2024.06.08 21:32 WinesburgOhio June 7, 1975: Allen Iverson was born.

7x All-NBA (3/3/1)
‘01 MVP (3x Top-5 voting, 7x Top-10)
11x All-Star (2x ASG MVP)
‘97 Rookie of the Year
1) Memories of Iverson have gotten so simplified so quickly, I’m afraid he’s little more than “an inefficient gunner who was fast and once stepped over Tyronn Lue” to many fans today. Iverson is difficult to summarize or explain with any amount of words, so I’ll start by listing some things he makes me think of: a) playing Ninja Gaiden as Sonic the Hedgehog, b) the intensity of a cornered wolverine on all-fight-no-flight mode, c) the unflinching persistence of Melville’s Bartleby, but at the opposite end of the kinetic energy spectrum, d) Iggy Pop’s early on-stage performances, e) the quick-twitch ballance of a squirrel, f) the numerous Tupac interviews that showed skeptical non-fans that his “thuggishness” belied a deep thoughtfulness, g) a kamikaze pilot, h) the unsettling gaze of a death row inmate on his final walk.
2) Iverson’s cultural significance was bigger and arguably more important than his on-court career. He didn’t “introduce” hip-hop culture and its aesthetic to the NBA, but he became the face of that part of the Venn diagram. AI stood out because of his cornrows, numerous tattoos, extra baggy wardrobe, flashy jewelry, and the “questionable shadiness” of some members of his entourage, plus the raw directness with which he spoke was not what the league higher-ups wanted from its most popular player. It didn’t help that his background was marked by four months in jail while in high school because of a high-profile bowling alley brawl, but any objective person can see in retrospect how racist and pointed the “investigation” into that event was.
Commissioner David Stern put a player dress code into place because of Iverson, and AI was an interesting litmus test of sorts for most of the top voices in the media or authority figures in the NBA (the vast majority of both groups being middle aged or older white guys) to exhibit how rigidly “old school” they really were. As a perpetual target–including by many referees–Iverson’s popularity rose even higher, and he became maybe the most fully embraced sports figure by black America since Muhammad Ali.
3) His desire to win cannot be questioned, as he seemed to be having an existential, life-or-death crisis every game. Iverson played through numerous awful injuries (he popularized the wearing of compression sleeves), and the grit and determination he demonstrated made his teammates try harder, a bigger accomplishment than he usually gets credit for. AI was listed at 6-ft-0 and 165 pounds–he was neither–yet he flew into the lane with reckless abandon, and his body paid the price. He was beloved by teammates and fans for this because his slight stature made him the ultimate underdog (plus for how league higher-ups seemed to despise him). The media got on Iverson for his lax practice habits, but he needed the rest because of his injuries and how hard he played in games; Bill Russell did the same thing, by the way.
The problem was that his desire to win appeared to manifest itself as him wanting to do it all. Iverson rarely trusted his teammates (Philly’s front office certainly didn’t do him any favors), so he saw the path to victory as going directly through himself. It’s like he was thinking, “I’m a great scorer, so I should score as much as possible. I’m a great ball thief, so I should go for every steal.” It was hard for Iverson to see past this mentality, similar to a football defensive end who goes all out to rush the QB every play no matter what the situation or team scheme, so AI’s style of play often didn’t align itself with the best path to team glory, even if he thought it did.
4) Iverson was drafted in 1996 by a horrid Sixers team that hadn't topped 26 wins since the Barkley trade in '92, and hadn't been to the playoffs since '91. The roster was BAAAAAD. They made it into the playoffs in 1999, and Philly was respectable for five straight seasons (‘99-03), finishing over .500 and reaching the playoffs each year, and then usually making noise in the postseason (twice beating a higher seed in Round 1, never losing to a lower seed, and they squeaked into the Finals as the East’s #1 seed in ‘01).
You can think what you want about his awful shooting efficiencies and his often surly connections with his team, but the fact that he made the Sixers as good as they were for those five years was a herculean accomplishment that no other wing of that era could have topped in the same setting (not Carter, not McGrady, not Kobe).
Philly’s front office overreached and overpaid for almost everyone who took the court with Iverson, and it was not a good set of teammates for him. Had he switched places with Kobe in the late-90s and got to spend his prime with a great center like Shaq, Iverson would have had at least those three rings LA won and possibly more because I find it more likely that he would have meshed well with Shaq.
5) As you likely already know, his primary strengths were absurd speed and athleticism (best in NBA history) and his prolific scoring ability (four scoring titles, career 27 ppg, 30 ppg from ‘00-06). Iverson’s incredible shiftiness mixed with his “I’m going to embarrass you” mindset and elite hesitation crossover made him a nightmare to defend 1-on-1, and he attracted so much attention flying into the lane that he was able to create opportunities for his teammates. Iverson hit more tough buckets in traffic than almost any player ever, especially at the ends of games when his confidence and aggression earned a bunch of clutch wins.
His inconsistent shooting was well known (career 42% FG, 31% 3FG), so he was more than capable of shooting his team out of contests as he’d angrily go into “I’ll outscore everyone” mode. AI was regularly top-5 in spg, but he was also regularly top-10 in topg, and it’s been said more than a few times that he often played out of control.
6) Iverson might be more associated with a single season (‘01) than any other star ever. He led the league in scoring (31.1 ppg), steals (2.5 spg), won MVP in a landslide over peak Shaq and Duncan, carried a not-Finals-worthy team to the best record in the East (56-26) and into the Finals, and once there he had his most iconic game (Game 1: unexpected Sixers win in OT in LA over the HEAVILY favored Lakers by racking up 48 pts and 5 steals, plus AI had multiple clutch plays including the Ty Lue step-over bucket in the final minute of OT). It's the season we think of when we think of Iverson.
7) There were persistent discussions by the fans, media, and front office about him being traded away from the Sixers due to some combination of bad fit, bad attitude, crazy lifestyle, and bad shooting efficiencies, especially after the team fell off a cliff following the '03 season (Iverson missed 34 games in '04 as the team went 33-49). He was finally traded to Denver during the ‘07 season, and he was thisclose to being traded to the Pistons in 2000 (a clause in Matt Geiger’s contract stopped the deal), right before his amazing ‘01 season.
8) The pairing of high scorers Iverson and Carmelo Anthony in Denver was a really big deal at the time, seen as a duo who each demanded double teams and would cripple opposing defenses. In an expected-by-many twist, their two best scoring seasons together (‘07 and ‘08) were not the team’s best seasons, and they never won a playoff series together.
9) As fun as it was for fans to watch Vince Carter's post-prime career as he graciously accepted supporting roles on multiple teams, Iverson's post-prime career was really hard to watch as he kept demanding a central role on multiple teams well after his athleticism was no longer next-level. Whether it was his last partial season in Denver, his time in Detroit, his three games in Memphis, his curtain call in Philly, or even his two months on a second-tier Turkish team, Iverson’s days after ‘08 were cringey and unfortunate.

