Stochastic Oscillator – How does it work and how to use it in trading?

What is the stochastic oscillator?

A stochastic oscillator chart allows you to identify momentum in the price of a financial asset. At the core of this indicator is the stochastic oscillator formula. What it does is compare the closing price of a security with the recent high and low prices. It then converts it to a figure between 0 and 100, which is the actual value of the stochastic oscillator.
Let's say you talk to two traders independently and ask them what the stochastic oscillator shows. You will most likely get two very different answers. On the one hand, the stochastic oscillator is an indicator of both up and down momentum. On the other hand, some traders may see it as an indicator of overbought and oversold prices. Both explanations are correct in theory. The fundamental difference lies in how you use the indicator within your investment strategy.

There are other factors to take into account. One of them is the period during which the low price and the high price are taken. You will need to research the ideal indicator settings for your particular trading method. Are you happy to opt for a flatter long-term trend? Alternatively, would you prefer a more sensitive short-term indicator that could alert you to short-term trading opportunities?
A brief history
There is some debate about the origins of the stochastic oscillator. Especially the %D indicators which we will cover later in this article. Many believe that C. Ralph Dystant was the original creator of the indicator. However, George C. Lane is perhaps more commonly credited with playing his role in popularizing it. The latter also introduced several tweaks and adjustments.
We can trace the stochastic oscillator itself back to the 1950s, when C. Ralph Dystant taught courses on the stock market. In these courses, his original focus was on commodities. The classes were one of the first to focus on charts, moving averages, and other indicators as a means of attempting to predict future price movements. By the way, George C. Lane supposedly started working for C Ralph Dystant in 1954. That was the same year that technical “guru” Roy Larson retired. It was a coincidence?
It would be fair to say that both C. Ralph Dystant, and George C. Lane, were integral to the creation of the stochastic oscillator indicator and the influence it still has on investors today. In many ways, the key to its success is its relative simplicity. The masterstroke introduced an easy-to-understand range between zero and 100. In the words of Kelly Johnson, former principal engineer at Lockheed Skunk Works, “keep it simple, stupid.” Many traders today refer to this quote as the KISS principle, because in English it would be “keep it simple, stupid.”
How does the stochastic oscillator work?
Now let's examine how the stochastic oscillator works. We'll also see how quickly you can adjust the sensitivity of the indicator. The basic concept behind the stochastic oscillator is momentum. It gives you the ability to monitor the price momentum of an asset. Doing so allows you to see if, compared to recent highs and lows, you are potentially oversold or overbought. However, therein lies a potential conundrum.

A simple example

What if we look at the S&P 500? The E-Mini S&P 500 futures contract is among the highest volume assets in the futures market. What will its momentum show us if we look at it? Imagine the example of shooting a rocket into the sky. It will not stop suddenly and return to earth immediately after running out of fuel. The fading momentum will continue to push you higher at a drastically decreasing speed. However, when the positive momentum finally ends, the rocket will spin and head toward the earth. As a result, you gain new momentum along the way. This is the idea behind the stochastic oscillator. Using the recent highs and lows, for comparison, you should be able to identify a change in momentum. That result should also be reflected in the graphs.
There is a general consensus that when stochastic oscillator levels fall below 20, it indicates that the asset is oversold. Meanwhile, if it moves above 80, that indicates that the asset is overbought. Let's take 50 as our average value. In theory, positive momentum is above the line, while negative momentum is below it. Although this is often the case, you should be on the lookout for potential false signals. Now let's go ahead and take a look at the ways to read and understand the Stochastic Oscillator indicator.

Stochastic Oscillator Formula and Calculation

In this section, we will look at the stochastic oscillator formula. We'll also point out which elements of the formula you can adjust to change the sensitivity. The formula is the following:
C = the most recent closing price
L14 = the lowest price traded during the last 14 trading sessions
H14 = the highest price traded during the last 14 trading sessions
%K = the current value of the stochastic indicator as a percentage
To give a practical example of how the indicator works, we will look at the S&P 500 index. This is the figure on which the E-mini S&P 500 futures contracts are based.
Current level = 3490
Low point in the last 14 trading sessions = 3300
High point in the last 14 trading sessions = 3500
The calculation is as follows:
3490-3300/3500-3300 = 190/200
(190/200) x 100 = 95%

Example

So, according to the Stochastic Oscillator indicator, the S&P 500 Index has strong momentum and is in possible “overbought” territory. Many people would classify this as the standard stochastic oscillator indicator calculation based on 14 trading sessions. However, what does the situation look like based on eight trading sessions?
Current level = 3490
Low point in the last 8 trading sessions = 3400
High point in the last 8 trading sessions = 3500
3490-3400/3500-3400 = 90/100
(90/100) x 100 = 90%
Finally, what indication does the calculation with a 30-period moving average give us?
Current level = 3490
Low point in the last 30 trading sessions = 3200
High point in the last 8 trading sessions = 3500
3490-3200/3500-3200 = 290/300
(290/300) x 100 = 97%
The shorter the period in question, the more sensitive the formula will be to daily movements. The reason is that the difference between the maximum and minimum point should be relatively small, in theory.
In the three examples above, the S&P 500 index has strong momentum for 14 and 30 days. However, it is noticeably lower if you only look at it over 8 days. And, on the other hand, they all indicate a potentially overbought scenario.

How to read stochastic oscillator charts?

Next, let's take a look at two stochastic oscillator indicator charts. We will highlight some of the turning points that could have been beneficial for traders. The first chart is the traditional (fast) stochastic oscillator indicator with a smoother %D trend line based on the %K factor.
https://preview.redd.it/vzf6c7wfme0d1.png?width=1377&format=png&auto=webp&s=512182433e3783fa53bcf9fad33fbc81b5a40bef
The second chart is what we call a “slow stochastic oscillator indicator”. It averages the index level over a longer period. Then we have the %D factor, which is based on the %K and gives an even smoother line.
The longer the period over which prices are examined, including high, low and current prices, the smoother the chart will be. However, there will be a significant delay. On the plus side, in many ways, this can help offset the short-term peaks and troughs that can sometimes tempt people to buy and sell when they shouldn't.
https://preview.redd.it/b7k655aime0d1.png?width=1420&format=png&auto=webp&s=ee2a182215d415eb4e5f7b8e528b81247e601a2a

How to use the stochastic oscillator?

The key to using the stochastic oscillator is finding the time frame that best suits your investment strategy. Those looking for short-term trading will focus on relatively short periods, which can lead to somewhat volatile changes in the indicator. Those looking for confirmation of longer-term trends will extend the period in question. These graphs will be smoother and, due to the long delay, are not as susceptible to short-term changes.

What are the best and most accurate settings?

