Betting record 2024: 118-73
Prediction record 2024: 134-76

Surprisingly not a bad card I would say for an apex card. Glad that’s out of the way and June seems to have many exciting fights lined up so I am excited for those. There are 5 UFC events next month and I am looking forward to predicting all the fights. Also you can find me at Tapology at “KnockoutWatcher”. Moving on to UFC 302 next. In this card there are a few fights that I am really unsure so I will not be putting 2 units on those fights unlike the other fights where I am pretty confident of my picks.

Main Card Predictions:
Lightweight: Islam Makhachev (c) vs. Dustin Poirier
Let’s get this out of the way. Imagine if during round 1 at UFC 299, Islam Makachev was in BSD’s position on the ground. What would have happened? Most likely he would have gotten the submission against Dustin and finished that fight in round 1. I am going to say it like it is. Dustin Poirier has very little chance of beating Makhachev. Only Makhachev can cost himself he title by underestimating Dustin or doing something stupid like what BSD did which was to brawl in Dustin’s pocket.
Islam Makhachev is definitely the better grappler and has a clear path to victory in this fight His control on the ground and ability to submit opponents are top-notch. This is complimented by his striking as we saw when he knocked out Volk in his last fight. Now Dustin Poirier has a window of opportunity if Makhachev decides to brawl for some reason. Poirier does have a solid striking game and he has the ability to knock out Makhachev if it goes to a brawl. I do not understand his obsession with the guillotine and he is a fool if he decides to use that against Makhachev since Khabib has already exposed that move. I do hope the Makhachev learned his lesson about not playing with fire from his one and only loss against Adriano Martins. If Makhachev goes for a grappling heavy gameplan right away he should have no problem getting the job done.
Prediction: Islam Makhachev to win (2 units bet)

Middleweight: Sean Strickland vs. Paulo Costa
There is an argument that could be made that Sean Strickland should have remained champ and should be defending the title instead of fighting Paulo Costa right now. Despite his controversial outspoken presence on social media, Sean Strickland is actually a solid conservative fighter in the cage. He displayed impressive striking defense against Adesanya and he tends to rely on the jab to keep the forward pressure on his opponent to outstrike his opponents and get the decision win. I think he is a very solid fighter who has proven to be able to hang with the elites in his division
His opponent Paulo Costa brings explosive power and aggression in striking. If he does show up, he is has shown that he is a good fighter and he did have a competitive fight against Robert Whitaker despite losing the bout. Costa could definitely give Strickland a bunch of problems in this fight and this could a tricky matchup for the latter. I am going to have to go with Strickland though because it seems that he has made that leap in this career to be a contender in the division. My estimate is that he is a slightly better striker than Costa especially having the edge when it comes to defense. As long as he is not mentally distracted, he should be able to jab his way to another victory here.
Prediction: Sean Strickland to win (2 units bet)

Middleweight: Kevin Holland vs. Michał Oleksiejczuk
What can I say about this fight? Kevin Holland is the most untrustworthy fighter you can put your money on because he does have the talent and ability to win fights but his motivations these days are questionable. It seems like he’s content with showing up, getting paid and putting on a show. MVP beat him at his own game in his latest fight and that was the fight that convinced me it’s not even worth putting your money on this guy. He could have resorted to more grappling where MVP was like a fish out of the water but did not show enough urgency to do so. It was the same case with the Jack Dela Madelena fight where he could have won with a bit more grappling. Honestly, I hated this fight when it was announced and I wished that this fight didn’t happen in this card.
Michał Oleksiejczuk is a gritty underdog and despite being put in his place quickly in his previous fight by Michel Pereira, I think he could stay competitive against fighters just below the top level. I am expecting this to be a close competitive fight. Initially, I was thinking of picking Holland and not betting on this card at all as I vow to never put my money on him. But after much thought, I do think that Oleksiejczuk does have a chance to win. He could keep the fight competitive and close enough for it to go to the decision because Holland is probably going to fool around and not take this fight seriously enough to get the finish. So I am going to take a chance on Oleksiejczuk even if it is a low confidence pick.
Prediction: Michał Oleksiejczuk to win

Heavyweight: Jailton Almeida vs. Alexander Romanov
Jailton Almeida is a wet blanket. Let’s call it what it is we know what he is going to do in the cage. He is going to wrestlefuck his opponent throughout all the rounds and either find the submission or hold down his opponent throughout the fight. Now this strategy finally failed against a good wrestler with good takedown defense like Blaydes who hammerfisted his way to a knockout victory. But I think Almeida’s gameplan should work for any heavyweight outside of the top 5, especially those with poor grappling skills. I understand neutral fans must hate these fighters but as a bettor, I love fighters like him, Gamrot and those wrestlers from the Caucasus because they have a very clear gameplan and path to victory even if their style is aesthetically repulsive. I could care less if they put me to sleep while watching their fights as long as I win.
I do not think that Alexander Romanov is good enough to stop Almeida from taking him down and hugging him for 15 straight minutes. Romanov is probably better than Almeida on the feet but it would not matter if the latter can outgrapple him. My main concern is the quick turnaround for Almeida in this fight as he was only knocked out cold like 2 months ago. But I really have no confidence in Romanov’s takedown defense so as long as Almeida proceed cautiously, he should be able to lay and pray his way to victory here.
Prediction: Jailton Almeida to win (2 units bet)

Welterweight: Randy Brown vs. Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos
Randy Brown is known for his athletic prowess and versatile striking skills. He has a significant reach advantage in most of his fights, which he uses effectively to manage distance and land impactful strikes. Brown is also competent on the ground, though his defense against very aggressive grapplers can sometimes be a vulnerability.
Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos, brings a dynamic and unorthodox striking style. He is aggressive, often seeking to press the action with spinning kicks and powerful looping punches. While exciting and potentially devastating, this approach can leave him open to counter-strikes. His ground game is solid, though not the primary focus of his gameplan. Santos is a tough gritty underdog for sure as shown by his previous fight against Rinat Fakhretdinov which ends in a draw.
This is going to be a tough close fight but I can see Randy Brown edging this one out by taking advantage of his reach. This is a tough fight to call but in a striking battle, Randy should win this one.
Prediction: Randy Brown to win (2 units bet)

Preliminary Card Predictions:
Middleweight: César Almeida vs. Roman Kopylov
Ok we know Kopylov has excellent striking abilities. He is quick, technical and has finished his last 4 wins by knockouts. His latest loss came from Anthony Hernandez who outgrappled him and submitted him in a quick fashion. But if we are talking about striking abilities here, I believe that Cesar Almeida is on a different level than Kopylov. This guy has fought Alex Pereira to a decision 3 times in kickboxing and won one of them which has to be the most impressive thing in his resume. The fact that he could hang on with Pereira in kickboxing is a testament to his striking skills and what is even more impressive is that he passed his big test against a pure grappler in Dylan Budka in his previous fight by using good takedown defence which shows he has been working hard to adjust to MMA.
I do not understand why Kopylov is the favourite here because as good as his striking is in MMA, Almeida is just a different beast when it comes to striking and had made a name for himself in kickboxing. I doubt Kopylov can rely on his grappling either because if Budka could not kept Almeida down what chance does Kopylov has? Almeida is my pick here and I think he will outstrike Kopylov throughout the 3 rounds.
Prediction: César Almeida to win (2 units bet)

Lightweight: Grant Dawson vs. Joe Solecki
Grant Dawson excels with his aggressive grappling and ability to control opponents on the mat. His relentless pace and transition game often overwhelm his adversaries. His chin can be a little suspect as shown by Bobby Green knocking him out in round 1. His striking is still a work in progress developing but it should not be a factor in this matchup. Dawson also has the ability to maintain high pressure wrestling constantly.
Joe Solecki is also a skilled grappler himself with a strong foundation in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He has a knack for finding submission opportunities and excels in technical ground exchanges. His striking is kind of horrible too so he cant rely on that to hurt Dawson.
In this grappler vs grappler matchup, I favour Dawson since he has shown that he is the superior grappler with his wrestling ability. He should be able to outgrapple Solecki here and pressure him on the ground. Dawson should be able to get back in the win column with this favourable matchup.
Prediction: Grant Dawson to win (2 units bet)

Welterweight: Philip Rowe vs. Jake Matthews
This is a matchup between 2 mediocre fighters. Philip Rowe does have the knockout power with 3 UFC knockouts in his career out of 5 fights but he does tend to lose by volume and consequently the decision. He lost to Neil Magny which kind of shows what level he is at. His ground game is kind of suspect so it seems that if he does not find the knockout against his opponent, he will lose.
Jake Matthews, on the other hand, is a well-rounded fighter with a strong foundation in wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He excels at controlling opponents on the ground and has developed a more polished striking game over the years. Matthews' main problem is his fight iq or lack thereof which has held him back from reaching his full potential. Fighters with bad fight iq is exactly the type of fighters that I hate to bet on. Hard to predict this fight actually. Could be a close coin flip so I am going with the underdog for this fight because he does have finishing potential even though I am not very confident about it and Matthews is just too unreliable of a fighter to put my money on as a favourite.
Prediction: Philip Rowe to win

Welterweight: Niko Price vs. Alex Morono
Niko Price is known for his knockout power and unorthodox striking. He's capable of ending fights in an instant. But he could very well be washed up at this point. His last notable win in the last 4 years was against Alex Olivera and he has a tendency to get knocked out these days which makes his chin suspect. He often absorbs a lot of hits due to his aggressive style so perhaps his brain just can’t handle the punishment at this point of his career.
Alex Morono brings a more methodical approach to the octagon. He is a technical striker with good fundamentals and has shown improvements in his grappling game. Morono's consistent pace and ability to fight smart under pressure serve him well against unpredictable fighters. Alex Morono himself is a UFC veteran who seems to have hit his ceiling in this sport.
This matchup is a rematch from their 2017 fight where Price knocked out Morono but the result was overturned to a No Contest. I think Morono takes this rematch because Niko Price seems to have aged worse than him based on his latest performances and I think Morono will avenge his loss
Prediction: Alex Morono to win (2 units bet)

Early Preliminary Card Predictions:
Welterweight: Mickey Gall vs. Bassil Hafez
How the hell is Mickey Gall still in the UFC? I remember when this random dude beat CM Punk who is definitely without a doubt the worst fighter ever to step on the UFC octagon. Mickey Gall has a 7-5 record even with that free win and it seems that he had leveraged that famous victory into a decent UFC career. Ok Gall does have a decent ground game to get by but I am still shocked that he has survived this far in the UFC. Bassil Hafez meanwhile is a very interesting prospect. He had a competitive split decision loss against Jack Della Madalena, a loss which has aged better considering how good his opponent is. Hafez has a good grappling ability as well and I think it would be a huge upset if Gall can somehow pull off a win against a fighter like Hafez at this stage of his career. I am going to pick Hafez here judging by his debut performance in the UFC. He seems to be a fighter with good potential and I think the UFC is feeding Gall to him to boost his resume as well as for taking the previous fight on a short notice.
Prediction: Bassil Hafez to win (2 units bet)

Women's Bantamweight: Ailín Pérez vs. Joselyne Edwards
This is going to be one hell of a cat fight. These two ladies have a bad blood from fighting backstage at UFC fight night Allen vs Craig last November and Edwards did gave Perez a black eye despite getting choked out by Perez’s coach. This is a hilarious way to open the card and I am going with Joselyne Edwards here. Not sure why she is this big of an underdog when I think these two fighters are both mediocre. But my pick is mostly a bet against another fighter who is an adult content creator. As I mention consistently, I am always inclined to pick against female fighters who are active on OF. Perez could probably have made more money on that platform by now than from her fights and at what point does fighting becomes the side hustle and not the main job anymore for these creators? It’s similar to the McGregor effect where a fighter basically makes a lot more money from another source of income that maybe they aren’t as motivated to take their fighting career seriously anymore. Besides Edwards did gave Perez a black eye despite fighting 2 on 1 so I like her odds as the underdog here.
Prediction: Joselyne Edwards to win (2 units bet)

