Crowdsource Request: Hitting Tendencies

2023.01.01 22:38 Alternative_Research Crowdsource Request: Hitting Tendencies

Hey all!
I've been working on a list of MLB the Show players and their Hitting Tendencies (push, pull, extreme pull). I believe 90% of the Legends are balanced but was wondering if anyone could let me know if any of the following 949 players are NON-Balanced. I do plan on publishing the list as soon as we feel it's mostly done!

2020.12.10 22:21 uggsandstarbux Uggs' Full Offseason Mock (Staff Changes, FA, and 7 Rd Mock)

Heyo. I've (for some reason) decided to venture out into creating a mock of the entire offseason (up to the draft). It's taken me quite a while, but it has been an interesting exercise. Note that I am not a cap expert by any means. But I used overthecap for all my figures and have taken a stab at what I think teams should/would do. Let me know if I misunderstood something. Draft order from Tankathon.
Full mock available here
Team by team notes:
NFC NORTH
GB
This scenario has the packers losing in the NFC Championship game. With limited cap space, there are some crucial cap actions taken. Trading/cutting Rodgers would free up the most space, but he's having an MVP year and Jordan Love is still on the bench behind Tim Boyle. Preston Smith is cut, freeing up $12M. While Smith was phenomenal in 2019, he's taken a step back this year with only 4 sacks compared to the 10.5 he had at this same point last year. 2nd year man Rashan Gary has taken a step up as well, starting the last 2 games and totaling the same amount of sacks on nearly half the snaps. WR Davante Adams also only has one year on his deal, so an extension is obvious. That should free up some cap this year (I've estimated $4M). Lazard and Tonyan are also retained on minimal deals.
In the draft, the Packers have several needs to address. In the 1st, I gave them WR Rondale Moore, who I think is the perfect compliment to Adams. Moore should excel in the slot, and his ability to take any catch to the house will open up the playbook for Rodgers and Adams. Randunz is the next acquisition. This allows the Packers to slide Billy Turner into RG, filling some of the interior void left by Linsley's departure. Onwuzurike, Jack Jones, and Werner fill obvious needs. Borghi is a pick to fill out the RB corps. I expect Dillon to be the lead back in 2021, but the 250 lbs back only had 21 career receptions. Borghi should be the perfect spell to Dillon. He had 4x the receiving work in 2019 alone.
MIN
In the current standings, the Vikes are the 7th seed. Cousins's play over the last month has bolstered the team's confidence in him, and a move can be made to compete in 2021. By cutting Reiff and Rudolph, the team frees nearly $20M in cap, giving them room to re-sign Odenigbo and Dozier, two under the radar players who have been solid for us in 2020. Andy Dalton comes in to be the backup to Cousins, and John Miller will compete at RG as we move Ezra Cleveland to LT.
With safety unaddressed in free agency, Jevon Holland is an obvious first round pick. Holland is a smart, physical player. While he hasn't shown super versatile tape at Oregon, I believe he has the athleticism to succeed in either safety spot. Zion Johnson, Charlie Kolar, and Dante Stills add depth to three positions that need it. Rakeem Boyd at 201 was a value pick to me. It'll give us flexibility when Mattison's contract is up.
CHI
Chicago has had a miraculous fall from grace. The offseason begins with a complete overhaul in the front office. Pace is coasting off the Mack trade and Fangio's subsequent work with the defense, but his failures in the QB room are inexcusable. Robert Saleh comes in to lead the team, getting the Bears back to the formula that has proven successful over the history of their franchise: defense. He brings Anthony Lynn in to run the offense, a coach that will get the most out of the running game.
The big move for the bears is the acquisition of Carson Wentz. I wasn't sure what Wentz's price would be, but the Bears move from 44 to 70 and give up a future 5th to pick up Wentz and his monstrous contract. Wentz has proven in the past that he can be an MVP caliber player. With a strong defense and a run-oriented offense, the hope is for Wentz to be able to manage the game early in Chicago to re-build his confidence. The team also brings in Corey Davis to replace Allen Robinson. While Davis isn't the dominant alpha he was drafted to be, he proved this year that he can be a solid player that frees up space for someone like Darnell Mooney.
Finding a QB via trade gives the Bears the chance to draft Alex Leatherwood to replace the now-cut Bobby Massie at OT. Atwell in the 3rd gives the Bears a dangerous weapon to play next to Davis, and Ford should challenge Gipson for starting reps early. This draft focuses on building Saleh's dream team.
DET
The second team in the division to overhaul their staff, the Lions lure Lincoln Riley away from Oklahoma. Riley brings in an experienced Thomas Dimitroff, who built multiple great teams in Atlanta, to take care of the finer details, and Mike Smith comes in to run the defense. Riley is a young coach that will get the most out of Stafford and his young offense. He'll implement a creative passing attack complimented by a dangerous duo on the ground.
The big move of the offseason is franchise tagging Kenny Golladay. Golladay is a talented WR in the prime of his career. This team shouldn't let him walk. But with a new regime and with Golladay coming off an injury-riddled year, a one year prove it deal makes sense for both sides. Nicholas Williams, Danny Shelton, and Christian Jones are all cut as well, creating over $12M in cap space.
With Golladay retained, there are no obvious holes in the starting offensive lineup. At 12, they get a call from New Orleans with an offer akin to what the Bills got in the Mahomes trade. While Marvin Wilson, Caleb Farley, and Joseph Ossai are tempting, so is the chance to build a long term future for this team. At 31, the Lions draft LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah out of Notre Dame. JOK is an athletic LB with plenty of experience starting. He and Christian Barmore are instant starters for this lackluster front. Kadarius Toney comes in to compliment Golladay. A bit of an older prospect, Toney is a dynamic athlete that gives the Riley a fun toy. Watson in the 3rd will rotate across from Flowers. And D'Eriq King at 132 is an interesting project for this team. King has all the talent in the world, and he's having a good year at Miami. He's just inconsistent. There is a chance he's the heir to Stafford in the Motor City.
NFC WEST
LAR
The Rams are in a bit of a tight spot cap wise. With so much money tied into just a handful of players, Les Snead is forced to let a lot of key contributors go. Whitworth retires, and A'Shawn Robinson is cut. Higbee, Woods, and Kupp are asked to restructure their deals. Darious Williams gets an RFA tender to stay with the team, and Riley Reiff is brought in to replace Whitworth at LT.
In the draft, the Rams must focus on filling out the spots on their roster that aren't supported by one of the 4 or 5 superstars on the team. Victor Dimukeje is the first pick, addressing an edge spot. Deonte Brown gives the team some flexibility with Blythe leaving in FA. The rest of the draft are prospects we hope to take over in a couple years.
SEA
The Seahawks are in a bit of a surprising spot as one of the only powerhouse teams with a plethora of cap space. That cap space allows them to retain several key free agents, including the Griffin brothers, Geno Smith, Ethan Pocic, and Chris Carson. They also have the space to extend Lockett and Jamal Adams on front loaded deals. Unfortunately, the Seahawks only have four picks in this draft. They need to make the most out of those picks, adding a pass rusher, a depth CB, an OL, and a potential WR3.
ARI
The Cardinals are oh so close to being a real threat. They retain a couple key free agents in Patrick Peterson and Hasaan Reddick, while adding Jamaal Williams to utilize alongside Edmonds. Bashaud Breeland is also added. He has played well in spurts in KC and should compete with a rookie to be the starter opposite Peterson in nickel and dime.
With only 5 picks in the draft and with the top 2 CBs off the board at 15, the Cardinals are looking to trade down. The Jets send over an offer, the Arizona netting the 2.33 and 5.161 to move down 10 spots. That allows the team to add lauded Gamecocks CB Jaycee Horn as well as a mauler in Trey Smith. Brevin Jordan and Tamorrion Terry join the skill position group, giving the team options with Fitzgerald gone and Kirk in a contract year. The rest of the draft adds depth to the defense.
SF
I debated moving Garroppolo, but I think he works well in the Shanahan offense and deserves a chance to play healthy ball. Instead, I have the 9ers trading for S Malcolm Jenkins to lead the secondary. Richard Sherman also returns on a team friendly deal, along with Trent Williams, Kyle Juszczyk, and Nick Mullens. Dee Ford is cut, freeing $16M in cap space. And Todd Gurley is added on a cheap deal to fill out a RB corps with almost everybody leaving in FA.
The 9ers are true to their needs in the draft. They stop Caleb Farley's freefall at 14 before grabbing a starting center in the 2nd. Then they double down on CB again before adding a depth edge rusher and a WR3. Felton and Mond are interesting prospects that should be given the chance to learn.
NFC SOUTH
NO
The Saints are in cap hell. No doubt about it. So a lot of my moves were to try to relinquish them from that terrible spot. After 2 injury riddled seasons, Drew Brees retires. A number of cuts are made to key players with big cap numbers, including Kwon Alexander ($13.4M), Janoris Jenkins ($10M), Nick Easton ($6M), David Onyemata ($7.5M), and Malcolm Brown ($5M). Lattimore and Ramczyk are extended, freeing up a bit of 2021 space and kicking the can down the road.
In the draft, I made a move that I'm sure will go unquestioned by Saints fans: I traded the farm for Zach Wilson. In a package similar to the Chiefs' trade up for Mahomes, the Saints give a future 1st along with this year's 2nd and 4th to to move to 12 to draft Wilson ahead of the Bears and 49ers. I know that Taysom Hill has been effective as the starting QB in Brees's absence, but I still have doubts about his long term viability. Wilson gives them a bit more. He's got a super consistent arm and is strong on the ground. His rookie deal gives the Saints the chance to build a powerhouse again. He, Ramczyk, Lattimore, Kamara, and Thomas will be the future of the Saints.
New Orleans spends the rest of the draft addressing their depth chart. Vincent can push for a starting role. Coxie adds to a depleted WR corps. Smith, Landman, and Jones join a defense with plenty of established leaders.
TB
The big news with the Bucs is that Brady is back. That gives this whole team one more shot at running the table. With a good amount of cap space, the team is able to re-sign Godwin and David to long term deals. Sheldon Rankins and Le'Veon Bell join the team as well to replace the departed Suh and Fournette, respectively. However, Shaquille Barrett is a free agent departure, chasing greener (read: money) pastures in Boston.
The focus on the draft is to find players that will help the team win now. In the 1st round, Quincy Roche from Miami is the choice. Roche is a well-developed edge rusher with a wide variety of moves to beat OTs. He should start across from JPP immediately. Etienne is the second pick. While Ronald Jones and Le'Veon Bell are a formidable duo, Etienne is something else. He's an uber talented back that can do everything you want in a bellcow. He'll challenge for RB1 snaps early. Mayfield falls to the Bucs at 84; he'll spend a year learning from Donovan Smith before taking over at LT. Robertson and Ferguson address depth needs. Thomas and Bryant are an attempt to find some upside players that can be efficient rotating into the lineup. And Franks is a Mr. Irrelevant with a cannon arm that is a pure upside dart throw
ATL
The first thing to discuss with Atlanta is their revamped front office. Nick Caserio comes over from New England, and he brings along with him Chiefs' ST coordinator Dave Toub to take over as head coach. Toub runs a stout unit in KC, and he should be able to enforce some discipline to a lackluster group. He brings in Matt Nagy to run the offense and Anthony Weaver to run the defense.
The offseason is one dedicated to building a team in Toub's mold. Overpaid and underproductive, Dante Fowler, Ricardo Allen, Allen Bailey, and James Carpenter all get the boot. Kenyan Drake is brought in to start at RB, and Romeo Okwara comes over from a quietly solid year in Detroit.
The draft for Atlanta is about maintaining a solid core this year while finding pieces for the future. They select the first edge rusher of the class, Michigan's Kwity Paye. Paye is an athletic freak that has managed to turn upside into actual production in his 2020 campaign. They also add Mac Jones in the 2nd round, giving the team options if/when Matt Ryan hangs it up. Adebo in the 3rd and Sterns in the 4th are physical players that can push for starting time while playing Toub's brand of football. Zamir White at 149 adds youth to an older RB group.
CAR
Matt Rhule has built a solid team in Charlotte. The wins aren't always there, but the team plays tough and has a great foundation. Rhule's first task of the offseason is to replace Joe Brady. He does so by promoting OL coach Pat Meyer, who has been coaching on the offensive side of the ball for over a decade. They retain their OT duo in Okung and Moton with a pair of big contracts, and they manage to bring back Mike Davis.
The first 6 picks of the draft fall perfectly for the Panthers. Micah Parsons is the best defender in the draft, and the Panthers have been abysmal at LB without Kuechly. Vera-Tucker in the 2nd gives the team a new starter at OG, while Newsome, Wiggins, and Taylor give the team the ability to show different personnel groupings.
NFC EAST
NYG
The Giants are having a good year under Joe Judge. So good that Dave Gettleman actually keeps his job. The first act of the offseason? Cutting Kevin Zeitler. While Zeitler has been a solid player for the G-men, he frees $12M in cap space, giving them room to sign Leonard Williams, Logan Ryan, and Kyler Fackrell to long term deals.
The draft is where Judge and Gettleman build on the strong foundation they have. Ossai is a mammoth pass rusher that reminds me of Z Smith. Patrick Graham should have a lot of fun with him. And Tylan Wallace, while he won't be confused with Ja'Marr Chase, is an underrated route runner with an excellent catch radius. The rest of the draft fills out the starting lineup while also finding good value.
WAS
Ron Rivera has built a strong team in DC. He'll keep the core of his team while making a couple splash moves. First is retention. With plenty of cap space, the Football Team is able to sign Scherff, Darby, and Hopkins to long term deals. They also trade a 6th rounder for Emmanuel Sanders to help the Saints get out of cap hell, and they are able to attract a few key free agents: LB Jayon Brown, TE Zach Ertz, and OT Matt Feiler. This leaves Rivera without too many needs going into the draft.
That allows Rivera to make a big move: trading up for Trey Lance. Yes the Football team gives up a handful of picks including two 2nds to move up for their franchise QB. While some prefer Wilson, I think Lance is the perfect prospect to sit behind Alex Smith (who is actually my pro comp for him). He'll learn from the same mind that molded Patrick Mahomes, taking over the reigns once Rivera is confident in him. The rest of the Washington draft is a solid group of supporting cast. Carman is a solid OT for Clemson, and McGrone can get some quality reps in as a rookie. Tre Walker should usurp Cam/Steven Sims as the WR3 and Hufanga gives the team some flexibility on defense.
PHI
This Eagles team is a really hard one to predict. I'm choosing one particular path this time, but things could just as easily move in a day or two. For now, Pederson and Roseman's SB win gets them another year with the team. However, Hurts's upward climb puts Carson Wentz on the outs. I'm not sure what Wentz's price will be, but the Eagles are just trying to free some cap. They offload his contract to the Bears for a move up the draft board from 70 to 44, as well as a conditional 5th.
This offseason also has a ton of cuts for Philly. On top of Kelce's retirement, Goodwin, Jeffery, DeSean, Ertz, and Malik Jackson are cut. Barnett is extended and Graham's deal is restructured. This just barely gets the team in the black. They don't have any room to sign free agents.
With heavy turnover in free agency, the draft should be focused on getting help for Jalen Hurts. Ja'Marr Chase at 6 is perhaps the easiest way to do so. Chase is a better prospect than any of the WRs from last year's class, and he and Reagor will form the best young WR duo in the league. Myers in the 2nd gives the team a replacement for Kelce, and Moses shortly afterward replaces Nate Gerry. The rest of the draft adds depth, with some very good value picks in Teague and Clemons.
DAL
The Cowboys start the offseason by firing Mike Nolan and hiring McCarthy's old buddy Dom Capers to run the defense. Their next priority is retaining Dak Prescott, and they'll let everyone else walk to get it done. Dak signs a long term deal for $38.5M a year, giving this team a strong offensive core to build around.
In the draft, Dallas addresses their terrible defense. Surtain is the pick at 1.04, reuniting the 2019 Crimson secondary. Moehrig is a dynamic safety that will continue improving their defense. Slater in the 3rd is a solid depth piece to play swing tackle and possibly OG for the Boys. Jamie Newman in the 4th is a fun pick. He's a raw talent with a very inconsistent arm. But there is hope that he'll get his arm in check and develop into a very capable QB behind Dak.
AFC NORTH
PIT
With the best record in the league, the Steelers are currently slated to win the SB. That means a lot of beer, and a lot of turnover. Ebron and Vince Williams are cut, making room for extensions for Watt and Fitzpatrick. DeCastro and Tuitt are restructured and Villanueva returns on a cheap deal. After a joke in April that he's already bought a beach house in Malibu, Ben stays for another year.
The draft is focused on getting cheap talent to supplement a strong defense centered around Watt, Fitzpatrick, and Bush. The Steelers trade out of their 1st round pick, adding a 4th and a future pick. At 2.40, they draft local TE Pat Freiermuth, the most well rounded prospect of the class. They then turn around and draft UNC's Javonte Williams to be the new lead back. Williams is a dynamic runner with a powerful mindset that should thrive in the Steel City. Christensen and Hutcherson provide a youth resurgence to the oldest OL in the league, and Desmond Ridder in the 4th is yet another attempt to find an eventual Big Ben replacement. With Jordan Berry having a poor couple years, the Steelers also add Oscar Bradburn in the 7th.
CLE
It's 2020 and the Browns finish ahead of the Ravens. Well in this scenario, Cleveland has plenty of cap to spend. And they are going to get the most out of it before Mayfield, Chubb, and Ward are due for new deals. They re-sign Malcolm Smith to anchor their LB corps while shelling out money for two former Vikings (Xavier Rhodes, Anthony Harris) and adding Smith's former teammate (KJ Wright). They also manage to offload Njoku's $6M deal to the Jets for a 5th round pick.
In the draft, Cleveland fortifies their flawed defense. Jaylen Twynam out of Pitt is the first pick and is the obvious long term replacement for both Richardson and Ogunjobi. Carlos Basham from Wake falls to 60, where the Browns take him to play opposite DROY candidate Myles Garrett. Seth Williams sneaks into the 3rd. He'll be an interesting red zone guy for CLE. The rest of the draft addresses several depth needs on defense. Trey Sermon in the 5th gives this team flexibility to let either Chubb or Hunt walk when their deals expire. And Ian Book is an interesting late round pick to be the long term backup QB.
BAL
While the Ravens were unable to follow up their 2019 success, they do have plenty of cap to make a move for 2020. They retain a lot of their talent, including Jimmy Smith and RGIII. They cut Mark Ingram for $5M as well. There are two big moves in Baltimore though: re-signing Yannick Ngakoue for a below market deal and pulling Allen Robinson over from Chicago. The former will give the Ravens a true edge rusher for the next 3 years while the latter finally give Baltimore a chain mover on the outside.
Baltimore plays the draft how they usually do: excellently. They draft Wyatt Davis in the 1st, finding an actual replacement for the now 200 lbs Marshall Yanda. In the 2nd, they get a good deal with Michigan's Aidan Hutchinson, a high floor technical pass rusher to replace Matthew Judon. Garrett, Lake, and Fisher give the Ravens flexibility with the impending free agency status of guys like Brandon Williams, DeShone Elliott, and LJ Fort.
CIN
While I'm not sure Zac Taylor is the answer, history has shown that Mike Brown will sit on an inept coach for years. Something that does change is the firing of DC Lou Anarumo, who is replaced by PIT DL coach Karl Dunbar.
There are a couple obvious moves as the Bengals enter free agency. First is to cut OT and flat earth/anti vax enthusiast Bobby Hart, freeing $5.9M in cap. Then Williams Jackson is signed to a long term deal paying him $17.5M a year. Mike Brown lures matthew Judon away from Baltimore, adding a pass rusher that is much needed for this defense. And Marcus Mariota comes over on a cheaper deal to be the backup to Burrow.
At 1.03 the pick is obvious for Cincy: Oregon's Penei Sewell. Zaven Collins in the 2nd is a pick I quite like as well. He's a rangy LB that should give the middle of the defense a much needed face lift. And Patrick Jones in the 3rd should rotate in behind Hubbard and Judon as an effective edge player.
AFC WEST
KC
The 2019 Champs are a bit tight on cap this offseason, but they can easily free some space up by extending/restructuring Tyrann Mathieu and Eric Fisher. They also retain Demarcus Robinson on a cheap deal. They also have to contend with replacing OC Eric Bieniemy and ST Dave Toub, both of whom are now HCs. They do so by internally promoting QB coach Mike Kafka and Asst. ST coach Andy Hill.
In the draft, Andy Reid finds a local kid that can maul guys in Creed Humphrey. Sage Surratt, who is a skyscraper of a man, is a solid choice in the 2nd with so many WRs leaving in free agency. And Shaka Toney in the 3rd is an upside player that can rotate into the lineup. Hubbard falling all the way to 177 was a deal that was too good to pass up on. He fills the role left by Le'Veon Bell.
LV
Even though they are in a good spot cap-wise, the Raiders have a few obvious moves. Tyrell Williams, Marcus Mariota, and Richie Incognito are all cut, freeing over $28M in cap. Nelson Agholor and Devontae Booker, two surprisingly good free agent acquisitions last year, are both retained on multi-year deals. And Roy Robertson-Harris is signed from Chicago. This gives the Raiders some flexibility going into the draft.
With their first pick, they take my favorite DT in the class: FSU's Marvin Wilson. Wilson is a highly disruptive player that can play all over the DL. He's had a quiet year, but he will surely blow up the Combine. They also add Kyle Trask in the 2nd round. While Derek Carr has been good, Trask gives the Raiders a second option should they try to pin the blame for a disappointing season on someone. LeCounte in the 3rd is a great value in my book. He's a rangy playmaker that can start opposite Abram.
DEN
I think the team gives Elway and Fangio one more shot. Which in turn means that Drew Lock should be getting another year. The team focuses on giving Lock what he needs to succeed. They re-sign Tim Patrick and place cheap tenders on Alexander Johnson and Phillip Lindsay. They add S Marcus Williams to replace Justin Simmons and add Austin Blythe to take over at center. Trubisky comes in as a cheap backup as well.
Denver has a few key needs to address in the draft. In the 1st, they draft Samuel Cosmi to play RT. Cosmi is a bit raw, but he's got some solid tools and is a big upgrade over Demar Dotson. Then they add Eric Stokes in the 2nd to get younger in the secondary. Jabril Cox comes in to play next to Johnson, and Gainwell is a great value pick that gives the team flexibility with both Gordon and Lindsay on 1 year deals.
LAC
The Chargers are a team I have firing their coaching staff. While Lynn is a very likeable guy, he just isn't cutting it as the head coach. Instead, Telesco brings in Eric Bieniemy, who retains Gus Bradley on defense and brings over Michael Clay from SF to coach the special teams. Bieniemy is the cream of the crop this offseason, and he'll get the chance to work with perhaps the best young QB in the league.
The Bolts make some big moves in free agency. They extend Mike Williams and Casey Hayward and re-sign Henry and Ingram. They also bring in Corey Linsley to take over at center, as well as Winston and Fournette as backup players.
In the draft, the Chargers trade out of the 4th pick in exchance for a pair of 2nds and some later picks. This lets them draft OT Christian Darrisaw at 11, one of my favorite linemen in the draft. They also add Amon-Ra St. Brown and Deommodore Lenoir in the 2nd, two players that should see significant snaps as rookies. The rest of the class is largely spent providing depth to a defense whose money is largely spent on Joey Bosa. They also add a punter in the 6th to improve what might be the worst special teams unit of all time.
AFC SOUTH
TEN
The Titans don't have too splashy of an offseason here. They do lose OC Arthur Smith to a HC gig, but they bring Tim Kelly over from Houston to coach an offense that includes his brother. They also hire Joe Houston from New England to take over an atrocious special teams unit.
Free agency is quiet. The team re-signs Ty Sambrailo, Anthony Firkser, and Khari Blasingame. They also sign Eric Wilson from Minnesota. The big losses are TE Jonnu Smith, WR Corey Davis, and LB Jayon Brown.
The draft is where the Titans bolster their defense. They draft Penn State's Jayson Oweh in the first. He's a high upside pass rusher that should provide more of a presence than Clowney ever did. Chris Olave is a player I really like to replace CD's production. Jon Robinson doubles down at EDGE with Joe Tryon in the 3rd before addressing some needs with Molden, Eubanks, and Tonga. They are also the first team to draft a kicker, grabbing Evan McPherson out of Florida. McPherson has hit all but one career PAT, and he's got a career 86.8%, including two seasons of 89.5%.
IND
In the front office, the Colts lose DC Matt Eberflus to the Texans. To replace him, they hire Raheem Morris, who has put together a decent turnaround in Atlanta. With all of the cap space available to the team, the Colts are active in retaining talent. They bring back Rivers, Houston, and Autry. Then they extend Quenton Nelson and restructure Anthony Castonzo to free up even more money. They add Janoris Jenkins and Will Fuller in free agency, replacing Xavier Rhodes and TY Hilton. They do make a move for Sam Darnold, giving up a 3rd round pick to see if the former Trojan can be fixed by the QB guru that is Frank Reich.
The Colts address their needs in the draft. Shaun Wade's underwhelming season playing outside corner has him falling to Indy at 23. They then add Terrace Marshall in the 2nd, giving them one of the best young WR groups in the league. Koonce is a developmental prospect in the 3rd; he can hopefully take over for Houston when the time comes.
HOU
The Texans have a busy offseason. The bring Scot Fitterer from Seattle to sit in an actual general manager position. In turn, he hires Colts DC Matt Eberflus, who has gotten elite production from subpar talent during his time in Indy. Scot Linehan comes in to run the offense.
With the cap not doing anyone any favors, the Texans cut Duke Johnson and Brandon Dunn, freeing nearly $9M. They get the most out of their limited draft as well. They add Asante Samuel Jr in the 3rd and Nico Collins in the 4th, adding depth to two depleted positions. Ronnie Perkins rotates across from Watt and Martin, and Kylin Hill gives a bit of dynamics that David Johnson doesn't have.
JAX
While Doug Marrone still has a job, I have little doubt that he'll be unemployed come January. Instead, the Jags land the dream team in the front office. They pry George Paton (who has turned down multiple GM jobs) from Minnesota and hire the hottest hand in the league, Joe Brady, away from Carolina to run the team. Brady hires NO TE coach Dan Campbell to help him on offense and DL guru Andre Patterson from the Vikes to coach the defense. He also brings Phil Galiano from New Orleans to coach the special teams.
With over $80M in cap space and a new front office, the Jags are busy. They re-sign Keelan Cole and Cam Robinson. They also bring in Jacoby Brissett to mentor whatever QB they draft. Then they sign CB Troy Hill, TE Gerald Everett, and S Justin Simmons to big deals, addressing three big needs before draft night.
The draft goes swimmingly for Paton and crew. They make the obvious pick of Justin Fields at 2 overall, followed by Kyle Pitts at 26. Jay Tufele is a year removed from the football field, but he's one of the best DT prospects in the class. Kendrick is quietly having a solid year for Clemson, and Ar'Darius Washington falling to 66 is a steal for the Jaguars. They add depth in the later rounds with Dyami Brown, Michael Carter, and Monty Rice.
AFC EAST
BUF
The Bills start the offseason by freeing up cap space. They cut Quinton Jefferson, Lee Smith, and Vernon Butler, creating over $17M in space. They also re-sign Matt Milano to a big deal and restructure WR John Brown. Jonnu Smith comes over in free agency, replacing Tyler Kroft.
The draft sees the Bills add a big time athlete in CB Tyson Campbell. He may not be ready to start on day 1, but Campbell's profile is amazing for the position. They also add Jaelen Phillips in the 2nd and iOL Ben Cleveland in the 3rd, two pieces that should push for time as rookies.
MIA
Miami has built a solid team centered around a stout secondary and an elite special teams unit. While Tua hasn't been perfect, he has flashed the ability to win in the league. The Dolphins need to be stable around him. They bring back Fitzpatrick, Karras, and Haack. In the draft, the Phins are busy. They add local edge rusher Greg Rousseau at 9 overall. Rousseau is an uber talented athlete with lots of positional versatility. Then they come back at 22 and give Tua his old Bama teammate in Jaylen Waddle. I then got a bit aggressive to secure the 5th year option, trading up to 32 for another Bama kid: RB Najee Harris. While others might favor Etienne, Harris is the far superior runner between the tackles and is the most dynamic receiving RB I've ever seen. Chazz Surratt is an upside add in the 2nd, with Cisco not too far behind. Both are super instinctive defenders that should thrive under Flores.
NE
The Patriots are a bit hard to predict. They'll have Hightower, Chubg, LaCosse, and others return after an opt out season. But their big concerns are on offense. I've chosen to re-sign Cam Newton to a mid-level deal ($15M/year) and surround him with players that actually deserve to be on an NFL roster. They retain JC Jackson, James White, Deathrich Wise, Nick Folk, and Jakob Johnson. They also spend big money on Shaq Barrett on defense while reaching a cheap deal with JuJu Smith-Schuster.
In the draft, the Pats build from the ground up. They draft Minnesota's Rashod Bateman in the 1st. He is a big bodied route runner that should work well across from JuJu. Then they add a big run stuffer in Tyler Shelvin before adding depth in the middle of their defense with Moore and Harvell-Peel. Justyn Ross is a risky add medically, but at 134 Billy B is willing to take the chance. When healthy, Ross is a good red zone target.
NYJ
One of the most exciting offseason teams, the Jets are busy this year. Joe Douglas fires Adam Gase after going 0-16 and replaces him with the Titans' Arthur Smith, who adds Chuck Pagano to coach the defense and TJ Weist to work with the special teams. Smith has done incredible work in Nashville, getting top 10 production out of Ryan Tannehill and allowing Derrick Henry to break the game.
The first move of the offseason is to get rid of Darnold. The Colts are kind enough to offer a 3rd rounder for him. The Jets then send a 5th to the Browns for TE David Njoku before re-signing Brian Poole and Marcus Maye. In free agency, JD is eager to spend money. He signs Thuney to play guard, Dupree to rush the passer, Mike Hilton to start in the secondary, and Aaron Jones to take over for Frank Gore.
They don't just sit back in the draft either. After making the obvious pick of Trevor Lawrence at 1 overall, the Jets trade up with Arizona to take Devonta Smith at 15. Some are arguing that Smith is better than even Ja'Marr Chase at the WR position, so despite the depth of the class this is a move that is worth making. They then add another behemoth OT in Daniel Faalele before adding depth on defense.

