The 10 Best Movies Coming to Apple TV+ in May 2024

2024.05.21 13:30 Ishika2337 The 10 Best Movies Coming to Apple TV+ in May 2024

Apple TV+ is one of the strangest streamers out there, with almost no licensed TV or film content and a small number of originals. That makes the best movies on Apple TV+ easy to find. There simply aren’t that many! Apple is clearly taking a “quality over quantity” approach, with its money spread across genres and targeted at making its subscribers (many roped in with a deal that came with one of the company’s tech products) treat it like a real contender. It also helps that it’s only $4.99 a month, or free for a year if you’ve just purchased a new (and eligible) device.
With films from up-and-comers like Minhal Baig, arthouse favorites like Sofia Coppola and Werner Herzog, some A-list music docs, one of the best animated movies of the 2020s and Martin Scorsese’s latest, Apple TV+ is actually making the case that it belongs in the conversation alongside the more established services. As long as it keeps adding good movies to its roster, that is. It recently snagged a few critical darlings like Killers of the Flower Moon and Wolfwalkers.

10. The Pigeon Tunnel

For a documentary about one of the most celebrated writers of spy fiction, The Pigeon Tunnel can seem—at first glance—deceptively placid. Clocking in at just over 90 minutes, the film features an extended conversation between David Cornwell, AKA John le Carre, and Oscar-winning docmaker Errol Morris. It’s just that. Two people talking, with Morris off-screen, their parrying question-and-answers broken up with archival images and re-enactments of Cornwell’s past, as well as snippets from the classic movies or TV adaptations based on his spy universe: The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and A Perfect Spy.

9. Hala

Writedirector Minhal Baig’s Hala is an intimate coming-of-age drama held up by its personal writerly touches and a star-making turn from Geraldine Viswanathan as the title character. Hala’s struggling with the same kinds of things we normally see high school characters struggle with: What to do after graduation, how to manage a relationship with her parents that’s not quite adult and not quite childish, and (of course) boys. Viswanathan’s understated quiet and the warmth in which the situations are shot (almost always centered on her face)—be they at a family dinner or a walk in a Chicago park or a reading of a high school English assignment—make the dramatic ricochet of Hala’s minor rebellion rattle us all the harder.

8. Boys State

The tendency to read too much into Boys State as a representative of American politics—contemporary, functional, broken and otherwise—doesn’t quite line up with the event itself, in which every year the American Legion sponsors a sort of mock government sleepaway camp in Texas for high school boys (girls get a similar program of their own), where attendees join parties, run for office, craft platforms, run campaigns, hold debates, then ultimately exercise their right to vote.

7. On the Rocks

Sofia Coppola’s new movie On the Rocks starts out as a story of possessive fatherhood, with Felix (Bill Murray) narrating to his teenage daughter, Laura: “And remember, don’t give your heart to any boys. You are mine until you get married. Then you’re still mine.” The girl laughs off the declaration as a jape, which turns out to be a catastrophic tactical mistake. In her womanhood, Laura (Rashida Jones), does indeed get married to a man, Dean (Marlon Wayans), and they have two beautiful daughters of their own, eldest Maya (Liyanna Muscat) and youngest Theo (Alexandra Mary Reimer).

6. Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You

The black-and-white behind-the-scenes documentary accompaniment to Bruce Springsteen’s album of the same name, Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You is a beautiful and companionable tour through the music and its making from an American master. Director Thom Zimny buys into the album’s concept, which focuses on just how long Springsteen’s been at this thing. Poignant juxtaposition with archival footage and pictures emphasizes just how long the E Streeters have been at this—and reminds us of who and what was lost along the way.

5. Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds

Werner Herzog will show you multiple clips from Mimi Leader’s Deep Impact for no other reason than because he likes them, he finds them well-done and evocative—he says as much in that even-keeled, oddly accented voice over—then soon after chastise “film school doctrine” when complimenting a field video shot by a South Korean meteor specialist in Antarctica. Like Nomad: In the Footsteps of Bruce Chatwin, his documentary from earlier in the year, Fireball (co-directed with Clive Oppenheimer, with whom he made 2016’s Into the Inferno) is less about what it’s about (meteorites, shooting stars, cosmic debris—and the people who love them) than it is about Werner Herzog’s life, which is his filmography, which is a heavily manipulated search for ultimate truth.

4. CODA

Sometimes a movie so successfully plunges you into its world that it completely engulfs you in a lived-in experience. From the gorgeous, scenic opening moments of CODA, you can almost smell the Atlantic salt air and pungent scent of the daily catch. The movie transports you to Gloucester, Massachusetts and lovingly drops you into the life of one family. Seventeen-year-old Ruby Rossi (Emilia Jones) is what the title of the movie refers to—a child of deaf adults.

3. A Charlie Brown Christmas

We could get into plenty of arguments over which Charlie Brown animated special is best, but A Charlie Brown Christmas is my favorite pull of the bunch. Charlie Brown’s confrontation with the Christmas season’s commercialism (back in 1965 no less) and a sad little fir tree make this a cartoon classic, as the ultimate funny-pages shlimazel suffers endless social indignities (no Christmas cards) and the holiday blues.

2. Wolfwalkers

Wolfwalkers is filmmaker and animator Tomm Moore’s latest project out of Cartoon Saloon, the animation studio he co-founded in 1999 with Paul Young, and the capper to his loosely bound Irish folklore trilogy (begun with 2009’s The Secret of Kells and continued with 2014’s Song of the Sea). At first blush, the film appears burdened with too much in mind—chiefly thoughts on everything from English colonialism to earnest portraiture of Irish myths, the keystones of Moore’s storytelling for the last decade.

1. Killers of the Flower Moon

Martin Scorsese has made a career telling stories that tackle issues of justice, retribution and betrayal. From his overt and poetic crime films, through to his dark comedies, religious parables and character pieces, he has long been drawn to stories where the ambiguities of life collide with the complexities of survival, and where day-to-day choices result in consequences sometimes obvious, and sometimes far more subtle and insidious.

2024.05.21 11:10 Stylish_aesthetic My love letter to younger me / breakup letter to the Bahais :)

