2024.05.21 16:39 MBCanadian Midlife career change

Hello all,
I’ve been looking for a midlife (42y) career change and have been lurking on this subreddit for a few months. A little background - I am currently working as a chiropractor in the Tampa area. I’m 15 years in and cannot imagine doing this much longer. For reasons that I could write a dissertation about, healthcare isn’t for me. While I’ve done ok financially running my own solo practice (80k-120k/yr), and even travelled with a professional sports team, I’m looking to transition into a career that’s easier to not bring my work home with me.
I’m single with no kids or pets, so I’ve got no problem with moving for a good job.
I got decent grades through undergrad and grad school, so I’m not too worried about the difficulty of the course work.
I grew up pretty low income, so I’m not opposed to hard physical work. My favorite job ever was working stock rooms in retail in my early 20s. And I know how to take care of my body because of my professional background.
I know I’d likely start making less money than I do now, but at this point in my life the idea of a salary, overtime, paid vacation and even modest benefits sounds like a dream.
So my main questions for the group:
1) Anyone here doing this as their 2nd career who started age 35 or older? Any insights?
2) I’m conveniently close to NAA, and know they offer evening classes, but I’ve heard horrible reviews (here and other places). Are there any other schools that people would recommend that offer evening/night classes? I’d be self funding this and wouldn’t be able to quit my day job to be a full time student.
3) Questions on International portability. In healthcare if you attend an American school, you can work as a doctonurse etc. in other countries, but you’d have to take local board exams. Is A&P similar? If you have the legal ability to work in a different country, is it simply an issue of taking that country’s exams? Or do you need to have X many school or practical hours there? I’m a Canadian citizen and US permanent resident, so that may give me some additional options.
TLDR: Healthcare worker in their 40s gathering info on A&P career change.

2024.05.21 16:32 kaibuprofen What would you do if you were me?

Hi everyone. I'm seeking some advice on kind of a complex situation. Law students would be really good to answer this but ofc anyone can answer.
I'm 21NB. I got pretty good GCSEs and went on to do A Levels. I always had a passion in Law so I picked that alongside Maths and Physics. My grades were - A in Law, B in Maths, and D in Physics. I also did an Extended Project Qualification (worth half an A Level) on the topic of North Korean law. I got a B.
Without getting into it too much, I have suffered with bad mental health issues most of my life but always tried not to let that hold me back. I have pretty much always been getting professional help at any given time.
Once I finished in 2021 I decided I wanted to do a degree in Law with the hope of becoming a criminal barrister. I got into a university that was quite far from home and moved into halls. Everything was fine at first, but my mental health got really bad and it would have been unsafe to stay. Very hard decision but I dropped out a few months into the first year (2022).
I moved back home and spent the next year and a bit really working on myself. I got a job in a shop (upper part time, sometimes full time) to get some income and help me keep occupied. I decided I was well enough to go back to university and try again, starting September 2023 (in Law again). I intentionally chose a university much nearer to home, but opted to move into halls again for the experience of that.
Unfortunately the same thing happened again, actually much worse this time because of certain things that happened. I left even earlier; November 2023. Again, an even harder decision to leave. I also quit my retail job. I originally interrupted my studies rather than withdrew, unlike the first time, with the intention of coming back in September 2024. It would be my 3rd time.
I contacted the university recently asking if I could change my status to withdrawn. I did this because:
  1. I'm still very unwell and am not optimistic that I could get through the degree safely. I also think even if I got through I wouldn't do very well.
  2. My mum, who I live with, is moving far so I'm planning to move to my dad's so that I'm closer to family down here. But, he's kinda far from the uni and I don't have a car yet.
  3. Withdrawing means I have full flexibility to go back anytime in my life if I wanted to. Meaning I don't have to put a date on my recovery (which you can't really do).
  4. I am beginning to realise maybe university is just not for me and I should try alternative routes like apprenticeships.
  5. I am questioning whether the Law profession in general is really suited to me, even though I am passionate about it. There are other things I would consider doing.
  6. I already have £16,000 in student loan debt.
Among other things.
I'm really embarrassed to say but I've been out of work or anything since November (I have been really ill but still feel guilty). One of the reasons I want to move to my dad's is so I can get a retail job down there (because if I was going to get a job here I would have to leave it in a few months so it feels like there is no point.) The move is happening in a week. While I'm working I also want to pass my driving test because I haven't done that yet.
I have been thinking a lot about what I could do going forward. I have been looking at solicitor degree apprenticeships but they're very competitive and all require A Levels Grade A-C... but I have a A, B, D. Goddammit Physics. Same with paralegal level 3 apprenticeships (which would give me a much better chance getting onto a solicitor one).
I have been looking at degree apprenticeships in general and they pretty much all have these A Level requirements.
Obviously these options are not exhaustive but if you were me, would you:
  1. Eventually go back to university and do Law again.
  2. Eventually go back to university but do a degree in another subject.
(Of course these two options would give me more student loan debt.)
  1. Try and get another A Level so that I can do these legal apprenticeships (because I can, but it's like £1,000. Plus that's two years of my life.)
  2. Completely change my career path and possibly do a level 3 apprenticeship (for example in hairdressing.)
I'm just very stressed about the future. I really want to succeed and not let this hold me back anymore.
Some examples of other things I would consider doing is nursing, something in music, hair & beauty, administration. To be honest I'd do anything except retail.
Thank you so much in advance.
TL;DR - I have dropped out of university twice because of mental health, want to pursue a career in Law yet at the same time wondering if it is even the right thing, reluctant to go back to university for a lot of reasons but can't get onto the legal apprenticeships with my A Level grades.

2024.05.21 16:25 renjya Am I being too aspirational? Advice from other henry’s

Currently have abit of an existential dilemma, around what I should do and would love to check my thinking with some other HENRYS. Job wise of late I feel like I am not being challenged enough and that what I am doing is no longer intellectually interesting. Am I just being a child in this matter and unrealistic?
My work situation is pretty great. 100% work from home with maybe 1-2 times every 2 months client travel for 2-3 days. Great WLB I would say I work between 20-50hrs a week (mostly on the lower side). Great boss who is senior in firm and basically gives me everything he can. Salary base around £270k with TC around £400k-450k including bonus ( have revived max payout for 5+ years so no signs of that changing).
The day to day work I find easy as have been doing it for a while but mostly boring. I work in enterprise technology consulting so a lot of working with clients on the business side which is highly political, they are not that savvy and a lot of the work is trying to explain to them how things work in basic terms and advising on best practices ( and selling obviously). The people are a mixed bag a lot of very toxic folks / environments as with a lot of large companies, but most I am advising are decent towards me as I am helping them with their objectives. Most of my day is PowerPoint, email, meetings… the only parts of my day I really enjoy is the +1 topics where I get to get hands on with product management, tech vision and in some instances writing code/ playing with technologies…
From a TC prospective at current firm kinda at the limit unless I want to get into hardcore sales, owning a p&l and travelling a tun. All of which I don’t want…
My options I see as:
1 - The easiest path forward is to do nothing, will continue atleast for next 10 yrs to earn this TC, though from a interest level the least interesting ( though I can potentially do some small side projects).
2 - Move into a new field at company ( trending tech i.e ai) though new boss new network that could turn out to be a nightmare, same for WLB… though would be interesting and give some new career options (though might not transfer into much of a TC difference).
3 - look to jump into a late stage scale up / FAANG with much higher risk/reward but would be way more interesting career wise….though WLB could be again a nightmare.
4 - setup one consulting business, high risk/ reward. Initially higher WLB and potentially no income. I have done this before successfully and due to my profile not crazy risky..
Current situation is: - 1.3m house with 500k loan left - 500-600k in shares, isa, savings. - 200k pension
Am I crazy to keep coasting in option 1 even though career wise there’s not much growth / intellectually fairly boring…

2024.05.21 15:54 njerejeje “Lindor only heats up when the Mets are out of it!”