Recapping 2019
The 2019 season saw the Vikings return to the playoffs to defeat the dirtbag Saints (lol brees) in another walk-off TD before collapsing against the eventual NFC champions. But during the course of the season, the Vikings fielded the most efficient offense they’ve had since 2009. Kirk Cousins, Dalvin Cook, and Stefon Diggs led this team to a top 10 scoring performance with over 2000 yards on the ground and only 8 turnovers in the air. Rookie center Garrett Bradbury struggled in pass protection, but showed clear improvement as the season progressed. The right side of the OL was solidified with veteran Josh Kline, who was a surprisingly good player for us, and 3rd year tackle Brian O’Neill, who I believe took the step into the conversation for best RT in the league.
On defense, Zimmer led yet another top 5 unit. They were 5th in points allowed, forced the 4th most turnovers, and allowed our offense to start possessions with the 5th best field position in the league. Eric Kendricks and Anthony Harris had breakout years, with the former being rated as PFF’s top LB and the latter leading the league in interceptions. Danielle Hunter once again wreaked havoc on offenses, tallying a 14.5 sack line.
However, this team was far from perfect. Vets like Xavier Rhodes and Linval Joseph showed clear signs of aging. Despite long term hope for our OL, our left side was still a major weakness. The 49ers’ DL had their way with Reiff and Elflein in the divisional round. And we were strapped for cash as one of the only teams to enter the offseason in the red. Entering the offseason, the future was cloudy for the Vikings. However, with Kirk Cousins’s extension and the cuts of cap heavy vets like Rhodes, Griffen, and Joseph, it was clear what Spielman’s mission was: use this offseason to retool while extending our championship window with youth and tactical long term deals.

