2024.05.14 20:04 TrulyDelulul How would a gender critical person define gender? Sex? Gender identity etc..

Personally, gender is merely a linguistic term that’s used in place of ‘sex’. Perhaps this is due to the English word ‘sex’ referring to both the state of being male/female and also an intimate physical act involving genitals but it’s often used as a more ‘polite’ form of sex for that reason.
I don’t think gender identity exists. I reckon ‘gender identity’ is nothing more than personality but the way TRA’s tell it, it sounds more like a soul. I don’t think it’s possible to ‘know’ that you’re meant to be a woman or a man. The only way I can see someone ‘knowing’ that they’re in the ‘wrong’ body would be if a mad scientist invented a machine that could seamlessly switch the brain and nervous system of one body into another body. For example, if a mad scientist kidnapped me and switched my brain and nervous system into the body of a middle aged Chinese man then I would ‘know’ I am in the ‘wrong’ body when I wake up and look myself in the mirror because I have a mental image of my face developed over many years of looking at that face in the mirror as it’s changed with age. I know the aches and pains of my body, I know the scars and burns and how I received them. Hence I have an actual experience being in the ‘right’ body for me to be able to identify immediately what is ‘wrong’ with the body the mad scientist has put me into. A trans person doesn’t have a similar sort of reference since they’ve never been in any body other than the one they have right now. Their frame of reference is really just stereotypes of what a man or a woman is supposed to be that they then wish to embody. But this is the opposite of what we should be striving for.
Now I certainly do believe that stereotypes of the genders exist and I think a few of them are due to our evolutionary biology (women being stereotyped as nurturing is due to the effects of oestrogen on pair bonding) but I think that most social stereotypes are projected onto the sexes rather than being something that arises from anything innate. During the Victorian era in England women were barred from medicine because they were viewed as being intellectually incapable of handling the stress. Yet for the last 30 years most new medical students in England have been women. Clearly the social stereotype that was projected onto women in the Victorian era was utterly false.
This raises the question, given that the social stereotype was that medicine was a man’s profession does then mean that the Victorian women who did want to become doctors were trans and they didn’t know it? Their gender identity clearly led them to wish to do something that only victorian men could do so maybe they were actually men in women’s bodies. Clearly that’s not the case. Women were not kept out of any profession because of a ‘gender identity’, they were kept out of the profession because they had particular types of bodies and identifying as a man would have made no difference since the stereotypes were projected onto pellle based on their sex.
For my part I find gender ideology to be convoluted, dishonest, and ultimately regressive. It ends up upholding the very stereotypes it claims to want to eliminate by reducing womanhood to a set of behaviours, styles, and manners. We see the dishonesty of the gender ideology movement whenever the definition of woman comes up for debate, or when sex segregated spaces are discussed. On one hand the ideologies claim that gender and sex are completely unrelated but then constantly push to blur the two by pushing trans people into spaces that have been carved out for women on the basis of sex. They want their cake and to eat it too.
My hope is that gender ideology can be defeated through rational argumentation and I believe that the fight back has already began and is wining battles (at least in England), but this is made hard by the total refusal of trans rights activists to engage with the issues at hand often adopting a ‘no debate’ policy perhaps due to knowing their position is founded on sand.
This subreddit is an attempt to create a small space where gender critical voices can engage with those who take the opposite view or who don’t take any particular view. Join us!

2024.05.14 04:51 AutumnFanatic [22/M4F] Illinois/Anywhere/Online - Hi! Nerdy guy who gets zero day to day social interaction looking for a female interested in a genuine intimate connection

Why did the farmer visit the pharmacy? To speak with the farm-assist.
Hi and welcome to my post! Wanted to start off with a funny to me dad joke.
Nice to meet you, I'm Dylan! To put it simple, I am a single 22 year old man who has been pretty lonely in life and lacking in female connection and interaction. And part of what comes with that is the desire to be intimate with a person. I am very mature for my age and will always be respectful of your boundaries and feelings, especially with anything sexual. Lately all I have is myself when it comes to sexual desires, so I would like to have someone to keep company with in that regard too.
I'm just relaxing at work since there's nothing really going on and thinking about going home tonight and burning a woodwick candle. Perfect for when there's a storm outside. I love candles! 🕯️ Sometimes a campfire outside on a fall night or a crackling WoodWick candle is a relaxing constant among our busy and hectic world. It's nice to just disconnect, feel grounded and happy in your own little cozy space. Feeling calm and collected and at peace. Something that fewer people take the time to do these days.
I am seeking a woman around my age or older to build a close connection with that could possibly lead to a relationship and something intimate which includes the possibility of teasing/sharing pics etc. but only when we were comfortable. Figured I would be open in my Intentions as that's the best way to be.
You:
Kind, respectful, and easy going.
Comfortable with the idea of eventually sharing intimate things together.
Willing to eventually move off of Reddit.
Want something genuine and fun!
Are honest in your intentions and a good person to be around!
That's about it, we will get along great I know it.
I've been feeling a little bummed out lately. I always try and stay happy and see the best in things. But.. I've just been so alone. Most of my whole childhood and adult years have been spent feeling lonely. I grew up surrounded by cornfields which was peaceful but also has a lonely aspect to it. My family never really were close and never did anything as a family really. And part of it too is the fact that I never had any neighbors my age to interact with. But aside from that, my adult life has been very lonely. I'm just always by myself. I barely have any meaningful adult relationships or experiences, or even any friends.
I work a 3-11 job in building maintenance at my company world headquarters building which I love, but again it's very lonely. I work the off shift so the building is always empty. I don't get normal social interaction with people my age or a chance to build relationships. I only have 3 older men as co-workers and we are mostly in the basement away from any people on the floors from knowing our existence. I always walk the floors and see office people laughing and chatting with their coworkers and I just don't have that kind of experience. And just.. no one knows I exist really. Everyone probably assumes I have a lot of friends, but I'm struggling inside with being so alone and trying to meet people and get past the "hi how are you?" "I'm good thanks" stage. Most people don't seem to want to talk beyond that. And most women are already in relationships and thus it would seem weird to approach them in an office setting trying to get to know them deeper. But man those "hi how are yous" are the only real interactions I get during my day.. so thus I decided to come here lol. Rant over, sorry! I promise I'm not a downer. 😅
Now for some things about me!
As you can tell, I am very mature for my age and am polite and have good grammar which unfortunately not everyone my age does anymore lol. I am not active at all on social media/internet culture really and don't know much about all the slang the younger people these days use. I feel like I'm 50. 🤣
I am left handed which is pretty cool. I'm not much of a party person or a drinker, I much prefer a quiet night at home and maybe a beer or two on a weekend but that's about it. I am simple and stay out of drama and trouble and don't get much into politics or other things that cause drama with people. I much prefer a relaxing campfire and a night at home and to just let the world keep on turning haha. I consider myself pretty intelligent and mature, especially for my age which is why I'm open to older ladies.
Physically I'm 180 pounds, have brown hair, green eyes, and a typical build. There's a few pictures on my profile.
Some of my hobbies are:
• Photography
I have a Nikon D200 and D5500 that I love to shoot with. I love nature scenes, abstract, black and white/goth kinda photography, sunsets, etc. it's so fun to just let your mind explore. It's not about what camera you have, but those who are behind the camera! I'm gonna try and photograph the northern lights tonight!
• Cooking and baking
I loveeee to cook and bake! I enjoy making various meals but also love to just have a frozen pizza once in awhile or something like that. I recently made homemade chili which turned out great. I love to bake, especially in the fall! I love pies, cakes, pastries, cookies, etc. I restored a vintage KitchenAid mixer that needed tbe gearbox rebuilt. Eventually I would love to practice home canning my own food.
• Music
Oh my gosh, I like so much!! Alternative rock, punk, post punk, electronic, synth pop, psychedelic rock, hard rock, etc. I am very non judgemental and open when it comes to music. My three current favorite bands are Type O Negative, Joy Division, and the Cure.
• Nature walks and camping
I really enjoy camping, making fires, and relaxing by a campfire. I love to take walks outside and just enjoy the beauty and simplicity of nature. It's wonderful, especially in a world so focused on everything digital.
• Repairing things
I'm a maintenance guy and one of my hobbies is electronics repair so I am good with my hands and just all around good at troubleshooting and fixing all sorts of things around the house. Last week I helped my elderly neighbor get his tractor started, it needed a new component in the starting circuit. So I'm pretty handy which... Comes in handy! 😂
• Autumn 🍁
This isn't a hobby per say, but man do I love the fall!!! It's my absolute favorite time of the year. Oh my gosh. The beautiful colors, crisp cool air, misty and foggy days, rain, lack of bugs, being cuddled up with a candle or by the fire drinking a tea, etc. I love it! There's only two seasons for me. Fall, and waiting for fall! Haha.
• Scented Candles and incense
Going along with my love for fall, I absolutely love candles! I have like 30 something lol. 😂 Currently my favorite are WoodWick, which are owned by Yankee candle. They have such a soothing crackle and the scents are great! I also love to burn incense from time to time as well. I have cottagecore hippie vibes.
• Old houses and architecture
I love old houses! Especially 1900s and Victorian era homes. Old homes have so much character to them and are just so beautiful from a time when people took pride in their craft. I strongly dislike the modern cookie cutter cheap construction of homes today. I would love to live in an old home one day. I also love their architecture and uniqueness, as well as architecture of old cathedrals and other buildings.
• Relaxing
Basic I know, but sometimes on the weekend I just love to get cozy in bed and relax and put on a YouTube video or an album! 😊
That's about it for me, I'm a pretty laid back and simple person. My ideal person is someone who is respectful and honest! I am very straightforward and open minded and would hope that you are as well.
If I seem interesting to you at all I would love to hear from you!
Thank you so much for reading.