There are three variables to consider when looking at the stochastic oscillator setup, which are:
%K = based on the number of time periods used in the calculation
Slowdown = simple moving average (SMA) factor applied to %K
%D = %K moving average factor
As we mentioned earlier, the stochastic oscillator has three different types. Among them are:

The Fast Stochastic Oscillator (Traditional Indicator)

Fast %K = basic %K calculation for 14 periods
Fast %D = Fast Stochastic Oscillator Three-Period SMA %K

The slow stochastic oscillator

Slow %K = Fast %K expressed as three-period SMA
Slow %D = Slow %K three-period SMA

The Complete Stochastic Oscillator

%K full = %K fast smoothed over a period X SMA
Full %D = Full %K Period X SMA
The beauty of this system is the fact that all previous variations of the original indicator produce figures from 0 to 100. As a result, it is easy to compare and contrast the variation in the trend lines. The longer the periods in which you calculate the simple moving average, the smoother the line will be.
As we mentioned above, the simple fast stochastic oscillator will throw up many possible overbought and oversold positions. Some of them will inevitably be false signals. As you can see from the charts above, the Fast Stochastic Oscillator can be quite volatile, frequently trading above or below the 80 and 20 levels for a short period of time. On the same chart, you can see areas where the %D (SMA figure) is not as volatile and does not always fall below or move above the 80 or 20 levels like the Fast Stochastic Oscillator does.

Trading strategies with the stochastic oscillator

There are many ways you can use the stochastic oscillator indicator to open positions, close positions or even reduce your position if the chart is at a critical point.

Identifying overbought/oversold levels

As you will see in the chart below, there are a variety of very useful indicators that could have generated some significant gains. The first overbought indicator shows the Fast Stochastic Oscillator figure reaching the 80% level and then turning sharply downwards through the three-period SMA. These crossover points are considered by many to be strong indicators that momentum is shifting and the short-term trend may be about to reverse.
The second overbought position begins to emerge when the Fast Stochastic Oscillator and the SMA move above 80%. A move above 80% or below 20% should not necessarily be seen as a signal to sell or buy, but rather as an early warning that momentum may be about to change.
https://preview.redd.it/3taqkc2kne0d1.png?width=1912&format=png&auto=webp&s=e7a55840fdae584d81ebe937210f3b3fe70ecb32
Many people prefer to wait for a sustained drop below 80% or move above 20% before reacting, thus eliminating a degree of volatility that can sometimes create false signals. This is where SMA lines can be very useful, smoother and less volatile, although you won't necessarily sell at the top due to the lag.
You can also see the two false overbought signals where the Fast Stochastic Oscillator figure and the SMA fell below 80. However, they reversed quite quickly when the momentum picked up again and the chart moved back into higher territory.
You will find that where there is a strong uptrend, which has not been broken, at some point there will be a pullback which can be an opportunity to buy into the weakness. This is the reason why the fast stochastic oscillator is more appropriate for day traders, or also for short-term traders.
Bullish/bearish divergence
There will be times when there is a bullish/bearish divergence between the actual chart and the stochastic oscillator indicator. As you can see with the chart below, the lowest point on the chart would indicate the possibility of a further decline. However, when you look at the stochastic oscillator indicator, the trend is moving in a different direction and is slightly bullish.
This may be an indication that the stock has bottomed and momentum may be about to change. One of the main signals to watch out for with this particular chart is the fast stochastic oscillator moving through the SMA line.
https://preview.redd.it/rku5zd2joe0d1.png?width=1087&format=png&auto=webp&s=e6583cea6a63f18ed49327c4f626a39608b9e016
You are equally likely to see a reversal where the main chart indicates an intact uptrend, while the stochastic oscillator shows a slowdown in momentum and a turn towards a downtrend. These are some of the rarest trading signals, but they are very interesting, especially when you incorporate simple trend lines into price charts.

Price trend

The relationship between the Fast Stochastic Oscillator and the SMA is very important. As you can see in the chart below, the first section is dominated by the strong downtrend with the Fast Stochastic Oscillator and the SMA descending in parallel.
Then there is a bounce on the chart followed by a move into choppy waters with an obvious downtrend. As you will see, both indicators remain below the 20% level, indicating that the momentum is relatively weak. That is until the Fast Stochastic Oscillator breaks the SMA line towards the end of the choppy price action area.
https://preview.redd.it/v5d3gkatoe0d1.png?width=520&format=png&auto=webp&s=caa386e1e0e6979fc9210fe18c06c0e3acb9738b
This change in momentum is demonstrated by the uptrend, although it is not difficult to see where the momentum begins to fade above 80%. When the short-term trend line breaks through the SMA and falls below the 80% level, this indicates another change in the trend – a possible sell signal.

Advantages of using the stochastic oscillator

Momentum is very important when it comes to trading and there is no doubt that the stochastic oscillator indicator is a very useful tool. There are a number of advantages to consider which include: –

Sensitive to impulse change

The shorter the period during which the high, low and current price are compared, the more volatile the stochastic oscillator indicator will be. Using SMA trend lines can also create very strong buy/sell signals when the lines cross, especially above 80% and below 20%. This event would indicate that the short-term trend is changing and assuming it continues, a new trend will follow.

Opportunity to identify bullish/bearish divergence

Due to the way the Stochastic Oscillator indicator is calculated, you will sometimes see a divergence between the price chart and the indicator. While the price chart may indicate that a downtrend is still intact, the stochastic oscillator chart may already be identifying a change in momentum before the price changes. As you will see in the chart above, these can be powerful trading signals. How long you can wait to see if a new trend emerges will vary between traders. How brave are you?

The formula is flexible

The shorter the period in question, the more volatile the stochastic oscillator indicator will be. However, there is the possibility of identifying short-term trading opportunities. However, for those who have a longer-term investment strategy, they can extend the number of periods in question. This will flatten the line of the Fast and Volatile Stochastic Oscillator and give a smoother line, which can make it easier to identify any changes in long-term trends.

Risks and limitations of the indicator

As with any technical indicator, the stochastic oscillator is not immune to false signals and is probably best used in conjunction with other trading indicators. Risks and limitations include:

False signals

The shorter the period over which the fast stochastic oscillator is calculated, the more susceptible it is to extreme volatility. This can create numerous false signals, although the impact can be reduced by adding a simple moving average line.

Sideways Trading

The indicator works best when there is a new uptrend, a downtrend or perhaps a short, sharp period of consolidation before the trend re-emerges. During periods of sideways trading, this can create a relatively small gap between the high and low points, therefore creating sharp movements in the indicator on relatively small price movements.

SMA lines delay trend changes

Using longer periods to calculate %K and SMA trend lines can make it easier to identify changes in the trend. However, due to the delay, you may miss a significant element of a changing trend before you decide to buy or sell. You can adjust the variables of the full stochastic oscillator indicator to help you with your specific investment strategy, lengthening or shortening the periods and adjusting the SMA.

Stochastic Oscillator vs Other Indicators

The Stochastic Oscillator indicator is extremely flexible and you can adjust the periods and SMA variables to suit your trading plan. However, especially when looking at limited periods, there will be times when the indicator will create a false signal. Therefore, it is wise to consider other means of technical analysis to clarify whether a potential change in momentum indicated by the stochastic oscillator is also reflected elsewhere.

Stochastic Oscillator vs RSI

While it is true that you can use both the stochastic oscillator and the RSI (Relative Strength Index) to measure price momentum, they work on very different principles. The RSI measures potential overbought/oversold positions by comparing recent gains to recent losses. The idea behind the stochastic oscillator is based on the assumption that the current price should follow the current trend. When the current price moves against the trend, it can indicate a change in momentum and a possible buy/sell signal. So who wins the fight, the Stochastic Oscillator or the RSI?
If the two oscillators indicated the same trend, this would be a powerful signal for investors. For example, if the price of an asset moved towards the upper end of its recent high/low range, it would indicate positive momentum. Assuming that the RSI oscillator is also showing a relatively strong trend, this would reduce the chances of a false signal.