1.22 - WR Justin Jefferson, LSU

Career: 30 Games, 165 Rec, 2415 Yds, 24 TDs
Daniel Jeremiah’s #14 PFF’s #32 Mel Kiper’s #16 Lance Zierlein’s #21
With the dismissal of Stefon Diggs a month before the NFL draft, a strong wideout opposite Adam Thielen was a clear need. In a deep WR class, there was no better time to make such a move. Jefferson might not be as exciting as Henry Ruggs or CeeDee Lamb, but he’s a sound all-around player that should step immediately into the WR2 role in an offense that can be very friendly to young receivers. He was a pivotal piece of the best offense in college history. In just two seasons as the full starter at LSU, Jefferson was able to rack up 2400 yards and 24 scores. He was Joe Burrow’s safety blanket, leading the team with 111 receptions despite stalwarts like Ja’Marr Chase, Thaddeus Moss, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire also commanding targets. He lined up all over the field and is an excellent separator at the break point. He plays bigger than his size and is tough as nails over the middle of the field. His natural hands and savvy route running, along with a surprisingly solid combine, had him widely viewed as the 4th best WR in the draft. That’s probably why so many purple blooded Vikings fans were jumping with joy when the Eagles selected TCU’s Jalen Reagor at 21.
If you were to detract from this pick, you would note Jefferson’s lack of upside. His 4.43 speed does not show up on tape, and a lot of his production at LSU came in the slot against weaker off coverage. With Adam Thielen entering his age 30 season, Jefferson doesn’t really fit the profile of someone that can take over as a dominant force on the outside once the #1 spot is his. You can also discuss the value of taking an earlier wideout in such a deep draft. With the 31st pick, the Vikings still would’ve had their pick between Higgins, Pittman, Shenault, Hamler, and Mims. However, there is no denying the talent, production, and value that can be found in Justin Jefferson. He should step into the offense immediately and be able to produce at a high level as a rookie.

1.31 - CB Jeff Gladney, TCU
5’10” 191lbs 31.875” Arms 9” Hands 4.48 0 17 Bench 37.5 Vert 124 Broad 7.26 3c 47.1% SPARQ

Daniel Jeremiah’s #42 PFF’s #34 Mel Kiper’s #37 Lance Zierlein’s #26
While we meme on the Zim Zam for taking his 1st round corners, it truly was a need this year. With none of our top 3 starters from last season returning, a Day 1 starting corner was arguably our biggest need in the draft. I was quite a fan of this CB class, which I thought was loaded with talent between picks 25 and 80. There were prospects of all shapes, sizes, styles, and talents. but I was never shy about my love for Gladney. While others may not have been as high on him (see: the 5 other CBs taken ahead of him), Gladney is the perfect fit for Coach Zimmer, who prioritizes physical, disciplined corners that excel in multiple schemes.
He isn’t as fluid of an athlete as Henderson or Igbinoghene, but Gladney’s toughness is unmatched. He floods to the ball in the air and closes WRs’ windows early and often. He has good ball skills and loves to get dirty in the run game, as evidenced by his 146 career tackles. He plays like he’s 3 inches taller and 20 lbs heavier.
You can argue the value of Gladney here, as many analysts had him as a better value in the early to mid 2nd round as opposed to the 1st. But I’d argue that that doesn’t account for the scheme fit in Zimmer’s system and the dire need at the position. By all accounts, this was a home run pick for the Vikings, who should have a competent #2 corner to play opposite Hughes.
Grade: A
2.58 - OT Ezra Cleveland, Boise St
6’6” 311lbs 33.375” Arms 9” Hands 4.93 40 30 Bench 30 Vert 111 Broad 7.26 3c 4.46 20shutt 91.7% SPARQ
Daniel Jeremiah’s #53 PFF’s #58 Mel Kiper’s #49 Lance Zierlein’s #68
Cleveland started garnering mainstream attention after he blew up the combine. After taking a look back at his tape, it was clear to me that Cleveland should be in the first round conversation. Despite towering at 6’6”, Cleveland has a low frame with a sound center of gravity. He plays with patience but is quick out of his stance and excellent when he gets to the second level. He’s far from a perfect prospect, as many noted his subpar play strength and inconsistent hand usage in college. However, his athleticism makes him a perfect fit for Gary Kubiak’s zone run scheme, and the presence of veteran Riley Reiff ensures that Cleveland will not be rushed into the tackle spot.
Your grade on this pick depends on your OL rankings and where you might have viewed Cleveland. Some may have had Josh Jones or Lucas Niang higher, but Cleveland being the 8th OT taken wasn’t uncommon amongst mock drafts. Against the consensus, 58 overall seems to be an appropriate spot for him. But there were actually rumors that the Vikings were planning on taking Gladney at 22 and Cleveland at 25 had Jefferson not slipped. This front office was clearly high on Cleveland, and I’m sure they were jumping out of their seats to see him slip to 58 (as were the rest of us Vikings fans).
Grade: A-
3.89 - CB Cameron Dantzler, Mississippi State
6’2” 188lbs 30.625” Arms 9” Hands 4.64 40 34.5 Vert 15.4% SPARQ
Career: 31 Games, 108 Tkls, 5 INTs, 20 PDs
Daniel Jeremiah’s #132 PFF’s #50 Mel Kiper’s #70 Lance Zierlein’s #79
After filling their three major needs in the first two rounds, Spielman and Zimmer were able to play with the board a bit. With 89, the duo decided to tap back into the CB well, grabbing the 11th CB off the board. Similar to Gladney, Dantzler is a hyper-physical, undersized corner that shows a lot of scheme versatility in his tape. He plays with a high motor and is able to attack the ball in the air. His footwork is technically sound, and he does a good job closing windows for WRs. If you’re going to quote Dantzler’s 4.64 40 time at the Combine, I’ll come back with his 4.38 40 time at his Pro Day. His play speed is probably somewhere between those ranges. I’d guess closer to 4.5 than 4.6.
His biggest repeated knock is his weight. There aren’t many NFL corners that stand as tall as he does with as little muscle mass. Perhaps the most successful one this decade has been Dre Kirkpatrick (6’2”, 190lbs). But many believe that his tape is strong enough to overcome that. PFF even said that “if you could guarantee me Dantzler could add 15 pounds of muscle, he’d likely be the second CB on our board.” There isn’t any mistake that Dantzler is a talented asset.
What isn’t there to like about this pick? Well it comes at an opportunity cost. With Gladney already joining Hughes and Hill on the roster, Dantzler slots in as the 4th CB at best as a rookie. This comes when there are still needs at OG and DL to be addressed. Florida DE Jonathan Greenard, Utah S Terrell Burgess, LSU OT Saadhiq Charles, St. John’s OT Ben Bartch, and Clemson S K’Von Wallace are all guys higher on Daniel Jeremiah’s board that would have been able to contribute more as rookies. However, I do believe that Dantzler’s tape justifies his name here. While he may not be able to contribute very much as a rookie, he should solidify our CB group for the next 4 years.
Grade: B+
4.117 - DE DJ Wonnum, South Carolina
6’5” 258lbs 34.125” Arms 10.5” Hands 4.73 40 20 Bench 34.5 Vert 123 Broad 7.25 3c 4.44 20shutt 52.6% SPARQ
Career: 41 Games, 137 Tkls, 29.5 TFLs, 14 Scks, 1 INT, 5 PDs
Daniel Jeremiah’s #146 Mel Kiper’s #118 Lance Zierlein’s #168
If you know anything about the Vikings’ draft method, you know that they love to draft and develop mid to late round defensive linemen. It’s been a tried and true formula for the Purple and Gold, with defensive coordinator Andre Patterson grooming the likes of Everson Griffen, Danielle Hunter, and Ifeadi Odenigbo. That’s why it isn’t surprising to hear Wonnum’s name go in this area of the draft.
While he isn’t the most flexible athlete, Wonnum was a steady presence for the Gamecocks when he was on the field. He’s a high motor player with great length and good upper body strength. He does have a medical flag on his resume, as Wonnum missed most of the 2018 season with an ankle injury. However, he was also voted Comeback Player of the Year and Second Team All-SEC in his 2019 campaign. Expect Wonnum to spend his first year in the weight room and in close contact with Coach Patterson, as Vikings fans are expecting him to be next in the line of great developmental pass rushers.
As for the opportunity cost of this pick, fans can speculate about passing up on players of better value like QB Jacob Eason (DJ’s #64 player), QB Jake Fromm (DJ’s #70), CB Reggie Robinson (DJ’s #84), or CB Amik Robertson (DJ’s #85). However, if the goal was to obtain a developmental edge rusher with this pick, there wasn’t much choice. Wonnum was the best player available at the position, and NFL teams agreed. There wasn’t another edge rusher selected until 30 picks later.
Grade: B
4.130 - DT James Lynch, Baylor
6’4” 289lbs 31.875” Arms 9.875” Hands 5.01 40 23 Bench 29 Vert 111 Broad 7.39 3c 4.39 20shutt 48.3% SPARQ
Career: 33 Games, 100 Tkls, 33 TFLs, 20 Scks, 7 PDs
Daniel Jeremiah’s #89 PFF’s #99 Mel Kiper’s #117 Lance Zierlein’s #77
If you want to talk about upside, there is no better candidate at this point in the draft than Lynch, who offers positional flexibility between a DE in a 3-4 alignment or a pass rushing 3 Tech in a 4-3 base. At a mere 289 lbs, Lynch is a tweener for a DT. However, his production in 2019 was unmatched. The Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year holds the Baylor record in career sacks. He’s a high-octane player, and his coaches at Baylor loved him. He has some natural pass rushing skills, but you do wonder if his lack of size will ultimately hold him back at the next level.
As for his fit on the Vikings, the need is clear. We’ve been unable to find a solid interior pass rusher for over a decade now. We’ve cycled through short-term answers like Sharrif Floyd and Sheldon Richardson, but we haven’t had a long term answer since Kevin Williams retired. And in the meantime, the Vikings have tried again and again at mid to late round rotational players. Vikes fans know what I’m talking about. Here’s the list of rotational DTs that at one point or another we thought would turn into a star for us: Jalyn Holmes, Jaleel Johnson, Shamar Stephen, Hercules Mata’afa, Tom Johnson, Letroy Guion, Armon Watts. Quite frankly, I’m tired of having a shit ton of mediocre rotational guys. If we were going to address DT in the draft, I would’ve loved for it to have been a star.
That said, I also understand the value of the pick. While I don’t think Lynch can beat out guys like Jaleel and Watts for the 3T job, he gives us another lottery ticket for a developmental interior pass rusher.
Grade: C
4.132 - LB Troy Dye, Oregon
6’3” 231lbs 32.25” Arms 9.375” Hands
Career: 48 Games, 391 Tkls, 41.5 TFLs, 13 Scks, 5 INTs, 14 PDs
PFF’s #59 Mel Kiper’s #115 Lance Zierlein’s #103
As I came into the draft, I told everyone that LB was the Vikings’ most stacked position. With Barr and Kendricks playing up to their contracts and Gedeon, Wilson, and Smith off the bench, I didn’t really see any way a rookie could make the team. The only way we’d take a LB in this draft is if there was a massive value at the position. Well they got that.
I personally had a 2nd round grade on Dye (as did some other notorious Vikings fans in this sub). He’s a smart player that can excel in any scheme. He’s got great length and instincts, although his play strength is weaker than you’d want. He’s the only Duck to ever have led the team in tackles for 4 straight years and was a pivotal player in Oregon’s Rose Bowl win. He’s also tough as nails, as he played the latter half of the 2019 season with a club on his hand and still managed to break up 4 passes and pick off 2 balls.
This pick is all about value for me, and I love it. I think Dye can challenge for the 3rd LB spot in base formations. In the meantime, he’ll be an excellent special teams contributor, and his presence in the locker room will be welcomed as the team has lost a lot of veteran leadership over the offseason.

5.169 - CB Harrison Hand, Temple
5’11” 197lbs 31.75” Arms 9.125” Hands 4.52 40 14 Bench 41 Vert 133 Broad 7.15 3c 4.27 20shutt 94.9% SPARQ

Mel Kiper’s #281 Lance Zierlein’s #234
In the 5th round, Spielman selected the 3rd rookie corner, building what looks to be a bright young DB corps for Mike Zimmer to groom to stardom. Yet I can’t help feeling like this is a bit of a luxury pick for a team that can’t quite afford to be taking luxuries. Behind Hughes, Hill, Gladney, Dantzler, and Boyd, Hand will be lucky if he makes the roster. On top of that, very few media members had Hand anywhere near the 169th best player in the draft.
Perhaps this pick could have been used to add depth by finding a true safety or adding more developmental prospects to the OL room. Players like Netane Muti, Michael Onwenu, and Antoine Brooks would have been more likely to make the 53 man roster and challenge for starting or #2 roles.
That’s not to say Hand isn’t talented. The New Jersey native was a stud as a true freshman at Baylor. After transferring to Temple to be with his family, Hand displayed strong competitiveness and discipline in coverage. He played a variety of different coverages and excels in zone. Plus he provides a possible versatility to move to safety. He’s a decent athlete and should have been able to lock on as the 4th CB on most teams. However on the Vikings roster, he’ll have his work cut out for him.
Grade: C
5.176 - WR KJ Osborn, Miami
5’11” 203lbs 31.25“ Arms 9.125” Hands 4.48 40 18 Bench 37.5 Vert 123 Broad 7.00 3c 4.35 20shutt 81.4% SPARQ
Career: 46 Games, 146 Rec, 2037 Yds, 17 TDs
Mel Kiper’s #166 Lance Zierlein’s #339
This pick caught just about everyone by surprise. Not because the Vikings went receiver. Adding a Day 3 guy would’ve surely been a welcome addition to challenge Bisi and Tajae for the #3 and #4 roles. But Osborn was a name that was rather under the radar.
Osborn transferred to Miami from Buffalo following the departure of Tyree Jackson, and it turned out to be a great decision. He was the Canes’ top receiver, leading the team in receptions, yards, and TDs. Osborn also added 456 yards on 26 returns at Miami. He isn’t an oomph player as a ballcarrier, but he’s a fearless returner. As a receiver, the Michigan native excelled in the slot. His speed and quickness are adequate, but aren’t likely to blow anyone away. However, he showed good instincts and spatial awareness and was a consistent player for Miami.
I’m not sure Osborn will make much of an impact on offense any time soon. And the pick looks especially bad when you compare his tape and production to the likes of those drafted after him: Michigan’s Donovan Peoples-Jones, SMU’s James Proche, and Ohio State’s KJ HIll. Osborn’s special teams versatility will give him a shot at making the roster, but there is little doubt that few were expecting his name to be called this early.
Grade: D
6.203 - OT Blake Brandel, Oregon State
6’7” 307lbs
Lance Zierlein’s #428
Thanks to u/rangersapprentice101 for taking the lead on this one.
Blake Brandel was not listed on any of the major top 300 big boards before the draft, leading many to dismiss this pick. Brandel, the argument ran, was a fine player, but didn't have even baseline NFL caliber athleticism. However, a closer examination of the data reveals reason for optimism. Brandel's RAS was 7.21 (on par with Isaiah Wilson and better than recent high picks like Tytus Howard and Michael Deiter) with good size, decent speed, and great explosiveness. The knock was that he didn't have NFL athleticism, which doesn't seem to hold water. The only tangible fault on Brandel athletically turns out to be agility.
Brandel was the #1 Pass blocking OT in the nation according to PFF (93.1 grade), with an overall grade of 90.0. One PFF writer claimed that Brandel's technique was the best in college football. Expect a long career built on nothing more than being a backup tackle that can hold his own in pass pro (ask Dallas how necessary that is after they let Clayborn get 6 sacks). Great value for a 6th round pick.
Grade: B+
6.205 - S Josh Metellus, Michigan
5’11” 209lbs 32.25” Arms 10.25” Hands 4.55 40 20 Bench 36.5 Vert 124 Broad 6.94 3c 4.4 20shutt
Career: 43 Games, 186 Tkls, 9 TFLs, 5 INTs, 14 PDs
Mel Kiper’s #204 Lance Zierlein’s #164
Safety was a clear need for this team coming into the draft. Even if we kept Anthony Harris, his franchise tag only keeps him in purple for one year. Even if Harris worked out a long term deal with the Vikings, a reliable 3rd safety was a need for a team that lost Andrew Sendejo and Jayron Kearse in free agency. Enter: Metellus.
Josh Metellus is a hard hitting downhill safety that also lined up at LB, as a deep safety, and at the interior and outside corner spots. He really hit his stride when he could play the run, with his strong tackling technique and early play recognition. However, he isn’t quite as skilled in coverage. His 4.55 40 isn’t bad, but that sort of play speed isn’t going to help Metellus, who lacks experience in zone coverage and made a lot of mistakes in man coverage.
Despite his woes, Metellus’s strong play mentality and hustle on the field give him a good shot to start the year as our 3rd safety. While I wish this was a position that was addressed earlier in the draft, I can’t tell you that there was a better prospect here.