I don’t know how this talking point among the anti-Lindor crowd became popular, but it is now the go-to argument whenever someone points out that Lindor has had objectively excellent numbers through his first 3+ years as a Met. “He sucks when the games matter and statpads when the Mets are eliminated making his numbers look good!!” But if you actually care to look into it(or, you know, think about it for more than 10 seconds), it’s flat out wrong for several reasons, which I’ll list below
1: The idea on its face is just absurd. Baseball players do not become more capable of hitting the ball just because of the standings position of the team they play for. I have legitimately never heard of any other MLB player who has been evaluated like this because it’s an insane way to evaluate players. If you’re going to make a claim as out there as this, you’re going to need some truly irrefutable evidence. Even if Lindor was legitimately a .600 OPS hitter until the Mets’ playoff chances dropped below 10%, then became a 1.000 OPS hitter after that, I argue it would still not show that he can’t plays worse BECAUSE the Mets are playing important games. And as it turns out…

2: We have a VERY large track record of Lindor having success in important situations as a Met. Take, oh I don’t know, the entire 2022 season, where he not only had the 2nd best offensive season by OPS+ in his career in a year where the Mets were in playoff contention all year, but had a .974 OPS in what baseball reference calls “high leverage situations”. Or the fact that as a Met overall, his OPS in high leverage situations is over .800.
Or the fact that even THIS season with terrible overall offensive production so far, he has a .800 OPS in “high leverage situations”. It’s actually the “low leverage situations” that he sucks in, with a .482 OPS. If the argument is that Lindor crumbles under pressure, this last stat sure seems to contradict that claim.

3: The entire basis for this argument came from last season, where Lindor had a .749 OPS through the end of June, before having a .866 OPS from July through September. But if you actually look at the breakdown by month, it gives more context to that. From June through September, he had an OPS above .800 in every single month. The Mets were, notably, in a good position mid-late June(where Lindor had a .816 OPS! Good offensive production in games that matter!). Even in July, the Mets were still not completely dead and there was still some hope of salvaging the season until the Robertson trade. The games still “mattered”, if that’s what you care about. And Lindor dominated in July, it was his best offensive month of the season with a .923 OPS.
I just find it extremely unlikely that the reason for Lindor’s better 2nd half is that he knew the Mets weren’t going to make the playoffs, knew that the games didn’t matter, and that somehow(?) caused him to be a significantly better hitter. A far more likely explanation is that he just had a bad month, as literally every MLB player does, and this bad month happened to be in May last year.
Also, I tried to avoid bringing up fWAR, but I couldn’t resist bringing up this little tidbit:
At the end of June last year, Lindor was 4th among shortstops in fWAR, and one of the people ahead of him was Wander Franco, so I’m making him 3rd. The “bad and unclutch” part of Lindor’s 2023 was STILL some of the best shortstop play in all of MLB.

Feel free to think what you want about Lindor, I can’t stop you. But PLEASE stop using this argument, it’s absurd both on its face and beneath the surface, and it makes me lose brain cells every time I see someone make it.

2024.05.21 15:51 BulletproofBean I (35F) am just realising how Narc my mam is after being detached enough to see it.

I’ve moved out of my mams 3 times in total since being in my teens. After the first and second time, I moved back home until I met my now Fiancé and we moved in together once we’d been in the relationship a year.
It’s been 9 years since I moved out for good and I now have 4yr old twin girls of my own, pets, a career, social life, house to run etc. My mam still works full time too and so we’re both busy and although we live down the road from one another, we now often go a couple of weeks without seeing one another. This is usually because I get sick of having to work around her weekend schedule and drag the kids round to see her (when they don’t want to) and she never makes the effort to come here.
Having the proper time apart and not seeing her at least 2-3 times a week has really made me re-evaluate growing up.
I am the eldest of 4 siblings (32M, 28F, 26M) and I’m called “the second mam”. One of my brothers even lives with me due to MH and addiction issues (he’s clean - kids come first). They often recall how much I did for them growing up and how close they all are to me. They trust me with everything, more than my mam and know I’ll always have their back.
Mam went back to college and then university to be a nurse when I was just starting secondary school age 11. She had long study periods and also picked up shift work as a student to help with money, either overnight or on a weekend. Hats off to her for bettering herself for her and her family - I absolutely cannot slate her for that.
What really really gets me, is, when my siblings talk about how much I was there for them, helping raise them (dad worked away all week and was only home Friday & Saturday night♥️), cooking for them, bathing them, putting them to bed, getting them ready for school, helping with homework, helping them when sick during the night, cleaning their wounds, talking to them when they felt sad or alone……all the things a parent should do, mam tells us all I didn’t do any of it 😳 I also (no exaggeration here) did ALL ironing on Sunday afternoon (so 6 people’s worth), almost all of the housework and look after the dog. If I didn’t, I was brandished a lazy bitch. My entire close family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, close friends) all remember how I literally didn’t stop even when mam was at home! The kids on the street used to make fun of me and say “can’t stay and play? Got to watch the kids?” My best friend (friends 33yrs) despises my mam for taking away my teenage years as I wasn’t allowed to stay out anywhere - if I did, I got “well, you need to be back early in the morning as you’ve housework to do”. Even though she was off!
The issue I have, is how she literally says to me and my siblings, “I did it all myself when I was your ages. Worked, went to uni, looked after the 4 of you and kept this house immaculate all myself with no help”. WHAT?! If one of us dares to suggest that I did a lot to help, she hits the roof and denies it so maliciously “HA YOOUUU must have hit your head then SWEETHEART because your memories are very wrong aren’t they?!” And stuff like that. All of this because my sister asked for help during half term with my niece 😳😂. Mam bleated and barked on about how she was soooo busy and always flat out with everything because she had no help during the week (she even took my weekends!!!).
Anyway, honestly I just needed to get this written down somewhere as it’s been driving me mad and I don’t want to cause real life arguments. Apologies for the formatting, I am on my phone 😊 Thank you x