Stochastic Oscillator vs MACD

The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) is a prominent momentum indicator, although it is very different from the stochastic oscillator indicator. The MACD is calculated by subtracting the 26-period exponential moving average from the 12-period exponential moving average. Many traders use the MACD technical indicator in conjunction with the stochastic oscillator, often looking for crossover points between the two.
Those who consider technical indicators from a distance might wonder why traders don't simply use three, four, five or more technical indicators together. The answer is simple: the time lag between different technical indicators can confuse the situation.
By the time several different indicators have “aligned”, you may end up missing the vast majority of the trend. There is nothing wrong with using a single technical indicator, but there are risks and false signals can and do occur.

2024.05.07 16:27 A5H442 Review of heart pt. 6 and it’s context and future in the beef

Sorry but this is going to be a long ass essay post ☠️☠️☠️ I haven’t slept and am yapping
Overall, a weak defence and weak diss track but maybe not 100% trash as ppl make it out to be. It has some gd qualities but it is ultimately damage control, poorly executed and an attempt to get the last word in when the battle is already likely lost. Or at least seems lost for Drake, judging by what he said in the end monologue and just overall public perception of Kendrick being on top and poor reception of the heart pt.6.
Before we move on, yes, I do have a kendrick bias. The man is my goat 🐐 Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong about anything on the track.
Good things about the track first,
I didn’t like it being brought up due to intentional lack of context but it was good for drake to mention this and paint Kendrick as a hypocrite I guess. Correct me if I’m wrong I don’t think it was kdot himself but Punch who did this although I think XXXtentacion may have thanked kdot in a similar situation. (I don’t remember properly tbh)
The bad things… Summarised - the entire approach was terrible and the majority of the angles used were either bad and/or poorly executed, especially how he tries to dismiss PDF allegations.
He does this by saying that the 11yr old daughter thing was intentionally leaked misinformation. But there’s reasons this isn’t really working for Drake. Before I say more, I want to say that I don’t think Drake actually has an 11yr old daughter but I don’t think Drake intentionally leaked this info. I think kendrick was just misinformed by a bad source - nothing more. Regardless, the idea of an intentional leak isn’t a good look for Drake. It’s not the chess move he makes it out to be. reason is that if it was true, it proves Kendrick’s claim of him being fake, an actor and master manipulator and why is he focusing on this as a chess move instead of the Drizzler accusations??!! A major reason why it doesn’t work is that why would he spread a lie about himself that reminds people about him being a deadbeat and furthers his deadbeat reputation. Why not lie about something else (and make it more believable)? Why give that lie to a talented writer like Kendrick and let him run with that lie and use it for two whole days in a story of Adidon sequel that shatters the whole public perception of him winning the rap beef. Why would he let that track marinate for two days, instead of saying he had intentionally leaked the daughter info right after Meet the Grahams? He wouldn’t even have had to drop a whole response track to say it. He could have just posted an IG story saying that he did that. Instead he just straight denied it via his IG story with no evidence and waited two days to reveal he intentionally leaked with no evidence to back up the leak. To the public, due to the time taken, it either seems Drake is lying about intentional leaks (and is crowdsourcing inspiration from his own fans on social media because they were making theories about leaks) or either he looks incompetent if he is telling the truth. Bcos why would he have no evidence about a planned leak especially if he is asking kendrick to pull up with receipts and why would he take two whole days to reveal the planned leak like it was some master war general move.
We all know Drake is capable of releasing tracks quickly and Heart part 6 seems to be written after Not Like Us. So why would he respond so late especially after Kendrick dropped a club bop that hammered Drake down (no drizzy). Overall, this rebuttal is either a bad lie or a bad truth but it’s shitty damage control either way
The domestic violence seems to also be a desperate claim and is covered by the breakfast club interview where kdot addresses it. Also, I think the initial story remains unverified (Correct me if I’m wrong). Why talk about Kendrick and the mother of his children being potentially distant/ legally separated as if it’s a bad thing? Lots of couples are separated and it’s very normalised. If it is a bad thing, what does that say about Drakes own parents? Why mock Kendrick for not being close to his partner and mother of his children, especially considering the situation with Adonis m? I feel like Drake uses very shallow things to jump to conclusion which makes it seem like he’s lying, why does Dave free liking a post and leaving a comment, mean he is fathering a child and why does a non-follow mean a couple is split? Drake just seems too chronically online if this is his thought process but hey idk
He shouldn’t have intentionally lied about Kendrick being touched instead of his mother and should’ve approached it with a different calm tone, (almost like a therapist exactly like kendrick occasionally does in his songs), pointing out Kendricks failing to his mother in using pedophilia as a serious smear against him with little evidence. A commercial rapper kicking knowledge to a conscious rapper and flipping the script like that in a calm tone would probably be pretty disrespectful and well received due to valid criticism. That being said, Drake just doesn’t know how to use his range to accomplish that and probably doesn’t care - he just went for what he thought would be most disrespectful and didn’t think that the subject matter would blow up in his face like it did. Also, I think he underestimated how strong the PDF label on him was and how sinister normal people find PDF allegations on celebs and how intense the shock factor of Meet the Grahams 2nd verse was to the listener.
The fame shield was pretty funny because it honestly shows how some peoples minds become so far removed from reality and how they think other ppl perceive society as opposed to themselves when they get some fame and live a certain lifestyle. What do you mean you’re too famous to be a pedophile Drake??? Why did he think that would be well received? I’ll try not to say too much about this because its so obvious and you all would understand if you heard what he said and have common knowledge about MJ going to a trial (when he was probs the most famous man in the world) and the decades of freedom, fame and acclaim certified PDF celebs have had (R Kelly, Saville, Polanski, Epstein, etc.). Also talking about himself and how much he isn’t a pdf just makes him look like a pdf. Did no one in the OVO sweatshop say anything? Or were they worried that if anyone said anything wrong, they’d be banished to the studio basement and chained to a workbench eternally cooking up hits like Jesse was in the last episodes of breaking bad?
In Drake’s defense, I would kinda somewhat understand this idea if Drake, being as big as he is, was absolutely 100% squeaky clean in terms of rep and had no “smoke/fire” in terms of speculation/rumours about being a dodgy ped. But that isn’t the case. There have been rumours/speculation about Drake for years about him being dodgy with minors. Is there any solid evidence of him being a PDF? No, no smoking gun so it’s hard to say he is a PDF but there are a lot of rumours and speculation nonetheless. We’ve seen him in relationships with questionable age gaps and we’ve seen him kiss teenagers on stage and make weird comments about their body when finding out they’re a teenager. He also think it’s normal to be an adult and go out of his way to slide into the dms of a teenage girl and start being weirdly friendly and giving them advice about boys and relationships. He chose the wrong angle to defend against the claim. Since the claim was thrown with little evidence from Kendrick himself, Drake should’ve been able to better defend against it, but man did he fumble.
Right now, Kendrick is still up but he might still respond for the sake of a wider victory and letting the stock (5+5 or whatever) off, just to finish Drake and make sure he doesn’t maintain commercial success, like he did after story of Adidon. Alternatively, Drake could drop again and a lot harder, forcing Kendrick to reply. Also, narratives can easily change on social media, forcing another drop from anybody. But I haven’t slept so maybe I’m just rambling and overthinking stuff. Let me know what you think

2024.05.05 18:49 Roxycharlie1 Struggling to maintain a relationship with my half-sister who possibly has borderline disorder.

