Chicken Milanese & Lemon- Caper Sauce with Pizzeria Salad
It is exactly what it looks like… a bland salad with a breaded chicken breast. I love Blue Apron, but this was so bad. The salad was bland, it was very basic but somehow stilled required a whole kitchen of dishes and utensils .
This meal would not have been worth the regular price for me, and was definitely not worth the “craft” upcharge.
We have not so great dinners from time to time, which I’m good with - comes with any subscription meal service. However, paying almost $15 extra per meal for one of the worst options I’ve had.

2024.04.28 23:17 radandtired "Not a scary personal experience"

According to my understanding, this subreddit is meant for fictional horror stories. I've seen many authors there who advertise their books and openly state that their stories are literary fiction, such as Blair Daniels. That's why I don't understand why my fictional story was removed, even though it was told in the first person.
Over 70 years ago, something ominous made its home in our woods
My name is Milena and I'm currently 83 years old. I'm here to tell you an old, strange story, which will also be quite lengthy, so consider yourselves warned. Frankly, this is a story best told at night, where the boundaries between reality and the realm of legend blur, and the faces of listeners are illuminated by the flickering glow of the bonfire. But well, we live in the age of internet. Yes, I know, you're not here to listen to an old person's kvetching. Let's move on to my story then.
My parents lost their lives in the Auschwitz concentration camp when I was only 2 years old. I didn't remember them, so even though I envied other children for having parents, I couldn't really miss them. I was raised by my grandparents in a remote village, nestled near the woods somewhere in Poland. Life was quite simple there. I was an unproblematic kid, and I gladly lent my hands to assist my grandparents in tending to their flock of chickens and cows. I had a small group of good friends, with whom I used to play outside for hours, exploring nearby fields and woods. That was, until the woods became a forbidden zone. Because strange things started to happen in our once calm, boring village.
It began with the disappearance of a man simply known as Wiesiek, a figure both familiar and shadowed. He was a middle-aged man, often seen intoxicated and without a permanent home, occasionally taking refuge in people's sheds without asking for permission. We all heard certain rumors about him. Apparently, during the Soviet occupation, he was labeled an 'enemy of the state' and subsequently deported to Siberia. After spending some time there, he was eventually granted amnesty and returned to our village a couple of years after World War II concluded. However, he seemed different upon his return, never quite the same as before. Some speculated that the harsh experiences had taken a toll on his mind, as he often rambled about strange creatures straight from the darkest folk tales, which were supposedly lurking in the Siberian taiga. Most people avoided him. It's sad, but I can't say that anyone was devastated by his disappearance. He didn't have any family, and no one seemed to care about his fate, whatever it may have been. The police were involved, of course, but we never heard of any resolution.
However, it was a different story with Krystyna. As a young, beautiful mother, she had garnered the care and concern of many. So when she, too, vanished, the entire community mobilized in search of her. The woods became the focal point of their efforts. Yet, all that was ever unearthed was a single shoe belonging to her, discovered deep within the forest, far from the beaten paths frequented by nature enthusiasts and mushroom pickers. Some people speculated that there was a bear or a pack of wolves residing somewhere in our deep, beloved woods. While not entirely implausible, such animals typically leave traces of their presence behind, yet none were found. Then, a strict ban on playing in the forest and its immediate vicinity was imposed on us kids.
Over the next few months, two more people went missing: a teenage boy and an elderly woman. They too were last seen in close proximity to the woods, which had now fallen out of favor with us. None of them were ever found, despite the intense efforts of our community and the less intense efforts of the authorities. I wondered about the origins of the strange rumors that started circulating in our village. Who started them, and why? Was it because Wiesiek disappeared first? Maybe some people took his stories more seriously than they were willing to admit. You see, it was the '50s, and our village was nearly forgotten by everyone, even by God himself. Many folks lacked education, and some couldn't even read. Back then, everyone was deeply religious and superstitious. As a child, I caught snippets of conversations that gave me a vague sense of what people of our village were thinking about all this. It might seem silly now, but it didn't back then.
One night, I overheard my grandparents' conversation. My grandpa was telling my grandma about something he heard at the only bar in our village. Apparently, the men were out hunting when they stumbled upon strange symbols carved into the trees, filled with a red substance. My grandma immediately started reciting "Zdrowaś Mario, łaskiś pełna...", a well-known prayer meant to shield her from all evil. Later, my best friend, a girl named Kasia, told me that her parents were once discussing the discovery of multiple traces of bonfires spotted in the woods. Then, there was the thing that stirred my imagination the most, making it difficult for me to fall asleep for a long time. One Sunday after mass, while I was waiting outside the church for my grandparents, I overheard a conversation between three elderly women. One of them lived very close to the edge of the forest. She mentioned that due to her struggle with insomnia, she often sat by her open window at night, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the sounds of nature. Several times, she heard something that immediately made her shut the window and hide under her quilt. It was a prolonged, high-pitched scream that pierced the ears, rising rapidly before abruptly cutting off. She described it as sounding like the call of some demonic entity summoning its brethren. After a moment of silence, all three of them simultaneously crossed themselves, shook their heads, and went their separate ways.
With those and a handful of similar clues, my friends and I were able to piece together the haunting picture: Wiesiek was right after all. A sinister presence lurked in the depths of the Siberian taiga, and it followed Wiesiek to our village. It claimed him first, along with the other missing souls, to satiate its hunger. During long, warm summer evenings, we sat around a bonfire and reminisced about the stories of dark mythological creatures that our parents and grandparents had once told us. There was Licho, a one-eyed creature resembling an old, gaunt woman. It was said that it wanders the world, seeking places where people live happily, only to bring upon them all sorts of misfortunes, hunger, poverty, and diseases. When someone deceives Licho, it follows them, always behind their back, glimpsed out of the corner of one's eye, relishing in tormenting its victim. We all agreed that it's something that could've happened to Wiesiek. Or perhaps he was seized by a strzyga, a female demon with bird-like talons, feeding on blood. We could have speculated for hours, devising theories, each more drastic than the last. While it was obviously tragic that people had vanished, the circumstances were somehow...exciting. At least for us kids. Something was unfolding—something mysterious and sinister—and it ignited our imagination. Filled with anxious anticipation, we waited to see what would happen next.
But...nothing happened. No one else disappeared. Time passed, and gradually, the villagers began to forget. For those who lost their loved ones, the pain lingered, of course. Yet, as the years went by, the wild theories faded into distant memories, becoming more absurd as we grow older and smarter. When I was 18, I left my home village to pursue education. Life under the communist regime was difficult. Most people were poor, and there were no prospects for young people eager to achieve something greater. So, like many other Polish people, I decided to emigrate. I would occasionally visit my grandparents, but after they passed away, there was nothing that drew me back to Poland. I had made new friends and started my own family in Sweden. I lost contact with my childhood companions.
However, as one grows older, distant memories begin to resurface. Childhood becomes an idealized realm of happiness. Sentimentality blooms, beckoning a yearning for the embrace of ancestral grounds. For this reason, I decided to visit my home village. Considering my age, it was likely to be the last time I would tread upon those old paths, embrace the flavors and scents once intimately known to me, and hear the melody of my native language. And as I thought, so I did. I spent a week in Poland during what was supposed to be a month-long stay, when a quite unexpected encounter occurred. I was slowly strolling through the village, which I could barely recognize anymore, when suddenly, from behind me, I heard an old, frail voice:
"Milena? Is that you? I heard that you came back..."
I turned around and saw an elderly, hunched woman with a flowery scarf on her head. I locked eyes with her weathered, wrinkled face, adorned with large, piercing blue eyes. A wave of sudden recognition washed over me.
"Kasia? No way!" I exclaimed, taking her fragile body into my arms.
She invited me into her modest home, where we spent several hours sharing stories about the most significant events from our long lives. I won't bore you with the details, but I'll mention that unfortunately, Kasia's life turned out to be much less fortunate than mine. She never left our village. Later, like old women often do, we delved into the treasure trove of our oldest childhood memories.
"Do you remember those missing people from the '50s? That darn Wiesiek. We couldn't believe it." She spoke with a voice brimming with disapproval, her head gently shaking in disbelief.
I didn't understand exactly what she was referring to. I hadn't been interested in the affairs of my village after emigrating, but I remembered that particular time and our wild speculations. So I asked her to elaborate. The story I heard from her made my hair stand on end.
No, no more disappearances occurred, and as I mentioned, the incident faded from the community's memory. Until the '90s came. It was autumn. A man was working in the forest, chopping wood, when suddenly, from the somber depths of the forest, emerged a strange, unfathomable figure. It was a very old man, incredibly dirty, dressed only in a hastily woven cloak of branches and leaves. Madness lurked in his eyes. He walked bent over in half, as if in great pain. When he saw the woodsman, he only managed to wheeze a plea for help before losing consciousness. As you've probably guessed, it was Wiesiek. He was taken to the hospital, and then questioned by the police in the presence of a psychiatrist. His tale was as fantastical as it was unsettling, and it made headlines, so I'm surprised it never reached me before.
The doctors concluded that Wiesiek was suffering from a severe mental illness. His affliction reached its zenith during his exile in Siberia, where he endured constant starvation in addition to being forced to work beyond human strength. He was plagued by dreadful visions of strange, ancient figures inhabiting the taiga, peering out from behind trees, whispering maddening, crimson secrets into his ears. These creatures spoke of an old era when they coexisted with humans, bestowing peace upon their worshippers in exchange for regular offerings of blood. Yet, with the advent of Christianity, the offerings ceased, and their wrath was awakened. They were hungry with a primal, insatiable appetite, intolerant of defiance. Wiesiek believed that upon leaving Siberia, the haunting visions would subside. His hopes proved to be in vain. His demons pursued him, ever more resolutely demanding restitution for centuries of neglect, wrought by faithless humanity. He attempted to drown out their voices with alcohol, but it proved futile. Thus, one day, he resolved to heed their call. He fled into the unexplored depths of the forest, where he crafted a makeshift shelter for himself and plotted to make his first sacrifice. Krystyna's abduction was not difficult. She was alone in the forest, gathering wild berries, when she was struck unconscious by a heavy branch and dragged to his new lair. Then, following the instructions echoed by alien voices in his twisted mind, he sacrificed her body in the intricate, blood-soaked ritual. The ceremony also included carving specific symbols into the bark of trees and filling their lines with the victim's blood. Well, this accounted for one of the rumors I had heard in my childhood.
Unfortunately for our village, the yearning of the ancient beings did not cease. They wanted more. So Wiesiek obediently provided two more victims, believing that his suffering would finally end, and the voices would fall silent. To his astonishment, after the third sacrifice, he was finally left alone. But his relief was tinged with darkness, as he was made to understand clearly that the hunger had been only temporarily satisfied. It was not the end.
However, there was one demon that never left his side: the consuming sense of guilt. He chose to remain in the woods, recognizing he no longer belonged among ordinary folk. He sustained himself by foraging from the forest's abundant resources. While winters could be harsh, they were no worse than in Siberia. He lived for many years, relatively undisturbed. Why did he decide to emerge from his hiding spot after so long? His explanation was straightforward: the voices, the terrifying creatures—they had returned, seeking his assistance once again. He asserted that he would rather be confined to a psychiatric hospital for the remaining short span of his life than be forced once again to harm another human being. He passed away a few months later.
Well, although this whole story was so shocking, it still made some sense. Minds ravaged by illness possess the capacity to interpret reality through a lens divergent from that of sound minds. Sometimes, this leads to terrible crimes. This was neither the first nor the last instance of its kind. That's exactly what I thought when Kasia finished speaking. And I probably wouldn't have given this matter much more thought if it hadn't been for one thing.
When night fell and I returned to my rented room, I decided to spend a few moments on the balcony, letting the warm, summer air envelop me. The village was settling into sleep. It seemed so peaceful and idyllic. Ahead of me, I could see the forest, still standing despite the passage of time and human activity. A light breeze rustled the treetops. I closed my eyes. Then, carried by the wind, came words spoken in a clear whisper. As a matter of fact, it was one word, repeated over and over, unmistakable from any other:

2024.04.28 14:57 pohltergiest Grinding up Fuji

Grinding up Fuji
We woke at dawn, having slept quite well. I crawled out of the tent to see a dawn walkers, scowling. I'd scowl too if I was an old ass dawn walker. Whatever. We packed up and got going to avoid anyone giving us grief, even before 6am we were on the road. And it was good, as even at 6am, it was getting warm in the sun. The forecast was for 28 degrees where we were, that wouldn't do for a day of climbing!
Bryce nudged me to look up, and we were treated to an unfettered view of Fuji, blue and crisp against a light blue sky. A good omen to begin our work for the day.
We visited a 7-11 for breakfast as nothing else is open that early and Bryce managed to break the payment machine. The poor lady was trying her best to figure out the procure to clear the problem in a rather complex machine, coins are very common in japan and these machines operate at high speed, so she had to go through some diagnostic windows to make it happen. Bryce turned red with embarrassment as she pulled out a small mountain of coins he had dumped in, but when she pulled out the toothpick to pry out the problem he turned as purple as his hair. Honestly from an engineering perspective, a public facing machine in a 24hr chain that can't handle a piece of wrapper that got in the change is surprising to me. I would think the machine could handle ejection of non-coin items. At the very least I was glad I got to see the inner workings of one of these machines, they're mesmerizing how quickly they operate.
After sunscreen and eating a breakfast of coffee, a smoothie, and a peanut pastry and a strawberry pastry, we were off. The peanut butter here is "peanut cream" and is more sugar than anything, the strawberry pastry was a straight up eclair masquerading as "food". Honestly this country survives off empty carbs, if people didn't have small portion sizes I don't know how anyone would manage their weight.
Our first destination was Tanuki lake, the first lake we'd see in a string. There are the famous Fuji Five Lakes, but I thought I'd be extra cheeky and plan for six. Our mapping app took us up through back roads between town areas, which mercifully kept us in the shade as we ground up the hill. Lake Tanuki would be half of the grind for the day, so it was a long one. I wanted to see the waterfall nearby, but my brain quickly turned to mush from the climbing. We generally ride at the pace I can handle, which means I always suffer at the same rate (though faster all the time!) I didn't have many thoughts aside from various curses and worries of the temperature rising.
We came across a temple complex with many administration buildings, apparently the head of a sect. I wonder how many Buddhist and Shinto sects there are in Japan? We've seen the head of a few sects, I suppose it takes a lot of coordination to keep it all running. These buildings were all modern but had many extremely large halls that looked like they could hold thousands. Lots of residence looking buildings too, maybe a place where clergy come to meet? I haven't even the slightest clue how religious administration works here.
The main thing to look at was of course Fuji, each new view showing a different angle with a new dressing of clouds. It seemed a cold wind was blowing from the north around the mountain and impacting a warm mass on the south, making a ring of clouds form. Otherwise it was just quiet cedars to keep us company as we went up and up and up.
Arriving at Lake tanuki, we stopped to dip our hands in the first lake. The clear blue waters reflected Fuji brilliantly and we could see why people love the lakes in this region so much. The beautiful mountains ringing the back side of the lake were the perfect opposition to Fuji looming in the distance. This lake had many people fishing, we watched one man pull in a medium sized fish. Looked fun.
The second lake was going to be nearly as much climb as the first, and I was a little nervous heading into a national park that we wouldn't find food to eat. We stopped and got some food bars and other things to eat at a park later, but some hours later we got up on the high plateau that rings the north side of Fuji and found, of course, well developed tourist areas to stop at. Bryce picked out a local beer and I picked out a custard, seeing that they were serving locally made cream products. We also saw they had ice cream, and when I saw it was local I made sure we got the premium vanilla. Sure enough, it was the best ice cream we've had, amazingly creamy. Even better than the mt Aso ice cream, which we didn't think could be topped. The custard was second best, delicious and full of flavour. The beer though, followed the trend of a immature craft beer scene in japan. It's just not there yet. Most of what we've seen is beer made as a souvenir rather than a good product, like the beer made for a rollercoaster.
While we were enjoying our treats, we saw a flyer for a festival happening. I immediately recognized what it was, it was the Shibazakura festival, the flowers known as moss phlox in English. We simply had to go, the pictures of neon pink fields of flowers had me hooked. Lucky for us, it was on our path and not far up the road. The plateau here was open, burned to make land for cattle the same as Aso. We had no cover from the sun, but we also had a great view of Fuji to our right and to our left we could watch paragliders circling up the mountains like hawks on thermals. Then we saw hawks circling on thermals and thought we'd seen it all.
Cars were lined up for an awful long way on the highway as we approached the festival, a real shame for them. We on the other hand, just rode into the site and parked near the ticket gate. I figured it would be busy but it was heckin busy. We waited a while to buy a ticket and enter, and then got to see the fields. Beautiful beds of three shades of pink, as well as white, baby blue and lavender Shibazakura were there, as well as purple muscari and one flower I didn't catch the name of. Bryce and I had a capital time weaving around the beds, dodging folks taking photos. It was very hot in the sun so we didn't wait for the cute photo ops, but we got plenty of photos anyways. We were hungry for food at this point, so we got some fried chicken, a basket of long fries, and two kebabs. The long fries are around 20cm long and are extruded potato, kind of like how McDonald's makes theirs. Just, yenno, long.
Fuji lake two was next, this one having a shoreline composed of volcanic rock gravel. I was cooking by this point, so we went down to the shore and I took off my shoes and socks and waded a little bit to cool off. The rocks were very sharp so it wasn't very comfortable, but it did make my feet feel great. We agreed that lake Tanuki was better, however. Lake 3 was a little otherworldly, looking as if scooped out of the volcanic rock. We liked how nestled it was into the mountains, very secluded. Not many people at this lake.
Leaving lake 3 and heading towards lake 4, we finally found the end of the lineup for the flower festival. 8km of cars, totally blocking the highway for a huge area. I think the amount of cars on the highway outnumbered the parking capacity by many times. Maybe a shuttle service would be warranted, I can't imagine having a massive section of highway completely impassible is a good idea.
Lake 4 was beautiful, and our road went around the back of it, following the shoreline. We enjoyed the parallax of the trees, the lake and Fuji in the background, thoughts staying to good times at lakes at home. Folks paddling around in kayaks added to the general good mood. The road on lake 4 led through as a tunnel to our last lake, Kawaguchiko, the largest lake today. We felt relieved, having had gone up and down many times on the plateau and were ready for a break.
I wanted some kind of food and maybe a beer, so we found a souvenir shop selling local beer, a grape cider and big bags of chips with Fuji on them. I picked out a wasabi flavour, and we found a spot in the shade to relax as we had a few hours before our hotel check in. When have we had time to kill in the last two months? It feels like forever ago that my time hasn't been filled to the brim, every day. Here, we sat and talked Fuji Q, how the beer tasted like bacon and was mediocre like the rest, and also how wasabi on chips is a thumbs up. I laid my head on Bryce's lap and we cooled down in the breeze, I watched the trees fluttering in the wind and thought about the Chinese ideal of landscape beauty being a windy day. With everything moving, I can see the interest.
Heading to our hotel, we were very ready for a hot shower and a bath. Good grief we were filthy. Four days of biking in heat and humidity with no access to showers. We are certainly going to try to get laundry done in the go, it's just too hard on our skin to wear salty sweaty clothes to ride in for ten hours a day, multiple days in a row. We made do with lots of chamois cream today, but we'll need a better strategy. Luckily laundromats here are excellent and have the dryer settings not to ruin our biking clothes. While we eat, we think we can do laundry on the go too so we don't need to use dirty clothes when we're riding. Bryce thinks he can find us more places to shower too. We're gross, but mostly because we're not trying very hard.
Our hotel was in the middle of nowhere between town and mt Fuji, up another incline we didn't want. I was pretty crabby by the time we got there to find a modest hotel. We stopped our watches and I reeled as I saw the total ascent for the day, 1300m. No wonder I was tired! I just set a new personal best for climb two days earlier, and a PB for distance yesterday, does this mean I can try harder? I feel like someone who is tapped out shouldn't be able to string together pbs if they're giving it their all. I feel like I am, but I guess it's not a bad thing to do better than you expect.
The lobby was oddly large and empty, and the receptionist told us they didn't need our passports. That's a first, I thought it was law for them to take copies of our passports. Next, they have us an info card that essentially said that aside from the hotel onsen, there were zero amenities besides beer at $3.50 a can. When Bryce asked if the onsen was the curtain behind them, the receptionist and the manager who had popped out of the back room both eagerly pointed at my tattoo like a gotcha and both exclaimed that I would not be allowed. There are better ways to go about this. We went up to our room, me thoroughly displeased, to find they had put us at the end of the hallway on the third floor. The room is decently sized, but we found we had no bathtub to soak in, and now it was known that we have tattoos so no onsen. Fantastic. Now I wanted to rip heads off. When we went downstairs to get our bags, I asked if they had a luggage cart, and the lady looked at me like I was asking her to take her clothes off, she squinted and said no. Good grief. Bryce offered to be the one to ask if they had a private onsen later.
After I had some water, some of the meal bars, and a shower I was starting to feel less angry. I guess four days is enough riding to fray anyone's nerves, but Bryce gets anxious when I'm angry at people, worried I'm going to make a scene. It's a fair worry, I am the kind of person to make a point of things. This time, however, I was going to give peace a chance and instead just packed up laundry for later and we headed out for dinner. I found a great looking burger place that purported to have Australian burgers, it was a bit of a hike, but I thought it would be worth it. Biking up more hills before food was a tough pill to swallow for sure.
The burger place was popular enough that a man was working the parking lot, and the inside sure looked like a western kinda place. Everyone working was definitely Japanese, but the menu looked like someone from the west wrote it. The burgers came with fries, the usual cheeseburger double cheeseburger bacon lettuce tomato kinda stuff. A welcome reprieve from trying to sort through set meals and lame burgers for people who don't know better. These burgers, however, were fantastic. Juicy and well seasoned, they were pricey but worth it. Beef is extremely expensive here, most burgers are a blend of beef and pork or beef and... Things that are not beef. We've had some interesting hamburger here. We got extra fries and some craft beers, these beers we actually liked! We saw they were made in Belgium, but curiously had a note on the label about Quebec's recycling rates for bottles. Of course. We looked it up and it's a Japanese company bottling their stuff in Belgium to sell to Canada. No wonder we like it.
After dinner we went to the laundromat to get that over with. This place had dryers where we could select a lower temperature, perfect for spandex. It's still not good for them, but sacrifices need to be made to keep our sanity. I'm tired of stringing up clotheslines in hotel rooms already too small for us, I'll take the damage on the clothes to have clean and dry clothes to pack up. While the clothes were washing, we walked across the street to get some food for the morning, as the hotel both had zero on site food options, nor had anything nearby. We're thinking the hotel exists primarily for buses full of tourists staying as a package deal, and they get bussed somewhere else to eat as the busses are parked at the hotel overnight. We can't complain too much, we booked the hotel yesterday on the busiest week of the year and paid peanuts compared to other hotels. The location sucks, but the beds are pretty comfy and it's clean, so it's fine.
We headed back to the laundromat to have a few snacks and Bryce read while I wrote. A lot happened today, and I'm very tired. I will write more tomorrow. It's bedtime and whatever.

