8 Most Important Pages Every E-commerce Website Needs
E-commerce websites need to keep their audience interested at all times to be successful. If you run an online business, you have to create a great user experience, or you could lose customers after the first visit.
Online stores have to constantly engage their audience to do well. A great user experience is the key to success and returning customers.
If you own an e-commerce store, do you know what pages your customers expect to see on your website?

General Ecommerce Pages

1. Home Page

First impression of your brand. It features promotions, lifestyle images, and highlighted products or categories. Clearly state what makes your brand unique and include any guarantees, such as free shipping. Remember, visitors don't always start here; They can land directly on any page.

2. Category Overview

This is for high-level categories like "Women" or "Electronics". It gives an overview of what's inside rather than listing all the products. If your categories are deep (like Women > Tops > Sweaters), use multiple overview pages. For single-level categories, go directly to the category page.

3. Category Page

A grid view of products in specific categories, with filters to help users find what they want. Unlike the category overview, this page is about browsing multiple products at once.

4. Product Page

Shows complete product details and pricing. The main goal is to get users to add items to their carts. This can be promoted by adding reviews, related products, and user-generated content.

5. Search and Search Results

Essential for sites with many products. The search field is usually in the nav menu. The result page may look like a series page or have a unique design. A 'suggested search' can show products while the user is typing, reducing the need for a separate results page.

6. Login/Create Account

Allows customers to save order history, and payment information and manage wish lists or rewards. This can be a separate page, model, or dropdown. Ensure users can easily switch between login and account creation.

7. Mini Cart

Not a full page, but an important feature. It displays visual feedback when an item is added to the cart, usually as a dropdown or modal. It should recap what was added and update the subtotal.

8. Cart Page

Lists all items added with options to edit. Show estimated shipping costs and promo code fields so users know their final price early. Users may be required to enter their zip code for a shipping estimate.

2024.05.21 09:50 lombardoluxury Installing Outdoor Speakers

WHY INSTALL OUTDOOR SPEAKERS?

Outdoor speakers go beyond just playing music. They can create a truly immersive atmosphere. Imagine the gentle sounds of nature or calming background music setting the mood for a relaxing evening under the stars or your favorite playlist filling the air as you host a fun-filled pool party.
Outdoor speakers offer a multitude of advantages that elevate your outdoor living experience:

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SPEAKERS

The journey to auditory bliss begins with selecting the right speakers. For outdoor environments, durability meets design in weather-resistant models that promise longevity against the elements. Selecting the ideal outdoor speaker system depends on your unique needs and preferences.
Here are the different kinds of outdoor speaker systems:

1. IN-GROUND SPEAKERS

Imagine an outdoor entertainment haven where captivating sound emerges from the ground itself. In-ground speakers offer a luxurious and aesthetically pleasing solution for integrating high-fidelity audio into your outdoor space. Discreetly hidden beneath the surface, they provide exceptional sound quality without any visible speakers to disrupt the visual harmony of your landscaping.

2. ROCK SPEAKERS

These speakers, disguised as natural rocks, seamlessly blend into your landscaping, creating a truly organic feel. They are perfect for achieving an “invisible” sound system. Rock speakers are the ultimate in discreet outdoor audio. This makes them perfect for those who desire a high-fidelity soundscape without sacrificing the visual aesthetics of their outdoor space.

3. CEILING SPEAKERS

Ceiling speakers provide a sophisticated and functional solution for discreetly adding high-quality audio to your covered outdoor living areas. Designed for patios, gazebos, pergolas, or even outdoor sunrooms with covered ceilings, these speakers offer a discreet way to disperse high-quality sound throughout the space.

4. WALL-MOUNT SPEAKERS

Wall-mount speakers are the workhorses of outdoor audio, offering a versatile and space-saving solution for patios, decks, balconies, or any area with vertical surfaces. They come in a variety of styles, sizes, and colors, allowing you to find the perfect match for your outdoor décor and achieve the desired level of sound coverage.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS FOR INSTALLING OUTDOOR SPEAKERS IN YOUR FLORIDA OASIS

Installing outdoor speakers or an audio system in your outdoor space in Florida can significantly enhance your entertainment experience. However, there are several important factors to consider to ensure that your system performs well in the unique Floridian environment and meets your entertainment needs:

WEATHER RESISTANCE

Florida’s climate can be harsh on outdoor electronics. Look for speakers and audio equipment specifically designed to withstand humidity, heat, and occasional rain. UV resistance is also important to prevent damage from the sun’s rays.

SOUND QUALITY

Outdoor spaces often have different acoustics than indoor environments. Choose speakers that offer a clear, high-quality sound that can fill your outdoor area without distortion, even in open spaces.

SPEAKER PLACEMENT AND COVERAGE

Strategically place your speakers to maximize sound coverage and minimize noise pollution to your neighbors. Consider the layout of your outdoor space and the usual seating arrangements. Multiple speakers placed around the area at a lower volume are often better than a few speakers at a high volume.

POWER SOURCE

Consider how your outdoor speakers will be powered. Options include traditional AC power, batteries, or solar-powered speakers. Each has its advantages and limitations, so choose what best fits your setup and convenience.