2024.05.21 15:16 Evening_Ad_5990 Need job in clinical research

It's sooooo irritating man like I am trying my best to land a job in my field my domain but nah it's just getting harder and harder to find any decent job bought those premium membership also but no use I have 2 years of total experience n still it's getting hard to find a job in Mumbai n m getting job call for hr marketing 😭 idk what to do n recently I got call for research analyst but it's just data scrapping work n m an non it person but got selected n the work is very very basic what should I do?
Edited Dear critic's/judgemental people,
I find the current situation quite vexing as I am earnestly endeavoring to secure employment within my specialized field, yet the endeavor is proving increasingly arduous. Despite investing in premium memberships, the quest for a suitable position remains elusive. Notwithstanding my two years of cumulative professional experience, the pursuit of a desirable job opportunity in Mumbai has become notably challenging, with inquiries predominantly veering towards roles in HR and marketing.
Most recently, I received an offer for a research analyst position, albeit one primarily centered on data scraping tasks. As an individual without a background in IT, the nature of the work appears rudimentary and fails to align with my skill set and career aspirations.
In light of these circumstances, I am confronted with a dilemma regarding the most prudent course of action. It is imperative to engage in a thorough deliberation, weighing the merits and demerits of accepting a role that may not fully leverage my competencies or offer the professional advancement I seek. Reflecting on my overarching career objectives and assessing the extent to which this opportunity aligns with them will be instrumental in determining the optimal path forward.
Enjoy idiot's

2024.05.21 15:01 FelicitySmoak_ Tuesday, May 21, 2013 - Jackson v. AEG Live Day 15

Tuesday, May 21, 2013 - Jackson v. AEG Live Day 15
Trial Day 15
Katherine, Rebbie and Trent Jackson are at court.
LA Times reported that the Jacksons offered a settlement.
Kevin Boyle , a lawyer for Katherine Jackson and Michael's kids , said they offered to settle the lawsuit against AEG, but that they never got an answer. Kevin Boyle said the family made the offers in January & March. Boyle would not provide details but said AEG's insurance would have paid, which means they could have settled the case without them paying a dime of their money. He said AEG has never offered to settle & they haven't apologized.
Marvin Putnam, an attorney for AEG, said it was inappropriate to discuss settlement discussions:
"We don't settle matters that are utterly baseless. We believe that is the case in this matter. I can't see why we would consider a settlement as anything other than a shakedown"
CNN Reports there was a snack controversy during trial: AEG lawyers gave a bag of peppermint candy to the bailiff to hand out to the jury this week. Even Katherine Jackson enjoyed the treat but Jackson's lawyer raised an objection, suggesting jurors might be influenced if they realized the source of the sweets. A compromise was reached. Each side can provide snacks for jurors, but they'll be placed at the bailiff's desk before jurors enter court so they have no clue who brought it.
Shawn Trell Testimony
Jackson direct
AEG Live General Counsel, Shawn Trell, told jurors that he had forgotten that Kenny Ortega was working under a signed contract.
Trell said he met with his attorneys last night and reviewed one doc -- Kenny Ortega's contract.
"He had a written contract," Trell said. "I remember the email dynamic. I'm not too proud to admit that I didn't recall the cover contract," Trell said he was changing his previous testimony to add that Ortega had a written contract, not only emails between him and AEG
Next topic was Insurance: Cancellation/Non-Appearance/Sickness. Trell said he started working on insurance for the tour in November of 2008. Panish showed several chains of emails where the parties talked about the insurance for the tour
Email from Bob Taylor insurance broker to Trell on 1/7/09:
"Prior to speaking with carriers we ask the artist to attend medical with a doctor...A full medical with both blood/urine tests. The doctor also wants to review the medical records over the last 5 years to ensure full disclosure. Insurers require further medical examination to be carried out by their nominated doctor. They may restrict illness coverage or death from illness coverage until this examination has taken place"
Email from 4/30/09 - Wooley to Trell :
"We have no coverage against Michael sickness unless and until he submits to another medical in London
Email from 5/28/09 - Trell to Taylor:
"We really need to get that medical done"
Email from 6/23/09 - Trell to Taylor :
"Any update on the availability of Term insurance?" (life insurance)
Trell said if they secured life insurance, they would get money if Michael died.
"We would get the money owed to us, yes," Trell testified.
Trell also said he continued discussions with an insurance broker about additional coverage to recoup AEG Live's investment if the tour had to be canceled.
Email from 6/24/09 -Taylor to Trell :
"Insurers have refused to move on this. Huge amount of speculation in the media regarding artist's health. They feel if they're to consider providing illness to cover this particular artist, they must have very through medical report"
Email from 6/25/09 - Gongaware to Taylor :
"If we don't get sickness coverage, we are dropping this policy"
Email from 6/25/09 - Taylor to Gongaware :
"The consultation in London is critical. The doctor is holding the afternoon of the 6th July open at Harley St. But keep in mind the visit could take 2 hours plus"
Next topic: Budget/Costs. Panish showed an email from AEG's Rick Webking to Michael's estate with 1st report of artist advances/expenses. This was a letter sent to the estate containing the expenses incurred, Trell said.
"It seems to me we submitted this report for their review, I don't see any request for payment," Trell said.
Trell said he spoke with Randy Phillips and Paul Gongaware about Michael's physical condition prior to coming to testify.
"I had heard about rehearsals in which Mr. Jackson was fantastic," Trell said
Trell said he's aware of email from Ortega saying doctor was not allowing Michael to attend rehearsal on June 14, 2009.
"I was aware of the doctor not allowing him to attend rehearsal," Trell said
Email from 6/17/09 from Phillips:
"...Ortega, Gongaware, Dileo, and his doctor Conrad from Vegas and I have an intervention with him to get him to focus and come to rehearsal"
Email from 6/17/09 from Gongaware to Phillip's assistant:
"We need a physical therapist and a nutritionist"
Email from Production Manager - Gongaware/Phillips on 6/19/09 :
"Paul/Randy I'm not bring a drama queen here. Kenny asked me to notify you both Michael was sent home without stepping foot on stage. He was a basket case and Kenny was concerned he would embarrass himself on stage, or worse yet, be hurt. The company is rehearsing right now, but the DOUBT is pervasive"
Email from Randy Phillips to Tim Leiweke on 6/19/09 :
"We have a huge problem here."
"I think he recognized there was a problem on the 19th," Trell said. "I would take it seriously, as I believe Mr. Phillips did."
Trell agreed with a statement by plaintiff's attorney, Brian Panish, that company executives knew by then there was a "deep issue" with Jackson
Does Trell consider that exchange a "red flag" that AEG Live should have noticed, Panish asked.
"I would take it seriously, as I believe Mr. Phillips did," Trell answered. "I don't know I would use the word 'red flag'
One of the emails shown to the jury was from Jackson estate co-executor John Branca, sent 5 days before Jackson's death & marked 'confidential':
"I have the right therapist/spiritual advisosubstance abuse counselor who could help (recently helped Mike Tyson get sober and paroled) Do we know whether there is a substance issue involved (perhaps better discussed on the phone)
The email was sent the same day that a meeting was held at Jackson's home with Murray. No further info given to jury.
Trell said Mr. Phillips never told him about this email
Email from Ortega to Randy Phillips on 6/20/09: (chain of emails)
"I honestly don't think he is ready for this based on his continued physical weakening and deepening emotional state"
Trell said he didn't see these emails. He said he spoke with Randy Phillips about Phillips' perception of Michael, in order to prepare for testifying, but not about specific emails. Trell has been designated as the most qualified person to speak on behalf of AEG
Email from Phillips to Gongaware on 6/20/09 at 1:52 am :
"Tim and I are going to see him tomorrow, however, I'm not sure what the problem is Chemical or Physiological?"
From Gongaware to Phillips, on 6/20/09 at 5:59 am :
"Take the doctor with you. Why wasn't he there last night?"
From Phillips to Gongaware, on 6/20/09 at 2:01 pm :
"He is not a psychiatrist so I'm not sure how effective he can be at this point obviously, getting him there is not the issue. It is much deeper"
Trell said Randy Phillips went to a handful of rehearsals, three at the Forum and two at Staples Center. The head of the marketing department attended rehearsal on June 23, 2009.
"She was blown away by it," Trell testified.
He said he was unaware of issues with Jackson at rehearsals.
"I knew of no problems with Michael Jackson at all",Trell testified.
Trell said he never saw the emails from Phillips directing people to exclude images from This Is It of Michael looking "skeletal" while rehearsing.
"What were his observations of Michael's physical condition during rehearsal," Trell said. "I asked for his (Phillips) personal opinion."
Next line of questioning is about human resources and background checks. Trell said they can be valuable and useful tools when hiring. Background check costs around $40 to $125. Trell said AEG Live could afford this fee. "We don't do background checks on independent contractors," Trell said. Trell said he was involved in the hiring by AEG Live for the This Is It tour. His department was responsible for retaining independent contractors. Trell said he is not familiar with background check process for hiring.
"I am not familiar with the process of doing background checks," Trell said. "No training."

