2024.05.15 23:51 lightscamerasnaction Delta in-flight movies [March 2024]

I tried to write down every single movie available on my flights in March 2024. I handwrote some of my notes to pass the 13 hours which is why there are ??? when I couldn't read my own writing/abbreviations. Note that not all titles were available on all flights, and my list is missing a chunk of them (especially titles beginning with "S" for some reason). Hope someone finds it useful! Maybe someone will get to creating a Letterboxd list of them all before me! [Posted this in movies and thought delta users might find it useful too]

2024.04.26 03:28 autobuzzfeedbot 13 Child Stars Who Opened Up About Being The Breadwinner Of Their Families At Such A Young Age

  1. When Zendaya decided she wanted to be an actor, her mom stayed in Oakland and worked two jobs to support the family, while her dad quit his job and moved to LA with her. However, as Zendaya grew more successful, she became the family breadwinner. In 2024, she told British Vogue, "I'm almost going through my angsty teenager phase now because I didn't really have the time to do it before. I felt like I was thrust into a very adult position: I was becoming the breadwinner of my family very early, and there was a lot of role-reversal happening, and just kind of becoming grown, really."
  2. In her memoir Sorry Not Sorry, Naya Rivera said that, growing up, her family often faced financial issues because of her dad's spending habits. After losing his IT job in 2001, he couldn't find work for three years. She wrote, "As Dad's stint of unemployment dragged on, I became the only one in the family who had any money...I didn't have millions — more like tens of thousands — in my Coogan account, but these were dire times. There was literally no money coming in at all, so over the next few years, my mom and I made two court visits to request a withdrawal from my account. I'd miss the first few hours of class, and we'd go to court and stand in front of a judge to petition for permission."
  3. On Call Her Daddy in 2024, JoJo Siwa said, "My parents thought when I turned 18, I was gonna get my Coogan account money, take all of my money, and have it all be mine...I was like, 'I can give you so much reassurance, but I will never do that.' That's always been a fear of theirs, always has been. Just because the opportunity of me leaving them high and dry was right there. People have done it before. Child stars have done it before, but I would never do that to my family."
  4. When Sydney Sweeney was about 11 or 12, her family moved to LA so she could pursue acting. However, they ended up losing a lot, filing bankruptcy, and even losing their family home back in Washington. So, to help make ends meet, she worked as a Universal Studios tour guide, cleaned bathrooms restaurants, and babysat. In 2023, she told Women's Health, "It was hard because they were supporting my dream, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I didn’t want to fail them."
  5. After winning the talent show New Faces as a teenager, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power actor Lenny Henry became "the family breadwinner" overnight. In 2012, he told Yorkshire Live, "Which you don't really want to be when you're just 17, but I took it on because I love my family."
  6. By first grade, Jodie Foster — the youngest in her family — was the main breadwinner for her mom and three siblings. In 2024, she told the Atlantic, "I was it. There was no other income besides me."
  7. In her 2023 Hulu documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, Brooke Shields said that, growing up, her mom/manager would tell her things like, "If we get this job, we don't have to live in our little apartment anymore" and, "If we get this job, we can go buy a new car."
  8. In 2017, Bella Thorne told the Happy Sad Confused podcast, "I didn't want to audition for Shake It Up! I literally said in my audition, 'I don't sing. I don't dance. I'm basically tone-deaf, and I'm not funny. So I don't know why I'm here.' And everybody just started laughing. They all thought it was a joke...[But] we were about to live physically on the street if I didn't have that role."
  9. In 2022, Keke Palmer told the LA Times, "Ultimately, what happened is that it just hit a point where my dad could no longer do a job because if he did a job, then there would be nobody to take care of my older sister and my younger siblings because my mom was always with me. So it was like, all of our roles were switched. I became the financial breadwinner because my career was bringing in the most money, and my parents wanted to support me, but they couldn't have their own jobs because their own jobs would not even allow them to really be able to sustain a stable household."
  10. In a since-deleted Tumblr audio clip from a few years ago, Cole Sprouse reportedly said, "My brother [Dylan] and I were put into acting when we were 8 months old by our mother because we needed money. I never made the decision to join the arts or acting specifically. And so it was never really my passion."
  11. When Jena Malone was 14, she sought emancipation from her mom and sued her on accusations that she'd wasted more than $1 million of Jena's earnings. In 2003, Jena told Index Magazine, "Financially I had come to a sink or swim situation. I ran into some strange tax problems, and the only way out of them was to get to my trust fund."
  12. In a 2019 blog post reflecting on fifth grade, Wil Wheaton said, "I know that, by this time in my life, I had been telling my mother that I didn't want to go on auditions or be an actor. I remember telling her, almost every day, 'I just want to be a kid,' and I remember her dismissing that. She constantly gaslighted me about how I really did want to be an actor. She was so manipulative about it. She would tell me how selfish I was because she'd sacrificed her own career to support mine."
  13. And finally, on a 2021 episode of their podcast 4D with Demi Lovato featuring Drew Barrymore, Demi Lovato said, "I noticed that when I came into the spotlight at a young age and then was the breadwinner, like you said, there wasn't a dossier, there wasn't a manual for my parents to read, and it [would] say, 'Here's what to do to raise a child star.' They didn't get that. So when they would try to ground me at 17, I would say, 'I pay the bills!' And I cringe now when I think about that attitude, but...when the world is putting you on a pedestal, you kind of think that you can do no wrong."

2024.04.06 02:42 Akhuyan I don't know if I have SDAM.... but I am sure struggling with memory

