We are here to discuss, appreciate and celebrate the drivers and teams part of the Formula 1 midfield, who maybe do not get the recognition and visibility they deserve. In 2024, during the testing week, F1.5 will celebrate and discuss the following teams: Alfa Romeo/Stake, AlphaTauri/VCARB, Alpine, Haas and Williams. As such, McLaren, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull, their drivers, positions and points will be disregarded from any session and event results in this subreddit.

2024.03.03 23:22 coloredpencilyoghurt Soft gender-neutral name that works in German & English

Hello everyone! I'm nonbinary and I've been struggling to find a gender-neutral name for a while now, so I figured I'd ask for some help. (Sorry if this post is too long!)
What I'm looking for: - The name MUST be unisex! The harder it is to tell if it belongs to a man or a woman based on just the name alone the better. If it has to lean towards one gender, I'd prefer it to be more masculine than feminine. - The name should be easy to pronounce in German (since I am and live in Germany) but also in English. - Currently I have no plans of legally changing my name, but you never know...therefore the name should be acceptable/professional enough to do that, and should also work with a German surname. - I don't care about meaning or popularity much...feel free to suggest unique names as long as they still fit the other criteria!
Examples of names I like: Florian, August, Laurence, Romeo, Winifred, Valentin, Wolfgang, Oskar, Leonardo - all of these are clearly gendered (at least here) so they're not usuable for me, but they serve as good reference for what style of name I like. I think soft, romantic, maybe old-fashioned describes it best?
So far I've only found two names that I would even consider using: 1. Jules - my birth name is one of the many names this can be a nickname of, so that's neat. Problem is that you can't really pronounce this in German and I think it sounds weird with a German surname (which again, is technically not a concern as of right now...but just in case). 2. Ariel - This is almost perfect, except that it doesn't feel right/I don't know if I like how it sounds. Also I think most people read this as feminine-leaning but I could be wrong (if you want to share your views on this please do so). Maybe I'm being way too picky and that's why I'm so frustrated with this whole name search, but oh well...I'm hoping that with this post I can get some more ideas, inspiration, opinions, literally anything! Thanks in advance :)

2022.04.27 00:48 Cheifwhat [For Sale] A bunch of 7" records (UK)

Hi all
I'm a bit new to this so forgive me, I tried to read the rules and stuff but I have attention issues.
In the noughties I bought a jukebox (Seeburg LCP1), it had a feature whereby it could play at 45 or 33 at the flick of a switch. Now I wasn't married and was earning good money so I went a bit ham and bought a load of records for it. I spent close to £3000 getting the jukebox up to spec and had it only a few month in fully working order before my work circumstances changed and I had to sell it. I kept the record though and have moved house about five times, since then, and the last three with my three kids and wife so not fun to do (especially as I also have a bunch more comics that weigh a ton!).
What this means that that the records, all 7", mostly 45s but some 33 too, have been sitting in boxes for over ten years. I have barely played them. I have graded them as best I can but I haven't listened to them all, just played the ones that looked like them might be scratched. I just looked a the grading system. The only 'mint' are a few spoken word records that are still factory sealed.
So We are finally in a position to buy a house after over a decade and i need the money more than the records. I put them all up on Discogs (barring a few box sets that I need to unearth) and I would rather sell them all in one go, buyer collects or I deliver to the UK only.
Look. Another thing. When I bought the jukebox, friends would use it as an excuse to offload all their crap 45s from back in the day. I have no idea why I have so much Kool and the Gang. I'm really not that big a fan beyond the song Summer Madness. I have a couple of versions of records that arent on Discogs and one that just isn't on there at all (or even on the web at all (spoken word thing called 'power through your mind' by Dr J.L. Payne - look like it was a very self funded promotion for a book that also is nowhere to be found on the internet. The dude is listed as being from Greenville Mississippi on the back of the sleeve)

