In honor of the imminent ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,’ we’re shifting into high gear to determine the best chase scene in cinema history
By Miles Surrey May 21, 2024, 6:30am EDTGetty Images/Ringer illustration
After wowing audiences with Mad Max: Fury Road, director George Miller returns to the franchise’s post-apocalyptic wastelands for Furiosa, the epic origin story of the eponymous heroine (now played by Anya Taylor-Joy), premiering on Friday. As the follow-up to one of the greatest action films ever made, it’s hard to overstate the hype for Furiosa, and that was before word got out about a showstopping 15-minute sequence that required nearly 200 stuntpeople and took 78 days to shoot. While Furiosa will have its own distinct flavor, as is true of every Mad Max movie, there’s one thing that unites these projects: intense, jaw-dropping scenes of vehicular mayhem. And what better way to honor the franchise than by celebrating what it does best?
Ahead of Furiosa’s release, we’ve put together our definitive ranking of the best car chases in cinema. There weren’t any strict rules in place, other than capping the list at 20—mostly for my own sanity—and limiting every franchise to one entry. (Apologies to Fury Road’s kickass predecessor The Road Warrior.) We also won’t discriminate against scenes that feature motorbikes, so long as cars (and/or trucks) remain part of the equation. As for what, exactly, constitutes a good car chase? Like list making, it’s bound to be subjective, but I tend to gravitate toward two key elements: the skill of the stuntwork on display and the ways in which a filmmaker conveys the action in relation to the story. (Also, the less CGI, the better.) Buckle up, ’cause we’re not wasting any time shifting into high gear.

20. Quantum of Solace (2008)

There have been some memorable car chases in the James Bond franchise: the first sequence featuring the iconic Aston Martin DB5 in Goldfinger, the corkscrew jump in The Man With the Golden Gun, the Lotus Esprit submarine in The Spy Who Loved Me. But I’m going with a somewhat controversial pick here: Quantum of Solace. There are many issues with Quantum of Solace—namely, it was one of the most high-profile blockbusters affected by the 2007-08 writers strike—but its opening scene isn’t one of them. Picking up right where Casino Royale left off, we find Bond (Daniel Craig) evading henchmen through the narrow roads around Italy’s Lake Garda. The frenetic, furious chase mirrors Bond’s sense of anguish after losing Vesper Lynd (Eva Green), the woman he opened his heart to, and his relentless quest for answers. It’s a thrilling tone-setter for Quantum of Solace and one that doesn’t overstay its welcome, capped off by Bond sending his final pursuers flying off a cliff:
If we’re being honest, though, it feels like James Bond has yet to create a franchise-defining car chase. Perhaps that’s a mission the newest 007, whoever it ends up being, can undertake.

19. Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation (2015)

The Mission: Impossible franchise is no stranger to electrifying chase scenes, the best of which find Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt working up his heart rate. When it comes to action behind the wheel, though, Fallout tends to dominate the discussion—even on this very website. But I think the vehicular chase in Rogue Nation is being slept on. What we have is effectively two sequences for the price of one: The first finds Hunt pursuing Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) by car through the narrow streets of Casablanca alongside some nefarious henchmen; the second sees him continue the chase outside the city on motorbike. (Adding to the chaos: Hunt had only just been resuscitated, and he’s clearly not all there.) In terms of death-defying stunts for the audience’s entertainment, a helmetless Cruise taking corners like a MotoGP racer is child’s play compared to his other exploits, but the actor’s authentic reaction to scraping his knee on the road underlines that there’s no one else in Hollywood doing it like him:
We’ll be sure to update this ranking if and when Cruise does something even more dangerous down the road, pun unintended.

18. Vanishing Point (1971)

A movie that counts the likes of Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino among its biggest fans, Vanishing Point is the first of a few entries on this ranking that’s essentially one extended car chase. The film stars Barry Newman as Kowalski, a man tasked with delivering a Dodge Challenger T 440 Magnum from Colorado to California while eluding police across four states. One of Kowalski’s most memorable run-ins comes when a guy driving a Jaguar E-Type convertible challenges him to an impromptu race. Incredibly, we’re expected to believe the man in the Jag comes out of this crash in one piece:
Vanishing Point might not boast the impressive production values of other movies on this list, but considering Tarantino would go on to feature a white Challenger in Death Proof, its influence in the car cinema canon is undeniable.

17. Fast Five (2011)

Let’s face it, Fast & Furious has seen better days. Some believe the franchise’s dip in quality coincided with the death of Paul Walker; others are dismayed by the pivot from street racing to absurd feats of superherodom—emphasis on the Dom. Perhaps it’s a bit of both, but the very best movie in the series, Fast Five, manages to strike the perfect balance: It’s a relatively grounded heist thriller that nevertheless takes the franchise to ridiculous new heights. After Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew steal $100 million from a Brazilian kingpin, they drag the entire bank vault holding the money through the streets of Rio de Janeiro, all while being pursued by authorities. It’s a delightfully destructive sequence that does untold damage to Rio’s infrastructure and features some of the most bone-crunching crashes committed to film:
If the Fast franchise is going to break out of its recent slump, it would do well to remember that there’s nothing better than letting its heroes live their lives a quarter mile at a time—no detours to outer space required.

16. The Blues Brothers (1980)

A good car chase isn’t reserved just for action flicks: Comedies can get in on the act, too. In The Blues Brothers, starring the recurring Saturday Night Live characters played by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, the beloved bandmates must prevent the foreclosure of the orphanage where they were raised by scrounging together $5,000. Naturally, that’s easier said than done: Along the way, the Blues Brothers draw the attention of neo-Nazis, a country-and-western band, and local police. While The Blues Brothers has amusing gags and musical numbers, its chase sequences with the Brothers behind the wheel of a 1974 Dodge Monaco are what really steal the show—and none are better than a climactic pursuit across Chicago. More than 60 old police cars were used in the film, some of which are wrecked in a comically over-the-top pileup:
The sheer scale of The Blues Brothers’ final set piece is commendable in and of itself—as is the movie’s commitment to treating real-life cars like a bunch of Hot Wheels.

15. Baby Driver (2017)

For good and for ill, Edgar Wright’s movies exude an abundance of style, and Baby Driver is no exception. Baby Driver is centered on a clever gimmick: The action works in tandem with its soundtrack because the film’s protagonist, Baby (Ansel Elgort), suffers from tinnitus and constantly plays music to drown out the ringing. When everything’s clicking into place, Baby Driver feels like a supersized series of music videos, and nothing hits quite like its opening sequence. Baby acts as the getaway driver for a bank robbery while listening to the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s “Bellbottoms.” The ensuing chase works around rhythms of the song, as if Baby’s Subaru WRX were the star of its own dance number. Take nothing away from the actual driving, either, which puts the rally car to good use:
Baby Driver’s gimmick stretches a little thin by the end, but it’s hard to deny the crowd-pleasing power of Wright’s film when it’s firing on all cylinders.

14. The Raid 2 (2014)

With a trio of kickass Indonesian martial arts films under his belt, Gareth Evans has established himself as one of the most exciting action directors on the planet—someone who seems most in his element staging positively brutal hand-to-hand combat. In The Raid 2, however, Evans also brought his signature brand of carnage to the road. While there’s some cleverly executed close-quarters fighting within the confines of an SUV, courtesy of Iko Uwais’s hard-hitting protagonist, what really cements this sequence’s greatness are the moments when Evans turns the cars into an extension of the characters’ fists:
This belongs in an entirely new category of combat: car fights. There are so many action scenes in The Raid 2 worth writing home about—the kitchen showdown is an all-timer—but the fact that Evans casually tossed in an unforgettable car chase shows why he’s one of one.

13. The Driver (1978)

I’ll say this for Walter Hill’s The Driver: It sure lives up to its title. In this stripped-down thriller—one where none of the characters have a name—we follow the Driver (Ryan O’Neal), a getaway driver who has become a thorn in the side of the LAPD. In the film’s best scene, we see its taciturn protagonist living up to his reputation. With the Driver behind the wheel of a 1974 Ford Galaxie, a cat-and-mouse game unfolds when a handful of police cars are hot on his tail. What I love about this sequence is the pared-down nature of it all: The Driver outwits the cops as much as he outraces them. (Though, ironically, that wasn’t entirely by design: As Hill later explained, an accident on the last night of shooting meant they had to cobble together what had already been filmed.) Frankly, you’d never know the difference from the finished article:
If the general vibes of The Driver seem familiar, that’s because it was a major inspiration for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, which just so happened to feature an unnamed protagonist (Ryan Gosling) evading police through the streets of Los Angeles.

12. The Bourne Supremacy (2004)

The shaky-cam style of the Bourne franchise isn’t for everyone—just ask John Woo—but credit where it’s due: These movies know how to deliver a good chase scene. (A friendly reminder that The Bourne Legacy is an underrated gem with an awesome motorbike sequence to boot.) But there’s one Bourne chase that stands above the rest: the Moscow getaway in The Bourne Supremacy. After being wounded by the Russian assassin Kirill (Karl Urban), Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) hijacks a taxi, with both the police and Kirill in hot pursuit. This isn’t the kind of sequence that lingers on any one shot; instead, what makes it work is the frenetic nature of the editing, which allows the viewer to feel like they’re in Bourne’s fight-or-flight headspace:
If I’m being honest, I’m usually one of those people who doesn’t like the Bourne movies’ shaky-cam style, but when it’s executed with such craftsmanship, you can’t help but get caught up in its adrenaline-pumping power.