I'd like to share a lengthy and self-indulgent note about my history with the Baha'i community and the impact it had on my family and me. It's worth noting that I'm sharing this using a throwaway Reddit account that I generally reserve for browsing porn. I find funny to imagine a Baha'i apologist reading this, becoming angry and judgmental, and then, investigating my profile and ending up jerking off. With that said, let's dive into my story.
I want to share my experience in case it resonates with someone else, a lot of the stories on this Reddit helped me, and perhaps my story will give some comfort to someone else. It has taken me a while to write this down, and I'm glad I finally got around to doing it.
My parents emigrated from their homeland for reasons of principle and value. Upon their arrival, they were greeted by Baha'is who met them. And so, lovebombed and lavished with love, praise, and celebration for moving countries due to values that they portrayed as being closely aligned with the Baha'i faith, my parents fell for this validation and worked very hard once they became Baha'is in the mid-1980s.
My dad got rid of all of his whiskies, and swiftly, my parents began hosting potlucks and fireside chats, diligently working to integrate into the Baha'i ecosystem. Back then, the atmosphere was fairly light-hearted, with devotional gatherings, prayers, and a somewhat 1960s-esque hippie vibe. There was live guitar music, and joss sticks.
However, I remember Baha'i classes having an interesting edge. We were taught that Buddhists were not following a religion but merely a way of life, and that Hindus had become pantheistic because they had lost the core of their faith and religion, which had become corrupted over time. Thanks to Google, I can discover that yes indeed, this is from Lights of Guidance.
There was a significant emphasis on the importance of gender equality and the oneness of humanity – because, hey, the eighties. I feel sad there isn't anything anymore about the Virtues project - even if the Virtues project was sort of framed like it was created by Bahais.
Even in the 1980s, there was an overwhelming atmosphere that the key to being a good Baha'i was how you presented yourself rather than your actual behaviour. I recall learning an apocryphal tale of a young Baha'i who, while fasting, participated in an aerobics class and nearly fainted (yeah, aerobics, this is a real 80s fable), but was told by another Baha'i to prioritize representing the faith well over completing the fast because *it looked bad*. From a very early age, I learned the importance of putting the right face forward.
My parents then took their relationship with the Baha'i faith to the next level and volunteered at the World Centre in Haifa. As a child, this was a pretty interesting experience. I was suddenly immersed in the Iranian, or rather, Persian community, with its strong culture of martyrdom. Even as a child, every event seemed to feature graphic videos depicting young kids being taken from their homes. It was quite frightening, and I remember being afraid.
I also recall a strong sense of hierarchy within the community. My family lived in a small apartment with a very old, busted-up car from the 1970s, while others resided in nice homes with pleasant views and drove nice cars. I attended a local Israeli school, which was a cultural experience in itself, while my peers my age went to the much fancier American school. It's important to note that, at this point, the conversation about the "great catastrophe" – two-thirds of the world's population dying, leading to a period of peace and the entry by troops – was a prevalent topic openly discussed at the World Centre.
We completed our stint there, even living through the Gulf War. Upon returning to my birth country, my parents chose to live in places with smaller Baha'i communities, as they wanted to support and help establish Local Spiritual Assemblies. Things had changed by this point, not only because I was a teenager but also because the community itself had transformed. There was a significant Iranian presence everywhere, and the focus had shifted heavily towards rules, especially those related to sex, drinking, and drug use. There was also a huge emphasis on financial contributions to the faith, and it was the first time I began to see a somewhat materialistic outlook within the community.
As a preteen and teenager, I engaged in activities like dropping off flyers in mailboxes and soliciting strangers to talk about this great new religion, all in the name of “teaching”. I joined the local choir and sang, inspired by a crush I had on a girl there. This was probably the golden time of the community, with the choir doing outreach and a balance between Western and Iranian believers.
However, things began to accelerate. The Ruhi Institute and teaching became significant focal points. I was encouraged to bring a good friend of mine to a Baha'i camp, and once there, I was pressured to ask him to convert. It was very uncomfortable.
This Reddit loves cringe stories, so here is a winner: I had a birthday party with my non-Baha'i friends, and two older Baha'i girls attended. One of the girls ended up stalking my friend, showing up at his workplace and calling him at home with sexually suggestive comments. The matter was escalated to the Local Spiritual Assembly, but instead of talking to me about it, they basically ended my friendship with this kid. To me, this somehow captures so much of what it was like to be a Baha'i child and how Baha'i adults treat children to this day.
When I turned 15, I signed up for Baha'i membership because it was the expected thing to do. However, by the time I was in my early 20s and studying at university, I had started to interact more with the local, real-world community. This might seem like a small thing, but it was actually quite significant. You see, my parents had always felt a little bit on the outside compared to the average person on the street around them. This sense of elitism was really exacerbated by being a Baha'i because Baha'is would walk around in a cloud of self-assurance, slapping each other on the back and saying , "We don't do drugs. We've got all the answers and solutions, not like you." That was pretty much the attitude. It felt very socio-economic, with a lot of judgment towards working-class people. When the Iranians arrived, the cultural judgments grew even stronger.
But I was working in restaurants and learning about booze from bartenders. I had gotten to know real people. I had lost my virginity, and all that Bahai jazz seemed so much less relevant. I hardly even noticed when the year 2000 arrived without the predicted apocalypse, entry by troops, or any of the other anticipated events. Life went on. I lived in another country and met a girl, and we lived together.
Here is cringe story #2: my girlfriend /fiancé and I hosted a Bahai couple from my hometown. Despite being in my late 20s and engaged, and even though I hosted this gentleman in my house and helped him with his preparations for his business and presentations in the country where I lived, he reported to the Local Spiritual Assembly that I was living with a woman and we weren't married. It was absolutely amazing. The level of judgment still grosses me out.
I started to reflect on what the religion had meant to me and saw how it had changed. The obsession with fundraising was becoming ever more strident and panicked. The gaps in the actual scriptural logic of the religion were becoming more exacerbated as real-world problems still ran rife, and real-time discussions on social media brought these issues to light. It took me a while to start really digging into it, and it was only much later, when I started therapy, that I realized I needed to formally resign from the religion.
Looking back, it's astonishing how this religion, which professes to have such blind equality between the genders, as if other religions have some kind of hardwired sexism, actually had hardwired sexism in how the Universal House of Justice operates. A religion that taught the oneness of humanity, as if all humanity is equal and other religions don't recruit from anyone they can find, places divisors. Although of course, Bahai’s can’t recruit from Israeli Jews, so much for oneness of humanity. But this religion has taught that all humanity is equal, unless, of course, you're gay. Then you can't get married, let alone have sex.
There are other principles I haven't touched on, such as non-involvement in politics, unless it involves things happening to Baha'is or politics in Iran. The principle of independent investigation of the truth doesn't seem to work if you might investigate something that's not in line with the Baha'i perspective. The idea of a universal language? I don't really see any evidence that they're even really thinking about that one. The unity between science and religion? A religion that only allows men to sit on its senior board of a global theocracy probably isn't going to jive with a contemporary scientific perspective…. I mean, apparently you don't need a penis to be a man anymore, right?
In between these moments are my colorful memories of random things, like endless discussions about the boundaries of physical intimacy, people getting married at the age of 16 because they had exemptions for being Persian, and meeting Ms. Khanoom in Israel, feeling some sadness that the lone woman who at least brought some feminine energy to the World Centre is now gone, replaced by 12 boring men.
I've had conversations with my wife where I tried to explain what Baha'is actually do. She just wonders why they aren't doing stuff like normal religions do, like reading to the elderly or supporting schools for the disabled. I explain that's not the target demographic. I remember a wealthy man brought to firesides who obviously nobody else wanted to listen to, but we all sat around and applauded him like he was a great ukulele player and a clever man. He pointed out a hilariously Iranian man who was an alternative healer, and they got into a debate about modern medicine. The wealthy man said, "Well, you should see my daughter and what she studied. She studies Law." And then quickly changed the subject when asked about her name since I studied at the same Law school. Here's this man who's self-aware enough to join the adoration of his crowd but doesn't want his daughter mixed up in it in any way. Absolutely hilarious. Make that cringe story #3.
This reflection was sort of sparked when my wife and I discovered that the writings attributed to Rumi, which Baha'is often quote, is the same guy who started the Whirling Dervishes. We read about Rumi and I realized just how different he is from Baha'u'llah. Rumi wrote poetry, but he didn't pretend to be a prophet of God. He was just offering a different dynamic for how to interpret spirituality. He didn't say he was part of some sort of cycle. There's something beautiful about that simplicity. And needless to say, Rumi lived long before the Baha'is ever started.
It makes me wonder, will anyone ever watch the equivalent of a whirling dervish dance for the Baha'is?
The obsession with appearances sounds like a joke, but it isn't. It wasn't for me. Some bad stuff happened to me on my trip to Israel. When we got there, my parents didn't understand why I was so upset about everything. It was a culture shock, attending a local school, not speaking Hebrew, being lumped together with Russian kids who also didn't speak Hebrew, and getting beaten up in the toilet. It wasn't a very good time for me.
So, I was sent to counsel with a local Israeli counselor. After several sessions, she instructed that I had to sit down with my parents and tell them what I needed to tell them, particularly about the shadow that had come over me since coming to Israel. My parents were enraged when I said, “I wish we never became Bahai”.
And so, we returned from the Holy Land and moved to a tiny community that was struggling to get members. To this day, my parents are still members. I've resigned so I'm never dubbed a "covenant breaker." I'm pretty sure my parents know that I resigned because they literally never raise the topic of the Baha'i faith with me. I wish the religion had some interesting cosmology, something mystical, some interesting new take on the universe, or provided my family with tools to handle being migrants or raising teenagers. At the very least, it could have given us a common language we could have used to bond together. It did none of that.
But to be fair, if it wasn't the Baha'is, some other rinky-dink cult would have love-bombed my parents back in the 1980s. Of course, it would have been so much more fun if it had featured more sex and drugs 😊

2024.05.21 10:48 ReaperLaww Do not loose hope!!

Hi guys, so this post is basically about a friend of mine. She and I attended the same university and became very good friends. She was good in her studies and was one of the shinning stars of our batch. She didn't follow our career path( thats her personal choice) maybe because she belonged to a very well off family. Whenever i used to ask her k yr tm kuch kr nai rai, waleyan mar rai ho, kuch krlo, kheti thi mjhe zaroorat nai ha, and we would laugh it off. Her father worked in real estate, very nice and friendly man, but due to some frauds in his business he incurred heavy losses that they had to sell their house in Dha lahore and moved to a rental house in early 2023. She used to tell me that his father is under a lot of stress as he had to repay the investors and no one is helping them, not even few words of encouragement. Their relatives and old neighbours used to check up on them but they to gradually stopped doing it. In the end of 2023, maybe october or November, her father passed away due to a heart attack. They family of three were left devastated ( my friend, her littler brother and her mother). The life insurance of her father covered almost all of their debt. With no source of income, she started searching of jobs in our field, but Because she had no prior experience, no good firm was hiring her. Many of our friends from our circle tried to help her financially, but she straight up refused saying that my father raised a strong willed girl and she will not succumb to such means. I remember she used to say, jo bhi krna ha khud krna ha. So in 2024 she started working and researching how e commerce worked. Recently she launched her online store where she has listed international beauty and skin care products.
This post is not to ask anyone for financial help or anything of that sort, i just wanted to share her story of resilience. I hope Allah Pak eases her path and gives her the will to continue. Ameen.
For those intrested to check her store/page out, her store is under www.glow-avenue.store and her business' Instagram handle is under @glowavenue.store
Do follow her page and check out her store.

Quotes:
"Like many Trekkies, I came to "Star Trek" at an early age. Throughout the 1980s, reruns of the original series would air on my local station (KCOP, channel 13 in Los Angeles), and they would serve as a periodic video backdrop to our dinnertimes. As a child, "Star Trek" was merely an action-light, horror-heavy sci-fi adventure series, and my older sister and I would gleefully yell out when Spock (Leonard Nimoy) performed his notorious Vulcan nerve pinch, or when Captain Kirk (William Shatner) got to snog an itinerant babe. We would hide our heads from the monster of the week; like many, I was terrified by the scowling face of Balok, the Ted Cassidy-voiced puppet alien from "The Corbomite Maneuver" (November 10, 1966).
Perhaps unusually for a child, I wasn't powerfully drawn to action, fights, or explosions in my entertainment. I would indeed watch the era's toyetic wartime cartoons like "Transformers" and "G.I. Joe," of course, but I didn't care deeply for the characters, nor have much invested in their dramatic stakes. I had trouble taking the "oorah" action seriously, perhaps already innately understanding that the cartoon soldiers were fictional and their triumphs were only temporary; what is the meaning of a victory when the bad guys will merely return the following week?
I only realized this in retrospect, but "Star Trek" was secretly providing an antidote to the breathless mayhem oozing from every pore of my generation's childhood entertainment. It was a series that, despite bad guys, monsters, and fights, was ultimately teaching intense lessons of diplomacy and leadership. The crew of the Enterprise weren't "violent/cool," and I liked that. Finally, I realized, here was a show about pacifism.
And, yes, "Star Trek" communicated themes of pacifism. It might have been a fluke of 1960s special effects budgets, but "Star Trek" rarely showed the USS Enterprise firing off its weapons or getting into full-scale starship battles. The common playground pop culture query of "who would win in a fight?" seemed churlish with "Star Trek." Would Kirk win in a fight with, say, Han Solo? Even as a wee bairn, I had to ask why Kirk and Han Solo would be fighting in the first place. I figured Spock would merely ask Han Solo about his ship while Kirk invited him in for a meal. Power, "Star Trek" argued, wasn't derived from one's ability to dominate and overwhelm others with tactics and weapons prowess, but to negotiate, adapt, and remain friendly.
[...]
Whether "Star Trek" taught me to be a pacifist or whether I was already a pacifist can be debated, but creator Gene Roddenberry and I were definitely on the same wavelength. "Star Trek" took place in a post-war universe at a time when humans had outgrown the need to kill each other for resources, and petty political grievances were a thing of the past.
[...]
Star Trek is for nerds, and that's a good thing
While it may be a cliché, I still maintain that "Star Trek" is for nerds. That is, I should hasten to add, a high compliment. With the release of "Next Generation," I was given my clearest, most refreshing draft of action-antidote. I began to realize that the rest of the American viewing public longed for conflict and war and action in their entertainment, with boys my age constantly raving about the latest 'splosion-fest that evoked the word "awesome."
Meanwhile, over on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," the universe had already graduated, moved into the stars, and gave up on action altogether. Oh sure, Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) was handy with a phaser, Worf (Michael Dorn) could murder you with a bat'leth, and the USS Enterprise-D needed to employ some sneaky battlefield tactics to outgun the Borg (or any number of other opponents), but one always got the sense that weapons and fights were a last-ditch tactic, a formality that must be seen through before an understanding could be reached. War was to be avoided at all costs.
What's more, there were classical references! Whenever Picard quoted Shakespeare, my heart would sing. By the time I turned 13 (when NextGen had just finished its fourth season), I too was getting into Shakespeare and Picard emerged as a teacher, a fictional professor that you didn't want to disappoint. I finally realized that the nerdy sci-fi technicalities of "Star Trek," along with its classical obsessions, workplace propriety, devotion to diplomacy, multicultural mindsets, and ability to brainstorm open-minded solutions to complex problems ... these were all aspirational states. Scoop in a few ethical dilemmas — racism, euthanasia, gender politics — and "Trek" gave me everything.
Star Trek obsession is healthy, actually
Like with the original series, the peacefulness of "Next Generation" could easily have been a product of its budget; without the money to stage massive phaser battles, fights and scrapes rarely rose above the skirmish level. This, by necessity, required the show to de-emphasize violence. The makers of "NextGen" also couldn't afford to visit alien worlds regularly, forcing them to shoot on the same six or seven sets week after week.
The limitations, however, allowed Trekkies to enjoy our time on board the Enterprise. "Star Trek" is, after all, a workplace drama above anything else, and we loved seeing the characters do their jobs on an day-to-day basis. We lived with the Enterprise crew long enough that we started to get a sense of how the ship worked. That, in turn, led directly into fantasies of living in "Star Trek," knowing we could operate the machinery if asked. It also didn't seem so terrible to live in a world that was devoted to science, peace, and diplomacy.
[...]
When J.J. Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" reboot film came out, the franchise was altered to be one of the usual action flicks that "Trek" previously eschewed. It appealed to a mass audience. Conversations began as to what constituted "real Trek," leading directly into additional conversations about gatekeeping, fandom, and franchise evolution. Is "Star Trek" for nerds, or can it appeal to — for lack of a better term — jocks?
Conversations between Trekkies in the 1990s were impassioned, but rarely caustic (at least in my experience). In 2009, however, notions of fan toxicity were more openly acknowledged among pop obsessives, and people became angrier about their obsessions. All of a sudden, I was an "old school" Trekkie.
I was 31 and okay being "old school." After all, decades had passed since "Next Generation," a series that responded to Ronald Reagan and flourished during the 1990s. Why shouldn't it adjust again? I didn't like the franchise's actioned-up response to 9/11, but I was still happy to have debates as to what "Star Trek" meant and what modern action films communicated.
"Trek" taught me to negotiate ... about "Trek."
What Star Trek means today
I am on record with my feelings about the Paramount+ era of "Star Trek," and I have frequently been rather critical. I want to go on record, however, that my criticisms are not based in misplaced nostalgia, prejudicial hate against new "Star Trek," nor a gradually closing mind (an unfortunate affliction that can sometimes strike people rounding middle age). Indeed, I have liked a great deal of the "Star Trek" shows that have debuted since 2017. I think "Star Trek: Lower Decks" perfectly balances humor and irreverence with notable "Star Trek" themes of growth and maturity. "Lower Decks" is about lower-ranking officers who have the crappiest jobs on a Starfleet vessel, and struggle to grow up when they have a twentysomething's instincts toward laziness and bad decision-making. "Star Trek" is about adults, and "Lower Decks" sees people becoming adults.
Likewise, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" returns to an episodic structure, allowing for miniature dramas and handily-packaged morality plays to be presented more cleanly than the broad arcs of "Discovery" or "Picard." I only wince at "Star Trek" when it violates its own principles or lazily falls into action-based stories that (perhaps unwittingly) glorify combat, war, and aggression. And make no mistake, these kinds of stories were always part of the franchise; they didn't start in 2017.
I love "Star Trek" deeply because of its radical, aggressive optimism. It envisions a world, and a form of entertainment, that downplays conflict. Drama and power can come from elsewhere. The future, "Trek" always declared, was going to be populated by nerds, miracle tech, and egalitarianism. And what's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?
War was our awkward adolescence, "Trek" said, and our adulthood is in the stars."

