2024.05.15 16:40 Minute_Place6641 Where are the WFH jobs?

Actual WFH jobs
I see so many people wfh but what are you all doing? And is it all full time? I'm currently coming off maternity leave in the UK and will be doing training to become a swimming teacher(good pay and short hours). I'll be getting some money through this but long story short I need more money. Currently if I go to work I'm probably only getting minimum wage or just above other than the swimming job so I was looking for something flexible and WFH that I can do while my baby's in bed or napping just to top me up financially. I know it's a very specific job I'm looking for but I'm currently desperate. As I'm doing training for the swimming job I can't afford to do training for anything else otherwise I'd be looking into bookkeeping training or something similar but do have a little administrative experience from a few years ago. Everything I'm finding seems like a mlm or scam!
Are there any real part time work from home jobs out there?

2024.05.12 13:23 Morsnide Belief Coding

Hey. I wanted to share my experience of Belief Coding (popular in the UK). I am unsure whether it’s classed as an MLM but here goes. The website states “Belief Coding® is a revolutionary healing method that is science-backed and spiritual, changing beliefs at a subconscious level.” My friend became a Belief Coding facilitator about 2 years ago. I know they spent a good couple of grand at least on the training, and the rest since. They offered me a free session in return for a testimonial, this was around 6 months ago. I wanted to support them so I agreed to take part. It involved a Zoom call where they would guide me through a Belief Coding and Human Design session. They are a kind soul, genuine, would do anything for you. So I am sad they have become entrapped in this world which I believe to be a scam. The session tried to delve into my “discomforts” and use my subconscious to find out what’s holding me back. My friend is by no means trained to psychologically assess me or even support me if I become upset so I already feel uncomfortable talking about things that happened in my childhood. They keep delving, asking me to rock back and forth to determine the time I was born which gives me my human design (my path is already chose apparently due to the date/time I was born). They want to find out what my “limiting beliefs” are. Why I’m not succeeding at what I do, why my confidence is low. And they believe (as do all Belief Coding facilitators) that it links back to something that happened in our childhoods. I become quite uncomfortable, they keep prodding away, asking about something that happened as a child (I’d swayed back & forth to determine that my discomfort happened at a certain age). Kept asking me to try and remember what it was. In the end I just had to end the session. I apologised, I said first of all I’m sorry but I can’t give you any answers right now. Lots of things happened in my childhood, they are resolved, I didn’t need to speak to a friend about them. My friend posts lots of testimonials about their sessions, each one comes from another Belief Coding facilitator (I’m yet to see a genuine testimonial from someone who isn’t another facilitator). Jessica Cunningham (founder of BC) is laughing her way to the bank with lots of vulnerable peoples savings. This healing method claims to have helped people get rid of physical ailments such as rashes, chronic diseases or even rapid weight loss. I feel so awful for my friend but I also wanted to share my experience anonymously. I think we have to be very careful when it comes to people’s mental health and trying to assess & cure them using Belief Coding. Would love to hear others thoughts on this.

2024.05.08 20:12 milldrive Interlink Wealth Solutions Review: Uncovering the Truth Behind the Pyramid Scheme

Interlink Wealth Solutions Review: Uncovering the Truth Behind the Pyramid Scheme
Hey Reddit,
I want to share my thoughts on Interlink Wealth Solutions, a company that recently came onto my radar. If you’re like me, you might be curious about potential MLM opportunities, but it’s essential to know the facts before getting involved. So, let's dig into my review of Interlink Wealth Solutions to see what’s really going on.
Now before jumping in, for my number 1 recommended way to make money online that is tried, tested and true, click here for more info.

What's the Deal with Interlink Wealth Solutions?

Interlink Wealth Solutions Logo
Interlink Wealth Solutions is an MLM that offers a pricey membership at $1,450. Their website, “interlinkwealth.com,” was registered in April 2024, but the company itself claims to have been operating under a different name—GlobalHawk7. Supposedly, they originated in Australia in 2017, expanding to New Zealand, the UK, and finally North America by 2022. Their old domain, “globalhawk7.com,” now directs to Interlink Wealth Solutions, making it clear that this new venture is a reboot of their failed predecessor.
While Interlink Wealth Solutions talks big about providing a “private newsletter,” it doesn’t actually offer any retail products or services. The only thing affiliates can sell is membership itself. That’s a big red flag since legitimate MLMs should have real products or services to sell.

