A couple would travel city to city luring rich-looking people into their temporary hotels or apartments to rob and kill him. The man in this relationship was arrested and swiftly executed while the woman remained on the run only being found by chance 20 years later.
Fa Ziying was born on October 1, 1964, in Jiujiang in China's Jiangxi province. Ziying lived in a very small home with a father who pulled carts full of goods to markets and a mother who sold tea, also in markets. The family often had to venture outside in the winter to collect nearby cinders and scrap wood to have heat in the winter In 1979 his father drowned while out swimming due to the formation of a whirlpool. Later that same year his mother was hospitalized due to a car accident.
Ziying did not care much for school and studying and nobody put in much effort in raising or disciplining him while he was growing up thus falling into crime while at the age of 15. He earned himself a conviction for robbery and assault and was slapped with an 8-year prison sentence in 1981 although it was later reduced and he was released after 3 years.
After his release, he was arrested for yet another assault and sentenced to 10 years although yet again, was granted an early release in 1989 but he had already grown a reputation as a criminal and troublemaker. In 1990, Ziying married his wife and had a daughter. He managed to stay out of trouble until 1993 when he attended the wedding of one of his friends and met Lao Rongzhi.
Fa Ziying
Lao Rongzhi was born on December 25, 1974, also in Jiujiang as the youngest child of the family. Her father worked as a security guard for an oil company while her mother worked as an employee of that same company. She graduated in 1989 with excellent grades and decided to get a job as a kindergarten teaching assistant upon graduation, in 1992 she would be promoted as a full-time teacher. Eventually, she resigned as there were rumours that the school was about to close down and all the teachers would have to find other work. In 1993, she found herself at the same wedding Ziying was attending with the two meeting each other for the first time.
Lao Rongzhi
Ziying and Rongzhi struck up a conversation and got along well. Ziying actually bragged about his various crimes or as he put it "achievements" to her and presented himself more as a Robin Hood figure in his own words claiming to be "chivalrous" with his crimes motivated by his desire to fight against whom he perceived as evil and to support the weak and poor. After the wedding was over Ziying drove Rongzhi home and later Ziying began having an affair with Rongzhi as his mistress.
Ziying and Rongzhi
During their secretive dates, the two usually found themselves spending 10,000-20,000 yuan a month. Since Rongzhi's salary as a teacher was only 300 yuan a month that meant most of the couple's money could be owed to the fact that Ziying did not change his ways and was still a criminal. At some point in 1996, Ziying had gotten into a fight with another group of criminals over a business dispute in the middle of the street. A fight that resulted in Ziying non-fatally stabbing one of the participants. Ziying hastily gathered 6,000 yuan and told Rongzhi what happened and she agreed to flee Jiujiang with him which devastated her family as she was the favorite child and considered the one with the most promise but she insisted on leaving with him under the guise of doing "business" with Ziying.
It only took them one month to burn through their small amount of yuan and since Ziying had moved away he no longer had any of his old criminal contacts while Rongzhi had no job at all. Eventually, Rongzhi had to get a job as an escort while Ziying jumped on this opportunity and decided that with Rongzhi's new employment, they could lure rich men into the apartments they were staying in and rob them.
The two began this plan by starting fresh in Nanchang. Rongzhi would lure rich men into her hotel room where Ziying would wait before barging in posing as Rongzhi's husband. Each time Ziying would demand money to buy his silence about their scandals and adultery as well as a little extra in the form of apology money/compensation. Each time the victims would be more than willing to meet his price and the two often walked away with 70,000 to 80,000 yuan each time. After each robbery, Ziying in order to stop the two from being linked together would tell Rongzhi which train to board to which city they'll operate in next while Ziying would board a different train so the two would meet up and arrive at different times. They would pull this scam in Guangzhou, Changzhou, Nanning, Xiamen, Dongying and Huangmei before finding their way back to Nanchang in May of 1996 and renting a low-end and cheap apartment on June 2, 1996.
On July 28, Rongzhi went to a nightclub and performed the same scheme she had become accustomed to with her latest target being 35-year-old Xiong Qiyi, the general manager of an air-conditioning sales company as well as the manager of a local hotel. Qiyi was seduced by Rongzhi and led to their apartment and like always Ziying was waiting to pull his end of the scam. He extorted Qiyi out of an unspecified number of yuan and also stole his watches and jewelry. It's unknown why it escalated to this point but Ziying forced Qiyi to reveal his home address and once he did, he strangled him to death with a wire and rope. After Qiyi was dead, Ziying dismembered his body and placed the remains into 4 different bags.
Before he dismembered him, he had also stolen a house key from his person and both Ziying and Rongzhi made their way to the address Qiyi provided. Qiyi's 28-year-old wife, Zhang Li and 3-year-old daughter Xiong Lingxuan were both asleep in their respective bedrooms when the two arrived. They were both woken up and Ziying held Li at knifepoint. Ziying had brought some of the bags containing Qiyi's head and torso with him and showed the two the contents of the bags as a warning. He demanded more money. She had her hands and feet bound and proceeded to ransack the home stealing, jewelry, cash, bonds and other property. The total price of all they had stolen was 140,000 yuan. Once they had both finished looting the home, it was early in the morning on July 29th and Ziying strangled Li and Lingxuan to death using a belt. After killing Qiyi and his family the two both immediately fled to another city. They left the bags they brought at the home to fool the police into thinking Qiyi was murdered in his own home.
Qiyi's dismembered remains were discovered on July 31st after a foul smell was reported by the neighbours and the police began an investigation after finding the bodies of his wife and daughter. Qiyi was known to be at the nightclub so the police began their investigation by questioning the staff and patrons. The staff at the club told them that Qiyi had left with one of their employees a woman named "Chen Jia" who recently resigned and handed them her employee ID card.
The police tracked the ID card to a real woman named Chen Jia who had been living in Shenzhen and told the police that her ID card had been stolen recently. The apartment that Ziying and Rongzhi were staying at was the one that Rongzhi listed as her address when applying for a job at the nightclub and everyone who knew her as "Chen Jia" told police that she spoke with a Jiangxi accent despite supposedly being from another province. When the police entered the apartment they found several cans from Jiujiang. The police in Nanchang contacted those in Jiujiang and showed them photos of the woman who was supposedly Chen Jia and asked if anyone looking like her had lived there. They got back to them and confirmed that their Chen Jia was their Lao Rongzhi. Fa Ziying was also identified via local housing records and the purchase records for the apartment. On August 18, the Nanchang police published both Ziying and Rongzhi's photos and declared them wanted criminals to the public.
In October of 1997, they fled to Wenzhou in the Zhejiang province. Since the two did not have any stolen/forged ID cards and couldn't use their real ones due to being wanted they had to stay in guest houses that didn't require IDs and then adding on to this is that they both stayed in separate guest houses to avoid being linked together. While in Wenzhou, Rongzhi went by the name "Gege" and claimed to be from Sichuan. Somehow, she managed to get hired by another nightclub that didn't seem keen on asking her too many questions.
On October 10, 1997, Rongzhi and Ziying found their next target. A 22-year-old hostess named Liang Xiaochun. They thought that Xiaochun was rich solely based on a watch that she was wearing and nothing else. Rongzhi found out the apartment Xiaochun lived in so she and Ziying both paid her a visit claiming that they wanted to rent the apartment. After being let inside they both tied her hands and feet at knifepoint and forced her to give up any cash and valuables she owned. Upon realizing that Xiaochun wasn't rich at all and could only give them a mobile phone, her watch, passbook and a few bits of loose cash, they decided to use her phone to force Xiaochun to call any rich person she knew.
The only one she could think of was her boss, 29-year-old Liu Suqing. Xiaochun told Suqing that she had a stomach ache and may be unable to make it the next day and asked her to come check up on her to be sure. After Suqing entered, Ziying quickly bound her as they did with Xiaochun and forced her to hand over her bank cards and 1,000 yuan in cash. Ziying stayed behind to make sure the two never escaped while Rongzhi went to the bank to withdraw all the cash from Suqing's bank cards.
