Miscellaneous Cactus Thoughts...
- Kudos to Kyra Parsi for not only nabbing the top spot with Failure to Match but having a second book in the top 20 with A Deal With the Bossy Devil. I personally was a fan of her debut romance In Love and War a few years ago so now I definitely need to pick up these other two!
- Ultimate GASP: This is the first month that Ruby Dixon did not have a book in the Top 20! She still grabbed the top author spot with 153 mentions (leaving second place Kleypas in the dust with a measly 139), but Ruby has never missed getting into the Top 20 books in the past year.
- RomanceBooks updates: the mod team said goodbye to a great teammate u/jaydee4219. We also are looking for input on Book Icks / Pet Peeves posts so please pop in and let us know your thoughts!
- In case you missed it this month: We saw the straightest underlining to ever exist, and what happens when romance authors play mad libs with tropes and settings. Also, I totally do this too, you aren't alone OP.
Hope y'all enjoyed this month's stats!

2024.04.09 12:14 CP4-Throwaway A rough estimate of celebs that may seem more BB, Cusp, or X from Famous Birthdays, based on the widest definition of my personal transitional BooXer/Baby Buster microgeneration, b. circa 1958-1967 (UPDATED)
Just for context, in this specific post:
BB = Baby Boomer
Cusp = Cusp
X = Gen X
This is a repost from the
original (which was an extension of the very original post
here) that I did a few years back, just to be updated for 2024 because I thought it'd be to fun to explore this again.
But I will exclude the 1965-1967 list because that'd be way too long. I'll add them in the comment sections. So in this post, I'll focus on the celebrities born from 1958-1964.
I know the vast majority of this sub will disagree but I'll post it anyway.
This is based on the vibes and/or appearance of the celebrity so please don't take this too seriously as this may or may not be accurate, depending on one's view of Boomers and Gen X. This is based on my current perception of these celebrities.
WARNING: THIS POST WILL BE SUPER LONG!!! DISCRETION ADVISED!!!!!!

2024.03.20 13:34 Pokestralian 2023 Aurealis Awards Shortlist announced
2023 Aurealis Awards Shortlists The Aurealis Awards were established in 1995 by Chimaera Publications, the publishers of Aurealis magazine, to recognise the achievements of Australian science fiction, fantasy and horror writers.
The Aurealis Awards are intended to complement the Annual Australian National Science Fiction Convention’s Ditmar Awards and the Australian Children’s Book Council Awards and the various other state-based and national literary awards. None of those awards distinguishes between the different categories of speculative fiction. We anticipate that the growing list of Aurealis Awards finalists and winners will increase the profile of Australian science fiction, fantasy, and horror, and provide an essential reading list for anyone interested in these genres.

2024.01.06 08:25 lifeinwentworth Hardest scenes to watch?
Zandra with Dr no-no is so hard on rewatch because you know what's going on and how it turns out.
Fenner assaulting Helen. Enough said.
Almost every time Nikki cries, it gets me. Also Fenner constantly baiting her. But that's personal cause she's a fave <3
Shel getting her baby taken off her. Especially this time around it really got to me because I watched the reunion video from a few years back where she says how hard that storyline was because she was actually pregnant at the time! So sad.
The lead up to Yvonne's end. Colin being a weak prat. And then her last scene doing that crossover with all the prisoners celebrating her escape :(
The scene with the little girl Natalie has bought in to smuggle drugs. Despicable woman.

2023.12.23 19:17 dwo0 Where to watch the shortlisted films
I complied a list of where audiences in the United States can find many of the shortlisted films for the 96th Academy Awards. Unfortunately, there were many films that I was unable to find, so, if you know where to find any of them
legally, please let me know in the comments. If you know where to find them in other countries, please comment as well to help others. I’ll probably be updating this list until the announcement of the nominations.
n.b.: Only ten categories release shortlists for their nominations. There probably will be films not listed here which may end up nominated.
As of 2024-01-22 in the United States.

