2024.05.12 16:44 TheRealHarrypm Tape Transfer, Tape Digitisation & Tapeless Conversion Starting Guide (2024)

I hope this will be pinned as I want to provide a upto-date full-scope info dump on critical things that have changed over the last few years that people binging YT videos and old threads will be out of the loop on.
The Decode Wiki has a massive amount of information thats proacticly updated and mantained, so here is just a more camcorder format biased summary of a lot info there.

Rule 1

There is a thing called SAVE or LOCK tap on tapes, enable it on all your tapes before playing with them, this will save your ass from careless or just mistakes and stop your from erasing your tapes.

Cleaning & Service

Please do not treat mechnical kit like magic, it requires care and maintaince like a car or a rifle it has a lot of parts that need cleaning and oiling once and awhile or outright replacing like belts and capston rubber wheels.
Paper & 99.9% IPA never 60% etc (water + elecronics just no.) for VHS & Beta head cleaning.
Chamois Sticks (overpriced waste for all but camcorders) for small head cleaning.
Brush, Airblower, Super-Lube, Sowing Machine oil - Genreal cleaning & service.
Lens cleaning should always be with microfibeswabs to clean rims, UV Filters are your dust/shatter protection friends caps are also adviced during sunlight use!

PAL & NTSC

We are not all united in this world of standards per region, never forget the diffrances it can cost you time and suffering.
PAL 625-line (25fps 50 fields "25i") is Europe/Middle East to Russia 50hz grids
NTSC 525-line (29.97fps 59.94 fields "29.97i") is USA/Canada/Japan 60hz grids
Digital active area is 720x576i PAL and NTSC is 720x480i or 488
(there is also 608/512 height called IMX standard for preserving the VBI area both are in analog world sampled at 4fsc or 1135x625 PAL & 910x525 NTSC but only vhs/ld/cvbs-decode provide acesss to the full signal frame.)
NTSC-N/PAL-M/NTSC-50/PAL60 etc (South America and outhers who could not just stick to one unifyed system or slowly migrated with existing kit)
Recorded Media only has 3 flavors in common world use, NTSC/PAL then the french have SECAM or MESECAM for recorded tapes before moving to PAL.
Digital you will use and or encouter i.e 2000s era will only be NTSC/PAL (then flavors of HD in interlaced or progressive 25/24/29.97p) to keep things simple.
PAL decks (most 90's & 2000's decks) will play most MESECAM tapes, will play NTSC tapes also but the standard video output will have 4.43Mhz instead of 3.35Mhz colour subcarrier so NTSC native kit will not like it, such as Time Base correctors or NTSC CRT TVs so you will get B/W video out of a lot of PAL kit with native NTSC support too or it will be just PAL converted by a PAL DMR-ES10 for example.
The decks however are reading full NTSC or MESECAM signal off the tape so the video boards internally are converting the signal, but with direct RF capture will get you a native capture to work with and preserve analog tapes.

Digital Tapes

Massive Guide Here with full scope breakdown
Do NOT HOT PLUG, FireWire is 12v turn kit off hook up cable turn it back on, unless its a adapter from TB2 to TB3 to FW800 with low power data only then its most likey a full spec port with 12v 5A that can kill kit if ports are not clean and you hot plug it.
MiniDV/HDV/Digital8 FireWire Camcorders fall under
StarTech and 101 china brands make cards, I like DVgrab on Linux, but WinDV still works for most Windows Boxes & Final Cut still works on MacOS.

Digital Pro Tapes

HDCam / HDCam SR / DVCProHD / DigiBeta (digital betacam) / MPEG IMX etc
Some decks like DVC do have FireWire but HDcam and Digibeta flavors are all SDI
HDCam falls under SDI - Digital to V210 or FFV1 4:2:2
This applys to decks and camcorders you will be using SDI most likey but some had HDMI 8-bit 4:2:2 output like later HDV camcorders did.

Analog Tapes

VHS-C/SVHS-C/BetaMax/Betacam/Video8/Hi8
SVHS may have VITC timecode in VBI space, Hi8 can have PCM digital audio if shot with pro kit and RCTC data like time and date code on pro and prosumer models.
The best possible method for preserving tapes in the 21st century for analog Video and HiFi signals is The FM RF Archival Method then decoding it to S-Video/Composite in software then chroma-decoding it to YUV digital data all in software, no hardware TBC or this capture card is better then that capture card nightmare or limted codec support, it cuts through the noise (littorally) and plight of inflated hardware markets, VHS-Decode gives you a alternative for all analog tape formats dispite its name.
This is direct sampling of the orignal signals as the deck reads the tapes before its internal processing, this is the most affordable and technologically high quality preservation workflow that anyone can use today, cost of entry is sub 100USD and virtually all decks have test points. (but later decks will not have easy HiFi test points so 90s decks with a good cleaning first are your go to.)
You may even already own a CXADC compatible Hauppauge/WinTV or outher brand of capture card with CX chips the driver can use.
Sony 8mm or Hi8/Video8 and Digital8 with backwards playback support have test jigs that are plug and play for test points.
The older more well known method is deck with S-Video Time Base Corrector "TBC" ADC/Capture Card or a capture card with a TBC, this will cost you 2-20x the cost of a FM RF archival workflow thats with a basic office PC out of the skip basically added to the shopping list.

Making a Camcorder tapeless

Analog - S-Video/CVBS or Compoosite (Yellow RCA or 4-Pin Din for S-Video)
Digital - HDMI (but only HDV MiniDV camcorders had this so S-Video would be the best output in 16:9 squesse mode this applys to Digital8)
Cheep Analog SDI coverters off eBay using a 12v to USB-PD adapter will be the most powerful plug and play clean signal converting kit you can put into a Molle belt pouch or backpack with PD power adapters.
SDI is just HDMI with some more specs and piped over Coax cable orignally it replaced all the Coax copper lines that ran Composite or CVBS in studios and now its good solid locking interface for A/V world using the BNC connector from the 1940s and HDMI converters are a dime a dozen for SDI.
Digital8/MiniDV you can buy little off shelf USB adapters, but for later prosumer kit with NPF mount etc just buy a new 18650 cell based chinese battery they last all day long.
Recorders, Atmos, Blackmagic are your 2 go to brands today, but if you have a laptop just get a Magewell or GV-USB2 based setup and encode with VirtualDub2 or OBS if you like crunching stuff with realtime de-interlacing (its terrible for recorded media never should do it, but for live feeds you can get away with it in most cases as long as your system can keep up and use a codec like ProRes LT)

Power & Power Adapting

You can use 9v with stepdown or 5v with step up to power the 6-7.1v to 7.1 to 8.5v voltage range of camcorders, common batterys today are NPF, BP, V-Mount or Gold Mount with ARRI B-Mount slowing getting adaoption, but USB-PD or 20v 3A PD65W and 20v 5a PD100W power banks are now very cheep and provide more then enough to power most field portable kit.