Once she withdrew all the money she called Ziying on a mobile phone to let him know. While at the bank a clerk who did know Suqing actually stopped Rongzhi to ask what was happening but she claimed to be a friend of hers and was withdrawing the money on her behalf which went unquestioned by the clerk enabling her to withdraw all 25,750 yuan. Once Ziying received the phone call he strangled both Xiaochun and Suqing to death with wires and stole an Omega watch, a Radar watch, a mobile phone, and a pager before meeting up with Rongzhi. The two returned to their guesthouse to gather their things, board a bus and flee Wenzhou.
While the two were fleeing, Xiaochun's boyfriend, a man simply referred to as "Mr. Li" had called Xiaochun's phone while it was still in the two's possession. None of the two would answer but Mr. Li was persistent and kept calling until finally Rongzhi picked up more than 2 hours later. Mr. Li was suspicious immediately because the woman who answered was not only not Xiaochun, but she was speaking in Mandarin and not the dialect/language he and Xiaochun spoke. Rongzhi didn't seem to know who Mr. Li was since her ploy to get him to stop calling was to say that Xiaochun was away with her boyfriend and would call him back once she returned. After Mr. Li informed them that Xiaochun's watch and more important the phone she was talking to him on was a gift from him she quickly hung up and would never answer again.
On October 12, after 2 days of no contact with Xiaochun, Mr. Li went to her apartment and accessed her room by climbing over the balcony and entering the unlocked balcony door. There he discovered Xiaochun and Suqing's bodies. The police arrived and found Xiaochun lying face down and Suqing face up, Xiaochun with her hands tied behind her back and Suqing with her hands tied in front of her. An autopsy concluded that the two had been strangled and no signs of rape or sexual assault were noted. The police dusted their bindings for prints and although nothing appeared in their own records, when the Wenzhou police expanded their search to outside the immediate area that is where they matched the prints to Ziying. But yet again, the two were nowhere to be found and just like with the police in Nanchang, they could do nothing more than just wait.
In September 1998, the two now fled to Jiangsu Province's Changzhou and rented a house. Little changed in their M.O. Rongzhi got a job at a Dance Hall and met Liu Hua, the owner of an auto repair shop. The two met at a Karaoke Bar but unlike most other times, Hua was actually reluctant to return home with Rongzhi. Eventually, though, he was finally convinced and drove Rongzhi back to her home where Ziying was waiting inside.
This time Ziying didn't do the usual extortion and suddenly and unexpectedly stabbed Hua non-fatally in the chest before tying his arms and legs to a chair. Ziying searched his person and found 5,000 yuan and a key to his sports car, both of which he stole. The next morning, Hua was still being held hostage in their home and now Ziying forced him to call his wife over and arrange a meeting for Rongzhi to pick up money. Ziying warned Hua that he would be killed if Rongzhi didn't return. She arrived at a bus stop with the 70,000 yuan that she had been told to bring with her and met with Rongzhi. She followed Rongzhi to the apartment where Hua was being held and arrived to see her husband bound to a chair and gagged.
She was made to hand over the money and after Ziying confirmed that she didn't call the police before showing up he likewise, restrained and gagged her. Just like in the last two incidents Ziying was prepared to kill the two but Hua begged so hard and pleadingly that it actually seemed to get to Ziying and he decided to spare them making sure to tell Hua "You're continued life was given to you by your wife" and the two left without killing them. When the two were eventually found, Hua had scars from how long he was tied up. The two told police that Ziying and Rongzhi communicated very little during the crime and both seemed to know what to do in advance likely on account of premeditation.
After this murder, they spent the next few months travelling across China going to Guangxi, Shantou, Hangzhou and others. On June 21, 1999, they ended up in Hefei in China's Anhui Province. In Hefei, Ziying and Rongzhi used the aliases Ye Weiqiang and Shen Lingqiu and stayed at different yet nearby hotels. On July 15, Rongzhi met 37-year-old Yin Jianhua at a nightclub with Jianhua being the general manager of an electricity company. Jianhua was considered generous and often spent a lot of money buying drinks and others for Rongzhi at the club so when on July 22, Rongzhi invited him to return home with her, he was happy to do so. As usual, Ziying was hiding inside and held Jianhua at knifepoint. Afterwards, he bound Jianhua's hands and feet with wire and stripped him naked before shoving him into an iron cage he had bought in advance.
Jianhua was defiant and refused to give Ziying any money likewise also not believing that Ziying had done this before and that he was lying about being a serial kidnapper and killer in an attempt to intimidate him. So Ziying decided to intimidate him. He called 33-year-old Lu Zhongming a carpenter into his apartment under the pretext of fixing a window. Once Zhongming arrived he was again held at knifepoint and tied up. Only this time Ziying made no demands and repeatedly stabbed Zhongming 20 times in the back until he finally died. After killing him, Ziying proceeded to behead Zhongming with an axe and showed the head to Jianhua as a warning. Zhongming's body was then placed into a freezer that had also been bought in advance and said freezer was moved to another room.
Lu Zhongming
After witnessing this brutal and senseless killing, Jianhua was terrified and now more cooperative. Jianhua on July 23, was made to write several notes addressed to his wife asking for the money with Rongzhi adding her own writing to the end with the phrase "I will be dead for one penny less. His accomplices will definitely make me die faster than that person just now." Ziying then went to the home of Jianhua's wife to deliver the note. She told him that she didn't have any cash at home but could borrow some from her family. She asked him to wait while he went to collect it and would return as soon as possible. What actually happened was that even before reading the extra portion added by Rongzhi, she could tell something was suspicious and went to tell the police once out of Ziying's site. At the time the report was made, an episode of a show called "Police Window" was being aired so what happened next would be broadcast live for thousands of people.
The police were quick to arrive at the scene with an estimated 9-10 officers crowding the apartment corridor while others stayed outside directly below the apartment window to stop Ziying from jumping. Snipers were also deployed in the buildings across from the apartment. The police cut the phone lines to the apartment and began negotiations. The police urged Ziying to surrender but he refused and demanded they leave before boldly asserting that he would "beat them to death" The only reason the police didn't storm the apartment right then and there was because, although it's unknown where he obtained it, Ziying had in his possession a gun. Ziying had also hidden behind a bunch of heavy objects and furniture that he moved to give himself cover. As the standoff progressed, Ziying demanded food and told the police that he didn't want to talk with them. Once the food arrived in order to prevent being surprised he ordered the food be thrown into the apartment and not walked up to him.
Ziying during the siege
Every word exchanged between the police and Ziying was also captured live for everyone to hear including this one which became infamous and one of the most remembered parts of the broadcast. While urging him to surrender Ziying said "This world is so unfair, your lives are the same as mine" The officer interpreted this in a way Ziying did not and said "Yes, all are precious" to which Ziying said "Precious as shit, with that little salary you earn" after this exchange, they again urged him to put down his gun only for Ziying to demand they stop asking him that even adding "Would you put down yours?" The continued broadcasting of this standoff soon became dangerous for all involved once Ziying noticed the show's cameraman. He said "Hey, that friend, holding a camera. You don't look like a tough guy. Do you find recording this funny? You may lose your life in a second" After three hours with no progress the police fired a tear gas canister into the apartment.
The police firing the tear gas
Two minutes after the tear gas filled the room Ziying briefly fled only to open fire on the police who returned fire prompting Ziying to flee back into the tear gas-filled room. Eventually, Ziying ran over to an open window and stuck his head out to get fresh air but the police were still hesitant to storm the apartment. Ziying once again fired upon them leading to a 10-minute shootout. Eventually one of the bullets hit Ziying in his right thigh causing him to drop his weapon from the pain and what finally prompted officers to storm the apartment and arrest Ziying. Due to the wound, Ziying couldn't walk so the police had to carry him outside and bring him to the hospital. The entire raw footage of the standoff survives and can be easily viewed to this day.