2023.12.08 17:32 ScrutinEye Bad Girls (1999)
Anyone here a fan of this show? It seems to be conventional wisdom that it started out really well and gritty but got gradually worse and more cartoony, culminating in a terrible Series 8.
I rewatched recently and was a bit surprised at how wrong that opinion (and my own memory) was.
Yes, the show was at its best in Series 1, 2, and 3. It was at its grittiest and most realistic in the first series and gradually upped the camp factor (which had always been there a bit) with the most OTT storylines and characters coming in 4, 5, 6, and 7 (the low points being the bomb storyline and Snowball character, the mystery disease outbreak, and Christopher Biggins).
Series 8, to my surprise, was an attempt at a soft reset. It just ignored some of the campy loose ends left at the end of 7 and tried to return to the show’s roots a bit. Unfortunately, this meant mostly new characters, and by then people probably didn’t care anymore. The awful non-canon Christmas specials after 7 and 8 did’t help, but 8 was still a solid series of TV.
Some things I still found exceptional: Yvonne Atkins and her fate (one of the most haunting in any show I’ve ever seen); Shell Dockley; Fenner’s evilness (until it became cartoony); an early character’s tragic suicide; another early character’s surprise illness and death; Bodybag; Karen Betts; Helen Stewart (a terrible governor but a character who felt more realistic than most); Frances Myers.
Some things I really didn’t like this time around: Nikki and Helen (I remembered this as a really great relationship, but on rewatch found Nikki annoying, self-righteous, and stalkerish); the fire at Larkhall; Fenner’s end, when it finally came.
If you haven’t seen it, give it a go. If you have, it’s worth a rewatch!

Do you miss 2014? Do you miss the feeling of everything being soul-crushing while also nothing mattering? Or are you still in that ~era~? Either way, this rate is for you! After various rates with different match-ups, where 3!!! out of 4 artists have won (Oh No!/Froot, Ribs, Young and Beautiful) we are finally gathering them here all together to
give Halsey their deserved rate win see how they're all doing, 10-ish years later! So let's get down to business!
This rate has a hard due date of December 1st!
She got the life that she wanted,
but now all she does is cry
Produced by Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor, IICHLIWP is Halsey's big return to the concept album. Centered around their feelings surrounding the horrors and joys of pregnancy and childbirth. Halsey has explained that this was the album they were always meant to make from the very start; saying they originally didn't have the experience or confidence to nail an 'industrial pop ala Nine Inch Nails'-record yet. 7 years later, the product is
If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power - the album Halsey always wanted to make, but never believed they were cool enough to pull off.

Originally announced under the title White Hot Forever, Chemtrails Over The Country Club was Lana Del Rey's follow-up to the impossibly good Norman Fucking Rockwell. It was produced by Jack Antonoff and was released in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic,
a year after her Questions for the Culture-post. While not as versatile as NFR, it's still enchanting and folky with features from Weyes Blood, Zella Day and Nikki Lane.

Our second (and last!) album produced by Jack Antonoff in this rate, was another follow up to an almost insanely critically acclaimed album - Melodrama. After a 4 year hiatus, Lorde returned with a breezy and summery album about the challenges of fame, climate change, weed, heartbreak and her dog dying. Gone were the synths and bass from Melodrama. Solar Power goes in a completely different sonic direction of acoustic guitars, reverb and organic drums. It's a lighter album sonically, but still has the gravity in lyrics Lorde is known for.

Possibly the most obvious socially conscious album of the bunch, MARINA (without the Diamonds)'s Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land is a critique of misogyny, America, racism, homophobia, global warming, capitalism. The satire is still much in the vein as Electra Heart and The Family Jewels (although possibly a bit more heavy-handed), but the subject has expanded to something outside the lived experience of Marina herself. Sonically, this album is a mix of her pre-Froot music and what I can only call Eurovision-bait. Make of that what you will.

BONUS RATE
there is no bonus rate.
THE RULES that I totally didn't just copypaste from the EE EER
If you’ve done rates on here before, you’re probably already familiar with how this works. If you’re new to rates, PLEASE read the following!
- You must listen to and assign a score to EVERY song in the main rate, no exceptions. If your ballot is missing any scores, I will not accept it until you fix it.
- The bonus rate is optional, you can rate as many or as few songs as you’d like. However, even if you choose to not do the bonus rate, do NOT delete it from your ballot, as it will not be able to be read properly in the rate machine we use to process ballots.
- You may assign songs a score between 1 and 10, 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. You can also use decimal places if you wish, but only up to one point (ex. a 8.5 or a 6.9 is ok, but a 3.14 is not).
- You may give ONE song an 11 and ONE song a 0. Use these on your favorite and least favorite tracks, respectively. Reminder again that you CAN NOT give any of the bonus rate songs an 11 or a 0.
- DO NOT SABOTAGE! Obviously you can like some albums more than others, but purposefully giving albums incredibly low overall averages without justification may warrant your ballot getting rejected unless you explain your scores with comments. Speaking of...
- You are highly encouraged (though not required) to leave comments alongside your scores! To leave a comment, simply type a space after the score of a song and type to your heart’s content, like so:
New America: 10 tumblr anthem
- You can also leave a comment on an album by adding a colon next to it and writing your thoughts about it! Here is an example:
Album: Solar Power: Jack Antonoff has fucked up Pop Music
- These are the ONLY correct ways to leave comments. Any other format will break the rate program and I will be very sad. Please remember to format them properly!
- Use the pre-filled message found HERE to submit your scores. If the previous link does not work, you can use the backup pastebin HERE to fill out your scores and send to me, u/CarlieScion.
- If you want to change any scores you have after submitting, simply dm me and I'll change it for you!
- If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me on Reddit or on Discord in the #rates channel!

