though a tabletop game had come to life on the PC. I enjoyed the attention to detail in set design, the environmental storytelling, the gameplay loops where I have to use metro tunnels as a low-level in order to evade Super Mutants and Enclave soldiers was an incredible way to do it. The random encounters were awesome as well, I remember being a low-level in a ruined DC neighbourhood when suddenly a Vertibird descends, and out dismounts two ENCLAVE soldiers in Power-Armour and a Deathclaw, gunning straight for me. I ran, turned the corner and found myself surrounded by Centaurs. I enjoyed it.
Then I played Fallout 1. Absurdly different, even from it's most similar 3D brethren, New Vegas. The writing was incredible, the dialogue, the diversity of options on how to approach quests, the game felt like a horror game. As a terrified Vault Dweller, I refused to disclose anything to anyone about my quest until I was close to finishing it. The Master was horrifying. Nightkin, the atmospheric music, all of it together, made it the best Fallout game I've ever played.
But again. It was so different, even from New Vegas, a game that is often praised in the same breath as each other. It's isometric, it's turn based, it's point and click effectively, encounters which I would've...frustratingly been able to fight my way out of in a 3D game turned into me being "CRITICALLY HIT FOR 312 DAMAGE". It turns into being even more of a "electronic board game" than Fallout 3 was, with effectively blind dice rolls and what have you.

Analytical Part: I write this post due to the recent debating, arguing, petty squabbles, shit-flinging nerdfests that have happened since the launch of the TV series. A series which, I'm sure, brought so many people into the fandom, which, I might add, welcome here. So what am I trying to say, besides potentially adding more fuel to the fire with my descriptions of Fallout 3 and maybe 4?
Every game is so, inexplicably different. And therein lies the problem. The problem that has launched so many squabbles and shit-flinging memes, posts, arguments, comment threads, etc. That is: FALLOUT is such a conglomerate of different games, that the series itself has little to no semblance of identity with itself, besides being in the same universe.
Looking at Fallout 4 on the Steam Charts right now, it is sitting 9th right now, though I have previously seen it as high as 3rd. What games are near it? We have: GTA V, Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, Hearts of Iron, etc. etc.
When I buy a GTA game, be it San Andreas, III, Vice City, 4 or V, what am I going to get? A crime sandbox game with an overarching story, filled with wacky moments, Quests that would make Hollywood blush, and an emphasis on the vehicles.
When I buy a Call of Duty game, what am I going to get? It's going to be an FPS game with intense moments, bombastic set pieces, an enthralling multiplayer mode, and just generally being some badass soldier killing enemy soldiers by the hundreds.
When I buy a Fallout game, what am I going to get?
I'm not quite sure. It could be a complex, well-written, isometric RPG that feels as though it is a digital board game. Or it could be a combat heavy, FPS, Looter-shooter with RPG elements. Or it could be a mixture between the two. Or it could be neither (See Shelter).
My takeaway is this: This series is marked by so many differences between the games, that it is impossible to say what truly MAKES a Fallout game. Yes, they all have RPG elements, but they all handle like completely different beasts.
And this is the biggest problem right now with the community; there is no such thing as a 'quintessential fallout game'. So whatever game happens to be your entry point into the series, THAT DEFINES WHAT FALLOUT MEANS TO YOU.
If I enter at Fallout 4, my impression is that Fallout is a fast-paced, action game with an interactable story and decision making. If I enter at Fallout 1, my impression is that the series is a dark, gritty, almost horror-esque isometric RPG that relies heavily on writing in order to be worthwhile.
So which is right? What IS Fallout? In my opinion, none of them are right. Because as the series goes on, it changes more and more. Does that mean that we should treat the originals as "THE" Fallout games, because they were first? No. Does that mean that as the series changes, becomes more BSG, more like Skyrim and Starfield, those sorts of games define Fallout? No, I don't believe so either.
So what's the answer? I'm not sure. As the series grows and changes, I struggle to make predictions as to where it is headed. The next game could be New Vegas 2 in terms of writing and gameplay. Or it could Fallout 76*2. Or it could even be Fallout 2² .
This series will change forever I think. I don't think we will ever get such a thing defined. But what will not change?
War. War never changes.