2024.05.14 02:45 JesseRayPalacios Narcissistic "Mother" lied and prevented me from seeing grandmother on Mothers Day....Oh, and she's stealing from my grandma too.

TLDR: My "mother" is a vile evil woman who has stolen from my grandma and nephew, committed crimes and exploited people, had me working at 15 to support the family while she did nothing, and lied to me so I wouldn't see my grandma on Mother's Day. I have a long post on my full story on another subreddit on my profile if you want more context.
My "mother" is a vile, awful person who has committed heinous and despicable acts. To make an extremely long story short, I grew up in an unstable household. My dad wasn't around and my mom was unwilling to work to support us. I was pawned off to my grandparents who lived with us, and they were more parents to me than my actual parents were. Everything my mom has done has been to fuel her ego, and as with many narcissists, to seek validation to reinforce her nonexistent identity outside external validation. She needs validation constantly on how young and beautiful she looks, how rich and great she is, and how she is an excellent and caring mom. Yet a good mother wouldn't have had me and my siblings and grandparents living in a former drug house infested with millions of roaches, rats, black mold, and on again off again running water and electricity. A good mom also wouldn't have sat around having parties and drinking while I, at 15 years of age and two senior citizens, broke our backs trying to sell and rent party supplies and carrying an 800 lb bounce house to customers that wanted to rent them. I worked at 15 like a Victorian boy instead of going to school trying to make ends meet because my parents wouldn't. My "mother" has done everything evil you can think of, from scamming and stealing from innocent people, catfishing other men (while with my stepdad), pretending to be my sister online for validation and money, forcing my sister to be a model and hook up with much older men for the promise of advancement (she was 17 and these men where in there 30s or older), spies on my widowed sister-in-law, had me living in deplorable conditions and having me eat old food infested with roaches and rat droppings, conducting illegal gambling business and money laundering, kept the fact that (some of) my siblings are adopted from them, baby trapped my stepdad, had little to no concern for my mental health and did not help or try to accommodate my sensory issues (I suspect I may have level 1 autism, mostly with sensory issues) and much, much, much more. I have been going to therapy and am currently doing emdr to undo the damage that my evil "mother" has done. She is a master of manipulation, love bombing, and buying people's love, loyalty, and affection. I, for the second time, have gone no contact with her.
Now that there's some context, my grandmother means everything to me. She lives in a convalescent home and my mom has control over her. I wanted to see her on Mother's Day. My mom asked if I was going to come to lunch. I said we were visiting my wife's mom, then coming to the house later at 5. She said that was not going to work because they were going to eat at 1. I said, OK well, if we can't do the restaurant, then take her to the house, so we can all visit her at 5. She said she couldn't do that, and why couldn't we just go to eat with them and then, IF there's time, we could go to my mother-in-law's house for a little bit. I said no, everything has been arranged already, and as usual you don't inform anyone of plans and expect everyone last second to cancel theirs and do yours. We were going to make my mother-in-law a priority, however, there was time for both. She got mad and said she would not be bringing my grandma to the house and I guess that was it. I said, well, I guess it is. On Mother's Day, I called my grandma, and she was upset and crying, asking why I hadn't seen her, and that she had come to visit the house. My mom took her to the house after lunch and didn't tell me. Neither did any of my other family. She said that she wanted to come back home and didn't want to live at the facility. She is fairly healthy and in reality, doesn't need to be at the facility. After talking to her, I confronted my mom and said that I explicitly told you that I wanted to see Grandma, and you said you were NOT bringing her to the house. You did bring her to the house and intentionally did not tell me. Because I did not bow down and follow your commands like everyone else, you deliberately orchestrated this, so I would not see her in an act of revenge to spite me. There was no reason you couldn't have called or texted and told me you were bringing her, especially after I told you I wanted to see her, even if it was at the last minute. It was an intentional act. She just said you are always talking shit about me. I told her it's not talking shit if it's true. She then hung up. This is what she does. If you don't follow the Führers command, bow at her feet, and tell her how wonderful and gracious she is, she will seek vengeance and do things to spite you, to bring glory for herself.
My grandma told me that my "mom" mistreats her, and is collecting pay from the government pretending to be her caretaker (when in reality my mom does absolutely nothing and has no job whatsoever. She dedicates her life to crime, fraud, and scams. She ran an underground casino with my stepdad and when they got busted my stepdad took the fall) but instead dumped her in a conversant home and does not care for her at all. Besides all that, my grandma also stated that she takes all of her social security money and keeps it. This is not surprising because my nephew, who is technically an orphan, having lost both parents recently, is under the custody of my horrible "mother" and he had some kind of inheritance left for him. When my "mother" discovered this, she swept in and wiped it clean. Her greed is deplorable. Wherever there is money, the Sheriff of Nottingham will do anything to get every last coin wherever she can get it. She even charges people $5 to use the washing machine. The most important thing to my "mother" is herself and her endless black hole of needing to be validated and praised, along with the endless black hole of greed. It is her entire identity. I am so enraged, and I can not let these things happen. When will my "mother" face consequences for her actions? She cannot continue to commit evil acts and not only get away with them but also prosper because of it. One of the worst parts, however, is that everyone, even if they have their problems with her, always goes along with what the dear leader says and continues to enable her by telling her she's a good mom and that they appreciate her. She needs to face consequences for her actions, but I don't know what to do. She can't continue to harm people and get away with it. I need help.

2024.05.14 02:27 AutumnFanatic 22 [M4F] Illinois/Anywhere/Online - Lonely nerdy guy who gets zero social interaction looking for a female interested in forming a genuine intimate connection!