I will try to make a long story short. I’m from Canada. For context, my parents separated when I (33F) was 1 yo. My mother had almost full custody of me and had my sister (29 F) and my brother with my stepdad before she passed away from an allergic reaction when we were 7, 3 and 1½ yo. I then went to live full time with my dad (and had two more half-sisters), and my stepdad started living with a woman (Cythia) and her 5 children. Well, Cynthia abused all her children but especially Anna, my sister, both verbally and physically. My stepdad also was physically and verbally violent towards my sister. My mother’s family never did anything, even though they knew what was going on. Her grandmother and aunt on her father’s side called CPS, and Anna was taken into a youth centre. But then they got more abusive towards our brother who called her, and she then said to CPS that she lied so that she could go back home and protect our brother. For a long time, I felt guilty that I couldn’t protect her. I witnessed some of the abused when I was 7 or 8 years old and asked my dad not to go anymore.
Fast forward when she’s 18, and in love with JC, also her age. I worry about her becoming pregnant because she’s in a precarious situation, and her stepmom comes from a line of 16 yo mothers (literally, Cynthia’s mother was a great-grand-mother at 48 yo). She gets pregnant and has Anthony (9M) and Clementine (8F), 10 months apart. I’m Anthony’s godmother as well. At the time that my sister was pregnant, we had a bit of a spat because I tried to tell her the gentlest way possible that it took money to take care of a baby (because she wasn’t seeing any problems with her having a child, and she even told me that at least he was going to love her). At that time, I also told her that I was her sister, and not her mother (I was feeling a lot of pressure). My sister treats money like it burns her hands. She struggles not to spend everything at once and even got into big debt a couple of times. She also complains a lot about here situation and string of bad luck in life.
So during the last 9 years I:
-Took care of Anthony and Clementine when asked, but also one evening a night during a year.
-Took them out and paid for a lot of activities, like the zoo, because my sister told me she didn’t have any money.
-Hosted some birthday parties at my house because my sister didn't have the place.
-Gave them more costly gifts than any other friend or family member because I felt like they needed it, like a slow cooker or a bike for the kids. I am by no means rich, but I’m generous and what to help.
-Helped her go through several breakups and 2 miscarriages (buying groceries, coming to help her with the kids and cleaning).
-Lent her some money on a couple occasions for her to pay her rent (she then paid me back in full, but my husband and I gave her 800$ of her debt to us).
-Did some tutoring to my nephews and helped her with some situations happening at their school, because I teach in the same school board. For the last 3 years, the children moved 3 times and had 3 different schools. Anthony never finished a school year at school (he was even suspended from school in kindergarten, and he is now finishing his 3rd grade).
When I do something or want something from my sister, I have to constantly remind her because Anna, Anthony and Clementine all have ADHD. My sister uses this as an excuse to everything she forgets. And when someone tries to give her advice, she always say that this or that doesn’t work for her for X reason. I bought Anthony some soccer classes, but he went to a handful of them because she always forgot about them.
My relationship with my sister got better during the pandemic, until she decided to become a foster parent to her stepsister Kelly (16 or 17 yo at the time), without consulting her then boyfriend (she sold almost everything she had to go live with him, and they were together almost 3 years). My sister was doing her best before and put her children first. But when Kelly lived with her, it’s like Anna was back into her stepmother’s mindset. She isn’t physically abusive to her children, but she yells at them, calls them names sometimes. Anthony is clearly the golden child (she when to a neuropsychiatrist for him (we have the confirmation that he is suspected of having autism), and he had braces to straighten his teeth, she always said she understands him and praises him a lot) She spends a lot of time trying to accommodate him and make him happy. She belittles Clementine a lot, even in front of her. She doesn’t do her homework or give her the attention she needs.
Last summer, Anna moved with all 3 of them to my town (before they lived about 20 to 40 minutes away). I helped her lease a town house with 3 levels and a back yard so she could start her daycare. I was so happy that my sister moved closer to where I was and wanted to help more with her children, like helping with their homework. I took Clementine in Monday’s after school until the end of November to help with her reading (she was reading books to my 2 yo). When Anthony got suspended from school, I was the one to home school him (paid 1h a day by the school board but did more to help my sister out).
She had 2 cats in her apartment but took 2 more when she arrived. They don’t have enough litter boxes and they are regularly urine and feces elsewhere, even on their beds.
At that time, I was on maternity leave at the time and our first daycare shut down for my now 2½ yo. Where I’m from, daycare places are almost as rare as winning the lottery, especially for infants. When my sister opened in November, I was struggling with post-partum depression, so I thought that sending both my daughters (2 and 8 mo at the time) there was the right thing to do. Now this was before I witnessed all the verbal abuse going on. Once, I went by to get something because my children were sick, and she screamed at her kids in front of the other daycare children.
We talked a lot at that time, I was trying to be supportive. One time she told me dismissively that her doctor though she had borderline personality disorder. This explains A LOT.
I was fine helping Anna out because I had been luckier in life than she has. I was sometimes a bit peeved because it never seemed enough.
Well, this winter, my luck turned. I was just starting to heal from my depression and my husband fell hard into a PPD as well. He was anxious, having anxiety attacks and even screamed at me in front of the children. This was a hard no for me and said he had to start therapy, but his first therapist was not working for him. That was a hard boundary for me, but unfortunately, things got worse, and I accompanied him 3 times to the hospital in the span of a month because he threatened to unalive himself. CPS got involved because he also threatened the first responders. It was decided that he would stay at a friend’s house for at least a month.
During that time, my sister would bitch about the change in my husband's demeanour. She complained to me that he didn’t say hi or smiled enough for her. She was really happy when I was a solo parent because I could finally understand her struggles (her words).
I’m glad to say that my husband and I did couples and both individual therapies. I even saw an occupational therapist that confirmed that I was hypersensitive, as is my eldest daughter. My daughter also started verbalizing her needs, so that helped us too (she was not really speaking before February) . We are now striving.
Well, not two weeks after my husband and I started to live together again, my sister told me she would not be renewing our daycare contract (it was ending in two weeks). She basically told my husband one morning when he was dropping the kids off. He told her that she had to tell me this in person, so he took her home (the children were supervised by her assistant). She basically told us:’’ It’s not you, it’s me. I can’t handle being an aunt, and a sister and an educator. ‘’ She said when I asked that she preferred we respected the contract and stop in two weeks, but she could give us up to a month.
I really felt backstabbed and betrayed. I tried to take it the best way possible. I was nervous that she would not take care of my daughters properly because she was really spiralling at the time, not going out of her house (not even to go to the pharmacy to get her children’s medication). She told me that she wasn’t talking to any of her friends. The children in daycare were always sick and she would refuse for children to go for silly reasons.
Luckily we found the best daycare possible for our daughters (it really is a miracle), and my eldest started right after the two weeks were up.
My sister had some papers to make me sign, and I seemed important that I do so before Easter, but she forgot to come by at our established time. A lot of back and forth happened during the next week, as I also wanted to gat back an item that I lent her and a bottle (we only had 3). She wasn’t really responding to my messages or was always busy. As I said, she doesn’t go out. So on Monday the week after, I got fed up and told here that I was coming by to pick up the items and that I could sign her papers then. When I arrived, she told me that she lost the item (I found it on marketplace for 40$ but is was over 100$ of value). She had the bottle (and it clearly had been used for other children), but the papers weren’t ready. I asked her if I could help her look for the thing while she finished up with the day care. She said yes. Anthony was there, so I asked him if he knew where the thing was (children could have played with it). He said he didn’t know, but he was wiling to help look. When he suggested to look in his sister’s room, Anna started yelling at him that she already looked there. I was so baffled by this outburst that I told her ‘’no need to yell’’. I then went to look in the basement. I think I saw urine marks on the couch. The floor was covered in toys. My nephew doesn’t have a room, he sleeps in the basement living room. Just the smell was horrible.
I went back up, and Anna was still struggling to fill out the forms. She then had to copy 2 more times the same information. I offered her to copy them for her, as she has trouble concentrating because of her ADHD. She told me no, it’s my responsibility to do it (in a bitchy tone). I told here again that I could help her and do it for her. She yelled at me that she doesn’t need help and that she doesn’t tolerate being undermined in her own home. I asked her what she meant by that. And she was blaming me for telling her not to yell in front of Anthony. I was stunned. I sat there and almost cried, but then just decided to leave with my daughter’s bottle.
I thought about it a lot and 4 days later called CPS and told them what was happening at my sister’s house. It’s supposed to be anonymous, but it never really is. I. It was never my intention for CPS to take the children away, but I wanted it to be a wake-up call for my sister that she was on the wrong path for her children’s well-being. She sent me a text saying that she knew that I talked to CPS and that they had already been called 7 times!! ( I knew about 1 time that she called herself because Anthony had run away from school and she didn’t know what to do anymore). And that if she wasn’t a bad mother because CPS hasn’t taken her children away !! She latter apologised for yelling at me and said to me that she needed to go no contact for a while to calm down.
Well, I don’t think she would have contacted me again if it wasn’t for Anthony being homeschooled for the rest of the year. I was supposed to take him to play lasertag on Monday (it was a Ped day). I asked my sister and then reminded her 2 time. On Sunday night, she told my he had an appointment at 2. I called her and told her I was upset because I asked her multiple times if Anthony could come and if it was ok with her, and that I felt like she was purposefully sabotaging our moment out together. She then confessed that he was schooled at home for the rest of the year and that his music teacher was coming at her house during that time. She then told me that maybe she would be forced to ask me help because the music teacher couldn’t do all the required hours (5 a week). I was hurt and told her so, because Anthony and I had a great time last time I homeschooled him. I didn’t have any problems with him because we have a strong bond. My sister doesn’t have any place during the day for homeschooling, because all of he first floor is dedicated to the day care. She could set up the basement, but I as mentioned, it always looks like a tornado just passed.
Well Tuesday night I get a text message saying that she wanted to talk. She told me that it went badly with the music teacher (I wasn’t surprised), and that she wanted me to home school Anthony. I told her ok for this week, but we would have to have a conversation with her before I committed myself for the rest of the school year ( I took a longer maternity leave because I wanted to start teaching again only in September).
So Friday my husband took care of all 4 kids while I went to the restaurant to speak with my sister. Her thoughts were very chaotic and I had to go back a couple time to clarify that is she wanted Anthony to succeed this year, he would have to do some schoolwork at home too. She went on and on again about all the things that don’t work to her liking in her life. She spoke about how Clementine regressed so much in school that she forgot how to write the word mother and that she throws a lot of tantrums. I saw one of her tantrums and I suspect she also has autism. I suggested to me sister that she should have solid habits for the morning and evening. My sister told me she hates routines and can’t put them in place. Everytime I give her solicited advice, she complains on how she can’t do this or that. She also proceeded to bitch about all the people in her life (Kelly, her close friend, her children that leave the house a mess, etc.) She has a pattern of cutting people out of her life.
Sorry for the long post, I had to get all this off my chest. It was a lot to deal with. Honestly, I’m done trying to help her. When the children were young, she was trying to do the right thing, but now it seems like she’s given up. I will say in Anthony’s and Clementine’s lives for their sakes, because they have been let down by so many people in their lives (their dad told them when they were 5 that he couldn’t take them to Disney land because of the attorney fee’s their mom forced him to pay).
If any random stranger went through something similar, I’m open for advice.
I love my sister, I care about her, but I’m tired of feeling like I’m being used.

