2024.05.14 17:58 throw-it-all-away-ok Who is entitled to female rage?

BIG ol’ disclaimer: Not a Swiftie.
I’ve been seeing a ton of discussion about this whole female rage: the musical bit and whether or not TS has earned her “right” to female rage, and for the most part I feel like the convo is missing the point. The true issue at hand is so much larger than just ‘famous lady shouldn’t be angry’.
Taylor has a right to rage. To be a woman is to rage. It is also to perform.
I came across this quote lately by John Berger and it had me thinking:
”Men act and women appear. Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at. This determines not only most relations between men and women but also the relation of women to themselves. The surveyor of woman in herself is male: the surveyed is female. Thus she turns herself into an object of vision: a sight.”
This is to say that women cannot escape the male influence. Even a woman who is ‘counter culture’ to the male gaze is perpetuating some form of male fantasy; there is nothing a woman can do to escape this perception- we are forever compared to it, and forever comparing each other.
This is the universal experience of women, and it does not improve with higher status or wealth or fame.
That being said, there is a HUGE problem with capitalizing on and commodifying female rage in a way that is “palatable” and sanitized. Femininity the way we think of it is already performance, so to take an element that is so real, so raw for all women and turn it into something performative and superficial is extremely damaging to the validity of the concept as a whole.
Furthermore, romanticizing female rage/ anguish because it comes from an attractive cis white woman is and has been a problem for generations and is further exacerbated by Swift. Why is it that white women suffering is romanticized in the media and POC suffering results in violence and death? There is a bias towards who is allowed to rage, and who isn’t. Taylor should be using her platform to uplift women who rarely get a voice to speak on this issue, but who are statistically impacted the most.
Taylor looks at female rage with zero nuance, and zero understanding of her subject material. Frankly, she comes at it from the perspective of a man.
She knows that female rage exists, she experiences it in her own way, but she has either not unpacked those ideas or she is too afraid to confront them socially for fear of being polarizing.
Maybe she is afraid of herself.

2024.05.14 17:56 DANJCOLEMAN1991 Sound Like ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Pt.1: Masafumi Gotoh (2024 version)

Introduction

ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION, Zepp Tokyo for \"Quarter-Century Tour\"
^(\This article is an updated version of my "Sound Like" article from 2021. I have reposted this article due to difficulties editing the original version*, and have included additional information and recommendations based on the increased popularity of amp simulator pedals*)*
Hello fellow musicians and Ajikan fans!
I have been a fan of ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION for roughly 16 years and as a guitarist was greatly inspired by the band's alt rock sound.
After a few years of research I have written a series of "sound like" articles for ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION. The purpose of these articles is to provide context on how the band create their signature sound, and to support beginning musicians or tribute acts who may wish to replicate it.
At the end of each article I have drafted a Budget Rig, which you could use for both at home and in a live environment. I have also provided some general amp settings to tweak and try, which are based on the band's live sound and be can used to help replicate their tones.
This is a 3-part series and if you enjoy this article I would recommend checking out the other articles:
ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Sound Like Part 2: Kita : AsianKungFuGeneration (reddit.com)
ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Sound Like Part 3: Yamada : AsianKungFuGeneration (reddit.com)
Please note that the article focuses on the band's live sound, which will be different to the albums and can vary depending on the venue. Also (and is a cliché every musician and instrument will vary slightly due to small differences in play style and build, so also be mindful of that.)
To help you recognise the individual guitar tones, Gotch's guitar parts are normally panned to the left earphone and Kita's are panned to the right earphone on the band's albums. (On 2016's Sol-Fa, Hometown and some of the Planet Folks singles the panning was swapped, with Gotch instead in the right ear and Kita on the left)

Masafumi Gotoh

Gotch live at the 02 Islington, London, 2013
Let's start off with lead singer and rhythm guitarist Masafumi Gotoh, or "Gotch" for short. Gotch's was massively influenced by the 90's alternative rock, Power Pop and the Britpop scene, and has previously highlighted Oasis, Weezer and Number Girl as key inspirations.
As Ajikan's main songwriter, Gotch follows the principle of "less is more" - keeping the arrangements simple for listeners, but combining pop hooks & traditional Asian melodies with the band's punk rock and indie influences.
Gotch's playing style follows this principle, as he primarily uses chord shapes, bar chords or repeated phrases to anchor the band. (The simple approach also makes it easier for Gotch to sing while performing)
Occasionally, Gotch will use "octave chords" (more on octave chords below) or play riffs with open strings notes, to add further depth. A good example of this is the opening riffs to Easter, where he plays an open D string while also playing the 3rd and 5th fret of the A string.
Octave Chords: Octave chords is famously used in punk rock and alt rock riffs, and is when you play the same note in two different octaves. Try play a bar chord on the 4th fret of the A string, and lifting your ring finger off the D string. You should get a "C# octave chord" and will recognise it from the intro of Haruka Kanata. Octave chords are used in many Ajikan songs and by many bands, so they are good to practice!
In more recent albums, Gotch has also experimented with moving chord shapes across the fretboard. For good examples, check out the opening of Caterpillar or the bridge section of Kouya Wo Aruke.
Gotch's guitar tends to be lower in the overall mix, with Kita acting as the band's lead guitarist and Gotch as the anchor for each song. However, Gotch tends to improvise with ambient sounds during live performances and occasionally will take on the lead role in songs like Hold Me Tight.

GUITARS:

When it comes to guitars Gotch almost exclusively plays Gibson Les Paul Jr's with P-90 pickups, and has been his preferred guitar since 2004. The P-90 pickups have a bright midrange sound in comparison to the muddier humbucker sound, which makes them better suited for Gotch's focus on chords.
Gotch main guitar is the 1959 Gibson Les Paul Special
The Les Paul Jr is also lighter and have less sustain and power compared to a normal Les Paul, which leaves space for the other instruments to stand out in the mix.
Gotch's main guitar is a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Special, which he plays in E Standard tuning and uses for both recording and live performances. Gotch also uses a 1961 Gibson Les Paul Jr (with the pickguard missing) or a 2000 Gibson Les Paul DC (with a gloss yellow finish) for songs in Eb/D# tuning, such as After Dark or Soredewa, Mata Ashita.
Gotch's is also famous for using a 1975 Gibson Marauder during the band's early years. Gotch has mostly retired the guitar (due to the "lack of volume" for larger venues), but it regularly appears in MV's, band merchandise and occasionally during special events, such as the 10th anniversary shows in Yokohama.
Gotch's Gibson Marauder
Gotch occasionally uses a few rarer guitars live, such as the Gibson Custom Les Paul Junior John Lennon model (Gotch has number 54 of 300 such guitars made), and is normally played with a capo for songs such as Maigo Inu To Ame No Beat.
Gotch has also used a Gibson Hummingbird for acoustic numbers, and can be seen used in Eizo Sakushin Shu Vol.6 for the band's performance of Kaigan Doori. Gotch likes to use Tortex Flex .88mm & Tortex Flex Triangle .88mm guitar picks, which he swaps between depending on the song.
If you are looking to sound like Gotch, the best place to start would be a Les Paul Jr guitar with P-90 pickups.

AMPLIFIERS:

After originally touring with a Roland JC-22, Gotch has almost exclusively played Fender amplifiers since 2004. Gotch uses two amps when playing live, one for his "clean" sound and the other for his "heavy" sound.
The band's often implement a "quiet/loud" dynamic into their song writing, so Gotch will often switch between his amps during live performances, using a custom made footswitch on his pedalboard. (A good example of this is Mustang or Solanin)
For his clean tone, Gotch uses a Fender 65' Twin Custom Twin 15. It can be heard on Korogaru Iwa, Kimi ni Asa Ga Furu, Solanin and Wonder Future. Occasionally, Gotch will combine the Twin Reverb with a boost pedal or overdrive pedal for more clarity, with Wonder Future a good examples of this.
(1) Fender '65 Twin Custom 15 (clean tone), (2) Fender Vibro-King Custom, (3) Fender Super-Sonic 60 Head (which uses the Vibro-King as a speaker), (4) Fender '63 Spring Reverb (which runs in between the pedal board and the Super-Sonic 60, and is toggled on or off by a switch)
For his heavier tone, Gotch primarily uses a Fender Vibro-King Custom for recording and appears in most of the band's MV's. The Vibro-King/Twin Reverb was Gotch's main setup during the 2000's and can be seen together on Eizo Sakushin Shu Vol. 6.
In 2009 Gotch started to use a Fender Super-Sonic 60 Amp Head and still uses it now. Until 2022, Gotch would use Vibro-King as a "cabinet", acting as the speaker unit for the Super-Sonic. Gotch now uses a Shinos & L Rocket Head for live shows, but has kept the Vibro-king for recording sessions and MVs.
Since 2022 Gotch has used Shinos & L Rocket amp & cabinet instead of the Fender Vibro-King
Gotch "heavy" amps for songs such as Re:Re:, Haruka Kanata and Rewrite. It is important to note that Gotch prefers to use his amps to create his distorted tone, but will occasionally add an overdrive pedal for heavier tracks such as Blood Circulator & Easter.
Alongside the Twin Reverb and Super-Sonic, Gotch is known to use a Fender 63' Spring Reverb Unit. This unit only runs into the Super-Sonic and is used for additional reverb to "thicken the sound". Gotch can control the 63' Reverb with a on/off switch on his pedal board.
Other notable amps that Gotch has used are the Matchless C30 & Bad Cat 30R Head. Both have been used exclusively for recording, most notably on Wonder Future. Gotch is also known to use VOX AC15 amps for recording.
Gotch's '63 Spring Reverb Unit, along with a selection of Vortex Flex .88m picks
In terms of mics, Gotch seems to use a Shure SM57 for his Fender Twin Reverb and a Shure SM58 on his Vibro-King or Shinos Rocket. When you are trying to emulate his sound with modelling or profiling amps, it is worth experimenting with mic positioning and different mics.
If you want to replicate Gotch's amp sound then you should look to replicate his Fender amps. However the Vibro-King is a key component and are unfortunately rare, notoriously loud and expensive. For that reason, I have put together some alternatives that should get you close.