INTEGRATION WITH EXISTING SYSTEMS

If you have an existing home audio system, consider how your outdoor speakers will integrate with it. You might want a system that can be easily controlled from the same device or platform as your indoor system.

VOLUME CONTROL

Easy access to volume control is crucial, especially if you will be entertaining guests. Remote control or a connected app can provide convenient access to adjust the volume as needed.

DURABILITY AND MAINTENANCE

Look for durable speakers that require minimal maintenance, especially in a salt-air environment if you live near the coast. Corrosion-resistant materials will ensure a longer lifespan for your outdoor audio equipment.

2024.05.20 22:05 Epistatic Psychic Damage and Soul-Crushing Drama: Inside our Harrowing Exalted 2.5e campaign

Critical emotional damage in the most harrowing campaign I’ve ever played (Exalted 2.5e)
My campaign is a mixed-format live audio sessions and play-by-post text roleplay Exalted 2.5e campaign that’s now been ongoing for the past 5 months. It’s now 15 sessions and 60+ text sessions deep, but has somehow never stopped breaking new ground in psychic damage and soul-wrenching drama. This just happened last weekend in the play-by-text portion, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did playing it.
Relevant characters:
Gold (PC), just some guy, a revolutionary rebellion leader who died in the course of anti-establishment activities and re-awakened as an Abyssal Exalt, now grappling with his new nature, still dedicated to the idea of doing good for the world.
Ayesha Ura (NPC), a socialite sorceress, an ancient legendary Elder Sidereal Exalt, who has been trying her best to actively do good for 1,500 years now, working in Heaven to protect the entire world and keep it all together. Ayesha truly and sincerely believes that the ancient Solar Exalted god-kings murdered and cast out of the world by her ex, who just recently returned and have been causing chaos anew, can do great and good things for the world, if only she could show them how. She is the one who arranged for the entire circle of PCs to have their powers, and has been guiding, watching, and judging them from the shadows until she recently revealed herself and invited them all to a party at her house to cast prophecies to the stars and decide upon the future of the world together.
Thei (PC), a slick socialite conman, an Infernal Exalt empowered by the Ebon Dragon, the primordial principle of deceit, antagonism, evil and scumbaggery itself, whose entire motivation is to spite the Ebon Dragon. Some of his powers allow him to tear down the successes and defenses of other characters, other powers allow him to be a wish-granting genie, granting magical miracles and wishes nearly without limit, while un-knowingly ensnaring them into punishing debts to him. Out of spite to the Ebon Dragon, Thei is committed to using these toxic, antagonistic powers selflessly to recklessly do good. Thei has a demon familiar named Lucy, a child of the Ebon Dragon, a mischievous creature embedded as an eternal companion into his soul.
And this is what happened Saturday night.
Gold had been interrogating Ayesha, feeling outraged and manipulated about Ayesha withholding information from the party about the monsters she sent them to kill, and Ayesha replied with piercing questions about the tension between ideological purity and radical honesty, vs the necessities of being efficient and effective at dealing with the overwhelmingly huge tide of problems the world is constantly facing. Ayesha points out how irrelevant the monster’s backstory is towards what it has become and how necessary its destruction was, and she tells him that once he has actively worked at actually trying to do good for as long as she has, he will get it too. He sees how dedicated she is to her work, how deeply she truly believes in what she is doing, and how profoundly ancient with exhaustion this beautiful, graceful, socially magnificent party-girl of a woman actually is.
It hits hard enough to make both Gold and the player behind him, think hard and question their own ideals, thinking he will never become like her but fearing that she’s right.
She asks him about another Exalt, a Solar named Mikal who is new to her but an old friend of Gold’s. And Gold tells her much, but, feeling like she is too devastated already to hear everything that he knows, he chooses to withhold some things from her, for her own sake.
Exactly as Ayesha just predicted he would.
Gold rolls against Ayesha’s mental defenses, and scores very high, but not high enough to beat her razor-sharp social senses.
In discord, I see Thei begin to type, obviously wanting to use his Shadow-Spite Curse to tear down Ayesha’s defenses and aid Gold’s success, but I know he is completely out of essence for his powers, having tapped himself out in his last encounter, and I see him stop typing. I drop an out-of-character aside about how tapped out he is, to rofl reactions all ‘round as Gold and Ayesha continue.
Ayesha notices Gold withholding information, but, exhausted and mostly tapped out herself, decides to trust his judgement in keeping things from her instead of pressing the issue, and feels smug that he is already doing what she predicted.