2024.05.13 22:49 Malicious_Madness Sexual Submission In The Fever Dream Of Xenoluminatus

Miss Culuss' daughters, which I am one of them, have been coerced by our mother, Miss Culuss, for years to sell our bodies in sexual servitude in the form of marriage to Mr. Bingas, Mr. Alhazred and Mr. Thossothoth. Trust me, it's been tiring hearing our mother constantly bragging to all the men of the grand hidden Victorian city of Harlotowah, California; that we were simply born to have our buttocks banged and bred at any man's will, desire or pleasure.
Tiring it is, but trust me it gets more exhausting when everyone here is immortal and Spring is eternal here. All residents of Harlotowah stop aging at the physical bodily age of 35 years old. Yet the years are drastically longer. For example, when I was a child, I remained with the aged body of an 11 year old until 3 decades had passed. Then the same process went for when my body reached its adolescent stage and so on and so forth, you get the idea of how this works now.
As for the Victorian era city, well we updated our old architecture with electricity but it is devoid of television, phones, pretty much everything except for electricity used for hygiene. Strange it may seem, but once you realize the nature of who/what created and rules over Harlotowah, it won't come to you as much of a surprise. You see, the ruler has a fetish, an immense fetish for sexual submission. Thus why even the boys here are either feminized (like I was), force fed hormones to transition or remain boys yet must partake of constant sexual initiation until their bodies reach the final aging point of 35.
Obscure sexual rules dominate Harlotowah, they are devoid of normal morality and some of them completely devoid of sanity.
Now, back to myself and my sisters. I, Scarlet, near the bodily age of 32, have been with Mr. Bingas and Mr. Thossothoth, not in marriage but as a sexual partner more so. Mr. Bingas, having the body of a father who's an alcoholic, though he is nice in the streets, he is maniacally rough in the sheets. Each time he's pounded me, it's to an almost primal tribal drum like rhythm, and it's amazing.
However, for Mr. Thossothoth, he has this intelligence with this subtle insidious air to it. It's like whenever we talk or spend time together, or even while he's fucking me, it's like I'm in this strange sinister dream. It feels euphorically ominous, I believe that's the best way to describe being with him as a sexual partner.
For example, while we were out in his spacious lovely garden during noon, in this smooth way, he tore my dress off with ease in fluid precise motions till I was only in my floral black lingerie beneath. He tied my hands together in front of me, tied them to the fence of the balcony we were on with the view of the garden, he stripped down and then began to ravage me. As he pulled my long auburn hair while he ravaged my buttocks, I felt like a synergy of profound sexual pleasure and deep flooding feelings of foreboding combine like two rivals having make-up sex.
For hours he fucked me until even when the sun began to set. I didn't hunger or thirst for good or drink, all I did hunger and thirst for was for his cock to ravage my ass and continue filling it with his seed, which he did. The whole experience, well all of those experiences to be honest since we've done this multiple times, they all felt like I was experiencing an orgasmic overwhelmingly ominous dream of the entirety of eternity itself.
As we had rough ravenous sex in those hours of noon to twilight, I saw the lush green trees sway with the wind back and forth in an almost harmonious rhythm, from serenely swift to terrifyingly slow, back and forth, back and forth. The flowers swirled in eternal circles as they moaned. The grass swayed back and forth as well while the bushes let out unhinged howls. It's as if the entire vast garden was being blown by a great wind from a world of pure delightfully demented symphonies.
I think I've become addicted to being a sexual partner of Mr. Thossothoth. Though I am curious of how Mr. Alhazred is like, I will see later this year. As for now, I shall remain as Mr. Thossothoth's sexual partnepossible bride. The eternal subtly malevolent and euphoric Spring of Harlotowah is close to blooming to its peak. I have a feeling that when it reaches its peak, something immense will happen either with me or with this town. We shall see. As for now, Mr. Thossothoth is outside waiting for me to have a splendid walk with him in his garden again.
And how I long to be at his side as we walk through his garden and the town day and especially at nightfall. The Spring during the night is like an rapturous wet dream and nightmare combined into one new force, new being, new experience. Mr. Thossothoth calls it the Daturain time, where the Datura Goddess' influence and presence is strongest. I believe him and am curious if we can do a sexual ritual to commune with her. Maybe, some night, hopefully soon.

2024.05.13 19:00 NationalAnything1547 Thrifting Your Way to the Perfect Goth Wardrobe - Tips and Tricks for the Frugal Goth Girl

Hello night owls and fashion enthusiasts,
After seeing many inquiries about how to thrift goth girl fashion effectively, I've decided to share some strategies for finding the perfect clothing, accessories, and footwear in second-hand stores and online platforms.
1. Understand the Aesthetic: Before you start your thrifting journey, it's crucial to understand the goth aesthetic. The goth subculture has its roots in the post-punk movement, with music playing a significant role. Goth fashion draws inspiration from punk, glam, and other alternative styles, mixing traditional and borrowed elements. It helps to research different substyles (like Victorian goth, cybergoth, or pastel goth) and decide which resonates with you most.
2. Think Versatile: The key to a successful goth wardrobe isn't buying tons of pieces—it's having versatile items that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits. Look for items like black dresses, trench coats, and staple pieces in different styles. One good find can be a base for many different looks.
3. Don't Ignore Mainstream Stores: When you're thrifting, don't limit yourself to stores that explicitly sell goth or alternative clothing. Often, you can find excellent pieces at mainstream thrift stores, online marketplaces, or even garage sales. It's all about spotting the potential in pieces, such as seeing how a vintage lace dress could work in a goth outfit.
4. DIY Is Your Friend: Part of the goth culture is a DIY ethos. If you find an item that's close but not perfect, think about how you could alter it to fit your aesthetic. This could be as simple as changing buttons, adding patches, or even using dye to darken a garment. With a bit of creativity and a DIY spirit, you can transform seemingly ordinary clothes into goth fashion. Simple customizations can add a personal touch to your outfits. A basic black shirt can be transformed with some fabric paint or patches. A simple skirt can be made edgier with some added lace or chains. And never underestimate the power of safety pins!
5. Patience and Persistence: Thrifting is not always a quick process. It might take multiple trips to find pieces that work for you. But that's part of the fun – the thrill of the hunt and the joy when you finally discover that perfect piece.
6. Try Online Thrifting: Don't forget to check out online platforms like eBay, Poshmark, and Depop. These platforms often have a good variety of goth and alternative fashion items. Use specific keywords for what you're looking for, like "goth", "punk", "alternative", "leather jacket", "lace dress", etc., to narrow down the search results.
7. Check for Quality: Be sure to check the quality of items before buying. Sometimes, clothing at thrift stores can be worn out or have minor damage. It's crucial to ensure the items you buy are in good condition and will last. Invest in good quality staple pieces, like a trench coat or combat boots, which you can use with multiple outfits. Fast fashion might be tempting due to its affordability, but quality items will last you much longer and usually fit and look better.
8. Join the Community: Become part of the online goth community. Subreddits like GothFashion and goth are great places to share, learn, and engage with others about goth fashion.
9. Hit Thrift Stores on Delivery Days
Some thrift stores have specific days or times when they put out new merchandise. If you can figure out these days/times, you increase your chances of scoring the best finds before others get to them. If you're unsure, don't be afraid to ask the staff. They'll often be happy to tell you when new merchandise typically hits the floor.
10. Look Beyond the Women’s Section
This tip applies to anyone, not just girls. Thrift stores aren’t perfectly organized, and it's common to find women’s clothing in the men’s section or vice versa. Also, men's clothing can be a great source of oversized or unique items that you can incorporate into your style.
11. Use Online Platforms
If you can't find what you're looking for in physical stores, don't forget about online thrift stores and platforms like Depop, Poshmark, or eBay. These can be excellent resources for finding goth fashion pieces, though it's important to always check the seller's reputation and the item description for any potential issues.
And lastly, enjoy the process. Thrifting is like a treasure hunt. It's about the thrill of the hunt and the satisfaction of finding something awesome. So, have fun with it!
Happy thrifting, darklings!