PEDALS & EFFECTS:

During Ajikan's early years, Gotch combined a Roland JC-22 with a ProCo RAT to create the "quiet/loud" dynamic of the band's early records. After buying the Fender Vibro-King in 2004, Gotch no longer required the RAT, but kept a simplified pedalboard to achieve certain tones for live performances.
Gotch's 2004 pedalboard, which includes the ProCo RAT and Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer
We will cover two different pedalboards that Gotch has used during the band's career. Regardless of which pedal board you look at, Gotch's has always included an overdrive or boost pedal, a phase pedal and a delay pedal.
The boost/overdrive is used to "lift" his clean sound during ballads (Solanin, Wonder Future) or to thicken his sound for heavier tracks. (Senseless, Dororo) Gotch will normally set the drive or gain low and the volume high.
The phaser is a more sparingly used pedal to add texture and colour, but can be heard on Shinkokyū, Blue Train and Rewrite. I will include more detail on Gotch's use of delay in the sections below.
Gotch's "Classic" Pedalboard
Gotch \"classic\" pedalboard, used between 2006-2013, with Gotch's custom made footswitch on the bottom left to control the amps
Gotch started to use this "classic" board during the Fanclub tour and continued to do so until the 10th Anniversary shows in 2013. This would be the easier and more affordable board to replicate for newcomers.
Gotch's setup started with a BOSS TU-3 tuner, which he also used as a "mute" pedal in between songs. From there, his chain would run into the Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer, the BOSS PH-2 Super Phaser and the BOSS DD-20 Giga Delay. During the Magic Disk tour, Gotch also added a Custom Audio Tremolo.
The BOSS DD-20 has been Gotch's main delay pedal for twenty years and is set to "warp". On the warp setting, Gotch can keep his foot on the pedal to create swells of delays. Gotch's standard setting is 173-179bpm (beats per minute on 1/4 (quarter) notes and then he has four presets. These are 137bpm on 1/4 (for the intro of Blackout), 154bpm on 1/4 (for Kakato de Ai o Uchinarase), 177bpm on 1/2 (for Solanin and the intro of Siren) and finally 177 on 1/4. (For the second half of Siren))
Gotch also included two footswitches for his board; The first one was a handmade footswitch, which he used to swap between the Twin Reverb and the Vibro-King/Super-Sonic. The other footswitch was a BOSS FS-5L, which he used to control the '63 Spring Reverb Unit.
Gotch's "Modern" Pedalboard
Gotch's \"modern\" pedal board.【Pedal List】(1) api/TranZformer GT (compressoequalizer) (2) BOSS/TU-3 (tuner) (3) Spaceman Effects/Atlas III (preamp) (4) BOSS/DD-6 (delay) (5) Spaceman Effects/Voyager I (tremolo) (6) EarthQuaker Devices/Avalanche Run (delay/reverb) (7) Mu-Tron/Mu-FX Phasor 2X (phaser) (8) Caroline Guitar Company/KILOBYTE (9) BOSS/DD-20 (delay) (10) Handmade/Line Selector (11) FAT/514.D (booster)(12) strymon/Zuma R300 (power supply) (13)BOSS/EV-30 (Expression Pedal) (14) BOSS/FS-5L (foot switch)
During the recording of Wonder Future and his first solo album (Can't Be Forever Young), Gotch began to experiment more with boutique pedals, and has resulted in a more complex board since 2014, allowing more ambient experiments on the band's records and during live performances.
Gotch has added a API Tranzformer GT to the start of his chain, only using the E.Q. section and tweaking the settings for each venue.
Gotch's "Modern" board now includes a variety of delay and reverb pedals, such as the Earthquaker Device Avalanche Run and the Caroline Kilobyte Lo-Fi Delay. These are combined with his DD-20 to create the ambient sounds heard on Empathy & the outro of Demachiyanagi Parallel Universe.
The BOSS DD-6 Digital Delay is set to the "reverse" mode and is used during the intro of Re:Re: and the bridge of Rewrite. Gotch has removed the Tube-Screamer from his board and has experimented with multiple alternative pedals, which includes the Xotic Effects AC Plus and JHS Superbolt.
He currently uses the Atlas III Preamp Booster and the FAT 514.D for his overdrive sounds. The 514.D only runs to the Super-Sonic to help "thicken" the distorted tone of the Super-Sonic.
Gotch has also replaced the Super Phaser with the MU-FX Phasor 2x and is using a Voyager I Spaceman for his tremolo. (UCLA & No Name are good references for the tremolo) Finally, Gotch has added an BOSS EV-30 expression pedal, which he uses to control the delay of the Avalanche Run.
If you are looking to replicate Gotch's pedalboard, the best place to start would be a phaser, delay and a boost/overdrive pedal, which would cover most of Ajikan's Discography.

Sound Like Gotch...On a Budget

Now that you are up to speed on what Gotch uses for his guitar rig, we can start to look at replicating his sound. The idea of this section is to offer affordable suggestions to replicate Gotch's tone that can be used for home use and for small live venues.
I would like to highlight that I am just writing as a fan and the equipment I recommend are purely my own recommendations. I do not have any sponsors (I wish I did sometimes) and if you find alternatives that work for you, go for it!
Gotch performing in 2022, during the Quarter Century shows in Yokohama
To buy Gotch's current pedal board alone would cost roughly £2,500 and would be unrealistic for most readers to purchase, however there are options that can get us close to Gotch's tone without breaking the bank.
The key elements to this rig are:
Let's start with the guitar, which is both important for the P-90 tone. You should always feel comfortable when playing the guitar you pick, so I recommend trying out the guitar when possible before buying.
GUITARS
As an affordable guitar, I would suggest looking at the Epiphone Les Paul Jr. It is the entry level price for Gibson guitars (Epiphone would be the equivalent to "Squier" for Fender) and includes P-90 pickups as the standard setup. You can buy one for around £380 and should also be fairly easy to modify & similar to Gotch's sound.
Epiphone Les Paul Junior
If you do have a higher budget to work with, I would recommend the Gibson Les Paul Special Tribute DC. These were released in 2019 and you can normally find a 2nd hand version for roughly £650 - £800. (It is also the guitar I currently use!) Failing that, you can also look at the Gibson Les Paul Special for around £800.
Gibson Les Paul Special Tribute DC
AMPLIFIERS
We are looking to replicate Gotch's Fender amps, so the affordable option to start with would be the Fender Mustang GTX. The newer Mustang amps are an improvement on the original and have simulations of the Twin Reverb, the Vibro-King and the Super-Sonic.
The GTX 50 (which has a smaller speaker) is roughly £390 and the GTX 100 (which includes a footswitch) is about £510, but you should be able to find both versions for a reduced cost second hand.
Fender Mustang GTX 100
If you do have a higher budget or prefer to use a tube amp, I would recommend going for the Fender Super-Sonic Combo or the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe for a solid distorted Fender tone.
Alternatively, you could consider the Fender Blues Junior, Fender Tone Master Twin-Reverb or Roland JC, and combine them with a ProCo RAT to replicate the tones from Houkai Amplifier and Kimi Tsunagi Five M.
PEDALS
To keep the list of suggestions short and simple, we will use Gotch's "classic" board as a reference and will cover most of the band's discography.
For a budget rig, I would recommend the Ibanez Tube-Screamer Mini, which is a miniature version of the standard Ibanez Tube-Screamer and sound great for the price. You could pair this up with a Boss Phase Shifter and a BOSS DD-6 Delay for around £309 brand new to get a very similar Gotch board. (You could buy them for as low as £110 combined on the 2nd hand market)
The Tube Screamer Mini is a cheap, effective overdrive pedal based on the classic TS808
For a more expensive pedalboard, the JHS Superbolt V2 was used by Gotch extensively between 2015-2019 and was once described by Gotch as "the Ajikan sound" on his blog. You could also buy the TS808 Tube Screamer that Gotch actually used for many years or the JHS Bonsai 9 which emulates multiple tube screamers.
For modulation sounds (phase, tremolo) the AmpliTube X-Vibe is one of many great multi-effect pedal on the market. If you have the money for it, you could buy a BOSS DD-20 second hand or the BOSS DD-200 to emulate Gotch's delay sound.
If you decided to go with the Mustang GTX, you would also have a selection of effects built into the amp.
THE TONE MASTER PRO? (and amp simulators)
As a final recommendation, Fender have recently released the Tone Master Pro (TMP), which is a multi effects and amp simulator.
It can be used as a device for home recording, but also as multi effects pedal in front of a standard amp or as your main amplifier when played through a IR cabinet. (I'll go into more detail in a bit!) The TMP are not cheap at £1400, so I would only advise buying one if you plan to use it as your main amp and effects board.
If you have the budget and was starting your rig from scratch I would consider checking it out, as it includes great simulations of the Twin Reverb and Vibro-King. They are also easy to transport & the Fender IR cabinets only weigh 12.5kg. (For comparison, my VOX AC15 weighs 30kg and is a nightmare to transport for shows)
The TMP is Fender's first amp simulator pedal and from what I understand the Quad Cortex DSP, the Line 6 Helix series and the Headrush Pedalboard are more popular choices. However, for the purpose of "sounding like Gotch", I would start with the TMP for its Fender selection and simplicity
The Fender Tone Master Pro can be used to simulate multiple amps & as a pedalboard for live performances
If you decide to buy a Amp Simulator Pedal, there are 3 common ways to use it for band practices & live settings. (Outside of just using headphones or running straight to front of house at a venue)
Option 1: Only use the effects on the Amp Simulator and run it into a standard amp. (Make sure to not use the cabinets settings within the pedal when doing this You could still use the amps, however it will not always sound great with a normal amp)
Option 2: Use the Amp Simulator as your main amp and combining with a standard guitar cabinet. In order to do this, you will need to buy a separate power amp pedal to run in between the amp simulator and the guitar cabinet. (Otherwise you will not have any volume or oomph when you play through the cabinet)
Option 3: Buy a IR Cabinet. The difference between this and Option 2 is that you would not need to buy a separate power amp pedal to run into the speaker. The Fender FR-10/12 & Line 6 Powercab are good examples.