11. The Seven-Ups (1973)

Philip D’Antoni was the producer of two movies featuring Hall of Fame car chases, Bullitt and The French Connection, the latter of which won him an Oscar for Best Picture. And with his lone directorial feature, The Seven-Ups, D’Antoni sought to craft an iconic sequence of his own. The film stars Roy Scheider as NYPD detective Buddy Mannuci (elite Italian American name; I can practically smell the gabagool), who commands a unit handling major felony cases that lead to seven-plus-year prison sentences; that’s why they’re known as the Seven-Ups. Midway through the movie, when one of the team members is killed by two shooters who flee the scene, Buddy chases after them. The 10-minute sequence, which starts in the Upper West Side before moving out of the city, is thrillingly immersive, alternating between close-ups of the characters and wider shots of all the damage they’ve caused. But the chase’s defining moment comes right at the end, when Buddy narrowly avoids a grisly death:
The sequence isn’t quite at the level of Bullitt or The French Connection—very few are—but D’Antoni still manages to leave an unmistakable imprint on the car chase canon.

10. Death Proof (2007)

If you ask Quentin Tarantino, Death Proof, his knowingly trashy tribute to exploitation cinema, is the worst movie he’s ever made. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to admire about the film, which honors the unsung heroes of Hollywood: stunt performers. The first half of Death Proof follows three female friends who cross paths with Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell), a misogynistic serial killer who takes them out in his “death-proof” Chevy Nova. Fourteen months later, a group that includes stuntwoman Zoë Bell, playing herself, also lands on Mike’s radar. As Bell and her friends test out a ’70s Challenger, she performs a “ship’s mast” stunt, clinging onto the hood of the car with fastening belts. Unfortunately, when Mike pursues the women, it puts Bell in a precarious situation. Most of the entries on this list celebrate some next-level driving skills, but Death Proof’s inclusion is all about Bell pulling off one of the wildest stunts you’ll ever see. She’s quite literally hanging on for dear life:
If the Academy handed out Oscars to stunt performers—and let’s hope it does happen one day—Bell would’ve won in a landslide.

9. To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)

William Friedkin was already responsible for an all-time great car chase in The French Connection (more on that later), but the filmmaker made a commendable bid to outdo himself with To Live and Die in L.A. In this neo-noir thriller, Secret Service agent Richard Chance (William L. Petersen) is hell-bent on arresting an expert counterfeiter, Rick Masters (Willem Dafoe), who kills Chance’s partner days before his retirement. To capture Masters, Chance and his new partner, John Vukovich (John Pankow), attempt to steal $50,000 from a jewelry buyer for an undercover operation. The sting goes bad when the buyer, who is later revealed to be an undercover FBI agent, is killed and a group of gunmen goes after Chance and Vukovich. It’s a clever inversion of the usual car chase formula—this time, it’s the lawmen running away from the criminals. The outside-the-box thinking extends to the film’s most astonishing stretch, in which Chance evades the gunmen by driving into oncoming traffic:
The fact that Friedkin shot the chase at the end of filming—in case anything disastrous happened to the actors—underscores just how risky the endeavor was. The pulse-pounding results speak for themselves.

8. The Matrix Reloaded (2003)

The Matrix sequels have never been held in high esteem, but I’m ready to live my truth: The Matrix Reloaded fucking rules. (If anyone’s got a problem with this take, file your complaints with the Architect.) What’s more, the film happens to boast the finest action set piece of the franchise: the highway chase. After Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) free the Keymaker (Randall Duk Kim), a program capable of creating shortcuts within the Matrix, they’re pursued by the Twins (Neil and Adrian Rayment). Morpheus once warned that going on the freeway was “suicide,” and it doesn’t take long to see why: The chase draws the attention of several Agents, who repeatedly take over the bodies of other drivers on the road. The scene is the best of both worlds: There’s some incredible stuntwork on display, including when Moss weaves around on a Ducati, and CGI augments some feats of superhuman strength. But the most jaw-dropping aspect of the sequence is how it came together, as the production spent $2.5 million to construct its own highway (!) on California’s Alameda Island. If that weren’t unique enough, I’m pretty sure Reloaded is also the only movie in existence in which a katana takes out an SUV:
The Matrix remains the Wachowskis’ masterpiece, but don’t get it twisted: The filmmakers were still cooking with gas in the sequel.

7. Gone in 60 Seconds (1974)

Size isn’t everything, but for H. B. Halicki, who produced, wrote, directed, and starred in Gone in 60 Seconds, it’s certainly part of the package. The indie action flick follows Maindrian Pace (Halicki), a Los Angeles insurance investigator who has a lucrative side hustle jacking high-end cars. The plot kicks into motion when a South American drug lord enlists Pace to nab 48 cars within five days in exchange for $400,000. Of course, Gone in 60 Seconds is best known for what happens after Pace is caught stealing a 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1, when he leads police on a chase that lasts a whopping 40 minutes. (More than 90 cars were destroyed in the process.) Halicki, for his part, did all the driving himself, including a spectacular jump off a makeshift ramp of crashed cars:
While Halicki wound up making a few more indies after Gone in 60 Seconds, he died in an accident on the set of its sequel. His legacy as a do-it-all daredevil, however, lives on.

6. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Long before James Cameron immersed himself in the world of Pandora, he was a pioneer of state-of-the-art visual effects. Case in point: Terminator 2: Judgment Day is credited for having the first CGI character in a blockbuster, the T-1000 (Robert Patrick), a killing machine composed of a futuristic liquid metal. But Cameron also understood that the CGI of that era shouldn’t be the main attraction: It worked best as a complement to the practical effects, as seen in Judgment Day’s epic viaduct chase. When the T-1000 tracks down a young John Connor (Edward Furlong) in a shopping mall, he’s saved at the last minute by the Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger), giving John a chance to escape on his dirt bike. As the T-1000 gives chase, the David and Goliath vibes between man and machine are further epitomized by the T-1000’s commandeering of a truck. The sequence already has a terrifying sense of urgency, but it hits another level when the T-1000 crashes through the viaduct like the Kool-Aid Man:
Big Jim is still revolutionizing what can be achieved with visual effects in the Avatar franchise, and while I cherish those movies, nothing beats his old-school showmanship.

5. Duel (1971)

The feature-length debut of Steven Spielberg—perhaps you’ve heard of him—the TV movie Duel is essentially one extended chase sequence between salesman David Mann (Dennis Weaver) and a sinister trucker determined to drive him off the road. I’ve attached a clip from the ending of the film, but that doesn’t do Duel justice. What cements this movie’s greatness is how it sustains an unbearable level of tension across its 90-minute running time—with a budget under $500,000, no less. Spielberg’s masterstroke is never once showing us the other driver, anthropomorphizing the truck itself as a monster. (You can see a lot of similarities with how he would build suspense in Jaws.) When Mann finally gets the upper hand, tricking his adversary into driving off a cliff, it feels like you can breathe again:
Spielberg would move on to bigger and better things after Duel, but considering how much the director accomplished with so little, you can’t help but wonder what else he could conjure up with limited resources.

4. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Like Duel, Fury Road is basically one long car chase—the difference is Miller got to work with a blockbuster budget, and made every cent of it count. It’s hard to pick a single standout sequence in Fury Road, but if I had to choose, I’d go with the first attack on the War Rig after Furiosa (Charlize Theron) flees with the wives of Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). Here’s why: Think back to when you saw Fury Road for the first time, before you fully grasped the vehicular carnage that was in store. And then stuff like this kept happening:
To quote Steven Soderbergh’s thoughts on Fury Road: “I don’t understand how they’re not still shooting that film and I don’t understand how hundreds of people aren’t dead.” Whether or not Miller manages to one-up the action in Furiosa, the director is already in the pantheon.

3. The French Connection (1971)

We return to the Friedkin-verse for what may be his best film, The French Connection, the crime thriller based on Robin Moore’s 1969 nonfiction book of the same name. The story concerns two NYPD detectives, Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle (Gene Hackman) and Buddy “Cloudy” Russo (Roy Scheider), and their tireless pursuit of a French heroin smuggler. But while there’s plenty to admire about how The French Connection illustrates the thin line between police and criminals, its greatest claim to fame is its car chase. After Popeye narrowly survives a sniper attack, he goes after the shooter, who escapes on an elevated train. The ensuing sequence is true daredevil filmmaking that Friedkin shot without permits, leading to real crashes with New Yorkers that made the final cut. But Friedkin’s finest touch was mounting a camera to the front of the car, making the audience feel like they’re part of the action:
My Ringer colleague Justin Sayles believes The French Connection’s chase should’ve landed at no. 1, and I’m sure many folks will agree with him. Being the only film on this list to win Best Picture, however, is a solid consolation prize.