2024.05.21 08:59 yaiyen Japan in the 1980s: when Tokyo’s Imperial Palace was worth more than California and golf club membership could cost US$3 million – 5 crazy facts about the bubble economy

From fraud fuelled by a stock market-predicting ceramic frog to the ‘economic Pearl Harbour’ which saw Japanese companies buy up New York’s Rockefeller Center and Hollywood’s Columbia Pictures, East Asia’s economic golden age was one wild time for those at the top.
The mid- and late-1980s were the years of Japan’s “bubble economy”, a time when the country was at its economic peak. It was awash with money, fuelling evermore conspicuous consumption, and Western scholars, spurred on by books like Ezra Vogel’s Japan as Number One (1979), sought to predict when Japan would surpass the United States as having the largest economy in the world.
Of course, that story never came to pass. At the end of 1989, the Nikkei 225 stock market reached 39,000, a historic high. Three years later, more than half of that had been wiped out with the market at just 17,000 by the end of 1992.
However, while the good times rolled, Japan enjoyed unprecedented wealth. Here are five crazy facts from that time. The Imperial Palace in Tokyo was worth more than all of California.
Between 1956 and 1986, the price of land increased by as much as 5,000 per cent in Japan. At the peak of the bubble economy, Tokyo real estate could sell for as much as US$139,000 per square foot, which was nearly 350 times as much as equivalent space in Manhattan. By that reckoning, the Imperial Palace in Tokyo was worth as much as the entire US state of California.
It wasn’t just Tokyo that was super expensive, though. Despite Japan occupying the equivalent of only four per cent of the land mass of the entire US – Japan is about the same size as California – the value of the Japanese property market was four-times greater than that of the USA.
Land-price inflation was so distorted that land constituted 65 per cent of Japan’s national wealth, compared to just 2.5 per cent for the UK at the time.
As the Japanese economy prospered there developed an increasing appreciation for the sport of golf. With their aura of exclusivity, golf club memberships were in high demand – and came at attendant high prices. It has been estimated that the value of club membership, as a tradeable commodity, shot up by 400 per cent between 1982 and 1989 – and then an additional 190 per cent in 1989 at the height of the bubble.
Membership of the most exclusive country clubs could cost as much as ¥400 million (US$3.7 million) – the cost of entire golf courses in other countries. As a result, the Nikkei Golf Club Membership Index was created to monitor the value of golf club memberships – and at its zenith the total market value of memberships was estimated at an astounding US$200 billion.
In 1985, Japan, France, West Germany, the UK and the US signed the Plaza Accord, which aimed to lower the value of the dollar in relation to the Yen and German Deutsche Mark. The intention was to make American exports cheaper, easing America’s trade deficit.

2024.05.21 06:51 Proof_Ad_5770 Another anniversary

Huh, so I just realized that this coming weekend will be 10 years since the last time I was physically sexually assaulted.
I was molested by a neighbor during pre-school so don’t know what the Anniversary date of that was, and was raped/molested/traded out by my older brother from 3rd grade - 8th grade so don’t really have any Anniversary dates for that Just other triggers. I was gang raped by a group of high schoolers when I was in 6th grade but it all blended in with everything else and I knew I couldn’t tell anyone after what happened when I told my mom about the neighbor and my brother when I was 10 so no real adversary date for that either. My older brother tried to rape me one last time when I was 18 in August but again, just blends. When I was 23 I had a stalker for a year that broke in 3 times and raped me but that was back in the early 2000’s when universities didn’t take that stuff seriously at all so I just tried to kill myself. It wasn’t the first time. The first time I tried that was when I was 10 and my mom yelled at me for trying to embarrass her. Just like later when I started to cut myself she said that if I messed up her summer plans she would kill me, I guess if I had been smarter I could have gotten her to kill me instead of trying to hang myself and taking jars of pills.
My liver was destroyed at 20 years old from trying to kill myself with Tylenol… No one tells kids that they pump your stomach but Tylenol destroys your liver and kills you slowly.
Anyway so where was I? Oh my early 20’s. Things calmed down for a little bit other than having an unmedicated traumatized bipolar husband and having to take care of him and my mother and brother and everyone else because I’m a people pleaser and have no value.
Oh I forgot to talk about how I was stabbed in the face and my brother used to test the sharpness of his knives on me and hold me down and burn me with a magnifying glass. He was the golden child and I had to testify in court about what a great role model he was and great big brother when he was arrested for bringing a gun to school.
So my husband liked to open our marriage every once in a while which I am not a fan of but no one loves me anyway so there it is and fast forward to 2014 and I was hospitalized for trying to kill myself again and was unconscious for several days because I got much better at getting the pill mix right and I tried to have friends for a change which I never do and so went camping with friends and woke you with an uninvited dick k in my mouth that I just didn’t want there and then he kicked the crap out of me and told everyone I messed up his vibes… so back to not having friends.
I have done everything in my power to make my life as good as possible since then. I have always worked hard and has respectable jobs and taken care of the people around me…
Now I have a neighbor who threatens to rape and kill me regularly and has for a year and a half (he’s been arrested for felony stalking and threats but they released him and keep pushing back trial so I can’t go outside other than to run to my car for work), my brother who abused me stole everything from my parents after they died even though I took care of them 24/7 and did all the worker to take care of their estates so I’m in a court case against him but never want to see his child raping ass again, my last job literally bullied me so badly because I’m autistic that I could barely function and they broke tons off laws but I can’t ignore stuff like that or injustice so now I’m a plaintiff in a case against them as well… my husband… he’s always unhappy and snippy and never hears a word I say it’s about him or something he wants.
And last week a client I was driving home described how he wanted to rape me in great detail and my boss acted like I should just be cool with that.
Today a client offered to have sex with me. I know I’m fat/ugly/unfashionable and I always nip anything inappropriate in the bud when they hint at it - but there it is.
Honestly, in the other side of all that with a husband who has no interest in me except how he sees me fulfilling his image of his goals and needs but who has been going through a medicating juggling nightmare for 5 years and sees straight through me, I need to get laid so bad (a I am not going to have sex with my client, not even an option, I have crazy strict levels of ethics and it would be har full/predatory to him and I actually do the work I do to HELP folks.)
Why can’t someone ever like me for me though and not sick transference ways or just using me?
Why do I bring this shit out in people?

The Secret Subliminal War Between Kendrick Lamar and Drake
I don’t think people realize that Drake and Kendrick have been having a back and forth in their songs since before "First Person Shooter." Yes, we all know they’ve been sending subliminals to each other for over a decade and have been beefing for a while now, but since "DAMN.," no one has really paid attention to the subliminals in their music, and they’ve been directly responding to each other in songs for a while now.
Here’s some backstory on where I think this modern beef started. On March 5, 2021, Drake released the song "What’s Next." The song was originally supposed to have Baby Keem on it, but his verse was left off, and it was just Drake on the song. I’m just going to leave this information here because it might play into the later disses.

Where I think the disses really start is on "Family Ties" with Kendrick Lamar. This song is the first official collaboration between Keem and Kendrick. It comes five months after What’s Next. In Kendrick’s verse, he states that he’s:
"Smokin' on your top five tonight, tonight
Yeah, I'm smokin' on your, what's his name, tonight, tonight."
This could be aimed at anybody in the game, but I think it’s directly targeted towards Drake based on the “what’s his name,” since Drake and Rihanna have a song called “What’s My Name.” Kendrick is saying he’s smoking on Drake.
Throughout Kendrick’s verse, he starts calling himself the GOAT and explains why he’s been absent in the game before this. At the end of the track, Baby Keem says:
"Number two DM'ing my bitch
That's cool, I don't ask why."
"Number two" here refers to Drake, as number one would be Kendrick Lamar. Drake is known for DMing people’s girls and stuff like that; Baby Keem says Drake is DMing his girl and is confused.