Gold pivots, and asks her how she’s feeling, how she’s holding up, and asks when’s the last time she actually allowed herself to rest. And the ancient elder Sidereal, weighted with the burden of having to be way too mature for way too long, takes a moment to actually relax and act childish, flopping down onto the chaise, burying her face under a mountain of pillows, and dumping her feelings, whining about how precariously the entire world is currently teetering on the edge of catastrophe, and how she’s feeling about her personal quest to sculpt the PC party into a force capable of carrying that burden, and the pressure of doing it soon enough that they are in place to catch the pieces BEFORE the Realm, the current imperial superpower of the world, falls apart, or else an unthinkably massive amount of people are going to die in the aftermath.
Blown away by the human side of Ayesha, coming out from beneath all her layers of politics, maneuvering, and poise, he suggests that, if she can’t take a vacation, she should at least make a pillow fort to rest in. And Ayesha responds by transforming her magitech couch into a fort, with herself already inside.
Gold goes to the fort entrance, playing along asking for permission to enter, and Ayesha, in a silly voice, makes a 4th wall reference to the call-and-response codewords that another PC invented ages ago, which the rest of the players had cared so little for and were so incapable of remembering that it had become a running joke.
Gold replies, with the correct response and is welcomed into the pillow fort, and somehow, in this campaign, our characters themselves, are now roleplaying with each other.
Ayesha casts an anti-scrying warding spell, using discord’s spoiler formatting to black-bar everything she says and teaches Gold the formatting for how to do the same, shrouding the whole conversation so that everyone else reading the chat has to break the 4th wall themselves to read this dialogue.
And Gold proceeds to lightly jokingly antagonize Ayesha about her own mental health, and when she’s ever going to take a break.
And somehow, Lucy appears inside the fort with them. Dark, cozy corner, shrouded with wards, filled with playful antagonism? Lucy bursts into the spoiler-tagged, shrouded conversation with the exuberance of a child going “ooh ooh ooh me too can I play too am I doing this right?”
Gold and Ayesha are both surprised but welcome Lucy’s presence, and the three of them continue playing on.
Eventually, I rule that this entire conversation counts as a dramatic action of Gold attempting to cheer Ayesha up, and I ask Gold to make a heavily advantaged roll against Ayesha’s mental defenses.
Breaths are held as Gold rolls, and… Failure. Ayesha’s emotional walls are just too strong, and Gold’s persuasion misses.
I see Thei’s player active in other channels on the server, online and talking out-of-character with people about art.
So Lucy slides into Thei’s secret player-and-DM channel. “Thei are you there? Are you there? I need you RIGHT NOW. Do you have essence for a Shadow Spite Curse?”
At this point Thei has no idea what’s going on in the RP game channel, but says “No I don’t.”
Lucy says, “I’ve got a deal for you. Please, I have 20 motes of essence, please take them right now, Ayesha needs help. I can gift you these motes and I won’t ask for much in return pleeeeease do this for me right now!”
Thei, who has never refused an obvious trap in his entire life, knows this is going to hurt, and cannot wait to find out how, says “I accept!”, overflowing with dread as he does.
Boom, 20 motes of essence received.
Lucy points Thei back to the channel, he sees the most recent roll, and announces that he activates Shadow Spite Curse, to tear Ayesha’s defenses down so that Gold’s cheer hits, instead.
Ayesha starts giggling, then laughing, then breaking down completely with hideously joyful, cackling laughter as Gold’s efforts do hit her after all, and she recovers some willpower as she allows herself, for the first time in far too long, to actually feel a feeling and be a person again. She laughs so joyfully that she shatters her own silencing wards, and her laughter echoes throughout the entire space of her party.
Inside the pillow fort and inside Thei’s head, Lucy says, “I did it! I saved Ayesha!”, and then, she begins to fade.
Inside Thei’s head, Lucy is exuberant. “I saved someone, Thei! Just like you do! I saved Ayesha! I did it!”
She starts to fade. “Hey, here’s what I want from you in exchange for those motes. Please, just, stay alive, okay? Please still be here when I return. You dummy.”
And with that, she’s gone, having just transmuted her entire self into raw power for Thei’s use. And, with a feeling as un-nerving as his own heartbeat stopping, the absence of something that’s been with him for so long that he has never known life without it, he is suddenly alone inside his own head.
In the chat, the response is: … … … … …
Thei immediately begins melting down with panic, freaking out, screaming at Lucy demanding she come back.
…. ..
He continues panicking, desperately trying to cope, telling himself that if greater demons come back from death surely his friend could, too.
…. . ._. .
He keeps on freaking out, grieving over what he’s done, even as Ayesha’s joyful laughter fills his ears, his private chat greeted by nothing but ellipsis.
,.. .., ,, ,, ,.,,
Thei says, to the silence, “what do I do?”
I ask him to make an Int+ Occult check.
He succeeds on the roll.
I send him in reply… a Morse Code table, and sit back cackling as I wait for him to realize, then go back and translate all the “silence” he was getting.
“S S S S S”
“H I”
“H E R E”
“D U M M Y”
Somehow, Thei finds yet another depth of anguish and psychic pain, screaming at Lucy that she’d torment him like this and promising to kill her himself if she wasn’t already dead right now, for doing this to him.
One last message comes through the ellipsis for him:
“L O L L M A O”
And that moment was where the live-session would start the next day.