2. Bullitt (1968)

When it comes to modern car chases, all roads lead back to Bullitt. A Dad Cinema classic, the film stars Steve McQueen as Frank Bullitt, a San Francisco detective who pursues a group of mobsters after a key witness is killed in protective custody. In his search for answers, Bullitt realizes he’s being tailed by a couple of hitmen, and then turns the tables on them. From there, the chase is on. Aside from McQueen doing most of his own stunts behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang GT 390 Fastback, what’s so impressive about the sequence is how timeless it is. Even the little imperfections, like hubcaps repeatedly coming off the wheels, work to the film’s advantage, stressing just how much these drivers are living on a razor’s edge. It’s been more than 50 years since Bullitt revolutionized the car chase, and yet few movies since have felt like they’re pushing the envelope to such an exhilarating degree:
That the car driven by McQueen was recently sold at auction for $3.74 million, a then-record price for a Mustang, underlines Bullitt’s enduring legacy.

1. Ronin (1998)

“If I’m going to do a car chase,” filmmaker John Frankenheimer said in an interview with the American Society of Cinematographers, “I’m going to do a car chase that’s going to make somebody think about whether or not they want to do another one!” Boy, did he ever. In Frankenheimer’s late-career masterpiece, Ronin, the director actually incorporated several chases, but it’s the climactic sequence that stands alone as the greatest ever filmed. The movie concerns an international group of mercenaries who are hired to steal a mysterious briefcase; a series of double-crosses and double-bluffs ensue. But for the final chase, all you need to know is that Sam (Robert De Niro), a mercenary with ties to the CIA, is in pursuit of Deirdre (Natascha McElhone), an IRA operative in possession of the case. Winding through the streets and tunnels of Paris, what’s most striking is just how fluid it all feels. You’re completely engrossed in the chase’s forward momentum, captured from every conceivable angle; a symphony of controlled chaos. The driving styles even reflect the characters: Deirdre is reckless and impulsive, while Sam remains calm and controlled.
There are many worthy car chases in this ranking, but in my view, Ronin takes pole position. And while I can’t imagine a movie ever topping what Frankenheimer achieved, I’d love nothing more than to be proved wrong.

ET Max 100 Mile Review
So, new wheel without many consumer reviews on YouTube or anywhere else. Haven’t seen any written on here yet so here goes!
I’ll start by saying that I am in no way a Begode fanboy; I actually prefer Veteran wheels :D
The reason I bought another euc after owning a Patton at the end of last summer is because I sold it for a motorcycle. I’m a bit of an adrenaline junky, so I feel like that’s a pretty substantial progression. I recently got in an accident, though. My bike was already an R title, so even with small issues like cracks in the fairings, my insurance company called it a total loss. I got more money back than I bought it for, but I wanted to save up a little more over the summer to get a nicer one eventually. I didn’t wanna stay inside while waiting, so an euc was my saving grace.
I got my ET on Friday, May 10th. Crazy story actually; I was actually looking to buy the EX30 as I couldn’t really afford any of this year’s offerings (GT Pro, Lynx, ET). Alien Rides had it on sale for $2700 opposed to $3600 on my usual website, EWheels. I buy the EX30 and instantly get an email stating that they were actually sold out of the EX, but they could offer me a used floor model EX for less, or a refund. I knew I wanted to sell the wheel at the end of the summer to get a new bike after saving a bit, so I didn’t want any extra miles. I declined and asked for the refund, but then I struck gold.
Alien Rides must really care about customer loyalty, because they offered me an ET max for the SAME PRICE as the EX30 on sale. $2,700, no more no less. I asked for the Lynx, but they said they didn’t order as many of those so they couldn’t offer the same deal. Honestly, I’m kinda happy because the ET is supposedly much more stable at high speeds, can go faster, and omfg the design language is GORGEOUS. I probably have the “cheapest” ET Max in the world (lol). I wasn’t going to pick this option if there were any early batch issues, but both eWheels and Alien Rides said that none of the ET’s they’ve sold have had a single issue.
As soon as I tried lifting the box inside from the porch, I realized that this thing was substantial. This was much harder than lifting the Patton box, and I didn’t know if I could handle it (I’m 6’ 160lbs btw, so pretty skinny).
After doing a check on tire psi (IMPORTANT as Begode tends to overinflate), playing with linkage settings, and applying the surprisingly good Velcro (either Alien Rides replaced the shitty Begode Velcro or this batch had better included Velcro), I took the wheel out for its first spin. It had been about 4 or 5 months since I’ve been on a wheel, but I acclimated to the ET unbelievably quickly. I told myself I wasn’t going to ride on main roads but I was already pushing mid 40’s in traffic 10 minutes in. It’s THAT easy to feel comfortable on this wheel.
Maybe my legs were tired on day two, but I was doing similar speeds and got insanely bad wobbles. Like, my feet would’ve come off the pedals if it weren’t for the great spiked pedals (I don’t really see the need to upgrade personally). Luckily I’ve been able to save every single wobble I’ve gotten after I learned the invisible chair braking technique. No bad wobbles after this; totally could’ve been user error.
I am now on day 4 with over 100 miles on the odometer, and I’ve only had to charge it twice. Riding with hard acceleration at fast speeds got me 37.7 miles with 30% battery left. It’s noticeably better than my Patton, at least it feels like it. I’m sure that once I’m comfortable pushing this wheel to its full potential, that number will only go down with my super hilly terrain. Also keep in mind that voltage climbed back up to that 30% after resting, and it was more like 20% at the end of my ride giving me beeps at around 35-40mph.
I only have a single issue and one minor gripe so far:
  • With medium hardness and zero pre-set horizontal tilt, the pedals like to tilt up a bit at both high speeds and sudden up’s and down’s. This isn’t noticeable to me with full pedal hardness and -1 tilt though. Could be fixed with a firmware update, so I’m not bothered.
  • More of a gripe, but the suspension makes clunking noises. I only mind because my Patton’s FastAce suspension was super quiet and smooth, but this suspension is still adequate after being spoiled like that. I’m 160 and the 1300lb spring is pretty alright if you nearly fully unscrew the spring tensioning ring. I’ve been told that the psi of the air chamber doesn’t matter too much and is only mandatory for the functionality of compression and dampening. Recommended psi is 50-100.
Other than those pretty insignificant cons, this wheel is a BEAST. I thought I was pushing it up hills, but when I started checking the PWM on DarknessBot I realized that I could push it so much harder. I was doing an absolute disservice to this thing, but now that I’ve gotten out and really given it a thrash, I gotta say that it’s unbelievable. You have enough high-speed power to pass cars in 45+mph traffic, and blast up hills without a single issue. Hell, even the stock pads feel great. They aren’t the best for locking your foot in, but they get the job done seeing as this wheel isn’t really meant for offroad use. It’s enough to hop curbs and hold you in if you’re accelerating so hard that you’re on your tip-toes.
By far, this is the best option on the market if you ever sell, crash (in my case), or can’t afford a motorcycle and still want that feeling of insane adrenaline. The acceleration, cornering, braking, and feeling of substantial-ness between your feet is unreal. I 100000000% recommend to just go for it. No need to wait for later batches; get it.
Please ask anything at all in the comments!

2024.05.08 17:40 LabioscrotalFolds Two separate hit-and-runs left a pedestrian in critical condition and another dead this week in Durham.

From Bike Durham yesterday:
I have tough news to share. [Monday] night and early [yesterday] morning, two people were hit by drivers while walking. One man is in critical condition after a driver hit him and left the scene last night at North Miami Boulevard near Raynor Street. Early [yesterday] morning, another man was killed after he was hit by a driver who fled on North Roxboro Street, just north of Club Boulevard. Both of these tragedies occurred on state-maintained streets where the most severe traffic violence occurs due to higher driving speeds.
This stretch of North Roxboro Street is included in the Durham Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission's recent letter to City Council, County Commission, and NCDOT requesting a conversion of North Roxboro Street from 4 lanes to 3. According to crash data, this is the most dangerous section of North Roxboro, and one of the most dangerous streets in the city. We support their recommendations as part of a goal to make the entire length of Roxboro Street safe for all users. The section of Roxboro and Mangum where we've been pushing for a conversion to two-way traffic is just the first step in addressing the entire corridor.
Speaking of the section of Roxboro and Mangum, on April 26, the Indy published an article that first ran in the 9th Street Journal entitled "Reckless Roxboro May Get a Revamp if Locals Can Persuade NCDOT". I encourage you to read the article by Esmé Fox and pay attention to the troubling quotes by NCDOT district engineer John Sandor. You can read my full response to this article, as well as the letter to the editor that I submitted at today's blog post.

2024.05.07 23:42 Vapperdaeve Working Glitches + FAQ Post

This is the Working Glitches Section! This is always being improved, and if you have any recommendations please let me know in the comments or send me a direct message. If you know a glitch is working on any other platform I haven't included or doesn't work anymore, also let us know. If a platform is in italics, it means it is unsure. If a platform is just "Xbox" or "PlayStation", that means that it works with both old gen and new gen versions of the game.