The Mad Woman in The Attic: WAOLOM, mad woman, Jane Eyre and the Eras tour WAOLOM visuals
Taylor is now repeatedly drawing us back to lesbian and queer poetry and literature, which consistently has themes of madness, sickness, and suppression. I feel that she is telling us over and over that she is sick from closeting, and she can't take it anymore.
When I saw the WAOLOM visuals for Eras tour, I thought Taylor is meant to be in an attic. I've come across 'The Mad Woman in the Attic' by Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar before, but I have never read it all the way through. I believe Taylor is directly referencing this book, and Jane Eyre, to inform us all that she resonates with this story as a queer woman, and that she is stuck in her own attic - her closeted life - and she wants to burn it all down (with Karma, imho).
The WAOLOM visuals

To me, this house either looks like the Lovers House or her childhood home - or it represents both, amalgamated. The reason I'm drawn to the Lovers House is because of the very obvious triangular imagery as we zoom in, showing her in the attic. She is also using a lot of mirrored images, something that's important when considering The Mad Woman in the Attic. However, it's also possible the Lovers house is drawn from her childhood home, which I have no doubt has been theorised before. Another alternative is through suppressed intergenerational trauma, Taylor is realising themes of her childhood home have been bleeding into her work.
The two houses for reference

The Mad Woman in the Attic
WAOLOM is directly related to mad woman, made very clear during the Eras tour (if it wasn’t already!) by the imagery.
Taylor is in the attic, the mad woman in the attic, which is also the title of a book by Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar analysing Victorian literature through the lense of Jane Eyre (Charlotte Brontë), and it's worth noting Taylor repeatedly makes references to Jane Eyre throughout Folklore and within mad woman. In Jane Eyre, Bertha Mason is locked in an attic by her husband Mr Rochester, and in the mad woman in the attic, Gilbert and Gubar use this as a frame of analysis to explore madness and angelicness in the works of Victorian women authors from a feminist perspective. The book examines work from Charlotte and Emily Brontë, Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Mary Shelley, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Christina Rossetti. What do all of these women have in common, beyond being literary authors? They’re all rumoured, or essentially confirmed (in the case of Christina Rossetti and Emily Dickinson) of being queer, particularly lesbian. It is a very key and formative piece of feminist literature.
The premise of the book is the authors explore how women writers were forced to make the women in their books one of two things: angel, or monster. They argue this is imposed by a “reductionist, patriachal view of women’s roles”; they have, from what I understand, received some critisism for not saying the quiet part out loud here: under cisheteronormative patriachy, women are defined in relation to, by and for men – - and so lesbians and lesbian identity is alienated, hidden, erased. The book does not make the obvious connection here - these writers were forced to closet themselves for their own protection in Victorian society. Gilbert and Gubar draw on what Virginia Woolf said for their argument: “[women writers] must "kill the aesthetic ideal through which they themselves have been 'killed' into art". Let’s not forget here, the connections between WAOLOM and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, posts on this sub with this theory here from u/throw_ra878, here from u/slejeunesse and here from u/AliceStanleyJr. Gilbert and Gubar do argue that men originally set up the dichotomy of female characters as either pure, virginal, angelic or rebelillious, mad, ‘hysterical’. A direct quote that jumped out from me from the Preface is “for just as women have been repeatedly defined by male authors, they seem in reaction to have found it necessary to act out male metaphors in their own texts, as if trying to understand their impliciations.” Indeed.
Crucially, the book describes “a female schizophrenia of authorship” or a “split”: as a representation of themselves, authors would write, process and act out their own suppressed nature and emotions through the process of ‘employed mirrors’; and thus create the image of the mad woman. A direct quote: "these madwomen emerge "over and over again from the mirrors women writers hold up both to their own natures and to their own visions of nature,"..."they appear from a silence in which neither [they] nor [their] author[s] can continue to acquiesce"". The book fails to really dig into this silence: the silence, and the common nature, is that of holding a queer or lesbian identity, and all of these women were forced to suppress it. This draws me to the lesbian memoir from Glennon Doyle, Untamed, in which she talks of how suppressing your true, queer self leads to sickness and ill-health, including mental health issues, and Taylor has links to this book too - she has credited it as being a "huge help" during 2020.
I will say, it is hard to miss what Gilbert and Gubar are getting at, especially is queer, or even only familiar with just two or three of these authors work (which we know Taylor is); it's natural to ascertain that what these women were hiding was their queerness, and this is specifically a consequence of cisheteronormative society. It is also a widely discussed critisism.
I can’t think why Taylor could be drawing from a text like this…
mad woman and Jane Eyre
A lot of Folklore is littered with references to Jane Eyre, that lots of people have noticed. A really good summary of all the references in Folklore can be found here from @/Karisma Takhar on medium. Here is what they wrote about man woman and references to Jane Eyre
"The Jaye Eyre references continue in ‘mad woman’, the track title a reference to who the literary world now refers to as the ‘Madwoman in the Attic’ thanks to Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar. On Jane and Mr Rochester’s wedding day, it is revealed the latter is married to Bertha Mason, whose mental health deteriorated rapidly after the wedding. Mr Rochester decides to lock his wife away in the attic of their home, leaving Grace Poole to care for her, though Grace’s drinking occasionally leads Bertha to escape and roam the hallways. She rips Jane’s wedding veil in half the night before the wedding, an incident Mr Rochester blames on one of maids. When Mr Rochester formally introduces his wife to Jane, she ‘scratched and growled like some strange animal’; Taylor makes similar statements in the song, likening the ‘mad woman’ to both a scorpian and a bear in its defence."
I think this makes it incredibly likely Taylor is not just drawing from Jane Eyre but she is aware of how her sub-conscious suppressed is spilling out into her work, and she is choosing to deliberately make this bigger and louder.
I think the strongest links to this theory are 1989 onwards, which I believe is partly linked to Karma the lost album, the album I do believe is going to 'burn it all down' in order for Taylor to rebuild as an artist who is out and proudly queer.
Here are some lyrics which link to this theme of the 'mad woman, with themes of madness, craziness, rebellion and hysteria - and a process of ‘splitting’ in Taylor’s work, where her suppressed desires come through in her lyrics, leading to consistent themes of madness:
· Treachourous (Red): "This slope is treacherous, this path is reckless, this slope is treacherous, and I, I, I like it"
· Say Don’t Go (1989): “the waiting is a sadness, fading into madness, oh no, oh no, it won't stop, i'm standin' on a tightrope alone, I hold my breath a little bit longer, halfway out the door, but it won't close
· I Did Something Bad (Reputation): "I never trust a narcissist, but they love me, so I play 'em like a violin, and I make it look oh so easy, 'Cause for every lie I tell them, they tell me three, this is how the world works" / "I can feel the flames on my skin, crimson red paint on my lips, if a man talks shit, then I owe him nothing, I don't regret it one bit, 'cause he had it comingThey say I did something bad, then why's it feel so good?" / "And I let them think they saved me" / "You gotta leave before you get left" / "They're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one, they got their pitchforks and proof, their receipts and reasons, they're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one, so light me up (light me up), light me up (light me up), light me up, go ahead and light me up (light me up)"
· Look What You Made Me Do (Reputation): "But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time, honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time, I got a list of names, and yours is in red, underlined, I check it once, then I check it twice" / "I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me, I'll be the actress starring in your bad dreams"
· End Game (Reputation): "“I hit you like, "Bang", we tried to forget it, but we just couldn't, and I bury hatchets but I keep maps of where I put 'em, reputation precedes me, they told you I'm crazy
· Getaway Car (Reputation): "It was the best of times, the worst of crimes, I struck a match and blew your mind, but I didn't mean it, and you didn't see it, The ties were black, the lies were white, In shades of gray in candlelight, I wanted to leave him, I needed a reason, "X" marks the spot where we fell apart, he poisoned the well, I was lyin' to myself, I knew it from the first Old Fashioned, we were cursed, we never had a shotgun shot in the dark" / "There were sirens in the beat of your heart, should've known I'd be the first to leave, think about the place where you first met me, in a getaway car, no, they never get far, no, nothin' good starts in a getaway car, It was the great escape, the prison break, the light of freedom on my face, but you weren't thinkin' and I was just drinkin', while he was runnin' after us, I was screamin', "Go, go, go!", but with three of us, honey, it's a sideshow, and a circus ain't a love story, and now we're both sorry", "We were jet-set, Bonnie and Clyde, until I switched to the other side, to the other side, it's no surprise I turned you in, 'Cause us traitors never win"
· The Man (Lover): “they paint me out to be bad, so it's okay that I'm mad, I'm so sick of running as fast as I can, wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man (you know that), and I'm so sick of them coming at me again (coming at me again)” “I’m so sick” is repeated 8 times, which just so happens to be the number representing infinity.
· The Archer (Lover): "Combat, I'm ready for combat, I say I don't want that, but what if I do? 'Cause cruelty wins in the movies" / "I've been the archer, I've been the prey, who could ever leave me, darling? But who could stay?" / "And I cut off my nose just to spite my face, then I hate my reflection for years and yearsI wake in the night, I pace like a ghost, the room is on fire, invisible smoke, and all of my heroes die all alone"
· The Last American Dynasty (Folklore): “Holiday House sat quietly on that beach, free of women with madness, their men and bad habits, and then it was bought by me, who knows, if I never showed up, what could've been, there goes the loudest woman this town has ever seen, I had a marvelous time ruinin' everything
· Seven (Folklore): “I think your house is haunted, your dad is always mad and that must be why, and I think you should come live with, me and we can be pirates, then you won't have to cry, or hide in the closet, and just like a folk song, our love will be passed on, please picture me, in the weeds, before I learned civility, I used to scream ferociously, any time I wanted
· mad woman obviously, just the whole thing!
· Champagne Problems (Evermore): ““This dorm was once a madhouse”, I made a joke, "Well, it's made for me"” // “"She would've made such a lovely bride, what a shame she's fucked in the head, " they said, but you'll find the real thing instead, she'll patch up your tapestry that I shred”
· Anti-Hero (Midnights): “Midnights become my afternoons, when my depression works the graveyard shift, all of the people I've ghosted stand there in the room” / “I should not be left to my own devices, they come with prices and vices, I end up in crisis (tale as old as time)” / Did you hear my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism, like some kind of congressman? (Tale as old as time), I wake up screaming from dreaming, one day I'll watch as you're leaving”
· WAOLOM ofcourse, just the whole thing.
Interestingly, Taylor's references to virtue, or themes of angelic, virginity, are pre-1989.
· Hey Stephen (Fearless): "'Cause I can't help it if you look like an angel, can't help it if I wanna kiss you in the rain, so come feel this magic I've been feeling since I met you, can't help it if there's no one else, mmm, I can't help myself"
· White Horse (Fearless): "Say you're sorry, that face of an angel, comes out just when you need it to, as I paced back and forth all this time, 'Cause I honestly believed in you, holdin' on, the days drag on, stupid girl, I should've known, I should've known, that I'm not a princess, this ain't a fairy tale, I'm not the one you'll sweep off her feet, lead her up the stairwell, this ain't Hollywood, this is a small town, I was a dreamer before you went and let me down, now it's too late for you and your white horse, to come around"
· The Lucky One (Red): "New to town with a made-up name, in the angel's city, chasing fortune and fame, and the camera flashes make it look like a dream" I think this whole song is really interesting to read when considering this idea of beasts versus angels, madness versus virtue, and the idea of her having been sold a lie.
In Summary
Taylor is using imagery of herself in an attic to imply she is aware her true self, her closeted and suppressed self, is coming through in her music, and she is saying she directly relates to Jane Eyre - she feels trapped by her closeted life, by the "1950s shit they want from me", she wants to be free, healthy, out. She is telling us all that these themes of madness are a direct result of all she is suppressing, a direct result of living in a cisheteronormative patriachy, and it is stifling her, ruining her life.
Taylor has got to a stage where she is now deliberately referencing queer media, authors and literature, knowing full well it will be looked into. These consistent themes are not accidental; she is saying through her art and her music that she is queer and she doesn't want to hide it anymore. I partially think a lot of the themes of death are about how she doesn't want to die in the closet and her work be analysed years later, to them be summarised as possibly gay later on. She wants to be known, now, as queer, as her true self, to cure her sickness of suppression.
She is also implying she is an unreliable narrator and there are certain parts of her music you can't trust at face value; that she is suppressing a huge part of herself and it is presenting in her lyrics, it is filled with queer closeted trauma and comphet as a manifestation of the suppression of her true identity, and she needs people to know.
I truly think she is ready to burn it all down, with Karma. In the words of Taylor, "all I think about is Karma".