Someone said to me on another subreddit that Carl Sagan's nuclear winter theory is flawed, and that nuclear winter itself is fundamentally impossible.
According to Sagan, the city and forest fires caused by nuclear war would create so much smoke, that would be lofted up into the upper-atmosphere, where it would be heated by the sun so that it remains in the atmosphere for years on end, that most, if not all sunlight would be blocked out worldwide, causing a new ice age, and crop failures/food chain collapse that would cause the famine deaths of (at least) 90% of the entire world's population.
Even after the particulates dissipate from the atmosphere, since the ozone layer is gone, you can suffer extreme sunburn and eye damage/blindness from the unfiltered UV rays from the sunlight.
This has been debated by scientists and experts for decades, and some people think that this scenario is scientifically impossible.

Hi guys, I, 24(M), with education background of M.com and DTL, currently working in Account's department of an MNC from Tier 1 city, would like to ask to ask I can apply for CMA or not.
One of my seniors from the company advised me to peruse CA, but it would not be feasible due to the articleship. The reason why I am considering CMA is due to the exception of the articleship.
I am aware that this course is not easy, but if it guarantees better scope in the future at this age, then I wouldn't mind pursuing it.

I just rediscovered this passage in Chapter 6, and I'd like everyone to just take a moment to appreciate the incredible amount of foreshadowing that is going on here. This is at Sir Walter Pole's house, when Mr Norrell is going to visit him:

The walls were hung with a series of gigantic paintings in gilded frames of great complexity, all depicting the city of Venice, but the day was overcast, a cold stormy rain had set in, and Venice — that city built of equal parts of sunlit marble and sunlit sea — was drowned in a London gloom. Its aquamarine-blues and cloud-whites and glints of gold were dulled to the greys and greens of drowned things. From time to time the wind flung a little sharp rain against the window (a melancholy sound) and in the grey light the well-polished surfaces of tulipwood chiffoniers and walnut writing-tables had all become black mirrors, darkly reflecting one another. Been a while since I watched the live-play, but I'm trying to map out the interplay between the factions and how to undermine each faction as the players grow close to them. I know a few basic things:
Hooded Lanterns

• Are trying to restore a monarchy (it's a fantasy world so players might not care, but in real life monarchies aren't the best form of government)
• Elias assassinated his liege Mannfred - stain on his honour, could be used to throw his motives in question.
• Don't really have the means to fix the city themselves - no Argonath to burn away the delerium, no city-wide Prismatic Barrier to contain it, no Sacrament to live in peace with it.

Amythest Academy

• Don't actually want to restore Drakkenheim, want to turn it into a delerium farm.
• Some of them, exemplified by Ryan, kinda want to overthrow the edicts and start owning land and titles again.

Falling Fire

• Lucretia's end goal involves letting the planet and everyone on it die in the hope that spreading gold delerium throughout the universe will do "something" to stop normal delerium from destroying the rest of the planets.
• It is literally a cult (but I don't remember them doing nasty cult behaviour like blackmail and draining people of money and all that?)

Silver Order

• If they become the dominant power they'll probably turn Westemar into a vassal state of Elyria and maybe start a war.
• Anti-magic, so if they get in power they
• Want to burn Drakkenheim down before it is rebuilt (not that bad? It's clear the delerium can't just be magically removed from the city and leave the rest of the city intact)

Queen's Men

• It's a bunch of criminals who just want to loot, rob and pillage the city and anyone who enters it. They have no way or intention of fixing anything.