TLDR: I might have SDAM. Memories are mostly based on inferences, journals, or what my parents tell me. I have some specific memories, but they might not be accurate. I struggle to recall certain memories, like crushes or specific books I've read. My earliest memory is from age 8, but it could have happened later. I have some memories from different grades, but they are not very detailed or vivid. Dreams seem as real as memories. The memories I do have may not have been remembered in chronological order. I hoard things to help trigger memories. Cleaning and re-reading journals sometimes brings back forgotten memories, but they are not very clear. I remember more in the periods I journaled more. It's becoming an existential crisis for me.
I was originally was going to comment this, but it strayed far away from the original
This is something which I am still trying to learn about as someone who thinks they have SDAM. I know all cases are self-diagnosis, just haven't brought it up to therapist, and don't want to jump to conclusions, even after hearing about SDAM for a few months. Wanted this disclaimer.
I feel like my "memories" are either inferences based on known facts, journals I read afterwards, or from parents. I used to do a thing I was young where I would journal about previous journals events, which I don't even have access too,.... but I'm grateful I did that. Could be a sign I did the reviews due to forgetting that they happened even back then lol. Who knows
I've seen people say around the age of 2. However, my "first memory", if you can even call it that, is around the age of 8, when I lose a spelling bee. However, that has been brought up by my parents later, and I even think I journaled about it. Next one, I read the most amount of books that year memory. However, it's in the newspaper, you got a savings account, a trophy, etc. I remember smiling when my mom dropped me off for 2nd grade. Guess what? Found an assignment in my closet later on, which I had to have done at some point later on, which shows me being happy and mom taking a photograph....
What about the memories I should remember? Do I remember the crush I supposedly had? No. Do I remember a singular one of the books I read? Yes/No, only know the series I read due to still owning Magic Tree House & Rainbow Magic books. If I read other series, who knows, and who knows if I even read all on the bookshelf. Do I remember being best friends with this person I will call Julian (not real)? No, there's a photograph somewhere in my room likely of me being with him. I was always confused why he even treated me very nicely, since the beginning of "actual memories" (sometime in middle school, if they can be called that), and then my mother knew when I asked, but not me, that we were best friends...
3rd grade (2016-2017). I struggled learning how to write and handed out candy for Halloween with parents. I don't remember any specific event on learning how to write, and I still struggle to write till this day, so I just type everything, so another inference. Halloween handed out with candy? This may be my first memory. I remember that my parents and 3rd grade teacher was there. I can infer that I was dressing as Toad from Mario with red or blue spots due to the costume being saved. Can I relive it or do much past that? No, I don't even know where that memory even comes from. Now that I think of it, it could have easily happened in any other year after 3rd grade, as the presence of a 3rd grade teacher doesn't mean it didn't occur after that grade. May even have a document somewhere on the old computer if I go searching for it journaling, as I had access to the internet then. Social studies fair project? I have the physical version and digital version, don't remote much other than the paper of my speech which I can infer was awkward, as I have social anxiety, not much detail and could be reconstructed, not that vivid.
4th grade (2017-2018). I remember doing a PowerPoint on Poland for gifted. Why? Well, I still have it, but literally nothing else happened that year. Can't even remember her name and she was a gifted teacher and went to almost every day from 2nd grade - 5th grade apparently. I will have that answer once I find the old documents again of my evaluation, as I remember finding that a few months ago.
5th grade (2018-2019). I got in trouble for rolling my eyes, remembered as I had a t-shirt (I'm sorry, did I just roll my eyes out loud?). I could have easily gotten yelled at in the hall or classroom, but isn't the playground as I rolled my eyes coming inside is the story and is in journal. I remembered I colored in speech, still have the drawing in fact, though the teacher's name I can't remember, even if I had her for three years of speech. I can go on to list the rap battle (journal), the backpack I wore (in closet), the teacher (listed name in journal/searched online later to figure out if she was 4th or 5th and who was the other one if so), time management problem (multiple worksheets I kept and still have). There are more memories for 5th grade, but all I can think of top of my head are related to something else. I can't even remember a single friend name in this point of time from, but I can infer that they are likely the ones which I just happened to already be friends with at 6th grade that I can remember of, except the ones I forgot until parents told me (like Julian).
The dream I journaled this year apparently of flying to Brazil after missing the bus and then deciding to live there before canceling it to be in band instead is just as real as anything else in fact. Like the dream is as real as the reality, so how do you know what's real?
6th grade (2019-2020). I was ostracized from peers due to gendesexuality, figured out I was gay due to never liking a girl (not true, in fact, I think I am aroace, no attraction to anyone) snapped at someone for them telling me to help them with chairs, I was in student council, had other snapping for weird reasons, dated 3 people with no remorse (I would think I would, but I thought it was totally fine????), and told by everyone I need to apply myself and write better. These were all journaled and most of these are digitized journals, as I begun digitizing old ones last year to never lose the past.
7th grade (2020-2021). I became part of an unsavory friends group (maybe 6th grade, too lazy to fact check this rn), was homeschool due to COVID, groomed online, and a lot more stuff. It's all journal or it's all digital stuff I have access too. It's certainly not vivid and some is just like what I remember, rather than being something I see, though I do have some memories which I can see.
8th grade (2021-2022). Solidified my gender identity, able to grow hair long, public school again, wore a mask but got bullied for it, Julian was weirdly nice to me (wrote about it at time, thought it was so confusing, maybe they were trying to reconnect but I had no idea why they were talking to me), thought I was plural, played Minecraft (though I did play before this on Xbox, this is the first game I have saved on Minecraft Education edition and can remember somewhat). ALL journaled and not vivid.
9th grade (2022-2023). Started doing college courses, continued to struggle with handwriting, struggled to get through day but persisted for the college courses which allowed me to wear earplugs in library, had a corrupt teacher who "lost" my work, made first friend, diagnosed with disorder, some family moved in till November, which were all journaled about. However, I journaled less this year than other years due to trying to survive.
10th grade (2023-2024) More college courses, fought for accommodations with many incidents of them saying earplugs cause a fire hazard, created systems of self-government, had covid, started to meal prep, predicted a new "era", created safeguards, yellowjackets invaded room, journaled on why plushies were put away (interesting history with my inferences failing), overnight oats became favorite food, almost died from car crash, argued with parents about therianthropy and homeschool, started to expand my knowledge past psychology into other subjects, discussed SDAM the first time in journal (October 2023), debated dropping out, switched to homeschool for college, journaled about relationships for months to determine aroace status for 100%, became more comfortable in my skin, and more. Do you see how this is close to the longest paragraph, only with 3rd grade and 5th grade coming close, but those events weren't simplified and these were! I remember more when I journal more.
It's like my memories aren't like remembered in the order they originally happened. I think I may have realized this at some point and started hoarding stuff. I said this way before in the past. My mother always asks me to get rid of stuff, but if I lose the item, and don't journal about it, I may lose the ability to recall the little facts I do have. Everytime I check my unorganized files, try to clean my room, or reread journals, I remember something I forgot, but never truly see it vividly, it is a faint picture at best.
How do I deal with this. The more I think of it is becoming more like an existential crisis.

2024.03.20 17:25 throwawayie17 The detailed post-wedding writeup I wish I had when I was planning!