2023.10.25 10:56 lifeinwentworth Got Bad Girls; The Inside Story book today!
Thought I'd share some fun bits of character trivia that people may or may not know.
Nikki had an older married, brother who was a solicitor! He cut her off when her parents did when she was expelled from boarding school for 'lesbian activities'.
Nikki made the decision to not have her friends visit her in prison to make it easier to cope with the loss of freedom.
Denny's crime (I don't remember ever hearing this) was arson - she set fire to her children's home because she was being moved out and had fallen in love with the social worker in charge and didn't want to leave her.
Dominic sent the motorbike that Yvonne got him back to the dealership and donated the refund to the P.O's retirement fund.
The Julie's met when they were bartending when Julie J was already in prostitution.
Helen was raised by her widowed dad, a Presbyterian minister.
Stubberfield's appraisal of Helen is gross; "Apt to hysterical overreactions, poor judge of character...unwilling to benefit from others experience...chip on her shoulder... uses her position to promote 'politically correct feminist' politics', Ugh ugh ugh.
Meanwhile Fenner's appraisal is "exceptionally safe pair of hands...immensely popular...first rate in a crisis... calm influence... underestimates his own potential."
Some of the ages surprised me a bit too. So I'm curious if anyone wants to take a guess as youngest -> oldest with Nikki, Julie S, Julie J, Dominic, Helen, Karen, Fenner (I know some of them are obvious but a couple surprised me!)

2023.10.11 13:57 kittehgoesmeow What A Day: Hamas and Israel At War by Nick Turner & Crooked Media (10/10/23)
"I know a lot of them want to nominate me. I told them, ‘Please do not nominate me.’" - Kevin McCarthy, begging for one good night of sleep this year. Rising Terror
On Saturday, Hamas militants stormed into Israel and have killed 1,000 people so far—including over 250 at a music festival—taking others as hostages. In retaliation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) killed over 830 people in the Gaza Strip, and on Sunday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that his country was at war with “the enemy.” “We are at war. Not an ‘operation,’ not a ‘round,’ but at war,” he said, adding that “the enemy will pay an unprecedented price.”
- President Biden declared that “we must be clear: we stand with Israel.” A report in the Wall Street Journal suggesting that Hamas is being funded by Iran inspired Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to propose legislation to “expand the prohibition on state investment in Iranian businesses to include the financial, construction, manufacturing, textile, technology, mining, metals, shipping, shipbuilding, and port sectors.” Biden denied the report.
- The shocking brutality of the initial assault renewed anger against Hamas, as did the fact that most of the dead, Israeli and Palestinian, are civilians. Hamas has taken at least 150 hostages, most from the overnight rave targeted in the initial assault. One good bit of news on Tuesday was that 30 missing people were found safe in a Gaza border kibbutz after hiding out for three days. But the celebration has been tempered by other discoveries, among them that more than 40 babies had been murdered in one Israeli community.
- The U.S. will provide aid to Israel, but its ability to do so is somewhat complicated. Without a speaker, the House is unable to provide aid. Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX) has urged to make a deal even without a speaker, saying, “How does the Ayatollah look at this knowing that we cannot function properly? And I think it sends a terrible message.” This is presumably a reference to the Ayatollah of Iran, which, again, Biden has said isn’t involved, since the Palestinians don’t have an Ayatollah as such. But apparently, the speaker drama hasn’t stopped us. Speaking anonymously, one U.S. official said “We are surging support to Israel” and that “Planes have already taken off.”
People are losing it everywhere. Rallies held all over the U.S. have been called out for insensitivity and misinformation is running rampant. If you saw videos of the early conflict it’s likely you were lied to.
Unlike the conflict in Ukraine, this isn’t a clear-cut case of unilateral aggression, and it’s hard for sane people to be comfortable staking out opinionated positions. All we know so far is that many innocent people have died and the ongoing war will result in many more unspeakable tragedies.

