In Triplicate #8 - The Beths - Future Me Hates Me / Jump Rope Gazers / Expert In A Dying Field (2018 - 2022)
While a large discography is not necessarily the indication of a great band or artist finding a musician who can release three watershed albums, either outputting high quality work or exploring similar themes and motifs within them is to me nothing short of an amazing feat. It’s an achievement that is worth taking a deep dive to dissect, contrast and compare different works during a time of seeming creative wellspring. “In Triplicate” will be a bi-weekly spotlight on what I feel are artist at their peak by releasing three killer albums in a row chronologically and making observations on the world of music, their creative mindset and how these albums interlink, or pull apart, from each other.

Sometimes a band is just really fucking good. We all love a band that has a stake in The Narrative, but sometimes a great band is more self-contained. They aren’t great because they tell us something about how the world works, they’re great because they make great songs. On an unrelated note, meet indieheads favorite The Beths. The New Zealand based four-piece formed in 2014 and has since released 3 studio records: 2018’s Future Me Hates Me, 2020’s Jump Rope Gazers and 2022’s Expert In a Dying Field. All three of these records rule. These records do not contain much experimentation. They do not contain a shocking amount of growth. They do not contain messages that will change the way you view the world. They do not contain songs that changed The Narrative. What they do contain is 32 perfect or near-perfect songs, countless brilliant hooks, clever turns of phrase, fun harmonies and cool riffs. And while these records probably don’t contribute to The Narrative they do have A Narrative. I promise I’m not making this up. Let’s view the three Beths records not as three records but instead as one triple LP concept record. Future Jump Rope Experts Hate Me. A power pop Tommy except without all the parts of Tommy that kind of suck. Sadly there’s no “Pinball Wizard” either but you can’t have everything.
Act I: Wondering If You Feel The Same
What does it mean that Future Me Hates Me is so beloved in this subreddit? When we redid our essentials last summer, this record was one of the 40 named to the 2010s essentials. It’s not seen that way, I think. Fellow online music nerds don’t even agree! I think it means that we are a broadly anxious bunch because this is an exceedingly anxious record. Or maybe it just means that Future Me Hates Me is a perfect batch of indie rock tunes for the indie rock subreddit. A bit of both maybe.
Future Me Hates Me is probably the tightest Beths record. It’s the shortest (by 14 seconds, but still) and maintains an up-tempo pace more than the other two. It’s a record whose entire tracklist probably could be singles. Or, as proven by a series of Fortnite YouTubers, a record whose entire tracklist could be background music for your Fortnite highlights video. I’m not kidding! Look it up, there’s a distinctly strange amount of these and they all rule. Opener “Great No One” reveals what the record will be about pretty quickly. Immediately catchy, harmony-laden indie rock. That’s it, that’s the bag of tricks. Sometimes it’ll be slow for a bit - “Less Than Thou,” “River Run” - but mostly, it’s this. And that’s good because this is fantastic. There is no type of music in the world I like more than hooky indie rock. And no one does it better. Every song has something truly special about it. “Great No One” has those layered “Yeah”s on the chorus, “Future Me Hates Me” has the little guitar thing over the riff in the intro and after the first chorus, “Uptown Girl” has the name of a much worse Billy Joel Song, “You Wouldn’t Like Me” gets quiet and then loud (genius maneuver), “Not Running” has its ridiculous forward momentum from the drums, “Little Death” has the brilliant final chorus, “Happy Unhappy” has the way frontwoman Liz Stokes sings the word particularly, “River Run” also gets quiet and then loud (still genius), “Whatever” has the super fun guitar solo and “Less Than Thou” has the entire like 45 seconds when the band comes back in on vocals. It’s a perfect indie pop album. Every song is brilliant. The only records that I think I can fairly compare it to are If You’re Feeling Sinister and Alvvays in terms of indie pop perfection. Just 10 brilliant songs.
Oh yeah, the narrative. This is the first act of 3 in the conceptual masterpiece Future Jump Rope Experts Hate Me. It’s a simple narrative. Our narrator falls in love despite her knowledge that it will probably end badly, it works for a bit and then it falls apart. Our narrator is anxious pretty much the entire time. Simple, but effective storytelling.
Future Me Hates Me is about the first part of that process. Our narrator tries, and ultimately fails to convince herself that she doesn’t have a crush. The evidence to the contrary is simply overwhelming. She may believe that love’s no good idea (at all!) but on “Happy Unhappy” her every moment is haunted by wondering if he feels the same. She can’t even remember to take out the bins! On “Little Death” her body begins to fail her, dying the titular little death every time he comes near. Even then though, she maintains that “I’ll never tell, you’ll never guess.” On “You Wouldn’t Like Me,” she even admits that it “feels so much like being in love,” all the while worrying that she’s too unlikeable for it to work out. But on “Future Me Hates Me,” she comes around: she wants to risk going through future heartbreak. Future her may hate her but there’s nothing she can really do about it. And in the best song on the record, “Not Running,” she confirms that she’s not running away. It’s almost a response to the previous song, “You Wouldn’t Like Me.” It’s finally a song of trust - tell the truth. I won’t run away.. It’s okay to tell the truth. She was wondering if he feels the same and it looks like he does. Enough dying little deaths, worrying about future me. It’s time to meet the Jump Rope Gazers.
Act II: I Wanna Give It My Best Try
There’s a tendency, I think, to say that Jump Rope Gazers is the weakest Beths record. It has the weakest reviews, it has the fewest shooters among us non-critics, it is broadly just not quite as beloved as the other two. A classic sophomore slump. But I think that Jump Rope Gazers is, at the very worst, only like a quarter-step behind the other two Beths records. It would be like calling Ichiro’s 2002 season a sophomore slump. Yes, it was a step down from his rookie year and he would go on to have even better seasons but the dude still hit .321, stole 30 bases and made the all-star team. And yes, Jump Rope Gazers is a slight decline from Future Me Hates Me but it still has “Just Shy of Sure” and “Jump Rope Gazers” on it, which is the indie rock equivalent of hitting at least .321.
What sets Jump Rope Gazers apart from Future Me Hates Me the most at first is that it’s slower. Future Me Hates Me takes until the 8th song to slow down even for a minute, while Jump Rope Gazers slows down by track 3. It will slow down again at track 5 and track 9. These songs tend to be slightly weaker, though the title track is an exception. But there are still absolutely bangers on here. Opener “I’m Not Getting Excited” has a slightly gnarlier guitar sound than anything on Future Me Hates Me. Side 2 opener “Out of Sight” moves forward with the same momentum and pace that drives the best of Future Me Hates Me. “Mars, The God of War” does a little quiet/loud thing which is always welcome. While I can attempt to sort these songs into piles (“the slow ones,” “the bangers” etc) I think at the end of the day this is just another batch of excellent Beths tunes. “Dying to Believe” is a brilliant pop song that pulls out pretty much every trick in the book. I’m sort of in awe of it. It has sick harmonies! A bass solo! It has a part where the guitars are gone and then they come back! It’s another song about nervously waiting for the world to crash down around you but it sounds like a ton of fun. It has a super fun music video, the best they’ve ever made. It’s a ridiculous pop song that pulls out every trick without feeling overstuffed. “Acrid” has this faraway backing vocal at 3:33 that always makes my day. “Don’t Go Away” is like half chorus, and it’s a good choice because the chorus rocks. It’s a trick they’ll use again, to even better use on “Knees Deep” later, on Expert In A Dying Field. And the slow songs do still work. The chorus of “Do You Want Me Now” is absolute gold. One of their best. While “You Are a Beam of Light” is probably the weakest song between all three records, it’s still fun. The final chorus with the full band harmony is excellent. The best of the album’s slower cuts is “Jump Rope Gazers.” “Jump Rope Gazers” was the first Beths song that I loved. It has what is still probably the best set of opening lines of the decade with “I’ve never been the dramatic type / But if I don’t see your face tonight / I, I guess I’ll be fine.” Incredible, every time. The guitars sound really nice. The chorus sounds really nice. The melody is really nice. This whole song is just really fucking nice. It might be the one song from this band that makes you go “I’d want to live in the feeling of this song forever.” It’s the song that got me to fall in love with The Beths, and for that it will always be one of my favorites. But it’s not quite as good as the closer “Just Shy of Sure,” the best song on the record. It’s a high bar, but I think this one might have the best chorus melody of the Beths career to date. It feels like it has the same forward momentum of an “Out of Sight” while still having the more laid-back warmth of a “Jump Rope Gazers.” One of their perfect songs. One of the best songs of the decade. At the end of the day, what Jump Rope Gazers sacrifices in terms of bangers I think it mostly makes up for with a slightly more varied palette that mostly works wonders. It’s still a batch of Beths songs, which is among the highest compliments I’m willing to give anything.
Folks, meet the Jump Rope Gazers. The Jump Rope Gazers of course, are our narrator and the object of her affection. It would seem that our narrator has finally won the day. She is in love, willing to admit it and it seems like he is too. Of course, this has not stopped the worrying. On “I’m Not Getting Excited” she keeps her grip on joy loose, bracing for the potential for everything to fall down around her. On “Dying to Believe,” she’s willing to hope that everything won’t fall down around her but she also spends the song apologizing. She struggles with communication, with trust in herself and in her partner. There are true, earnest moments of joy on Jump Rope Gazers. The title track is a love song with no reservations. She wonders how this could have happened, despite all the worrying from Future Me Hates Me. She offers that she’s willing to give it her best try. The rest of the record tugs back and forth in either direction. You don’t get a sense listening to it whether it will work out long-term or not. While there are songs like “Jump Rope Gazers,” there’s also songs like “Do You Want Me Now” or “Don’t Go Away.” “Do You Want Me Now” indicates that communication here is often difficult. And anytime you need to say “don’t go away” 24 times in one song, it seems like things might not be going perfectly. The penultimate “You Are a Beam of Light” details a stilted phone call with tears involved but our narrator is willing to “meet outside in five.” Maybe they can work through this. Let’s return to the closer “Just Shy of Sure” and its brilliant chorus. What are the actual words in it?
“Oh, my head is aching
But if I keep very still
I might be able
To make this work until
The end of the weekend
Weak, but I’ll pretend
That you still want me
I’m the one you adore
But I’m just shy of sure”
More worrying! Not great probably. Sounds like it’s maybe not the sturdiest relationship in the world. Still, I hope they can make this work. That they can get around the insecurities, the doubts, the communication. Pull it together. Give us a happy ending. What’s the first lyric of the next album, as a sneak peak of where the jump rope gazers are headed?
“Can we erase our history?”
Ah, shit.
Act III: Staring Into Nothing (Or, I Hate Past Me)
If we continue to operate under the assumption that The Beths are the Ichiro Suzuki of indie rock (and we should, to clarify) then I think Expert In A Dying Field might be their equivalent of his dazzling 2004 campaign. After all, just like Ichiro in ‘04 this has a staggering amount of hits. Even more than the already staggering amount of hits from their previous efforts! It helps that, unlike the 10 songs of their previous records this has 12 songs. They manage to more than keep up the quality. While this is their longest and lengthiest record, it’s hardly The White Album. Lead single “Silence Is Golden” is a bit louder than usual, “I Want To Listen” is a bit quieter and “2am” is a slow, sad closer but really this is another batch of Beths tunes. Which, again, hell yeah. Can never have enough Beths tunes going around. Let’s all hang out and watch The Beths do the indie rock equivalent of hitting .372 and breaking the single season hit record.
The opener and title track, “Expert In A Dying Field” is the best song The Beths have ever made. The lyrics are as sharp and clever as they’ve ever been, the hook is gold and the song just keeps building momentum, and building momentum, and building momentum. What starts off as an understated pop tune has turned anthemic in less than four minutes. The backing vocals are fantastic, the guitar sound is great. It’s a song that could make you dance or cry. It’s the perfect Beths song. That last minute is unstoppable. I’ve gotten goosebumps listening to it more times than I can count. “Knees Deep” rocks. It’s like 65% chorus which is fine because it’s one of the best choruses the band has ever put down. It makes sense to keep hammering the chorus button if you’ve landed on something this good. No problems here. Speaking of great choruses, this record is just chock full of ‘em. The chorus on “Best Left” wasn’t my favorite initially but I’ve really come around on it. It’s really fun to sing along to. Important quality. “Change In The Weather,” written by guitarist Jonathan Pearce proves that there’s somehow more than one band member capable of writing brilliant Beths tunes. “Head In The Clouds” and “A Passing Rain” are Beths songs. Which, hell yeah as per usual. At this point it’s almost unremarkable how this band just churns out great indie pop tunes. Unusually happy “When You Know You Know” is heavier on acoustic guitars, providing a minor change on The Beths formula. It works wonders. The heavier “Silence Is Golden” similarly tweaks the formula, providing the perfect musical backdrop for Liz Stokes’ agitated vocal performance. It’s the song that probably best captures the feeling of loud construction being done beside your home. “I Want To Listen” is also a bit of a tweak on The Beths formula. It’s a jaunty little pop tune that reminds me of similar moments in the Rilo Kiley catalog. It is unsurprisingly great. “I Told You That I Was Afraid” returns to both the anxiety and the continuous forward momentum of Future Me Hates Me and does so exceedingly well. It rocks. It’s also an exceedingly tight song, the band seems to be moving as one on this one. “Your Side” is probably my second favorite song on the record, a melancholy post-breakup tune. It’s another one with a practically perfect chorus. Oh and the guitar sound is great. Especially the guitar after Stokes sings the “oo-oo” part after the chorus. That’s what music should be right there. Closer “2am” is a classic Sad, Slower Closing Song. Y’know like “My Hometown” or “Dublin City Sky” or “Gospel” or “Butterfly.” I’m broadly suspicious of this specific type of song. Slowing it down means you lose something in energy and just generally rocking (rocking, always a good thing!) so you’ve gotta make up for it somehow. And “2am” does. This type of song works when the lyrics pick up the slack, when the slow and spareness of the song makes you focus on the lyrics, and when the emotion in the lyrics complements the pace and atmosphere of the song. When the song is sad enough that mustering energy for it seems like it’s beyond the point. “2am” is a song like that. And to be fair to “2am” it does build towards the end. After an album of playing chicken with finally saying goodbye, “2am” finally does it.
So we reach the end of the road for the jump rope gazers. We were with them through the anxious crush stage, the even more anxious early relationship stage and now it’s time to say goodbye. “Expert In A Dying Field” laments all the time and knowledge now gone to waste. While on Jump Rope Gazer’s “You Are a Beam of Light” the late night phone call was stilted and sad at least there was a late night phone call, but on “Head In The Clouds” our narrator has no one to listen to her at night. The nervous self-doubt that’s shown up again and again re-appears at the worst times on songs like “A Passing Rain” and “I Told You That I Was Afraid.” Our narrator remains torn; on “Your Side” she wants nothing more than a dramatic, tearful apology, a romantic gesture, a chance that maybe they can get back together. Maybe it’s not over, or at least not over forever. But on “Best Left” she indicates that some things are best left to rot. Some things need to be put behind, and forgotten. One of the constants in these three records is that sense of uncertainty. On Future Me Hates Me, our narrator indicates that she’ll never reveal her emotions on one song while indicating she has to on another. On Jump Rope Gazers she’ll declare her love on one song, hoping it’s going to work out while indicating that she has no serious belief that it will in others. Finally, on Expert In A Dying Field she’s unsure if the best way forward is to keep looking back or to try to move forward. One way or another the story of the jump rope gazers is over though. On “2am” we finally hear how it all fell apart. We hear about the good times, but we also hear about the communication breakdown. We hear our narrator reminiscing about when it finally fell apart:
“There was news I was nervous to tell you
Through the filter softening the words we said
Were you mad? Tell the truth, I can take it
I could hear the engine as you drove away
Through the blinds, saw the glow of the light fade”
And that’s where we leave it. She asks one more time if he still feels it, but it seems there’s no response. This is it. To some degree, she was right; she probably does hate past her.
Outro: The End of the Weekend
The Beths, great band. If you’ve somehow read this far without having heard them go listen to them. I’d listen to them in chronological order but really you can’t go wrong. I admit I had to stretch the concept a bit, leave some stuff out of the narrative and all that. But I think that puts it more and not less in line with most concept records. In truth, I think these three records do work as a loose narrative if you want to view them that way, which I sometimes do. If you don’t then you can choose to view them as three of the best indie pop records of the past decade. That works too. Either way it’s a run for the ages.
As a music nerd I am naturally list-obsessed (sometimes I worry I’m getting too close to the High Fidelity guys) so here’s a bunch of Beths lists I assembled while I was writing this.