Panish: "There was no hiring criteria for the This Is It tour, correct?"
Trell: "Not to my knowledge"
Trell testified that when it comes to independent contractors, they have either worked with the artists, AEG or known in the industry. Trell agreed that no background check was done on anyone working on the This Is It tour. AEG Live General Counsel Shawn Trell told jurors that no legal or financial checks were done involving Conrad Murray or anyone else who worked as an independent contractor on the This Is It shows.
Depending on the nature of the position, a background could be done, Trell said, like for potential employees in the financial area. Trell said he thought a background check would be appropriate for people working in financial roles, but not tour personnel who weren't employees of AEG
As to independent contractors, Trell said there's no supervision and monitoring like there's for employees
Panish: "You don't do anything to check into background, supervise or protect the artist?"
Trell: "No, safety is a concern"
Trell said that AEG did not hire Murray, that the doctor was like many independent contractors,
"When they leave the environment, what they do on their own time is their own business"
Trell testified he doesn't believe the artist is more at risk because AEG Live doesn't do background checks
"We did nothing to monitor Dr. Murray," Trell said. "We did not monitor whatever it was that he was doing, no."
"It called for Michael Jackson being able to terminate Dr. Murray at will," Trell said about the contract. "If the concerts didn't go forward, and he was terminated under this provision, Dr. Murray would not be paid going forward," Trell explained
As to Dr Murray being under dire financial straits, Trell said that he doesn't know if he agrees with it, everyone's perception is different
Trell: "I certainly wasn't aware of it at the time"
Panish: "Because you didn't check, right?"
Trell: "That's right"
"I don't think conflict of interests are a good thing, and we would want to prevent it," Trell said
Email from Kathy Jorie to Shawn Trell on 6/24/09 at 12:54 am:
Subject: Revised agreement with GCA Holdings/Dr. MurrayIt had two attachments Attachments: Revised Michael Jackson -AEG GCA Holdings Murray Agreement 6-18-09 Final MJ -- AEG GCA Holdings Agreement (Dr. Murray) 6-23-09
Email chain from 6/23/09, 5:39pm from Jorrie to Wooley, Murray
Subject: RE: Michael Jackson - Revised Agreement with GCA Holdings/Dr. Murray Email:
"I have redlined the Word version so that you can see all of the revisions. In addition, I've attached clean PDF version for execution" (The email says that if Dr. Murray approved it, he was to print it, sign and send it back to Jorrie)

Panish: "Did Ms. Jorrie call this contract a draft?"
Trell: "She called it a Final Version"
"Every document is a draft until it is executed," Trell said.
Panish showed emails exchanged among AEG executives that contained drafts of Murray's contract. Although Murray had signed a contract with the company, neither Jackson nor anyone from AEG had added their signatures. Trell testified that a copy of the contract had never been sent to Jackson
With Trell on the stand, Panish played part of an interview that AEG Live President Randy Phillips gave to Sky News television soon after Michael's death.
"This guy was willing to leave his practice for a very large sum of money, so we hired him," Phillips said.
Panish also showed jurors an e-mail between AEG lawyers suggesting that Phillips told other interviewers AEG Live "hired" Murray.
Panish: "Isn't it true that Randy Phillips made numerous comments that AEG Live hired Dr. Murray?"
Trell: "I know he has made that statement"
Panish said AEG higher-ups became concerned after Phillips made such admission. Trell said he didn't know if that was true. Bruce Black is the General Counsel for parent company of AEG and AEG Live. Michael Roth is AEG's media relations
Email from Kathy Jorrie to Bruce Black and Michael Roth on 8/25/09:
Subject: AEG Live president says AEG Live hired Dr. Conrad Murray
Panish shows Trell a deposition, under oath, given by insurance broker Bob Taylor on another case. Trell said he has never seen or read it. Trell denied having a telephone conversation with Mr. Taylor where Trell asked him if a doctor's compensation was covered in the insurance.
Panish: "Does that refresh your recollection that AEG was employing Dr. Murray?"
Trell: "Mr. Taylor has this completely wrong"
After lunch break, Brian Panish asked if Shawn Trell wanted to change anything else in his testimony, to which he said "No"
Bruce Black, attorney for Anschutz, was present in the meeting with LAPD. Trell met with the police on 1/12/10. Trell told the police that day that Dr. Murray would receive $150,000 compensation per month. Trell also said that Dr. Murray requested and AEG would provide necessary medical equipment and a nurse. More than five months after Jackson's death, Trell said, he informed LAPD detectives that Murray initially requested $5 million to join the tour but eventually agreed to a salary of $150,000 a month for 10 months.
Panish: "As far as you know, all the agreements written for TII tour was done under AEG Live Productions, right?"
Trell: "Yes"
Panish: "Was Dr. Murray trying to help AEG get insurance?"
Trell: "The policy was in both names, so he was helping both parties"
Trell said Dennis Hawk, who represented Michael, was in touch with Taylor regarding the insurance
Panish: "As of June 2009, you don't even know whether Mr. Jackson had a personal manager
working for him, right?"
Trell: "Well, my understanding at the time there were a couple of people acting in that capacity"
Email on 6/2/09 from Randy Phillips to Jeff Wald:
"Jeff, remember getting Michael to focus is not the easiest thing in the world and we still have no lawyer, business manager, or, even real manager in place. It is a nightmare!"
Trell said the only time he saw an artist's signature required to retain an independent contractor was for Dr. Murray. Trell said his understanding was that Dr. Murray worked for Michael for 3 years; didn't know how many times MJ saw Dr. Murray.
"I've never spoken with Dr. Murray ever. And I met/spoke with Mr. Jackson once," Trell said.