2024.06.08 15:11 The_Sunhunter The Mythology of the Eikons #10.) Ultimalius

The Circle of Malius tapestry depicting Ultima Risen looking down upon seven of its elemental Eikons
“Have you learned nothing!? Damned is the slave who would turn the scourge upon his master.” -Ultima
Hello and welcome to my final post on the mythological inspirations for the Eikons of Final Fantasy XVI. If you would like to read any of my previous posts on the Eikons, you can find them here:

1.) Phoenix

2.) Ifrit

3.) Shiva

4.) Ramuh

5.) Garuda

6.) Titan

7.) Bahamut

8.) Odin

9.) Leviathan

With the conclusion of the Echoes of the Fallen and the Rising Tide expansions, our protagonist Clive Rosfield finally reunites the power of the Eikons and realizes his full potential as the conduit for Ultima’s ambitions; and thus attains a form of apotheosis through the reward of Ultima’s divine abilities. As such, I figured I should do one more post, this time on Ultima itself. Though it is mostly an original character, there are still a lot of real-world religious themes baked into Ultima’s character that makes for a thematically poignant villain. As always, I am no expert and if you feel like I may have said something incorrect or if you feel that I missed something; by all means please let me know in the comments as I would love to start a discussion with you on these topics. I would also like to give a shout out to u/H-HGM-N who asked me to make a post on Ultima a while ago. I hope you all like it!
The main antagonist of Final Fantasy XVI, Ultima is a member of a race of extraterrestrial-like beings that share a single consciousness and identity. The Ultima collective were the first to discover the manipulation of aether, the quintessence of life, through magickal feats and with it, the Blight that would swallow their homeland. Driven by desperation, sixteen of the remaining Ultimas divested themselves of their deteriorating physical forms and embarked on a voyage to the land that would be known as Valisthea. Here, Ultima formed the Mothercrystals in order to siphon the realm’s aether for the purpose of weaving a spell that would resurrect its species and remake the world. Ultima also created mankind to act as stewards for its Mothercrystals, imbuing the members of the tribes that centralized around these glassy formations with elemental affinities; giving rise to what would eventually become the Dominants and Eikons. All of this was done in the hopes that successive generations of humans would produce a suitable body for Ultima to inhabit that could withstand the massive amount of aether required to cast the revivification spell; its perfect vessel, its Mythos. As the Mothercrystal Dzemekys resided in relatively close proximity to Origin, the metaphorical ark that ferried Ultima to possible salvation; the Children of Dzemekys, the Motes of Darkness that cultivated around this Mothercrystal regularly communed with their creator, starting a religion dedicated to Ultima called the Circle of Malius. One of the prominent beliefs of this faith was that of the Savior Myth, which prophesied that “...on some future day of reckoning, the incarnation of the lord would appear among mankind and remake the world; that the advent of this incarnation would be heralded by the emergence of several heavenly servants of great might; that the lord’s faithful should rally these servants together in order to bring the incarnation into being; and that for their loyalty, they would be rewarded with the greatest gladness”.
From this background information, as well as the names of many of Ultima’s attacks and Eikonic abilities, such as Holy, Voice of God, Aureoles, Proselytize, Purgatorium, Ascension, and Flames of Creation; we can start to see the parallels between Ultima and Mythos with the Judeo-Christian God of the Old Testament and Jesus Christ, the earthly incarnation of God and the Messiah according to the followers of Christianity. With its status as the originator of the human race, it is quite clear that Ultima is based on the idea of a creator deity, an often primeval and beneficent god in monotheistic and polytheistic belief systems that functions as a creatio ex nihilo explanation for the formation of the universe, the planet, or the existence of human life. Some examples of creator gods include the Sumerian Enki, who fashioned humanity from clay to act as servants to the gods in the story Enki and Nimnah; the Shinto kami Izanagi and Izanami, who formed the islands of Japan (Kuniumi) by churning the Pacific Ocean with their heavenly spear according to the Kojiki; and the Norse sons of Borr, that being Odin, Vili, and Vé who not only formed the mortal realm of Midgard from the primordial giant Ymir’s body, but also created the first two humans Ask and Embla.
Bearing similarities to the creation myth presented in the Babylonian Enūma Eliš; the first of the five books of the Hebrew Torah, that being the Book of Genesis, states in verses 1:1-2:3 that Yahweh, or Elohim Adonai “God the Lord” is yet another creator deity, being the grand architect of existence that created the world and all life on it in the span of six days. The first two humans made by God on the sixth day of creation, Adam and Eve, resided in the Garden of Eden where they were instructed not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Tempted by a serpent into disobeying their promise to God, Eve and Adam ate from the tree; resulting in their expulsion from paradise and the advent of sin or the “fall of man”. The subsequent generations born from the first two humans tainted the world, and as such, God sought to rebuild what He made by washing away the corruption with a great flood, mirroring older Mesopotamian deluge myths such as the one alluded to in the Epic of Gilgamesh. Verses 11:1-9 in the Book of Genesis mention that in the time after the Flood, Nimrod, the great-grandson of the Flood survivor Noah, led the newly united human race into constructing a ziggurat tower in the land of Shinar that reached up to the sky. Viewing this act as an affront to His lordship, God dispersed the human race across the Earth and created numerous languages so that humanity could never again unite and elevate themselves to godhood; dubbing this monument to the disorganization of the human race as the Tower of Babel.
