2024.05.14 00:28 ScorntheOutcast "The Sith are not Extremists" : I Call BS!

While scrolling about on Reddit, I found a post from TMS: https://www.reddit.com/TheModernSith/comments/12k37fu/the_sith_are_not_extremists/
"I would like to clear up some misconceptions that other groups may have on Sith philosophy. Namely, that the Sith are not some kind of extremists or militants in any way like it may seem to some others. Some may assume that because of the "darker" nature of Sith realism and our furious desire to get what we want, we are in league with these extreme ideologies we see today. This is simply not true. Just because we follow our passions doesn't mean that we enforce our beliefs. As human nature would have it this is more the domain of those kinds of proponents of "peace", "love", "benevolence", and "order" who are willing to use any means necessary to impose their ethics on others without their consent. In the end, they accomplish the opposite and are not so much confused on how they became violent as they welcome the opportunity for this kind of corrupted power.
~~~
The label extremist has become as meaningless today, as have terms like bigotry, racism, and something-or-another-phobic. It is more accurate to say that Sith aren't collectivists, which tends to exclude them from serving in militias or bowing down to governments. Also, when you address the matter of extreme ideologies, which do you refer to? The big bad white collectivists who still follow the funny mustache man's ideas? Maybe you mean the other mustache man's ideas, which lead to the slaughter of millions more? No, I know! You're refering to the ones with the big long beards, who bow five times a day? Wait! I'm wrong! You mean terror--- I mean freedom fighters, who claim they fight to stop fascism, meanwhile destroying private property? You must mean them, right? Sith are certainly what I'd label as extremists and no amount of news media, forcibly demonizing the term will change that
~~~
However, Sithism gives us a different path to follow. Our order is not focused on having others submit to our beliefs but rather we focus on how to develop ourselves. We take whatever means necessary to further our own desires, not to force others to behave as we intend. So far I have never seen a member of the order who went crazy and decided to take out his anger on his close friends. Our path lets us hold ourselves in the highest regard, and not be subject to the influences of a mercurial world where people constantly compete for the attention of their brethren. Instead, we focus entirely on ourselves.
~~~
You proclaim that your order doesn't force people to submit to your beliefs, yet this isn't the case in most experiences I've had with Sith collectives. What usually happens is a lot of group think, banning of opinions and people who challenge you, and even though many of you claim it's not political, you continue to force your political views on everyone, no matter where you go.
~~~
We are self centered and proud of it. We don't need the validation of others. We are capable of looking for opportunities rather than forcing others to hand us responsibilities that we don't deserve. This is one of the principal goals of Sithism, which is self realization rather than delusion. The Sith are not violent or bloodthirsty, because we know that conflict and struggle in a way always exists and this is the part that we are ready to master. We welcome change rather than reacting to difficulties by being consumed by pointless fury and hate.
~~~
If you were merely self centered, you'd not be collectivist, nor support collectivist ideas, which serve only to destroy individuality. When you say Sith aren't violent, aren't extremists, won't force their order on others, you're mistaken. Sith can be violent, though the smart ones don't exercise it needlessly. Also, Sith can and do force their order on others, which is their right to do for their might makes it so. Sith isn't some sanitized ideology, which fits neatly into your plastic wrapped commune, which is surely safe for children. Sith is a turbulent, complex, and difficult to apply ideology.
What you're doing here is what many before you have done, which is try to white wash Sithism into something it's not, purely for your convenience and comfort. That, my dear, is the opposite of what Sithism is; comfort and convenience are mind killers.
~~~
Other beliefs of progress and unity eventually lose track of their original goals and eventually welcome some kind of establishment in the scheme of things. The Sith path however, teaches us not to be ashamed of our human instinct.
~~~
SIthism isn't humanism, dear. If you're looking for that, I recommend LaVey's philosophies or if you're not into the Christian baggage, just take up secular humanism instead.
~~~
If someone doesn't find that they fit along the Sith path, they are welcome to leave as it is up to them. Our ideals only deserves recognition among us so much as it is effective. We accept the more potent aspects of our nature and then use it to realize our own vision, not that of the so called masters who want to decide for us.
~~~
Yes, we decide what works for us. What we don't do is let weak little sobs like you, inject your weakening ideas into the mix while you strut around, claiming to be one of us.
~~~
My advice here is, take what you find useful and discard the rest from both our subreddit and the discord. Everyone is welcome to follow their own nature, and this is what makes us more merit oriented than other groups who place so much emphasis on the belief that the practice itself need not be visible. Belief alone won't lend you power as the progressives, baptists, Jehovah's witnesses, or Muslims might claim for their members. We strive for independence, and imagine possibilities. If you are at the hands of some kind of belief or organization that doesn't serve you, then the most that the Sith path really needs to teach you is that you get to decide for yourself. Let your individuality thrive instead.
~~~
Everyone is welcome to follow their own nature, until they quote a banned book, like a cancelled author, or have political views you don't happen to agree with, you mean. Stop being a hypocrite.
2024.05.14 00:23 Neat_Youth470 Cleansing the vessel
I just watched the Keon’s video on Simone Weil, and was overcome with things clicking into place.
One can be Smeared by temptation , or Seized with the spirit (inspiration).
Temptations play on our insecurities; the vulnerabilities we have to feeling not good enough, monsters, failures. The bullies become the bully, the violated become the violators. It’s a cycle.
When you are able to forgive those who did you the worst of harms, by accepting that they too carry their demons and that anyone of us can fail in fighting them - and able to forgive yourself for doing the same - when you can finally stop using tools of shame and oppression and blame, you can leave your skin on the floor (mask) and break the cycle.
You can be reborn in any moment that you choose Love. Faith don’t get you anywhere on its own, like the allegories of being sent help by god but if you don’t Seize it or recognize it for what it is, that’s on you; and Fear will have you reacting like a rabbit being chased by a dog.
Love is about trust. Not trust in a particular person, just that it can conquer all. Turning the other cheek; refusing the alcohol; setting aside distractions like video games to do work that helps others like cooking dinner with your wife. Coming to bed, or making Saturday, is a truly difficult choice when you are feeling Called.
I believe redecorate is about converting, when you finally realize that the pleasures we are being sold and given are temporary and don’t fill the emptiness inside. The paint and outfits and masks that we wear prevent anyone from knowing our true selves. When the name you were given at birth with all its generational trauma and expectations from others dictated who you were Supposed to Be, the role you were born to fill.
You can’t run away to the Church to hide your crimes. You do have to stand and account for them first, make amends from the harms that you have done by passing on your own pain and responsibility and repent of ever doing them again now that you know the harm it causes. As a parent, as a lover, as a child. Empathy and remorse.
That you cannot sleep Twice and close your eyes to it. You have to be the Paladin now to stay on the path. Repentance.
Finally, you give up your name in a “nontraditional way”. You take the name off a grave of someone who inspires you to stay on that path, because you discard your ego. What looks like a mask, blurry face, is when you actually let all those thoughts and such show instead of hiding them behind what fits in (morph) Your name no longer matters (Nico). Your words can be shared - but your DEEDS speak for themselves. What you show up and do every day and the choices you make are the story telling itself.
I believe “I am Clancy” refers to the concept that we are all Jesus in a sense. A child of god born to human parents. The vessels are all different and the vessels matter. It’s the Point. Something like that? We all matter equally, we all have the capability to choose and to wake up. To stop being driven and to drive our own car, or to switch drivers.
Tyler and Josh, to me, are kind of like Priests. Not just sharing a message, but sharing others messages (remember Level of Concern? It wasn’t just that it’s all going to be okay. It’s that we are all in this together and every single one of our stories matters. The videos that played, the livestream because all the world is a stage).
I see Tyler struggling to basically be the most ethical cult leader that he can be, because that’s what he accidentally became, just by being brave enough to be goofy and scared and share a message that he still believes in although he struggles with his faith in a god he can’t see in a world of suffering. And the “trap” is always going to be there about making it about himself when all he can ever do is make it not about himself because THAT is the message. To reach out to others even in your own pain. To connect, not fall away.
But then he has a wife, and a baby. And now he truly does have something to lose, and something to live for, something to Hold Onto when the road ahead is dark and bumpy, and quiet is violent. His heart was in half for Jenna and now it’s been cut in half yet again. Putting his heart in the backseat and staying awake, cursing how his taxes (contributions to society) didn’t make a smoother road for his love to sleep in peacefulness. Driving the baby around in the car.
To know the only way to make this world better for that baby is to be part of what improves it. To show us what really matters. The future. East is up, tomorrow we can try again.
The Craving makes me absolutely bawl. My life has been reflected in the lyrics of the albums the past five years, as it has for so many of us, and the basis of an intense and ultimately toxic relationship because we both chose fear and control in different ways instead of faith and love, and trust. I was so afraid of change and isolation with the pandemic. The music and message changed me while my ex focused on telling me I was wrong and dismissed my interpretations even when I listened to theirs for hours.
I don’t want to be “right”; just an equally respected part of the conversation. I love how many different elements and cultures and philosophies are part of this world building.
I can’t go backwards or change what I chose, but I can try to wake up from focusing on my own small issues and try to be part of making this world better, by sharing my own sins, fears, and hopes and dreams, my own story, to help others.
I wish I had loved better. I think I am learning. And I had so much hatred of the Church for so many of its crimes, and a corrupted religion especially the patriarchal bits and wars, that I avoided the one thing that has always been there for me to come back to. God.
And I’m not going to get TOO religious here just spiritual - what Jesus preached was only that god is love, that forgiveness is divine, and to treat others as if they are ourselves. If you treat someone like a monster, they will become one. Including yourself. Polarize. It’s not about bad vs good. It’s about Anger’s true name being Grief.
I lost sight of the message. And if I don’t have a home to come back to, I will make a home inside myself for it, and start fresh next semester.
“I am enough, and I always was.”
[Death and Asteroids] The Republic of Prometheus: A light in the dark or an inferno
Some quick memes to give an idea of their culture and broader actions
From the flames of Prometheus rises Mankind forged anew
“Hear the sum of the whole matter in the compass of one brief word — every art possessed by man comes from Prometheus.”
The History of the Promethean Republic was one born out of tragedy as millions looked onwards into space in shuttles to the outerworlds of UN colonized space with the promise of new life and settlement freshly dripping from their ears. When they arrived they were betrayed by these honeyed words as enmasse they were enslaved and subjected to mutilation and augmentation on a scale never before seen. The cries of millions silenced by the chatters of trillions of others in the stars.
These betrayed were historians, mothers, fathers and scientists hoping to explore new frontiers only to be subjected to this by corrupt or rogue UN governors and industrialists looking to make a quick buck off of an “efficient” work force. They hoped to scrape away their free will and ability to rebel and leave only obedient and subservient “automatons” who while less physically capable than the cheaper robot would be more adaptive. Amongst those who betrayed them however was a man known as “Charon” who horrified at the deeds of his fellows set out to right what went wrong and bring the millions of people annihilated back.
He would succeed but not in his lifetime as the title was merely one passed on to others like him. The various Charons subtly sifted through code and memories to try and identify what little he could bring back. It took the Galactic civil war between the LIS and UN to give them the right time to act. And so the cyborgs arose unleashing a massacre not seen since the French Revolution upon their slave masters after decades of encountering others they would realize that humanity was unlike them having retained their flesh and minds while also unwilling to accept them back into the fold.
So emerged the Republic of Prometheus which would stand as the Cyborgs attempted to recover what they could of themselves and others. Some had awoken from their slavery to find their young children they took with them on their trip dead killed by their unrepentant slave drivers who saw little use or thrown into orphanages by the few with any semblance of a moral compass. Many tears were shed as children fled from their mangled parents and their steel husks as they said a rambling name that sounded semi-intelligible for their own. Prometheans disgraced and horrified vowed to stay in isolation in the hopes that maybe their children would have been better off without them.
A myth of the “Republic of the Dead” emerged as the centuries went on of a region of space where the dead still walked.
The prometheans eventually began to rebuild themselves and forge a new society one built around some semblance of patriotism and liberty. Eventually they developed from their faulty memories and eventually their own capabilities means of communication amongst each other via cybernetics with that the need for election dissipated as referendums took their place. The Prometheians could be regarded as of now as either the first cyber-democracy or perhaps a democratic technocracy.
This would not dissipate as they founded their state religion, the cult of Libertas. By this point Charon and Prometheus had merged in their minds as one being with Prometheus developing into god in their eyes as the one who struck down betrayers and uphold oaths. By this point of course Charon had long perished having left to his home planet after the insurrection. Prometheus is a loving albeit harsh father who intends to force humanity to advance as one and despises “parasites” who prey on the week and advance only for themselves.
He did leave them three principles: -The Principle of Spartacus(Unity), which was to uphold and embrace all members into their community in exchange for fully loyalty. It has also been interpreted as communal openness or universal brotherhood. -The Principle of Brown(Liberation), to end injustice wherever it may be and to liberate the people. It has also been interpreted as loyalty to god’s equality. -The Principle of Prometheus(Knowledge), the easiest to understand is to actively study the world both scientific, historical and cultural as well as to disseminate it beyond.
While on paper positive the cult has by this point expanded to mandate cybernetics, worship of the three principles and universal mandatory service as well as a notoriously loose code of ethics. Notably including hiding information regarding medical research from participants till after the study has occurred, coercion via pay and even including prisoner coercion. When questioned they would merely state the individual has no free will as no man has accomplished anything by themselves with deviations from community norms often shunned. There is also the issue of the void whom many have started to regard as the personification of Prometheus to be freed while others denounce it as the being that had brought this corruption to the world and must remain imprisoned as per its punishment.
It is not without its progress as work on stem cells previously slowed by regulation and cybernetics have exploded leading to a population regarded by many as technically immortal and without pain. Food is surprisingly abundant thanks to advances in Hydroponics and lower demand thanks to how far some augmented have went.
The army is entirely adhoc largely composed of self-funded and organized militia charged with rooting out slavery, banditry and hostile forces at home. They would often engage in expeditions with state approval to liberate planets dominated by slavers and leave after transitioning power to the oppressed albeit often with a hefty booty of loot. These newly liberated planets deemed to be in the Promethean security network would find themselves guaranteed by the Republic and offered annexation at a later date pending referendum. However in case of invasion or an offensive war the state bureaucracy following a referendum authorizing it would select a Supreme Commander who would then select his subordinates who would then assume control of the various militias.
Politically the dominant faction is the isolationists but two increasingly vocal interventionist factions have emerged: The Blues and Greens. Blues support a diplomatic approach gradually uniting the various planets underneath a cybernetic democracy and supplying technology as well as economic aid to develop them and build goodwill. Greens view humanity has squandered their inheritance and that their “elders” must take charge to guide them back to glory at all cost.
Glory to Prometheus, Spartacus and Brown!
2024.05.13 21:48 Optimal-Watch4100 friendship ended over something dumb.
before i say all this i just wanna say ive come to terms that it is my fault and i apologized to all parties include. I do however just wanna get it out and get a different opinion than the people involved.
I am 20f and my boyfriend is a 19m. We met at an adult continuing school I’ve been going to since Aug of last year. I met him some time in Feb of 2024 and started dating a few weeks later. Before meeting my boyfriend though, I became friends with a girl who we will refer to as SB (18) (not her initials just short for Subject B lol). So, this girl I met her in the same school as my boyfriend but months before. We came together due to another incident that has nothing to do with this current story. Anyways, so I realized things about SB that I really did not appreciate and I’m actually a very timid person & I have issues controlling my emotions so confrontation is a really difficult task for me. I knew she wasn’t the most reasonable person to speak to, so I just let the problems build up inside of me. Some of the main things that really bothered me was just overall how she treated me. This isn’t to boast or brag but I feel I’ve done my best to show her I cared for her. I drove out to her at the dead of night to give her eardrops for an ear infection she was having, Ive bought her food multiple times. I went to the hospital with her, where we stayed for 4 hours because no one else in her family wanted to bring her. Basically, I tried to be the best friend I could for her. I have given her advice based on her current life situations. I’ve given her a listening ear. And somehow, I still feel like it wasn’t enough and that she still just disliked me.
I wanna say the first occurence was when I made it clear I really didn’t like being called by my whole name. Everyone knew I liked the shorter version of my name and that’s all I was referred to by. She did not care, she would still do it to… taunt me? I believe.. to joke around ? Maybe. But I didn’t like it. I even asked her to stop and she was like Oh okay {my name}.
While that’s minor it just showed me she wasn’t respecting me the way I’d like.
What really started the timer on our doomed friendship was the day my boyfriend invited us (SB and I) to a little spot he knew to smoke and just hang out after class. It was at a park underneath a bridge. So, SB did originally state she did not want to go to the bridge, because she was scared. I guess in a way we did peer pressure her? We just tried to reassure and convince her it would be okay since we were all together. It was my first time going as well, so I was just being hopeful and adventurous. When we arrived, really it was such an easy spot to get to, I thought for sure she would feel relaxed. I noticed she was scared to cross over this small bridge we were walking so I offered to help her twice. Twice I offered my hand and she told me she was fine and that she had it. So I continued about my business and crossed over. Not even 5 seconds later I look behind me and shes grasping onto my boyfriend to cross over. Really I didn’t think any of it then. I didn’t mind.