Recommended Amp Settings

The following amp settings are based on photos gathered from live performances or from photos of Gotch's social media. Every amp will slightly differ based on your guitar or playing style, so you may need to tweak with your settings to find the right blend.
My personal advice is to not put the gain too high and to start with getting the treble and bass settings where you feel comfortable, before tweaking the mids. The P-90s have a strong midrange attack, so bear that in mind as well.
Gotch's Vibro-King and Super-Sonic
Fender '65 Twin Custom 15:

Channel 2: Vintage setting ON, Gain 1: 4, Gain 2: 0, Treble: 5-5.5, Bass: 4.5-5, Mid: 5.5, Vol: 5.5-6
Fender Vibro-King Custom (as cabinet):
Plug into the speaker input at the back of the amp, with FAT switch on.
Fender Vibro-King Custom (as amplifier):
(FAT ON) Vol: 3, Treble: 4.5, Bass: 4, Mid: 5.5 (Based on Eizo Sakushin Shu Vol.6 settings)
OR
(FAT ON) Vol: 4.5 Treble: 4 Bass: 5 Mid: 4.5
Shinos & L Rocket Head:
Gain: 7, Treble: 8, Bass: 3, Reverb: 0, Master: 7

Conclusion

I hope this has been helpful for you guys, as it has been on my bucket list for some time! Please provide some feedback as it is always appreciated and if you would like more details about the effect settings let me know.

2024.05.14 17:48 Cultural_South_6702 Should Equipment be overclocked?

WARNING: This could change or ruin the game if these overclocks aren't done correctly. If they change the utility too much it could alter the role of the class.
FIX: Equipment overclocks have separate missions to unlock them so the loot pool isn't too big
I'll be giving 1 overclock idea for each utility (Please comment if these wouldn't work)
IDEAS: Driller
Reinforced Power Drills - (Unstable) Throws your body in a straight line that destroys terrain but you have to charge it to control how much you want to destroy: +Mining -Less Accurate -Uses more fuel
Satchel Charge - (Balanced) When grenade explodes does less damage but splits into fragments that do extra damage: +Damage -Harder to attack single enemies -Projectiles are random
Engineer
Platform Gun - (Unbalanced) Shoots out goo that hardens and can be climbed on: +More accurate -Less surface area +Can block caves easily
LMG Gun Platform - (Unbalanced) Turrets become mobile and can move (Pinging enemies or objectives makes turrets focus on that area): +Mobility -Damage (30% less)
Gunner
Zipline Launcher - (Clean) Buffs Damage and Reduces incoming damage by 25% while on it
Shield Generator - (unbalanced) Enemies can go inside of the shield and so can you but enemies receive 70 dps while inside the shield and they slow down: +Damage -No protection (20% damage reduction)
Scout
Grappling Hook - Instead of zipping straight to a location you swing like Spiderman and can go up or down: -Harder to go to a direct location + Can make a lot of speed if timed right faster reload
Flare Gun - Less area but if shot near enemies it can stun and blind them: -Less area +More stun

2024.05.14 17:45 Turbulent_Object_558 The top FF ever produced is likely FFXV

I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but I found it incredibly compelling. I will explain but there will be some spoilers.
The plot:
The first impression you get is the idea that this will simply be a Lion King type plot - Prince Charming and his royal guard are temporarily deposed; but will shortly amass a new army to reclaim his rightful place.
But no. There is no happy ending to be had here. Allies die, the royal guard gets battered, Noct gets beaten, and the world falls into darkness. The only thing Noct gets to do is end the suffering after years of desolation and then die in the process.
Instead of teaching about the opulence of royalty, it teaches the burden of inherent responsibility. For generations his lineage has had incredible fortune and power, but that privilege came it a price to justify it’s existence.
The boss fights and hunts:
The fights are incredibly well thought out and routinely necessitate varied strategies. It’s not enough to just have one build and comfortably sail through most challenges - you actually need vary how you approach most battles. You are never bored. Whether it’s a massive slumbering turtle or a time traveling terminator robot, you will find yourself engaged, and the loot will be worth it.
The dungeons:
This is where FFXV really shines. The dungeons are truly spectacular masterpieces that reflect an ancient world with a rich lore that existed long before the current troubles. It’s as if first thinking that humanity is 8000 years old, then later discovering artifacts proving that it’s actually 300,000 years old. Not just old but rich with lore.
There is no better dungeon in all of gaming than The Pitioss Ruins.
My life falls into two eras. BPE (Before Pitioss Era) and AP(After Pitioss). FF15 is not just the best FF game ever, it might even be the greatest ever.

2024.05.14 17:45 sabudum I have this game idea and I need some feedback.

It's more a genre idea, which I call "Emergent Sim". Imagine if every time you played Deus Ex, it had different environments, different characters, different tech, weapons, and even mechanics. The idea is to create a game where the entirety of it's world is simulated, from how the world came to it's current state, to each and every NPC's background, appearance and personality. Now, I've done enough experiments to know that this is actually possible.
I already programmed systems that simulate world generation, city generation, buildings, interiors, characters, the rest is trivial.
What I need to know is: Would you play a game where every single time you played it, it had a different plot, with different characters, different items with different specs? A game where every action you took had an impact on how the world evolves and changes. This kind of game mechanic would be similar to playing a tabletop RPG, it would create an emergent gameplay, hence the name "Emergent Sim"
Obviously, this kind of game would be very niche, but I believe that with time, more and more people would get into it, since it is completely unpredictable in every way.
Now, I don't want to hear any opinions on how this can be achieved technically, or how believable the game's universe is, all that stuff is already taken care of.
I wanna hear your opinions on the actual concept as a game.
Thank you very much for your time.