7.225 - DE Kenny Willekes, Michigan State
6’3” 264lbs 31.25” Arms 9.5” Hands 4.87 40 32 Bench 32.5 Vert 119 Broad 7.39 3c 32.7% SPARQ
Career: 40 Games, 228 Tkls, 49 TFLs, 23.5 Scks, 1 INT, 7 PDs
PFF’s #83 Lance Zierlein’s #238
Diving back into the defensive line box, Spielman chose Kenny Willekes, who was in the first round conversation just last year. Willekes has been highly productive since walking on to the Spartan football squad, racking up 18 sacks at 38 TFLs in the last two seasons alone. What he lacks in athleticism he makes for with instincts and motor. He’s a consistent tackler and is great when he can crash into a gap and avoid engaging a blocker head on. However, he is a low-upside prospect whose most obvious path to success is to become a technician.
So whether or not you like this pick depends on your drafting philosophy. Personally, I believe that picks this late should generally be raw upside athletes. That said, I do believe that Willekes this late in the draft is a great value. And that’s ultimately where I’ll lay my sword. While I doubt he’ll ever be a Pro Bowler or All Pro, Willekes has a good shot to develop into a sufficient 3rd DE for this team.

7.244 - QB Nate Stanley, Iowa
6’4” 235lbs 32.625” Arms 10” Hands 4.81 40 28.5 Vert 108 Broad 7.26 3c 4.48 20shutt 34.2% SPARQ
Career: 44 Games, 1155 Att, 58.3 Comp%, 8297 Yds, 68 TDs, 23 INTs
Mel Kiper’s #286 Lance Zierlein’s #185
Stanley was one of my late round crushes in this draft. He was one of just a handful of college QBs that took snaps from under center, and that helped him mold his footwork to be among the best in the class. He doesn’t have the strongest arm, but he is accurate to all levels of the field. This 3 time Hawkeyes captain has the ideal frame for an NFL QB, and his Combine showed that he’s more than a sitting duck in the pocket.
However, I’d be lying if I thought there was anything to Stanley other than a perennial NFL backup. At this point though, I am more than happy to find a backup of Stanley’s caliber (he only threw 7 picks in 2019). Sean Mannion is fine, but his Week 17 start last year proved to me that we’re royally screwed if Kirk ever goes down. Stanley will at least push Mannion to be better.
Grade: B
7.249 - S Brian Cole II, Mississippi State
6’2” 213lbs 31.375” Arms 10” Hands 4.52 40
Career: 18 Games, 78 Tl;s. 10.5 TFLs, 3 Scks, 2 INTs, 2 PDs
PFF’s #243 Lance Zierlein’s #290
If you were wondering why Spielman was vying so hard for a plethora of late round picks, this is why. Amid pandemics and controversy, Spielman wanted to secure as many late round players as possible to avoid any chaos that might be waiting for him in the UDFA pool. It was Brian Cole who had agreed to a UDFA deal with the Seahawks just minutes before he got a call from the Vikings front office.
Cole is a former 4 star wide receiver recruit and JuCo product that was dismissed from Michigan after logging just one catch his freshman year. He worked his way to a starting gig at Miss St, starting 12 games in 2019 as a safety/linebacker hybrid. He really lacks experience; he only played only 17 games on defense at a high level. As such, he is extremely raw, especially in coverage. He lacks instincts in the passing game, and he’s unable to hold his coverage assignment for too long. He is a strong athlete and a stronger tackler, but he’s likely going to spend his first few years as a special teamer that will need to keep his head in his notebook if he’s going to succeed.
I’m not going to lie and tell you that I have too much of an opinion this late in the draft. Cole is a good athlete that was obviously desired by multiple teams as a prospect. Maybe there were some better prospects available, but the search for a 3rd safety is on and Cole has as good a shot as anyone at this point in the draft.
Grade: B
7.253 - OG Kyle Hinton, Washburn

Mel Kiper’s #289 Lance Zierlein’s #213
This DII prospect lined up at left tackle for Washburn, but he’ll probably move inside for the Vikings. His frame is not ideal for an NFL lineman. Perhaps the most successful active lineman that is close to his frame is the Bucs’ Austin Blythe (6’3”, 298lbs). But Hinton does have an impressive combination of strength and agility. He can be successful getting to the second level of the defense and should be a great fit in Kubiak’s zone run scheme. You do worry about his size and technique, but Hinton has some good fundamentals to succeed as a developmental player for the Vikings.
Again, we can wonder about which better players could have gone with this pick. Washington OT Trey Adams, Nebraska CB Lamar Jackson, and LSU TE Thaddeus Moss are among the notable names that went undrafted that could have ended up in purple. But at the end of the day, I believe that the Vikings got a good developmental player that fits their scheme.

Notable UDFAs
OT Brandon Aiello, Oregon Played 48 games at LT, RT, and RG. He’s patient, explosive off the snap, and plays whistle to whistle.
FB Jake Bargas, UNC Listed as a TE in college, played in 48 games and was a key contributor on special teams. He has 21 career receptions for 189 yards and 2 TDs.
WR Dan Chisena, Penn St 3 receptions for 66 yards in 14 career games. Only played 2 years due to transition from Track and Field. An incredibly fast but raw athlete.
CB Nevelle Clark, UCF 38 starts and 41 career games, where he recorded 108 tackles (7 for loss), 5 picks, and 34 passes defended. He’s got great ball skills and size, and he’s a willing tackler. However, he’s a bit undisciplined which can put him in a bad spot at times.
WR Quartney Davis, Texas A&M Arguably the best UDFA get for the Vikings, Davis compiled a 99/1201/11 statline over the last two years at A&M. He was widely expected to be drafted on the 3rd day of the draft, with many scouts citing his footwork, route running, and change of direction as desirable traits.
S Myles Dorn, UNC In 46 games, Dorn compiled 241 tackles (10.5 for loss), 6 picks, and 21 passes defended for the Tar Heels. Dorn has a natural sense for how to attack plays, reading QBs’ eyes with ease. However, he has athletic limitations and can play overly aggressive at times.
LB Jordan Fehr, App St In 43 career games, Fehr totaled 211 tackles (17.5 for loss), 8 sacks, 7 passes defensed, and 4 turnovers en route to being a two time All-Sun Belt player. Fehr is an athletic freak, posting a 4.45 40, a 40.5” vert, and a max bench press of 415 lbs.
TE Nakia Griffin-Stewart, Pitt A Rutgers transfer, NGS totalled 22 receptions for 282 yards and 2 TDs in 38 games between RU and Pitt.
OG Tyler Higby, Mich St Started 30 games for the Spartans at various spots on the OL (LT, LG, C). His versatility makes him an asset. He’ll likely line up at LG for the Vikings.
C Jake Lacina, Augustana A St. Paul native and the son of a former Viking, Lacina started all 45 games at center for Augustana, which tallied 450 YPG in 2019.
LB Blake Lynch, Baylor A versatile defender, Lynch made 32 starts for Baylor at LB, S, CB, WR, and RB. In 2019, he played exclusively LB, where he totaled 68 tackles and 3.5 sacks.
DT David Moa, Boise St A 6th year player for the Broncos, Moa totalled 90 tackles, 11.5 sacks, and 21.5 TFLs in 46 games. He’s a technical pass rusher with underwhelming length and athleticism.
Projected 53 man roster
QB (2): Kirk Cousins, Sean Mannion
RB (4): Dalvin Cook, Alexander Mattison, Mike Boone, Ameer Abdullah
FB (1): CJ Ham
WR (6): Adam Thielen, Justin Jefferson, Bisi Johnson, KJ Osborn, Tajae Sharpe, Quartney Davis
TE (3): Kyle Rudolph, Irv Smith Jr, Tyler Conklin
OT (4): Riley Reiff, Brian O’Neill, Rashod Hill, Oli Udoh
iOL (5): Garrett Bradbury, Pat Elflein, Ezra Cleveland, Dru Samia, Dakota Dozier
DE (4): Danielle Hunter, Ifeadi Odenigbo, DJ Wonnum, Kenny Willekes
DT (5): Michael Pierce, Jaleel Johnson, Armon Watts, James Lynch, Shamar Stephen
LB (6): Anthony Barr, Eric Kendricks, Troy Dye, Eric Wilson, Ben Gedeon, Cameron Smith
CB (6): Mike Hughes, Jeff Gladney, Holton Hill, Cameron Dantzler, Harrison Hand, Kris Boyd
S (4): Anthony Harris, Harrison Smith, Josh Metellus, Brian Cole
ST (3): Dan Bailey, Britton Colquitt, Austin Cutting
PS (12): QB Nate Stanley, WR Davion Davis, TE Brandon Dillon, CB Nate Meadors, WR Dillon Mitchell, CB Nevelle Clark, OT Blake Brandel, OG Kyle Hinton, S Myles Dorn
2021 Needs:
S - Anthony Harris is an impending free agent. Unless one of Cole or Metellus steps up, this will be a huge hole on our defense. Even if Ant is retained, a long term S3 is a priority.
RB - This depends on what happens with Dalvin Cook’s contract. If Cook isn’t retained, expect us to target a mid-round passing downs RB to pair with Mattison, who is the only RB currently under contract for 2021.
QB - I don’t think we have a competent QB2 on the roster. We're an 8-8 team at best if Kirk goes down.
OG - Assuming Elflein doesn’t come back to his rookie form and Samia stays on the bench, we don’t have a true starter at either OG spot.
EDGE - I’m hopeful for our trio of Odenigbo, Wonnum, and Willekes. But we could use a true stud opposite Hunter.
DT - We still need a true 3T. Unless Lynch or Watts really step up, this should be an early target in FA or the draft.
Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t bring up what is happening in my home state. The death of George Floyd has rocked the Twin Cities. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, your help would be greatly appreciated. The damage is devastating. I live less than half a mile from crucial rioting areas, and many of the stores and restaurants that I frequent are unrecognizable. Here is a list of places to donate. Here's another list. You can research the orgs you give to specifically, but a lot of the money will be used to rebuild the community (many POC owned businesses were severely damaged), feed families in need (as grocery stores have been decimated), and help with protests in general. Anything you give will help rebuild this beautiful community. SKOL!

Making Gay History Podcast - Episode 02 — Wendell Sayers

Episode Notes
Note from Eric Marcus: As you may have noticed in my introduction to this episode, I explain that Wendell Sayers asked me not to use his real name in my book, Making Gay History. To honor his wish I used the name “Paul Phillips.” So why reveal his true identity now? The world has changed so dramatically since the late 1980s for LGBTQ people that I like to think Wendell’s feelings about remaining hidden would have evolved, too, and that he’d have taken pride in who he was, what he risked, and what he accomplished without feeling the need to hide behind a pseudonym. There’s also a part of me that feels the world should know who Wendell was, without the scrim of anonymity, because he was such an extraordinary person. I hope that revealing Wendell’s true identity is the decision he would have made for himself if he were still alive and that by doing so 18 years after his death I’m not causing any harm. At least that’s my hope.
Wendell’s mother was an active member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and other organizations. When his father died in 1956, he left an estate of $115,000, the equivalent of more than a million dollars in 2019. Part of the estate was to be used to acquire suitable places and accommodations where people could find food and lodging without being rejected because of their race.
Wendell was too young to serve in WWI, too old for WWII (although in 1942, at age 37, he registered for the draft).
In 1945 Wendell started his private law practice in Denver. He worked on many civil rights and discrimination cases. In the 1960s he became the first black assistant attorney general for the state of Colorado.
After retiring, Wendell returned to school to get a bachelor’s degree in music performance and theory from the University of Denver—music was his first love. He appeared in multiple volumes of Who’s Who in Black America.
Wendell Sayers died in Denver on March 27, 1998.
Interesting fact: Wendell was the first cousin, once removed, of noted Chicago Bears running back Gale Sayers. (Gale, born 1943, was adopted by Bernice Ross and Roger Sayers, a son of Wendell’s uncle Edward.) In 1967, Gale and his teammate Brian Piccolo became the first interracial roommates on a professional football team. They became close friends until Brian died of cancer in 1970—a story told in Gale’s autobiography I Am Third, which became the inspiration for the classic television film Brian’s Song, starring Billy Dee Williams as Gale and James Caan as Brian.
There’s one interesting—and horrifying—detail we learned just the other day that added to what we already knew about Wendell’s experience of traveling with his mother from Kansas to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in about 1920. Wendell mentions that he and his mother bought bologna and crackers from stores on the road during their drive—they couldn’t eat in restaurants because they were black. It was at an off-Broadway performance of “Marie and Rosetta” (about the celebrated gospel and R&B singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe) that Eric Marcus first heard bologna referred to as “gospel chicken.” When Sister Rosetta was on the road in the South during the 1940s, she and her crew were forced to settle for cold convenience food, including the ubiquitous bologna, because no white people would cook hot food for black people traveling from one place to another.
One other note about Wendell’s story. He mentions that once “diagnosed” at the Mayo Clinic as a homosexual, he was threatened with incarceration. It was “only” a threat, because while homosexual acts were illegal, you could not be arrested simply for being gay.