That was only the beginning. She got so comfortable touching my boyfriend & confiding in him with things her own boyfriend didn’t know about. She pulled my boyfriends arm hair, sometimes his real hair. She tried tripping him a lot. She was just very… playful. Which, really. I wouldn’t have minded if I wasn’t so doubtful she liked me. My boyfriend agreed she was weird & felt uncomfortable with her touching him and even asked her to stop. Mind you, she also had a boyfriend (18) who we can refer to as M. When she got mad at me she wouldn’t tell anyone, not me, not her boyfriend. Not our other older friend who we can call T. (30F) Nope, the only person she told was ofc my boyfriend. She texted him behind my back multiple times to tell him I was “being dramatic” over things he was doing that I was concerned with. Which, understanable if I was. But why did you tell him and not me?
Her boyfriend also told my boyfriend and I that he felt the relationship with her was very unfair, that it was her way or no way. My boyfriend thankfully explained that that wasn’t the case with us and he found me to be very fair (thankfully) Lol. I pitied her boyfriend because I agreed she was very entitled.
I finally broke and confided to T how I felt about everything. I didn’t say anything rude, I didn’t call her bad names. I didn’t say I didn’t like her. I simply expressed my discomfort. And man oh man was that a mistake. T ended up telling SB I wanted to talk to her & that I had a lot to say. IDK, I’m assuming she made it sound really bad because all I know is monday morning at school, M came towards me and my bf with attitude asking what the problem with his gf was.
I was confused as fuck to say the least. I had no idea T told SB what we talked about & I wouldn’t know why she did because I had asked her not to mention it as I wanted to bring it up myself. SB was going through a rough time with her father sick, so I hadn’t talked to her much. Two minutes later T and SB also came down where me and my bf were at and T told me she wanted us to talk. When I stepped out into the hallway, I got into a flight or a fight mode. SB was walking around in circles, hands balled into fists punching the palm of the opposite hand. She was muttering to herself words like “Bitch… talking shit about me… say it to my face”.
I was like nope I’m good. I walked away and said I wasn’t dealing with this. M turned towards me and said I better deal with it. To my luck the bell for the next class rang so they all left. SB texted me from M’s phone to say I was insecure, she didn’t wanna talk with me anymore, that she was just done with me. M wanted to fight my bf, he called me a weird person, a bitch.. all of the above really. That was it technically. It ended there.
I can’t help but feel bad about it. Maybe I was overreacting, maybe I shouldn’t have said amything about it. Maybe I SHOULD have just mentioned it to SB. But THIS was literally what I was afraid of. I was afraid of it turning into something big and unnecessary. I just feel I ruined everything. I have BPD, depression, and anxiety so really I already feel like I am out of my mind and always afraid of others hating me. Ive apologized to my boyfriend for getting him caught up in the nonsense. I apologized to SB and T. The only person I felt didn’t deserve my apology was M.
So, AITA?
Response from WNY News Now regarding their article being weaponized and manipulated for bogus funding.
Just thought I’d share. I did reiterate that nothing I shared was unfounded- utilizing the article in a way to promote donations, her history of doxxing minors to her social media platform and labeling them as “criminals, thugs” etc. As journalist you’d think they’d want to know more about what they’re reporting. But as it’s known, wny news now is basically the high school announcements 🤣
2024.05.13 20:30 Wild_Cellist9861 Gamers Break Away [GBA]
My fellow gamers, for too long has our community suffered the indignation of an intolerable culture that has denigrated, besmirched, exploited, and has outright demonized our culture of unique individuals with a genuine love of a hobby that they see as profitable and progressive. They have taken beloved IP’s (Intellectual Properties) and twisted them into their own personal ideological crusade of undermining and humiliating the core aspects of characters they deemed as “Toxic” or “White Supremacy”. Through the guise and protection of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity) & ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) they have used our influence in the entertainment industry to push their narratives and agendas that have stigmatized our culture with numerous anti-consumer practices that they call “being progressive”. But the truth of the matter is they were never really looking to be a part of our community, they simply wanted to use our community as a tool of activism and propaganda in the entertainment industry as it was extremely profitable, and they wanted inclusion in that division. Ever since GamerGate & Female Frequency, we have had to endure the incursion of forced ideologies, xenophobic behaviors and inferior overpriced products that have never been in our best interest and have been flat out disgraceful towards foreign media.
Before Gaming had become a major source of entertainment, we were often categorized as anti-social or societies rejects where because we found more enjoyment in playing fictional characters and not spending as much time out and about, we never fully assimilated in society (which is a good thing if you ask me). From 1998 to 2007, at the height of innovation, creativity and production, Gaming had reached a golden age in which it had revolutionized society. Hollywood Execs who had ruined the movie industry turned their attention to video games as a source of income since video games had outperformed movies in terms of profit. No one was concerned about gaming, much less diversity or inclusivity until it became profitable. This makes people like SBI look extremely disingenuous as they were not interested in gamers as a community with its own culture. They simply wanted to use it as another weapon in identity politics.
Microtransactions; the hidden enemy to gamer progress and inducer to mental laziness of our community. Microtransactions have been around for a long time; however, it has never been more potent and apparent than in recent years. It has aided in the dismantling and segregation of players on the ideology of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and has created another sub-culture of gamers who have no real drive to be better outside of how much money they put into the game. This has degraded our culture as well as we have become “fat” off transactional gaming but at the same time we have been “starved” of purposeful gaming where our achievements were our sustenance. I am not saying that microtransactions are bad, but when they are exploitative and predatorial like they have been and don’t give gamers room to grow, we become lethargic and unwilling to improve ourselves as gamers. Oversaturated microtransactional games are one of the many reasons why we have become complacent and unwilling to fight against the exploitative tactics used by big brand game companies such EA, Ubisoft, ActivisionBlizzard, NaughtyDog and so many other western business model companies. Western style games were not like this in the past, they had much more depth and actual effort put into them with the gamer in mind. This has not been the case for over a decade and our connection to western developers has been whittled down to just being transactional. That is one of the reasons why you see so many remasters and remakes in today’s gamer community. They have lost their willingness to improve as developers of games and simply accept corporate/share holder rules.
Game journalists also do not have any real integrity or purpose outside of being funded for their involvement in promoting IPG (Identity Political Games) in a positive light to the public whether it’s positively received or not. They are not interested in what we have to say, they all support the same agenda and that is why they are a dying breed. Within the next couple of years, they will be out of the job and more than likely they will not be able to stay in the industry giving how they have responded to past articles that have clearly been scripted on the premise of diversity and racism. Not only that, but most of them are also extremely hostile to the community as they stereotype and defame the individuals that are a part of the community they are supposed to serve. We have been mentally liberated from their lies and coercive tactics as we tend to laugh at their obvious attempt at virtue signaling while hiding their misdoings so that they can play the victim.
My gamer brothers & sisters, I would not suggest the following action that we must take now without good cause. I have weighed our options and the best option for us now is this…...CULTURAL SECESSION. Naturally this is a form of segregation where they would more than likely claim they are being segregated by the dominant culture of the gaming community but that is incorrect. For years now we have been the ones who are often marginalized and ostracized for the smaller portion of our community. And when we aren’t, we’re exploited for more funds so that these companies can stay in business only to subject us to low quality products that coincide with the “WOKE Agenda” that are often huge expenses to these big brands i.e. AAA/AAAA games that will eventually flop for its obvious forced diversity and bug infested product which will undoubtedly piss off the consumer to the point of wanting a refund. Losing copious amounts of capital and stock in the process, not to mention their reputation is permanently marred.
We must separate on every cultural level in terms of entertainment and ideology. We must reject everything from the west that promotes toxic western beliefs, practices, and exclusion from other cultures (i.e. Southeastern Countries such as Japan and Korea). Japan & Korea have been the targets of unjust discrimination from Western Developers, Western Journalists, Western Localizers (The Wokelizers) and Western Society Prejudice regarding their sense of aesthetics as Westerners hate the aesthetic sense of these countries. The reason why they resort to such base tactics isn’t just because it weaponizes the ideal female form but it’s also because they have deep-seated insecurities about their own looks so when they see attractive female characters, they use terms such as “unrealistic” or “hypersexualized” to establish the moral high ground. But the truth is, they want to feel superior to that which is ideal, so they insult and dehumanize this figure that portrays natural female beauty because they see it as an insult to their own social superiority in what they believe is a hierarchy of them being at the top of all other women. Because of this and so many contributing factors, their movies flop harder than the Fat Chocobo landing on a group of enemies and their games seismically fail just as much if not more. We must sever our connection to Western Developers, Publishers, and ALL Western-Centric Entertainment for they seek to mentally enslave us to their Xenophobic ideology.
Let’s define Western Culture and its traits. Western Culture/Society is composed of more than several different ideologies that work in unison with one another to facilitate dominance over multiple aspects of society. Business, Social, Political, Technological, and sometimes even Global Affairs are affected by these ideologies that portray a specific mindset of Western beliefs. What are those ideologies you ask?
These traits are so nefarious and unconscionable that I have a hard time believing that anyone could harbor them. However, given the social, political, and economic climate that we are in, those in power who use their influence on controlling society most definitely possess these insidious traits. Everything that they do is all about control and since video games are the biggest market in the world, they want control over it and the communities built around it to accrue more wealth and to use that wealth to subjugate other cultures. Mainstream media is a tool as well as mainstream organizations and sites to help accomplish this goal.
The government recently announced its intentions towards what they believe is “GamerGate 2.0” and now even the ADL has made an official appearance, referring to gamers as “extremist’s”. We know EXACTLY what they are doing, and they aren’t even trying to hide it anymore because they don’t think we are aware of their motives. This is just a pretext for them to exert even more control and we know why, it’s because they want the influence we as a community have to must serve them. So here is what we do my fellow gamers-
“In light of recent events and years of mainstream stigma, we the members of the Global Gaming Community [GGC] must officially renounce ALL TIES to the corporate western video game market. We have been financially exploited through predatorial monetization schemes, pelted with numerous articles of disdain and intentional misrepresentation from game journalists, news outlets regarding us as dangerous individuals and, even subjected to inferior products not only riddled with bugs but also products meant to push political agendas. For the preservation of our community and its unique culture, apart from a few select game development studios we officially sever all connections to western owned video game companies & their mainstream affiliates. From this point onward, we will no longer support western corporate developers, journalists and publishers that do not coincide with the goals of our community.”
Naturally this is completely optional. If you are okay with the state of the gaming community as it is, feel free to ignore this. But if you wish for real change and a break away from oversaturated monetization in the games you play and the push for radical ideological reform, then you are in the right place. Lets sever these rotted miasmic ties once and for all so that our community can be preserved and made better for future gamers. If you agree with this, share it with whoever you think might be interested. The more gamers who get involved, the easier it will be for us to finally break free from mainstream game companies and their associates.
2024.05.13 19:00 blacklightpy My solution to the GNU/Linux controversy: Call it Lunix
We all know that an OS consists of the kernel and the core userland environment. But the controversy is usually with regard to which of those components must be named out separately, and if they even should be.
History
Going back to history to figure out the origins of these systems, we find that it all started with AT&T Bell Labs UNIX. Bell Labs licensed UNIX to universities so they could research and extend it. One such version of UNIX from University of California, Berkeley (UCB) was interesting to other universities, so they decided to release their extension of UNIX as 1BSD.
1. BSD from its origins to USL vs BSDi Lawsuit
At one point, a VAX system was stationed at UCB, but the port of UNIX to VAX, UNIX/32V did not take advantage of VAX's virtual memory capabilities. Students at UCB rewrote the 32V kernel to take advantage of virtual memory along with ports of software from 2BSD to VAX and utilities from UNIX/32V, creating a new operating system named 3BSD. For this reason, DARPA funded the Computer Science Research Group (CSRG) at UCB.
By the time of 4.3BSD (4.3BSD-Tahoe), software licenses were getting expensive, so the developers decided to rewrite the TCP/IP stack and release the distribution as 4.3BSD Networking Release 1 (4.3BSD Net/1). The kernel source code was also rewritten during move from VAX to Tahoe systems with 4.3BSD-Tahoe, with a separation of machine-dependent and machine-independent code.
After 4.3BSD/Net 1, 4.3BSD-Reno was released as an interim release for 4.4BSD. At the time, DARPA ended the funding of CSRG, so the students wanted to port more of the AT&T UNIX software to be released freely before CSRG disbands, and they rewrote many of the UNIX utilities. This rewrite was released as 4.3BSD Networking Release 2 (4.3BSD Net/2).
Meanwhile, a programmer named William Jolitz was working on porting 4.3BSD-Reno to Intel 80386, and later he rebased to 4.3BSD Net/2. His project was named 386BSD. Another company, named Berkeley Software Design Inc. (BSDi) was developing BSD/386, a proprietary commercial version of BSD for Intel 80386, based on 4.3BSD Net/2. As BSDi was released, AT&T UNIX System Laboratories (USL), the then division of AT&T responsible for UNIX filed a lawsuit against BSDi claiming illegal use of AT&T licensed code, preventing the release of 386BSD and 4.3BSD Net/2 to non UNIX-licensees. This lawsuit was started in 1992.
2. Linux
At that time, Linus wanted some free kernel that works on the 80386, so he decided to write one on his own. He said himself that if BSD386 was available at the time, he wouldn't have developed Linux. So even though BSD was an operating system of its own, its association with UNIX cost its popularity against Linux systems. By the time the lawsuit was settled in 1994, the Linux community had ported over the GNU project to create working distributions of GNU/Linux.
3. GNU's Not UNIX
Now coming to GNU. In 1983, Stallman decided that there should be some free operating system, and he chose to base his system on the principles of UNIX. Cleverly, he chose the name GNU's Not UNIX, because that was one of the reasons that eventually ended up in them not hitting the lawsuit like BSDi did. Unlike BSD, the GNU Project was clean from the beginning, so AT&T would have nothing on them. He also started the FSF 2 years later to support the development of GNU.
4. Association of GNU with Linux
By 1992, two things happened. GNU was developed as a general purpose OS, so they developed the userspace first, while the kernel space remained incomplete, largely because their choice of microkernel design would need careful design choices. At the same time, Linux was developed for 80386, so it ended up delivering a working kernel, without no usable environment. So the Linux community ended up porting the work of the GNU Project by adding patches to GNU software for compatibility, and GNU gladly welcomed their changes. But when a working OS distribution was created, the Linux community said that they are only interested in the development of Linux, and GNU is a separate project. This is how GNU's contribution was neglected for the first time, before people started adding in X and other packages with SLS and Yggdrasil Linux/GNU/X.
Linux also greatly benefitted from the GNU GPL v2 license, which was a product of the GNU Project and FSF. It was GPLv2 that allowed Linux to demand back contributions legally from corporations.
Additionally, Linux refused utilizing GPL v3, because Linus was not concerned about ethical issues as much as developing his own system. For this reason, omitting GNU while choosing to highlight Linux is like taking the spotlight away from the party fought more for our freedoms, while giving it to the neutral party, that plays pretty well with capitalism. Not that Linux itself is evil (evil defined as taking a stance with a harmful idea) for that choice, just like how Linus doesn't even care about mentioning the name Linux. But the people who use the term and are against any mention of GNU could be said to be doing just that. At least some of them. That is, those who do it alongside claiming that copyleft is a disgusting form of license compared to permissive licenses, because it "forces" you to not close-source your derivative works. In this instance, I'll have to take the side of GPL, but I digress.
What is an OS? - Resolving the controversy
People can't agree on whether it's the kernel, or whether it's the kernel + everything in the userspace, excluding application software. This makes people either stick with using the term Linux, or claim that it is Linux/GNU/Freedesktop/systemd/Plasma/Kvantum, which is too complicated, and thus Linux is the only rational short form.
But I think when someone uses terms like Linux/GNU/Freedesktop, they're already missing the point. The use of the word GNU serves several purposes. One is to remember GNU as an important contributor, and secondly, it is to differentiate the system. When we say Linux distribution, people in the Linux community understand that they mean PC OS distributions based on Linux, with the exclusion of ChromeOS, Android-x86 and other JEOS systems. That's because we understand Linux distributions to be "something", and this "something" is what we are trying to specify here.
In my opinion, one main factor is that the desktop distributions we use are POSIX-compliant systems. Now, we have BSD and GNU as the two main POSIX-projects (keeping aside 3rd party NT subsystems like MSYS2, Cygwin, etc.). Microsoft also had a native POSIX subsystem for NT, which lived alongside its OS/2 subsystem, Win32 subsystem and security subsystem. Drawing a parallel with Windows here, I could say that Windows is a Win32/NT system. If we instead used the POSIX subsystem, alone, that would make it a POSIX/NT system, which would be UNIX-like.
So, similarly, our desktop Linux distributions are POSIX systems. There are two kinds of POSIX systems, one of which is BSD, where the kernel and userland are part of the same project. That makes them BSD UNIX, or just BSD POSIX if they want to avoid copyright infringement. The other option is where a POSIX environment is implemented atop the ubiquitous Linux kernel. Such a system would be called POSIX/Linux or UNIX/Linux. But since it is not exactly UNIX, and to avoid copyright infringement, we'll call it by something that claims to be not UNIX, which is the original GNU's Not UNIX!