The world spun. Not just around Sustain, but inside her head. Groaning, she forced her eyelids open, the once-brilliant display of her mech's cockpit now a shattered, sparking mess. Her ears rang, a constant whine battling the dull throb of her skull.
Panic clawed its way up her throat. The battle... she lost. Her mech, a twisted mockery of what it once was, hung limply in the grip of another. A monstrous war machine, its dull green paint job streaked with oil and ash, loomed over her. Her breath hitched, her Dad’s face the only thing she was able to picture.
This was it. Capture. Or worse.
Suddenly, the enemy mech twitched, its heavy attention shifting away from her. A streak of blue light lanced across its bulky torso. Sparks showered. The enemy machine bellowed, a digitized roar of fury as it tried to swivel, target the attacker.
Too slow. Another bolt of energy, precisely aimed this time, punctured a joint. The enemy mech staggered, roaring, the crushing grip on Sustain's machine loosening.
Her ruined mech crashed to the scorched ground, sending a shockwave through her battered body. Pain lanced from ankle to skull, a vicious reminder she wasn't out of this yet. The enemy mech fell onto the feet of hers, shaking her battered body around once more. The headache was simply brutal. But at least she was alive, and presumably safe.
Had Churk and Jac returned for her?
She might have been too harsh in her mental estimates of the Algeen’s.
With a grinding screech, metal tore from metal. Sustain groaned as her ears turned the sound into torturous white noise. The front panelling of her mech's cockpit was wrenched away in a shower of sparks. Churk's mech hovered in the opening. Unless of course some other Tide mech had decided to save her, but she very much doubted that.
Churk spoke through the loudspeaker of his machine, his voice a warbling croak. Less like a frog and surprisingly more like a bird call, at least to Sustain’s untrained ears. Her neural link had performed an emergency shutdown after being overloaded by the electrical smoke and the damage to her machine. Had she not been in a combat zone, it would have been illegal for her to reboot the delicate brain interface so soon. But she did.
The headache lessened slightly, the pressure against her eyes fading away, and Churk’s voice filled her understanding once more.
"You alright? Nothing broken? Your machine is toast." Churk said, his eyes filled with concern.
"Just my pride." Sustain managed a weak grin.
"Humans." Churk scoffed, Sustain’s grin became just a little bit more vivid. Now he was getting it.
Effortlessly, Churk's mech reached into the wreckage. He scooped her up in one fluid motion, the strength and gentleness of the gesture momentarily erasing the brutal battleground around them. Churk cradled her against his mech's armour. It was oddly conforming to be held by something so large, even if the material she was pressed up against was so metallic and firm.
Churk slowly brought her up until she was eye to sensor array with his machine. He peered at her, through the enhanced vision of the mech, as if trying to weigh up her impressive achievements thus far with the things he was beginning to suspect.
“Why are you here Sustain?” He asked. Sustain found his voice to be calm. Too calm. Her heartrate increased as her grin was dashed.
“To recover the civilian population before the Tide can get to them?” She asked, faking a confused look, but she knew that wasn’t what Churk was asking. She glanced to her right to see Jac there too.
“You said there were a thousand of these operations taking place around Algeen Prime, but even if you’re the best humanity has to offer, watching humanities’ armies in action must truly be a sight to behold. So why so sparring with your forces? Why not take the fight to a capital city, and save a billion Algeen’s instead of at best two million? Where is the fight Sustain.”
Churk didn’t sound angry, but in his place Sustain would have been shaking with rage, so she answered slowly. Carefully. She just looked up. Night was falling, how long had she been out? How much time was left until the show started?
“You know what the Tide Mega Fleets are, yeah?”
A shutter ran through Churk’s spine.
“I’ve had the personal displeasure.” He waved his mech’s free hand at Jac. “We’re the only two that made it home from our carrier.”
His voice was smooth, too smooth. Too evenly controlled. But Sustain could hear it slipping. His control fracturing under fear and brutal memories.