2024.05.20 17:10 icallshogun Bridgebuilder - Chapter 89

Disruption
First Prev
There was a moment where Alex thought it might be prudent to reach over and grab Carbon’s jacket, just kinda ground her a little bit given what she’d done to the Royal Guard the other day. But the soldier had specifically told them to move away from him, so that might look like trying to take a hostage and he knew fuck all about this guy’s intentions.
He could say for certain he didn’t particularly enjoy looking down the barrel of a gun, though.
The only upshot so far? This guy, and the whole crew behind him, were composed. The translator was good at managing the nuance of voices and while he was loud, he wasn’t angry. He wasn’t nervous. He was doing his job. Presumably that job was protecting the ship.
From Alex. For reasons that were not obvious to anyone else in the room.
“Sergeant. I assume you believe you have reason to point that rifle at the Prince, but I would like it if you did not.” Carbon switched to Tsla, and she dropped right out of that friendly tone she’d just had, the pleasant demeanor she had carried discarded in favor of an unspoken preparation for violence. Her voice carried that as a promise, hard and low.
To his credit as a professional, the Sergeant didn’t react. He stood his ground, one eye hidden behind the sensor cluster of his rifle’s scope, the other still trained on Alex. “Princess, step away from him. He has attempted to compromise this ship.”
“Fu-” While Alex was emboldened to speak his mind by Carbon’s reaction, cussing the guy out first thing was probably not the best idea. He still refrained from making any sort of movement, as well. He had no idea how he could have compromised the ship sitting around talking about heraldry. “I haven’t done that.”
“He would not.” Carbon swiveled her chair to fully face the Sergeant, the systems on her clothing coming back online with a soft hum before racks of shield emitters that dotted her protective gear popped back to life. “Stand down now or I will make you.”
That got his attention, eyes darting to Carbon and back to Alex even though his firearm never wavered. He seemed to be taking Carbon’s words into consideration, at least, even if he did look unsure of himself now. He swallowed, ears flattening as he gripped the rifle tighter.
“I’d do what she says, just as some friendly advice.” He tried to act nonchalant despite his voice rising as fear crept up his spine. He didn’t enjoy the idea of getting shot, even if he was sure that he could get it fixed up if it was just a round or two in the chest. More time in the mediboard was not on his list of stuff to do. Alex cleared his throat gently, placing his hands on the table before he continued, hoping to set the Sergeant at ease. “Not big a deal anyway, I’m staying in this chair until I find out what’s going on.”
It didn’t seem to help, at first. He was clearly conflicted but his body stayed tense, gray eyes intent on Alex. He lowered the barrel slowly, the weapon still pointed in Alex’s direction but no longer covering him. The rest of his team followed suit.
“Thank you, Sergeant. Explain why you are here.” Carbon had dialed the venom back but her words were still sharp, commanding.
“Lady Sorenson, Communications alerted us to an unexpected transmission from this compartment’s intranet link.” He continued to eye Alex, still ready for action even if he wasn’t set to gun him down immediately.
Alex kept his hands on the table, turning just his head to look at the Sergeant. “And how does that implicate me?”
“Approximately fifteen minutes ago, an unregistered computer accessed the Human Solanet connection and began transmitting an encrypted datastream. All secured non-Tslao equipment has been checked to prevent espionage. You are in possession of the only unsecured Human electronics on the ship.”
“Okay, you know what. That is pretty good.” Alex nodded in agreement. Fifteen minutes ago was about when they arrived in the area, so potentially anything he had on him could have accessed the network. There was one little issue, though. “But. I can’t send any information. The only Human technology I have with me is my translator and implants, and neither of those have the modems to connect to networks like the Solanet. What’s more, no one in their right mind is going to let their brain implants touch the internet.”
Carbon gave a little nod in agreement.
The Sergeant was not so easily swayed. “There is no other place for it to have originated from.”
“I’m just saying, if I wanted to send data, I’d just send it via the milnet. I wouldn’t even have to roll out of bed.” He was getting a little more animated as he worked up his defense. “I had no hand in making this appointment, and I’m supposed to be the one using it as an excuse to ‘compromise’ the ship? Besides, if I had known there was a live Solanet connection, I would be up here daily.”
“The prince speaks the truth. I have seen him and he has no interest in deceit.”
The Sergeant shook his head, obstinate, which was probably a good trait in his line of work. “This is the only compartment with an open link to the Human public Solanet right now. All others are limited to their milnet. Communications stated that the stream originated from an unnamed device, not the workstation that had been issued here.”
That gave Alex something to chew over. Admittedly, it sounded like it locked him in pretty tight, even if he didn’t have the equipment, or inclination to do anything like that. He did have some lived experience that would prove his intentions out, though. “We can settle this right now. I’ll show you what I’ve been doing for the last fifteen minutes. The whole damn morning, if it makes you feel better. Come on, get those things out.” He gestured at the Sergeant’s antenna, currently resting in an interface on the back of his combat shirt.
He looked from Alex to Carbon, even glanced over at Lyshen for half a second. “You can do that?”
“Yeah.” Alex closed his eyes and exhaled a very annoyed sigh. “Yeah I can. I don’t have the antenna, but it still works. It’s a brain layout thing. You know how it works for babies or people who are unconscious?”
“I do.” He contemplated what Alex was saying before shaking his head. “It does not matter. I am not here to determine your innocence. I am here to take you into custody and move into an area where you cannot continue to transmit data.”
