Booking the WWE until Wrestlemania 41 Part 2 (lead-up to MiTB)

2024.06.06 20:35 Different_Bedroom942 Booking the WWE until Wrestlemania 41 Part 2 (lead-up to MiTB)

Welcome back to the series. We have no time to waist as we left off on some qualifying matches.
Link to part 1: https://www.reddit.com/fantasybooking/comments/1d4pocc/booking_the_wwe_from_clash_at_the_castle_to/MiTB
Qualifying Matches for Smackdown 6/21
Montez Ford vs Shinsuke Nakamura: This match delivers the first steps to something a lot of WWE fans want, a Montez Ford singles run. Unfortunately, the burying of Shinsuke Nakamura continues as Montez Ford picks up the win
Indi Hartwell vs Naomi: In a pretty unevenful match, Indi Hartwell continues to not be able to get off the ground of the WWE by herself, and it's a pretty easy win for Naomi
Piper Niven vs Tiffany Stratton: This match absolutely delivers. Fresh off a loss at Clash at the Castle, Piper comes in hot and delivers the heavy blows to Stratton. As the match nears it's end, Piper is able to get Stratton on her shoulders for a Power Bomb off the top ropes to finish, but as she goes for it, Stratton slips out of it, causing Piper to hit the ground hard. Stratton bounces off the ropes and hits her with a kick to the face, knocking her down. Stratton then goes to the corner and hits the Prettiest Moonsault Ever and picks up the win.
Carmelo Hayes vs Bobby Lashley: The fued that was meant to start at King of the Ring kicks off here in this match. It's intense, with both men pretty bloody after the battle. Near the end, Lashley looks to finish things off with a nasty spear, and goes for the cover, but Melo kicks out at 2. Lashey then tries to finish it again with another spear, but Melo moves out of the way and hops on the top rope for the Nothing but Net, and as he goes for it, it's Lashley who grabs him and hits him with a Dominator, as in one of the most shocking (and disappointing) finishes in a while, and Bobby Lashley, along with Montez Ford, Naomi, and Tiffany Stratton all qualify for MiTB.
Raw 6/24: A bunch of stuff happened on last weeks Raw that we need to discuss, but first, Authors of Pain and the Creed Brothers are fighting for a shot at the title held by Awesome Truth at MiTB. The match is normal up until the end, when the Authors of Pain start to take over. Akam and Rezar both nail Julius Creed. Akam, the legal man, continues to pound away at Julius, and Rezar goes to make sure Brutus Creed can't interfere. After Julius Creed is hit with a hard powerbomb, Akam makes the cover, but it stopped at 2, not by Brutus Creed, but by none other than Chad Gable. Gable pulls Akam out of the ring and starts destroying him, and it's not long until Akam is down and ends up getting pinned, and we officially have our first match of MiTB with The Creed Brother vs Awesome Truth for the World Tag Team Titles. Next up is Zoey Stark vs Ivy Nile in a MiTB qualifier, and once again, Chad Gable gets involves and distracts Zoey Stark, and Ivy Nile rolls up Stark for the win, and things continue to go great for the Creed Brothers.
We then get to the other fallout from last weeks raw starting to pay off, as the Judgement Day, now with no Dominik Mysterio, come out. Damian Priest tells everyone that "there are no games with the judgement day", and vows that Finn and JD are going to win the tag titles from whoever wins at MiTB. But something feels off. They aren't as close as they were before. The once cocky and smiling Finn Balor looked resentful, and JD wasn't super into it either. There is very clearly tension between the three as they end the segment. However, not soon after is Dominik Mysterio, who talks to the crowd after his removal from the judgement day. He says that "He just want's Mami back", and thats when Liv Morgan's theme hits. Liv explains to Dom that "she can be his new Mami", and tells Dom that Rhea was behind the decision to kick Dom out of Judgement Day. This strikes Dom hard, and he just walks off. Liv looks confident, but is then jumped by Iyo Sky. As that ends, another qualifying match happens, and it's meant to by Dominik Mysterio vs Dragon Lee. However, Dominik will not come out. He just wont do it, as he can't show himself after this whole Mami situation. Kind of like how Jey Uso replaced Damian Priest, Jey Uso replaces Dom, and its Jey Uso who (again) wins a replacement match. I should mention that Dragon Lee is partially costed by Carlito walking out, but Carlito doesn't directly get involved. Jey Uso qualifies.
Later in the night, the final promo before the last 2 MiTB qualifying matches this Raw, we have a promo for the IC title, with Sami Zayn running out. Early into his promo, Otis, with a new theme, walks out. Otis and Sami Zayn share a moment with each other. As they discuss Chad Gable, out runs Big Bronson Reed, and he isn't even looking for a match for Sami anymore, or at least, that can wait, as he wants Otis. Remember, Otis cost him the match at KoTR, and even though Bronson Reed already beat Otis, he want him again. However, then, out comes Ricochet, who looks to also challenge for the IC title. But like normal with these, someone else runs out, and we have a standoff between Sami/Otis, Bronson Reed, Ricochet, and now Chad Gable. They all have a standoff but don't go after eachother. Yet.
MiTB Qualifying Matches:
Jey Uso def Dragon Lee and Ivy Nile def Zoey Stark
Dakota Kai vs Zelena Vega: Ill keep these brief as its getting long, so in short, Dakota Kai, with the help of Damage CTRL, picks up the win.
Karrion Kross vs Xavier Woods: This one is a little more intense. All you need to know is that Karrion Kross wins, and tells Xavier Woods "nothing will change until you toughen up and drop that new day shit."
So far, Jey Uso, Bobby Lashley, Montez Ford, and Karrion Kross have qualified for the men, and Naomi, Dakota Kai, Ivy Nile, and Tiffany Stratton have qualified for the women.
Smackdown 6/28: To put it simply, Smackdown isn't all that exciting. There are a few promos, but really only 7 things come out from this. 1. While it's small, it's clear the Angelo Dawkins is a little salty about not getting a MiTB shot and thinks it should be him instead of Montez, but he never directly says anything. 2. Cody Rhodes cuts a promo against Andrade and they sign the contract for MiTB, giving the second official match between Cody Rhodes and Andrade for the Universal Championship. The third, and the biggest in promos, is from Randy Orton, who tells Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa that they need to "settle this once and for all". Kevin Owen is then dragged out by Solo, who tells Randy Orton that if he want's to settle this at MiTB, he needs a third partner. Now on the MiTB Qualifiers.
MiTB Qualifiers:
Tegan Nox vs Chelsea Green: Tegan Nox, who hasn't been present on TV very much, unfortunately falls victim to Piper Niven, who takes all her anger out on her. Chelsea Green doesn't have to do very much to pick up the win.
LA Knight vs Austin Theory: Austin Theory specifically doesn't want Grayson Waller out there in his match, as he want's LA Knight 1v1. With the tag titles recently lost, Austin Theory looks to embarrass Knight, and it goes horribly, as he just gets embarrassed, but Grayson Waller comes to help, and that too backfires, as he pretty much puts the nail in the coffin for Theory after accidentally hitting him instead of LA Knight. LA Knight advances.
Blair Davenport vs Candice LeRae: In her first non squash match on the main roster, Blair Davenport shines. Candice LeRae does everything she can, but its Blair Davenport who picks up the win.
Tonga Loa vs Baron Corbin: Still looking to shine, Corbin tries to win the MiTB, but he's fighting the bloodline. It's not long until Tama Tonga and Solo get involved. However, to the rescue comes Randy Orton and Kevin Owens, and it frees up Corbin to hit the End of Days on Tonga Loa and pick up the win.
Raw 7/1: With a wild Raw last week, things are starting to die down. Bron Breakker returns and picks up a win against poor poor Akira Tozawa, who doesn't really know where to go after alpha academy blew up. We then get into great fight between Finn Balor and Ludwig Kaiser, and it's close. Neither Gunther, who this entire time has just been talking smack, nor the Judgement Day come out. However, its Finn Balor who picks up the win against Ludwig Kaiser, who doesn't understand why Gunther didn't come out to help, but he just keeps it in the back of his head. Finn Balor qualifies. While we don't see them live on stage or in a promo, there is a moment where you can catch Liv Morgan leading Dominik Mysterio away, and seemingly JD McDonaugh. The interviewer tries to catch up with JD, but cant. Then she talks to Ricochet about his match tonight, but then out comes Damian Priest, who is starting to lose it. Liv Morgan later is attacked by again by Iyo Sky, and backstage, they decide to make the match official for MiTB, and now, our 3rd official match will by Liv Morgan vs Iyo Sky for the Women's World Championship. Next up, Kiana James takes on Shayna Bazler in a very brutal match, but ultimately its Kiana James who picks up the win. Later, it's her rookie babyface counterpart Lyra Valkyria wins against Asuka. Next is a promo that is kind of sad, as we see Xavier Woods seriously start to consider what Karrion Kross said at the end of their match last week. We then get to the IC title promo, and Chad Gable, for the first time, is accompanied by the Creed Brothers. He has a match against Kofi Kingston, in which he wins, and Xavier Woods get more and more doubt in his mind. Then is the WHC promo, which follows Damian Priest as he struggles with everything. He cuts a promo, trying to keep it cool, and then people come out. It's not just one, as Drew comes out, then out comes Gunther, then its Jey Uso, and then we even see Braun Strowman. However, it's all overshadowed as a booth, see CM Punk chirp up, and immedately, Drew McIntyre is gone to go get him. The tensions then get high, with Strowman going for Gunther, and Priest slips out of there. We end the night with the final qualifying match for MiTB between Ilja Dragunov vs Ricochet. The match is an absolute banger, but with a Torpedo Moscow followed by a super h-bomb, Dragunov picks up the win. However, before the night is over, Shayna Baszler and Zoey Stark are seen backstage, ready to head to smackdown to claim their match against Jade and Bianca for MiTB.
Dragunov, Balor, Kiana James, and Lyra all advance to MiTB.
Smackdown 7/5: With the MiTB matches set, its really just promos, apart from a few set matches. We get out 6th set match for the card with Shayna Baszler and Zoey Stark vs Jade Cargill and Bianca Belair for the Women's Tag Titles. With only 1 more match to go, we know 5 of the 6 competitors, and in a promo, we see Solo Sikoa ask Randy who the final partner is. All Randy does is look at Solo and smile, which causes both Solo to be confused, and it causes Tama Tonga to just attack them, and another brawl ensues. The match is officially set as Solo Sikoa, Tama Tonga, and Tonga Loa take on Randy Orton, Kevin Owens, and a mystery opponent. The rest of Smackdown is really just promos, with the biggest being that Tiffany Stratton declares that she will win MiTB and use it to cash in to Bayley, and she says it to her face. And with that, we get to the official MiTB PLE.
Originally, I had both the lead-up to MiTB and the actual card, but as I'm writing the PLE, I'm realizing that having them both in here is going to make it way too long, so I'm going to split them and (hopefully) post the MiTB PLE from this later tonight. Just know parts 2 and 3 were connected, so if things feel weird, thats probably why. I originally thought this series would take around 10-15 parts, but I'm realizing were going to probably hit the 20s if not the 30s, so I hope you enjoyed, and until later tonight, PREPARE FOR THIS YEETDOWN

Strawberry shortcake part of June in ‘good old days’

By GRACE SAMUELSON
All of a sudden it’s June, and things are crowding in on us all at once — weddings, showers, graduations, gardening, vacations, summer sports and barbeques. But when I was growing up family barbeques were unheard of.
Sometimes we’d cook wieners or toast marshmallows over an open fire, but no one had an outdoor grill, at least not until about the thirties. Then, it was likely to be an outdoor fireplace in the back yard. Picnics usually started about Memorial Day and then there would be strawberry socials, ice-cream socials, Sunday School picnics and shortcakes. Shortcakes! How we looked forward to that!
We used to go out to Larkin’s to pick berries. You picked every other day; usually from 7 til 11 a.m., when the patch was all covered. For this job we were allowed to wear overalls since you crawled along between the straw-filled rows. You took the rows in turn, one on each side, but we were happiest when we got to pick on the “fertilizer” rows as they had the biggest berries.
Berries were usually ripened by the end of June — close to 4th of July — and then there was a wait before the cherries were ripe. Once in awhile, if it was very hot, we were permitted to go in swimming, in the afternoon and our modest bathing suits covered us well.