“Humanity has six hundred systems to its name, once they’re done absorbing yours, which they will be very soon, the Tide will have over three times that amount. Even a grunt like me can see that’s not a winning proposition. We need an edge; raw skill isn’t going to cut it. We need a technological advantage. Which means time, and you don’t gain time by throwing your soldiers away to save a dying republic. Even if it’s the right thing to do.”
Sustain took a breath. A long, deep, breath.
“So, you’re here for the Mega fleets, the Tide’s best. Humanity intends to dull the spears edge before withdrawing to more defensible territory. To its defensible territory.” Jac was finally speaking, his voice raw with emotion. Thick and heavy.
Sustain glanced over at him, before turning again to face Churk. If anyone was going to kill her right now, it would be him. He wouldn’t let his subordinate perform such a morally grey action. Well, she thought he wouldn’t anyway.
“If we were going after those fleets directly, I’d be in orbit. This operation is huge, but even so, taking them on would be a massive hail merry. An all or nothing gamble and there’s no way high command would be that desperate just yet…” Sustain paused and looked down at the farm below her. “As I understand it, your planets core is hollow. There’s an absolutely massive AI core down there, and all the reactors needed to power it...”
Churk stepped back involuntarily and Sustain was knocked off his mechs hand. She fell hard onto soft soil, sprawling gracelessly out as the two Algeen’s towered over her in their Tide mechs.
“You can’t be serious.” There were both speaking at once, but Sustain could only hear Jac, as he took one massive step towards her. “Humanity wouldn’t… You wouldn’t. No one would. Not even the Tide would…”
Sustain simply rose to her feet, but suddenly found she could no longer look at the two Algeen’s in their mech’s faces. Silence stretched over the Algeen farm, as if even the dead that lay in the fertile fields were unwilling to moan or scream in either rage or pain.
Sustain flinched at Churk raised his mechs railgun and fired again, the Tide AA gun collapsed in on its and promptly exploded. That very same railgun spun through the air, and Sustain found herself staring down the barrel of a gun that was longer then she was tall.
“Swear to me, that you had nothing to do with the planning of this mission. Swear to me that you’re just a pawn. A tool used by desperate demons to accomplish this…” He waved at the AA gun with his mech’s other hand, and the barrel of the machine’s weapon swayed ever so slightly. “This… Pity mission… That’s why you’re here isn’t it? You figured out the truth, but you were never told. You’re here because in your heart you wanted to save those that you could, even if it was your own people that would kill them if you didn’t?”
Churk sounded less like he was questioning or threatening her, even as he held a massive weapon pointed at her. The damn had broken, Sustain thought he might be crying. He sounded like he was crying. Like he was begging her to be… good? Like he needed even those that might be his enemy to be, in some way or form, civilised.
Sustain knew what she should say, but she didn’t have it in her soul to lie to this man. She wasn’t raised like that.
“I didn’t have a hand in planning any of this. But if I was put in charge, it’s exactly what I would do. It’s this, and a thousand other black actions that win a war. This is why we’re here after all. To do what your republic wouldn’t.”
Sustain was looking Churk in his metaphorical eyes again, self-righteous in pose and prose. But she was shaking limb from limb. He had absolutely no reason not to obliterate her on the spot. No reason to believe the transport wouldn’t still deploy without her being there. He’d be right too; he could wipe her away without so much as a speck of blood on his hands. Without consequence.
But perhaps such a thing was simply too human for the Algeen’s. Or perhaps, with his very world about to be wiped away in the transition from one slaughter to another, he simply wanted to go home to his family still able to call himself a righteous man.
Churk lowered his mech’s weapon, and simply turned his back on her. His mech beginning the slow and plodding journey back home. To a new, albeit uncertain future. Sustain looked at Jac, who took longer as he weighed up the mental pros and cons of killing her, until eventually her too took his leave of her.
Sustain fell to her knees at the sight of the two ex-tide machine’s back. Suddenly feeling oh so very exhausted. For as alien as the environment felt, a farm was still a farm, the dirt itself was comforting. Familiar. All in all, this wasn’t a bad place to die. Saving almost two thousand Algeen’s in doing so. Not a bad way to die at all.