"He was a significant expense," Trell testified about Dr. Murray.
Trell said AEG Live didn't do anything to check Dr. Murray's competency as doctor, other than checking his physician license. Trell said AEG didn't do anything to determine Dr. Murray's financial conditions in 2009.
Jury was shown an email that Phillips sent to Kenny Ortega on night of June 20, 2009. It was email urging Ortega to stand down.
Email on 6/20/09 Phillips to Ortega :
"Kenny it's critical that neither you, me, anyone around this show become amateur psychiatrist/physicians. I had a lengthy conversation with Dr. Murray, who I am gaining immense respect for as I get to deal with him more. He said that Michael is not only physically equipped to perform & discouraging him to will hasten his decline instead of stopping it. Dr. Murray also reiterated that he is mentally able to and was speaking to me from the house where he had spent the morning with Michael. This doctor is extremely successful (we check everyone out) and does not need this gig so he is totally unbiased and ethical"
Panish asked Trell whether Phillips "characterization to Ortega, given no background check was done, was a lie". Trell responded that he didn't know what Phillips knew or was thinking when he wrote that email to Ortega. Trell also said he expected Randy Phillips to testify at some point during the trial, so he could address the email himself
Panish then asked Trell, "Sir, you never checked out one single thing about Dr. Murray -- you've already told me that, correct?"
"As of the date of the email, that would've been correct",Trell said.
When pressed by Panish, Trell said that Phillips' statement that Murray had been checked out, along with the executive's claim that the doctor 'does not need this gig' were inaccurate.
"I don't know where Randy's understanding or impression comes from", Trell said.
Trell testified that Phillips might have been "misinformed" or simply was stating his impression of the Las Vegas cardiologist
Panish: "But no one at AEG checked Dr. Murray to see if he was successful or not, isn't that true?"
Trell: "Yes"
Panish then asked several pointed questions about whether Shawn Trell agreed with Phillips telling Ortega they'd checked Murray out. One of Panish's questions was whether Trell thought Phillips' email was 'acceptable conduct'
Panish called Phillips' statement "a flat out lie" and asked Trell whether he agreed with it or if it signified how AEG did business. Trell said he didn't know what Phillips thought he knew when he wrote the message.
"I know this statement is not accurate, but you'd have to speak with Mr. Phillips about what he thought or meant in saying it," Trell said.

Panish: "That's a flat out lie, isn't it sir?"
Trell: "I don't know what Mr. Phillips intended to say, this should be a question to him"
Panish: "You don't know if he was successful or facing bankruptcy, did you?"
Trell: "No"
Trell: "I know the statement is not accurate. You have to speak with Mr. Phillips about what he meant to say"
Panish: "Do you agree with the CEO of your company making untrue statements?"
Trell: "I don't know that he didn't know it wasn't true when he said it"
Trell said Phillips never told him that he checked Dr. Murray out. As to reference in Phillips' email about Dr. Murray being unbiased, ethical, not needing this gig, Trell said it was Phillips' impressions. He said AEG typically only runs background checks on candidates applying for full-time jobs with AEG, not independent contractors.
Panish: "Isn't it true AEG Live does not do background check on independent contractors?"
Trell: "That's true"
Trell said that no one from AEG interviewed Dr. Murray because he was an independent contractor.
"Did anyone from AEG ever at any time interview Dr. Murray", asked Brian Panish
"No", Trell replied.
Panish showed a document used by AEG entitled "Disclosure and Authorization to Conduct Background Check". Doc is used for employment, promotion, retention, contingent or the rate staffing, consulting, sub-contract work, or volunteer work. Panish asked if there was any reason why Dr. Murray was not given a background check.
"He wasn't an employee, he wasn't applying for a full time position with the company," Trell explained.
Trell said theoretically they could've asked to check Dr. Murray's background and credit.
AEG Cross
Jessica Bina began her examination by showing the letter submitted by AEG's CFO to the Estate of Michael Jackson for their review. She asked Shawn Trell about the estimate presented to Jackson's estate that included Murray's $300k fees. She asked why it was prepared. Shawn Trell said it was done at the request of the estate. He said Jackson's estate wanted to know state of tour finances when Jackson died. Trell said the report was requested by the Estate after a series of meetings after Michael's death.
"The purpose of the meeting was to wind up the business affairs of the tour due to Michael's death", Trell said. "It was my understating in June Tohme was back in the picture in some capacity. I'm not sure which, Mr. DiLeo was in it too," Trell said
Bina: "Is there any request for payment?"
Trell: "No, there's no demand for payment, it's for review"
Stebbins Bina asked about the inclusion of Murray's fee in the document. Bina showed the report that was attached to the letter. Murray's fee on the document had a footnote. Trell read what that footnote said, and explained why estate wasn't asked for Murray's fee. Next to "Management Medical" there's a reference to footnote 3.
Note 3: 'Contract is not signed by Michael Jackson and such signature was condition precedent to any payment obligation' - Footnote on Murray fee.
Trell testified Webking, the CFO for AEG, did not ask Michael's Estate for payment of Dr. Murray's salary
"You testified you were somewhat confused (by the inclusion of the $300,000)?", Bina asked Trell as she projected the list, dated July 17, 2009, on a screen for jurors.
"Do you see there's something in parentheses?', Stebbins Bina asked, zooming in to blow up a footnote from AEG CFO Frederick Webking that stated Michael Jackson never signed Murray's contract, so its terms were not enforceable.
"Is Mr. Webking asking the estate to pay?", Stebbins Bina asked Trell. "No", he replied, explaining that upon reflection he believed Mr. Webking was just being 'thorough' by including the $300,000 as a budgeted cost.
"Did Mr. Webking make a mistake as you thought yesterday?",she asked.
"No, he did not", Trell answered
Second report made to the Estate on 9/18/09, there was no amount next to management medical. Stebbins Bina then showed a Sept. 2009 report of This Is It's finances to Michael Jackson's estate. Murray's fee is not listed in that document
Trell went through his job description with AEG. He said he has five lawyers in his department and has worked on thousands of agreements. Trell explained what PMK is -- Person Most Knowledgeable, identified by the company to testify on its behalf. Trell said he didn't know about all the topics he was designated, so he had to do some studying and interviews with people
As to Ortega's contract, Trell said he was aware of a string of emails being at least a part of the original agreement with Kenny.
"When we were done here yesterday, I looked at Kenny Ortega's original agreement," Trell said.
Trell noted he hadn't looked at Ortega's agreement since it was entered into in 2009. Before the afternoon break, Trell and jury were shown Kenny Ortega's tour agreement. It was signed in April 2009. The agreement was three pages of legalese, with several pages of emails attached that confirmed the terms. The first three pages included some paragraphs that described who owned the rights to This Is It content. A large number of emails are part of the agreement as exhibits. Trell said he recalled the emails exchange and admitted again not being proud of forgetting the cover contract portion. Bina showed Ortega's executed contract with everyone's signature on it. Trell said Kenny Ortega was paid after his contract was signed.
Trell, Phillips and Kathy Jorrie were involved in drafting and negotiating the contract with Michael Jackson. For MJ, Trell said Dr. Tohme Tohme and attorneys Dennis Hawk and Peter Lopez represented him. He said there were multiple drafts.
"It's my understanding they were talking to, or at least receiving offers from, a competitive of ours, Live Nation," Trell said.
Trell also said that before signing an agreement with AEG, Jackson had been considering a tour offer from its main competitor, Live Nation.
Bina showed the jury the final tour agreement. Trell said he went to MJ's home at Carolwood to sign it. Upon arrival, Trell said Mr. Jackson got up from where he was seated, and said 'Hi, welcome, I'm Michael." Trell said it was pretty funny, since he was a very distinct person. Trell said they shook hands, he had a good firm handshake and his voice was not what people think
"He popped up, came over, introduced himself, was very cordial, there was a real positive energy, good vibe in the room," Trell said. "He seemed genuinely enthused," Trell added. "He had the contract in front of him, said he read every page, seemed very enthused." Trell said they all signed it and Mr. Jackson was really keen on the 3-D stuff, that he was already down the road in his mind. "I was probably there just a little less than an hour. And that was the only time I met him," Trell recalled.
Bina discussed the contract for the tour agreement:
A first class performance by Artist at each show on each of the approved itineraries. Contract:
Artist shall perform no less than 80 minutes at each show, and the maximum show length for each show shall be 3.5 hours. Artist shall approve a sufficient number of shows on itineraries proposed by promoter or producer as to recoup the advances made.
Trell said compensation was agreed on 90-10 split. Artist received 90% of what's defined contingent compensation.
Trell explained to jury how concerts get paid for. One scenario is artist pays for production up front. A second scenario is that the promoter gives artist an advance, and then they use the money to put together the show. The third option, Trell said, is the artist pays someone like AEG Live to produce and promote the show, with costs to come out of their pay. Trell called the second and third option like an interest-free loan. In Jackson's case, AEG agreed to a 90/10 split of show's proceeds. Jackson would have received the 90% portion, Trell said. Jackson was also on the hook for a 5% production fee
AEG Live was promoter & producer.
"We advanced the money necessary to mount the tour," Trell explained. "It's interest free money".
Trell testified that Jackson's advance, which covered his $100,000-a-month rent on his mansion and a $3-million payment to settle a lawsuit that would free up his performance rights, was considered a loan to be paid back to AEG.
Part of the advance was to pay off the settlement agreement of $3 million in London court. The underlying dispute was that a company owned the rights for Jackson's live performance.
"The rights needed to be freed up," Trell said.
The advances were to be paid back to AEG Live before the split of revenue. Production Advances were capped to $7.5 million. Contract:
Artist was responsible for all the production costs in excess of the cap and had to reimburse promoter.
"Michael Jackson was known to have very elaborate productions," Trell said. "Production values can get significant, for lack of a better word, it really depends on how many bells and whistles they want," Trell said.
Trell said AEG would not advance money without the artist requesting it.
Trell said it's not only typical and customary, but standard and artist needs to secure either non-appearance or cancellation insurance. Their interest in the policy, Trell said, was to cover the advances and production costs incurred with the production of the show.
"If the were no obligations to AEG, the payout would go back to the artist", Trell explained, "It just recoups our loan made to the artist."
Trell was also asked about elements of tour insurance policies and an agreement with former manager Tohme Tohme. Jackson's contract called for him to represent to AEG that he didn't have any health conditions that would keep him from performing.
Contract:
Artistco hereby represents and warrants that artist does not possess any known health conditions, injuries or ailments that would reasonable be expected to interfere with Artist's first class performance at each of the shows during the term
Oh Tohme's $100k per month agreement, Trell was shown a January contract that Jackson signed to pay that amount. However, Trell said Tohme's agreement was predicated on Jackson getting tour cancellation insurance by a certain date. Deadline passed and by that point Tohme was no longer Jackson's manager, so he wasn't entitled to be paid his monthly fee.
January 24, 2009 -- agreement entered with Dr. Tohme Tohme. Trell said Michael was involved and signed this agreement. "This agreement was entered into January 26, Trell testified.
"There are conditions that needed to be met before any payment could be made."
One of the the conditions was placement of non-appearance insurance, Trell said. That placement was done in late April, early May. In May, AEG received letter from MJ saying Tohme didn't rep him anymore.
"No payments were ever made under this agreement," Trell explained.