Codecs & Containers & Chroma Sampling & Bit-Depth

Codecs and Cotainers is fun, but MP4/MOV is banned for archival, you will lose files, they break if the recording/encoding fails midway, do not trust them to store your audio and video memorys forever.
MKV/MXF are the only containers you should keep masters in if not DV/AVI at worst for HD and SD media today very much so if you have a home server with Jellyfin for example header dependent containers like MP4/MOV are poor for streaming locally and over the the internet on demand headderless don't care and are very relisaint if currupton happens you lose frames/seconds not your whole file.
(Note: you can easily re-mux a file from these safe containers for use on outher devices that require avi or mp4 etc its just a wrapper to hold the data, its easy to convert between the two without loss)
Codecs range from lossy compressed like AVC/H264 or HEVC/H265 (in MP4/MOV etc) to Lossy DV25 used for MiniDV/Digital8, to visually lossles like ProRes HQ, and the V210 for uncompressed and FFV1 today for lossless compressed.
Chroma Sub-Sampling is how much colour range data is stored per pixel, 4:2:2 is enough to use green screens and preserve the full range of live from camara Composite NTSC or PAL, ware as 4:4:4 is the same for HD era kit in very lay terms here but this is only for master recordings and for digitisaion.
Bit-Depth is simple 8-bit 256 range 10-bit 1024 range of colour, you want 10-bit almost always for inital capture in digital HD era and in Analog SD archival but can drop it to 8-bit 4:2:0 with careful encoding after the fact many videos on this that are clear and demo this.
For example though in this community DV is 4:1:1 NTSC and 4:2:0 in PAL so if using a Digital8 camcorder to ingest tapes from Video8/Hi8 your not saving the full range of colour and also using a lossy compressed codec at 25-30mbps great for 1995 but for 45-50mbps you can use lossless compressed FFV1 8-bit 4:2:2.

Deinterlacing

101 ways hardware and software converters, personally if your camcorder does not have a progressive or progressive pulldown mode, shoot in interlaced, use Hybird or StaxRip with the QTGMC filter via Vapoursynth or Avisynth its 3-5 clicks today and some copy paste at worst, dont use BDWIF or YADIF if you can help it, and always bare in mind lossy compressed interlaced footage will almost always have artifacts to fight with.
All Analog media in consumeprosumer world is interlaced and should be delt with in post for recorded media.

Final Notes

This is a fun subject that without basic EE/Cine/ENG world info being ingrained into your mind, its not very well condenced for people to get into without making massive mistakes or just ones that are sad to see due to lack of ah heres a nice list of key points to go and google and look into or sticky note on the kit.
I hope this has got you on the path of understanding key info in this era!

2024.05.09 01:01 MerkadoBarkada SPNEC re-confirms plan to sell 40% Terra Solar stake; DigiPlus Q1 profit: P2.0-B (up 370%); RCI director resigns after conflict compromises independence (Thursday, May 9)

  • [UPDATE] SPNEC confirms plans to sell 40% stake in Terra Solar project to foreign investors... SP New Energy [SPNEC 1.10 ▼2.6%; 92% avgVol] [link], now a Meralco [MER 374.80 unch; 80% avgVol] subsidiary under Manny V. Pangilinan’s chairmanship, confirmed reports that it plans to sell “up to 40% equity stake in the Terra Solar” project. The report quoted MVP as saying that SPNEC was in talks with three to five potential investors, and then quoted an unnamed executive who said that SPNEC would take in “at most” two of those potential foreign investors for a combined 40% stake in Terra Solar. MVP said that they were trying to engineer it so that each foreign partner might take a 20% stake. MVP noted that SPNEC still intends to meet its 2026 energization target.
    • MB: Not much here has changed. One key here is that MVP and the gang are talking about bringing those investors in at the Terra Solar project level, not at the SPNEC level. I’ve seen a few commenters around in the forums trying to speculate about how a 40% stake sale at the SPNEC level would impact the stock, but that’s not what SPNEC is contemplating here. They’re looking to sell a 40% stake in a private subsidiary. Why 40%? Because the Terra Solar project owns land and foreigners cannot own more than a 40% interest in corporations that own land. This isn’t a case of MER just looking to monetize a chunk of its new toy; MVP and MER have already said that they need to sell this equity stake to finance the development of the project. So this will need to get done, probably sooner rather than later.
  • [EARNINGS] DigiPlus Q1 profit: ₱2.0-B (up 370%)... DigiPlus Interactive [PLUS 12.76 ▼4.6%; 79% avgVol] [link] reported a Q1 net income of ₱2.0 billion, up 370% y/y from its Q1/23 net income of ₱0.4 billion. PLUS attributed its performance to revenue increases in all of its material business segments: retail games (+237%), casino rental income (+30%), hosting fees (+19%), and other leases (+12%). In the “FUTURE PLANS” portion of the Management’s Discussion and Analysis section, PLUS said that it “continues to execute on its... vision to be the number one digital entertainment group in the Philippines.” PLUS said that it is looking to boost customer retention through the use of “big data technologies” and plans to “embark on aggressive marketing efforts” to “enhance customer engagement.” The group’s Franchise Fees and Taxes expense grew 201% y/y to ₱6.8 billion, but this is the amount that PLUS pays PAGCOR and the government as a percentage of its gross gaming revenue.
    • MB: It’s going to be interesting to see how PLUS handles the “problem” of making too much money. Will it treat these huge quarters like a windfall profit and distribute some large amount of it back to shareholders through a dividend, or will it look to put the money to work? If the management team wants to use the cash for something constructive, how will it configure its investment spend between research and development of its digital gambling platform and more conservative sources of recurring income like land and buildings? The FUTURE PLANS section tells me that they’re not finished building out PLUS into what it could be, so shareholders should probably expect the company to allocate a good amount to realizing that ambitious goal to become our “largest digital entertainment group”.
  • [NEWS] Roxas and Company independent director resigns after conflict of interest compromises indepedence... Roxas and Company [RCI 3.50 ▼4.6%; 28% avgVol] [link] disclosed that one of its independent directors, Aurelio Montinola, tendered his resignation in a letter dated May 6 after RCI sold 250 million treasury shares at a steep discount to a company owned and controlled by his wife, Ging Gonzalez-Montinola. The shares were sold to Ms. Gonzalez-Montinola’s company, Stonebridge Corp, at ₱2.00/share, which was a 38% discount to RCI’s pre-announcement price and a 47% discount to RCI’s market price in the trading session immediately following the announcement. The reason RCI listed for Mr. Montinola’s resignation was, “[N]o longer qualified to serve as an Indepdent Director.”
    • MB: Independent directors are meant to be the “adult in the room” so to speak, to help ensure that a company operates in a legal and ethical way. They’re supposed to be free of any incentives that could cloud their judgment and cause the company to make decisions that favor non-public interests ahead of those of the public shareholder class. So, while it is entirely appropriate for Mr. Montinola to tender his resignation as an independent director after selling his wife a 9% stake in the company at a sweetheart price, it feels like there’s more to the story. How is it in the best interest of public shareholders for the management team to sell a massive block of shares at such a low price? They raised ₱500 million selling shares that were worth ₱800 million to ₱930 million. By selling to Mr. Montinola’s wife, the management team could have left ₱300 to ₱430 million “on the table”. That’s not very independent. The optimist in me had a sensible chuckle at the thought of Mr. Montinola being like, “Guys, please, let’s sell to anybody but my wife! Just think of my independence!”, and then the evil RCI board laughing maniacally as they called Ms. Gonzalez-Montinola on speakerphone in front of Mr. Montinola just to vex him and rub his face in the impropriety of the deal. Was the sale a “poison pill” to prevent Leandro Leviste from taking some control from RCI’s management group? In the end, I don’t care. This sale stinks for public shareholders, and it makes a mockery of what it means to be an independent director. Retail investors should take this as instructive in terms of the limits of what may be expected from the protections afforded by independent directorships.