Exploring Thai Food: Yellow Curry

Introduction: When it comes to Thai cuisine, one dish that has captured the hearts and palates of food enthusiasts worldwide is Thai Yellow Curry. Bursting with flavours, this aromatic delight has an interesting history and a unique blend of ingredients that make it a standout dish. In this blog post, we'll take a deep dive into the origins, ingredients, spice level, global comparisons, potential health benefits, flavour profile, and the best way to enjoy Thai Yellow Curry.
Origins: Thai Yellow Curry, known as "Gaeng Garee" in Thai, has its roots in Thai and Indian cuisine. It was introduced to Thailand by Muslim immigrants from India, and over time, it evolved into the beloved Thai dish we know today. While it has Indian influences, Thai Yellow Curry has its distinct Thai character with an abundance of fragrant herbs and spices.
https://preview.redd.it/y8evxej9m0xc1.jpg?width=5472&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a716de7325809df6499d2bd087b6e3181a14dceb
Ingredients: The key ingredients in Thai Yellow Curry include coconut milk, yellow curry paste, chicken, or vegetables. The yellow curry paste is a blend of lemongrass, shallots, garlic, galangal, turmeric, and other spices, which gives it its vibrant hue and distinctive flavour. Vegetables like potatoes and carrots are commonly used, and it's often garnished with fresh coriander and crispy shallots.
Spice Level: Thai Yellow Curry is generally considered to be one of the milder Thai curries in terms of spice level. It offers a delightful balance of flavours, with a mild kick of spiciness that is well-tolerated by most palates. This makes it an excellent choice for those who want to explore Thai cuisine without the intense heat found in some other Thai curries.
Comparison to Other Curries: Thai Yellow Curry stands out in the world of curries due to its creamy texture, mild spiciness, and the use of fragrant herbs like lemongrass and galangal. It differs significantly from Indian curries, which are often tomato-based and have a different spice profile. The use of coconut milk in Thai Yellow Curry gives it a unique creaminess not found in other curries.

Health Benefits: Thai Yellow Curry isn't just a treat for your taste buds; it also offers some potential health benefits. The turmeric in the curry paste is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, while coconut milk provides healthy fats. Flavour Profile: The flavour profile of Thai Yellow Curry is a harmonious symphony of creamy coconut milk, earthy turmeric, zesty lemongrass, and aromatic spices. It offers a rich, mildly spiced, and slightly sweet taste that's simply irresistible.

Welcome to Celebrate! Saturday

This is the weekly hype thread, a place for you to share your excitement about in-game achievements, lucky drops, and upcoming projects. This is also a space for the community to celebrate you!
While the subreddit is already a positive, celebratory space, this thread is meant to be especially so. For those of you who might hesitate to post something to the subreddit, because you worry it might be too beginner, too redundant, too low-effort: it's not. Come share with us here!

(Note: this thread is not meant to replace posting directly to the subreddit. You are still welcome to do so!)

Non-exhaustive examples of things to celebrate:

  • Marrying your spouse!

If you want to share screenshots of your achievements, upload them to an image-sharing site like Imgur and drop a link in your comment.

This is also a thread where mods might lurk and offeaward prestige userflairs. These are animated icons that go next to your name as a way to celebrate particular achievements in the vanilla game. Note that posting in this thread doesn't guarantee you'll get the flair—you'll want to send us a modmail if you want to apply directly!

2024.04.27 05:02 AlohaDude808 Icarus Week 125 Update Free Laika Update

Icarus Week 125 Update Free Laika Update
Patch Overview: (April 25, 2024)
  • Those paying attention will know that in addition to our regular weekly updates, we bundle up some large features to deliver as 'named' updates. The latest update, Laika, brings all prospectors a ton of new animal-themed content, improvements, two new optional DLC packages, a bonus DLC operation and even more.
Laika was a Soviet space dog who was one of the first animals in space and the first to orbit the Earth. As the technology to de-orbit had not yet been developed, Laika's survival was never expected. She died of overheating hours into the flight, on the craft's fourth orbit.
Animals have been a part of our existence, sometimes in our lives they can at times even feel like the reason we exist. So we wanted to name this update after a loyal and brave dog, who perished because of us.
  • Laika is headlined by the new Mount Leveling system where Mounts can earn XP, Talent Points and base stat improvements while specializing with their own Talent Trees.
  • It's not just mounts, though. Through Snare Traps you can now capture and slowly win over some of Icarus' unique wildlife, including Wolves (both the forest and arctic variants), Hyenas and Wild Boar.
  • In addition, the new Sheep and Chickens can be ordered from the Orbital Workshop and the ability to take pets to and from other prospects has been introduced, so they’re no longer locked to one session and can be leveled up over multiple drops.
  • Our new DLC expand on this content, with a ton of troughs, beds, saddles and more in the Creature Comforts DLC and Dogs, Cats and Horses in Pet Companion pack. As a bonus for those who purchase both you can get the Zebra Rescue Mission DLC, which gives you the exclusive ability to train and raise Zebra’s as a new mount.
  • There’s a ton to catch up on, so hop in and have a read.

This Week: LAIKA Features
  • Animal Leveling and Talents: Mounts and Tames now gain XP and level up as they adventure with you and amble around at home base. These levels gained will improve their base stats such as health and stamina, but that’s not all...
  • Mount Talent Trees: Leveling up your pets will now also give them talent points to spend on their own talent trees. Every existing mount type in Icarus now has its own brand-new talent tree, along with all new tames and future mounts to be added. These will include a mix of base talents and bespoke ones for each different creature.
  • Mount Persistence: Your pets have now also got their customs clearance. You’ll now be able to transfer your pals between prospects, open worlds and outposts, done via the Orbital Exchange Interface (OEI) that you currently use to send exotics to space, and purchase workshop items from the planet. From here, you’ll be able to order a pickup for your Tame/Mount and send them up to orbit, where they can be accessed the same as a workshop item.
  • Mount Food Buff Rework: Just like players, Mounts and Tames can now have 2 active food buffs at any time and different foods will provide different improvements. This can be increased by unlocking the appropriate talent.
  • New Tameable Creatures: Certain creatures can now be tamed in Icarus. Wolves, Arctic Wolves, Hyenas and Wild Boars can all now be tamed and become a loyal companion, each with their own talent tree.
  • Taming Creatures: To tame one of the above animals, you’ll need to use the new snare trap system. These work when baited, and creatures you capture will slowly warm up to you over time, as long as you keep them warm and fed. Don’t expect a warm reception right away though, it’ll take a while for your new tame to stop being aggressive towards you and become docile.
  • We’ve also got two new creatures which are available for purchase in the Orbital Workshop!
  • Chickens: Chickens can be sent down from orbit and raised at your base, where they’ll make a hell of a racket along with produce eggs. Chickens will need to be kept fed, watered and warm - and if you meet all the requirements - will produce eggs roughly 2 eggs per day on Icarus. If you build a chicken coop (another new item) the Chickens will lay their eggs inside for easy collection, otherwise, they’ll drop them on the ground randomly.
  • Sheep: Sheep can also be sent down from orbit, where they’ll produce wool at roughly one full coat a day. You’ll need the new Shears to be able to gather the wool, and will need to keep your sheep fed and watered for it to produce wool for you.