Flyweight: Andre Lima vs. Mitch Raposo.
Andre Lima went viral after getting bitten by his opponent in his previous fight and it was kind of hilarious he would get a tattoo around his bite mark. That aside, Lima did show really good striking skills with powerful punches even though it seems that his ground game seems suspect based on his UFC debut. Mitch Raposo is making his debut on a short notice with a 9-1 record but if you look closely at the record of his opponents, he has been fighting jobbers to pad his stats. Maybe there is really something up with the prospects from the regionals in Northeastern USA. It seems that these regional fighters are getting fed a steady diet of jobbers to make them look good. Raposo lost to Jake Hadley in DWAC who is a mediocre fighter. I think picking Andre Lima is a no brainer here because at least we have seen him put up a decent striking performance in his UFC debut and maybe his good fortune will continue.
Prediction: Andre Lima to win (2 units bet)

PSA before we get started – I’m probably going to struggle to keep my Sunday release schedule across the next few months. I’ve got holidays and a house move in the pipeline, so my free time is going to be dipping a significant amount. I’ll still be posting, but don’t freak out if these start coming out on a Monday/Tuesday for a bit. Sunday is always the aim though so once everything’s sorted I’ll be back to my regular schedule.
As always, scroll down for UFC 302 Breakdowns. The following is just a recap of last event’s results.
~UFC Vegas 92 (PREVIOUS CARD)~
Staked: 16.25u
Profit/Loss: -4.87u
Parlay Suggestions: 3-2
After landing two great underdog bets on Bellator, I watch my -120 bet on Piera Rodriguez (who closed at -225 FFS) end via the lowest bit of IQ I’ve ever seen…and I knew it was all going downhill from there. Combine that with another bad beat submission being fully locked up at the end of a round (that’s happened at least three times to me this year), and it very easily could have been a winning event. COULD.
It does need to be said though that I’m really grateful for the positive messages I’ve received in the last few weeks. My bets may be atrocious lately, but it seems people are still finding value in my insight and summaries of what to expect from these fights. So as long as you’re not paying too much attention to who I am betting, there might still be some point to reading this! Maybe even to see who I’m betting so you can fade me and back the other side!

~UFC 302~
I still think the cards are suffering from 299 and 300 being so star studded…because this card is definitely missing something. The main event is huge, sure…but Randy Brown vs Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos isn’t really a main card calibre fight in my opinion. Either way, it’s better than the Apex so I don’t even care.
Let’s get into it!

~Islam Makhachev v Dustin Poirier~
Dustin Poirier’s win against Benoit St. Denis makes this one a whole lot more interesting. We’d seen him get clearly outgrappled by the likes of Khabib and Charles Oliveira before, where his overall grappling defence eventually crumbled and he found himself submitted…but things felt significantly improved against BSD. The Frenchman may be much less experienced and more aggressive/sloppy than the two aforementioned former champions, but Poirier had to fight through some tricky moments to make it to the later rounds in the first place. If he has in fact made improvements, this fight against Islam Makhachev is much more interesting than we would have expected a year ago.
That’s not to say that Makhachev is directly comparable to BSD, or even Khabib. The 155lbs champion is much more comfortable on the feet than those two, and won’t be a fish out of water at distance. That’s a key part to this fight, as the uncomfortableness of a wrestler is what forces them shoot sloppy takedown entries and ultimately gas out. Personally, I think this is what makes Makhachev better than Khabib, as he showed no issue with striking with both Volk and Charles. Both are clearly inferior to Dustin, of course…but I’m just saying that he doesn’t have to necessarily act like the standup is lava.
Anyway, Dustin is still a very dangerous fighter. He can absolutely still catch Makhachev on the feet, and he could even catch that stupid banter guillotine that he keeps going for. But I think it’s still unlikely that he does. Islam is so skilled and blending the martial arts together, his cardio is on point, and defensively he’s been class aside from that one fight against Martins. Also, that ‘jump the guilly’ narrative is not good for Dustin at all, and I would genuinely be grateful every time he attempts it if I was Islam.
Stylistics and fight analysis aside, Makhachev sits at -450 (82%) here at the betting window. In terms of his chances of winning, he absolutely deserves to be a significant favourite, but the sheer fact that Poirier’s path to victory almost exclusively needs to come from one moment of brilliance, as well as the fact he seems to have shown significant improvements…it just doesn’t make that -450 appealing at all.
So do you bet Dustin on the return? If you’re someone who likes to have a bet on every fight then I think it’s objectively a good roll of the dice, but you should realise that bet will lose more often than it wins so it’s certainly a risky one. I’d say it’s value, but given my recent history it’s not a bet I’m willing to place myself.
It’s a massive fight, but it’s no bet from me. Islam could win on the scorecards, or by KO or Submission, so I don’t really think I see any clear prop to want to target either. A roll of the dice on Dustin ITD is probably the only play I’d recommend here, but I’m not betting it myself. I’m obviously picking Makhachev to win though.
How I line this fight: Islam Makhachev -250 (75%), Dustin Poirier +250 (25%)
Bet or pass: Pass
Prop leans: None

~Sean Strickland v Paul Costa~
This one should be a lot of fun. It’s a bit of a silly fight between two of the UFC’s best memelords, but it doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense for the rankings. Not that that really seems to matter anymore. It makes even less sense that it’s 25 minutes as well. But the UFC just do what the hell they want these days.
I think this fight is pretty binary (not sure if Sean would be comfortable competing if it wasn’t!). Costa’s the hard hitter that will probably slow down in the non-title-championship rounds, whilst Strickland and his persistent jab will be happy to go 25 minutes.
So does Costa get Strickland out of there early? Maybe. We’ve seen Sean struggle with hard hitters that look to put him on the backfoot early (Pereira and Abus most recently), so Costa will definitely have his chances in the opening round against the low guard and occasional defensive lapses.
But overall I just feel like this is Strickland’s fight to lose. He’s shown that he has what it takes to go a hard 25, and his straight shots and very reliable high volume should be enough for rounds 3/4/5 to be clearly in his favour. Relying on the early finish isn’t really a particularly confident and highly replicated path, as Costa himself has shown us in recent years – having not finished any of his last five fights, including a very favourable fight against a chinny Luke Rockhold.
Therefore, Sean deserves to be a favourite on the moneyline, almost entirely because this one is a 25-minute affair and he should be styling on his Brazilian opponent by rounds 4 and 5. Strickland currently sits at -225 at the time of writing, which seems mostly accurate. There’s going to be some sketchy moments though, and a loss for that bet can come in the blink of an eye…so I don’t think there’s any meat on the bone to force a play here. I’ll take a look at Strickland 4, 5 or by Decision but unless it’s plus money I wouldn’t get involved.
I’m interested to see where the totals end up for this fight, given that the moneyline is dictated so much by how long the fight lasts. In fact, there’s a possibility that a bet on the totals could be a smarter alternative to betting the moneyline entirely. I doubt they’ll get caught out, but I’ll be keeping an eye out anyway.
Well damn, Strickland 4, 5 or Decision was available to me at +175, so I absolutely took it. That should be close to his money line, as far as I'm concerned.
How I line this fight: Sean Strickland -200 (66%), Paulo Costa +200 (33%)
Bet or pass: 2u Strickland to Win in R4, 5 or by Decision (+175)
Prop leans: See above
Live Betting Leans: A live bet on Strickland is possibly the best entry point for this fight…if he loses R1/2 you could be in with the chance of taking a bigger number on his moneyline and hoping he turns it around in the final three rounds.

~Kevin Holland v Michal Oleksiejczuk~
This is a very fun fight, and it’s nice to see Michal getting a main card opportunity on a PPV…even if it is a tricky matchup for him. He’s always been one of my favourite fighters because his style always makes fights strategic and tactical, and when he’s doing his best work he has some of the best hands in the UFC.
Lord Michal is a pretty basic fighter to break down because he’s very one-dimensional. He’s kind of caught in no-man’s land between Middleweight and Welterweight, opting to fight at the former weight class despite being pretty criminally undersized. The upside to that is that the Polish fighter can weaponise his speed whilst also benefitting from some more power, which goes very nicely with his pocket-boxing based style. Oleksiejczuk is all about pressure and fighting in the phone booth, and he has some of the best body work in the UFC today. Outside of pure striking, Oleksiejczuk shows his one-dimensional tendencies by being pretty awful in the grappling realm…which is where his lack of size at Middleweight comes back to haunt him.
Kevin Holland is a fighter that I’ve been pretty antagonistic towards since I’ve been writing on Reddit. I saw his potential right away when he joined the UFC, and bet him at reasonable prices against fighters he was clearly better than, or otherwise I bet his submission prop against fighters he was clearly superior to on the mat. He made me sweat when it took him three rounds to submit John Phillips, he made me sweat when he went to a split with GM3, he made me sweat when he went to a split with Darren Stewart. You can see where the resentment comes from. In short, my conclusion on Holland is that he is possibly the hardest fighter to trust on the roster, because he likes to fuck around inside the cage, and he can also obviously get stuck on his back.
However, I think this fight presents an opportunity for Holland to put on a great performance, because neither of those limitations should hold him back here. Lord Michal will be looking to engage with him and produce a high enough work rate that it will keep Holland active, which hopefully prevents him from taunting and chatting shit when he should be throwing strikes. Also, Michal won’t want to wrestle, and Holland would have all the answers if he even tried. So this is one of the rare fights where I think I can trust Holland not to be his own worst enemy.
This one’s going to play out almost exclusively on the feet unless Holland wants it any different, and I expect Big Mouth’s seven inch reach advantage to play a very significant part here. Michal will be getting tagged at a high clip in this fight, and those visuals don’t sit well from a round winning perspective. Furthermore, that kind of style is one that does tax Michal’s cardio, so I would expect Holland to grow into the fight the longer it lasts anyway. Of course, the lanky frame of Holland, as well as his diverse arsenal of knees in the clinch, will likely give him the advantage should he opt to clinch with Michal…which works as a very nice counter to the range that Michal is going to want to sit in. From there, Holland may even be able to set up some sort of front choke, or even blow everyone’s minds and look for a takedown himself (don’t rely on that, Holland cannot be trusted to take that path).
In short, I think Kevin Holland has all the tools to show his superiority in every aspect of the fight, he just needs to manage distance and not spend time swinging hooks in close with Oleksiejczuk. The prospect of trusting Kevin Holland (let alone at this price) is something that does not sit well with me, but I was honestly expecting him to be around -300 here. Also, as a smaller point, I’d expect Holland to have a chip on his shoulder after the embarrassing loss to MVP. I imagine getting schooled like that by a newcomer that’s gone and stolen a lot of his shine will likely hurt Holland, so he'll hopefully be looking to come back and make a statement (but who am I to predict the mentality of a cage fighter?)
Regardless, This is a fight where the minute winning, cardio, experience, durability, finishing potential, clinch and grappling upside all sit with Kevin Holland, so I expect to see him get his hand raised. At -225, I was happy to use him as a parlay piece.
How I line this fight: Kevin Holland -300 (75%), Michal Oleksiejczuk +300 (25%)
Bet or pass: 2u Kevin Holland and Grant Dawson both to Win (+110)
Prop leans: Holland ITD is always live, but he likes to showboat and play with his food too much for me to trust that.