2024.05.04 00:31 shoegazing_puncheur UHP vs All Season tyres for safety (not performance)

Ok, clarifying the perhaps confusing title…!
I’m looking for a new set of tyres for my Zafira Tourer and trying to understand what makes the most sense. As the car type suggests, I’m not a sporty driver, simply lug around my young family and sometimes my bike and want to do so safely.
Looking at sensible price vs performance options, the GT Radial Sport Active 2 get great reviews citing great wet weather performance, with an A rating for wet braking. They are however summer tyres and possibly rated highly for far more demanding circumstances than my own.
On the other hand, Kormoran All Seasons also get very good reviews most of which mention good wet weather performance and are as quiet as the GT Radials. The wet braking score is lower however, but should the fact they are all season vs summer mean they might well outperform the GT Radials as the mercury drops?
Essentially, which of the two makes the most sense for my case in your opinion? What other tyres might I look at within that price range? The high marks of the GT Radials convinced me to begin with, but the fact the Kormorans are over £20 less per tyre and all season (UK weather is often below 7C after all) make them look a good bet for an MPV.

Which one for mostly paved rail trails and maybe light dirt trails?
First bike I’ll own in a long time. I plan on riding 80% of the time on paved trails or roads, but definitely want the flexibility of taking it off road a bit (Upstate NY). All of these would fit me. Ideally I wanted to stay around $200 but the Trek seems like a good deal? Sorry for some weird photos / collages. Please share your thoughts and thank you!
1) Trek Verve Disc 2 - $400 2) Schwinn Dual Sport - $170 3) GT ZUM - $275 4) Diamondback Axis - $195

2024.04.27 10:36 AC-fan Would this Cult Devotion complete make a good FGFS base?

I want to get into FGFS and wondered if buying this bike complete could be a good entry to the discipline?

Also, since I don't own any BMX part, this would make it fairly easy to setup without hjaving to source everything.
Lastly, I already have H+Son archetypes on a track fixed gear with BLB king hubs, that I'd swap on the Cult.
Thanks a lot in advance for your help !

Need help distinguishing hubs and more info about the bike!
Hello, I’m brand new to the BMX world coming from road and MTB riding. Picked up this beauty for cheap to dip my toes into the hobby and need some help. I know bikes well and work on my own but I quickly learned how BMX bikes are very different LOL.
I cannot seem to find this exact bike anywhere on google for more information. Based off of the stickers, it’s a GT Performer in size 20.75 with a wheel size of 20 inches. I have no idea what year or specifics about it.
Looking to replace some bearings, chain, and get some pegs!
Thank you all for the help

2024.04.23 07:10 219MTB 2024: Mountain Bike FAQ Guide - Part 1 - Suspension, Bike/Race Type, Drivetrains, Wheel-size, and More

Hello All,
Welcome to my FAQ posts. Over at MTB and other cycling subs there are common questions that pop up on a regular basis. My goal with these pages if to have a resource to answer those common questions. I will attempt to maintain and modify this document going forward but I am also open to recommendations, suggestions, or request. Feel free to comment on the post or send me a message!

In addition to this guide I have a second FAQ and a Bike Buying Guide

Helpful Links

In these FAQs and Buyers guide I have tried to cover a broad variety of topics, but for others there are already fantastic pre-existing resources. This section is used for links to other websites and articles that I have found helpful or provide information on topics I don't have the knowledge to cover in depth. Some topics I'd like to eventually add myself or via links include general info on wheels (material, bearings, spokes, etc), cockpit systems like I-spec, matchmaker, etc.
Suspension platforms: VPP, Maestro, Horst-Link, Single Pivot etc.
Suspension Lineups for Fox and Rockshox
Suspension Tuning and Setup
Boost Spacing and everything that goes along with it

Where can I find details about local trails?

The best sources for finding trails are:
  • Trailforks which is owned and operated by Pinkbike.com It has a smartphone app as well as a website. The app is fantastic as you can download maps for offline viewing (read: when your in the lost in the middle of nowhere with no service, you can still view maps). They often have reviews, photos, and other valuable details for these trails.
  • MTB Project is much the same as Trailforks in that they have an app, website, and you can download offline maps. Really they do the same thing, but sometimes one is better then another for a certain trail system or area. I also tend to find MTB Project has better descriptions of the trails. Personally, I'd have both.
  • Strava Heatmaps is a little different. This isn't an organized app with specific trails or routes. What it shows is "heat" or hot areas where people ride a lot. This can help you find systems you may not have known about and some more "off the grid trails". Obviously be careful with those and try to get permissions from landowners to ride in unofficial trails.
  • Facebook: Trails or general riding areas often have very active social media communities and groups. These groups are often the best place to find out about trails, conditions, and other events going on in your vicinity.
  • Trail system-specific pages also exist which can give you really good details that go beyond whatTrailforks, Facebook groups, etc may offer.. My favorite example of one like this is the Trail Genius page for Copper Harbor, Michigan. It has videos of every trail along with statistics and other details.
  • Talk to employees and people at local bike shops. Talking to real locals and riders is going to get you some great info.

What are the different types of bikes, which one should I get?

I'm going to use Santa Cruz mountain bike lineup as an example for each of these bikes categorys as they have a very broad lineup with a bike in every group.
Downhill: 100/0 descending/climbing
As the name implies, these are strictly for downhill riding. You use a lift or shuttle to get you to the top of the run/trail. They are next to impossible to do any climbing on.
  • Dual Crown Fork
  • ~180+ mm of travel front and rear
  • Wider hubs sometimes and beefier components/wheels.
  • Downhill specific drivetrain often with a narrow range of gears and DH specific groups.
  • Powerful brakes and tough tires.
  • Fixed seat post dropped low
  • All this means heavier.
  • Physically different geometry such as more raked out fork to help with going downhill fast.
  • Always a full suspension as far as I know.
  • Example: Santa Cruz V10 200mm+ MX (Mixed Wheels) or 29er"
Enduro/All Mountain Bike:
A burlier trail bike typically. If a trail bike is 50/50 climb/descent an enduro/all-mountain bike is closer to 60/40 or 70/30 descending/climbing.
Enduro/All-mountain bikes typically have:
  • 150mm+ Travel front and rear.
  • Typically Single crown forks, but with beefy 35mm+ stanchions on the fork.
  • Wide range drivetrain for climbing and descending
  • Dropper post
  • Weight is still a big consideration so tires, wheels, are lighter, etc.
  • Typically full suspension, but there are a few hardtails that can fall into this category.
  • Slacker head tube angle to favor descending.
  • Example: Bronson 150mm MX Wheels
  • Example: Megatower 165mm 29"
  • Example: Nomad 170mm MX Wheels
Trail Bike:
The "right" bike for most people, can climb as well as it descends and good in nearly all locations except the craziest of trails. We will say 50/50 climb/descend capabilities.
XC Bike: Generally, XC bikes are for racing or the very entry-level mtb. They excel at climbing and going fast. 60/40 or 70/30 climb-descend. They are not as much fun IMO in most situations, however, over the last few years, high-level cross-country racing has been getting more technical with bigger features and rocks. This has lead to XC bikes getting more capable and more travel. In turn this has led to lots of XC bikes becoming really good all-around trail bikes.
That's some rough guidelines...however as we go through time, all these lines are getting more blurred. XC bikes are getting longer travel and slacker as they go as engineers learn how to make more efficient platforms.
There are some other subcategories of bikes like free-ride and dirt jumpers. People also sometimes divide Enduro and All-Mountain into two categories, but to me, it becomes a little much. There is also the recent trend of down-country bikes, these are essentially long travel xc bikes that are still a blast to ride downhill but pedal really well and are fast on the climbs and XC type trails. I'm sure there are ones I'm missing, but these cover the basics.

On that note, here are some details on different race types which usually goes along with the above bike types.

Downhill/DH
As the name implies these are strictly downhill races. There is one course and riders are given practice runs and typically get one official run to get their best time. These races always use downhill bikes as there is little to no uphill segments and the only real pedaling will be done to get more speed for the next feature or segment of trail.
Enduro
Enduro racing has its origin in long cross country (hence enduro/endurance) motocross racing. In mountain biking, an Enduro race is a stage race where only certain downhill segments are timed. These times are ranked and added up to determine the winner. In between these timed stages you have un-timed transfer stages in which you have to get to the next starting point. Although they are not timed in terms of your score, you do have a limit on how long it takes you to get to each stage. So for example, you may do 25 miles of riding, but only 5 miles of it may be timed the whole day. In Enduro racing, they typically use 150-180mm travel bikes. They are usually downhill focused but still have the ability to climb as I mentioned above. Prior to the "Enduro" format, these were typically called All-Mountain bikes or Freeride bikes. This is where the confusion comes in, as now some companies are dividing these up into their own separate categories. The only one I think that makes a bit of sense is Freeride which to me is essentially a slightly pedal-able DH bike.
Cross-County/XC (Not to be confused with CX which is cyclocross)
XC is the traditional race format in mountain biking. It involves varying length courses or circuits. It usually contains laps. All riders start at the same time (or group with similar skill level riders) and is really the only racing that involves passing when it comes to mountain biking. In general, for a while it seemed to be declining in popularity, however thanks to colleges and high schools starting their own NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) clubs and more technical pro racing, it seems to be making a resurgence and is great for the sport as a whole. Also, of late more casual backcountry XC races are gaining popularity. Such as the ones put on by Epic rides. These are less competitive fun days on the bike. They are usually in varying lengths depending on what you choose and are not circuits. So for example in Bentonville, Ark they have the OZ Trail's offroad. This is either a 15,30,50 mile race and you typically never ride the same section of trail twice. In my opinion, these and enduro races are the most fun and casual days on the bike. In races like those put on by Epic rides, often time a trail bike is the best tool for the job.