2024.05.14 17:40 PhantomPR3D4T0R What’s a reasonable temperature expectation when listing says no AC? [CAN]

Here is my situation and would like some second opinions before contacting the host.
I am about 10 days into a 40 day long stay in an upper floor apartment for school not travel. The listing said no AC, which I assumed would be no big deal because it’s May and the lows for the night where I am located would be 0-12 degrees C, with highs from 10-20C (maybe 25 near the end of the stay) during the day. Why would I need AC right??
First week or so I am here, it got below freezing at night, was very cloudy and rainy. I did not have any issue with the temperature, it stayed below 20 inside. However last few days I have woken up to it being sunny and my apartment being 25C and about 70% RH. Now here’s the kicker, it reached a low of 5C outside and at 8AM was 10C and I slept the entire night with the window open as much as it would open and a 6” fan (that I brought myself) blowing outside air into the room all night!! I have to close the window when I leave for school due to connected balconies and being in the hood, so when I get home at 430 is usually closer to 27C. I open the window trying to blow like 15C air into the room and it only is able to offset the heat generated by the shower, oven and fridge I am using. So the room temp doesn’t drop much until 8pm, then it is able to crawl down to about 22C by 1030 and does not go much lower. Only for it to start heating back up at 5am I am terrified this place will be actually hostile to my health if the temperatures get any hotter outside…. I theorize the reasons it can get so hot are a combination of:
-piss poor ventilation to my room through a central system (heat through is a manual radiant system fyi. It is most certainly off in my room and not playing a factor)
-being on the 6th floor to a poorly planned old building that probably used to be office space
-knee to ceiling windows across the whole apartment that face east with blinds that are very bad at stopping convection air flow at the tops and bottom
-very old inefficient fridge and stove that put out a lot of heat with no room dividing walls in the suite.
As for how the humidity gets so high, I have absolutely no idea. I think the tiny ventilation duct (there is only 1) is bringing hot humid air from the rest of the apartment building. I am on floor 6 out of 7. I am somewhat conflicted because I am aware the room said no AC when I booked. But I also believe it’s reasonable expectation that no AC means your apartment will be at most 1 maybe 2C hotter than the outside ambient air temp. And differences of up to 15C and 40% humidity is completely insane. Last few days have been barely tolerable and if my apartment temps continue to increase with the forecasted outside temperatures I would like the host to either issue a full refund so I can stay somewhere else or deliver a 10 000 BTU stand alone AC unit. Is that unreasonable?
Thanks for the help

2024.05.14 17:36 High-Plains-Grifter GPT-4o really struggles with simple script and code questions

Is anyone else finding that ChatGPT cannot hell performing simple but annoying tasks that it used to breeze through?
Annoying string manipulation and things like that where you know you can get an answer but it's a pain - 4o is completely floundering! It used to be a good time-saver for these.
I have tried several scenarios, asking for C#, T-SQL and Python scripts to do things like removing trailing commas while concatenating lists, generating comma separated values and so on and it has no idea. It kept posting completely nonsensical T-SQL for example.
Is it really getting better and this is a blip, or what?

2024.05.14 17:34 kieranjackwilson Got a new job and my old laptop just isn't keeping up! Please help me stay employed ($1400-$1800)

I am looking to build my first PC and feeling lost every time I see some "Razorknife GPXU 2930 drive coil 2.0" being compared to a "Razorknife GPXU 2930 drive coil 2.0 II". I am pretty savvy with a computer once it's not parts, but I would appreciate some patient help in getting started on this endeavor.
My budget is between $1400-$1800 but I would like that budget ideally to include any additional costs such as peripherals, shipping, or whatever computer glue I will need.
My main needs ordered by importance are:
  1. Adobe Suite- I will be editing short, but quality, videos between 2-10 minutes long in Premier Pro, large RAW images in Lightroom, designing graphics with >30 layers in Photoshop, and working extremely huge and extremely tiny SVGs in Illustrator. I have never worked in After Effects or Substance because my laptop sucks, but I may check them out if I can.
  2. AI- As AI becomes more commonplace, and efficient, I want to make sure that I am able to make use of its capabilities. I often find myself using it to generate textures or troubleshoot code. I'm not sure what technical burden this puts on hardware, if any, but I figure it was worth mentioning.
  3. App Development- At some point I would like to work on developing a few ideas I have. The apps themselves would be fairly simple mobile applications, but this is more of aa hobby than anything.
  4. Gaming- This is my lowest priority, but I do play some popular games (Apex, Rocket League, Helldivers, Rust, etc.). I'm not a gamer though; I don't stream or use mods, and am not interested in 420 fps. I have a PS5, so it isn't a dealbreaker, but if a few extra $$$ would make me never buy a console again, it's worth it.
Some things that I don't know if they matter but I will say them anyways are:
Thank you for the help!

2024.05.14 17:32 alphariusomega123 I'm so sick of people's stupid nerfs to Superman that's why I'm making this post (long post).

I'm so sick of people's stupid nerfs to Superman that's why I'm making this post (long post).
Were Kryptonians only planet busters in the Post Crisis?
Short answer absolutely not, long answer: let's explain this false belief.
This post arises because, among other things, in several blogs and YouTube channels and tik tokThis is a very common myth. It is often mistakenly believed that Superman is a hero who is only limited to protecting the Earth and who moves on planetary scales, but the truth is that in the more than 80 years of the character's history, he has traveled to all kinds of places both within their own universe as well as outside it, and even outside their multiverse. The same can be applied to his cousin Kara.
Without going any further, since the beginning of the 90s, DC's own writers have declared that Superman's adventures move on a cosmic scale, putting at risk not only the fate of the world, but often that of the galaxy or even the universe. So the idea of Superman as someone limited to saving Metropolis and little else is wrong., it is stated that in DC's post-crisis continuity, Superman and the rest of the Kryptonians who escape from him only possess a destructive power that reaches planetary (or multi planetary) at its maximum.
which is absolutely false and we'll see because, although this publication will be focused for the moment on the post-crisis, I will also make one for the new 52 that is also nerfed horribly.
Without further ado let's get started.
1) "SUPERMAN TENDS TO MOVE AT PLANETARY SCALES":
This is a very common myth.
So the idea of Superman as someone limited to saving Metropolis and little else is wrong.
https://imgur.com/a/8t9bwdj
2) "KRYPTONIANS HAVE A DIFFICULT DESTROYING PLANETS":
If there is one thing that has been consistent throughout the Post Crisis period, it is how Kryptonians like Superman or Supergirl can achieve planet-level feats quite casually. Let's review some examples:
  • In just his first year as a superhero, Superman took down a monster with the strength of a planet in one fell swoop.
https://imgur.com/a/Q84cIqS
-According to Batman at the end of the Emperor Joker arc, Superman could juggle planets if he wanted to.
https://imgur.com/a/NDLoiZC
  • A Kryptonian teenager who has absorbed a modicum of yellow sunlight can easily tear a planet in two in a tantrum, according to Superman.
https://imgur.com/a/sjk1FAE
  • Even after being without sunlight for an extended period, Superman is still capable of destroying a planet with a mere leap.
https://imgur.com/a/KsXhMXT
  • Superman destroyed multiple stars in the Galactic Golem dimension without problems and also withstood the explosion of the dimension that housed them.
https://imgur.com/a/N5VxIzF
  • Both Supergirl and Superman emerged unscathed from the Kryptonite explosion on New Krypton, and the former was at the epicenter of the planet's explosion.
https://imgur.com/a/vVuxFPn
-Superman dragged the weight of the Earth, the Moon and a spaceship and it has also been said that he could move the Earth if he wanted to.
https://imgur.com/a/YxIUAa7
https://imgur.com/a/cBdlBp0
  • It was also said that Superman is among the beings capable of moving a planet with one hand
https://imgur.com/a/4tvlIff
...among other examples. So it is illogical to think that his limit is there.
3) "SUPERMAN NEEDED HELP TO MOVE THE EARTH AND THE MOON":
Not really. This happened on three occasions, and all three have a context behind them:
  • The first occurred in JLA #75. In this, the sorceress Gamemnae had previously killed the entire Justice League, reducing them to mere ghosts/skeletons that were not even a mere shadow of her original power. After this, Gamemnae would release all the water she had accumulated into space, altering the Earth's orbit, so the League would have to keep the planet in its orbit (and not move it, as people think). Even after being resurrected, the League was in a deplorable state, with Superman having to stop to absorb solar energy and even then he was not at his full power.
https://imgur.com/a/PQmQZa6
https://imgur.com/a/0XQsICz
https://imgur.com/a/5eEnSWH
  • The second took place in Justice League of America #29. Here Superman and Green Lantern are not moving the Earth (again), but fighting to keep it in its orbit (again) against the powerful gravitational pulse of Starbreaker, who was dragging it towards the Sun. Starbreaker is so powerful that it can drag entire galactic clusters with that same pulse and it was also becoming more and more powerful thanks to the negative emotions of the planet. And if this were not enough, Starbreaker had previously weakened Superman with red sun energy.
https://imgur.com/a/Uwr58Ig
https://imgur.com/a/77Mirm9
https://imgur.com/a/mgGFkJe
https://imgur.com/a/3UKvISM
  • The third and last was in JLA #58. The League had to do an extremely complicated maneuver with the Moon, dragging it as quickly as possible into the Earth's atmosphere to bring oxygen to the Moon and fill it with fire (all at high speeds), removing it at the last second. Not just move it. So it stands to reason that they would want as many hands on the task as possible. They were also quite injured and tired and subsequently suffered even more blows from the White Martians.
https://imgur.com/a/7hZ06Fh
https://imgur.com/a/cEY374Q
https://imgur.com/a/R8zvdVo
As we can see, the evidence normally used to claim that Superman needs help moving celestial bodies is not such, and even one of them, far from being a demerit, is in fact a remarkable feat against someone very powerful.
4) "BRAINIAC CLAIMED AT THE END OF OWAW THAT SUPERMAN DID NOT HAVE THE POWER TO MOVE A PLANET":
This is heavily taken out of context. What Brainiac-13 claimed was that Superman did not have the power to move HIS planet away from him, referring to the War World, which Brainiac had taken control of. This distinction is not mere semantics, since Brainiac-13 has just absorbed the universal energies of Imperiex with which he wanted to cause a new Big Bang that would destroy the current universe and replace it with another. These energies were going to allow Brainiac-13 to remodel the entire universe to his whim.
https://imgur.com/a/SBbc4lI
https://imgur.com/a/CgW145M
https://imgur.com/a/S6QhtCF
That Superman needed to overload himself with solar energy to face such an enemy is not strange if we take this into account. So managing to move the War World against Brainiac's will is a very high-level feat for Superman, not a demerit. Let's remember that Superman could not destroy the War World, because if he did this he would automatically activate Imperiex's Big Bang and destroy the universe.
https://imgur.com/a/uplJ0rD
https://imgur.com/a/uplJ0rD
5) "SUPERMAN WAS KNOWN BY A PLANETARY ATTACK AND A MOON EXPLOSION":
Once again we find two extremely decontextualized situations. Let's analyze them:
  • The first occurred in Superman/Batman #4. In this instance, we see how Hawkman supposedly knocks out Superman after hitting him with the claw of Horus, which extracted his power from the Earth's magnetic core. Said claw was a magical weapon, as Hawkman himself implies when asking Superman if he thinks he and Batman believe they invented castling.
https://imgur.com/a/maES4Y9
And Superman is vulnerable to magic, as we all know and as mentioned in the same instance, which makes this attack that much more devastating. But also in the next instance we discover that Superman and Batman allowed themselves to be captured to take them to Luthor, making Hawkman and Captain Marvel believe that they had defeated them. Which disproves that Superman was actually knocked out by Horus' claw.
https://imgur.com/a/hIs6WU6
https://imgur.com/a/E4cNnap
  • The second occurred in Justice League of America #30. Here, an 81-trillion-ton shadowy moon was approaching the solar system at 7,614,000 km/h, which would trigger a mass extinction event whether the moon impacted or not; so they needed to pulverize it, not simply destroy it. To accomplish this, Superman punches the moon with a fist of infinite mass, accelerating as close to the speed of light as possible with the intention of gathering enough mass to destroy the moon completely without causing danger to Earth.
https://imgur.com/a/UoT1tYs
https://imgur.com/a/fw4IedY
I don't know Superman's weight, but according to the DC wiki he weighs 107 kg (they don't cite sources). Accelerating at 0.99 c, that's 5.86x1019 Joules. The figure Batman gives for the moon's mass is incorrect, but assuming he's right, that would be 1.8x1026 Joules. Multiplying both energies, the result is an explosion of 1.06x1046 Joules or solar system. But if we use the real mass of the moon, it generated 1.43x1032 Joules, which multiplied by Superman's energy gives a result of 8.3x1051 Joules, well into the solar system+.