These themes of mortal hubris, impiety, and the divine retribution for these disrespectful acts is also present in Final Fantasy XVI. During the time of the Fallen, an ancient race of technologically-advanced humans, a vicious war was fought for control over the Mothercrystals called the War of the Magi. The Fallen conducted horrific experiments within a literal and metaphorical ivory tower called the Sagespire, transmuting organic matter into inorganic crystals in the hopes of creating their own Mothercrystal and attaining godhood. The Fallen also constructed airships as well as machines designed to combat the Ultima collective and those who would defend the Mothercrystals. These machines, called Eikonoklastes, are named after the term “iconoclast”, which means a person who destroys or attacks religious images or beliefs. One such Eikonklaste was the Omega-I model, which is not only a recurring superboss) in the Final Fantasy series, but also has several neat Christian references associated with it. For instance, during the fight with Omega Aionios, the hostile machine can do an attack called Pantokrator. This is referring to the Christ Pantokrator, a mostly Eastern Orthodox or Eastern Catholic depiction of a stern but benevolent “Christ the Almighty” or “Christ the All-Powerful”; with the Western Christian equivalent being Christ in Majesty. Another religious reference comes from the trophy received by the player for creating the Omega Weapon, called My Reward is With Me; with this phrase originating from verses 22:12-13 in the Book of Revelation as spoken by Jesus Christ, saying; “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last”. This is also referenced in the description of the Ultima Weapon that says “‘His word was the first, so shall it be the last.’ - Eikonomachy - Genesis 3:11”.
Much like the Greek story of Icarus flying too close to the Sun and falling to his death as a result, the rebellion against Ultima culminated in the Sins of Dzemekys; in which the Fallen invaded the eponymous Mothercrystal located in southern Storm to claim the giant formation as their own, but Ultima struck them down and destroyed the Mothercrystal, leaving a giant crater behind as a testament to the dangers of challenging the gods. This act not only echoes (pun intended) the Tower of Babel parable and the story of original sin as discussed by ProfNoctis and M. J. Gallagher in the video “Final Fantasy XVI Lecture Stream: A Conversation with MJ Gallagher on Faith, Fables, and the Fallen”; but the Sins of Dzemekys also inadvertently caused the forced emigration of the Children of Dzemekys to the continent outside of Valisthea in an unfortunate subversion of the Book of Exodus story of the Israelites, the chosen people of God, departing from Egypt in search of the Promised Land. This transgression committed by the Fallen against Ultima led the being to become what is known in comparative mythology as the deus otiosus, or the “idle god”. Ultima abandoned its creations, becoming dormant until Clive Rosfield awoke as the Dominant of the Infernal Eikon Ifrit and Ultima’s Mythos hundreds if not thousands of years later.
The fly in the ointment, however, is that Ultima never cared for its creations, its humanity, in the first place. The Savior Myth propagated by Ultima, the ancient Circle of Malius, and it's more modern offshoot Savior Cults in Waloed speak of “The Raise”, the ascension of the faithful into paradise for aiding the lord’s incarnation (Mythos) during the end of the world called the Arche (another term for Primogenesis). This idea is an obvious parallel to the evangelical Christian belief in the Rapture most likely originating from the verses 24:36-44 in the Gospel of Matthew and 4:15-17 in the First Epistle to the Thessalonians, whereby during an end-time event either before or during the period of the Great Tribulation that will precede the Second Coming of Christ; the faithful, living and dead, will rise up into the sky and join God in the eternal paradise of Heaven. However, the myth surrounding the Raise is a farce; as the Raise is actually the spell that Ultima intends to cast using Mythos to remake the world. Having served their purpose, Ultima will no longer have need of the human race alongside its resurrected people, meaning that the birth of the new world also spells the death of humanity. Furthermore, the process of Primogenesis, as the name implies, is meant to revert mankind to a prior, “purer” state of being by stripping the wills and higher brain functions of man and beast alike through the metaphorical ritual cleansing of aether floods. Numerous times in the game, Ultima comments on the “threads of consciousness” to Clive and states how it must untangle him from these threads and empty the vessel if Clive is to become its Mythos. These “threads of consciousness” most likely refer to human willpower, a sense of self, and empathy. The greatest affront to Ultima, the reason why it abandoned mankind, was because of their unforeseen development of sentience and free will. These concepts are alien to Ultima, as its entire race shares a single mind, a single identity, a single goal. In fact, Ultima only refers to itself with plural self-descriptors such as “us”, “we”, or “our” and displays a jarringly flat affect up until the final battle, where all of the Ultimas combine into the singular, angelic form of Ultimalius.
Given its rejection of mankind’s autonomy, as well as the fact that the being itself and the majority of the confrontations with it are some sort of mental abstraction; through a metatextual viewpoint it could be argued that Ultima is a twisted manifestation of the Jungian concept of the Collective Unconscious; a pull towards maladaptive conformity and unity, thereby acting as the antithesis to one of FFXVI’s major themes regarding the importance of individuality and freedom. In stark contrast to the popularly held belief in the tabula rasa, the idea that people are born as “blank slates” that are then shaped by their sensory experiences, Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung and the adherents of analytical psychology proposed that the Collective Unconscious is an inherited instinctual framework for understanding the world beyond conscious awareness that is present in all humans from birth. Jung argued that the Collective Unconscious manifests as archetypes, recurring images and ideas that can be seen propagating in various distinct cultures, allowing for one to make sense of one’s environment through familiar motifs. Jung believed that the similarities between many of the world’s mythological figures and events correspond to these universal archetypes; such as the aformentioned deluge myth motif or the pattern of the king of the gods often being a senex sky father. We can actually see this idea in Final Fantasy XVI in the form of the Eikons, which like the Eidolons) of Final Fantasy IX, are reflections of a given culture’s shared beliefs and experiences manifesting as a centralized figure of veneration for said culture; acting as the godhead of Ultima and the Mothercrystals. For instance, the Motes of Water originally hailed from the coast of southern Ash near the Mothercrystal Drake’s Horn and the river called the Ceaseless Rill, and as such their Eikon embodies the aspects of the water they were constantly surrounded by; that being the sea serpent Leviathan.