2024.05.13 04:39 StarLotus7 I made a Pinterest board for every decade, from the 1890s to the 2020s!

Over the course of these last few months, I created a Pinterest board for every decade! I did all of that to visualize better each decade, organizing and laying down their visuals, aesthetics, themes, vibes, moods, and cultural characteristics, summarizing an entire decade in a set of images. So without more stalling, here's every Pinterest board that I made for every decade:

Also known as "The Gay Nineties" ("gay" meaning happy or joyous at the time), it was a part of the "Belle Époque" (1871-1914), the Gilded Age (circa 1870-1900), and the last decade of the Victorian Era (1837-1901) and the 19th Century. It's the first decade in history to have an identity compared to previous times, one of rapid technological advancement, such as the invention of film and cars. Queen Victoria died in 1901, ushering the Edwardian Era (1901-1910). Puffy sleeves fell out of style, but the Gibson Girl look persists. Ladies hats got bigger and the S-bend corset got popular. Cars, also known at the time as "horseless carriages", were slowly seeping in with the upper classes. Other than that, the 1900s were basically a continuation of the 1890s, with similar aesthetics, music, and styles.

1910s

For the time, it was a decade of massive transformations. During the later half, "the Great War" came around, as well as the Spanish Flu. A large number of men went to the battlefields and trenches, women needed to occupy male jobs, new war tech was developing, and propaganda became repent. Throughout the 1910s, cars became more widespread, the airplane was invented, the Radio was slowly rising, and fashion became less uptight and more relaxed compared to the past.

1920s

As the Great War and Spanish Flu Pandemic comes to a close, the 1920s begin, finally completely distancing society from the 19th Century. Ah, the famous Roaring Twenties... The Jazz Age, flappers, Art Deco, and the booming of Radio! A rather glamorous and fancy time of clubs and bars. In the United States, it also coincided with the Alcohol Prohibition, which contributed to the rise of this particular zeitgeist in the first place.

1930s

Also known as the "Dirty 30s", it was a very awkward and difficult time following the Wall Street Crash of 1929. The Great Depression, the Dust Bowl in the US, the rise of fascism... We also saw the rise of Talkies (movies with sound), color in film, and the Golden Age of Radio. Aesthetically, it was as if people were stuck between the 1920s and 40s, very transitional per se.

1940s

The Second World War began and it's even worse than the previous one. Manipulative propaganda was rampant and tens of millions of people died during this time, including civilians. The fashion might look fabulous, but the times were anything but that.

Entering a Post-War world and the beginning of the Cold War (1947-1991). It was an age of atomic optimism, reflected in the design of cars, architecture, furniture, and interiors. Televisions became widespread to the masses, although they were still black and white. Rock and Roll, fancy diners, Grease, suburbia and the American Dream also defined the look and vibe of the 50s.

The 60s, a decade of counterculture! Hippies, Woodstock 1969, The Beatles, miniskirts, gogo boots, and psychedelic aesthetics! It was the decade where the youth wanted to voice their beliefs and backlash against traditional institutions and values. It was also that time where TV was getting their colors!

