I realized while lurking this subreddit that many newer GMs posting here may find themselves confused as to how to properly balance their combat encounters. This is wholly understandable as the book isn't exactly clear on the process. I thought I'd share my insight so as to help any prospective GMs design a clean and effective opfor.
Credentials: I've been GMing Lancer for ~3 years now and have run multiple successful campaigns to completion, both custom and on-module. I teach newbies how to play on the regular and have coached these same newbies to run their own combats sessions.
Disclaimer: The following rules are my own method to encounter building, and while many other GMs in the community follow these rough guidelines you can expect everyone to have their own twist on it. Another GM you talk to will surely have tweaks on what I present here, but that's okay and honestly kind of cool. We all have our own signature method of playing this game and this happens to be mine!
I will endeavor to make this guide as short as possible so as to be easy to reference. Feel free to reach out if you wanted clarification.
Step 0: Nomenclature
A quick glossary of terms I'll be using frequently.
-OpFor: Stands for oppositional force. That means your entire collection of baddies used for a given combat encounter.
-Structure: The structure points for your NPCs. Normal NPCs have only 1 structure by default, but templates like Elite or Veteran can increase that.
-Activations: The number of times an individual NPC can take a turn during a round of combat. Most NPCs have only 1 activation by default, but templates like Elite or Ultra can increase that.
-Budget: The total number of NPCs you should be using for a combat encounter, based on how much Structure each individual NPC has.
Step 1: Pick a Sitrep/Budget
The first thing you need to do before you go any further is pick your Sitrep, starting at page 267 in the Core Rulebook. This is the objective that you and your players will be competing against each other to accomplish. Sitreps are an absolutely essential aspect of Lancer combat and the entire engine is designed around ensuring that you and your players have clear-cut goals with specific win conditions outlined. You can still have the occassional death match, if you're so inclined, but they should be infrequent to rare at best.
The Sitrep also determines your Budget. You'll note that each Sitrep descriptions says something like "Use the normal amount of enemies" or "Use double the amount of enemies as normal." This is what we like to call a "Single Budget" or a "Double Budget," respectively.
A Single Budget encounter should have enough total NPC Structure to equal 2x the number of players partaking in the combat. For example, if you have 4 players, you want the total Structure from all your NPCs to be 8. If you have 3 players, the total Structure from all NPCs should be 6.
This includes reinforcements.
A double budget encounter simply doubles that. 4 players would equal 16 total NPC Structure, 3 players would equal 12 total NPC structure, and so on.
I'll make a comment below that lists which Sitreps have a Single Budget and which Sitreps have a Double Budget.
Step 2: Balancing Damage
It's entirely possible to do too much damage to your players. NPCs hit hard and you need to make sure they're not hitting so hard that your players don't have a chance to respond. Therefore, never have more than 50% of your OpFor be damage dealing NPCs.
The precise nature of a "damage dealing" NPC is up for interpretation. It is universally accepted that all Strikers and all Artillery archetypes are damage dealers. However, some Controllers and even Defenders fall into this category as well. Knowing who the black sheep of each archetype is comes with time and experience and every GM will tell you who they think is the biggest threat.
For now, stick to focusing on Strikers and Artillery until you get a better sense of who's who.
Step 3: Archetype Spread
In addition to having only 50% of your OpFor be damage dealers, make sure that the rest of the NPCs you're using have a healthy spread of different archetypes. That means Support, Controller, and Defender.
You don't have to have one of each, as a rule, but if you're just starting out then that's at least a good guide rail to use until you're more comfortable experimenting.
Step 4: Don't Overdo Templates
One of the biggest mistakes I see new GMs make is to apply the Pirate Template to every single NPC in their OpFor. "But they're all pirates," they'll tell me, confused as to why their players had a miserable time going against +1d6 damage on crit from every single enemy.
Here's what the book doesn't tell you: Templates affect mechanics, not flavor. Only apply a Template to an NPC to give it the strict mechanical benefits that come with it and never for any other reason!
You can have an NPC be a pirate and not use the pirate template. In fact, you absolutely SHOULD have an NPC be a pirate without using the pirate template. The trick to this is to simply say "This guy is a pirate" and not do anything else. It's as easy as that.
Use Templates sparingly. If you're new, I wouldn't recommend using more than 1 per combat. Even now I don't really do more than 2-3, if that.
Step 5: Fair Deployment
Once you have your OpFor picked out and ready to roll, it's time to put them on the board. In an effort to not overwhelm your players but still have enough presence to apply a bit of pressure, only deploy enough NPCs so that their combined Activations equals 1.5x the number of players. For example, if you have 4 players, only have 6 activations on the board. That means 6 normal enemies, 4 normal enemies and an Elite, etc. I like to think of this as a Soft Cap for Activations.
The rest of your OpFor should be kept back as reinforcements. Follow the reinforcement rules of your chosen Sitrep to figure out when they should enter the fray, and how many.
Additionally, never have NPC activations exceed 2x the number of players. They will be overwhelmed very fast and nobody will have fun. Consider this a Hard Cap for Activations.
If you have reinforcements ready to go but you're already at the Soft Cap, you can bring more if the players are winning and you want to turn up the heat. If the players are losing, hold off and wait until they're in a better position. It's your job as GM to moderate the difficulty of combat based on active circumstances.
If you're already at Hard Cap, then no reinforcements get to enter the board yet. Wait until your players start scoring kills, the suckers.
The End
There's more nuance that goes into it than that, but this is a good starting point for anyone who just wants to wrap their heads around a complex system. As you get experienced, you'll start experimenting more with synergy, cross-classing, custom sitreps, and all kinds of crazy shit. The more experience you have, the more you'll be free to fuck around without breaking the game!