2024.05.12 17:28 gf99b Learning to ride with no previous experience

Hello, everyone. After much persuasion from my father, I finally got my motorcycle permit on Friday after acing the test. However, I'm finding that practicing what I have learned or know is more difficult than I planned. I know this post may be long, but I'm wondering if anyone had pointers for learning to ride without killing myself or damaging anything. (I also need some encouragement at this point too. lol)
Yesterday my dad accompanied me to a local school parking lot with his Yamaha V-Star 1300cc to start practicing. I was excited until I got on the bike, then I became overwhelmed with anxiety. The last thing I want to do is crash his bike or, far worse, injure myself.
I've never ridden a motorcycle as a passenger, let alone operate one. I've also never operated an ATV or smaller bike with similar controls, nor have I operated a traditional manual/standard transmission. So I'm very green: I need to learn to shift properly with the clutch, learn the throttle, learn balancing/leaning, etc.
Yesterday's practice session went horribly and has me discouraged. For the first three or four attempts to launch, the engine kept dying as I released the clutch. (I'm trying to release the clutch slowly while also slowly giving it some gas.) When I finally started moving a little bit, things went OK for a second or two before I started braking. When I did that, I must have opened the throttle because the bike started rocketing. For some reason I put my foot down on the ground, which I know you should never do.
I went again, and had a similar problem occur. After that I was too nervous to continue practicing.
It's so frustrating because everyone else makes it look so easy. I've seen many friends and family members riding motorcycles, and have seen several people much younger than me riding without problem. I'd like to learn to ride because it a motorcycle seems so much more fuel efficient than a car (including my car that gets ~30 MPG), and would probably be better for going on long trips where I'd like to do some photography. It also seems like it'd be more fun/interesting than going in a car. I love riding a tradition bicycle, so I (along with my dad) thought I'd also like riding a motorcycle.
I've looked at the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and found a session 30 miles away, but the next open session doesn't start until August. I think I'm going to take the course, but worry about what if I still don't understand it by the end of the session. The session is $350 and is 10 hours, offered by a local Harley-Davidson dealer.
I know the issues are with me... I'm new to everything here. However, I've also been looking at smaller bikes that might be easier to learn on. I found a 2008 Suzuki GZ250 that looks like a good beginner bike and is (barely) in my price range at $2,000. (It has about 5,000 miles on it.) It appears to be a lot lighter bike than the Yamaha (300 lbs. dry weight as opposed to ~750 lbs. dry) and has a smaller 250cc engine that I think would be easier to manage as a beginner. Should I consider getting it? My dad tells me that every bike handles differently and therefore you have to re-learn for every bike, but I think I just need to master the controls and get the "motions" down (clutching while shifting, braking, properly controlling the throttle.) I don't want anything fancy at this point; I just want something easier to learn on that will get me around. (My dad wanted me to have the Yamaha so he himself could get a second bike, upgrading to a Harley.)
I've also wondered if I should consider practicing on an ATV, since the controls are very similar but it eliminates the balance aspect. One thing I kept worrying about was tipping over, hence why I kept having my feet out and trying to keep the engine rev'd up so it wouldn't die. One big worry of mine at this point is shifting once I get comfortable launching and pick up speed, as at that point I'm going fast enough to actually do some damage.
I'm discouraged and frustrated because it seems so easy. Is it just me, or do many beginners struggle to even launch? Should I continue practicing with my dad in empty lots, or should I just wait until August for the MSF course and hope I can absorb it all?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The Scapegoat
After the break, we cut to the entrance ramp, where The Scapegoat Jack Perry is entering the ring, he tears a kids sign and flips him off! What a piece of shit.
He picks up a microphone
“Well, well, well. I have got to say, this is the most miserable and pathetic wrestling show I’ve ever seen. You guys are lucky I got paid a lot to be here tonight, or else I would’ve done a show for WBW in Pittsburgh. Now, that piece of shit Rick Grayson expects me to wrestle tonight, but to be quite honest I would rather kiss his dead mother, then fight in this ring with you stupid fucking fans.”
*crowd boos*
“I have nothing to prove. I’m your favorite wrestler’s favorite wrestler, I am the best bout machine, I am the Cerebral Assassin, I am The Animal, I am the. best. in. the. world.”
*the crowd begins to boo at Jack Perry…*
This is until the crowd hears a very familiar song…
“LOOOOOK IIIINNNN MY EYEEESSS, WHAT DO YOU SEEEEE”
“OH MY GOD, IT'S C.M PUNK, HE HAS ARRIVED IN GLORY WRESTLING REVOLUTION!”
HOLY SHIT, HOLY SHIT, HOLY SHIT, HOLY SHIT
“Look who it is, it’s Jungle Boy”
*crowd pops*
“I know we don’t have a very good history, Jack. You get in my face backstage, I choke you, somebody gets scared for their life, yada yada yada. But I was willing to put all of that aside…”
“But you, you call yourself the best in the world? Not only is that disrespectful to me of course. But it’s disrespectful to every other wrestler in the company. The only thing you’ve ever accomplished in your wrestling career is winning a tag team championship with your pet dinosaur.”
“In a world of innovators, aces, like the great Tanahashi, who is going to be on this very show”
*pop*
“A mind, like the Viper Randy Orton.”
*pop*
“Your the best in the worl…”
Jack Perry interrupts C.M Punk
“Do me a favor, shut the fuck up, please.”
boos
“Here is punk coming into another promotion and fucking everything up once again. Here’s the deal, nobody wants you in any promotion, you are what people call a cancer. You are in WWE, you are in AEW, hell, you even were when you lasted 2:14 against Mickey Gall in the UFC. Nobody likes you, nobody wants you here, you would be better off leaving for another 9 years.”
C.M Punk takes a mic once again!
“I’ve choked you once, I don’t really feel the need to do it again, I don’t like to be the bad guy here, I don’t want to fight you. But I will do whatever is necessary, and if I have to kick your ass again, in front of all these people in Las Vegas, so help me god I will not hesitate.”
Jack Perry and C.M Punk get closer and closer, they start to swing! They are now back at swinging at each other! Security gets called to break them up!
C.M Punk is in the Revolution, and he makes it clear he’s going after The Scapegoat!

2024.05.07 20:24 r1char00 Dave Meltzer's Top 8 wrestlers of all-time(From his book: the top 100 Wrestlers of all-time book released in 2024)

I was just reading the updated 2024 edition of Meltzer's classic book rating his favorite wrestlers. There's been quite a bit of change since the original 2002 book. Here are the top 8 and Dave's descriptions of them.
8. A Japanese Guy Who Traded Chops With Eddie Kingston
I don't remember his name, I think it's Suzuki or Shibata or something. Look him up on Cagematch. But the way he stood there and traded chops with Eddie for 30 minutes was amazing.
7. Trent Beretta
Is he Orange Cassidy's friend? Is he a heel? Either way, his mom makes great cookies.
6. Dax Harwood
I know people usually think of Dax because of his work with FTR, but his singles matches with AEW have been excellent. Yes he never wins but he always sells a lot, and he has a wife and baby to feed.
5. Nick Jackson
I've talked a lot about the Young Bucks, but for my readers who aren't familiar with them, he's the one with the hair which gives him the advantage over Matt in my book. I really love them both though, and they were definitely not the ones who told me that Punk got Colt Cabana fired.
4. Kenny Omega
Kenny has had the most 7 star bangers of any wrestler. If it wasn't for him getting fired from The Elite, he'd be much higher on my list. We'll be following his recovery from diverticulitis on the Observer web site, and it's on sale right now for only $12.98.
3. Darby Allen
Honestly this guy is going to kill himself someday on a PPV and I can't wait to see it. I hope that Sting will be there for that incredible moment. I'm giving the match 8 stars, in advance.
2. Chris Jericho
What can I say about Jericho that he hasn't already paid me to say. The way he can debut a new gimmick every few weeks (or an old one from his WCW days) shows his incredible creativity. I love how he played on the phrase "garbage match" recently, too.
1. Will Ospreay
They don't call him the Ariel Assassin for nothing. The storyline about him retiring the Tiger Driver is going to pay off big, I'm sure. (I prefer the Meltzer Driver but each to his own.) He will eventually overtake Kenny for 7 star bangers, as every match he does is at least a 7 star match. Also he really told off HHH.

2024.05.07 16:45 Inhalationofnewtion 2nd shot with a Friend but it seems to be going the same way as it did before. One way Friendship.