I think the dust has long since settled and it's now safe to tell the story of how we got back at the monster-in-law. And, my dear petty queen of potatoes...this is for you.
All names have been changed to protect the innocent.
Years ago, my friend, Kelly, got engaged to the love of her life, Franky. Franky is a sweet, well mannered guy who treats Kelly like she's the only woman in the world. Everyone was happy...except for Franky's mom, Christine.
Christine was a boymom before boymoms became a meme on the web. Clingy, overprotective, cringey, the works. No girl would ever be good enough for her Franky. She made a girl in his kindergarten class cry because the girl had given him an innocent peck on the cheek. The last straw for Franky was when Christine decided to go to Franky's senior prom...as his date. Yes. You read that right, dear reader. She got the corsage, an appointment for her haimakeup and a dress that wasn't appropriate for a middle aged mom that was losing her looks. Franky enlisted in the Marines and cut off all ties for two years. A few years before he met Kelly, Franky and Christine decided to rebuild their relationship after his grandpa (Christine's father) died and she actually respected the boundaries Franky put in place.
But I guess Christine wanted to marry Franky or something, I don't know. She'd use backhanded compliments in regards with meals Kelly cooked, how she dressed, how she talked, etc. Fortunately, thanks to his time in the Marines, Franky has a shiny spine and Kelly has an even shinier one. They both told Christine off and she'd back down.
When Franky and Kelly told Christine that they were getting married, she immediately told them she was going to gift them the wedding reception (venue, food, drink, DJ, the works). She had been saving up for years, apparently. Franky and Kelly tried to politely decline as they both had a strange feeling this would come with strings attached. However, Christine kept insisting.
We spent the whole wedding planning period waiting for her hijinks...but things went well. Other than a couple of objections due to an aunt's allergies or something like that, Christine let them have free reign. Things were going so well that Kelly even invited Christine to go dress shopping.
But then the cloud covered the sun. A few days before the wedding, we all checked into the hotel we were staying at. One of our friends (Grace) was the makeup/hair artist and she visited each of the members in the wedding party to talk makeup and logistics. One of the people she visited was Christine at her room. While they were together, Christine made a comment about how the makeup was going to make her feel like a bride. Grace got suspicious and waited until Christine went to use the bathroom to examine the closet.
Yep. You guessed right. Christine had gotten an identical copy of Kelly's wedding dress! She probably insisted on paying for the venue because she figured they wouldn't risk losing the reception.
Grace immediately took a picture and sent it to Franky and Kelly along with a warning. The wedding party, including myself (I was a bridesmaid), Franky and Kelly all got together to talk about what to do. The happy couple was worried that if they confronted Christine directly, she'd do something awful at the reception. Given Franky's past history with her, she was capable of anything.
That's when Meg, the MOH spoke up. Meg had always been a bit of a pistol and ooh boy were we all happy with this idea.
The wedding and reception was being held at this gorgeous historic manor that had been renovated into a venue. The second floor has a wrap around porch that goes all around the building. Meg's idea was simple. Two of us would stand on the second floor with two sets of buckets. One would be filled with fake flower petals. The other set would be filled with something else...I decided to up the ante and purchased two Nerf Super Soakers and as much cheap box burgundy that I could get on sale (with Kelly and Franky's enthusiastic permission of course).
So myself, Meg, and two groomsmen (Mike and Lenny, two of Franky's fellow Marines) stood out front with our weapons as the guests arrived. I'm a theater nut so I came up with a little script. Guests arriving would be asked by Meg and myself (who were on the balcony) to halt and state their purpose. Those who gave satisfactory answers (ie anyone who wasn't Christine) would have the petals scattered over their heads and Mike and Lenny would give a respectful salute and the guests would be granted access.
Most of the guests loved it and even gave us some really funny and awesome answers. Then Christine arrived...and yep. She was wearing the dress. Meg and I looked at each other and we put down our flower petal buckets and picked up the other buckets. Mike and Lenny stood at attention. I asked Christine to halt and state her purpose.
Amazingly, she stopped and said "I am here to attend my son's wedding." Granted, we had a backup plan but we're still surprised it worked.
Meg said "Then we have a gift for you." Then we dumped the contents of the buckets on her head.
We had raided every art supply store in town of all the glitter they had. Now if you don't know anything about glitter...it gets everywhere and is darn nigh impossible to remove...as anyone who has ever done theatedance can attest.
As Christine screamed, Lenny and Mike sprayed her with the Super Soakers filled with cheap box burgundy. Meg told her in a cold voice "Get out of here before we call the cops."
Christine left and Mike texted the happy couple to let them know. Franky and Kelly then proceeded to text her that they knew what she had planned and that they were cutting ties for good. They blocked her and we proceeded to have fun. Granted, we had to help clean up the glitter and spilled wine but it was worth it.
Was it cruel? It was. Was it delicious? You bet.