The money allocated by Stormont to address ecological problems on Lough Neagh “will not touch the sides” of what is needed, an environmental academic has said.
Last year the Lough was besieged by blooms of blue-green algae, causing vast swathes of thick green substances on its surface.
The crisis resulted from the perfect storm of higher temperatures, prolonged periods of rain and higher nutrient content in the water due to agricultural run-off.
Environment Minister Andrew Muir told the Assembly on Monday that £1.6m had been allocated by the Executive to his department in capital funding and no resource funding for the issues besetting the lough, with officials now looking at other ways to fund the work needed.
Mr Muir said the allocation given to his department was “disappointing”.
He added: “We need to invest in turning the situation round in Lough Neagh.”
The minister also told the Assembly he had commissioned scientific research to assess the effect of removing sand from the lough.
Dr John Barry, Professor of Green Political Economy at Queen’s University Belfast, said the amount allocated would not be anywhere near enough to solve the issues.
“It’s not even going to touch the sides,” he told the Belfast Telegraph.
“The timescales — going on the meeting Save Our Lough had with him last week — were in terms of decades.
“There is an American adage — a day late and a dollar short — but it’s going to be decades late and a lot of money short to address this.
“It is disappointing; the longer we delay addressing the causes of the problems with the Lough, it’s going to take longer and cost more.”
With warmer temperatures expected in 2024 due to the El Nino phenomenon, Dr Barry said the issues that plagued Lough Neagh last year would be even worse this year.
“It’s going to be warmer this year, so it is probably going to be worse than it was last year,” he said.
“The crisis is not caused by climate change, but climate change means the water is warmer, which causes more energy and therefore the algae blooms increase.
“It is a disaster and there is no sign the government is going to be taking it with any degree of seriousness. This really should be an Executive Office priority, not just for DAERA.”
Dr Barry said Mr Muir should be alerting the British and Irish governments to the scale of the problem and demanding more money.
“I think this is such an emergency and it has been declared as such. This is 40% of our drinking water, the largest freshwater lake in these islands. It is an extraordinary situation,” he said.
“Why isn’t he going to the British government and Irish government and saying, ‘Give us more money’? That would be evidence that he is really taking this seriously, rather than asking his [Executive] colleagues nicely.
“He has now tasked his officials to go and find a bit of money down the back of a sofa and we all know how that’s going to work out — it’s not going to be enough.
“This is going to run and run; it’s going to get considerably worse. We could be looking at irreparable damage to the Lough unless it’s addressed now.”
It comes after the Assembly passed a motion calling for an “ecological and biodiversity crisis” to be declared in Northern Ireland.
The motion, tabled by the SDLP opposition, also urged DAERA to bring forward legislation to establish an independent Environmental Protection Agency as outlined in the 2020 New Decade, New Approach agreement.
Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone welcomed the passing of the motion.
“In the past few days with the spell of hot weather we are already seeing signs of the re-emergence of the toxic algae blooms which wreaked such havoc over the past year, killing wildlife, destroying biodiversity and impacting local businesses,” he said.
“The reasons for the ecological crisis at the Lough are well-worn, but it is deeply disappointing that we stand here again on the brink of another summer where little has been done to address these issues.
“Parties have been clear on the need to act to protect the long-term future of the Lough.
“One of the Minister’s first visits after assuming office was to the Lough, but we need action if we are going to save this precious resource.
“Protecting our environment should be a priority for every department and there needs to be ownership of this issue from the entire Executive.
“The SDLP has been calling for an independent Environmental Protection Agency for well over a decade and it was agreed as part of New Decade, New Approach.
“What we have been doing up until this point clearly isn’t working and it is our view that an independent body will give us the best chance of safeguarding our natural resources like Lough Neagh.”