https://preview.redd.it/vsjbsxwbse4d1.png?width=922&format=png&auto=webp&s=9ef856084286175977b210b6b22b948ea2e70b6f
Mama always ordered a crate or two of berries and then it was a family project to sit out on the porch and hull them for canning or eating. No Certo then; the berries were cooked down, with equal amounts of sugar, and tested for jelling in a saucer.
We always hung around for tastes, and loved to watch the jeweled-colored jam being poured into the glasses, then covered with melted parafin. Mama canned some berries for sauce, too, and in our family we liked the sauce on our French toast.
Then, at least two meals a day during the season we had “berry dishes,” sugared, and with pour-cream — thick, yellow, and luscious. We hadn’t heard of cholesterol then, and didn’t worry about the richness. Mama’s shortcake was the baking powder biscuit kind; feather-light, and heaped with berries, and cream over the top. M-m-m-m!
I always thought Mama’s shortcake couldn’t be surpassed; that is, until I was married, and heard from Stanley how they had shortcake at home. And when I saw and tasted my mother-in-law’s shortcake I agreed-it WAS super. Hers was biscuit dough, too, but she made hers in the large sized cake pan, split the layers carefully, buttered them, piled berries and more berries on the first layer, topped that with the second layer turned cut-side up, so the juice would soak in; then more berries, and whipped cream.
Carried in on a huge blue platter, it was a sight to behold, and pure joy to eat. Once, when I entertained my circle out on the farm, Grandpa brought me a case of the huge berries from his patch on Strawberry Lane, and Grandma helped me serve shortcake to the group. Our own strawberry social.
At one time when we were growing up Mama thought it would be nice to raise bees. Papa had a sweet-tooth, and honey was always enjoyed. So she got a hive and learned how to handle the bees when they swarmed, and to get them in another hive. There were some old sayings — whether true or not, I can’t say, but we used to hear these jingles: “A swarm of bees in May is worth a load of hay. A swarm of bees in June is worth a silver spoon. A swarm of bees in July is not worth a fly.”
When the bees swarmed it was up to Mama — or someone — to dress in veiled hat, gloves, sleeves and overall legs tied close, and with a bellows-like gadget to smoke them and quiet the bees. But somehow it seemed that often when the bees swarmed Mama was at church and then Verna would don the bee-keeper’s garb, follow the swarm to tree, or wherever they flew, find the queen bee, and get her and the rest into the new hive. We stood by at a safe distance, wishing we were brave enough to do that.
June was a time for making chains with dandelion stems, or, holding a dandelion bloom under the chin, “to see if you like butter.” Time to lie on the grass and watch the clouds sail by. Then we used to see swarms of “Green Bay flies” everywhere — store windows plastered with them; the streets and sidewalks so covered they’d crunch under the cars or people’s feet. The real name, I guess, was May-flies, but for two or three weeks every summer you’d see folks picking them off the windows or street for fish bait. Mosquitoes had made their unwelcome appearance and we swatted and scratched. Spiders dropped down on us unawares, and we said they were bringing a message.
During the summer months we spent a good share of our mornings in the kitchen watching or helping Mama, as we took turns with upstairs or downstairs chores. One of the things that always fascinated me was her terms of measurement. When she was giving a “receipt” she’d say — a pinch of this, or a smidgeon of that — a scant, or a heaping tablespoon; butter, the size of an egg; a couple of shakes of flour — salt to taste — a pint of clabbered (sour) milk — a quart of flour — a little nutmeg — break two eggs in a cup and fill cup with sweet cream. Then, the tests — bake in an “afternoon” oven — (one that had been allowed to cool down after the heat used to prepare the noon meal.)
Cakes were tested with a broomstraw or toothpick; I used to watch Mama take a pan of yeast biscuits from the oven, separate a row, and with her finger, test to see if the dough would spring back from her finger. Then she’d dip a small piece of cloth in sugar water, brush it over the rolls for a lovely glazed top.
Squeaking was a test, too. Bread should turn out good if the dough squeaked when you kneaded it. Hair squeaked when it was really clean, while shampooing. We were always fascinated when Mama made boiled frosting to see the syrup spin a thread. When we made fudge we tested the candy to soft ball stage in a cup with a little cold water.
Some of the things we learned in Home Ec. we brought home to Mama. Most housewives made cream sauce, or cream gravy by mixing a little flour with water, stirring that into the milk, and adding butter — the size of a walnut. At school we were taught to cook butter and flour together, then add the milk, and stir till smooth. And we were taught the proper way to level off a spoon or cup of flour, and to be exact in measurements. Everything was made from scratch, so meals had to be started early enough.
When the garden was ready we might have peas or beans, or lettuce very day, since no one had freezers to take care of the surplus, and canning vegetables at home wasn’t advised, until about the thirties, when pressure cookers were on the market. But the fresh vegetables tasted so good we didn’t mind having them over and over. A favorite with green beans was what Mama called Slumgullion: beans, new potatoes and little onions cooked with a chunk of ham. We’d be sent down in the cellar to bring up a couple of eggs and a pitcher of milk, and Mama would stir up a cobbler, cottage pudding, or fruit-cup puddings in a hurry. It was almost as much fun to watch as to eat.
We hadn’t heard of vitamins but seemed to get them in our diet somehow. And we were open to the new methods as they came along. Our families discussed the merits of creamery or dairy butter. You bought bananas by the dozen, not the pound; we didn’t have hamburgers, but meat balls. I was so fond of those that Mama said she’d get extra meat so I could eat all I wanted, and it was almost a year before I could eat meat balls again.
And I remember a birthday party I went to when I was eight or nine, all dressed up in my checked linen dress, wearing white stockings and my patent leather slippers. We had homemade ice cream, and what was supposed to be a patriotic birthday cake, only it turned out to be a red, white and green cake. I heard the women discussing it, saying the egg yolk must have turned the blue sugar-coloring green. But it was a delicious, fluffy cake, with piled high frosting, and nine pink candles on top, even though the colors weren’t those of our flag.
When I tried to relate my good time at the party it seemed as if the other girls always broke in with some of their news. Finally, disgusted, I said, “Mama, make them stop butting out” and how they laughed at me. But I can recall debating whether it was “butt in” or “butt out.”
Mama’s forgetmenots and ferns grew thick around the north side of the house, and I’d sit on the outside basement steps and ponder why I always said the wrong thing. Mama didn’t allow any fighting and she always told us, “Never let the sun go down on a quarrel.” One day when I'd been over at Genevieve Jacobs’ all afternoon she wanted me to stay for supper. I was spunky. I said, “You never come and stay with me.” I flounced out of the house and down the street toward home. But I was facing into the sunset and Mama's rule haunted me. So I turned back and how they all laughed at me.
June is the month for Father’s Day. We hadn’t heard of Father’s Day when I was in school. So Papa didn’t get any special notice, but he was always special to us. A quiet, serious man with an unexpected spot of humor, but the precepts he taught us were the rules be lived by; security in the love of family; honest at all times; friendliness to everyone. “You can always be nice to people.”
He never promised us anything for doing a chore, but I can still hear him say, “Well, now, I think a little girl deserves something for doing such a good job on that lawn.” I loved to listen to the stories he made up about “Mamie-go-wan, in the North Woods.” But best of all, he was a FRIEND, and we were proud to call him Papa. And weren’t we lucky?

2024.06.02 04:59 EnumeratedWalrus Booking the Women's World Title After Rhea Ripley Part 1

Raw, April 8th, 2024

Liv Morgan pushes Rhea Ripley into a wall backstage. Rhea Ripley suffered a sprained AC joint in her shoulder which means she will need about three months to recover.
Liv Morgan Sucks.

Raw, April 15th, 2024

Adam Pearce addresses the WWE Universe and announces the injury to Rhea Ripley before stating a battle royal will take place the following week to crown the new Women's World Champion.
Rhea Ripley is nowhere to be seen on the show as she does not announce the injury herself, however we do get a segment backstage between Adam Pearce and Judgment Day. Damian Priest tells Adam Pearce he is making a grave mistake by forcing Rhea Ripley to vacate the championship, but Adam Pearce hears none of it. Pearce is adamant that the battle royal will take place and a new champion will be crowned. Priest tells Adam Pearce that he can call any woman on the roster a "champion," but there is no chance Rhea is going to hand over her belt without a fight.
Pearce, for his part, tells Damian Priest that he expects Rhea Ripley to show up to Raw next weeks and relinquish her title, for if she does not, then he may have to strip Damian Priest of his World Heavyweight Championship.
"Like it or not, I will have a championship belt in my hand by the end of Raw next week. I'll let your little group decide which title is vacated."

Raw, April 22nd, 2024

The Battle Royal takes place almost exactly as it did in real life. Becky Lynch wins the battle royal by last eliminating Liv Morgan.
After the match, Rhea Ripley's music hits and she comes out with one arm in a sling and the Women's Championship dangling from the other.
"Congratulations, Becky. You entered this battle royal with 13 other women and proved that you deserve this championship by beating each and every woman on the roster.... well, except for me....

...and one other woman."

Just then, Shayna Baszler blasts Becky Lynch from behind and locks in the Kirifuda Clutch before tossing Becky Lynch over the top rope. Shayna follows Becky to the outside and continues to beat her down until the two are separated by security.
Adam Pearce storms passed Rhea Ripley on the ramp and asks her what the hell she has done.
Rhea replies, "You wanted a champion, Pearce? I gave you a champion."
Shayna is escorted back up the ramp and passes Rhea. Rhea hands her the belt and Shayna holds the title high to close out the segment.

Rhea Ripley Exclusive Interview

In an exclusive WWE.com interview, Rhea Ripley is asked about her newfound alliance with Shayna Baszler. Rhea states that when she was climbing the ranks in NXT, Shayna Baszler was the toughest opponent she had to face. Even though Rhea suffered losses to the likes of Charlotte Flair and Iyo Sky, Shayna Baszler never failed to make Rhea Ripley hurt every time they stepped in the ring together.
And now, Rhea wants that same pain inflicted on every woman of the Raw roster.
Rhea states that Shayna Baszler is now a full fledged member of the Judgment Day and despite their storied rivalry in NXT, the two are now so close that they are practically sisters and Rhea believes Shayna is fully capable of defending the Women's title until Rhea is healthy enough to return.
"If you think the women's roster was in trouble with Mami on top, wait until you see what Auntie Baszler has in store for them."

Raw, April 29th, 2024

Becky Lynch arrives at the arena and makes a beeline for the ring. Bex takes a mic and tells the crowd she's been pissed off for a week and now she's calling out Shayna Baszler. Baszler does not come out right away so Becky Lynch continues, calling the attack last week bullshit and claiming the last time she faced Shayna Baszler one on one, Becky Lynch was pregnant and she STILL kicked Shayna's ass.
Shayna Baszler arrives with Judgment Day music and the Women's Championship dangling from her hand. Shayna admits Becky bested her at Wrestlemania 36, but much has changed in four years. Shayna has four more years of training while it seems Becky Lynch is only losing momentum. Shayna reveals Adam Pearce will not recognize her as the Interim Women's Champion but states if she makes Becky bleed just as she did four years ago, maybe she will finally give Adam Pearce something to recognize. At this point Shayna has entered the ring and Becky Lynch responds by headbutting her directly on the nose. Becky pounces on Shayna with strikes, forcing Shayna out of the ring, leaving the Women's title behind. As Becky raises the title above her head, Shayna looks on from the ramp laughing, blood dripping from her nose into her maw, staining the mouthguard.
Later in the night, Becky Lynch meets with Adam Pearce in his office and hands him the Women's title. Becky tells Pearce that she collected his bounty, that she got the title back for him, and now she wants him to make the match for Backlash, Becky Vs Baszler. Adam Pearce thanks Becky for her help and grants her request.

