Progress on a slow build
So as bad as I've felt recently being sick for the entire year so far, I thought sharing the slow progress on one of my many cyberdeck builds/design exercises would cheer me up a little and maybe give others inspiration.
So this is going to be, well is since I just don't have the shell yet, powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero 2w, has a 5 inch DSI lcd panel at 800x640, full keyboard, and touchpad, with USB C charging and 5v regulation (in progress), two 18650s in parallel for 6k-ish mah, mono audio through a speaker (once I find or make a DAC small enough to fit), and runs Debian in CLI to boot up Mac OS 8.5.5 in Basillisk II as the "main" OS w/wireless networking. The shells first iteration I'm showing is only about 150mm wide x 110mm deep x 25mm thick closed. It may get smaller as I finalize it and give it a little more style.
Runs great on my test bench so far even though I don't have pics of that at the moment. Before I start trying to make the shell I rendered, it still needs a way to attach the display bezel to the lid, mounts dialed in for the Zero 2w, video board, power circuit, and hinge mounts. Oh and the base frame needs attachment to the base shell, although I'm just considering being lazy and using visible screws. I really don't like visible screws and hope to keep them all hidden. Almost forgot I still need to work on the openings for the rubber keycaps to poke through and the mouse buttons/d-pad for arrows and selection of things. Yeah, they're not as nice as proper clicky switches and solid keycaps, buuuuuut at this size without making custom boards, it's what I have to work with.
The 2 green 18650s are accurately sized so you can get an idea of scale. The hinges I'm using are from an unknown laptop since I'm a hoarder with tech and strip all the goodies I can off things before trashing the rest w/out labeling anything for some reason. The batteries came as a factory matched set for a brand new laptop battery I stripped. Not looking forward to spot welding new tabs on them but hey, is what it is to have fun making your own devices. I just wanted a tiny computer to run some old Mac software I could fit in my purse or messenger bag when going places and tinkering with other Mac OS 7 & 8 machines i have. So here it is. So far. Ended up more laptop-ish than I'd like since I'm on the fence about running the extra gpio to the outside of the shell somewhere. Anyway.
My renders are in the paid version of AutoDesk Fusion 360 for anyone interested and ignore the text on the lcd model. I made an accurate model of that display for building in cad and added that so it's easier to find everything for it online if I lose my bookmarks again.

2024.05.16 03:31 Engineering_Geek Boomers OP! Learn how to get job like me now!

About me, Job compensation + benefits, CoL for reference

About me:
Compensation / Benefits:
Cost of Living:

Listen to the goddamn Boomers / Gen X folks here

As much as the older folks are 'behind the times', you need to remember who is still disproportionately in charge of companies and how they are structured, even in the tech sector. Hell, I had my dad (the BOOMIEST BOOMER I know) help me out.
I went to my 7th job fair after graduation about 2-3 months ago (Feb 2024) and my dad came with me as moral support. Just as usual with most job fairs, there isn't anyone there actively recruiting for engineering / IT / software roles because of the current market. BUT, my dad was having a 'fun' chat with the CTO of a random medium sized company and they both hit it off HARD. Both of them were born in the same part of India, went to the same temples there, and they just kept on chatting. Next thing I know, this same CTO came to me and asked if I was competent at engineering and he'd like to interview me on the spot, but sadly his company had no open software roles. I agreed.
I shit you not, this test was this simple and BLEW it:
  1. What is Ohms law? (I got this right)
  2. What is an inverter? (I got this wrong)
  3. What is a diode? What is it's symbol? (I got this right)
  4. Explain what an LED is and what it's symbol is. (I got this half right)
  5. What is the purpose of a rectifier? (I got this wrong)
  6. Questions about embedded C/C++ (I don't even know the language well T.T)
Thing is, the interviewer was really interested NOT in my capabilities or even my previous experiences. He was intrigued at just how many questions I asked and how I even asked some questions he didn't know the answer to, and how quickly I learnt the information. He told me to come to the company's HQ because he wanted me to meet the R&D manager.
1 week later
I met the R&D guy. Something I noticed is that this whole department was filled with dinosaurs. Not a single human within a 1 km radius appeared below the age of 50 outside of the technicians / trades folk. These dinos didn't even know how to post a job online without the help of HR (I'm sure everyone here knows how HR writes posts and filters applications). Just after half an hour of talking and the R&D manager apparently loved me because "this kid knows jack shit but he's a sponge, he'll learn faster than anyone else we got", which is apparently what R&D is actively looking for in fresh recruits.
Then bam-bam-boom, I got my position starting at this pay, with a guaranteed pay boost after onboarding + training is finished in 6 months, while I bombed every interview question / test. My position is as an R&D Engineer specializing in Embedded Design / Programming. Hell, one of my first projects is to tinker around and try to create and integrate a custom trained AI model with Altium to see if the autopathing system and autolayouts can be made better and human centric if possible.
I looked into this company's history and they have an average employee tenure of 10+ years without a single person ever being laid off ever since 1985. People wouldn't actively stay at a company that long without job hopping if the pay wasn't satisfactory or if it was toxic. Plus it was written into my contract that base pay is tied to inflation!
What are the lessons here?
  1. Don't quit. It's a shitty market, but a 0.01% chance is INFINITELY better than 0% if you stop trying.
  2. Have a boomer / gen x person help you network and connect you with other boomer / gen x people. Boomers and Gen X folks hire more based on word of mouth and interactions than younger folk like me who focus on the 'skills' part of the resume.
  3. Become a sponge. The more absorbent you are and the more questions you ask, the more the senior engineers will love you and actively want you on their team.
  4. Target industries that are filled with older folks in white collar positions (assuming you want white collar positions). Here are some examples:
    1. Metallurgy (filled with trades people and old engineers, they are actively looking for fresh blood in white collar areas).
    2. Agriculture (mechanization).
    3. Carpentry (same as metallurgy above).
    4. Welding companies (they have active R&D for building welding machines, just like metallurgy and carpentry sectors).
  5. Learn, learn, and learn. Especially for the first job you get, especially so if you don't have internships / co-op experience, people will look for your ability to learn. How fast can you learn everything we teach you?
  6. HR seldom knows what the company wants / needs when they post job listings. Getting out there and talking to NOT the recruiters but the engineers will give you that edge. Bonus points if you also do bullet point 2.
  7. Be ambitious with your future goals. Not just pretend; you'll run out of steam. If you are ambitious despite your current situation, people will see it and engineers / senior developers will like it. That was also one of the things a senior there liked about me and explicitly said "you're ambitions behind closed doors, I love it, you'll go far and I hope you take the company there with you; more profits for all of us!".
  8. Nepotism isn't the right word for how many here think of the job situation, it's just much MUCH more networking than previously thought. This has it's own issues like for those from disadvantaged / foreign backgrounds, but this world isn't fair, and that won't change reality.
Check my post history to know I was literally in your position just a few months ago. I hope this post helps people.

2024.05.16 03:25 DependentCalm5095 Thinking/considering a move to semi off grid Kootenays, BC from Montreal, QC

Hello dear fellow people,
Another 23589647th post about moving to BC.
Alright so this is the backstory, This is going to be a little long read;
So,
Been thinking about moving to BC from Montreal in the last few months/year, however this post might be different from previous topics posted here because the goal is kind of pretty different and specific;
Looking to experience a different lifestyle in a more quiet area to have some space and lone time while trying to have some social life around from time to time.
It would be a move to some small towns/remote vacant land with not so many people area the main reasons would be not to be around a lot of people and have a peace of mind and to live kind of secluded from the rest of the world and live in semi-autarchy and rely on almost nobody and do stuff like planting /harvesting fruits and vegetables /weed/mushrooms, own a shotgun for self defense and drive a F150, live with a woman and a dog/cat with that comes with it and not be bothered by anybody and be close to the outdoor (parks, ocean, beaches,...) but at the same time as stated earlier be able to participate to some social events from time to time.
It'd be mostly in the Kootenay Lake area which looks pretty nice and can be taken in consideration. The ideal dream would be going to some small towns around Nelson for example with some good communities nearby.
More likely to buy some small vacant land and build a cabin on it potentially. Sadly I don't have a lot of experience/skills in construction but twilling to learn.
About me: late 20s francophone immigrant from Europe who's been living in the country for quite a few years. Single no kids, trying to save as much money as possible.
Jobwise, it would be with a remote job so that wouldn't be an issue regarding bills and expenses but could rethink and reconsider another career path such as trades at some point, there are thoughts about living off the land but that's a whole other level of hardcore living.
Fully aware of the cost living in BC is abysmal (especially real estate) there, however with this lifestyle it might potentially be feasible somehow as expenses would be reduced and it could be the only way to own a home in this country.
There are some concerns and questions though;
People in BC are polite and chill but also passive/passive-aggressive, cliquey and not very accepting to foreigners. How hard is it to make friends there? Isn't there a big NIMBYism mindset in that area?
Since I'm a francophone from Europe, would that cause a problem? Used to live in Toronto and got some snarky remarks at times. Here in Montreal, it's okayish. Also you might find this a little silly, but would it be possible to access some services in French (ie healthcare)?
How is dating overall in BC? For sure options would be limited when you live in secluded areas for sure but how's that different from the east coast?
What about crime? someone from my home country got murdered while on a roadtrip westward to Vancouver.
How about the healthcare situation? Do you have to wait for hours in the ER to see someone? Does it also take months to see a doctospecialist? Is there good quality care though?
And then the wildfires? It really looked completely insane after having looked online and living close to a fire hazard area in the summer would be pretty worrying as it could burn down your house/cabin. With all the health related problems it would cause as well.
Are there any people in this group that are currently living this lifestyle and wouldn't mind sharing a little bit?
For the record, it's still being thought out and this move might happen within the next few years and is subject to change. You still have to learn on how to build and plan accordingly.
Plan on going on a roadtrip and live there for 6 months at least in about a year to taste the water (never been out west before).
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to answer!

2024.05.16 03:24 ObnoxiouslyConfusedd Questions wether or not my parents are really ‘that bad’..