Hey guys,
I'm back with some of the best longform profiles I've found this week. You can also subscribe here if you want to get the weekly newsletter in your inbox. Any feedback or suggestions, please let me know!
***
👮‍♂️ The Devil Went Down to Georgia
Hallie Lieberman // The Atavist Magazine
There were men who said they’d narrowly escaped the Handcuff Man, and rumors that some of his victims hadn’t survived. But there were also people who thought that he was nothing more than an urban legend. Jordan’s assault would bring the truth to light: Not only did the Handcuff Man exist, but there were people in Atlanta who knew his name, including members of the police force. He hadn’t been caught because, it seemed, no one was trying in earnest to catch him.
👩‍🦳 Julia Louis-Dreyfus Thinks Youth Is Overrated
Jancee Dunn // The New York Times
I’m really enjoying my 60s, but I would say my 50s. And by the way, you know how much I loved it? I got breast cancer in my 50s and I still loved it. I just generally felt more confident about who I was as a human being.
💥 The Children Who Lost Limbs in Gaza
Eliza Griswold // The New Yorker
Gazal was wounded on November 10th, when, as her family fled Gaza City’s Al-Shifa hospital, shrapnel pierced her left calf. To stop the bleeding, a doctor, who had no access to antiseptic or anesthesia, heated the blade of a kitchen knife and cauterized the wound. Within days, the gash ran with pus and began to smell.
🎙️ Andrew Huberman’s Mechanisms of Control
Kerry Howley // New York Magazine
Huberman sells a dream of control down to the cellular level. But something has gone wrong. In the midst of immense fame, a chasm has opened between the podcaster preaching dopaminergic restraint and a man, with newfound wealth, with access to a world unseen by most professors. The problem with a man always working on himself is that he may also be working on you.
🏀 Meet NC State's Jannah Eissa, the ACC's first hijab-wearing basketball player
Lindsay Gibbs // Power Plays
“If I was less than anyone else, I wouldn't be on this team. If I was less than anyone else, I would just not be playing basketball on this level,” she said. “And if anyone thinks that I’m less, then they're the ones that are less. That's it.”
🎧 Inside Yo Gotti’s $100 Million Music Empire (🔒 paywall link)
Jabari Young // Forbes
Inspired by one of his mentors, billionaire hip-hop mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Gotti began taking business classes at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management in December with a focus on corporate valuation. “I may want to buy a company or acquire another company,” says Gotti, who never finished college. “So I’m making sure I’m supertight—and understand the language and the verbiage myself other than listening” to financial experts.
🎲 How a bankrupt bettor became the bookie at the center of an MLB scandal (🔒 paywall link)
Gus Garcia-Roberts, Albert Samaha // The Washington Post
On Wednesday, Bowyer, 48, was thrust into the global spotlight amid a bizarre and explosive news story enveloping one of the best known, highest paid — and until this week, most scandal-free — figures in sports, Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani.
🖋️ Maria Popova's vivid life in the margins
Brian Braiker // Brooklyn Magazine
We live in uncertain times. The craving for certainty is so dominant and so overwhelming that we lose so much of the nuance and mystery and uncertainty that are the wellspring of wonder in life. And I think fundamentally we all crave a life of wonder. What else is there? In love, in beauty, and all those things, there’s this undertone of wonder that is what makes them satisfying.
💡 Hal Malchow Is Going to Die on Thursday. He Has One Last Message for Democrats.
Sasha Issenberg // Politico
After his mother’s untimely death, in 1990, Malchow was intent on never letting himself endure the same thing. If he showed symptoms for Alzheimer’s, Malchow resolved at the time, he would take his life before he became too diminished — and became a burden to those around him.
⚖️ At four, I was kidnapped and sex-trafficked for years. Now I fight for the powerless – and win every case
Annie Kelly // The Guardian
In the moments after his kidnapping, Salazar-Hobson remembers sitting in the back of the car with his small legs sticking out in front of him, looking at the new shoes his kidnappers had bought for him a few months before. “I remember riding in that car with John and Sarah Hobson not saying a word to me and I just knew how terrible it was going to be,” he says.
🪖 The journey of war veteran Rich Fierro, a ‘hero’ of the Club Q shooting (🔒 paywall link)
Dan Zak // The Washington Post
Combat vets forged deep bonds in harsh environments, and they returned to their families in a disorienting peace that could be dogged by anger, depression, paranoia, survivor’s guilt and thoughts of suicide. Some had a hard time determining when they were safe and when they weren’t. Family members had become strangers, and strangers became potential adversaries.
🇬🇧 The Mayor of London Enters the Bullshit Cinematic Universe
Peter Guest // WIRED
Social media algorithms drive the madness. When mainstream media and politicians start using the same terminology as the conspiracy groups, it can drive a flywheel of attention. It also helps to have a unifying figure who brings together multiple conspiracy constituencies. Which is how Sadiq Khan—liberal, left-wing, Muslim—got sucked into the vortex.
🎥 How Radu Jude Made the Defining Movie of the TikTok Era
Edward Frumkin // Interview Magazine
Because, at the same time that TikTok is taking your data and whatever, it’s really a kind of vernacular cinema. It’s really striking sometimes and really, really powerful and really, really creative and inspiring in many ways. Not everything, and not always, of course.
🤖 In 40 years as a founder-CEO, Michael Dell turned his dorm-room PC company into a tech giant. Can he cash in on the AI boom? (🔒 paywall link)
Michal Lev-Ram // Fortune
“It feels every bit as big as previous waves, but probably bigger,” he says, pondering the question, and then adds, “You know, maybe quite a bit bigger.” He takes another brief pause, reconsiders his own words, and delivers a most inconclusive conclusion: “I don’t know for sure. Nobody knows.”
📝 Author Hanif Abdurraqib on Writing About LeBron, Loving Ohio, and the Seductive Power of Nike Commercials
Tres Dean // GQ
That meant coming to terms with the fact that I am not going to live long enough to be forgiven by everyone I've ever wronged. That is something to me that frightens me. The fact that forgiveness is not this limitless pool that we can reach into and pull from whenever we want to, it frightens me.
🥤 Meet the Influencer Who “Reverses” Lupus—With Smoothies
Julia Métraux // Mother Jones
On their own, some of Goldner’s smoothies look pretty good, like her “daily drinker” of raw kale, spinach, chard, frozen bananas, mangoes, and flax seeds. Some of those ingredients can benefit the immune system, but no analysis of peer-reviewed studies exists to show that vegan smoothies are as helpful in managing symptoms as, for instance, hydroxychloroquine.
📱 ‘It’s Causing Them to Drop Out of Life’: How Phones Warped Gen Z
Marc Novicoff // Politico
Video games gave boys huge amounts of shallow social connection and caused them to feel lonelier. Social media gave girls huge amounts of shallow and competitive social connection and it made them feel lonelier. So I don’t think much was gained from the switch from real life to virtual. And I think there’d be minimal cost to reducing screen use in middle school by 90 percent.
🎬 Sydney Sweeney on ‘Immaculate,’ a Rom-Com Reunion With Glen Powell and the ‘Weird’ Way People Talk About Her Body: ‘They Believe I’ve Signed My Life Away’
Daniel D'Addario // Variety
People feel connected and free to be able to speak about me in whatever way they want, because they believe that I’ve signed my life away. That I’m not on a human level anymore, because I’m an actor. That these characters are for everybody else, but then me as Sydney is not for me anymore.
🌑 The Darkness That Blew My Mind
Tim Neville // Outside
Deep down I hoped that the dark might help rekindle a sense of purpose left bruised and bloodied by the pandemic. I figured I could treat it the way I treat travel to some of the difficult places my work has taken me. I would be curious and open, come what may. Doing that rarely leads to disappointment.
💰 The Confessions of Inigo Philbrick, Art Fraudster Extraordinaire
Mark Seal // Vanity Fair
“I always drank too much,” he concedes in one of our exchanges, “but would always stagger away with a couple of deals done…. I spent money on clothes, but there’s no unshod art dealer, and private planes were a great setting for closing deals.”