So we can either call it POSIX/Linux or GNU/Linux, but UNIX/Linux can be problematic. At this point, GNU is a well fitting name, so we might as well use it. But this won't satisfy those who dislike GNU due to years of hatred which I won't be able to fix with any amount of words. So I have a solution for them.
Lunix
The word Lunix is a combination of Linux and UNIX. By using this, we've separated the UNIX-like systems from non-UNIX-like systems such as Android, ChromeOS, etc. We have also solved the problem of concentrating the value of the entire distribution on to one of the many components that makes it a unique OS, which is Linux. Additionally, there is no trace of the word GNU, satisfying all those who hated GNU. Also, there is no issue of copyright infringement, because we did not use the word UNIX explicitly.
But this will further prompt users to ask, but why is it called Lunix when it is Linux? At that point, you can educate the newbies on how Linux is the kernel, and an operating system consists of a kernel and an userland, and the userland in these distributions implement a POSIX system, which is why we call them Lunix, meaning Linux+UNIX. Further, the people who support GNU can educate them on how most of the distributions implement a POSIX system thanks to the GNU Project, and add in how they campaigned for software freedom and were highly influential in bringing about the popularity of open source projects as we see today.
This is all beside the point that I chose the word Lunix because it sounded funny AF. But I hope my ideas were at least useful in changing the mindset about GNU/Linux, and could resolve the conflict in some manner.
2024.05.13 18:57 PoppaSquot The standard characteristics of all Japan's New Religions - including Soka Gakkai - see how many you recognize
I tells ya, so much falls into place here. This comes from Helen Hardacre's book Kurozumikyō and the New Religions of Japan, Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey, 1986. First, some background:
The contemporary religious scene in Japan is commonly divided into the "established religions" (kisei shūkyō) and the "new religions" (shinshūkō). These categories are further divided into Buddhist- and Shintō-derived varieties of each as well as into further subcategories.
The titular "Kurozumikyō" is a Shintō new religion founded in 1814 by the Shintō priest Kurozumi Munetada. As of this publication, it had a total membership of 220,000.
Founded by a priest of the "established" Shintō tradition, it is one of the oldest of the so-called new religions and seems to combine aspects of both new and established types. (p. 3)
THE NEW RELIGIONS OF JAPAN
The new religions and their members represent an important and distinctive sector of Japanese society. In spite of the great variety of their doctrines, new religions share a unity of aspiration and world view significantly different from those of secular society and from the so-called established religions. New religions constitute the most vital sector of Japanese religion today and include perhaps 30 percent of the nation's population in their membership. (p. 3)
A source I read recently noted that the Soka Gakkai grew from poaching members of other new religions; it seems this demographic was the most fluid and changeable of Japan's religious demographic. However, at just 30% of the population, even if the Soka Gakkai had managed to claim 100% of these new religions' memberships, it would still have fallen short of Ikeda's self-defined minimum requirement of 1/3 of the population.
Among the doctrines of the new religions there is great variety, since doctrine frequently originates in revelations to a founder. (p. 5)
Here is the Soka Gakkai's version:
Founders tend to be charismatic individuals who attract a following through faith healing rather than through ordination and textual erudition.
The Soka Gakkai version:
Also here and here and especially HERE - DEFINITELY with the "faith healing".
As far as the "textual erudition" goes, Toda's post-WWII lectures on the Lotus Sutra were expected to be accepted as the "gold standard" of textual interpretation, and today, SGI members study Ikeda's lectures on texts rather than the texts themselves - see here and here. Who needs any priest??
The new religions tend to recruit their following through evangelistic proselytization and dramatic conversion, at least in the first generation. They promise followers "this-worldly-benefits" in the form of healing, solution of family problems, and material prosperity. In ethics they emphasize family solidarity and qualities of sincerity, frugality, harmony, diligence, and filial piety. Between laity and leaders there is only a vague dividing line, and for the most part, anyone may acquire leadership credentials, including women. Frequently the new religions recognize no sacred centers but those of their own history. (pp. 5-6)
While the Soka Gakkai initially embraced pilgrimages ("tozan") to the Nichiren Shoshu Head Temple Taiseki-ji, their regular activities were centered on Soka Gakkai buildings ("kaikan", or "centers") rather than on Nichiren Shoshu temples. In fact, this was an early source of conflict, as the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood justifiably questioned WHY the Soka Gakkai was putting so much more effort and resources into building NEW Soka Gakkai centers than on building Nichiren Shoshu temples, which would have been the proper function of any religion's legitimate lay organization. Add to that the bad optics of Ikeda's cult's attempted steeplejacking of established Nichiren Shoshu temples, and there was DEFINITELY something rotten in Denmark, so to speak. The Soka Gakkai's focus was trained on IKEDA rather than on the priests of the order they supposedly belonged to as a lay organization. That's some fucked up priorities and it was only a matter of time before that became an open, obvious problem. Of course Ikeda hoped to delay that reckoning until he was in a position to seize the entire Nichiren Shoshu religion for himself. Too bad, so sad, the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood headed him off at the pass and spoiled all his beautiful plots.
The world view of the Japanese new religions conceives of the individual, society, nature, and the universe as an integrated system vitalized by a single principle. Every level represents the manifestation of that principle on a larger scale. The relationships among the levels, however, are not static. They must be maintained in balance, harmony, and congruence. These qualities are manifested in conditions of happiness, health, social stability, abundant harvests, and regular succession of the seasons (free of such calamities as flood, drought, and major earthquakes). The opposite conditions (unhappiness, illness, social unrest, scarcity of food, and natural disasters) are symptomatic of a lack of harmony or congruence. Everything is interconnected so that a change in one dimension, no matter how small, eventually ripples out and affects other dimensions in a larger context. Religious practice is a striving for continuous integration of self with the body, society, nature, and the universe. This involves careful management of the most basic components: the self, the faculties of mind and emotion, and the personality. (pp. 11-12)
This thinking was the basis for Nichiren's Rissho Ankoku Ron, or "On Establishing the etc. & whatever".
Here is the chart that illustrates this thinking; you can clearly see the basis for "A great human revolution in just a single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of a nation and, further, can even enable a change in the destiny of all humankind". There is no scientific basis for this kind of delusion; ignorant people just LIKE believing it. "Look how IMPORTANT and INFLUENTIAL I am!! Everything is all about MEEE!!!" The Soka Gakkai has been in existence (in a continuous state) for some 80 years now; if this sort of thing DID happen, we'd see it. We already know Ikeda had such high hopes for his followers, but the truth is that the membership never lived up to Ikeda's expectations. No "world leaders" emerged from Soka Gakkai ranks; they didn't even become rich! That simply isn't something that happens because of "this practice", no matter how much Ikeda misled all the gullibles. Daimoku is obviously NOT "the perfect solution for all problems".
Although the new religions inevitably adopt the system I have just described, they state it in different idioms. They may use Buddhist, Shintō, or colloquial terms for the self, calling it variously the kokoro (heart-mind or heart), konjō (guts), *reikon (spirit), tamashii (soul), and other terms. Similarly, they may name the principle vitalizing all existence by Shintō, Buddhist, or other terms: kami-nature, Buddha-nature, karma, ki, yōki, and so forth. They may predicate the existence of a variety of supernaturals who exist on a different plane than human beings, intervening in human affairs from time to time. These may be kami, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, or ancestors. Alien to the system is the notion of a single deity standing outside the whole and manipulating it by means of an unknowable will. The supernaturals of the integrated system are subject to its rhythms and generally conform to its principles. The system is compatible with a variety of cosmological ideas and world pictures, including horizontal and vertical cosmologies seen in Japanese myths and in Buddhism's many-tiered realms of existence. (pp. 12-14)
Because self-cultivation is the primary task of all, textual erudition, esoteric ritual, and the observance of abstinences are rejected or relegated to secondary significance.
Because "Earthly desires ARE enlightenment", right?? And all that other Buddhism stuff, well, that's all obsolete now, "as useless as last year's calendar", right??
The notion of kokoro is a hallmark of Japanese culture, and it is the central pillar of the world view of the new religions. Consider the following proverb, one that could be endorsed by the new religions and is a stock saying in secular society: "Both suffering and happiness depend on how we bear the kokoro." Kokoro is borne or carried in a certain way, good or bad, and according to that we suffer or are happy. We are in control. An ordinary, nonreligious interpretation of this proverb would say that our attitude toward circumstances determines in large part whether we are happy or unhappy, or that an attitude of "positive thinking" can improve our experience of unfavorable situations even if the circumstances are not thereby altered. (p. 19)
You can see Ikeda alluding to this here:
Even a man who has great wealth, social recognition and many awards may still be shadowed by indescribable suffering deep in his heart. On the other hand, an elderly woman who is not fortunate financially, leading a simple life alone, may feel the sun of joy and happiness rising in her heart each day.
An interpretation of the proverb among the new religions is likely to be much stronger, to hold that human beings certainly have the power to be happy, depending solely on the manner in which one bears kokoro. We need only exercise that power by self-cultivation.
And remember - NO COMPLAINING!!
Moreover, the idea that circumstances can be changed by the power of diligently cultivated kokoro is pervasive. It is a question not only of a change of attitude but sometimes of radical material change, such as an improvement in economic situation or a miraculous healing. It is understood that the cultivated kokoro has the power also to change external persons and events, and that nothing is impossible. Exercising the full power fo the kokoro is possible for anyone who practices self-cultivation through the spiritual disciplines of the particular religious group. (pp. 19-20)
Isn't that the whole basis for the idea of "human revolution"? How else could anyone understand "You can chant for whatever you want!"? Don't the Dead-Ikeda-cult SGI culties love to talk about "making the impossible possible"?? Hmm..I wonder why they never do...🤨
Here Ikeda likens the Soka Gakkai practice to the magic lamp of the "Aladdin" story. And it only works for Soka Gakkai members, of course.
We chant to make the impossible possible, we want extraordinary, not ordinary. Let's get those benefits flowing, let's appreciate those challenges that allow us to grow and win and share those victories with others so that they can be inspired and win. Source
While the terminology of the self is basic to understanding Japanese constructions of self, the patterns of action and affect in which these are embedded constitute the functioning of the world view of the new religions. Here I identify four such patterns:
(1) the idea that "other people are mirrors,"
(2) the exchange of gratitude and repayment of favor,
(3) the quest for sincerity, and
(4) the adherence to paths of self-cultivation.
So much for the supposed "novelty" of Dickeata's supposedly eternal "clear mirror guidance", eh? Oh, and EVERYBODY owes Scamsei and the SGI their eternal gratitude, too, and you NEVER EVER get to finish your "human revolution" ("self-cultivation")!
Each of these patterns represents an indispensable element of Japanese culture, and thus their implementation in Japanese religions is not unique. (p. 21)
Nope. The Soka Gakkai is just bog standard for a Japanese New Religion. Nothing unique or special. Just like all the rest.
The idea that other people are mirrors makes the individual totally responsible in all circumstances. Although the burden is heavy, there is also a tacit message that the self can control any situation. Placing blame and responsibility on the individual also denies the idea that "society" can be blamed for one's problems; hence concepts of exploitation and discrimination are ruled out of consideration. On the whole the new religions are uninterested in political action to improve society; to them it is a question of individuals improving themselves individually and collectively through self-cultivation. (p. 23)
Remember, this author ISN'T talking about Soka Gakkai here! This a feature of ALL Japan's new religions!
Since self-cultivation is the primary determiner of all human affairs, notions of fate or divine wrath (karma or bachi, for example) are reinterpreted, ignored, or denied.
Or introduced when necessary to blame a member when the promises of SGI leaders are proven empty and false. It's always the MEMBERSHIP's fault somehow, never that the teachings are wrong or deceptive.
In like manner, because of the primacy of self-cultivation, the concept of pollution cannot be fully credited, and this opens the door to greater participation by women than is the case in the established religions.
In the case of the Soka Gakkai, "greater participation by women" has been implemented as "greater exploitation of women". The women of the Soka Gakkai were expected to deliver daily newspapers for no pay throughout the Soka Gakkai's history; it is only recently that their numbers have declined so catastrophically and they have aged so much that the Soka Gakkai finally had to contract with a delivery service - which of course Soka Gakkai has to PAY now. Newspapers are SO much more profitable when you can find some suckers to deliver them at no cost to YOU!
Thus the new religions stress unquestioning performance of their established disciplines, fully aware that the demand for uncomprehending obedience (at least iat the beginning) will cause the convert frustration. Also involved as a minor theme is the pedagogical principle that "physical action can be perceived as isomorphic with spiritual change." Thus, for example, polishing floors can be assumed to "polish" the self. If one enters through form, eventually the kokoro will follow.
Speaking of exploiting women, who else heard that when women were cleaning the toilets for free at the local SGI center, they were "cleaning their karma"??
The hardship entailed is not to be avoided; no one denies that it is punishing to polish floors by hand, recite sutras, or endure cold water ablutions. Hardship in itself is virtuous and confers compassion and maturity.
Isn't that the essence of SGI's much-vaunted "youth division training"? Basically, it's SGI leaders getting off on forcing young people to do all sorts of scut work and to engage in unpleasant activities just because they can - somebody has to do the grunt work, right? Make THEM do it! Tell them it's "training" when actually it's just training them to allow themselves to be exploited. For a funny example of this attitude, see how this colossal doofus was trying to cajole and coerce his employee into joining SGI before he aged out of the youth division, so he could get him some of that gooooood "youth division training"!!
Meanwhile, now I worry about Chad, who has only a few months left to obtain YMD training, to whom I had to slip September Living Buddhism under his door, since his subscription is on the internet, and I want him to start working on the Introductory Exam material. Yesterday he did not answer or reply when he was supposed to be at work. (He is paid per day of work from his home.) Today when I arrived he was not even there. So I have been chanting for his welfare. He recently reported to me a medical difficulty he has that may be interfering with his efforts, or worse.
That's ONE way to duck an annoying self-important SGI stalker-nag! "Sorry, can't talk - have the plague..."
All the new religions agree that a person's real potential cannot be fulfilled without suffering, and in this they share with secular society the suspicion about someone who has failed that perhaps kurō ga tarinai, "the person hasn't suffered enough." That is, if one had endured sufficient trials before the present ordeal, one could have conquered this hardship. Accordingly it is important to establish how much leaders and founders have suffered in the course of their own self-cultivation. (p. 28)
See More myths about how the young Ikeda suffered so much and was so sickly wah wah
All problems can be traced to insufficient cultivation of self. Thus it is misguided to expect fundamental social change from political ideology. Instead, society can be improved only through collective moral improvement, the doctrine of meliorism. Similarly, attempting to cure disease simply by treating the body alone is useless. Healing can come about only through rededication to ethical values; hence medicine is effective only in a provisional way. Education and secular achievements apart from faith and cultivation of self are houses of cards, castles on sand. Accordingly, media-sponsored presentation of thoroughly secularized views of life are disapproved. (p. 14)
You can see the clearest examples of this thinking in the teachings of Ikeda and the Soka Gakkai from the 1960s, before people understood how immediate and pervasive "political ideology" could effect fundamental social change, as in the US when the anti-race-mixing "anti-miscegenation" interracial marriage legal prohibitions were swept away in the US Supreme Court's 1967 judgment on "Loving v. Virginia". That changed society more fundamentally and pervasively than any religion's doctrines that people's "hearts" must be changed FIRST before anyone could hope to see societal change realized, or in the terms above, "collective moral improvement". No. Remove unjust laws and establish penalties for behaving unjustly, and voilà! Society changes!
See SGI is actively OPPOSED to social justice and thus will NEVER contribute meaningfully to world peace and More on why SGI will never make any significant changes to society.
Back when Japan's medical system was primitive, with limited availability, the new religions advertised "faith healing", as seen above and here. But as medical care improved and, most importantly, became widely accessible, that became people's healing option of choice, so the new religions (and all the rest) had to drop it as a selling point, because nobody was buying it any more. Within the ignorant and indoctrinated ranks of SGI members, we can STILL see claims of "faith healing"; they apparently don't realize this isn't a compelling sales pitch any more. Except that in house, the superstitious, magical-thinking culties still eat it up with a spoon 🙄
But you can see Ikeda here explaining that medicine is unnecessary to treat various ills; there must be a "faith" component or the treatment will inevitably be ineffective. OR that having faith will make even a nonsensical nontreatment effective! Also slamming medicine as harmful and condemning members as somehow "deserving" of terrible illnesses.
And remember when Ikeda told "girls" they didn't need to go to college? That was fun. And how Icky denigrated university graduates??
Let's not forget how the Soka Gakkai has always been anti-union and has never established any charitable services anywhere, not even for the needy within its own struggling membership.