2024.05.09 00:36 Lowpasss Question about ground planes.

Got some new antennas from DigiKey today. ANT-916-CW-HW-SMA and FW.95.B.SMA.M.
The ANT-916's look nice (SWR<1.5) on my calibrated nanoVNA. The FW.95, bad (SWR>2.4), unless I'm touching the base, then much better (SWR<1.4).
This is something to do with ground planes? I've read up on people building antennas on SO239 connectors with ground-plane radiators. Is it possible in theory to make something similar around an SMA to IPEX adaptor?
Where I'm located my nodes are stuck to glass with suction cups or battery powered mobile. I could probably rig a metal disc around the base of the SMA connector. Or connect them to mains ground? On the nanoVNA having USB attached or not doesn't seem to affect anything. Same with using a short lead vs. connected directly to the meter.
Advice would be appreciated.
Edit: On closer inspection, " For an environment where there is no ground-plane available we recommend to use the terminal mount antenna the TI.19 or the outdoor fiberglass omni antenna the OMB.915." is right there in the data sheet.

2024.05.07 09:58 Digiavenir Why And How Local Businesses Should Use Video In Their Digital Marketing?

In today’s digital landscape, video has become an increasingly powerful tool for local businesses to connect with their audience and drive engagement. From showcasing products and services to sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses, video content offers unique opportunities to engage, inform, and delight customers. In this article, we’ll explore why local businesses should embrace video in their digital marketing efforts and provide actionable tips on how to do so effectively.

I. Introduction

In an era where attention spans are shrinking, video has emerged as a highly effective medium for capturing and retaining audience attention. For local businesses, incorporating video into their digital marketing strategy can help them stand out from the competition and attract more customers. In the following sections, we’ll delve into the various benefits of using video, the types of videos local businesses can create, tips for effective video production, distribution strategies, and how to measure success.

II. Benefits of Using Video

A. Increased engagement and retention

Video content is more engaging and memorable than text or static images, making it an excellent way to capture and hold viewer attention. By incorporating video into your digital marketing efforts, you can increase engagement with your audience and encourage them to spend more time interacting with your brand.

B. Improved SEO and online visibility

Search engines like Google prioritize video content in search results, making it easier for local businesses to improve their online visibility and attract more organic traffic to their website. By optimizing your videos with relevant keywords and metadata, you can enhance your chances of ranking higher in search engine results pages (SERPs) and reaching a broader audience.

C. Building trust and credibility

Video allows local businesses to showcase their products, services, and expertise in a more authentic and engaging way, helping to build trust and credibility with their audience. By sharing customer testimonials, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and educational content, businesses can establish themselves as authorities in their industry and foster stronger connections with their customers.

III. Types of Videos for Local Businesses

A. Product or service showcases

Create videos that highlight your products or services, showcasing their features, benefits, and unique selling points. Use visuals, demonstrations, and customer testimonials to illustrate the value proposition and encourage viewers to make a purchase.

B. Customer testimonials and reviews

Share video testimonials from satisfied customers to build social proof and credibility. Hearing directly from happy customers can help to alleviate any doubts or concerns potential customers may have and encourage them to choose your business over competitors.

C. Behind-the-scenes glimpses

Offer viewers a behind-the-scenes look at your business operations, employees, and culture. Humanize your brand and make it more relatable by showing the faces and personalities behind the business, fostering a sense of authenticity and connection with your audience.

D. Educational content

Provide valuable information and insights to your audience through educational videos that address common questions, challenges, or pain points related to your industry. Position your business as a trusted source of knowledge and expertise, helping to attract and retain customers over the long term.

IV. Tips for Creating Effective Videos

A. Keep videos short and to the point

Attention spans are limited, so aim to keep your videos concise and focused. Get straight to the point and deliver your message quickly to capture and maintain viewer interest.

B. Ensure high-quality production

Invest in high-quality equipment and production techniques to ensure that your videos look and sound professional. Poorly produced videos can detract from your brand’s credibility and professionalism, so strive for excellence in every aspect of production.

C. Incorporate branding and calls to action

Use your videos as an opportunity to reinforce your brand identity and messaging. Incorporate your logo, colors, and visual elements consistently throughout your videos, and include clear calls to action to encourage viewers to take the next step, whether it’s visiting your website, making a purchase, or contacting your business.

V. Distribution and Promotion Strategies

A. Share videos on social media platforms

Utilize social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube to share your videos with a wider audience. Tailor your content to each platform’s audience and format, and engage with viewers through comments, shares, and likes to maximize reach and engagement.

B. Embed videos on website and blog

Incorporate videos into your website and blog to enrich your content and provide visitors with valuable information and entertainment. Embedding videos can also improve your website’s SEO and encourage visitors to spend more time on your site, reducing bounce rates and increasing conversion rates.