This Week: Tameable Creatures List Has Expanded:
The list of tameable creatures has expanded considerably this week, so here’s a breakdown of each group and how to tame them:

  • "Rescued" as Juveniles: Moa, Buffalo, Terrenus, Tusker
The four original mounts are still captured and tamed the way you remember - by saving them as helpless orphans, and not thinking too hard about how they became one.

  • Captured with a Snare Trap: Wolf, Arctic Wolf, Hyena, Wild Boar
These four wild animals can be captured with the new Snare Trap, and require some careful nurturing and love to slowly win them over and turn them into a loyal companion.

  • Purchased and sent down from the Orbital Workshop: Chickens, Sheep, Cats, Dogs, Horses
Chicken and Sheep will be available right away in the Orbital Workshop to unlock and order for delivery to the surface so you can start raising a flock or herd of farm friends. *: Dogs, Cats and Horses are also available but require the Pet Companions DLC to access. You can train wolves for free, but you need to snare them. You can get the Terrenus horses for free via normal orphan training, the Horses in the DLC are cosmetic variants.

This Week: General Mount Improvements:
We’ve made extensive improvements and adjustments to Mounts and Tames in general, especially in their AI and behaviors:
  • Mount AI
Passive Mounts and Tames set to Follow will now try to evade combat when hurt
Fixed a bug where mounts weren't attacking when set to Defensive
Changed default Mount combat behavior to 'Defensive'
Fixed a bug where Moa weren't fleeing correctly when damaged
Added a tooltip above mounts and tamed creatures indicating their current behavior action
If Mounts and Tames get stuck when set to 'Follow', they will teleport to their leader after a period of time (if far enough away)
Added additional idle behaviors and animations for tamed creatures

  • Mounts / Tames General
Added level and name to tame/mounts death message
Rebalanced base stats of mounts, increasing the base health of Moa and speed of Buffalo. Still some variance but larger variance comes through talent selection
Added fall damage reduction as a baseline for all mounts and tames, preventing many accidental deaths
Added the Ranching Station, consolidating all mount and tame related recipes to a single bench
Mounts that have saddles or cargo now have items put into overflow bag when sent up to space
When mounts die carrying items, all the items are placed in their corpse, when skinning the items are added to not removed
If Mounts and Tames get stuck when set to 'Follow', they will teleport to their leader after a period of time (if far enough away)
Adding Ability to put any food in animal troughs, animals will eat it
Added water troughs that can be connected to water networks
Animal Feed can now be put in fridges / freezers

  • Non-Mount notable fixes:
Fixed electric wall light visual setup, now lights a much larger area
Adding in Latest Patch Notes Section on the Title Screen (so you can easily see a link to the latest patch notes)
Fixed Glass Roof Corner Pieces to shelter properly so they no longer leak Rain or Snow during storms
Bread and associated products now last 3 times longer before they spoil
Added additional Interior Wood Angled Wall pieces
Removed hail storms. Hail is now Torrential Downpour
Add new Biofuel Recipe that includes spoiled plants
Quick pass on all bench inventories, benches which are upgrades will have more slots than their lower tier counterpart

This Week: Known Issues and Frustrations:
We have been heavily playing the Free Laika update this week with no cheats to experience the game as players will. Myself (CEO) I have put over 80 hours this week into this update. This fits with our motto of games being "played not made". As a result a number of issues, frustrations and the need for quality of life improvements have shown up. We need to heavily test the resultant changes and fixes but these will be implemented in either next weeks update or in the weeks after that. They will be available on the experimental branch in a few days and be part of the Week 126 update a week from now. As always, we will be waiting for your feedback as to where to go with this as well.
  • Commanding your animals. We are looking at ways to "whistle" or access commands better, and make the UX for making them follow or stay better.
  • Mount modifiers displaying while riding them. Currently you see the mount health bar, but not its modifiers. The work has been done for this, but it needs to be carefully tested and will be in the next build we do.
  • Controlling your chickens. This can be a real pain, sometimes a source of hilarity. We looked as some simple fixes, but really we need new fencing options and egg collection deployable items to give more options than just the chicken coop. This will be something we investigate much more.
  • Pets sometimes get 'fixated' on a task, such as trying to eat from a particular trough even if there is one closer. You can often manually break them out of this by helping them complete the action - like manually giving them food/water or changing their set behavior and back again.
  • More agency for pet and mount control. Similar to the "follow" or "stay", we might add more buttons to enable/disable specific actions, and make it faster and easier to do so. We don't want to rush these changes in.
  • More animals that are tamable. This does involve significant expense for us, they need animations and sometimes other meshes. Let us know what you would like to see, and consider supporting us with DLC purchases so we can spend more money adding more mounts and companions to the game.
  • Camera issues with some mounts. Sometimes the external camera is in a weird position, or the position just is not good. This will be fixed and adapted in our next updates.
  • Lights on mounts not working properly when in player slots. This can be utterly infuriating, it is something we are working on a fix for as soon as we can.
  • Ways to breed animals especially things like chickens. This requires careful balance is something we need to think about a bit more. It might require special T4 (who knows, maybe T5) buildings. We will seek feedback from players, feel free to pitch ideas on Feature Upvote or in the forums
We identified much, much, more but hopefully this gives you some confidence that even where we have not got things right yet - that we are aware of it and will do what we can to address these issues going forward.

Coming Soon:
We often have content that has been partially or even fully made but hasn't made it into the live game yet. This allows us to keep up our weekly update cadence as well as still push out large updates of free content like this one. Also get the first peek at the content planned for our next major expansion - Dangerous Horizons.
Future Confirmed (FREE) We have a huge amount of future content planned, below is just some outlines of things we are preparing or even have ready for testing in some cases. This list is not exhaustive. Please consider buying supporter DLCs if you want to see even more.
  • Cave / Arctic Bats
  • New Mounts: Wooly Zebra, Redback, Blueback,
  • Workshop Guns: Shotgun, Rifle, Pistol
  • Turrets
  • Tree Respawning
  • New Creatures: Ghost Croc, Swamp Bird, Skulmut, Dibbo, Kiwi
  • Prometheus Part II Map Expansion
  • Icarus - In-Game Wiki
  • Biome specific crop growth, storms damaging crops
  • A "directors cut" hardcode mode, like actually a real one approved by Rocket not all this chill vibes stuff but a mode for real prospectors. That works on dedicated server. Yes Rocket wrote this! Nobody edit it.
Dangerous Horizons Expansion
Our next big expansion we promised at launch has been in development. Our last one, New Frontiers, we adapted with what worked and what did not from our initial game, and we plan to do the same with what is coming. This will be new content, as well as the concept of "Great Hunts". Expect a key focus on exciting and downright terrifying monsters to face as a seasoned veteran prospector.
  • Building Tier & Resource: Limestone
  • Curved & Diagonal Building Pieces
  • New Bosses: Hammer Head, Rock Golem, Swamp Ape, Ice Mammoth
  • New Biolab: New fully Customizable weapons
Disclaimer: I'm not a developer, just a fellow Icarus enjoyer. If you like receiving these weekly patch note updates, please like or comment below. Mahalo!