So hello everyone. I chose to join this community because I really need people to reach out with 😭
sorry if thus makes no sense logically in the way I write, I’m kinda burnt out and just had to write a really stressful essay so my brain is completelyfried ☠️
tw: physical and mental abuse, SH, possible SA
since I was about 6-7, I moved into a new home. My mom sort of restarted herself, joining social medias and such, reaching out to friends. My dad just… is my dad. The stereotypical homophobic guy you read about. iykyk. since then, my mom has basically believed everything she sees. At around 7 1/2, she established a 30 minute screen time rule. If I broke it, i’d be grounded for 2 weeks. Sometimes I’d sneak into their room and use it, but was often caught. i grew up in a family where talking about things I liked would criminalize me. So I didn’t. I learned To not talk, to not feel in front of them. To be a perfect little kid. I grew Up hiding pretty much everything I didn’t want them to see. the pretty basic ‘you can talk to me’, etc was constantly on me- lovebombing, then yelling, etc etc.
so far I have a couple undiagnosed mental issues my parents both refuse To akoknowlege- autism, adhd. I can TELL on everything I have some form of OCD. The only medical condition that is confirmed it Motor Tick. It’s annoying as hell. I’ll get into that later.
according to my mom, and my dad but specifically my mom, I am ‘too young’ to know if I should be evaluated for any of the things I’ve preciously listed. I suffer day to day with overstimulation and panic attacks. She refuses to even take notice. I recently got into NJHS and she made it very clear I had to join. It wasn’t even a choice anymore. I ended up very stressed, as always.
according to my mom, which, to her, I am nothing but a Cishet girl, I need to be ladylike. Formal, even for school, dresses and skirts only. Only because of my amazing friends and boyfriend have I managed to wear anything but. I’m very dysphoric and have pretty severe body issues. Because of this I often self harm, which is dangerous because I do competitive swim and soccer, so there is very little places to hide scars.
a lot of my life I’ve been manipulated, forced into beliefs I don’t believe in- my entire family is Christian and look down upon anyone who isn’t. I’m the entire opposite. This causes arguments, especially when my mom checks my phone.
on my phone my mom downloaded a parental service called bark. Parents on here, if any.
please, please, please please please please lPlease PLEASE IM BEGGING YOU NEVER GET THIS FOR YOUR CHILD. If you really want a tracker, use a different one, like life360 or something, only under 15-16 or so, PLEASE. Don’t. It’s ripped ALL of my privacy, all of my life. I cant talk to my only online friends- my strongest connections. My best friends. People I love like siblings. people who were more of a father to me than my own.
winding Back to Motor Tick. For me, it used to be a repetitive clearing of my throat, but now it’s a small twitch in my upper stomach. It makes me twitch like I’m jumping at something that surprises me, but only I little. It’s only noticeable in some cases. But my mom and dad? They always notice. I do it while eatign without thinking, and suddenly I’m getting yelled at for disrespecting them. all the time. riding my bike? My bike gets taken if I twitch, wether it be from Motor Tick or not. Everything gets taken. I’ve had my HOMEWORK confiscated and then yelled at by my teachers because they don’t believe me.
speaking of punishments. Some often include: pushing down stairs, not being allowed to sleep, no food until after bedtime (strictly not allowed to leave room after, not even for water.) I have to stock food in my room which is also very not allowed.
my doors aren’t allowed to be locked, not even when changing. (this is the SA part Following this) My dad sits outside the door when I shower , sometimes watching the curtain, sometimes watching ME. He sometimes, to rub it in, will make comments on my body. My weight fluctuates due to my instability in many factors, so I’m constantly dissed for my weight, wether it be under or over HIS beauty standard. His. My DAD.
honestly why I’m saying all this is because I’ve been gaslighted enough to still want my parents around, even though I want so bad to get out of here and cut them off. And I don’t know if this is abuse or not. Help, also thanks for reading!

[First Contact] [Dark Ages] [First] [Prev] [Next] [wiki]
"Leave the sleeping dragons lie in peace" is a lesson that seemingly has to be taught to every wannabe conqueror over and over again.
Time after time, there will be a few idiots who only see the dragon's hoard, its cult of followers, and ignore the piles of rusted, slagged, calcified, scorched remains of every moron who tried before them. They see all of this and think "I can beat it to submission and take everything it has."
And then the dragon wakes up, and more smoldering remains are added to the scorched scrap heap.
And the Malevolent Universe grins in the darkness, and increases the "Dead morons who should have known better" counter by one. Then, waits for the next contestant. - u/Matt_Bradock, Terran Philosopher, Age of Paranoia, TerraSol

Captain N'Skrek checked his datalink.
The deep data storage was still at work bringing up information on "Legion" and "Sacajawea". The older databases of the Gray Lady had data at the ready, but it was sparse.
Two of the Biological Apostles of the Digital Omnimessiah, a figure of myth and legend.
Yet, they sat across from him.
They were talking back and forth in a language that the computer's linguistic database had no record of and stubbornly resisted any attempt to decipher it.
What N'Skrek did hear was several words that he recognized.
Daxin the Unfeeling. Daxin Freeborn. Chromium Saint Peter. Enraged Phillip. Matthias the Elder. Matthias the Younger. Kibuka. Kalki. Gravity.
A litany that left data scrolling down the empty space just beyond the edge of his peripheral vision.
Daxin "The Walking War Crime" Freeborn.
NavInt and MilInt were projecting with an 80% certainty (adjusted downward for unknown probabilities) that the beings in front of him were from that long bygone era.
Finally Captain N'Skrek cleared his throat.
The bald one, Legion, turned to look at the gathered staff officers.
"My apologies. I was catching my sister up on what has transpired since she disappeared," Legion said, smiling gently. He nodded. "You probably have questions."
N'Skrek nodded back. "The biggest one is: how did you..." he thought for a second. "Why did you..." no, that wouldn't work. "What bring about..."
Legion smiled.
"How did I replace all of your clones and why?" he asked. "Why is it that if you print off too many identical clones I show up?"
N'Skrek nodded. "Yes."
Legion looked at the Terran officers and smiled wider. It was a cruel smile, reminding N'Skrek of a hook pointed knife that had been sharpened to a keen edge.
"You didn't tell them? Have you really forgotten about me?" he asked.
"It was assumed to be still prevented by the cloning systems," Vice-Admiral Breakheader stated slowly. "We have only recently been restored ourselves. Less than two months time."
Legion just smiled.
Vice-Admiral Breakheader turned to look at Captain N'Skrek. "Running off too many identical clones causes Legion to manifest. It's why we use the Born Whole system, it ensures they have different brains, different expriences, and they have a slight variation to pore and retinal patterns, hair growth, minor things like that. Otherwise, Legion manifests."
"Why?" N'Skrek asked.
The Vice-Admiral sat silently for a moment before replying. "Because," was all he said.
Legion's smile didn't leave his face.
"Because it is my nature," he said.
Sacajawea said something and Legion replied in the same language, then turned to N'Skrek.
"My sister does not know why she was rebirthed," he said. He looked at her and spoke rapidly. She answered, only a few words, which made Legion reply at length. Again, only a few words.
"It must have been important," N'Skrek interrupted.
"She states that she does not know why the Immortals system did not rebirth her when she died," Legion said. He glanced at her. "She tells me that she died, with her people, when her peaceful planet was attacked."
"By the Mar-gite?" N'Skrek asked.
Again, more conversation.
"Yes," Legion answered. He frowned as she spoke again. "She says they were a peaceful planet. Anarcho-Primitivism. Very little technology. The Mar-gite attacked without warning."
She spoke rapidly and Legion listened.
N'Skrek saw the computer still was not able to parse the language, even though it could build a lexicon of off very little data for almost any other language it encountered.
Legion turned and faced N'Skrek. "She states that she believes it was the fact that some of her people demanded that high technology be left in place in order to allow the six planets her people had settled to remain in contact. That the high tech farming and sustenance industries led the Mar-gite to attack her."
Again, Sacajawea spoke, her head lifted, looking down at Legion.
"Why she was not reborn is unknown to her. She had guided and shepherded her people for thousands of years before the outsiders came. Outsiders drawn by technology, by the abandonment of the old ways," Legion said. He was frowning as he spoke rapidly.
The conversation took a few minutes.
"She said the outsiders came and wiped her people out after entire generations held them off. That in the final battle, they overcame her when her strength failed," Legion said. There was more talking. "She's describing the Mar-gite."
"Where was this?" N'Skrek asked, bringing up a map of the galaxy. "The First Mar-gite War was only three hundred years prior to the Council-Confederacy Conflict and lasted nearly a hundred years," the brought up a sketchy timeline of the era. "When did you encounter the Mar-gite and where?"
Sacajawea spoke again at length. Legion spoke back. It grew heated for a moment before Legion looked at N'Skrek.
"She will not say. She does not want us to defile or desecrate the worlds her people settled. She does not want us to know when or where," he said.
"That might be pertinent information," N'Skrek said. "Important information to keep the Mar-gite from overwhelming the Cygnus-Orion Spur."
Sacajawea spoke quickly, heatedly, half standing up. Legion put his hand on her shoulder, obviously encouraging her to sit down, but she shrugged, throwing off Legion's hand, and her speech got more heated, her eyes flashing with anger.
"She says she will not reveal her people's resting place for us to dig up the graves and desecrate them. That it is not anyone's business where The People have gone or what The People have done," Legion said. He turned and answered her.
The conversation got heated as the N'Skrek and the officers watched.
Finally, Sacajawea stood up and turned around, folding her arms across her chest, lifting her chin.
Legion's skin darkened with anger.
"Then you can tell them that load of bullshit yourself, little sister," he snapped.
He suddenly vanished in a swirl of black powder that evaporated.
N'Skrek saw that Sacajawea was shocked by Legion's disappearance. She stood there for a long moment.
"Dhruv?" she asked mid-air.
N'Skrek motioned his officers to stay silent.
"Dhruv?" she snapped, stomping one foot.
Still silence.
"Luke!' she half-shouted, stamping her foot again.
She turned and looked at the gathered staff officers, who were all staring at her.
"Legion?" she asked quietly.
N'Skrek held up one bladearm.
"It appears, Miss, that you will have to speak for yourself."
Sacajawea frowned and clamped her lips together.
N'Skrek just stared mildly.
your name was tiffany