2024.04.13 18:07 theMezz What is in a name?

https://www.romesentinel.com/townnews/literature/kellys-korner-what-is-in-a-name/article_14064c1e-f8dd-11ee-a0b3-b3985bef8c53.html
The newsletter article, headlined “Utica Streets, Revised Edition,” is about how Utica streets got named. The book was written by Joan Klossner, a volunteer at the History Center since 2006, a very active volunteer. She has written other books and developed exhibits
The article states: “The second edition includes updates, new streets, and a fresh look.”
I read Joan’s first book and, of course, I’ll get her updated version. It is available at the History Center’s book shop.
I’ve collected the origins of Utica street names for many years. Here a few names that I know about:

Taylor Avenue — Lorenzo Taylor was the city’s engineer from 1838 until 1850 and made many of Utica’s early maps.

Hobart Street — Bishop John Hobart was an Episcopal clergyman. He did missionary work in Utica and Upstate, New York during the early 1800s.

Tilden Avenue — Samuel Tilden (1814-1886), a New York City lawyer, state assemblyman, was elected as the 25th governor of New York in 1874. He battled against public corruption, going against the likes of Boss Tweed. Tilden, a Democrat, narrowly lost the U.S. presidential election to Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876.

Hopper Street — James Hopper, a sea captain, came to Utica in 1801, bought land and became a merchant.

Seymour Avenue — Horatio Seymour was mayor of Utica, the 24th governor of the state and came within a whisker of defeating Ulysses S. Grant for president. Seymour is buried in Utica’s Forest Hill cemetery.

Varick Street — Abraham Varick, a lawyer, settled in Utica in 1804 and for many years was an agent for the Holland Land Company, buying land for the company and himself.

Devereux Street — Although many believe the street was named for John Devereux, Utica’s first elected mayor, the street was actually named in honor of his brother Nicholas (1791-1855), a merchant, a founder of the Savings Bank of Utica, an organizer of the Utica & Schenectady Railroad, director of the Utica Water Works, director and stockholder of Utica’s Steam Woolen Mills, and the man who helped start St. Bonaventure University, among other accomplishments.

Steuben Street — A Prussian military officer, Baron von Steuben (1730-1794) helped organize the American army during the Revolutionary War. He is regarded as one of the “fathers” of the U.S. Army. He is buried at the Steuben Memorial, near Remsen.

Higby Road — Joseph Higby, who arrived here around 1788, purchased 600 acres of land for which he paid $1 per acre.

Plant Street — Back when Utica was called Old Fort Schuyler, Benjamin Plant had a farm near today’s Oneida Square.

Butterfield Avenue — John Butterfield (1801-1869), a giant in the transportation industry, founded the Overland Mail stagecoach company, was the first president of the American Express Company, built a Utica hotel and was mayor of Utica in 1865.

I know more origins of Utica street names, but not nearly as many as Joan Klossner, which is why I have to go to the History Center to get her book.