~Jailton Almeida v Alexandr Romanov~
This is a very interesting but weird fight. Despite having recently taken his first L (which I successfully bet on, even though it didn’t play out as predicted), I still think there are some serious questions surrounding Jailton Almeida. He was looking good in the opening round against Blaydes, landing nine takedowns on potentially the division’s best wrestler. He couldn’t really secure a dominant position on Blaydes, but he was clearly in control as long as he could have kept it up for 15 minutes. Then, early in round two…he fell victim to Donkey Kong punches against the cage whilst in a single leg entry. Unsure whether there’s a point to be made about the chin of Almeida there, or not. Weird, low percentage finish.
So that’s a serious lesson that Almeida needs to respect his opponents a bit more, but honestly we saw more good than bad from Jailton in that fight. The takedowns were definitely there, as was his ability to chain them together with mat returns. Also, his striking, whilst still a bit awkward and rigid, looks to be improving, and he didn’t look as inferior to Blaydes as I was anticipating. Against Alexander Romanov here, I think it’s fair to say that Almeida doesn’t need to panic if he’s on the feet…and could probably stay there if he wanted to.
Alexandr Romanov has been one of the most entertaining circus freaks in recent years of Heavyweight MMA. I did a tonne of research into his regional career for his original debut against Marcin Tybura, where I concluded that he was a hilarious meme fighter that was feasting on some obese kebab shop locals…winning multiple fights via a fucking forearm choke as he smothered opponents with his belly. He got to the UFC and did the same ridiculous stuff, but he actually managed to do it against slightly more credible opposition (Juan Espino, Marcos Rogerio de Lima, and Blagoy Ivanov).
The most frustrating thing about Blaydes vs Almeida was that Curtis didn’t try nor manage to find any top control of his own. The big question marks about Jailton, especially in this fight, are how he handles takedown attempts and being on bottom. He’s obviously a high level grappler, but Heavyweight MMA is different kettle of fish where get ups are naturally more difficult to achieve (due to the weight on top of you, the bigger frames, and less speed/explosiveness…and the fact that most of the division look like oil barrels). Also, the limits to dexterity and flexibility mean that submissions from bottom are very rare at 265lbs. When was the last armbar or triangle choke from guard at 265lbs? Massive kudos to anyone who can actually answer that.
So basically, I think it’s impossible to know how much of a chance Alexandr Romanov has to win this fight. Should he attempt a takedown, he will be the second man behind Derrick fucking Lewis to have tried to force Jailton to the floor (which speaks to how little we know). From there, he may face a Swiss Army Knife’s equivalent of a BJJ guard, or perhaps a fighter that’s just content to lay on their back for the entire round and do sweet fuck all.
In short, I think Romanov could look anywhere from +500 to -500 in hindsight. It’s obviously unlikely to be the latter, but I cannot rule it out having seen nothing of Jailton’s defensive grappling capabilities. Chuck in some smaller intangibles surrounding Jailton returning after his first professional loss (specifically by KO), and it’s a very easy pass for me. I still expect Jailton to win, but betting the moneyline at this number is out of the question.
How I line this fight: Jailton Almeida -200 (67%), Alexandr Romanov +200 (33%)

~Randy Brown v Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos~
You guys know I love betting on Randy Brown, but I think this is a bit of a tough matchup to be overly confident in him.
Randy is usually the more well-rounded fighter and can threaten opponents with both his striking and submissions…but he’s going up against an opponent in Elizeu Zaleski that is potentially more dangerous in those areas.
If Randy wins this I think he’s going to have to use movement and straight shots to pick his way to a decision. A do-able task, but a scary one when you consider he over-uses his head movement and under-uses traditional striking defence. I just know that anyone backing Brown is going to be clenching hard during literally every striking exchange (trust me I’ve been there)…so I don’t think I could see myself backing him here at all, especially not as a favourite. He does have a bit of power, but I think the recent KO over the old and significantly slower Muslim Salikhov possibly flatters his overall capabilities of ending fights with his hands (his last KO win came nine fights prior, and before that we’re all the way back in 2016). His submissions have been much more potent, but EZDS has been a competent anti-grappler in his UFC career (including most recently against a very decent grappler in Rinat Fakhretdinov). So I don’t see that as a super reliable path for him either.
Zaleski’s a very powerful guy, with a lot of similarities to fellow Brazilian Vicente Luque in the way he approaches things on the feet. He’ll walk forward and throw bombs, which sometimes isn’t the smartest way to fight when he gets into a barnburner, but I think that’ll be fine when he’s got the superior firepower here.
Randy Brown is going to have a five-inch reach advantage and is the younger fighter here, which are likely the most prominent factors in explaining why he’s the favourite here (along with recency bias from the Salikhov finish). Whilst I can understand the arguments that may see Brown given the slight respect into favouritism, I think his path to victory relies on a near-perfect 15 minutes where he has to stick and move, whilst Zaleski needs one punch on the return.
I played the Brazilian for 1u here at +130, and unfortunately the line actually got better afterwards. Not often that happens, but oh well. Not going to add more.
How I line this fight: Randy Brown +100 (50%), Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos +100
Bet or pass: 1u Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos to Win (+130)

~Cesar Almeida v Roman Kopylov~
Another interesting fight where I’ve bet the underdog.
I rate Roman Kopylov as a striker, but I do think there needs to be a bit of an asterisk on what we’ve seen in the UFC so far. His highlight reel striking performances have come against Alessio Di Chirico, Punahele Soriano, Claudio Ribeiro, and Josh Fremd. I’m not saying those guys are bad, but they’re pretty flawed strikers that haven’t really been able to make a splash in the UFC with those assets alone. The best striker he’s faced in the UFC so far came all the way back in his debut against Karl Roberson, where he was second best.
Yes Cesar Almeida is only 5-0, but I think we saw enough in his UFC debut to show that he’s got capable enough defensive abilities to allow his kickboxing background to shine. Similar to Pereira when he came into the UFC. You can very clearly see the difference between him and the likes of Despaigne, who was a fish out of water as soon as things hit the mat (shoutout to Cortes-Acosta for the fight IQ there, I respect it). Regardless of that, Kopylov couldn’t even outgrapple Karl Roberson so I don’t expect this one to be decided via grappling anyway.
I’ve not gone back and watched a whole lot of tape for this one, it’s honestly just a narrative bet on credentials and capitalising on MMA striking being vastly overblown. When you consider the success that a lot of these kickboxers-turned-MMA fighters have in pure striking bouts, you eventually come to realise that MMA striking is vastly inferior – Izzy and Alex Pereira’s careers pretty much tell us this.
So as long as Kopylov doesn’t show serious sneaky improvements to his grappling, I think the line is the wrong way around here. Almeida could look anything from +100 to -300 in a striking-based fight, so at +125 I had to pull the trigger. Usually I don’t like to bet on narratives and without tape, but it’s not like me slaving away over footage has been particularly useful to me in recent months lol.
How I line this fight: Cesar Almeida -150 (60%), Roman Kopylov +150 (40%)
Bet or pass: 2u Cesar Almeida to Win (+125)

~Grant Dawson v Joe Solecki~
Third bet in a row here! Personally I think this is a pretty disrespectful line towards Dawson, who was very much looking like a top 15 kind of guy before he got put to sleep by Bobby Green. Obviously Bobby hit his path to victory there, but that result was a bit of an anomaly in my opinion. We’ve not seen Dawson show bad chin issues in the past, and Green isn’t really a one-and-done kind of hitter. Whether or not Dawson would have gone on to struggle against Green anyway across a longer distance fight I don’t know, but I’m not really lowering my opinion of Dawson as a result of the loss. It’s an overused example for a comparison, but remember that main eventer and P4P #1 Islam Makhachev once got KO’d very early in a UFC bout, and that didn’t stop him from demonstrating every bit of potential we thought he had before that result.
So how does this bout against Joe Solecki look? Well it’s clearly going to be a grappling-based fight, which kind of makes the concerns about Dawson’s recent KO loss even less relevant. Solecki is a guy I rate the grappling ability of, but in bouts like this I’ll often refer to how the wrestling and ability to maintain top control also plays a part…and that’s why I’m betting on Grant Dawson here.
Solecki may be the superior guy were they to compete in BJJ, but in an MMA context I just don’t think he’s going to be good enough to consistently get the better of Dawson in wrestling exchanges, nor keep him grounded for long enough should he end up on top. Solecki’s best work is done when he’s found a way to take the back, but I just can’t see Dawson being on the defensive enough here to find himself defending an RNC.
We have seen Dawson compete in grappling-focused UFC bouts against Damir Ismagulov, Mark Madsen, Jared Gordon, Rick Glenn, Leo Santos back-to-back, and he confidently won every fight except the Glenn one (where he very weirdly gassed out in the third and got 10-8’d.) Aside from that, he scored finishes in three of those fights, and scored x2 10-8 rounds against Ismagulov. High level stuff against some impressive names in their craft.
Solecki, on the other hand recently suffered a loss via low percentage means against Klose, so we won’t critique him for that. Prior to that, he lost a decision to the aforementioned Jared Gordon when his grappling failed him in the latter half of the fight. He also lost the opening round to Jim Miller, when Jim was very much a R1 only kind of guy (early after the Lymes disease diagnosis). Not shockingly bad results, but enough to give us an understanding of where his completely grappling game stacks up compared to the rest of the divison. IE, not on Dawson’s level.
In short, Solecki is one dimensional, and because of his lack of diversity in his abilities, I think it’s highly unlikely he finds the opportunities to show off the one-dimension he has. Dawson on the other hand, will have more top control and pressure, and his ground striking should clearly separate him as the round winner. He will need to be careful of the submissions, sweeps and reversals from Solecki, but I think Dawson’s proven himself enough against grapplers in the UFC so far for him to be trusted here. I combined him with Kevin Holland at -250 for a +110 parlay for 2u.
How I line this fight: Grant Dawson -400 (80%), Joe Solecki (20%)
Bet or pass: 2u Grant Dawson + Kevin Holland both to Win (+110)
Prop leans: None

~Niko Price v Alex Morono~
Niko Price is a fighter I usually have very little interest in betting, because he is reliably unreliable. So many of his UFC wins are forged in the fire, where a heavy strike that Price has thrown is just a split second quicker than the equally dangerous attack of his opponent…and the exact same could be said for his losses. More recently he’s also been on a pretty terrible run of form, getting finished by old man Robbie Lawler (nice tip on Lawler KO from me there!), as well as Phil Rowe. In fact, Price’s entire record since 2018 is full of asterisks and reasons to doubt him. His wins are all super high variance (two KO wins from off his back is WILD), or against very old and shopworn opponents. Basically, I don’t think you could trust him with much.
Alex Morono on the other hand, is a fighter who has mostly trended upwards in his UFC career. I say it every time he fights, but I think Morono’s one of the most improved UFC fighters we have seen recent years…but that’s mainly because he was pretty awful when he started. I used him in a double for his last fight against Court McGee, which I believed was one of the softest lay-ups a fighter has been given all year…and Morono made it way harder than it needed to be and actually made COURT MCGEE look like a good striker. That fight was literally two months ago, so I think to ignore that glaringly obvious red flag would be foolish.
So this is a fight between two guys that you simply cannot trust, and therefore one that you should not be betting. I obviously pick Morono to be the favourite, as his concerns could easily be attributed to a bad/off day, whilst Price’s career has been skidding for over half a decade….but -275 is a steep price on a fight so volatile. If you’re someone who wants to throw a small amount on every fight to keep it fun, then Price has to be the dog of choice (he even has a KO win over Morono already, for the little that’s worth). But for everyone else, leave this one alone.
How I line this fight: A line of coke would be less chaos than this fight.