The decade of Disco, bell bottoms, long hair, Earth Tones, and wooden furniture! Very funky I gotta say... Although the politics and economics of the time were less than stellar. We also saw the birth of Video Games and Physical Media, with the VHS vs. Betamax Format War occurring at the time.

Ahh, the 80s... The neon aesthetics, MTV, Synthpop music, cassette tapes, and crazy hairstyles! Real life in the 80s didn't really reflect this maximalist paradise as some people might think, but it did reflect in the visuals of music videos, tech design, advertisement, and media of the time.

An exciting time for technology, with the rise of CGI animation, 3D gaming, computers, mobile phones, and CDs! Baggy clothes, Grunge, alternative aesthetics, Windows 95, boy bands, and millennium futurism also defined the decade. An amalgamation of multiple vibes and aesthetics, representing the times.

The current decade, as of the writing of this description. We are still living it, so things might change down the line, but so far, I can identify some of the vibes, fashion, and aesthetics of the 2020s. Artificial Intelligence, Baggy Y2K revival, foldable phones, RGB lights, and the slow return of maximalism are the characteristics that I identified so far. Not to mention the COVID-19 Pandemic, which completely shifted the mood for possibly the entire decade. But we will see...

2024.05.12 22:42 pucklepac English Paper 1 Lit - what level would you consider this unfinished answer at? English mark scheme is confusing to me and exam is tomorrow.

Starting with this conversation, explain how far you think Shakespeare presents Lord Capulet as a good father. (30 marks + 4 SPaG)
In Romeo and Juliet, I believe that initially and in this extract, Shakespeare presents Lord Capulet as a good father. However, later on in the play, Capulet is presented as a bad father. Finally, at the end of the play, Capulet is presented as more of a good father than in the middle of the play.
Early in the play, Shakespeare presents Capulet as a good father. In Act 1 Scene 2, Paris is asking to marry Juliet. Capulet advises him to be kind, he says "woo her, gentle Paris." The verb "woo" suggests that Capulet wants Paris to try to gain her love. "Woo" could also imply that Juliet has the choice of whether to marry him or not, as is further proven by his following statement - "My will to her consent is but a part". This significantly subverts the expectations of Shakespeares Victorian audience ; in the Victorian era, men had more power in the patriarchal society and for a woman to be married, her father would have arranged the marriage and have picked a husband for her. However, in this scene, Shakespeare goes against this tradition, as Juliet is presented as having the choice of marriage. Shakespeare has intentionally done this to emphasize Capulet as a good father, as his care for his daughters consent is meaningful to him.
How could I improve this? Cheers

2024.05.11 10:01 flabberstalk33 Fourth arrest in historic murder investigation

Today, Victorian Homicide detectives arrested a fourth man wanted in connection with a historic murder investigation which occurred at Parafield Gardens in 2007.
On 1 December 2007, Thea Kheav was murdered at an 18th birthday party at Parafield Gardens. During the party, Mr Kheav’s brother became involved in a small altercation with another group at the party. The group briefly left but then returned and fatally stabbed Thea Keav.
The murder was declared a Major Crime and investigated by the Major Crime Investigation Branch.
Detectives arrested and charged three men with murder, and they were subsequently convicted in 2011 and sentenced to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 20 years.
About six months after the death, a fourth suspect was identified however investigators found that he had fled Australia four weeks after the murder.
In 2008, detectives obtained a warrant of apprehension for the fourth offender who was found in Cambodia and arrested by Cambodian Police.
Three months later, the Cambodian Supreme Court rejected the extradition application for the man, and he was subsequently released.
About 7.30am today (Saturday 11 May), the 36-year-old man formerly of Salisbury North, was arrested after he returned to Melbourne on a flight from Bangkok.
The man has been remanded in custody at the City Watch House and is expected to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday when SA Major Crime Detectives will seek his extradition back to South Australia.

Everyone Can Like Christmas A Lot

In the heart of Whoville, Christmas is a tapestry woven with whimsy and tradition, blending the fantastical with the time-honored. Streets adorned with Victorian-inspired decor, where garlands of holly and ivy intertwine with handmade paper ornaments, create a scene straight out of a cherished storybook. The air is filled with the aroma of roasted goose and plum pudding, evoking memories of old-fashioned feasts shared by generations past. Gathered around crackling fires and pianos, Whos sing carols that echo through the cobblestone lanes, their voices carrying the timeless melodies of "Silent Night" and "The First Noel." Handcrafted gifts, lovingly made and exchanged, embody the spirit of giving and gratitude. And amidst the laughter and joy, the true magic of Who Christmas shines brightest—a celebration of community, compassion, and the enduring warmth of cherished traditions.
A delightful concept inspired by the whimsical world of Whoville from Dr. Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" In Whoville, Christmas is celebrated with unique traditions and customs that embody the true spirit of the holiday. Here's a glimpse into a "Who Christmas" in traditional Whoville style:
  1. Decorations:
    • Whimsical, colorful decorations adorn every corner of Whoville, from intricate paper snowflakes to twinkling lights shaped like candy canes and Whos.
    • Whoville trees are quirky and crooked, decorated with bright baubles, ribbons, and tinsel that defy gravity.
    • Every house is a masterpiece of creative decor, with roofs adorned with wreaths made of candy, popcorn strands, and gingerbread men.
  2. Feast:
    • The Whos gather for a festive feast featuring roast beast (a Who delicacy), Whobilation pudding, and mountains of colorful sweets like Who-hash and Who-pudding.
    • The feast is a time for sharing stories, laughter, and gratitude, with each Who bringing a special dish to contribute to the communal table.
  3. Gift-Giving:
    • Instead of extravagant gifts, the Whos exchange thoughtful presents that reflect their appreciation for one another.
    • Homemade gifts, like knitted scarves, painted rocks, and handcrafted ornaments, are cherished as tokens of love and friendship.
  4. Singing and Merriment:
    • Caroling is a cherished tradition in Whoville, with the Whos singing joyful tunes like "Welcome Christmas" and "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" with boundless enthusiasm.
    • Musical instruments made from household items, such as jingle bells fashioned from spoons and drums made from pots and pans, add to the festive cacophony.
  5. Community Spirit:
    • The true essence of Who Christmas lies in the spirit of togetherness and generosity. Whos come together to help those in need, spreading kindness and goodwill throughout Whoville.
    • The Grinch's heartwarming transformation from a holiday cynic to a celebrant of Christmas embodies the message of forgiveness, love, and redemption.
  6. Whoville Traditions:
    • The lighting of the giant Who Christmas tree in the town square is a grand event, accompanied by a spectacle of fireworks and joyous cheers from Whos of all ages.
    • The Mayor of Whoville leads the Whobilation ceremony, where the Whos join hands and sing their hearts out, embracing the joy of the season.
In Whoville, Christmas is not just about presents and decorations; it's a time to celebrate the bonds of family and community, the magic of kindness, and the joy of being together. Who Christmas captures the essence of the holiday in a uniquely whimsical and heartwarming way.