C. Collaborate with local influencers or businesses

Partner with local influencers or complementary businesses to expand your reach and attract new customers. Collaborate on joint video projects, cross-promote each other’s content, and leverage each other’s audience to increase visibility and credibility within the local community.

VI. Measuring Success and Adjusting Strategies

A. Track video engagement metrics

Monitor key performance indicators such as views, likes, shares, comments, and click-through rates to gauge the effectiveness of your video marketing efforts. Use analytics tools to track performance over time and identify trends and patterns to inform future strategies.

B. Gather feedback from audience

Solicit feedback from your audience through surveys, comments, and social media interactions to understand their preferences, interests, and needs. Use this feedback to refine your video content and delivery to better resonate with your target audience.

C. Adapt and refine video marketing strategies accordingly

Continuously evaluate and iterate on your video marketing strategies based on performance data and audience feedback. Experiment with different types of content, distribution channels, and promotion tactics to identify what works best for your business and adjust your approach accordingly.

VII. Conclusion

2024.05.06 22:23 Viridono DIY earphones: how do I get started choosing drivers?

Want to make my own nice-ish pair of earphones from scratch for fun and because I’m cheap. Struggling with how to go about choosing the right driver hardware from a sound standpoint. I’ve been browsing DigiKey for tiny drivers, either dynamic or BA, and I roughly know what frequency response I want.
Assuming a super simple wired design with a 3.5mm jack, when designing audio hardware, can I just go for a reasonable driver with the desired response, and then design the electrical around it?
And I guess more broadly, as someone with a fair amount of background in hardware design who’s NEVER touched audio, is there anything particular to consider when doing audio hardware compared to other types?

2024.05.06 19:49 NotAHotDog247 Getting up and running. Not seeing anything in Node list.

Hey peeps,
I just got 2 heltec v3.1s as a cheap starter into this hobby and am slowly starting to figure all this stuff out.
I've essentially taped one to a window on the upper floor of my house.
I have seen 2 other nodes briefly pop up, but didn't show up on my node list. It says the signal is super low. And I'm wondering if there are some things I can do to increase the signal so I can reliably connect with them.
I've ordered 2 inexpensive dipole antennas from digi key that are supposedly tuned quite well for 915mhz. (I've heard the stock antennas are not optimal)
I have a strong electronics background but I'll admit I have little telecoms/RF knowledge.
Would having the antenna directly against the glass work against me?
I know getting it outside and up high is best. But that would take some more investment that I'm hesitant to make so early into trying a hobby. (But I'm willing to eventually)
Any suggestions are appreciated, because I'm very much new to this.
tldr: Need help getting stronger signal to nodes in my area.
FYI, I'm in Airdrie just north of Calgary, if anyone here is also in that area.

Apex Legends: Upheaval Patch Notes (Season 21)

Upheaval Gameplay Trailer & Discussion

NEW LEGEND: ALTER

Alter is an agent of chaos, primarily concerned with having fun and bringing about the end of the world. Everything is a game to her, and she is always looking for an advantage. Her kit adds an entirely unique dimension to the Apex Games, allowing her to create void passages through geo or escape through the Void to her Nexus when her enemies believe they have the upper hand. Her ability to craft unsuspecting rotations through the world will sow new levels of disorder in the ring and she can’t wait to watch the whole place burn.

For more details on our newest and most devious Legend, check out our Highlights Blog. Read more about her abilities below.

PASSIVE: GIFT FROM THE RIFT
Can remotely interact with a deathbox to claim one item. Cannot be a shield core.

TACTICAL: VOID PASSAGE
Creates a portal passageway through a surface.

ULTIMATE: VOID NEXUS
Create a regroup point that all allies can remotely interact with to open a phase tunnel back to that location.

SOLOS TAKEOVER

In case you missed it, Solos will be taking over Duos from May 7, 2024 to June 24, 2024. We’ve taken aspects of some of our most popular modes and integrated them to keep things interesting: use your Battle Sense to detect nearby enemies, tear things up with pre-kitted weapons and attachments, and keep the fight going with auto heal and Second Chance mechanics.

PATCH NOTES

BALANCE UPDATES

Care Package
  • Wingman returns to the floor
    • Projectile size reduced to pre-care package values
    • Damage reduced to 45 (was 50)
    • Skullpiercer Elite removed
    • Hipfire accuracy reduced
    • Now takes Boosted Loader Hop-Up
    • No longer takes magazines as an attachment
  • Devotion enters the Care Package
    • NEW Reverse Hipfire: sustained hipfire will tighten accuracy instead of widen
    • Damage increased to 16 (was 15)
    • Magazine size increased to 54 (was 48 at purple)
    • Reserve Ammo: 324
    • Empty reload time significantly reduced
Gold Weapons Rotation
  • Nemesis Burst AR, Triple-Take, Peacekeeper, Prowler PDW, Longbow DMR
Guaranteed Weapons out of Loot Bins
  • The first loot bin opened by an unarmed player will always contain a weapon
Dev Note: Bringing knuckles to a gunfight isn’t the most engaging gameplay, so we’re improving weapon acquisition consistency in the early game. When completely unarmed, opening a bin will guarantee at least a low tier weapon.
Retrieving Banners from Death Boxes
  • Collecting a banner will no longer lock the player out of critical gameplay actions
    • Running, shooting, punching and reviving will all break out of the banner collect animation while still registering as a successful collection
    • Players can immediately interact with a Death Box a second time while the animation is playing or continue holding the interact button to collect and enter a Death Box in one flow
Dev Note: It’s happening, it’s finally happening! I’ve died, you’ve died, we’ve all died trying to help our allies get back in the fight, but at least now we can’t blame grabbing the banner! Collecting banners is a positive action in Apex and for too long we’ve punished that action with a brief moment of pure helplessness. We’re putting your gun quite literally back in your hands, so get out there and save some Octanes and Wraiths!
Survival Items + Support Bins
  • Survival items now only spawn from a support bin’s tray if the team is in need
Dev Note: Survival items have been feeling abundant lately so we’re reducing their frequency in support bins by only spawning them when players meet specific requirements (like needing a Mobile Respawn Beacon when you’ve got eliminated allies)