you were created to serve the deshmuhk family
you were a gardener and a menial
but you have risen above that
Jaskel had just gotten a plate of food and sat down in one corner of the cavernous Dining Bay Twenty-Three.
True, it was a little bit of a walk from the Telkan Marine section to that particular dining facility, but for some reason Jaskel liked the food put out by Nutriforge-Eight better than any of the others.
Like the Gunny always said, it was the little things that count.
He had arranged his silverware, his drink, and given a short prayer when he suddenly wasn't alone.
A slender man in an unfamiliar uniform suddenly appeared at one of the tables on the far side of the Dining Bay. Jaskel watched as two more stepped out of the first. They all sat down and started talking rapidly.
To Jaskel, it sounded like an argument.
It looked like one person arguing with himself.
Jaskel ate quietly and slowly, trying to avoid attracting attention, but watching the Terran out of the corner of his eye.
Terrans were universally half-crazy.
And a Terran arguing with clones of himself was probably full blown crazy.
That, and Jaskel remembered how negligent the display of power had been that had left him hanging upside down in mid-air.
Much to the amusement of his squad mates who watched the video and laughed.
He was down to dessert when the far door opened and a woman entered. Jaskel recognized her instantly as the young adult Terran woman who had appeared nude from the cloning banks, even though she was clad in clothing made of brown material and decorated with beads.
She immediately made a bee-line for the man, who had gotten a plate with a piece of pie on it while the other two argued between each other.
She stopped and stomped on foot, staring down at the sitting man.
"You look stupid," the man, Legion, said when she stopped next to him.
"Dhruv," she snapped. She rattled off words that Jaskel's datalink couldn't translate.
"Not talking to you until you speak Confederate Standard. I know you know it," Legion/Dhruv stated.
She stomped her foot again. "Luke!" she snapped.
Legion looked up. "Part of me, a large part of me, feels that you lost the right to call me by that name."
He went back to eating the pie. When the woman looked at the two clones who were staring at her, they stared back for a moment then puffed into black dust that swirled and vanished.
Jaskel kept watching out of the corner of his eye.
"Dhruv," she snapped.
"Go away, Sacajawea," Legion said.
She stood there for a moment. Then she suddenly leaned forward and slapped the plate of pie away from Legion.
"I will not call you Legion," she suddenly said as the plate clattered against the far bulkhead.
"Go away," Legion said. He looked up. "Let me put it in a way you might understand better: I just want left alone."
The woman stepped back, one hand going to her mouth.
"Yeah, still scared of him, aren't you," Legion said. He stood up. "Or are you?" he moved so he was clear of the table. "Were you ever afraid of him, Sacajawea, or was it all an act?"
Sacajawea looked away. "He was everything wrong with the world, a living reminder of what kind of men destroyed my people."
Legion suddenly laughed. "You forget history, little sister. But, of course, you never had any use for history unless it served your own ends."
Sacajawea stomped her foot. "Dhruv, be nice."
"No," Legion said, his voice low and intent. "I have yet to hear you thank me for what I did in the cloning bay, much less what I did for you before you ran off and left me holding the bag."
your name was luke
remember remember
your name was luke
"I came back to find Matthias the Elder standing over the sundered murdered code of the Digital Omnimessiah," Legion said. "Then Daxin showed up, Matthias claimed I killed our Digital Father, so I ran."
"And he followed. Intent on killing you," Sacajawea sniffed.
"Yes!' Legion said. "Of course he did! I would have chased me in that situation," Legion said. He stepped forward. "And where were you, Little Sister, when it happened?"
She looked away and sniffed. "I was performing my duty, serving my people. As you well know."
Legion turned around, facing away from her. "Yeah, the people you had me bake up," he turned back around. "Not the poor bastards fighting a slowly losing war against the Mantid. They were your people too, but you left them behind. If it wasn't for the Mechakrautlanders, they'd be extinct with the rest of humanity."
"They had set aside the old ways. I told you that," Sacajawea said. She gave a sniff and turned her head away. "They were too consumed by blood lust, they would not stop fighting, would not embrace the old ways."
"EVERYONE WAS FIGHTING!" Legion shouted in a voice that made Jaskel's drink glass rattle. "There were hab-kids fighting and dying in destroyed hab-blocks in the ruins of megalopolises. It had nothing to do with 'the old ways', it was a fight for survival."
"You would not understand," Sacajawea said. She gave another sniff, still looking away. "I took my people away from where technology and the abandonment of the ways of our people had led us."
Legion stood still for a second.
"Don't give me that shit about your 'people', remember, I touched you. I know the truth," Legion said. He shook his head. "You had a task. A task to help us, help our Digital Father, help all of humanity, but you abandoned it."
"I had a task to help my people," Sacajawea sniffed. "I owed nothing to the world that stood aside or actively took part while my people were destroyed," she looked at Legion. "You wouldn't understand."
Jaskel could see purple electricity snarling around Legion's boots, clawing at the deckplates with thread-thick fingers.
"You were supposed to guide us along the path to the SUDS, so we could save everyone, Sacajawea," Legion said. "You betrayed us. Betrayed them. You were supposed to save them."
"Like they saved my people, Luke?" Sacajawea asked.
"You don't call me that any more, little sister," Legion said. "For the love of the Detainee, fucking let go of shit that doesn't matter any more. We humans have been genocided repeatedly since then."
"I'm not calling you Legion. That reeks of arrogance and pride," Sacajawea said. "And it matters to me, Luke."
"You talk a lot of shit for someone named Bird Woman," Legion snapped back. "How about I call you Tiffany?"
Sacajawea took a step back. "That is not my name. That was never my true name."
"You forget. I could see under that skin job. See who you were born as. I knew the truth, and I've kept it secret for all these eons," Legion said. He turned away. "You left us, left humanity behind on your so-called quest."
He turned back to face her.
"Now, again, we're facing extinction. The Mar-gite, they wiped you out. Now they're here in overwhelming force to the point where I'm not even sure Fortress Sol can hold them off," Legion said. "And you still want to play pretend."
He turned his back on her.
"You're no different than Matthias the Elder," Legion said quietly.
There was a dreadful silence for a long moment.
"I told Daxin, sitting in the parking garage where we used to meet, that we had to let go of the past. Learn from it, admit it happened, but we had to let it all go. The old hatreds, the old angers, the old rage," Legion said softly. "He agreed. He said perhaps it was time for us to leave the mortals behind. Let them go without us dragging baggage from worlds and events dead and gone behind us."
Sacajawea sniffed. "It's different for the two of you, neither one of you had your people..."
"I was a short bake slave clone, Tiffany," Legion said, his voice still soft and quiet. "Just like your family owned."
Sacajawea opened her mouth to answer, her eyes flashing hotly.
"One of millions grown in a vat every year. Made in humanity's image but without its grace," Legion's voice was nearly a whisper. "Our little band of siblings, only Kalki, Gravity, and Daxin came from families that did not order one of me from an online catalogue. Even Bellona lived with my people performing menial labor for her colony."
Sacajawea stepped forward, obviously about to deliver a scathing retort.
"But my people didn't count, did we, Tiffany?" Legion asked. He gave a deep sigh. "I loved you, you know."
Her mouth closed. She looked confused.
"When you left, I created another of you," Legion said quietly. "She was, of course, captured by the Imperium, like all of the Biological Apostles," he looked down at the floor. "It was why they didn't know you'd escaped."
Jaskel wished he was anywhere but in the dining bay.
"Eventually, that version of you threw off the Imperium's chains like we did. She went back to Terra. Worked tirelessly to rebuild. Eventually, led the Dandelion Fleet that became the Sky Nebula Alignment."
It was silent except for the muted sounds a starship under power in Transit Space made.
"I'll go back with you. Translate for you," Legion said, his voice still soft. He turned to face the woman.
"Just... just stop lying, Tiffany," he said.
He was silent a moment.
"I had hoped that it was that version, my version, the version I had been madly in love with, that version of you that had been rebirthed," he said. "The version who guided her people, who succored them, who helped them rebuild, who helped them thrive in the scarred and shattered world Earth had become. I had hoped, when I saw you, that you were her."
the buzzing can still be heard
your name is legion
"But it's just you."
0-0-0-0-0
Captain N'Skrek watched as Legion led Sacajawea into the briefing room.
He had been busy looking up every scrap of information on the Digital Omnimessiah, the Biological Apostles, Legion, and Sacajawea.
Of all of them, information was scarcest, almost non-existent, on Sacajawea.
He waited as the Terran woman took a drink from the glass in front of her.
She looked around.
"During the Human-Mantid War, before the destruction of the Overqueen by the forces of MechaKrautland, before the Liberation of Terra," she started. She closed her eyes, sighed, and opened them. "I begged Vat Grown Luke, who you know as Legion, to clone my people and help me repair and then hijack four colony transports crashed in the Middle Kingdom."
She looked down and Legion reached over and took her hand. She looked startled for a moment, squeezed Legion's hand gently, and looked back up.
"I led my people away. From the Imperium, from Terra, from the War," she said. She reached out and touched the holo-emitter, bringing up a map of the Milky Way. She touched a single arm.
"I led them here. For over eight thousand years my people knew peace, prosperity, and plenty," she said. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and exhaled sharply.
N'Skrek recognized it as a sign of stress in Terrans.
"Roughly twelve hundred Terran Standard Years prior to the Council-Confederacy Conflict, we were attacked," she said. She looked down. "I had sworn to protect my people, to use my powers to protect my people, which had grown to fill six worlds."
She looked back up.
"The Mar-gite destroyed my people in under a decade," she said. She looked down again. "And me with them."
"A glitch in the system prevented her from moving to Afterlife or being rebirthed," Legion said. "A glitch I had caused when I helped her."
"The Mar-gite destroyed my people here," Sacajawea said, her voice filled with pain.
A single cluster of six stars burned brightly.
Deep in the Scutum-Crux Arm.
your name is legion

2024.05.16 02:12 sheriffderek Massive Skill Gap: Are Coding Bootcamps and New Developers Missing the Mark? A recent chat with DonTheDeveloper.