Jung believed that individuation, the process by which an individual develops a sense of self, first starts by consciously confronting and integrating aspects of the unconscious such as the Persona), the individual’s perceived role in society; the dualistic gender dynamics within each individual known as the Anima and Animus; and the uncomfortable and reprehensible aspects of an individual’s psyche) called the Shadow). By denying this process through the use of Primogenesis, Ultima keeps humanity under its thumb as an unenlightened slave race complacent in their own self-destruction. We witness this self-realization process for Clive, this transformation into Logos and denial of Ultima’s conformist Mythos, begin when he confronts his Infernal Shadow and accepts the truth of his role in the calamity that transpired at Phoenix Gate; which I think is beautifully demonstrated by the fact that Clive’s inner demon is the literal demon Ifrit.
The words Mythos and Logos are both of Greek origin and roughly mean “myth/story” and “reason, discourse, or word”, respectively. The use of Logos in FFXVI is interesting in that this word also has a theological connotation to it. In the Christian Bible, such as in verse 1:1 of the Gospel of John, Logos) is used to refer to Jesus Christ as the “Word of God”, being the preeminent representative of God’s divine creative presence and a member of the Holy Trinity as God the Son. Similarly to Logos, the Greek word Rhema means “utterance” or “something said”, with the Septuagint, the Koine Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, using both logos and rhema interchangeably when referring to the Word of God; which may explain why the crystals acquired from completing the circles of the Kairos Gate are called Rhema. To Ultima, Logos represents both the ruination of its divine vision of a new world for its own as well as the invictus) or “unconquerable” savior of mankind, with Clive ultimately sacrificing himself so that humanity may learn from their mistakes and build a better world where everyone can live on their own terms. Similarly, as discussed in the four gospels of the New Testament, Jesus was arrested, crucified, and resurrected; with this seen as a sacrifice on the Messiah’s part to serve as an example of how to achieve atonement and salvation for the misguided masses of Jerusalem.
In his video “Ultima - A Deconstruction of Villainy”, YouTuber FatBrett makes a very interesting comparison between Ultima and the protagonist of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus. In her novel, Dr. Victor Frankenstein experiments with bringing life to dead tissue through galvanic and chemical processes. The scientist succeeds, essentially playing the part of God by creating a new form of life, but upon doing so is horrified and disgusted by the Creature, spurning his creation and eventually seeks out its destruction as it takes revenge for its abandonment. I bring this up because I would like to pay particular attention to the subtitle of Shelley’s novel, the Modern Prometheus, as this harkens back to the Greek story of the Titan Prometheus; who as a patron deity of humanity gifted mankind fire in defiance of the Olympian king Zeus, and as a result is eternally punished for his disobedience. In terms of the title of Mary Shelley’s novel, the Prometheus name, like the story of Icarus and FFXVI’s Fallen, is used to evoke the idea of a character that oversteps their bounds and is thusly punished for their arrogance. However, I would argue that this is only one aspect of the Prometheus myth. Through another lens, Prometheus could be seen as an example of the “nobel rebel” archetype, an individual who fights for an oppressed group in defiance of the injustices of a tyrannical system or individual, often in the hopes of making a positive change through their rebellion.
Prometheus’ theft of fire, while a sleight against the ruling pantheon that incurred a great cost, represents the gift of civilization and the boon of freedom that knowledge bestows; making it so that mankind would no longer solely rely on the gods for aid. We can also see a similar scenario play out in the Genesis story of Adam and Eve. While humanity lost access to paradise on Earth, they gained freedom in the form of self-awareness and knowledge equatable to that of the divine. These sentiments are also shared by the Ophites, who viewed the serpent in the Genesis narrative as a liberator of mankind from the control of a malevolent creator. Several critical analyses of John Milton’s characterization of a sympathetic Satan in his 17th century epic poem Paradise Lost also somewhat align with these viewpoints. Likewise, our protagonist Clive Rosfield, our nobel rebel and Dominant of the demonic Eikon Ifrit, defies the slave-master hierarchy of Valisthea before setting his sights on the ultimate slaver; denying Ultima its Mythos, its fantasy, by gifting mankind with its champion of free will, equality, and compassion; its Logos. And as I see it, in the end Clive succeeds in his crusade against tyranny not by killing Ultima, but by removing magick from the world, since the use of magick was the root cause of humanity’s enslavement, both from themselves and from their God.
Ultima’s apathetic disposition towards its creations, like Dr. Frankenstein, mirrors the Gnostic beliefs regarding their Demiurge or “Creator” named Yaldabaoth. Gnosticism is a collection of various esoteric Jewish and Christian sects that started possibly around the 2nd Century AD or earlier, with one of the primary beliefs shared by these disparate groups being that material existence was born from a mistake, and as such it is an existence of suffering and wickedness that can only be alleviated by coming to terms with and understanding the essence of the material and the spiritual; a process of personal enlightenment called gnosis. To elaborate further, according to accounts such as those found from the Nag Hammadi Library and the theologian Valentinus), there exists a spiritual realm of light which encompasses the totality of the immutable Supreme Being; the Monad), Bythos, or “the One”. From this Plemora, this immaterial plane, arrived the first emanation of the One, that being the hermaphroditic Barbēlō from which further personified divine principles of the mind called