2024.04.27 03:35 babyxxpigeon17 A Niagara vacation

It was so terribly cold. Snow was falling, and it was almost dark, when out of the blue, my wife called me at work. "We're going to Niagara Falls for the weekend. I got us an awesome deal!"
We had both been working at our first "full-fledged" jobs for a year and had reached that moment after graduation when you suddenly realize you can't make that impact on the world your student enthusiasm once promised. At first, I just sighed. It was the dead of January, and I had already expended all my energy on a week of inconsequential stress. I just wanted to collapse on the couch for two days. Sarah felt a similar weary exhaustion. I could tell. Her tone was more hopeful than excited, but she had dreaded the routine we were sinking into and was trying her best to pull us free.
I looked to the ceiling and adjusted my telephone headset. At that time I was working at Stats Canada on the tele-query desk. I took a deep breath and, as convincingly as possible, said, "Sounds good." I don't think she bought it, but we went nonetheless.
This was Niagara Falls before the casinos when there was a very distinct off-season. When we got to the hotel, we were given the details of our "lovers' special". One dinner to be used either Friday or Saturday, two breakfasts, a roll of tokens for the arcade, 10% off some "4D" movie ride experience, and a 2-for-1 coupon to Max Tussaud's. I guessed it was Madame's nephew? We also got a bottle of sparkling wine in our room and chocolate treats on our pillows. I was impressed. It sounded good.
When we got into our room and saw the "bottle" of wine - basically an aeroplane-sized glass and half - and the chocolates - "fun wrapped" Oh Henry's left over from Halloween - we both started to laugh. The tone for two wonderful days had been set. We decided to cash in on our dinner coupon right away.
The restaurant off the lobby had hopes of being better. There were huge panoramic windows that promised a view of the gorge. Unfortunately, they had some winter moisture problems that day, and it felt like we were defrosting amid the dripping streaks and foggy patches. The decor was your standard booths and tables though the "romantic" lighting was unique. Dollar store battery-powered tea lights were lodged inside thick tumbler glasses and shed a muted pleasantness in a "what a great idea for a craft" sort of way. I had a feeling they were created by our waitress since she was the one who always seemed to be fussing with them. Only one other couple was in the dining room, so she attended to us immediately.
"Can I get you something to start?"
"Sure." "Thank you, that would be nice." We both responded simultaneously.
"And what would the lady like this evening?"
Sarah smiled at the flattery. "I think I'll have a glass of white wine." She glanced over at me to see my reaction. This was a subtle cue of the mood to follow. Diet Coke was usually the beverage of choice. She didn't normally drink alcohol. One glass numbed her nose and made her giggle far too easily. When she did drink, however, it meant she was comfortable with my company and open to anything to follow. I raised my eyebrows in a debonair way.
"And for the gentleman?"
"Do you have Foster's on tap?"
"Yes we do."
"I'll have a pint please."
Sarah smiled at the happy memories I invoked. At university, Foster's was my signature beer. It was at a time when Crocodile Dundee was a known name, and Australia was inexplicably cool. 15 cent buffalo wings and a pitcher of Foster's was the Tuesday night special at the London Arms pub. There the Classics Club would meet and, as a group, circle the wagons and drink ourselves into extroverts.
As soon as the waitress left, Sarah smiled at me. She reached out and held my hand across the table. With my gaze on hers, she slipped her foot from her shoe and slowly began sliding it up my pant leg.
"I got a pedicure this morning." She announced seductively.
I nodded and pretended I didn't notice her invitation. "What colour?" I asked.
"I'm not telling." She teased. "You'll just have to find out later." Her devious little smile was gorgeous.
"Mmmm. I can't wait."
When the waitress returned with our drinks, we immediately retreated to our personal spaces as if we had been discovered by the chaperone. Sarah opened the menu and began to salivate at the variety.
"Can we add an appetizer to the package dinner?" Her question seemed innocent enough.
"You're on the package?" Our friendly waitress disappeared, and we were no longer a lady or a gentleman. She ripped the menu out of Sarah's hand and took mine before I had even opened it. She then scurried to her podium and brought back a tattered, grease-stained, photocopied page that we had to share. We both burst out laughing.
The waitress was flustered that we were not as bothered as she was. "The drinks are NOT included!"
"What choices do we have?" I asked, expecting the usual chicken or fish. I had been on many packages before with my parents.
"Coffee or tea." The waitress snapped.
Sarah and I looked at each other in amused disbelief.
"I'll have coffee please." I didn't even flinch at the ridiculously limited package. I was eager to get my order in early.
"And I'll have the tea!" Sarah followed my lead. "Can I have some milk with that?"
"Yes." The waitress snarled.
"Fantastic!" I enthused.
"Yes, great! I'm glad we got the package, Honey." Sarah joked.
The waitress stormed off and returned sometime later with our lettuce-only salads drowned in Kraft's Italian dressing and our chewy chicken dinners, which she had thoughtfully allowed to cool. She tossed the plates on the table and left us to peacefully devour our deal. We didn't see her again until we requested the bill. For some reason, we found it amusing to leave a generous tip, which of course, defeated the purpose of the package, but we didn't care. It was fun.
The rest of the holiday was marred with similar off-season products and services. The wax museum was only half open, so we couldn't see the pop stars of the seventies. I didn't think it was a problem, but Sarah pouted playfully. She really wanted to see young Bowie. Meanwhile, the arcade was particularly stingy about spitting out coupons. So much so that Mike, the scraggly-haired repair guy, ended up escorting us from game to game and repairing the devices on demand. In no time, he was acting like an old drinking buddy. He joked and laughed, then, out of the blue, revealed that working at the Niagara Falls Fun Centre wasn't his career choice, that his dream was to be part of a travelling carnival. He desperately wanted to see more of the world, he explained and socialize with a greater variety of "wildlife." Mike winked at Sarah to punctuate his meaning, then began advising her on which games to play.
Sarah was partial to Skee ball and clearly had career potential in the sport, but Mike quickly pointed out that the token-to-coupon payout was not the best. In a furtive whisper, he revealed that The Storm Stopper was your best bet, provided the arcade had left it on its original factory settings. He assured us the ones here were "cool." The game had lights that ran around the outside in opposite directions and you had to hit the button at just the right spot to win. It looked impossible, but Mike was right; if you calculated tokens in versus coupons won, it was the best deal. It only took a little practice to win a minor jackpot every 5 or 6 times.
We would cheer each win as if Toronto had won the Stanley Cup. I would give a quick fist pump and a full lung "Yes!" while Sarah would jump up and down screaming, "WhoooHooo!" Of course, in the end, when we cashed in, "Mike's secret" only bumped us up from a key-chain flashlight to a "deluxe" nail beauty set. Mind you, it did come complete with clippers, scissors, a file AND a cuticle scraper. Not only that, it was all neatly packaged in a paisley-patterned pink and green plastic vinyl case. Mike was so pleased to give us our prize and to be honest, we were thrilled to win it if only to see his broad chicletted smile. It was more of a trophy than a grooming set.
That night, I made reservations for us at a fancy Chinese food restaurant - the Bamboo Garden. When we arrived, we had half-expected renovations of some sort. Instead, the place was immaculate. Gentle pools teeming with goldfish highlighted the epic black and red Ming dynasty decor. Real candles flickered on crisp white tablecloths. Again, the restaurant was virtually ours. The reservations on my part were entirely unnecessary. In fact, as soon as we entered, they knew us by name and guided us directly to our table. A live lounge piano caressed the air, its notes danced vaguely around familiar harmonies until finally, as if prompted by our presence, a song emerged immediately accompanied by the velvet voice of oriental karaoke. It was our song remastered

For anyone wondering how to do this, instead of spending hours like myself.
  1. Craft the Nutriouse feed from Mob utils. Feed that to chicken. Get golden Egg.
  2. Find Beach biome, not any beach you see, you have to find the Beach as in biome.
  3. Put down 5x5 dirt blocks, hoe them, plant the egg, wait for turtles.
  4. Feed turtles sea grass, you get that from shearing sea grass underwater.
  5. Silk touch the eggs, can use amethyst tip from silent gear.
celebrate.