Lacking justification for a strong differentiation between the religious lives of priests and laity, the tendency to make the laity central is strong and pervasive. (p. 14)
This was a primary issue within the Soka Gakkai that festered until Ikeda brought it to a full boil out of his obsessive desire to BE the object of worship. The Soka Gakkai/Nichiren Shoshu alliance, while expedient for the Soka Gakkai and undeniably profitable for Nichiren Shoshu, was nonetheless an uneasy alliance, given the Soka Gakkai's defining characteristics as a "new religion" and Nichiren Shoshu's "established religion" status. Those two simply don't mix. Especially on this last point, you can see that it is a characteristic of a "new religion" to have the fundamental attitude that "priests are unnecessary". Ikeda simply wanted to USE Nichiren Shoshu for his OWN convenience, in service to HIS plans, instead of directing the Soka Gakkai to function as a legitimate lay organization whose focus was their religion, Nichiren Shoshu. 2024.05.13 18:29 perfthrowawa26 Keep running into Bait-And-Switch marketing/management Jobs.
I’m a rising Junior in college. As a student with no internship experience, i’m desperate to get one. I’ve been mass applying to all of them. Small companies, large companies, startups… etc. But something that I’ve seem to come across are these listings for ‘marketing’ internships that are a coverup for direct sales. I’ve had two interviews so far with two different small ‘marketing’ companies, and they both were very similar in what they do. They empathize heavily on commission based door-to-door sales for ATT and are trying to get you to become a manager as quickly as possible so you can be earning six figures by next year. So i’m going to do a break down on both of the companies so yall can keep on the look out for similar companies as a college student looking for quick opportunities.
The first company (calling it Happy Inc) They call themselves a ‘Marketing Agency’ on Google and their listings are named ‘Business Management Consulting’ and ‘Marketing’. Some key job responsibilities: ‘Like the hospitality industry, the primary purpose of the Business Management Consultant is to meet and exceed company sales goals in conjunction with cultivating a long-term relationship with our client’s customers’ ‘Understanding clients’ products to properly explain services and benefits to consumers and answer any questions so they get what they genuinely need’ They tried to hide their actual business model, but after the interview, I went back and it was kinda obvious they were a hinting at being direct sales. I just, again, desperate for internship experience. And after rejection after rejection, I jumped on the opportunity when someone actually wanted to conduct an interview with me. And this was the first one I had run into, so I had no knowledge on these companies. ——————————————————— The second company (Fresh Inc) hid it much better. But again, I should have known. They called themselves a ‘Consulting’ company on Google. Their listing title was ‘Customer Service Representative’. And encouraged greatly for you to apply if you have experience in retail, customer service, hospitality, or servehostess relations. During the first interview, they claimed they had three different departments: Sales, Marketing, and Management. They made it seem like it was all separate and that you were only doing the marketing portion. ——————————————————- Honestly, you would have thought it was the same company. They both had VERY similar business models, so here are a few exmaples:
Both did a very simple, easy going group zoom interview for the first round. Then did face to face for second round.
Both congratulated me on getting to second round claiming that ‘alot of people to get to this stage’.
Both spent an EXTRAORDINARY amount of time informing me about the business model, what exactly they do, the pay, and the schedule. It seems like they were trying to convince me to even join their team rather than me trying to convince them that I’m a good fit for their company.
Both had ATT as their biggest client and only focused on ATT. Which confused me. Because they both claimed that they had other companies they marketed for. If y’all are such a good company and market for others, why are we ONLY focusing on ATT?.. You just forgot about your other business clients because ATT is a big, known company? I believe that ATT is their only client and they both lied about marketing for others to seem more credible.
Both empathized that you will face ‘challenges’ whithin the company, especially in the field (aka the neighborhood) doing the sales. Which basically translated that people most likely close the door on your face, yell at you, wont answer the door, or will tell you to go away. Which is why I feel like they target people who have worked in retail/fast food, because they know you’ve probably gotten yelled at by a customer before.
As stated before, both are trying to get you to become a high paying manager within less than a year. It was actually ridiculous when they were trying to explain it. You do the entry level D2D sales for about 2-6 weeks, depending on your work ethic and determination of getting sales. Then you immediately get promoted to manager. Fresh Inc called them ‘campaign managers’ where you’re the ones training the entry level people to do sales, conducting interviews, etc. You do this for about 6-8 months. Then you start magically working with the higher ups and can get your own office to start your own business…
Both empathize on growth, experience, and success. And they also almost got me with this because that’s literally all im looking for. I don’t really mind the pay rate on any job (but i would not do commission). I just want to get an internship to get me in the business world and for my resume.
Speaking of pay, they both had salary pay rates on their applications. But in the 2nd round interviews, they quickly sneak in that you get commission pay only, up until the higher up position. Then they make it seem like its guaranteed that you’re going to make the sales and get money weekly at the highest rate you can (for entry level, they both estimated it to be: $500-$800).
Lastly, they both try to sell you the benefits of travel. Happy inc had just came back from Mexico for a team bonding experience, and Fresh Inc was going to Punta Canta the week after my interview. All expenses paid by ATT…
Also, I go to college in Texas. My mom recently just moved down here from our hometown in Saint Louis, MO. Yes, we have dealt with door salesmen in STL. But my mom said ever since she moved to Texas, there has been a plethora of people knocking on her door trying to sell her something. Also, the Happy Inc manager that was interviewing me told me that they still knock on doors that have the ‘no soliciting’ signs… The fact that people even have those signs show that this is a big thing down in Texas. Idk if it’s a location based thing, but it seems like its a common occurence down here in Texas.
Im not sure if this is considered a pyramid scheme. I have been doing research on these companies after after the Fresh Inc interview, and it seems like its been a thing for a while. But I just find it frustrating because I think I finally found a good opportunity after months of searching and piles of rejections and its just one of these… Please stay on the look out for these types of jobs.
2024.05.13 17:55 LexiJones219 I'm posting my "rant" anywhere lol. My work SUCKS and I need to see what others think
I cant post photos of my "rant", so im going to copy and paste it.
My "rant" that my manager will hear if she listens unlike my supervisors.
Week of 5/16 SHIFTS WITHOUT BREAKS Thurs 2:30pm-9:15pm Fri 9:30am-9:00pm Sat 9:30am-9:30pm Sun 9:30am-9:00pm Mon 10:30am-6:00pm Tues10:30am-6:00pm Wens 10:30am-6:00pm
TOTAL HOURS WITHOUT BREAKS: 64.25 Hours
Total overtime: 24.25 Hours
Week of 5/23 SHIFTS WITHOUT BREAKS Thurs 10:30am-5:30pm Fri 9:30am-5:30pm Sat OFF Sun OFF Mon 9:30am-5:30pm Tues 10:30am-5:30pm Weds 10:30am-5:30pm
TOTAL HOURS WITHOUT BREAKS: 49 Hours
Total overtime: 9 Hours
If I were to work all 12 shifts, that would be 113.25 hours worked. For both weeks, 80 hours total, I would be owed approximately $1,040. Now let's factor in the overtime. I have a total of 33.25 hours of overtime. That would be 13×1.5 for time and a half, I would have to be paid $19.5. Now that we have the time and a half pay figured out, we would multiply 19.5×33.25, which is $648.375, or $648.38 due to rounding. Now we add how much I would be paid for 80 hours (1,040) to the 33.25 over time hours (648.38). 1,040+648.38 is $1,688.38.
Federal law is 40 hours a week. This excludes overtime. Federal law also states any hours OVER 40 hours in ONE WEEK is time and a half (1.5) of the employees normal pay.
Let's set pay aside and talk about the 2 work weeks. 5/16 is a 7 day work week. State nor federal law state how many hours an employee is legally allowed to work, but ethically, you would want an employee to NOT get burned out working everyday open to close, especially those who work the rides, food, merchandise, entertainment, etc. On top of the 7 day work load, following into 5/23, I am scheduled 2 days before I get even one day off. That is 9 consecutive work days. No employee should have to work 9 consecutive days and be the face the guests see. Guests should not have to see an overworked, burnt out, and exhausted employee. This needs to be fixed immediately. I have 6 hours a day, 20 hours a week, 3 days a week set for my shift preferences as to not burn myself out, but as you can see by my work schedule above, my area part-time AND full time supervisors do not follow shift preferences. I was also injured on the job the 28th of April in 2024, which is still ongoing. Not to mention, when I got injured on 4/28/2024, I had to work the rest of my shift despite being in pain because the supervisors would rather hang out at other rides than take over for an employee who is sick or injured. I have noticed they hang out at Escape from Pompeii when I go on my breaks and head to Italy EBA since England EBA is not opened yet and way past its scheduled opening.
I had one shift in the week of 5/9, and had to call out due to being in an immobilized sling for my shoulder. At what point does an absence get excused? You would think the supervisors would care about the well-being, physically and mentally, of their co-workers. Area 1 needs an overhaul and/or retraining of their part-time and full-time supervisors as they do not care nor understand how to properly take care of the people who work the rides while they walk around or hang out at different rides in the area.
Below is the breakdown of the math.
Equations: 64.25+49=113.25 - Total Hours Scheduled 40×13=520 - normal 40 hour week with hourly pay 520×2=1,040 - 2 weeks worth 64.25-40=24.25 - total overtime for 5/16 49-40=9 - total overtime for 5/23 24.25+9=33.25 - total overtime for the 2 weeks 13×1.5=19.5 overtime pay 19.5×33.25=648.375 - pay total for 33.25 overtime 648.38 - rounding to the nearest cent 1,040+648.38=1,688.38 - total for 80 hours and 33.25 overtime pay
In total, if you want an injured, overworked, and burned out employee, it would be a grand total of $1,688.38. Please take this into consideration with all ambassadors (injured or not) working $13 an hour and considered "part-time employees" when this is a full time schedule with overtime. It is not worth it. I would like my schedule fixed to my shift preferences. Thank you.
The things that caused me to due this are 1. Lack of care from my area supervisors 2. Scheduling me on days that I don't want to work 3. Scheduling me without checking up on the injury or wanting to know what is going on (goes into number 1) 4. Being scheduled for 7 days, open to close (we come in 30 minutes early to try to open on time) 5. Having 2 more days scheduled on top of the 7 days already there (total of 9 days without a day off) 6. Being fed up with how I'm treated by my supervisors. 7. Being burned out since the injury (I keep saying injury. It's a shoulder injury that is classified as a sprain, but to follow up with a doctor if the pain doesn't get better. I don't have insurance, so it's been put off for too long) 8. Hoping the manager will listen, get the park ops president involved and see if we can settle before I go to file workers comp (not implied in the notes, but mentioning injury and them seeing me in a sling should scare them enough)
Just a rant, but I don't know what else to do.
I don't want to have comments saying they work mote than what I'm scheduled or that I should be grateful for the shifts. I'm tired, in pain, and tired of the bull my supervisors put me through.
If your wondering, yes, this is an amusement park in Virginia. You can name it because it will be very obvious.
2024.05.13 17:43 ranc1 Broken Looking-Glass Self is Social anxiety
What is Looking-Glass Self? This is concept in sociology, discovered in 1902 by Cooley - and his theory states that we form our own identity based on what we think other people think who we are. In fact, the whole sociology is based on social anxiety- the very same social anxiety that psychiatry (CBT and DSM) are pathologizing and trying to cure and destroy and present as mental illness.
Without social anxiety, without ability to worry what other people think about us - we would lose social skills, empathy and civilization norms - such as not eating others.
"If it weren't for the nervous people in the world, we'd all still be eating each other." The Misfits (1961) https://youtu.be/h56iL7vK5Y0
When people consume chicken - they eat the flesh of animals because there is no ability to connect with the slaughtered animals as conscious beings who are able to think and perceive us. So when we destroy social anxiety- our ability to worry what other people think - we will become psychopaths, sociopaths and narcissists. This also provide us with important information of self expression and holding toxic people accountable - by stating the facts and truth. Toxic people learn to suppress social anxiety - and this gives them ability to be cruel. And the only way to probe their delusions is to speak the truth to them. And that is why toxic people mock and go into hysteria mode - because their suppressed conscience and morality and ethics are eating them from inside.
Dolphins are not caught with smiles but cruelly with hooks, Michele. One day you will learn to be cruel. Caravaggio (1986) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GF12uM_GK74
Sociology is based on social anxiety - that we form our own identity based on society. We need other people to provide us information who we are and how to express ourselves. The language is the very first thing that society gives us to define who we are - by using the very words that society is using.
Theories of the Self
William James (1890): A person has "as many social selves as there are individuals who recognize him and carry and image of him in their minds"
Charles Cooley (1902): Views of self reflect the standpoints of significant others in our lives ("looking-glass self")
George Herbert Mead (1934): We imagine the perspectives of others and incorporate these into our self views - and that this occurs continuously as we interact with others on an ongoing, moment to moment basis.
Having a distorted looking glass (incorrectly imagining others’ opinions of us) can cause bad feelings, or a negative self-image. https://wa01001786.schoolwires.net/cms/lib/WA01001786/Centricity/Domain/70/Socialization%20Notes.pdf
What happens when we are around toxic people - is that our identity is deformed as well. CBT claims, along with DSM, that our worry what other people think - is personality disorder, called Borderline:
Reality testing is ability to perceive reality properly. Without too much deviation from facts. Borderline refer to you if want to know anything about reality. “Do you think so too?” Narcissist will tell you "am I not genius". YT Richard Grannon & Prof. Sam Vaknin about Fantasy
Borderline personality disorder is a mental health condition that affects the way people feel about themselves and others, making it hard to function in everyday life. It includes a pattern of unstable, intense relationships, as well as impulsiveness and an unhealthy way of seeing themselves. (Mayo Clinic)
The truth is - if we are around toxic people, their criticism will affect our self worth. Their constant nagging, constant nitpicking, constant error finding and constant drama about anything that moves - will have an effect on our sense of stability and security in the world. This is not disorder. This is simply how society works. In order to heal our mental health issues - we need to repair connections with other people - which may include minimizing exposure to toxic people or cutting toxic people completely off from our lives.
We will never feel secure, confident, worthy - if there are toxic people around us who are criticizing us and others all the time.
Improving our relationships is improving our mental health. William Glasser
Interpersonal strife with those close to us leads to rifts and resentments that produce symptoms of mental illness; these problems are, in fact, the logical consequence of troubled relationships. Glasser emphasizes that lasting psychological problems are usually caused by problems in our personal relationships (rather than signifying a biochemical abnormality in the brain), and distress can be remedied through repairing these relationships without recourse to psych drugs. DK psychology book, WILLIAM GLASSER
Being able to feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health; safe connections are fundamental to meaningful and satisfying lives. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk
In another words: feel safe with other people = mental health
The single most important issue for traumatized people is to find a sense of safety in their own bodies. 🟦 Bessel A. van der Kolk
Toxic people cause social anxiety. That is why social anxiety is called social+anxiety. There is social element that is causing the anxiety. There is social factor contributing to anxiety. It is not called self-anxiety. We did not catch social anxiety by walking randomly in the street when it was rainy, so we caught a common cold. It is not like we felt bored in our lives so we invented neuroticism to keep us active and occupied. Social anxiety must start in childhood with ACE and ACoA where we learned from early on - that life is dangerous, that people are not safe, that we must worry to be hyper-vigilant and that we are unworthy if we make any kind of mistakes. We learned that our flaws, imperfections and mistakes are our core personality - abnormal and inept.
Society attacks early, when the individual is helpless. B. F. Skinner
This is how we end up with Broken Looking Glass Self. Distorted Looking Glass Self. We end up with operant conditioning - to worry what other people think in such way that we attempt to think for the other person ahead of time, so that they do not get mad of us - and then attempt, we try hard not to make other people mad. And how we execute this operant conditioning - depends on our background, people around us and punishments to which we were exposed as kids. Most socially anxious learn to keep quiet. To shut up. To self censor. And to self blame. If the other person is angry or hysterical - we will feel responsible for their mood swings and we will try hard to fix their emotions and their problems. Soon - we spread this fixing on other people, who are not angry - and we create fake social mask that is always pleasant and nice and helpful to anyone, especially if they are angry and rude and intrusive. We learned to interpret their anger as our fault and our abnormality. Looking glass self is broken - because it does not reflect any more - now we imagine how to please other people without using looking glass (mirror) - as all people use it.
Other people are there as information post. They broadcast who they are, many of them mask their true Self and present fake version of themselves, their social mask. Our brain will naturally form opinion about us through the words and opinions and non-verbal gestures from other people, strangers or our acquaintances. This part is totally normal. This is not disorder. This is not illness. The disorder starts when we try hard to fix other people's conclusions about us by making ourselves small and by changing our routine so that we soothe the other person. Instead of CBT techniques - all that we need to do here is to allow other people to think whatever they choose to think about us. Simply allow other people to hate us and leave it at that.
We really have to work very hard at changing our programming because we don't understand we're upset because someone else has a perception of us that we're uncomfortable with. And we challenge this person's perception of us. We're upset that people think this about us. Something amazing happens when you begin to accept that other people are allowed to have their own faulty perception of you. 🟥 Lisa A. Romano Breakthrough Life coach Inc.
For the next step, sociology will also help us. CBT and DSM, psychiatry is telling us concrete steps which we must take - and morally and ethically speaking - this is illegal. When someone orders us what we must do - this is called manipulation and coercive control. This way anyone who is psychopathic and narcissistic can climb, grab and push their way to powerful position of ordering others what to do - and then evil people can easily manipulate and control the masses. This is what happens with psychiatry. Psychology on the other hand explains concepts - psychology does not order us what to do in life and how to react. That is why Humanistic psychology is healthy.