This is the writeup I wish I had found as I was planning my wedding. I got married last september and I finally have enough bandwidth to do a writeup of how it went and lessons learned. I hope I never get married again, so these lessons would be wasted if I did not share them. I was never a person who spent much time imagining weddings but I have spent many years in the concert and event industry so I know the details that matter to making an event run smoothly (and they’re the boring stuff like bathrooms and trash cans and electrical cords and timelines). I’m pretty organized and was also not willing to shell out for a wedding planner so we tackled this thing ourselves.
And! I’m thrilled we had a wedding and that it was such a good one. I loved having our people all together for a weekend and it was worth it.Side note: I hated the bullshit marketing and expectations placed on being “a bride.” Planning a wedding is a chore and I can’t say how annoying it was to have all of my internet algorithms suggesting shapewear and weight loss scams to me for the whole wedding year. Fuck right off with that. Getting married was a joy but planning a wedding sucked and it was worth it anyway. But I’m never doing it again. I prioritized keeping my sanity through the whole process and it was still a lot of work.
Philosophy:
My partner and I are both pretty practical people and have fortunately sane families so it was up to us how we wanted to plan this thing. We read parts of A Practical Wedding by Megan Keene and it recommended choosing your top three most important things and focusing on those. The book also recommended a “vibe mission statement” . So we decided that ours were.
  1. A Good Ceremony
  2. Invite all our people
  3. A Good photographer (we’re both such grubby outdoor people that we’re wearing helmets and sunglasses in every single photo of us and we wanted good photos of our one day dressed up)
And our vibe we wanted was “joyful, comfortable lawn party.” I imagined a big barefoot hobbit type party with trees and lights and comfy skirts.
These priorities made it SO much easier to disregard the shit that we did NOT care about. ‘Cause there was a LOT of that.
We did pay for several services that could have been done cheaper, but for me it was worth it to hire professionals so that I wouldn’t have to be event managing while I was trying to get married. I downloaded the wedding planning spreadsheets from a practical wedding and used those, but any would do fine. I mostly used them to keep track of budgets and payment deadlines.
I’ll break the planning down into categories in no particular order and sum it up at the end. Budgets are rough guesses. We’re in a medium-high COL location and we tried to balance budget considerations with subbing things out to keep us sane/help us enjoy the day.
Venue $5,800
Our venue was the most impactful choice we made and we absolutely loved ours. We wanted to stay local and to have a low-key vibe. We had originally put down a deposit for a local cider brewery, but we realized that it had no trees and too industrial of a vibe. Plus it would have been a sunny hell on a summer afternoon and needed us to bring tents and chairs and bleh. So we toured a local farm that met all of our criteria:
-Trees and Nature and outdoor spaces
-An indoor space in case of rain (fuck dealing with tents)
-Allowed 125 people (many farms had lower guest caps
-Allowed us to bring our own food/alcohol
-Close to home
It was stunningly beautiful and comfortable and had plenty of room for our guests to roam the property. We are all outdoorsy people so a farm was our happy place for us and our guests. The sunset was stunning and the wild grasses and flowers growing all over were just heaven. It had a few rules about quiet music and early ending times, but we didn’t mind at all. It was only 20 minutes from our house which saved a lot of hassle and hotel room complications. I would have hated having to drive more than an hour to our venue.
Timeline:
We got engaged in November, had a venue picked by January and a photographer by February and got married in September. It was fast but doable. My partner had said “well, no point wasting any time, we got engaged, let’s get married!” And I’m glad we did. Honestly, wedding planning sucked and making it last longer would not have made it better.
The day-of timeline was hard to piece together and our photographer and lead caterewaitstaff helped build it. The wedding was 3-9 pm and it was the right length for us.
HMU: 9-12
Get ready at venue: 1-2 (it was chaos)
2-3 First look photos
3:15-3:45 ceremony
3:45-4:15 Big family pictures
10 minute break by ourselves for snacks(this was SO nice)
3:45-5:15 Social hour with lawn games and bar burros for guests
5:30-7 ish Dinner, speeches, first dance
7-9 Dancing/playing outside by the fire pit
8? Cake
Ceremony/Officiant $1000 and so worth it
We are fortunate to have a close long term friend who is a unitarian universalist minister. Her wedding was the first one I had ever gone to that had memorable, AMAZING vows and so I asked her if she’d officiate and we were lucky she said yes. Local officiants were asking for 800-1000 for their time and so I offered to pay for her and her families flights out here plus some. This is her profession after all and she deserves to be paid for her training. We are not religious and we wanted joyful, genuine vows. We had been to some weddings with traditional vows or jokey casual vows and those were not for us.
She did 3-4 meetings with us before the wedding and sent us a questionnaire to help her write the ceremony. She also sent us a worksheet that helped us write our own vows.
She broke the ceremony down into parts. The opening greeting and centering, a community blessing for the audience to declare their support for us, a union ritual (flowers, I’ll explain later), the address explaining our story and philosophies, the vows , the ring exchange, and the recession.
Everyone cried, it was a great ceremony and easily my favorite part of the day. It was wonderful. I have our vows printed over a wedding picture on our wall.
Flowers and Flower Ceremony: maybe $100 in supplies and lots of gardening
This was one of our absolute favorite parts. We decided to gamble and grow our own flowers. We decided ahead of time that we were totally okay if it failed. Our goal was to grow enough for just our bouquets and if the garden didn’t work, we would go to trader joes instead. So we planted 150 sf of our garden with dahlias, gladiolus, cosmos and daisies. We got really lucky that they bloomed at the right time. The dahlias are an ongoing bloomer but glads are boom and bust and we just got lucky is all. I did stagger planting some of the glads by a few weeks as insurance which worked. I had done a lot of research and chose flowers that would bloom in early september ish.
For our union ceremony, instead of lighting a candle or combining sand, we chose to do a flower ceremony. My husband and I walked into the ceremony with our own bouquets made of a single flower type (pink dahlias for me, yellow dahlias for him) and we asked our wedding parties and parents to bring or choose a type of flower to contribute to our combined bouquets. So we had 2 vases set up at the altar. We put some pink and some yellow dahlias into each and then one by one, our people came up and put in their flower along with what it symbolized (daisies for a late grandfather, cosmos for flexibility, wild grass for tenacity, etc) and one of my bridesmaids arranged the mix into two stunning new bouquets and our celebrant bound them together with ribbon to symbolize our combining of families. This was my FAVORITE decision we made. I loved my finished bouquet so much and my husband loved his too. Men should get flowers more often, he looks so handsome in all our photos beaming and holding his flowers.
Website Free
We chose Zola because it had digital save the dates (we did pay for paper invitations) and it allowed cash funds and odd items from other websites on our registry. We did not need standard kitchen stuff, so we had things like power tools and outdoor gear instead.
Guests/Invites: $150ish
It was our priority to invite all of our people, community is important to us and it was such a joy to have all of our favorite people in one room. We had a 125 person limit at the venue and we invited 175 ish. We ended up with 121 people or so. We cut it a little close and it worked out fine. The vast majority of our families are local so they all came, most of the folks who did not come were honorary invites to older relatives out of town.
We did digital save the dates with a small handful printed at walgreens for non email people. Many save the dates got caught in spam filters. We printed paper invites through zola and it was nice to have the envelopes pre addressed. We also enclosed an empty recipe card with each invite and asked our guests to give us recipes. We got maybe 20% of them back. It was a fun idea. Some invites were slow or stuck in the mail, so I did end up sending out maybe 10 replacement ones. We had our RSVP deadline a month before the wedding so we had time to hunt down the nonresponsive folks with plenty of time before our 2 week catering deadline.
Food $2,200
Waitstaff and rentals $3,400
Bar $1200ish
Cake $200
Our venue allowed us to supply our own food/alcohol as long as we hired a waitstaff or full service caterer. Full service catering quotes were in the 15K and fancy food was not our priority. So we ordered chipotle catering and hired a lovely local company that provided waitstaff to move chairs and handle food/trash/ logistics/etc. The owner of this company was wonderful and coordinated everything from timeline to location of tables to making sure we had snacks in our dressing rooms after the ceremony. She also handled plate and tablecloth rentals. My mother’s only demand in the whole wedding was real forks, so fine, we paid for rental plates and silverware. This was the best arrangement for us, the food was delicious and easy and super darn affordable for as many people as we had.
For liquor, we bought wine at costco and ordered beer and ice delivery from a local liquor store. They accepted returns of unopened cases after the wedding. We had 2 simple cocktails at social hour which was the only hard liquor the venue allowed and it was fine. We also had tea and lemonade in dispensers.
We got our cake from a local bakery, we just did sheet cake and a small cutting cake. I almost ordered this at costco, but the local place had super delicious cakes. Our friends picked it up for us.