Chapter Three:
(Dawn)
The ride to my Craftsman bungalow in Brighton Corner didn’t take but 10 minutes, which wasn’t bad from East Bayside. I’d never been able to afford living on the peninsula and after several years of renting in Deering, Woodfords, and the Back Cove, I finally found a house on June Street that was perfect.
From the moment I saw it, I knew the home had everything I wanted, from a gated yard bordering a small patch of woods to a front yard garden just waiting to be nursed back to health through careful attention and love.
“Wow. You’ve got quite a pretty little house there. I can only imagine what it costs to rent,” Frankie said, eyes widening as we pulled into the driveway.
June Street was tucked away on Portland’s west side not far from Shay’s, one of the less popular food store chains that was doing all it could to survive the onslaught of Grocery Basket and Henneford Supermarket (Hennie’s as the locals sometimes called it).
Trees surrounded the entire street that only had about four houses on it, counting mine.
A great-horned owl hooted in the oak tree that leaned a little closer to my covered porch every year.
“Oh, I don’t rent. This pretty little parlor is all mine,” I said, beaming. “Well — it’s the bank’s until I pay it off in 25 years, but semantics.”
Frankie turned to me and whistled.
“Owning property in Portland before 30? Who did I go home with tonight? A trust fund child From Away?”
I snickered.
“Partially right. I am From Away. I definitely don’t have a trust fund. But how do you know I’m under 30?”
Frankie Dee shrugged and got out of my car.
“I dunno, bub. Just always been good at guessing ages. You still seem like you’re a couple of years away from that threshold.”
Walking around the vehicle and leaning on its hood, I crossed my arms and raised an eyebrow.
“Flatterer. Save your compliments. I already took you home, didn’t I? And don’t tell me you’re one of those women who think life is all downhill once your age no longer starts with a two.”
I saw Frankie eyeing my garden full of sprouted daffodils, perky and defiant of any remaining April snow or chill. I loved that about those stubborn little flowers.
For a moment, Frankie bore a more melancholic expression as she stared at nothing in particular.
“Ha. No, life isn’t all downhill after 30. Age doesn’t mean much to me. In my eyes, there’s just work that needs to be done. Whether you’re 20 or 60, the work ain’t going anywhere.”
Holy hell, who killed this woman’s spirit? I thought, elbowing my new friend in the ribs, which elicited a small stammer of surprise and was quickly followed by a breathless giggle.
“Go back to complimenting my house,” I said. “I’ve put a lot of work into it.”
Frankie Dee snorted and looked over at the two-story home I’d pumped more blood, sweat, and cash into than I cared to admit. It was still an almost 70-year-old home, but the fresh grey paint I added last fall still looked pretty damn good.
“I like how your window frames are red to match the front door,” Frankie said, taking time to look over my house. “And the little stone steps painted like flowers leading up to the front door are really cute. This place just seems so. . . whole, ya know? Carefully put together piece by piece.”
Well, shit. I’d jokingly told her to compliment my home, and she’d done just that. Only her words had gone past inspiring pride and instead left even me a little emotionally hamstrung as I fought a growing blush.
Still, there was a part of me that enjoyed the attention on a place I’d worked for years to fix up. A human being was here right in front of me appreciating something I’d busted my ass to make nice. Month after month of YouTube tutorials, trips to House Depot, and weekend warrior projects that almost left me feeling a little too white picket fence at times.
And Frankie’s praise wasn’t just internet comments that felt good for a few minutes and then vanished like cotton candy accidentally dropped into a puddle. They were warm words that were being said to my face, by a really cute girl that I wanted to bring inside and kiss.
Instead of doing that, I found myself asking, “You want to see the back? I’ll show you my kid.”
Frankie Dee just stood there blinking.
“You have a kid?”
I nodded, grinning mischievously and pointing with my chin. We walked over to a gate on the side of my house as motion lights kicked on, bathing us in pale beams. A six-foot wooden privacy fence surrounded my backyard on the sides. It transitioned to ranch fencing and chicken wire on the side facing the woods.
My backyard wasn’t huge by any means. A small chicken coop I’d built from scrap wood a neighbor gladly gave me sat close to the house. I bruised my thumbs so much that weekend that I had trouble moving them for days afterward. And the curses I hissed that day probably killed at least a rose bush or two elsewhere in the neighborhood.
Frankie followed me as more motion lights kicked on, and a small bleating sound echoed from the back porch. That’s when she came into view, half running/half hobbling in the way my kid often did.
A black and white pygmy goat that didn’t even come up to my knees bleated happily and bumped her head into my leg. She was entirely snow-colored except for splotches of black on her front legs and over her eyes.
“Frankie Dee, I want you to meet Billie,” I said, picking up the 17-pound goat.
This was her true test. I watched for signs of disgust or flinching, but in two seconds Frankie’s face went from curious about the noise to full-on adoration of my fluffy child.
“Oh my goodness! She’s just a little guy!” she cooed and came over to pet her.
Billie wasn’t shy. She sniffed and lightly nibbled on Frankie’s fingers with her lips. She only had back teeth, so it was actually difficult for her to bite you unless you stuck your fingers in her mouth like a moron.
Frankie oo’ed and aw’ed over my goat for another couple of minutes before she looked up at me with a sneer.
“Wait. . . Billie? As in, Billie the Kid?”
The grin that snuck over my lips was nothing less than pure goofball. And Frankie Dee loved every bit of it. I could tell by the way she shook her head looking at the ground.
“Come on. I’ll introduce you to the Fates,” I said, setting Billie down and walking my guest over to the chicken coop.
She followed and watched as I opened the latch and slowly unveiled three Buff Orpington hens who clucked a little but otherwise remained on their nests of straw and pine shavings, staring at us. Most of their feathers were a light gold color with their necks taking on more of a brownish hue. Their combs were as red as my front door.
“Hey there, ladies. Don’t mind me. Just showing you off to my new friend,” I said, letting Frankie peek in for a closer look.
“Oh wow! You’ve got some stout ladies in there,” she giggled. “Fresh eggs?”
I nodded.
“That, and they help control ticks and snakes in the backyard.”
My new friend turned to me and managed to fight her fluster just long enough to ask, “So, if I stay the night, does that mean I get scrambled eggs in the morning?”
I raised an eyebrow and asked, “Are you staying the night?”
She shook her head.
“With a stranger? Sorry, no. I don’t care how pretty she is. I’m not staying the night with someone I’ve known for less time than it’d take me to watch ‘Return of the King.’”
Leaning against the chicken coop, I batted my eyelashes at Frankie and said with the sweetest voice I could muster, “But what if I put on ‘Return of the King?’ Would you stay the night then?” It was almost cartoonish the way I asked with a leering smirk.
“Theatrical edition?” Frankie asked, sounding entirely serious.
“Yeah,” I replied.
“No.”
I frowned.
“Extended edition?” she asked, again appearing deliberate.
“Sure.”
“Still no,” Frankie said, laughing.
I shook my head and led the newest book club member inside my house after petting Billie some more.
My living room is wide open and consists mostly of a corner sofa and a small television perched on an antique chest I thought looked rustic.
A blue and white rug stretched out from under my couch for several feet before it surrendered to a hardwood floor.