Digging Into the Compensation Plan

The compensation plan is pretty straightforward but also sketchy. Affiliates must pay the $1,450 fee to join and then receive a $1,250 commission when they recruit others who pay the same fee. But there's a catch: your first commission is “passed up” to the person who recruited you. So, you lose out on your first sale, but theoretically, if your recruits follow the same pattern, you could keep getting commissions from them and their recruits down infinite levels.

Why This Feels Like a Pyramid Scheme

When you think about it, the whole compensation plan hinges on recruiting new members. With no actual products to sell, Interlink Wealth Solutions is basically a recruitment chain. You make money only if you recruit others, and when recruitment dries up, there’s no revenue to keep it going. The whole structure will eventually collapse, and those at the bottom of the pyramid will lose out.
There’s also the issue of Interlink Wealth Solutions not providing details about their ownership or executive team. Their association with FedEx in marketing raises eyebrows, and the whole concept of affiliates receiving envelopes filled with cashier checks seems pretty suspicious. This setup could be considered mail fraud, putting it under the jurisdiction of both the FTC and the Postal Service.

Lessons from the Past: GlobalHawk7

It’s important to note that GlobalHawk7, Interlink Wealth Solutions’ predecessor, failed spectacularly. It was the same business model, and when recruitment slowed down, the company collapsed. This serves as a warning that history is likely to repeat itself with Interlink Wealth Solutions.

Wrapping It Up

Interlink Wealth Solutions looks like a pyramid scheme in disguise. The business is all about recruiting and doesn’t offer real products or services. Plus, they aren’t upfront about who’s running the company, which is a massive red flag. With no real way to generate income except through new recruits, it’s bound to collapse.
If you're considering joining Interlink Wealth Solutions, I suggest you think twice. The chances of losing money are high, and it's not worth the risk. Be careful, do your research, and always choose opportunities that have transparent practices and real products.
Let me know your thoughts or if you've had any personal experiences with Interlink Wealth Solutions. Stay informed and stay safe, Reddit!

2024.05.02 20:05 Skeptical102 AITAH for leaving my wife destitute in a foreign country