WEAPONS & ATTACHMENTS

30-30 Repeater
  • Skullpiercer Hop-Up removed
Dev Note: The 30-30 has been dominating the mid-long range for a few seasons and our recent adjustments weren’t quite enough to dethrone it. Removing the Skullpiercer should create some space for other Marksman and Sniper rifles to shine.
Charge Rifle
  • ADS recoil improved and stabilized
Dev Note: The Charge Rifle remains a high risk-reward weapon, however the risk slightly outweighs the reward. We’ve taken a smoothing pass at its recoil so it shouldn’t be quite so unwieldy when firing.
Longbow DMR
  • Skullpiercer Hop-Up removed
  • Barrel Stabilizer attachment removed
  • Base recoil significantly improved
  • Projectile gravity reduced
  • ADS in and out time reduced
Dev Note: We’ve always considered the Longbow a great entry level sniper that’s easy to run. Over time, we’ve come to realize that being a good entry level weapon and requiring lots of attachments to come online are at odds with one another. Simplifying the Longbow’s loot chase to make it more base level approachable is intended to improve its early game effectiveness and overall consistency as a sniper.
Triple-Take
  • Now takes Boosted Loader Hop-Up
Dev Note: The Triple-Take is a strong weapon on paper, but it can feel a bit sluggish to maximize damage output. Providing quick reloads and extra ammo in the mag allows players to keep pressuring for longer with more chances to punish.
Hop-Ups
  • Skullpiercer removed from the loot pool
  • Boosted Loader added to the loot pool
    • Reloading while near empty will speed up reloading and overload the next magazine with extra rounds
1x Digital Threat Optic
  • Removed from loot pool and all locked set weapons
Dev Note: The Digi represents a sharp power spike in Apex—a single loot item that both counters and synergies with a specific Legend. Its power ebbs and flows with the Legend meta in a way that proves very difficult to tune. We’re giving the 1x Digi a hiatus while we investigate healthier optic based perks.

LEGENDS

Ash
  • Arc Snare
    • Changed to left-hand cast
    • No longer stows weapons or interrupts consumable use when launching
  • Phase Breach: inspired by some Alter tech, nearby enemies will be highlighted for players traveling through the Void
Dev Note: It’s about time, huh? Allowing Ash to fire her Arc Snare with her off-hand has been something we’ve wanted to do for a while now. Holstering and redrawing her weapon to use the snare put Ash at a disadvantage in combat and minimized a lot of her play options. Ash should now be able to be much more active with her snare and apply pressure more aggressively when successful.

Ballistic
  • Whistler: damage from a planted smart bullet increased to 10 (was 5)
  • Upgrades
    • Care Package Insight: removed
    • NEW Sling-Shot: improves Ballistic’s base sling weapon to a blueset at Level 2 and a purpleset at Level 3
Dev Note: We’re replacing a lackluster perk with something more interesting, especially for those Ballistic players that like tapping into their sling weapons in non-Ult scenarios. Three Tac related upgrades is plenty, let’s make some room for that third weapon.
Breakout: Level 2
Lasting Bullet
Smart Bullet duration in-world is tripled.
Care Package Insight
Reveal Care Packages.

Upheaval: Level 2
Lasting Bullet
Smart Bullet duration in-world is tripled.
Sling-Shot
Sling weapon levels up with each upgrade selection.

Bloodhound
  • Beast of the Hunt
    • Cooldown increased to 4m (was 3m)
    • Knocks with Ult active no longer extend duration
  • Upgrades: Level 3
    • Tactical Cooldown: removed
    • Taste of Blood: buffed HP gain on knock to 50 (was 25)
    • NEW Long Hunt: knocks extend Beast of the Hunt duration
Dev Note: Beast of the Hunt has a lot of power baked into it considering perfect vision through smoke, increased move speed, and a generous extension timer. We wanted to break that down to see if players lean into a specific playstyle and ax the uninteresting hidden power of a decreased Tac cooldown. Bloodhound synergizes very well with two of the most popular Legends at the comp level, but we want to be mindful of their appeal across skill bands. We’re not doing anything big to this approachable Legend until we gauge their place at the top-end in a digi free world.
Breakout: Level 3
Taste of Blood
Gain 25 hp on knocks while Ultimate is active.
Tactical Cooldown
-5s Tac Cooldown

Upheaval: Level 3
Long Hunt
Knocks extend Beast of the Hunt duration.
Taste of Blood
Gain 50 hp on knocks while Ultimate is active.

Catalyst
  • Piercing Spikes
    • Cooldown decreased to 20s (was 25s)
    • Long Cast upgrade integrated into base Tactical
  • Dark Veil
    • Dark Veil length increased to 45m (was 40m)
  • Upgrades
    • Long Cast: removed
    • Long Veil: moved to Level 2
    • NEW Ferro-Door: fully rebuild and reinforce missing doors with Passive.
Dev Note: Catalyst could use some love after her Ult nerfs, and Sister Spikes needed some competition. Hopefully making Tac charges more available with a baseline cooldown buff and creating a situationally strong alternative via passive upgrade helps strike a balance. Now that the Ult upgrades are decoupled, there are some difficult choices to make at both levels that we suspect are influenced by match flow. Will you hunker down with a friendly zone pull, or will you need an upgraded wall to help with rotations?
Breakout: Level 2
Sister Spikes
Increase max number of active Spikes by one.
Long Cast
Increase Spike throw range by 40%.

Upheaval: Level 2
Long Veil
Increase Ultimate length by 15m.
Sister Spikes
Increase max number of active Spikes by one.

Breakout: Level 3
Resilient Veil
Increase Ultimate lifetime by 5s
Long Veil
Increase Ultimate length by 15m

Upheaval: Level 3
Ferro-Door
Fully rebuild and reinforce missing doors with Passive.
Resilient Veil
Increase Ultimate lifetime by 5s.

Caustic
  • Gas damage and slow now stops immediately after Caustic's squad is eliminated
  • Gas damage ramps from 4 → 10 max (was 5 → uncapped), damage on knocked players down to flat 4 (was 5)
Conduit
  • Radiant Transfer
    • Can no longer target a Revenant while Forged Shadows is active
    • When Revenant activates Forged Shadows, any temporary shield generation ends immediately. Revenant will keep any temporary shields generated before activating his Ultimate.
  • Upgrades
    • Battery Collection: removed
    • NEW Battpack: can stack up to 3 Shield Batteries per inventory slot (doesn’t stack with Gold Backpack)
Dev Note: Conduit maintains a healthy pick rate and has cemented herself as a strong Support pick even after her last round of nerfs. We don’t want to hit her effectiveness as a Legend that pushes the tempo in combat. This is a targeted nerf to one of her synergies that felt more exploitable than we’d like.
Breakout: Level 2
Battery Collection
See Battery Count of death boxes.
Bigger Jam
Jammer damage radius increased by 20%.