———
Wendell Sayers was born in Western Kansas on April 29, 1904, and died on March 27, 1998. He was, as he notes in the podcast, the first black attorney to be hired to work in the Colorado state attorney general’s office. Wendell’s specialty was in real estate. In the late 1950s he attended several meetings of the Denver chapter of the Mattachine Society, an early gay rights organization, and briefly attended the Mattachine Society’s sixth annual national convention, which was held in Denver in September 1959.
That’s about all we knew about Wendell, based on what he’d shared in his original 1989 interview for the Making Gay History book and the little we’d found in our research. However, in August 2019, genealogist Michael J. Leclerc was able to fill in a few more gaps for us—and provide a photo of Wendell as well:
Wendell Phillip Sayers was born April 29, 1904 in Nicodemus, Kansas—a town created after the Civil War specifically for ex-slaves. Wendell’s grandparents were all former slaves.
Wendell was the adopted son of William L. Sayers (1872–1956) and Sarah F. Bates (1872–1943). William and Sarah both came from large families; each had nine siblings. Wendell’s birth parents were William’s older brother George and Sarah’s older sister Mary, who had eight children. William and Sarah had been married for almost 10 years without having children of their own; George and Mary gave their youngest son to their childless siblings, who would go on to adopt two more children, both girls.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Wendell attended Washburn College in Topeka, Kansas, where he later also obtained his JD.
Episode Transcript
I’m Eric Marcus and this is the Making Gay History podcast.
This week I want you meet Wendell Sayers. You won’t read about Wendell in any of the history books. Try an online search. And all you’re going to find is the day he was born and the day he died.
You won’t even find his name in my book, because he asked me not to use it. He worried that word might get back to his family that he was gay. So I called him Paul Phillips and didn’t sat where he lived.
The world Wendell grew up in was stacked against him from the day he was born in 1904. He was black, adopted, gay, small-town western Kansas. But he found a way out and against odds built a life. He had a career. And he even found his way in the 1950s to a local chapter of the Mattachine Society. That was one of the first gay rights organizations, which was founded in 1950.
So here’s the scene. I’m in Denver on a bleak winter’s day in a solidly middle class neighborhood of identical houses next door to the old Stapleton Airport, which was still open back then.
So I park my car in front of a well-maintained ranch. Wendell greets me at the door. He’s dressed in pressed gray slacks, crisp white shirt, gray patterned tie, spit-shined black shoes. He’s a solid, handsome man. He could be seventy. He’s really eight-four.
After a quick tour of his tidy living room, Wendell pours us each a glass of water and we sit down at his dining room table. I clip the mic to his tie and set my tape recorder to record.
———
Eric Marcus: Interview with Wendell Sayers, Saturday, January 14, 1989. Location is the home of Wendell Sayers in Denver, Colorado. Interviewer is Eric Marcus. Tape one, side one.
Wendell Sayers: I grew up in a very segregated society, which kept me always aware that I was different.
If anything went wrong in the town, it was always I who did it.
Eric: That’s a lot of pressure.
Wendell: It’s a lot of pressure. And, uh, gradually I discovered that I was different, and I thought I was the only one in the world.
I remember one time when I first discovered that things were not right, I mean sexually, that I wanted to kill myself.
Eric: Do you remember how old you were?
Wendell: I’d say about fifteen then.
Eric: Do you remember what you thought, how you realized you were different?
Wendell: Well, I knew I didn’t care anything about girls. Everybody else was chasing after girls and I couldn’t figure out why. Just didn’t make sense to me and still doesn’t. So…
Eric: So you thought about killing yourself.
Wendell: I thought one time I just didn’t want to go through life this way. And I didn’t know any other way to keep from it. And I was just completely down and out, so to speak. I gave up, practically.
Finally, my dad come to me one day and told me what he had heard. Whether he heard it or how he found it out, somebody must have told him.
Eric: What did your dad hear?
Wendell: He didn’t tell me. He told me things, he told me that he had heard that I was not natural sexually.
He said, “We’ll go up to Mayo Clinic, get your examinations and see if we can find out what causes it, what to do about it.”
So he puts mother and I in the car and we go up to Minnesota. That was back in the days when you couldn’t get a place to stay, couldn’t get a place to eat.
Eric: Because you’re black.
Wendell: Because you’re blacks.
Eric: What did you do?
Wendell: Buy crackers and bologna in the store and take ‘em out and eat ‘em. Stuff like that.
Eric: Where did you sleep?
Wendell: Got a tent. We got one of these ten by twelve tents and we stayed in the tent at night. Take all of that and put it together it’s awfully hard on anybody. I don’t care if he’s white or black or green or yellow.
Eric: Right.
Wendell: That kind of pressure is terrific.
Eric: How old were you then?
Wendell: I was still quite young.
Eric: Were you still in high school?
Wendell: Yes, I think I was still in high school.
Eric: You must have been terrified.
Wendell: I was terrified. They had me in the hospital for… in and out for several days.
Eric: Did they ask you questions?
Wendell: Oh, yes. All kinds of questions. They determined that I was homosexual and that there was nothing they could do about it. And final report from Mayo’s was that according to their state laws that they should report me and have me incarcerated.
Eric: Incarcerated?
Wendell: Yah.
Eric: For what?
Wendell: Because I was different.
Eric: Put in jail?
Wendell: In jail. They said that since I was a client of theirs they would not do that. So we went back home and reported to dad. I might say this, that I was an adopted child. And I often used to wonder as a kid, What will he do when he finds it out? See. Will he put me out or kick me out? Or will he accept me?
My dad was very understanding. I say understanding, I don’t think he actually understood, but he was willing to accept, I should say. So he finally told me, he says, “Well, since they don’t know what to do about it, find you a friend that you can trust. And bring him home. I don’t want you playing around on the streets or out on the country roads ‘cause you never know who’s going to step up behind you, step up on you. Bring him home. What you do in your room is your business.” Because he didn’t want me out on the street.
That helped me a lot. At least I was loved by my father. And, of course, mother, she just idolized me, regardless. They were remarkable people, as I look back. I didn’t think so at the time.
Eric: No one thinks his parents are remarkable at the time.
Wendell: But as I look back I can certainly appreciate them.
Eric: Yeah.
Wendell: Ask me something.
Eric: Okay. There were no organized gay groups when you were first here in Denver.
Wendell: Mattachine was the first organized group I think as far as I know of. And I had a friend that worked down at the depot.
Eric: The depot? What kind of…?
Wendell: The train depot. It’s where the train used to come in. And he was gay. He was going to the meeting one night and asked me if I’d like to go along. I said, “Yes, I’ll go.” So we went into somebody’s home I didn’t know. I went in. There was a group of guys sitting there. I imagine ten or twelve maybe?
I went first place, I’d say, to know or to meet somebody who was like me. I mean gay by that. Okay, that was my primary purpose in going. It developed later, or as time went on, that once I found there were others besides me I was much better able to accept myself.
Eric: Can you elaborate on that at all, what you mean by that?
Wendell: Well, you see, to me I was always a thorn in the flesh to me because I was gay.
Eric: You were your own thorn.
Wendell: I was my own thorn. And this, uh, talking about it and going over experiences together helped me to realize, well, maybe I’m not the only one.
Eric: Were you scared?
Wendell: No, I had nothing to be scared about. No, I think I scared them worse than they scared me.
Eric: Why did you scare them?
Wendell: Well, I was the only black one.
Eric: Oh, and probably they weren’t accustomed to having any contact with blacks.
Wendell: They weren’t accustomed to having any contacts with blacks. So I come in and for once I found somebody else besides me that would say they were gay, see.
Eric: Up until that time no one had said…?
Wendell: I knew a few.
Eric: Right.
Wendell: But I mean, but to have a group. I had never been in that sort of situation before, see. I was completely happy to find somebody because I thought I would be accepted and a part of the crowd. And I was really happy the first meeting I went to. The guys were not friendly.
Eric: They weren’t friendly.
Wendell: But that was alright. They didn’t know me. All they knew was I was a lawyer and they were afraid of me, I think, because I was a lawyer. They were terrified of the law. “What’s this guy doing here?” “Who’s he going to turn in?”
Eric: Were you concerned about your practice when you went to this first meeting?
Wendell: I was concerned about my practice at every meeting I ever went to because I was working for the Attorney General’s office at the time.
Eric: Oh, you must have been really concerned.
Wendell: First black ever up there.
Eric: First black to work for the Attorney General.
Wendell: Yeah.
Eric: In Denver.
Wendell: Had my office right there in the capitol building. So, every time I went to Mattachine I was as scared as the rest of them only I wasn’t scared of the same thing as they was.
Just imagine the Denver Post would come out front page, first black in the Attorney General’s office turns out to be…
Eric: Could throw yourself off the capitol for that one.
Wendell: I sure would. I’d been raised so much as an underdog, I just would have done anything if I could have taken a step higher, see. Regardless of my gayness, I was still somebody.
Eric: Did they ever ask you legal questions?
Wendell: They would ask me… Sometimes I’d volunteer. They’d talk about something. Once in awhile I’d volunteer a little legal information. I was not a hired or paid consultant, just a volunteer. Everything was volunteer back in those days.
I remember one time one boy had got himself caught with a whole lot of nude pictures. And of course they took him down to trial. And before hand, why, I don’t know whether he asked me or the Society asked me or what, but anyhow, I knew the judge. The judge happened to be gay and I happened to know him. So I went down and thought I had made arrangements with the judge to when this case comes up
Eric: You were gutsy. You were nuts!
Wendell: Plumb nuts. As I look back now I was plumb nuts, I can’t deny it. I went down and asked the judge, talked to him personally. I told him this guy was coming in and I wished he’d be as lenient on him as he could.
And damn it, excuse me, when it come time for the trial the judge took that day off.
Eric: He didn’t want anything to do with it.
Wendell: He didn’t want anything to do with it. But I was kind of glad afterwards that I had warned him ahead of time. Because he and I had been good friends. Nothing between us, but just good friends. And I think he knew me and I think I knew him. So he just took that day off when that guy was coming.
Eric: So you advised on a number of cases like that then?
Wendell: That’s the only one.
Eric: The only one.
Wendell: I think that was the only one.
Eric: But you stuck your neck out. That was way out.
Wendell: That was way out. It’s a wonder somebody didn’t chop it off. It’s a wonder somebody didn’t chop it off.
Eric: You must feel like God’s been watching over you pretty carefully.
Wendell: God’s watched over me, I’m telling you, ever since the day I was born. Yes, sir. Definitely.
———
I’ll never forget saying goodbye to Wendell on the front steps of his house. There was something he wanted to ask me and the question came as a surprise. He said, “Do you think it’s too late for me to meet someone?”
I knew from spending a few hours with Wendell how lonely he was, so I didn’t tell him what I really thought. So I said that I thought it was never too late. There was always the hope of meeting someone.
But of course I didn’t believe it. Wendell was so isolated and fearful of people knowing he was gay that the odds of him meeting anyone were slim to none.
We never spoke again. But I think of Wendell often and the life he might have had if he had been born in 1958, the year I was born, instead of 1904.
Wendell was 93 when he died. I hope he wasn’t alone.

2020.03.01 16:05 Socc13r37 How would 2019 have been affected if the Marvel Cinematic Universe was real: A surface look into halving the talent of the MLB

WARNING: There are spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame in this post. Please be mindful of this if you wish to see these films and also do not wish to be spoiled. These spoilers are not tagged.

So it's thankfully still the offseason, and with less than a month to go until spring training, I had a bunch of posts planned to make during this time, ranging from kind of interesting (The best teams via all kinds of advanced sabermetrics) to just batshit insane (What would it be like if everyone played without a bat?) Of course, there'd be very different outcomes in all of this, so I figured - there's too much talent in the major leagues. Good teams are way too good, and bad teams are way too bad. So, Thanos has seen to balancing the universe, and on Opening Day, 2019, he snaps his fingers, and half of the universe is wiped out - and with it, half the players in Major League Baseball.

Phase 1: The Ruleset

  1. Export all data from 2019 Fangraphs into a Google Doc.
  2. Run a random number between 1 and 2. If 1, player survives. If 2, player is "snapped" and does not play in MLB.
  3. Do whatever the hell you want with the dataset.