Aeons) descended, with these principles often being in male-female pairings called syzygies. It is worth noting that the hierarchical structure of the Aeon lineage#/media/File:Aeons.png) bears some resemblance to the Jewish Kabbalist diagram of the Tree of Life), which consists of the ten emanations of the Ein Sof, the “infinite divinity”, called the Sefirot. The Kabbalist Tree of Life just so happens to also resemble the sword-like symbol that not only can be seen on the Arete Stone in the Hideaway, but also appears when the Ultimas converge into Ultimalius at the end of the game as shown here in this post by u/Physianower. Anyways, the final emanation of the Gnostic Monad is Sophia) (Wisdom) who has no partner, and as such, leaves the light of the Plemora in search of one; resulting in the inadvertent asexual birth of Yaldabaoth. Ignorant to the existence of the Plemora and the Monad, Yaldabaoth believes itself to be the Supreme Being and creates matter, the universe, and all life within it; becoming the Demiurge.
Given that Gnosticism derives from divergent Judeo-Christian ideals, it should come as no surprise that Yaldabaoth was considered synonymous with the Old Testament’s Yahweh. While the followers of the Valentinian version of Gnosticism viewed the Demiurge as ignorant and flawed, other Gnostic sects, such as the Ophite, Sethian, and Archontic systems viewed the Creator as more of a malevolent figure that not only demanded reverence, but also inadvertently denied humans access to the Plemora and Sophia through their flawed mortal existence. As such, the only way for an individual to escape this entrapment is by undergoing the transcendental process of gnosis, allowing the divine essence within each person’s soul to be released, becoming what is known as a Pneumatic). This is similar to the Hindu concept of attaining liberation (moksha or nirvana) from the reincarnation cycle of Saṃsāra through the process of acquiring jñāna, or an understanding of the true self (Ātman)); which I find interesting as the alternative name for the Ultima Weapon superboss) from the SNES version of Final Fantasy VI is the Atma Weapon). Like Yaldabaoth, Ultima’s use of Primogenesis in Final Fantasy XVI prevents mankind from undergoing gnosis, while Clive as Logos acts as the metaphorical shepherd that enlightens humanity and guides it back to the light of the Plemora, which the Gnostics believed was Jesus’ role as well.
I should also mention that Yaldabaoth was typically viewed as a zoomorphic serpentine entity with a lion’s head, as shown here, while Hippolytus of Rome claimed that Simon Magus, the supposed founder of Gnosticism, also attributed fiery properties to the Demiurge, parroting verse 12:29 from the Epistle to the Hebrews, “...for our God is a consuming fire”. I think it's no coincidence that Ultima’s original physical body is the fiery Ifrit Risen, which has a feline face and a reptilian body. Furthermore, Ifrit Risen is actually the combined form of the two Eikons of Fire; Ifrit and Phoenix. In my first post on the Phoenix, I mentioned that the logo artwork for FFXVI by artist Yoshitaka Amano, which depicts the pivotal moment where the two Eikons of Fire duke it out beneath Phoenix Gate, looks similar to the Chinese symbol of yin and yang, which represents complementary opposites that provide a state of equilibrium. Ifrit Risen, like the Gnostic Aeons and Carl Jung’s conception of the Anima and Animus, is a syzygic pairing, a union of opposites. I would propose that while not a literal divine hermaphrodite, this unbreakable bond between the brothers Clive and Joshua Rosfield, who are likened to the twins Prometheus and Epimetheus in the song “Away”, could be seen as something similar to the hermaphroditic metaphor for the end product of the alchemical Magnum Opus) (Great Work) called the Rebis.
If you would consider this alchemical perspective, then I would like to further suggest that perhaps that Ifrit Risen is an allusion to the final stage of the Magnum Opus called Rubedo (reddening); whereby the given alchemical material has already undergone the stages of Nigredo (putrefaction), Albedo) (purification), and Citrinitas (spiritual awakening/transformation) just as Ifrit Risen is the combination of the destructive and restorative aspects of fire that attains sacred wholeness through its union. It just so happens that the stage of Rubedo was also occasionally represented through the symbol of a phoenix) and Carl Jung himself likened the four stages of the Magnum Opus to the process of individuation. It is also possible that like the Prometheus story, fire as the element of the divine could be a symbol for knowledge, free will, rebellion, and human ingenuity; or as I have also mentioned in my post on the Phoenix, could be based on the idea of the Empyrean. In Dante Alighieri’s Paradiso#The_Empyrean), the Empyrean is the highest realm of Heaven consisting of sacred fire where the wills of man and God become one; achieving what the Gnostics would most likely call the Anima Mundi or “World Soul”. And just like the Plemora and the Empyrean, the Nexus of Ultima’s Origin is bathed in the light of the aether harvested from all across Valisthea, but like the name of the eponymous song, it is a far cry from Heaven.
Well, this is it. I’m sad to say that my posts on Final Fantasy XVI are most likely finally over, but like ProfNoctis and M. J. Gallagher said in their video on the Echoes of the Fallen DLC, the amount of research the team at Square Enix did for this game is absolutely astounding, and I can’t thank them enough for this gem of a game that allowed me to write so much in these essays.
If you would like to watch some more videos regarding Ultima, Mythos, and Logos; I would recommend “Final Fantasy XVI - LOGOS EXPLAINED” by C. J. Cala, “Final Fantasy XVI Lecture Stream: The True Meaning of Mythos and Logos” by ProfNoctis, and “The story of Ultima explained Final Fantasy 16 Lore” by Alleyway Jack. If you would like to research more about Jungian analytical psychology, I would suggest checking out “The Collected Works of C. G. Jung”. Or if you would like to play another game that deals with Jungian psychology, world mythologies, Gnosticism, Kabbalah, and themes of rebellion and freedom; then look no further than the excellent Persona 5.
And I can’t thank you all enough for reading my posts. It means so much that you would allow me to indulge in this little passion project of mine and I sincerely hope that I was able to at least instill a little more appreciation of this game and our world in at least one person. I would love to hear your thoughts on the topics discussed and I hope you have a wonderful day!