Upheaval: Level 2
Battpack
Stack up to 3 batteries per inventory slot.
Bigger Jam
Jammer damage radius increased by 20%.

Crypto
  • Neurolink
    • Network Traffic upgrade now integrated into base kit
    • Squadcount banners are now visible anytime the drone is in a deployed state
  • Upgrades: Level 2
    • Tac & Ultimate Cooldowns: removed
    • Network Expansion: moved to Level 2
    • NEW Quick Ping: improved drone handling (faster accel/decel)
  • Upgrades: Level 3
    • NEW Satellite Imagery: drone scan persists for an additional 1.5s
    • NEW Hackathon: cut the drone cooldown in half, gain a speed boost anytime he uses his Ult or the drone is destroyed
Dev Note: Crypto’s upgrades at the start of Season 20 left a lot to be desired. We hope this suite of changes resonates with a couple different playstyle types—particularly when it comes to players’ affinity to pilot the drone more actively vs. passively.
Breakout: Level 2
Tactical Cooldown+
Reduce Tactical cooldown by 10 seconds.
Ultimate Cooldown
Reduce Ultimate cooldown by 20%.

Upheaval: Level 2
Network Expansion
Passive & Ult range increased by 25%.
Quick Transmission
Improved drone handling.

Breakout: Level 3
Network Expansion
Passive & Ult range increased by 25%.
Network Traffic
Deploying the drone calls out squads in the area.

Upheaval: Level 3
Hackathon
Double drone recharge rate; gain speed boost when it explodes.
Satellite Imagery
Drone scan persists for 1.5 seconds.

Fuse
  • Upgrades
    • Big Bang: removed
    • NEW Ring Master: gain access to Ring Consoles
    • Scar Tissue:
      • Simplified and buffed damage mitigation to remove lingering burn effects
      • Take a flat 20 damage when crossing The Motherlode instead of 37 (50% of 75 hp) over time
    • Wreckless: fixed explosive damage mitigation not being applied on continuous Knuckle Cluster hits (should only take about 32 damage from a full Knuckle Cluster now with Wreckless)
Dev Note: Fuse is destruction and chaos. The goal of these changes, whether it be a new strategic-level upgrade or a simplification of a convoluted damage model, is to bring some method to the madness.
Breakout: Level 2
Big Bang
See ordnance through walls & death boxes.
Scar Tissue
Take 50% damage and ignore slow effects of The Motherlode.

Upheaval: Level 2
Ring Master
Gain access to Ring Consoles.
Scar Tissue
Take 20 damage and ignore slow effects from The Motherlode.

Newcastle
  • Mobile Shield: throw anim speed increased (~2.5x faster)
  • Castle Wall
    • Will now destroy incoming projectiles headed towards the front of the wall while energized. It will not destroy projectiles fired from behind the wall nor bombardments from other Legend’s Ultimate projectiles.
    • Castle Wall energized duration increased to 1m (was 30s)
  • Upgrade - Stronghold: increased energized duration to 3m (was 2.5m)
Dev Note: The Castle Wall’s in-game strength rarely matches the grandeur of its presentation. More often than not, the wall serves as a grenade beacon to surrounding threats knowing that Newcastle just jumped to an ally in distress. An Ultimate-level wall should not fail as much as it does, especially on a Support Legend that’s built around turning the tide when his squad starts losing the advantage. The wall now requires more calculated counterplay and makes the Stronghold upgrade a more compelling option. We were also finding the long wind-up when tossing his Mobile Shield left him pretty vulnerable trying to get back to his weapon, so we’ve sped up the animation to let him be more reactive with it.

Octane
  • Upgrades
    • Wreckless: removed
    • Mad Hops moved to Level 2
    • Thick Skin: now Level 2 and 3, updated to take 5 less Stim damage to reflect that it can be selected twice (was -25%)
Dev Note: Octane has a “Plus Ultra'' tattoo, so we shouldn’t inhibit his ability to double down on his tac or ult. While Wreckless was thematically fun, Octane already has one of the best forms of explosive damage mitigation that’s less hidden: stim away.
Breakout: Level 2
Thick Skin
-25% Stim damage
Wreckless
-50% Explosive damage

Upheaval: Level 2
Mad Hops
Gain an extra Launch Pad charge.
Thick Skin
Take 5 less Stim damage.

Breakout: Level 3
Mad Hops
Gain an extra Launch Pad charge.
Airborne Agility
Change directions with Launch Pad double-jump.

Upheaval: Level 3
Airborne Agility
Change directions with Launch Pad double-jump.
Thick Skin
Take 5 less Stim damage.

Wattson
  • Upgrades
    • Falling Stars: Pylons will stop spawning Arc Stars when her squad is eliminated
    • Split Circuit: no longer reduces shield regen capacity
Wraith
  • Into the Void and Dimensional Rift: nearby enemies will be highlighted for players traveling through the Void

RANKED

  • All players in a premade Ranked squad must be within 3 Rank tiers of each other or they will not be allowed to progress to matchmaking
  • No tuning changes to be made to ranked scoring for the launch of Upheaval
Dev Note: While we are happy with how Breakout Ranked was received, there is some feedback that we want to address for the start of Upheaval. As always, we’ll be monitoring feedback and data for any required tuning changes during the season and any major updates required for the future.
Season Reset
  • Where you ended in your last season of Ranked will determine where you start in Upheaval
    • If you ended your last season in Rookie, you will be reset to 1 RP
    • If you ended your last season above Rookie, you will be reset to Bronze IV
Split Timing
  • Split 2 will take place at the same time as the .1 patch, not a week after like in previous seasons
Upheaval Ranked Rewards
  • Your end-of-season rewards will now be determined by the highest Rank tier you achieved during the entire season
  • Split Rewards: your season-end reward badge will be animated if you match or surpass your Split 1 Rank in Split 2
    • If you do not achieve this, you will get the normal version of your badge

WORLD SYSTEMS

QUALITY OF LIFE

  • Additional security improvements
  • Airdropping Replicators now project a beam upwards as they are descending to help differentiate them from other airdrops
  • Back by popular demand, you can requeue at the end of Pubs BR and Mixtape matches
  • Ballistic: can now add any locked-set weapon into the sling where it will be converted to the proper locked-set tier and restored to its original state when being moved out (red-tier still not allowed)
  • Death Box Flyers: option to automatically ping the location of the Death Box will be prompted when knocking it from a Flyer’s grasp
  • Improved the choice of consumables that are auto-selected when either reaching full health, reaching full shields, or when dropping your last selected item. • Upgraded to the latest version of Easy Anti-Cheat

  • Improved accuracy of baked lighting for dynamic objects, to avoid situations where Legends would appear unlit
  • Significantly improved CPU performance of the Rendering Hardware Interface (RHI), mostly benefitting the PC DirectX 12 beta
Nessie Note: Nessie would like to congratulate everyone on the success of finally finding Blue Nessie. Our girl is finally free! The Nessie Army is now complete!