Really. I’m telling you, I’m not transmitting any data. I have no way to do that.” So just fuck off. He didn’t say that part, but it was there. He wasn’t here to compromise the ship, whatever that meant exactly. He wouldn’t spy on anyone! Not on purpose, anyway. He didn’t even like the way just thinking about it made him feel...
But he worked for people who would gladly do so without issue. That was their entire reason for existing! It wasn’t the Civilian Pilot Program on the paperwork to get his Amp replaced, it was the Office of Naval Intelligence. It was the ONI that provided the Internal Translator with a custom language package. Who likely had fingerprints all over every part of his substantial list of wetware, which had been exhibiting unexpected behaviors since he got them. “Oh, fuck!”
“What? What is wrong?” Carbon jerked back around towards him, startled by his sudden burst of profanity.
“I'm fine, I just think he’s right.” Alex looked up at the Sergeant, the easy tone he’d been affecting so far gone, replaced by sudden intensity. “They cut the transmission?”
His eyes had widened slightly, the rifle back up at Alex’s chest. “Yes, it was stopped automatically.”
Lyshen’s Solanet link hadn’t gone down, it had been shut off by Communications.
“Good. Could you put that fucking thing down? You’re about to get what you came here for, so chill.” He slipped his external translator off his shoulder and started picking at the latch on the back with his fingernails as he turned to Carbon. “Could you call Eleya? I don’t have her number.”
Carbon had Eleya dialed in less than a minute.
Alex plucked the battery out of the back of the translator and dumped all the parts onto Lyshen’s desk. The lights on the device going dark after a few seconds, his Amp complaining as it lost the connection. He took the phone from Carbon. Remarkably, it worked just like a Human phone did. You just press it to your head and talk.
When the Empress picked up she sounded pleasant again, familial warmth cranked all the way to eleven. “Hello, my dearest niece. I am-”
“Hey, it’s me.” Even with the soldier’s rifles lowered again, each second waiting for Eleya had been an eternity. His suspicion about the transmission was making every moment stretch out, even though it would likely take some time to find out one way or another. “You remember that time I almost got killed?”
“Yes.” The charm had gone away, though she remained civil.
“I know you had some research done while I was out.” He assumed as much. They had the opportunity, it stood to reason they would take it particularly after what they had found out yesterday. Was that bad? Maybe. Did he care? Not right now. ”Did you do anything with my Amp?”
There were a few heartbeats of silence on the call. “Are you in a secure location?”
“Yeah.” Alex looked from Carbon to the Sergeant and over to Lyshen. “Of course.”
All of your on-board technology was studied.” Eleya was clearly reluctant to say even that.
“Super. I need someone who’s gotten familiar with it to take a look at mine. There may be something wrong with it. Security and privacy problems, for you and me respectively. Big ones.”
Another hesitation. “Come to aft research lab six. I will meet you there and we will discuss these problems further.”
“Aft research lab six. See you there.” Alex tapped the button to end the call, which he seemed to have gotten correct. He handed the communicator back to Carbon. “I’m going to need you to translate for a bit.”
“Of course.” It sounded more like a question, but she nodded in agreement as the black rectangle disappeared back into her jacket. “What is in the research lab?”
“Something related to my Amp.” He assumed, anyway.
“Ah. I see.” Carbon seemed to be putting things together with him.
“Alright, this is going to look weird so everybody just chill. Don’t. Fucking. Shoot. Me.” That last bit was aimed squarely at the Sergeant. Alex reached up and began tapping his face in a particular series of locations. Left temple, right temple, nose, left temple again, left cheek... He ran down this physical cheat code and ended it by tapping his chin three times. All his machine interfaces shut off. “Okay. Somebody say something.”
Carbon was first to react. “What was that?”
She said it in English.
“I meant in Tsla.” He paused, a stressed laugh escaping him. That had been a little funny. “Deep brain interfaces have hardcoded shutdown sequences that sit in the body interface layer - also hardcoded - so it can’t be intercepted, or otherwise bypassed. Y’know, in case of runaway processes, lock-in, spyware your government installed. That sorta stuff.”
She rattled off something in Tsla that sounded a wee bit accusatory. He caught a ‘you’ in there, but that was it.
“Ok, it appears to be off. All the electronics I received from the ONI are currently off.” Alex stated that loudly, this whole endeavor suddenly feeling much more martial. He shrugged off his jacket, piling the translator and its battery into it and then wrapping it up into a tight bundle, which he stuck under his arm. Good thing he opted for the plain t-shirt today. “Sergeant, per the instructions of the Empress, please escort me to aft research lab six.”
It was weird to walk in such a large group and not have anyone talking. Seven people there, following Carbon as she actually knew where the lab was without having to consult a map. Everyone just walking. The single-note step of a Tsla’o footfalls was even more noticeable when that was the only sound, Alex’s heel-toe stride an outlier.
Ship security had their own maglev lines, running above the main line. There were multiple tracks, with smaller, windowless, cars. Everyone filed in, and they departed for the other end of the Sword of the Morning Light.
For the first time in quite a long while, he didn’t feel like chatting with Carbon about whatever was on his mind as soon as his butt was in a seat. Alex did reach over to her and pat her knee, smiling when she turned to look. She returned it, faintly, though the thin smile disappeared when the Sergeant looked over at them.
Since they were going to be looking at them, Alex turned his attention to their escort. Two gray, two red, one blue. Wearing the gray camo uniform that Amalu had worn, but none of them were wearing body armor, or even carrying much extra equipment aside from what fit on a belt.