So this is indeed another feat that far exceeds the planet level. It is also interesting to mention that the substance of the creator of said moon (Shadow Thief) is an apparently infinite dimension and that with that same power, Starbreaker was able to fight and defeat Dharma, who kept two universes together.

https://imgur.com/a/lkuv9cX
6) FREQUENT REFUTATIONS TO SUPERIOR EXPLOITS:
Faced with the constant exposure of feats above the planet level (like the ones here), a series of preeminent refutations usually arise to try to disprove them, often dishonestly distorting the context of the original scene to give it a completely different meaning. These are the most common:
6.1) "The Nebula Man is not a living universe, because his size is not that of one"
A: Just because Neh-Buh-Loh is human-sized on the outside does not negate that it is a universe on the inside. In the same scan already shown from Seven Soldiers: Frankenstein, it is said that he is a sentient and mobile mass of malleable super-matter, indicating that his universe is scalable to his size; and in fact, in JLA: Classified (same story in which he confronts Superman), we are also shown its nature as a sentient universe and the Justice League traveling inside it (from which they come and go through boom tubes). ).
https://imgur.com/a/qFpZ23a
https://imgur.com/a/GYDphjd
https://imgur.com/a/wXWHUcS
In fact, in the aforementioned Seven Soldiers, it is revealed to us that if it were not for the Ultramarine Corps, Neh-Buh-Loh would have already grown to replace the current universe. This is therefore the same case as the Galactic Golem, which on the outside barely measured several meters, but on the inside it was a vast dimension with many planets and stars.
https://imgur.com/a/Qflwyo5
https://imgur.com/a/7wB5Zys
https://imgur.com/a/CJSPuN0
6.2) "Absorbing energy to vaporize half a galaxy does not count as resistance, it is a hax"
A: It's not just about the act of absorbing energy. In the same comic it is mentioned how said energy was anti-sunlight, that is, harmful to Superman. In fact, we are clearly shown Superman being damaged by said energy and Batman and Martian Manhunter initially believed that Superman had died trying to absorb it. So it's clearly scalable to the physical attributes of it.
https://imgur.com/a/jTizZ8h
https://imgur.com/a/1XBq9Ce
https://imgur.com/a/Y9gY9SE
6.3) "Superman did not move the Mageddon, he was just trying to free himself from the chains that held him while it tortured him"
A: Martian Manhunter himself explicitly mentions that Superman was turning the wheels of Mageddon. This is later confirmed, where Martian explains how Superman is now one of the components of the machine and is using his strength. On the other hand, if Superman was just being held against his will, there would be little point in him breaking the chains so easily when Batman managed to snap him out of the trance the Mageddon kept him in.
https://imgur.com/a/6P1uXbz
https://imgur.com/a/2IRf9Ps
https://imgur.com/a/jTizZ8h
6.4) "There is no mental limiter. Superman has been defeated on previous occasions and even died against Doomsday"
A: The limiter is subconscious, not conscious. Superman can't choose when he stops using it. At least not until he completed his training with Mongul. It is important to clarify that it is mentioned that his fight against Doomsday was the only time where he was able to free himself from the limiter.
https://imgur.com/a/GeFw1SQ
https://imgur.com/a/bFYi4tb
6.5) "The universal black hole was a dream, Superman wakes up in the following pages"
A: This is half true. Sure enough, Superman wakes up from the "sleep" in the following pages. However, just before that, Death clarifies the event as something real and explains that it took place within a plane where mind and matter intersect to shape dreams and turn them into reality. Let us also remember that in DC, dreams give birth to new universes, so it matters little even if we take what happened as a literal dream.
https://imgur.com/a/1l9YagO
https://imgur.com/a/fhE2MMw
6.6) "Superman did not receive the Suneater explosion, in fact, he had to escape from it"
A: This, on the other hand, is a complete lie. Superman received the explosion, as we can see in the panel; What he had to escape from was a cloud of red solar radiation born as a result, which Jonathan mentions would have incinerated him (not killed him) if it had reached him; Well, as we all know, red sunlight weakens Superman and deprives him of his powers. In fact, Superman had previously received several bursts of red solar radiation, making this feat even more impressive.
https://imgur.com/a/Ff1c327
https://imgur.com/a/Ff1c327
https://imgur.com/a/M72EsPn
6.7) "The solar system that Superman moved was barely the size of buildings while he moved it"
A: The solar system had not yet reached the size it would have according to the scale of our universe, but that does not mean that its mass was proportional to its size. The system was adjusting to the new scale from its microscopic size, since it was originally from a compressed universe. Therefore, its mass was equal to that of a real one, evidenced by the mention that very soon the gravity of its star was going to destroy Metropolis. If he didn't have it, he wouldn't be able to generate such a gravitational field, being so small.
https://imgur.com/a/v35zZ8G
https://imgur.com/a/v35zZ8G
6.8) "In the same story, it is mentioned that his best hits barely destroy planets"
A: And where exactly is it mentioned that those were his best shots? 🤔 Because in fact, it is implied that these were casual.
https://imgur.com/a/BQ4crIz
6.9) "The Void Hound did not destroy all those star systems at once. Furthermore, it is only mentioned that those systems died"
A: Nowhere in the story is such a thing stated or even hinted at. In fact, the mention that the Void Hound was only tested once suggests that it destroyed all of those systems with a single attack. Regarding the other, the mention is accompanied with images of celestial bodies being destroyed, which makes it extremely unlikely that by "killing them" they were not referring to the fact that they were destroyed.
https://imgur.com/a/emjfscA
https://imgur.com/a/emjfscA
6.10) "Superman only covered the Mnemon fissure before it broke free, and he also had to get help from John Stewart because it was too much for him"
A: Under the pretext that covering the fissure was not a feat of strength, it makes no sense to argue that he needed John Stewart's help to keep it closed. In any case, Superman himself mentions that he was enduring "unimaginable" pressure to keep his hands closed. Regarding it being "too much for him", this was due to the visions that the Mnemon sent to Superman, with the aim of driving him crazy and making him release his grip on him.
https://imgur.com/a/Wk4YuSz
https://imgur.com/a/GA04Vi4
As for John Stewart's "help," it simply consisted of acting as a backup for Superman (in case his hands opened) and creating the construct of a magnet to generate an electromagnetic field strong enough to reduce the pressure of the Mnemon enough that Superman could safely release it and throw it into a wormhole.
https://imgur.com/a/ZwFuBAz
https://imgur.com/a/0nGPfTo
6.11) "Resisting the explosion of the La Fuente wall was an outlier, since it is a structure superior to the multiverse"
A: Superman only had to resist a tiny portion of the wall's destruction. Specifically, the one he had right in front of him. He couldn't do it all either, even if he wanted to. Since the Source Wall is a pan-dimensional structure that surrounds all of existence, the only way Superman could take all the destruction from it would be by being omnipresent throughout the multiverse. This does not mean that it is a great feat, since a mere breach is enough to destroy a universe.
https://imgur.com/a/vsBBg06
6.12) "That Orion has a power comparable to the Big Bang is hyperbole"
A: We know that it is not hyperbole because emanations of Orion have feats of a similar level, such as containing an explosion that was going to destroy the universe at a quantum level, fighting against a god that was going to destroy the universe and defeating him (along with Superman, btw), killing an emanation of Darkseid that became one with the universe, contributing the energy to destroy the universe from the anti-life equation, etc.
https://imgur.com/a/ahiiHL2
https://imgur.com/a/u0CpFm9
https://imgur.com/a/hATcdrI
https://imgur.com/a/CprsHWy
https://imgur.com/a/3R8tsvj
https://imgur.com/a/lNiMVkI
CONCLUSIONS:
As we can see based on all this, it makes no sense to believe that Kryptonians who have been absorbing sunlight from a yellow sun are only planetary (or multi-planetary) in attack power, at least as far as Superman and Supergirl are concerned. it means. The opposite has been proven in countless instances, and the evidence in all of them is that destroying planets is only a small fraction of these characters' true destructive potential. Therefore, to affirm that this is its limit or that the many feats that exceed this level are outliers is to speak without any type of foundation.