UPDATED:
This was over a decade ago now, but I still think about it often. A large group of our mutual friends cut off contact with me and I later found out it was because I apparently left my wife a pauper eating rotting food from bins in Spain. This all started the year before when in July my wife (F36) let's call her M decided our marriage was over and declared to me she wanted a separation.
I (M39) was the main breadwinner and paid all household and grocery expenses, and even a fair chunk of my pay into Ms personal bank account even though she earned her own money. She travelled a lot for work, as I did, but she could not afford to move out on her own or afford to take over the bills from me. So we cohabited awkwardly, organising travel to avoid each other, but making sure one of us was home to care for our 5 pets.
Initially I thought we could repair our marriage but by October suspected there was someone else. I was subsidising her to jet set around Europe while having a suspected affair. So I stopped payments from my pay to her personal account, and covering her groceries, and started divorce proceedings. She was furious, both about the divorce and the money. Somehow she thought I owed her, and this made our living situation very toxic. We were still talking and coordinating travel so someone was always home with our pets.
She was due to travel over Christmas and new year with her "new friends", and I had a long work trip in February which she had agreed she had no plans and would be there for the pets. While she was away she let me know she used and one way ticket and did not know when, or if she would be back. That created a huge problem for me financially and logistically to organise care for my pets, a housesitter, etc. I couldn't find someone that would care for our large dog and ended up taking him overseas on my work trip for 11 weeks at my own cost.
It took over a year to finalise the divorce, which to just get it over with I just about left myself bankrupt. With 2 years of support payments. Anyway, during that year we barely communicated except through lawyers, but at some stage during the year she reached out to me with some sob story about her rent money being stolen from her purse while on a work trip. She'd always been extra cautious with money, valuables and pickpockets, and it just didn't ring true. I was unmoved and said something like have you reported it to the police, and she just broke down and cried about how she couldn't afford to loose it and she didn't want to go to the police in a foreign country, etc. I refused to help. By the end of the Divorce she had over €100k in the bank, €600 a month support, a heap of the household furniture shipped to Spain and me responsible for her massive credit card bills.
Years later I crossed paths with one of the group of friends that cut me off to hear the story they had is I had left her broke and scrounging for food as one of the group that had visited her in Spain where she settled found her living in an unfurnished flat with cupboards and fridge bare except for some rotting vegetables. Should I feel responsible? AITAH for not helping out?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the replies. Rather than respond to specific comments I'll post answers here as much as possible:
The friend group that "sided" with her were not close friends. We'd met whilst on the show circuit with our dog.
Not sure about the timing of her "broke" phase. I assumed it was during the year the divorce was being finalised. Never occurred to me she'd have blown through the cash, but she was a spender. Massive credit card bill case in point.
As for the empty apartment with rotting food, I have a theory. My guess is that she was trying to hide the fact she was living with her new boyfriend (the boy toy comment made me laugh as he was younger than her). In the UK adultery is justification to get divorced, but does not impact the settlement. It was the kind of stupid thing she would do just to prove a point though. So I think she was actually living with new bf and only using the flat for show when visitors came to establish a story JIC we went to court. But who knows ?
Do I have concrete proof of her having a new boy, let alone shacking up with him? No. But there is circumstantial stuff like grocery receipts with packs of condoms (we had not been intimate in a while), pics of the guy in question on one knee to her, and the uni friend that let it slip at wedding I attended that she'd visited M and her lovely new boy on the way to the wedding (she flew from Australia to Scotland for said wedding). That wedding was before the divorce was final.
As for the divorce settlement: I kept the house, most of the furniture and most importantly the pets. The house had increased in value a lot in the 8 years we'd owned it so it was the extra mortgage cost not only if having borrowed more, but having the rate increased as the loan to value ratio went up. By the end I'd moved on and my new gf (now wife) had moved in and lawyers are expensive! Fighting would have meant we both got less and lawyers got more. I also had a chunk of land I inherited with my brother's well before I married M. She wanted my share included in the assets, the compromise meant it wasn't.
To the comments about paragraphs, entered this on my phone, and did use them. Edited with doubles now to make it easier for you to read :). Deffo not chatgpt generated!
As for her "job", well she'd fallen in with an alternative healing group. Think cross between reiki and mlm. She'd set up a business as a "healer", and was also getting paid to run the seminars/workshops across Europe run by the Guru (the only way to become an accredited master healer) and by the master healers (to do group healings and "spread the word"). She got a fixed fee for each, and covered her own travel expenses as a tax write off. So not well paid.

2024.04.28 19:25 Jaratii Beware of Aptive Environmental pest control

Last night around 8:30pm a solicitor for this company rang my doorbell 3 times, sending my dogs into a frenzy. After being told to leave multiple times, I eventually just had to shut the door and walk away. But I wanted to share some things I found out about this company, in case anyone is enticed by their "good deals". I think this goes beyond aggressive marketing and might be some sort of MLM or other type of scam.
I found that their accreditation with the Better Business Bureau was revoked last June due to "significant failure to support ethical business principles" (proof). Over 350 complaints have been filed against them in the last year alone, some being about their aggressive solicitation, but others about even more nefarious issues like hidden fees, neigh impossible cancellations, purposefully misleading contract pricing, abhorrent customer service, etc. Read some of the recent complaints on the BBB site I linked if you are curious.
They are also likely buying fake 5* reviews on google and other sites. The tech was very enthusiastic to show me the 4.3 or whatever they have on google, but if you look at other sites like Angie's List (link) they have a 2.8 or lower, with many of the reviews being about the issues I've mentioned, and most 5* reviews being very generic or completely lack text at all in some cases.
This issue isn't limited to RVA but it seems they have been ramping up marketing in the area. One of my neighbors fell victim to this recently, so I wanted to spread the word. Just for fun, here's some more links to posts on reddit from around the country:
PSA: Aptive Pest Control (buyer beware) from Eugene, OR
Is Aptive Environmental a scam? from Raleigh, NC
BUYER BEWARE - Aptive Environmental (pest control services) from Boston
Beware of Aptive pest control from RVA subreddit 2 years ago
There's also a post linked here from the anti-MLM subreddit that shares the perspective of a summer intern who worked for Aptive as a sales associate.