The Sergeant had the most detailed rank marker, despite being ‘just’ a Sergeant, and was the only one carrying a rifle. The next down was a red-furred female that reminded him of Zenshen, but clearly wasn’t. Older, more muscular. About half as much detail on her rank, and sporting what looked like a snub-nosed SMG.
The remaining three were probably the Tsla’o equivalent of Privates. One of them had a single line carved in his plate, and looked almost as young as Haraya. All of them were packing some sort of sidearm, all stowed in holsters now. Alex did recognize the Tsla’o symbol for ‘electricty’ on the neon pink magazines on the belt of the closest soldier, clearly different from the plain black mags the two real guns had. Obvious visible differences for nonlethal weapons, if that convention held between their races. It was nice to see they hadn’t all come ready to kill. If the stun baton was anything to go by, those pistols would still hurt like hell.
The car dinged its arrival, the sound more business than the friendly notes that the regular maglev played, and they exited. Two stops from the furthest aft, and Carbon gestured for them to follow to the nearby lifts.
The ride had not done anything to ease the obvious anger that was simmering just below the surface. Alex assumed he was the only one picking that up because he’d come to know her well - her face was placid as they piled into the elevator, with the exception of a brow crease that he hadn’t seen since the early months of the Kshlav’o expedition.
They went all the way up to deck twenty.
While Alex was fully comfortable with Carbon’s navigation of the ship, the Sergeant and Not-Zenshen were discussing something quietly behind him, both of them looking at a map on his communicators when he stole a glance back. Neither of them sounded worried, but the Sergeant’s tones were much more relaxed as he traced a finger along the screen. Trust but verify, apparently.
There was a particular scent in the air as they approached a massive white blast door. Ozone, and a hint of something else hidden under it. Something bitter. Large block letters in Tsla marking the door as leading to... whatever was in there. Alex still couldn’t read enough of their language to decipher it, but he did recognize the symbol for ‘6’ at the end of one line.
Carbon leaned into the access panel and it scanned her - not the usual blip of a retinal scan, either. This took seconds, lasers sweeping across her face. Down and then back up, left to right, right to left. It beeped an affirmative and the heavy doors began to retract, the better part of a meter thick.
Beyond it was a large, brightly lit social area. Benches, plants, doorways and corridors running off to who knows where. There were even a few Tsla’o sitting at tables in the back trying to eat with the Empress standing right there.
Eleya had made good on her word. The Tsal’o Empress was waiting for them on the other side of the doors, arms crossed over her chest. Clearly annoyed, and flanked by the indistinct forms of her Guard. The most curious thing about her today was the shift in clothing. Her usual formal jacket replaced with a black version of the shirt the soldiers behind him were wearing, but buttoned to the top and bereft of any adornment. She wasn’t even wearing her piercings.
“Hey, my favorite aunt!” He lied, tossing his arms out and pulling her into a hug. Alex was careful about this, putting Eleya’s head between him and Carbon and lowering his voice to the faintest whisper. “She’s already mad. Best behavior.”
He released her before the guard did anything about that, which... Alex couldn’t tell if that was a training issue, or if he was on the OK to hug the Empress list. Perhaps the shakeup that Eleya had spoken about the night before was already underway.
Eleya said something to him, unaware he did not have his translator on. She didn’t spill the beans about what he’d said, as near as he could tell, a brief glance she shot him while smoothing her shirt out did make it clear she caught it. The Empress turned her attention to the Sergeant and rattled off something that sounded very official, ending her statement with a short bow.
The entire crew that had brought them there bowed back, deeply, and turned to leave. There was another Royal Guard on the door controls on this side, the blast doors sliding closed as soon as they had crossed back into the hallway.
Eleya turned back to Alex, and started talking.
He held up a hand. “Hang on. All my hardware is off.”
“He is not getting a translation right now.” Carbon added.
Eleya’s eyes widened at hearing a version of Carbon through her translator. They started conversing, going back and forth until Carbon looked over at him. “Explain what’s happening.”
“Short of it is that your Comms team caught something on my person attempting to send data using the public network. I left my Human-made phone in our cabin, and all of my wetware shouldn’t be able to access it anyway. My going theory is one of my implants was modified to secretly record and then send that data out, but only on public networks where something like that would go unnoticed, to maintain deniability. I'll bet you anything that the Human computer in Lyshen's office has a mesh node, and that's where it gained access.” All of that came spilling out a little faster than he liked, but it was good to get it out. The idea that the ONI would use him as a tool to spy on them, well, in retrospect it really did fit. The assertion he wouldn’t actually be spying. No tradecraft. So much easier to load him up with technology and let him bumble his way through whatever might happen, soaking up who knows what in the process. And when he inevitably came back to a Confed station, or went back to Earth, it would dump it right into their lap. “I’m really hoping you’ve started developing a way to drive a keyed PIN, because that’s the only way we’re going to be able to check it.”
Eleya spoke, gesturing up a flight of stairs.
“She says we will speak with the head researcher.” Carbon was still terse, but it wasn’t directed at Eleya for once. They both had their attention drawn to a problem that needed fixing.
“Alright.” Alex breathed in deep and heaved a heavy sigh. The bitter scent in the air was a little more clear now. Something he definitely recognized, a familiar taste on his tongue. “Ok, just a little aside here... Who's making coffee?”