2024.05.14 17:29 Spooky_Tinsel Does anyone think you can cultivate the "I must write" mindset?

I hear a lot of authors and writing advice books saying, if you've got it, you'll know, you'll just have to write, and if you don't then you don't have what it takes.
I used to have that urge. I've always wanted to be a writer and it's only in the past few years I've really begun to believe I can do it (after developing a growth mindset, optimism, etc...). But a decade of crappy mind-numbing jobs and adult stresses seems to have left me uninspired/unmotivated to write. I just experience a sort of mental emptiness when I try. Sometimes when I wander the streets at night or go for walks in the countryside get a glimpse of ideas, but I get home and the ideas' lustre fades away almost as soon as I'm in the door.
Does everyone who writes have the feeling that they absoloutely must write? Has anyone lost that feeling and then found it again, and if so how did you rediscover or nuture it?
Edit: I don't think I'm asking about self-discipline. I can physically sit down and tap the keys. I think I'm struggling with the idea generation and recovering the passion I used to have.

2024.05.14 17:27 OwnBodybuilder5798 Chemistry Bench Not Working

I created a chemistry bench and have the generator connected to it with gas in the generator. I crafted around 500 things in the bench but now the bench stopped working. The generator is on, gas is in the generator, and the appropriate items are in the bench. Any idea how to fix this. I have spawned in additional benches and wired them only to have the same thing happen. Is there some glitch? It worked flawlessly for a couple days and now when I hover over an item I want to craft it says I have the appropriate ingredients to craft but does not give me the option to craft. I’m on ps5.

2024.05.14 17:27 Thinker_Assignment Introducing the dltHub declarative REST API Source toolkit – directly in Python!

Hey folks, I’m Adrian, co-founder and data engineer at dltHub.
My team and I are excited to share a tool we believe could transform how we all approach data pipelines:

REST API Source toolkit

The REST API Source brings a Pythonic, declarative configuration approach to pipeline creation, simplifying the process while keeping flexibility.
The Rest APIClient is the collection of helpers that powers the source and can be used as standalone, high level imperative pipeline builder. This makes your life easier without locking you into a rigid framework.
Read more about it in our blog article (colab notebook demo, docs links, workflow walkthrough inside)
About dlt:
Quick context in case you don’t know dlt – it's an open source Python library for data folks who build pipelines, that’s designed to be as intuitive as possible. It handles schema changes dynamically and scales well as your data grows.
Why is this new toolkit awesome?

We’re community driven and Open Source

We had help from several community members, from start to finish. We got prompted in this direction by a community code donation last year, and we finally wrapped it up thanks to the pull and help from two more community members.
Feedback Request: We’d like you to try it with your use cases and give us honest constructive feedback. We had some internal hackathons and already roughened out the edges, and it’s time to get broader feedback about what you like and what you are missing.
The immediate future:
Generating sources. We have been playing with the idea to algorithmically generate pipelines from OpenAPI specs and it looks good so far and we will show something in a couple of weeks. Algorithmically means AI free and accurate, so that’s neat.
But as we all know, every day someone ignores standards and reinvents yet another flat tyre in the world of software. For those cases we are looking at LLM-enhanced development, that assists a data engineer to work faster through the usual decisions taken when building a pipeline. I’m super excited for what the future holds for our field and I hope you are too.
Thank you!
Thanks for checking this out, and I can’t wait to see your thoughts and suggestions! If you want to discuss or share your work, join our Slack community.

2024.05.14 17:10 LawPrimary879 Understanding the biggest generative AI's

Hi everyone,
I just finished my bachelors in Econ with a strong focus on statistics. Since AI seems to be gettting more and more use cases, I am entertaining the idea of combining Econ with AI (meaning doing an AI masters) and then going into a PhD that is focused on using AI for economic modeling and prediction.
The question is this; in order to combine both in an academic career, a very high degree of understanding of AI seems necessary. In the AI course of Ng on coursera, I have understood the mathematical concept of neural networks, calculating parameters, reducing bias etc. Is a bigger generative AI like GPT, DALLE etc. essentially just this but with more data and more neurons or is it so much more complicated that understanding them to an academic level is impossible without a CS bachelors (and possibly masters)?
Thanks a lot for your answers <3

Stochastic Oscillator – How does it work and how to use it in trading?

What is the stochastic oscillator?

A stochastic oscillator chart allows you to identify momentum in the price of a financial asset. At the core of this indicator is the stochastic oscillator formula. What it does is compare the closing price of a security with the recent high and low prices. It then converts it to a figure between 0 and 100, which is the actual value of the stochastic oscillator.
Let's say you talk to two traders independently and ask them what the stochastic oscillator shows. You will most likely get two very different answers. On the one hand, the stochastic oscillator is an indicator of both up and down momentum. On the other hand, some traders may see it as an indicator of overbought and oversold prices. Both explanations are correct in theory. The fundamental difference lies in how you use the indicator within your investment strategy.
https://preview.redd.it/75cd3582pe0d1.png?width=623&format=png&auto=webp&s=7f594c2024beede3d8096e690387ae660095b242
There are other factors to take into account. One of them is the period during which the low price and the high price are taken. You will need to research the ideal indicator settings for your particular trading method. Are you happy to opt for a flatter long-term trend? Alternatively, would you prefer a more sensitive short-term indicator that could alert you to short-term trading opportunities?
A brief history
There is some debate about the origins of the stochastic oscillator. Especially the %D indicators which we will cover later in this article. Many believe that C. Ralph Dystant was the original creator of the indicator. However, George C. Lane is perhaps more commonly credited with playing his role in popularizing it. The latter also introduced several tweaks and adjustments.
We can trace the stochastic oscillator itself back to the 1950s, when C. Ralph Dystant taught courses on the stock market. In these courses, his original focus was on commodities. The classes were one of the first to focus on charts, moving averages, and other indicators as a means of attempting to predict future price movements. By the way, George C. Lane supposedly started working for C Ralph Dystant in 1954. That was the same year that technical “guru” Roy Larson retired. It was a coincidence?
It would be fair to say that both C. Ralph Dystant, and George C. Lane, were integral to the creation of the stochastic oscillator indicator and the influence it still has on investors today. In many ways, the key to its success is its relative simplicity. The masterstroke introduced an easy-to-understand range between zero and 100. In the words of Kelly Johnson, former principal engineer at Lockheed Skunk Works, “keep it simple, stupid.” Many traders today refer to this quote as the KISS principle, because in English it would be “keep it simple, stupid.”
How does the stochastic oscillator work?
Now let's examine how the stochastic oscillator works. We'll also see how quickly you can adjust the sensitivity of the indicator. The basic concept behind the stochastic oscillator is momentum. It gives you the ability to monitor the price momentum of an asset. Doing so allows you to see if, compared to recent highs and lows, you are potentially oversold or overbought. However, therein lies a potential conundrum.