Photographer $4,000
I started by searching for photos of past weddings at my venue. That helped me find photographers who already understood the vibe I wanted (joyful, outdoor) and it helped me scope out their styles ahead of time to sift out what I did not want (posed, stuffy, heavily filtered). I found a photographer who was funny and put us at ease and who did not speak to me like I was some frilly tik tok “girlie”. I have to hang out with this person for my whole wedding day and I had to find someone I liked enough to spend a day with. She also shared some full wedding galleries which I appreciated so I could see how her photos looked at candid moments, indoors and outdoors. Most photographers only show their highlights which anyone can do well. I asked to add a delivery date for photos in the contract and she delivered right on time since it was so clearly in writing. We also added a second photographer for 3 hours for the getting ready, ceremony and family photos which helped them all happen faster.
I wrote out a detailed family shot list for her and mentioned certain photos that were high priority for me. Critical photos for me were with my grandma, a wide landscape shot to hang on my wall and a single simple straight on shot for our thank you notes. I was glad we put this together ahead of time so we didn’t waste time on the day to try to improvise boring family shots. She got through the posed ones in 30 mins or less which I appreciated. Prioritize the photos you’ll really cherish over the obligatory massive family posed pictures. I wish I had more pictures of just my mom, sister and I but we were so busy that we only have a few.
Day of coordinator $750
She was recommended by the venue and had worked there before. Her duties overlapped some with the catering staff. I hired her so I would not have to do any event managing during the day and she handled things smoothly. I have no idea what exactly she did all day which is perfect! She brought us drinks, fetched missing boutonnieres and handled boring hiccups and I never had to get involved, so it was well worth it.
Clothing: Total probably $2000ish
My husband got his suit made at indochino in green which looked great.
I tried maybe 4 dress shops before I found a used dress at a local bridal consignment store. I liked the consignment store because it offered unique dresses that were different from the trends of the year. That said, I was totally wrong about what I thought I wanted (classic, clean, no deep v, structured, no train) and I ended up getting a stunning sparkly dress with a deep v that fit well right off the rack and it was stretchy! Turns out I was just waiting for a comfortable dress. And I surprised myself that I loved the fabric pattern so much that I kept the train. I opted for both a wrist loop and simple bustle. The wrist loop was elegant and made pre-wedding pictures easy. Having a cheaper, pre-used dress helped me enjoy the day more because I gave myself permission not to baby the dress. So I tromped through grass fields and petted farm animals and carried toddlers around and I had such a blast. And I used good lines boob tape which worked really nicely. I practiced with it several times before the wedding which was important. And I wore comfy shorts under my dress. No chafing and no squeezing was important to me.
I way overthought jewelry but I loved the back necklace I found on etsy, it looked stunning with my low back dress. And I made a day of decision to keep my tiny bee stud earrings in. I wear them every day and I love that they’re my wedding earrings now. I also got gel nails done the week of the wedding and it was fun to still have my wedding nails for weeks after the wedding.Oh! And I wore comfy, cute red leather ankle boots with a 1” heel. Hardly anyone could see them PLUS I get to wear my wedding shoes all the time now. They were comfy af and let me run free.
The only real craft project I did for the wedding was to make bouttonieres for the men in the family. I had a loose dandelion theme (wishes and all) and I made yarn poofballs in dandelion colors. They looked great and never wilted.
Wedding Party
We each chose 3-4 of our closest people for our wedding party. I asked the ladies to wear anything they wanted in green, blue or purple. And then men ended up wearing whatever suit jackets they already owned. I didn’t care at all about matching dresses and I’m glad I avoided the hassle and expense of it.
HMUA maybe $800 for me plus 3?
I found a local hair salon that would do hairstyles and a makeup artist who would come to the salon. I offered to pay for my 3 bridesladies if they wanted to join. It was expensive but it was nice to have a really chill quiet morning before the chaos of the wedding started. I did do a trial with both hair and makeup which I’m glad I did because I edited a few things. I am blonde and relatively fair and the makeup artist ordered brown false lashes for me which looked so much more natural.
Bar Burros $700
This was our one ridiculous silly splurge. We hired 2 bar burros to distribute drinks and bubbles for kids during social hour. They wore flowers and our guests totally loved them. It was silly and we loved it. It loosened everyone up and set a fun mood for the rest of the wedding.
Dancing Lessons $400ish
We took some dance lessons at a local studio and they helped us choreograph a dance to “House of my Soul” by Langhorne Slim which is maybe the best wedding song I’ve ever heard. These dancing dates were one of our favorite parts of wedding planning and helped us remember to have fun. It was so worth the money.
Music $1200
The venue had a list of recommended DJs who knew the decibel limit rules. I told the DJ the vibes we wanted and which genres to avoid and he was lovely. Our families aren’t huge dancers so the poor guy ended up playing music to a pretty empty room while we all watched the sunset but it was not his fault at all. It was worth having him instead of an ipod since he had all his own gear and he could queue things during the ceremony.
We walked down the aisle to a cover of “This must be the place” by Kishi Bashi. It made me cry the first time I listened to it and I could not have found a more perfect procession song. Our recession song was “All I want is You” by Barry Louis Polisar.
Rings $2300 total
My husband had proposed to me using my grandmother’s gold wedding band which happened to fit me perfectly and it was so special to me. I had a local jewelry shop drill in a tiny tiny flush set diamond to make it my own. They did it for $50 and I love it.
We both work a lot with our hands and appreciate craftsmanship. A prong set ring is not my style at all. We found a local jewelry maker who made us matching oxidized damascus steel wedding rings. Mine has some scattered flush set diamonds and his has a narrow gold ribbon to match my engagement band. . They’re stunning and unique and we’ll love them forever.
Other events
We did a welcome event on friday night at a local brewery and a bagel brunch at a park shelter the next morning. I’m so glad we did these so we could spend more time with our people outside of the wedding itself. We were fortunate that our parents offered to handle the food for these. Plus we were able to serve/distribute wedding leftovers and the sunday brunch.
I did have a casual bachelorette weekend at a cabin on a lake about 6 weeks before the wedding. We read books and canoed and wore cute overalls. It was lovely.
Prenup $2,500ish
This is rarely talked about, but it counts as a wedding expense. We’re practical people, we have no intention of getting divorced but things happen. We each had some assets coming into marriage and we already owned a house together but had no legal agreement about it. It’s important that this is complete at least a month ahead of the wedding for enforceability. It covers things like how joint money is and is not used, how inheritances will work and considerations about catastrophic or end of life decisions. The overall process maybe took 6-8 weeks because lawyers are busy people and prenups are not emergencies. It was boring and a chore but it got done and we moved along.
Name change $500?
We chose to take one syllable from each of our names and combine them rather than hyphenate. Imagine he was Sonson and I was smith. We combined to Smithson. What we didn’t realize is that legally its easy and free to hyphenate OR take the husbands name. But since we smushed into a new name we needed a court order before social security would change our names. This involved fingerprints, background checks and a bunch of paperwork. It was a pain, we’re hoping that all the name change admin is done by our first anniversary. It was important to us to share a name in an equitable way so it will be worth it but it was a pain.
MiscBubble favors for send off, , smores, lawn games, fans, seating chart
I used the local “recycled wedding” facebook group to source things like a card box and seating chart, buying them new is a ripoff and no one needs them for more than a day anyway. I paid maybe $100 for miscellaneous wedding junk and made almost all of it back when I sold it after the wedding.
Honeymoon: $5000
The honeymoon is what I’ve dreamed about since I was a kid and it was so important to me. AND it would have been impossible for me to plan it and a wedding at the same time. So we did a micro-moon for two nights in a mountain cabin near home the day after the wedding and we waited 6 months or so and then took a 3 week trip to Japan. I’m so glad we waited. I had time to plan and had enough bandwidth to enjoy it fully. We felt so weird and exhausted after the wedding and I’m glad we only had to go an hour away to chill.
Overall Conclusions:
It was fun and so worth it. Time FLEW. I felt like I was on a strange time conveyor belt for our whole wedding weekend and I couldn’t stop it. I held onto my husband's hand and slowed down at every opportunity to breath and look around. Having our people with us in a beautiful place was an almost otherworldly experience and nothing like it will probably happen again. It was blissful and happy. We were able to do the hard work and logistics ahead of time and by the time the wedding came, we accepted that the work was done and that whatever happened was okay. That was critical. Weddings are chaos and tapping into some major acceptance helped us not worry on the day. It was perfect and messy and a joy.