Ziying's arrest
During this standoff, Rongzhi was still at the apartment with Jianhua and Zhongming's body. She was not watching the TV nor did she notice any heavy police presence but she still knew something had happened since Ziying hadn't returned. After waiting a little long she eventually strangled Jianhua to death and left a note for Ziying in case he returned. This note read as follows. "Honey, I left. I'll wait for you at home. I love you". When he was questioned Ziying made sure his answers were as annoyingly difficult for the police as possible, even going so far as to deny the fact that Rongzhi had even gone to Hefei with him in order to buy her time to flee. Just like with his arrest, Ziying's interview at the hospital was also recorded for the same TV Program. The police then asked him where the apartment the two stayed at was located to which he said "I really don't know" When asked if they had rented the apartment he also said "I don't know"
Ziying also denied that he even was Ziying telling the police that his name was Ye Weiming and that he was from Tangshan in the Hebei province. After his parents were killed in the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, he was adopted by an old man and raised in Zhejiang and would sometimes go to Tibet with him for poaching. He explained his presence in Hefei as the result of being kidnapped alongside two others who he couldn't name. The police found that a man named Ye Weiming checked into a hotel in Hefei but when they passed this information over to the police in Zhejiang they were told that no such person existed.
Eventually, Ziying gave police the address of the other apartment the two stayed at, the one where no crime was committed leading to the police setting up guard in that area. They also put up several police checkpoints across the city and had officers deployed at the airports and train stations. On July 24, Ziying lied to the police and told them that his accomplices wanted to meet with him at the entrance of a local hotel. Several police officers some in plain-clothed were waiting at that hotel to arrest them but as expected nobody showed up since Ziying was lying just for the sake of wasting the police's time.
Because of Ziying's unhelpful answers, the police were unable to find the apartment until neighbours called them to report a foul smell coming from the apartment on July 27 leading to a body being discovered by the landlord. The police upon entering discovered Jianhua's body in the cage having already begun to decompose from the heat as well as Zhongming's body in the freezer, but most dammingly, they also found the note. As Zhongming didn't carry any ID with him that day, his body was actually unidentified, They could only infer he was a carpenter based on the tools scattered around. The police had to put a notice in the newspaper asking the public to come forward. By August 12, his body remained unidentified and it wasn't until many more days later when his wife finally came forward on September 3. Although she did notice Zhongming was missing she never came forward simply because it never occurred to her that he could be the one dead in that freezer. Even before seeing his face she identified him based on a toolbox found in the apartment that she knew belonged to him. The police arriving and investigating the apartment was yet another thing broadcasted for the show.
Detectives at the apartment
After the body and note were found Ziying was questioned yet again and confessed to his true identity and the murders. Ziying made no attempt to defend himself, expressed no remorse and didn't even care about his wife and daughter. But he was worried about Rongzhi and would constantly ask if she had been arrested and refused to aid in capturing her. Not that he'd know where she was, to begin with. After confessing to the murders, the detectives from Nanchang and Wenzhou arrived to question him, he retracted his confession for the Wenzhou murders specifically.
On November 18, Ziying was put on trial at the Hefei Intermediate People's Court. Ziying was tried for 7 counts of murder and mutable counts of kidnapping. At court, he retracted his confession to exonerate Rongzhi and claimed to have acted alone. He also made contradictory defences telling the court in one instance that he was a contract killer who committed the crimes on the behalf of a mystery benefactor from Taiwan only to hype himself up as a Robin Hood-esque figure who was stealing from the rich to give to the poor. The prosecutor when it came to sentencing the prosecutor pointed out his arrogance and how this supposedly generous man who stole to aid the less fortunate had no remorse for beheading an innocent carpenter and strangling a 3-year-old child.
Ziying being brought to court
Ziying was convicted and sentenced to death and fined 20,000 yuan. The fine would, however, be waived since Ziying had no means to actually pay it. Since Ziying didn't appeal and announced that he had no intentions to appeal this sentence would be carried out swiftly. On December 28, 1999, Ziying would be brought to the execution grounds and publically executed via a single gunshot to the back of his head.
Ziying being led to his execution
The last picture of Ziying. He was shot mere moments after this photo was taken.
Although half of the serial killer couple was now dead, the other half, Rongzhi, was still nowhere to be found and despite being one of China's most wanted fugitives the police wouldn't even get so much as a single reported sighting. So what was she doing in the aftermath of her escape? She fled Hefei for Wuhan and later Henan Province and later a safe house in Chongqing. This was the "home" referred to in her note. She stayed there waiting for Ziying. She didn't learn about Ziying's fate until January of 2000 when she watched a news report on his execution. Seeing that Ziying was now dead and would never be coming back she left the safehouse and fled to Xiamen.
During her time on the run, she lived in various hostels, hotels and guesthouses. Eventually, Rongzhi let her guard down and began living a normal life. Starting in 2016, she got a job as a bar waitress using the alias "Shirley" and soon met a new boyfriend although this relationship ended very quickly. She made good money in the bar before leaving in 2017 to work as a car saleswoman. While working, she met another man and soon they became a couple. Rongzhi would also continue with her old tricks and was known to flirt with some customers to convince them to buy a car from her. Rongzhi also picked up many new hobbies such as painting and dancing with no one the wiser as to her true identity.