Today is an especially great day because it's day 3 of my release of 'Septenary,' a creative tool which comes as part from another project of mine, 'Canon Mode.' The first thing you'll notice about either of these spreadsheets is they display the 'FUNDAMENTALS Extended 1.0' septenary, except here the cells have been greyed out. This formatting decision was done to illustrate that each column within the fundamentals septenary is not the main focus of this spreadsheet, but are now instead markers for extended sub-septenary groups. There are seven main groups in the 'Fundamentals' septenary and each one has its own extended list of sub-septenaries which help define the main groups.
The greyed out 'FUNDAMENTALS SEPTENARY 1.0' septenary is marked with a '1.0' indicating that it's the root septenary for the rest of the septenaries in the spreadsheet. The second septenary, called 'CHAMPION 1.1,' is marked with a 1.1. This indicates that it's the first septenary to be taken into account for after the root septenary. This post will further explore the 'CHAMPION 1.1' septenary in further detail.

If we look at the 'CHAMPION' marker we can see listed below are its usual seven terms which will act as further markers when used to cross reference other cells within the septenary. If you didn't see yesterdays post, here's a refresher of what the actual definitions of these champions are.
0. Champion: a champion is masterful
  1. Saint: a saint is benevolent
  2. Chief: a chief is leaderly
  3. Sage: a sage is intellectual
  4. Hero: a hero is selfless
  5. Seer: a seer is a visionary
  6. Noble: a noble is honorable
  7. Heretic: a heretic is malevolent
The interesting thing about the 'CHAMPION' septenary is its creation wasn't inspired by mythical or legendary figures, but instead the inspirations for this group actually came from the desire to make a septenary that describes basic and fundamental occupations. When first considering how to create this particular septenary to work as an aid for character creation the important factor here was, "what will they be doing?" That is, what are these characters going to actually be doing once people create them?
{CHAMPION}
There were a few different contenders for the name of the 'CHAMPION' group. Other titles also considered apart from champion were master, legend, hero, and maybe a few more unconventional ones. So what is a champion anyway? Well, it's someone who is victorious. This definition had a really nice overtone of implying someone or something as the ultimate, and greatest that there is. And that's what was wanted to be portrayed alongside with these elements in the list is that these individuals are the absolute best at what they do and have no contenders.
{Trait}
The trait septenary acts as the base defining characteristics of each champion. These are the starting points for building a champion. From here these can act as base traits which can be used to further branch out and find more related traits, behaviors, or qualities that correlate with the type of character one is wanting to build.
{Occupational}
This septenary describes the type of work your champion might be doing. Outside of actually having a literal profession these descriptions can go much beyond in what they're able to explain about what their occupational time is spent doing.
{Class}
This group is much like the same idea of social status. This septenary defines your champions place or position in society.
{Rank}{Title}
These two groupings can be a little difficult to understand without the context of what they were created for. These specifically were meant to illustrate the original seven champions as they were in the fictional universe Dokimi. In the lore of this universe the first seven champions exist at the beginning of time as manifestations of the seven axiom forces. These beings were deities, and existed as the origin of Dokimi. They each had a rank and title, which went as the following.
  1. Lord Saint the Savior
  2. Executive Chief the President
  3. Elder Sage the Legend
  4. Master Hero the Justice
  5. Mother Seer the Universe
  6. Queen Noble the Honorable
  7. Deviless Heretic the Princess
In Dokimi each of these seven champions live up to their rank and title, as each have complete control and influence across their respected domain.