This is long... This is very long.
I'm married, two children, my Wife is awesome. We live in a small community in a wooded/rural area. It's not Donner Pass but we are out in the boonies. We have to be somewhat able and self sufficient. It's not off grid prepper stuff but we have to be able to do more ourselves than if we lived in town.
A few years back, my Wifes Friend and I guess you'd call him a friendly acquaintance of mine moved up on the mountain. Let's call him Frank. The guy has issues, as do we all, but he's functional, intelligent, and quite handy. A decent guy to know to help get things done.
When he moved in, the property he bought was a disaster. Previous owner used to get all manner of Amazon returns and stockpile the stuff. Also anything else he could drag home for free or dirt cheap. All kinds of crap everywhere with zero organization. A couple of giant burn piles where of course he's burning just whatever, a pickup truck bed camper in disrepair full of stuff, ratty tarps and tents covering more crap. Squalor and chaos.
The property does have a functional well and **some** kind of septic system and there's power run to it. There's a small building attached to a camper but with some work it can be made liveable. So we sort of have the bare essentials covered. We just have a ton of work to do.
So I'm excited, my Wife is excited, Frank is excited as well. We all figure let's get Frank set up. Running water, working toilet, sink, wood/coal stove, major cleanup on the property, a water heater, washing machine, a shower or even a bath tub would be real nice as well. Basic stuff so he can do for himself because at this point he's showering and doing laundry and eating supper all at our house. I figure if I'm in a spot, I could go up there and have a shower or do laundry you know?
We get to work. First we have to finish even moving the guy in so he can be rid of the trailer he's renting in a trailer park. Turns out the guy is a hoarder and it's heavy. The guy has more stuff packed into his trailer then we actually know what to do with. At least it's nothing disgusting and most of it I can see at least some value in it. I can see why he'd keep hold of things like this but Man there's a LOT!!! I don't know how he can even store all this stuff so I figured let's make this easy and I bought him a 40' shipping container and had it delivered to his place. We get it there and we assemble storage racks that were left on the property by the previous owner inside the shipping container. I'm not rich but at this point I don't terribly miss the money and I figure helping this dude out will benefit me and my Family. Within two weeks, Frank is out of his trailer and everything he owns is jammed into the shipping container. It's tight but it's somewhat organized at least.
Now! Let's get to work! And we do. We start clearing out some of the actual trash. Say 15 hours and we can notice that we made a dent. Another 15 hours, it still kind of looks for shit but we can at least make sense of the place now. We're really doing something here! It's heavy and dirty and disgusting but we're having a lot of fun with it and feeling pretty good. As we're going, we find some actual decent things in the piles that the previous owner left behind and we're trying to not waste anything because we're not rich and we might need the stuff.
It gets to a point where it's starting to become really dirty work and even a garden hose would be pretty dang amazing just to at least wash up a little bit because we really don't know what's in some of these piles but Man we're digging deep into them! My Wife goes through the nonsense of getting his power turned on. Frank has enough money saved to get it turned on and to keep it going a while.
Ok, we got power and we can make some water happen now. We scrounged up a shitter and a sink, bought some PVC and got that happening. Now we can wash up and we don't have to crap in the woods anymore. We also found a decent Harmann wood/coal burner and installed that. Nothing ideal but we're looking pretty damn good compared to when we started. The stove was free. The previous owner switched to pellets and had no use for it. We had to get it out and move it of course but nothing we can't handle.
So now it's getting to at least 40 hours at Franks place, maybe 60 hours. I wasn't really keeping track. The place still looks like hell but we're making steady progress and it's more or less "liveable". Meanwhile there are things piling up at my own house. The roof needs a little attention, some work on my backhoe, vehicle repairs and maintenance. Normal everyday stuff that got put to the back burner for a while as we set this guy up but it's starting to pile up and I have to get this shit done.
"Hey Frank, you mind coming down a little while and pitching in with this or that?"
At first, yea he makes his way down and helps out. Not at the crack of dawn, say 11 AM or so. Fine and dandy. This isn't pay work and I don't start early myself, nor do I go very long and hard on these tasks. Put in a couple hours until I feel like I accomplished something and call it a day. I don't think I'm asking much.
After a bit though, he's showing up later and later. If Frank says 12-ish, it means like 2PM or something. One day I have to remove the backhoe from my tractor in order to replace some hydraulic lines. This assembly weighs about 4 tons. It's on a 1967 Case 580 CK. Not the biggest thing but it's no joke. Frank is skilled with cranes and forklifts and other heavy stuff and I figure he could just come down and help me make damn sure this thing is going to be stable. I'm going to have the hydraulics opened up and if it's not properly supported it could move on me and that might well be it for me.
So the day comes. I have my tractor in the driveway and I have the backhoe dismounted from the tractor but still hooked to the hydraulics by around 10-11AM. Now I'm sitting and waiting on Frank. Finally about 1AM he rolls in. The first thing he does is to sit down and use my blowtorch to clean out his one hitter so he can do a little wake and bake. I've been ready and waiting for a couple hours and now the dude is going to sit and get high before we're going to work with some heavy shit and he's burning my propane to do so. Yea I'm kind of annoyed and I let him know. I tried to not be too much of an asshole but I wasn't pleasant about it. I didn't yell or anything but I'm sure I came off kind of asshole-ish.
He finishes up with the one hitter, takes a few wacks off it, says he's go tot go home and crap. Lovely... He's been lighting up my toilet for a while now, what's the big deal? Anyhow he heads back home. I'm sitting there for an hour or so scratching my ass, screw it I'll figure it out. I'm scared as hell but I manage to get my lines replaced. I bring the tractor into position and get the bottom mounting pins locked in. There are two more up top of the backhoe assembly and then it's solidly mounted. I screwed up by not hooking the hydraulic lines from the tractor to the backhoe and doesn't the damn thing just sort of drop right to the ground because the boom, bucket, and dipper arm are open. I took precautions against this but I guess I didn't do very well. I didn't lose the whole show but it scared the hell out of me and I shut the tractor down and walked away for a while. It was a split second and if I was under it I'd either have been dead or wishing for it. I calmed myself down after a while and finished the job. Frank never showed back up that day.
After I got done, I was sitting there a while. After that dopamine hit from getting the job done wore off I was starting to feel pretty let down and pissed off. My Wife and I put real time, and heart and soul in up at Franks place. We'd get up there about 9AM-10AM and get to it. Half the time, Frank would be hungover and it would literally be 2-3 hours until he was any kind of mobile. We're up there at his place trying to get shit done so he has a setup and he's dragging his ass because he was up until 3AM the previous night getting shitfaced.
The plan was, after he was set, we'd get into some nonsense. Cleanouts from tenants that left an apartment full of stuff, scrapping, maybe some lawn work, plowing snow on the mountain here, whatever. Not getting rich but at least paying the bills and having a laugh. At first, Frank is all about it. The cleanouts were his idea. I never knew you actually could get some decent pay for this type of thing. After a while though Frank starts throwing up roadblocks about we need to be an LLC and have a few fairly new looking trucks before we can start when I'm watching something like "Randys Hauling" on the side of a beat up old truck going up and down the mountain and he's getting that pay. On OUR mountain and we could be easily doing this right now! He kept throwing these obstacles up on all sorts of projects. It felt like Frank was deliberately throwing wrenches wherever he could in order to halt any progress.
Eventually I tried talking with him. I told him "I'm not really feeling the return on this investment.". and Frank says "I'm sorry you feel that way.". It kind of went to shit from there. I got to the point where I didn't want anything more to do with him. I was a door mat for a long time in my childhood and it felt like I was getting played for a stooge yet again. It felt like he was also taking advantage of my Wife. But hey, she's been Friends with him for quite a while. In fact she was Friends with him before we were even dating. I'm not going to tell her she can't hang out with the guy. You'll just have to take my word that she's not the type to play around when she's in a committed relationship. Not sure if I have much faith in Frank but I have faith in my Wife.
Frank is no longer coming to the house, there are arguments between my Wife and I about the guy. All I can see is that she's getting played by the guy. Eventually, Frank has a Friend who offers him to go to a blues concert because Franks Friend has noone to go with but has an extra ticket. This is a weekend thing where you camp and party and listen to performers. My Wife is already running ragged here there and everywhere. Frank asks my Wife to keep an eye on his dogs while he's away and of course she wants to help out. She's just like that. One day, turns out my Wife is too busy to take care of it and my Daughter has to go check on the dogs. My Daughter can't find the keys to get inside Franks camper. Now don't you know I have to go up there and take on this guys responsibilities while he's out at a concert partying his ass off. I put my foot down because at this point the guy is messing with the entire Family and holding all of us up. I told my Wife that WE are done with him and shit hit the fan for a while but eventually she started to see shit for herself and we all just cut off from the guy.
This is breaking my heart. I really do love the guy and I know it's killing my Wife to cut off from a Friend. But it's a one way Friendship. Frank will jump for someone he really cares about, but us, we're just useful or so it seems to me.
3 years go by. My Wife still talks with Frank via text and I'm not thrilled with it but I'm not going to push it either. Whatever it's not holding up our show. Time goes by... I simmer down, Frank calms down. I do indeed miss the guy but I'm afraid that if I start talking it'll end up being the same crap all over again. He was good to work with when he felt like it. I work on cars all the time and this guy can look at things and see things that I don't. He's no kind of mechanic but he's already schooled me under the hood as well as setting up a guys garage door that was horribly installed.
In time, yes we do start talking again. I try to make it very clear that if we're going to do anything, we BOTH have to feel properly compensated for our efforts. Be that money, labor swapping, horse trading, whatever. If I do something for Frank and it takes an hour, Frank gets me back satisfactorily and vice versa. This has to be worth it for both of us and all of us.
Well, it happens that Frank finally decides he wants to clean up his property. His truck is not registered, insured, or inspected. His drivers license is expired. There's a lot of scrap up there. I have a road legal truck and I make a proposition. I'll pile scrap on the truck until I feel it's a decent load, he and my Wife will run the load. My wife is a capable driver. She and frank will unload the truck at the scrapyard and meanwhile I'll break the scrap down at his place and have another load ready to go. At the end of the day, the truck gets paid $1 per mile and the tank gets filled for the next day. We split the remainder 3 ways equally. We clean the property up, we all get a few dollars and after a little while he can save the money to get his own truck back on the road.
Frank says there's not enough money in scrapping. There won't be anything left to split after gassing up the truck... Sounds familiar... Ok, how about this then. Let me make a load of absolute BS scrap like old bedsprings, tin cans, and just whatever crap I can, we see how that pays and maybe go from there.
Frank says Hem and Haw, well maybe if it's just Frank and my Wife loading up the truck and they also run and unload the truck he might be in to it. Splitting it 3 ways and with the truck just isn't going to cut it. Now I'm getting confused and a little irritated because I thought the idea was to clean up, not get paid. My Wife also has a screwy elbow and if she goes hard on a job she's in pain the next day. Nope this aint happening. Let's put a pin in this and come back to it. I'm not going to push anymore and my Wife is definitely not into chucking scrap on to the truck as well as off loading it. If he wants to do something and he comes to us, we'll figure it out. If he wants to sit on that scrap, hell with it. I guess this is the Hoarder in his brain talking.
My Wife has a 1896 VW Jetta diesel. It's old and it's been around but it can be made decent. The interior is shit but we have a parts car and a pile of interior parts like carpet and trim, dashboard, and just everything you want to make the inside actually pretty good looking. She's the one that heads up the interior work. I personally hate it. At this point, Frank has no power at his place and he has a little 80cc dirtbike he'd like to use to get up and down the mountain. Private dirt road so we can drive ATV's or golf carts or whatever and it'd be handy.
I have a 300 watt solar panel that I'm not going to use and all the gear to go with it. I have some parts I can use to get his dirtbike going and I know how to get most old carburetted stuff running when it's been sitting a while. We come to an agreement. Frank will be down here working on this Jetta with my Wife until the interior is as good as we can make it. I'll give him the solar panel, help him install it at his place, and get his dirtbike going for him. Also my Wife will handle getting his power back on and a couple of other administrative things. Everyone is feeling OK with it.
We begin. My Wife and I put the first foot forward. We take the solar gear up to his place and get it working. Now at least he can charge his phone and keep a light running. Nothing major but it's something and it's damn handy. I start on the dirtbike. It's a Suzuki 80cc four stroke. The fuel tank is cracked up and leaking like a sieve. I have a tank from an old Honda CR80 and it takes me a while but I get it mounted to the bike and I didn't even have to chop the bike or the tank. The carb on this thing was sitting with fuel in it for years and it's beyond hope. Normally I can open them up and blow the jets with compressed air, maybe carb cleaner and some wires but this thing is completely jammed solid with crap and I can't get it. I have a carb on my shelf and it's actually for that exact engine. So after 6-8 hours of scratching my head and wrenching, I have his bike running just as good as ever and it holds fuel.
Now it's Franks turn. The first day, he actually shows up at a decent hour and the guy is putting his time in. They have the interior all but gutted. Seats, carpet, interior trim(what's left of it) HVAC. Just the dash is left and it's been a good 5 hours so they call it a day. Next day he's right there say 9-10AM. Dang this is working! They're going after removing the cracked up dashboard and something isn't making sense. It seems loose but it's not coming out. I'm out there putzing with my truck and my Wife asks me to come take a look. I get under the dash and I'm looking but I'm damned if I can find what's holding it up. It can wiggle but it's not coming loose. I notice some steel brackets with rivets under the dash just at the bottom of the windshield. All I can think is to cut the rivets loose and the dash will come out but it doesn't make sense because you're not going to get new rivets in when you install the new dash. There's barely room to get a chisel in to cut them loose. Frank figures it out. Frank goes out under the cowl under the hood, pulls up the drip tray and right there are two nuts on studs poking through the firewall. We pull those nuts off and presto the dash is loose! God Damn Frank you're a rock star! I'm SO glad the guy was here! Different perspective? Savant? I don't know but the guy nailed it!
Next day. Again Frank shows up about 10AM and the Jetta is coming around. The carpet is in and looking nice, the trim is installed, The seats are cleaned up and installed. This thing is actually starting to look pretty good! That was a good day. 4-5 hours and they call it. Nice job guys! Looking good!
Next day. Time to install HVAC. We did an AC delete. The Jetta was originally an AC car but most of the gear was gone. The parts car was non-AC and the heater box is much smaller, lighter, and simpler. We clean that up, do a little bit of swapping on wiring harnesses and we install it. Frank isn't here yet and it's about noon. My Wife texts him to see what's up.
Well this girl showed up about midnight last night and the way I gather they were up until the wee hours drinking and boning so he's not into working today. He doesn't know this girl from a hill of beans and about the only thing he DOES know is that she's a real easy piece of ass, I guess pretty cute, and mentally a wreck. Well... Yea I've been hard up myself so I'm trying to be understanding here. If a cute and willing young lady showed up at my place and I was lonely I think I'd take that opportunity as well. He did put some good time in on this vehicle and really saved the day when pulling the dash out. I went to work with my Wife. We got the replacement dash in, Heater installed. Everything assembled, wires routed, job done. The thing looks damn near new on the inside. It was a good 8 hours and I still feel it to day as this was just yesterday and I'm no youngster. My Wife is in pain. I just feel tired.
I can see Franks side, but a deal is a deal. I was trying to talk to my Wife that "We're kind of even right? He put in his time, he really helped out a ton. Neither owes either and we're pretty squared up right?". I wasn't really feeling that but I was willing to be convinced and sort of let it slide. My Wife however doesn't feel that we're square at all. Not only the motorcycle and the solar crap, but she spent hours on the phone and computer and Frank agreed that he'd be there from start to finish on this interior. On the last day, he ditched us because he was busy screwing and drinking with some random chick. While we were finishing up the job, Frank texted my Wife asking if He and this girl could come down to meet and greet. Or would we like to come up and have a fire? My Wife and I are dead tired, it's about 5PM. We normally have supper on the table at this time but we're close and we want to get through it. We're not into entertaining tonight. We want to finish up, get supper, get the kids to bed and crash. We're sure as hell not going up to the junk heap and sitting there at a fire watching these two make out and get tanked up. She texted him something like that. Tired, still working, still have to make supper, not happening.
That's it. If you made it through all that I admire your perseverance and I hope it at least makes sense. This is just my side of course. I have my own issues. I can be an asshole, impatient, I'm kind of obnoxious. I'm trying to work on that stuff and my Wife tells me I'm really reigning it in when I get pissed if something is fighting me. Anymore I'll just walk away and have a smoke or something. I guess I can get sort of pushy when I see shit that needs doing. I want to help but I guess I'm aggressive or too Gung Ho about it.
Anyways, it feels like this relationship with Frank is going to end up the same place as it left off before. All I can think to do is just not really seek him out anymore. If he happens to need something... I don't know... My Wife and my Children and myself are a team. We've got enough going on and we don't need someone dragging us down. I don't want this to get to the point where it did before. I feel like I screwed up even letting this guy back into my life and I'm kind of stressing.