2024.02.26 14:22 Unlucky-Opposite-865 Movie/Book advice

My 10th-grade students read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and in the past, I have shown the movie Slumdog Millionaire to reinforce the themes of adversity and perseverance. My admin is against this movie going forward as it is rated R. I know there are a MILLION movies out there that would be just as appropriate to highlight those themes without being rated R. I am looking for any advice here as I am struggling to decide what to use. The students look at a couple of characters in the film and present their internal and external obstacles as part of their final project, comparing the characters in the film to Christopher in the book.
My ideas include October Sky, Soul Surfer, and Akeelah and the Bee. What others could I look at? I'm starting the unit next week, but we won't watch the movie until we finish the novel, so I have lots of time to screen and create notes sheets. Thank you!!

2023.12.30 07:59 pocketlintdoll Products I use to manage side effects

Background: I’m a 27 yr old female with moderate acne. I’ve had acne my whole life, but it got really bad two years ago and flares before my period. I have eczema, and prior to accutane my skin was combination, teetering on dry. I am prone to joint pain, headaches and ocular migraines. I have wavy dry hair, and live in a dry cold climate. I’m 5’4 and weigh 114 lbs. my first month was 30 mg and I’m half way through my second month on 60 mg. I currently take two 30 mg pills, one in the AM and one in the PM with fatty meals (avocados all the time!) I’ve experienced a lot of dryness, irritation, redness, and itchiness all over. Dry eyes has been my most uncomfortable side effect. I have not purged yet and am hoping I have completely avoided it. Here’s what I do/use to manage side effects.
Scalp: Eczema honey soothing scalp oil: helped with itchiness and dryness. I added a few drops of rosemary oil because I’m scared of hair loss.
Briogeo cooling hydration scalp revival mask: also helped with irritation and flaking.
Shampoo davines OI shampoo: gentle shampoo, good for first wash nizoral: dandruff shampoo, I use this for my second wash and let it sit on my scalp for 1-2 minutes
Conditioner L’Oréal 8 second wonder water: I use this right after shampooing and it helps with shine and damage
Amika the kure mask: also helps with moisturizing and damage. I let this sit for like 15 minutes with my hair in a claw clip Davines OI conditioner: after rinsing out the mask I follow up with my normal conditioner.
Leave in hair products: Kerastase nutritive crème: dime size amount after I get out of the shower, helps with moisture and detangling
Organix coconut oil: I pre oil my hair before washing and use this in my mids and ends every night. I sleep with my hair in a loose bun with a silk scrunchie.
Oral care: Burt’s bees SLS free toothpaste: SLS can be irritating so any SLS free toothpaste is good.
Nano bristle toothbrush: my gums got pretty sensitive about two weeks into treatment, and switching to a very soft brush toothbrush has helped a lot.
Body care: Bioderma atoderm oil cleanser: the only body wash that has not triggered eczema or make my skin itchy. Expensive, but worth it.
Vanicream: no frills, very moisturizing.
Aquaphor: apply while my skin is still damp from lotion
My hands are prone to eczema so I will do a vanicream+aquaphor combo on them and then wear disposable rubber gloves for a few hours. Doing this has also helped my nails.
Face: Ponds cold cream: first cleanse to remove sunscreen
Vanicream cleanser: holy grail for me! So gentle and effective as a second cleanse.
Dr. Jart ceramidin serum toner: has made a major difference in flaking. I pat this onto my lips as well. Beware, it has essential oils in it, but I don’t find they bother me. The cocokind ceramide barrier repair serum looks like it would be a fragrance free dupe, though I have not tried this product.
Laneige cream skin toner: super moisturizing. I like to have the spray version of this in my bag to moisturize throughout the day without touching my face.
The ordinary copper peptide serum: also hydrating and may help with discoloration. This product may cause irritation, so tread lightly at first. I’ve had no issues with it, but I used it in my routine prior to accutane.
Laneige cica sleeping mask: this is just a thick moisturizer. This has helped me manage redness and irritation on my face a lot
The ordinary squalene oil: cheap and does the job
Aquaphor: on my face and on my lips and everywhere else. Test before starting accutane if you’ve never used it before, as lanolin, while an awesome ingredient, is a fairly common allergen
Lips: Aquaphor Vaseline with coco butter Sunbum SPF lip balm
I bring all hydrating toners over my lips and apply one of the two occlusive products while my lips are still damp with toner. I’ve experienced no lip cracking using this method.
SPF: sunbum unscented for face and body. Keep sunscreen on you to reapply throughout the day
Tower 28 tinted sunscreen: I use this as a foundation and I like it a lot!
Eyes: Systane gel drops: I use these before bed and immediately when waking up. Gel drops are supposed to help keep your eyes moisturized longer
Biotrue hydration drops: I use these throughout the day. Became with overusing eye drops, as they can dilute your actual tears.
Vaginal/anal dryness Momotaro salve: can be used externally and internally. Smells like tea tree oil, but this works so well. Also helpful for yeast infections or irritation after sex
Other random tips: Moisturize on damp skin
Do not wait until your skin is dry and irritated to start adding in more moisturizing products, especially if prone to eczema
Take Claritin to help with purging!!!
Start an omega three supplement before starting accutane
Yin yoga is really good for sore muscles and helped me decrease joint/muscle pain and tension headaches. I go to a yoga studio but there are a bunch of good free videos online
Start to introduce higher amounts of fiber before starting accutane. If you’re diet is low in fiber, immediately adding a bunch of fiber can cause GI upset
Keep a journal with side effects and prior to your derm appointments not a few key concerns down that you would like to address. I’ve found that coming into short check in appointments with a clear agenda helps me get my needs met.
Switch to a silk or satin pillow case and hair scrunchies to help lessen irritated skin and hair damage
Try adding in milk thistle to help with liver support. I use the organic Olivia liver juice and I put that in some coconut water every morning.
Hot water bottle for aches and pains. Also amazing for period cramps
Epsom salt baths also help with aches and pains and I also noticed it helped with body acne. I add some body oil (literally whatever I have laying around) to make sure my skin doesn’t get irritated.
Take cooler showers and baths
Clay ice packs for headaches. They stay cold fairly well and they are soft so you can mold it to your face
Bring a juice box or a little snack to have after blood draws.
Take your mental health seriously. Journal, practice good sleep hygiene and set aside time every day to relax. I work full time, go to grad school full time, and intern at a hospital and I set aside 30 minutes every day to unwind. Sometimes if I’m extra stressed, anxious, or depressed I will do a DBT worksheet that I find for free online. I also see a therapist.
Acne negatively impact myself esteem, but it never impacted who I was able to date or casually hook up with, I even was dating a skin care influencer for a little bit haha. Don’t let a bad break out keep you from going out and enjoying life. Even if you purge, it’ll be over soon! Rely on your support systems to help you get through this treatment :) good luck everyone

December 25th Special Days - Featuring Christmas Freebies!

Christmas/Christmas Day
-- An annual holiday celebrated on December 25th commemorating the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. The day marks the beginning of the larger season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days. The nativity of Jesus, which is the basis for the anno Domini system of dating, is thought to have occurred between 7 and 2 BC. December 25th is not known to be Jesus' actual date of birth, and the date may have been chosen to correspond with either a Roman festival or the winter solstice.

2023.12.03 23:55 omarshaqueef Splitting the class in two: good idea or fireable offense?

So I teach high school seniors and came in after 2 months of them having subs so they're like DOUBLE checked out. I'm dealing with a lot of issues with cell phones and side conversations and I'm actually afraid I'm going to snap (I came really close the other day and slammed my hand on the desk but played it off like it was a part of the lesson on persuasive techniques lol). I ended up just sitting at my desk and telling them they have to finish the reading and worksheet pages for homework for Monday and there would be no late submissions accepted. I believe it's unfair for the students who do want to learn for me to run class this way so I was considering giving students an option: Either do the activities that I plan or sit in the back and do whatever they want but they're still responsible for turning in work on time and they can't ask me for help. I'm sure my admin would be super pissed if I did that so it's more of a power fantasy I'm having but I'm just so done already, I had to take a mental health day and I've only bee there for 4 weeks, and two of them were short because of teacher convention and holidays.

2023.11.12 09:30 SpeakingOfWhichh AITA for threatening to remove my group members names from our project?

Hi, first post here but this really has me upset so I thought I'd ask. I'm currently in college and I'm on a group project with 5 other people. It was this huge thing that we had to do over 2 months, but about 2 weeks ago we realized we did it wrong. Last week I redid a simulation (Nation States. It was really fun) and filled out a detailed worksheet. On the worksheet, we had to explain why we chose what we did and who agreed and disagreed. Since I did it by myself, I told my group members last Wednesday to have comments on the paper and explain if they agreed with my choices. I also asked them to claim a slide on the PowerPoint. I asked them to do both things by Friday(no specific time) so that I could do the assignment right.
I looked at both the worksheet and PowerPoint a couple of hours ago and I saw that none of them did what I had asked except for 2 of them. This is the part where I am the a-hole, but I yelled at them on our group chat and threatened to take their names off the project if they didn't have the worksheet done by Sunday at 9 am.
2 were mad at me for my threats (let's call them Bee and Honey), and 2 were on my side (Lollie and Pop). The other one wasn't active since he was at a football game.
After a couple of hours, I apologized to them for blowing up at them, but I said that I was still upset. They didn't respond to that, but they did respond to me saying that I would hold up my threat. One of them, Bee, said I had no right to threaten them, but I feel like I do. I took initiative when no one else did, and I did the work. All I had asked was that they comment on the paper and claim a slide. But Bee is pissed at me saying that I can't put deadlines on them and threaten them because they all have lives to deal with. But what about me? I have stuff going on in my life but I still did the work! If they had issues they could've said something in the chat, but Bee made it seem like we would do the project last minute.
I'm really upset because I feel like they (Bee and Honey specifically) don't appreciate that I did the work, and are mad at me for being mad at them because they hadn't done as I asked. AITA?