Quarterly Transparency Report for January-March 2024: Censorship, Surveillance, Smartcities and more Internet Freedom Foundation

https://preview.redd.it/ry92wryvzryc1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=48f91f8b5906f3b0ab59c1203be85031fc94b466

tl;dr

In 2023, IFF’s transparency vertical filed 64 RTI applications with various public authorities at the state and union levels to bring transparency and accountability into the functioning of a number of public authorities, and empower Indian citizens with information that affects their digital rights. Some notable responses from this quarter include a push-and-pull with MIB on comments it received in the Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, 2023, stonewalling of information on censorship and content blocking/takedown orders from the government, more non-transparency into the Digi Yatra ecosystem, the POSHAN App being non-mandatory, and more.

Why should you care?

The Right to Information Act, 2005 (“RTI Act”) was enacted to promote transparency and accountability in the working of public authorities by ensuring that citizens are able to secure access to information in control of these authorities. Facilitating such access is necessary to ensure that democratic processes are not subverted by public authorities acting in private interests. Where transparency is not upheld as a value of public decision-making, citizens are at a disadvantage when it comes to keeping a check on abuse of power by the public authorities.
The RTI Act is thus one of the most important tools at the disposal of the public to engage with, and demand transparency and accountability from, our union and state governments. The Digital Transparency vertical at IFF strives to routinely extract information about various ongoing policies and projects introduced in the public sector through RTI Applications filed under the Act. Responses we receive often pave the way for government engagement, advocacy, and even strategic litigation. Previous reports on our transparency endeavours can be accessed here.

RTIs we filed

Here is a list of RTIs we filed this quarter:
  1. On November 23, 2023 the Department of Personnel and Training published a notification bearing reference number G.S.R 864(E), placing the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (“CERT-In”) under the Second Schedule of the RTI Act—thereby exempting it from the application of the Act. In an attempt to have more transparency on the legislative processes involved in notifying a public authority under this schedule, we filed 8 RTIs this quarter asking the Department for legislative process and history of 8 exempted intelligence and security agencies (including CERT-In). Read our statement on how exempting CERT-In from the RTI Act dilutes institutional transparency and weakens individual privacy here.
  2. We asked the Ministry of Electronics & IT (“MeitY”) detailed questions about the WhatsApp message sent from the ‘Viksit Bharat Sampark’ account to millions of users, including where they got our numbers from. Read our post decoding the message and what it means for voter privacy during the 2024 General Elections here.
  3. We filed a number of RTIs on the surveillance and censorship efforts during the Ram Temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya on January 22, 2024. We asked the Ministry of Home Affairs (“MHA”) about the blocking of 100 social media accounts ahead of the Ram Temple consecration ceremony by MHA and real-time monitoring of social media websites by a “cyber experts group”, and the installation of “high accuracy” CCTV cameras in Ayodhya as a security measure by the UP Government.
  4. We asked MeitY and the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (“MIB”) many questions on content censorship, takedowns, and blocking:
    1. We asked MeitY and MIB about the takedown of Bihar railway worker protest videos from YouTube.
    2. We asked MeitY and MIB about the suspension of Media Swaraj channel from YouTube.
    3. We asked MeitY and MIB about X/Twitter accounts blocked during the Farmers’ Protests in February 2024 through 12 separate RTIs. We maintained a tracker for these blockings and our RTIs.
    4. We asked MeitY and MIB about the takedown of the Caravan Magazine story ‘Screams from the Army Post’.
  5. We asked the Bengaluru Traffic Police about their pilot project where they allegedly sent information about the specific traffic violation to the violator’s respective IT company through email or Whatsapp of the company employees.
  6. We asked about the constitution of fact-check units in Patna (here) and Odisha (here).
  7. We asked many public authorities about the use of artificial intelligence in governance:

  2. We asked the MHA about takedown powers of agencies it has notified as the agencies that can send takedown orders to intermediaries on illegal content related to cyber crimes under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, including the National Crime Records Bureau and recently the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre.
  3. We asked the Gujarat State Revenue Department about a notification they issued introducing Aadhaar verification for registration of documents under Gujarat Registration Rules, 2023.
  4. We asked about the legal framework behind the lawless Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (“APAAR”) student ID.
  5. In context of the Farmers’ Protests again, we asked about the use of drones for surveillance of protesters by the Haryana Police.
  6. We asked MIB for copies of comments and interministerial communications it received in response to the consultation on the Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, 2023.
  7. We asked about two AI interventions in health, namely Doctor on Wheels (here) and Project BHISHM (here).
  8. We asked about a tender published by Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education for the development of SSO service to facilitate access to the State’s Learning Management System portal.
  9. MeitY notified an amendment to Rule 23 (sub-rule 1) of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Interception, Monitoring and Decryption of Information) Rules 2009 on February 26, 2024 vide GSR 133(E), allowing certain security agencies to destroy interception records. We asked MeitY about interministerial communications it received in response to the amendment.
  10. We asked the Election Commission about their partnership with Staqu Technologies Pvt Ltd as is claimed on the latter’s website.

Round-up of prominent responses

We tracked policy consultations, news headlines, and emerging government schemes to make measured RTI interventions on a number of concerning initiatives. Here are some key responses we received to our RTIs this year, along with a summary of outcomes that emerged from them:

The Broadcasting Bill files

In November 2023, the MIB published the draft Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill for public consultation. On December 07, 2023, we submitted our comments on the bill, and launched the Letuschill.in campaign, encouraging our community to also send in templatised email responses as comments for the bill. Following this, on February 23, 2024, we wrote a letter to MIB requesting the publication of all received comments on the Ministry's website, with personal information redacted. Simultaneously, we filed an RTI application with MIB, seeking details and copies of the consultation responses.
Then, things got interesting. On March 01, 2024, MIB sent an email to us and other stakeholders who submitted comments, saying they have received RTI requests to disclose their comments, requesting them to give consent for the same within 10 days. We promptly provided our consent as IFF, and sent a mailer to our community explaining the process to them and encouraging them to give their consent with personal details redacted, if they so prefer.
Thereafter, we received an RTI response from MIB through which they made some interesting arguments. First, they claimed that the comments submitted by stakeholders cannot be disclosed without their consent as that would violate their privacy and intellectual property rights. Despite this, MIB requested a sum of Rs. 934 from us to send us copies of the 417 comments it could make public. We duly paid the sum and now await their response. Additionally, alongside this process on March 04, 2024, we reiterated the necessity of transparently sharing all consultation responses, urging the redaction of personal details before publication. We await movement on this and will keep you posted.