2024.05.05 11:57 Spurious_33 Newer kei trucks as daily drivers.

I have recently been looking at in the future importing a new Suzuki carry, from what I have seen these newer kei trucks seemingly have 4 star safety ratings, larger load capacities and larger decks. I have found it hard to find english reviews for these kei trucks as nobody imports them due to rules like the 25 year rule. Fortunately afaik you can import these to New Zealand.

2024.05.04 17:27 Fetishgeek Guys best car for family of 4 under 10 lakhs

Me and my family has no experience about cars like at all, it would be amazing if you guys can help out. Today we visited showroom and took interest on Maruti suzuki arena brezza, looks good milage could be better, safety is 4 star. From my inexperienced vision it looks good but I feel like it would be too naive to choose this early. My dad friend recommended us Ford ecosport, what do you guys think would be a better choice?
We need medium sized (preferably little smaller) family car that looks good and get work done.

2024.05.02 16:08 Ilovecheeseytoast I think my car is cursed (AC issue)

I think my car is cursed (AC issue)
Well, I finally fixed the sinking brake of my Suzuki Alto (it was a bad ABS but the warning light didn't come on until I wiggled the plug a bit).
Hopped into my car and headed home from the garage after doing my MOT. Gleeful.
Until.
I turn on the A/C (that I had cleaned and refilled in 2022) and....nothing.
So, today I turned it on again and it makes a constant loud noise, almost like the noise your windscreen washer makes when you engage it along with cold air blowing out from the engine bay. I couldn't physically see where it was coming from but I've circled the area where I felt the strongest air flow:

If anyone has any ideas because I'm about to lose the plot.
A link to the AC blueprint can be found here but I can't make heads or tails of it: https://www.megazip.net/zapchasti-dlya-avtomobilej/suzuki/alto-a-star-celerio-1853/amf310-18218/amf310-maruti-325127/air-conditioner-3791019

2024.05.02 00:50 anonym2949 Questions to the big riders with smaller bikes.

Hey guys.
I'm a fat guy, 375lbs at 6' and wanting to ride again for a while now. Been eyeing the cruisers for sale in my country and wanted to ask some questions about size and power.
Some Info:
Most importantly I am on a tight budget at the moment, so the motorcycles I could get are
I'd really like to test sit all of them, but I am from a small european country where cruisers dont seem to be as popular as for example in the US. Id basically have to drive 100 miles to testsit each bike, and it have to testsit them all to know what fits best.
So before I do any of that I wanted to ask you guys if there is even a chance that one of those bikes is chubby enough to fit my height and weight somewhat well. I would guess that all viragos and the Intruder are out. They all seem to scrawny/small for me.
So the Shadow 600 and the Dragster are left.
Are there people in my size category that tried those bikes? How were they? Was the power enugh? I would use them as a commuter and for daytrips (up to 300km id guess?), I dont need endless power, but it would be nice if I could overtake semi-trucks fast since we have small curvy roads where you dont get to many chances to overtake them.
If the Shadow 600 and DragsteV-Star (whatever) are not enough for me, my next alternative would be the Kawasaki VN800 and Honda Magna 750 for which Id have to save till next year, would these 2 bikes be big/bulky enough for me?
Thanks to reading (and engaging)! Ride safe!
Edit: Just to clarify, american bikes are out of the picture. They are so rare around here that even the shitty ones cost a fortune.

2024.04.29 15:18 starter_fail TRIP REPORT: 19 days Japan Golden Route + Hiroshima, Miyajima Island & Kanazawa - April 2024