- Why run 1x?

In the last 10 years, nearly all real mountain bikes have gone to 1x drivetrains. There are many benefits to this.
Pros
  • Simpler shifting and setup. Not having to think about changing the front ring simplifies the riding experience and you don't have to mess around with adjusting a front derailleur which can be tricky.
  • Fewer chain drops (assuming you're running a rear derailleur with a clutch or a chain retention device.)
  • Lighter weight
  • More flexible frame design as you don't need to worry about a mounting point for a front derailluer
Cons
  • At this point, there really are none.

- Tire/Wheel Size

First off, there is not a "best" wheel/tire size. It really comes down to personal preference. I personally have owned a trail bike with 27.5 and loved it, and my current bike is a 29er trail bike. If I were to go with an XC bike it would be a standard 29" bike. If I'm talking trail hardtail, there are good arguments for 29er, mixed wheel size, or 27.5+ So this decision should be based on what you like, where you are riding, and what your goals for the bike are. Along with that, there has been a trend of mixed wheel size. Essentially running a 29" wheel up front with a 27.5" in the rear. The theory is you get some of the best of both worlds. So whatever works for you, enjoy it! When it comes down to it though, there isn't a huge difference between the 3 main options. If you find a great deal or a bike you really like but wasn't the wheel size you anticipated, don't let that stop you.
29"/700c
At this point the 29" wheels has become the default industry standard.
Pros
  • Faster once up to speed and can maintain speed better
  • Better attack angle when approaching obstacles
  • Great for taller riders
Cons
  • Slower to accelerate
  • Heavier, sometimes leading to a less flickable/playful bike.
  • Larger wheel can essentially change the final gearing of the bike. 11-42 might be plenty on a 27.5" bike but bump up to 29 and you might be wishing you had some more range.
27.5"/650b
In the early to mid 2010s it was seen as a happy medium between the big 29er wheels and the older 26" Size. Today the number of pure 27.5" bikes is very small, as 27.5 has been mostly relegated to the rear wheel in mixed wheel setups.
Pros
  • Lighter and quicker accelerating then 29er, but less so compared to 26"
  • Sometimes it can lead to a more maneuverable playful bike feel.
  • 27.5 is still often relegated to smaller size frames
Cons
  • Doesn't hold speed as well as 29er
  • Lesser attack angle compared to a 29er
MX/Mixed Wheel Size - "Mullet"
Mixed wheel size is exactly what you might expect. 29er front wheel with a 27.5 rear wheel. This in theory allows you to combine the best of both worlds. The 29er front wheel gives you the better attack angle allows you to go over larger obstacles easier and faster while the smaller and lighter 27.5 wheel in the rear makes a more playful and maneuverable bike. This has become a very common setup on more downhill and park focused bikes.
Other
  • 26" - Prior to 29er and 27.5, 26" was the main wheel size for the trail, DH, and Cross country bikes. 26" hasn't really been in the picture for the last 10 years other than fat bikes, dirtjumpers, and Slopestyle bikes.
  • Fatbike - Fatbike tires and wheels are usually on 26" rims, but typically are 3.0" or larger in diameter. While these can be ridden on dirt and normal trails just fine, they really shine in the sand, snow, and other loose diverse conditions. Look at the 27.5+ pro's and con's and just amplify those both.
  • 27.5+ This is a halfway option between fat bike and standard 27.5 tires. It's typically a 27.5 wheel/rim that is 35+mm wide and supports wider tires in the 2.8-3" range. This approx. gives you the same outer diameter as a 29er wheel. There was a period of time that lots of bikes were coming with this, but it mostly has faded away. It did some things well such as loose conditions and providing lots of grip, but it also had downsides of easily rolling over and feeling kinda bouncy and floaty.
  • 29+ - Same as 27.5+ but on a 29er wheel instead. The only example I can think of this is the Trek Stache and Full Stach.
  • There are other sizes too for kids bikes, BMX, dirt jumping, cyclocross, etc but the ones above cover the main mtb standards.