I have an exported excel file from Discogs I can (I hope) send to anyone interested.
The value on Discogs is Min £2,090.53 Med £4,214.45 Max £8,469.03
If I could split the difference between the minimum and med I'd be happy. £3500? is that reasonable? UK ONLY. I'm in Suffolk but can travel for fuel costs

2022.04.18 19:09 pfunest Books I'm selling

Only shipping to U.S. addresses.
Prices probably don't reflect market value so try not to hold it against me. The prices are just what I'm willing to part with them for. If you can find it cheaper, please do. However, everything is negotiable to a point and if you're wanting to take a bunch off my hands at once I'm certainly willing to talk discount.
I'm in the U.S. so I'll be using Media Mail to ship. I won't charge for packaging because I have options available, but I do expect you to pay shipping. According to the USPS prices are by package weight (in lbs): $3.19 for the first lb, add $0.63 for each additional lb. When you pick what you want, I'll weigh them with packaging and give you the total.
Just PM me if you have any questions. I'll try to keep the list up-to-date. More will be added in the future. I also plan on listing some books I'd be interested in for trades.

2018.09.05 01:40 bebebey [Collector] Sharing my newborn daughter's name AND my giant collection of name options!

Hello namenerds fam! I had our second daughter last week, and I wanted to share our two daughters' final names (which we agonized over... in a fun way)!

Since the baby making factory is 100% closed for business, I also wanted to present our full collection of names that we were considering for both of them! Some of the names weren't real options, but I had to add them to my collection because they interested me. I kept collecting boys names even after we found out we were having two girls. I'll probably keep collecting for fun!

Hope you enjoy.