Osaka->Miyajima Island->Hiroshima->Kyoto->Kanazawa->Tokyo Thank you Redditors for all the tips & insights during my trip planning. Here's a report to give back!
Biggest surprise & highlight: When we booked this trip, we did not expect to see cherry blossoms but because of the cold snap, we saw them everywhere but Tokyo! What a thrill. They are a truly special sight.
Preface: Seven ladies, late 50’s-mid 70’s trip. All varying degrees of physical fitness. Booked guided tours to have group activities, then separated to do our own thing. Some meals were together, sometimes we were on our own. We did a surprising amount of conbini & grocery store meals. Moderate hotels. I’m the group planner and somewhat OCD but know there needs to be flexibility for unforeseen events. By the end of the trip we all strayed from the itinerary except for booked activities.
Pre trip: Booked flights directly with United. Flew open jaw into Osaka, then out of Haneda. Booked Hotels direct & thru Hotels.com, any special tours, sightseeing train to Nara, Osaka Mint Cherry viewing tickets (free), Nishikawa reservations, baseball tickets, purchased JR Kansai Hiroshima pass & Haruka voucher on Klook, downloaded Suica on iPhones (my Visa card worked!), downloaded Ubigi (10G was used up literally when I was at Haneda flying home).
Transportation: Regional JR Pass Kansai Hiroshima was a good deal for us. Osaka->Himeji->Miyajimaguchi->Hiroshima->Kyoto. We picked up both JR Pass & Haruka trip at the JR Office at KIX. While we were there, we reserved seats for our trip to Himeji, Miyajimaguchi & Hiroshima. For Kyoto & Kanazawa, we went to the station early and reserved seats that morning and it was no problem. The shinkansen was so comfortable! There’s an overhead shelf for bags but if you needed, there’s probably enough room for small bags to keep in front of you. Loads of leg room.
Having a SUICA on your phone was a game changer. Tap in/out at all stations. It was nice knowing what the balance was as you’re going along. Buses were convenient and would often take you closer to where you need to go. Everywhere but Tokyo, you would enter thru the back, tap in, then tap out & exit at the front by the driver. In Tokyo, you would tap in & enter at the front & exit at the back (no tap out). In Kanazawa, they do not take IC cards (210¥) on city bus. Only JR buses, Kanazawa loop bus and Machi bus (different color buses than city bus) I know, that confused us too.
Uber app worked everywhere. Taxis also respond to Uber so there’s no need to download GO Taxi if you already have Uber.
Shopping: The Yen was at its all-time low so shopping was pretty fun. My favorite places to shop were at Uji for tea, Chion Ji market for handicrafts (some vendors took credit cards), grocery stores for food souvenirs (esp anything yuzu) and conbinis for mini bottles of Kewpie mayo for little stocking stuffer gifts. If you are looking for a kimono or art for your walls, buy them in Kyoto. Kyoto has many 2nd hand kimono shops and they are a bargain there. I bought a beautiful Haori for ¥550 (roughly $4 USD!) and there’s a shop called Wargo where they sell kimonos for ¥1 per gram. I bought a kimono as a gift there for ¥547! They also had some beautiful obis there that you can use for wall hangings (¥990). For inexpensive general items, look at Hands, Daiso or Seria (fun household things). In general, things are at least ¥50 more expensive in Tokyo.
Miscellaneous tips– hotels all provided loungewear, so I didn’t pack PJs. Hotel provided most toiletries including toothbrushes, hair brush & razors, tho not body lotion (just buy at the drug store). Unless you have little feet or big feet, the slippers provided won’t fit. I’m a big Japanese tea drinker and all the hotel green tea sucked (shocking?). Drank a lot of iced tea from the conbinis. Food from conbini was great but find a grocery store near your hotel to buy fruit & pre-made food for cheap meals. Luggage transfers worked like a charm. Super easy and not expensive.
Having 7 people on the trip was a challenge at times so booking private tours here and there solved a lot of issues. Along with all the great info they provide, it was nice having a guide to maximize our day and keep us from walking in circles, as we tend to do.
Having few garbage cans in the country is no joke. Carry your garbage back to your hotel with you. When we did see random garbage cans, we gasped. I saw 3 public garbage cans (not with the conbini) the whole time I was in Japan, 2 of them in Peace Park in Hiroshima.
Also carry a little towel with you when you wash your hands at a public toilet. You can get cheap ones at Daiso or any discount store. I also carried soap strips as many toilets didn’t have soap dispensers either.
Bring well broken in shoes. I had On Running for every day walking, Blundstones for hiking & rainy days. They’re also good for some temple walks on uneven ground. I also brought Clarix flats for short walks to dinner shoes. I could have done without the Clarix shoes.
Steps – Highest was about 31K in Osaka and it got progressively lower (averaging about 20K) as we became more comfortable with taking public transportation by the time we got to Tokyo.
I forgot to bring a sun hat. We had some hot sunny days and would have liked one. Buy sunscreen while you’re there. I’m in love with Bioré UV Aqua Rich. Goes on smoothly with no white cast.
Be aware of lunch times. A lot of restaurants close between 2-5.
Learn a little bit of Japanese. The Japanese people are so kind and gracious, even a smile and a bow will get you far. Google translate is your friend.
Collect goshuin at temples & shrines. They are beautiful and a nice memory of your trip and it makes temple hopping a little more fun. Eki stamps are fun to collect as well. Most of the train stamps we got we outside a JR office.
Hotels:
Osaka: Hotel Monterrey Grasmere (2 nights) – great location on top of Namba station, although we got lost underground trying to find it the 1st time. Did not buy breakfast. Comfy, traditional rooms. No onsen. Used luggage service to send large luggage to Kyoto (hotel aided) & brought smaller bags the next few nights.
Miyajima Island – Miyajima Villa (1 night) – our favorite hotel during our trip. Located very close to the pier, we took the half board plan. Loads of selection for breakfast & dinner with Japanese & Western dishes, including Hiroshima oysters. Relaxed vibes. Onsen was the best. I slept in my single loft room for 8.5 hours and it was glorious. Happy hour was nice. Learned the highball is a popular drink in Japan.
Hiroshima – Hotel Intergate Hiroshima (2 nights) – good, comfortable rooms & location, about a 15 minute bus ride or walk to the station. Onsen & happy hour available. Breakfast was great, loads of selection. They had a beef stew that we’re still talking about. I love the sliding door between the bedroom and the hallway to the bathrooms. If you're one to get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, having a door shielding the bedroom from the light was awesome.
Kyoto – Mimaru Suites Kyoto Shijo (6 nights) – Loved this place. It was great to spread out. Booked 2 rooms with 2 BR each. Had in suite laundry, dining area and kitchenette. Staff was especially friendly and helpful, happy hour was great (craft beer, sake & sodas) plus staff did calligraphy lessons. Good location near the Karasuma line & buses. No onsen but nice bathtub and bought bath salts. Lots of conbini breakfasts + a good local gyudon place nearby. Used luggage service to send large luggage to Tokyo (hotel aided) & brought smaller bags the next few nights.
Kanazawa – Onyado Nono Kanazawa Hot Spring (3 nights) – Great hotel, hard beds and lumpy pillows. Tatami floors, no shoes past the front lobby (there were show lockers). Close to Omicho Market and a 15 min walk to the Castle. Caters to an Asian crowd. Breakfast was probably the best here. Sashimi, ikura, crab, tempura oh my. Plus the coffee machine also made matcha lattes. Most organized with busy breakfast lines. Onsen was nice, had sauna & different pools, including a cold pool. Crowded at times. Would be perfect except for the pillows & bed.
Tokyo – Asakusa View Annex Rokku (4 nights) – Very nice hotel, comfortable bed. Didn’t buy breakfast (friend had BF there one day and said it was expensive & not good). Great location, near Hoppy Place, a 24 hour Donki & a Family Mart that had really good pork baos (along with Famichicki and egg sandos) and a coffee shop for BF. Close to bus lines & a 7 min walk to the Ginza line. No onsen but found a place with private sauna & bath nearby. Also room has a nice bathtub with really hot water. Hotel caters to an Asian crowd (and boy they were louder than we were. Lol). Happy hour on 10th floor from 3-10 with wagashi & snacks, juice, soda, coffee & tea (no booze). Nice views of the Skytree. There is a luggage room with luggage locks where you can keep luggage if you come in before check in or have a late afternoon flight.
Highlights & low lights. Things that were planned, unplanned and things I didn’t do. I think I scheduled my trip pretty well, there were only a few things I didn’t do because we spent more time at another place. Flexibility is key.
Osaka – 1.5 days
• Hello Kity Haruka from KIX – a great intro to Japan
• Underground navigation was a challenge at 1st but eventually you get the hang of it and what to look for
• Had a great jetlagged 3:30am ramen at Hanamaruken Namba in Hozenji Yochoko
• We had puffer fish at Kuromon Market and didn’t die
• We got (free) tickets to the Osaka Mint for late blooming cherry walk but never went because Osaka Castle Park was full of cherry trees in bloom! We did the entire walk enjoying the views. We never made it inside the Castle proper either (which OK since we were going to Himeji).
Himeji – ½ day
• Beautiful architecture in original state. If you have mobility issues, reconsider going inside. It’s a 6 floor walk up with steep stairs. No elevator.
• Himeji has a English speaking volunteer guide group that you can apply for online.