It could be said that a champion is always victorious, because if they weren't then they'd no longer be the champion of whatever they're involved in or with. The 'CHAMPION' sub-septenary is meant to provide a strong and potent backbone for creating a champion who is truly worth of their weight in stature and esteem. With this template/outline then so too might you be able to create your own strong and imposing champion worthy of the legends. Dear California State Leaders,
I write to you today as a voter, taxpayer, constituent, and as a State of California employee. My ________years of dedicated work serves Californians every day because my role focuses on supporting _________.
I want to share my personal story and provide some facts and data about the Governor’s new June 17 RTO (Return to Office) arbitrary mandate. This mandate will cost taxpayers more during this budget deficit crisis and it is a poorly thought-out, one-size-fits-all, chaotic approach. According to the survey data from 110 State Departments, telework was a huge success for recruitment, productivity, morale, collaboration, and decreasing office space. This chaotic, mandatory, arbitrary RTO simply creates a long list of unnecessary problems. For all of the reasons outlined in this email, I strongly support Assemblyman Josh Hoover’s audit request.
My message is simple: Encourage the Governor to rescind the June 17 arbitrary RTO mandate. The decision for the frequency that employees should all meet in-person and collaborate should rest with those closest and most familiar with the work: individual Unit Managers. These managers know the true collaboration, mentorship, and operational needs of their individual teams. Individual Unit Managers should be allowed to make decisions on accordingly to carry out the Department’s goals and mission. This is the bottoms-up approach that balances the needs of both the employer and employees. The Governor’s mandate and top-down approach fails to acknowledge the many financial and environmental repercussions to not only its own employees, but also to the State of California.
I want to share my personal story as a working class, public servant. With high inflation, I simply cannot afford to shoulder the cost of commuting, which averages $8,466 annually.. According to this 2023 LAO (Legislative Analyst Office) report, for most employees, our State provided wages have consistently been lower than the inflation rate, year-after-year, since 1999, constantly eroding our purchasing power. Other employees have it worse, such as scientists who have had their salaries be frozen for 4 years since 2020 as CalHR has refused to budge on reaching a contract. Purchasing power is a key metric since a $50,000 salary in 2024 buys far less than in 1999. This 2023 UC Berkeley Labor Center report confirmed that “State workers struggle to make ends meet throughout California.” Even the 2023 California State Auditor reports “that hiring and retaining qualified IT staff is the greatest challenge that they [State Departments] currently face.”
If the State is unwilling to provide market wages that keep up with inflation, the state can recruit and retain employees by improving working conditions, such as telework. Being allowed to telework 5 days a week has helped stretch my limited dollars, especially in this inflationary period. This arbitrary RTO mandate is effectively yet another pay cut for me that I simply cannot afford.