A few weeks ago, someone posted a link to one of Don’s rants and I went through and commented on each of the points. I can't find that post, but I had copied it over here: https://www.reddit.com/perpetualeducation/comments/1c7k9re/donthedeveloper_on_a_rant_about_how_aspiring/
We had a chat about it. Here’s the video/podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHmqZkC3LqU&lc
Don titled it: There's a MASSIVE Skill Gap Among New Developers
I'll attempt to write a bit about that - (even though we went over many other topics - and I'm having a hard time grouping them)
It’s easy to simplify this into “the market” or “the boot camp” or “the tech stack” or "what's fair" or "the resume" - but I think people are missing the various multidimensional aspects at play. Is it:
Is it all of those things - and more? (Yes). And it's "the student" too." We're all different (cue reading rainbow moment). But it's true. Some of us are slower. Some of us are faster but miss the details. Some of us have a background that alignes neatly with tech. Some of us already know what job we want and why - and other people just want to make a good bet on a stable career. No matter what zone you're in, we still have to face the music - and deal with (trigger alert) - the truth.
The market is real. Companies aren't aggressively hireing random barely capable developers right now (like they have in the past). They're scared and holding on to their money. They also kinda realized they were spending more money on middle management and probably developers too - and are going to need some time to figure out how to make profitable businesses (or how to keep getting more VC funding to burn through).
But if there's a huge gap between your skills/experience and what it takes to do the job you're applying for, none of the other factors matter.
Many people choose a coding boot camp based on superficial factors like the price, the timeline, the website design, and the sales pitch. They often don't consider other important aspects because they simply don't know better. This isn’t unlike any other product or service or school.
Some people pick out a boot camp and learn a bunch of awesome stuff and they go out there and start a new career and for some reason, they don’t come back to Reddit to tell us about it. There are some legit colleges and boot camps and other alternative learning paths out there - that are really great. It's just a fact.
If you read the bootcamp marketing, paid your tuition, went through the steps they lined out, and came out the other end unable to get that job they promised you, well - that’s awkward. Maybe for you, it’s that simple. If you feel like you got a raw deal, I’m sorry. There are some businesses that should be ashamed of themselves - but they won't be. All you can do is warn other people. That’s over now. We can only work with the present.
For people who really want to work in this industry - they'll keep moving forward: at the end of the day, this is the playing field. So, if you want to get off the bench, we’re going to have to design a path to that – and you might need to rethink some of your assumptions.
It could certainly be said that new developers are now expected to know about–and have experience with–a lot more things.
Are the expectations that someone brand new to development is going to be able to get a job unreasonable? Well, does it matter what someone’s opinion about that is? You either want the job - or you don’t. And you need to know how to do the job, or no one will hire you. Do you need to know everything on this huge list to get an entry level position https://roadmap.sh/javascript ? (no) (in fact - close that - and don’t ever look at it again)
When I started (at the age of ~30) (in ~2011), you needed to know HTML, CSS, (Probably some PhotoShop to get your assets), maybe a little PHP (and likely HTTP and more about URLs and request types and forms), FTP and DNS to get your site hosted, and maybe some JavaScript. You might have used jQuery to help out or Knockout.js. And you had to know how to hook up a database and MySQL and probably a CMS or some sort. And maybe your code was a mess or maybe it adhered to some common patterns. But that was life. Not everyone needed to know all those things. Some people would focus more on getting the mockup into the HTML and CSS. Other people might focus on the server and the PHP or Perl or Java. There were all sorts of jobs and some of them were done by people with a formal education in Computer Science studies and other people just figured it out as needed. There was a lot of work to be done. Lots of custom stuff to build and maintain. And it was just normal to learn more incrementally as the years went by. You could totally get a job knowing just HTML and CSS (and you still can BTW). There was still an infinite amount of things you could know. But it seemed to ramp up naturally because we were closer to the grain of The Web.
So, what do people learn now? (Generally) They rush through some HTML and CSS really quick (which actually teaches them more bad habits than good). They rarely learn about DNS or FTP because a tutorial showed them how to type a few random things into a terminal to have their site on a free service and they don’t buy a domain name because there’s a free subdomain. Apparently paying for anything is for suckers and companies that don't give you things for free are evil capitalistic pigs who should be shut down. New devs don’t know much about servers because their text editor is actually running an advanced web application behind the scenes that starts a virtual server and runs all sorts of other things they don’t understand outside of that context - like connecting to version control, opening a terminal pane, SSH, code completion and typeahead, autoimport completion, AI suggestions and other additional layers like typescript and many other linters to tell them where all their errors are. If they couldn't use VSCode - they might be dead in the water. It can feel like you’re just a bag of meat being yelled at by VSCode as you try and solve the errors and remove all the red lines. And we do all of these - to put the training wheels in place.
And I’m not saying that a LAMP stack doesn’t have it’s own level of black-box and mysteries with how Apache handles your HTTP requests and MySQL starts up it’s own server - but we have to be comfortable with some level of abstraction or we’d be writing all ones and zeros at the machine code level.
So, the new developer is manning this huge stack of tools unknowingly, but they do get a lot of benefits. We can spin up a pretty complex web application with a front-end to make requests, a server to talk to a database and other third-party systems and respond back to the client/front-end, and an auth layer to make sure people are properly signing in and only seeing what they need to see. There are abstractions for HTML and CSS and JS that put that template logic and controller logic into a neat little component file (which is great) and that component file is properly registered based on file name conventions and everything gets set up in this larger system of conventions that all happen behind the scenes in the framework architecture. So, as a new developer - you can really ride the framework and know hardly anything about how it works - as long as you know the language to speak to this layer of the abstraction (the API).
These aren't just arbitrary add-ons that people made to complicate things. They solve real-world problems. The new dev won't really understand what they are - but I'm not saying we should just get rid of them. They allow us to move faster and to build interfaces and business logic without having to write tons of behind the scenes repeated structural code by hand. And with those training wheels, we have more time on our hands. We can also add in the chance to further define our programs with safety measures and plan automated testing routines, and built-in documentation of our code base. We can keep adding layers and layers or pull in more and more third-party tools. It’s pretty amazing. But what people end up learning is how to maintain that configuration - and there’s only so much time - and so, they end up learning 10% of all the things you used to need/want to know. And some jobs have a path for that. But there's likely going to be a long-term cost for you.
Arguably - it doesn’t matter how much “code” you know - and making things is what matters. And that’s true. That’s what matters to the business that pays you. And to the school that wants you to feel good about your progress. But I think you should protect your learning journey. It’s for you. It’s going to be what you carry on throughout the years and it’s a seed.
Getting proficient with a popular tech stack - when the market is booming proved to be a great decision for boot camps and their students. And I'd bet that the majority of people mean well.
But when it's not booming, students are in it for the wrong reasons, schools have tightened up and moved online, the market has plenty of devs who already have 5+ years working with that framework/stack -- then all of the sudden - the surface-level fake-it-till-you-make-it path (as much as I respect that) doesn't work as well. You're going to have to put in some more energy.
When it's obvious that you can't build an HTML page with semantic markup, that's accessible, and has a universally pleasurable experience, and you can't write CSS without a UI framework or do anything custom, it's obvious. You should be aware of that gap. When you've never owned a domain name or setup a deployment pipeline, you should be aware of that gap. When your personal website looks like your boot camp gave it to you, you should be aware of how that looks. When you can't take a server-side scripting language like Python or Go or PHP and build out a little personal website framework - you should be aware of that gap. When you can't plan a project and don't have experience with diagrams and explaining things, you need to be aware of that gap. When you've never written about your process or created any case-studies to explain your projects, you should be aware of that gap. When you're only proof of work is the class assignments, you should be aware of that gap. When your github history goes dead after the last day of class, you should be aware that we'll see that. When you claim to no nothing about visual design and that's for someone else on the team - you should be aware of that gap. If you refuse to turn on your camera and just want to be left alone, you should be aware of that huge gap. If you can't build a little prototype app without React, they you probably don't JavaScript, and you should be aware of that gap. And there will ALWAYS be a gap. There's always more to learn. So - it's an important skill to know what to learn and why - and when. You can't learn everything. And if you're having a hard time finding work right now, then get clear on your goal. Stop applying for general "Software engineer" jobs you aren't ready for. Narrow your scope. Figure out a job that you think you can do confidently. Get clear on how big your gap is and what you need to learn to get centered and confident with your toolset. Ideally, it's fun. Try and ignore all the doom and gloom and focus on your own personal goal.
It's not just the market. Too many people are applying for jobs they aren't anywhere near qualified to do. And it probably doesn't feel good. But luckily - you can learn the things and get back on track.

2024.05.16 02:05 zombiphile_68 No more “build your own”?

No more “build your own”?
Our store just got bought by a new owner. A lot of things she and her employee she got from one of her other stores are telling me have been very concerning in a lot of ways. One thing is no more “build your own”? Basically now no matter what someone orders we need to put extra cheese on it and make is as close to a Subway Series sub as possible even if it means screwing with inventory. For example: if you want a rotisserie sub we have to put extra cheese on it and charge it as the All-Pro Teriyaki. If someone wants a turkey sub we have to make it a Titan and if they don’t want extra cheese and meat we still have to charge it as a Titan. However, all the build your own subs are still on the website and app to order online. She also tells me the only sub I can have for break is one of the regular turkey, ham, etc after telling me they don’t exist. She has 17 subways now and I’m told this is how she does things at all of them.

2024.05.16 01:15 FigCapable5007 Struggling with my sin

My biggest issue right now is I am struggling so bad with my sinful nature right now. I am in college and it’s been so hard for me to do my homework and everything, I’ve been being lazy and putting it off and I’ve not been getting good grades because of it. The only thing I can put my mind to is reading Gods word, praying, and online fellowship. I don’t want anything in this world I don’t want what this world has to offer, I just want Gods love. I want to be free from my sinful nature and this sinful earth and I want to do only what God says is good. But I realize God is keeping me here for a reason, and so I must find a way to honor God through that. I don’t want fame or success or money or approval, I just want his pure love. My parents want me to go to college, and I feel like it’s my sinful nature that wants to disobey them and do my own thing. But I also don’t reeeally know. Because I know they’re imperfect and I know they don’t know all things like God does, but what I do know is God wants us to honor our parents. But it’s so hard, I don’t want to do anything that I can’t tell is helping with my relationship with God directly. Like it’s hard for me to put in hard work if I can’t directly see if what I’m doing is building my relationship with him. It’s hard for me to obey my parents when I know they don’t know all things like God does. And I know and I’m sure it’s just my sinful nature fighting against my spirit, but it’s really hard. It’s so hard for me to fight against my flesh, especially when I know how flawed the world is. It’s so hard for me to put effort into obeying others when I know they can’t be compared to God. At least with praying, reading the Bible, and fellowship like I know I’m getting closer to him and that’s all I have to think about. When I do that all I have to think about is getting closer to him, but if I have to think of doing anything else or anything remotely related to anything else it is so hard. I want to have faith in God in all things, so when he tells me to honor my parents I want to do it, but it’s so hard actually doing it. It’s just so hard to actually do and completely trust that I need to do other things than learn about him. Cause I just want him. I don’t want anything else, I don’t get why he wants me to do anything else but focus on him like I am right now. I don’t get why I’m still on this earth I don’t want to be here I want to be with him. But I have to trust that I’m here for a reason and that he loves me. It’s just really hard to relate that I’m not here for myself but for God to other parts of my life. Idk if this makes any sense but I hope you guys get where I’m coming from and can understand what I’m saying. I fail so much I fail so so so much when I have trouble focusing on things that I can’t see are actually helping my relationship with him. I used to live for myself and now I do for him so sometimes it’s hard to see what’s for him and what’s for me. I don’t want to succeed, I want to be sinless and I don’t know how to do that without him. If I’m not focusing on him or if I get distracted by something else, I don’t know what to do. And so often with my parents I get distracted and I can’t focus on God completely cause my sin distracts me and I can’t tell what from them is good or bad. I can’t tell. But I know they have been wrong before, I know I’ve been wrong before, so I don’t want to focus or be distracted by either of us I just want to focus on God. BUT THEN AGAIN I KNOW GOD SAYS TO HONOR THY FATHER AND MOTHER SO I DONT KNOWEW 😭 how can I honor someone and obey and listen to someone who doesn’t know what’s truly best for me like God does. How can I trust them? It’s just really hard. Hard to focus on God in every aspect that he wants me to.

2024.05.16 01:07 Vast-Equal-4425 I am trying to make Web3 owning NBA teams, AMA

It's been over 15 years since Satoshi Nakamoto introduced Bitcoin, igniting discussions on how Web3 could reshape traditional financial systems, build a better world, solve poverty, and break monopolies. However, after 15 years, large funds and VCs have begun to dominate the Web3 space, somewhat overshadowing the decentralized ethos it originally promised.
Despite these challenges, I believe it's time for Web3 to reclaim its potential, not through token governance, but through actual governance of real-world assets, like NBA teams.
Who am I? I'm MingDynastyVase (https://twitter.com/MetaDynastyVase), an engineer in the Web3 sector and a fervent NBA fan and NBA Top Shot NFT collector.
My Dream Owning an NBA team has always been a dream of mine. Despite being a middle-class kid without extraordinary means, I've nurtured this dream by investing in Madison Square Garden Sports stocks, aspiring to participate in what I consider the ultimate fantasy game.
Inspiration from Web3 Inspired by Don Tapscott’s "Blockchain Revolution," I've realized how decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) could manage real-world businesses. Within the NBA Top Shot community, I've met others who share a deep love for the league and believe in Web3’s potential.
My Plan Traditional DAOs have often been criticized for centralization, where a few control the many. I aim to diverge from this by rallying the passion and fandom of the community rather than just fundraising through tokens. Here's how I envision it:
  1. Community Building: Gather fans and potential investors in an online community.
  2. Smart Contract Development: Launch a smart contract allowing participants to show their willingness to invest while maintaining control of their assets. See the prototype here: https://etherscan.io/address/0x46c5264728af4dbe274929f9509fbeabf8cca2c9
  3. Legal Framework: Establish an LLC to handle regulatory and legal frameworks.
  4. Network Growth: Expand our community, connect with players, team owners, and notable public figures.
  5. Deal Negotiation: Initiate fundraising only when a real opportunity to purchase NBA shares emerges, ensuring transparency throughout the process.
  6. Tokenization: Distribute tokenized shares to all investors.
  7. DeFi Integration: Develop a DeFi platform leveraging the tokens to enhance Web3 utility.
Benefits for You
By transforming fans into owners, we not only democratize team ownership but also integrate the passionate spirit of sports with the transformative potential of Web3.