2023.09.08 13:42 The_Meme_Lady_69 Broken Glass Heart, Chapter 2: Old and new friends.

WRITERS NOTE: Before you read this chapter, I want to say something you should keep in mind:

It was a warm morning on the Friday of the 1915's Spring. Even if other countries were being heavily affected by the war, the Inkwell Isles were as peaceful as before. The recruitment for the British army was optional there because of the isles' population and only a few accepted to, so most people still had their lives almost unaffected. He was heading to a classroom to give his next lesson. Been working and living in that college since he got his degree in physics when he was only ten years old, he was used to most of his students being older than him. It's been just recently than most were around his age.
The students in that classroom were there for the obligatory hour of Social studies. Regardless of what career the students selected, they had to go to that class. He originally offered to teach for the students that wanted to dedicate in the chemistry area, but since he was the only one on the teacher plantel with a degree in sociology, they put him in that class for that semester. Maybe the next one he could teach chemistry or biology.
Most students were surprised to have a teacher of only 26 years and a short height was about to give them the obligatory lesson. He suspected most would like to take advantage of his age and try to befriend him so they could do him favors in case they failed his class and gain extra points. He said the same thing he told his other classes in a serious tone:
- I'll be your social studies professor for this semester. My name is Kahl Weisamkeit. - He heard some people in the back laughing but continued almost indifferently. - I want to remind you all before starting that I'm your teacher, not a friend or similar. You'll do what I request, but I will try to be fair with each of you.
Even though he has been the same height and since he was ten years old and an even lower weight than before, his serious face, small mustache, big glasses and strong voice were appropriate for someone his age. Thanks to the echo the classroom proportioned, all the students heard his voice and kept quiet as he was explaining the basics of his work form.
In comparison to other teachers, he was completely focused on his work. He lived on campus and usually worked almost the entire day thanks to teaching almost all the classes, with only a few minutes to check homeworks, projects and exams. He had the Saturdays and Sundays free, so he used it to study and gain more degrees. He was respected between students and the plantel, but was he really loved or liked? He never cared for those things, at least in the academy. Their relationship had to be professional to avoid drama and it would be a waste of time. He'd given up on finding love ever since he was 16 for a condition he was born with, and telling it to others may be a danger. He had to keep it to himself and no one else.
~~~~~
That night he went back to the small room he had been living in for a long time. As usual from Fridays, he was preparing the material for the next week's lessons, the lists of assistance and trying to organize the worksheets the newer students gave him with their basic information. There was only silence ruling the room until a ring sounded from the phone he had. He expected it to be the Principal Apollo Silverworth or maybe a student that needed help on a subject. But when he picked up the phone, the voice of a woman he remembered a bit was the one coming out of the speaker:
- Hey Kahly, how are you doing?
Even if they haven't seen the other for a while, he already knew who she was, but asked for her identity just to verify:
- Sally? Is that you?
- Who else would it be? You dummy
He was surprised to hear her. Last time they saw each was when she was almost eight years and he was ten, when her mother reported to him that his parents' illness overcame them and perished, just a few weeks before getting his first degree and moving out of his now abandoned family house. They still communicated thanks to letters even if both were now occupied with their business and adult lives.
  • It's great to talk to you again, Sally, but how did you get my number?
- Oh! I asked some of the teachers from the college that I've seen. I think I've befriended some. - She left a small chuckle and continued. - Sorry if I couldn't reach out before.
- Don't worry about it. I couldn't have done it before, this semester I'm extremely occupied with work. Giving class to almost everyone on the campus.
- Oh… - She sounded a bit disillusioned, but continued. - Ok, to the point: Tomorrow is Briney's 25th birthday. Me, Samuel and a friend of his want to invite him to dinner at my house at 6:30 PM, and we would love to see you there.
Kahl was unsure on how to respond. It's the first invitation to a social event he received after more than 15 years of constant work, but he had rarely taken a break, including summer. All the free time he had was used on studying. Would it really harm him to visit some old friends for just one afternoon? He fastly checked his schedule and answered to her:
- I may arrive thirty minutes late, but I'll try to go.
- That 's amazing! While his friend will bring the cake, the rest will be at my house. Oh! I think I haven’t given you the direction, have I?
- I think it was in an older letter. - He went to his desk, got a paper and a pen, and returned to the phone. - but please repeat it. - As she was giving him the information, he wrote it on the paper. - Thanks. I'll be there tomorrow at 7:00 PM
- Yes Kahly. Samuel and Britney would be so happy to see you again! I really hope you come tomorrow Bye bye!
- Goodbye… - she hung up the phone, so he left it where it was and went back to organize his stuff. Even if he hadn’t felt that in years, the idea of just relaxing one day with people he befriended a long time ago made him happy, but with a little doubt. Would his old friends really like him now, having lost most of his sense of humor and optimism? They all got along in letters, but would they still do it in conversations and actions? He wanted to clear his thoughts, so after finishing the last details on that day’s resume, he went to bed, trying to get those thoughts out of his head.
~~~~~
During the entire morning and half of the afternoon on that Saturday, he spent it working at a higher speed, but still trying to get quality in his analysis. More than half the students failed the diagnostic test he made from them, he may have been a little harsh in it. But that wasn’t important at the moment. After dressing up with some casual clothings, getting the small boat prototype the Arts teacher made after Kahl requested it in compensation of old favors, he locked his room. He was going down the stairs of the apartment complex where a bunch of recently graduated teachers stopped him.
- Didn't expect you to leave that room of yours today. - said a male bee in a sarcastic manner. - Where are you going with that prototype?
- With some friends. - replied Kahl quickly and with major indifference, putting the gift in a small bag.
- I didn't know you had them. - continued a female cookie, managing to hear her chuckle
Slightly annoyed at that comment, he asked with a low level of aggressiveness:
- Why would you think that?
- Well - started another woman, that being a green snake with arms - You are always in your room after work, never visit the teacher's room unless it is to give results, spend as little time in the cafeteria or eat alone. - she sounded with the desire to mock him - I honestly thought you hated people.
- I don't hate people, I just like my space, studying and working. That's all. - He was becoming uncomfortable with saying too much to those novice workmates, who knew absolutely nothing about him and most likely laughed at him. - Now if you excuse me.
He left the group of teachers and went directly to the door. He managed to hear them talking to each other again, like if they never interacted. He moved away from the campus for the first time in almost three weeks and went directly to the one floor house where his friend lived. He knocked the door the small house and saw a tall man with brown hair opening the door:
- Kahl! You are here! - he seemed really happy to see him again after all those years.
- Hello Samuel. - he replied, noticing a little excitement in his voice - Sorry for confirming yesterday and not earlier…
- Please don't worry about that. Just enter, he'll be really content to see you again.
Kahl entered the and passed to the living room, where he saw a blond woman with a beautiful light blue dress; and a black haired man with tons of facial hair, scars and tan thanks to the hours under the sun.
- Oh, Kahly! You arrived! - squealed the woman that called him before and went directly to hug him. It was the first genuine hug he received in a long time. - We are so glad to see you. - He was completely frozen at the reaction, but he returned the hug in a calm form.