Backlash 2024

A big bienvenue from Lyons, France.
I struggled with posting on Reddit yesterday so I'm just going to try and hit the finish on each of the matches in this booking.
Becky Lynch tries for the Manhandle Slam but Shayna rolls through the Pumphandle and locks Becky in the Kirifuda. Baszler's arm is wrested on Becky's chin as the Lasskicker struggles to fight out. Becky reaches between her legs to pick Baszler's leg for the takedown but Baszler, anticipating this, takes ahold of Becky's wrist with one hand, executes a half nelson with the other, and drops Becky on her head with a Pumphandle Half-Nelson Suplex. Baszler holds the bridge and gets the pin.
Shayna Baszler defeats Becky Lynch to become the new Women's World Champion.

A Trip to NXT

I'm keeping Shayna Baszler off of King of the Ring partially because I switched the Becky match with the Bayley triple threat from Backlash in my headcanon, and partially because I don't want Shayna thrown from a roof.
So instead, in anticipation of NXT Battleground, Shayna Baszler ventures down to NXT where she participates in weekly squash matches to get several moves over. Over the next five weeks, Shayna picks up wins with the following moves:
At NXT Battleground, Shayna Baszler takes on Masha Slamovich in a rematch from their shoot fight at Bloodsport which Shayna wins by referee decision upon using her Pumphandle Half Nelson Suplex that she is now calling "The Queen's Suplex."
Meanwhile, at King of the Ring, Liv Morgan defeated Naomi to win the Queen's Crown to earn a title shot at Clash at the Castle.

Back on Raw

Shayna Baszler returns to Raw and we begin a storyline that makes it clear Shayna is a bit of an awkward fit in the Judgment Day. Shayna approaches her involvement as very businesslike and not as warm or personable as Rhea is with the likes of Dom, Finn or Priest. With this, there are several differences in reaction. Finn respects the business mentality and has no issue in keeping things professional; Damian Priest and Shayna constantly butt heads and argue, but it is also clear that Priest enjoys the challenge of working with Shayna and respects how easily she can dissect most of the women's roster; JD McDonagh thinks Shayna Baszler is hot and tries coming on to her at every opportunity...
And then there's Dom.
It's not Shayna's fault, she didn't ask for any of this or to fill this role, but Dom simply misses Mami. Dom is seen immediately leaving the scene whenever Shayna comes into frame and has a dreadful facial expression whenever attention is brought to Shayna as the group stands in the ring.
And Liv Morgan has apparently caught onto this.
Just as in real life, Liv Morgan is seen speaking to Dom backstage as tensions boil over between herself and Judgment Day. Liv openly gloats about injuring Rhea Ripley which angers all of Judgment Day and seems to infuriate Dominik as well.
On the go-home show to Clash, Shayna hatches a plot that sees JD and Finn kidnap Liv and bring her to the ring. Dom and Shayna follow the group and once in the ring, Shayna begins mercilessly stomping on Liv Morgan's head before drawing her up in the Kirifuda Clutch.
Just then, Finn Balor hands Dominik Mysterio a Police Grade, Smith and Wesson 16 Extendable Baton and Shayna instructs him to bash Liv over the head with it. Dom hesitates but grows with anger as Shayna yells at him, telling him this is the girl who broke his heart. This is the girl who sent Mami away. And with that, Dom rears back and strikes Liv in the stomach.
Liv collapses to the mat as Judgment Day leave with Dom in tow, but Dirty Dom cannot help but look back at Liv Morgan, crumpled in the ring alone.

Clash at the Castle 2024

Liv Morgan's music hits but she is nowhere to be seen. Shayna's music hits and the champion is out promptly with Dom and JD. Shayna taunts Liv for either missing her flight or being too cowardly to show her face in Scotland and demands the referee ring the bell and begin a countout. The referee counts to 7 before Liv's music hits once more and out she comes....
... and Liv has brought Hell with her.
Liv is armed to the teeth with a bulletproof vest, helmet and multiple weapons. Dom and JD race into the aisle to restrain her but Liv electrocutes JD with a cattle prod and maces Dominik with pepper spray. Shayna rolls from the ring and grabs a Kendo Stick to defend herself and strikes at Liv but the bulletproof vest stops the force. Liv headbutts Shayna with the helmet and picks up the Kendo Stick herself, swatting at Shayna through the crowd until Liv finally knocks Shayna out on a table with another stiff headbutt with the helmet. Liv then climbs to the balcony and dives off with a Splash, sending Shayna through the table and ending the segment.
The match is thrown out as a No Contest but it is clear there is still bad blood between Liv and Shayna that must be resolved. On the following Raw, Liv Vs Shayna is made official for Money in the Bank per Shayna Baszler's request, but under Liv's request the match will be held under Street Fight rules.
P.S. Apparently Liv and Shayna have had a TON of street fights on house shows last year. Who knew?

Money in the Bank 2024

Liv comes out in the Riott (haha) gear and Shayna is dressed in a standard Gi. Shayna begins the match by systematically dismantling Liv's gear and stripping her of the helmet and bulletproof vest. Shayna continues to lay in strikes until Liv gets the upperhand by blasting Shayna with a fire extinguisher from under the ring.
Liv would continue to fight back with a Kendo Stick until JD and Finn Balor would get involved, however, Liv dispatched of them quickly by tasing JD and bashing Finn off the apron with a riot shield, sending him through a table at ringside. Here, Shayna would take control by attacking Liv from behind, just as Dominik Mysterio would make his presence known in the ring. Dom, carrying the Smith and Wesson baton, is instructed by Shayna to strike Liv in the head to end the match. Shayna pulls Liv into the Kirifuda Clutch and tells Dom to end it. Dom swings...
AND LIV DUCKS! DOM STRIKES SHAYNA IN THE HEAD!
Shayna falls to the mat in a heap as Dom drops the baton in shock. Liv snatches the baton while Dom is distracted and begins leveling him with numerous shots, sending Latino Heat Jr. out of the ring. Liv grabs the riot shield and goes to the top, coming down on Shayna hard with a shield-assisted Splash.
1.
2.
KICKOUT BY SHAYNA!
Liv is despondent and begins to cry in frustration, but she then rolls out of the ring and produces a sack from underneath the ring. Coming back in, Shayna is dazed and just about to her feet as Liv empties the contents, littering the ring with thousands and thousands of thumbtacks. Shayna grimaces in disgust before she and Liv start trading blows in the center of the tack filled ring. Shayna gets the better of Liv and goes for a Gutwrench Suplex only for Liv to land on her feet and execute a vicious Back Body Drop! Shayna cries out in pain as a hundred tacks pierce her back with Liv stalking her as she rises to her knees. Liv measures Shayna and his Ob-Liv-ion into the tacks but is slow to the cover after landing in the thumbtacks herself. Liv crawls to the cover when suddenly...

RHEA RIPLEY!

Rhea enters the ring and collects Liv before she can make the pinfall, grabbing her in a Pumphandle and dropping her right back into the tacks with the Riptide! Rhea then drags a dazed Shayna Baszler over top of Liv Morgan and the ref counts the stacked pin with Mami on top.
Shayna Baszler defeats Liv Morgan to retain the Women's World Championship.

Raw, July 8th, 2024

Rhea Ripley returns to Raw with Shayna Baszler and announces that she is cleared to wrestle. Rhea thanks the fans for their support and especially thanks Shayna Baszler for holding down Judgment Day in her absence and reigning as a phenomenal Women's Champion. However, Rhea states that she is ready to handle things from here and Shayna is no longer needed as Interim Champion. With that, Rhea extends her hand and asks Shayna Baszler to please return the Women's Champion to its rightful owner.
Shayna takes the microphone and tells Rhea it is good to have her back on Raw and she is glad she is healthy. Shayna thanks Rhea for her help at Money in the Bank and is happy she got some measure of revenge over Liv Morgan, and she closes by saying the following:
"Rhea, I love you like a sister, but if you want this title back you are going to have to take it from my cold, dead hands."
Rhea's expression falls as she and Shayna drop their mics, squaring up to each other. Rhea and Shayna exchange a few words off mic before Shayna fires the first shot and the two begin scrapping in the middle of the ring! Security rush down to ringside with Judgment Day as Dom and Priest help restrain Rhea and JD and Finn help restrain Shayna. The scene is utter chaos as Raw ends with both women fighting like hell to attack each other.

Raw, July 15th, 2024

Rhea Ripley stakes her claim to the Women's World Championship, citing the fact she never lost the title and Shayna was only ever made Interim Champion. Adam Pearce grants this, but only if Rhea can defend the title next week on Raw.

Raw, July 22nd, 2024

Rhea Ripley successfully defends the title against Liv Morgan. Rhea sells the shoulder after the match and is then attacked by Shayna Baszler. Shayna locks in the Kirifuda Clutch and Rhea fades in the ring despite rising to her feet multiple times, fighting the hold. Shayna stands over Rhea's prone body and says at Summerslam she will become the Undisputed Women's Champion.

Raw, July 29th, 2024

Rhea and Shayna are interviewed in separate locations via satellite as they both sign a contract for the match at Summerslam. Rhea says this is usually the part where she slams Shayna through a table but instead of that, she's going to save all of her aggression for Summerslam when she walks out the winner.

Summerslam 2024

Rhea makes good on her promise and starts the match out hot with Shayna, dropping her early with a big boot and hard Irish whip into the corner. Shayna rolls out of the ring and Rhea follows, launching her into the barricade and bashing her head off the ringpost before bringing her back into the ring. A small cut has formed above Shayna's right eye and Shayna looks dazed as Rhea tackles her in the ring and throws a number of punches to the head. The referee pulls Rhea off after a warning and Rhea yells out to the crowd to thunderous cheers. Shayna stumbles to her feet and Rhea levels her with a pair of dropkicks before bridging her into a 2 count with a Northern Lights Suplex.
Rhea sends Shayna back into the corner but Shayna kicks out Rhea's leg, sending her into the middle turnbuckle. Shayna takes over with a series of well placed strikes before locking Rhea in an Armbar, but Rhea fights to her feet and hits a Riptide!
1.
2.
Kickout by Shayna!
Rhea shows some frustration and looks to the corner, remembering what it took years ago to beat Shayna Baszler in NXT. Rhea carries Shayna with her to the turnbuckle and lifts her to the second rope. Rhea sits herself on the top and prepares to lift Shayna for the Avalanche Riptide but Shayna is fighting back with back elbows. Shayna has the upperhand now and turns to face Rhea head on. Shayna headbutts Rhea twice before sinking her teeth directly into Rhea's forehead. Rhea cries out in pain as a close up camera shot shows a line of blood dripping down! Shayna Baszler has just busted Rhea Ripley open with her teeth! Shayna hops down back into the ring and takes Rhea's leg out from under her, slamming her back first into the top turnbuckle. Rhea flops down into the ring, still horrified by Shayna's primal tactics as Shayna draws her up and plants her with the Queen's Suplex right into a Kirifuda Clutch. Rhea hangs on and even manages to rise to her feet, only for Shayna to plant her with a second Queen's Suplex. Shayna locks in the Kirifuda once again and Rhea Ripley passes out.
Shayna Baszler defeats Rhea Ripley to become the Undisputed Women's World Champion.