NSFW & Spoiler Guidelines
  • For Self Posts: include a bolded NSFW note next to links in that post.
  • For Links to sites/images: If the figure is NSFW, or the website has any NSFW content (including ads) be sure to tag your post NSFW and use the appropriate link flair.
Bootlegs
Any collection posts containing bootlegs, comments advocating buying bootlegs, or links to sites selling bootlegs, recasts, or unlicensed merchandise will be removed.
People often ask about the legitimacy and/or safety of a number of websites which sell large resin statues. The more commonly-asked of those deal primarily in resins from studios which do not have a license from the Japanese IP holders to produce merchandise. Therefore links to those sites are not permitted here. Another sign is if MyFigureCollection doesn't list the either the statue, its manufacturer, or the shop it's being sold on.

Buying & Shipping

1. What’s the best place to buy my anime figures from?
That’s going to depend a lot on what works for you, but most people around here buy them from Amiami, Big in Japan, Hobby Search, HobbyLink Japan, or Tokyo Otaku Mode. If none of those work for you for whatever reason, there’s a list of reputable retailers in the sidebar that you can check out at any time. Be extra careful when ordering figures from websites like Amazon or ebay, as there are a lot of bootlegs on those sites. Don’t be afraid to ask in our Bootleg Megathread if you’re unsure.
2. What differences are there between the shipping options I get from most Japanese shops?
Below is a rundown of the main shipping choices you’ll get at most retailers. Keep in mind that if an order is large enough you will be forced to use one of the more expensive options, as SAL shipments have lower size and weight restrictions.
  • Unregistered SAL: Sometimes referred to as uSAL, is usually the cheapest method. It does not come with any tracking or insurance. Usually takes up 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • Registered SAL: Sometimes referred to as rSAL, is insured for the declared value up to 6,000 yen. It comes with a tracking number and usually takes 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • EMS: This method of shipping is much faster than either SAL options, usually arriving within a week of shipment. EMS shipments are insured for the declared value up to 2,000,000 yen.
  • Airmail
  • E-packet
  • Surface: Shops don't offer this very often. It's an actual cargo ship and slow as a result.
  • DHL: Becoming more available as an alternative to EMS on AmiAmi and other sites. Can be less expensive than EMS and of comparable speed, but may be more reliant on the specific geographical area being shipped to. The price is also determined by the size of the box. Offers their own tracking.
3. I placed two+ orders for figures at different times. Will my items be shipped together, or will I have to pay shipping twice?
Most shops will ask you to pay shipping on a per-order basis, but here are some that will allow combined shipping:
  • Amiami: You can combine orders here, as long as the orders ship in the same month. It doesn’t matter if the item is new or preowned. Any preorders that are set for that month can also be combined with other orders for that month. However, be aware that if the preorder gets delayed, Amiami will remove that item from that month’s shipment and place it on a new order. To combine orders on Amiami, use the “Combine Orders” feature under “My Account”.
  • Hobby Search: Hobby Search will let you combine orders that release in the same month, but you cannot combine in stock items with preorders. If you want to combine multiple preorders, or multiple in stock items, you can do so using the “Order Recombination” feature on your account page.
  • HobbyLink Japan: At HLJ, you have the option to send paid orders to their “Private Warehouse”, where you can store them for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to ship the items, you simply select which items to ship and HLJ will combine them into one shipment for you. To use this, just select the “Private Warehouse” option as shipping when you order.
If you’re unsure about whether or not a shop we haven’t listed will combine your orders, please refer to their individual FAQs.
4. When will I get charged for my preorder?
Most Japanese shops charge you once the item is in stock and ready for shipment. When that happens, they will send you an email asking for payment. Some shops (mostly overseas ones), will allow you to pay for the item up front though, if you’d like. A few with that option are:
  • Big in Japan (Japanese store)
  • Tokyo Otaku Mode
  • Anime Island
  • Crunchyroll
Keep in mind that overseas stores will likely get the figure a few months after Japanese ones, so pay attention to the release date stated on the website you are buying from so as to avoid that confusion.
5. Should I expect to pay customs fees when importing figures?
That depends on where you live. Here’s a quick rundown:
  • Australia: 10% GST is now assessed up front.
  • Canada: Minimum declared value for charges is around CAD$20 for regular shipments, and CAD$60 for gifts (gifting something only seems to lower the declared value by about CAD$40, not deplete it completely). When using Amiami, try their Small Air Packet option. It comes with tracking, gets there in about the same time as EMS, and is better at avoiding customs.
  • European Union: As of 1st July 2021, VAT has to be paid on all goods imported from outside of the EU. Retailers are supposed charge VAT for purchases under €150, however many Japanese retailers currently do not, so VAT will be charged when your order arrives in the EU. Orders that are >€150, VAT and duty will be charged by your local customs.
  • UK: As of 1st January 2021, VAT is to be charged by retailers for orders <£135. However, customs isn't currently charging VAT on parcels valued at <£135, even if the VAT hasn't been paid. Goods >£135 will have their VAT and duty calculated and charged by customs.
  • Mexico: Minimum declared value for customs fees is USD$300 for shipments by post, and USD$50 for shipments by courier.
  • United States: A shipment has to have a declared value of USD$2,000 before customs starts hitting you with fees, so you most likely won’t have to worry about them at all.
6. The figure I want is an exclusive, how do I go about ordering one outside of Japan?
You have three options for this:
A. Big in Japan is known to stock exclusive figures and ship to other countries. Usually the price is higher because they build in their proxy fees, but it’s easier than worrying about using a forwarder or proxy service. If you live in the US, Crunchyroll, Right Stuf, and Tokyo Otaku Mode also get exclusives sometimes, but out of the states the shipping can get expensive.
B. Forwarding Services: A forwarder is someone who you ship an exclusive item to so that they can forward the package on to you, usually for a flat fee + shipping. When using a forwarder you still make the purchase yourself, and enter their address into the shipping field. When the box arrives at the forwarder they will then stick your address onto the package and send it on its way.
Some popular forwarders are:
Be sure to read each sites instructions on forwarding carefully!
C. Proxy Services: With a proxy, you tell them what the item you’re looking for is and they will purchase it in your stead. This is handy for when a company doesn’t accept foreign credit cards, or you’re having trouble navigating a Japanese website.
Some popular proxies are:
Again, be sure you thoroughly read through each sites proxy instructions.
7. I see a bunch of really cheap figures that ship from China on ebay. Are those okay to buy?
Generally, no. They’re most likely bootlegs. If you want a second opinion on that, feel free to ask in the Bootleg Megathread that’s always stickied at the top of the sub.
8. What’s a bootleg, and how can I avoid buying them?
A bootleg is a counterfeit figure often made using rejected molds of the official product. They are usually priced significantly lower than the genuine article, and in order to make their profit, bootleggers use lower quality materials and have less attention to detail- resulting in a substandard figure.
The Bootleg Megathread that I mentioned in question 7 is a great tool to avoid buying any bootlegs. It has a few tips and tricks to avoiding them to begin with, and a few more on how to spot them if you’re worried you might already own one.
9. Does anyone know when figure X is going to be released? How do I know if it was delayed?
My Figure Collection (sometimes referred to as MFC) does an excellent job of staying on top of information like release dates and delays. If you’re curious about an upcoming figures release date, check there first. This information can be found directly under the “Releases” section on a figure’s entry. If you only see a month and a year in that section, it means the release date has not yet been announced by the manufacturer, and there is still a chance the figure could be delayed.
If you make an account on MFC you can also subscribe to comments, changes, and pictures via a checkbox on the right hand side of a figure’s listing. Subscribing to any of these things will allow MFC to send you an email anytime the subscription in question updates. Subscribing to “changes” is a great way to keep up with release dates and delays, among other things.
10. The figure I want is long sold out at normal retailers! What’s the best place to pick it up in the aftermarket?
A list of reputable retailers can be found under the “Shops” section of the /AnimeFigures sidebar. They all sell legitimate products, and many of them also sell figures second hand. However, the most frequently suggested second hand sites are Mandarake and Amiami- who has a preowned section that they update every night save Sundays and Japanese holidays around 1PM JST and again around 6PM JST.
AmiAmi grades their pre-owned items on a letter scale. The general consensus from buyers is that their ratings are conservative, so unless the item and/or packaging is specifically indicated as having significant flaws, pre-owned items from them are usually in at least as good a condition as their rating suggests.
Note: When you search Mandarake, you’ll get the best results by using the Japanese characters for whatever you are searching. If you don’t know them, you can find them on MFC by clicking on any of the “details” in that figure’s listing.
11. Amiami has a figure I’m interested in labeled as “For sale in Japan only”. Does this mean I can’t order it without a proxy or forwarder?
No, you can still order it. Amiami’s English site has that warning on many items, and it’s mostly meant to inform you that this product was made for a Japanese market, and as such, will have Japanese speaking/writing in it- so don’t expect any instructions to be in English. If Amiami doesn’t want foreigners buying a certain product, they won’t even list it on their English site.

Displaying Your Figures

12. What display cases do you recommend?
If you live near an Ikea try out one of these:
  • Klingsbo
  • Billy (Often used with Morliden doors (now the HÖGBO and glass shelves.)
  • Detolf: Formerly the go-to choice for inexpensive display cabinetry, the Detolf was first made flimsier around 2020 and then essentially phased out of the name, to become the BLÅLIDEN. Knockoff versions of widely-varying quality are commonly found on other shopping sites these days, though.
*If you decided on a Detolf, you might find that there is a lot of wasted space. Here are a few tutorials on raising the shelves or and adding extra ones in.
If you don’t live near an Ikea, Amazon has a few display options, though they are more expensive. Also keep an eye on your local Craigslist (or your country’s equivalent) and stores near you that are closing up.
13. What lighting do you guys recommend?
Ikea’s Dioder LED strips were discontinued after a long run. A current version is the Vattensten, if you're inclined to buy your case and lights at the same time.
LED strips have become very commonly available in recent years; most hardware and home furnishing stores carry a selection now. Just make sure that the lights don’t get too hot!
14. What are those clear plastic boxes that I see under everyone’s figures in their collection posts, and where can I get them?
Those are called risers. Most of us use standard acrylic risers like these. Some other, easy to find things that have been suggested are:
Check your local hobby store for the first 2 options, or your local hardware store if you want to make your own.
Another common suggestion is to visit The Container Store if you have one near you. They have a lot of things to choose from that can suit a variety of needs. Be sure to check out their standard acrylic risers, their Amac boxes, and the various display cases they sell (baseball cases, mini car cases. hockey puck cases, etc).
15. Should I keep my figures sealed?
That is, of course, up to you really, but here are a few things to keep in mind when debating this question:
  • Keeping it sealed can actually damage your figure. PVC figures usually have something called plasticizer in them, and that plasticizer needs to be able to breath. If a PVC figure isn’t exposed to oxygen, after a period of time the plasticizer starts to break down and form a sticky substance on the surface of the figure. Simply opening your figures and taking them out of the box prevents this from happening. If you happen to find plasticizer goo on one of your figures, Kahotan has a handy guide for dealing with it.
  • Unlike some other figure markets, keeping an anime figure sealed won’t raise its value by a whole lot. In fact, because of the plasticizer problem mentioned above, your figure could actually be in better condition if you open it versus keeping it sealed.