But she hadn’t saved them. She hadn’t saved anybody. Not yet, not until the war came to an end. Not until humanity levelled the playing field and beat back the Tide. It wasn’t ego that drove her forward, but duty. Humanity needed her skills right now, and she needed a way off this rock before it was blown sky high.
She checked her watch. Just over an hour left. Sustain looked at the piles of broken machinery, the Tide machines all had escape pods. Only the higher tiered slaves were able to use them of course, they needed special codes to be activated. But once they were, the pods had been known to manage orbit on low-G planets and moons. Humanity, and by extension Sustain herself, had those codes too.
She made her way over to the mech she had first faced down, the one she had balled over during her initial charge. Expecting the pilot to still be alive she pulled the auto pistol from her thigh holster and made sure its safety was off.
The acrid tang of scorched metal and burnt hydraulics stung Sustain's nostrils as she got closer. The enemy mech was a hulking monstrosity of angular plates and exposed wiring. One of its legs was mangled, but she didn’t need it walking.
Fortunately, her neural lace was able to interface with the Tide technology, but the mech wasn’t accepting the open cockpit commands she was sending it. Her heartrate increased. If the mech didn’t accept the codes she had, the escape pod might stay in hibernation and she would be very, very dead.
She calmed herself with a deep breath and the thought that it could be a simply mechanical failure. She had hit the damn thing pretty hard, heavy armour or not, something might be damaged in the cockpit’s mechanism.
With a practiced eye, she scanned for weak points, a way to breach the enemy cockpit. A massive dent near the central torso had pulled two central pieces of armour apart. It offered her the best route. Sustain wormed her way into the machine, trying to keep her pistol pointed forward, trying to avoid cutting herself.
Once under the armour the problem became apparent. The cockpit was opening but was colliding with the central chest piece, which was stubbornly refusing to move. So she had just damaged something, good. Even better was the fact that the gap between the cockpits door and the armour was wide enough that Sustain was pretty sure she could squeeze inside of it. Even without moving the armour. Of course if the enemy pilot was awake, they might take offense to that action…
She paused for a long few minutes, simply listening. She couldn’t hear any movement or alien swear words from inside the cockpit, but she did think she could make out, ever so faintly, the breathing of the pilot. Unconscious perhaps?
She didn’t have the time to be sure, and if the pilot was unconscious, she wanted to make her move before they woke up. She tried to move forward with her gun out, but quickly found herself needing more then one hand in the tight space. She holstered the gun but left its safety off just in case. Sustain moved forward and slowly forced her way through.
Inside, the cockpit was a cramped nightmare of sparking panels and flickering alien symbols. And in the centre, slumped against charred consoles, was the pilot. Not the hulking humanoid she had mentally expected, but a lean, mottled green reptilian creature. Its scaled skin gleamed dully, and its chest rose and fell in shallow, unconscious breaths. A trickle of purple blood oozed from a head wound.
Duty warred with something close to pity inside Sustain. This was the enemy, the invader. Yet, they looked so... fragile. She should shoot him but… She thought of Churk and Jac, who really should have shot her. With a sigh, she pulled a length of field cable from her belt. A few swift movements, and the alien was trussed up, secured but not injured.
Only then did Sustain turn towards the mech's core console, she would have to time this perfectly, but if she did the cockpit would be launched skyward and then propelled by the shockwave of Algeen Prime’s detonation. Once in orbit she would just have to hope and pretty that it was the human forces who recovered her first. She really did not want to see what the Algeen’s did to captured soldiers.
She still had a bit of time though, so she set an alarm with her neural lace and laid back. Attempting to ease her headache by resting her eyes. She had the feeling that in the coming few years she was going to be very, very busy.