Miyajima Island – 1.5 days
• We were really glad to have stayed on the island overnight. It was so peaceful at night and to see the Torii lit up was pretty magical.
• Having an onsen is pretty key to recovery from walking. When booking any subsequent trips to Japan, an onsen is a must.
• Breakfasts are amazing. There is so much variety and I love the little dishes they serve things in. “Just a taste” portion sizes.
• Do eat oysters in every form & Momiji manju (maple leaf shaped filled cakes) here
• Wear the right kind of shoes if you’re hiking Mt Misen. The hike down with uneven steps
was really hard on my body and I didn’t wear my Blundstones.
• Seeing the Torii during low tide was pretty cool too as we were able to walk out to it.
Hiroshima – 1 day
• The Peace Museum & Peace Park should be on your list of things to see in Japan.
• Hiroshima Castle was underwhelming after going to Himeji.
• If you are fans of the Toyo Carp, Lawson’s has fun souvenirs and branded candy and snacks. Surprisingly disappointing is the Carp fan store. No hats or t-shirts. Must go to the stadium for the good stuff.
• Fun food tour with Magical Trip. We had really good food at all 3 places – okonomiyaki at a small izakaya, dumplings at a lively dumpling place and really good sashimi at the sushi place.
Kyoto – 6 days
• Nishiki Market – ate a lot of yummy skewered things – octopus, squid, eel, fried oysters, wagyu beef. Spent a lot of time at the spice store and sticked up on dashi & furukake.
• Gion Nishikawa – I was underwhelmed by this 2* Michelin restaurant. The service was not as refined than what I received at other Michelin starred restaurants. Two dishes were misses (sea bream & clam), tho the mackerel was the best sushi I ate in Japan.
• Loved the garden at Ginkaku-Ji & the Philosopher’s Path walk
• Loved the indigo dye place Roketsu. The owner & family were really sweet. Made a little tote bag for my mom with cherry blossoms on it.
• The night time spring illumination at Kodai-Ji was fantastic. Worth going to after a long day.
• Loved the cooking class at Cooking Sun. We made an izakaya menu. Everything is doable at home (with the right ingredients).
• The monthly handicrafts market at Chion Ji is fabulous! It happens on the 15th of each month – no junk! Clothing, tea, food, pottery, etc. Super fun, spent the whole morning here.
• Heian Jingu – thought their Reisai festival started today, but all we saw were a bunch of old Japanese men coming out of the main building with goodie bags. There was the much bigger event the next day with dancing and singing.
• Went to Jins to get some glasses made. They were so inexpensive. By the time they deducted discounts and duty free, the glasses turned out to be about $70 USD (I have a simple prescription). I went to the smaller Daimaru location but there is a bigger store near Kyoto Station. It’s done in a few hours if it’s a simple prescription. If you have a complicated prescription (i.e Progressive lenses), get them done in Tokyo at the start of your trip and pick them up at the end of the trip, as they will take 10 days to do.
• Thai massage at Aree Thai. It was fantastic. Legs felt great the rest of the trip and my back eventually got better.
• UJI! Green tea is my every day drink, so it was nice to be where my tea & matcha come from. I also signed up for a volunteer guide here to take us to Byodo-In, Ujigama Shrine. We also participated in a traditional tea ceremony and also had a tea tasting where I discovered I can actually eat gyokuro leaves. The guides (we ended up with 2) were sweet and we all had lunch together at a really good place with matcha soba and also got matcha ice cream! We also went shopping for tea (of course) and food items with matcha (cookies, soba, candy). Uji is such a pretty town and it wasn’t super crowded.
• Late afternoon hike at Fushimi Inari. It was crowded, but I did take the group to the “hidden” bamboo grove where we did have some fun and some peace, then jumped back on the main trail. Like everyone says, the crowd thins out after a while. We hiked up to #10 to see if we could get another goshuin but it closed at 3:30.
• On the way to Kyoto Station, we walked by an enormous temple complex Higashi Hongan. Very impressive.
• The Kintetsu Aoniyoshi sightseeing train to Nara was so nice. Tickets open up exactly 1 month before. Salon car tickets (for 3 or 4 people) are very competitive. Too bad the ride is only ½ hour from Kyoto (you can also take it from Osaka).
• Because we took the sightseeing train we didn’t get into Nara until 11:30. I could have spent the entire day here. We went to Kofuku-Ji, Todai-Ji, Tamukeyama Hachimangu and had a good meal cooked by a grandma in the Naramachi area. We don’t know exactly what we ate but it was delish.
• We took a wagashi making class at Toraya in Nara. It was so fun and Masao and his family are so nice and it was great to see his shop and his passion for making wagashi.
• Kurama to Kibune hike. Oh this was one of my favorite days. First, the Eizan train line is a delight with themed trains. Must come back to see the Maple tunnel. The hike itself wasn’t super hard, lots of stairs but at least they were even. Very pretty hike, loads of atmosphere. Also there were bathrooms and a vending machine near the top. Who fills those up anyways? Great eel box lunch afterwards. . It was a great place to get away from the crowds.
• Demachiyanagi Station is a hoot. I love Japanese trains!
• Stopped by Ippodo Tea and bought more. Crowded but orderly.
• Nijo Castle – great tour of the inside. Reproductions of beautiful art panels, but it gives you insight to what it was like back then. Went an hour & a half before closing, crowds thinned out for outside pics and nice lighting.
• Things that I had on my list but did not do: Shoden-Ji, Kamagamo, Kiyomizudera (& Nannenzaka & Sannenzaka). I was planning for an early morning to Kiyomizudera but I decided to sleep in. Only regret is that I didn't see the famous cherry tree at Sannenzaka before it fell.
Kanazawa – 2.5 days
• Omicho Market – fun market. Loads of vendors selling omiyage. Lunch was a big sushi platter that was under $20 USD! Also had gold leaf ice cream but it wasn’t worth it,
• Kenroko-en. Wow, what a garden. I absolutely loved it, it really is a perfect Japanese garden. One of my favorite gardens in the world. Going at sunset was magical.
• Stayed up late (9:30, ha) to try out the hotel’s ramen bar. Pretty good!
• Kanazawa Castle – worth seeing how they reproduced the inside of the castle using traditional woodworking methods. The craftmanship is amazing. Went back at night for their Saturday night illumination and garden show.
• Nagamachi Samurai District – nice walking around and seeing the old homes, one of which was open to the public.
• The one time I decided to not look at Google reviews but just duck into a local restaurant was a fail.
• Higashi Chaya District – super touristy with loads of shops and restaurants in the old machiyas, but it was fun to see people dressed up in kimonos here. Plus we saw a wedding!
• Hired a van & driver to take us to Takayama (fun morning market!), Hida Furukawa (charming town with carp running thru the canal) & the World Heritage towns of Suganuma & Ainokura. I made the right move by going to these 2 towns vs Shirakawa-Go because they were less crowded (further away and harder to get to by public trans). The misty day made the houses even more idyllic.
• Did not go to DT Suzuki Museum or Museum of Contemporary Art, Ishiura Shrine or Hirosaka Shrine. Ended up spending more time at the Castle. Also the weather was really nice for a change in Kanazawa, so it was nice being outside.
Tokyo – 4 days
• Follow Tokyo Cheapo on IG for festival happenings. I found out about both the Wisteria Festival (not yet in full bloom but still very beautiful) and the Azalea Festival (WOW WOW WOW) thru the account and it was worth moving stuff around to go to these places.
• Senso-Ji – very crowded. Walked behind the stalls at Nakamise to avoid the crowds. Fun to watch the kimono parade. Came back at night to see it all lit up and no crowds.
• Hoppy Street – ended up at a place that charged a cover (couldn’t quite figure out if it was tourist tax or not). Food was good and cooked in front of you but I sure wish I didn’t look at the ceiling… place was filthy.
• Took a guided tour of Tsukiji inner & outer market. Glad we took a tour, otherwise we would have been here for hours. Afterwards we went to Asakusa to a sushi restaurant where the chef taught us how to form the rice for sushi. It was great fun and the sushi was delicious!
• Meiji Jingu – wow, an oasis in the city. The forested paths were so beautiful, it’s hard to believe this shrine is in the middle of a bustling city.
• Walked to Meiji Jingu Stadium for the baseball game. Along the way I saw one of the Tokyo Toilets, Hatanomori Hachiman Shrine (a very nice location), Olympic Stadium & Museum, where they had some of the cauldrons from past Olympics.
• JAPANESE BASEBALL IS SO FUN and Carp fans are a RIOT. They were the visitors but they took over the entire left field half of the stadium. Poor Swallows fans had no competition here. Food & drinks were amazingly inexpensive and the beer girls were the best! Next on my bucket list is to go to a Carps game at Zoom Zoom Stadium in Hiroshima (they were out of town the days were there).
• Gotokuji Cat Shrine was super cute with all the maneki-neko. And there was a CAT TRAIN that took you closer to the shrine!
• Shirohige’s Totoro cream puffs were so cute I didn’t want to eat them.
• Food tour in Shibuya – fantastic sushi, sake and skewers! And of course we did the Scramble a bunch of times.
• I did a post on the Tokyo Toilet project here so I won’t go into it more here but it was one of the highlights of my trip to Tokyo.
• Did not go to Kappabashi (all shopped out by this time), Ueno or Kamakura (it rained all day the day I planned to go and decided to stay in Tokyo)
Thanks for reading my wall of text. Ask any questions here or DM me.