~Phil Rowe v Jake Matthews~
Fighters like Jake Matthews remind me that I’ve been in this game for way too long, because I’m sick of writing the same narratives about certain competitors.
Jake Matthews is a complicated fighter because he is incredibly unreliable, and I believe this is because he is both overrated and sometimes underrated, and therefore hard to line correctly. He was groomed as the face of Australiasian MMA before Rob and Izzy came along, so about 80% of his UFC record is pathetic can crushing in an attempt to make him look better than he is. The UFC randomly chose violence and threw him in against Michael Morales, where he actually outperformed his +250 price tag and looked competitive striking against one of the more interesting prospects at the moment. But whilst that looks like a positive sign…Matthews also lost to Matt Semelsberger just three fights ago. So who fucking knows.
Phil Rowe doesn’t inspire a whole lot of confidence either, as I believe him to be similarly unreliable and hard to predict. The 33-year-old is 0-3 in decisions, which I personally think is a very telling statistic as it clearly describes you as dangerous yet incompetent. His UFC career has seen him lose decisions to Gabe Green and Neil Magny, whilst knocking out Niko Price, Jason Witt, and Orion Cosce.
Fights are much more complex than considering whether the finisher can find a finish, but I think it’s the key question here. Matthews can *sometimes* be a tough guy to look good against, and not the easiest guy to finish either….which leads me to believe that a Matthews decision win is a very plausible path to victory. However, as I’ve said…trusting Jake Matthews is only for those with a high appetite for risk, as you never truly know what you’re going to get.
I don’t have a strong opinion on this fight, but in terms of a betting line I was fine seeing it so close. Since then, it seems Matthews has gone on to strengthen as a favourite, which makes me now think this line is a little bit wide. My reasoning was more so that I thought both fighters are 50% capable of losing, as opposed to both fighters have 50% potential to win. So I’d need more than +130 to +150 to want to back the dog here really.
I was keen on Jake Matthews’ Decision win prop though, as I felt he is quite limited in terms of winning methods these days, and should have the minute winning advantage against Rowe (who is yet to actually win a professional decision). With the recent line movement in Matthews’ favour, there probably won’t be a good enough price on that one. I’d want to +200 there.
How I line this fight: Jake Matthews +100 (50%), Phil Rowe +100 (50%)
Bet or pass: 0.5u Jake Matthews by Decision (+200 or better…very unlikely that price is anywhere near)
Prop leans: See above

~Mickey Gall v Basil Hafez~
The return of Basil Hafez. I was quite enthusiastic in trying to fade him when he was initially supposed to face Preston Parsons, arguing that pressure wrestling a guy like Jack Della Maddalena was a one-way ticket to becoming incredibly overrated. I fancied a fellow wrestler like Parsons to ask the question and felt there was value there. Given how Parsons looked that week against Semelsberger, I reckon I was on to something.
But Mickey Gall is a very different stylistic matchup, so we have to re-assess if the fade is on. Firstly, Gall is a pretty decent submission threat, which makes this one interesting considering Hafez’s seemingly endless display of takedowns will increase the chances of a submission presenting itself in the scramble. Gall isn’t a particularly good striker, but he’s definitely shown himself to be capable of looking good against other fighters we deem ‘bad’ strikers. He might well have a bit of a striking advantage here.
Gall’s takedown defence is pretty bad though, and his submission game so far has almost exclusively been demonstrated from top position. Whilst I do think Gall has a chance at finding a submission here, the style he is going up against can be an absolute nightmare if you don’t at least have the takedown defence to keep your opponent honest. We haven’t really seen Gall face that kind of stylistic challenge yet, but remembering that the likes of Diego Sanchez was able to use takedowns to score a finish over Gall…it doesn’t really fill me with confidence.
Hafez getting a win here could be a good thing long term, because I am poised and ready to fade the guy. This isn’t the time though, in my opinion…so it’s a pass all round for me. I will be hoping that Hafez gets an easy win to further inflate the hype and the price tag, but I do not believe he is going to have a long UFC career once he gets round out.
How I line this fight: Mickey Gall +200 (33%), Basil Haffez -200 (67%)
Bet or pass: Pass

~Ailin Perez vs Joselyne Edwards~
Ailin Perez is possibly one of my most confident picks on the entire card, which is hilarious. I’m quite familiar with both women’s game, and this feels like a gift of a matchup for her stylistically.
Joselyne Edwards is your quintessential WMMA fighter. Decent volume on the feet, with straight shots that don’t really do any damage but will land consistently. She mixes in takedowns when she feels she needs to, but her top position grappling isn’t particularly amazing and is hardly a trump card. Defensively, she takes a similar amount as she gives, and has historically been pretty bad at defending takedowns. The figures say it’s a 64% defense, but the win over Ramona Pascual skews that percentage massively because she defended a high volume there.
We know what we’re getting from Perez – suffocating tenacity as she looks to get in her opponent’s face, throw bombs and land a takedown. Her game is quite sloppy and rough around the edges, but the judges do not score technique, and it certainly is effective. In that sense, she’s kind of similar to a Vanessa Demopoulos…and we know how good she is at winning fights with fuck all talent.
The easiest way to stifle an approach like Perez’s is to have some sort of threat that will keep her honest, whether that be in the form or striking power or good clinch work. Joselyne Edwards is certainly lacking in the power department, with little to no power and even less of a submission game. She doesn’t have the best footwork either, so I overall struggle to see how she’s going to stop Ailin from corralling her up against the fence and finding her takedown entry.
Once Perez finds it, I think it should be one way traffic. Edwards may be able to stay safe from anything dangerous, or perhaps find a few avenues back to the feet…but Perez has shown she has absolutely no problem in the rinse and repeat takedown approach. She can stick to Edwards like glue, and smother her from a dominant position, and I just don’t think Edwards is going to have any answer for it long term. I do have a concern or two about Perez’s cardio, after she blew her load against Pudilova, but that’s probably Edwards’ clearest path to a win.
In my mind, a win for Edwards is likely going to be a competitive 15 minutes that could end up being a split. For Perez, it could come from damage on the feet with her wild striking, or from serious minutes of top control where she wins rounds with relative ease. Clearly that means I think Perez wins this at a high clip as long as the cardio doesn’t play a part.
Edwards is tough so I’m not sure I see Perez getting a finish, but I do think this should be one way traffic, for the first two rounds at least. Perez to win at -250 actually felt like a reasonable pricetag to me, so I was surprised to see it trending downwards and that she’s around the -200 mark here. Personally I was interested in using -250 in a small parlay, but now I’m anticipating I’ll be playing a SGP with Perez to Win & Over 1.5 Rounds. I think this one will become a long term grind, and that suits Perez perfectly because she’s such a dog. If I get -150 or better for that, it’s on.
How I line this fight: Ailin Perez -300 (75%), Joselyne Edwards +300 (25%)
Bet or pass: 1u Ailin Perez to Win & Over 1.5 Rounds (-150 or better)
Prop leans: See above (an SGP counts as a prop bet to me)

~Andre Lima v Mitch Raposo~
This fight was announced just as I ran out of time, so no writeup for me. I remember Raposo being a bit of a sloppy wrestler on TUF, but I’ve no other opinions.

Bets (Bold = been placed)
2u Sean Strickland to Win & Over 1.5 Rounds (-130)
2u Sean Strickland to Win in Rounds 4, 5 or by Decision (+175)
2u Kevin Holland & Grant Dawson to Win (+110)
2u Cesar Almeida to Win (+125)
1u Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos to Win (+150)
2u Ailin Perez to Win + Over 1.5 Rounds (-120)
1u Mackhachev, Strickland, Holland, J. Almeida all to Win (+234)
0.5u Morono, Matthews, Hafez, Perez all to Win (+401)
Parlay Pieces: Kevin Holland, Grant Dawson, Ailin Perez
Dog of the Week: Cesar Almeida
Picks: Makhachev, Strickland, Holland, J. Almeida, EZDS, C. Almeida, Dawson, Matthews, Morono, Hafez, Perez
This is the first time I’ve listed my ‘picks’, which I’ve historically been against doing. As the value of my betting-based content has gone down the toilet in recent months, I figured it makes sense to pivot towards the parlay betting folks to make all this writing a bit more worthwhile for the community.
This comes with a warning though – just because I pick someone to win, does not mean I think you should bet them. A ‘pick’ is a binary thing, which means I am expecting X fighter to have 51% or more chance of winning…which is almost always going to actually be lower than the betting line itself. For example, I’ve picked Hafez, but I don’t think he should be anywhere near -350 – I therefore do not advise betting him at all.

2024.05.21 11:31 Toteldejesus How octogenarian Cecile Guidote-Alvarez rushed to the beauty salon to tackle West Philippine Sea

On a rainy Saturday afternoon not so long ago when internet connection was fluctuating in most homes, the 80-year-old Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, widow of the late Senator Heherson Alvarez, carrying a mini iPad, hurriedly alighted from a three-wheeled pedicab Toktok and stormed her way into a popular coffee shop in a mall in Manila.