- He is here?! - the hairy man asked, getting up to see the guest that recently arrived - How has been life, little buddy? - He started patting Kahl's natural lilac hair. He retained the height of a young teen, while his friends were all more than thirty centimeters taller. Usually he never let others touch him like that, but for some reason he couldn't explain himself, he felt happy to receive that form of physical affection. - Is everything OK? What has work been like?
- Please don't focus on me, Maris. Is your birthday after all. - he showed him the small prototype he brought with him - Is not much, but I think you'll like it. - The pirate held the gift his friend gave him. He was smiling in a melancholic form. The gift may have been too inappropriate. He had to apologize. - I'm so sorry Brineybeard, I didn't thought that–
- Why would you apologize? I really like it. - He sounded more uplifting than how he looked - I just wished we could have talked earlier. We've missed you.
A knock on the door killed the conversation, to which Sally went to open the door while Samuel went to sit down, inviting Kahl and Briney to do so. She went back to the living room with someone Kahl had seen before, but couldn't recall from where. The new guest was a saltshaker of really tall height, almost two meters, a robust physique, strong muscles, with some injuries and burns in his hands, most likely from kitchen incidents. Even with that impotent body type of his, his face was calming and serene, accompanied with casual clothing and a cake.
  • I know I arrived late, but the guy that usually helps me with transportation was occupied, so I had to search somewhere else.
- I get that perfectly. Just sit and I'll introduce you to my friends. - Answered Maris to his non-human friend
The man made of glass nodded, put the cake on the table and sat in a chair. He seemed a bit uncomfortable, most likely because he didn't know those people. Brineybeard continued fastly after everyone else had sit down:
- Salt, this are Sally and Samuel Stageplay… - the couple shaked their hands with the new guest - … and this is Kahl Weisamkeit - Kahl extended his hand to salute him, and when shaking, he felt his natural strength in it - I've been friends with them ever since I was a little boy.
- Good afternoon - replied with a formal vow.
- Guys, this is Saltbaker. I've met him before on some of my adventures in the sea. My crew loves his family's baking a lot.
- I hope you enjoy it here in Salt. - said Samuel with enthusiasm - Now that all five of us are here, I guess we can start the celebration.
He and Sally went to the kitchen and brought various dishes with seafood in it. During the entire dinner they were all trying to catch up with each other: that Sally and Samuel would engaging next summer, how the new college semester brought some troublemakers, Briney's crew had been searching for a legendary treasure for the last seven months; and when he felt more confident in the small group, he got revealed some details about Saltbaker. The older son of five children, heir of the bakery of his ancestral and famous family, but currently working in the college's cafeteria in order to prepare himself better.
- Oh! That's why you seemed familiar, you work in the college campus too. - Kahl mentioned to Saltbaker with some impact
- Yes… Wait, weren't you the social studies teacher that has lived on campus for the last decade?
- That's me. Nothing really interesting.
The rest of the dinner was fantastic, everyone was having an amazing time. Even if he had met most just that night, Saltbaker Ricettore had already become a member of the group. He talked in every conversation, learning more about those people he considered strangers a couple hours ago. Even if Kahl's stories were less, a lot shorter and not as interesting as the other's tales, those people seemed so interested in them that made him feel slightly overwhelmed when sharing. His personal stories were usually ignored a lot or were experienced by those in his workplace too, so no one was interested in them. Feeling heard made him feel warmth in his heart.
The delicious food, nice conversations and the sweet dessert made Kahl feel something that he hadn't felt for a long time: Security. He always had to keep a cold facade at work to avoid students and even workmates taking advantage of him, he heard people talking behind each other's backs and revealing the other's secrets when it was convenient. Having contact with those amazing people made him realize how lonely he had felt for more than 15 years. He felt bad for having to return to that life of hiding from others in order to survive, but he had to.
It was almost midnight when he had to return. After sharing his farewells to his friends and leaving that place, he felt a level of emptiness he never thought was even possible. Walking in the dark and empty streets was something he never did, not even when going for some drinks alone. Why was he feeling so hollow now, if he never felt that way when he was all by himself before? He thought that the better way of clearing it was to just go to his room and sleep, just feeling happy for an amazing afternoon with that group.
~~~~~
However, that feeling didn't leave his body, even if five entire weeks passed after that reunion. In fact, they became even worse. He still wrote to his friends and even was pleased when reading that Samuel wanted him as a groomsman in his wedding in the invitation he received, but was still feeling empty to some degree. Classes, workmates, students, the lunch breaks and the after-class work was the same, but he felt it differently. It may be something wrong with him, but what?
On the lunch break of a Monday in May, he was sitting on a bench near a tree, drinking black coffee and staring at it with an empty expression on his face. The sound of the birds reported to him that someone was coming close to him, and heard a familiar voice:
- Is someone else sitting there?
He looked up so fastly that his glasses almost fell down, and saw him. The saltshaker man from Briney's birthday. He remembered their small conversation where he mentioned that he worked there for some time before he inherited his family business. Kahl moved to the side and put his had on the unoccupied seat, responding to him with a smile and gently:
- You can sit there if you want to.
He smiled back and sat down with him, eating some homemade soup, looking at the birds and hearing their beautiful melodies. Still curious of the man sitting next to him, he asked:
- I didn't have time to ask you before, Mr. Ricettore, but how did you get in here? - the man on his left looked at him directly, maybe he accidentally offended his ability? - I ain't doubting your cooking skills, I'm just curious.
He simply chuckled and said to him in a lighthearted tone:
- Just call me Saltbaker, and don't apologize. A lot of people asked me that.
They spent the rest of the break talking about their works and some bits on the familiar side. He didn't know what it was, but talking to Saltbaker was a lot easier than he expected. Maybe his natural charisma, how interesting he seemed to be or it may be thanks to being introduced before, the barrier he usually built around people was gone. When the bell ringed, it was the indication that he had to go back in giving lessons, but before going back to that classroom, he invited him to something:
- After school, I tend to go to my room and just be there working. If you want, one of these days we can have dinner there. When you have free time obviously.
Saltbaker just looked at him, smiling and answered happily:
- Sounds like a good plan. Maybe this Wednesday I can. - he patted Kahl's head and moved back to his workplace.
Kahl got up and waved back at him as he was walking to the classroom. They may have been talking together for just a couple minutes, but that enough made him feel more complete than how he felt recently. He could try to go out of his shell more frequently, trying to spend time with those people outside of the college that were really kind and nice to him after work, still trying to be good at his job and gain more knowledge. Even if he knew he couldn't really trust some of his workmates, he still had his friend near him that he could trust.
Not sure if any of these are really a good fit for the show, but thought I’d toss them in the ring for the hell of it.
(Happy to delete this if it’s in the wrong place)
2023.08.17 00:20 SanderSo47 The history of CinemaScore – I researched every single movie with a CinemaScore for over a year. Here are some stats.
For over a year, I researched CinemaScore, going through each year and finding every single grade in existence.
This spanned from 1986 to 2022. CinemaScore was founded in 1979, yet for some reason, there's only 5 movies from 1979-1985 that have a public grade. So sadly, we won't know the CinemaScores for movies like The Empire Strikes Back, Airplane!, The Shining, Return of the Jedi, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom, Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, Back to the Future, and the best movie in the history of cinema, Commando.
The years were the following:
1980s: 1986 1987 1988 1989
1990s: 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999
2000s: 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009
2010s: 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019
2020s: 2020 2021 2022