Phase 2: The Fallen

According to the data I found, 1410 MLB players appeared in a game. Wiping out half the universe does not wipe out exactly half of Major League Baseball - instead of being 705 players that got snapped, it was 725. We'll be going through each team to determine the survivors and the fallen, starting with the AL East's Baltimore Orioles.
Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles were pretty bad last season. They will be even worse now, with the loss of second baseman Jonathan Villar and outfielder Trey Mancini, but hey, they only lost 2 players with an oWAR over 1! ...they only had 3 players with that. Hanser Alberto is now the star of the squad, supplemented by still having 2 catchers in Chance Sisco and Pedro Severino, and someone who's clearly going to have a resurgent 2020 in Chris Davis. But here, he's still going to be as useful as Hawkeye, in pretty much every way.
Other notable losses: John Means, Alex Cobb, Anthony Santander, Austin Hays, Asher Wojciechowski, Stevie Wilkerson, Paul Fry
Boston Red Sox
Good news, Red Sox fans! You don't get to suffer through having to trade your best player to cut costs in Mookie Betts, because he's been snapped! So has Rafael Devers and Xander Bogaerts, meaning the Red Sox lose their top 3 oWAR players. They do retain JD Martinez, Jackie Bradley Jr., and hopefully Brock Holt, so who knows, maybe they have something they can work with.
Other notable losses: Andrew Benintendi, David Price, Rick Porcello, Nathan Eovaldi, Mitch Moreland, Ryan Brasier, Matt Barnes
New York Yankees
This one is probably the one I was most intrigued by. The Yankees lost a lot of players to injuries, so they had a plethora of players that could have been dusted away, but they seemed to be affected pretty evenly. They lost their power hitting outfielders in Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, plus relievers Jonathan Holder, Chad Green, Tommy Kahnle and Aroldis Chapman. Despite this, they're only 1 short (well, 2 short now) of a 26-man roster. Because the Yankees are still an evil empire, even now.
Other notable losses: CC Sabathia, Masahiro Tanaka, Didi Gregorius, Gleyber Torres, Luis Severino, Greg Bird, James Paxton
Tampa Bay Rays
This was the point where I got pretty sad about the losses that they suffered. They lost 60% of the players in the snap, including almost all of their infielders. They could have barely fielded a starting lineup, but still held onto their "long relievers" Ryan Yarbrough and Yonny Chirinos, as well as Tommy Pham and Blake Snell. However, they still lost a plethora of relievers, as well as Willy Adames, Avisail Garcia and Yandy Diaz, plus Diego Castillo and Charlie Morton. They need a hero, and it's not one of those latter five.
Other notable losses: Joey Wendle, Mike Zunino, Brendan McKay, Chaz Roe, Jose Alverado, Colin Poche, Emilio Pagan
Toronto Blue Jays
The average Blue Jays fan would probably give the Limmy-esque reaction of "Fuck! ...I'm okay." to this. They did lose Cavan Biggio from their primary infield trifecta of "sons of MLB", but held onto Vladdy, Bo plus Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Justin Smoak. Their outfield crumbled though, with the loss of Randal Grichuk, Teoscar Hernandez and...some other guys that are probably in the notable losses. Perhaps this is a good time to merge with Tampa and become Montreal...?
Other notable losses: Danny Jansen, Jonathan Davis, Ken Giles, Derek Law, Rowdy Tellez, Reese McGuire, Billy McKinney
Chicago White Sox
You guys came out of this relatively unscathed! You hold onto Tim Anderson, Yoan Moncada, Jose Abreu, Eloy Jimenez and Yolmer Sanchez! Not to mention Lucas Giolito, Ivan Nova, and almost all of your starting rotation! You're moving up in the world! My 7 notable losses isn't that long, but you did still lose James McCann, but - he was the only real "positive player" you lost offensively.
Other notable losses: Alex Colome, Jace Fry, Aaron Bummer, Kelvin Herrera, Welington Castillo, Daniel Palka, Josh Osich
Cleveland Indians
You guys only have one truly superstar player in Francisco Lindo--and he's snapped. Well, the good news is you still kept a decent hitting core around - Carlos Santana, Jose Ramirez, gold glover Roberto Perez, and the man as old as time Oliver Perez. Seriously, dude still had a solid season at age 37, it's insane. But aside from that, your team is pretty gutted, not in quantity, but by quality.
Other notable losses: Mike Clevinger, Shane Bieber, Jordan Luplow, Tyler Naquin, Carlos Carrasco, Brad Hand, Adam Cimber
Detroit Tigers
You guys only care about Boyd and Cabrera pretty much, right? Well, Cabrera survived, Boyd did not. You're still screwed.
Other notable losses: Niko Goodrum, JaCoby Jones, Jordan Zimmermann, Victor Reyes, Ronny Rodriguez, Christin Stewart, John Hicks
Kansas City Royals
This is around the time where I'm starting to lose energy in my hands while writing, and there's still so much more to do. But uh...yeah, the results aren't good. No Soler, no Merrifield, no Mondesi, no Alex Gordon. Ouch. The best player you have left is...Terrance Gore, what the f--
Other notable losses: Hunter Dozier, Wily Peralta, Meibrys Viloria, Ryan O'Hearn, Brad Boxberger, Brett Phillips, Cam Gallagher
Minnesota Twins
Shockingly, the Bomba Squad loses very little of its power hitters. Mitch Garver is gone and so are the BABIP gods of Luis Arraez and LA TORTUGA, but aside from that, the only real big losses were Jose Berrios and Trevor May. So you still have Cruz, Sano, Polanco, Rosario, Kepler and Gonza--and it's at this point where I realise you only have Kyle Gibson and Jake Odorizzi for pitchers, oh fuck.
Other notable losses: Martin Perez, Jake Cave, Ryne Harper, Taylor Rogers, Tyler Duffey, Brusdar Graterol, Randy Dobnak
Houston Astros
The biggest scalp of the snap is arguably claimed here - Alex Bregman, turned into triangles. The bullpen is also wiped out, with Ryan Pressly, Roberto Osuna and Chris Devenski also gone. George Springer is kept, as is Yordan Alvarez, Jose Altuve, Robinson Chirinos and Josh Reddick, plus Gerrit Cole, so there's still a team you could make of this!
Other notable losses: Justin Verlander, Yuli Gurriel, Carlos Correa, Michael Brantley, Myles Straw, Josh James, Brad Peacock
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Mike Trout survives, as does a good amount of the good core in David Fletcher, Shohei Ohtani and Andrelton Simmons. Tyler Skaggs is still around, too, which is nice...but also kind of awkward. With Albert Pujols, Griffin Canning and Luis Rengifo still around, the team looks like it has a shot at actually winning the division now! ...hopefully. Jo Adell didn't get any playing time, so he is exempted.
Other notable losses: Kole Calhoun, Tommy La Stella, Hansel Robles, Cam Bedrosian, Justin Upton, Kevan Smith, Brian Goodwin
Oakland Athletics
LocksTheFox will be happy about this one. Semien, Puk, Jesus Lizard, Laureano, Chapman, Canha, Olson, Pinder, Grossman and Wendelken all stick around. They were hit pretty evenly by the snap, but they seem like they have the tools to still challenge, even with hits to Liam Hendriks and Yusmeiro Petit in their bullpen.
Other notable losses: Stephen Piscotty, Jurickson Profar, Sean Murphy, Joakim Soria, Mike Fiers, Lou Trivino, Khris Davis
Seattle Mariners
Ichiro's gone. King Felix is gone. Kikuchi is gone. Dee Gordon is gone. Wade LeBlanc is gone. Omar Narvaez is gone. There is no hope. There is no God. There is only more trades to be had.
Other notable losses: Austin Nola, Kyle Seager, Domingo Santana, Marco Gonzales, JP Crawford, Kyle Lewis, Connor Sadzeck
Texas Rangers
Probably one of the most unaffected teams. They didn't lose Joey Gallo, Hunter Pence, Danny Santana, Lance Lynn, Mike Minor...in fact, 5 in 8 Rangers survived, and I believe lead in survivor counts with a whopping 30.
Other notable losses: Delino DeShields, Logan Forsythe, Brett Martin, Willie Calhoun, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Shawn Kelley, Ariel Jurado
It was around this time that I realised the way I was filtering my players meant that players who were on multiple teams weren't being counted in my recaps. So, with that, I present a long list of the players that faded away as a result of this experiment that played for multiple teams in 2019. If you would like to jump to the next bit, it'll be the Atlanta side. Do their team name.
Edwin Encarnacion, Freddy Galvis, Brad Miller, Corey Dickerson, Cesar Puello, Franmil Reyes, Martin Maldonado, Adeiny Hechavarria, Dustin Garneau, Alex Dickerson, Billy Hamilton, Tyler Austin, John Ryan Murphy, Mauricio Dubon, Breyvic Valera, Zack Godley, Kristopher Negron, Francisco Cervelli, Homer Bailey, Trevor Bauer, Wilmer Font, Brad Brach, Phil Maton, Wes Parsons, Matt Magill, Hector Santiago, Mark Melancon, Jake Diekman, Daniel Hudson, Jonny Venters, Austin Adams, Neil Ramirez, Hunter Strickland, Cory Gearrin, Zac Rosscup, Sam Dyson, Chris Martin, Jacob Barnes, Mike Wright Jr., Adalberto Mejia, Joe Biagini, Mike Morin, Carl Edwards Jr., Josh D. Smith, Ray Black, Williams Jerez, Ryan Eades, Hunter Wood, Ryne Stanek, Ian Gibaut, Peter Fairbanks, Mike Montgomery, Austin Adams, Jimmy Cordero, Matt Wisler, Randy Rosario, Blake Parker, Burch Smith, Aaron Sanchez, Brad Wieck, Donnie Hart, Edwin Jackson, Andrew Cashner, Trevor Richards, Chris Stratton, Derek Holland, Joey Rickard, Jose Pirela, Zac Gallen, Jesus Aguilar, Gerardo Parra, Jordan Lyles, Drew Smyly, Drew Pomeranz, Kevin Gausman, Max Stassi, Kean Wong, Blake Swihart, Scooter Gennett, Jonathan Lucroy, Mac Williamson, Jose Rondon, Jedd Gyorko, Chris Owings, Kendrys Morales, Aaron Altherr, Yonder Alonso.
That was sad. Let's keep it sad.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves keep Mike Soroka, Ronald Acuna Jr. and Josh Donaldson as really good players. Among the good players as well is Max Fried, Tyler Flowers, Matt Joyce and Ender Inciarte, but with it comes sacrifice. Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies, Dansby Swanson, Dallas Keuchel and Mike Foltynewicz. A small price to pay for power...
Other notable losses: Brian McCann, Nick Markakis, Charlie Culberson, Julio Teheran, Luke Jackson, Austin Riley, Johan Camargo
Miami Marlins
You still have to deal with Lewis Brinson, but on the plus side, Starlin Castro, Miguel Rojas, Sandy Alcantara and Caleb Smith are still around! Take what you can get, I suppose?
Other notable losses: Brian Anderson, Jorge Alfaro, Magneuris Sierra, Neil Walker, Brian Moran, Adam Conley, Jordan Yamamoto
New York Mets
As someone who knows several Mets fans who overhype the team to hell and back, and a few good ones, I must admit there is a level of schadenfreude to this one. Alonso? Gone. Thor? Snapped this time around. deGrom? deGone. Jeff McNeil? Gone. Your best player now is Michael Conforto. Meet the Mets, meet the Mets, step right up and yeet the Mets!
Other notable losses: Todd Frazier, Steven Matz, Jeurys Familia, Zack Wheeler, Amed Rosario, Justin Wilson, Jed Lowrie
Philadelphia Phillies
Harper still gets paid his big-time deal, and you also still get to have Andrew McCutchen. Aside from that? Prospects are grim. Aaron Nola, JT Realmuto, Hector Neris, and Rhys Hoskins, among others, all turned to dust.
Other notable losses: Cesar Hernandez, Jean Segura, Sean Rodriguez, Vince Velasquez, Seranthony Dominguez, Jose Alvarez, Juan Nicasio
Washington Nationals
If you've been paying attention to the names thus far, and to be honest, if you haven't I don't blame you, then you'd know Daniel Hudson got snapped as part of the multi-team fading. And the Nationals' pitching staff looks even weaker now, with the loss of Stephen Strasburg, Max Scherzer, Anibal Sanchez and Sean Doolittle. Yeesh. The core of Turner, Rendon and Soto sticks around, though, so there is still at least decent hitting in there.
Other notable losses: Matt Adams, Wander Suero, Howie Kendrick, Victor Robles, Adam Eaton, Kurt Suzuki, Matt Grace
Chicago Cubs
Kyle Hendricks and Yu Darvish are still around, and so is Bryant, Contreras, Schwarber, Ian Happ and the legendary Ben Zobrist. Our starting pitching looks good with retaining Hamels, too, but otherwise...eek. No Javy Baez, no Anthony Rizzo, and no David Bote and no Craig Kimb--actually, is losing him that bad? Probably not.
Other notable losses: Jason Heyward, Addison Russell, Pedro Strop, Jose Quintana, Jon Lester, Nico Hoerner, Kyle Ryan
Cincinnati Reds
My one wish with this side was met - Michael Lorenzen survived. If I had another, it's that he would choke me like a Kyle Crick save situation. Joey Votto, however, does not maintain his eye, Amir Garrett doesn't throw hands and Sonny Gray doesn't get his comeback year. They're still in good shape otherwise, though, with Luis Castillo, Eugenio Suarez and Derek Dietrich still around (Is Dietrich still good? I like him.)
Other notable losses: Aristides Aquino, Jose Iglesias, Jose Peraza, Raisel Iglesias, Phillip Ervin, Nick Senzel, Anthony DeSclafani
Milwaukee Brewers
I also know many Brewers fans, and this one will hit hard - they lose Christian Yelich. They also lose Josh Hader, Keston Hiura and Lorenzo Cain, so there's a lot of hurt right about now. You also lost 2 of your presidents 3 of your sausages, so now it's just Brat and Chorizo. Yes, even the costumes got snapped.
Other notable losses: Mike Moustakas, Ryan Braun, Eric Thames, Trent Grisham, Jeremy Jeffress, Brent Suter, Freddy Peralta
Pittsburgh Pirates
You still have Josh Bell, but you also still have Chris Archer and the bad man. I'd say these losses aren't great either.
Other notable losses: Bryan Reynolds, Starling Marte, Adam Frazier, Jameson Taillon, Michael Feliz, Keone Kela, Richard Rodriguez
St. Louis Cardinals
It just hit midnight where I am writing this, so it's fitting. However, this is not a good look for the Cards, as they lose Paul Goldschmidt, Jack Flaherty and Giovanny Gallegos, who I think are some of the best at their position, plus most of their outfield in Jose Martinez, Harrison Bader, Marcell Ozuna and Tommy Edman. At least Kolten Wong sticks around - despite having a pretty strong dislike for the Cardinals, he's one of my favourite players because of how damn good he is at playing second base. That glove tap double play, those underhand throws on the run...good lord.
Other notable losses: Paul DeJong, Adam Wainwright, Matt Carpenter, Tyler O'Neill, Andrew Miller, John Gant, Jordan Hicks
Arizona Diamondbacks
On paper, the losses don't look that bad. Ketel Marte is now a top 5 hitter in the MLB, you keep the HBP god Tim Locastro, with Carson Kelly and Eduardo Escobar sticking around, too. It's a decent spot the sneks find themselves in, even with losing Nick Ahmed and Andrew Chafin.
Other notable losses: Christian Walker, Alex Avila, Yoan Lopez, Jake Lamb, Robbie Ray, Matt Andriese, Adam Jones
Colorado Rockies
You keep Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story. I barely know anyone else on this roster besides the legendary Pat Valaika, so forgive me if I miss some key names.
Other notable losses: Charlie Blackmon, Daniel Murphy, Ian Desmond, Jon Gray, German Marquez, Chris Iannetta, Carlos Estevez
Los Angeles Dodgers
The star power of this lineup is hit very, very hard. Clayton Kershaw and Cody Bellinger both fall victim, but they still keep Hyun-Jin Ryu, Walker Buehler and Max Muncy, so the Dodgers may still be in contention yet. Still some hefty losses, though, with Bellinger being the 3rd-most valuable player hurt by the snap.
Other notable losses: Justin Turner, Corey Seager, Alex Verdugo, Enrique Hernandez, Pedro Baez, Yimi Garcia, Dustin May
San Diego Padres
Their casualty list is 28 players long. Dear lord. Tatis, Machado and Yates all survive, but you lost more than 60% of your players. So maybe this team has...kind of a chance, since they may be running on fumes, but they have a decent base? Like, their biggest losses on both sides are Chris Paddack and Manuel Margot, that's not that bad.
Other notable losses: Austin Hedges, Francisco Mejia, Trey Wingenter, Craig Stammen, Robbie Erlin, Ian Kinsler, Joey Lucchesi
San Francisco Giants
Compared to the Padres, they got off very lightly in different ways. They lose Yastrzemski, Posey, Belt and Will Smith, while keeping 23 of their 41 one-team-in-2019 players, including Evan Longoria and Madison Bumgarner.
Other notable losses: Pablo Sandoval, Fernando Abad, Trevor Gott, Tyler Beede, Sam Coonrod, Dereck Rodriguez, Johnny Cueto

Phase 3: The Evaluation

Using fWAR, I decided to see how much more balanced these teams got in comparison to where they were at previously. I figured that this was the best way to see how they panned out. Note that I did make some changes - every player that survived still ends on the team that they finished 2019 on, e.g. Edwin Encarnacion gets credited for the Yankees, Zack Greinke gets credited for the Astros, etc. It's not a be-all end-all evaluation, since I'm quite lazy and only rate based on offensive value, but...I don't have any kind of credible defense for it, it's just the way I wanted to do things, but it does keep things even on the offensive end - if I had more energy and time, I'd likely run the pitching simulation, but I don't, it is what it is. I'm happy to share the data on this so you can run your own things. The teams will be ranked as a percentage of oWAR that they retained, or if a percentage can't be obtained (positive to negative), then they are ranked by how much they lost.
  1. Detroit Tigers (+54%, +1.2)
  2. Chicago White Sox (+37%, +4.1)
  3. Colorado Rockies (+8%, +0.8)
  4. Oakland Athletics (-0.7%, -0.2)
  5. Texas Rangers (-11%, -1)
  6. Tampa Bay Rays (-22%, -5.1)
  7. Washington Nationals (-25.4%, -6.6)
  8. Arizona Diamondbacks (-25.6%, -6)
  9. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (-26%, -5.3)
  10. Cleveland Indians (-29%, -5.8)
  11. Minnesota Twins (-32%, -10)
  12. San Diego Padres (-35%, -4.7)
  13. Cincinnati Reds (-36%, -4)
  14. Chicago Cubs (-41%, -10.2)
  15. New York Yankees (-41.6%, -13.6)
  16. San Francisco Giants (-43.0%, -4.3)
  17. Atlanta Braves (-43.1%, -11.6)
  18. Houston Astros (-49%, -20.1)
  19. Los Angeles Dodgers (-55%, -19.1)
  20. Philadelphia Phillies (-57%, -11.8)
  21. Seattle Mariners (-58%, -9.6)
  22. New York Mets (-59%, -13.9)
  23. Pittsburgh Pirates (-69.7%, -7.6)
  24. Milwaukee Brewers (-69.8%, -16.9)
  25. Boston Red Sox (-73%, -20)
  26. St. Louis Cardinals (-74%, -16.5)
  27. Toronto Blue Jays (-83%, -9.5)
  28. Miami Marlins (N/A, -3.5)
  29. Baltimore Orioles (N/A, -6.9)
  30. Kansas City Royals (N/A, -11.2)
And all the teams, ranked by their current oWAR;
  1. Oakland Athletics (28.3)
  2. Minnesota Twins (21)
  3. Houston Astros (20.7)
  4. Washington Nationals (19.4)
  5. New York Yankees (19.1)
  6. Tampa Bay Rays (17.9)
  7. Arizona Diamondbacks (17.4)
  8. Los Angeles Dodgers (15.7)
  9. Atlanta Braves (15.3)
  10. Chicago White Sox (15.1)
  11. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (15)
  12. Chicago Cubs (14.7)
  13. Cleveland Indians (13.9)
  14. Colorado Rockies (10.9)
  15. New York Mets (9.6)
  16. Philadelphia Phillies (9)
  17. San Diego Padres (8.7)
  18. Texas Rangers (8.2)
  19. Boston Red Sox (7.5)
  20. Milwaukee Brewers (7.3)
  21. Cincinnati Reds (7.1)
  22. Seattle Mariners (6.8)
  23. St. Louis Cardinals (5.8)
  24. San Francisco Giants (5.7)
  25. Pittsburgh Pirates (3.3)
  26. Toronto Blue Jays (2)
  27. Baltimore Orioles (-0.5)
  28. Miami Marlins (-0.9)
  29. Detroit Tigers (-1.2)
  30. Kansas City Royals (-1.9)

Phase 4: What Now?