- Understanding Mountain Bike Drivetrains

Groupset Hierarchy
First off, my opinion does come into this a bit as any sort of ranking is purely subjective. This has also gotten a whole lot more complex with the introduction of SRAM AXS and T-Type transmissions and Shimano's lack of a 12 speed modern electronic option. I have not included any of the standard SRAM AXS drivetrains in this hierarchy table, but in general they offer a similar level of performance as the mechanical SRAM Eagle levels with the benefits of electronic shifting. I tried to use weight and price to get the general ranking and using personal experience along with generalizing many reviews. I gathered my prices and weights from a number of reviews and manufacturer websites. It was difficult to gather this information as it had to come from multiple sources, and I can't guarantee it is all 100% accurate but I tried my best.
SRAM Weight Price Shimano Weight Price
XX-SL T-Type 1505g $2200
XX T-Type 1732g $2050
XO T-Type 1900g $1600
GX T-Type 2015g $1100 XTR 12 Speed 1644g ~$1300
XX1/XO1 Eagle Mech 1502g/1535g $1400
XT 12 Speed 1749g ~$600
GX Eagle Mech 1747g ~$500 XT 11 Speed Linkglide NBD NBD
SLX 12 Speed 1932g ~$410
Deore 12 Speed 2201g ~$300
NX Eagle 2050g ~$400 Deore 10/11 Speed TBD TBD
SX Eagle 2328g ~$320 Cues 9/10 Speed TBD TBD
There are also some more niche drivetrains I thus far haven’t got into such as the downhill-specific groups like Saint and Zee from Shimano, SRAM's DH specific 7 speed X01, and e-bike specific groups.
There are other drivetrains manufacturers that are less common such as Rotor, Box, Microshift, Trp that offer some compelling options. The options that I'm most interested in are the 9 speed drivetrains with clutches which I believe both Box and Microshift offer. These are compelling options for upgrading older bikes with (1,2,3)x9 drivetrains
Recent drivetrain changes
Mountain biking has gone through some drastic changes in the last 10 years and that doesn't exclude drivetrains. The most obvious change is the switch to 1x drivetrains. While riders have been experimenting with 1x setups for years, SRAM became the first company to make a from the ground up 1x groupset with their 2013 XX1 1x11 groupset. The keys to these 1x groupsets are the narrow-wide chainring which is a front chainring with alternating size teeth that fit into the alternating size links in the chain, wide-range cassettes (11-42 or larger) that gives you the same or more then a 2x drivetrains, and clutched rear derailleurs. Shimano was actually the first company to introduce a clutch on their 2x10 XTR drivetrain back in 2012 which helped reduce chain slap by holding the cage and chain tight, while still allowing smooth shifting. SRAM soon started adding clutches to their drivetrains which allowed for the creation of their first OEM 1x groupset. In my opinion, if looking at both new, used, or upgrading your bike, I would not recommend any sort of drivetrain that does not feature a rear derailleur with a clutch.
Shimano's Current MTB Lineup
  • XTR 1x12 drivetrain M9100 - 1644g @ $1385 - (Technically also 2x12/2x11 options) Shimano’s current flagship product. Introduced in 2018, it offers a 10-45 11 and 12 speed and 12 speed 10-51 rear cassettes. The 10-51 cassette offers slightly more range than SRAM’s Eagle drivetrains. To fit these new cassettes with the 10t cog Shimano had to introduce there own freehub body standard known as Microspline. Microspline is essentially Shimano's answer to XD. Unfortunately, this means if you are looking to upgrade an older bike you will likely either need a new wheelset, hub, or at minimum a new freehub driver body. Most mainstream wheel/hub manufacturers have started offering Microspline, but you will need to research out if your hub is capable of the upgrade or an entirely new one will be needed. One of the key features of all the new 12 speed Shimano drivetrains is Hyperglide+. This is the new chain and cassette technology that is supposed to drastically improve shifting under load. The features of this groupset trickle down to Deore. This is arguably the best mechanical drivetrain on the market in terms of shifting performance.
  • XT 1x12 drivetrain M8100 - 1749g @ $623 - Shimano’s second-tier groupset. Introduced in 2019 with a 12 speed 10-45 and 10-51 and 2x is an option if that floats your boat. In general, this is widely considered the sweet point in Shimano’s lineup. Giving you all the performance of XTR with a minor weight penalty and significant cost savings.
  • SLX 1x12 drivetrain M7100 - 1932g @ $410 - Shimano’s third tier groupset. Introduced the same time as XT with both 10-45 and 10-51 cassettes offered. This is Shimano’s mid range 12-speed drivetrain. Again, offers similar performance to XT with some ergonomic changes, fewer adjustments and refinement, and again, more weight. One major change in this group is in the shifter. You lose the multi-release ability that XT and XTR have that allows you to upshift multiple gears with one lever throw. This is a great value groupset and probably the best choice for the serious recreational rider. If you throw an XT Shifter into this groupset, I personally think it's the sweet spot in terms of performance/value.
  • Deore 1x12 drivetrain M6100 - 2201g @ $298 - Shimano's Entry Level 12 speed groupset is the newest release from Shimano and as with XT and SLX, it continues the direct trickle-down effect from XTR. As with SLX it is a 1x12 speed groupset with a 10-51t cassette using the Microspline freehub body standard. For the most part, the only difference between SLX and Deore is the weight. Most of that coming in the crankset and cassette. The cassette, for example, uses all-steel cogs instead of some aluminum ones to save weight. Shimano has also chosen to make an updated version of Deore in 10-speed and 11-speed options which have an optional front derailleur for a 2x setup. There are little details on these versions of the groupset, but we can assume they will be cheaper and more budget-oriented, but still nicer than the lower end Shimano MTB groupsets like Altus, Acera, Alivo, etc
  • Value Groups - In addition to the mainstream Shimano mtb groups I listed above, Shimano offers a handful of other groups mainly focused on the budget side of things. First off you have 10 and 11 speed versions of Deore that are still being produced and sold. They do not have the benefits of HyperGlide+ but they are still extremly solid 1x clutched drivetrains. In addition to that Shimano also offers their Linkglide Family. The top end of this family is the 11 Speed Shimano XT Linkglide. It shifts essentially as good as the high end Hyperglide+ stuff and offers nearly the same range, but is much more durable. It's sacrificing some weight to be long lasting and tough. This makes it really ideal for e-bikes or people who just want to spend less time messing around with their bike and just ride. In addition to being more durable, it also uses a standard HG Freehub body so you don't need to mess with a Microspline freehub. Makes it a great upgrade for older bikes. Below the XT Linkglide group, they also have the rest of the CUES family which are 9/10/11 speed drivetrains for anything from Trekking and Urban riding to mountain biking.
  • General Shimano notes - In general, Shimano is more known for their smoother less direct feeling drivetrain. They also offer slightly different ergonomics. On SRAM shifting it’s all down with the thumb, on Shimano you can use both your thumb and index fingers to shift and the finger levers move in both directions to accommodate different shifting positions. On XT and XTR you also get the benefit of being able to upshift and downshift multiple cogs with a single lever throw. On lower-end Shimano and all SRAM groups, when going into a hardehigher gear it's one-click for one cog. It should also be noted that all of Shimano's 12-speed groupsets are fully compatible with other components of the same speed. Meaning you could run a 12 speed XT shifter with a 12-speed Deore drivetrain to get the multi-release shifting without spending the money for a full XT groupset.
SRAM’s Current Lineup
  • T-Type/Transmission Sram has made some drastic changes to mountain bike drivetrains in the last couple years with their Transmission or T-Type Drivetrains. These new drivetrains are a pretty major departure from prior drivetrains. The biggest change is how the derailleur mounts to the bike. Instead of using a derailleur hangar to attach the derailleur to the bike, T-Type drivetrains mount directly to the frame. (This requires a frame that supports a Universal Derailleur Hangar or UDH). The direct mount method has given SRAM some unique benefits. By removing the hangar, they were to accomplish two major things. First, they were able to remove any extra play in the system that a derailleur hangar normally introduces which allows for extremely high precisions shifting, and essentially makes every single T-Type setup exactly the same. This has made limit screws and b-tension adjustments thing of the past. You simply need to make sure you have the correct size chain (SRAM has documentation for all T-Type compatible bikes to tell you how many links you need) and follow the alignment marks on the derailleur itself. This direct mount system has allowed unmatched shifting performance. T-Type actually manages to shifter better underload then when not. It changes the way you ride as the idea of having to slightly reduce pressure on the pedals to shift is no longer needed. You can be putting as much power as you want into the pedals and it won't miss a beat. It's also so far been incredibly durable, despise some early concerns. The derailleur hangar was always viewed as a necessity to protect your frame or expensive derailleur from being damaged in a crash or impact. Because SRAM opted to mount directly to the frame, some were worried this would mean frame damage or an easily damaged and very expensive derailleur but that has not shown to be a problem. The derailleur is literally mounting to the rear axle of the bike which is one of the strongest points on the entire bike. It also wraps around both sides of the rear triangle for extra strength. In addition to the strong mounting point, SRAM electronic shifters for a while now have had the overload clutch. This is a system that allows the derailleur to move inward if there is an unexpected hit to the derailleur, then bounce right back into position without missing a beat. Last, but not least, the derailleur sits further inboard to the frame and closer to the rear wheel than any other derailleur, which means it's less likely to get hit in the first place. All these things combined have made the concerns a non-issue. There are literally videos of people standing on the derailleurs with no damage or issues as a result.
  • Before I get into some of the details on the groupsets, the first thing to know is that outside of weight, all of the transmission group sets perform almost identically. In addition to that, like Eagle groups before it, they are for the most part compatible within he series. Meaning most Transmission parts are cross compatible with other Transmission level groups. They have also made the derailleur itself very modular, meaning you can upgrade and replace parts from different levels of the group sets as you see fit. Lastly, the T-Type drivetrains are not at all compatible with earlier SRAM Eagle groups with the exception of the shifteremote.
  • SRAM XX-SL Transmission - 1505g @ $2199 This is SRAM's pure XC Race groupset. It is purely designed for racing in my opinion. It is not as durable as the other groups. Some of the key changes compared to XX include a carbon crankset with a hollow core to save some weight. According to SRAM it's the lightest crank on the market and has a light weight power meter options. It has a SL chain and light weight steel dome machined cassette for cogs 1-9 and cogs 10-12 made of aluminum to save some weight as well. Lastly the XX SL Derailleur features a carbon pulley cage and something SRAM calls the Magic Wheel. This is a lower pulley wheel where the outer teeth can spin indepentitly from the inner spokes. This allows the pulley to keep on spinning even if something get's stuck in the spokes of the pulley wheel. SRAM does not recommend using the SL cassette or chain with e-bikes.
  • SRAM XX Transmission 1732g @ $2049 - XX is viewed as SRAM's mainstream top end group. It features a carbon crankset just like XX-SL, but puts a foam core inside to strength it. It also features an integrated and replaceable bash guard built right into the crankset, do you don't need to rely on your frame having ISCG mounting points. It can also be upgraded to a single based power meter. The XX Chain uses a hollow pin flat-top design and according to SRAM is their strongest chain ever. (I believe it, as their prior Eagle XX and XO chains were already the longest lasting in the industry.). It also has a light weight machined cassette with 38t and 44t stamped steel and an aluminum 12th gear. Last but not least the XX rear derailleur has an alloy pulley cage as opposed to carbon, but still features the Magic Wheel lower pulley.
  • SRAM XO Transmission 1900g @ $1599 - SRAM's second from the top groupset and aimed at e-bikes, enduro and heavier duty trail bikes. The main difference in this group is the crankset. Past XO groups usually have carbon cranks, but with Transmission they decided to switch to alloy. Like the XX carbon cranks, it also has integrated bash guard built in and works with power spindle-based power meter. The chain has a different finish then the XX chain and solid pins for extra strength. The cassette also has the special Dark Polar finish with nickel plating for better resistance. The cassette consists of a 1-11 X-Dome cassette made of steel with an aluminum 12th cog. The XO derailleur is much the same as the other too with an alloy cage. It does however lack the Magic Wheel lower pulley.
  • SRAM GX Transmission 2015g @ $1099 - This is SRAM's most "affordable" T-Type group. The crankset is alloy, but a different design then the XO group. It's compatible with the XX-SL power meter as well as the bash guards. It uses a pinned together cassette for gears 1-8 and a single machined cluster for gears 9-12 with a nickel coating. The same goes for the chain. The GX derailleur has a revised design with a new gearbox and aa improved battery position that is more tucked away.
  • SRAM Eagle AXS XX1, X01, GX - SRAM is still currently selling their standard electronic AXS drivetrains. As with the Transmissions group sets, XX1 is the highest end and light weight group, X01 is the second from the top and more aimed at enduro and trail riding as opposed to XC, and GX is the budget option. Unlike the T-Type groups, the AXS stuff has far more in common with the traditional mechanical Eagle groupsets. Beyond the shifter's and the derailleurs the AXS stuff is fully compatible with the mechanical group sets and is a quick and easy upgrade from a standard mechanical Eagle group.
  • SRAM Eagle XX1, XO1, and GX. - Same as the above AXS groupsets, SRAM is still selling their mechanical Eagle group sets as well, but it seems unlikely they will be getting future updates now that Transmission has trickled down to the GX level. Below GX, SRAM is still all mechanical. Personally, I love the Transmission type drivetrain, but if you want to go mechanical, Shimano is the better choice. With that said, SRAM does have two lower end mechanical options I will briefly mention.
  • NX Eagle - Lower-end mainstream 1x12 option. - NX Eagle 2050g @ $375 - The major difference with this group versus GX Mechanical is the cassette. Instead of running a 10-50 XD based cassette you instead are given an 11-50 cassette that fits on a standard Shimano-HG freehub body. This cassette is also part of what makes NX much heavier than the higher-end groups. The NX crankset is made of 6000 series alloy as opposed to the lighter 7000 series alloy on the GX group and it has a lot more plastic parts on the shifter and derailleur such as an all-plastic shifter instead of carbon or alloy on the higher models. On the plus side, NX Eagle is a really good option for upgrading older bikes. For the most part, any semi-modern mountain bike can run NX Eagle drivetrain without needing to upgrade your wheelset with a modern XD freehub body.
  • SX Eagle - SRAM’s entry-level 1x12 drivetrain. - SX Eagle 2328g @ $330 - This is SRAM's lowest end group and is only sold to OEM. It's purely a budget point groupset to save manufactures a few bucks. It is functional, but I would not recommend it. Shimano's low end groups like CUES and Deore are a better options. This groupset has a heavy cassette, clunky shifter, very bad derailleur that still uses the larger cable loop as opposed to the more modern pulley system and usually has a SX crank which does not use the DUB standard bottom bracket. I would avoid this if possible.