What happens in Ayodhya…

In our ongoing efforts to gather comprehensive information surrounding the Ram Temple ceremony in Ayodhya on January 22, 2024, we filed 4 RTI requests with different departments, seeking details and procedures associated with the widespread AI-enabled surveillance and security measures being adopted in the city (as described above). The response from the DGP, UP was particularly noteworthy, as they shared a copy of the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) used by the UP Police during the ceremony. This document may hold some valuable insights into the protocols and strategies adopted by the local police—we are currently in the process of meticulously analysing the SOP and will publish it shortly.

Don’t ask, don’t tell: Censorship edition

In all our efforts to get information on content censorship, takedowns, and blocking across Farmers’ protests, Caravan story takedown, media blocking and constitution of fact-check units, we got comparable tight-lipped responses. The trifecta of Section 69A (Information Technology Act), Rule 16 (Information Technology rules), and 8(1)(a) of the RTI Act was used liberally in response. We await responses on some of these and will be collating these findings in a censorship report shortly, deeply analysing these responses and identifying trends.

Daastan-e-DigiYatra

We sought information on the data ecosystem and operations of Digi Yatra with regional airports in December 2023, but the responses lacked information and clarity. Ministry of Civil Aviation and Airports Authority of India stated that Digi Yatra is not mandatory (though the story on ground is different!), and the Bengaluru International Airport Limited (“BIAL”) stated that whether BIAL is a public authority and therefore under the RTI Act is still “sub-judice” (being decided by a court of law).

Don’t act smart(city) with me!

Because of the recent surge and deployment of artificial intelligence in the public sector, especially in smart city initiatives, we filed a bunch of RTIs with the different ministries and departments. But as usual, received little to no information in return. IFF has built an AI/ML tracker Transparency Tracker on the use of AI/ML in the Indian public sector (we will make this public soon!), which goes to show the extent of non-transparency and accountability evasion in this domain.

POSHAN Tracker not mandatory

We filed 3 separate RTIs with the Ministry of Women and Child Development last year in the context of the POSHAN tracking application regarding beneficiary concerns, Anganwadi and health worker concerns (if it is mandatory and if they are being provided with any technical training), collecting and tracking data of children with disabilities and asking if there is privacy impact assessment and a cost-benefit analysis instituted for the POSHAN app. One response (which came many months late!) stated that the POSHAN app is not mandatory for Anganwadi workers and that technical training of Anganwadi workers on the app is done on a regular basis through the National e-Governance Division and National Institute of Public Corporation and Child Development. They also mentioned that POSHAN is not used to track attendance, or at least mandatorily. Lastly, they noted that the privacy impact assessment and a cost-benefit analysis are points under “active consideration”.

The APAAR trouble

We have filed a host of RTIs with the Ministry of Education about
the seemingly lawless APAAR ID which is being implemented at breakneck speed across India, only to receive mind-numbing responses. We will soon release a detailed analysis of our transparency efforts around APAAR in a separate post.

ECI’s big secret?

We filed an RTI with the Election Commission of India (“ECI”) regarding the partnership between the ECI and technology provider Staqu Technologies Pvt. Ltd (Staqu). In the response, the PIO disposed of this RTI vide the impugned response stating that the “Election Commission of India has not been partnership or engaged with M/s Staqu Technologies Pvt. Ltd.(Staqu) for voter awareness related activities”. We are planning to file a first appeal as the information given was inadequate and incomplete. In the RTI, the information sought was for all and any partnerships between the ECI and Staqu Technologies Pvt. Ltd. and is not limited to only “voter awareness activities” to which the ECI has responded.

So, what’s next?

Well, we shall continue to track the news and file pertinent RTI requests, and keep fighting the good fight for transparent, accountable, and citizen-led democratic institutions. We look forward to receiving responses to the remaining RTIs and will keep you updated in our next quarterly report, so stay tuned!

2024.05.05 05:00 RobotDragon0 Trouble assembling 4WD chassis

Image: https://imgur.com/gallery/6rRUQpF
I am trying to build a simple robot using this 4WD chassis I got from DigiKey: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/seeed-technology-co-ltd/110090263/10290284?_gl=1*1n0npxv*_up*MQ
The question I have is basic, but when I try connecting the motor to the chassis using the bottom hole as shown in the image, I have difficulty because there is not enough room for me to turn the nut that goes at the end of the screwdriver.
I was wondering what I could do to resolve this issue. I was told I was supposed to turn the screwdriver instead of the nut instead. Is that correct? Because when I tried that, I couldn't get the nut to tighten.

Head fans some recommendations
Hi I’m a couple hundred bucks into fans at this point and wanted to share my final selection and some considerations. The main considerations were size, air flow in CFM, static pressure, operating voltage and noise.
I selected 5v as there’s a wide selection of rechargeable battery packs available. I will have two fan exhausting (one in each ear) and one mini blower in the muzzle. All will be switchable. I’ve constructed my head base and inner lining in a way that allows air to be drawn through the muzzle and eyes and around my head then out the ears. I’ve even made small ports above my human ears that should allow air to be drawn across them.
This requires some soldering and heat shrink, which really isn’t that hard if you look up some tutorials. The fans, cables and misc parts are from Digi-Key the battery packs are from Amazon. The small pack (red) will run these fans for around 15hrs, the larger black one will run for about 24hrs which is overkill, bit that paw that lights up, I mean battery beans 🥹!
Around 4500 rpm and 25dB is about the best compromise I could find for noise with decent air flow for the standard fans for the ears. These are 9.2 CFM each. I did purchase others in range which emitted an unpleasant frequency, which is why I’ve included part number for the winners (in the pictures).
The muzzle blower is running at 2.9 CFM and anything past this was too much wind and noise across your face. Static pressure comes into play but I don’t want to over complicate this. Minimally you can look up the part and use the specs to assist in your selections.
As a final note of caution, lithium ion batteries can experience thermal runaway and combust if overcharged or damaged. This is something to be aware of and you can use standard batteries but this will drastically reduce operating time. Your phone and most devices have Li-ion batteries and these battery packs should have proper overload protection to contain and prevent this. Just be careful.
I hope this information is useful