I DON’T LIKE MY MOM
Gitu Mengesha - Personal Statement
Mami and I had one thing in common; we didn’t like each other. Not the form of mutual dislike that some found tolerable, but the kind that insufferably enough, could’ve driven us to kill each other.
I was four when I came to this country, chubby with bug eyes and a forehead so big it had my classmates gawking and making jokes. But settling in wasn’t a problem. I learned English, began eating junk food during Tsom, and wore jeans instead of Zurias to family events—sooner or later I became your all-American girl.
But my thick-skinned mother made her Ethiopian heritage her whole personality. Never leaving the house without a netela, only allowing the family to speak in Amharic, and decorating our home in Ye’sus crosses.
Mami had me baking Injera in the hot steam and stirring a pot of onions to make Doro Wot. I didn’t have the privilege to enjoy my youth, instead I worked at my mother's Market front register. On top of school and other activities, I worked 30 hours a week. Zero pay.
She thought she was doing me a favor, and I despised her for it. It felt like I was rotting away in a cell, entrapped by a culture I wanted nothing to do with. Dissociation became my escape. Music, video games, and movies helped me achieve isolation. When I had my headphones in, my eyes glued to a screen, I was able to run away from my reality.
I developed a passion for poetry from my dissociation. Writing or reading became my only form of solace—it took up so much of my time that it became an integral part of my identity. Film For Her, Sia Martinez, Poet X, and countless other works inspired me to celebrate being from a culture no one understands, from being a woman who takes pride in being herself.
In a documentary project, I bravely recorded Mami baking Injera. I was so used to seeing the routine so many times that I thought nothing of it. But seeing it through a camera lens opened my eyes, and I discovered the ire on her face as she rolled the grill with tightened muscle. She breathed through her nose as the steam hit her face. Each time she spilled the batter against the grill, I caught a glint in her eyes. It was then that I asked myself how she must’ve felt, repeating that routine for years, just scavenging by as she cooked her skin in the heat, making hundreds of pieces of injera every day.
I assumed it was her stubborn behavior that drove us apart. But I realized I was too angry at the reality she didn’t choose to notice I was the problem. I wanted something she couldn’t understand, and like a bull locked on a red flag, I was willing to destroy everything in my path to get it.
We didn’t like each other because we didn’t know who we were. But through those lenses, I discovered who she was, and I realized she was once a girl like me too. She grieved the joy she could’ve had if she had stayed back home, but in the end, she stayed here. For me.
There was growth in my mother's flaws. Our disagreements continue over contrasting views of a life she dreams of and a life I despise. But our words don’t hit like fists, nor do they leave scars in their post. I’m sure that one day we can see each other and smile at our differences, that I can be okay with only speaking in Amharic in the house and practicing Tsom, and my mother could be okay with me holding hands with a girl.
A naive wish brightened through a memory that stuck with me—my mother holding my hands as we walked through the gates of Laguardia, in a new country. I remember her sweet whisper. Iwedishalehu.
Love was better than disapproval.