A senior citizen in panic mode, she told the stunned baristas she’s looking for a Wi-Fi connection because she was about to interview retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio via Zoom.
The coffee shop, a known world brand, has Wi-Fi exclusive to its employees, so the old lady was told to try other establishments. She went from one coffee shop to another only to be told the same, until a kind stranger led her to a well-known beauty salon with a free internet connection.
The lady salon attendant was very accommodating to the octogenarian, even typing the password on her IPad. Of course, she needed to avail herself of their salon services. Initially, she opted for a haircut, but since she needed to talk and hear clearly who she was talking to, she settled for a foot spa with pedicure.
“They lowered the volume of the piped-in music, and since there were less customers because it’s been raining all day, I was able to do my interview,” Guidote-Alvarez said.
For the next half-an-hour, the hair dressers and manicurists working with their scissors, nail clippers and cuticle removers on their customers’ hair and fingernails, listened to Carpio and Guidote-Alvarez discussed how Filipino fishermen and the Philippine Navy ships helplessly negotiate their ways in Scarborough Shoal amid the territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea.
“They were all very nice to me. I was able to finish my interview, with newly pedicured nails,” she told The Diarist.
For those who’ve worked with Guidote-Alvarez, her steadfast, almost stubborn, nature to accomplish a task, is nothing out of the ordinary. She would improvise, find alternatives, call up friends and former students, wake them up from sleep, just to get things done.
But now, in her 80s, legally blind and nearly deaf, she has mellowed down.
Cecile Alvarez with her mentors, National Artist for Literature Alejandro Roces, Jr and Fr. James Reuter. SJ
In her twilight years, Guidote-Alvarez has been solely hosting the 57-year-old Radyo Balintataw on DZRH, one of the oldest radio stations in the Philippines, where she tackles a wide range of topics, from climate change, women’s health, theater, culture, dance, to current issues, apart from playing old recordings of classic radio plays she produced and directed, dating back to the late ‘80s.
She shared with TheDiarist.ph how she started and continues to host one of the longest running advocacy programs on AM Radio.
Theater on TV
After founding the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) on April 7, 1967, or exactly 57 years ago, Guidote-Alvarez thought of the need to expose PETA’s members to television, so she started conceptualizing Balintataw, which in Filipino means the pupil of the eye, but in a larger context has something to do with having wild imagination, or what you might see if you have a third eye.
“I designed Balintataw as a bridge between cinema and the stage, where the youth being trained in theater skills can have a ready-made laboratory experience linked with the film and entertainment industry that would likewise have a natural on-the-job training and orientation regarding the theatrical discipline of working with a literary script, whether dramatic or comic—not the regular improvised script done on taping or copycat scripts from foreign themes,” Guidote-Alvarez wrote in her yet-to-be published Memoir of a Freedom Fighter’s Wife.
“A primary goal when I conceived PETA was to initiate and sustain artistic expression that draws meaning and power from the lives of the people, and sharing the literary gems with a greater number of audiences through a Broadcast Theater-Film Program with Balintataw on Channel 5,” she added.
“No matter how little the pay, at least it provided our local writers with a little honorarium. I sought permission for award-winning pieces of the Palanca Playwriting contest to be fleshed out to reach the masses. The much-awarded playwright Bert Florentino served as our literary manager, assisted by Mauro Avena. Eventually, Isagani Cruz took over when Bert left for the US,” she wrote.
“Writers need exposure and encouragement through a regular TV performance that will give them a sense of achievement and inspire them to keep on writing with some kind of honorarium. I was glad Lupita Aquino (now Kashiwahara) agreed to be TV director and Robert Arevalo as TV host.
She got members of the PETA Kalinangan Ensemble to serve as stage directors. “This is to undertake preliminary preparation with a rehearsal with the actors for character development and memorization and preliminary staging,” she wrote.
Five months after PETA was founded, Balintataw TV premiered on Channel 5 on Aug. 19, 1967, coinciding with the Buwan ng Wika birthdate of President Manuel Luis Quezon.
The first play, whose title escapes her now, featured Armida Siguion-Reyna and Maria Eva “Chingbee” Kalaw. She employed photo journalist and award-winning photographedocumentarist/cinematographer, Romy Vitug, to work with her in filming outdoor scenes for Balintataw.
In the pre-Martial Law Balintataw, among those initiated into television were Lino Brocka, Elwood Perez, Nick Lizaso, Maryo delos Reyes, Mario O’Hara, Joey Gosiengfiao, Behn Cervantes, and Frank Rivera.
Among the stage actors who crossed over to television were Lily Gamboa, Angie Ferro, Lorlie Villanueva, Jonee Gamboa, Joy Soler, Sherry Lara, Gardy Labad, Noel Trinidad.
Like with PETA, Guidote-Alvarez directed and managed Balintataw for five years. Because of Martial Law, she and husband Heherson went on exile in the US to escape a military shoot-to-kill order on Heherson, who was tagged as a subversive.
Post-Martial Law
Internationally acclaimed auteur Lav Diaz mentioned in several interviews how he learned writing radio and TV scripts in Balintataw.
This happened in the late 1980s, when the Alvarez couple returned from exile.
Despite its absence on the air in the Martial Law years, Balintataw was honored by Star Awards as among the 20 unforgettable outstanding broadcast programs in the Philippines.
“This encouraged me to consider reviving Balintataw on TV. Another blessing was a FAMAS award for having an important role in the development of cinema recognizing Balintataw as a bridge for synergizing cinema with the stage, providing a pathway of entry of our PETA artists into film and for movie stars to consider enriching their experience by acting on the legitimate stage,” Guidote-Alvarez wrote.
Though she didn’t return to PETA anymore because it had been surviving well and had its own set of officers led by Brocka, she just tapped some of its members for the return of Balintataw.
For 14 years, the Alvarez couple lived in the US as political exiles, shown here during a Ninoy Aquino Movement meeting. Cecile revived Radyo Balintataw upon their return in the late 1980s.
Channel 4 stint
“I arranged to revive TV Balintataw on Channel 4 in 1989. We began with a drama about a rebel returnee, title escapes me now, but I clearly remember it was written by Lualhati Bautista and directed by Maryo de los Reyes. We also had a good story series on the hazing of Lenny Villa, an Aquila Legis Frat neophyte,” she wrote.
At the time, Heherson had been elected senator after having served as Agrarian Reform Minister and eventually Cabinet Secretary during the first year of the Cory Aquino Administration.
“We were able to unravel the deadly hazing process from a fellow neophyte who broke the code of silence as we revealed graphically, acted the cruel process used. I had Jose Mari Avellana direct it. This presentation won all the awards. Lav Diaz was training with us and he started writing teleplays. We also had Nora Aunor in an adaptation of Bert Florentino’s The World Is An Apple, adapted by Frank Rivera, and I had Nick Lizaso direct.”
Emmy Awards
Balintataw TV was selected as one of five soaps for social change recognized by Emmy Awards. The Philippines was one of five countries cited, with Mexico, India, Brazil and Kenya.
“The nomination was made possible by the wonderful support from David Poindexter. It was a supreme honor for our country to be recognized in the Emmy Awards, to be cited among the five Third World countries using soap opera for social change.”
Poindexter was a Methodist minister and TV producer who founded the Population Communications International.
Surviving on radio
“In spite of the cry about how television can be deadening the minds of the people with copied themes with an eternal favorite love triangle story, there was really no funding for Balintataw,” she wrote.
“Sponsors would go naturally to the commercial stations where big stars were paid highly for the starring role. Balintataw may have substance but we could not afford payment of bankable stars,” she added.
“Financial stress forced me to drop TV and remain on radio because I didn’t want to kill Balintataw per se just because we didn’t have funds.”
Creative classroom
“We have focused on Balintataw as a creative classroom on the air. I was able to talk to Fred J. Elizalde of DZRH and the president of the network, Mr. Jun Nicdao,” she wrote.
In the ‘80s, the HIV/AIDS became a global epidemic and in the Philippines, the general populace was still clueless on how to deal with it.
“In order to get funding, the first series I did was about the explosive news regarding AIDS in Asia. I got the DOH Secretary at the time, Dr. Juan Flavier, to act as himself, providing the data. It was easier to start off with an AIDS radio serial.
They did a minimum of 13 episodes to raise awareness about the disease.
“From then on, some of our television scripts we transformed into a radio version. DZRH provided us with our initial production staff, so we used some from the network and some of its resident artists and drama talents. Our time slots were changing but always coming after the long-running horror drama, Gabi ng Lagim.
“We worked on the themes of overseas workers, the drug problem, corruption, aside from portraying contemporary and literary classics serving as social commentaries,” she wrote.
Women playwrights
“We dramatized the works of noted women writers and playwrights like Estrella Alfon, Genoveva Edroza Matute and Marilou Jacob, who is distinguished in being a founding president of Women’s Playwright International.
“Apart from our PETA staple of writers, we involved young, upcoming and budding university and community theater groups.
“We also had a lot of foreign plays, where we could feature theater festivals beyond borders. We could do Shakespeare, we could do Euripides but also the current playwrights in the Arab region we translated in our language.
“We brought in Chinese contemporary plays, Malaysian, Indonesian and from other women writers from ASEAN member countries.”
Virtual history book
“The significance of Balintataw is portrayed as a virtual history book on audio as it unveiled events in the country. Radio is fresh, instant and up-to date,” she added.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Balintataw became Guidote-Alvarez’s outlet and therapy. Having lost her husband on the second month of the pandemic, a widow cocooned at home, she began hosting it six days a week, learning how to use an iPad and interviewing via Zoom.
The word “Balintataw” has been associated with her name.
Visual artist and editorial cartoonist Benjie Lontoc in casual meeting told us how in his younger days, when AM Radio was a national past-time, he was surprised to hear a Filipino adaptation of No Exit by Jean Paul-Sarte. This was when radio was airing soap, fantasy adventures targeting housewives and children.
Another was the airing of Larawan as a radio play in the 1990s, with Guidote-Alvarez as the voice of Candida Marasigan.
Leopoldo Salcedo (left) as Manolo in a confrontation scene with Dante Rivero as Tony Javier in PETA’s 1968 ‘Larawan’ directed by Cecile Guidote-Alvarez. (Photo from PETA archives)
In the 1960s, she directed Larawan, the first Filipino adaptation of Joaquin’s A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino for PETA’s second season. It ran from December 1968 to January 1969 at the Raha Sulayman Theater at Fort Santiago in Intramural. In the cast were Rita Gomez (Candida), Lolita Rodriguez (Paula), Leopoldo Salcedo (Don Manolo) and Dante Rivero (Tony Javier).
Guidote-Alvarez has a funny recollection of the radio play. It was Nick Joaquin himself who told her years ago how his pedicurist suddenly started a conversation about Larawan.
Joaquin was relaxing on the barber’s chair having a post-haircut pedicure and foot spa when the lady pedicurist asked him how the story would end. Joaquin was stunned because he didn’t want to be known in the barber shop as Nick Joaquin the famous National Artist for Literature, but just a regular customer.
“He told me he almost fell out from the chair. He was a very private person and the pedicurist recognized him as the playwright,” Guidote-Alvarez, laughing, told TheDiarist.ph.
When she was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, she was given only three years to live. It’s been more than two decades since then. She has also conquered COVID-19 twice.
Over and beyond her work in theater and various advocacies, Guidote-Alvarez is among the few surviving practitioners of AM Radio broadcasting.
The beauty salon incident wasn’t a first for the octogenarian radio host. She occasionally went back there to interview guests and record her shows whenever Wi-Fi connections in her home fluctuated.
Despite all setbacks, man-made or otherwise, the steadfast Cecile Guidote-Alvarez’s voice continues to be heard in this mass media platform in an era that knows mainly Spotify. As Joaquin wrote, “to remember and to sing, that is her vocation.”
(Except Saturday, Radyo Balintataw airs daily on DZRH 666 Khz AM radio after ‘Gabi ng Lagim’, and live streamed on radio.org.ph. Some episodes have been uploaded on YouTube.)

2024.05.13 07:54 atalba What will Bay FC's Roster Look Like in 2 Years; 2026?

I ask this question because it takes a while to build a squad of players that fit together and play the way the manager hopes to be able to play. More importantly, the GM signs the players; is responsible for the draft; makes the trades/transfers; and sets out a strategy for the club to pursue. American sports try and give expansion clubs and losing clubs to build from the draft, but it takes time.
As I've posted before, Lucy Rushton is the GM with a stated mission to play, in her words, like "Barcelona." That's not Montoya's statement. In fact, he doesn't have enough players that can play in tight spaces; nor forwards that are known to play well together in a combining effort. Oshoala and Kundananji are the type of forwards that need to get behind the defenders, using their speed. Rushton has very little experience in the women's game, as she came from the MLS, but has the pedigree and academics to be a football executive. She doesn't have experience with the American pool of players, and appears to not have a grip of European players.
As a reference, here's both Angel City's and San Diego Wave's inaugural 2022 opening day rosters:
Forwards: Simone Charley, Jun Endo, Tyler Lussi, Christen Press, and Jasmyne Spencer. Midfielders: Hope Breslin, Katie Cousins, Stefany Ferrer Van Ginkel, Savannah McCaskill, Lily Nabet, Cari Roccaro, Miri Taylor, and Dani Weatherholt.
The defenders: Vanessa Gilles, Sarah Gorden, Madison Hammond, Paige Nielsen, Ali Riley, Allyson Swaby, M.A. Vignola, Megan Reid. The goalkeepers: DiDi Haračić, Brittany Isenhour, and Maia Perez. The coaching staff: Head Coach Freya Coombe, Assistant Head Coach and Performance Director Robert Udberg, and Head of Goalkeeping Coach Daniel Ball.
Forwards: Alex Morgan; Amirah Ali; Jodie Taylor; Katie Johnson; Makenzy Doniak; Marleen Schimmer; Sofia Jakobsson.
Defenders: Abby Dahlkemper; Tegan McGrady; Christen Westphal; Kaleigh Riehl; Kayla Bruster; Mia Gyau; Naomi Girma; Taylor Hansen.
Midfielders: Belle Briede; Emily van Egmond; Kelsey Turnbow; Kristen McNabb; Sydney Pulver; Taylor Kornieck; Taylor Porter.
If ACFC is lucky, they might lose another 5 or 6 players by the beginning of next season. The Wave might lose another 4 or 5 players as well.
This is how things go. Give the Bay FC a chance to build out their roster and compete for the playoffs. How many of our original players do you think will be on the roster opening day 2026? Will Rushton still be the GM?