2024.04.25 06:50 eccothedauphin Yamaha PG-1 vs. Suzuki Burgman?

So, I'm an indecisive person at heart so di ko talaga alam kung ano pipiliin ko sa dalawang to.
I'm planning to buy a motorcycle some time this year and initially, ang nirerecommend ng papa ko sakin is yung Suzuki Burgman. However, nabalitaan ko na dumating yung Yamaha PG-1 dito and I noticed how it looked like my dream motorcycle, which is the Honda Super Cub. So ngayon, I'm in a dilemma; do I go the practical route and pick the Burgman which is automatic and cheaper to purchase? Or do I reach for the stars and go for the more aesthetic looking and semi-automatic but a bit more expensive PG-1 na pwede narin panakip butas sa dream motorcycle ko na Super Cub?
Of course aware naman ako na di lang yung presyo nila ang dapat ko tignan pag dating sa pag bili ng motor. So if you're all willing to help a girl out, can anyone provide a comparison between these two motorcycles? Like which one is more fuel efficient, easy to maintain, and generally just more sulit? I plan to use the motorcycle to go to and from work. Maybe onting lakwatsa din sa Makati, Pasay, at Mandaluyong every now and then and a solo camping trip somewhere around Rizal.
Also for additional context lang din po; I studied how to drive manual motorcycles at the Honda Safety Center in Sucat so transmission isn't an issue for me. I'm sure I'll figure even a semi-automatic out. :)
But anyway, some help would be much appreciated. Salamat po in advance sa pagbasa at pagtulong! :D

2024.04.24 23:27 Donalbain1080 Looking for my next bike

Preface: I'm 6'4", 280lbs, built dense, not so much fat and pudgy, just so yall have an idea.
I'm looking for some suggestions on my next bike, I have some idea of what I'm looking for, but with the way I'm built, most bikes I'm into seem like they would be small and uncomfortable for me.
I'm looking for something sporty and fun to ride in the back roads, yet comfy-ish on the highway like to ride to work. Im looking more so at cruisers as they fit me better, but some of them get too big and heavy. I'd like a bike that feels like it has character, like a HD rumbles and vibrates your teeth out and leaks out of every orifice, but I'm not a HD fanboy. I'm open to other options or opinions.
I like the idea of v4 cruisers like a magna, vmax, royal star, etc, as they are lighter and pack a punch, but seem like they would be too small for me. A muscle bike like the yamaha warrior 1700 seems nice but the muscle bikes have so small of tanks I'd have range anxiety, and lord knows if they can corner.
Budget of around 2k to 6k
Years prefered: 1980 to 2010
Previous bikes I've had with pros and cons: 1. 2001 yamaha vstar 650 - what I learned on - was small for me - decent power (learned later it came with a tuner 😂) 2. 2001 HD sportster 1200 - fun to ride - made good noise and had character - still too small for me 3. 2006 Suzuki vstrom 650 - fit me good - good power - kinda boring to ride, had no character - thought I would do more adv riding but didn't
Thanks yall