Rongzhi at a Christmas party
On November 27, 2019, Rongzhi was at a mall working part-time as a shop assistant. As 20 years had passed and she had more than let her guard down, Rongzhi wasn't worried about her face being seen by the cameras. Not that long ago there was a celebration of the 70th anniversary of China in its modern form and in order to look good for the event, the police across the country launched "Operation Cloud Sword" with part of this operation involving the use of advancements in technology to catch wanted criminals. As a result of this, many became familiar with Rongzhi's face yet again and so the Xiamen police noted that this shop assistant looked eerily similar to how Rongzhi would look 20 years later.

Rongzhi in the CCTV footage
A facial comparison analysis was conducted which returned a 97.33% likelihood that the shop assistant was Rongzhi. The police arrived at the mall on November 28th and arrested Rongzhi while she was working. Rongzhi denied accusations that she was in fact her and claimed to be Hong Yejiao from Nanjing. DNA tests confirmed that Yejiao was actually Rongzhi. Despite the DNA tests she continued to deny it claiming now to be an orphan who didn't know her true origin. This lie was not sustainable and she admitted she was Rongzhi on November 29. One may expect this revelation to cause all those in her personal life to turn on her but Rongzhi's boyfriend pledged to spend all of his money on her defence and never leave her. After a brief investigation to make sure she didn't commit any crimes in Xiamen, the police quickly extradited her to Nanchang on December 5.
Rongzhi's mugshot
Once interrogated back in Nanchang she admitted that Ziying was her accomplice but denied accusations of being a murderer and that Ziying did all the killing himself. Rongzhi was still charged with murder as an accomplice and for directly murdering Jianhua. Her two lawyers before the trial even began criticized the actions of the police and prison officials as illegal since they were repeatedly denied access to Rongzhi to speak with their client and local media was reluctant to report on this. Eventually, they would gain access to her. On December 21, 2020, Rongzhi's trial began at the Nanchang Intermediate People’s Court.
In court, Rongzhi retracted her confession and told the court that she was an unwilling accomplice forced into a life of crime by Ziying. She even denied being in a relationship with Ziying contradicting a previous statement made by her to a lawyer in private about how she developed a form of "Hero worship" She claimed that Ziying had gotten her pregnant and would force her to take medication to terminate the pregnancy only to, 4 months later rape her again and cause another pregnancy which Ziying's family accompanied her to a doctor to get the fetus aborted again. That Ziying "tortured" and beat her requiring stitches in some parts and forced Rongzhi to resign from her job. Rongzhi's family was also threatened by Ziying in order to keep Rongzhi in line. All of this is what Rongzhi had to say about him.
Rongzhi denied being present for the murder of Qiyi and his family claiming to have left before Ziying killed her. This was debunked as phone records put her at the scene at Qiyi's time of death. She also in order to support the image she was making for Ziying claimed that he raped the victims even though an autopsy showed no signs of sexual assault. The prosecutor also provided her interview transcripts with the police in which she told them that she proposed setting fire to the apartment to hide the evidence of the murders. She explained herself to the court by saying she made that up and that it was inspired by a high-profile arson case in China only a few years prior and that she only said that to stop the police from asking her for details. She also claimed that Ziying regretted this murder but hated regretting it and blamed Rongzhi for his "lack of masculinity" Ultimately the prosecutor told the court that it didn't matter if Rongzhi directly killed Qiyi and his family since she still enabled it to happen.
For Xiaochun and Suqing, she couldn't keep her story straight. She first claimed to only follow them to the apartment and tie them up but that Ziying did everything else, then she claimed that she tried to convince Ziying not to kill the two before later claiming that she had left the apartment before the murders and lastly claiming that she simply claiming that she told Ziying about Xiaochun and had no other involvement at all, a claim easily disproven by Rongzhi's presence at the bank. And on the topic of her presence at the bank. The allegedly, tortured and coerced Rongzhi was described as perfectly calm.
With the kidnapping of Liu and his wife, she claimed to not want to commit any crimes in this new city and was beaten by Ziying for saying that. Later when she did confess to being an active participant in the kidnapping she stated that she did not use any forms of violence or force and that again Ziying did everything on his own. As Liu and his wife actually survived the kidnapping their initial interview records had them explaining what really happened and was what the prosecution presented to the court.
She claimed that she did not kill Jianhua but according to an autopsy, his time of death was July 24th the day after Ziying's televised arrest meaning that it was impossible for Ziying to be responsible. Furthermore, When Ziying confessed to his murder back in 1999, he did so in a very indirect way. When he was asked when he killed Jianhua he said "Whatever time the prosecutor says I did" When asked what he used to kill him he said "A knife, a rope, anything really"
The prosecutor pointed out how if Rongzhi really was for all intents and purposes Ziying's hostage, she had the chance to go to the police every time Rongzhi was sent to the bank to withdraw the money. She defended herself by saying that her family would be killed if she did that. She also claimed to have left the note behind so Ziying wouldn't kill her family if he came back. To prove more premeditation and that Rongzhi was more responsible than she let on, purchase records and receipts were produced showing that she had purchased the freezer storing Zhongming's body.
Rongzhi claimed that she hated gaining money through these illegal means and said "my scream was louder than the victim's" and doubled down by claiming to be a victim herself. The prosecution attempted to refute the claims that Ziying was horrendously abusive towards her making sure to point out how he went out of his way to protect Rongzhi and buy her enough time as possible to escape and even denied that she was ever involved at his own trial. By all accounts, it seemed like they were a couple and willing accomplices with Ziying seemingly loving Rongzhi more than his own wife.
On September 9, 2021, the court believed they had heard enough evidence to find Rongzhi guilty and they handed down the death sentence. Rongzhi appealed her sentence and yet again it was slow to obtain legal representation especially since Rongzhi was now selective with who she wanted to hire. On August 18, 2022, The Jiangxi Provincial Higher People’s Court heard her appeal. They were unswayed by her arguments and on November 30, they upheld the sentence. Rongzhi and her family were dissatisfied with the verdict and intended to appeal further but nothing seemed to come from this.

On December 18, 2023, after the Supreme People's Court approved the sentence, Lao Rongzhi was executed via lethal injection

2024.03.02 23:50 Waste_Surround5495 I just had the weirdest phone call, it must be a scam right?

Chinese dude FaceTime called me claiming to be from the FCC but using a random iCloud number. He asked if I speak Chinese which I do, the conversation proceeded in Chinese.
He said that someone used my identity to start phone service and the same information could be used to create fraudulent investment accounts and lead to serious legal problems. He told me the number, the date it was started, and the AT&T service desk it was opened at in the Xiamen airport.
By this time I was feeling scam already.
He continued to say that I need to talk to the police and report it to them so they can do an investigation and close all possible associated accounts. He made sure I had the information correct and transferred me to the police.
I figured if they were going to do anything they needed me to give them my actual information which of course is what they wanted.
As soon as the police answered immediately and didn’t introduce themselves as the police, which would be a serious crime, I hung up.
The only thing I am really wondering about is how did they know I speak Chinese. Maybe just a numbers game?
Has anyone else had an experience like this?

2024.02.24 20:53 NeedToPostOrComment Help with traveling domestic in China

Hey all!
I've made a previous post about a possible itinerary that I have cut down on thanks to helpful suggestions here.
I've cut down the destinations to 4 places
  1. Beijing
  2. Zhangjiajie
  3. Guilin
  4. Yunnan
I still might need to cut down to 3 places because Yunnan has more places to explore between Kunming, Lijiang, Dali, and Shangri-La. I might need to cut out Guilin although I am reluctant to (unless I cut out Beijing which is always easy to access in the future but we are flying in and out of Beijing and already booked)
The main issue I'm facing right now is booking domestic flight tickets. All the flights are expensive like (1000RMB+ in June). I've heard or seen much lower estimates in the (500 CNY) range and want to know if I'm doing something wrong. I'm going through https://www.ctrip.com/ to search flights and then trying to book directly on the airlines webpage. But coming across multiple issues:

I have looked extensively for different flights using different dates and order of destinations and couldn't find one that works so I am asking for some advice:

2024.02.13 22:26 Accomplished-Soil149 List of Hilton Impresario Free Night Deals

A list of current free night deals through Hilton Impresario. Impresario reservations can include VIP guest status, daily breakfast for 2, up to a $100 USD property credit per stay, upgrade at check-in if available, priority for early check-in/late checkout if available, and double Hilton honors points (benefits can vary by property).
For those unfamiliar with Hilton Impresario, it is a membership program that allows travel agencies to add perks to their travelers’ stays at participating Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, and LXR Hotels and Resorts. Bookings are made directly through Hilton, so you will be eligible for typical point earnings and status benefits. Rates are typically equivalent to the flexible rate price, so Honors Discount rates can be cheaper. However, with the free night promotions, I have found the Impresario rates to be significantly less expensive than the member rates.
Hilton Impresario rates must be booked through a travel agent. These promotions were pulled manually by checking the rate calendars for each property, so I may have missed a couple. If a property or date of interest is not listed here, feel free to reach out, and I can check to see if there is a promotion available.
Please let me know if you have any questions, or if you want me to pull a rate for you!
Here is a link to a Google sheet where I will be updating any changes, as well as adding promotions from other hotel suppliers as well Luxury Hotel Promotions.