2024.05.21 14:50 Zoliv13 [H] Bundle games from Humble/Fanatical/IG [W] Wishlist/Offers (Update 21/05/2024)

Hello,
I'd like some fair exchange for those, i'm willing to put more than one game against a game i really want, depends on the offer. I could accept Paypal, but that's not my goal (just getting games i'd like to play). I might want to keep something in those lists, i also have some other Humble and Fanatical games i'm not sure i'll play, so they might appear one day (could be money for an exchange if you have something from my wishlist, don't hesitate to ask). I'm from Europe, that might matter for Keys or gift links. Also, i have many games now, and a lot to do yet, so i might be very picky, even for games on my wishlist (it's more a list for interesting games, that i might want in an undetermined future if i have time).
(HB Unrevealed Key = i have it still unrevealed, but will provide a key, considering the Humble view on trading games)
For people living in France, i also have some old games in boxes that i can send by post, ask me if interested.

2024.05.21 14:45 DueCombination9805 What job would utilize my skill set best?

34 yo female here and exploring different career options. Currently working at a corporate chain restaurant as a Team Lead. Have worked in a variety of food service settings including fine dining, nursing home kitchen, spiritual retreat center, authentic French cafe, and BBQ joint. Also have experience with nonprofit organizations, housekeeping, and retail.
Food service experience: Bussing, dishwashing, prep, line (breakfast cook, fryer, sandwich builder), some baking/pastry experience, catering prep, buffet service, cashiering
Human Services experience: Volunteer coordinating (3 years' total) with a focus on managing community service volunteers; worked at a residential mental health facility; worked in recovery; worked in a group home with individuals with developmental disabilities/mental illness diagnoses; med passing; certified in CPR and First Aid; former Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels employee
Housekeeping: Housekeeping for larger hotel chain as well as other smaller resorts; Housekeeping Supervisor for a lodge in WY; private home-cleaning
I have an Associate's Degree in Human Services because my original intent was to go into social work. I like to be active (moving and doing, not a gym-goer!) and engaged with people, so being confined to an office or stuck in front of a computer screen is not for me.
I work best either alone, closely with a boss I respect, or a small team. At my current job, one of my favorite things is working with younger people (18-25). I like people and making connections, I'm a problem solvefixer, I like things to be in order (clean, organized, running smoothly, etc), and I'm great at helping people find resources.
I've had people suggest Public Relations, Human Resources, middle management, or office manager. Thoughts???