2005 and 2006 remain the most polled years ever, with both getting 145 CinemaScores. While 2020 is, obviously, the lowest with just 36.
2000, 2005 and 2017 were the only years where every single grade had at least one movie.
All in all, there were a total of 4,448 movies that received a CinemaScore.
Movies per grade
How many movies fall on these grades?
Grade Movies Multiplier Percentage What does it mean?
A+ 104 8.04x 2.33% Generally, this indicates exceptional word of mouth and guarantees a long and healthy run. Of course, the bigger a movie opens, the weaker legs will turn out to be.
A 530 5.55x 11.91% A step down from the rare A+, but it still indicates strong word of mouth.
A– 866 4.87x 19.46% Generally, word of mouth will be good and indicates audiences like the movie, their expectations were met and nothing more.
B+ 910 3.78x 20.45% This is where things get interesting. Generally, it indicates average word of mouth. The audience didn't love it, but didn't hate it. For some niche movies, this should be a good score. But for IP-driven movies, this should be concerning as fans are more biased to the movie itself.
B 730 3.47x 16.41% Another step down, which indicates word of mouth to be below average or middling. It could still hold on pretty well, but it's not guaranteed.
B– 527 3.05x 11.84% Word of mouth is now extremely below average and indicates audiences are more disliking it.
C+ 330 2.86x 6.81% This is where generally horror movies get their ratings. For non-horror movies tho, you better hope it has a compelling premise or it will heavily drop.
C 189 2.68x 4.24% Even worse word of mouth, but some of these movies had some middling to outright terrible response.
C– 117 2.58x 2.63% The future is not bright here.
D+ 52 2.58x 1.16% Even for horror movie standards, this is outright toxic word of mouth.
D 28 2.27x 0.62% The feeling of hate grows. If your movie is advertised as something it isn't, you're doomed.
D– 14 2.42x 0.31% Even though it's above the F grade, this is the rarest grade that a movie could achieve. The movie must have pissed off nearly everyone to get this.
F 22 2.39x 0.49% The most dreaded grade. Word of mouth is completely dead and this will drop like a rock.
Highest grossing movie per grade
Grade Movie Year Studio Domestic OW Domestic Run Budget Legs Analysis
A+ Avengers: Endgame 2019 Disney $357,115,007 $858,373,000 $356M 2.40x While the legs were the third worst among all A+ movies, it does not mean that much when you get the highest grossing opening weekend in existence.
A Star Wars: The Force Awakens 2015 Disney $247,966,675 $936,662,225 $250M 3.78x Fantastic legs considering it had the record opening weekend. If you premiere on Friday December 18, that's the best possible date ever.
A– Frozen II 2019 Disney $130,263,358 $477,373,578 $150M 3.66x Considering the original earned an A+, the A– is quite a step down and among the lowest for a Disney animated movie. Nevertheless, opening the weekend before Thanksgiving really helped it.
B+ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker 2019 Disney $177,383,864 $515,202,542 $250M 2.90x Lowest in the entire franchise and its legs are quite mediocre considering it had Christmas legs.
B Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 2016 Warner Bros. $166,007,347 $330,360,194 $250M 1.99x Nothing that hasn't been said already. For every person who saw it on opening day, only three more people saw it for the rest of its run.
B– Jurassic Park III 2001 Universal $50,771,645 $181,166,115 $93M 3.57x This is skewed as it opened on Wednesday. If we factor its first five days, it had a weak 2.22x multiplier.
C+ Fifty Shades of Grey 2015 Universal $85,171,450 $166,167,230 $40M 1.95x With a huge anticipation, St. Valentine's Day on its first Saturday and poor reception, it was imminent that it would be front-loaded.
C The Last Airbender 2010 Paramount $40,325,019 $131,772,187 $150M 3.27x Another skewed one. It opened on Thursday and if we take its first four days, it had a 2.27x multiplier. That only puts things in perspective; if this panned flop could still get this much, imagine how high a well-received movie would've done.
C– The Day the Earth Stood Still 2008 Fox $30,480,153 $79,366,978 $80M 2.60x Keanu is beloved, but the mid 2000s were a rough era for him.
D+ Hereditary 2018 A24 $13,575,173 $44,069,456 $10M 3.25x Perhaps the audience on opening day was just different than the overall word of mouth, as it still got to 3x.
D The Happening 2008 Fox $30,517,109 $64,506,874 $48M 2.11x Whether if Shyamalan wanted this to be a thriller or a B-movie, the audience liked neither.
D– Vanilla Sky 2001 Paramount $25,015,518 $100,614,858 $68M 4.02x The rare scenario where critics dislike a movie and the audience hates it even more. Even if it had Christmas legs, there were more options to watch in theaters that month. Which makes it even more impressive. If it wasn't for Tom Cruise, this wouldn't make $20 million in its entire run.
F The Devil Inside 2012 Paramount $33,732,515 $53,262,945 $1M 1.58x Who would've thought a movie with no ending would get people angry? Especially one that ends with an URL just to get more information.
Leggiest movies
A movie hitting 3x is categorized as great legs. A 4x is fantastic. A 5x is extraordinary.
But in the grand scheme of things, those are some legs. Now what we have here... the legs. The Big Leagues. Here's every single movie with at least a 20x multiplier. Only the ones that got a CinemaScore.
Unsurprisingly, the 80s and 90s had the best legs.
And of those 26, 9 received the rare A+. 26 were all in the A range. Unforgiven and American Beauty are the only ones to get a B+. So we can claim that winning Best Picture means that the movie is connecting with the public.
The big A+
The most coveted grade. As mentioned, only 104 movies achieved it, and generally carried an 8.04x average multiplier. Here are the five best legs:
10 Akeelah and the Bee 2016 Lionsgate $6,011,585 $18,848,430 $6M 3.14x
Generally, the A+ means that the movie is heading for a healthy run. And while that can be the case, that does not mean the movie will be successful. Let's look at these examples:
The big fat F
Through the history of CinemaScore, we had 22 movies achieve the dreaded score. And here they are:
1 Darkness 2004 Dimension Films $4,615,762 $22,163,442 $10M 11 4.80x
22 The Devil Inside 2012 Paramount $33,732,515 $53,262,945 $1M 11 1.58x
The average multiplier for a movie with this grade is a poor 2.39x. And remember, the top two spots are skewed because they opened in Christmas Day, so the average drops with that.
In a crazy stat, 2000 has the record for most Fs given. Four movies achieved it. In an even crazier stat, Dr. T & the Women and Lost Souls got an F on the same day, and Lucky Numbers got an F just two weeks later.
F may be the worst grade, but it's not the most uncommon
So 22 movies got an F... but guess what? That's actually not the most uncommon grade.
That honor belongs to the D–. Only 14 movies achieved this grade.
14 Gigli 2003 Sony $3,753,518 $6,087,542 $75M 3 1.62x
The average multiplier for a movie with this grade is a poor 2.42x. Interestingly, the top two highest grossings are all starring Tom Cruise.
To date, Vanilla Sky is the only movie to achieve a 4x multiplier with a D–. And in the whole D range, it's the only movie to get to $100 million domestically. Nothing else comes anywhere close.
Pre-1986 movies with grades
While there's not much information about the years prior, I found 5 grades.
No. Movie Year Studio Domestic Opening Domestic Total Budget Grade Multiplier
x E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 1982 Universal $11,911,430 $439,251,124 $10.5M A+ 36.87x
And that's all we got. Thanks for reading.
These stats were all added to the sub's wiki, so you can check it whenever you want for reference.
I Love Cowboys and Cowgirls Day
-- A cowboy is an animal herder who tends cattle on ranches in North America, traditionally on horseback, and often performs a multitude of other ranch-related tasks. The historic American cowboy of the late 19th century arose from the vaquero traditions of northern Mexico and became a figure of special significance and legend. In addition to ranch work, some cowboys work for or participate in rodeos. Cowgirls, first defined as such in the late 19th century, had a less-well-documented historical role, but in the modern world have established the ability to work at virtually identical tasks and obtained considerable respect for their achievements.
2023.07.24 13:59 cerulean__blue A spelling bee movie?
I've been searching forever for this particular movie about a spelling bee (And no, it's not Akeelah and the bee)...
I know it's a long shot only remembering the ending, but guess I'd give it a try.
The main character is a young girl, and can 'see' the words she has to spell; a imaginary hummingbird hovers over the letters one at a time. She goes untill it's the last word from winning the tournament, and till the last letter. She looks at the hummingbird hovering over the last letter for a long time but doesn't answer on purpose. The other competitor gets the chance and they win, but the girl isn't upset and she smiles... Does anyone know about this movie?