Final Notes on drivetrains

So let's talk cassettes and freehub body/drivers.
  • Shimano/SRAM HG driver body - First off, the most common and traditional freehub body is the Shimano/SRAM HG freehub body. Up until the introduction of XD and Microspline it was really the only one in modern bikes. For the most part, all HG driver bodies are the same when it comes to mountain biking (there are differences when it comes to 11-speed road, but that's off-topic) which is great as it meant SRAM, Shimano, and other cassette builders all worked on the same wheelsets/hubs. So what this means you could interchange cassette manufacture all you like without really any downsides. To this day there are still many cassettes coming with this standard. All cassettes 7-10 speed and non-SRAM XD 11-speed cassettes will fit on this freehub body. Also, SRAM's lower end 11 speed and Eagle 12 speed SX and NX cassettes also fit on this. This is great news for people with older bikes. It gives them the option of upgrading to a modern high-end drivetrain without needing a new hub. You could put NX Eagle on pretty much any bike you want. It also opens up the new Shimano drivetrains to people as well as you could run an NX Eagle or another wide range HG cassette such as those made by Sunrace with your new SLX/XT/XTR drivetrain.
  • SRAM XD driver body - This as I mentioned above is SRAM's driver standard. The reason for the new standard was to allow a smaller cog then 11t. It was released in 2013 with XX1 11 speed which ran a 10-42 cassette. That one tooth reduction offered more top end and a wider range without having to make a much bigger cassette and added weight. It is an open platform that companies besides SRAM can use as well. e13, Sunrace, Garbaruk, and possibly others all now make XD cassettes. Some companies such as e13 are pushing the boundary even more by offering a 9 tooth cog on some cassettes. I personally am currently running a 9-46 e13 Trs+ 11-speed cassette which actually gives me a wider range than 12 speed Eagle does.
  • Shimano Microspline driver body - Introduced in 2018 with the release of XTR 12 speed, as SRAM did with XD with the release of XX1, Microspline allows the running of a 10t cog instead of the 11t of the older HG cassettes. This tech has trickled down to XT, SLX, and Deore as well, meaning if you want to run a true Shimano 12 speed group with the benefit of Hyperglide+ you will need to have a hub that has or accepts a Microspline driver. Due to its recent release, I am unsure of any companies beyond Shimano offering Microspline cassettes. I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

GT COMPE BMX MID/Shool Bike 20” eBay
GT Compe 4310 Mint Condition With rear pegs for sale.
Owning this bike was like a childhood dream. Rode it maybe 10 times in the 16 years I've had it.
It was a great stress reliever on intense days when I needed to feel the streets and the wind while living in St. Louis and Chicago.
I've outgrown this gem but its story doesn't have to end here. I'm currently relocating and downsizing. It's time for this badboy to create some new memories.
With the new skate park, I'm sure someone in Evansville has use for this amazing set of wheels. And has the skills to match its capabilities.
About the Bike:
"The GT Dyno Compe 4130 is a 20-inch BMX bike from 1998 that is made with 4130 chromoly and is designed for freestyle riding. The bike has a steel frame and all original parts. The 4130 Chromoly steel downtube makes up the frame, while the remaining tubes are made of high-tensile steel.
According to Pinkbike, a GT Compe 4130 black 20" bike is worth $700. Other sources say that GT Compe bikes can be worth between $449 and $2,900, depending on the model and condition.
For example, a 20" Dyno GT Compe D Freestyle bike is listed for $949, while a 1995 GT Compe BMX bike is listed for $2,900."
I've seen the bike rate price from $700-$2900 online.
Letting it go for $500 cash.
Minus a few scratches on the handle bars, it's in mint condition compared to some I've seen online going for higher prices.
I don't expect this to last long so it's first come first serve. I'd hate to have to pay for shipping so I'm posting this here hoping it finds a home in Evansville

2024.04.13 23:29 jonnyxskylines On my second go round with the game...

I originally bought the game and refunded it thirty minutes later upset with the clunkiness and difficulty of controls.
I then waited a few days and saw the effort the team behind the game were giving with updates and a price drop.
I repurchased the game last night and am still terrible and stuck in the spillway. But having a blast and can see past the tutorial that the game is really coming together and will be so much fun.
Question is how do I bring up the trick list or is there even one?
I am stuck on trying to do the turndown and gap tutorial.
I also do not understand how to complete the tutorial with the gateways all in crazy spots.
Any help would be appreciated and if you read this and feel frustrated at first just try and freeride in the spillway and you can start to develop tricks and lines on your own kinda.
Game runs so smooth now for the most part and the bike customization is really detailed and fun.
Big up's to the content creators on youtube for making vids that make the game look fun and keeping people interested.
And shoutout Mash for creating a bmx game that gives us a fun creative experience.
Let's get some real life sponsors behind and in game and really blow the lid off yeah?

2024.04.13 05:47 219MTB Mountain Bike Buying Guide: 2024 Update

Hey all, 219MTB (or the Redditor formally known as bmied31) here, and I'm attempting to start maintaining and updating my buying guide and FAQ posts again. I started getting into cycling about 10 years ago and was so lost. Over the last decade I've spent a lot of time learning about the industry and what makes a good bike. Every day I see dozens of posts asking what bike I should get, or what is a good value bike. I hope this guide can be used as a tool on this forum and others to help them find a bike they will be happy with for a long time. This is a living document. I will attempt to update it on a semi-regular basis and I'm always open to new bike recommendations.
In addition to this guide, I have created two FAQ's as well that answer common mountain bike questions.
FAQ 1 FAQ 2
u/midwestmountainbike also has some great guides on buying a first bike, what to look for in a used bike, as well as a selection of his own suggestions of good value bikes at this page.
MTB Authority