2024.05.21 14:12 Disastrous-Run-7657 I don't want to be a nurse anymore

I used to like being a nurse. It wasn't just a job; it was a calling. The idea of helping people, being a beacon of comfort and care during their most vulnerable moments, filled me with purpose. Back home, every day brought its own set of challenges and rewards, and I thrived in that environment.
But then, I moved to Austria to further my studies and work. At first, the excitement of a new country, a new culture, and new opportunities overshadowed everything else. I thought this would be the next big step in my career, a chance to learn and grow. Little did I know, it would also bring a wave of disillusionment.
My first employer in Austria was a far cry from what I had experienced before. The management was indifferent, the workload overwhelming, and the support system almost nonexistent. I tried to brush it off as just a bad start, something that would get better with time. But as days turned into weeks and weeks into months, the heaviness in my chest only grew.
The nursing practices here were also different, almost alien to what I had been trained in. The methods, the protocols, even the way patients were treated – it all felt foreign. I struggled to adapt, constantly feeling like I was falling short, no matter how hard I tried.
Friends and family told me it was just an adjustment period. They said I needed to give it more time, that eventually, I'd find my footing. I wanted to believe them. I repeated those words to myself like a mantra, hoping they'd drown out the growing unease inside me.
But deep down, I knew the truth. Something was gnawing at me, a persistent, uncomfortable feeling that I couldn't shake off. I didn't like being a nurse anymore. The passion that once drove me was now a distant memory, replaced by a sense of dread every morning as I put on my scrubs.
It was a painful realization, one I didn't want to admit even to myself. Nursing had been such a big part of my identity, and now, it felt like I was losing a piece of who I was. But no matter how much I tried to convince myself otherwise, I couldn't ignore the truth any longer.
Maybe it was time to find a new path, something that reignited that spark within me. It was terrifying to think about starting over, but staying in a profession that no longer brought me joy was even more frightening. I needed to listen to that voice inside me, the one that was telling me it was okay to move on, to find something that made me feel alive again.

2024.05.21 13:43 gardencurses MDPI is the absolute worst company to work for

I hope this is an appropriate post for this subreddit. I am seriously nearing my wit’s end with this company and would strongly recommend against working for them. They’re on the borderline of being a predatory journal and have a controversies section as long as your arm on Wikipedia, so perhaps it should be unsurprising that they’re so exploitative. Because their objective is to pump out as many papers (and special issues) as possible, they routinely accept papers far below a level of writing I would expect from a first year undergraduate. These papers pass through an initial review phase before being assigned, but it’s clear from the remarks that many of the reviewers do not speak fluent English either, and the process really only serves as a rubber stamp. After receiving these papers, which cover an extremely broad range of highly technical subject matter, editors have only 18 hours to return the completed assignment, down from 24 hours mere months ago. What’s more, all copyeditors are subject to monthly quality checks wherein any editorial slips made during the month, no matter the abject quality of the original work, are graded against them, with the implicit threat of termination should you fall below a certain threshold. Furthermore, any communication with their English office takes almost as long as the assignment window itself, making requests for reassignment and the return of papers that meet the extremely high threshold for “extensive editing” stressful and time-consuming. Frankly, all of this would tolerable if they paid an even remotely acceptable rate. However, their starting rate in Canada is CAD 0.0056/word, which was only recently raised to a whopping CAD 0.0058/word in light of the substantial reduction in the assignment window. This means that a workload of 150,000 words a month, roughly the equivalent of three novellas, is barely enough to earn what by all accounts is some of the cheapest rent in the country, which I haven’t even been able to manage the past three months. If I recall correctly, this is a company valued on the order of billions of dollars. All of this is to say that, if you are a new editor and can afford not to, do NOT give this company your time or energy; they are a discredit to the entire field and extremely exploitative.
To close, I will note that I have often heard on this subreddit that the first year of freelancing is the hardest. Counting my work with an individual client, I’ve been at it for two years now. Does it get any better?? I have been trying to pivot toward more individual clients, as it is clear I will not be securing any editorial internships with publishers in the forseeable future. I am also hoping to secure some form of basic copyediting accreditation on top of my degrees, but that costs money I am simply not earning at the moment. I am passionate about working with words and really want to make a decent career of it, but I feel like my current employment prospects are stifling that passion.

2024.05.21 13:15 kapykapybara What are some potential options for nurses who want a career change?

Hello people!
I am an equivalent of a Licensed Practical Nurse in Australia (they call it something different). I have worked at a hospital and I am specialized in Cardiology and Hematology. I have also worked on the frontline during the peak of the pandemic.
Now I am considering a career change as I don't think nursing is for me, but I am really unsure of what to do. I do like health science and medicine, but I am also open to trying different things. I speak Mandarin, English fluently and French to a professional working level if that matters. I also don't mind doing further studies to change fields. In fact, I did a graduate certificate of Computer Science while working as a nurse just to see what it's like. But it seems like it's a really rough time to enter the industry at the moment.
I am leaving Australia. I am considering moving to Canada or Europe. I would just like to hear from ex-nurses who have changed career and maybe have pursued a different career somewhere abroad. What did you end up doing and how are things going so far? Are you happy that your made the move? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

2024.05.21 12:13 lorcan-mt Dustin Luca Leaving Salem News

Posted on his Facebook page that he is moving to a Communications job at SSU. Thanks for everything Dustin!
On Sept. 11, 2001, a series of terrorist attacks set me on a path to do three things: to correct misinformation as a life goal, to enter a field that in some way improves people’s understanding of their world, and to earn bipartisan respect in how I do it.
I’ve written an untold number of stories across 23 years and been taken to places new and old, familiar and fresh. I've interviewed rock legends, presidential candidates (well... one), and along the way met unforgettable sources ranging from a baby battling neuroblastoma to an elderly Lawrence woman growing a potato in her apartment and naming it like a son.
Of course, this path has had its drawbacks. I was told early on that “being a reporter doesn’t pay well,” and that I was entering a “dead industry” fresh from its collapse in 2008. But, after my first time talking to a doggie daycare that made the Today Show and becoming friends with a cat, I realized the career also paid in memories... amply... and there’s really no place I’ve worked that has created more memories for me than Salem. It’s the beat I’ve worked the longest as a reporter; the most recent Halloween marked my 10th in the city.
It also marked my last.
On Oct. 24, seven days before Halloween, I turned 40. I did so without having yet saved any money for retirement, and while working at least 70 hours per week at two to three jobs for the last several years. The combined paychecks still put me a good bit below median household income for the area — something that comes to mind every time I see a comment online that talks about how people should try living where they can afford to.
There's also a dark side to journalism that has emerged in the last half-decade, one that I’d argue doesn’t get enough attention. It’s one of the few industries that is entirely private while also being fully public-facing — journalists are effectively public officials, without the protections and benefits of being public officials. We take a lot of shots from readers, some of whom would delight in us being out of the job and financially destroyed, and we just chuckle and move on with our day.
For the dark side, there’s also the light. In some parts of the real world, journalists are thanked for their service as if we’re active military. I’ve been compared to nurses working the pandemic, held up as a leader stabilizing a maligned society, and invited to share my perspective and experiences with high school classrooms, podcasts, even Boy Scout troops.
Being a reporter pays well in the memories you collect along the way (thankfully they aren't subject to a tax). To that end, I’ve at times felt wealthy for having the privilege of covering a city like Salem — even with its dark underbelly actively arguing that I shouldn’t have a job or be allowed to exist.
With this double-edged sword equipped for so long, I knew I’d put it down at some point. When thinking about the kind of job it would take to leave the news industry, I found there was really only one that kept coming up in my mind: an opening in Communications at my Alma Mater, UNH. That would honestly be a dream... a position like that opening at a college campus I knew so well. To my fortune, that exact position opened in my backyard toward the end of 2023, on a college campus I know just as well as UNH — if not better.
In early June, I’ll be switching careers as I assume the role of Associate Director of External Communications at Salem State University.
I loved my college experience and always joked that if I won the lottery, I'd go back to school and get a degree in physics, do something nutty with string theory. But really, there’s something about the college environment where I’m most comfortable: everybody is there to learn and grow, and, from each graduate, society receives an opportunity for transformation. The feeling you get walking through a space like that can't really be replicated anywhere else... At least that's the fuzzy feeling I get when walking onto a college campus.
It’s hard to imagine leaving the only world I’ve known professionally and no longer covering the city I love, but I’m not going that far. I’m still working in the same beautiful city and would love for you to say “hey” when you see me out doing whatever. You may also see my byline from time to time, and I think I'd even like to continue doing “the spreadsheet” each night polls are open.
But, for now, this bro is going off the record to go back to school.