The State will incur many financial and environmental costs:
  1. If even 33%, or 73,086 out of the 221,474 State employees use the monthly maximum IRS public transportation benefit,) that would cost the State $276.3 million every single year.
  2. State Departments already spend $600 million per year on rent. Many State Departments also simply do not have enough office space for all of their employees currently. There is nowhere near enough quiet conference room space for employees to hold confidential meetings with stakeholders. Will these departments sign new leases for office space?
  3. State Departments will be forced to buy many millions of dollars worth of additional office equipment for employees to effectively carry out their jobs including additional webcams, headsets, keyboards, standard office supplies, etc.
  4. Pursuant to the reasonable accommodation process for employees with verified medical needs, State Departments will need to purchase other expensive equipment, including but not limited to specialized chairs and stand up desks.
    1. It is important to note that many employees have already invested their own money into equipping their own home office that best meets their needs. It is not simply not possible to ask an employee to bring in their own large equipment from home to the office and back, so the State Departments would incur these additional purchases.
  5. State Departments will be spending much more in maintenance costs for elevators, bathroom repairs, printer repairs, electricity, water, gas, and other utilities.
  6. State telework has also eliminated nearly 400,000 metric tons of carbon emissions. Mandating RTO will needlessly cause more carbon emissions, which directly runs counter to the Governor’s own words for his trip to the Vatican: “global temperatures [are] hurtling towards alarming new heights, the stakes could not be higher. There is no greater authority than moral authority — and the Pope’s leadership on the climate crisis inspires us all to push further and faster.”
The arbitrary mandatory RTO causes chaos among State Departments:
Across various departments, it’s common knowledge that a sizable number of executive-level leaders do not reside near Sacramento and instead live in other regions in California, such as the Bay Area and Southern California.
  1. The next logical question is, will the state offer these executive-level leaders special exemptions and privileges not available to rank and file staff and risk the hypocrisy that undermines the Governor’s stated policy for more “collaboration?” This creates another “rules for thee, but not for me” situation.
  2. Or will the State risk losing these executive-level leaders en masse across numerous departments, undermining policy and program implementation?
  3. For Departments considering exempting those who live over 50 miles away, it also destroys employee morale. For example, a 20 year veteran staff member with technical expertise may be forced to commute and come into the office twice a week to train a newer employee over Microsoft Teams or Zoom simply because they live in Los Angeles. This naturally breeds frustration and resentment.
  4. For exempted employees who live over 50 miles away, some Departments are creating policies that their 5 day remote status only applies to their currently held position, so these employees are “forever stuck” and cannot promote upward, even if they have the expertise the Department needs.
  5. The State is starting to open itself up to lawsuits as some Departments are already denying reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities.
  6. Being able to recruit employees from areas other than Sacramento helps ensure Departments get perspectives from different counties all across the State. People from rural, suburban, and urban areas all have different experiences and to best serve ALL Californians, we need a geographically diverse workforce.
  7. As previously stated, many Departments already do not have the office space or needed equipment for all of their employees. With RTO, new equipment will be needed and purchasing equipment notoriously takes a long time. These factors, combined with many departments trying to implement a hoteling system, will ultimately result in a extremely chaotic return-to-the-office and tank productivity. Many Departments have held Q&A sessions and time and time again, HR offices have been unable to answer basic questions about RTO logistics.
Some state employees have discussed that this is their number one quality-of-life issue and may galvanize them to start engaging with media contacts and spread the hypocrisy on social media. Their goal is to highlight the glaring mismatch and hypocrisy between CA’s proud public policies and the actual reality of choices being made by this Administration. Quite frankly, I fear that this may hurt the Governor and other State Leaders in the future. By unilaterally imposing an arbitrary RTO mandate across the board, the Administration is actively choosing to make working class public servant’s lives worse off, so I understand my colleague’s sentiments.
As MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow recently stated to her own bosses, “Hearing legitimate criticism, responding to it and correcting course. Not digging in, not blaming others. Take a minute, acknowledge that maybe it wasn’t the right call. It is a sign of strength, not weakness, to acknowledge when you are wrong.”
To reiterate, my request is simple: Encourage the Governor to rescind the arbitrary, mandatory, one-size-fits-all, chaotic RTO mandate. Allow individual Unit Managers the flexibility to enact telework policies that best meet their team’s needs to effectively carry out the Department’s mission. They are the ones closest to the work and the ones most knowledgable about what the team needs to succeed.