2024.04.26 16:06 TeenySod UK - is Cheeki Monkeys an MLM?

There's no mention of referral schemes or recruitment of others in the "job description" for event organisers on their website. The advert I saw on jobcentre (and reported, again, as "not an actual employment opportunity") reads similarly to an MLM pitch, and the postcode given relates to a range of local addresses including residential addresses. Not the registered office address.
Anyone know anything about these folks?

2024.04.25 21:48 Watermelon_blend BE Securities

I’ve seen posts about Royal Family posts in Facebook, promoted by so-called influencers, even a certain DJL.
I tried to research as much as I can, but lumalabas usually is the UK royal family(smart marketing to hide their name, if ever).
It looks to be typical MLM, flaunting as much as $500 a dollar a day with hashtag AI automation.
Wanted to see if there is some certain awareness about this, kase they are said to be affiliated with BE securities(red-flagged).
This is the only article I found:

Any thoughts on this one?

The IPO is set to price TOMORROW night - Wednesday, April 17 - to trade Thursday, April 18 – on the New York Stock Exchange.

2-Star SCOOP Rating The Consensus Call: Up 1/2 point to up 1 point

Size: 12.4 million shares at $18.00 to $21.00 to raise $241.8 million – if priced at the $19.50 mid-point

Market Cap: $1.7 billion - if priced at the $19.50 mid-point

UBS Investment Bank, BofA Securities, J.P. Morgan and Wells Fargo Securities are the joint book-runners.

*Note: The Street likes Carl Icahn’s involvement in a concurrent private placement through two of his investment vehicles.

Centuri Holdings (CTRI Proposed) Books Close at 4 P.M. EDT TODAY – Tuesday, April 16, 2024 - IPO Set to Price TOMORROW Night – Wednesday, April 17

Centuri Holdings, Inc. (CTRI Proposed)

2-Star SCOOP Rating The Consensus Call: Up 1/2 Point to Up 1 Point

The IPO Buzz: The Street hears that natural gas company Centuri Holdings’ IPO is “2 to 4 times covered” with no price sensitivity ahead of the books closing at 4 P.M. EDT TODAY – Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

The Street also hears price talk in the mid- to upper end of its $18.00-to-$21.00 price range on 12.4 million shares. The IPO is expected to raise $241.8 million, if priced at the $19.50 mid-point. (Incorporated in Delaware)

IPO investors like this energy play, which some say is coming at a reasonable size and price range at a time when oil is setting new highs.

The Centuri IPO has a 2-Star SCOOP Rating,

The Consensus Call: Up 1/2 point (up 50 cents) to up 1 point (up $1.00)

Centuri’s IPO is expected to price TOMORROW night – Wednesday, April 17, 2024 – to trade Thursday, April 18 – on the New York Stock Exchange.

The market cap is expected to be about $1.7 billion ($1,689.87 million), assuming the IPO is priced at the $19.50 mid-point.

UBS Investment Bank, BofA Securities, J.P. Morgan and Wells Fargo Securities are the joint book-runners.

The co-managers are Baird, KeyBanc Capital Markets and Siebert Williams Shank.

Southwest Gas Holdings Inc. (SWX), the parent of Centuri Holdings, is offering the stock in the IPO. After the IPO and the concurrent private placement, Southwest Gas Holdings will still own about 82.7 percent of Centuri’s outstanding stock.

“It’s right sector, right time,” a seasoned IPO pro says. “It’s (natural) gas. Look at oil right now, setting new highs."

The private placement for Icahn is also a plus factor, he said.

Note: Icahn Partners LP and Icahn Partners Master Fund LP, investment entities affiliated with Carl C. Icahn, have agreed to buy in a concurrent private placement 2.59 million shares (2,591,929 shares) at a price equal to the IPO price, the prospectus says. If these private placement shares are priced at the $19.50 mid-point of the IPO’s price range, the private placement would raise $50.51 million.

Centuri Holdings, based in Phoenix, is a leading pure-play North American utility infrastructure services company with over 110 years of operating history that partners with regulated utilities to maintain, upgrade and expand the energy network that powers millions of homes and businesses, the prospectus says.