2024.04.11 07:11 Davess_World2019 Hagwon Owner Collapsing his Empire / Ponzi Scheme to Ensue

Search on less popular subreddits,
Owner going mad

I am not surprised at all

Hagwonites........let's just say, are not the best and brightest bulbs in the box. Do they have degrees in education? No. Teaching licenses / certificates? No. Did they even graduate college? Ask management, owner, Korean staff, you'll be rather surprised. Do people even SPEAK English at an ENGLISH Hagwon? Again, it's surprising at the level of ignorance. I was asked before a Korean teacher's phonics class to pronounce Kindergarten words for her. "Dave, how do you say this (Log), is it log (as in "go") or Loog ( as in moon)." I had to tell her, American style is dAWg, -aw. She seemed really frustrated that the vowels never matched up with their spelling. Then why were you hired, and why are you teaching it?
Go read how the owner stupidly tripped all over the place and found himself in a pot of hot water he boiled himself.
  1. Changed brand, new curriculum. How much do you want to bet this moron PLANNED NOTHING in advance, went through with the change, and thought he and his staff would figure it out later? Hagwonites have the memory of goldfish, about 5 minutes. Generally they are like running through fog every day. Can't see anything more than a few yards in front of them.
  2. Steep learning curve for the staff. Again, he didn't plan to fail, just failed to plan. That should have been a GRADUAL transition by "chunking" it and absorbing it before the old system was trashed and the new system wasn't expected to be digested in one big swallow.
  3. Losing students. Well no kidding. They don't like the transition either. They also detect the stress from the staff, and kids feel stress too. Parents decide there are many other options, why pay to have their kids endure this along with the staff?
  4. Failed to up-sell new changes to parents. Be excited. Exaggerate the gains like everyone else does, explore the benefits of the transition. Did this dude take the temperature of his clientele or did he plow ahead and did whatever he wanted anyway? Any email, newsletter, open house to show new product, address concerns? Probably not.
  5. Abuses staff with overwork. Like a college student, cram Sunday night to do a 10 page research paper and don't sleep until after classes. This is very Hagwony, and I've witnessed this kind of neurotic mess several times. Don't do anything until it HAS to be done, then furiously overwork yourself into a frenzy until it's done. Dumb, very dumb.
  6. Irritates staff and students even more. When things are bad, don't make them WORSE. That's a pretty good rule of thumb for non-morons. This oaf decides it's a good idea to sit right inside the classroom and observe thereby making the students feel weird and awkward, not want to participate. How does Mr. Oaf interpret the result? I'll bet he thinks the teacher is doing a terrible job, doesn't have respect of the students, can't get anything done. Never once does the thought enter his mind, "You know, I think the students get shy when someone they don't know comes in and stares at them for 50 minutes and refuse to speak when called upon. Maybe I shouldn't be here."

Here comes the Ponzi scheme

You did something dumb? Losing students? Your bank account is dropping with no influx of new students on the horizon? Time to SHED SALARIES and run for your life!
Step 1: Find a target, harass them out the door with nitpicking and outrageous overwork until they quit and walk away. 💲 BONUS MONEY! 💲 Now owner can avoid severance, return airfare, confiscate salary and rental deposit, AND can sue for more damages because the employee broke the contract, not him! What a great way to save upwards of $5000! And mine for sympathy from the staff. Congratulations! Now you're not an abuser, you're a victim! It's a 180° swing in the boss's favor.
Step 2: Delay salaries with excuses. "Oh, we're a little short this month. Thank you for understanding our unique situation! We'll pay you in 2 weeks when parents pay the rest of the tuition." -- 🚩 If this doesn't set off a red flag for you, I don't know what will. Robbing Peter to pay Paul is a huge sign they don't have any reserves. All salary is paid directly from tuition deposits. That's what they call, "Living paycheck to paycheck." The money is exhausted by paying living costs. No money until the next paycheck.
Step 3: Stop paying employee benefits and use it to pay salaries so they keep working. -Better check your pension and health insurance status if a company is paying late.
Step 4: Ponzi scheme it. Pay SOME of the employees their full salary by using the money from other employees. Delay delay delay the disaffected employees as long as possible with false promises. Let this go on until the employees are owed 2-3 months of back pay. Owner needs to collect the remaining tuition payments until the semester finishes, then close up shop because the owner knows only 25% of the parents signed on for the next semester, can't pay bills with that money, it's over.
Step 5: Inform whatever employees that are left over and didn't jump off the Titanic that the place is closing and they'll get their final payments "In a month or two." Then, of course, not pay a single won to those employees that probably are a continent or two away.
Step 6: File for bankruptcy protection and run for your life. The foreigners are owed salaries, rent deposit back, plus unused vacation days and other benefits. Run out the clock on them, their visas have been cancelled, they have 2 weeks to change visas or leave the country. Hopefully most of them will be too poor or discouraged to seek legal help. Never give a Letter of Release because they can hang around in-country with another employer and keep up with their status, seek legal advice, file complaints.
If this happens to you, don't work until you are paid, and if it's this dire, get paid by the DAY since you never know when clowns like this will pack it in and take off.

2024.04.05 16:02 t2writes How do you respond to people that are condescending about writing?

I'm curious about others' experiences on this. My friend below is not the first person in my life to make me feel less than them because I write and don't work outside the home. I think it's just finally getting to me.
For reference, this is my "job.". I pay a lot of the household bills. My husband has a great job, so he is still the main breadwinner, but we still need one of us to be flexible because of the kids. For a parent that works at home and does all stay-at-home mom stuff, I still pay ALL household utilities, (gas, water, electric, sewer, trash) the car payment, and a few dinners out every month AFTER marketing costs. I feel like that's pretty darn good for someone that still has kids that need someone home for varying reasons I won't go into. Some months are better than others, and I can pay all bills in the house. But on average, we'll go wtih utilities, car payment, and some family dinners out.
I have a friend who is over 40 and old enough to know better, but she was hounding me to go out with her last Thursday night. Number one, ain't nobody got time for that bullshit after 40 anyway. Friday night? Sure. Thursday night? Fuck off. I think she's having a mid-life crisis and wants me along for the ride. I told her, "I have to work tomorrow." (I have a tight deadline. Granted, I set the deadline, but I still have quite a bit of work to do before I hand a book to my editor later this month.) I got an "okkkaaayy" as a response. I guess she thought I was full of crap because, in her eyes, I don't have a "real" job.
I set writing time every day and meet it, and it's usually in the early morning. I do not have time for a hangover or being up late before. I'm incredibly rigid with it during the week and don't write on weekends, so weekdays...if you need me, no you don't.
In the past she's snidely commented about my "hobby" or doesn't talk about it at all. She doesn't ask about it often, and when she does, she has a dick smile on her mouth when I talk about it, like she's listening to a five yo explain their day at kindergarten. She is a nurse anesthesiologist, so our lives look very different, and I get the impression she doesn't see what I do as contributing at all to my family's income.
However, for those of us that do it full time, you know it takes a lot of discipline to do what we do. I put in hours a day of writing, marketing, and extras like newsletters, formatting, editing, etc. over both pen names. I see year-over-year massive growth, so while I'm still not making baller money, it's contributing to the household. In addition, I've had several orange banners on Amazon. I'm not a household name, but I have some damn good days every once in a while.
Nothing. No recognition that I may actually be half-way decent at it.
She is not the first person in my life to pull this. I get a condescending "such a fun little thing for you to have something of your own" every now and then. She obviously doesn't know the work that goes into this.
I can't be the only one. If you are writing full time or close to it, how do you handle it when someone talks about your "cute stories?" OR does it not bother you? Am I being too sensitive on this?
I was supposed to hang out with her Saturday, but I canceled. I don't want to be around her. She's always been a little harsh and disrespectful about things, but this one hurt. (She's the kind that gives you advice you don't ask for and is...wrong anyway but acts like she knows everything.) I think it was kind of the last straw for me.