2024.02.01 15:15 prima2023 My experience applying for China Visa in London (UK) as a permanent resident from Canada

Hello everyone, just posting a bit of information in case anyone is looking for it in the future. I'm a white, 20-something male Canadian citizen with a 2-year residence permit in the UK. However, I haven't been in the UK nor worked for a UK company in the past 10 months. I decided to apply in London as flights to London are cheap and you don't need an appointment to apply for a visa.
My experience was as follows. I went to the visa office at 8:20 am and was let into the office at 8:50, before the office was supposed to open at 9:00 am. Everything was processed, including biometrics, payments and everything by 9:40 am. I was told that I received a 2-year, 60-day multiple entry visa and to come back in four days to pick up my passport with the visa stamped in.
My itinerary was for 85 days, flying into Beijing and flying from Xiamen. When the employee told me that my visa is only 60-days multiple entries, I offered to book an exit flight from Nanning on the 60th day. The employee who processed my application nodded her head and told me it was fine. I did not have to book a different exit flight.
I was worried that I would be automatically denied a visa because I haven't been in the UK or worked for a UK company in the past 10 months. The topic of employment didn't come up.
The employee spent the majority of the time writing down my hotel itinerary dates. The only questions that were asked were about the specific dates in and out of China. I forgot the date of my exit flight, but the employee allowed me to look at my phone to find the date. As well, I told her that I was exiting into the Malaysia, when the itinerary she was reading clearly showed that I was exiting into Singapore with a connection prior in Kuala Lumpur. I told her that I forgot because I was tired and she seemed seemed satisfied with my answers.
She seemed surprised that I had Langfang and Tianjin in my itinerary (I can't remember which one but she said one of these two places under her breath), but she didn't ask me any questions.
The whole process of applying for a visa to enter China was considerably easier than applying for the UK Youth Mobility Visa scheme. The China visa office was professional and efficient. One thing to note is that I spent a lot of time double-checking my visa application, so everything that I submitted met the standards listed the China visa application website specific for the UK. I stapled four sections separately and handed them to the employee in this order: COVA form, passport and UK visa document scans, hotel bookings in order (I also added an overview of each hotel including addresses and dates for easy reference), and flight bookings.

2024.01.16 10:19 orientaleaf The Qinling Mountain Tea Series - Part 3: Tea Cultivation History in China

The Qinling Mountain Tea Series - Part 3: Tea Cultivation History in China
Tea plants existed approximately 70 to 80 million years ago, but the discovery and utilization of tea occurred only around four to five thousand years ago. Historical records of tea date back over two thousand years, with evidence suggesting the presence of the word "槚" in the earliest Chinese dictionary, "Er Ya尔雅," around 200 BCE. This term was used to refer to the bitter tea plant ("荼," an ancient character for "tea"). By around 350 CE, during the Eastern Jin Dynasty东晋, tea was extensively discussed by Chang Qiu 常璩in the "Huayang Guo Zhi华阳国志," mentioning its contribution as a tribute during King Wu of Zhou's expedition against King Zhou of Shang around 1066 BCE. This indicates that tea from the region of Ba Shu (巴蜀, modern-day Sichuan四川) was offered as a tribute over 3,000 years ago. Therefore, it can be inferred that the cultivation and production of tea existed in China at least 3,000 years ago.

The Origin of Tea Trees in Southwestern China

Large ancient tea trees were discovered abundantly in China, particularly in Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Sichuan, and Hubei. Historical documents, such as "Wu Pu Ben Cao吴普·本草" from the Three Kingdoms三国 period, mention large tea trees. Recent surveys have found sizeable wild tea trees in nearly two hundred locations across ten provinces in China, some covering thousands of acres. Notably, in 1961, a 32.12-meter tall wild tea tree was discovered in the dense forest of Bada Daheshan in Menghai County, Yunnan, estimated to be 1,700 years old. Scientifically, the consensus is that the original habitat of tea trees is in the southwest of China, with Yunnan's Xishuangbanna西双版纳 region considered a probable center of origin.

Exploring the Legend of Shennong神农 Tasting Hundred Herbs尝百草: The Discovery and Utilization of Tea

In the Warring States period, the book 'Shennong Bencao神农百草' recorded the legend of 'Shennong tasting a hundred herbs, encountering seventy-two poisons, and finding relief in tea神农尝百草,日遇七十二毒,得荼而解之.' Folklore tells of a figure named Shennong, who, some 5000 years ago, was an early innovator in agriculture and medicine. Seeking remedies for ailments, Shennong tirelessly explored a multitude of herbs. One day, he encountered seventy-two poisonous plants, and the accumulated toxins left him numbness, burning sensations, and loss of self-control. Seeking respite, he rested under a tree as a cool breeze brought a fragrant and sweet leaf into Shennong's mouth. Revitalized, he chewed on the tender leaves of the tree beneath which he rested, and the toxins dissipated, leaving him comfortable and at ease. He recognized these leaves as a potent remedy and named them 'cha茶' (tea). Another widely circulated legend suggests that Shennong possessed a transparent stomach, enabling him to observe the effects of ingested foods and medicines. One day, he consumed a white-flowered leaf, experiencing a transformation where bitterness turned to sweetness. The toxic substances in his stomach were thoroughly purged by the juice of this leaf, seemingly undergoing a thorough 'inspection.' Consequently, he named this tree 'cha茶.' When afflicted by poisoning in his herbal explorations, Shennong would consume the tea leaves he carried, promptly neutralizing the toxicity. Shennong introduced this tea remedy to the people, rescuing them repeatedly from plague and calamity. The legend of Shennong tasting a hundred herbs is perhaps our ancestors' earliest account of tea consumption.
Tea sage茶圣 Lu Yu陆羽 in the Tang唐 dynasty likely referenced this historical narrative in his work, 'The Classic of Tea茶经,' stating, 'The consumption of tea began with Shennong茶之为饮,发乎神农氏.' Lu Yu also believed that tea drinking was known during the time of Duke Zhou in Lu during the Spring and Autumn periods. Notable figures such as Yan Ying of Qi in the Spring and Autumn era, Yang Xiong and Sima Xiangru of the Han Dynasty, Wei Yao of Wu in the Three Kingdoms period, Liu Kun, Zhang Zai, Lu Na, Xie An, and Zuo Si of the Jin dynasty, all shared a fondness for tea. The practice increased, becoming a cultural norm. Lu Yu noted that tea consumption had become widespread by the Tang dynasty, with households in both the east and west—Xi'an, Luoyang, and regions in Hubei and Sichuan—all-embracing tea. From the legend of Shennong tasting a hundred herbs to establishing tea-drinking customs, this marks the historical progression from medicinal use to beverage enjoyment.