A simple example

What if we look at the S&P 500? The E-Mini S&P 500 futures contract is among the highest volume assets in the futures market. What will its momentum show us if we look at it? Imagine the example of shooting a rocket into the sky. It will not stop suddenly and return to earth immediately after running out of fuel. The fading momentum will continue to push you higher at a drastically decreasing speed. However, when the positive momentum finally ends, the rocket will spin and head toward the earth. As a result, you gain new momentum along the way. This is the idea behind the stochastic oscillator. Using the recent highs and lows, for comparison, you should be able to identify a change in momentum. That result should also be reflected in the graphs.
There is a general consensus that when stochastic oscillator levels fall below 20, it indicates that the asset is oversold. Meanwhile, if it moves above 80, that indicates that the asset is overbought. Let's take 50 as our average value. In theory, positive momentum is above the line, while negative momentum is below it. Although this is often the case, you should be on the lookout for potential false signals. Now let's go ahead and take a look at the ways to read and understand the Stochastic Oscillator indicator.

Stochastic Oscillator Formula and Calculation

In this section, we will look at the stochastic oscillator formula. We'll also point out which elements of the formula you can adjust to change the sensitivity. The formula is the following:
C = the most recent closing price
L14 = the lowest price traded during the last 14 trading sessions
H14 = the highest price traded during the last 14 trading sessions
%K = the current value of the stochastic indicator as a percentage
To give a practical example of how the indicator works, we will look at the S&P 500 index. This is the figure on which the E-mini S&P 500 futures contracts are based.
Current level = 3490
Low point in the last 14 trading sessions = 3300
High point in the last 14 trading sessions = 3500
The calculation is as follows:
3490-3300/3500-3300 = 190/200
(190/200) x 100 = 95%

Example

So, according to the Stochastic Oscillator indicator, the S&P 500 Index has strong momentum and is in possible “overbought” territory. Many people would classify this as the standard stochastic oscillator indicator calculation based on 14 trading sessions. However, what does the situation look like based on eight trading sessions?
Current level = 3490
Low point in the last 8 trading sessions = 3400
High point in the last 8 trading sessions = 3500
3490-3400/3500-3400 = 90/100
(90/100) x 100 = 90%
Finally, what indication does the calculation with a 30-period moving average give us?
Current level = 3490
Low point in the last 30 trading sessions = 3200
High point in the last 8 trading sessions = 3500
3490-3200/3500-3200 = 290/300
(290/300) x 100 = 97%
The shorter the period in question, the more sensitive the formula will be to daily movements. The reason is that the difference between the maximum and minimum point should be relatively small, in theory.
In the three examples above, the S&P 500 index has strong momentum for 14 and 30 days. However, it is noticeably lower if you only look at it over 8 days. And, on the other hand, they all indicate a potentially overbought scenario.

How to read stochastic oscillator charts?

Next, let's take a look at two stochastic oscillator indicator charts. We will highlight some of the turning points that could have been beneficial for traders. The first chart is the traditional (fast) stochastic oscillator indicator with a smoother %D trend line based on the %K factor.
https://preview.redd.it/vzf6c7wfme0d1.png?width=1377&format=png&auto=webp&s=512182433e3783fa53bcf9fad33fbc81b5a40bef
The second chart is what we call a “slow stochastic oscillator indicator”. It averages the index level over a longer period. Then we have the %D factor, which is based on the %K and gives an even smoother line.
The longer the period over which prices are examined, including high, low and current prices, the smoother the chart will be. However, there will be a significant delay. On the plus side, in many ways, this can help offset the short-term peaks and troughs that can sometimes tempt people to buy and sell when they shouldn't.
https://preview.redd.it/b7k655aime0d1.png?width=1420&format=png&auto=webp&s=ee2a182215d415eb4e5f7b8e528b81247e601a2a

How to use the stochastic oscillator?

The key to using the stochastic oscillator is finding the time frame that best suits your investment strategy. Those looking for short-term trading will focus on relatively short periods, which can lead to somewhat volatile changes in the indicator. Those looking for confirmation of longer-term trends will extend the period in question. These graphs will be smoother and, due to the long delay, are not as susceptible to short-term changes.

What are the best and most accurate settings?

There are three variables to consider when looking at the stochastic oscillator setup, which are:
%K = based on the number of time periods used in the calculation
Slowdown = simple moving average (SMA) factor applied to %K
%D = %K moving average factor
As we mentioned earlier, the stochastic oscillator has three different types. Among them are:

The Fast Stochastic Oscillator (Traditional Indicator)

Fast %K = basic %K calculation for 14 periods
Fast %D = Fast Stochastic Oscillator Three-Period SMA %K

The slow stochastic oscillator

Slow %K = Fast %K expressed as three-period SMA
Slow %D = Slow %K three-period SMA

The Complete Stochastic Oscillator

%K full = %K fast smoothed over a period X SMA
Full %D = Full %K Period X SMA
The beauty of this system is the fact that all previous variations of the original indicator produce figures from 0 to 100. As a result, it is easy to compare and contrast the variation in the trend lines. The longer the periods in which you calculate the simple moving average, the smoother the line will be.
As we mentioned above, the simple fast stochastic oscillator will throw up many possible overbought and oversold positions. Some of them will inevitably be false signals. As you can see from the charts above, the Fast Stochastic Oscillator can be quite volatile, frequently trading above or below the 80 and 20 levels for a short period of time. On the same chart, you can see areas where the %D (SMA figure) is not as volatile and does not always fall below or move above the 80 or 20 levels like the Fast Stochastic Oscillator does.

Trading strategies with the stochastic oscillator

There are many ways you can use the stochastic oscillator indicator to open positions, close positions or even reduce your position if the chart is at a critical point.

Identifying overbought/oversold levels

As you will see in the chart below, there are a variety of very useful indicators that could have generated some significant gains. The first overbought indicator shows the Fast Stochastic Oscillator figure reaching the 80% level and then turning sharply downwards through the three-period SMA. These crossover points are considered by many to be strong indicators that momentum is shifting and the short-term trend may be about to reverse.
The second overbought position begins to emerge when the Fast Stochastic Oscillator and the SMA move above 80%. A move above 80% or below 20% should not necessarily be seen as a signal to sell or buy, but rather as an early warning that momentum may be about to change.
https://preview.redd.it/3taqkc2kne0d1.png?width=1912&format=png&auto=webp&s=e7a55840fdae584d81ebe937210f3b3fe70ecb32
Many people prefer to wait for a sustained drop below 80% or move above 20% before reacting, thus eliminating a degree of volatility that can sometimes create false signals. This is where SMA lines can be very useful, smoother and less volatile, although you won't necessarily sell at the top due to the lag.
You can also see the two false overbought signals where the Fast Stochastic Oscillator figure and the SMA fell below 80. However, they reversed quite quickly when the momentum picked up again and the chart moved back into higher territory.
You will find that where there is a strong uptrend, which has not been broken, at some point there will be a pullback which can be an opportunity to buy into the weakness. This is the reason why the fast stochastic oscillator is more appropriate for day traders, or also for short-term traders.
Bullish/bearish divergence
There will be times when there is a bullish/bearish divergence between the actual chart and the stochastic oscillator indicator. As you can see with the chart below, the lowest point on the chart would indicate the possibility of a further decline. However, when you look at the stochastic oscillator indicator, the trend is moving in a different direction and is slightly bullish.
This may be an indication that the stock has bottomed and momentum may be about to change. One of the main signals to watch out for with this particular chart is the fast stochastic oscillator moving through the SMA line.
https://preview.redd.it/rku5zd2joe0d1.png?width=1087&format=png&auto=webp&s=e6583cea6a63f18ed49327c4f626a39608b9e016
You are equally likely to see a reversal where the main chart indicates an intact uptrend, while the stochastic oscillator shows a slowdown in momentum and a turn towards a downtrend. These are some of the rarest trading signals, but they are very interesting, especially when you incorporate simple trend lines into price charts.

Price trend

The relationship between the Fast Stochastic Oscillator and the SMA is very important. As you can see in the chart below, the first section is dominated by the strong downtrend with the Fast Stochastic Oscillator and the SMA descending in parallel.
Then there is a bounce on the chart followed by a move into choppy waters with an obvious downtrend. As you will see, both indicators remain below the 20% level, indicating that the momentum is relatively weak. That is until the Fast Stochastic Oscillator breaks the SMA line towards the end of the choppy price action area.
https://preview.redd.it/v5d3gkatoe0d1.png?width=520&format=png&auto=webp&s=caa386e1e0e6979fc9210fe18c06c0e3acb9738b
This change in momentum is demonstrated by the uptrend, although it is not difficult to see where the momentum begins to fade above 80%. When the short-term trend line breaks through the SMA and falls below the 80% level, this indicates another change in the trend – a possible sell signal.

Advantages of using the stochastic oscillator

Momentum is very important when it comes to trading and there is no doubt that the stochastic oscillator indicator is a very useful tool. There are a number of advantages to consider which include: –

Sensitive to impulse change

The shorter the period during which the high, low and current price are compared, the more volatile the stochastic oscillator indicator will be. Using SMA trend lines can also create very strong buy/sell signals when the lines cross, especially above 80% and below 20%. This event would indicate that the short-term trend is changing and assuming it continues, a new trend will follow.