2024.06.08 12:04 Either_Store_2573 15 facts about the Simpsons

  1. Astronauts can actually watch “Deep Space Homer” on the International Space Station.
  2. In “BART of Darkness” when Nelson “Hey Bart, your epidermis is showing, epidermis means hair so technically it’s true” Epidermis actually means skin.
    1. In “Homer the great” this is Homer Revenge list: Bill of Rights, Grandpa, Fat Free Lard, Gravity, Darwin,H2Whoa!!, Billy Crystal, God, Soloflex, The Boy, Stern Lecture Plumbing, Econosave.
  3. In “Bart vs Australia” The bullfrogs taking over Australia and destroying all the crops is a reference to the cane toad, originally introduced to Australia in order to protect sugar canes from the cane beetle, but became a pest in the country.
  4. In “A Star Is born” A deleted scene shows the residents of Springfield Retirement Castle making a risqué movie titled What the Pool Boy Saw to enter in the Springfield Film Festival.
  5. In “The Springfield Connection” When Marge gets her first assignment as a police officer, chief Wiggum says her beat is Junkyville and Bumtown. In the next scene Marge is seen walking in front of Junkytown legal clinic.
  6. Lemon of Troy is 1 of Matt Groening favourite episodes.
  7. In “Radioactive Man” In the auditions for Fallout Boy, Bart is rejected because he is apparently an inch too short and Milhouse is accepted; however, Bart is taller than Milhouse.
  8. In “Kingsize Homer” Faye Dunaway had previously refused a guest role on the show. As a revenge, the writers stuck her in a goofy film that would be considered underneath her calibre of work (that Homer tried to see) called Honk If You're Horny! with Pauly Shore.
  9. In “22 Shorts Film about Springfield” The episode sparked the idea amongst the staff for a spin-off series entitled Springfield Stories or simply Springfield. The proposed show would focus on the town in general, rather than the Simpson family. Every week would be a different scenario, such as three short stories, an adventure with young Homer, or a story about a background character that was not tied into the Simpson family at all. The idea never resulted in anything, as Matt Groening realized that the staff did not have the manpower to produce another show as well as The Simpsons. The staff maintains that it is something that they would still be interested in doing, and that it "could happen someday."
  10. Hank Scorpio was planned to return as the villain of The Simpsons Movie (2007), but the creators decided that he was too likable to turn into a full-blown villain. The movie's actual villain, Russ Cargill, is also voiced by Albert Brooks.
  11. In “The Mysterious Voyage of our Homer” Homer waking up on a golf course was a reference to something that happened to a friend of the producers, who blacked out, and woke up on a golf course. He had to buy a map from 7-Eleven in order to find out where he was. He discovered that not only was he in a different town, but he was also in a different state. He then had to walk several miles in order to get back to his friend's house, which was the last place he remembered being the night before.
  12. In “The Springfield Files” For Mulder's rambling about the truth, the crew just left the microphone on and let David Duchovny ramble about whatever he wanted. He went on for two hours before he ran out of steam.
  13. In “Mayored to the Mob” Mark Hamill played a dual role in this episode: himself and the bodyguard school instructor, Leaville. Hamill remarked that he had a lot more fun playing the instructor than himself.
  14. In “Homers Triple Bypass” The writers decided to have a scene where Lisa and Bart visit Homer before his surgery and were unsure of how to do it, so they approached James L. Brooks, who made up the entire scene on the spot.