In the corner, a petrified tree stump sits on a thin black rug. It’s covered in purple and silver candles that surround a tiny, hand-sized cauldron filled with tiny bones, smoky quartz, and crow feathers. The cauldron rested on a wooden case containing my Wise Goat Tarot cards. An incense holder carved in the shape of a raven sat on the very back of the stump.
The shrine immediately drew Frankie Dee’s stare, and I greeted my visitor with her second test of the night, watching her eyes for immediate disapproval. But I was greeted more with curiosity than anything as she turned to me.
“My shrine to The Morrigan,” I said, shrugging.
“Who is that?” Frankie asked.
“Celtic goddess of war and destiny,” I said. “I work with her most frequently.”
Frankie nodded slowly, looking back at the altar as she rubbed her chin. I couldn’t quite read her expression.
“You’re, what, Wiccan?” she asked.
I scrunched my face and shook my head.
“I prefer to just call myself a witch or a practicing pagan if you want a term that’s a little less halloween-ish,” I said, shrugging again.
Frankie Dee’s mouth is a straight line for a moment before she mutters, “fascinating,” in her best Hank McCoy impression. Though, I doubt that was her intent.
Walking over to the altar, I picked up one of the feathers from the cauldron and turned to face my new friend.
“I learned most of my starting craft practices from my grandmother. It drove my father mad,” I said fighting a flinch at imagining his voice. “But he can fuck off. I loved every moment I had with her and think about her each day I light these candles.”
My heart stirs anytime I get to talk about the craft. It feels like the right kind of defiance, and that pride swells with each episode of Dawn’s Divinations I record in the morning. My guest grew quiet as I talked.
And soon I’d have a column in the Portland Lighthouse-Journal, reaching a whole new audience of readers who will hopefully start asking bigger questions with their lives. My meeting with the paper’s publisher and managing editor tomorrow to sign the contract was the most important thing on my calendar this month.
Frankie took a step closer to my altar and smiled, putting a hand on my shoulder.
“You’re all fired up and passionate. Kind of adds a sexy new layer to the lady who took me home tonight,” she said with the full confidence of someone fully expecting to be kissed. I have no clue where she pulled it from, but it does things to me as I lean closer.
“Gotta say. You’re talking an awful lot of game for someone within smooching range,” I said.
Her eyes widened, and I watched the deer in the headlights look overtake a woman who’d only just managed to get a single flirtation out before receiving returning fire. Fuck, Frankie swerved between the lanes of “flirt” and “freeze” like a crazed driver, and all I wanted to do was throw her on the couch and climb on top of the blonde trapped in the full frenzy of gay panic.
With surprising strength, I watched Frankie Dee move her lips closer to mine. It was daring and a bold play for someone who I could paralyze with a stray smile. And yet, I got the feeling she wasn’t like that all the time. I sensed an audacious flavor of strength in this woman. She could waltz into any boardroom or public meeting and say things I’d have to practice for a week to not lose my nerve over.
It’s just pretty girls that do her in, I thought, taking a moment to appreciate the warmth and desire radiating from Frankie’s lips.
I closed my eyes and finally united our lips like I’d been wanting to since I first laid eyes on our newest book club member at the bar.
Trying not to sound cliche, I quickly realized Frankie was wearing cherry chapstick. And she was so soft and ready for me. The way she seemed to drink me in, the way she pressed her body against mine, and the way she groaned when I took her bottom lip between my teeth, all let me know it’d been a long time since anyone had done this to her. Was no one interested in this incredibly cute blonde, or had she simply been too busy to allow someone to treasure her?
Frankie Dee didn’t hesitate to let me take control of the kiss and set a tempo. The truth was, she seemed so grateful to have my lips on hers that I doubted she’d object to much in the moment.
I deepened the kiss and moved us over to the couch where Frankie let me lay her down and climb on top while she cupped my face in her hands. Warmth built in my core as she ran her fingers through my hair, found where I’d tied the bandana, undid it and then tossed the thin fabric aside so she could rub the back of my head and neck more freely.
All of that elicited a moan from yours truly, and Frankie’s body started to hum like the neon sign of a 24/7 diner.
Running her fingers over my ass and squeezing it, I felt a shiver ride halfway up my spine.
“If you want to do things like that, we’d best move this to the bedroom,” I hissed as Frankie Dee started to kiss my neck, and moisture built in the other place I wanted her lips to be.
“Uh. . . huh,” she managed in between kisses when we fought for air.
We stumbled through the dim hallway, Frankie’s shoulder bumping the wall and threatening to knock over a photo of sunrise over Casco Bay.
And then we were on my queen bed, spread out over a red and black duvet. I looked into the hungry brown eyes of my partner for the night and found myself smiling, butterflies doing somersaults in my tummy. She didn’t even take a breath before pulling me down to nibble on my collarbone. In response, I moaned and pushed my pelvis into hers for harder contact, cursing the pants on Frankie that kept me from feeling her through the fabric.
Loud bleating from outside brought me back to reality as I sat up and cursed.
“I’m so sorry. I think I forgot to lock up the chicken coop,” I said.
Catching her breath and coming down from the heat we were building, Frankie Dee almost groaned in protest as I got up from the bed.
“I’ll be right back,” I said. “How about, to make up for the momentary disruption, I’ll walk back into the room sans dress?”
The blonde woman in my bed honest-to-gods snapped her teeth in my direction, and I found myself lit with fire anew.
Turning to go, I looked back over my shoulder for just a moment.
“Oh, I had your consent to do the thing we were about to do, right? Just wanted to make sure.”
With her eyes suddenly drooping, Frankie nodded. And then she yawned, which caused me to turn back around and cross my arms.
“Well, I’m sorry you found our activities so dull, Frankie,” I said, grinning and leaning against the door frame.
She rubbed her eyes and then shook her head in a desperate bid not to look exhausted.
“I’m sorry. I was at the office at 5 a.m. this morning for an interview, and your bed is fucking comfy. But I’ll be SO ready when you get back,” Frankie said.
Holy shit. Who arrives at the office that early? I thought, fighting a frown. It’s already midnight, and she came straight from work at 7 tonight.
Pushing those thoughts aside, I ran outside to close the chicken coop, made sure Billie’s water was full and accessible, and came back in.
Taking a deep breath in the hallway, I stripped to my black bra and panties, sauntering back into the bedroom, trying hard not to leap at Frankie on the bed to resume our rather explicit activities.
“Now. . . where were we?” I asked in as saucy of a voice as I could produce.
When I didn’t get an immediate response, I thought, Damn. She’s frozen in awe at the sight of me. No doubt about it, Dawn. You’ve still got it.
Light snoring immediately shattered my inner monologue as I looked more closely at the bed to find my partner. . . entirely passed out.
Motherfucker! I thought. I either really did bore her, or she truly was exhausted after working a 14-hour shift.
Scanning the bags under her eyes, I sighed.
“For the sake of my ego, I’m going to assume it’s the latter,” I muttered, finding a fuzzy white blanket I stole from an ex named Brittany, and covering my date for the night. My incredibly cute and incredibly frustrating date.
Changing into my comfy pajamas and turning out the lights, I decided to bunk on the couch tonight. It took a while to fall asleep as all my effort went into not thinking about what we’d been doing on this very couch just minutes ago.