Under The Radar
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has decided he no longer wants to lose to Biden in the Democratic primaries in the spring; now wants to lose to Biden in the general election in November instead. Mr. Cheryl Hines
is dropping his Democratic nomination bid and plans to run as an independent.
Polling has indicated that this move will take a bite out of Trump’s support among conservatives. And as hard as it is to believe,
Trump’s team has freaked out, and attempted to paint RFK Jr. as “a liberal parading in conservative’s clothing” and characterizing him as “just another radical, far-left democrat.” Yep, that’s RFK. He’s basically an antisemitic Bernie Sanders.
President Biden isn’t taking the threat of third-party candidates lightly, either. His team has made moves to spread oppo research about third-party candidates and limit their ballot access, or at least make it more costly for them to qualify. RFK Jr.’s sudden abandonment of the Democratic Party follows a change by Cornel West who eschewed a likely Green Party nomination in favor of an independent run. And this is just the beginning. The No Labels Party has a lot of money but no candidate yet. Also no platform. But you know they’re gonna jam at least one more dog in this race.
Oh, and RFK Jr’s super PAC raised nearly $15 million in the hours since his announcement, and he’s been courting the support of Elon Musk. He’s gonna be a problem for somebody, that’s for sure.
What Else?
The race to replace the speaker of the House officially started Monday with a closed-door meeting among top Republicans, and a new challenger has entered the race—KEVIN MCCARTHY. Was this all for nothing???
A man crashed his vehicle into the Chinese consulate in San Fransisco before being shot and killed by police. And we really mean “into.” The vehicle ended up in the lobby of the building, but no one was hurt.
The investigation into the mishandling of the classified documents by the President is possibly nearing its end. Not the President you’re probably picturing. This is about Joe Biden. He was interviewed as part of an independent investigation into his
handling of classified documents on Monday, a sign that the investigation is almost over.
The WGA strike officially ended yesterday as members voted 99% in favor of the new deal. The celebration has been dampened by the realization that for most of the guild’s 11,000 members, jobs will be even more scarce than before the strike.
A gas pipeline in The Baltic Sea was compromised over the weekend, with Finnish authorities concluding that sabotage was the most likely explanation, though didn’t specify who they suspected of carrying out the attack. Another Republican Presidential hopeful that you didn’t know was running gives up his bid for the seat. In terms of shaping this election, former Texas Rep. Will Hurd…will not be heard.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a bill that makes it easier for authorities to compel treatment for people with mental illness or addiction issues. The law expands the definition of “gravely disabled” to include those who cannot provide themselves with food or shelter because of untreated issues like mental health or drug abuse.
The man who vacated the seat that paved the way for George Santos to enter Congress, Tom Suozzi, is running to take back the seat. Suozzi left the House initially to launch a failed bid for Governor, and now he’s back to clean up his mess.
Speaking of George, Santos was charged with 23 crimes—adding ten new charges not included in his original indictment in May. Charges include stealing people’s identities and making charges on donor’s credit cards without their permission. There’s always a great news cycle waiting in the wings, folks.
Be Smarter
Lots of billionaires declare their intent to give away their money. But they almost never do it. Giving away some of your money, even if it’s billions, isn’t true philanthropy if your net worth still continues to grow. Do you hear that, Zuckerberg, Bezos, Gates, and Buffet?
Charles F. Feeney, who died on Monday, might have been one of our only philanthropists, at least in the truest sense of the term. After amassing a fortune of about $8 billion as a pioneer of duty-free shops, he vowed to give it all away before his death and actually did it. By 2022 he was down to his last 2 million dollars, earmarked to be split among his 5 children after his death.
Not only that, but he gave away most of his money anonymously. None of the 1,200 or so buildings that his donations have built bear his name. It’s hard to understand just how few people are actually willing to do this. Even Mackenzie Bezos, who has vowed to give away her billions, has only given away a third of her total net worth, which continues to grow every year. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet have vowed to give half of their money away (because everyone needs $60 billion or so just in case). But to be fair, it took Feeney over 35 years to give it all away, so there’s still time for the younger generation.