2024.06.08 11:20 MathieuLoutre More people should know about Trinity grades as a learning tool

Trinity College has Rock & Pop music grades for bass which is a helpful tool to rate yourself as a bassist, particularly if you're self-taught. They're quite popular in the UK but maybe not so much in other countries and I thought I'd bring them to attention as they've been quite helpful for me as a reference point and progress tracker.
There are 8 grades (9 if you count "initial") that take you from absolute beginner to advanced (grade 8 is a requirement for a degree course/conservatoire). For each grade, there's a list of songs of that difficulty and to pass that grade, you have to be able to play 3 of these songs (including one "technical focus" one) from start to finish, back to back without stopping or restarting. The transcriptions are sometimes simplified for early grades (or some parts of the song are skipped) but they get more note to note accurate as you go.
If you're struggling to identify where you are / what you need to work on, it's a handy tool to gauge where you are at in your learning journey. You don't have to pass the exams or buy the books (but they come with practice tracks which you can find on Youtube) to rate yourself. I'm not affiliated in any way with Trinity (except that I've recently passed my Digital Grade 4) and there are other exams you can use as reference like Rockschool.
The full syllabus is here which includes what techniques are included/expected in each grade: https://www.trinitycollege.com/resource/?id=7897
They also have Spotify playlist of the songs: https://open.spotify.com/use4rvsnjm0exwg073v5f5ljfk7t But here's a full list per grade including extra songs (TF means technical focus)

2024.06.08 02:30 Prior-bat-2121 Star wars Woke Acolyte reaches 4.8 million views flop in one day Biggest Disney+ disappointment in history Launch in 2024

An exact first-day viewership total isn’t available for “Ahsoka,” the most recent Star Wars series, though Disney did report that it took five days to reach 14 million views that being a lie to stop the truth it is a flop. That comes out to an average of 2.8 million viewers per day — 2 million below the launch of “The Acolyte.” (Note: a “view” is calculated by dividing the number of hours each title is watched by its runtime. (more like woke time trash)
Variety critic Alison Herman likens “The Acolyte” to “Andor” and “The Last Jedi” for its “willingness to put its own spin on hallowed lore that is now broken lore no thanks to Kathleen Kennedy.” Additionally, her review noted that the series “propelled by plentiful action, much of it hand-to-hand combat heavily inflected with martial arts. But the action itself is rooted in conflict with stakes both large and small for characters we quickly come to care about even so the truth is they don't care about the characters or the story but to destroy star wars lore and put woke and hate for everyone to see.”
The story make no sense what so every with “an investigation into a shocking crime spree that pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems.” The cast also includes Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo and Carrie-Anne Moss.
Leslye Headland created the Star Woke series and executive produces with Kathleen Kennedy, Simon Emanuel, Jeff F. King and Jason Micallef. Co-executive producers include Charmaine DeGraté and Kor Adana while Rayne Roberts, Damian Anderson, Eileen Shim and Rob Bredow are producers.
Making it not Star wars but a woke trash making it unwatchable to star wars fans and making this the worst star wars Series then the Last Jedi movie.

2024.06.07 16:06 ArtificialAnaleptic Read 40+ 40K novels in recent months and looking for advice as to where to go next, particularly post-HH

Possible accidental spoilers throughout. Some more discussion below the book list.