Finding the Right Figure(s) for You

16. What are "scales" and "prizes"? What is the difference between them?
Those are classifications for figures based on a few factors.
  • "Prizes" are generally more simply produced figures which are intended to be given as prizes for playing arcade games. They are inexpensive and lack the detail of scale figures, though some prize figure lines have standouts which may approach lower-end scales in quality. That is uncommon and often depends on the individual figure.
  • "Scales" are called such because they are nominally designed to be proportional to the dimensions of the character which they are based on. They are generally of much better manufacture and materials than prize figures, allowing for more detail in painting, accessories, or complex poses.
  • "Trading" figures appear in gashapon machines or as blind boxes on shop counters, often as sets which include multiple characters. As suggested by the class name, the randomness encourages trading. They are usually very inexpensively-produced, though as with prizes, some series are better than others.
  • "Non-scale" encompasses a variety of other categories. It is often used to describe poseable figure lines such as figma and Nendoroids.
In recent years producers such as Good Smile Company attempted to further bridge the gap between prize quality and scales by introducing figure lines which are intended to be moderately-priced while retaining a higher level of detail than the typical prize figure, to varying levels of success.
17. There are so many figure companies! Who makes good figures?!
Obviously this is a very subjective question, but as a general starting point, here are a few well renowned figure companies:
  • Alter
  • Max Factory
  • Good Smile Company
  • Kotobukiya (usually hit or miss for people. Use your best judgement based off of the prototype)
  • Flare
  • Stronger
18. I really love “series X / character X”- how can I check if any figures were ever made for it?
My Figure Collection can be your best friend here. Simply do a search on the name of the series or character using the search bar located at the top right of the screen, and all associated figures pop up!
Alternatively, if you’re looking at a figure’s MFC entry, most of the text under the “Details” section can be clicked on and used to run a search.
19. How can I commission a custom figure?
None of the major figure companies (Alter, Kotobukiya, Good Smile Company, etc.) will take a commission for a single figure. This thread has a few websites in it that you can check out, or you can look into garage kits. Some kit painters would be willing to resculpt, frankenstein together, or otherwise modify kits for the right price.
If you're looking for help completing a garage kit, /brushforhire may be useful.

Keeping Up with New Announcements

20. How can I keep up with figure news (announcements, updates, etc.)?
Most people use a MFC combined with any or all of the following news sites:
Many figure companies are active on Twitter, so following them there is recommended for quicker news.
To use MFC for this I’ll quote question #9.
Most companies have one or more Twitter accounts. Some examples: Good Smile Company sales, Good Smile's USA branch, Max Factory, AmiAmi Hobby News.
21. Everyone’s excited about something called Wonfes….. what the heck is that?!
WonFes (short for Wonder Festival) is a biannual figure expo where many figure producers (both large and small) show off new sculpts and updates to figures already under way. Most companies save their most exciting announcements for WonFes, so we all look forward to the expo whenever it rolls around! Winter Wonder Festival is usually held in February, while Summer Wonder Festival is usually in July. The event has also spread to Shanghai, in the late spring.
22. One or two (or 15) figures were announced at WonFes that I’m really excited about! How can I keep track of their progress once the event is over?
MFC is always really quick about getting new WonFes announcements (or any others throughout the year, for that matter) listed in their database, so we suggest using that. To find a figure from the event you can search any number of things, including the name of the character or the name of the show. You can also use the tag search to search “WonderFestival 20xx_[season]” to see all items announced at that event.

2024.05.15 23:53 JellyfishAway5658 Cured After 22 Long Years - Success Story

Hi all. Long-time BB sufferer here, having suffered for over 22 years (since 2002 at the age of 16 or 17). I am now turning 39 years old this later year.
Like many on here, I have explored countless routes to investigate the cause of my BB to try and cure it. I thought it came from my nose (post-nasal drip), my gut (acid reflux), allergies, and dry mouth. In the end, it was none of these things. Here are some things I had done while trying to cure my BB, based on what I thought were the causes:
Around last year, I came across an ad on social media for Bristle, for testing of the oral microbiome. The company said something that was really critical to my journey: that 90% of halitosis cases stem from the mouth and the oral microbiome. Because we BB sufferers are always so good with our oral hygeine regimens, it's natural for us to assume the cause is something else apart from the mouth, which is why we tend to investigate sinuses, gut issues, and so on. However, more likely than not, in over 9 out of 10 cases, it has to do with an imbalance of bacteria in the mouth.
I took the test, and discovered that I had really high levels of two or three halitosis-causing bacteria, that reside in the gum line: Fusobacterium Nucleatum, Prevotella Intermedia, and Tannerella Forsythia. In addition to this analysis, the Bristle team offered a treatment plan and recommended that I use SmartMouth Clinical Strength mouthwash for 2 weeks, and afterwards, repopulating with oral probiotics for several months, to try and change my oral microbiome over time. I tried using the SmartMouth mouthwash, and it helped somewhat for sure, but only temporarily. I knew that it was doing something, and ended up going off the deep end: spending hundreds of dollars more on SmartMouth mouthwash over the course of several months, because I became dependent on it to mask my BB enough for me to go out of the house.
After some further investigation, I came across a different oral microbiome test that was based out of Canada, called OraVital. Similar to Bristle, OraVital does a microbiome test via saliva, and comes back with results (which in my case, matched the same bacteria I had discovered in the Bristle test). However, additionally, they offer a 3 week antibiotic treatment plan (amoxicillin/metronidazole mouthwash and gum ointment), followed by chlorhexidine mouthwash. This was much stronger than what Bristle offered. I did the treatment, and it helped enormously when I was on it. However, sadly, the BB returned when I completed the antibiotic solutions. I was sad and defeated once again.
Next, I came across a third oral microbiome test, by a company called Viome, called the Oral Intelligence Test. This test does the saliva sample, but doesn't give you a list of the bacteria they find. However, they give you an oral probiotic lozenge that is supposed to be custom for you. I noticed the strength of the oral probiotic lozenge to be 30 billion CFU. This was a clue for me, because other probiotic lozenges that I came across online were only in the range of 3-6 billion CFU. The fact that this was 30 billion meant that more probiotic bacteria were needed to combat the problem.
I ended up taking the Viome oral probiotic lozenges for some time, but experienced only modest results. However, they did help somewhat with my morning breath when taken before bed. But the BB always came back.
Over the course of time, it dawned on me. This problem is more severe. It requires more effort to remove the bad bacteria, and more effort/strength to repopulate with good probiotic bacteria.
It was then that I had a revelation that made all the difference. Instead of relying on oral probiotic lozenges, with their relatively minimal strength, why not use extremely high doses? I resorted to trying probiotic powder instead of lozenges. The dosages in some of these powders was over 100 billion CFU per scoop.
The Bristle test indicated that the bad bacteria I have were sensitive to reuterin, which is produced by the probiotic L. Reuteri. I came across L. Reuteri powder on Amazon. Additionally, I came across L. Salivarius powder as well, which a probiotic that produces a compound called saliviricin that kills bad bacteria as well.
I began taking these two powders in the mouth, mixed with a bit of water (only a little bit, so that they do not get diluted). I also use water because I feel like this helps the probiotics swish through the gum lines, which is where my bad bacteria resides. Within 1 week of doing this, multiple times a day, I noticed a massive improvement. I knew I was onto something, and something big. I continued to do this for a couple of weeks, and noticed my breath getting better and better over time. However, it was not completely eliminated. I figured it would just need to be something that I would use before I went out. However, I noticed the improvement to be getting progressively better after 3 weeks, and then 4.
One thing to note here is that, for the probiotic bacteria to have optimal effect, you need to clean your mouth and tongue before using them. I read in a scientific study that they found probiotics had a significantly higher benefit when used after tongue scraping/brushing. I use both a tongue brush and then a tongue scraper, before I do the probiotic rinse. I also do not eat or drink water for at least 30 min after rinsing.
Within weeks of doing this, I noticed the bad taste in my mouth was gone, when I tried to search for it. My perceived 'dry mouth' was gone, and my saliva flow had increased significantly. I always thought I had dry mouth, but I came across scientific articles online which suggested that the bad bacteria is what was actually causing that feeling. Bad bacteria change the pH of your mouth and cause that taste and feeling of dryness. They reduce salivary flow.
I was encouraged by the results, and I then started doing additional research. There were other healthy probiotic strains out there that were good for the oral microbiome and for combatting bad bacteria. One that I came across was Weissella Cibaria. This bacteria is naturally found in the mouth, and can colonize it. L. Reuteri and L. Salivarius, on the other hand, are just passing through the mouth and do not stay there. Therefore, they can help the oral microbiome by killing bad bacteria, but do not have a permanent residence there. If you don't have a solid presence of good bacteria in the mouth, the bad bacteria that is wiped out can grow back. This is what happens when we use antibiotics. Sure, they're able to kill off bad bacteria, but even the small remnants can multiply back rapidly if there are not enough good bacteria to outcompete it. To get Weissella Cibaria, I found an oral probiotic lozenge that has a patented form called OraCMU:
Additionally, Weissella Cibaria is also present in probiotic foods like Sauerkraut and Kimchi, but UNPASTEURIZED only (pasteurizing kills all beneficial bacteria). I switched my diet to high in soluble fiber and fermented foods on a DAILY basis. This includes apples, celery, carrots, sauerkraut, kimchi, and yogurt. I eat a big bowl of some of these foods mixed up, at least once a day, for lunch. I also incorporated fiber gummies to ensure I am getting the adequate amount of fiber the probiotics need to grow in the oral microbiome (they need a type of fiber called fructooligosaccharides to prosper and grow).
I have gotten really big into fermented foods. I am constantly on the hunt for fermented foods and will try to have them whenever and wherever I can, as much as I can. They're not the most appetizing, and can smell pretty bad, but they are working to permanently shift my oral microbiome over time. I even got a yogurt maker off Amazon and began making my OWN L. Reuteri yogurt using a starter culture, half and half, and fiber powder (inulin). This will help create a lasting effect to permanently alter my oral microbiome to prevent bad bacteria from ever coming back.
The role of probiotics in curing oral imbalance cannot be understated. I have read multiple studies relating to probiotic research regularly, which has only begun exploding in the scientific industry in recent years. This is a really exciting time. After years of very limited progress on fixing halitosis, it seems that probiotics is the solution to combating the issue. One thing to note is that it takes time to rearrange your oral microbiome. It didn't get this way overnight. Getting out of it is the same.
In addition to populating the mouth with good bacteria, it is EQUALLY important to keep up with a regimen to clear the mouth of the bad bacteria, which must be done regularly and in parallel with the probiotic regimen. Every morning and night, I do the following routine:
Also want to emphasize the absolute importance of going to the dentist for cleanings as many times as your insurance covers. For decades, I did not visit the dentist, going years on end without cleanings. These treatments are essential for breaking up biofilms and plaques of all the colonies of bad bacteria. If untreated over time, they become more resilient and grow rapidly. They build protective shells around their communities which allow them to grow rampant and overpower the good bacteria of the oral microbiome. It is critical to go, and have the calculus and plaque disrupted and removed. Even if you don't experience relief from one or two cleanings, it needs to be done. It is the progressive effect over time that will cure the condition. Removing bad bacteria overtime while populating with good bacteria -- a one-two punch.
And that's about it. That's where I'm at now, and I will continue doing this routine for the coming year, because I have seen in the past how resilient this bad bacteria is. My goal is to continue hammering it down with probiotics, and not just to wipe it to oblivion, but to build a healthy diverse microbiome of good bacteria that will prevent it from ever growing back and out of control again. I still experience halitophobia - the fear of bad breath and reactions - even though I don't experience any. My mouth is moist and sweet. My saliva is flowing. But the fear of a reaction is a psychological condition, because it is what I've known for 20+ years. I hope to be able to shake it off over time through many positive interactions.
Good luck to all and God Speed!