DRAG RACE!
Chronologica struts the runway wearing a green ankle leather strapless dress, red pearls around her neck and a blue beehive wig.
Hello world!
Welcome to Drag Race.
Lupe, Mami, are you excited for the dance challenge?
“Darling, I LOVE to dance!” Lupe shakes her chest. “Woo!”
Chronologica laughs.
Floss, are you a dancer?
“God no, my category was FACE.” Floss smirks.
What about you, Rachelle?
“Damn yes. I was body, body, body…” Rachelle winks.
For our Challenge, our racers were tasked with performing their ass of as Vegas Showgays!
And on the runway, they’ll be wearing their Casino Royale Best!
It’s TIME!
~
Category is… Casino Royal!
Anne Dior Kashaut arrives wrapped in a suit jacket that reflects the pattern of a casino poker table, with a mini dress made out of poker chips. She wears a long, flowing blonde wig, and stomps the stage with a fire in her eyes.
“I love this take.” Lupe whispers to Rachelle.
Mrs. Vicki Anderson spins onto the main stage in a 1920s Flapper Look, wearing a headband and fringe mini dress. Dancing around the stage doing the foxtrot, Vicki kicks her feet around with a smile, excitedly moving.
Keep on dancing… poorly!
Rachelle chuckles.
Ethan Angel-Eye enters the stage wearing an Apache Beaded warrior look- with feather and fringe, as he slowly moves through the stage, his eyes transfixed on the judges. As he arrives at the end of the stage, he tears his outfit apart- revealing a boring business suit, as he stomps off the stage serving executive male.
Ethan Angel-Eye: “This is a look for my Native class traitors, men who sell their culture to become ‘The Man’. I hope you know that selling out your communities to the white men will never fulfill you like your culture does.”
Molly Moppit jumps onto the main stage in a Poker Attendant look, dressed in a suit jacket, white shirt and flared pants, she holds a bag full of poker chips that she counts as she walks through the stage. As she makes her way to the end, Molly drops her bag- picking it up as thousands of ‘MoDollars’ pour out of her pants.
“Where’s the chips…” Floss looks around suspiciously. “They’ve gone from her hand. GET HER!”
Carly Shay Jepsen arrives straight out of a James Bond film! Wearing a suit that is probably a few centimeters too small for her, Carly holds a martini glass in her hand, and pads down her massive, non-lace front wig with a smile.
Casino… Royale indeed.
Francesca La Fataliá struts out in a deep purple silk dress, her hair spun into black buns with multiple layers of gold littered throughout it. She wears a fur coat, carrying a bunch of faux ‘Euros’ as she counts her money, walking through the stage.
“She’s spending MONEY, honey.” Lupe smiles.
Twirling onto the stage, Lady Gag arrives serving her best ‘Poker Face’- with an exact recreation of Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’ music video, with the glittering mask, a black jumpsuit and studded look as she stomps the main stage.
RedOne.
“Gaga…” Rachelle sighs.
Niagara Halls arrives in a gold lace dress, her hair serving bundle upon bundle of scarlet red hair, as she spins onto the main stage with an excited flair, touching her expensive dress with a smirk on her face, purring around.
“Category is GOLD.” Floss snaps her fingers.
Wearing a backless aubergine purple slink dress, with a diamond end to the gown, as Shayla Moon is giving her best ‘Vesper Lynd’ dress up, wearing a short black wig as she stalks through the stage, a pistol in her hand.
“This is so good!” Lupe snaps her fingers. “Perra.”
Nakomis Lotus arrives dressed an Egyptian Queen, serving Cleopatra realness with a beaded wig and a literally Pyramid- the Luxor as her dress, she floats around the main stage with a , walking like an Egyptian.
I wonder which hotel she’s at!
Lokii steps onto the runway in a boxy slot machine costume, with the slots showcasing a triple Seven! Lokii spins down the runway, revealing that “Slut Machine” has been written just above a small hole in the back of the machine.
“Cute.” Lupe smiles.
HerShe Kiss enters the stage in a massive white, red and black Elizabethan era ballgown, with bright red hair with her face painted white like she’s the literal Queen of Hearts, as she holds a card- a Queen of Hearts with the actual version of herself.
“OFF WITH RACHELLE’S HEAD!” Floss says in a british accent.
Rachelle gasps.
Shiseido Red is a vision, her look at first glance, entirely compiled gold coin- wearing a structure that is similar to a slot machine, with coins pooling out of her head, flowing down to the ‘bottom’ of the outfit. Suddenly, the handle moves down and Shiseido hits the ‘Jackpot’- with confetti bursting from her outfit.
She’s getting lucky tonight.
~
Hi Racers.
Before I’ve made some decisions….
Ethan, will you be using your immunity potion tonight?
“No.” Ethan stares at Chronologica.
Francesca, will you be using your immunity potion tonight?
“Not tonight, Chronologica.” Francesca nods.
Team Francesca La Fataliá.
You all…
Are safe.
The 4 nod.
You may untuck in the Bronze Lounge with Princess Papaya Cocktails.
“Bronze?!” Niagara gasps. “Just say losers!”
Chronologica laughs.
~
The 4 racers enter the Bronze Lounge.
Francesca La Fataliá: “To be safe isn’t concerning. I am satisfied with this. I felt confident enough- which is why I didn’t use the immunity potion.”
“Well, I kinda HATE this.” Niagara says, picking up her drink, before sitting down on the seats in a dramatic fashion, puffing her lips out.
“Girl.” Carly laughs. “What’s going on?”
Niagara bursts into tears.
Carly, Francesca and Nakomis all look deeply confused.
“I really just- I know I fucked up, and honestly, it’s just lame, and I really do want this. My titles- I don’t have many, if we’re being honest..” Niagara starts.
“Oh, this makes sense.” Nakomis nods, whispering under her breath.
“I was focused on me planning, executing and like, like, like DELIVERING, you know?” Niagara sighs. “And I wanted to lead, and I know I VOUCHED for it, like-” Niagara rolls her eyes, looking at Francesca. “Whatever.”
“I-” Francesca starts.
“I just want to prove myself.” Niagara says, more tears beginning to fall. “I’m not ugly and weird and maybe they want that after a pretty girl like Nymphe winning-”
Carly covers her mouth in an effort to stop herself from laughing.
Carly Shay Jepsen: “GIRL, she’s so fucking FUNNY!”
“But you know what? I don’t want to be ugly. I want to be pretty and I WANT this! I want it, you know?! AHH!” Niagara cries, sobbing into a pillow.
“Niagara, you need to stop with the crying.” Francesca rips the pillow away from her face. “You did a good job this week.”
“Wait, what?” Niagara says, confused as she wipes a tear with her long, blue nails.
“I do actually believe you worked hard, and led our team to a victory, of sorts. We all performed well- and your work ethic is something that surprised me. Clearly, you want this, and we can all see it. Well certainly, I do believe that.” Francesca says. “And I’m almost always right.”
Carly smiles. “Honestly, yeah, girl. You really helped out.”
“I actually do not believe myself to be a performer.” Nakomis says. “Not to reveal my weak spots!” Nakomis jokes. “But you made us come together, and put something solid.”
“I-” Niagara smiles. “Do you guys really think so?”
“Yes.” Francesca nods. “Don’t be annoying about this again.”
Niagara smiles, before transitioning into a smirk. “God, I'm such a STAR.”
The others laugh, as Francesca rolls her eyes lovingly.
~
You represent the tops and bottoms of the week. Starting with…
Team Ethan.
And our leader!
Ethan stands tall.
“Hello.” Ethan nods.
“I loved you.” Lupe smiles. “What a character you are!”
“I am not a character.” Ethan says gruffly. “I am me.”
“Well…” Lupe smiles awkwardly. “You performed really well. This look, darling, it had a nice message, a good idea, and I believe you worked well.”
“I do agree-” Rachelle starts. “However, you did get outshined by others, at times.”
Ethan nods.
“Why didn’t you pick the front and center role?”
“I believed i’d stand out regardless, and I had the capability to do so.” Ethan adds.
“In this case… you let others stand out- moreover, Ms Moon.” Rachelle says.
Ethan looks annoyed.
Ethan Angel-Eye: “I’ve made a misstep. I am not pleased.”
HOWEVER… you did lead a team to a really solid performance. I think you should be proud of that?
Ethan nods.
“Agreed. This is still you work to get here, regardless- and that’s worth celebrating.” Rachelle adds.
And on that topic… Shayla Moon!
“WOW.” Floss smiles. “Tell me, then- you got a big role, opening the performance. Did you ask for the role?”
“Yes I did.” Shayla grins. “For me, it’s important to see big girls like us, showing we can do… the same things Miss Gag can do.”
Lady Gag eyes Shayla.
“What do you mean by US big girls?” Floss says, a glint in her eye.
The two chuckle.
“Baby, I am so happy you said that. And you did that. Because damn, you fucking KILLED IT!” Floss beams.
Shayla looks proudly.
And this look. It’s a great reference point, doing LITERAL casino royale. You should be proud of yourself. And you look hot.
“I know.” Shayla says, winking.
HerShe.
“Hiya.” HerShe stands elegantly.
You look gorgeous this week.
“Thank you.” HerShe smiles.
I really enjoyed the look, but on the main stage, you were the weakest of your group. You struggled in the choreo space- I don’t think you were actually BAD. You were just in a strong, strong group where everyone performed and ultimately, you were the weakest link in your group.
“I get that.” HerShe nods. “I do-” HerShe stops herself. “Nevermind.”
Shayla, Lady Gag and Ethan all look at HerShe.
Please HerShe, go ahead.
“I don’t think it’s appropriate.” HerShe says, frowning.
“Say it.” Ethan growls.
“I do believe Ethan’s dictatorial attitude limited my abilities. I asked for adjustments- he didn’t support that. It hindered me.” HerShe says.
“Let me make this clear.” Ethan steps forward. “HerShe failed on the basis of her abilities. I believe I am- and my team are collectively in the top. She was the weakest link- but collectively, we worked well. I lead a team to victory.”
HerShe looks uncomfortable.
“Lady Gag. Did I lead you well?” Ethan turns.
“I mean, yes-”
“Yes.” Ethan says. “Shayla?”
“...Yes.” Shayla says.
“Good. Moving onto Lady Gag critiques.” Ethan says, cutting forward.
…Okay.
Shayla Moon: “...Oh dear.”
HerShe looks as if she wants to close into herself.
Lady Gag.
“Hot.” Lady Gag smiles.
“You are very pretty.” Lupe starts. “And-”
“Thanks.” Gag flicks her hair.
“I wish you did something different, for this runway, though?” Lupe says. “To me, there was a lot more you could do… than Lady Gaga.”
“She’s wording it nicely, I won’t.” Rachelle starts. “I want to see more than Gaga. In fact, I need it. Your performance was good, I won’t lie. But I keep only seeing Gaga. I need Gag.”
“Well, Lady Gaga is Lady Gag.”
“If your brand is only another person, you won’t get far here.” Rachelle says, annoyed. “Show more, or go home.”
Lady Gag purses her lips.
Lady Gag: “Ok, bitch.”
Moving onto team…
“Me.” Molly puts her hand up.
“Die by the sword…” Shiseido whispers, tindering her breath.
Well, it was a shame to see, Molly.
Molly nods.
You not only struggled, but you lead a really poor performance, to be quite transparent.
“100%.” Molly says, nodding again.
The lack of dance skill was on show, and for me, you tried to cover it up with comedy…
“I tried, so hard.” Molly laughs.
“It wasn’t enough..” Rachelle frowns. “You have a FUN presence- but sometimes we don’t need to be funny- and kooky, and play up a shtick. I feel like- I know you have potential. But I need you to push yourself- and I see someone also being real here.”
“For sure.” Molly says. “I’m frustrated, but I want to be here.”
“Keep the fire. You don’t always have to be funny though, boo.” Floss looks at Molly. “Sometimes you need to just… SERVE.” Floss snaps her fingers.
“Will do just for you mama.” Molly blows a kiss.
Anne.
“Hello, judges!” Anne smiles.
“First, wow- you’re gorgeous, baby!” Lupe cheers.
“Oh, Lupe- Eres una inspiración, una luz, un faro de arrastre. Gracias.” Anne says with a bright smile.
“Oh…” Lupe blushes. “Thank you. You did lovely.”
“The Spanish was off.” Shayla whispers to Lokii.
“It was charming- you were a clear highlight in the group, and yes- it is a more literal take on the runway, but wow, did you deliver it!” Lupe looks excited. “Your drag is exciting. Keep shining.”
“I plan to!” Anne grins with an excessive smile.
Shiseido.
Shiseido looks on with pride.
“First of all, this look-” Rachelle shakes her head. “Insane levels of artistry.”
“Thank you. Not everyone can say they can do this.” Shiseido purses her lips.
“You have showcased something insane. This look is next level.” Rachelle says, looking at the outfit. “However… your dance performance was beyond poor.”
Shiseido looks at Rachelle.
“We’re not all spring chickens, and that’s okay- I see experience in your drag, clearly with your looks. But you were not good at all this week. Really- the dance was on show, and it wasn’t good. You actually looked in your head.”
“Mhm.” Shiseido says, looking displeased.
“I wanted to see so much more. But what I got- it was not great.” Rachelle sighs. “And an older queen can deliver. You don't need to move wildly. But it’s about clean, effective movements. That’s what it is.”
“Okay.” Shiseido responds.
Molly Moppit: “Red is pissed, you can tell. She’s mean mugging these judges.”
Shiseido looks straight ahead.
Lokii.
“Hi.” Lokii waves.
You failed to stand out. And for others here, I’ll say that’s a bad thing.
“Mhm.” Lokii nods.
But in this group, you were lucky. Because you fumbled somehow into the role of 4th worst. Or second best.
“Okay!” Lokii chuckles.
“You are cute.” Floss notes. “But, babe- I want a bit more than that. I want to be like- “Damn, yes that is the LOKII brand.” Floss looks at Lokii. “I do not know that yet.”
“Thank you.” Lokii says.
Shayla Moon: “I see Lokii is quite similar to me. But there’s a lack of confidence- experience? That’s a shame, because I think she’s cool!”
Finally, Ms Vicki A.
Vicki curtseys.
“Now, you did fail to stand out, Vicki- and then you did.” Rachelle raises an eyebrow. “You almost tripped.”
“I did, ahh!” Vicki gulps.
“I noticed.” Rachelle says, shaking her head. “Thus far, I am wanting a bit more from you. You’re cute, but I want what makes you stand out. What makes you different, Vicki?”
“I’m here to make the people smile, perform and lead with my heart.” Vicki grins.
“Okay.” Rachelle nods, holding up her notes looking slightly displeased.
Thank you, racers. Whilst we deliberate, you may untuck backstage in the Fae Lounge. Sponsored by Princess Papaya Glitter Blueberry Drinks.
~
The racers enter the Fae Lounge.
“WELL!” Molly yells, walking into the werkroom.
Molly Moppit: “I know the score. I heard the critiques. This is the way it goes. I fumbled the ball, and now I need to prepare.”
“As much as I’d love the screentime, I’m not talking to any of you, I’m going to go prepare for the lip sync, byeeeeeeee!” Molly utters, walking over to the mirrors.
“Oh.” HerShe nods. “Okay.”
HerShe Kiss: “I actually admire Molly. As a leader, she owned her faults. And now, no bullshit- she’s learning her words.”
The top and bottom racers all sit down, bar Molly, no one uttering a further word.
“…So, how does everyone feel?” Vicki says, trying to cut the tension. “I don’t feel amazing!”
“I don’t feel good, obviously, Vicki.” Shisedo starts. “If you can’t read the damned room. I don’t think much of us are.”
“I actually feel great.” Shayla laughs, trying to cut the tension.
“Same.” Lady Gag smirks, turning to Anne. “You also ate girl.”
“I know.” Anne smiles. “I am predicting the win.”
Shayla makes a face.
Shayla Moon: “I am not someone who believes themselves to be mean, by nature. I don’t like mean. But really, is Anne, with her generic drag and middle of the road performance, really expecting the win?” Shayla looks into the camera. “Oh my, cut that out, I sounded like a BITCH!”
“You’d deserve it, girl. You’re hot.” Gag smile.s
“I know.” Anne nods. “And honestly, the-“
“Can you both shut the fuck up?” Ethan says, annoyed.
“Who pissed in his suit?” Gag asks.
HerShe puts her hand up. “Ethan, if you-“
“HerShe, this isn’t about you. Calm down.” Ethan responds, not giving HerShe a chance to speak.
Ethan Angel-Eye: “I am damn frustrated at myself. I let Shayla outshine me. And that is what I am annoyed about.”
“I just don’t like any of this.” Shiseido shrugs. “And Molly, our leader is there, instead of apologizing for something I believe she should be, leading this team to failure-“
Shayla Moon: “I don’t get it. Molly DID own up to it. She’s now there, learning her words. Why are you complaining, Shiseido? Why aren’t YOU earning up to your own behavior?”
“It’s just ridiculous. It’s-”
Suddenly, the safe Queens enter the werkroom, as Carly cheers, holding a tray of lasagna. “What’s crackin?! Who wants MEAT?”
“….What is going on.” Shiseido raises her hands in disbelief.
“Whatever.” Shiseido stomps off, walking without a word. “I need a cigarette.”
“Let her sulk, like a child.” Anne says, before turning to whisper in Gag’s ear. “Honestly, I think Niagara has a good work ethic. She sews. Perhaps she can help us out in future? Maybe we can be friends with her? Or…” Anne says sarcastically. “Frieeeends…”
“Niagara BABE! Come sit with us!” Lady Gag waves Niagara over, as Niagara looks surprised.
Francesca raises her eyebrow as Niagara excitedly walks over.
“Is no one going to go say something…?” Carly points to the exit.
“She’s an adult.” Ethan responds.
“I don’t think I’d be any use…” Vicki frowns.
“I also need a cigarette, I’m Italian-“ Francesca says, looking at the camera. “Can I order an espresso?”
“Bitch, I’d love a coffee!!” Molly yells from the other side of the room.
Suddenly, a pit crew member walks in with a plate of deliciously appetizing Princess Papaya Espresso-Caffeinated Cocktails to Francesca’s disgust.
The racers start dividing into little groups to chat. Lady Gag, Niagara and Anne chat near the drinks.
“So, Niagara, girl.” Lady Gag smiles. “Like, you did really well.”
“I thought you’d win, actually.” Anne nods. “You lead your team like a true queen...”
“Oh…” Niagara says, surprised. “Gag, girl- like thank you, I didn’t expect this from you after week one, bitch. So to see the compliments from you-“
‘It’s SO deserved.” Anne smiles.
“I heard you sewed your own look this week too?” Lady Gag asks inquisitively.
“I did.” Niagara nods. “I do ALL my own looks, actually.” Niagara stops herself. “I thought I said that week one on stage?”
“I must’ve not been listening.” Lady Gag smiles. “But like, I’d love some tips. Maybe you could help us out?”
“You’re one of the girls.” Anne nods. “Like, one of us- the pretty dolls.”
Niagara Halls gasps. “I didn’t realize you were trans!”
“…Oh, I’m not.” Anne says.
Niagara nods in confusion.
“We can make the A.E. Girls look like weak losers if we band together.” Anne smirks. “I think.”
“…Oh, 100%.” Lady Gag leans into her seat with a smirk.
“…Werk.” Niagara nods.
Niagara Halls: “I want this WIN. And now, the opportunity to have allies? Of COURSE I’ll take it.”

“Please, dig into the Lasagna. I baked it myself.” Carly says to HerShe and Vicki, as Nakomis laughs.
“You can bake lasagna?” Nakomis utters under her breath in confusion.
“Oh, I can’t.” HerShe says with apprehension. “Too many carbs…”
“Fuck those carbs.” Carly laughs.
HerShe shakes her head.
“Now, HerShe- I must ask, are you okay?” Vicki frowns. “I know Ethan went quite tough on you..”
“Wait, what happened?” Carly asks, looking at the others.
“Did I miss a drag race herstory moment?” Nakomis frowns. “Nooooo!”
“It was just- I was trying to be open, and honest on the main stage. Ethan attacked me, verbally. At least it felt that way.” HerShe sighs. “But, I’ve heard worse. I must go forward. I must move forward.”
The others nod.
“What about you, Vicki?” HerShe asks. “I know the critiques were rough…”
“I love my drag.” Vicki smiles. “I love what I do. I love this art form. And if we struggle, that’s okay! I am still proud of myself.”
“That’s so sweet.” Nakomis looks at Vicki.
“Leading with light, always.” Vicki nods.
“I honestly do think, they’re not missing a chance for that Shisedo versus Molly Beef. You can cut that tension with a butter knife. You’ll be fine, girl.” HerShe says.
“I hope so.” Vicki nods.
HerShe Kiss: “Vicki feels like one of the REAL lights here. She’s just sweet. I want so much for her. She’s like… the one source of LIGHT here. She deserves the best.”