Picks Of The Week (by u/lefuniname)

Hello, dear reader! This thread marks four whole years (!) of us doing these threads week in and week out, and we, the whole new releases team, just want to say thank you for sticking with us for this long. I'll put some fun review statistics in the comments below, but for now, let's take a look at two excellent schnitzeltastic Austrian DnB releases from this week!

1. Wingz - Ghost LP [Overview Music]

Recommended if you like: Rizzle, En:vy, Invadhertz
For my tastes, the minimal/deep and dark scene in drum and bass is sometimes a little too crowded. Every single week, we've got upwards of 50 releases just in that corner, and while I try my best to highlight the really good ones, I've still got a bunch of other subgenres I deeply (heh) care about as well, leading to a lot of dark stuff slipping through the cracks. Not all of it good, mind you. Some of it though! For instance, one excellent artist that we haven't talked about here at all yet, that has been consistently delivering pure gold on the vibey, rolling, minimal sound front for years now, is very much overdue a proper spotlight on here. Of course, I'm talking about the Luigi of the dnb scene (a quote of his I sadly cannot find the link for anymore), Wingz! More like the Luigenius of DnB. Anyway.
While his journey to widespread acclaim in the scene arguably only started to properly kickstart in 2019, Viennamese music enthusiast and professional Twitterer Markus Kocar has earned his musical wingz way earlier than you might think. Back in 2008 (!), Markus had already begun delving deeper into all things DJing, and depending on how far back you go, you minimal enjoyers might be surprised what you hear him spin. You see, after seeing Pendulum at his very first DnB party, he became a massive Dancefloor enjoyer, from where he jumped over to Jump Up and eventually Neurofunk, which provided a smooth transition point to the more minimal vibes he is now known for. Over the years, Markus got more and more active around the scene, sharing his mixes around a lot, regularly hanging out on DnB forums and just generally interacting more with the scene in Vienna. One fateful day in 2013, he was chatting to this Austrian guy, who had been gaining some popularity recently, I think his name was Meth Juice or something, no one you would know nowadays, and he basically told him, if you don't start producing you won't stand out amongst the sea of DnB DJs. So... he did just that!
It didn't take long for him to put the knowledge he had gained from his time on the legendary Neurohop Forum, on which he made tons of connections with the likes of Grey Code, Vorso, Rueben and many more, to good use, turning what began with certified club bangers like "Untitled Roller WIP" into much more serious output, the first of which was debuted on the then-newly-founded IN:DEEP Music in 2014. As the Forum transitioned over to Facebook and turned into what you might now know as the Music Squad, Markus continued to improve his game, by not only showing Dancefloors all over the area what a good set sounds like, but even touring with man like Phace and spreading his production wingz far and wide across the likes of T3K, Context, Addictive Behaviour, Flexout (which earned him his first Noisia Radio play), Demand Records (which earned him support on Skankandbass), and eventually, Lifestyle. Why am I highlighting Lifestyle in this list? Because that's where he made the career-altering connection with none other than Peter Piper Maxted, who was part of Lifestyle at the time and would go on to found his very own label, Overview Music, soon after this.
Not only did Peter fly Markus over for his first UK gig in the one and only Volks club in Brighton in 2018, since then he also signed him on for (as of right now) 5 whole EPs and so many hot singles the ads on even the filthiest of websites will pale in comparisons. Wingz wasn't just a household name on the Overview roster though, during that time he also debuted on (warning, long list) Korsakov, Mainframe, Fraktal, Cyberfunk, Deep Within, V Recordings, Delta9, 4NC¥ //DarkMode, Sofa Sound, VISION, Blackout and DIVIDID, remixing Noisia, Agressor Bunx, Droptek, Grey Code and Data 3 and collaborating with Rueben (who remixed him in 2017 as Ordure!), Submarine, Waeys and En:vy along the way. Phew. Not to mention his Future Garage alias In Agony, with which he showed the world his take on the Burial sound, and his sets all over the world, hitting even South Africa in recent times! I feel like I used my spreading his wingz pun too early.
However, there was one thing he hadn't done all through this yet: an album. As you can maybe tell from the way I not so subtly phrased that there, that changed this week, with the long-awaited arrival of the Ghost long player on his home imprint, Overview. So let's check it out!
We ease into the landscape of the melodically pleasing, deeply minimal vibes Wingz has become known for with the opening track Ghost, showcasing a ton of introductory atmospheric beauty, before smoothly sailing down a stream of minimal rolling vibes, the melodies around it constantly evolving over the stretch of one very long drop. Lonely Place continues the general vibe of minimalistic ear candy nicely with a proper low blanket of (sub)bass keeping us safely tucked in, while a mean kick shakes us to our core and a lot of heavy reverberations fill out the scenery. However, from the distance, we can hear someone approaching: Rider Shafique! On Keep Control, we trade lovely vibes with large swaths of goosebump-causing sounds intertwined with Rider's signature menacing vocals, both exhaling pure destruction at every stop. These heavier tones linger on a little bit longer, as Street Echoes takes us down the path of upfront, powerful drum action, basslines going back and forth between delightfully threatening and growing into menacing mountains of madness, and a vocal that demands that you dance already.
After so much energy, we have earned ourselves a bit of a break, and luckily, Wingz delivers a proper auditory vacation with Parting. Audio crackles, a tightly looping dramatic melody in the background, a moody vocal, plopped onto a smoothly rolling, hi-hat-filled drum set, with the occasional vocal, synth bloop and even some tiny distortion peeking through - just lovely! Speaking of, Guardian Angel takes this loveliness and amplifies it to straight-up soul-soothing, thanks to West Midlandian Luke Truth bringing in one of his most soulful performances yet, while we continuously roll through all sorts of subtle subdued little treats for the ears floating around on here. Gambit very much breaks us out of our trance, with only the wubbiest of wubs, the snappiest of snaps and some gnarly distorted basses. Minimal club bangerism at its finest! On the followup Submission we go deeper and deeper into it, with a supremely deeply vibrating, Dancefloor-incinerating bassline, spiced up with a drum-laden cocktail of think breaks, rave sirens, what sounds like turn indicators and even more I can't quite identify, evolving in a really satisfying way.
We stay down in the aggressive mud a little bit longer, with Within Me. Not only do we get great finely-tuned and groovy aggression coming from the drum action, we've also got some thick bass whomps and the strangely catchy, titular vocal sample - a banger, in other words! On Tonight, the vibe pendulum swings back to the lovely side of things, this time brought to us via a composition of soulfully synthed-up chords, blooped-up synth bleeps, distorted stabs, and an intoxicating tincture of various nicely processed vocals. The vibe pendulum strikes again, and we are back with one last wub-infused minimal club banger, Someone, that in my eyes especially excels in the relentlessly tick-tick-ticking drums that hammer into us while we witness the back-and-forth between the bwoam and the wubs. I'm very good with words, you see. For our closer Forgive & Forget, Wingz swings (say that three times) back into soulful territory once more, ending this journey through melodic minimalism with the one and only Collette Warren putting on a hell of a performance, a heartwarming blanket of bass underneath it all, and just general drifting-away energy.
It's rare that I'm actually this engaged with minimal DnB on a full album runtime, but by reaching across the whole spectrum of deepness, making sure that every single tune sports a deeply satisfying progression and never straying too far from his mission of injecting musicality into even the most minimalistic of club bangers, minimalstermind Wingz has managed to capture my attention wholeheartedly.
Other deep, dark or vibey stuff from this week: - En:vy, Monty - INLOVE - Hiraeth, Alexvnder - The Truth (Leniz Remix) - Shortball, Las Iguanas - Sun Slows Down - FERVL - Vvild 💎 - YAANO, Skylark - Falling - Molecular - Heritage & Sound LP - KRÆK - XOU002 💎 - Kuttin Edge - Flicker & Flash