Old Traditional Styles Too

Adding an old traditional Christmas vibe to the "Who Christmas" celebration in Whoville can create a charming blend of nostalgic customs and whimsical festivities. Here's how you might incorporate elements of an old-fashioned Christmas into the vibrant world of Whoville:
  1. Victorian-Inspired Decor:
    • Whoville homes are adorned with classic Victorian decorations like garlands of holly and ivy, handmade paper ornaments, and flickering candles in brass holders.
    • Instead of bright colors, the decor features rich reds, greens, golds, and deep blues, evoking a sense of warmth and nostalgia.
  2. Festive Feast with a Vintage Twist:
    • The Whos enjoy a feast reminiscent of a Victorian Christmas dinner, featuring roasted goose, plum pudding with brandy sauce, mince pies, and mulled wine.
    • Tables are set with heirloom china, silverware, and linen napkins embroidered with festive motifs.
  3. Traditional Carol Singing:
    • Whos gather around the piano or a crackling fireplace to sing timeless Christmas carols such as "Silent Night," "O Holy Night," and "The First Noel."
    • Handheld instruments like wooden flutes, tambourines, and harmonicas add a rustic charm to the musical performances.
  4. Homemade Gifts and Crafts:
    • In keeping with old traditions, Whos exchange handcrafted gifts such as knitted scarves, embroidered handkerchiefs, wooden toys, and homemade jams and preserves.
    • Children delight in making paper snowflakes, gingerbread houses, and cornhusk dolls as thoughtful gifts for family and friends.
  5. Charitable Giving and Community Support:
    • Whoville's generosity shines during the holiday season as Whos participate in charitable acts such as donating food and gifts to those in need, volunteering at shelters, and organizing charity events.
    • The spirit of giving and compassion is woven into the fabric of Who Christmas, reflecting the values of kindness and goodwill.
  6. Time-Honored Traditions:
    • The lighting of the town's Christmas tree is a cherished tradition, where Whos gather to sing carols, share stories, and enjoy roasted chestnuts and hot cider.
    • Festive parades featuring homemade floats, carolers, and dancers add to the old-world charm of the holiday celebrations in Whoville.
By blending the whimsy of Whoville with the timeless traditions of an old-fashioned Christmas, the Who Christmas celebration becomes a magical journey through the past, celebrating the beauty of heritage, community, and the spirit of the season.

2024.05.09 09:31 imgaytrash Some thoughts about our local horny nun:

please be generous with her. pretty please. just give her a crumb of substance sometimes
I love “vestal is horny” jokes. I can take a joke i promise. It’s like every other meme about Occultist hitting the crit 0 bleed and Dismas shooting children on the spot or Reynauld committing mass larceny or whatever— it’s funny to flanderize people! I get it, I like it, and laugh at it. I’m just so tired of people dragging the “nymphomania” stuff into serious discussions about lore :/ so here’s my rant about it. (warning for incoming preachiness!)
Vestal is a very normal (allosexual) woman with a normal sex drive. There is NO indication that it’s an addiction or anything to be ashamed of.
I’ve seen people blame her for getting distracted from tending the Flame and using this to show how she has “no control over herself” and that her sex drive is consuming her. I hate this take because it’s exactly the mindset the Church would have imposed on her to make her feel ashamed about her natural impulses. She’s literally spent her life since childhood suffering through enforced chastity, knowing she would never be allowed to find love or even have a brief experience outside the convent walls. Hell, she’s not allowed to even see intimacy. That’s a terrible life to live, and when I’m not joking about it I definitely find it a tragedy. Seriously, imagine it yourself: you’re not allowed to see anyone in any kind of attractive light. Everybody dresses like-- well, like it's a convent. You’re forced to wear a chastity belt because you don’t own that part of your body any longer, the Church does, and the only bare skin you've ever seen is your own. If you’re caught touching yourself you’ll be tortured to death and all your friends will be dragged down alongside you.
In her backstory Vestal looked out of a window briefly and saw two people sharing something she would never be able to have. It’s not even guaranteed that it was sex— the way she touches her mouth implies the kissing is the part she longs for most. To her that scene of passion in the garden was a fleeting moment, a precious image, a memory that she would have held onto for the rest of her life to make the unbearable ache in her heart more bearable.
I mentioned this metaphor somewhere else: blaming Vestal for her actions here is like calling a man in a desert who drops everything for a drop of water an “addict”. The Church has guilted her into feeling crippling shame over her human impulses. When the Flame went out for just a second, she was tortured and her sisters were all starved to death, which is fucking insane and in NO WAY her fault. The Flame was definitely not as vital as the church made it out to be— the Light saved Junia’s life, and it continues to empower her even though she’s probably getting a lot more action now (hopefully!).
Sorry I’m so heated about this :( The themes of her story just hit very close to home for me. These old-fashioned, fantasy-Victorian ideas live on in the very real standards of purity that women are held to-- as if the urge for sex and the paralyzing power of beauty is not equally as powerful to women as to men. And I still see people genuinely defend the shame she feels and call her story "not traumatic", so I wanted to talk about why I feel that’s unfair. The jokes are hilarious but I don’t want to lose the underlying spirit of Junia’s character. People are pretty well able to define the difference between “haha reynauld steals things and doesn’t pay alimony” and “the crusader is a man deeply scarred by war to the point where he has abandoned the things that meant the most to him”, so i just hope people can see both valuable sides to Junia as well!!
Go back to making horny nun jokes now :3 Sorry if I made things too serious!

2024.05.09 08:33 Medium_Leg_1042 Can someone check out my written responses for AP Euro? Just curious to see how well I did