“You okay?” Shayla walks over to Molly, her hand on her shoulder.
“I’m okay.” Molly nods, before letting in a deep sigh. “I really do take this seriously.”
“I didn’t say youdon’t.” Shayla says.
“Like, sometimes, I get it, I’m fun- but this is my livelihood. I want this.” Molly looks at Shayla. “I need this, really.”
“You’ve got the words- give your all.” Shayla smiles. “That is all you can do.”
Molly Moppit: “I can feel myself being judged by some of these more “serious” entertainers, whatever that means, but I can’t let them dim my light. Never have, never will. I feel a fire to prove them bucktoothed clowns wrong- and even prove the judges when it comes to my performance skills! The Molly Moppit way, duh!”

Shiseido lights a cigarette, as Francesca walks outside.
“I’m not in the mood.” Shiseido says, not looking at her.
“I’m not here for you, I’m here for me.” Francesca lights her own cigarette.

The two inhale and exhale without uttering another word.

“Screw this.” Shiseido throws her cigarette.
“You’re scared.” Francesca finishes her cigarette.
“Damn right, I’m scared.” Shiseido snaps. “I’m double the age most of these bitches are-”
“Not an excuse.” Francesca responds. “As am I. I ate HerShe alive last week.”
“I wasn’t there, I wouldn’t know.” Shiseido responds, taking out another cigarette.
“Fags.” Francesca looks ahead.
“What?!” Shiseido turns to Francesca.
“Can I have one of your fags, idiot.” Francesca responds, her face giving a cheeky grin..
Shiseido rolls her eyes, before giving a half smirk, handing Francesca.
Shiseido Red: “She isn’t even british… what the fuck?”
“I don’t even know the words this week.” Shiseido says. “At all.”
“Well, how about you-”
“MAIN STAGE, RACERS!” A producer yells.
Francesca looks at Shiseido. “....Oh dear.”
Shiseido sighs sadly. “Time to face my fate.”
~
Welcome back, racers, I’ve made some decisions.
Shayla!
Shayla smiles.
This week, you danced your ass off, and Vegas is yours for the taking.
Condragulations, you are the winner of this week’s challenge.
“Ahhh!” Shayla cheers, as does most of the others.
Shayla Moon: “My first win! I promise this- it’s not my last.” Shayla winks.
Ethan readjusts himself, clearly bothered.
“Girl, I’m gagged it wasn’t you…” Anne whispers, leaning over to Lady Gag who nods.
Team Ethan, well done, you are safe.
Lady Gag: “I am fierce, mama. I am proud of myself, and that is what matters.”

Lokii.
Anne.
You are safe.
Lokii sighs in relief.
Lokii: “That was not a fun feeling.” Lokii exhales. “Okay, I’ve survived..”
Vicki, this week, you failed to stand out. Until you did, for the wrong reasons.
Molly, this week, you lead a team… to failure.
I’m sorry my dear, you are up for elimination.
Molly nods.
Shiseido, we want a LOT more than visuals. And this week, you bombed, HARD.

You are SAFE.
Everyone gasps, looking surprised, including Shiseido herself.
“Thank you judges.” Shiseido hurries off.
That means Mrs Vicki Anderson and Molly Moppit, I’m sorry my dears, but you are up for elimination.
The time has come… for you to lip sync to your life!
**I Should Be So Lucky by Kylie Minogue starts to play**
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3\_TvpBwSZDM
Good luck… and don’t fuck it up!
Molly Moppit: “Well, I didn’t expect to be here so quick! But, I’m a fighter, and a hustler. I’m not going down. I’m sorry Vicki, but I’m taking this lip sync win.”
Mrs. Vicki Anderson: “I am not a dancer, but I’m an entertainer at heart and I will be giving my best. A smile on my face, a groove in my heart- let’s tango!”
~
Next Time!
Racers, this week, you’ll be designing your own Dungeons and Drag characters- and a fierce main stage look!
“Niaaaagarraaa…” Lady Gag smiles. “Can you help?”
“I’m not helping you, Carly.” Francesca looks at an upset Carly with a stern glaze.
“AHHHHHH!” Carly yells. “I’ve stabbed myself!”
So, HerShe, can you make your own looks?
HerShe begins to sweat.

2024.05.26 21:38 siderealscorpio_02 Going NC with family? Is this petty?

Hi everyone. I'm 24F. Currently living out of pulau Jawa. Anak pertama, dan punya adik 14M.
Backstory: Right after high school, i took a gap year mainly because my family's finance was not good at all. Mom had numerous debt after my step dad passing in 2015. So i worked ever since i was 18, dari serabutan sampe akhirnya gue bisa dpt corporate job thn 2019. Kuliah sambil kerja (awal masih dibantu nyokap untuk bayar UKT, tapi semester 3 sampai gue lulus it was all me). Dan dari kerjaan serabutan gue pertama, sampai sekarang, I have always tried to give something to my mom. Dari nominal kecil sampe lumayan gede gue selalu share as my thank you.
Singkat cerita, setelah sekian lama enduring all the passive agressive from my family (mom and brother), gue dpt offer di luar pulau untuk kerja dan gue ambil tanpa mikir panjang karena gue udah segatahan itu dirumah. Giving money is one thing, being eldest daughter is another thing. Nyokap gue dititik kalo ngobrol sama gue gajauh-jauh dari duit. I could talk about the anything with her it will end up to her lacking of money. Even gue udh jauh dari rumah, isi chat kita garing, gada tuh nanya kabar gue gmn/kerjaan gue dan ujung2nya bakal ngomongin duit. And because I know her, that's her way of asking money. She never explicitly 'asking' for money from me, rather she will be passive agressive, atau kode2 gitu loh.
Mama cuma butuh kamu berbakti aja sama mama, cukup kok. Mama masih bisa sendiri kalo uang." Tapi gue gapernah dengerin dan gue ngerasa selama gue masih tinggal dirumah dia, gue harus bantu. Sampai akhirnya gue memutuskan untuk move out. I thought, this way it would be easier to say no, incase i do not want to give her any money (sorry gada uang/uang lg mepet abis). Ternyata engga cuy lol
Belum lg adek gue minta.Januari kemarin, adek gue dengan bodohnya nabrak orang. Iya umur 14 tahun dikasih motor dan diberi izin, nabrak anak kecil. Untung korbannya cm luka ga sampe meninggal. Nyokap gue nelfon gue, laporan.
> She said and I quote "Kamu tidak malu sudah mengambil jatah kasih sayang papa adek kamu? Dia anak yatim kasian gada yang sayang. Kamu dulu saat kecil dapat kasih sayang dari papa dia harusnya kamu malu. Kamu baru bisa ngasih yang tidak seberapa itu jangan harap bisa membayar pengorbanan yang sudah diberikan oleh ibu kamu ini."
(Context: never met my bio father, grew up with my step dad, im grateful he was a decent kind man. Step dad died when I was 15 and my brother was 5.
Gue gamau ngasih kalo ga ikhlas. Tapi gue dikejar-kejar seakan gue ada hutang sm mereka. Sampe dikirim video tentang anak durhaka halus karena mereka anggep gue ada uang tapi gamau ngasih. Padahal uang gue beneran abis dan gue udh blg ke mereka tanpa konteks gue abis jalan2. But they still kode2 pasif agresif.
I've had enough, gue tau mungkin yang gue tulis disini ga cover beberapa tahun gue menjadi sandwich generation di keluarga gue. All the mental I've had to go through. And I know I sound so selfish to have a desire to cut them off completely over this matter. But truth is, ini resentment built up dari dulu yang memang baru meledak sekarang. P.S Nyokap gue gamau remarry lg krn dia males, gue udh kasih restu kalau memang dia mau nikah biar ada yang provide untuk dia selain gue. Karena gue juga cm anak, bukan the man of the family.
  1. Apakah wise kalau memang gue truly go NC?
  2. Karena posisi gue ga dirumah, gue cm ada foto KK dan copy KK. Is this possible untuk pecah KK
  3. Are there other necessary steps if I'm going to NC with them?
All the help and comment will be appreciated. Thank you.

2024.05.12 15:20 missdevilishangel Sobrang random lang

(23F) Kung hindi ko pa mami-meet ang SO ko or maling tao na naman ang ibibigay sa 'kin, utang na loob huwag na lang. I am tired of being sexualized and fancied. I am aware na am not that super gorg pero may itsura naman, typical morena, about my body man lagi akong nakakatanggap na "hot" nga daw. At first, nafi-feel ko pa talagang compliment sya.

Dearly beloved, it's time for the judges' critiques.
Mayhem and Miasma Miller, the mug? Stamped! However, a few details pulled me out of the illusion; your partner's dress was shorter toward the bottom, which in turn made Miasma look shorter than she actually is. Also, the wig was constantly shifting to the side under the weight of the headpiece holding the veil.
Angele and Nathalida Anang, talk about family resemblance! You really know your way around a face illusion, and it shows. As for the dress, you took a risk and made the dress reveal into another; this attention to detail is something that can't be ignored! The other ladies need to watch out; you just might come and shake up the competition right at the end...
Tayce and Jayce, this was a beautiful red wedding look, but more could've been added. The shoes and beat are stunning, and the hair is laid, but there's just a little bit missing from the look that would've elevated it more. If you're gonna go for something different, take us all the way through.
Kelly Heelton and Nelly Heelton-Westwood, this is a step above what we've seen in the past from you, but still an overall disappointment. The fabric you chose isn't easy to work with, but the gown is slightly too big on Nelly, swallowing her up and making her trip a few times on the runway.
Alexis and Avals Mateo, muy caliente, mami! Alexis, you know how to make a garment work for you, and I can see the family resemblance! If I could change one thing, I'd take away some of the jewelry in order to focus on the craftsmanship of the dress.
Jasmine and Jessabelle Kennedie, in your case, the family resemblance with Jessabelle looks more like best friends who kinda look alike when you squint your eyes. I'm not sure what the vision was for the dress, but I don't think it was met. There's feathers, flowers, bows, and a whole lot of hot glue.
Racers, I've made some decisions.
Tayce, you're safe.
Alexis Mateo, great job this week. You're safe.
Angele Anang, once again, you've blown us away, and I think I'll say, "I do!" Condragulations, you're the winner of this week's challenge.
Jasmine Kennedie, this wedding should've been done at the courthouse, because what you presented was surely punishable by law. I'm sorry, my dear, but you are up for elimination.
Mayhem Miller, your look tonight left some of the judges in objection.
Kelly Heelton, your wedding dress needed some edits, and you were warned last week to impress us. I'm sorry, my dear, but you are also up for elimination.
Mayhem Miller, you're safe.
Two queens stand before me. The time has come for you to lip-sync... for your life! Good luck, and don't fuck it up!

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's John Carpenter's turn.
Carpenter grew up affected and bothered by the highly religious Bible culture of the deep south, and found cinema as an escape from the racism and politics around him. He began making short horror films with an 8mm camera when his father gifted him a camera and a projector before he had even started high school. He enrolled in USC School of Cinematic Arts, but would drop out during the last semester to make his first film.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1970s, some of the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

Dark Star (1974)

"The spaced out odyssey."
His directorial debut. It stars Dan O'Bannon, Brian Narelle, Cal Kuniholm and Dre Pahich, and follows the crew of the deteriorating starship Dark Star, twenty years into their mission to destroy unstable planets that might threaten future colonization of other planets.
Carpenter and O'Bannon started writing a script for USC. The film began as a 45-minute 16mm student project with a final budget of $6,000. To achieve feature film length, an additional 50 minutes were shot in 1973, with the support of Canadian distributor Jack Murphy (credited as "Production Associate"). O'Bannon's friend, John Landis, got them in contact with producer-distributor Jack H. Harris for distribution. However, Harris demanded 30 minutes of cuts. This is something that O'Bannon and Carpenter disliked, as "We had what would have been the world's most impressive student film and it became the world's least impressive professional film."
The film had a very limited theatrical run, and there are no box office numbers available. Carpenter and O'Bannon were unhappy that there were empty screenings and the audience not laughing with the jokes. But it found a cult following after they got famous for their later works. At the very least, their careers were starting.