It’s been about a year since "Family Ties," and Kendrick releases his next studio album in five years. The album is supposed to address his demons and is about his growth and maturity through therapy. I think there are some subliminal on here towards Drake.
Father Time
This entire track is Kendrick addressing the issue of parenthood, specifically fatherhood, and the toxic nature of present and absent fathers due to the toxic masculinity that is passed through generations. It’s interesting that this is the track where Kendrick directly mentions Drake's name since we know later on Kendrick would call Drake a bad/absent father and call his father absent as well.
"When Kanye got back with Drake, I was slightly confused
Guess I'm not mature as I think, got some healin' to do."
Kanye and Drake got back together for the Larry Hoover concert, and here Kendrick is confused about why Kanye “made up” with Drake. He realized he’s not as mature as he thinks and has some healing to do because he wouldn’t get back with Drake like Kanye did.
Rich Spirit
I think "Rich Spirit" might be the real warning shot towards Drake. I also think this is a direct reply to "Toosie Slide." The entire "Rich Spirit" video is him alone in his house, away from fame and society. There are a lot of lines here that, in retrospect, seem to be Kendrick telling Drake what a real “Rich Spirit” is. For example:
"Takin' my baby to school, then I pray for her."
This is something Kendrick directly attacks Drake for in his diss tracks.
"And celebrity do not mean integrity, you fool."
Kendrick is saying that celebrity does not equal integrity. He also uses this same angle in his diss tracks later on.
"Stop playin' with me 'fore I turn you to a song (Yeah)
Stop playin' with me 'fore I turn you to a song (Ooh)."
This is pretty obvious. Kendrick is telling Drake to stop playing with him before he turns him into a song (diss track) like he did with "Not Like Us."
Here’s where I think it gets even more obvious:
"Ayy, clout chasing hell of a disease, brother
I'm fasting four days out the week, brother
I pray to God that you realize the entourage is dead
I pray to God that you not lackin' when you off the meds
I pray to God she knows them Cabo trips don't last forever
Bet she argues with her momma, go and get them kids."
Everything Kendrick says here is exactly what he says to Drake in his diss tracks. He mentions meds, his entourage is against him, calls him out for his trips to islands, and calls him a clout chaser. This is clearly referencing Drake.
These lines directly reference J Prince, like he does in "Euphoria":
"I pray to God you actually pray when somebody dies
Thoughts and prayers, way better off timelines
False claimin' not cute, I'm mortified
The new Earth in hot pursuit, two-hundred lives."
He says the exact same thing to J Prince in "Euphoria."
He also says:
“I would never live my life on the computer IG'll get you life for a chikabooya More power to ya, love 'em from a distance Why you always in the mirror more than the bitches?”
Drake is known for his antics online and Instagram captions/Internet culture. This one’s also pretty obvious.
Honestly, Nevermind
https://preview.redd.it/hhptm12nbp1d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=87ccec540b1538faa76f59c155994690808250cc
Drake responds to Kendrick on his album "Honestly, Nevermind." What’s important to realize here is that this album dropped on Kendrick’s birthday. The entire album is club-inspired music and was something people did not expect, and he dropped it on Kendrick’s birthday on purpose. It was to showcase to Kendrick that he can make music that Kendrick couldn’t. The entire album is club-inspired music except for the last track “Sticky” with 21 Savage. On this track, Drake states:
"Couple hits, now you brave, boy
You n**** better behave (What)
All that pumpin' up your chest (What)
All that talk about the best (What)
You know how sticky it gets."
He’s telling Kendrick to behave and stop talking about how he’s the best like he did on "Family Ties." Now what’s very interesting is that Kendrick & Baby Keem directly respond to this track on "The Hillbillies." I don’t think people realize that "The Hillbillies" is a direct response to this. But before The Hillbillies was the "America Has a Problem" remix with Beyoncé. This entire verse is clearly a Drake diss.
America Has a Problem Remix
https://preview.redd.it/41ncfnysbp1d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=4f1ba1948e5a70de84ac6b88fea298655a8ab95f
"Geeked up, choosy love, well, they chose violence
Universal, please don't play possum
I'm a businessman doin' as follows
Truthfully, I be lyin' in my rap song
'Cause I always fail to mention I'd slap homie
His career didn't come with no life insurance
Hope his day-one fans got some facts on him."
He calls out Universal (UMG), saying he’s just a businessman doing as he chooses. He states that he’s lying in songs because he fails to mention he’ll slap somebody. He states that this person's career didn’t come with life insurance and hopes his day-one fans have some facts on him. He’s clearly referring to Drake here.
"Them diamonds don't be fly, they all CGI
You better get it off your chest like breast reduction
If she stressed over you, she stressed for nothin'."
In these lines, he calls Drake's diamonds fake and states that Drake should get it off his chest like breast reduction. He’s mocking his surgery yet again. Then the “if she stressed over you, she stressed for nothing” is a subliminal towards Drake’s latest album before this track, "Her Loss," stating that it’s not her loss since if she’s stressed over Drake, she isn’t stressed for anything.
Next, he says:
"Even AI gotta practice clonin' Kendrick
The double entendre, the encore remnants
I bop like ten men, the opps need ten men."
During the time when this track came out, there was AI Drake music blowing up. Kendrick is saying that even AI needs to practice to clone him, using a double entendre to imply he’s unmatched. He is saying the opps “need ten men” aka the ghostwriters, he is calling Drake easily replaceable. Now onto The Hillbillies.
The Hillbillies
https://preview.redd.it/5ugsqc2wbp1d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=fac50b242aec856fea19f304ff08264c94d460c9
"The Hillbillies" was released on May 30, 2023. The entire track is completely different from the music that Kendrick normally makes. It’s a track where he’s flexing, and it’s over a club-inspired beat and flow. Baby Keem even called it a “Sticky” remix. So this track is basically Kendrick saying that he can do what Drake did on "Honestly, Nevermind," but better.
First, let’s look at the title of the track. It is called “The Hillbillies.”
On "Sticky," Drake says that he’s:
"King of the hill, you know it's a steep one."
Drake calls himself the king of the hill, Kendrick & Keem call themselves the Hillbillies, you get it.
Now let’s look at some lines in the track:
"Messi, get them girls off the stage, 'cause somebody's gonna get taken
Somebody's gonna invade on a one-on-one conversation
I'm ducked off from the world, I'm immersed in the PlayStation."
This is a direct response to "Sticky" when Drake says:
"Ayo Eric, bring them girls to the stage
'Cause somebody's getting paid."
Throughout this entire track, Kendrick and Keem are mocking Drake and his flow on "Sticky," showcasing they can do anything he can do and better. They’re rapping about the things he’ll rap about. Also what I find interesting about the music video is that they have Tyler in it and announce that they will be headlining Camp Flog Gnaw in the video, where Drake famously got booed off stage. Could be a reach but still.
In July a month after this track, Drake on stage during his tour said “he is not like those rappers who disappear for 4 or 5 years”. So another subliminal towards Kendrick.
Meltdown
https://preview.redd.it/spcuz8zybp1d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=8d636950b1706368297a514c110e1a4351f06ded
Drake responds to the disses on "Meltdown," which was released two months later on Travis Scott’s album. While this verse is mainly about Kanye/Pusha, I also think it can relate to Kendrick as well.
"I love to fuck on a regular bitch
Famous hoes lame, but they stay on my dick
Heard your new joint, it's embarrassing, shit."
On "Hillbillies," Kendrick/Keem rap about wanting a regular girl instead of a famous girl, and on "Meltdown," Drake says the same thing, also calling their new stuff embarrassing.
"Your bodyguard put in some work on a fluke
Now you wanna go and inherit that shit
Don't talk to
the boy 'bout comparisons, shit
Or come to the boy on some arrogant shit."
More bodyguards talk, and he’s telling people not to compare him to anybody. We all know who he really means.
“I melt down the chains that I bought from yo' boss
Give a fuck about all of that heritage shit.”
Kendrick directly responds to this, saying he inherited the beef from Pharrell since Drake was disrespecting him. Now here’s where I think it gets obvious. On the second verse, Travis says:
"The boy going Lionel Messi, I go Tom Brady (Woo)."
In the track "The Hillbillies," Keem is calling Kendrick Messi and himself Neymar. Now in this track, which comes out two months later, Drake is comparing himself to Messi.
Also he says in this song "You act like you love this American shit, but really the truth is you scared of the 6" which could be a response to the title "America Has a Problem", this might be a reach though.
First Person Shooter
https://preview.redd.it/emn9lgd2cp1d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=fc52eeee5b1834f392c657c306dff32dab17746a
After "Meltdown," we get "First Person Shooter," which we all know ignited this beef even further. I have a theory about this track, though. I believe that Drake originally sent Kendrick the track to hop on, but Kendrick denied the feature request. I think the original "First Person Shooter" was going to feature Drake, Cole, and Kendrick rapping over the first beat of the song. I believe the beat switch was made after Kendrick denied the feature request, and Drake added it later. This is why Kendrick says on his diss tracks:
"Surprised you sent that feature request, you know we got some shit to address" and "Did Cole foul, I don’t know why you still pretending."
Drake wanted to squash the subliminal beef he had with Kendrick with the feature request, and when Kendrick denied it, he thought it was real beef.
Look at the second half of "FPS":
"My youngins richer than you rappers and they all stream
I really hate that you been sellin' them some false dreams
Man, if your pub was up for sale, I buy the whole thing
Will they ever give me flowers? Well, of course not
They don't wanna have that talk, 'cause it's a sore spot
They know The Boy, the one they gotta boycott
I told Jimmy Jam I use a GRAMMY as a door stop."
Drake gets way more aggressive in the second half of the track and states that Kendrick is selling people false dreams, he is broke, they won't give him his flowers, he is at the top, and that he doesn't care about GRAMMYs (which is what Drake mocks Kendrick for in "Family Matters").
Then he says:
"What the fuck, bro? I'm one away from Michael
N***, beat it, n****, beat it, what?"
He compares himself to Michael Jackson and even says he will beat his record, which Kendrick directly responds to in "Like That." At the end of the track, Drake says: "Don't even pay me back on none of them favors, I don't need it."
We know that Drake feels like he put on Kendrick and that Kendrick would be nowhere without him, so he rubs that in his face. This verse is where I think Kendrick really took it as a threat rather than just the big three line. That was a part of it, but I think this is what really set Kendrick off. Also interestingly in this video Drake recreates the Messi/Ronaldo picture with J. Cole and compares himself to Messi AGAIN.
Another thing, in the second verse Drake says:
“I click the trigger on the stick like a high beam”
So in Like That when Kendrick says “if he walk around with that stick, it ain’t Andre 3k” it could be reffering to this line as well since that track is a direct response to this song. At first most people thought the stick line was about Cole but we know Kendrick calls out Drake for acting tough later on, so it could be a response to this line as well.
Red Button
https://preview.redd.it/y8zhrmr5cp1d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=6d40f3c901c2afecd20743066c736c3f29e2a6ba
A month after this track, Drake releases “Red Button” on "Scary Hours 3," and I also think this is about Kendrick Lamar (and Kanye, but we are focusing on Dot here).
This entire track, Drake is warning people that if he presses his red button, it will be over for certain people. This red button thing obviously refers to Kendrick since during their diss tracks, Drake was constantly talking about pushing the red button and posting images of red buttons.
“N**** think it's sweet, but I am not a diabetic patient
No, I will start blackin' over here like it's segregation
I will fuckin' double-cross you n**** like it's meditation
I'll give you a hard pill to swallow, this your medication
I will fuckin' pop up on your ass like a revelation
I could tell you better than I show you, this a demonstration
I will fuckin' leave you in the dirt like some vegetation
Chemicals is mixin' in my brain and killin' hesitation
I will fuckin' force a few shots like a vaccination
I'll get to you ten years from now like procrastination
I'll fuckin' find out wherever y'all are celebratin'
Pull up, park my Phantom on the curb like I'm Larry David
And then we'll see who's really crazy”
I have a feeling this is about Kendrick specifically based on the words he’s choosing to talk about, like segregation and procrastination. Things that he makes fun of Kendrick for in his latest disses.
After this we know what happens, Kendrick responds on Like That and the beef really ignites with the diss tracks coming out.