2016.04.28 18:49 thisdegeneraterobot Mr. D

Mr. D
Ralph Drayden crossed the quadrangle just as the sun began to peek over the old, union high school building. Dew sparkled on the brown leather of his shoes. He noticed it, and smiled. From the enamel mug in his hand, he took two great swigs of coffee. It tasted fresh, and he knew that it was: his wife was very diligent about brewing a pot just before he went out the door. Winifred, her name was. An old name, he thought, but a good one. Yes. His Winnie. She stayed home to take care of their… Well, he couldn’t think of what it was, but it didn’t matter. It was a brand new day.
“Hey, Mr. D!” Two young men ran across the grass toward him. They were sixteen, each of them, sophomores about to be juniors. He was expecting them: they’d been suffering from a semester-long malaise until he had spoken with their football coach. Coach’s threats to bench them if they didn’t pick those grades up had produced a couple of stirling essays. Ralph prepared his best look of stern disappointment. A little fun, in the morning.
“Now, boys. I suspect you’re here to ask about your papers. Yes, I bet you’re dying to know how you did. Well, I can tell you, I’m not pleased…” He let the significance of his words fall in the silence.
RALPH.
“Don’t you call me by my name!” He snapped. The boys looked frightened, surprised. Ralph Drayden shook his head. “Sorry, sorry. Hearing things this morning! Oh, boys. I meant to make a joke. You both did very well. Very fine work, indeed. A’s for each of you!”
“Really!? You mean it? That means we get to play in Thursday night’s big game!”
Drayden smiled. “Yes! I think the real reward, here, is that you believed in yourselves, and you succeeded!”
“Wow, Mr. D! You’re the best. You gotta come to our game!” Said one of the boys.
“Oh, yeah! Mr. D., I can’t tell ya how swell that would be!”
“You got it, boys. But only if I can bring my best girl.”
They looked puzzled. “Aren’t you married, Mr. D?”
Drayden screwed his face in mock horror. Then, little by little, he let a smile through.
“Just another little joke!”
“You’re such a cut-up, Mr. D!” The boys ran off to meet their friends. Ralph took another, satisfied sip of his coffee. It tasted sweet, and burned in his mouth. Like bourbon. Ralph eyed his mug, but there was nothing but black coffee to be seen. He shrugged. He made his way to his classroom.
In front of the door, painted to capture a house by a lake, stood Maple Thurgood, her blonde locks swaying. She smiled like honey on toast, and Ralph already knew that she would say yes. Whatever she wanted, he would say yes.
A figure the color of a fresh bruise skittered through the corner of his vision. Ralph froze, ice in his belly. He looked to the right. Nothing but empty hallway there. He shook his head for the second time that morning.
“You okay, Mr. D?”
“Must have skipped breakfast! What can I do for you, Maple?”
“Well, the girls on Varsity Cheer and I were thinking we’d throw a carnival to raise money for this year’s Cheer Off. But… well… Oh, I’m nervous!” She looked away, embarrassed.
“Nothing to be nervous about, Maple.” He unlocked the door and motioned her inside the room. He flipped the lights as she walked to her seat toward the front of the room and flounced pertly into it. “Go ahead and ask.”
Lights flickered across his eyes, bright lights that burned and made him blink. He put a hand over his face. As quickly as they had come, the lights were gone.
Maple hadn’t noticed. “Well, it’s like this, Mr. D. Everyone says you’re the greatest, and we were thinking it would be just neato-keen if you wanted to, well, you know, kind dress up like a clown for this carnival. Maybe fall in the dunk tank?”
Ralph affected a look of deep thought. He rubbed his jaw, crossed his arms. “Well, Maple. That’s quite a lot to ask of a respectable man like me,” he said. “Why, I’d risk being called a clown for the rest of my days here.”
The first faint glimmer of tears appeared in Maple’s denim eyes. She said, faintly, “I told the other girls it was a bad idea. I told them.”
NO MORE, RALPH.
“No!” Maple nearly leapt out of her desk. “I mean, don’t jump to conclusions, Maple. While I might be a man who deserves the respect of his students, I’m also the kind of man who can kid around. They used to call me Ham-and-Eggs, in the Service, because of my penchant for jokes. That was before I went to university, of course.”
“So you’ll really do it!?”
Ralph nodded.
“Oh, thank you, Mr. D!” This time, Maple Thurgood really did leap from her seat. She encircled Drayden’s neck and planted a chaste kiss on his cheek. Ralph patted her on the back.
As she was walking into the hall, Maple stopped. “Hey, Mr. D.?”
“Yes?”
“What’s this picture on your door from?”
Drayden considered this. “You know? I can’t seem to remember.”
Going about the business of setting up class for the day, Ralph considered what he’d paint his face to look like for the carnival. He thought he’d start with the traditional white pancake, and add some red lipstick. From there, he contemplated a few shapes on his cheeks, or some teardrops. He’d seen a clown or two, in his day, when he was in France, during the war. Or was it England? Nevermind. He could always go for something less traditional, maybe an open wound on his forehead. An infected chancre under his eye, rich with pus. Bits of tooth poking through his lips.
Yes, it would be a good time, he knew. For all the effort and possible inconvenience, the kids would love it. They would adore him for it, he knew. He might even get a chance to knock a few back...