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)

"A white-hot night of hate!"
His second film. It stars Austin Stoker, Darwin Joston, Laurie Zimmer, Tony Burton, Martin West, and Nancy Kyes. It follows a police officer who defends a defunct precinct against a relentless criminal gang, with the help of a death row-bound convict.
Carpenter had hoped to make a Howard Hawks-style Western like El Dorado or Rio Lobo, but when the $100,000 budget prohibited it, Carpenter refashioned the basic scenario of Rio Bravo into a modern setting. He wrote the script in just 8 days, and it included many references to Hawks' works. He filmed the movie in just 20 days, and he referred to this film as the most fun he has ever had directing.
There are no box office numbers available, although it was reported that it had poor sales. While it received initial mixed reviews, its reputation grew and it would become one of his best films. But he needed a hit if he wanted to continue in the business.

Halloween (1978)

"The night he came home!"
His third film. It stars Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, P. J. Soles and Nancy Loomis. The plot centers on a mental patient, Michael Myers, who was committed to a sanitarium for murdering his teenage sister on Halloween night when he was a child. Fifteen years later, having escaped and returned to his hometown, he stalks teenage babysitter Laurie Strode and her friends while under pursuit by his psychiatrist Dr. Samuel Loomis.
After watching Assault on Precinct 13 at the Milan Film Festival, independent film producer Irwin Yablans and financier Moustapha Akkad sought out Carpenter to direct a film for them about a psychotic killer that stalked babysitters. He agreed on the $10,000 salary under the condition that he would write, direct and compose with complete creative freedom and asked his then-girlfriend Debra Hill to co-write it with him. They wrote it in just 10 days, with Hill writing most of the dialogue for the female characters.
The low budget meant that no big stars would appear in the film. Carpenter wanted Peter Cushing to play Dr. Loomis, but his agent refused with the low salary. Christopher Lee would turn down the role, although he would later deem this as the biggest mistake of his career. Yablans then suggested Pleasence. For Laurie, Carpenter wanted Anne Lockhart, but she was busy. He decided to get Curtis, feeling that publicity would sell itself by casting the daughter of Janet Leigh from Psycho.
The film enjoyed a huge success in theaters. It quickly became a word-of-mouth sensation, and earned $70 million worldwide, becoming one of the most profitable horror films ever. It received acclaim, and has been named as a huge influence on the slasher genre. It would spawn a franchise, although Carpenter would not direct another installment ever again.
  • Budget: $300,000.
  • Domestic gross: $47,274,000. ($226.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $70,274,000.

The Fog (1980)

"Bolt your doors. Lock your windows. There's something in the fog!"
His fourth film. It stars Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, Janet Leigh and Hal Holbrook. It tells the story of a strange, glowing fog that sweeps over a small coastal town in Northern California, bringing with it the vengeful ghosts of leprous mariners who were killed in a shipwreck there a century before.
While visiting England, Carpenter and Debra Hill witnessed an eerie fog rolling over the landscape from a distance. Carpenter decided to tie the fog to a an actual event, the wrecking of the Frolic, that took place in the 19th century near Goleta, California. However, Carpenter hated the film after watching a rough cut, and realized that he needed to reshoot more scenes in order to compete with the increasing horror market. Around one-third of the film was filmed during reshoots.
Thanks to its low budget, it was a great box office success, making $21.4 million domestically. While initial reactions were divided, its reputation grew with time.
  • Budget: $1,100,000.
  • Domestic gross: $21,448,782. ($81.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $21,448,782.

Escape from New York (1981)

"1997. New York City is now a maximum security prison. Breaking out is impossible. Breaking in is insane."
His fifth film. It stars Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes, Adrienne Barbeau and Harry Dean Stanton. Set in the near-future world of 1997, it follows a crime-ridden United States, which has converted Manhattan Island in New York City into the country's sole maximum security prison. Air Force One is hijacked by anti-government insurgents who deliberately crash it into the walled borough. Ex-Special Forces and current federal prisoner Snake Plissken is given just 24 hours to go in and rescue the President of the United States, after which, if successful, he will be pardoned.
Carpenter started writing the script after the Watergate scandal, inspired by Death Wish. No studio wanted to finance it, but the success of his previous films allowed him to finally make the project happen. The studio wanted a big star, but Carpenter was interested in Kurt Russell. Russell wanted the role to help him avoid being typecast for Disney comedies. Carpenter struggled to film New York within the film's $6 million budget, although he still had cooperation from the city in shutting down 10 blocks. Certain matte paintings were rendered by James Cameron, who was at the time a special-effects artist, and who also served as the director of photography at some points.
Carpenter enjoyed another box office success, as the film made $25 million domestically. It also received critical acclaim, and helped elevate Russell's career.
  • Budget: $6,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,244,626. ($86.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $25,244,626.

The Thing (1982)

"Man is the warmest place to hide."
His sixth film. Based on the novella Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell Jr., it stars Kurt Russell, A. Wilford Brimley, T. K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, Peter Maloney, Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, Joel Polis, and Thomas G. Waites. It tells the story of a group of American researchers in Antarctica who encounter the eponymous "Thing", an extraterrestrial life-form that assimilates, then imitates, other organisms. The group is overcome by paranoia and conflict as they learn that they can no longer trust each other and that any of them could be the Thing.
Producers David Foster Lawrence Turman approached Universal over adapting Campbell's novella. While there was an adaptation in 1951, they wanted something that would be more faithful to the source material. While the producers wanted Carpenter in 1976, Universal preferred the veteran Tobe Hooper instead. After Hooper failed to impress, and after the box office success of Halloween, Universal decided to hire Carpenter. This made The Thing his first film made under a big studio.
After Carpenter disliked the script drafts, he got Bill Lancaster to write the film. While he struggled in adapting the film, he made some changes. These included reducing the 37 characters to just 12, and choosing to open the film in the middle of the action, instead of using a flashback as in the novella. Lancaster aimed to create an ensemble piece where one person emerged as the hero, instead of having a Doc Savage-type hero from the start. Lancaster's original ending had both MacReady and Childs turn into the Thing. In the spring, the characters are rescued by helicopter, greeting their saviors with "Hey, which way to a hot meal?". Carpenter thought this ending was too shallow. He opted to end the film with the survivors slowly freezing to death to save humanity from infection, believing this to be the ultimate heroic act.
While the film was in pre-production, there was still no design on the effects needed for the Thing. Rob Bottin was assigned for the job, and he deduced that the creature had been all over the galaxy. This allowed it to call on different attributes as necessary, such as stomachs that transform into giant mouths and spider legs sprouting from heads. It required so much cooperation from the crew; it took 50 crew members to operate the Blair-Thing puppet. The team wanted the film shot in black-and-white, but Universal refused as they didn't want to risk losing television rights.
While Carpenter composed the scores for his films, he decided that the film needed an European musical approach. So he flew to Rome to speak with Ennio Morricone to convince him to take the job. By the time Morricone flew to Los Angeles to record the score, he had already developed a tape filled with an array of synthesizer music because he was unsure what type of score Carpenter wanted. Morricone wrote complete separate orchestral and synthesizer scores and a combined score, which he knew was Carpenter's preference. Carpenter picked a piece, closely resembling his own scores, that became the main theme used throughout the film.
1982 was a very tough time for horror, as Universal discovered that the audience's appeal for the genre declined by over 70%. But Universal was still having hope on the film, especially as they had a few successful test screenings. On top of that, the only competition was the still unrelease E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial, and they expected that film to appeal solely to kids. However, after one market research screening, Carpenter queried the audience on their thoughts, and one audience member asked, "Well what happened in the very end? Which one was the Thing...?" When Carpenter responded that it was up to their imagination, the audience member responded, "Oh, God. I hate that." After returning from a screening of E.T., the audience's silence at a trailer of The Thing caused Foster to remark, "We're dead."
And Foster's fears were right.
The film disappointed in its opening weekend with just $3.1 million, ranking #8 and behind the fourth weekend of Poltergeist. With a huge amount of competition that summer, it didn't have staying power at the box office, finishing with just $19 million domestically, marking a box office failure. But the bad news didn't stay there. Not only very few people watched it, but nearly everyone who watched it hated it. The film received insanely negative reviews on its release, and hostility for its cynical, anti-authoritarian tone and graphic special effects. Carpenter also saw repercussions to his career. He was attached to direct an adaptation of Stephen King's Firestarter, but Universal fired him after the poor reception of The Thing. His previous success had gained him a multiple-film contract at Universal, but the studio opted to buy him out of it instead. He also said that while he continued making films, he lost confidence.
As years passed, however, the film underwent through a re-appraisal. Once derided, the film found a second life as a huge milestone in the horror genre. It's now hailed as one of the greatest horror films ever made, as well as one of the most influential. Carpenter deemed it as his favorite film, although he lamented that it took years for the film to get the attention it deserved. He noted that his career would've been very different if the film was a success at first, although he also states he does not regret anything he made.
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,857,465. ($64.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $19,857,465.

Christine (1983)

"How do you kill something that can't possibly be alive?"
His seventh film. Based on the novel by Stephen King, it stars Keith Gordon, John Stockwell, Alexandra Paul, Robert Prosky and Harry Dean Stanton. It follows the changes in the lives of Arnie Cunningham, his friends, his family, and his teenage enemies after he buys a classic red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine, a car that seems to have a mind of its own and a jealous, possessive personality, which has a bad influence on Arnie.
Carpenter was the first choice to direct the project, although he was working on two projects first. When those projects stalled, he agreed to direct. He said this was not a film he had planned on directing, saying that he directed the film as "a job" as opposed to a "personal project." This was because, after The Thing flopped, he needed something to maintain his career in Hollywood.
The film earned $21 million domestically, which was barely enough for the film to break even. It received a favorable response, although it didn't get the acclaim like his previous works.
  • Budget: $10,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $21,017,849. ($65.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $21,017,849.

Starman (1984)

"He has traveled from a galaxy far beyond our own. He is 100,000 years ahead of us. He has powers we cannot comprehend. And he is about to face the one force in the universe he has yet to conquer. Love."
His eighth film. It stars Jeff Bridges, Karen Allen, Charles Martin Smith, and Richard Jaeckel. It tells the story of a non-corporeal alien who has come to Earth and cloned a human body in response to the invitation found on the gold phonograph record installed on the Voyager 2 space probe.
Carpenter was eager to shed his image as a maker of exploitative thrillers and make something new in his filmography. Despite receiving positive reviews, it barely passed its budget.
  • Budget: $24,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $28,744,356. ($86.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $28,744,356.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

"Jack Burton's is in for some serious trouble and you're in for some serious fun."
His ninth film. It stars Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun and James Hong. The film tells the story of truck driver Jack Burton, who helps his friend Wang Chi rescue Wang's green-eyed fiancée from bandits in San Francisco's Chinatown. They go into the mysterious underworld beneath Chinatown, where they face an ancient sorcerer named David Lo Pan, who requires a woman with green eyes to marry him in order to be released from a centuries-old curse.
While 20th Century Fox was struggling with the film's tone and script, they decided to hire Carpenter as he could film very quick, giving him 10 weeks of pre-production. It didn't help that the film was competing against The Golden Child, a comedy starring Eddie Murphy with a similar theme. Carpenter made sure to accelerate filming so that the film could open months before The Golden Child. Carpenter envisioned the film as an inverse of traditional scenarios in action films with a Caucasian protagonist helped by a minority sidekick.
The film received very positive reviews from critics. But that didn't translate to box office success, as the film made a disastrous $11 million domestically, which was worse than any of Carpenter's films. After the commercial and critical failure of the film, Carpenter became very disillusioned with Hollywood and became an independent filmmaker.
  • Budget: $25,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $11,100,000. ($31.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $11,100,000.