2024.05.04 20:16 DC_Earth21 Wonder Woman TV Series Pitch

Hi, I'm an aspiring screenwriter looking to develop a Wonder Woman series exploring her earlier years building off of her origins and exploring her lore in a way that actively builds upon the ideas presented specifically in the years after her creation. I'm hoping to find a co-writer but would also just be happy with some opinions on the story I wrote out here.
The Immortal Wonder Woman
The series will chronicle the epic journey of Diana Prince as she navigates the complexities of the modern world while embracing her legacy as the Amazonian warrior, Wonder Woman. Inspired by George Perez’s Wonder Woman and Golden Age Wonder Woman, attempting to modernize the themes of the stories that made her important when she first debuted decades ago.
[Diana/ Wonder Woman] A fierce and compassionate warrior princess from Paradise Island, torn between her duty to protect humanity and her desire for peace. She is independent, blunt, and can sometimes be borderline preachy, but she genuinely believes in the good in people and hopes to inspire them to achieve their best selves.
[Steve Trevor] Steve Trevor courageous Air Force pilot and spy, Steve is a man who can be seen as unmotivated but will always fight for what he deems to be important. He's extremely supportive and has no problem being saved by others. He genuinely only feels he's at his best when he's around Diana.
[Barbara Ann Minerva] Barbara Ann Minerva is an archaelogist driven by ambition and her attempts at proving her own validity to herself. She is more than happy with Diana's belief in people's ability to be good despite her somewhat cynical nature, despite her personal beliefs that people should have to earn their keep.
[Etta Candy] Etta Candy is a loyal friend, who provides unwavering support and bravery. She's confident in who she is and is an indomitable spirit who will stand up to threats extremely out of her league through clever means.
[Hippolyta] Hippolyta is the Queen of the Amazons torn between her duty to protect her people and the love she holds for her daughter. She's conflicted with Diana's beliefs that Paradise Island and humanity can live in peace between each other, but still does her best to guide Diana from afar.
[Ed Indelicato] Ed Indelicato is a former corrupt police detective and a cynic, who struggles with his feelings of self worth after the death of his partner, his divorce, and suspension from the force. Ed serves the purpose of the straight man locked within this god-like conflict within the city.
[Vanessa Kapatelis] Approaching a once promising career in ballet, Vanessa Kapatelis loses the ability to walk after an attack by a criminal at a bank robbery. Vanessa's own issues with self-worth, jealousy, and loss of her identity as Diana tries to help her confront her newfound disability.
[Julia Kapatelis] Julia is the mother of Vanessa Kapatelis and a professor at a university, she took in Diana in as her mentor and sheltered her as she came to Gateway City. She can be overprotective at times, which is seen as her being strict by her daughter.
[Sargent Steel] Sarge is a veteran who lost his left hand while service. Despite his disability he continues his service for his country as the head of a branch of the D.E.O. He frequently comes into conflict with metahumans, but he's more than happy to be proven wrong about his suspicions.
The series explores themes of redemption, independence, morality, and identity as we see Diana develop from guarded princess to diplomatic ambassador for peace. Her arrival in Gateway City is quickly marked as she soon discovers hides an intricate web of mystically hidden Gateways to mythological lands, as portions of the city's residents are slowly becoming exposed and persecuted against by the humans within the city. Driven by her unwavering dedication for peace, Diana strives to carve out a safe haven for those displaced by the D.E.O. who arrive in the city to contain the burgeoning chaos.
But her sometimes stubborn nature not only lead to conflict with the D.E.O. but also her interpersonal relationships as she finds herself entangled with a love triangle with Steve Trevor and Barbara Ann Minerva. Diana navigates the hidden gateways to different worlds confronting both mythological and domestic threats like revived ancient armies, the paramilitary terrorist organization called Sear Group and egomaniacal businesswoman, Veronica Cale.
Epic, Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Drama. TV-MA. 13 Episodes.
If anyone is interested in the development of the series feel free to send me a DM.

Definitely not my best work there, but a testament to why hedging is an important tool to utilise when possible because it bailed me out of some bad bets. Thanks to those early moves, I managed to reduce my losses a lot more, so I’m happy with the overall results despite actually getting most of my bets wrong here. Onama’s ability to hit that reversal from back control was ridiculous, and if Pearce addressed that I think he would have been just fine. Guskov was a nice hit. Nicolau getting flatlined was not.