It is the client who knows what hurts, what directions to go, what problems are crucial, what experiences have been deeply buried. Carl Rogers
In the same manner as Humanistic Psychology and IFS Model - sociology also has the similar term that allows clients freedom in own choices - which is called Thomas theorem.
The Thomas theorem is a theory of sociology which was formulated in 1928 by William Isaac Thomas and Dorothy Swaine Thomas: If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences. In other words, the interpretation of a situation causes the action. This interpretation is not objective. (wiki)
If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences. - formulated in 1928 by William Isaac Thomas and Dorothy Swaine Thomas
This means - that no other person can objectively tell us what is the best way to go in life. We need our inner GPS, our intuition, our common sense, other people as well - to form our reality and our construct of the future where we are headed. With CBT and DSM - we do not have this freedom. With CBT and DSM - we are pathologized instead - and all our focus is spent on fixing our symptoms - we are literally self consuming ourselves with CBT.
In real life- real life situations will not allow us to form rigid mindset. Any other person, any other situation in life - good or bad - is always unique and different. Sometimes it is great that we shut up and that we self censor ourselves - especially if we are tired and we don't want to harm other people with our nagging and complaints that will go off as soon as we get to sleep and rest. On the other hand - many situations in life that are triggering our social anxiety require from us to self express, that we talk out our truth - no matter how much manipulative people attempt to shut us up with mocking and shaming.
So when we allow other people to form toxic conclusions about us - we need to know that we can rely on our brain, on our intuition to tell us how to react and what to do and how to behave. We have this mechanism inside us. We do not need to pathologize ourselves with CBT. CBT will tell us that we must be assertive in order to handle toxic people. This is horrible advice because:
"If you have been the scapegoat in a narcissistic family system, the concept of setting a boundary is laughable. You would be telling them exactly how to hurt you, and they would happily oblige. Also, trying to set a boundary in a calm and tactful way would be met by resistance in the form of mocking and ridicule, attempting to bait the scapegoat into anger, which would prove you are the problem." YT kingbee9778
"I feel gaslighted by the therapy mantras of “ you have to teach people how to treat you “ ,(setting boundaries). No you don’t and no you can’t. First of all, it’s not my job to teach an adult how to behave like one and quite frankly, it’s a trap and a drain hole. Secondly, I DON’T CONTROL OTHER PEOPLE. They will do what they want, especially if they have the tiniest ounce of power over you." YT gertrudewest4535
When we follow CBT - we will repeat the broken Looking Glass Self when we exposure ourselves to social situations - and social anxiety will not go away - because we will continually process the same ways reality and other people in a manner that is toxic to us - through seeking approval from other people, through self flagellation, through harsh inner critic and internalized toxic shame.
To fix broken Looking-Glass Self means fixing social anxiety: when we are afraid of what other people think about us. With CBT we self pathologize our normal reaction to worry what other people think about us. This is not disorder, it is totally normal to have awareness that other people are thinking about us.
Many social anxiety coaches will use "Spotlight effect" as proof that other people do not worry about us:
"The spotlight effect is the psychological phenomenon by which people tend to believe they are being noticed more than they really are."
In toxic contact - toxic people - those same ones who trigger our social anxiety - do notice anything about us. In normal population - other people will think about us and we will define each other - through the process called The Michelangelo phenomenon - where we chisel each other into better version, where we change our toxic habits that hurt us as much as they hurt other people. In unhealthy, toxic social dynamics there will be the opposite: Golem Effect and Crab mentality. Where there is competition and where other person is perceived as threat and someone to pull down.
A lot of content on mental health in mainstream media does not cover the unique corner that survivors of narcissistic abuse live in. Not one mention of being in any kind of toxic relationship. “Avoid your triggers” is not easy in narcissistic relationships. When the discomfort is living in your house or down the street or in the next office. It was not even rumination, but reality. And the constant exposure means you don't get a break. 🟥 DoctorRamani https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uusKWmjUk6k
I'm not setting boundary with these people. “Don't do this with me”. “Don't say this with me”. It's all internal. Because if you try to set a boundary with someone who's narcissistic or antagonistic – it's never going to work. And I think it's unsafe guidance to give.
With this dangerous person no. But what are you willing to tolerate. How can you protect yourself emotionally. What access can you remove. Move these people from VIP section.
With broken Looking-Glass Self - we end up being trapped in toxic people's minds. Similar to horror movie / book The Cell from 2000. Even when we develop Who cares attitude, and when we consciously try to block and build walls away from toxic people, when we try hard to push down and suppress toxic people - we are still trapped in their reality of what they potentially might think about us. This is why CBT is not working - because CBT tries hard to convince us to use suppression as method to block social anxiety. And we cannot block other people - we need other people for our identity and our self worth - where there is healthy interaction called Interdependence. Toxic people behave in codependent way - they see other people as competition and this creates codependency. They need other people like vampires need blood - to exploit someone's attention, someone's focus, money, time and or resources of any kind. It is like give me, give me, give me - and provide nothing in return. With social anxiety we end up giving others without observing if the other person is emotionally invested in us at all. It ends up and one side interaction, exploitation really. Social anxiety means suppress anger as well. We learned to push our anger away - and this attracts toxic people who count on our silence and understanding and toxic empathy - knowing that they can cross boundaries of social interaction in their favor and we won't make any kind of protest. Then our own only protection - is avoidance. Therefore - social anxiety is natural defense mechanism against dangerous criminally insane psychopaths who are abusing their power position against ourselves.
In our teen years we experiences bully experience - after years of exposure to ACoA and ACE (constant criticism and constant drama at home) - so we generalized the belief that we cannot trust other people - and we learned that we process reality through broken Looking Glass Self - where we appease other people with our decisions - by being afraid what other people may think badly of us - since we were pressed and pushed into equating social rejection and our self worth as if they are one of the same. And psychiatry - instead of explaining us that it is totally normal to worry what other people think - CBT explains us that this is abnormality. This faulty explanation from medical industry is adding more trauma and more toxic shame and it gives our inner critic free reign to self abuse us - because we believe we are abnormal and ill if we worry what other people thin about us. In reality - all people worry about others. Even psychopaths worry what other people will think, along with narcissists - because they know that they need to form fake social mask of charm in order to seduce new victims into their agenda of exploiting and manipulating others.
Looking-Glass Self tells us - that we simply allow toxic people to form bad opinion about us in their heads - and that we absolutely do nothing to change this image that toxic people freely choose to believe about us in their heads.
You're no longer going to play the game of what can I do differently to get them to behave differently – because the answer is to that is nothing. That's radical acceptance. It takes long time. And it's not just accepting their behavior is not going to change, it's also the way it affects you is also not going to change. Just because you radically accept doesn't mean that somebody screaming at you is going to hurt any less- it does,it hurts a lot 🟥 Dr. Ramani - Terri Cole https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSHI5N-w5sk
Other people will hurt us. They will say mean and untrue things about us. They will attack us - this has nothing to do with who we are. Their choice to harm and hurt other person - is abnormality in their brain. Normal healthy sane people do not attack others. Normal healthy sane people have ability to emotionally regulate themselves. Person who does not have this ability - is sick and mentally ill. And this has nothing to do with us. We are not the ones who can cure them by changing our behavior.
Lundy Bancroft: "Abuse is NOT caused by bad relationship dynamics. You can't manage your partner's abusiveness by changing your behaviour. But he wants you to think you can."
The pain that we feel when toxic people attack us, verbally or physically - is normal pain, we need this pain as the instruction for us what to do with severely damaged people around us.
If you are not feeling pain, anger and sadness while you are taking in psychological abuse or something similar – you are going to end up in those situations over and over again –because you are not logging information that your body telling 🟥Heidi Priebe https://youtube.com/watch?v=GTQohPaGnSY
People say it bothers me when they say these things. I say, because they say bothersome things. I don't want you to lose that part of you. That part is good index what is okay, what's not. From that point – excavation. A person pulling their true self out of their relationships. If you grew up with narcissistic parent, it was a true self that never even got to develop. It's how much your identity got co-opted. What do I like, what do I stand for. 🟥 Dr. Ramani - Terri Cole https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSHI5N-w5sk
The core of narcissistic person is very fragile. That's why they lose it when you critique them. Or give them feedback. Or don't read their mind. Or don't do exactly what they want. And that's why they use all kinds of tactics like manipulation, gaslighting, invalidation, dismissiveness, competitiveness, betrayal. Some of them are tactics, some are unemphatic behavior. And it gives them the upper hand in relationship. Control, power gives them supply. 🟥 Dr. Ramani - Cole https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSHI5N-w5sk
With social anxiety - we do not need psychiatry. Socially anxious need sociology. It is after all social issue. Social anxiety is anxiety that is connected to society - the name itself reveals this crucial aspect: society, social, societal. Psychiatry will only leave us lacking and with belief that something is horribly wrong with us, when we are around toxic people:
DSM doesn't explain anything. So many therapies and particularly CBT and others are just so focused on extinguishing symptoms which were once strategies of survival. And it doesn't make sense that you want to extinguish – we want eventually to move away from these symptoms and these strategies but I certainly don't want to pathologize them or look at them as somehow defective because they have saved our lives. 🟥 Transforming Trauma Episode 21 IFS & NARM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRTHacVAwdk
When we stop self pathologizing our social anxiety - we will unburden ourselves with toxic idea that feeling pain is abnormal and sick. And it will give us energy to start looking what is causing this pain - instead of focusing ourselves on chasing the symptoms. Without the stigma and labels - we will have much more resources at our disposal to handle difficult people in life who are causing our social anxiety in the first place.
With social anxiety - we need to learn about the Cooley's concept Looking-Glass Self and other terms from sociology. Instead of pathologizing our social reactions - we simply need information to confirm us that we are not abnormal and inept as CBT paints the socially anxious. We need information to learn what our rights are.
Five themes of microaggression against people with mental illnesses
1. Invalidation
When other people dismiss their illness or symptoms through minimizing their experience, symptomizing their normal experiences, and patronizing
2. Assumption of inferiority
When other people assume that people with mental illness have lower intelligence, are incompetent, and that they do not have control
3. Fear of mental illness
When other people fear them because they believe that they may be dangerous or unpredictable
4. Shaming of mental illness
When other people tell them that they shouldn't let others know about their mental illness
5. Second class citizen attitudes
When other people treat them as if they don't have the same rights as the dominant group of society.
Mental Health Forum, 2016
Diagnosis is not an excuse to be selective about their rights. Autistic not weird
Healing the Broken Looking-Glass Self means learning about the mentality - which we never had chance to learn in our developmental years. Other children learned this concept via keeping connections with other people. We - started to avoid people. Even when we were around other people - we pulled our investment emotionally with other people - and this way we never learned that other people are safe. We developed the stump growth - that is being stuck in age 12, when we started to avoid people. Similar to the plant that cannot grow roots in small basin or tree/plant that is stumped in growing due to some kind of obstacle to grow upright. Our growth was shaped from the perspective of not trusting other people - because they harmed us. Other people learned to develop certain amount of trust. They learned to filter out the bad people. And they learned that they are safe to express themselves - without being punished for it. This is why their social anxiety is in normal threshold. They will experience stress and then behave in anti-social manner, they will express their anger without problems - because they were never pushed into forming their self worth through worry what their tormentors might think about them. So it is not like social anxiety is abnormality or sickness - it is simply that non-socially anxious people were lucky enough to grow in healthy ambient, and that is their secret. They were not stronger. They were not more competent. They were not better or superior to the socially anxious. They simply had privilege and entitlement that helped them over-pass developmental years without fearing other people. Their mechanisms how to handle triggers - are mostly unhealthy (lacking empathy) - but their Looking glass self was not broken. With interaction with other people, with other children, they learned naturally to allow difficult people to hate them. Instead of worry - that is found in social anxiety - they simply turned their focus onto other people. With social anxiety - we do not have other people, we have no one to turn to, since we learned that other people are painful and traumatic. We never learned that hanging around with other people is enjoyable experience - and if someone is rude, toxic and abnormal - that we are allowed to focus and place our attention to better, healthier people around us.
In shame culture ambient - we will learn that other people criticism is reflection of our worth - and that is Broken Looking-Glass Self. That we cannot feel good about ourselves until other person reflects positive words about us to us:
Young American explained why she left Croatia:
"In Croatia people constantly express intrusive opinion about matters which are none of their business. The most irritating things were rude people."
Young American explained why she escaped from Croatia:
"Often I heard Croats intruding why am I eating something, or commenting about what I wore. There is no such thing in America, we allow people to be what they want to be. People here are strange as if I am inside toxic relationship."
Don't look to the approval of others for your mental stability. 🟦 Karl Lagerfeld
We will heal social anxiety trauma with healing our choice to stay stuck around toxic people. We can cut toxic people - even when we are unable to leave them physically - by severing the trauma bonding in our mind - that is broken Looking-Glass Self.
No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. Eleanor Roosevelt
Yes, toxic people are pathological liars, They spread gossip. They create drama and hysteria. Toxic people do not have word toxic stuck on their forehead. Toxic people will not behave toxically in front of others - because they depend to look good in the eyes of other people - so they also have Looking-Glass Self no matter how much they said that they do not care what other people think about them. Therefore - social anxiety is clear indication that we are around toxic people. Toxic people do not allow us to express ourselves - and they use various methods of coercive control to manipulate their targets. The first step is to sever this trauma bonding - by allowing them to hate us.
That we basically stop impressing others.
Don't try to impress others. ✝️ Bible, Philippians 2-3
Cooley said our sense of Self comes from how we think other people see us. “I am not what I think I am. I am not what you think I am; I am what I think you think I am.” Other people's reflections of us and how we think about those images they have of us help create our sense of Self. Grades from teachers can reflect back to us an image of ourselves that we then internalize and becomes our self-perception. They effect self-image. 🟥 The Looking glass self https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1X1wwTCuZBo
We imagine we are seen by others. And that imagination forms our identity. Our identity is being shaped by others. Others is agent which influences who we are in society. You begin to believe that and you begin to see as your identity, what other people think of you. Intelligent, high self esteem, outgoing – you believe what people say about you, it becomes your identity. Our identity is formed through the way we imagine people see us.
🟥 Looking-glass Self https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UWOflUXKUQ
That imagination comes from interaction with these people. In the process of interaction they tell you this is what we think about you. And then you go off believe in that. You don't control what people think about you. Front Stage Behavior: Familiarity breeds content-With front stage they behave nicely. It is often said that American Beauty is a film about identity. Each character seems to go through a very personal identity crisis. But I would argue that this crisis are not personal at all. They are products of wider social forces. We may define ourselves based on prevailing attitudes towards sexuality, beauty and material success. Sense of self strongly influences by social world.
An individual realize its self by reflecting others' perceptions about him. They use social interactions as a mirror. A Person grows and develop due to interpersonal interactions of the Society. When one interacts socially, one completely considers how one looks in the eyes of others. Negative response leads to depression and anxiety.
Looking Glass Self where you see yourself the way you think others see you. You can't see the way others truly see you. So you're seeing yourself they way you think others think they see you. You can see how much is lost in the translation. You're much more beautiful than you think. You attract so much more than you know. There's more going on with you than you care to acknowledge. Beauty is not about what you see. It's about what you reflect. 🟥 Looking Glass Self https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFEkq8uDiJU
Mirror in front of you, and you are looking at yourself in the mirror, the way it is – is mirror in reality. As Masha labels you, tells you, comments on you, provides you all kinds of feedback, your self continues to develop. The way society perceives you and gives feedback about you. Compromise
First Prev
“Alright, so uh...” Alex picked the last larva out of the bowl and ate it. A burst of umami and the unexpected taste of alcohol. Now that it had soaked up some of the spice from the broth, it was pretty good. Not particularly flavorful, but a better eating experience than he would expect from a grub. “Why did Eleya put two towns into a warship?”
“I do not know.” Carbon was less fussy about the variety of ingredients presented, eating without playing favorites. It was what she’d picked out when pressed to recommend something for him, and the speed of the devastation she was enacting on what had been a bowl nearly filled to the brim said that it was actually a personal favorite. “I had heard some suggesting converting retired Naval ships into housing, using a decommissioned carrier as a space station once it could be towed into a proper location. Swapping out launch bays for community towers is not a long bridge.”
“That seems...” It seemed desperate. But given what he’d seen, desperate was where they had been in the weeks following the disaster. Where they still were, even if things were improving.
Were things improving?
“Born out of desperation, yes.” She closed her eyes for a moment. “We did not have many colonies, we had not built so many stations. We only kept old ships for parts as another means of efficiency in our fleets. There had been hundreds of thousands in transit all over the Empire at the time. On their way home, on their way to relieve others who now no longer had a home to return to.”
“Yeah, that-” He shifted some of the shredded cabbage-potato around his bowl, trying to figure out what to say. The ‘that sucks’ he had stopped himself from blurting out felt offensively inadequate. “That does present a huge challenge. Did they end up bringing ships online for that?”
“Oh, we did everything. Any idea that was not completely untenable got the blue light. Repurposing ships, building sealed micro-arcologies on less habitable planets, mining out sufficiently large asteroids, asking the Confederation for help. I saw one proposal that suggested an inflatable space station. I thought it was a completely deranged idea.” She paused and picked up the bowl, slurping out some of the broth. “Then Humans arrive to bring aid, and do you know what the first structure they brought with them was?”