For what it's worth I got 44/55 on the MCQ on the same practice test, or 80% Original is here https://secure-media.collegeboard.org/digitalServices/pdf/ap/ap-european-history-ced-practice-exam.pdf
You can also just do some or skim them if you don't have the time, which is understandable, 100% fine by me. Just be honest, that's all
FIRST SAQ
a. Napoleon's imposition of republican systems on various puppet states. During his wars of conquest, Napoleon would occupy various territories, and set up republics in them, for instance, the Batavian Republic. These were nepotistic in many ways, yet even so, they still partially preserved many of the ideals held by the Jacobins and other related parties. This ultimately shows a specific conflict: that of contemporary republicanism vs. traditional monarchism, which would go on to be a defining ideological issue later on in the century.
b. Napoleon's authoritarian policies. Consolidating his territories, he would institute various laws, such as the Napoleonic Code, building an efficient bureaucracy to maintain them. However, these laws not only reflected traditional treatment of groups such as women, but also were backed up by actions such as the repression of the press, and Napoleon's later coronation as emperor. These actions reeked of tradition, calling back to the older monarchies of Europe, rather than the modern parliamentary states.
c. The Nazi occupation of large portions of Europe. In 1939, having previously annexed Czechoslovakia and Austria, Germany would declare war on Poland, thus setting World War II into motion. They occupied large swathes of territory, and would force their own ideological ideals of national and racial superiority onto others. They attempted to create a new Europe, essentially, dominated by "superior" peoples, but they found great resistance from the masses, who resented these policies, wanting to maintain their old conceptions of nationality. This shows how the struggle between the Nazis and other groups was focused on imposing something new on others who had preferred traditional methods, similar to how Napoleon's newer ideas were not well received by some of the territories he conquered, who preferred older ways.
SECOND SAQ
a. The increase in population brought about by the Industrial Revolution. The discovery of new technology such as the steam engine and of agricultural implements such as the seed drill (from the Agricultural Revolution, closely linked to the Industrial Revolution) allowed for more food, which naturally meant more people could fed, which led to a higher populaton. Cities like Vienna would want to accomodate the growing masses of people who were to live in their realms, and would act accordingly, embarking on infrastructural projects such as the one shown in the map to do so.
b. An attempt to encourage centralization. Austria at this time was composed of many different ethnic groups, including but not limited to Germans, Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians, Ukrainians, Croats, and others. They had little in common, and this caused issues, especially in Bohemia and Hungary. To help combat this, Austria may have wanted to make their capital seem grander and more luxurious in a way, which would encourage nationalism (a rising trend around this time) and to hopefully keep the country together. This shows a trend in which countries would increasingly focus on centralization, as seen even in areas such as Germany, which would later unite in 1871.
c. The de-emphasis of luxury in narrow areas, as opposed to "specialized" areas instead. Vienna, like many other cities in Europe is very old, and most of the streets are narrow and organically made. People seemed to have been comfortable with this previously, yet as the 19th century developed, new ideas on architecture began to grow in popularity, as people advocated for the creation of areas specifically designed for leisure and similar purposes. This is indicative of the fact that people saw cities less as natural phenomenons, but more like artificial constructs which could be efficiently managed and built, similar to, say, Hausmann's architectural rennovations in Paris.
THIRD SAQ
a. Parliament went from supporting intersections between church and state to outright despising it. Around 1517, when Martin Lutther released his Ninety-Five Theses, England was still Catholic, and Henry VIII even published a pamphlet defending the Catholic faith. However, around 1533, when the Church refused to annull his marriage, he established the Anglican Church, becoming Protestant and breaking from Catholicism. However, the English government still had a close relationship with the church. This would change with the rise of movements such as Puritanism, a vaguely Calvinist movement. The Puritans believed the Anglican Church was corrupt in many ways, and some, namely the Pilgrims, even advocated total separation. Puritans were well represented in Parliament, which allowed them to attack the church from the state, which ultimately culminated in the English Civil War, and the beheading of Charles I. This demonstrates that overtime, Parliament (the state) turned against Anglicanism (the church), showing a marked separation of church and state.
b. The English Civil War did not really end religious laws in the country. As was typical of every country at the time, 16th century England possessed numerous religious laws, including some based around heresy. This did not change with the rise of the Puritans, who established strict religious laws of their own, for example, restricting the rights of Roman Catholics. The continuity here is that religious ideas still held massive sway when it came to English law.
c. A disillusionment with religious rule. Both the Reformation and the English Civil War had religious undercurrents, with the Reformation promising a return to a purer form of Christianity, and the English Civil War partially centered around the idea that the king was leading a "popish" (pro-Catholic) plot to restore the religion in the country. Later philosophers including Thomas Hobbes and John Locke would have seen these conflicts, with the hindsight to judge them, and would begin proposing newer ideas of governing which were not based on religion. This shows that the damage caused by tension between these two groups came to such a severe extent that some began seeing secularism as a possible solution, which would be adopted later on in England.
DBQ
Even though old attitudes towards women continued to persist, overall, World War I greatly changed the lives of European women, as shown by the increased involvement of women in manufacturing, and their heightened participation in conflict.
Traditionally, women in Europe had restricted rights. They could neither properly represent themselves legally, nor vote. Wives were thought to be subservient to their husbands, and only suitable for domestic duties. The Victorian ideal of a perfect wife was one who would constantly occupy herself with housework and maintaining order in the family. Women who tried other roles were considered rough, tomboyish, or rustic, which were all seen as negative qualities. In a nutshell, they were second class citizens. Some, especially wealthier women, would gain respect as cultured authors, examples include Jane Austen and George Sand (who had to use a male pseudonym). However, overall, women were simply seen as inferior to men, who controlled the bureaucratic structures of Europe. Yet, less than a decade after WWI, many European countries granted women the right to vote.
The magazine Votes for Women published an article on November 26, 1915, which shows a woman personifying the concept of chivalry presenting the idea of women's equality to a man, who is advocating for more political representation for soldiers (Document 1). Now this is a political cartoon in a newspaper, and so it was meant to reach a broader audience of politically informed citizens. It is worth pointing out that this was published shortly after the sinking of the Anglia, in which female nurses died prioritizing wounded servicemen. The idea was that women were simply dignified enough to obtain legal equality, and that changes in legislation were overdue because of this, an idea the newspaper would've been effective enough at promoting. In addition, a memoir written by Maria Botchkareva in 1919 explains her life as a peasant and an officer (Document 6). This is as close to a direct perspective as you can get, it quite literally comes from a woman who experienced the war first-hand. Botchkareva explains that although man of the men in her unit were hesitant to advance, the women were brave enough to do so, showing that women were just as capable in military matters as men were, thus providing a justification for women to vote. Seeing as all the men had left for war, women had taken up manufacturing roles, being 40.4% of the industrial workforce in France in 1917 (Document 7). This reflects the increased involvement of women in manufacturing jobs. Countess de Courson's book The French Woman during the War, published in 1916, shows how difficult maintaining the war effort was for many peasant women, and their resolve to continue to do so anyways (Document 3). Again, this is evidence of the fact that women were seen as capable contributors to their homelands, another justification for giving them the right to vote. Madeline Ida Bedford wrote a poem in 1917 showing the upwards economic mobility of women during the war (Document 4). This helps support the idea that women had a greater and more significant role in economic affairs, related to manufacturing. Finally, it is worth pointing out that the war left many wives alone from their husbands. This undoubtedly gave them a large amount of time to reflect over societal conditions, and aided the rise of the suffragette movement as they had more time to think independently.
The counter-argument to be held, supported by two pieces of evidence, argues that the war was ultimately insignificant in transforming the role of women. The first comes from Paul von Hindenburg's letter to German Chancellor Bethmann Hollweg in 1916, arguing that women shouldn't be encouraged to pursue various occupations, and that they were only really suited for specific ones (Document 2). However, Hindenburg, though an important general, was extremely conservative (and old). Therefore, his views are not sufficiently representative of contemporary European trends. As a matter of fact, by arguing against the trend of women's involvement in manufacturing and war, he implicitly confirms his existence, only further advancing the pro-change argument. There is also a letter from G. F. Wilby to his fiancée Ethel Baxter in 1918, arguing that she should continue with her feminine occupations, and not meddle in what he considered masculine affairs (Document 5). Wilby, however, was just a private, and although any source of historical information can be valuable, again, one private is not totally representative of the ideas of the general population. Even then, in the same manner as Hindenburg, Wilby supports the idea that the condition of women changed significantly during the war, as by arguing against it, again, he implicitly supports it.
LEQ
The Italian Renaissance focused on human beings as ends to themselves, whereas the Northern Renaissance focused more on people's connection to God and religion, as seen by the advocacy of thinkers such as Petrarch of a better understanding of the human condition, and the advocacy of thinkers like Erasmus of "purification" and a closer connection to God.
Italy before the Renaissance was dominated by city states which had grown into greater powers. Examples include Florence, Venice, Genoa, Milan, Bologna, and others. These states were representative republics (although sometimes despotates) in theory, but oligarchies in practice. Furthermore, even if it hadn't existed in almost a millennium, the shadow of the Roman Empire lurked on the states and their culture. This emphasized both indivdualism and an obsession with classical Rome/Greece. Meanwhile, northern Europe was largely composed of monarchies with close ties to the Catholic Church. Controversies over issues such as indulgences and tithes may well have resulted in increased religious dialogue, various criticisms, and the exploration of newer paths in regards to Christianity.
When Petrarch discovered Cicero's letters to Athens, it helped spark a revolution in Italian thought. People began to abandon the old scholastic trifecta of law, medicine, and theology, for example, but instead adopted the study logic, rhetoric, and grammar. This, combined with the neo-Platonist idea that various concepts such as beauty transcended life, and that humans could understand these concepts, gave birth to humanism, which in turn sparked the Italian Renaissance. This put special emphasis on human beings, who were now seen as special and worthy of study. This is in contrast to the Northern Renaissance. As the power of the Italian city states began to decline in the late 15th century, many of the ideas spread beyond the Alps to areas such as the Holy Roman Empire, which helped create the Northern Renaissance. However, unlike the Italian Renaissance, the Northern Renaissance focused more on religious subjects. Erasmus, a Catholic nonetheless, frequently criticized the actions of the pope, and wrote In Praise of Folly as a criticism of Christianity in his era.
Now although religion was an element of the Italian Renaissance, as the peninsula remained devoutly Catholic and ancient works were even interpreted under religious lenses, it was in a humanistic framework. The fact that people were so willing to emulate pagans shows that religious scruples were not really that significant, and the main focus of humanism, and by extension the Italian Renaissance, was still, by the end of the day, the human being. This is also seen in Italian depictions of God, which portrayed him in a similar manner to Zeus, with a prominent white beard. The thinkers of the Northern Renaissance were also not entirely opposed to humanism, however, they did not view the human as important of an end goal as God and the Christian faith.