2024.05.21 04:31 kmrbtravel For those asking 'Please make me an itinerary' / 'hidden gems?' / 'what should my budget be?'

One of the hardest questions to answer on this subreddit is when people ask what their itinerary should be, followed by questions on what an appropriate budget would be, and then suggestions on hidden gems.
The TL;DR is that all three questions need more details if you want them to be answered.
"But kmrbtravel!" you say, "I need an itinerary if I want a budget, and a budget if I want to make an itinerary! It's all so overwhelming, and I don't know where to start! Oh but I also want to find places that have little to no tourists and are your secret hidden gems, just for that variety!"
I'm hoping this post will be a good starting point for the people above but also to let people know that for the vast majority of us, the 'basic' things recommended on Google and YouTube will be perfect! Travelling Japan is fun because there are so many things to be distracted by, and you will be spending a lot of your time wandering and trying things out, even without a detailed itinerary.

About Me

I write this spiel every time, but I'm a 25F solo traveller with friends I stay with in Japan. Played a Japanese martial art for years, and I visit Japan 3-4x every year (usually 1-2 weeks in April, 1 week in September, 1-2 weeks in late Oct/early Nov, and 1 month in December).
I'm currently on a mission to visit all 47 prefectures across Japan, and I'm at 9 right now (Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo, Shimane, Mie, Hiroshima, Okayama, Hyogo, and most recently Nagoya). You can read about my biggest and craziest trip here (especially if you're looking for suggestions outside of Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka!)
I speak and understand very basic and noob Japanese. Enough for me to get around, barely enough for me to talk to random obaasans in the onsen who are curious about my travels. I can read hiragana/katakana, and kanji still eludes me (but we'll get there!)
One thing to note about me is that I'm mostly temple/shrine oriented when I travel Japan, so I personally cannot answer questions regarding things like museums/amusement parks/etc.

What Makes Planning a Japan Trip So Hard? (And why is it harder for us to answer your questions?)

Out of any other country that I've visited, I genuinely believe that Japan has the most variety in terms of what you can do and see and can cater wildly to different kinds of people, which sometimes makes it very difficult for us to give you detailed answers. While we all have the same goal of 'exploring Japan,' I personally want to give the best answers possible. I will have different suggestions (and routes!) depending on if you can walk 30,000 steps/day, if you have young kids, if you like anime, if you like martial arts, if you like nature and hiking, if you like shrines/temples, if you don't mind crowds, if you want to just do what everyone else is doing, if you want to do more traditional things, etc. etc. This is why general questions on 'what should my itinerary be' can never fully be answered. We are not mind readers, but we're happy to help with more information.
'They all sound good to me though, and that's why I can't choose!'
Unfortunately, the reality is that you will have to choose by some point. Japan is so much fun because there is an endless amount of things to do, and you have to pick what sounds the most entertaining to you. After 9 prefectures and multiple visits to Japan, I have very, very little things that I personally didn't enjoy. We do not know who you are, and we do not know your preferences. You need to either pick for us, or give us that guidance so we can suggest appropriate itineraries for you.
In harsher terms, for the vast majority of us, an AI-made itinerary, or suggestions from Google or YouTube will satisfy your trip. What us humans can do on Reddit, is to give you specific suggestions, but we cannot give specific suggestions if you do not provide us with (somewhat) specific questions.

1. The Budget Question

I have travelled Japan with less than ¥2000/day, and have travelled with more than ¥20,000/day. The great thing about Japan is that you have the option to do both. Are you broke after plane tickets + hotels? No worries, there are tons of free sightseeing options and you can konbini or street food breakfast/lunch/dinner for very little. Do you want to splurge because this is your 'once-in-a-lifetime-trip?' Don't worry! There are tons of ways for you to sink your money in.
But to be more helpful, I'll break it down just a bit further. After hotels/planes, these are the biggest money sinks:
I'm probably forgetting things (and will update as I remember them), but Japan is REALLY good at chipping away at your wallet little bits at a time. It's not like Europe or North America where your cost is just expensive food + an expensive experience. Japan is a lot of cheap, little things that adds up quickly.
Some prices are baked in/unchanging (e.g. TeamLabs tickets or Shinkansen tickets), but many of those 'smaller things that adds up' can be quite random. I always add up my expected costs, subtract it from my total budget, and divide the remainder with the days I will be in Japan for.

2. The Itinerary Question

There are tons of great itineraries on YouTube and Google and I promise you, most of them are good enough for you to just copy/paste and experience. Use us for specific questions you may have in regards to them (e.g. I'm planning on going to xyz on abc dates, is there anything to keep in mind?) (and then we can inform you of any closures, tips, tricks, etc.).
As someone who travels a lot, I want to point out that hotspots are hot for a reason and the ones in Japan are all worth going to unless you can somehow tell it's not going to be your thing (and that's ok!) or you have a serious aversion to crowds.
How one makes an itinerary is always varied, but as someone who's good at going with the flow when travelling (and often plans very last minute), this is how I usually rumble:
0. BRING AN EMPTY SUITCASE: I usually have a slightly smaller suitcase inside of my big suitcase, and the smaller suitcase has all of my clothes + shoes. If you do this, please cover or cushion the wheels of your smaller suitcase inside. I have no idea what happens in the cargo, but I've smashed the wheels of two small suitcases (even though they were fine when they're not inside the larger suitcase). I usually just put some shoes/scarves/dark hoodies for cushioning.
My itinerary recommendations are nothing special as I literally pick things off Google. But hotspots are hot for a reason, and these were some of my favourites for Tokyo and Kyoto!

3. The 'Hidden Gem' Question

If this is your first trip to Japan, you don't need hidden gems (unless they're food-specific). The major sightseeing attractions are popular for a reason and will be more than enough unless you're literally here for months.
Secondly, and more importantly, I've realized that 'hidden gems' are pretty personal to an individual's tastes. For example, I revealed a few of my hidden gem shrines and temples a few months ago, and immediately got immediately told that it's not actually very great. Well yeah, but that's why it was a hidden gem for me, because I loved it. We will not know what a 'hidden gem' means for you unless you specify the type. Are we looking for hidden gems that are about food? Temples? Specific anime references?
I can promise you that 99% of places worth going to are already spread across social media, and they're popular for good reasons. I personally don't think it's worth travelling far or trying spend so much time and effort looking for that 1%, especially on a first trip.
Lastly, I personally do not reveal my hidden gems unless I know you in person or it's a small business that may appreciate more support. While you may disagree, I think overtourism/overcrowding is pretty real in Japan right now, and I'm hesitant to put smaller places up on public platforms.
With that being said though, for tourists who have already been to Japan and want 'hidden gems' beyond Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka, I highly recommend the Kyushu/Chugoku region trip that I did back in January. I don't have specific itinerary 'hidden gems' but I definitely have 'hidden prefectures' that I loved (and even preferred) to Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka! (They're not actually hidden, just less visited compared to the trifecta).
Full itinerary/trip report here.
My itinerary for these prefectures are nothing special and none of them are 'hidden gems' as they're literally the most popular attractions for each place. But a. I think this proves that the 'top search' on Google is perfectly fine (because that's what I did, and I had an amazing time), and b. the popular attractions are very much worth going to.
There is a special promotion for foreign tourists that lets you take the bus to and from Shimane to Hiroshima for only 1000 yen, and the bus is only around 3 hrs from Izumo to Hiroshima! You can either start in Kyoto and move down, or start in Hiroshima and move up. I did all in 6 days which I do NOT recommend because I had to rush / clocked 30k+ steps in every day / thought I was going to die by the last day / was in a new prefecture every day.
  1. Kyoto → Osaka → Kobe → Himeji → Okayama → Izumo → Hiroshima
  2. Hiroshima → Izumo → Okayama → Himeji → Kobe → Osaka → Kyoto
Other prefectures nearby that are worth checking out are Nara and Mie.

Thanks for reading!

If you made it to the end, thanks for reading and I hope this was helpful. I definitely don't know everything about Japan and tons of people have amazing tips (that I still learn from every day). This was hopefully to help address some of the more common issues / repeated questions that people had. The TLDR is really just that we need specifics on who YOU are for us to answer your questions better, especially if you're looking for 'hidden gems' that are specific to your interests.
Have an amazing trip, everyone!

2024.05.21 02:43 Ur_Anemone Will people finally start taking female sexual predators seriously?