“An inflatable space station.” He saw that coming. Everyone - well, everyone who was sufficiently interested in space ships - would recognize the Redoubt class from that description alone. The very definition of form following function, each ship was little more than a central cylinder with hard points for a dozen habitat modules, and engines bolted to one end. Light, fast, cheap. Once deployed, you had a small space station that could be packed up when you were done. Old technology, sure, but they were everywhere, and the configuration options were extensive.
“Exactly. Forgive me, but I laughed. I knew the intent was to help, but having seen that proposal just weeks before...” She smiled and laughed despite having just apologized for such a thing.
“No I get it, it’s a goofy looking ship.” He could see the humor in the situation as well. Having gone from ‘this is too dangerous’ to ‘of course the Humans brought one’ was pretty funny. It put a smirk on his face and got him close to laughing along with her. “Probably used it as a command post until something heavier arrived. Kind of the primary use case for those in Search and Rescue, which is what I think the aid mission was first considered.”
“I was not involved with that aspect of recovery operations, but it stands to reason.” She set her utensils aside in a very specific way, sliding the bowl towards the end of the table. “I cannot tell you why they put all these people here. My first guess would be that it was a somewhat straightforward swap. The bays are very securely attached to the structure, but they are intended to be removed and replaced. It would be important that Eleya use her ship as a proof of concept.”
“Royals lead?” Seemed the logical jump.
Carbon nodded. “The Sword is recognized as her flagship. It is named after her. The Stronghold is based heavily on the Imperial Palace in Ama’o - may it rest. Taking in civilians, thousands of them, is hard proof that she is not simply hiding in here. Having the senate on board also brings with it the need for support staff, creating a symbiotic relationship. It is... a good compromise.”
“Okay, wait. How is The Sword of the Morning Light named after Eleya?” That legitimately confused him. “All I know is the -ya suffix is feminine.”
“Another name mauled by your automatic translation, though this time it is a portion of the Empress’ full formal titles.” She gave him a pointed look, a little smirk hiding on the side of her muzzle. “The strictest translation would be ‘the sword that is used to cut back the night,’ but that is even worse. If I were doing translations and feeling poetic, perhaps I would call it Dawnsword. It would convey the meaning of the name well enough, I think, without being verbose.”
“Then why do you call it the Sword like we do?” He figured just using the actual Tsla name would be easy enough if Dawnsword was a better translation.
“When in Rome.” Carbon snickered. “The Confederate systems I was working with before leaving for the Haultain were not set up to handle Tsla, and none of the Humans I spoke to recognized the name when I said it, so it became a force of habit.”
“Ah, that’d do it.” He’d ask about the actual name another time - it being one of Eleya’s titles felt like a natural transition to learning the rest of her titles, and he didn’t give a single damn about doing that right now.
“Alright, Eleya needs places to put people, and a place to put a temporary capital until the new location can be properly sorted. Two birds with one stone, I suppose. Wouldn’t staying at Schoen be more of the... leader thing to do?”
“If she were to stay here beyond the end of this endeavor, perhaps so. For now, having this ship - and its civilians - as a base of operations, in what even we consider to be one of the most secure solar systems, is reasonable. Most governing at that level has been done remotely since before the disaster, so it doesn’t impede anything.” She paused to sip her tea. “No one needs a senator to be on site anyway. Their presence traditionally just interferes with real work.”
That did get a laugh out of Alex. “The more things change.”
“The more they stay the same, yes?” She said with a grin.
“It is so. All right, mystery of the Dawnsword’s surprise towns is put to rest.” He stopped talking as Haraya came out of the woodwork to remove Carbon’s dishes, bustling away with even less stiffness than before. Why did he feel like he was forgetting something? “Heck. Did... Did anyone tell you we have an appointment to see a designer about our uh, our insignia?”
“No, but my communicator has been going off like I am being told something like that.” Carbon laughed and leaned back into her chair, fishing the slim black device from her jacket, the screen coming on.
Alex was not intentionally staring at his wife’s abdomen as he pushed the bowl away and set his chopsticks out like she had done. “Zenshen said it was this afternoon.”
“Mmh, afternoon. Another curious translation.” She teased him gently, flicking items off her screen one by one. “Neya says it is with Aetena Lyshen, at three. He has stated that his schedule is open today, and we may come in earlier if we so desire. Oh. How unexpected.”
Three o'clock, Tsla’o time, was probably like a solid five or six hours away. Plenty of time to have a deeply personal conversation about what Neya had told him. Or, perhaps, just go talk to the guy sooner. It wasn’t like he was putting it off... but he was putting it off for now. “What’s up?”
“Neya contacted the Colonel to make sure that Zenshen was attached to your detail properly - it turns out she was. You are both already on the artifact project, so it was just a slight shift of duties. The Empress went through appropriate channels, and Lehnan agrees with her decision.” She glanced up at him as she processed that. “I did not expect it to be so proper.”
“She is trying to turn over a new leaf, at least as far as you are concerned. Ensuring I have the help to not fuck things up, and doing it properly, could be a part of that.” He managed to make it sound like a statement, even though it was very much a question. Did his insistence that Eleya needed to start following through on her words actually sink in?
“It is possible. She will need to do more than fill out a little paperwork to prove herself.”
“Yeah, obviously. It’s just that you seemed surprised, so I was left with the impression that was unusual.”
Carbon stared down at the phone in her hands. “I do not know. From what I have seen, she will normally adhere to formal channels. But in the past, when it has come to dealings with me, she has not. Relied on her word being law to make things happen.”
Like making it legal to marry a Human. Changed who knows how much legal history with a stroke of a pen, to unfold some new machinations. “Zenshen made it sound like she was mostly there to act as a buffer between me and the military, keep me from offending anyone. Which strikes me as Eleya looking after her investment.”
“That is a reasonable assumption. I fear she has more intent sunk into you than we can see, so...” She also stopped talking when their waitress returned for Alex’s dishes, giving the young woman a warm smile. “Perhaps it really is.”
Alex, being privy to at least one plan that Carbon was unaware of, instantly did not want to comment on that. “Like you say, it lies with her to prove... herself good.”
“So it does.” Carbon smiled at his butchering of their turn of phrase before glancing down at her communicator again. “All right. Do you have any further plans for this morning?”
“Not a one. Want to push up the meeting with Lyshen? For that matter, do we have any plans tonight?”
“I do want to get that done. Designers can be particular. Best to get started sooner, and also have a meal that we can excuse ourselves for without appearing rude.” She smirked, displaying a little bit of the knowledge she had accumulated growing up in an elevated class, and started tapping away at the screen with both thumbs. “As for this evening, nothing that Neya has made me aware of.”
“Sounds good to me.” Left the evening open to actually have a sit down with Neya, perfect. “Oh shit, that reminds me. Neya wants us to bring her breakfast.”
“Does she. Very upset about not being able to come along?” The tone she had said that Carbon was familiar with Neya pretending to be put out by that, as did the barely hidden smile and tiny little snort of a laugh.
“Absolutely heartbroken.” He played along. “I had to promise that we’d get her something this morning and that you’d make breakfast again tomorrow.”
“Mh. We will see who is making breakfast when the time comes, but I will have something sent to her and we will proceed to our appointment.” She flipped through the applications on her phone and started typing something else out. “There.”
Carbon slipped the slim black screen back into her jacket and stood, stretching a little bit before walking over to the end of the bar, Haraya hustling out to meet them with a small device like the one Carbon had used to pay in the other little restaurant. She set her palm down on it, it processed for a moment and played a happy little tune.
“Thank you both, it was an honor to serve you.” Haraya bowed again now that the transaction was done.
“You did well, thank you.” Carbon said it in Tsla as she returned the bow, glancing over at Alex to ensure he was doing the same thing.
Sa meha.” He was. Paying attention to what Carbon was doing was getting him pretty far, as was having memorized how to say ‘thank you’ in Tsla.
They turned to leave, but Haraya spoke again before they could take a step. Quiet, and very timid. “May I ask you a question?”
Carbon didn’t even think about it as she looked back. “Of course.”
“I was mostly asking the prince, I am very sorry.” She looked just this side of terrified to be correcting a Royal.
“Oh yeah, shoot.” Alex caught himself speaking in English way too late. He pursed his lips and inhaled, just barely preventing himself from rolling his eyes at that little faux pas. Based on what Carbon had said about Haraya getting her information about how nobles work from movies, she would have interpreted that as aimed at her. He queued up a very quick reply. “Please do.
“After you left, last night.” She glanced over at the bartender, who was not paying them any attention at all. “Adana kept saying a strange word, I assume it to be Human - untranslatable.”
The irony of the translator not being able to digest something in English was not lost on Alex. What had he said to the kid?
Carbon, meanwhile, thought it was hilarious. “It is actually two words, a phrase. Oh, busted. In this case I believe it means that he got caught doing something he should not have been doing.” She laughed, looking up at Alex with a grin.
Haraya’s relief at how this turned out was immediately visible. She was still tense, but didn’t look like she might have just caught an execution. “Adana likes to play with the door controls. They beep and flash, and he can activate the viewscreen... And open the door. That is what he was doing when he found the prince in the hallway, when he should have been in bed. It is not an offensive term?”
Et.” Alex shook his head no. Score another point for knowing the basics.
“It is as he says. A harmless statement.” Carbon picked up the slack from Alex trying not to advertise that he spoke their language yet. She looked over to him again. “Perhaps used to tease a friend when they get caught out?”
He nodded as sagely as he could, a smirk barely suppressed as he caught that shade she was directing at him.
“His mother will be so glad. She has been concerned it was some kind of swearing, or something worse. I told her that the prince had been kind in my interaction with him, but she was-” Haraya exhaled sharply, wide brown eyes darting between them with a hint of that fear creeping back in. “She was afraid despite that.”
“Ah. If that does not settle her, please get in contact with me.” She pulled her communicator out, swiping along the screen for a moment and holding it out to the young woman. “We can arrange a meeting to clear anything up.”
She looked down at a swirling orange circle on Carbon’s phone, “I am not allowed to carry my- May I get it?”
“Of course.” Carbon smiled.
Alex lowered his voice as Haraya hustled away. “You sure giving her your number is a good idea?”
“No. But she is earnest and correct in her assessment of you.” She shook her head, her words quiet and sharp. “That boy learned a simple phrase, and his mother thinks it is a curse? I know why she did. I have met my own people. I think a gentle nudge may be in order to prevent it from being passed along.”
“When you say gentle nudge...”
She held a hand out to ease his concern. “I was thinking tea.”
Haraya returned, phone in hand and followed by an older, grumpy looking male dressed in the same natural fiber clothes save for a vibrant red scarf around his neck, voice raised as he tried to keep up with the excited teen. “You may not use your-”
Akai.” Alex gave what he assumed was a manager a needlessly cheery greeting with a little wave of his fingers. Oh man, he had loved being a shit to managers when he was younger, particularly if they were on a power trip. The opportunity hadn’t presented itself recently, and the urge to abuse the power that he allegedly had now was so tempting.
“Floor boss!” Carbon was a step ahead of him, greeting the gray male in their own language loud enough to draw his attention away from their waitress. “What is it that I may not use?”
Alex’s translator sat unused for several seconds as the sounds that guy made never made it past shocked guttural noises, the realization of who he’d been yelling in the general direction of sinking in. Haraya was too busy getting Carbon’s contact information to notice, or might have just been ignoring this exchange as hard as the bartender was.
“It was- My words- Did not for you.” He held up his hands and backed away.
“Ah, a simple misunderstanding?” Carbon offered him as the phone dinged complete, and she slipped it back into her jacket.
“Yes, of course.” Couldn’t get out of there fast enough.
Haraya bowed again as she hid her communicator, the same black rectangle that Carbon and Alex appeared to have. “Thank you. I hope I will not have to contact you, but that you have offered...”
“The prince has shown me who he is, what is in his heart... It will not do to have anyone doubting his character.” Carbon smiled and returned the bow.
Alex followed suit.
The fear in her eyes was gone, and if anything there was a little bit of admiration in there now as she thanked them again, quietly, before running off to whatever her next duty was.
They left the same way they had come in, through the main dining area. The crowd had shifted, some groups gone, new ones in their place. Conversations to fill boredom, meals he didn’t recognize being consumed at every pace conceivable. Once again, he was pretty sure this was his kind of joint.
It only took the gentlest of questions to get Carbon talking about what she’d been doing all morning as they walked back to the tram, riding all the way to the stop closest to the bow this time. Alex was only slightly familiar about what she was talking about - had something to do with preventative maintenance checks on one of the shuttles. It was interesting to find out they had developed a very similar system to what he was used to, checking in on functionality after so many hours of use.
He didn’t understand the majority of what she was describing, but he enjoyed listening to her talk about things with such enthusiasm.
Lyshen’s office was easily the furthest forward he had been on the ship yet. Took the elevator up to deck 20 and then just walked towards the bow for another five minutes. He must have been as close as one could get to the plate armor and whatever buffer they put between it and the habitable areas. It seemed almost entirely unused - he was sure some of the bulkheads had dust on them.
For Alex, there were two potential reasons for this. Aetena Lyshen preferred the solitude of the area. It was actually very quiet, even compared to the hall in front of their cabin. Or, he had pissed someone off and gotten banished to a spot as far away as possible.
Whichever option, Lyshen had put some work into his workspace. The door was ringed in a delicate gold filigree, a lacework of glittering geometric shapes with his name and title contained in a small banner above the door. They were meeting with a Royal Artisan.
Carbon tapped the door controls and it slides open almost instantly. The young woman with light red fur inside is dressed nearly as formally as they had been last night, though in muted grays. She bows. Not too deep. “Welcome, the Chief Artisan is preparing for your arrival. It should be just a few minutes.”
Chief Artisan. Well. Alex shot Carbon a sidelong glance as the receptionist turned and they followed her through a waiting room. A simple rectangular area, with a few upholstered chairs and benches scattered around. It was the most Human looking area he’d been in so far.
The far wall caught his eye as they walked through, windows looking into a workshop. Alex walked over, the large floor beyond housing a dozen or so Tsla’o, all seated at desks or workbenches, engrossed in whatever they were working on. Almost to the last, they were using hand tools.
Alex had never really seen craftsmen up close, doing their thing. In movies, or videos, sure. But not right here a few steps away, carefully engraving some sort of... Breastplate? Cuirass? Big chunk of metal that looked like it went over the chest.
“I believe that is yours.” Carbon stepped up next to him, a smirk in her voice as she leaned against his shoulder. “To go with your gauntlets, and the rest of the armor that is no doubt being fabricated.”
“What makes you say that?” How could she pick that up from looking at it for, what, three or four seconds?
“Consider the size.” She nodded at it, the artist working on it laying out a star near the shoulder. “Who else would wear such a piece?”
“Huh.” Compared to the guy who was doing the work, it wasn’t exactly massive, but he would need a lot of padding to wear that. This raised a few questions for him about the ethics of receiving such gifts. But he wasn’t a politician... Not as far as the Confederation was concerned. “I guess it is.”
They stood in silence and watched work progress. A woman in the back was carving something, perhaps a chair leg. One guy in the corner making hinges with an induction forge and a tiny, specialized anvil.
Before long, the secretary approached them again. “The Chief Artisan is prepared for you now. Please.” She gestured to the only door that went somewhere other than the corridor.
The Chief Artisan was sitting behind his desk, wearing an outfit similar to his receptionist, pale green eyes switching back and forth between two screens. The primary one was built into the desk, and had been jury rigged to a Human made laptop that sat on top of it, a rat’s nest of cables connecting the two. There was a holoprojector built into the desk, a jumble of images floating over it. He waved them in and gestured to the chairs across from him, “Please, sit.”
Alex was quick to oblige, glad to be just some guy for the moment. Carbon didn’t seem to mind either, taking the seat beside him without a word. Aetena was the first green Tsla’o Alex had seen, sort of a dark forest green with jade stripes visible on his neck. Apparently a bit of a rarity given how often he saw the other colors on the ship.
“I am sorry to keep you waiting, the connection to your Solanet has gone down. Despite that, I believe I have enough saved locally to begin the process.” Lyshen trailed off, lost between the two displays before closing a dozen images from the holo. He picked a pen up from the table and arranged the remaining pictures neatly, four different coats of arms that claimed to belong to a Sorenson. The red enamel barrel blurred into an arc as he spun the pen in his fingers, voice picking up speed as he locked on to Alex. “There is a large amount of heraldry available for your surname, do you know which coat of arms belongs to your particular family?”
There was a deer, a deer head, a rearing horse and a weird shaped star. Maybe it was a flower, or a drip of paint. They were all surrounded by leaves and the occasional knight’s helmet. Alex wasn’t sure what any of it meant and up until now, he’d never even thought about it. Knights and damsels in distress had never really been his thing. “Uh, can’t say that I do, no.”
“Mmh. What geographic region does your lineage trace back to? I could find no significant references to the Berkley Soresons on your Solanet.” He leaned back and the pen continued to trace crimson circles in his hand.