Valuable Historical Artifacts and Relics of Tea

The historical artifacts and relics unearthed from the over 2,100-year-old Western Han tomb in Mawangdui, Changsha, are abundant. Among them are bamboo slips with writings, silk books, and silk paintings. One of the notable findings is a silk painting depicting a woman offering tea, providing a realistic portrayal of tea consumption by the Han Dynasty emperors and nobility. The burial inventory includes a document mentioning a "wooden ancient moon chest," and based on research, "wooden big moon" is considered an alternative character for Jia, meaning bitter tea (茶). This marks the earliest discovery of tea-related items buried with the deceased.
In the underground palace of Famen Temple Pagoda in Fufeng County, Shaanxi, numerous Tang Dynasty relics have been preserved for over 1,100 years. These rare treasures include gold and silver tea utensils, glass bowls, and secret-colored porcelain tea sets. The collection of gold and silver tea items consists of a silver cage for roasting tea, a tortoise-shaped box for storing tea, a tea mill for grinding tea leaves, a tea strainer, a salt table, a silver altar, a silver teaspoon, a tea whisk, a silver stove for boiling tea, and a silver fire container for holding charcoal. This assortment represents China's most complete set of Tang Dynasty imperial tea utensils.
Mount Meng in Mingshan County, Sichuan, has a rich history as an ancient tea-producing region, yielding various famous teas since the Tang Dynasty. Many historical relics have been preserved in the area, including the "Imperial Tea Garden." According to tradition, the Imperial Tea Garden, located on the mountainside of Shangqing Side Shan'ao, was where Wu Lizhen, a resident during the Ganlu period of the Western Han Dynasty (53–50 BC), planted seven tea plants. Covering an area of 12 square meters, the Imperial Tea Garden is surrounded by stone railings, with a locked gate, two stone steles on the left recounting the origin of the fairy tea and the achievements of Master Ganlu (the steles are now destroyed). The stone fence is well-preserved, and a new couplet is engraved on the stone gate: "In the Yangtze River's water and on the top of Mount Meng, tea is abundant."
Additionally, halfway up Mount Meng, there is the "Zhiju Temple," founded by the Daoist Wu Lizhen during the Han Dynasty. It was rebuilt during the Song Dynasty and restored during the Ming Wanli era. From the Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, tribute tea was produced here annually, making it one of China's early tribute tea institutions.
The author of the first tea book of the Tang Dynasty, "The Classic of Tea," was Lu Yu, born in Jingling, Hubei. Today, Wudang Mountain in Tianmen County still preserves historically significant sites related to Lu Yu, such as Literary Spring, Lu Zi Well, Lu Zi Spring, Lu Yu Pavilion, and Lu Gong Ci. In his later years, Lu Yu lived in the Miao Xi Temple on Zhu Shan in Huzhou, Zhejiang. The Zhu Shan site still exists today. Lu Yu investigated the tea-producing regions of Changxing in Zhejiang and Yixing in Jiangsu during the Tang Dynasty. Some remnants of tribute tea institutions, such as Jinsha Spring and Guzhu Mountain, can still be found.
The Buddhist sacred sites of Mount Tiantai and Jingshan Temple in Zhejiang during the Tang and Song Dynasties were places where tea cultivation, processing, and the Buddhist tea ceremony were nurtured. During the Tang Dynasty, the Japanese monk Saicho studied Buddhism and the tea ceremony at Mount Tiantai and took tea seeds back to Japan, contributing to the spread of tea in Japan. The inscription on a stone tablet at Mount Tiantai records this historical contribution. Jingshan Temple has maintained the stele inscribed by Emperor Xiaozong of the Southern Song Dynasty, stating, "Jingshan Xingsheng Wanshou Chan Temple."
Furthermore, during the Song Dynasty, the "Imperial Tea Garden" in Beiyuan, Jian'an (now Jianou), Fujian, and the "Imperial Tea Garden" in Wuyishan, Chongan County, both known for producing tribute tea during the Qing Dynasty, as well as the "Eighteen Imperial Teas" in front of the Hugong Temple at the foot of Shifeng Mountain in Longjing Village, Hangzhou, visited by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, have all survived the ages and are available for contemporary tea enthusiasts to study and appreciate.

The Evolution and Formation of the Character 'Tea茶'

In ancient historical records, tea was referred to by various names such as 'Tu,' 'Chuang,' 'Cha,' 'She,' 'Xuan,' 'Ming,' 'Jia,' 'Gua Lu,' 荼、荈、诧、蔎、选、茗、槚、瓜芦and more. The earliest Chinese dictionary, 'Er Ya尔雅,' dating back to the Qin and Han dynasties around the 2nd century BCE, mentions, 'Jia, bitter tu (tea).' During the Eastern Jin dynasty, Guo Pu explained in his commentary on 'Er Ya' that tea picked early is called 'Tu,' when picked later, it is called 'Ming.' The character '茶' (tea) first appeared in Emperor Xuanzong's 'Kaiyuan Wenzizi Yin Yi' during the Tang dynasty. In the mid-Tang dynasty, Lu Yu, in his 'Classic of Tea' (Chajing), mentioned the names of tea as 'Cha,' 'Jia,' 'She,' and 'Ming,' officially choosing to use '茶' (tea) and eliminating one stroke from the character '荼' (tu). As for the pronunciation of '荼,' there are two systems: in regions like Sichuan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, and North China, it is pronounced as 'chai' or 'cha,' while in Fujian, Fuzhou, Xiamen, and Shantou, it is pronounced as 'ta' and 'te.' These pronunciation systems were carried overseas, resulting in two pronunciation systems internationally.
In European and American countries, it is written as 'tea' or 'the,' while in Russia, Japan, and other Asian countries, it is mainly spelled according to the pronunciation of the Chinese character '茶,' such as in Russian and Japanese. The word 'tea' pronunciation reflects its origin in China and its global dissemination.