Will people finally start taking female sexual predators seriously?
If Rebecca Joynes had been male, no-one would have felt a “shred of sympathy”. Such was the contention of the prosecutor in the case of a teacher convicted on Friday of having sex with two male pupils. Joynes, 30, groomed both schoolboys from the age of 15, a jury at Manchester Crown Court heard.
Making the case against her, barrister Joe Allman sought to illuminate how differently society tends to view female teacher predators compared to their male counterparts. Had Rebecca been “Robert” instead, and the complainants girls not boys, the response would surely not have been the same, the prosecutor argued.
This thought experiment was more than a courtroom flourish. There is evidence to support the idea that society does indeed view female teachers who prey on male school pupils in an alternative light to how male teachers preying on girls are seen.
In a 2019 academic article, entitled Sexual Abuse by Educators, researchers suggested institutions may be less likely to grasp the potential for female teachers to abuse. “That over one-third of the male teachers [in a sample of 40 perpetrators] had received prior warnings due to their behaviour towards students but none of the female teachers had, was a notable finding potentially indicating a ‘gender blindness’ to inappropriate behaviour by women,” wrote Dr Andrea Darling from Durham University and Dr Larissa S Christensen from Australia’s University of the Sunshine Coast.
Yet the statistics make clear that the phenomenon of female teachers who abuse male pupils is both real and serious. In a 2014 study of abuse by teachers in south-eastern US states between 2007 and 2011, more than a quarter (26 per cent) of perpetrators were female – complicating the popular idea of the “pervy teacher” as a man.
“Contrary to earlier beliefs and prior depictions of romanticism in the media, females can inflict persistent psychological and physical impacts on victims,” wrote Darling and Christensen.
In the case of Joynes, senior prosecutor Jane Wilson was unflinching in her characterisation of what had occurred. “Rebecca Joynes is a sexual predator,” she said. “[She] was entrusted with the responsibility of teaching and safeguarding children. She abused her position to groom and ultimately sexually exploit schoolboys. Her behaviour has had a lasting impact on them.”
Joynes, from Salford, had been on bail for sexual activity with the first boy when she began having sex with the second boy, by whom she would become pregnant. After going through a messy break-up, she had been “flattered” by the teenagers’ attention, the court heard.
Jurors heard how she groomed one of them by taking him to the Trafford Centre and buying him a £345 Gucci belt before having sex with him in her flat.
She was convicted of six sexual offences against the two pupils. Two of these offences were carried out when she was in a position of trust. “Joynes decided to abuse her position,” said Detective Constable Beth Alexander of Greater Manchester Police’s child protection investigation unit, again making clear the seriousness of the offending.
Yet the cultural approach to such abuse of power by female teachers has tended towards the humorous nudge-and-a-wink response. In 2015, a Saturday Night Live sketch called Teacher Trial was criticised for making light of the idea of a female teacher raping her teenage male student. The fictional student (played in the American comedy show by Pete Davidson) refers to the attack as “the best day of my life”.
It’s hard to imagine a similar sketch with reversed gender roles making it onto the airwaves. But the attitudes it spoke to weren’t without some basis. When a former “Miss Kentucky”, Ramsey BethAnn Bearse, was sentenced to prison in 2020 after admitting exchanging sexual photos with a teenage student while working as a teacher, some of the responses to the story on USA Today’s Facebook page were telling. “What a lucky kid” wrote one reader.” “Best teacher of all time,” said another. A third correctly pointed out that “the comments… would be totally different if it was a male teacher and female student.”
The more gleeful responses to liaisons between female teachers and male pupils seem informed by the idea of schoolboy fantasy fulfilled. Less so by the idea that this constitutes actual abuse.
Old pop songs, such as Rod Stewart’s Maggie May (about a teen “used” by an older woman), have arguably helped romanticise inappropriate relationships between schoolboys and women. While the words “paedophile teacher” do appear in headlines about female perpetrators, the notion of a lascivious but essentially harmless Mrs Robinson figure endures.
This is despite findings that “the characteristics, motivations and modus operandi [are] broadly similar across the genders” when it comes to teachers who abuse pupils.
Analysis by Darling and others has indicated female perpetrators are “neither inexperienced naïve teachers nor fit the stereotype of females coerced by men to offend against young children”; that their motivations to abuse were to meet emotional needs, and for sexual gratification where these needs were not being met in other adult relationships.
Female teachers who abuse their charges do appear to differ in some ways from male equivalents. The 2014 American study found female teachers were more likely to commit offences against older students (aged 13 or over) than male teachers (who were more likely to abuse students aged 12 or under). A 2015 study of cases in Ontario, Canada, found female teachers were on average younger than offending male teachers (32 compared to 37 years old).
Darling and Christensen’s study of 20 women and 20 men who had sexually abused students while working as teachers in England between 2006 and 2016 found that while male teachers were more likely to engage in more severe abuse, female perpetrators were more likely to continue the abuse after it had been discovered.
“The importance of recognising the potential for female perpetration of such abuse in the same way as male perpetration has been identified,” the researchers argued. So why is a blind eye more likely to be turned to the former?
“Professionals who sexually abuse the children with whom they work will often say that their employers and colleagues were easy to manipulate as they generally trust that people who chose to work with children had their best interest at heart,” says Dr Joe Sullivan, a forensic psychologist. “This is particularly the case for female teachers, social workers and childcare workers who sexually exploit and abuse children.”
These are not irrational assumptions. The overwhelming majority of people prosecuted for sexual offences in general are men, and the overwhelming majority of survivors of sexual violence are girls and women. According to the charity Rape Crisis England & Wales, 91 per cent of those prosecuted for sexual offences are male over-18s. The Crime Survey for England and Wales ending March 2022 found the victim was female in 86 per cent of sexual offences.
But other data paints a more complex picture. Although the vast majority of paedophiles continued to be men, the number of female paedophiles almost doubled between 2015 and 2019, according to figures obtained under Freedom of Information laws by Radio 4’s File on 4 programme.
Campaigners attributed the increase to victims having more confidence to come forward.
“Most people have a hard time coming to terms with the fact that some women want to and do sexually harm children, and this societal denial is understood and exploited by female perpetrators,” says Sullivan, who has worked with police officers and educationalists to provide insights into the motivations and behaviours of child sex offenders. “Female teachers who target adolescent boys will often minimise and justify their intentions and actions by telling themselves that the child is nearly old enough to give consent. If a child responds to the teacher’s sexualisation of the relationship with curiosity or interest they will use this to further legitimise their conduct to themselves.”
Most professionals who work with children are not routinely given training about how sexual abusers behave, he says. “Hence, they do not generally know what to look for and consequently shy away from calling out unusual or concerning behaviour.”
Police and charities have warned that female-perpetrated abuse of boys remains a taboo subject, with victims suffering an extra stigma in such cases. It is thought this can inhibit some victims from coming forward. It could also lead to an underestimation of cases.
The conviction of Joynes – which follows the jailing of a number of other female school staff for sexual activity with pupils in recent years – may signal that things are changing.
Darling and Christensen have called for further discussion of female teachers abusing pupils, “to prevent such gender blindness and make victims of female-perpetrated sexual abuse more comfortable disclosing the abuse to a trusted adult.”
Sullivan, too, sees a need for greater understanding and education. He warns: “People who are seeking to sexualise their relationships with children thrive in organisations where staff are ill-informed.”

2024.05.21 01:03 Americanboi824 BROS is Going to go Orbital

Hello fellow WSB enjoyers, I interrupt your usual programming to write this about a hidden gem stonk from the Beaver State: Dutch Bros (BROS).
Dutch Bros is an Oregon-based company where they set up these little huts and sell both coffee and sugary drinks that Americans are addicted to. There is very little real estate needed, no bathroom, and you best believe the products have a high markup.
Despite expanding rapidly (literally opening 45 stores in like 14 states) Dutch Bros had positive income last quarter, and everything from same-store sales to revenue is way up YoY. This is impressive, as opening new stores in new places could potentially raise revenue while lowering same-store sales because of the legwork it takes to advertise a new brand, but they are managing to profit, increase same-store sales, and enter new markets all at once.
Reading the bear case I found a few points people are making against investing in Dutch Bros. Here's why they're all wrong.
Ability to continue expanding: Dutch Bros has plans to open 4000 more stores in the coming years, and they have 800+ open today. I think that this is not only reasonable but they could honestly open even more stores long term. I'm from Oregon, and not only does my little town of 10k have a Dutch Bros but where I currently live, Eugene Oregon, has 12 stores in a city of 200k. We have Starbucks (though one of them was just vandalized) as well as small coffee shops, but Dutch Bros still manages to operate 12 stores in a 200k city that mostly consists of broke college kids. I highly doubt they will be able to operate at the same stores per capita in most other areas, but even managing a fraction of this would allow them to open thousands more.
Branding: The article I read raised questions about the moat (or ability to prevent opponents from entering the industry) as well as their ability to raise the brand's profile. While I am a WSV regard and not an expert I think that Dutch Bros is in a position to easily create a strong brand. Not only is Dutch Bros seen as a cool young person brand, they already have a number of aesthetic designs that they sell on products. I couldn't find any on the official store website (wtf guys you're dropping the ball here), but my friend used to work at Dutch Bros and would come over with everything from coffee mugs to shirts (a quick google search will show you some). I am a soft drink fiend and so I haven't been to Dutch Bros in a while, but I'l pretty sure you can buy these in stores.
The Dutch Bros Logo is straight up good-looking, their drinks have lots of pretty colors, and their drive through is an efficient and cost effective model. Dutch Bros is already a brand with a cult-following in the PNW, and there's no reason this won't be the case across the country.
I'll end with two more bullish points:
The first is that people are boycotting Starbucks because for Palestine. To be blunt this probably isn't going to stop because it's unclear how Starbucks is really helping Israel in the first place. An article I found from the University of Texas said Starbucks revenues decreased 20k and the other coffee shop had a 25k increase because of this, and if this happens across the country Dutch Bros will get more business, not to mention the loyal customers they may get when the people who start going to Dutch Bros keep going there by force of habit.
The second is that Dutch Bros has a lot of markets it can expand into. https://www.dutchbros.com/locations- This won't load for me right now but when I looked at it a couple of days ago I saw that DB is still absent from a lot of huge markets. The fact that they can operate without these markets and are still making a profit and rapidly increasing their revenue means that as they start moving into LA and the NorthEast states they'll have room to grow. \
TLDR: Dutch Bros could be for coffee what Nike is for sports apparel. They are expanding rapidly and making money while doing so.
This is not investment advice, invest at your own risk.
Positions: 125 shares though I sold a covered call before earnings. I'm planning to add to my position as time goes on.