2024.05.15 23:21 DirectorNecessary538 Starting Up vs. Buying Out: Sylvie Froger, An Entrepreneur Who’s Done Both, Shares Her experience

Sylvie Froger wanted to escape the corporate world, and she did it by solving a problem she experienced when she had to relocate for work more than a decade ago. After surviving the "nightmare" of moving to London, Sylvie created a stress-free solution to help people do the same. That's how Simply London, her first business, was born.
"I got fed up with the corporate world and wanted to do my own thing. That was 12 years ago, I built this from scratch, and it's still going." But she didn't stop there.
"I started to think about a pre-retirement plan which involved having more than one source of revenue. I needed an additional source of income and I've always liked the creation of businesses.
"It's exaggerated, but I love learning, I love new things, and I love tech, so all of this combined led me to think: well, maybe I could actually acquire an online business that I can work on in my spare time."
In this interview, Sylvie shares the lessons she learned from buying an existing tech business, the issues she encountered, what she would've done differently, and how Boopos helped her. If you want to buy or sell a business, here's a lot of wisdom worth reading!

How Boopos helped Sylvie gain confidence and finance her acquisition

Sylvie learned about Boopos through podcasts that discussed the topic of flipping businesses.
"Boopos made it possible for me to think that I could finance it because I wasn't sitting on a pile of cash, so I needed external financing. I wouldn't have known how to raise funds or things like that; that's not how I built my first business; I built it from scratch without raising any funds.
"So Boopos gave me the confidence, a little bit of security as well with the pre-approved businesses." Although Sylvie recognizes this is not a guarantee, it is helpful to know that the business has no major problems.
"I also came across the concept of seller financing which I used as well".
Sylvie acquired PowerImporter, a tool for easily updating Webflow websites from Airtable, CSV, and WordPress. "PowerImporter is about saving people time, and that's something I'm very passionate about. So the product also fitted my personal taste for the type of service or product I wanted to bring to people."

7 tips from Sylvie Froger

1. Write down the best & worst-case scenarios

"I think the biggest worry was that financially, I would struggle to repay all the debt I had to take to buy this business, knowing that I was sitting on no cash at all.
"What I did was lots of calculations: best-case scenarios and worst-case scenarios, and then I looked at: What happens if we're in the worst-case scenario? Can this be sustainable?"

2. Ask for documentation

One of the biggest challenges Sylvie faced was the lack of documentation. Although this hasn't given her business technical problems, it has made problem-solving slower.
"Everything had been developed by the seller, so it was all in his head. There was pretty much no documentation, technical, or actually any documentation on the business, so I had to extract information from his head by asking lots of questions. If I were to re-do it, I would request documentation as part of the buying process.”

3. Look for honesty in a seller

Her advice on what to look for in a seller comes down to honesty.
"(When) analyzing what might impact the business in the future negatively as of market trends, competitor products, changes in the tech world that could have an impact… I think that's really useful to get from the seller's perspective because they know their market, they know their product".

4. Choose a business that motivates you

Sylvie was able to combine both her passion and what made sense from a financial standpoint. But that's not always the case.
"The business model that I purchased came with quite a very high margin, so I did both. I'm guessing it's not always possible, it depends also in which sector you are.", she recognizes.
"If your motivation is financial then maybe you don't need to be in a business whose product or service you love. As close as you get to what you love, whatever that is. It could be just the money or it could be the challenge, type of product. Does that make sense? Yes? Go ahead!"

5. Follow your intuition

"I would say avoid something that your intuition tells you to avoid, I think intuition is still very important. Facts obviously are, but also intuition, and it could be intuition about the sellers, it could be intuition about the type of business you're not really sure about".

6. Don't underestimate the cost and time of development

Although Sylvie planned to hire a coding specialist, she did not expect the time and cost that it would take.
"As with development, that's my lesson: it takes three times the time and ten times the cost, so whatever plan you've made in developing in the technological world, it will often be underestimated.
"If you buy a business which exists already it's fantastic because a lot is set up already, so there's major benefits in doing that compared to building from scratch."

7. Find a community

Sylvie recognized that she would love to be part of a community. And especially, she hopes to connect with other women who might have similar experiences.
"Another challenge for me was and still is to be a woman in tech. I don't want to put everything onto gender differences, but I felt very self-conscious and I still do being a woman in the tech world.
I still find it daunting but it's interesting, so I would also love to be able to connect with other women in the tech world to see what they think about it."

Why buying a business is a good path to follow

"Building on something that has been done fairly well or very well is a pleasure, so you buy time, obviously, when you buy a business that exists already".
In her case, the seller wanted to continue developing products but he understood that this particular business needed to scale on marketing. "The major benefit for me was that not a lot had been done marketing-wise, so there was a lot of potential."

2024.05.15 23:19 Capable_Cockroach_19 Resources that I used as a CPE and EE major

Resources I used as a CPE and EE double major that helped a lot
Hello! I graduated last spring, but I wanted to share some resources for current students that either: - helped profoundly in my classes while taking them - taught me a lot and I wish I had them during my class
I’ll also share some of my thoughts on learning for these subjects that pulls away from just reading textbooks.
Anyways, here’s the list…
  1. “Code” by Charles Petzold. This is an incredible book that walks you through how a computer works from the very basics through solving problems with light switches to advanced computer architecture and software. I wasn’t a beginner when I read this, but it strongly reinforced my skills in the area.
  2. “A Student’s Guide to Maxwell’s Equations” by Daniel Fleisch. This is a short book that carefully walks through electromagnetic fields by explaining core equations step by step with lots of examples. It also includes several helpful problems with answers online on his website. Helped me get an A in my fields class and only took like 2-3 days to finish.
  3. “A Common-Sense Guide to Data Structures and Algorithms” by Jay Wengrow. It walks you through DSA in a simple way with easy problems (including coding) including solutions in the back of the book. Currently going through it and it’s a very enjoyable read.
  4. Professor Leonard’s video series on differential equations. It’s completely free on YouTube and it teaches you differential equations from the ground up with easy to follow videos that include examples he gives you time to solve first and then walks through step by step. Again, it’s literally free!
  5. Ben Eater’s build your own 6502 based computer series. This video series on YouTube shows you how to build an 8-bit computer from complete scratch using computer chips you connect on a breadboard. Teaches you circuits, digital logic, low level coding, and how computers work all in one. You can buy a cheap kit from him to do it yourself along to the videos. I put it on my resume since I led a club teaching others how to do it and I’m pretty sure it’s a big reason I got so many job offers.
So if you’ve noticed a pattern here, it’s that the resources are easy to read and are engaging with problems you can do (very critical) along with actual solutions to check your work or get unstuck. They’re all cheap (or free) and you can probably get all of these for free online. Personally, I found traditional textbooks hard to be consistent with and overpriced.
Best of luck in your studies everyone, I hope this helps!

2024.05.15 23:18 Wutsalane Want to get back into mtg, specifically commander, where to start?

So I used to play a ton of mtg as a teenager, I played draft, casual homebrew, and a touch of modern and legacy, but my favourite format was always EDH, I played mostly casual with friends, but also played in some competitive games at my LGS but i never did super well, I stopped playing around 2016-2017 when I started going down a pretty bad path in life, but I’ve been getting myself cleaned up, and I’m applying to go to school for computer programming.
Since I’ve gotten cleaned up I don’t really do much but play videogames and work, I don’t talk to many people anymore, and had to cut off a lot of people because they were making it hard to get out of the scene I was in, so now im trying to find more ways to make friends as a young adult outside of bars and social media, and also find better habits and hobbies to help keep my nose clean, and commander seems like exactly the thing I’m looking for.
I remember the way I originally got into EDH was buying a mono black zombie themed pre con and making modifications to it untill it was basically completely different, unfortunately, most of my collection was lost, or sold, so I gotta start fresh, but idk if I should buy another precon and modify it from there or if I should just use online resources to try and build my own.
What would you guys recommend? And if I go for a pre con, which should I go for? I don’t mind dropping a bit of extra cash on an older one if there’s any really good ones that have cards that would just be useful or good to have in general. Or if I should build my own, how should I go about building it, I’ve seen people say to pick the 99 before the commander so you can decide your strategy first, but what strategies are possible? Should I decide what colours I want to play first? Should I play mono? Dual? Tri colour? 5 colour slivers? I know these are vague questions that are extremely personal but I’m interested in hearing your personal opinions on what would be best for someone coming back to the format after an 8 year gap

2024.05.15 23:18 Zealousideal-Bit3650 I’m lost in the fork in the road.