What to look for in a bike

When looking for a starter bike there are a few things I'd recommend that will get you onto a solid and safe bike that should be built to last and be worth upgrading as you see fit. Before we get started on talking bikes and prices, always make sure you're getting a bike that fits you. If the bike doesn't fit, it doesn't matter how good of a deal it is. Also, this guide is assuming you are intending on riding on actual mountain bike single track, not just smooth dirt paths and gravel. If that is all you are hoping for and don't plan on advancing beyond, any entry-level mountain bike from a major brand like a Trek Marlin 5 will do just fine, but if you are hoping to ride anything above green-rated singletrack, I'd suggest a more capable bike.
First, some rough price guidelines. As low as $500 should get you into a used but solid entry-level hardtail and about $900+ can get you a used but decent full suspension. In regard to new, you can double those prices. A new solid entry-level hardtail will be at likely be $900 and around $1800 for a decent full suspension bike.
Regarding used bikes, there are lots of places to look. Used bikes offer you a ton of value and is the best way to get the most for your money. You can get 2-year-old $4000 bikes for a huge discount. The most common places are Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Pinkbike, etc. You also can sometimes find great deals at local bike shops selling demo models (which often come with warranties) and rental fleets. Rental bikes are usually good options. They typically are well maintained and only have a season or two on them before they replace them with something newer. If you are new to the biking world and looking at used bikes, I'd recommend bringing along a friend who knows bikes or at least ask for advice on here. Lastly, if meeting someone, always be smart. I would recommend meeting at police station and bringing a friend. Now, let's get into the bikes.
Last but not least, people here are often willing to help narrow it down. Feel free to post on here a "which bike post" but follow the guidelines of this sub listed below.
  • The type of riding will you be doing.
  • Where you will be riding.
  • Your budget (with included currency).
  • What you like/didn't like about your current bike.
  • Your experience level and future goals.
In addition to that, if you are listing multiple bikes, please use 99Spokes.com to create a side by side comparison. Providing this side by side comparison will make other members of the sub much quicker to help.
These are the specs I’d look for at minimum as of 2024.
  1. Air fork: The cheapest fork I'd safely recommend is something like the SR Suntour XCR Air fork. Anything less than that from SR Suntour or RST is pretty much a pogo stick with poor damping and limited adjustability. The low-end RockShox coils aren’t terrible, but I'd shoot for air. Forks can be upgraded down the road but are often the single most expensive component on the bike.
  2. 1x Clutched Drivetrain: In the last 10 years there has been a shift to 1x drivetrains across the board. At this point, any slightly trail-worthy bike will have this type of drivetrain from the factory. To clarify what this means to those new or not familiar, 1x is when there is only 1 chainring/cog attached to the crankset instead of the more traditional 2 or 3. Bikes used to need multiple chainrings up front to allow for both high speed gears and low speed climbing gears. Now, with 1x drivetrains, the difference is made up by having a very large rear cassette. Most cassettes that come on mountain bikes now have a small cog of 10 or 11, and go all the way up to 52t on the large cog. This gives you the same amount of range as those old 3x8 bikes, but with less overlap and far more simplicity. Beyond simplicity, the advantages are less weight, less cables/derailleurs, less to think about when riding, and less chain drops etc. In addition to the larger cassette, 1x drivetrains feature a narrow-wide chainring (alternating size teeth to match the chain) which helps with chain retention and a clutched rear derailleur. The clutched rear derailleur provides extra tension on the chain to reduce chain slap and the odds of dropping a chain. For the most part, dropping a chain or it falling off the chainring while riding are a thing of the past.
  3. Hydraulic brakes This one is pretty simple, Hydraulic brakes use fluid to move pistons and squeeze down on the brake rotor to stop the bike as opposed to mechanical disc brakes that use a cable to actuate the pistons. This typically results in stronger braking, better modulation/control/and are self-adjusting. The only time I'd suggest mechanical brakes is for a bike packing/touring bike as they are easier to fix trailside. SRAM, Shimano, and Tetkro, all offer solid entry-level brakes.
The following aren’t as important but will help future proof the bike and make it a frame worth upgrading. If you get a bike with all these things, it's going to be rock solid for a longtime
  1. Tapered steerer tube: Most modern forks use a tapered steerer. If you get a bike with a lower-end fork/frame and want to upgrade down the road, it's easier if your bike has this. At this point this is pretty common in all but the cheapest of bikes.
  2. Thru-Axle wheels and Boost Spacing: In theory, both of these things offer higher levels of stiffness, but in reality, the biggest reason to make sure you have them is future upgradeability. Thru-axles also keep your wheels always aligned perfectly so you don't get as much disc brake rub as you would with Quick-Release axles.
  3. Tubeless Compatible Wheels: Going Tubeless is one of the most cost effective upgrades you can perform on a bike that will make the biggest difference. Some of the benefits of going tubeless include shedding weight, tires that are less likely to have flats, and the ability to run lower tire pressures which allows you to have more grip and better ride properties. If you ride on a regular basis, you should go tubeless. They may require a little more maintenance and can be a pain to mount/install, but the positives drastically outweigh the negatives.
  4. Dropper Post at this point is a necessity in my opinion but fortunately it can be added to nearly any frame, so I wouldn't make it a requirement on a bike as you can easily add it yourself. Dropper posts can be bought brand new for as low as $150. There are lots of options, but in my opinion OneUp, PNW, and some smaller brands like TransX and KS offer the best values.
  5. UDH/Universal Derailleur Hangar Compatible Frame. This one is purely convenience and future compatibility benefit, not really a performance upgrade. (Transmission excluded, more on that later) For those that don't know, all modern bikes feature a derailleur hangar. This is a sacrificial component on your bike that acts as an interface between your frame and your derailleur. If the derailleur takes a hit, the hangar is allowed to bend/break. The idea is if a softer part is allowed to bend or break first, it won't damage the frame and less likely to damage the derailleur. These hangars are usually $10-$20 bucks. Way better than a frame or derailleur in terms of repair cost. The problem however is that up until 2019 there was no agreed upon standard. Every bike had its own unique hangar for the and if you broke one you usually had to resort to ordering one online and waiting for it to come. In 2019 SRAM changed all that by introducing an open and shared design called the UDH. It was well thought out and designed and SRAM worked with most manufactures to get them to implement this on their bikes. At this point almost any high end bike is coming with this as standard. Because of that, most bike shops are going to carry this hanger, so you aren't forced into special ordering something. Also, SRAM was playing some 4-D chess with this UDH. If a bike has a UDH compatible frame, it also means it is compatible with SRAM new drivetrains called Transmission, which actually bypasses a derailleur hangar all together and mounts directly to the frame giving an extremely strong mounting point and extremely high precision shifting.

Value Bike Recommendations

Here are some solid entry-level bikes. Not all of them check off all my recommendations, but they all are solid for the price. I don't have first hand experience with all of them, but most bikes and options from legitimate bike brands are pretty solid.
Full Suspension (Cheapest ones that are still solid bikes IMO)
  1. Giant Stance (29er or 27.5) $1400+ - Check's off most boxes, but has a quick release rear axle which is not ideal.
  2. Marin Rift Zone 29 $1700+ - Solid Frame, lower end, but solid components. Main downside is the lack of a dropper post.
  3. Polygon Siskiu T7 27.5 or 29 depending on frame size $2000 - This bike is lacking nothing and check's off all my recommendations. The T8 is a solid upgrade as well.
  4. Giant Trance 2 29 $2000 - In my opinion, the best cheap bike at the moment. Check's off every box and get's you local bike shop support and a good warranty. The Trance X is an equally equipped bike with a little more travel if that's what you are looking for.
  5. Canyon Neuron $2300 - Solid bike trail bike. Check's off most boxes, but has a weak drivetrain with the SRAM SX groupset.
  6. Commencal Meta TR $1900 - Great frame, but has SX Groupset and is lacking Dropper post. Sale Price
  7. Specialized Status 140 $2250 - Hard hitting trail/enduro bike. Very high end components and lacking nothing. Sale Price
  8. Norco Fluid FS A4 $1900 - Pinkbike Value Bike of the Year in 2023. Missing nothing.
  9. Rocky Mountain Element A10 Shimano $2000 Another solid bike that checks all the boxes. Sale Price
  10. YT Jeffsy $2250 Solid Trail Bike that had everything you'd need. Sale Price
  11. YT Capra $2400 Probably one of the best budget enduro bikes. Sale Price
  12. YT Izzo $2300 Cheapest Carbon Full suspension bike you can get. Only downside is the SX Drivetrain. Sale Price
  13. GT Sensor Sport $1725 Appears to check all the boxes.
  14. GT Zaskar FS Comp $1800 Another solid option that checks all the boxes.
  15. Salsa Blackthorn Deore $2200 Sale Price.
Hard Tail (Cheapest ones that are still solid bikes IMO)
  1. Polygon Xtrada 7 $1100 - Solid bike, boost frame with air fork, but lacking a dropper post.
  2. Norco Fluid HT 2 $900 - Solid hardtail, great drivetrain, dropper post, but has a lower end fork.
  3. Salsa Rangefinder Deore 11 $1200 - Air Fork, Solid Drivetrain, Dropper Post. Unfortuantely no rear thru-axle
  4. Trek Roscoe 6+ $1200 This bike check's all the boxes, air fork, good drivetrain, boost spacing, dropper post. The Roscoe lineup as a whole is a good value.
  5. Specialized Fuse 27.5 $950 - Check's all the boxes.
  6. Marin San Quentin 29 $1400 Check's all the boxes in terms of components.
These are not all the options, but they are some better and more common budget/value bikes. This list is always changing, I try my best to update it, but it's difficult to keep up.
Last but not least make sure you save some of your budget for additional accessories that you will need
  1. Helmet
  2. Tire Pump (Most high-end bikes use a Presta valve, make sure the pump is compatible)
  3. Hydration (Either bottle cage and bottle or hydration pack of some sort.)
  4. Multi-tool with a chain breaker and basic tools.
  5. Tire irons/levers and spare tubes (and the knowledge of how to change both).
  6. Bike cleaning supplies, chain lube, etc. Taking care of an MTB can be a lot of work, but it will save you in the long run if you properly maintain your ride.
  7. Quick-link to repair a broken chain.
  8. Spare Derailleur Hangar.
Along with those required things, here are some things I'd highly recommend.
  1. MTB Platform shoes (or you can opt to go clipless).
  2. Tubeless tire kit. Most bikes come “tubeless ready” but don't come with them setup typically.
  3. Starter tool kit with the basic tools.
  4. Suspension pump assuming you have air suspension.
  5. Work stand
  6. Torque Wrench, especially with carbon parts
  7. Padded shorts or liner to wear under regular shorts.
  8. Gloves, Kneepads,Eye Protection.