For the past three years, he and his wife, Karen-Lynn Amouyal, have been using Notion, a popular software tool, to optimize their household and relationship. His version of the tool, commonly used by businesses to manage complex projects, functions like a souped-up Google Doc, with sections for a grocery list, to-do lists and details of upcoming trips.
More unusual is a section Mr. Lang, a venture capital investor who previously worked at Notion, created about principles (“what’s important to us as a couple”). Another section, called “Learnings,” outlines things the couple have discovered about each other, such as their love languages and Myers-Briggs test results. There’s a list of friends they want to set up on dates. They also maintain a log of memories from their date nights. Mr. Lang, 30, was so proud of the creation that last month, he started promoting a template of the setup to others. “My wife and I use Notion religiously to manage our day-to-day life,” he wrote on X. “I turned this into a template, let me know if you’d like to see it!”

Howdy to the beautiful people of CFB! Welcome to my ranking of the 2023 uniforms for West Virginia Mountaineer Football! I thought I would rank WVU after their new uniforms were released a few weeks ago. I intend on ranking most of the Big XII teams and new PAC additions (Arizona and Utah) soon. In fact, I already covered Colorado, ASU, Oklahoma State and TCU if you want to scratch that uniform itch. If you are interested in my thoughts regarding the Big XII uniform season, check out my 2023 Season-in-Review Post or my recent 2023 Uniform Awards post, or recent 2023 rankings, which are all up top in my profile. If you want to go back further, check out these 2022 posts: 2022 Uniform Awards and Big XII Uniform Tracker 2022: Season-in-Review. (Sorry for the hyperlink inconvenience, but Reddit hates when I put links in the top paragraph, for whatever reason.) But for now, let’s check out what the Mountaineers donned in their much-improved 2023 Big 12 season, featuring some facts, stats, and history. 11. Yellow/Yellow/Yellow - Week 4 vs TTU (W, 20-13)

The Gold Rush tradition in Morgantown started in 2007, and has had a pretty interesting history, including a College Gameday appearance, a 2012 heartbreaker against OU, a 2013 30-21 smash of No. 11 OSU, and several other wild finishes in WV. While I love the history and the crowd involvement, this 2019 jersey template is just too blank to properly allow gold uniforms to shine (I know I put “Yellow” in the combo, that's purely for convenience, I mean no disrespect at all). The new 2024 uniforms - which we’ll showcase at the end - do a much better job of providing a structure to the Gold Rush look, but these are, again, simply too much and too bold.
10. Yellow/Gray/Gray - Week 2 vs Duquesne (W, 56-17)

Ah, the gray. We’ll see another gray example later on, but I think the gray suits just work out better when mixed with blue. The yellow creates an odd balance, and makes the suit feel top heavy. Yellow pants may have helped the look, but I’m not sure I like that idea, either. I do like the complementary yellow font outline to the helmet, and hey, it was a brand-new look! That’s got to count for something.
9. Blue/Blue/Blue - Military Appreciation Week 10 vs BYU (W, 37-7)

Nothing inherently wrong with this look, I think that, again, it falls victim to the monochrome pitfalls of this 2019 update, just like the yellow/gold. The Military Edition state outline is an awesome touch, and the blue really isn't that bad compared with an all gray or all yellow, it’s just not a top pick. This same uniform and decal combo was worn in 2022 against OU, so it must be a tradition thing. The choices start getting a lot harder from here on out.
8. Blue/White/Yellow - Week 1 at Penn State (L, 15-38)