2024.01.16 03:35 GoatDefiant1844 Observation about Bangalore Traffic Jams

This is a comment I posted on reddit. Putting the same here also.
I have been to all indian metropolitan cities. Bangalore is the best city. But the worst traffic jams. Horrible Mumbai traffic looks like a small roadblock compared to the ones in bangalore.
So my views on how to solve is -
I am in Delhi. I have traveled to Bangalore multiple times. I will explain what I observed.
  1. DELHI METRO - is WORLD CLASS in terms of quality and connectivity. It beats New York and London. Only below shanghai. It's safe reliable.
And best part is whole of Delhi, Noida (Uttar Pradesh) and Gurgaon (Haryana) is covered. It's affordable. Pretty much the whole NCR can be travelled in a metro. It has a system length of 400 KMS + AND EVER EXPANDING.
I will give you an example. I live in RK Puram (Delhi) my friend works in an IT Company in Uttar Pradesh (Noida) I take a metro. Without exiting the system. I land in front of his IT PARK in another state. THAT'S EFFICIENCY. UBER is useless in Delhi because of efficiency of metro system.
Good metro and bus/end mile transport can out UBER out of business.
Just imagine how INDIGO Airlines beat Indian railways?
Earlier Upper Middle Class people used to use Trains for journeys upto 1000 kms. Now they use airplanes.
First AC and Second AC are empty on railways on long distance routes. Because indian railway runs at 40 km per hour speed (even a moped can run faster) they are super slow. 100 trains on same tracks.
But once india implements bullet trains - we can beat indigo.
Like this Bangalore can beat UBER and even RAPIDO at its business. If we properly implement a mass rapid transit system with LONG Term Vision.
We should think about next 100 years.
Bangalore Metro is really bad. It goes to nowhere. Even after the full system is developed Bangalore metro would be far more inefficient than Delhi.
When you look at Delhi metro - it reduces 60 lakh cars per day on road. You can see a metro built with a long term vision.
Bangalore metro you can't see that vision.
I can go to Delhi AIRPORTS with rs. 50 in 30 mins. Same distance in Bangalore is rs. 1000 in 190 mins.
Also in the future Delhi's second MEGA airport NOIDA JEWAR international airport will also be linked by metro.
Even more efficiency.
  1. Public Busses - Bangalore needs atleast another 5000 buses for last mile connectivity.
  2. AFFLUENCE - BANGALORE IS RICH. Yes this is problematic. Even thou it's a good thing there is a problem of having too many upper middle clasw ane rich people.
Delhi has a lot of poor people, lower middle class people (working in unorganised)
Bangalore has a too much of upper middle class people. And all of them have cars. Bangalore employment is generated by IT Sector. And IT Sector in general pays 300% above unorganised manufacturing etc which delhi has.
Because of very high pay in IT SECTOR (compared to other Industries) other industres (low paying) cannot survive in bangalore. That's what happened in Bay Area in California.
Super poor poor and lowering middle class people are comparatively A LOT less in BANGALORE. THANKS TO IT SECTOR, advanced manufacturing, high tech Industries etc. Also neighboring states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu are also rich.
In south india there are three metropolitan cities - Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. While in North India there is only Delhi as a metropolitan city.
Bangalore has a lot of affluent well to do people (6 lakhs per year +) Delhi doesn't have that.
And Bangalore crowd is aspirational and young which means they are gonna buy a credir card. Even if on credit card.
E.G OF AFFLUENCE BEING A PROBLEM - Singapore. Singapore only has 250 km road. But it has 30 lakh rich people. Because of which Singapore almost banned owning a car. In Singapore if you want to buy a 10 lakh rupee car. You have to buy a 50 lakh permit.
Problem is Singapore has too many upper middle class class people and it's a small island. Imagine Singapore having 30 lakh cars? It only has 250 kms of road in the whole country.
London is still struggling even thou they implemented ERP (Electronic Road Ricing)
WHAT'S THE SOLUTION
  1. Metro - expand it thinking for the next 100 years. Run it till the airport.
Delhi meteo even goes to neighboring states like Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. BLR metro should definitely be expanded to neighboring districts atleast.
  1. Extreme parking fees.
Massively fine (5000 rs per instance) for cars which are parked illegally.
  1. ERP OR ELECTRONIC ROAD PRICING. If you are riding on any congested road. It's going to be super costly. (100 rs per hour per car)
Price it with FAST TAG.
Cars are the biggest problem. Occupy too much space. Even bikes and buses are not.
I understand many people here on this sub-reddit uses cars. But the thing is it's impossible for 30 lakh cars to ply on BLR roads.
  1. Expand reliable public transport 24 * 7. Add atleast 5000 buses.
Make small commutter buses also.
Make guards and police available everywhere. Women should also feel safe. Unless women, children feel safe. Public Transport is USELESS cause they will use CAUBER.
MAKE BUSES AVAILABLE AT EVERY PUB, BAR, MOVIE THEATER and Night Club late night.
Public transport should also be USEFUL to everyone. It should nor just exist just that a office transport.
In delhi you can see rich couples going for dates on metros.
Delhi Metro is Infact a hangout spot for couples. SUPER WIERD BUT it shows the trust people have on Delhi metro.
Usually men have to take cab or cars to take girls to Dates.
In Delhi and Singapore men give flowers in metro system.
WITH THIS, also make better pedestrian infrastructure. More secure walkable footpaths, cycle paths etc.
Make parks, markets in every neighborhoods.
  1. SEND all government officials for a Foreign tour to Singapore, Shanghai and Xiamen.
Let them be inspired and learn basics of urban planning.
Don't think it's a waste of money. Lot of African Countries are improving after thier leaders went to foreign trips and got inspired.
  1. Give building approvals only if they have enough car parking. No car parking no approval.
  2. Fine people buying cars without parking in apartment.
STEAL MONEY FROM people who use cars and invest the same in Public Transport Infrastructure.
Also at midnight tow all vehicles parked outside apartment and fine them massively. Or make ELECTRIC PARKING METERS.
  1. Also make SHARE AUTOS AND SHARE CABS LEGAL. Bangalore recently banned carpooling which is IDIOTIC.
Also CABS, Autos - Make it costly to get permits to ride in the city.
  1. lastly, INVEST in Road Infra too - Make more highways, express ways etc.
It's a growing country. Bangalore can't be stopped. TECH INDUSTRY IS the future. Which means Bangalore is the future.
No other city can beat Bangalore in tech, Talent available in Bangalore for tech is as good as talent available in Shenzen for manufacturing, Bay Area for Tech or London for finance.
Future is TECH. And Tech Industry works by Agglomeration. Unfortunately we can't decentralise tech industry development. Because of that Bangalore will rapidly grow over next 50 years. Just like BAy area in California. Bangalore will have some extreme growth.
Solution is to plan ahead with a vision. And not to be anti Industry or anti population.
Bangalore will EXPAND unless Bangalore itself commit suicide like how Kolkata/West Bengal killed itself.
Back in the day 1950s Kolkata was a big deal and bengal was poised to become Germany within India. But people and Government of Bengal decided to commit suicide by kicking out businesses and industries. Now Bengal is an industrial wasteland with no future and it's people migrating out.
That's not the solution. We should embrace people and business. That's how Bangalore can beat any global cities. Overpopulation will happen. But we should not be sad about it. Economics work on basis of Agglomeration. We should embrace it and make excellent mass rapid transit system like Delhi, Singapore and Shanghai.
Everytime I travel to bangalore. I believe harsh measures must be taken.
AGAIN, Also public transport should be improved. A LOT.
Without that harsh measures only make people's lives horrible.
Views are personal.