2024.05.21 00:46 HotWarm1 I'm considering leaving the country as I believe the culture itself is making everyone obese and sick (Revised Post)

Now before I start, I just want to point out that at one point I was obese. I was addicted to junk foods, and ate them for literally every meal. It changed when I moved in with my Dad who cooks very traditional foods, and actually cares about weight management due to our ancestry.
Now its really sad to me, because it's so benign, but I seriously do think the cards are stacked against the average American since birth with our food culture.
I've read that obesity drives up healthcare costs by 29% . That's an extreme number. I seriously think that it's an impediment to getting a universal Healthcare system going. On the same note, Americans take 75% of the drugs in the world, yet are 5% of the world's population. I want to have kids in the future, and if I stay here I'll do my best to keep them away from this, but this being the standard and being raised on a Midwest diet, I'm honestly kind of hurt over it.
This, coupled with the addiction rates, having a couple of very close family members get addicted to a drug that starts with the letter H and flooded my former town, I just am upset and ashamed at the culture we are creating. They are making it very difficult to even point these things out.
This post was previously removed due to being America centric so I would like to compare and contrast to a country i have considered moving to, Italy. So the Italians dont always eat 100% clean. They eat a lot of meats, a lot of sausages and yes, olive oil. They eat pizza and drink wine. Not the greatest foods. They do however, cook everything from scratch. Pasta sauce. Dough. Pretty much everything. They CARE about their food. In America, we have a lot of preservatives (sugar, salt) to keep food on the shelf for many many months and to sell a product. A jar of prego is loaded with added sugar. An Italian would get upset (lol) over seeing this, considering most sauces are only made with a little sugar. Not just the sugar though, different pesticides, Red40, everything that Americans give to their kids. This greatly alters our pallete and makes something as simple as white rice taste almost bitter(personal experience). Even some people only drink soda and say that water tastes bad. Not saying people should roll their own spaghetti, but American food culture is entirely unhealthy and normalized. Italy has a higher life expectancy, yet is poorer than the U.S. . It has a lower obesity rate due to the food (and some walking) . However as the saying goes, you cannot outrun a bad diet.
I'm not sure. I might be ranting, but I'd like to discuss this as I feel as though this forum you can actually compare and contrast nations with a real analysis. What are your thoughts?

2024.05.21 00:33 bleffent New Encampment Email

“Dear Drexel Colleagues and Students,
I am writing to update you on both the University's institutional response to the unauthorized pro-Palestinian encampment on Korman Quad, and on plans for returning the University City campus to normal operations.
Here is where matters stand. After conferring with Chief Singleton and his Drexel Public Safety team, I have determined that we have sufficient security in place to begin a phased return to normal operations. Tomorrow, labs, studio classes and simulation classes will return to being in-person, while lecture classes will remain virtual. Students should confirm with their faculty member if they have any questions. We also will continue virtual operations for all nonessential personnel through tomorrow. Anyone with questions about working remotely should contact their supervisor. Faculty and professional staff for labs and studios will be considered essential, while researchers engaged in critical activity that requires in-person work will be allowed access to campus with approval from their dean or division head.
Now to the matter of the encampment itself. Drexel University safeguards free speech and recognizes the right to peaceful protest, even when such protest features the expression of views that many members of our community might consider objectionable. At the same time, the University has the right both to impose restrictions on any demonstration that disrupts normal operations or creates a threatening, unsafe environment for other members of our community, and to take action against illegal trespassing.
While reportedly peaceful and respectful of passersby for long stretches of time, this demonstration already has proved extensively disruptive to normal operations. It has forced the cancellation of numerous campus events and placed added strain on our Drexel Public Safety officers, who have been redeployed both to ensure the safety of protesters and passersby and to prevent unauthorized entry into our buildings and facilities. It also compelled us to move to remote learning and operations today.
Worse, it has become increasingly clear that encampment protesters have created a hostile, confrontational environment by subjecting passersby to antisemitic speech and by issuing several "demands" that have unacceptably targeted individual members of our faculty and professional staff, a member of our Real Estate Advisory Committee, and two Jewish campus organizations (Hillel and Chabad).
As we begin returning to in-person activities tomorrow, I want to remind members of the community to report any intrusions by demonstrators into labs, studios, and other learning and event spaces by calling the Drexel Public Safety Emergency Center at 215.895.2222 or dialing 911, or contacting Public Safety via the Guardian app.
And I repeat: This encampment cannot be allowed to remain in place. I call on protesters to disband the encampment on their own immediately. In any event it is paramount that the encampment is removed so that every member of our community is free to move safely across the campus without threat of intimidation or harassment.
In authorizing all necessary steps to clear the encampment safely, I have not lost sight of the need to bridge the deep division within our community over the war in Gaza. This protest already has elicited intense emotional reactions from our community and beyond. Some have registered their strong support for the protestors and condemned the University's response as heavy-handed. Others are upset with us for not removing the encampment right away.
As a community of scholars and problem solvers, we must create spaces to listen to one another and learn from one another. So I look forward to the day after the encampment has been removed when we all can come together to utilize our teaching, research, and civic work toward making a real contribution toward fostering civil discourse and mutual understanding within our community.
Sincerely,
John Fry President”

2024.05.21 00:29 mghow_genius I found a short story on facebook that I wanted to share

The Tragic Life of Wilbur

The man they just won’t leave alone

Wilbur

Wilbur grew up with his parents, traveling salesmen, who never stayed in one place. Although Wilbur preferred to have a stable home, his parents would always blow off his suggestions.
“You already have a home. If you don’t like these accommodations, study hard and find a well-paying job when you grow up. If you can get there, I promise you, that you can buy a house and then live your life, however you want,” his mother would suggest.
“Listen to her. Your mommy knows the best,” his father would add.
Now, a Business Development Manager and a wiz when it came to numbers, he worked at a small startup company. Although the company made big profits from Wilbur’s ideas, it never really acknowledged his genius. He was proud of himself and his work, nevertheless. He took his parents’ advice and worked hard to get where he was. So, why won’t he be?
He got off work and was heading home when four masked men surrounded him. Before he realized anything, one of them held a gun at his temple, while the three others rummaged through his pockets. They pulled out his wallet, phone, and wristwatch, before punching him in the face. As Wilbur fell on all fours, bleeding out of his nose, the four men began kicking him from all directions, knocking the wind out of him.
“I didn’t resist. They took everything. Why are they still beating me?” were the last thoughts that went through his head.
He woke up in a hospital bed. The nurse who came to change the catheter bag was surprised and called the Doctor. Once the doctor came in and checked his vitals, he smiled at Wilbur.
“You are a lucky man,” he said. “You were in a coma for two months. We almost lost all hope. But you are awake now and your vitals are fine. You are stable. I think you will make a full recovery.”
And recover he did. After two more weeks in the hospital, he finally came out of the hospital. He thanked the Lord for bringing him back to the world of the living.
“Mother always said that I could get the life I wanted if I worked hard. It must be her blessings that brought me back again. Because I did work hard.” Wilbur smiled as his thoughts gave him inspiration and his parent’s memories evoked nostalgia.
Once he reached his apartment building, he checked his mailbox and found a letter for himself, along with some overdue bills. He put the bills in his pocket and opened the letter first since it was from his company. He froze after he read a few lines.
He had been let go for going AWOL for almost 3 months. The letter did hint that the office was aware of his predicament, but they just couldn’t “afford to keep him on a payroll with their tight budget” – the corporate version of “it’s not you, it’s me”.
With a heavy heart and the memories of his mother’s blessings, he took a deep breath and headed upstairs. Once he reached his apartment and tried to open the door, the key didn’t fit. Did they change the lock while he was away?
He went to the Landlord and knocked on the door. As soon as the landlord opened the door and saw him, his expression turned sour.
“Mr. Hanson. The key to my apartment isn’t working,” Wilbur said.
“I’m sorry to hear what had happened to you, Wilbur. You are a good man. You didn’t deserve it.” Hanson tried to change his sour expression to a sad one with obvious fakeness.
“Thank you, Mr. Hanson. About my- ”
“Yes. Unfortunately, the market has been horrible lately, with all the mugging in the area. Although the mugger gang has been arrested, the fallout remains. People just don’t want to rent these apartments anymore. So, I just couldn’t ignore it when I did find that couple willing to move into that apartment.”
“You gave my apartment to someone else?” Wilbur exclaimed.
“That’s my apartment, in case you forgot,” Hanson snapped, suddenly reverting to his true feelings. “I had the locks changed. You didn’t have much in the way of belongings, since the furniture in there are all mine. You can pick up your bag of clothes and laptop from the apartment manager.”
Wilbur just stood there, with his face in his hands. His whole life was crumbling down.
“Besides, you still owe me two months’ rent,” said Hanson quickly, finding a tinge of sympathy within him. “I will forgo that if you want.”
“I don’t have anywhere else to go.”
Hanson’s eyes lit up as he saw an opening. “Well, I can make another arrangement for you, if you like.”
“That’d be great.” Wilbur’s eyes lit up with hope.
“I have an acquaintance. He owns a three-bedroom house downtown and lives alone. I convinced the association to let him keep that rundown house,” Hanson said.
“He will allow me to stay with him?” Wilbur asked, unsure of where this is going.
“Yes, yes. He’s a bleeding heart. Besides, I have some understanding with him. I am sure that he will let you stay, even rent-free.”
“Rent-free?” Wilbur couldn’t believe his ears. It sounded too good to be true.
“Of course. But you have to do me a favor in return.” Hanson leaned in closer, “Don’t ever try to rent a house in this area again. Live there, with my friend Gere.”
“Why?” Wilbur asked with genuine curiosity.
“There have always been muggings around these parts. But what happened to you was the last straw that made the prices of real estate go down around these parts. It’d be good to not have your face around to remind people of that… tragedy.”
“I understand,” Wilbur said.
“And one more thing,” Hanson added. “You will still owe me my two months’ rent and all the bills. With interest, of course.”
“Of course, Mr. Hanson,” Wilbur said with a smile. “After what you are doing for me, I would love to continue our relationship.”

Gere

Gere came home and threw his bag on the sofa before heading to the kitchen. He had to prepare a meal for his guest as well; the regular mac-and-cheese won’t do. Hanson’s phone call on short notice left him little time to prepare.
As he prepared some mashed potatoes, chili, and beans, he still wondered how he got roped into taking a roommate by a man whom he barely knew. Since Hanson was an important member of the realtor’s association, he just could not refuse the request. After all, it was Hanson’s influence that allowed him to keep his family home from being demolished by the realtors.
In retrospect, it might have been a good deal for Gere to cave in and sell the house to the realtors for demolition, but he just couldn’t do it. His grandfather, and subsequently, his father lived at this place. He had a lot of emotions attached to this place.
Ding Dong!
Gere wiped his hands on his aprons and turned off the stove that he had just lit up. He hurried to the door and opened it. There stood Wilbur, broken and tired with two large bags at his feet. Upon seeing this man, Gere’s heart melted. The scars on his body and the mismatched outfit spoke volumes about this man’s plight.
“Wilbur. Come on in.” Gere picked up his bags for him. Wilbur didn’t even have the energy to refuse the aid.
“Mr. Hanson told me what happened to you. It’s a tragedy. Really,” Gere said, leading Wilbur to his room. “Don’t you worry about anything here. You can stay here as long as you like, till you get back on your feet.”
“That’s awfully kind of you,” Wilbur said. “I’m really sorry to impose.”
“Not at all,” Gere replied. “You aren’t imposing. If anyone, it was Mr. Hanson who imposed. But honestly, if I am to keep this house, I need him to keep the Realtors on a leash. We have a mutual understanding.”
Gere put down the bags in the room and turned to Wilbur.
“He imposed, but I agreed. Not because of him, because of what happened to you. I just could not leave you out like that, man.” Gere gave him a pat on the upper arm and beckoned, “Come on. Wash up and come to eat. Dinner’s almost ready.”
Wilbur smiled at this generous man, genuinely thankful for his assistance. He was starving – hospital food leaves much to be desired and it was already late.