2024.04.24 04:38 ShiroAbesPants Shinobu Kandori interview with Bull Nakano (2021) english recap

- Bull introduces her guest as "LLPW-X president Shinobu Kandori", who is both surprised and delighted by this, as it's a refreshing change from the usual "Mr. Women's Wrestling" spiel she gets for most interviews. Bull says that her nickname for Kandori has always been "Kan-chan". Bull then immediately brings up their chain death match and Kandori reacts like "whoaah, aren't you at least gonna buy me dinner first? Can't we chat a bit?"
- Bull asks if Kandori remembers the date of their famous 1994 chain death match (this was actually filmed on the anniversary) and Kandori tries to bluff but gets caught out by Bull. Kandori says that if they had a kid at that time, they'd be grown ass adults by now. Bull starts to say that when two wrestlers have a great match like that, it's like having a kid, and Kandori is like "ummm WHAT?" and laughter ensues. Kandori says it's the most memorable match of her career, and that she still remembers it like it was yesterday, then Bull cuts her off and says to save the story for later because she prepped other questions first (lol?). Kandori is bewildered by this sudden change in direction.
- Bull asks how Kandori got into pro-wrestling. At the time, Kandori was on the Japan women's judo team, and was training for the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, where women's judo was being held as an open event (it would be added as an official event in 1992). Kandori says she didn't actually begin studying judo until 9th grade, which is a very late start for competitive players.
-She went to an all-girls high school with no judo program, so she had to join a local private dojo. She competed successfully in nationals and worlds while training out of this small local dojo, but came to a point where she had to choose between continuing as an amateur or starting a conventional career. Kandori says that the latter was no good because "I've always had this personality" and emphasizes her spiky bleached blonde hair. She felt she could do judo until Seoul, but doing it for four more years afterwards seemed like it might be a challenge. She was thinking about becoming an instructor, but her judo friends started suggesting she should do pro-wrestling, which was booming at the time.
-Kandori, of course, considered herself a legit martial artist (which she was) and thought wrestling was a bunch of BS. While preparing for her final judo tournament, her judo friends heard about the upcoming launch of JWP and sent in a resume without her knowledge. She later got a call from the president of JWP and wasn't sure what was going on at first, but when she heard how much money she could make, it was a done deal.
- Kandori initially did pro-wrestling for a few years before going "freelance" in a story too complicated to explain here. It was during this downtime that Kandori realized that she had the pro-wrestling bug. She cites JWP (and NJPW) trainer Koutetsu Yamamoto as the person that changed her perspective on wrestling. Kandori talks about finding great joy in bumping (ukemi in Japanese, breakfalls), because ukemi are big part of judo training that judoka never get to use - ("They're useless! You only use them when you lose due to being thrown!")
- Bull says that learning to bump is scary, and Kandori waves her off because there's only two ukemi styles - front and back. In judo, they have to practice them from all sorts of wild angles, so it's a lot more complicated. I'm not sure about this, but I -think- Bull then ribs Kandori like "For someone who liked bumping so much, you sure didn't take many big ones..." Kandori says she trained for six months before debuting. They go over old school JWP hierarchy a bit, which is complicated but basically the very first to sign (ie Kandori, Rumi Kazama) had slight seniority over the first official 1986 trainee group (ie Ozaki, Kansai, Suzuki).
- Kandori talks vaguely about her "freelance" period, where she left JWP but was still contractually obligated to work for only them, where she tried to set up the deal with Chigusa, lawyers got involved, etc. She says she had a strong image of Zenjo, and imagined that she would be facing amazing heels like Dump Matsumoto, but by the time she was free , Dump had retired "things were kind of... bad over there" with a bunch of random American wrestlers running around (she's referring to the famously dire 88-89 era of Zenjo). They talk about the split of JWP into LLPW and...JWP. Bull mixes up the two JWPs, and Kandori corrects her but makes the exact same mistake and lols ensue. Kandori says that once she found out that new groups would formed, she saw an opportunity to work with other promotions and joined up with LLPW.
- Kandori talks about the somewhat infamous Jackie Sato shoot, in which Sato was injured and retired soon after. The narrative at times has been that Kandori took it upon herself to beat up the much more senior Sato in the middle of a match. Kandori disputes this, and says that Sato was more than a willing participant, and was trying it on with Kandori just as much as the vice versa. Kandori says that she got a bit carried away with it once it started, but that the injury was actually due to a complete accident during a lariat spot. She says that back in the day, there were a lot of "scary guys" around wrestling (winkwink), and after the match one such "scary guy" came up to her yelling, and put her in a room by herself. She was a bit worried at that point, but in the end they were just keeping the two apart.
- She talks about one source of the friction between her and Sato as involving an injury Kandori suffered in practice. She went to the hospital and was told to rest, but management (of which Sato was a part) chewed her out for over-exaggerating the injury, picking up a needless hospital bill, etc. At some point while chewing her out, Sato made a comment along the lines of "we didn't worry about this kind of injury in Zenjo" (ie "you're being soft"). Kandori was baffled by this, as she did actually competitive combat sports where this was definitely considered a hospital visit.
- Kandori talks about her decision to join LLPW when the original JWP disbanded. She tells a complicated story about how she was technically a free agent despite her contract with JWP still being in dispute. She had been talking a bit with Rumi Kazama, and liked the idea of a wrestler being the company president. Eventually, she heard that the "new" JWP would have Devil Masami, which helped convince her to join with Kazama in launching LLPW.
-Kandori says that there was a lot of bashing at the time about LLPW having a female wrestler president (Kazama), saying they would be out of business in three months, etc., which only made her more determined to show them what's up. She talks about the tough early days, struggling to get sponsors due to being women running a company. She felt a lot of responsibility as the company's top star, and seeing upstart men's promotions easily get sponsorships while LLPW was ignored was a frustrating experience. Kandori says that they bridged the gap with potential sponsors by becoming more involved in social contribution activities (such as cancer fundraisers, etc). She talks about how in the early days, LLPW's office space and dojo space was the same, so they had to put the ring away during office hours and then set it up again to practice, over and over. There was an upside to this, however, as LLPW's roster became the best ring crew in the game.
- Kandori talks about the beginnings of interpromotional era of the 90s. While greeting various company presidents backstage at a show, someone suggested "Hey, why don't you fight Hokuto?" and she realized that this could be an updated version of the Nagayo match that never happened. Bull asks if Kandori thought this was a chance for LLPW to compete with Zenjo, and Kandori insists that she was under no delusions that her new company would be any threat at this point. Kandori says that looking back, she feels like the IP deal worked out all right for LLPW in the end.
- They move on to their famous 1994 chain death match.. Kandori says that she had seen the photos of the Bull/Aja cage matches several years prior, and had been wanting to try something like this with Bull once the companies started working together. Kandori says that when she saw Bull in action, there was immediate professional respect ("This person has -it-"). Kandori says that when a chain match was decided, she was initially concerned because "chain matches tend to suck", and that there was a lot of effort put into thinking of things they could do to make it more exciting.
-Bull says that from her perspective, she had been working in the WWF when she got a call from the Zenjo office telling her "you're doing a chain match with Kandori", which caught her by surprise to say the least. She had never worked with Kandori or done a chain match before, but she decided to just YOLO it assuming it would all work out just fine. Kandori talks about how there a bunch of extra considerations that popped up, like having to be super careful not to get the chain tangled or wrapped around ropes/ringposts while going in and out of the ring - if one person went out between the 1st and 2nd ropes, the other one had to follow them exactly, for example.
-Bull says that she had to figure out how to use nunchaku with a chain on her wrist, which was no simple task. Bull says that she had to do a guillotine legdrop for the finish, but couldn't do it normally by stepping out and climbing the corner post because the chain would get hung up on the ropes. Both say that during the match itself, it was a challenge not to accidentally do something on autopilot that resulted in them getting tangled up somehow. Kandori says that even taking normal bumps was a challenge because there was a chance of landing on the chain and getting tangled. They talk a bit out their injuries in the match, a broken orbital for Kandori and broken collarbone for Bull.
- Bull points out that she went back to America after the match, and Kandori never got her win back. Kandori looks surprised and Bull says "...I guess I just reminded you about that part, huh?" to laughter. Kandori jokes that maybe she should ask for the favor to be returned now, in 2021. They then spend a loooong time talking about Kandori's political career, which is beyond my scope, so let's just call it here.

2024.04.23 20:53 StickBat101 In your eyes, Where do you rank your teams captain among your teams previous captains? Or if your team doesn’t have a captain, then what about your teams previous captain?

The NHL has seen some pretty impressive players have “C” places on their chest. While all great leaders they all lead in different ways, some were quite point getters, others were loud and physical.
Landeskog will forever be behind Sakic in Denver but what about Larkin in Detroit? is he fifth behind Steve Yzerman, Gordie Howe, Lidstrom and Zetterberg or further down? What about Marchand where they’ve had a ton of great leaders in Boston? Or McDavid in Edmonton? Does he need cups to be up there with Gretzky and Messier, or is it Messier and then Gretzky? Is Tavares behind Armstrong, Sundin, Keon, Gilmour, Sutter and Clark? Montreal has had so many greats, does Suzuki make the top Five even if he gets a cup? Is Toews the best Blackhawk ever? Will Sid always be second to Mario, or when he passes him in points will he then be number one? He already has more cups.