So there's a lot that could be done with this information. Could there be possible team mergers to keep up the level of competition? You could run OOTP sims to see how these players do, whether they're playing in the snapped area or playing in the real world. Maybe this is how you designate new leagues? Or you can do the work I don't have the chance of doing and see what the pitching evaluation looks like. There's 14,000,605 possibilities - this is just one of them.
If you'd want to run this yourself, here's the sheet to show who lived and who died, in case I didn't mention your favourite player and you wanted to see their fate, or want to play around with the data yourself. (Note that the random doesn't work in this sheet, since it messes up data too much - if you want to, replace all the values from W2 to W1411 with =RANDBETWEEN(1,2)and you can run your own snap.)
TL;DR (tldr) If Thanos's snap was discriminate and affected the 2019 season, it'd go after the Kansas City Royals, and favour the Oakland Athletics. The A's would be the best offensive team in baseball, and the Royals the worst offensive team, with pitching indeterminate.

2020.01.20 20:45 thisisnotdetroit Some MLK Notes about the 2020 Minnesota Vikings

Hey y'all. Day off today and my newborn is sleeping so I wanted to start some jargon about a few players and some things I think need to improve going into 2020:
  1. For the Vikes to have better offensive success this year, we have to see Bradbury take a BIG step. Erik McCoy, Connor McGovern and Elgton Jenkins (moved to guard) all outplayed him by a pretty big margin in 2019. I'm not sure if it's his size or technique, but his pass protection was awful. Granted (and this will lead into my next point) it could have been the awful play of Pat Elflein that lead to some of his errors.
  2. Pat Elflein's year 3 was another let down. The dude is athletic; I get that. But I think after 3 years it's just time to say his experiment is over. The Vikes HAVE to bring in some LG competition whether it be through FA or the draft. I personally think we should address this in the draft, as we are going to need to prepare to pay Brian O'Neill and I think Joe Thuney and Scherff are going to be drastically overpaid. Dru Samia is also waiting in the wings, and I'd still love to see what Brett Jones could offer.
  3. Restructure Reiff but don't cut him. I think he could provide good value sticking at LT or switching with O'Neill. Conklin is going to be overpaid too and although he's a solid run blocking OT we need better pass protectors. (I think Tennessee opts to keep him, too)
  4. Josh Kline, meh. He is what he is. Honestly I hope Samia or a new draft pick surpasses him on the depth chart.
  5. Brian O'Neill - stud. Get ready to make this guy a Viking for life.
  6. Running backs + FB - keep the same next year minus Abdullah. Kinda bummed Roc Thomas didn't work out. Don't extend Dalvin Cook.
  7. Excited to see Kyle and Irv again next year. If Irv can take a big leap, this would be HUGE for an offense like we ran last year.
  8. Diggs and Thielen should have another productive year. It'd be great to pick up a Vet FA to provide some depth. The games where Adam was hurt cost us a lot this year. Chiefs and Seahawks, if we could have flipped those, there's a good shot we get a 1-2 seed.
  9. Griffen - keep this guy! Give him a reasonable deal and bring him back for depth and maybe some 3tech action. He's wants to stay a Viking, so I think he doesn't break the bank.
  10. Start Danielle Hunter on the right side. Next year will be the year this guy takes over the league IMO. We need to build the defense around him just like we did Griffen 4 years ago.
  11. Draft a DI in the 1st or second round to replace either ShamaJoseph. I'd love to see us make a run for either DJ Reader or Javon Hargrave in FA, as well. I think Shamar and Joseph are both gone. Excited to see what Armon Watts has to offer.
  12. Anthony Barr. Barr is first round talent that I don't think we have used to his full ability. I'd love to see him take a Dee Ford/Frank Clark role next year and just harass the passer. he SUCKS in pass coverage. If we don't take a trench guy this year in the first few rounds, I think I'd like to see us make a run at a top tier LB who can cover.
  13. I honestly have no idea what we will do with the other LB spot. Gedeon, Wilson and Cam Smith are all mysteries. Feel free to chime in.
  14. Starting corners - Holton Hill, Mike Hughes and Trae Waynes. Alexander wants out, you can feel it. Trae hopefully won't cost too much but we need either him or Mack to stay. Xavier, you've been dope but it's time to move on.
  15. Safeties - this is TOUGH. Ant Harris had an awesome year, but I just don't know where we get the money to pay him. He's gonna get 12-14 mil a year at age 29. Eek. Might be best to franchise tag him? It's gonna be an interesting offseason player to follow. If we do pay him, I have a feeling it's going to come out of Harry's pocket - and that might lead to a weird dynamic.
  16. Bailey and Colquitt - bring them back.
  17. Extend Kirk 3-5 years. Would love to see us draft a QB soon, too. But don't reach! I think a 2-4 round QB (Dak Prescott/Russell Wilson situation) for the Vikings over the next 5 years is just what we need, but Kirk is still solid. But this probably isn't the year for that. I think Kirk took big steps this year, and that was great to see. The Philly, Dallas and New Orleans wins were big time. Work with him on getting the ball out a tad faster and maybe becoming bit more mobile. (I still think if he ran for that 1st down in the SF game, it would have been a WHOLE different outcome) but what do I know?
I think with Kirk, Griffen, Reiff and Smith restructures we should be able to muster up 30-40 mil of cap room, but I'm not too savvy with that stuff. Would love any input. Also, VERY excited for the draft next year. I think we had an awesome draft last year and if we can get 8-10 picks, we should definitely be able to have 3-4 players we can plug in immediately. I also loved what we did in FA last year. Nothing splashy, wait for the chips to lay and see what comes out. Dozier and Kline were solid pickups and they were cheap. Keep building through the draft.
In short: Need BIG improvement from Bradbury. Move Barr to a Pass Rusher. Draft and FA in the trenches. Extend Kirk, but nothing crazy.

2019.09.18 02:41 the_fuzzy_stoner A "Fun" Semi-Analysis Of Our Last Drafts. Or How I learned To Hate Being a jets fan.

Hello friends.
I'm none too happy about the Jets right now so I figured I would make myself more miserable and do a semi-in-depth analysis of our previous 7 drafts. Why 7? Because that's the Idzik-Maccagnan error, um, era.
Yes, the Tanny era ended pretty abruptly with some serious "fun" but that was 8 years ago and we likely could have undergone two full rebuilds in that time span. So we wont talk about those drafts. They're too long ago and, honestly, we moved on from Tanny specifically because he couldn't build a team after those back-to-back AFCCGs.
Here I'll be showing you all just how unbelievably pathetic the last seven drafts have been.
You aren't ready for this. Really.
Total number of picks-- 53
Yes, an entire roster worth of picks over the last 7 drafts, including big hauls of 12 picks in 2014 (shudders, more on that specific draft in a bit) and nine in 2017. We picked inside the top 50 just 12 times despite having a record of 36-60 (.375) in that span. That's not counting the famous 51st pick in the 2016 draft. So, despite having a record on par with teams picking in the very top of most rounds, we picked in the top 50 fewer than 2x a year while definitely not being a top 14 team most years. The 14th ranked team would normally pick 18th and 50th overall, btw. So a vast, vast, vaaaast majority of those 53 picks have been late round fliers at best. But that's beside the point, even with how poor our draft position was, most teams could find serious depth over 7 years and 53 picks, no? I mean, that's over seven picks per draft.
Number of Players Who Were Off The Team After Three Seasons-- 23/32 Eligible Players
Obviously this number cant be finalized for a while. Only players taken in the 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 NFL drafts could stay more than three years. Why three years? Well, every rookie gets a four year deal when drafted. So basically, if they didn't last more than three years, they didn't finish their first NFL deal. Which means they blow or were dealt. I am counting Peake and Lee in these numbers as they did not play for the Jets this season, which would have been their 4th. Lac, Shell, and Jenkins officially made the cut. The 2017 is the next draft eligible for the three year mark. So far, only Adams and Maye are on the team (lol). If both play with us next year, the tally for 2013-2017 will be 25/41.
Number of Jets picks since 2013 who didn't play a single snap for the Jets-- 9
Hahahhahaha, wow. So. This number includes Hack, Polite, and Blessuan (sorry, not a believer). But also has at least one player in every draft since 2013 except the 2017 and 2018 drafts. 2017 was close with Clark and Jones playing a combined 3 games for the Jets. Remember great picks like 2013 6th rounder William Campbell, 2015 5th rounder Jarvis Harrison, 2014 4th rounder Shaq Evans, 2014 5th rounder Jeremiah George..... 2014 6th rounder Brandon Dixon.... and 2014 7th rounder Tajh Boyd? Yeah. No one does.
Speaking of 2014, that special draft featured the Idzik 12. Despite some legitimate Hall of Famers and All Pros going picks 4-17 that year, namely Khalil Mack, Mike Evans, OBJ, Aaron Donald, Zack Martin; Idzik sat on 12 picks and waited for the Louisville Slugger, Calvin Pryor. All in all that 2014 draft would combine for 289 career games played (24 per player, or 1.5 seasons), 7 TDs, 161 receptions (1.7 TDs, 40 rec per WR,. It's literally 42 rec, 2 TDs total without Quincy), 3 interceptions, and 1 sack. Now those are career numbers. Not necessarily Jets careers. So why don't we look at Jets careers, shall we?
QBs Drafted-- 5
Sam, Hack, Geno, Petty, Tajh Boyd
Total Jets Stats--
54 G, 56.5% CMP, 10,355 yds (191.7/g), 50 TDs (<1/g, 2.9 TD%), 61 int (>1/g, 3.9 INT %)
Obviously this will change for the better with Sam but what an ugly group of QBs thus-far. 5 taken in 7 drafts and not much to show. In fact, the 3.9 INT% is tied with Tim Couch for 117th all time and the TD% is tied with David Carr for 188th all time. Wonderful. A more interesting thing is that Darnold and Geno are the only ones picked in the first two rounds. For a team that had been looking for a franchise guy since the 70s, we didn't seriously draft one until Darnold at 3. Thanks Mac. Also, thanks Mac.
RBs Drafted-- 3
McGuire, Cannon, and Tommy Bohannon
Total Jets Stats--
78 Games (26 per player), 23 REC, 223 yds (8.5 yds/g), 238 rushes (79 per player), 771 yds (257/player, 10.9 y/g), 9 total TDs
Honestly this one surprises me a bit. The Jets didn't really have a capable every down guy and, aside from Powell, they didn't have much consistency at the position. Even with RBs decreased value, it's surprising that we didn't at least try to support the offense with cheap later round options instead of constantly buying off the scrap heap. RBs also are taken for special teams help and 3rd down roles, neither of which we found in our seven drafts. Bohannon was a fullback in an era where the fullback is useless. McGuire had some fun moments but never did anything of note. Cannon has shown zero ability as a 3rd down back and returner. This is an area good teams find contributing special teams players and offensive playmakers.
WRs Drafted-- 7
Enunwa, Shaq Evans, Jalen Saunders, Devin Smith, Peake, Chad Hansen, Ardarius Stewart
For these stats, I won't include Enunwa. We know how he's been. He's been ok or bad, more bad than OK. Here's his career line first.
41 games, 119 REC, 1617 YDS (39.4 y/g), 5 TDs
That is the best WR drafted by the Jets since Jerricho Cotchery in 2004 or Jeremy Kerley in 2011. By a lot. Now for.... the rest.... oh god. For real. This is probably the second worst position group. I know, who can be worse? Just wait.
Total Jets Stats--
78 games (13 per player, a solid 0 from Shaq Evans helps this average), 47 REC (7.8 per player, 3.6 G), 525 YDS (87.5 per player, 7 Y/G), ONE FUCKING TOUCHDOWN
The stats speak for themselves here. How do you support a QB drafting WRs like this. Over the course of 7 years we have found one WR capable of playing even semi-decently and he can't stay on the field. This is absurd. This is outrageous. This is why we suck. We have found exactly zero offensive playmakers over 10 RB/WR picks.
TEs Drafted-- 4
Herndon, Leggett, Wesco, the GOAT Jace Amaro
Total Jets Stats--
47 games (11.7 per player), 91 REC (22.8 per player, 1.5 G), 961 YDS (240.3 per player, 15.9 Y/G), 7 TDs
Is this a bad group? Kinda. Yeah. Amaro was a massive bust in the second round. Davante Adams, Carlos Hyde, Jimmy Galapagos, Jarvis Landry, and Preston Brown were all taken between Amaro and Macdougle in 2014. Leggett was useless as well, providing zero reason to keep him more than a year. Wesco hasn't touched the field outside blocking on occasion. Yes, Herndon looks legit and he could end up the 4th or 5th best pick of this "era" behind Darnold, Jenkins, Prez, Quinnen/Leo. But his three companions in this group are hot garbage at best.
Safeties Drafted-- 3
Maye and Mal..... oh and Calvin Pryor
Semi-Total Jets Stats--
58 games, 4 INTs, 25 pass defenses, 7 forced fumbles, 6 sacks, 327 total tackles, 25 passes defended for Mal and Maye*
This is the best position group of our drafts. When Mal and Maye are on the field together, it's a thing of beauty. I don't need to dive in too much here. They're great players. Enough said.
Although I found it weird we only drafted three safeties in 7 years.
*I forgot about Pryor until the end and I really don't feel like mentioning him. He sucked. Ass. Just trust me here.
Linebackers drafted-- 7
Trevor Reilly, Jeremiah George, Lorenzo Mauldin, Jenkins, Lee, Cashman, Polite
Total Jets Stats--
145 games played (20.7 games per player), 415 total tackles (59.3 per player, 2.9 per game), 37 TFLs (5.3 per player), 4 INTs, 8 FF, 25.5 sacks, 66 QB hits, 18 passes defended
This is a group that includes pass rushing and off ball LBs. Honestly, the only impressive one out of this group is Jenkins. He accounts for almost half the sacks and a third of the QB hits. Lee was a bust and a half outside his 3 INTs (all last year), Mauldin was hurt and never reached his potential, and the rest are either too young (Cashman) or outright bad. It's not a terrible group with Jenkins and potentially Cashman. Certainly not as bad as others. Polite drags it down quite a lot, at least Reilly was a ST contributor for 2 seasons.
Defensive Linemen Drafted-- 8
Quinnen, Shepherd, Fatukasi, Dylan Donahue, Leonard Williams, Deon Simon, Ik "Iron Fist" Enkempali, Sheldon Richardson
Total Jets Stats--
169 games (21 games per player, 24 not counting Q), 417 total tackles (52 per player), 77 TFLs (9.6 per player, it's 5 total without Sheldon and Leo), 36.5 sacks, 149 QB hits (Ik doesn't have one on the field, shockingly), 7 forced fumbles, 2 INTs lol
Wow. For drafting DL all the fucking time we ended up with two mediocre ones and a pile of garbage. Honestly, the numbers without Leo and Sheldon are just..... so bad. Quinnen could end up a beast but its far too early. This is, sadly, our second best position group we've drafted after safety. Linebackers coming in a close third. I seriously think that we are cursed when the meme position is this bad.
So, you're probably saying "Stoner, you missed two groups." No, I was saving them for last. Because they're the most................. fun.
Corners Drafted-- 8
Get ready for this.
Dee Millner, Brandon Dixon, Dexter McDougle, Juston Burris, Derrick Jones, Jeremy Clark, Parry Nickerson, Blessuan Austin
Total Jets Stats--
97 games (12 games per player. TWELVE), 117 tackles (14.6 per player), 28 passes defended (3.5 per player lmaooooo), 5 INTs
Lets go back to the passes defensed. You wanna know where 19 of those 28 passes defensed came from? Dee Millner. Those 28 PDs are less than the three safeties we drafted. NONE of the corners we drafted made it to a 4th year with us. In fact, if you eliminate the final 2 weeks of 2013 our 8 drafted corners have 2 INTs in Seven. Fucking. Years. Mike Mac's corners (all 5 of them), combined for those 2 other INTs and 8 passes defensed. Leonard Williams has 1 INT and 3 passes defensed. Also, the first and only first round corner we drafted was Millner. There's a very, very obvious reason our corners suck. We haven't done anything remotely close to adequate to address the position and our prior GMs should be ashamed.
Finally, the moment we've all been waiting for.
OL Drafted-- 7
Oday Aboushi (15 games, 10 starts), Brian Winters (82 games, 72 starts), William Campbell (0 snaps), Dakota Dozier (37 games, 7 starts), Jarvis Harrison (0 snaps), Brandon Shell (36 games, 31 starts), Chuma Edoga (0 snaps)
Yes, friends. This is all the OL we have drafted. Clearly Winters is the tops in this group but there is literally zero talent here. Shell is the second best player in a group where the best is a mediocre guard who is always hurt. Mr. Mac drafted two of them in 5 drafts and Idzik drafted two guys who didn't even make it out of camp. Winters is also kind of a self fulfilling prophecy as well. Shell too. The reason they have been able to start so many games over the years is because we haven't drafted well at the position. Winters is a bottom tier guard and Shell is a bottom tier tackle. Neither would be starting on 22 other teams.
So that's it. I've depressed myself enough for one night. Oh.... wait
PUNTERS DRAFTED-- 1
THE GOAT. THE LAC NESS MONSTER. THE PUNTER FROM DOWN UNDER. MR. LAC EDWARDS. THE PREMIER PICK OF THE MACCAGNAN ERA
GOODNIGHT EVERYONE.