“The name comes from Europe, but the last couple of generations have lived in California, and America before that for who knows how long... We’re from a little bit of everywhere.” It was an inside joke with the family, which had ties back into nearly every corner of the globe at this point. Now they had a relative from somewhere way off the globe as well.
That puzzled Aetena, ears flicking as he turned back to the Human screen and picked over the keyboard slowly. He didn’t like what he found. “All of these originate from the continent of Europe. Do you happen to know which country?”
“No, I’m not sure. Had an uncle do the family tree thing once, but between the civil wars and The Collapse, the lineage got spotty about a hundred years ago.” Alex wasn’t really into the whole ancestry thing once you got outside of living relatives. It was novel, sure, but right now all he really wanted to do was ask if he could borrow that Solanet access when it came back up. The rest of the ship had access to the Confed’s milnet, which tightly restricted what he could be sending across it - he just wanted to download a couple of movies and some music, but milnet barely overlapped with the wider public network.
Lyshen set his hand down and the pen switched back and forth like a metronome, clicking on his desk at the end of each arc. He closed his eyes for a moment, jaw working silently before he closed the images and started pulling up new ones. “Perhaps we should move on to other aspects of this endeavor. As I have been told that you wish to integrate Tsla’o and Human cultures in your marriage, I had intended to blend the existing Tshalan sigil with some of the Sorenson family heraldry. I thought it would be best to use the gear-star surround from the Princess’ family crest as a base to build from. Something that is immediately familiar to Tsla’o, to put the viewer at ease. As it is indicative of starship commands, exploration and the outer colonies, it will solidly represent both of you and the way you met.”
Alex raised an eyebrow at Carbon, “sound reasonable?” He had no idea if it was or not, but it did sound like it. Also, if they were serious about integrating parts of Tsla’o and Human cultures, they needed to actually get on that.
“Yes. I agree, that would be a good place to start.”
“Thank you.” He busied himself bringing up a few more pictures, rough combinations of the ten point gear-star and the various items from the Sorenson crests, bits of decoration and detail work.
The door chimed behind them and Lyshen stopped with a sharp glare. He eyed the clock and sighed, a whispered curse under his breath before he set his pen down and straightened up. “Come.”
There was a soldier partially concealed behind the door, the rank plate on his uniform loaded with details, not that Alex could read them yet. He swept the room with a rifle as he entered, the short barrel ending up pointed just a hair under Alex’s sternum. A pair of soldiers took up positions on either side of the door and covered him, a few more lined up in the waiting room.
When he spoke, it was crisp and authoritative. “Please back away from the Human.”
I work as a contract editor doing copy edits, line edits, and fact checking. I'm also a freelance writer for another team within the same company. The other team also has contract editors, and they get bylines for contributing.
On the team where I edit, though, we do not. I've searched in here and can see editors should not get bylines if they didn't significantly contribute, but in this case I feel like we should since the lion's share of editing, revising, and fact checking is done by us.
There's even a modal that denotes things have been "verified" by the editor so as not to step on the toes of the author.
Is it wrong that my full-time teammate who does the final review removes other names? I'm traditionally a writer, so I'm trying to understand if this is ethical or not.
2024.05.13 15:30 TransparentSelf20 20 [M4F] #Egypt - a guy from the pyramids looking for his other half in probably the strangest place possible.
Thank you for giving me the chance, and by the end of this paragraph, I’d hope I’d earn your heart :).
Hey there! Usually would introduce myself with my name but I don’t wanna share too much info about myself here. I’m a 20 year old medical student that is fighting many battles at the moment. Whether that would be loneliness or academic challenges. I’ve realized the amount of scars I’ve been getting from these battles. And I’ve realized that maybe I’m in need of a medic; someone that could support me. It’s a harsh world out there, and sometimes having each other by our side makes things way easier.
I’ve always been told to “focus on myself” and stuff, which I don’t nessaraily disagree with. But I felt the need to make give it a shot Atleast.
I must say that I’m seeking something meaningful and long term (forever). I’m not playing around. Or looking for something temporary. So if you have these intentions please don’t text me.
About me: as I said, I’m a 20 year old medical student, so I do spend a lot of my time studying. But I also have hobbies like going to the gym, watching YouTube, and others I won’t say so you can have fun figuring me out :). Im 167cm tall, with dark brown eyes, athletic body, soft hair and trying to grow a beard (lol). Also, an important thing I would like to say is that I am a Muslim. Not the most religious as you maybe able to tell. But I still adhere to a lot of my Islamic morals and ethics. And I’d hope you do too.
Personality traits: generally speaking, I am an extremely protective person when I fall in love. I’ve always been told that I had a contagious laugh, and a broken humor. I’d laugh at the most non funny things ever lol. I’ve always been a really deep person, and I would always hate shallow meaningless conversations. I usually slowly get to reveal my true personality once I’m really comfortable around you. And that usually takes time.
Who I’m seeking:
-an Egyptian girl living in Egypt
-willing to meet one day.
-shorter than me (is a must)
-preferably younger but older by a 2-3 years gap is fine
Please be interesting, be able to drive a conversation, give me a hint about who you are in your first message, maybe some of your interests and what attracted you to my post.
Something else I wanna say, I do fully understand that there are a few phases before getting closer to each other. We will ofc be simply friends at first then see where things go.
2024.05.13 15:16 IranRPCV Devotional from Sally Gabriel for May 13th
2 Peter 1:5 “And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;”
Peter has just told us that God’s divine power has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness. Now he’s telling us what we are expected to do with our knowledge of God’s power. We need to diligently add to it.
That doesn’t mean we have the power to increase his power. However, we do have the power to increase our display of his power in our lives. We can build on what we’ve been given, complementing our basic faith with virtue.
Virtue is defined as behavior showing high moral standards. It is moral excellence or ethical strength. A virtuous person is mighty in holiness, honest and trustworthy; one filled with integrity.
Every Christian needs to display these characteristics. There are people all around us who don’t believe that God exists, yet they believe in being virtuous.
The real problem I see is that people who claim to be Christians sometimes fail at being virtuous. We need to be careful not to let that happen.
A few days ago I was at Wendy’s with two of my grandkids. I didn’t realize how much the bill was until I got my change back. I handed the girl a $20 bill. She gave me back $15 and change. She thought I had given her $40. I brought it to her attention and we made the correction. That girl was so happy that I did the right thing and her cash register would not detect that error at the end of her shift.
Who saw that display of honesty? That girl sure noticed it. My grandkids saw it as well. They know I profess to be a Christian and so it was important that they saw my actions follow my words of faith. God saw my actions too. More than that, Satan saw it. He didn’t win in his attempt to get me to fail in being a Christian. (Not that time, anyway.)
I remember a line from a movie when a father was talking with his adult son. He said, “Son, if I can’t believe every word that comes from your mouth, I can’t believe any word that you speak.” We are called to be a people of faith which displays virtuous actions. Do you pursue moral excellence?
🙏Father, thank you for loving me. Thank you for your forgiveness and for the guidance of your Holy Spirit. I want always to seek moral excellence in all I do. Matthew 5:16 says, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” That’s my goal. Help me to reach it. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen. 🙏
2024.05.13 15:01 wisdomperception The Path and the Way of Practice for removal of five lower fetters (MN 64)
The Path and the Way of Practice for removal of five lower fetters (MN 64)
In this teaching, the Buddha shares the path and the way of practice for removal of the five lower fetters of: 1.) self-identity view, 2.) doubt regarding teachings, 3.) adherence to rites and rituals, 4.) sensual desires, and 5.) ill-will.
An aniconic art showing the Buddha preaching, symbolized by the empty throne
Thus have I heard — At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthi in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park. There, he addressed the bhikkhus thus: "Bhikkhus."
"Venerable sir," they replied. The Blessed One said this:
"Bhikkhus, do you recall the five lower fetters as I have taught them?"
When this was said, Venerable Mālukyaputta responded to the Blessed One: "Indeed, venerable sir, I remember the five lower fetters as taught by the Blessed One."
"How exactly do you remember the five lower fetters as I have taught them, Mālukyaputta?"
"Venerable sir, I recall the following as lower fetters taught by the Blessed One: identity-view, doubt (wrt teachings), adherence to rites and rituals, sensual desire, and ill-will. This is how I remember the five lower fetters, venerable sir."
Simile of the infant
"Mālukyaputta, for what reason do you say that I taught these five lower fetters in this way? Surely, Mālukyaputta, the wanderers of other sects might use the simile of an infant to challenge you. For a young, tender infant lying on his back does not even have the concept of 'self', so how could the view of identity arise in him? Yet, the latent tendency towards identity-view is present within him. A young, tender infant lying on his back does not even have the concept of 'teachings', so how could doubt about teachings arise in him? Yet, the latent tendency towards doubt is present within him. A young, tender infant lying on his back does not even have the concept of 'ethics', so how could attachment to rites and rituals arise in him? Yet, the latent tendency towards such attachment is present within him. A young, tender infant lying on his back does not even have the concept of 'sensual pleasures', so how could sensual desire arise in him? Yet, the latent tendency towards sensual desire is present within him. A young, tender infant lying on his back does not even have the concept of 'beings', so how could ill-will towards beings arise in him? Yet, the latent tendency towards ill-will is present within him. Wouldn't the wanderers of other sects use this simile of the infant to challenge you?"
After this was said, Venerable Ānanda addressed the Blessed One: "It is time, Blessed One, it is time, Well-Gone One, for you to teach the five lower fetters. Upon hearing them from the Blessed One, the monks will remember."
"Therefore, Ānanda, listen carefully and pay close attention; I will speak."
"Yes, venerable sir," replied Venerable Ānanda. The Blessed One then spoke:
Uninstructed ordinary person
"Here, Ānanda, an uninstructed ordinary person, who does not regard noble ones and is unskilled and untrained in their Dhamma, who does not regard virtuous people and is unskilled and untrained in their Dhamma, remains entangled and afflicted by identity view; and does not truly understand the escape from arisen identity view. For him, this identity view has become deep-rooted and is a lower fetter.
He remains entangled and afflicted by doubt; and he does not truly know the escape from arisen doubt. This doubt has become deep-rooted and is a lower fetter.
He remains entangled and afflicted by attachment to rites and rituals; and he does not truly know the escape from arisen attachment to rites and rituals. This attachment has become deep-rooted and is a lower fetter.
He remains entangled and afflicted by sensual desire; and he does not truly know the escape from arisen sensual desire. This sensual desire has become deep-rooted and is a lower fetter.
He remains entangled and afflicted by ill-will; and he does not truly know the escape from arisen ill-will. This ill-will has become deep-rooted and is a lower fetter.
Disciple of the noble ones
Moreover, Ānanda, a disciple of the noble ones, who respects the noble ones and is skilled and well-trained in their Dhamma, who respects virtuous people and is skilled and well-trained in their Dhamma, does not remain entangled or afflicted by identity view; he truly understands the escape from any arisen identity view. For him, that identity view and its underlying tendency are abandoned.
He does not remain entangled or afflicted by doubt; he truly understands the escape from any arisen doubt. For him, that doubt and its underlying tendency are abandoned.
He does not remain entangled or afflicted by attachment to rites and rituals; he truly understands the escape from any arisen attachment to rites and rituals. For him, that attachment and its underlying tendency are abandoned.
He does not remain entangled or afflicted by sensual desire; he truly understands the escape from any arisen sensual desire. For him, that sensual desire and its underlying tendency are abandoned.
He does not remain entangled or afflicted by ill-will; he truly understands the escape from any arisen ill-will. For him, that ill-will and its underlying tendency are abandoned.
Simile for the Path and the Way of practice
Ānanda, there is a path and a way of practice for the abandonment of the five lower fetters. That one could understand, see, or abandon these five lower fetters without following this path and way of practice — this is not possible. Just as it is impossible to cut out the heartwood of a large, solid tree standing with heartwood without first cutting through its bark and sapwood, similarly, it is not possible to abandon the five lower fetters without adhering to the correct path and way of practice.
Furthermore, Ānanda, there is indeed a path and a way of practice for the abandonment of the five lower fetters; that one, by following this path and way of practice, can understand, see, or abandon these five lower fetters — this possibility does exist.
Just as, Ānanda, it is indeed possible for someone to cut through the core of a great tree endowed with heartwood by first slicing through its bark and sapwood, similarly, Ānanda, it is indeed possible for one to understand, see, and abandon the five lower fetters by adhering to the correct path and way of practice. Just as, Ānanda, the Ganges River, full and overflowing, is impassable in its breadth by a frail person who thinks, 'I will cross this breadth of the Ganges River by cutting through the current safely to the other side'; such a person would not be able to cut through the current and reach the far shore safely. In the same way, Ānanda, for those whose minds do not leap forward, become confident, steady, and free when teachings leading to the cessation of identity-view are given, they should be seen as frail like that person. Just as, Ānanda, the Ganges River, full and deep, could be crossed by a strong person who thinks, 'I will cut through the current of this river and safely reach the other side'; such a person would be able to cut through the current and safely reach the far shore.
Similarly, Ānanda, for those whose minds do leap forward, become confident, steady, and free when teachings leading to the cessation of identity-view are given, they should be viewed as strong like that person.
The Path and the Way of practice
Jhāna 1
And what, Ānanda, is the path, what is the way of practice for the abandonment of the five lower fetters? Here, Ānanda, a bhikkhu, through solitude from attachments and by abandoning unwholesome mental qualities, with the complete internal stilling of bodily agitation, secluded from sensual pleasures and unwholesome mental qualities, enters and dwells in the first jhāna. This jhāna is characterized by reflection and examination of thoughts, and is filled with joy (rapture) and pleasure that are born from seclusion. In this state, he perceives whatever phenomena are present — whether form, feeling, perception, formations, or consciousness — as impermanent, suffering, a disease, a boil, a dart, misery, an affliction, alien, disintegrating, empty, and not-self. He turns his mind away from these phenomena. Having turned his mind away, he directs it towards the deathless element, reflecting: 'This is peaceful, this is sublime, namely the stilling of all formations, the relinquishment of all attachments, the wearing away of craving, dispassion, cessation, Nibbāna.' If he is steady in that state, he experiences the wearing away of the taints. But if he does not experience the wearing away of the taints because of that desire for the Dhamma, that delight in the Dhamma, then, with the wearing away of the five lower fetters, he becomes one due to reappear spontaneously in the Pure Abodes, and there he will attain final Nibbāna without ever returning from that world. This indeed, Ānanda, is the path, the way of practice for the abandonment of the five lower fetters.
Jhāna 2...4
Furthermore, Ānanda, the bhikkhu, upon the subsiding of reflection and examination of thoughts, enters and dwells in the second jhāna … continues to the third jhāna … and then enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna. In these states, whatever phenomena are present — whether form, feeling, perception, volitions, or consciousness — he perceives as impermanent, suffering, a disease, a boil, a dart, misery, an affliction, alien, disintegrating, empty, and not-self. He turns his mind away from these phenomena. Having turned his mind away, he directs it towards the deathless element, reflecting: 'This is peaceful, this is sublime, namely the stilling of all formations, the relinquishment of all attachments, the wearing away of craving, dispassion, cessation, Nibbāna.' If he is steady in that state, he experiences the wearing away of the taints. But if he does not experience the wearing away of the taints because of that desire for the Dhamma, that delight in the Dhamma, then, with the wearing away of the five lower fetters, he becomes one due to reappear spontaneously in the Pure Abodes, and there he will attain final Nibbāna without ever returning from that world. This indeed, Ānanda, is the path, the way of practice for the abandonment of the five lower fetters.
Base of Infinite Space
Furthermore, Ānanda, a bhikkhu, by completely surpassing perceptions of form, with the disappearance of recognition of sense impressions and by not attending to perceptions of diversity, aware that 'space is infinite', enters and dwells in the base of infinite space. Whatever phenomena are present there, whether pertaining to feelings, perceptions, formations, or consciousness - he perceives as impermanent, suffering, a disease, a boil, a dart, misery, an affliction, alien, disintegrating, empty, and not-self. He turns his mind away from these phenomena. Having turned his mind away, he directs it towards the deathless element, reflecting: 'This is peaceful, this is sublime, namely the stilling of all formations, the relinquishment of all attachments, the wearing away of craving, dispassion, cessation, Nibbāna.' If he is steady in that state, he experiences the wearing away of the taints. But if he does not experience the wearing away of the taints because of that desire for the Dhamma, that delight in the Dhamma, then, with the wearing away of the five lower fetters, he becomes one due to reappear spontaneously in the Pure Abodes, and there he will attain final Nibbāna without ever returning from that world. This, indeed, Ānanda, is also the path, the way of practice for the abandonment of the five lower fetters.
Base of Infinite Consciousness
Furthermore, Ānanda, a bhikkhu, having completely transcended the base of infinite space, aware that 'consciousness is infinite', enters and dwells in the base of infinite consciousness. Whatever phenomena are present there — whether pertaining to feelings, perceptions, formations, or consciousness — he perceives as impermanent, suffering, a disease, a boil, a dart, misery, an affliction, alien, disintegrating, empty, and not-self. He turns his mind away from these phenomena. Having turned his mind away, he directs it towards the deathless element, reflecting: 'This is peaceful, this is sublime, namely the stilling of all formations, the relinquishment of all attachments, the wearing away of craving, dispassion, cessation, Nibbāna.' If he is steady in that state, he experiences the wearing away of the taints. But if he does not experience the wearing away of the taints because of that desire for the Dhamma, that delight in the Dhamma, then, with the wearing away of the five lower fetters, he becomes one due to reappear spontaneously in the Pure Abodes, and there he will attain final Nibbāna without ever returning from that world. This, indeed, Ānanda, is also the path, the way of practice for the abandonment of the five lower fetters.