“We are a leader in utility infrastructure services,” Centuri says in the prospectus.

“Our customers are leading electric, gas and combination utility companies across North America, including American Electric Power, Enbridge, Entergy, Exelon, NiSource, National Grid, Sempra Energy and Southern Company, among others,” the prospectus says.

“We also contract with certain large-scale 5G datacom providers to support increased utilization of 5G and network expansion with the addition of C-band and small cells.”

Centuri says that its top 10 and top 20 customers are almost exclusively investment-grade utilities. The top 10 customers represented 49 percent of its revenues during fiscal 2023, while the top 20 customers represented 71 percent of its revenues during fiscal 2023.

Financial Snapshot: Net loss of $0.19 million on $2.9 billion of revenue for the fiscal year that ended Dec. 31, 2023

2024.04.05 12:35 annebonnys Please help me plan a skincare routine

For background I'm 30F and have never had a skincare routine. At best I used moisturiser in the morning and that was it. I have combination skin with a very oily t zone that shines even without any makeup, so I've never wanted extra products/chemicals to make my skin worse or breakout. I also have very large pores which I'm very self conscious of.
In the last few months my routine has been:
Morning:
Paula's Choice BHA
Tropic Moisturiser
Night:
Tropic Cleanser
Tropic Toner
Paula's Choice BHA
Body Shop Moisturiser
Last night I brought COSRX snail essence, Saturday Skin Sleep Mask (to be used 3-5 times a week over moisturiser), Saturday Skin Moisturiser (to replace Body Shop) and Saturday Skin Eye Cream.
Is this okay:
Morning:
Water to wash face
Paula's Choice BHA
Snail Essence
Tropic Moisturiser
SPF (when UK finally has some sun)
Sebum Powder (reduce shining)
Night:
Tropic Cleanser
Tropic Toner
Paula's Choice BHA
Saturday Skin Moistuiser
Saturday Skin Eye Cream
Saturday Skin Sleep Mask (3x per week)
It just all seems a lot and I'm overwhelmed. I dont have much time at all in the morning so adding the Cleansing, Snail and Eye Cream seems too much.
Edit: I've just found out that Tropic is MLM so will be buying some Korean CleaneToneMoisturiser when they've ran out!

2024.03.21 00:35 Proud-Badger7568 If you think your salary is too low, here’s a reality check and what you can do about it:

Hello fellow Malaysians,
Summary:
I am writing this post because I am annoyed by all the doom-gloom post and people reinforcing negative and even dangerous notions about education and salary lately. This post is made to give a reality check of these issues and maybe provide some actually concrete advice LOL
As such, it will mainly be about the correlation between education and salary specifically for fresh grads (working populace also applicable) and less so about other (relevant) factors such as economy, politics, world economy, Malaysian policies and etc. Also, a disclaimer that it will not cover everyone and everything (including 1.9% of Malaysian OKUs, people in poverty, with family issues etc) but it will largely apply to the GENERAL populace.
Start post (or rant lol)
Item #1: Fresh, Master Grads
“is it normal to receive <2k a month in Malaysia”
“does it make sense to only get XXX”
Yes I get it, Malaysian economy is trash, our politics are bad, FDI is bad, rates are high, your hair cut is getting too expensive, nasi lemak is not rm1 anymore blablabla:
I am going to be brutally honest here, from an ACTIONABLE STANDPOINT (Keyword: ACTIONABLE) you deserve the salary you get because the market accurately priced you for who you are as a whole. The tightening of the world economy sort of amplifies that as it makes things more efficient / cost-saving.
Here’s some reasons why you get low salary (covers roughly 50-80%):
  1. Graduated from a below average uni (bonus points if you took a trash subject)
No your gender studies degree from TARUC isn’t going to help you land an MNC job that pay 5k a month if that’s what you’re asking. Be realistic, you are in no way competitive at all, you can’t demand anything. In economic terms you are a price taker, not a price setter.
  1. Graduated from an okay to good uni but has really weak character.
Okay, so daddy worked hard enough to get you into a decent uni in Malaysia, which means a lot of jobs should be available to you right? Right?!?!
But does this sound like you: “omgg malaysia is so badd rnnnn I giv up” “I went to dez uni cuz flens!!” “Idkkk Im so anxious of job searching” “I shuld just settle for my first job” “atleast is near to my house”
What a lot of people don’t get, is that your personality is also priced into the salary you will receive. WAIT WHY? Because you undervalue yourself and settle. A company offers you 1.5k, you don’t take effort to find another job, and you settle and complain. Instead, if you made the effort, pushed yourself, make the right choices, you would have gotten a much higher salary.
People keep saying mindset is everything etc (although half of the time it isn't) but it's very applicable in this case. You deserve to get more only when you become more than who you are.
  1. I AM A MASTER GRAD BUT IM PAID 3 CENTS a MONTH?
If not for the same reasons as above, competition is unfortunately extremely fierce in the current climate. You are competing with people with degrees all over the world.
Why the hell would any prestigious job EVER choose a masters degree or EVEN PHD from utar, inti, even private unis like taylors, sunway, nottingham when they could choose people from Melbourne, LSE, Cambridge, UCLA, Yale?
It’s not about work experience > education, that is only true for people with masters from trash unis or for experienced colleagues (in relevant and adequately prestigious work)
I’ve seen multiple fresh grads with prestigious masters get 8-12k starting salary EASY IN MALAYSIA. At mid 20s they are already at 20-30k, and it’s not even a small sample size.
  1. Personality Issues
“I am better than everyone else” “can you just fking give me the job or not” “I AM ENTITLED TO THIS!!! I WANT IT NOW” "you should do this for me"
Good luck :P
Item #2: Negative Reinforcement from Boomers
“You should be grateful you have a job?!?!?! BaCk In My DaY, I used to earn 10 cents a century and buy a Bugatti”
For people who make these sort of statements, just remember six floors is enough ;)
A salary of RM 1800 in 1990s would be worth RM 4700 now based solely on inflation rate, also lets not forget the disparity between income and house prices.
It's usually these old, uneducated, arrogant people that speak the loudest. Please know that this mindset is very damaging to the younger generation and adds on to fresh grads anxiety, social issues, and overall loss of hope in society and future.
Not to mention it gives employers more bargaining power to press employees down and keep salary low by using the same exact statement against them.
OMG THIS POST IS JUST EGO DESTROYING AND HUMILIATING ME!!! I SHALL DOWNVOTE THIS POST AND SPILL HATE COMMENTS!
Woah there, hold your horses pal, I'm not done yet; we're getting to the boring part:
Final Item #3: Solutions
Then Mr. Generic Name, As a Malaysian WHAT SHOULD I DO?!?!
Well, if you have decided not to complain to others and contribute to this doomspiral of negative BS for self-gratification, and convince others how Malaysia is screwed but not taking any action at all for yourself, here are some of the (real concrete) actions you can do so that you may have atleast some standard of living in the future:
  1. If you can’t afford a high-class uni or get a prestigious job, leave to Singapore.
Sorry but if you get <3k a month in a no name low-value corporate job, there’s no way you’ll ever become well-off. The only way to ensure some sort of standard of living is to move to Singapore. Even a janitor pays rm 8k a month, quicker and faster than your entire career growth in a life time if you worked in Malaysia.
Edit: this is about overall having MORE money, feeding your family etc in Malaysia and coming BACK to Malaysia to have a standard of living, not stay in sg. Staying in SG sucks but if you are left with rm2-3k work at a stale job in MY what would you choose?
  1. Join a commission-based job (i.e. Property/Insurance/Bank Sales)
Alternatively, if you must stay in Malaysia, the way to gain a decent maybe even impressive standard of living is if you worked your ass off in a commission-based job with growth. This is highly highly dependent on your likeability, personality, communication ability, and grind. There are various stories of people (and I know them from my circle as well) that make like 50k a month etc from these jobs, keep in mind they are the exception and not the norm. It takes a unique type of individual to achieve this.
  1. Get a loan to attend a high-class uni, with a high chance (please do risk calculation) of getting a prestigious job.
Saw few individuals (one studied at INTI) risk it all by taking massive loans to study MBA in the UK/US and end up taking high finance jobs in Singapore. Breakeven in a single year. A high-risk, high-reward method that could leave you swimming in debt though.
  1. Save for and study cheap but international and prestigious certs. Pivot into high paying jobs
There are various certs that may be worth to take (i.e. ACCA, CFA, etc) that have international reputation. They are much cheaper than the average prestigious degree and may or may not benefit your career growth depending on where you are in your career. At least, you can pivot you career into a much more prestigious and high-paying role.
  1. Go for “black money jobs”
If you would like to sell your soul to the devil, can try MLM, scams and etc :)
Notice how I never said start a business, because the realities of starting a business is very daunting, and I will not touch on that in this post.
End:
Again, what I mentioned is not at all comprehensive at all and if you have finished reading to this point, here's a thumbs up.
Everyone is consistently moaning about 2k salaries, blaming the economy, etc. It doesn't change anything. The world remains fcked unless you become a super influential figure, otherwise you are just a cog in the machine. You can't control external environments but you can control yours and make the world that SURROUNDS YOU, a better place than it was before.
Do what's best for you RUTHLESSLY and EFFICIENTLY.
Edit: Damn from this post I realised atleast 50% of Malaysian are idiots, crab mentality of a bunch of egoistic lazy people who aren’t smart enough to form an own opinion except blame others.
No wonder we are paid so low and Singapore is so much better. Fyi, Self denial isn’t gonna change anything.
Cry me a riverrr