For some reason, this is always a WVU fan favorite. For the life of me I can’t figure it out. Anyone who has tuned in to my tracker knows I don’t really like tri-color looks, and this is another instance where it just doesn’t work for me. Maybe I need some convincing, maybe I’m wrong, who knows? It just doesn’t work for me. On another note, how did WVU select the Mountaineer as a mascot? Well, it's built into the location. West Virginia is known as the Mountain State because it is the only state entirely within the Appalachian Mountain region, out of the 13 states that the Appalachian Mountains pass through. Thus, residents are known as Mountaineers. The word is even featured on the state seal/motto - Montani Semper Liberi (English: "Mountaineers are Always Free"), which has remained steadfast since the state’s founding in 1863. This same phrase is embroidered on the inside collar of the uniforms, new and old. As far as we’re aware, WVU sports programs went by “the Mountaineers” starting in 1890, and have continued ever since!
7. Blue/White/White - Week 7 at UH (L, 39-41)

This was an absolutely psycho game to watch, featuring UH’s wild tip drill antics wearing their black alternates. Here, WVU wore a mostly white uniform capped off by their blue “Cue Country Roads” helmet introduced in this year’s Backyard Brawl. And yes, this look is clean. The font differentiates the white nicely, the helmet is busy enough to compensate for some of the stark white, and the suit is - of course - helped by a night game against a team wearing black. I won’t blab anymore, they're nice. The white is just a little bit too simplistic here. Pant stripes will definitely help in the new suits.
6. Blue/Gray/Blue - Week 13 at Baylor (W, 34-31)

One of the more eclectic away combos I’ve ever seen, this look makes me sad that the gray has been officially put out of commission. It’s actually the first time WVU wore gray on the road and only the sixth gray game usage since 2019. It definitely works better as a road combo against the dark green of Baylor. The blue looks great sandwiching the gray suit, but the yellow outline feels a little out of place in this uniform as opposed to the white or blue majority uniforms. Lots of upside, but just enough complaints to keep it at the 6 spot.
5. White/White/White - Week 11 at OU (L, 20-59)

I can’t get over these beautiful helmets. West Virginia’s helmet is a work of art. Using the decal popularized by the “Cue Country Roads” uniforms from the past two years on an otherwise clean white shell was a stroke of genius. The more detailed logo draws the eye compared to the stark white jersey and pants, while the large blue numbers help in breaking up the field. Still, this look may have looked a little bit better with some blue pants, or at least more blue accessories like shoes, belts, and gloves. The blue facemask is a start, but yeah, I like this look a lot. Still, the helmet puts these way up on my list.
4. Blue/White/Blue - Week 9 at UCF (W, 41-28)

While I like the blue/gray sandwich in #6, this is definitely a more improved version. The overall flow of the uniform feels better here. No outline on the numbers helps keep things clean and matches the top and bottom nicely. How did WVU originally pick their colors? Simple. They’re featured in the state seal. These colors were adopted by the school in 1890, inspired by the West Virginia state seal, featuring a boulder that has been inscribed with the state’s founding - June 20, 1863. In front of the boulder lies two crossed rifles and a Grecian liberty cap as a symbol of the state's fight for liberty. The two men on either side of the boulder represent agriculture and industry. It’s as simple as that! This program really does represent state pride like no other. We're almost to the top spots!
3. Blue/Blue/Yellow - Week 8 vs OSU (L, 48-34) and Week 12 vs UC (W, 42-21)

Ah. The podium is here. These next three picks were all highly debated and could very well go either way. This look is obviously the most traditional of the wardrobe, and has been worn three times since I started tracking publicly in 2022. And of course, it’s one of the most recognizable combos for the Mountaineers in general. For me, I am especially reminded of Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey, and Geno Smith lighting up the scoreboard against Baylor with Terrence Williams in 2012. I was just beginning to enjoy and follow college football more often, and this game really sparked an interest in me, especially as 2012 was a good KSU year AND WVU’s Big 12 opener. The yellow pants provide a great contrast to the blue. And the flying WV logo is one of the few “letter logos” that I think works really well. You just can’t beat it despite the pitfalls of the 2019 template. The 2024 version will be a sight to behold and could very well cement itself in first place next year. Beautiful, classic, and a no-brainer pick for a medal.
2. White/White/Blue - Week 5 at TCU (W, 24-21)