UFC 301
We really were spoiled by UFC 299 and UFC 300, because this PPV looks anaemic in comparison. I guess it’s mainly because those events used up some of Brazil’s biggest names (Pereira, Figgy, Moicano, Andrade, Jailton, Marina, Lopes, Burns), and these kinds of cards are always Brazil vs the World (my favourite kind of style of card). I’m still looking forward to it compared to the typical Apex garbage though=, so no complaints from me!
It didn’t take long to realise that this card has been curated to be very Brazilian friendly. I am absolutely not one of these conspiracy theorists who thinks the UFC is rigged, but I think it’s very important when betting to ask yourself WHY this fight was booked (especially for PPVs). The UFC’s business model runs off creating stars and generating hype (the existence of DWCS proves this), so these kind of cards are the perfect opportunity to do that. The matchmakers are literally paid to make decisions on who fights who, so none of this stuff is accidental. If you’re familiar with my history as an MMA Trader, you’ll know that thinking about public perception is where my skills lie, so I’m always excited for PPVs because there’s extra narrative in a lot of the fights.
Let’s get into it!
Alexandre Pantoja v Steve Erceg
This is a very weird main event. The Flyweight division is starting to fade again, as its top 15 is littered with fighters who have either shown their ceiling is below championship quality, or guys who aren’t active enough to be given title shots. Erceg has managed to bag himself a title shot from 11th in the rankings, despite having only three fights in the company. Aside from fighters coming into the organisation with a strong reputation in combat sports, or women’s divisions, I can’t think of a fighter who has made their way to a title shot quicker than Erceg has in recent years.
Historically, I bet on Pantoja against most opponents because I’ve always been convinced he’s been championship calibre, and has multiple paths to victory every time. I have tried to fade Erceg mostly due to the rapid stepping up in competition, but I also bet him against Costa.
I know there’s a bit of a theme with me being non-committal towards betting on title fights (except Pereira last event, hehe), but I think this is probably an acceptable fight to shrug my shoulders at – purely because of the unknowns regarding Erceg. I don’t really think you can look at his performance against Alessandro Costa or David Dvorak and come away with any conclusion regarding his chances against Pantoja. I guess you could take something from the opening five minutes against Schnell…but that’s still not a great comparison because Schnell’s biggest weakness is still Pantoja’s biggest strength (chin/durability)?
On the flipside, what we do know about Erceg is that some of his best strengths are actually in the areas that Pantoja looks to exploit. The Brazilian is one of the most durable fighters in MMA history, having never been finished in 32 professional bouts – 14 of which took place in the UFC. He weaponizes that by pushing a pace and creating chaos that he knows he can be the more durable fighter in. Aside from that, he’s also got an elite submission game, and his grappling is top notch. His striking certainly isn’t bad either.
But, as I said, that doesn’t sound as much of a nightmare for Erceg as it does for a lot of other guys. Steve’s done most of his work in the UFC on the feet, where he has shown some very impressive durability (and on the regional scene). People also therefore forget that he’s primarily a grappler also, having six submissions on his record. Of course I expect him to be inferior to Pantoja in both areas, but I don’t see him getting steamrolled like Perez, Royval (1) or Schnell did.
So whilst there are still a hell of a lot of unknowns about Erceg, what we do know is enough to predict that this is unlikely to be Pantoja’s most dominant win. If the Brazilian can’t get finishes against an opponent, he has to rely on his minute winning ability. Whilst those are still very good skills (and enough to get the better of Brandon Moreno!), it’s definitely the way he can be exploited the most (a 9-5 record in fights that go the distance, to quantify that belief).
So in short, despite not having much confidence in my line here, I have to grade Pantoja as less of a favourite than the books currently do, but a favourite nonetheless. Erceg’s ceiling is still unknown, but logic would dictate that this is too much too soon. It’s therefore no bet from me on the moneyline, but my belief in Erceg’s durability will obviously lead me to consider the overs in this fight. Not too sure what I expect to see here but if the FGTD is plus money then I’ll probably get involved somehow. Keep an eye on the bet list at the bottom of the post to see what/if I bet.
EDIT: The Distance totals didn't really end up where I was expecting, so I won't be betting these after all. I was hoping to get Over 2.5 at like -125 but the books are savvy.
How I line this fight: Alexandre Pantoja -188 (65%), Steve Erceg +188 (35%)
Bet or pass: I may look at the overs, but the ML is a pass
Prop leans: None
Jonathan Martinez v Jose Aldo
Second fight, second non-committal stance, I’m afraid. I know this one is around a pick’em, and I know it’s super interesting…but do any of you train with Jose Aldo or know him personally? If not, I don’t think any of us have even the slightest clue how he’s going to look in the cage after almost two years on the sidelines. Yes, he’s been boxing, which gives some positive signs that he’s still keeping in some sort of shape – but he drew with Jeremy Stephens and beat two guys with combined pro records of 0-9-1. Hardly enough to believe he’ll be as sharp as when he was an active UFC fighter.
Jonathan Martinez on the other hand is eight years younger than Jose Aldo, and in his athletic/career prime. He’s currently riding a six-fight winning streak that includes wins over Said Nurmagomedov and Adrian Yanez. He’s a very well-rounded fighter that uses leg kicks to great effect, as is typical from a Factory X homegrown talent. He’s also been criminally underrated in these last few years after the shock loss to Davey Grant. Dude was -105 against Zviad Lazishvili (who even is that?), and both of the aforementioned wins.
Unfortunately for Martinez, Aldo is not going to lose out to the leg kicking game, instead he may be the one landing the significant leg strikes there. That kind of takes away one of Martinez’s most reliable weapons, which makes this one even more interesting.
Other than that, I genuinely don’t know what more to say. Logic and history tells us that the younger and more conditioned Martinez should win here, but if Aldo manages to find a special Brazilian doctor of some sort, or if he just ends up being fortunate that father time is generous to him, then the Jose Aldo we know and love should confidently beat Jonathan Martinez.
Who wins this fight? I have no idea. Neither do you. That’s why it’s a pick’em. Don’t think about it anymore than that. Just pass and enjoy watching the questions get answered inside the cage.
How I line this fight: No idea.
Bet or pass: Pass
Prop leans: None
Paul Craig v Caio Borralho
Hell yeah, I love it when we get fights like this. Guys I rate very highly and always look to bet, vs guys I think are massively overrated and always look to fade. In case it wasn’t obvious, Craig is the fade and Borralho is the prospect.
I have a lot of love and respect for Paul Craig. He’s long been one of the most successful and inspiring UK fighters – and his fights at various UFC Londons have often been the highlight of the entire events. Also, the man has an exquisite music taste - his walkout song choices always result in me finding new bands and albums to listen to. Thanks for that Paul!
But in terms of in-cage ability…he’s as one dimensional as it gets. His style is pretty much identical to Royce Gracie in the earliest UFC days. He has an elite submission game, but everything else in his skillset is hugely inferior, which will always limit him. Statistically, I rate all of his skills at a 3, but his pure submission game as a 9.
It’s been really fun to see the UFC booking Craig in fights that allow him to show his best work (as opposed to the Volkan Oezdemir fight, which was painful to watch), but MMA is much more complex than sheer submission ability. Against Muniz he was victorious because he was actually the superior striker, and also had the superior cardio that night…but the fight against Brendan Allen showed those limitations again. Going back to those aforementioned skillset rankings, Craig was inferior in every area of MMA, but he was matched or even trumped by Allen’s BJJ too. In short, I knew that Craig had no consistent way of winning that fight, and needed a high variance Hail Mary. I bet Allen quite confidently there.
And that conclusion is the exact same one I come to here. Caio Borralho is actually a severely underrated wrestler, and that is what makes him so great. I have no doubt that his wrestling is superior to Craig’s, which will result in more top control time for the Brazilian. Of course, Caio is an elite BJJ fighter himself, so like Allen and Muniz before him, I’m not worried about Craig’s offence from guard.
So the only other ways I see Craig winning this fight are the same as the Muniz fight, via superior striking or cardio. Right off the bat, I don’t think Craig’s a better striker than Caio (though it’s competitive enough), and the aforementioned wrestling success should stop that from being the story of the fight if Caio approaches the fight intelligently…but the cardio dynamic could be one to be wary of. I personally think the complaints about Caio’s cardio are vastly overdone – he’s won the third round on 11 of the 12 scorecards that has been submitted in his UFC career (if we ignore the point deduction against Omargadzhiev).
Therefore, that leads me to conclude that I think this is a well-booked fight by the UFC, who want to bolster the record and popularity of one of their most interesting Brazilian prospects and get a big win for the home crowd. Craig will give Caio the fight he wants, and he will likely lose in doing so. Caio should win this fight at least 80% of the time, I think…which gives me about 6-7% of value on the -275 price tag I pounced on. As expected, that’s long gone now. That’s a 5u bet for me.
How I line this fight: Paul Craig +400 (20%), Caio Borralho -400 (80%)
Bet or pass: 5u Caio Borralho to Win (-275)
Prop leans: Caio could win this fight in any of the three ways tbh.
Anthony Smith v Vitor Petrino
The UFC reward Anthony Smith for his years of warrior spirit, company-first mentality, and his contributions on the UFC analyst bench…with a fight against one of the LHW division’s scariest upcoming prospects. How generous of them. Nonetheless, Smith is still talking crazy in interviews saying he’s close to a title shot with a win here, lol.
Vitor Petrino had one of those questionable records coming into the UFC. People have tried to fade him with Anton Turkalj, Marcin Prachnio, Modestas Bukauskas, and most recently Tyson Pedro. I understood the Modestas one, but the others were ridiculous. I bet Petrino at -250 against Pedro, and I think he definitely justified the price tag there.
Petrino is just so physically imposing. Whether he’s using his wrestling or striking, it just always feels like his opponents are tentative that Petrino’s about to do something explosive and dangerous. It’s been quite impressive seeing him show off his wrestling ability, as most believed him to be a pure striker that would struggle on the ground.
Anthony Smith is a very interesting litmus test for any aspiring top 15’er though, because despite the fact that Smith is very shopworn and clearly a bit mentally muddled (the “you attacked my family” thing against Walker was terrifying and really should not have been glossed over IMO), he is still a very well-rounded martial artist that is respectably skilled everywhere. He can be outgrappled by a safe guard-chilling gameplan, or just by generally being a more powerful striker though, as seen in his multitude of losses in recent years to the likes of Rountree, Walker, Ankalaev, Rakic, and Teixeira.
Those are two routes that Petrino can take, because we’ve already seen him follow those paths on multiple occasions. Whilst that’s clearly enough to deem him the favourite against a clearly declining Smith, this is enough of a step up in competition that I’m not convinced enough by Petrino to get on board with the idea of him being -400. Yes he probably goes and starches Lionheart, but if the finish doesn’t present itself easily then I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see this one turn more competitive than that line indicates. Therefore, -200 to -250 sounds like an appropriate price to me, so it’s no bet.
How I line this fight: Anthony Smith +250 (29%), Vitor Petrino -250 (71%)
Bet or pass: Pass
Prop leans: None
Michel Pereira v Ihor Potieria
This is a pretty simple one to break down. Doesn’t surprise me that it kicks off the main card. This fight makes absolutely no sense from a ranking perspective, but it makes all the sense in the world from a narrative and promotional perspective.
Michel Pereira is one of the hardest non-Heavyweight hitters in the UFC. Ihor Potieria is a bang average fighter that is basically being used as a litmus test for a lot of unproven prospects. He’s a very beatable fighter and the perfect sacrificial lamb to get you an easy UFC win on your record. He was originally scheduled to face Shara Bullet Magomedov, who is definitely flavour of the month. Hell, they even tried to use him as a softball for 40 year old Shogun Rua last year!
Potieria’s recent upset win over Robert Bryczek does demonstrate that he’s got SOME life in him though, but there’s a massive difference between Bryczek and Michel Pereira. Potieria isn’t overly interested in shooting for takedowns either, making this even more of a nightmare fight for him.
Another highlight reel KO for Michel Pereira is expected, and I’d be quite surprised if he didn’t get it here. Therefore, I fully expect that prop to be priced at something around the -150 mark, maybe even steeper.
Took some time for the line to come out but -400 sounds about right in my eyes. I decided to combine Pereira with Mateusz Rebecki on next week’s card. -140 for the double.
How I line this fight: Michel Pereira -450 (82%), Ihor Potieria +450 (18%)
Bet or pass: Potentially on the KO, price dependant
Prop leans: See above
Joaquim Silva v Drakkar Klose
This was the first bet I made on this card, and I placed it a couple of weeks ago when the line was much closer. I bet Drakkar Klose at -137.
I bet against Drakkar Klose when he faced Joe Solecki last time, and I’m still frustrated by how unlikely that finish was. Klose was definitely looking the inferior fighter there, but a moment of brilliance can be all it takes sometimes.
This one seems pretty cut and dry to me. Klose is a well-rounded fighter whose biggest issue had typically been his lack of finishing ability, but he’s still a very reliable fighter that will work hard for 15 minutes. He’s been in competitive fights with the likes of Beneil Dariush, Marc Diakiese, and Bobby Green in his time, and these bouts have spanned across all different realms of MMA. He’s never really done anything that will blow your hair back (aside from being on the receiving end of that amazing KO by Dariush, and the recent slam of Solecki), but I think that makes him a bit underrated. He’s 36 years old now, but he’s never been the fastest fighter, nor has he had a long and gruesome career.
Joaquim Silva has a similar level of experience, but his UFC record paints a different picture by comparison. The calibre of fighters he has lost two really does vary, but a decision loss to Vinc Pichel, as well as being finished by Ricky Glenn and Nasrat Haqparast, doesn’t really fill someone with confidence.
Silva’s most recent win came against 41-year-old Clay Guida, where he clearly lost a round and honestly could have lost the fight with a couple of adjustments. That fight was a terrible look for the -320 favourite, and to me that was a clear indication that he seems to be on the decline. Klose, by comparison, seems to be operating on a similar enough level to how he has done for most of his UFC career. Yes he has taken a step down in competition lately, but he’s performing as you would expect him to.
Statistically, Silva has a negative strike differential, and most of the key metrics are inferior to Klose as well. There’s every chance that this one turns into a barn burner, which would definitely suit the more dangerous Brazilian...but I fully expect Drakkar Klose to put on a typical 15 minute performance, where he settles down into his pace, and mixes in his superior striking and wrestling to coherently win rounds. It probably won’t be the most entertaining fight we’ve ever seen, but a commanding win is perfect for me. A vintage Drakkar Klose performance.
In terms of the betting line, I had Klose capped at around -200. The -137 available was a steal and I was very keen to take it, but I’d definitely be passing on this fight if I was looking at it for the first time now. Another reason why it’s important to keep track of my bet list at the bottom of each post, as I gave this out when -137 was widely available.
How I line this fight: Drakkar Klose -200 (67%), Joaquim Silva +200 (33%)
Bet or pass: 2u Drakkar Klose to Win (-137)
Prop leans: None
Alessandro Costa v Kevin Borjas
Alessandro Costa is a very flawed fighter. Good skills across the board, but the guy’s volume is so, low. I bet against him when he faced Steve Erceg, and that was most of the reason.
He faces Kevin Borjas, who we don’t know much about other than he isn’t as good of a striker than Joshua Van…which doesn’t tell us much at all. He did win a round in that fight, but that’s because Van is a bit of a slow starter and will take some time to get going.
I didn’t do tape on this one because I’m still kind of unsure about Borjas, and the betting line kind of reflects that the books don’t either. He’s a non-committal underdog at +110, where the books think he’s inferior but they don’t believe it with any degree of confidence. That sounds about right to me.
I just hope Costa wins this one so I might get another opportunity to fade him in the future.
How I line this fight: I didn’t tape but it looks about right to me.
Bet or pass: Pass
Prop leans: None
Dione Barbosa v Ernesta Kareckaite
I lost money on Kareckaite’s DWCS fight, in what was brilliant demonstration of why you really shouldn’t bother betting or researching that show. Ernesta basically followed the blueprint I thought Judice was going to use, almost like I’d gotten the fighters the wrong way around. Super high variance when they’re so green.
And we’ve got more green-ness here. Both women have less than 10 professional fights. Barbosa is a -225 underdog. I’d blindly fade that if you had to bet on this fight. Otherwise I’d leave it alone. Take it as an opportunity to learn more about them for next time.
How I line this fight: Don’t know, didn’t tape
Bet or pass: Pass
Prop leans: None
Joanderson Brito v Jack Shore
Banger. This is potentially the most exciting fight on the card, as you have to really high skilled grapplers facing off against one another.
I am convinced that Joanderson Brito is quite overrated. He’s so explosive and dangerous, that it actually makes up for some pretty significant flaws. He’s an awful minute winner, and any opponent that is able to stay safe against him is likely going to win on the scorecards. He has bulldozed three opponents in R1, shown a moment of brilliance against Jonathan Pearce, and been out-hustled by Bill Algeo. That shows a 4-1 UFC record, but all I see is a guy who has actually lost more minutes in the UFC cage than he’s won. I think he’s also getting second hand hype because he beat Diego Lopes on DWCS, and that guy is possibly the most exciting prospect in the UFC right now.
So can Jack Shore stay safe here? Well he’s definitely got the grappling to give it a good go. Just like Jonathan Pearce before him, Shore can use his intense wrestling to stay safe from Brito’s striking. Shore also has good BJJ, which makes me feel confident he can avoid Brito’s opportunistic but ultimately low percentage submission from bottom – at least better than Pearce did.
Obviously the striking is where Brito has a big advantage, and his dangerousness will certainly show itself there in the early goings. Shore hasn’t really fought any dangerous strikers in his UFC tenure so far, so it’s kind of hard to say how well he will fare in those striking moments.
This is one of those fights where breaking down the betting line from a probability perspective just results in an uncomfortable feeling, however you spin it. Brito has more ways to win and is somewhat of a fan favourite, so I can understand why he has the minus next to his number. However, I can really easily see the path to victory for Jack Shore, and I don’t think it’s crazy to say he could go out there and look like a -300 favourite. But then if I think about making Shore the favourite I’m immediately thinking about how dangerous Brito is and how he could easily look -300 as well! It’s a mind fuck.
At the end of the day, the line is relatively close at the moment. Shore sits around +125 which, given he hasn’t fought for a year and is going up against the flavour of the month, I guess I’m okay with. If Shore moves to +140 or better, I think I’ll have to play him. I think he could easily do what Jonathan Pearce or Bill Algeo did. Brito is a boogeyman who is half the fighter he’s hyped up to be if he can’t find a finish.
How I line this fight: Joanderson Brito -110 (52%), Jack Shore +110 (48%)
Bet or pass: Pass, for now
Prop leans: Brito ITD probably the best looking prop available, Jack has too many paths
Elves Brener v Myktkbek Orolbai
Man, what does Elves Brener have to do to catch a break!? Dude steps into the UFC (possibly on short notice?) and gets a win as a massive underdog against Tukhugov, then pulls off another upset against Guram Kutateladze. His opponent pulls out of his third fight and they give him a guy with a 15-1 record. Now he’s 3-0 and you’d finally think they start to give him the chance to build up some hype…but then they go and book him against Myktkbek Orolbai!
For those who haven’t seen Orolbai’s debut against Uros Medic last year, it was definitely one of the best debuts of 2023. He stuck to the Serbian like glue and, despite some persistent get ups, managed to find the submission relatively easily in what was a dominant performance.
Unfortunately, that fight was so one-sided that we don’t really know anything else about Orolbai at this level, as his other recent bouts took place on LFA against guys with 18-14 and 10-7 records.
With no further relevant info, there are too many gaps to form an opinion on Orolbai. What I will say is that Elves Brener has continued to play spoiler so far in his UFC career and continues to be underrated by the books despite that. Does he deserve to be around +200 here? Only if Orolbai is the real deal.
We will get our answers, but there’s no reason to put money on this fight. Anyone who does is putting blind faith in nine minutes of dominance against a Serbian on the mat…or they’re just chatting shit.
How I line this fight: Impossible to say
Bet or pass: Pass
Prop leans: None
Jean Silva v William Gomis
On the subject of underrated fighters, William Gomis features in our next bout. The Frenchman has a very underrated style, one that isn’t going to grab all the highlights or get him clamouring for a main event, but it’s still a very useful one inside the cage. He’s well-rounded, has great kicks to compliment a very technical striking style that goes well with his long frame. I was made first aware of Gomis when he dismantled the overhyped Cage Warriors prospect Tobias Harila. He was calm amongst the chaos, and put in a really professional performance that likely got the ball rolling to eventually earn him a UFC contract. The experience from that fight will serve him well here.
He faces Jean Silva, a very explosive Brazilian that trains with Caio Borralho’s Fighting Nerds. We saw him most recently when he obliterated the vastly inferior Westin Wilson – God knows how that kid got asked to come to the UFC. And they’re giving him a third fight. Really is an embarrassing company at this point.
Before that we saw Silva go 15 minutes on DWCS, and his style looks a lot less impressive when he can’t find a finish. There wasn’t much investment in striking fundamentals, everything was a big action with fight ending intentions. That’s all good when you’re fighting Westin Wilson who blocks punches with his face, but what about when you’re facing a talented kickboxer who prioritises defence and range management? I could very easily see Silva hitting air for 15 minutes.
So I think the line is the wrong way around here, and that William Gomis has the potential to win this one quite comfortable if he can play the matador game. Whilst that sounds like I am gearing up to bet him, I’m actually going to pass on this one currently. He’s only at +110 so it’s not like he’s at a clear underdog price, and considering he’s not the explosive fighter that’s going to be chasing the finish and doing the damage, I think he’s got more of a job to do to impress the judges. Furthermore, we are obviously in Brazil where I think the crowd can certainly emphasise the work that Silva does, which may twist the judges’ arm a bit more.
So there’s value on Gomis, but not enough to warrant a bet. It’s a reluctant pass for me. If there’s major line movement I might play Gomis at like +150, but I doubt it goes that far.
EDIT fight cancelled
How I line this fight: Jean Silva +120 (46%), William Gomis -120 (54%)
Bet or pass: Pass, unless the line moves.