The news has reported that apparently the college has been holding on to students financial aid money and almost every staff that worked there quit or was fired and now they’ve switched to online.

2024.02.25 15:05 afterandalasia Wisteria Symbolism & Queer Links

(Hi mods I actually finished it now. Sorry about that.)
This is a little aside from my main literary analysis, but I got sidetracked into a history of wisteria and found it intriguing.
Taylor mentions wisteria in the lakes, the deluxe track from folklore.
I want to watch wisteria grow right over my bare feet,
'cause I haven't moved in years.

There are four species of wisteria plants, one native to the southeastern United States, two to Japan, and one to China. We have a lot of them in the UK, where they're technically invasive but also considered a standard of stately homes and old cottages alike. Some parts of the plants are poisonous, while others are edible if prepared in certain ways - a real duality. The flowers range across white, pink and purple, but are most commonly and most famously lilac or lavender in colour.
One of the most famous is the Sierra Madre Wisteria Vine, known as the "Lavender Lady".
Potential queer link one: lavender

The plants were named Wisteria by botanist Thomas Nuttall (don't google this name too blindly, there's now a male porn star with the same name) who named them either after American scientist Caspar Wistar or perhaps after Nuttall's "close friend" Charles Jones Wister Sr. Charles Wister was married twice and had several children, and doesn't seem to be a very public figure. Nuttall, however, is better known - he never married, doesn't seem to be linked with any women, and though I can't find anything specific about him I get vibes. (Maybe he was aroace, maybe mlm.) Folks of his time called him "queer", but in those days it would have meant "strange". He was devoted to botany, and discovered, described and identified hundreds of species. (Yes, in many cases native peoples of the land already knew about the flowers, but Nuttall at times identified separate species where nobody, colonist or indigenous, had previously done so, and also studied plants from outside the north americas.
Potential queer link two: A confirmed bachelor named it for his close male friend but in a subtle way.

Since two of four plants are native to Japan, Japan seems to have the most folklore about them. They are linked to 藤娘, Fuji Musume, or The Wisteria Maiden, which is now best known as a classic kabuki dance often considered the pinnacle of kabuki performance. In the story, a painting of a woman falls in love with a man who views her portrait and comes to life, but even as she expresses her love for him he either does not hear or does not reply, until the pain of her unrequited love becomes too much and she returns to being a painting. It is still often performed today, for example this 2022 Japan National Theatre production.
Potential queer link three: This female role was made famous by a male performer.
Some places describe this as not just an unrequited love, but a socially forbidden or disallowed love. I don't speak enough Japanese to look deep into this, but even coming across this interpretation is interesting.
Potential queer link four: Forbidden love.
Beside the queer links, it's very interesting comparing Taylor, who has extensively contrasted her social/public front and her real self, to a painting that comes to life because of love only to retreat to being an image when rejected.