Cousins

Wilbur and Gere sat on the sofa, staring at the TV, but not focused on what was going on on-screen.
“So, these cousins of yours. They are not involved with anything bad, right?” Gere asked.
“Not at all, Gere. You know me. They are practically family.” Wilbur rubbed his eyebrows.
“What’s up with all these muggings?” Gere asked with severe annoyance.
“They had arrested the gang, last I heard. Yet, here we are. My cousins are scared to go out in that neighborhood and have requested if they could stay over, just for a couple of days.”
“Yeah. Of course. Your family is my family. You know that, right?”
“Thanks Gere. You are a saint.”
“Meh! Don’t worry. It’s not like I am using those rooms anyway.” Gere took a pause. “How’s your job search going?”
“Same old, same old. The job market isn’t really that good right now.”
“But it’s been four months already,” Gere said with genuine concern. “Now you are scaring me. What if I lose my job? In this market, I don’t think I can get another anytime soon.”
“Hey, man. Just be grateful that you still have your job. I don’t know what I will do. The exorbitant interest rates Mr. Hanson is imposing on me have been piling up. Now I must pay 3 months’ rent. Without a job, I can’t even repay one.”
“Don’t worry too much.” Gere rubbed Wilbur’s head. “Just bring your cousins in, enjoy some quality time with your fam.”
“Will do. How’s your Karate lessons going?” Wilbur asked.
“Got my Brown belt. Can’t skip classes when my office is paying for a hobby,” Gere said with a smile. “Much better than the gym membership they offered me.”

Mugging

Gere walked out of the bank, cashing his paycheck. Payday was always on the 7th of the month and he eagerly waited for this day, every month. He preferred to use cash since he would often have to lend some to his roommates - if one could call them that.
Gere walked down the pavement, counting the cash again. Distracted, he almost bumped into someone around the corner.
“Hey! Wilbur. What are you doing out here, man?” Gere asked with a tired smile.
“Gere, buddy. I need some money, very urgently,” Wilbur said.
“Well… sure. But you could have waited till I got home.”
Wilbur just snatched the wad of cash from his hands.
“Hey!”
“Thanks, man. I owe you one. I just need to pay Mr. Hanson back, before he increases the interest.”
Gere grabbed him by the arm and stopped him from leaving. “That’s not cool, bro. Give it back. We still have to budget for the whole month.”
“Let go of me,” Wilbur said, glaring at him.
“What’s gotten into- ” Gere was knocked in the head from behind, before he could finish his sentence.
As he drifted into unconsciousness, he remembered seeing Wilbur walk away with one of his cousins and his hard-earned money.

Interloper

Gere opened his door with the keys and froze at the sight. Wilbur and his cousins were sitting on the sofa, drinking beer and eating pizza while watching a game.
“You attacked me!” Gere exclaimed, seeing their audacity. “Give me my money and get out of my house.”
Wilbur put down his beer and shrugged, “Or what?”
“You caught me off-guard back then,” Gere growled. “Or what? Or else, I will make you.”
All four of them stood up and spread their arms. “Make me, then, fool. In case you haven’t noticed, you are outnumbered.”
Before Gere could say anything, one of the cousins rushed forth and threw a punch at him. Gere parried the blow with his forearm, moving in closer to hit him in the solar plexus with his knee. Regardless of how confident Gere was or his aptitude in fighting, Wilbur did have the number advantage.
Before Gere could even turn towards the other assailants, Wilbur and his cousins just grabbed him haphazardly from all directions and pinned him down to the ground. Wilbur turned to one of his cousins, once they secured Gere down.
“Call 911.”
“911?” Gere shouted. “Yeah. That’s a mighty fine idea. Bring out the boys in uniform.”

Bail

Gere sat in his cell with his head in his hands. He might have gotten a bit too excited and failed to explain the entire situation to the cops. In retrospect, even he would have considered himself a threat if he were in the cop’s shoes.
There was a bang on the cell door. “Come on out. Your bail has been posted.”
Gere came out to see Phyllis, his lawyer, waiting to pick him up.
“Good to see me?” Phyllis asked.
“You have no idea,” Gere said, rubbing the bump on his head that he suffered when the Wilburs pinned him to the ground.
“You are in big trouble, Gere,” Phyllis reminded, handing him his belongings.
They walked out of the station, got into Phyllis’ car, and finally had the chance to talk. Gere explained everything to Phyllis.
“I see. I will be honest, Gere: things are looking bad for you,” Phyllis blurted in a matter-of-fact way.
“What? How so? They were in my house, with my money. You could just present them as intruders.”
“Intruders? Too many witnesses will admit that you let them stay with you for five months now. That won’t stick.” Phyllis increased the fan speed of the AC while driving.
“What? What about my money? They attacked me and stole it.” Gere felt his voice rising, yet again, just like it happened back with the police.
“You didn’t see the attacker, did you? You said you were attacked from behind.”
“But I saw them walk away.”
“Half unconscious and still without proof that they did it. Circumstantial at best.”
“But they attacked me at my house as well,” Gere yelled.
“When the cops came, the big guy had a bleeding nose and a severe bruise on his abdomen. They have the proof that you attacked them. You don’t. Now it’s their words against yours. And in court, four is better than one.” Phyllis turned the car and continued.
“Besides, that’s not your house either.”
“What do you mean that’s not my house?” Gere asked in genuine confusion.
“They got some documents from the realtor’s association. They are claiming that the house was due to be demolished due to some new regulations they had set up. Some Hanson drew up the papers.”
“Who is he to sign the deeds to my house?” Gere shouted in frustration.
“The head of The Realtor’s Association. Your house is halting the development of the area that the realtors are planning. Even the mayor approved it. But don’t worry. This is one thing we can bring to the court. All your neighbors are willing to testify your legitimacy as the owner as well as give character affirmation. I think there’s hope. Finger’s crossed.”

Evicted

Gere stood at his own doorstep, staring murder at Wilbur, smiling at him. Phyllis stood at a safe distance, not ready to get into a physical altercation, should one begin.
“Here’s your phone and your laptop, Gere,” Wilbur said, handing him the things.
With his judgment clouded by anger and confusion, he just took them from his hand.
“What’s the meaning of this?” Gere demanded.
“I am offering you your phone and laptop. It’s a good deal. Take it and leave. You are being evicted from House Wilbur.”
Gere walked up to Phyllis and handed her his possessions. Before Phyllis or Wilbur could realize what was going on, Gere turned around to land a mighty side-kick into Wilbur’s face.

Court

“Will you please tell the court what happened on October 7th?” the prosecutor inquired.
“I got mugged on my way home from the bank.”
“And you claim that Mr. Wilbur had mugged you, right?”
“Yes,” Gere replied.
“Did you see the attacker?”
“Yes.”
“Where did the attacker hit you?”
“On the back of my head.”
“Then how could you have seen him? Do you have eyes on the back of your head, Mr. Gere?”
The entire courtroom laughed. The judge silenced them with his gavel.
“I saw them leave before going unconscious.”
“So, you took this circumstantial evidence as a reason to go home and attack them? You weren’t even in your right mind, half unconscious.”
“I didn’t attack them. They attacked me first.”
“Your honor, let these four testimonies and Exhibit. B, photos of the injuries on Mr. Wilbur’s cousin’s body show that Mr. Gere was the first to attack.”
“Yes, that’s because they punched me and I blocked it, before fighting back!” Gere begged.
“So, you admit to attacking them.”
“Objection. Leading the witness.” Phyllis stood up.
“Sustained,” the Judge allowed.
“Regardless. There is no doubt about the attacks, given the evidence.”
“It was self-defense!” Gere shouted.
“Of course it was. Mr. Wilbur and his cousins have the right to defend themselves,” the prosecutor said with a wink.
“They came into my house and attacked me! How can they be defending themselves?” Gere asked.
“House Wilbur isn’t your house, Mr. Gere. We have documents to prove that.”
“Nonsense! All my neighbors have testified that I have been living there for generations!”
“If your neighbors love you so much and if you are such a great guy, according to them, why aren’t they taking you into their home? Why are you just spending your days harassing Mr. Wilbur? Is it not true that you have assaulted him multiple times after that and violated your restraining order?”
Gere remained silent.
“Let this be known, Milord, that Mr. Gere has even dug a tunnel under the boundary wall to sneak in and attack Mr. Wilbur. Luckily, his karate lessons being paid for by his company, could not help him against four grown men with the law on their side.”
“They mugged me and invaded my home!” Gere shouted.
“Are you denying that Mr. Wilbur has been mugged and subjected to terrible torture a few months back?”
“What? No. How is this relevant?” Gere asked.
“And even his cousins were mugged, which forced them to escape to your house.”
“My house.”
“Pardon me, your honor. I misspoke. It’s just a slip of the tongue. My client, Mr. Wilbur, wants nothing but to make peace with Mr. Gere. In fact, he has offered Mr. Gere his phone and laptop to broker peace.”
“They took my house! What am I going to do with a Laptop and a Phone? I want my house back!”
The judge shouted, “Order, Order.”
“Milord. Mr. Wilbur has a lineage dating back to the Native Americans. According to this Genealogy and this DNA report, he is one part Native American and thirty-one parts German. That means, his ancestors, the native Americans, were the original owners of all the lands around here. That makes him the rightful owner of that house today. Furthermore, Mr. Wilbur’s mother has promised him a home should he work hard. And we all know how much hardships he went through. He got mugged and hospitalized. Mr. Gere is denying that he and his cousins got mugged.”
The masses in the court and jury just nodded in agreement. Upon seeing this reaction, the Prosecutor raised his voice to present his closing statement.
“Mr. Wilbur is an innocent man, who just can’t catch a break. The muggers, you, and your neighbors; no one is just ready to leave Mr. Wilbur alone. His mother has promised him a home and you are denying him that. His ancestors were from here and you are denying him that.”
The judge turned to look Gere in the eyes, unblinking. The whole court remained silent for a few seconds before the Judge made his verdict.
“Should Mr. Wilbur want to press more charges against you, all of them will be added to your sentence. You, Mr. Gere, are a terrorist. And I condemn you to prison for life, without food, water, or electricity.”