Karolina Kowalkiewicz v Iasmin Lucindo
If Craig v Borralho was a nice gift for me as a bettor, this is possibly my worst nightmare. I’m probably one of KK’s biggest fans, and Iasmin Lucindo is a prospect I am very high on. I bet on these women pretty much every time I can, and I think I’ve actually won money on both Moneylines and Method of Victorys in every fight they’ve both had since I started posting here.
If you read my stuff every week, you’ll know Karolina is my girl. Genuinely my favourite fighter. But I think this is the wake-up call she and I knew was coming eventually. KK’s resurgence has been such an inspiring journey, from getting absolutely brutalised, struggling badly with her mental health, taking the time off and coming back to string together four wins on the trot. That post-fight interview against Herrig was one of my favorite interview moments in UFC history.
But, having said all that, the UFC have been really kind to her. They’ve given her competitive fights that she is capable of winning if she keeps herself together…but Diana Belbita, Vanessa Demopoulos, Silvana Gomez Suarez, and Felice Herrig are certainly a lower calibre within WMMA who have already shown us their ceiling. Iasmin Lucindo is a completely different fighter.
Lucindo is a prospect, pure and simple. She’s got great striking, and great BJJ. I said when she fought Jauregui in her debut that these two could easily meet again in the top 5 of the division in a few years time, and I think her sophomore performance against Polyana Viana showed that (I bet her quite heavily in that one). Viana’s trash and it was the perfect matchup for her, but there’s reason to believe that this one could be too.
Kowalkiewicz’s resurgence has relied on her fighting opponents that mostly want to strike, and even if not, the wrestling of these women has been at a level she could handle…I don’t expect that to be the case against Lucindo. Iasmin has an advantage in speed, and age/youthfulness as 16 years the junior. We know that plays a massive part in fights, and I expect it to here. Karolina isn’t particularly good on the mat if those takedowns, but we just haven’t seen it for some time. If Lucindo gets top time, I think she probably manouvres her way to a submission with relative ease.
Of course, this one is much more competitive if they choose to strike, as Karolina’s got the right blend of determination, volume, and technique to keep any B grade or lower striker honest over the course of three rounds. Lucindo’s not the most amazing striker I have ever seen, but I also don’t expect her to be outclassed by Kowalkiewicz either. In WMMA, if you don’t have a unique striking style such as power or suffocating pressure (which neither girl has), then there’s only so much you can really do at this level to separate yourself as the superior striker. If they fight 100 rounds on the feet, I wouldn’t expect either woman to win more than 65 of the 100 times.
So that’s the key bit of information when looking at the betting line here. I know Lucindo deserves to be a significant favourite, due to youthfulness and a style that finally doesn’t actually suite her Polish opponent…but Karolina is sound enough to easily make this one competitive. If Lucindo doesn’t show a significant urgency or even desire to shoot takedowns, or if Karolina can stuff them, then this one looks much closer to a 50/50ish fight on the feet.
Whilst that sounds like I’m leaning towards playing my girl Karolina Kowalkiewicz, I’m unfortunately not. It’s impossible to really say how much success Lucindo is going to have with her takedown attempts here, so I can’t clearly quantify how much of a favourite she could be. If she can land them with ease, she might look -500. If she can’t land them at all, she could look +100. Compared to the -300 betting line we are getting, that definitely sounds like a pass. If you’re someone who likes to bet on every fight for the fun of it, a roll of the dice on Kowalkiewicz definitely isn’t the worst idea.
However, I will be keeping an eye out for that Lucindo by Submission prop. I doubt I’d get a good line on it with her being -300, but there’s always a chance the books get caught napping because it’s WMM and they expect a decision. We’ll see, I’d probably take +200 or better.
How I line this fight: Iasmin Lucindo -200 (66%), Karolina Kowalkiewicz +200 (33%)
Bet or pass: Pass on the ML, might bet Lucindo by Submission if I get a nice price (I’m talking +225 or better)
Prop leans: See above
Mauricio Ruffy v Jamie Mullarkey
Mauricio Ruffy has won all of his professional fights via KO, and has fought quite a few cans in his day. He is the -160 favourite and is obviously very undeserving of that price tag against a guy with a decent amount of UFC experience.
Jamie Mullarkey is very unreliable, has bad fight IQ, and just generally isn’t very good. Dude lost a striking fight to Michael Johnson and got KO’d by Nasrat Haqparast – two things I thought were very hard to do in this day and age.
Pick your poison. Or don’t, and just be smart and leave this fight alone.
How I line this fight: who knows

Ismael Bonfim v Vinc Pichel
Ismael Bonfim returns from what was originally a massive upset at the hands of Benoit Saint Denis last July, but thankfully for him the Frenchman’s performances since have helped that result age well, as he elevated himself to prospect status and faced Poirier.
I was sadly all aboard the Ismael Bonfim hype train, as I deemed his debut win over Terrance McKinney as arguable the debut of the year for 2023. McKinney’s actually been fraud checked a fair bit since then so that win has coincidentally aged badly on the reverse. Nonetheless, I still think this Bonfim is good and will eventually turn into a top 15 fighter (not like his brother, an overrated fraud that I faded against Nicholas fucking Dalby).
Either way, the UFC are trying to run the Ismael Bonfim hype back again by pitting him against a 40 year old Vinc Pichel, who they’re probably just looking to get off the books as he likely has a contract that pays far more than he’s worth (by the 10/10 standard, anyway). Pichel is old but not particularly shop worn due to lack of commitment to his MMA career. He’s a well-rounded guy that always seems to end up in grappling-based fights. He has been competitive with the likes of Mark Madsen, Austin Hubbard, Jim Miller and Roosevelt Roberts in recent years, which kind of paints the picture that he’s capable but limited.
I think it’s fair to assume that Ismael Bonfim really should have Pichel covered here. He’s the way more dangerous fighter, and will be the one having moments of success where he threatens to finish. Outside of some sort of massive cardio dump, I think he can either find a finish or competently win 2/3 rounds with relative ease.
He’s -400 on the betting line so the odds clearly reflect that. I definitely wouldn’t be interested in playing him at that number, seeing as he’s returning from a massive setback and may not be the same as he once was. I could see him winning via all three potential methods of victory, so I’m not really sure a bet is possible here.
How I line this fight: Ismael Bonfim -400 (80%), Vinc Pichel +400 (20%)

2024.04.08 20:28 CP4-Throwaway A rough estimate of celebs that may seem more X, M, or Y from Famous Birthdays, based on the widest definition of my personal transitional Gen Y/Anadigital/Xennial/MilleXer microgeneration, b. circa 1977-1985 (UPDATED)

Just for context, in this specific post:
X = Gen X
Y = Cusp
M = Millennial
This is a repost from the original (which was an extension of the very original post here) that I did a few years back, just to be updated for 2024 because I thought it'd be to fun to explore this again.
But I will exclude the 1984-1985 list because that'd be way too long. I'll add them in the comment sections. So in this post, I'll focus on the celebrities born from 1977-1983.
I know the vast majority of this sub will disagree but I'll post it anyway.
This is based on the vibes and/or appearance of the celebrity so please don't take this too seriously as this may or may not be accurate, depending on one's view of Gen X and Millennials.
This is based on my current perception of these celebrities.
WARNING: THIS POST WILL BE SUPER LONG!!! DISCRETION ADVISED!!!!!!