Opportunity to identify bullish/bearish divergence

Due to the way the Stochastic Oscillator indicator is calculated, you will sometimes see a divergence between the price chart and the indicator. While the price chart may indicate that a downtrend is still intact, the stochastic oscillator chart may already be identifying a change in momentum before the price changes. As you will see in the chart above, these can be powerful trading signals. How long you can wait to see if a new trend emerges will vary between traders. How brave are you?

The formula is flexible

The shorter the period in question, the more volatile the stochastic oscillator indicator will be. However, there is the possibility of identifying short-term trading opportunities. However, for those who have a longer-term investment strategy, they can extend the number of periods in question. This will flatten the line of the Fast and Volatile Stochastic Oscillator and give a smoother line, which can make it easier to identify any changes in long-term trends.

Risks and limitations of the indicator

As with any technical indicator, the stochastic oscillator is not immune to false signals and is probably best used in conjunction with other trading indicators. Risks and limitations include:

False signals

The shorter the period over which the fast stochastic oscillator is calculated, the more susceptible it is to extreme volatility. This can create numerous false signals, although the impact can be reduced by adding a simple moving average line.

Sideways Trading

The indicator works best when there is a new uptrend, a downtrend or perhaps a short, sharp period of consolidation before the trend re-emerges. During periods of sideways trading, this can create a relatively small gap between the high and low points, therefore creating sharp movements in the indicator on relatively small price movements.

SMA lines delay trend changes

Using longer periods to calculate %K and SMA trend lines can make it easier to identify changes in the trend. However, due to the delay, you may miss a significant element of a changing trend before you decide to buy or sell. You can adjust the variables of the full stochastic oscillator indicator to help you with your specific investment strategy, lengthening or shortening the periods and adjusting the SMA.

Stochastic Oscillator vs Other Indicators

The Stochastic Oscillator indicator is extremely flexible and you can adjust the periods and SMA variables to suit your trading plan. However, especially when looking at limited periods, there will be times when the indicator will create a false signal. Therefore, it is wise to consider other means of technical analysis to clarify whether a potential change in momentum indicated by the stochastic oscillator is also reflected elsewhere.

Stochastic Oscillator vs RSI

While it is true that you can use both the stochastic oscillator and the RSI (Relative Strength Index) to measure price momentum, they work on very different principles. The RSI measures potential overbought/oversold positions by comparing recent gains to recent losses. The idea behind the stochastic oscillator is based on the assumption that the current price should follow the current trend. When the current price moves against the trend, it can indicate a change in momentum and a possible buy/sell signal. So who wins the fight, the Stochastic Oscillator or the RSI?
If the two oscillators indicated the same trend, this would be a powerful signal for investors. For example, if the price of an asset moved towards the upper end of its recent high/low range, it would indicate positive momentum. Assuming that the RSI oscillator is also showing a relatively strong trend, this would reduce the chances of a false signal.

Stochastic Oscillator vs MACD

The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) is a prominent momentum indicator, although it is very different from the stochastic oscillator indicator. The MACD is calculated by subtracting the 26-period exponential moving average from the 12-period exponential moving average. Many traders use the MACD technical indicator in conjunction with the stochastic oscillator, often looking for crossover points between the two.
Those who consider technical indicators from a distance might wonder why traders don't simply use three, four, five or more technical indicators together. The answer is simple: the time lag between different technical indicators can confuse the situation.
By the time several different indicators have “aligned”, you may end up missing the vast majority of the trend. There is nothing wrong with using a single technical indicator, but there are risks and false signals can and do occur.

2024.05.14 17:05 TrainingAverage Learning path for applying dynamical systems in Machine Learning

Hello, after abandoning math school in the last year and doing a BsC and a MsC in Computer Science and I work as a SWE since long time. I did some time ago some courses in ML, but decided to brush up my knowledge and get up to date. To be able to understand ML and read some papers I have realized that I have to learn some Linear Algebra, Calculus and Probabilities and Statistics. These are subjects I studied during my undergraduate school, but it seems not well enough, since I don't remember much apart from Calculus which, for some reason, I really enjoyed.
So, I started learning these Math subjects, I've found some good books and even some great video series. It seems I enjoy Linear Algebra more than I did in school, since the books I bought and videos I watch are more on applied side and use examples from geometry and physics to help to better understand. Also, trying to find myself some real world examples/applications of math using python, numpy, mathplotlib and pytorch, helps me continue to be motivated.
During some research on Reddit over subjects related to math, I discovered some math geniuses such as Lyapunov, Kolmogorov, VI Arnold, which happened to work in dynamical systems. After some reading about dynamical systems, I discovered that dynamical systems can be applied in ML, one trivial example being Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks.
Since my end goal is perfecting ML and AI, but since I also realized that math can be fun (at least a part of) it, I thought, why not mix business and pleasure and learn some more math until I can apply some dynamical systems theory in ML? Anyway, it seems that in order to understand basic dynamical systems I also have to learn subjects I need for ML.
So I devised a learning plan to, hopefully, be able some day to dabble in dynamical systems:
  1. **Calculus**:
    • Review calculus fundamentals: limits, derivatives, integrals, and their applications.
    • Study multivariable calculus: partial derivatives, multiple integrals, and vector calculus.
    • Learn about differential equations: ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and their analytical solutions.
  2. **Linear Algebra**:
    • Understand vector spaces, matrices, and linear transformations.
    • Study eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and their applications.
    • Learn about matrix decompositions (e.g., SVD, QR, LU).
  3. **Probability and Statistics**:
    • Review basic probability theory: random variables, distributions, and expectation.
    • Study statistical inference: hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and estimation.
    • Explore Bayesian statistics and its applications.
  4. **Numerical Methods**:
    • Learn about numerical methods for solving differential equations (e.g., Euler, Runge-Kutta).
    • Study numerical linear algebra techniques (e.g., iterative methods, matrix decompositions).
    • Understand numerical optimization methods (e.g., gradient descent, Newton's method).
  5. **Dynamical Systems**:
    • Study dynamical systems theory: phase portraits, stability analysis, and bifurcations.
    • Explore discrete-time dynamical systems and their applications.
    • Learn about chaotic systems and their properties.
  6. **Dynamical Systems in Machine Learning**:
    • Learn about recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and their applications to sequential data.
    • Study reservoir computing and echo state networks.
    • Explore dynamical systems approaches to reinforcement learning and control problems.
  7. **Advanced Topics**:
    • Study chaos theory and its applications in machine learning.
    • Explore dynamical systems approaches to unsupervised learning and generative models.
    • Learn about dynamical systems in physics-informed machine learning.
Is this a good plan? Is it enough for the start or I also need to study some Topology and Differential Geometry?
I do expect learning to take some time since I work full time, I have kids to take care of and I am supposed to spend some time with friends and family, so time dedicated to study can't be more than 10 hours per week (on any subject, not just math). Also, I am 44, can I still learn some math at this age? Judging that I've already learned some linear algebra, I tend to say yes, but I am not sure if it is 100% learning or remembering some stuff from former math classes I did 20+ years ago.
Thank you for answers and ideas, whatever they might be! :)

so i havent even thought about much of it however (i literally woke up like five seconds ago with this character popping in my head) i want to have a 13th generation sugar baby vampire but i dont know which clan would fit her? again this is a HUGE wip, like i JUST thought of her but i dont know the clans all that well so if anyone has ideas for a clan fitting for a snobby, spoiled sugar baby vampire in her 20s in human years (vampire for 4 years) i would love to hear them!

2024.05.14 16:39 Ancientallove A new mothers small rant

Why is it so hard to find 1.) clothing that is cute AND comfortable for hollering while pregnant and 2.) why the hell aren’t there more affordable options for children’s out door clothing? Why is Patagonia’s $ 40 upf 06-12 months seemingly my only option? I know that adapting your child to you lifestyle rather than changing your life style to accommodate the child is a bit newer generation style of parenting but seriously, it’s should not be this hard or expensive to protect my little bub from the elements, bugs and the sun.
*edit* Before having our child, my husband and I loved backpacking and mountaineering we move around the country a lot and it’s a great way to stay outside and learn about our new area. at the moment, we are living in an area where there are a lot of ticks (and a lot of Lyme disease!)makes me apprehensive to take into the woods without clothing. I’ve been able to find nice UPH/sun shirts for myself and my husband at places like target Walmart thrift shops fairly easily. But it seems as though this is a new idea to have for children. Yes, I did find a couple of uph items made from moisture wicking materials for my little. But the majority of it is still heavy fabrics like cotton that is not ideal for multiday backpacking. Nowhere in my post did I say that I was buying things like Patagonia for my child but rather annoyed seems to be one of the companies that specializes in children’s outdoor clothing more particularly for infants and toddlers. Finding a rated (20f and down)sleeping bag for a toddler seems to be difficult as well which is weird because I have one for my dog. Unless I just buy another one and use it for a-year-old instead of a dog?