2024.01.12 16:38 ferdi_nand_k Disappointed by the Presentation of Kinmen Island by the German Magazine "Der Spiegel

I just saw this and want to hear your thoughts: I feel the German magazine "Der Spiegel" just presented the Kinmen in the wrong way in their video, I am pretty upset about that. They act like Kinmen is a military fortress, which is not true: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K84535V2jq0&t=233s
The tanks and barricades they show date back to the time of the first and second Taiwan Strait crises and are outdated. The island was a restricted area until 1995; however, today, most tourist attractions are managed by the Kinmen National Parks.
China regularly conducts military maneuvers, not only in Kinmen.
The artillery exercise is, in fact, a tourist attraction and takes place six times a week in a former bunker facility. They do not involve real soldiers practicing but rather constitute an entertainment show featuring a non-functional cannon. Only firecrackers are ignited. The bunker facility now serves as a museum named Lion Mountain Howitzer Park & Museum.
The majority of Kinmen's residents have a closer connection to China than the rest of Taiwan. There are family and business relationships, and the overall sentiment on the island is more oriented towards China. The pro-Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) has significantly more support than on the mainland. The largest group of tourists was previously Chinese, this has shifted due to the interrupted ferry connection to Xiamen during the COVID-19 period. Nevertheless, Chinese visitors are still warmly welcomed on the island. The example of the coffee producer is somewhat biased.
There is mention of the martial presentation of Kinmen, although the island is a tourist attraction, and the military facilities are mostly tourist attractions. Out of the formerly 150,000 soldiers, only about 10,000 are currently stationed in Kinmen. The situation has steadily relaxed since 1995.
The loudspeaker they show is also a remnant from the heated phase of the conflict. Nowadays, it serves as a tourist attraction and primarily plays pop music

2024.01.06 19:25 moondog151 A couple would travel city to city luring rich-looking people into their temporary hotels or apartments to rob and kill him.

(“ZKTel”), which supplies optical computer equipment such as modules and transceivers to Tier 1 companies in China’s datacom and mobile networking industries, is one of the lead customers for POET’s 100G optical engines.
POET and ZKTel have been collaborating to develop a 100G CWDM4 optical transceiver module using POET optical engines supplied by POET’s joint venture company, Super Photonics Xiamen (SPX). Each module contains a 100G CWDM4 transmit and a receive engine with monolithically integrated MUX and DMUX, directly modulated lasers (DMLs), and high-speed photodiodes. POET developed the product to suit ZKTel’s desired designs, demonstrating the flexibility of the optical interposer technology.
“We have been working with ZKTel for more than a year and are pleased to announce a design win for POET with another module supplier that will go into production in 2024,” said Dr. Suresh Venkatesan, POET’s Chairman and CEO. “ZKTel is a highly respected and significant player in the China datacom industry and to collaborate with them through SPX is further validation of POET’s commercial and technical strategy. ZKTel has a robust product portfolio and an expansive number of end users. Through this collaboration, POET and SPX have a roadmap with ZKTel that goes beyond the initial 100G CWDM optical engine sales.”
“At ZKTel, we are very pleased with the results we have seen with POET’s design and how it helps us meet the demands of our customers. We have been testing the optical engines internally and with our customers and the feedback has been excellent,” says James Wang, CEO of ZKTel. “We look forward to a long, prosperous relationship with the POET and SPX teams, and to deploying these products to increase the market share for ZKTel.”
ZKTel’s decision to move into single-mode optics sparked their interest in POET. The Company was an attractive choice because of the low capital expenditure and elegant architecture required to adopt the optical interposer. POET creates a low barrier to entry into the single-mode optics marketplace for ZKTel. In the production phase, SPX assembles and tests the optical engines at its state-of-the-art facility and ships optical engines to customers such as ZKTel. Customers use optical engine production samples to complete their internal qualification and start sampling modules to their end customers. This cycle typically takes 6 to 9 months before high-volume production can be expected. However, since ZKTel is in advanced stages of its module development, ZKTel expects to ramp to volume production in the second half of 2024.

From 1921 to 1927, the young Mao Zedong (portrayed by Wang Renjun), who had returned from the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), carried with him a deep concern for the future direction of the Chinese nation. In the process of unwaveringly practicing Marxist beliefs, he transformed from a follower into a pioneer and explorer with a questioning mind about the destiny of the Chinese people.
As a "trailblazer" and "early practitioner," Mao Zedong explored the correct path for the Chinese revolution. His historical journey included the development from youth into a party member, the initiation of the workers' movement, the first cooperation between the Kuomintang and the CPC, the resolute struggle against the rightists within the Nationalist Party, and the entry into the fields to measure the significance of the peasant movement for the Chinese revolution with his own footsteps.
Young Mao Zedong adhered to the essence of Marxism and Hunan culture, growing upward while rooting downward. He dared to be a pioneer and integrate knowledge with action. The road of questioning and exploration, symbolized by the phrase "Ask the vast earth, who determines the rise and fall?," is the path taken by young Mao Zedong and his comrades to open up a new horizon for the Chinese revolution. got a wonderful package in the mail the other day and had to let this fermented Oolong steep in my brain for a little bit before properly deciding I really enjoyed it.
two sides of the same coin with this pair and I think that’s the coolest thing. The Buddha’s Palm isn’t my favourite purely because I look for fruitier, sweeter notes in Oolongs, but it’s still super drinkable - so neat how that unassuming, fatty, cereal taste turned into something so sweet and dark with the fermentation process. oh how I would love to be a microbe eating tea all day.

2023.10.16 02:12 Chaithu14 PhD or enter workforce?

Hello ppl,
I'm currently a master's student in Chemical Engineering at Purdue. I will be graduating this December and I'm in a dilemma as to whether I should work as process engineer or start a PhD. I have got my bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering as well from Xiamen University between 2018 and 2022, and I immediately joined Purdue for pursing my master's, so I haven't been exposed to the industry much; although, I have done a couple of internships which were something that I didn't like doing at all.
Moving on, on one hand, I feel like I should really work as a process engineer for a while and think about PhD after a year or two. On the other hand, some of my friends say that now is really the time to pursue PhD and they say it becomes more difficult after I start working. I strongly believe I know what it takes to pursue a PhD and am confident of completing it once I start. During my undergrad itself, I have managed to publish 4 papers in Q1 journals and these have got 45+ citations now. I really like doing research and writing papers. Does this help during my PhD applications? Also, I would like to choose a topic in modelling and simulation area which is different from my undergrad research and the papers that I have published; they are more inclined towards biochemical and biotech. Should I go ahead and apply?
Here's my plan for now: I would like to apply to some best PhD programs in the US with start dates in Fall 2024 and simultaneously apply for process engineer jobs. I will then want to choose the best from them. If I get admitted for Fall 2024 in a university that I love, I might want to start a PhD there, but then I will still work until August as a process engineer. Does it sound like it works? What is your take on this?
Thanks for your time reading this post!

2023.10.12 09:30 jscratcher Phytosanitary Certificate

I am thinking about importing pieces of art from Shanghai to the UK - possibly on a regular basis in larger quantities. The pieces include dried plants, seeds and nuts. I understand that I (or the artist) need a phytosanitary certificate from Chinese Customs (Inspection and Quarantine Department). See am example attached. Does anyone know where, how to obtain this certificate? Has anyone ever gone (or attempted to go) through the process?

2023.09.19 12:19 Tasty_Rip5364 cabin bag size Xiamen Airlines

Are you planning to take a trip with Xiamen Airlines? If so, one of the most important things you need to know is the size of the cabin bag allowed on their flights. Having this information in advance will help you pack efficiently and avoid any last-minute surprises at the airport.
When it comes to cabin bag size, Xiamen Airlines follows standard industry guidelines. Passengers are allowed to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item on board. The dimensions for the carry-on bag should not exceed 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm (or 21.7 in x 15.7 in x 7.9 in). This size restriction ensures that your bag can easily fit in the overhead compartments or under the seat in front of you, providing you with a hassle-free travel experience.
It's important to note that Xiamen Airlines also has a weight limit for cabin baggage. The total weight of your carry-on bag and personal item should not exceed 5 kg (11 lbs). This limitation is in place to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers on board.