Wisteria is known for being extremely long-lived; some plants are confirmed to be nearly 150 years old at this time. The plant is also extremely resilient, with rough treatment and clipping or damage that would kill many other plants leading the wisteria to instead grow back stronger and more beautiful. ("I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time, I rose up from the dead" would like a word.)
Some places link wisteria directly to LGBTQ+ history, as Alice Austen House which included it in its Queer Ecologies Garden Project which challenges binary concepts of sex and gender. Alice Austen was herself a groundbreaking queer photographer who lived from 1866 to 1952.
Potential queer link five: We love us some purple flowers, and so does this queer garden maintained by a queer horticulturalist in the residence of a queer photographer.

The word "wisteria" also pops up in another quite famous British canon - that of the original Sherlock Holmes stories. "The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge", by Arthur Conan Doyle, was originally two separate stories - "The Singular Experience of John Scott Eccles" and "The Tiger of San Pedro". The former of these (Wikipedia summary, or read legally for free online) is the important one - it is a murder mystery full of secrets and lies, particularly in the form of secret identities. However, what is not outright stated, but is very strongly and deliberately implied that John Scott Eccles was gay and that he and Garcia were lovers. It has even been pointed out that Mr David Sherlock and Mr Hugh Holmes were the barristers defending two gay men accused of sodomy in the 1884 Dublin Castle Scandals.
Potential queer link six: Wisteria is in the title of Arthur Conan Doyle's story with the most overt gay subplot.

And it's still used today! For example, Wisteria Magazine is an online zine that prioritises the voices of LGBTQ+ and POC individuals.

2024.02.11 22:02 Perpetua11y_C0nfused Have I Become An Old Miserable Pessimist?

Lately I have found myself in a position where I have been giving career advice to many late teenagers and people who are considering a career change.
I have become increasingly frustrated with people who seem to live in a fantasy world.
Recent examples:
As a woman in my late thirties who has been put through the ringer over the years jobs wise, and has had to eat my pride and done whatever disgusting cleaning job possible to make sure rent is paid, or worked multiple jobs, and given up evening, weekends, christmas, etc, and spent literal weeks of my life applying to any job I can get when I have come unstuck, I have zero patience for these fantasies.
I can be pretty blunt. I tell them as politely as I can, that although that dream sounds nice, what do they plan to do in the interim? I don’t want to hear the ‘dream’, I want to hear a sensible, acheivable plan of action as to how they’re going to finance their lifestyle.
Someone said to me the other day that I am pessimistic, and that I shouldn’t be so harsh, and maybe they ‘might’ achive their goal.
Yes, I know they ‘might’ in time, and with A LOT of work, but what is their plan for paying next weeks rent?
Does anybody else think some people are struggling to adjust to the reality of the UK job market and how you don’t get your dream job just because you want it, or have I simply become a bitch after being bitten in the arse too many times?

2024.02.09 11:41 DontBullyMyBread Leggings like Lularoe without being an mlm

Maybe a bit of a weird request - I just watched Lularich (late to the party I know). I really want to buy some cute patterned leggings similar to Lularoe from an actual store/retailer that isn't an MLM or similar scam/dodgy/whatever. Any recommendations? A lot of the stores I usually shop in just have block colours or patterns I don't like.
I'm in the UK :)

2024.01.30 09:28 fwmh_royale is this retail job a red flag?

i applied to a summer retail assistant position a few weeks ago at a VERY prestigious place (landmark, not store) in london (UK). the application process was alright but drawn out - most of the questions were about my 'personal details' rather than me as a candidate but whatever, i wasn't bothered.
i got an email the other day that my application had progressed to the 'interview stage', except the 'interview' is going to be 2 hour presentation from the manager. the email made it sound like there is only a 50/50 chance i'd actually get an interview on that day.
they also want me to bring a bunch of documents of more 'personal details' - a bunch of security forms and a passport size photo.
i wouldn't be too bothered, but last time i needed to bring a photo and sit through a presentation prior to interview it turned out to be a scammy MLM job. if this job wasn't at such a prestigious place i'd probably have turned it down by now, but i don't know if stuff like this is normal for jobs in prestigious places.
please help me - will i regret it if i go to the 'interview?' i'm not a huge fan of sitting through a 2 hour presentation to get the same cashier job i got after a 20 minute interview in my hometown!