What sets this one apart from all the other away combos? Unlike a lot of the other WVU suits, this one almost completely removes yellow while still feeling balanced in color. The only yellow on these are splashed on the helmet and hip logo. The blue may originally seem to weigh the look down, but once you add the large blue logo on the helmet and balance it with the almost all white on the rest of the suit, you get a magnificent away look. And finally, first place! Last year, we saw the amazing and incredible away version of this uniform. This year’s home version featured a perfect gold usage which felt balanced yet bold. The symmetrical blues, liberal use of gold, sublimated WV road map, the consistent striping on the helmet and pants, “Mountaineers” wordmark on the chest all topped off by that immaculate gold WV state outline is oh so wonderful. I mean, how is it possible to kick this much ass? It’s everything wonderful about the away uniforms added to a more traditional color scheme that, wow. Honestly, the picture itself does a great job. Creative, symmetrical, and a color scheme everyone loves, this is a grand slam design.

The 2024 suits honor the past traditions of WVU uniforms while also improving on the initial 2019 update through the new Nike F.U.S.E template. They maintain the updated 2019 color scheme and font, feature the fairly new state-outline WVU logo from the 2022 and 2023 “Cue Country Roads” alternates (both on the collar and helmet options), and add on some striping, shoulder accents, and wordmarks. The Flying WV returned to the sleeves for the first time since 2012 with wide acclaim. Also a feature of the Don Nehlen era are the pants stripes dating back to the 60s-90s. The most controversial piece of the uniform are those USC reminiscent 2007-2012 shoulder accents. My overall thoughts? It's a great update. 2019 was far too plain. The color scheme helps, but here the colors get a wonderful structure to build upon. The WV sleeves, the wordmark, and pant stripes are amazing touches, but I think the shoulder accents just add a little too much clutter to an otherwise perfect front. Overall, the helmets are mostly unchanged, the jerseys are a slight improvement, and the pants are a massive step up. I’d give the update an 8/10! Additionally, the Mountaineers released an inspired “Coal Dust” alternate honoring the storied tradition of West Virginian coal mining. They use a unique and fascinating coal pattern pulled straight off an actual coal mine tour, incorporate a black and white state-outline logo on the helmet that is to die for, and use gray/white vertical stripes in a way that tastefully mimics high visibility vests worn by miners. The center stripe on the helmet is my favorite touch, featuring the coal pattern used on the uniform, but with a white to transparent gradient mimicking the light of a miner's headlamp. I mean, this is a blackout look done right. I am so excited to see these in action. Combined together, the main and alternate looks for WVU are all very exciting and definite improvements!
If you’ve got some time, send a nice email to the athletics department design team of Kristin Coldsnow, Matt Wells, Michael Fragale, Joe Swan and Steve Uryasz, who designed the brand new 2024 look. The team worked in conjunction with football equipment managers Dan Nehlen and Austin Blake, who also deserve some praise for the fantastic job they are doing. The EQ room is a tough place to work, and these fine folks kill it day in and day out.

Im a computer science student and a hobbyist writer. I noticed the lack of truly free writing tools with many useful features. So I decided to build one. No emails, no signups, completely non-profit. Id like your feedback on the features I want to implement. I hope this does not count as advertisement
What I have so far: Folders and documents and organizing them any way you want. There will be templates like Three act structure or save the cat structure to let you quickly setup your story.

What Im working on: A version history for chapters. Idea is to let people save an old version before they work on second drafts etc.
A custom wiki. This will contain all the information related to your story. It can be accessed while writing. Its like Wikipedia article links. As a fantasy writer I think this would be really useful.