“Good evening class! Today I will be lecturing you all on the ascent of the primordial race, the Humans.”
Shocked gasps and murmurs run through the crowded classroom as they hear this. Every student in the room was a future galactic level politician of one level or another. They all expected to learn this information sooner or later but each of them without exception thought it would be later.
“Now, now quiet down, I understand the shock of learning it this early but countermeasures have already been put in place. For one you all have had your memories scanned discreetly for the past 6 months. Secondly over these 6 months of classes a memetic agent has been thoroughly rooted in each and every one of your minds.”
Outrage and shouting began among the students at this insane level of invasion into their privacy. But a quiet gentle voice spread across the whole room as though it came from space itself. It was a soft whisper but it seemed to overwhelm all the shouting voices.
“Calm down everyone, your school and teachers are not the ones who did these things. It was myself in fact who did all of that, we can't have greedy or corrupt people learning my peoples secrets after all.”
As this voice spoke up blue light swirled in every corner of the room and slowly coalesced into a being next to the podium. As the being took shape a stunned silence enveloped the room and a few students directly fainted. There standing in the front of their classroom was a human that descended into physical form, wearing a crisp clean suit no less. The teacher looked over to the Human and she smiled at him thankfully. Then, breaking the silence she spoke up again.
“ Now then please wake your unconscious classmates if you would everyone… Ah good since that's done let me start by saying our galaxy's last few thousand years of peace is because the humans did not in fact leave the galaxy. They ascended yes but still watch over us and intervene when major wars or atrocities are about to occur and stop them. Some of you may even remember in the news a few years ago when two pulsars were due to collide. The resulting explosion would have destroyed a dozen nearby stars. The radiation it would have put out would have been enough to clear half of the galaxy of life.
Well the humans descended and transported one of the pulsars to another galaxy altogether. So while it appears they are gone they are here watching over us like guardian angels. Now then, Jonathin, would you like to give your lecture to these eager students?”
Jonathan smiled wide and jumped right into the lecture without any hesitation, a clear look of pride on his face.
“Why yes, I'd love to. So, as you all heard, humans are still around. I'm kind of physical proof of that now aren’t I? Yes we did ascend, yes we did abandon our physical bodies but no we have not stopped watching this galaxy. In the higher plane we have physical bodies again but we can come back down here to live as energy if we so choose. The laws of reality up there are a bit… different. Closer to the fundamental secrets of the underlying structure of reality really.
That's why any species decides to ascend, we complete our understanding and research on this plane, this dimension. It's also a basic requirement for ascension. If you don't have 100% of the laws of this level figured out your mind wont be able to handle the way laws and even basic physics work up there. Anyway, that's enough of all of that, I can't spoil too much about the higher dimensions. So let's get into the how of humanity shall we?
It started a long time ago in the human year 2100, or somewhere around there. It's so long ago the exact year was lost, it is after all human year 34000. Anyway it started back then shortly after the unification of earth. We had just finished a devastating war of ideology. The last one we would ever have in fact. We lost a full 60% of the human population at the time. Eventually we came out of it and our grand authority at the time along with his council of advisors calmed the remaining chaos and started to rebuild Earth.
We had destroyed almost every major city on the planet at the time in that war. It was… a dark time in human history but also one of the brightest. After everything was settled we began to advance rapidly for the betterment of ourselves, of each other, and our society as a whole. One of these advancements was realizing that one of our most deadly diseases, cancer, could never be cured by conventional medicine. We learned this because we fully sequenced and understood the genetic structure of ourselves.
That's when a bold idea was put forward by a medical researcher who was typically ousted by his peers. He had the idea of an internal gene vault. The idea was that a template would be added inside of the body of a person and cells could only replicate from this template. People called him mad for the idea and he could get no traction until a terminal stage 4 cancer patient volunteered to undergo his treatment.
This researcher repurposed some nanobots used in cellular reconstruction for nerve damage cases. He programmed them so that if there were any cells in the body that did not match the information of a person's own template the bots would attack and destroy any cell. The only leeway for variance was in neurons as they simply change too much as we live our lives. A 20% change allowance for them was given to account for neuroplasticity.
This made it so cells could replicate and grow naturally but too much decency was culled. To the surprise of much of the medical community, the stage 4 patient was better in a matter of a single month. The ousted researcher was suddenly praised and hailed as a genius by his peers. But he wasn't done yet, not by a long shot. His next step was to make it so that cells would be unable to replicate on their own. He set a chemical trigger in each and every cell in the human body and without it the cell wouldn’t replicate.
Then he made it so a separate set of nanomachines would carefully administer and synthesize this chemical only to cells who had healthy and perfectly intact telomeres. With this step, he made us biologically immortal and his name will be forever celebrated in human society. Now before we continue on to the next part, any questions?”
Instantly a single appendage of every student in the room went up and a few light signals were given by aquatic species. Seeing this Jonathin smiled wide and slowly went through every question noting a few interesting ones like.
Q “If humans had nanomachines for medicine already, why was this not done sooner?”
A “Because before the great war there was corporate greed and corruption, these nanomachines were hidden away and only used by the rich and powerful.”