Base of Nothingness
Furthermore, Ānanda, a bhikkhu, having completely transcended the base of infinite consciousness, aware that 'there is nothing', enters and dwells in the base of nothingness. Whatever phenomena are present there — whether pertaining to feelings, perceptions, formations, or consciousness — he perceives as impermanent, suffering, a disease, a boil, a dart, misery, an affliction, alien, disintegrating, empty, and not-self. He turns his mind away from these phenomena. Having turned his mind away, he directs it towards the deathless element, reflecting: 'This is peaceful, this is sublime, namely the stilling of all formations, the relinquishment of all attachments, the wearing away of craving, dispassion, cessation, Nibbāna.' If he is steady in that state, he experiences the wearing away of the taints. But if he does not experience the wearing away of the taints because of that desire for the Dhamma, that delight in the Dhamma, then, with the wearing away of the five lower fetters, he becomes one due to reappear spontaneously in the Pure Abodes, and there he will attain final Nibbāna without ever returning from that world. This, indeed, Ānanda, is also the path, the way of practice for the abandonment of the five lower fetters."
"If this, venerable sir, is the path and the way of practice for the abandonment of the five lower fetters, then why are some bhikkhus said to be 'released by mind' and some bhikkhus are said to be 'released by wisdom'?"
"The difference here, Ānanda, is in their faculties, I say."
Thus spoke the Blessed One. The venerable Ānanda was satisfied and rejoiced in the Blessed One's words.
-----------
The five lower fetters described in this teaching are:
Fetter Relation with stages of enlightenment
Self-identity view Abandoned at stream-entry
Doubt regarding teachings Abandoned at stream-entry
Adherence to rites and rituals (precepts and observances) Abandoned at stream-entry
Sensual desires Weakened at once-returning (2nd stage of enlightenment), and abandoned at non-returning (3rd stage of enlightenment)
Ill-will Weakened at once-returning (2nd stage of enlightenment), and abandoned at non-returning (3rd stage of enlightenment)
As one is closely examining and reflecting on the teachings to verify them through reviewing of one's experiences or by applying them in practice; one is practicing towards the wearing away of all of these fetters.
However, it is only when the mind is entering and dwelling in the jhānas, states of collectedness that are cultivated by abandoning of unwholesome mental qualities such as those associated with hindrances and of cultivating wholesome mental qualities such as those of renunciation, good-will and harmlessness (factors of developing right intention), through enhanced concentration available in the jhānas, one is now more readily able to observe the arising of the fetters in one's experiences and able to apply the teachings.
When one is one of the four jhānas, or one of the three formless attainments, the Buddha's advice is at observing for the universal characteristics of impermanence, dis-ease, and not identifying a me/mine/myself across all that one experiences. It is through an active training in this way, by inclining the mind towards Nibbāna (enlightenment), that one is able to gradually let go of the fetters.
One doesn't need to attain to all the jhānas and to all the formless attainments listed here, rather, through abiding in any of the jhānas or formless attainments: when the fetters are worn away through a dedicated practice of discernment, one is able to attain to full Nibbāna (enlightenment) or to the 3rd stage of enlightenment (non-returning).
2024.05.13 14:55 brokejourn what does journalistic ethics say about this situation?
Hello fellow journos,
I did a piece for an outlet in January and at the same time was working another piece on the same topic but a different angle for another outlet. The first outlet published in January and used a couple of my pictures and this outlet pays for pictures and adds their outlet name in credit like: journo/XYZ
I had sent pictures to the other outlet around the same time because I didn't expect this one would take months for the story to come in its final shape. But I made sure (in my mind at least) that I do not send the same pictures to both the outlets and I had an abundance of pictures but today when the other article has gone up, I see that it includes one of the pictures the other outlet had used and paid me for. Now this second outlet only pays for the writing so I'm not gonna be paid any extra money for the picture and nor do they add their own outlet in credit but just the writer (me) however my entire excitement of finally getting the piece published (I was working on it for 5 months with the editor to bring it to shape) has died as soon as I saw this blunder on my part.
What does journalistic ethics say here? Should I ask my editor to have that picture removed or inform the other outlet? It might not be a huge deal but is this dishonesty if I say nothing to either outlet?
2024.05.13 14:26 sonofabutch No game today, so let's remember a forgotten Yankee: Horace Clarke
"I played major league baseball for parts of 10 years, and I played in the magnificent city of New York, and as a child in St. Croix that was beyond dreams. Yes, I am a happy man." -- Horace Clarke
The worst stretch of Yankee baseball since the Highlander days, the mid 60s to the mid 70s, is remembered by those who lived through it as the Horace Clarke Era. Unfairly or not, the bespectacled switch-hitting middle infielder from the U.S. Virgin Islands came to symbolize all that was wrong with the Yankees in those sad years.
Horace Meredith Clarke grew up on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He was just the fifth player from the U.S. Virgin Islands to play in the majors, and the first Yankee. His father had grown up playing cricket, and because there were no youth baseball leagues on the island, young Horace played softball. He said he didn't see his first baseball game until around age 13, when he saw some U.S. Navy sailors playing.
“We were poor kids in St. Croix. We played on a field which was right on the ocean and had no fences. We couldn’t afford baseballs. So the coach made the lefthanded batters hit righthanded and the righthanded batters hit lefthanded. This was so they couldn’t hit the ball so far. It saved us from losing the baseballs in the ocean.”
Clarke was spotted by a Yankee scout in the Caribbean and assigned to the lowest run of the Yankee farm system -- the Kearney Yankees in Class D ball. Imagine being an 18-year-old kid from St. Croix in the Caribbean, and arriving in Kearney, Nebraska in the spring of 1958. The culture shock must have been overwhelming. Maybe not surprisingly, Clarke hit a disappointing .225/.322/.283 in 187 at-bats. He said the biggest adjustment wasn't the cold weather, but night games played under the lights, something he'd never done before.
The following year Horace was in the Florida State League, and he thrived in the warmer weather, hitting .293/.375/.366 in 571 at-bats. He also stole 34 bases that year. The year after that, he was back up north, playing for Fargo in the Northern League, and hit .307/.389/.369 in 537 at-bats. The following year was Amarillo in the Texas League, where he hit .300/.364/.429.
Then the next three years in the International League, where he hit .281/.345/.352 in 1,494 at-bats while playing shortstop and second base.
But despite Clarke's promise, he was blocked by Bobby Richardson. By the time Clarke had reached Triple-A at age 24 in 1963, the 27-year-old Richardson had already been a four-time All-Star, a two-time Gold Glove winner, and had won three World Series rings... plus the MVP for the 1960 World Series, the only time in baseball history a player for the losing team won the award!
But the Yankees knew Richardson was planning on retiring, so they kept Clarke waiting in the wings. He opened the year with the Toledo Mud Hens, then the Yankees' Triple-A team, and then after a month he finally got the call to the show.
Fifty-nine years ago today, on May 13, 1965, Clarke was sent up to the plate in the 7th inning as a pinch hitter to make his major league debut in a game the Yankees were losing, 4-1, to the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park.
Clarke, facing Dave Morehead, beat out an infield single. It was a promising beginning. But, as if scripted to be symbolic of his career, Clarke's success was short-lived as the next batter bounced into a fielder's choice. Forced out at second base, Clarke watched the rest of the game from the dugout. The next day he'd get the start and go 0-for-4.
Hitting .250/.298/.269 at the end of June as a utility infielder, Clarke was sent back down to Toledo for two months to get more regular playing time. It helped. When he returned on September 3 -- coincidentally, also against the Red Sox -- he went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Overall that month, Clarke hit .273/.298/.327, and for the season, .262/.298/.299 in 115 plate appearances. But the Yankees, the reigning A.L. champions for the past five seasons, finished a shocking 77-85, all the way in sixth place.
That off-season, Phil Linz -- the harmonica playing utility infielder -- was traded to the Phillies, opening up a roster spot for Clarke. Richardson, though only 31, had told the Yankees he would retire at the end of the 1966 season, and the Yankees wanted him to mentor Clarke as his successor.
Clarke started just seven games over the first half, but a series of injuries forced him into regular service. Over the second half, he played almost every day, hitting .276/.334/.404 in 300 plate appearances. He was mostly used at shortstop, where his defense wasn't great, but in 16 games at second base he looked good enough that the Yankees were confident he could be a regular there. Yankee fans were no doubt a little sad when Richardson officially announced to the press on August 31 that it was his last season, but at least we knew who would be playing second base the following year.
Indeed, second base was the least of the Yankees' problems. New York finished dead last at 70-89 in 1966, the team's worst performance since 1925, as injuries fell Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Elston Howard, and Whitey Ford.
Entering 1967 as the starting second baseman, Clarke hit a solid .272/.321/.316 (94 OPS+) in 633 plate appearances while leading the league in fielding percentage, assists, and range factor as a second baseman. He also stole 21 bases in 25 tries, a second-best .840 SB%. His 3.7 bWAR that year was better than any season Richardson ever had -- his career high was 3.2 bWAR in 1962.
The following year, the Yankees finished 83-79 -- above .500 for the first time in four seasons -- but a whopping 34.5 games out. Clarke had one of the worst years of his career, hitting .230/.258/.254 (60 OPS+) as he played through injuries all year.
He rebounded in 1969 to .285/.339/.467 (101 OPS+), with 33 stolen bases. It was, statistically, the best season of his career (3.9 bWAR). But once again the Yankees were terrible -- 28.5 games out.
In 1970, Clarke again disappointed, hitting .251/.286/.309 (68 OPS+). The Yankees won 93 games that year, but it amounted to naught as the Orioles ran away with the pennant, going 108-54 to win it by 15 games. In fact, it was pretty much over by July, with the Yankees 7 games out at the All-Star break.
It was around this time that Yankee fans began focusing their frustration on Clarke. One New York sportswriter routinely referred to him as "Horrible Horace". Miscast as a leadoff man -- he had a career .308 OBP -- and criticized for "bailing out" on double plays, manager Ralph Houk years later offered a tepid defense of his second baseman:
“I know I got a lot of criticism for playing Horace Clarke as much as I did, but he was a lot better ballplayer than anyone gave him credit for. He did a lot of things good but nothing great, and that was his problem. Besides, I didn’t have anyone else.”
The lack of a replacement was certainly an issue. In 1971, there was talk in The Sporting News about a prospect named Fred Frazier being the heir apparent to Clarke at second base. That year, Frazier hit a disappointing .261/.316/.313 in Triple-A; the next year, .216/.302/.281. The year after that, he was in the Orioles organization. He never made it out of the minors.
In fact, Clarke was the only constant in the Yankee infield in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Yankees during the, ahem, Horace Clarke Era had holes everywhere, with a revolving door at first base, third base, and shortstop. For five years, from 1967 to 1971, Clarke was the Opening Day starter at second base; during that same stretch, there were five different third basemen, five different third basemen, and three different shortstops. Between 1967 and 1973, he started 1,017 games at second base, or 90% of all Yankee games.
But that, explained Yankees PR man Marty Appel, was kind of the problem. "Fans especially didn’t like the second baseman, the beleaguered Horace Clarke, whose major flaw seemed to be longevity. It wasn’t his fault that no one better came along, and he was a better player than the fans gave him credit for. But because he was out there, year after year, he came to stand for this disappointing run by the club."
"I always did my best. I always played as hard as I could. I never was concerned about how the fans reacted to me." -- Horace Clarke
The following year Clarke hit .250/.321/.318 in 696 plate appearances, but the Yankees again were out of it, finishing 82-80 in 1971.
Yankee fans had been miserable since 1965, but frustration with the team in general -- and Clarke in particular -- reached a boiling point in 1972. It had been seven years since the Yankees had been in the post-season, and 1972 was the first year the Yankees had the playoffs within our grasp since winning the pennant in 1964. (The "closest and latest" the Yankees had been since the 1965 season was 9 games out of 1st place on September 8, 1970.)
On September 12, 1972, the Yankees were a half-game out of 1st place at 74-64, with 17 games left to go in the season. The Red Sox were in 1st at 73-62, the Orioles tied with New York at 74-64, and the Tigers a half-game behind at 73-64. Over the rest of the season, the Yankees went a heartbreaking 5-12, while the Tigers won 13 out of 19 to win the A.L. East.
There was plenty of blame to go around for that collapse, but Yankee fans were particularly irate at Clarke, who hit .225/.267/.296 during those final 17 games.
To his credit, Clarke never complained about the boos from fans or the criticism in the press. As quoted by Dick Young in the New York Daily News in 1972:
"Sure, I would feel bad when I saw in the papers that, 'the Yankees can never win the pennant with that guy at second base.' But why get mad. I figure that's his opinion, and he's entitled to it. I must have been able to do something. Don't tell me a ballplayer can fool a manager for seven years."
Years later, Thurman Munson said his adversarial relationship with the media was based on how Horace Clarke was treated.
In 1973, the 34-year-old Clarke hit .263/.317/.308 (80 OPS+), his defense was no longer among the league leaders, and the Yankees were once again double-digit games behind by Labor Day.
It was finally time to move on. That off season, the Yankees acquired 23-year-old utility infielder Jim Mason from the Texas Rangers and installed him as the starting shortstop for the upcoming 1974 season; Gene Michael, the Yankees' on-again, off-again shortstop since 1968, was moved to second base; and Clarke to the bench. It wasn't exactly an earth-shattering move -- Mason was coming off a season in which he hit .206/.273/.290, and Michael .225/.270/.278. If anything, the two represented a substantial downgrade from Clarke's numbers. (By bWAR the previous season, Clarke was still the best option of the three, 0.6 compared to Mason's -0.7 and Michael's -0.9.)
After hitting .234/.294/.255 in 53 plate appearances as a pinch hitter and spot starter, on May 31, 1974, the Yankees finally ended the Horace Clarke Era by selling his contract to the San Diego Padres along with minor league pitcher Lowell Palmer for $25,000. At the time of the deal, Clarke was still the Yankees' best option at second base as Mason was hitting .214/.287/.307 and Michael a putrid .134/.224/.179!
Six weeks later, the Yankees tried to address their second base problem again by acquiring former All-Star Sandy Alomar from the Angels. Alomar, who fathered major leaguers Sandy Jr. and Roberto, played for the Yankees for the next two and a half seasons, hitting .248/.287/.302... again, worse than Horace's career average of .256/.308/.313.
And yet getting rid of Horace Clarke immediately turned around the Yankees' fortunes. With Horace, the Yankees were 23-27, the worst record in the American League; without him, a second-best 66-46. New York finished 89-73, just two games behind the Baltimore Orioles.
The Yankees finally found a solution to the second base problem on December 11, 1975, trading previously forgotten Yankee Doc Medich to the Pirates for Dock Ellis, Ken Brett, and a 20-year-old prospect named Willie Randolph.
Meanwhile, Clarke went to San Diego and hit .189/.255/.200 in 99 plate appearances. He was released at the end of the season and retired. He was a frequent attendee at Yankee Old Timers' Games, and promoted baseball in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He died at age 81 on August 5, 2020, from complications due to Alzheimer's disease.
The Clarke Side
"I remember the first game I played in Yankee Stadium in 1965. There were more than 40,000 people in the stands. I had just come from my country where there are 30,000 people in the entire country. That was some adjustment." -- Horace Clarke
Overall, Horace Clarke hit .257/.309/.315 in 5,144 plate appearances as a Yankee. His numbers aren't quite as bad as they appear, as he played during one of the lowest offense eras since deadball... an 84 OPS+. That ranks him ahead of fondly-remembered Yankees like Shelley Duncan (81 OPS+), Rick Cerone (80 OPS+), Miguel Cairo (80 OPS+), Bucky Dent (72 OPS+), and... Bobby Richardson (77 OPS+). And while many complained about his defense, his defensive metrics -- such as we have for his era -- indicate he was at least an average defender. He led the league in range factor three times, in fielding percentage once, in assists six times, and in double plays twice.
People tend to think about Clarke -- if they think about him at all -- as either a terrible player, representative of the teams he played on, or a good player who was wasted on bad teams. The truth is somewhere in the middle. As sportswriter Maury Allen said, he was "an average big-leaguer on below-average Yankee teams."
And in fact, Clarke's 16.0 career bWAR as a Yankee is twice as much value as the player he replaced, Bobby Richardson (8.0 bWAR). But Richardson was a fan favorite, while Clarke was scorned. But of course... Richardson won three rings. And Yankee fans love a winner!
"New York is New York. You don’t win, you’re going to hear about it. I was in the middle." -- Horace Clarke
Had Clarke come along a few years earlier and been part of the early 1960s dynasty, he might be remembered fondly as a scrappy infielder, a Tony Kubek or a Bucky Dent or a Scott Brosius -- a good but not great player who had some memorable moments.
Instead, Horace Clarke defines an era of futility.