2024.05.21 10:41 Diligent_Ad_1762 My guilt is absolutely eating me alive

I don’t know why I’m writing this or what I hope to accomplish in doing so, but it’s 4am and I cannot sleep.
Before I went into high school I made a plan of what I wanted to accomplish. It was a “this is going to happen no matter what” sort of plan. The plan b in my eyes was “don’t screw up plan a.” Anyways, I wanted to be an astronaut. I had plans to major in astrophysics at MIT and work my way up to a career at NASA. I had dozens of programs, extracurriculars, clubs, etc planned out for my resume. It was so exciting.
Except, freshman year of high school I developed multiple medical issues (migraines, GERD, fainting, etc) that led to many struggles with my attendance and general performance in school. I had little emotional support at school and rumors were constantly floating around about me and why I was constantly being sent home from the nurse everyday. Pictures of me crying with stained tears were posted to various Instagram accounts with captions like “crybaby” and “pathetic.” It’s safe to say it was absolute hell.
Sophomore year I started off doing alright, but around November my health declined again. It wasn’t until February that I switched to an online academy. It was great, but here’s where I feel the guilt;
It’s been about a year now that I’ve been attending an online school. I’m a junior now and I like it, definetely a lot better than my old public school, but I can’t help but feel so guilty about not just sucking it up when I had the chance. I had the opportunity to exceed and complete all those things that could have placed me into MIT. Yes, it’s a hard school to get into, but there absolutely zero chance now. At least beforehand I would’ve had a semi shot. I hate myself so much for not pushing harder for my future. I just feel so incredibly dumb.

2024.05.21 09:43 BuckeyeReason Indiana has a problem: a lack of nurses; abortion restrictions may compound the problem

Even before Indiana abortion restrictions took effect last year, Indiana in 2022 had a lower ratio (9.86) of nurses to 1,000 population than neighboring states of Kentucky ( 9.97), Michigan (10.11), and Ohio (11.09). Indiana's new abortion restrictions may result in existing and prospective nurses choosing other careers, leaving Indiana, or becoming traveling nurses. Young women especially are conscious how abortion restrictions may impact their health needs personally, let alone professionally as nurses.
https://nursejournal.org/articles/the-us-nursing-shortage-state-by-state-breakdown/
As noted in the above article, nursing shortages are a national problem to be aggravated by an expected increase in retirees as well as increased demand as Baby Boomers age and require more medical services.
<< A lack of nurse educators keeps nursing schools from being able to admit enough students to address the shortfall. A shortage of nurses means more burnout and more nurses choosing to leave the profession, contributing to the shortage.
In addition, the aging of Baby Boomers means that more nurses are retiring at a time when an aging population has a greater need for healthcare providers. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the nursing shortage.>>
Many Indiana women rely on medication abortions aided by doctors practicing remotely in other states, who often rely on "shield laws" in those states to protect them from prosecution in states with abortion restrictions. If anti-abortion states are successful in blocking these shield laws and restricting telemedicine abortions, Indiana may become even less attractive to young women concerned with their own reproductive rights.
<< A clash is looming between anti-abortion red states and the blue state telemedicine shield laws trying to preserve abortion access.
More than a dozen states have laws shielding medical providers and others from out-of-state investigations and prosecutions regarding abortions and gender affirming care. But six states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, California, Vermont and Washington — have gone even further.
Those shield laws offer protection for doctors, nurses and other practitioners who prescribe and send abortion pills to people living in states that ban or severely restrict abortion.>>
https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/4671299-abortion-bans-clash-shield-laws/
<< According to a new report from the abortion-rights research group Society of Family Planning, nearly 8,000 people per month in states with bans or severe restrictions were getting medication abortion from clinicians operating under shield law protections from October through December 2023. >>
The personal turmoil of nursing in states with abortion bans and restrictions also lessens the desirability of those states not only for nursing recruits, but also existing nurses.
<< National articles provide a look at how some nurses and physicians are quitting or moving because they cannot handle the trauma they see when women are denied health- and life-saving abortion care during a pregnancy crisis. For instance, Leah Wilson, a Texas nurse, had to watch her pregnant patient for days as the woman’s infection worsened and drew closer to sepsis because the fetus still registered a heartbeat when the woman’s water broke at 19 weeks of pregnancy. The nurse said, “You know what? I’m not doing this anymore,” and she left her job. Wilson had worked with high-risk pregnancy patients before and provided them with support for fetal loss, but she had never seen patients denied standard medical care until after Roe v. Wade was overturned.>>

https://www.nursingworld.org/practice-policy/work-environment/health-safety/srh-advocacy/
Shortages of nurses increase the workplace burdens and stress for remaining nurses. This can compromise the quality of healthcare for patients, as does Indiana laws providing for lax continuing education requirements and lowered training supervision quality for student nurses.
Unlike neighboring states, Indiana has no continuing education requirements for RNs or LPNs.
https://www.nursingce.com/ceu-requirements/indiana
https://www.nursingcenter.com/continuing-education/ce-state-requirements
<< Estimates predict that Indiana would need an additional 5,000 nurses by 2031, equal to graduating an additional 1,300 nurses each year until that time, according to the Indiana Hospital Association. >>
https://indianacapitalchronicle.com/2024/02/12/indiana-has-a-problem-a-lack-of-nurses-and-lawmakers-are-trying-to-help/
To increase the supply of nurses, a new bill would ease the requirements for nurses supervising student nurses.
<< While most of the bill received glowing support in testimony, one issue was a bit of a sticking point for nurses working in clinical settings: language striking minimums for preceptors, or licensed nurses supervising students during rotation. Previously, preceptors needed 18 months of experience before they could be drafted to teach and mentor the next generation.
The new law has no minimum requirement.
Rep. Cindy Ledbetter, a nurse practitioner with a doctorate, cautioned against the move, saying unprepared nurses would be given to students to address a shortage.
“My concern is you have a brand new nurse and the hospital requires them to precept and they’re not ready to translate what they’ve learned in the classroom themselves into a real-world scenario,” said Ledbetter, R-Newburgh. “(I’m concerned) that we’re going to … lose more nurses on the other end.”>>