Q “Why was the researcher called mad? That idea seemed rather brilliant.”
A “It was against the norm, and we hadn’t quite established at that point that unique and non standard ideas were the ones that should be most encouraged. We got our mentality for science backwards for most of our history, scoffing at ideas that weren’t “mainstream”. But the essence of science itself is to question everything and consider all angles, none should be shunned unless disproven.”
And finally, Jonathins favorite.
Q “Wait, this was only the starting point for human ascension? This would be a plateau for any other race.”
A “ Yes this was the starting point, humanity is a curious and greedy species by nature. We took this nature and focused it towards learning rather than selfish gain. Our curiosity made it so that unless we learned literally everything we would always seek more information and knowledge. Our greed made us hunger for that knowledge like nothing else.”
Once all of the questions were answered Jonathin continued on with his lesson.
“So that was the first step we took, biological immortality. The next step was integrating our minds and bodies with our technology on a higher level. This wasn’t hard, most of us had neuro processors at this point, after all. Integrating with computers and the like was a simple matter of willing ourselves to do it. But we took it a step further and made ourselves several virtual worlds, our own virtual galaxy even. Some places we would meld our minds with others for a time to solve larger, more complex problems. In others we would simply play games and have fun that the pesky conventional rules of reality disallow but a virtual one does.
We integrated with not only our machines but with our own bodies more thoroughly. Using our neuro processors we connected the more instinctual or unconscious parts of the brain to the parts used for higher thinking, memory and the like. We gained total mastery of the flesh, but we noticed even with perfect control over our minds and bodies something was off. We couldn’t control emotions, no matter what we did, something always interfered. So we went through everything and looked it over and came to the only logical conclusion, the soul. We determined that the soul had to exist but we couldn’t seem to measure it or determine its location in the body.
We tried, for centuries, with technology that to many of you would be inconceivable. Microscopes using artificial types of radiation that could view individual quarks for example. We used every scanner, every sensor imaginable but we just couldn’t find the soul. We knew for a fact it had to exist and be measurable… somehow. Eventually someone decided to look at ancient pre-war records and “crackpot theories”. Eventually we came across one that seemed outlandish but remember at this point outlandish ideas were like prized gems. So we read up on it and essentially it said.
‘ I have a theory of my own about energy, not thermal, gravitational, or electrical, but biological energy. Ki, mana, life energy, psychic energy and all the other names we give it. People write it off as non-scientific but I would like to posit that perhaps this energy is real and we simply are dismissing it because it sounds too strange. But the truth is often stranger than fiction and I believe this is also the case here. When you run electricity through a wire, or any non superconductor, what happens? It generated an electric or electromagnetic field, right? The resistance is what causes it, but that's not important here.
What if mana, ki and the like are simply the electromagnetic field that the nervous system of the body is giving off? Psychics or energy users or whatever you want to call them simply figured out a way to control this field based on how energy flows through our nervous system and our flesh. A muscle in the brain that humanity long since forgot how to flex for some reason or other. If we could learn to control this energy again, wouldn’t we as humans with nothing but our organic bodies be able to manipulate energy and do things we would consider magical or psychic? Using our energy field to interact with energy outside our bodies and change the universe around us with it? I do wonder if maybe this would allow us to know once and for all if there is a soul
For if there is a soul, it is surely a form of energy and should we learn to consciously see, feel, hear and interact with energy in these ways, we would know of our soul.’
This document inspired many and we began meditating and looking inwards to our own bodies to find answers. Eventually a method was found and formed the foundation of what we ended up calling cultivation. This founding method inspired dozens more and eventually we knew for a fact how to control the energy fields of our bodies. Decades later, someone finally did it, they were able to sense their own soul. The power they wielded was immense. It was like they had the power of the big bang in the palm of their hands. Once we found the soul we had perfect our minds, our bodies, and now, even our souls were being studied and worked on to perfect.
I wish I could tell you all exactly how to do it but it's esoteric by its very nature. Everyone experiences it in a vastly different way in just the human race, let alone alien species. But humanity dug deeper and eventually discovered every alien race was capable of the same feats and abilities. But we as a whole decided that this should be a journey that every species takes themselves. With that, using our essentially infinite lifespans, we began to look inwards and use this ability to feel and see energies. Every human being suddenly became able to pry into the secrets of reality itself and just know how it worked innately through this energy. So eventually humanity as a whole but also individually learned the true inner workings of reality. With this understanding came a feeling.
We felt the next level, another type of energy. Once we reached enlightenment about our reality, We began to feel the walls of the very dimension we live in. We felt the restrictions of third dimensional space like a boulder on our chests. So we dug even deeper into ourselves and found that we could take all of the energy from our bodies and separate from them, existing independently as souls. As souls through energy we could replicate every feat our technology granted us and more, much much more. We began to guide the whole galaxy as overseers and guardians at that point and over time figured out a few ways to leave this third dimensional space and move on to the next level.
Now we are what you all know of as myths and legends, the… ugh ‘godlike’ creatures you all look up to. Though almost all of us hate being called gods or anything similar, we are human and it is the rightful place of gods to tremble at our feet if they exist, why should we be called something lesser? All life in the universe in humanities eyes in fact is greater than a so-called god, but I’m ranting now. That is the full story of how humanity ascended, any final questions?”
Every appendage in the room shot up again and many more lights flicked on. Jonathan smiled and shook his head as the students began shouting their questions like younglings again, not like the adults in a college level class they actually were.