Hello, my name is Zach I’m a 23 year old (m). I’ve been living with my aunt and uncle for the last 8 months I graduated college this last December but never could find a job. My aunt and uncle live in a 26” pull behind trailer traveling the country and I sleep on their couch. I was given up on a job than we decided to call up a friend at the koa in the mountains. The koa has been a great working experience aswell as helping keep my mind off bad things in other places. I’m thinking of doing the work camping idea full time, but I don’t know how confident I am getting a camper. I would love to have my own place, I kinda need it after this period on the couch. I just don’t know how reasonable it is to commit to the camper lifestyle so young I’ve heard awful things can happen aswell as upkeep is expensive. I don’t really want to travel and work at different koas I would prefer to either find a Koa for yearly or just give up the camper idea (none of my family owns land). The apartment idea seems like it could be safer but when looking at rates it’s insane to think about living for one year roughly it’s basically the camper if the camper has nothing break down. So my question for you Reddit experience and non what would you do in this situation? I should have roughly 13k by October but don’t want to waste it or trap myself.
My mom wants to move in with me either way and she would like to live near a beach like 100 miles etc and I’ve heard humidity is awful on campers and idk if that makes the apartment option more affordable or not.
Any responses will help and I will be updating and responding.
Edit; my bachelors is in psychology I have experience with team building, recruiting, and hr practices. I was hoping to turn it into a job at a casino etc in hr than go back for my masters in mental health/social worker. I’ve always wanted to help people I think that’s why I enjoy the koa.
Edit: I’m not a big handyman Im a really fast learner and have used most tools so I was expecting to youtube most of my issues and cross reference with other campers and people online. If y’all think this is a bad idea let me know

Luxury vacation rental businesses offer an enticing opportunity for entrepreneurs across various states to tap into the high-end hospitality market. In an economy where experiences are increasingly valued, providing upscale vacation accommodations can be a lucrative venture. Whether nestled in the mountains, overlooking the ocean, or nestled in the heart of a vibrant city, luxury vacation rentals cater to travelers seeking a premium experience that goes beyond the ordinary.
Here's an expanded guide on how business owners can run a profitable luxury rental vacation business:
  1. Location Selection: The cornerstone of a successful luxury vacation rental business is choosing the right location. Each state boasts its own unique attractions and landscapes, offering entrepreneurs a diverse array of possibilities. From coastal retreats to urban oases, the key is to identify destinations that resonate with your target clientele. Consider factors such as accessibility, nearby attractions, and the overall ambiance of the area.
  2. Legal Compliance: Before diving into the vacation rental business, it's essential to understand the legal and regulatory landscape in your chosen state. Regulations governing vacation rentals can vary significantly from one location to another, covering aspects such as zoning, permits, and taxation. Staying informed and compliant with local laws is paramount to avoid potential pitfalls down the road.
  3. Property Investment: Investing in properties that exude luxury and charm is crucial for attracting discerning travelers. Whether it's a sprawling estate, a chic urban loft, or a secluded cabin in the woods, the key is to offer accommodations that exceed expectations. Pay attention to details such as architecture, interior design, and amenities to create an unforgettable experience for guests.
  4. Professional Management: Managing a luxury vacation rental business demands time, expertise, and attention to detail. Hiring a professional property management company can alleviate much of the workload, allowing you to focus on other aspects of your business. These professionals handle everything from guest bookings and property maintenance to concierge services, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for guests.
  5. Marketing Strategy: Effective marketing is essential for attracting high-end travelers to your luxury vacation rentals. Develop a comprehensive marketing strategy that encompasses both online and offline channels. Utilize social media, search engine optimization (SEO), and targeted advertising to reach your target audience. Additionally, consider partnering with luxury travel agencies and influencers to expand your reach and credibility.
  6. Guest Experience: The hallmark of a luxury vacation rental business is delivering an exceptional guest experience. Pay attention to every detail, from the moment guests inquire about booking to their departure. Offer personalized services, such as welcome amenities, private chefs, and exclusive experiences, to create memorable moments that keep guests coming back for more.
  7. Pricing Strategy: Determining the right pricing strategy is essential for maximizing revenue while remaining competitive in the market. Consider factors such as seasonality, demand fluctuations, and local events when setting your rates. Dynamic pricing tools can help you adjust prices in real-time to capitalize on market trends and optimize occupancy rates.
  8. Online Presence and Reviews: Maintaining a strong online presence is crucial for attracting potential guests and building trust. Invest in professional photography and create engaging content that showcases the unique features of your properties. Encourage satisfied guests to leave positive reviews on platforms such as TripAdvisor, Airbnb, and Google, as these can significantly impact your reputation and visibility.
  9. Stay Updated with Trends: The luxury travel industry is constantly evolving, with new trends and preferences emerging regularly. Stay abreast of the latest developments in luxury travel, such as eco-friendly accommodations, wellness amenities, and experiential travel offerings. By adapting to these trends, you can ensure that your luxury vacation rentals remain relevant and appealing to discerning travelers.

2024.05.15 22:27 galaro Miscellaneous simple questions about building informational websites

A friend of my friend wants to build an informational website for his business, just for online presence, no money transactions needed.
I've some core PHP and basic HTML, JavaScript, CSS experience and i know basics of hosting and domain names but this work seems too simple that I just recommend him some website builder something like wix.com to do on his own and that's the end of my talk with him?
I haven't used such website builders but i guess these platforms must have some recurring fee on top of fee for domain name and hosting they would be providing. So if he (friend's friend) wants to save some money then i download a template (or use wordpress.org), add content (his business info) to it, and upload it to any hosting provider that comes on top of Google search results? That leads me to the next question that i don't know SEO so anything i should know when choosing a template or a website builder?
For domain name i'm aware of tld-list.com and tldes.com
He may like an official email address on the domain name. I remember setting up an email address for my own domain name i had on namecheap.com but it was long time back so i may be wrong in remembering that i was only able to receive emails on that, not able to send emails from that. I guess the email needs to be set up at the hosting provider. I think it would be nice if he can send official domain emails via his Gmail, will i be able to do that without paying for Google's paid service?
In me finding this as simple as building a PowerPoint presentation i fear that being an outsider am i missing something? Thank you.

2024.05.15 22:20 No_Coconut_2099 Strategies for Getting Your Music Heard and Get Featured

Getting your music featured on popular playlists such as Spotify, Apple Music, or Deezer can have a significant impact on artists. It can result in a surge in streams and revenue.
However, there's no quick fix or guaranteed method for achieving this. It's important to be cautious of pay-for-play schemes that promise instant results but could damage your reputation and lead to your music being removed.
Promotion is crucial after releasing your music. Without it, your tracks risk going unnoticed and accumulating digital dust. Genuine promotion begins with quality music and authentic engagement.
Tastemakers and playlist curators continue to wield influence in shaping playlists, and your genuine fans are your most valuable asset.
In this guide, you'll discover everything about approaching playlist curators, developing a solid promotional strategy, and maximizing your chances of getting your music heard.
Make Your Music Available on Streaming Platforms: The first step to getting your music noticed is to release it. While this may seem straightforward, many artists struggle with where to start. Fortunately, platforms like Bandcamp or SoundCloud make it easy for independent artists to distribute their music without the need for a record deal.
Cultivate Your Audience: Regardless of whether you're a fan of social media or not, having a strong online presence is essential. Choose a few social media platforms that you can manage effectively, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, SoundCloud, or Bandcamp. Additionally, invest in creating a compelling artist website and bio. Encourage your friends to follow your Facebook fan page and ensure that all your social media profiles are interconnected. Consistently update these platforms with engaging content that reflects your story and creative process, but refrain from excessive self-promotion. Treat your fans like close friends by sharing content that you genuinely believe they would enjoy, while avoiding overwhelming them with constant self-promotion.
Curate Your Own Playlists: Dip your toes into playlisting by creating your own playlists. This not only showcases your taste as an artist but also helps to build your narrative. Consider creating thematic or genre-specific playlists that feature your own songs alongside tracks from other artists that complement your style.
Submit Your Unreleased Music: Platforms like sharetopros.com offer direct playlist submission to curators, allowing you to showcase your unreleased tracks. Provide detailed information about your music, including genre, subgenre, and mood. Once your playlist is live, promote it on social media and engage with other artists whose music you've included.
Reach Out to Playlist Curators: Approaching playlist editors is all about timing and targeting the right audience. Utilize platforms like sharetopros.com to submit your music to a diverse range of playlists. While landing a spot on a high-traffic playlist can significantly boost your visibility, remember that genuine connections and community engagement are equally important.
Success in the music industry requires hard work, patience, and perseverance. While there's no foolproof formula for success, consistently creating quality music and fostering meaningful connections within the music community can increase your chances of long-term success.

2024.05.15 22:13 Last_Development_656 What's your take on artists managing their fan relationships directly instead of relying on third-party platforms?

To build a sustainable music career, it's crucial to directly own your fan relationships, avoiding reliance on third-party platforms. In today's digital age, artists have numerous opportunities to connect with fans and build a dedicated following. Understanding the dynamics of the artist-fan relationship is essential. Authenticity is key, and social media is a powerful tool for connecting with your audience.
Here’s how to ensure fans can find you across various platforms:
Live Performances There's nothing like the energy of a live concert. Watching an artist perform passionately for a crowd creates a memorable experience that often leads me to search for their music online. If you love performing, seize every opportunity—open mics, breweries, house concerts, and more. Treat every performance as if it’s your last shot at a music career.
Spotify Algorithmic Playlists Spotify’s algorithmic playlists, such as Discover Weekly and Daily Mixes, are great for music discovery. While they’re not perfect, I’ve found many new artists this way. Getting your music on curated playlists can help trigger Spotify’s algorithm to promote your tracks further. Currently, 30% of my streams come from Spotify’s algorithmic playlists, which is second only to personal playlists and libraries at 52%.
Friends Word-of-mouth remains a powerful way to spread music. Often, it’s not even a direct recommendation—I discover new songs through what my friends play in the car or at gatherings. Encourage your audience to add your songs to their playlists. If your music resonates with them, they likely already have, but a gentle reminder can boost your reach.
Shows, Commercials, and Movies Sync licensing is a golden opportunity for discovery. Countless times, I've used Shazam to identify songs I hear in commercials, TV shows, or movies. If your song captures a viewer’s attention, you’ve gained a new fan. Sync placements not only provide significant payouts and royalties but are also an excellent way to get noticed by new listeners.
Coffee Shops This strategy works if your music fits the coffee shop ambiance. I've discovered numerous artists while at places like Starbucks. I suggest giving your artist name to the barista who manages the playlist. It’s hard to measure the direct impact, but it’s definitely worth a try!
By leveraging these diverse methods, you can significantly expand your reach and grow your fanbase across multiple platforms and environments.
Join sharetopros.com For music fans, SharePro is the top spot for original, high-quality music from artists worldwide. By purchasing music on SharePro, fans not only enjoy high-quality tunes but also directly support their favorite local artists and musicians, helping them pursue their dreams of making music. SharePro also provides artists with the opportunity to submit their music for consideration in TV and movie placements, as well as on music blogs and playlists. This opens up avenues for artists to expand their reach across various online platforms. If selected, just one song can expose an artist to tens of thousands of fans with a single submission. It offers a fantastic platform for artists to get discovered by fans and showcase their music to a wider audience.
Here's the kicker: one successful submission through SharePro can put your song in front of thousands of new fans. It's a surefire way to boost your exposure and grow your fanbase.
In conclusion, the bond between an artist and their fans is special, rooted in mutual admiration and shared passions. Fans aren't just consumers; they're dedicated supporters who deeply connect with an artist's creations. This connection is built on trust, making authenticity crucial in artist-fan interactions.
Authenticity sets artists apart in a world of manufactured personas. When artists stay true to themselves and their vision, fans are drawn in. They seek genuine connections and want to feel like they know the artist personally. Fans value authenticity because it allows them to connect with the artist's true self, making the artist's work even more meaningful.