2019.07.13 17:27 iWin4Prep iWin4Prep's DD Second Base Rankings, 07/13/2019

Next up is Second Base. Second base has been dominated by Roberto Alomar and Joe Morgan since the very early days of this game. Morgan was an early first pick for many (Silver 1) as the 2b landscape started out pretty grim compared to other positions. As soon as Alomar was announced, Morgan took a bit of a back seat. Let's dive in.
For my outfield rankings, check here.
For my First Base rankings, check here.
TIER 1: The Interchangeables
  1. SS Roberto Alomar - All four of these guys are so close to each other in the ratings that it's really moot to try and make a distinction. The community loves Alomar for being a switch hitter and that's why I've decided to place him above the others. If you have any of the four here, then you are set at 2b for the foreseeable future.
  2. SS Ryne Sandberg - Out of the three non-collection based players he has the most power.
  3. SS Joe Morgan - Out of the four he has the most speed (slightly more). Also to note, he may have the most unique batting stance in the game at only 5'7" where he kinda leans into the plate.
  4. SS Roger Hornsby - Hitting. Machine. 125 vision, 125/125 contact. 94/99 power. Fielding is his knock, but if he's at 2b then he's holding 75 fielding and 65 RCT. That's not good, but with those hitting stats, it might be serviceable enough. Speed at 81 is good. The fielding is the reason I rated him fourth. Defense is very important at 2b in this game, and the other 3 here at phenomenal at it.
TIER 2: The really, really good group
  1. SS Rod Carew - One could argue that Carew deserves to be in tier 1 and you might be right. His contact/vision is the best of all 4 non collection based players ranked so far. His speed is second only to Joe Morgan. However he has the least amount of power and there's a sizeable decrease in his fielding compared to the other three (Sans hornsby). For these reasons I feel he is safely just behind the top 4. An excellent choice for contact/speed teams tho, as he can also play 1b.
  2. SS Omar Vizquel - The Ichiro of the infield in a sense. Very low power (56, not as low as Ichiros 30's if I recall) but high contact and vision with great speed. Amazing defense here.
  3. SS Dustin Pedroia - Awesome fielding for 2b (his only downside is 70 arm strength, but that's not too much of an issue at 2b), awesome contact+vision, some pop, but "only" 69 speed compared to the top 5 players here.
  4. SS Ian Kinsler - What you give up in contact you gain in power here. More power than Dustin, but less contact. Slightly more speed and slightly worse of a defender. Eh, take your pick! Both are great.
  5. SS Michael Young - Extremely high contact with some really solid pop at 76. Solid fielding, but not as superstarish as the others, and only 58 speed (at this point, kind of below average for 2b).
TIER 3: The Fall off Begins
  1. SS Bill Mazeroski - Bill seems to be 'the best of the worst' here, but the fall off now is really harsh. Any of those top 8 guys are awesome to start at second base, but if you have any of these guys in tier 3 and beyond, you will want to upgrade to one of those top 8 guys. Bill has 125 vision (awesome), but only ~90 contact ratings and mid 60's power. His speed is slow (at 2b at least) at 55, while his fielding numbers are great. Low power and low speed make him a very 'boring' choice.
  2. FS Nick Senzel - The card that has it all, including position eligibility! 75/75 fielding/reaction here with solid speed (77) and good contact with a decent power and a vision of 73. A total package!
  3. ASG Max Muncy - Power and fielding, baby! That's about it. Massive power from the 2b spot with 100/100, fielding is really solid, but relatively slowish (58), and low vision (66) hurt him here. Contact is decent at best.
  4. All Star Robinson Cano - Really nice card, but kind of expected this card to have more power. 93 vision with awesome fielding.
  5. AS Dee Gordon - It feels odd putting a gold card above many diamonds. This is making the most out of the ratings you are given, I suppose. Insane speed (95) and base stealing. Solid fielding (arm strength at 52 sucks, but rest is good). High contact with mediocre vision (84) and no power. Having no power might be a good thing as we've seen with Ichiro's card. No power might correlate to less deep line outs and more bloop hits? I don't know, but this is a true gimmick card. Pretty deadly.
TIER 4: Could do worse...
  1. AS Bret Boone- Vision at 77 is sufficient but not good. Contact is solid, power is there, fielding is good and speed is not wonderful at 56. You'll want to upgrade at some point, but not the worst card.
  2. Veteran Paul Molitor - Really good contact numbers with a vision at 87. Fielding is not great relative to others at only 70. Speed is good at 82. Power abysmal. IMO, a pretty boring card, but gets the job done, I guess.
  3. Topps Now Ketel Marte - Great hitting stats with 89 vision, but fielding at a secondary position puts him at 74 fielding and 72 reaction. Not great, but serviceable, and he has good speed.
  4. June 2019 D.J. Lemahieu - Wanted to put Lemahieu in tier 5. However, his contact is actually pretty good and his defense is great. His speed at this point in the tier is above average at 58. Some power against righties as well. Not too awful of a card here.
  5. HW Ryne Sandberg - Really good contact with an 81 vision rating. No power here at all, but great fielding and some good speed at 78. Nice card!
  6. AS Jackie Robinson- 114 vision, great contact numbers, minor pop, and great speed! The problem? at 2b he holds a 66 fielding with 68 reaction. Not great in the field.
TIER 5: aka Tier 4b?
  1. FS Brendan Rodgers - Rodgers has fair contact and some power against righties. At 73 vision that gives him a solid but not phenomenal hitting presence. Fielding and speed are actually good at 80 and 67 respectively.
  2. FS Keston Hiura- Very close to Rodgers in all statistics. Good contact with some moderate pop against both handed pitchers. 78 vision is moderate. Fielding is acceptable at 78 and speed leaves a little to be desired at 58. However, can someone please tell me how Mr. Hiura has a power rating of 71/79 while Mookie friggen' Betts has a power rating of 65/66?? I digress...
  3. LS Mookie Betts - Seems to odd putting this elite player below two FS's who haven't proven anything at the MLB level. I'm not arguing that the FS cards need a downgrade, but rather that LS players like Mookie should have better stats! This is an elite 5-tool player but only has OK hitting stats. His fielding is superb and speed is good (77). Could benefit from quirks and might make a better play than the two FS players? You be the judge there.
  4. LS Jose Altuve - Eerily similar stats to Betts in contact/powevision/speed, but is significantly worse in the field.
  5. AS Ben Zobrist - 69 vision isn't great for this tier, but outside of that this card has a little of everything. Good fielding, good speed, good contact and some decent pop!
  6. BO Ian Kinsler - Good fielding + speed, but soft stats against lefties. Great contact against righties and a nice vision rating of 89.
TIER 6: The Ugly Side of things ( Low vision and/or Low Fielding)
  1. LS Javier Baez- Leftie killer here, but contact at only 43 makes this card useless on HOF for most of us. Fielding and speed are great and against righties he's not horrible with contact at 78 and power at 70. Vision really, really hurts this card tho.
  2. LS Trevor Story - Vision at 41 is awful. Useless on HOF. His speed is great, but his fielding takes a hit at 2b (65). Power is very real and contact against lefties is great.
  3. AS Daniel Murphy - Much like Trea Turner (rookie) the fielding on this card is awful. But unlike the rookie Turner card, the vision here is high at 95, contact is better, and the card has some low end power. Speed sucks tho.
  4. Veteran Brian Dozier - Speed + Power, with OK fielding (But bad RCT). Vision at 64, not fantastic, but can be passable.
  5. BO Brandon Phillips- Good fielding, good speed, but merely a platoon bat for against lefties.
  6. Topps Now Gleyber Torres - Extremely low vision combined with low fielding and average at best speed (50) hurt this card a lot. Good power tho at 105/80.
  7. May Derek Dietrich - Same story as the Torres. Low fielding and speed combined with a rough 60 vision. Really nice power against righties 120, but then no power against lefties (57).
  8. LS Andrelton Simmons - Hey, a LS card with a vision of 98? Cool! Defense is fantastic as well. Speed is OK at 50. But super low power and only 80/72 contact make this card very dull on the hitting side of things.
  9. LS Trea Turner - Speed with low fielding, OK contact+vision combo. No power.
  10. Rookie Trea Turner - Fielding destroys this card. Secondary position penalty puts it at 60 fielding and 58 reaction. Speed is phenomenal, but the vision at 73 isn't enough to push this card up. No power.
  11. BO Rod Carew- "Gimmick" card here a la Ichiro, but with not so good defensive attributes and lower contact against lefties. Vision at 82 is good, but not what you'd want in a card like this.
  12. LS Whit Merrifield- Good contact tool with 75/98 and a vision of 76 is high for a LS card. Decent fielding and of course good speed with Whit. Unspectacular, but won't hurt you like the next card will...
  13. April Tim Anderson - Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh on this card, but lowish vision (62) combined with rough defense (58 after the 2nd position hit) makes this card unplayable. Offense is really solid, but not enough to make up for those two factors. I don't want a butcher at 2b and then have to have a small PCI as well on offense.
  14. LS Carlos Correa - Nothing spectacular about this card, but unlike Whit, the 63 defense might hurt you. 63 vision is 13 points less than Whit as well. Otherwise, good hitting stats and some speed (61).
  15. PS Ben Zobrist - Good all around player with contact at 84, decent fielding and average speed (52).
  16. LS Aldaberto Mondessi- Gimmicky card, but unlike other gimmick cards the low vision (48) and mediocre defense (at best) make it hard to use anywhere.
NOTES: As always, if I forgot anyone, please let me know -- hard to catch all those secondary position characters.
The last half of these rankings was very difficult to do... so IF you have a good statistical argument on a player, please let me know so I can further correct these rankings better. A few players (that I had forgotten about) I had to add in at the end and thus, I could be contradicting myself in a few minor areas. Overall, I feel the tiers are pretty solid.

2019.07.11 17:53 NintenJew Launch Angle and Exit Velocity. What does it mean for our Washington Nationals?

Hey,/Nationals
A couple of weeks ago I made this post for /Phillies but I feel like I could make it for my new home as well after I was traded and my other post seemed to be well received.
Launch angle and exit velocity have become a hot topic recently in baseball and it has been very apparent in any ESPN games as well as the home run derby. If you look at teams like the Dodgers, Astros, Yankees, RedSox, Cubs, etc. they all seem to focus on it and have been successful. But what exactly do launch angle and exit velocity mean? I will try to explore that as well as what it means for our Nationals this year.

Introduction and Background

The first thing you need to know is that the launch angle is based on a horizontally hit ball being zero degrees. Here is a diagram to try to help visualize launch angles.1 I chose this one as it is much simpler than other diagrams normally used. It is also ideal to have a launch angle between 10-30 degrees.2 This is because any ball that is hit lower than 10 degrees will most likely be a groundout. Any ball hit over 30 degrees will likely not have enough distance traveled and just be a popup. Now if you hit a ball from 10-25 degrees, then it most likely will be a line drive and a hit. If you go from 25-30 degrees, you most likely will get a home run.3
Now how do you choose the angle? This is where I believe most people get confused. Launch angle does not mean that you are always trying to get into that 25-30 degree range to try to hit home runs. Instead, it means trying to match your average exit velocity to your ideal launch angle.4 Exit velocity is just the speed of which the ball comes off the bat. You wouldn't want your Dee Gordans or your Ben Reveres constantly swinging for that 25-30 degree launch angle. That would just be silly. They would most likely get out on a weak fly ball. Instead, you would want these types of players to hit in that 10-25 degree range. This would allow them to get singles and constantly get more hits.5
Now, Buster Olney had a great piece on the critiques of launch angle.6 He introduced complaints with an AL staffer believing that launch angle means you want to have all hitters in the 25-30 degree range, which is just not true.
Another concern that was raised by an AL general manager is that there are probably too few coaches capable of teaching hitters how to alter their launch angle effectively without gutting the rest of their offensive production. It’s only logical that if a hitter tilts the angle of his swing upward, the GM said, the bat will be in the strike zone for a shorter period of time, and the margin for error for the point of contact -- when the bat meets the ball -- will be reduced.

The Washington Nationals

Now, what does that mean for the Nationals players? Below I put a list of all our players that have played significant time for us recently. I will also have their average exit velocity as well as their average launch angle.
Name Exit Velocity Launch Angle wOBA xWOBA wRC+
Adam Eaton 86.4 13.9 .332 .332 101
Juan Soto 89.6 10.0 .398 .388 143
Víctor Robles 81.1 15.4 .326 .303 96
Anthony Rendon 91.6 20.1 .410 .432 150
Brian Dozier 88.7 18.6 .328 .319 97
Howie Kendrick 92.2 10.0 .393 .422 139
Trea Turner 89.7 8.6 .353 .322 112
Yan Gomes 86.4 17.7 .267 .280 59
Gerardo Parra 85.8 10.3 .281 .295 96
Matt Adams 89.4 16.8 .328 .358 97
Kurt Suzuki 85.7 18.4 .345 .329 108
Wilmer Difo 81.7 8.4 .257 .255 53
Ryan Zimmerman 89.8 11.0 .308 .289 84
Michael A. Taylor 86.3 6.2 .249 .254 47
The first thing you immediately notice is that almost every hitter in the National's lineup is in the "Ideal Zone" for launch angle. The only exceptions are Trea Turner, Wilmer Difo, and Michael A. Taylor. While Wilmer Difo and Michael A. Taylor have not been having good offensive seasons, Trea Turner has. This is because Trea Turner makes up for it through other means like his sprint speed (Top 1% in the league). Even though Tuner grounds the ball more than average, his speed more than makes up for it.
Launch angle also isn't everything though. Some underperforming members like Yan Gomes have a decent launch angle but have not been having a good offensive season. Launch angle and exit velocity don't explain everything, so it would be silly to rely on it exclusively. Instead, it can be used as a tool that hitting coaches can use to help their players understand why they aren't necessarily getting hits. I hope I also showed that launch angle isn't all about getting home runs, but is instead about getting it over the heads of the infielders. This is why you see some shifts where a 2B or SS are in the outfield between where the infielders normally are and the outfielders normally are. They are accounting for a pull hitter's (usually) launch angle of getting it over the infielders head.

2019.06.11 20:06 iLoveYouLonzo Like Voit, JTurner and Tommy Pham for Judge and Griffin Canning? (H2H)

I’m the 9 seed and only 6 teams make playoffs. I would be giving away judge. My hitting has been abysmal but I have Judge, Gallo, dee Gordon, hunter dozier, and hiura all out. Should I wait for them to come back and hope it’s enough to make playoffs or should I bolster my hitting now? Playoffs are about 10 weeks from now