2. Manta - Home [Sinful Maze]

Recommended if you like: Irontype, Esym, The Clamps
After such a detailed deep dive, let's do a fun little quickie to finish things off. Luckily, we've got the perfect candidate: The one and only Manta, who you might remember from way back when we talked about his Diascope EP, has debuted on one of my favourite labels around, the wonderful Czechian imprint Sinful Maze, who you should remember from all the times I talk about it on here. Those are all separate links!
But first, a quick check-in: What has Daniel "Manta" Hollinetz from Salzburg been up to since we last talked about him here? Well, of course he has been busy playing shows all over the place, but he's also been putting out some rather (Man)tasty releases on the likes of High Tea, Blu Saphir, Korsakov and, as of 2023, even Neurofunk behemoth Eatbrain! While all of these are sick in their own right, I have to specifically shout-out his and his good mate Frank Lemon's VIP-ified version of my all-time favourite of theirs, Adventure, on Hanzom - what a tune.
Alright, so what does his Sinful Amazeing debut, Home, sound like then? Built around a sample of the Bards of Skyrim's The Age of Aggression, one of the coolest samples I've come across in recent times by the way, Home takes us through one of Manta's signature cinematic adventures full of all sorts of ear candy production elements. Right from the beginning, during the relatively short intro, we are treated to such a sick sounding guitar part that you can't help but become curious what is about to follow. As the bard hits the titular With our blood and our steel we will take back our home lyric, the age of aggression really does begin, with almost out-of-control-spiraling, soundsystem-decimating distortion explosions sparring with relentless, futuristic, colourful and straight-up mind-piercing machine gun fire. I can't even point to a specific favourite part or anything, literally everything in this just sounds so damn good. A proper adrenaline rush of a tune.
Simply Mantastic.
Other heavy stuff from this week: - DNMO, Wolfy Lights - Bombalaya (Blooom remix) (<333) - TANTRON - Enchanted - Various Artists - MODULES two - Karpa - Keep Away - Sinister Souls - Chronicles, Volume 1 - Various Artists - Headz Up vol. 2 - Foks - Miss You