2024.04.26 23:56 baldflubber A pretty solarpunky day

TL;DR: A lot of bragging about a great day.
I volunteer at a german fair trade shop and the cultural center it's connected to.
Today one of our import partners had an event to honor active volunteers around fair trade and of course we were invited. We also used this as an opportunity to get our latest order and transport it ourselves. So a group of us made the trip in a small van.
The event was great. Live music by different artists, a lot of vegan/vegetarian fair traded food (only exception were some small chicken skewers), ice cream and non alcoholic drinks. I also saw a little cooking presentation via live stream from Sri Lanka, and a photo presentation about fair Coconut milk production and how a whole community benefits from it. We did some additional shopping, got our big order and drove back.
We arrived back at our shop early enough to still see something of the gardening event some groups had organized in front of shop and center. It was a plant exchange with some crafting activities for kids. Some colleagues presented some of our gardening products and we stocked them up with some stuff we just bought.
It took a while to get everything into the shop and after the shop closed and the plant exchange ended I had a little break before the next event.
Our local music school together with our center had organized a little event they called "World Music Session". Every kind of musician was invited to participate. So some turkish baglamas, a clarinet, an electric piano, some drums and percussion instruments came together for a two hour session with a lot of fun and improvisation.
All in all it was a pretty amazing and pretty solarpunky day.