Prince of Darkness (1987)

"Before man walked the Earth... it slept for centuries. It is evil. It is real. It is awakening."
His tenth film. It stars Donald Pleasence, Victor Wong, Jameson Parker, and Lisa Blount. It follows a group of quantum physics students in Los Angeles who are asked to assist a Catholic priest in investigating an ancient cylinder of liquid discovered in a monastery, which they come to find is a sentient, liquid embodiment of the son of Satan.
The film received mixed reviews, with some feeling the film did not accomplish its goals. But it was a much needed success at the box office for Carpenter.
  • Budget: $3,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,182,492. ($38.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $14,182,492.

They Live (1988)

"You see them on the street. You watch them on TV. You might even vote for one this fall. You think they're people just like you. You're wrong. Dead wrong."
His 11th film. Based on the short story Eight O'Clock in the Morning by Ray Nelson, it stars Roddy Piper, Keith David, and Meg Foster. The film follows an unnamed drifter who discovers through special sunglasses that the ruling class are aliens concealing their appearance and manipulating people to consume, breed, and conform to the status quo via subliminal messages in mass media.
Carpenter acquired the film rights to both the comic book and short story and wrote the screenplay, using Nelson's story as a basis for the film's structure. Because the screenplay was the product of so many sources, Carpenter decided to use the pseudonym "Frank Armitage", an allusion to one of his favorite writers, H. P. Lovecraft. For the role of Nada, the filmmaker cast professional wrestler Roddy Piper, whom he had met at WrestleMania III earlier in 1987. For Carpenter, it was an easy choice: "Unlike most Hollywood actors, Roddy has life written all over him."
The film debuted at #1, although it dropped very quickly, it was still a small box office success for Carpenter. It received negative reviews for its social commentary, writing, and acting. However, its reputation grew with time, and it's now one of Carpenter's greatest films. And for having one of the best quotes in cinema history:
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum."
  • Budget: $3,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $13,447,978. ($35.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $13,447,978.

Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992)

"Women want him for his wit. The C.I.A. wants him for his body. All Nick wants is his molecules back."
His 12th film. Loosely based on the novel by H.F. Saint, it stars Chevy Chase, Daryl Hannah, Sam Neill, Michael McKean and Stephen Tobolowsky.
Saint's novel attracted the attention of Chase, who bought the rights even though the novel wasn't finished. William Goldman was assigned to write the screenplay in the mid 1980s, by which time Ivan Reitman was attached to direct. While Reitman liked the script, Chase (who financed it as his passion project) disapproved and he decided to leave. Wanting less comedy, Chase approached Carpenter over directing the film. While Carpenter preferred being independent, he agreed to direct the film, especially after Chase vouched for him to the studio.
The film was panned by critics and was another box office dud for Carpenter. Carpenter would go on to say that the production of the film was very troubling and vigorous. While also battling studio executives, Carpenter claimed Chase and Hannah were "the stuff of nightmares" and "impossible to direct". In 2023, he said:
"It gave me a chance to make a quasi-serious movie. But Chevy Chase, Sam Neill — who I love and had a longtime friendship with — and Warner Bros. … I worked for them, and it was pleasant. No, it wasn’t pleasant at all. I’m lying to you. It was a horror show. I really wanted to quit the business after that movie. God, I don’t want to talk about why, but let’s just say there were personalities on that film … he shall not be named who needs to be killed. No, no, no, that’s terrible. He needs to be set on fire. No, no, no. Anyway, it’s all fine. I survived it."
Mmm, I wonder who is that "he" 🤔
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,358,033. ($31.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $14,358,033.

In the Mouth of Madness (1994)

"Lived any good books lately?"
His 13th film. It stars Sam Neill, Julie Carmen, Jürgen Prochnow, David Warner and Charlton Heston. It follows John Trent, an insurance investigator who visits a small town while looking into the disappearance of a successful author of horror novels, and begins to question his sanity as the lines between reality and fiction seem to blur.
The film received mixed reviews and was another bomb for Carpenter. But it has found some fans, who deemed it as an underrated piece of work.
  • Budget: $8,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,924,549. ($18.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $8,924,549.

Village of the Damned (1995)

"Beware the children."
His 14th film. A remake of the 1960 film, it stars starring Christopher Reeve, Linda Kozlowski, Kirstie Alley, Michael Paré, Mark Hamill, and Meredith Salenger. The plot follows a small town's women who give birth to unfriendly alien children posing as humans.
The film was another critical and commercial dud for Carpenter. The film also marked the last theatrical performance by Reeve, before his paralysis. Carpenter described the film as a "contractual assignment" that he was "really not passionate about" and stated that it is one of his least favorite films that he's made as a director.
  • Budget: $22,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $9,418,365. ($19.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $9,418,365.

Escape from L.A. (1996)

"Snake is back."
His 15th film. The sequel to Escape from New York, it stars Kurt Russell, Steve Buscemi, Stacy Keach, Bruce Campbell, Peter Fonda, and Pam Grier. When a terrorist brainwashes Utopia, the daughter of the President, into stealing a detonation device, Snake Plissken is assigned to find the device and the girl in Los Angeles.
A sequel was stuck in development hell for years. Unsatisfied with the drafts, Carpenter and Russell decided to write the film themselves, along with Debra Hill. Carpenter insists that Russell's persistence allowed the film to be made, since "Snake Plissken was a character he loved and wanted to play again." Carpenter credited that same enthusiasm with motivating Russell's work on the script, declaring "I used his passion to do the movie to get him to write more".
The film received mixed reviews, who deemed it as inferior to the original. While the film made as much as the original in North America and was his highest grossing film in decades, it also carried a higher budget, so it was another flop for Carpenter. Time was kind to the film, and is considered as a worthy follow-up. Carpenter himself says that he is proud of the film, and even says is better than the original.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,477,365. ($50.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $42,377,365.

Vampires (1998)

"Prepare for the dawn."
His 16th film. Based on the novel Vampire$ by John Steakley, it stars James Woods, Daniel Baldwin, Sheryl Lee, Thomas Ian Griffith, Maximilian Schell, and Tim Guinee. It follows Jack Crow, the leader of a team of vampire hunters. After his parents were murdered by vampires, Crow was raised by the Catholic Church to become their "master slayer". The plot is centered on Crow's efforts to prevent a centuries-old cross from falling into the hands of Jan Valek, the first and most powerful of all vampires.
After making Escape from L.A., Carpenter considered quitting as he stopped having fun with filmmaking. However, he was fascinated by the novel and set out to adapt it. After all potential actors turned down the offer to play Crow, he offered it to James Woods. Woods was interested in doing the film because he had never been offered a horror film before and wanted to try something new. The MPAA took issue with the film's over-the-top violence, threatening to give it an NC-17 rating unless some of the gore was cut. Ultimately, about 20 seconds of footage was cut from the film.
You can guess how it all went. Surprise surprise, another flop.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $20,308,772. ($38.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $20,308,772.

Ghost of Mars (2001)

His 17th film. It stars Natasha Henstridge, Ice Cube, Jason Statham, Pam Grier, Clea DuVall and Joanna Cassidy. Set on a colonized Mars in the 22nd century, the film follows a squad of police officers and a convicted criminal who fight against the residents of a mining colony who have been possessed by the ghosts of the planet's original inhabitants.
Broken record but you are right: another bomb. Carpenter stated he was intentionally trying to make the film as over-the-top and tongue-in-cheek as possible. He claimed he was trying to make a mindless and silly, yet highly entertaining and thrilling, action flick where "the universe allows its characters and plot points to be silly without becoming full-fledged comedies."
  • Budget: $28,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,709,640. ($15.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $14,010,832.

The Ward (2010)

"Only sanity can keep you alive."
His 18th and final film. It stars Amber Heard, Mamie Gummer, Danielle Panabaker, Laura-Leigh, Lyndsy Fonseca and Jared Harris. Set in 1966, the film chronicles a young woman who is institutionalized after setting fire to a house, and who finds herself haunted by the ghost of a former inmate at the psychiatric ward.
After Ghosts of Mars, Carpenter simply lost interest in filmmaking. In the meantime he had done two episodes for the anthology TV show Masters of Horror, and he said that the series reminded him of why he fell in love with the craft in the first place. Carpenter said that the script "came along at the right time for me", and he was particularly fascinated by how the film took place within a single location.
The film received a very limited run in theaters before hitting digital, so it became another flop and his lowest film ever. It also received poor reviews, and some lamented that this would be his swan song.
  • Budget: $10,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $7,760. ($11,115 adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $5,351,580.

Other Projects

As mentioned, he is also a composer, having scored nearly all his films. He also scored the recent Halloween trilogy, even though he didn't write nor direct anything.
Many of his films have been remade and he doesn't care in the slightest. He has said that they can do whatever they want as long as he gets paid.
“I love it, if they are going to pay me money. If they pay me, it’s wonderful. If they don’t pay me, I don’t care. I think it’s unfair if they don’t pay me. I think everyone should pay me. Why not? I’m an old guy now and I need money. Send me money.”

The Future

Carpenter has not directed another film ever since. He has said multiple times that he feels burned out by the industry and he is not interested in returning to the director's chair. He said he would only return for a new film under three conditions: it needs a reasonable budget, plenty of time to prepare, and time off for the basketball season and the playoffs.
He said he is content with his current lifestyle. What's that lifestyle? In his words, "Get up late, watch a little news, play a video game, watch some basketball, go to bed." Ain't that the dream?

He made 18 films, but only 16 have reported box office numbers. Across those 16 films, he made $340,067,044 worldwide. That's $21,254,190 per film.

The Verdict

Not reliable. Not even close.
Well, he ain't known as a cult filmmaker for nothing. Carpenter didn't get the respect and appreciation he deserved at first, so he was often struggling to find an audience in theaters. Despite so many bombs, studios continued financing him, which is a welcome surprise. At least, he got to see that his once-reviled works are now an influential and beloved part of cinema. Now, as he puts it, his career would look far more different if The Thing wasn't a commercial and critical dud in its initial release. We can't theorize, for we don't know this kind of what if. But Carpenter built an impressive and memorable filmography, even if his later works represented some of the worst films he made.
And look, he is content with retirement. Playing video games and watching the NBA sounds like a good deal for anyone.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Danny Boyle. One of Britain's most important directors.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Robert Zemeckis. He was one of the biggest filmmakers, now it's a surprise if he makes a hit.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
April 29-May 5 Danny Boyle It was a long wait, but 28 Years Later is finally happening.
May 6-12 Wes Craven A horror legend.
May 13-19 Clint Eastwood Great actor. Great director.
May 20-26 Robert Zemeckis Can we get old Zemeckis back?
Who should be next after Zemeckis? That's up to you.

2024.04.22 07:13 TheBearisalesbain Ode to future books

As a result of the previous post, I started thinking about a bunch of stuff I would really like to see in future lesbian books so here’s my list.
  1. Vampires. But like actually blood thirsty vampires and a lot of drama as a reason
  2. Playful dynamics. Like I want to read why these women keep meeting each other again again beyond simply sex
  3. More sex. It’s crazy because I consider myself prudish but my god just what is going on??? Is this church???
  4. Emphasis on pussy( everyone is so shy about liking pumpum)
  5. Scandals. Cheating. Etc
  6. Lookism🧍🏾‍♀️
  7. Opera and ballet
  8. Gothic settings!!!!
  9. Princesses and knights!
  10. Actual cottagecore
  11. Problematic relationships
  12. No more straight woman blues
  13. The less mention of men the better
  14. More butchxfem works but like ones where the writers remembers that butches are women also not little men
  15. This is to my African lesbians. Guys we don’t write at all😭 like there’s so much we can write about like mami wata. That concept is gay as hell!
  16. Exclusively lesbian or sapphics. I’m not interested in the whole community meet up and in my opinion outside of our collective oppression we don’t have anything in common
  17. Religious dilemma
  18. Less self deprecation works. Please think better about yourselves
  19. Witchcraft but like actual witchcraft
  20. Car racing stories. I think the getup is so hot!
  21. Fashion! More fashion based stories
  22. Historical romance but with older women who are enemies
  23. Dark acedemia stories
  24. Lastly, moving into a small town stories and settling down. Those kind of stories hold a special place in my heart