He caught himself. He was running out of time. The minutes were flying from him like sparks into the night air. There was red spreading across the front of his button-down shirt.
“Wait,” said Ralph aloud. “What… what does that mean, the minutes are flying…” He looked up. The bell was about to ring. He blew out a breath. That must have been what he was remembering. It was almost time for class. A man should never let himself be alone with his thoughts for too long, Ralph reminded himself. It could be dangerous.
Students began to file into the room, their books held to their chests. Here was Sandy Johnson, and Butch Cranston. Suzy Barnham, Lily Painter. He knew them all. Some of them he’d know from birth, having been their parent’s teacher. It was one of the pleasures of living in a small town like Ever… Bruns… like this. You really got to know the people around you. YOU MUST COME.
Ralph slammed a book onto his big oak desk. There was a collective gasp. He forced a smile. “Now that I have your attention, please retrieve your copies of Dubliners. We’ll begin today with-- what is it, Maybury?”
A young man with short brown hair pulled his hand down as if it had been stung. “Well, nothing, Mr. D. It’s just that, weren’t we reading Romeo and Juliet?” He held up a paperback copy of the play.
Ralph had seen this kind of trick from students trying to derail their teacher before. “I’m in no mood for your shenanigans, Maybury. I’m a very respectable man, and I won’t have you messing about in my classroom. Now, get out your copies of Dubliners, and we’ll hear nothing more about it.” He swept up his copy of the book and began to write on the blackboard. “James Joyce was an Irish writer concerned mainly with the lives of Irish people. He wrote a number of books, many of which are beyond the capacities of tenth graders, but he wrote a few good short stories, as well. Most of them are in this very book,” he held it aloft, so the students could see. The spine read The Scarlet Letter. “Oh.” He said to himself. “Must’ve picked up the wrong book. Anyway, you lot open to The Sisters. I’ll join you just as soon as I find my book.”
“But…”
Ralph Drayden looked up. Darla Pennington had spoken. She was mousey, her face delicate in the sunlight that shone through the leaves of the maple outside the classroom window. Her lip was trembling. “We don’t have that book, Mr. D.”
“What?” The impertinence was almost unbarable.
“It’s like Johnny said,” Butch decided to chime in. Of course he did. Butch was always looking to be defiant. Well, Raph Drayden would fix him. Cutting off his fingers would be a good start. While the others watched. Flaying the skin of each and peeling it back would be better. Butch would know the meaning of consequences yet. “We don’t have that book.”
“Now, you listen here--” Standing at the back of the room, here and then gone, was the bloated, purple figure he had seen scuttling across the hallway before. In the second that it was there, Butch recognized it’s tiny, perfect hands. It’s plump legs. It’s sweet, broken lips forever blue and cold.
He saw that the students knew something was wrong, and he was flooded with the certainty that Butch and Darla and Johnny Maybury were right. They did not have Dubliners. Neither, he realized, did he. A cold wind blew across his neck. He turned.
The words on the blackboard disappeared like smoke into the air. He felt the whole building tremble, as though it were sinking, and when he turned to check on his students, they were not there. The desks were gone. The light from the windows was gone. Ralph Drayden stood alone.
“It’s time to come away, Ralph.” Said a voice at the door. Ralph did not look. He would not look.
“I have some more time, I know it.” He said.
“You do not. I’m afraid that is the nature of these reprieves: they are short, thrilling and enriching as they may be.”
“But this is who I am. Who I was meant to be.”
“Perhaps, Ralph. But now, you are dead. You are dead on the side of the road where your car hit the embankment. Your son is dead, too. Though I suspect you knew that. I see he has been visiting you?”
Ralph began to weep, softly. “I didn’t mean…”
The figure in the doorway sighed. “Ralph, try to understand. I believe you. I have heard it, so many times before. You did not mean to get as drunk as you did, and you did not mean to hurt your child. I am not unsympathetic. I have offered you these fresh few moments to enjoy a life you might have had. A respite from the pain you will surely now suffer.”
Ralph looked up. The man in the doorway was fine-boned and pale. He wore a simple coat of black. His face seemed to be half in shadow, though there was no light anywhere that Ralph could see.
“You may avail yourself of one comfort, Mr. Drayden: I believe you have learned you lesson. You are a man who appreciates lessons, I think. Though, in the offing, I guess that it does not matter.”
“I don’t want to,” said Ralph.
“Ah, well. We so rarely have our choice, eh? Mr. Drayden. We so rarely get to have what we want. You wanted this, for instance. You died an uneducated drunk. After your illustrious, three month career in the Army came to an abrupt end. Time to go.”
The man held out a hand to Ralph, expectant. Ralph found that he could not wait, could not force his feet to stay where they were. He gave one last sob, and walked through the door.
“Good-bye, Mr. D!” Came a voice down the hallway. “We’ll see you next year!”
And with that, the darkness swallowed Ralph Drayden whole.