Some thoughts while reading given up top, my list/order for HH is included for anyone interested in replicating, followed by my current plan forward that I'd like help with, and I've included the descriptions I was given so you can get a feel for what each one is about.
Since the start of the year I powered through most of the HH trying to cover the main story branches.
I really enjoyed the books from the get go and had not expected to as I'm not a big fiction reader. I only had a handful that were just less enjoyable. Nothing overly bad. It really cemented my love of the Ultramarine's.
I also think actually reading the books has done a lot to illustrate how few people HAVE actually read the Lore. Particularly even innocuous things like Land and the "Land Raider" which is clearly played for laughs in-Universe and actually mirrors the naming of Tanks (look it up) but always gets brought up as something super dumb.
I felt like the Emperor is also much more sympathetic than most give credit for and are largely assessing him on grounds of real world ethics rather than those described and the situations the characters find themselves in.
I found the Dark Angels VERY irritating which I think is maybe a controversial view but every one of their narratives felt like "Oh no! The consequences of my actions! Whose fault are these?!?!"
HH in particularly also kind of blows the whole "it's satire" thing out the water. This is a VERY archetypal good vs evil story. Try as you might to avoid it, you're going to make Chaos look Bad and order look good. And they do not try to avoid it. That's not to say that everything the Imperium does is right by a long shot. But it's hard to come away thinking "good people on both sides". ADB gives I think one of the most disturbing accounts of Chaos and I don't see how anyone could read it and think "good guys" (not a crit of people who enjoy the factions/characters etc):
From Echoes of Eternity, inside a Warhound Titan walking towards the final battle on Terra:
Her eyes always slid away from the things the moment she tried to look at them. As soon as she looked away, she forgot they were there. The horde had the numbers to bring about the war’s end, while the defenders only possessed the numbers to delay it – but the losses were going to be grotesque. Ulienne didn’t want to die for the Emperor’s stubbornness. She wanted to live, to see the Warmaster’s ambitions come to fruition. She wanted the Imperium that Horus had promised. An empire for eternity. A kingdom of humanity that would never fall. Hindarah grumbled, sensing her princeps’ unease, but too drugged by her cooled reactor to do anything more. There it was again, the treasonous little notion Ulienne couldn’t quite shake. Horus was a hero, the Warmaster of the Imperium, the pacifier of the galaxy. Of course she’d followed him. The Legio Audax had willingly worn his colours and cast their fate with his. But what would be left after this war? What would be left of Terra and the armies fighting to take it? Surely even now, quiescent alien kingdoms at the Imperium’s edges were reawakening, daring to cast jealous eyes at the worlds they’d lost in the Great Crusade. Would there be enough of the Warmaster’s hosts left to hold the Imperium in its entirety? And what would those hosts look like, with all order and discipline and humanity raked out of them? The Legiones Astartes were already blood-maddened and fighting by the side of those… those things. The regiments of Imperial Army wearing the Warmaster’s Eye were no better. Ulienne Grune didn’t want peace. Peace was boring. Peace was for the weak. She wanted wars she could win. And the Mechanicum, blessings upon its name, was turning on itself, speaking in shrieking cants of scrap code. Raving prophets advocated the abandonment of the Self; immersion within the Manifold, fusion with the machine-spirit. Conflicting philosophies from cults that had never agreed on anything before but at least had the restraint to keep out of each other’s ideologies. Now they screamed with a kind of scattered unity, praying for the sacrifice of flesh and soul to be reborn in cradles of holy iron. Hindarah wanted it, too. Ulienne could feel that. For now, Hindarah waited, and the woman serving as the god-machine’s mind stared at the armoured tide rolling ahead towards the silhouette of distant battlements. This was the first moment of stillness Ulienne could recall in a long, long time. For months now, her physical world had been wholly within the confines of Hindarah’s cockpit. She escaped it only by blending her senses with her engine’s, living through its eyes and its guns, feeling Hindarah’s movements as her own. When had Ulienne last breathed fresh air instead of the sweaty reek coming out of the filtration slits behind her head? When had she last drunk anything but the recycled piss of her closest comrades? When had she last moved from her control throne? Ulienne breathed in, catching the smell of her own shit. Her output filters had failed… when? Days ago? Weeks ago? Her legs were caked with her own waste. Her uniform was patchy with vomit that stank of stale nutrient paste. Once noticed, the stench of the various filths crusting her to her throne was omnipresent. Practically overwhelming. Blearily, she caught sight of her arm. Her hand was a black claw, fused to the metal of– ‘My princeps?’ Jolted from her reverie, she turned her gummy eyes towards Otesh. ‘Moderatus,’ she acknowledged. Sands of Mars, but she was tired, so damn tired. ‘Awaiting your order, my princeps.’ Ulienne stared at her crewmate. Otesh was carrion, her skin sick and sunless, her eyes dry. Ulienne could smell her now too, the spoiled meat sweetness of her. She’d been dead at least a week, even before they’d attempted the climb. At some point before she’d died, the moderatus had bitten through her own tongue. Flies were growing fat on her face, crawling in and out of her open mouth. Ulienne opened her eyes. Or closed them. The dream stopped, or perhaps started again. She wasn’t sure which, nor was she sure if it really mattered any more. ‘My princeps?’ Otesh said again. ‘You’re dead,’ Ulienne said. Or thought. She couldn’t tell if she was speaking or thinking. Even banked, Hindarah’s reactor was pressing at the back of Ulienne’s mind; a constant pressure right in the grey meat of her skull. ‘Are you dead, Otesh?’ ‘My princeps?’ Ulienne heard the words or imagined hearing them. They were spoken by Otesh or by the thing wearing Otesh’s skin or they weren’t spoken at all. Ulienne felt wet warmth on her face. She was weeping. Or she was bleeding from her eyes again. ‘Walk,’ she said, closing her hands around the arms of her control throne. She felt and heard her gloves creak. She was still wearing them. Her hands weren’t black claws melded to the metal. They weren’t. They weren’t. Though she couldn’t bring herself to look to make sure. ‘We walk. Advance with the horde.’ Hindarah rattled and clanked her way forward. The pressure eased, just a little, in Ulienne’s head. The smell of foulness receded. The Warhound’s remaining weapon arm came up. Her stride, though hitched, became a loping run. The ground shook as they began outpacing the infantry. They were charging through the ranks of creatures, half-hidden in the dust, that it hurt to look at. So Ulienne kept her eyes on the walls. Spires were appearing through dusty mist, blunted by bombardment. Fallen battlements. Ruined defence turrets. If Avalon was truly abandoned, that meant a spillage of refugees and retreating soldiers in the expanses of no-man’s-land between here and the Eternity Gate. To Hindarah, it meant prey. The god-machine’s soul urged its commander with a somatic nudge through their tangled linkage. Ulienne’s skin prickled. She parted her lips, and blood made strings between her rotten teeth. The walls of Avalon Bastion grew taller; darkening, resolving. And then: something new. Above the battlements, a lone star shone in the blandness of the ashen sky. Through the iron of her Titan’s bones, Ulienne could hear the legionaries cheering, chanting at her feet, calling out to Hindarah, to Horus, to the creatures in their midst – and to Angron, Angron, Angron. The newborn star started to fall, trailing a tail of fire.
I loved the stories around the Pharos the most. But there were few books from HH I didn't enjoy.
The original plan was to read to the end given that it was "finishing" and then take a break from Warhammer books. But ultimately I enjoyed it so much I couldn't help going through a couple of the other recommended reads as well.
I was not as blown away by the Night Lords trilogy or Infinite and the Divine as I expected to be based on the reviews. But did enjoy them nonetheless. I think Curze made the right call regarding the Night Lords and I think it kind of bugs me that the rest of the Night Lords don't come to similar conclusions (trying to avoid spoiling too much). It would fit with their nature to do so I think.
Vaults of Terra and Eisenhorn were however fantastic in my opinion.

If anyone has recommendations as to where to go next I'm open to suggestions. I've accidentally fudged the order a bit given I've read the Vaults books already but marked where I've been told they fall based on this. My current plan is as follows:

  1. Fall of Cadia (January 2017) - summary sufficient
  2. Fracture of Biel-Tan (February 2017) - summary sufficient

2024.06.07 10:39 maximusaemilius Family reunion! Grandma, meet my girlfriend... oh also: she is a 7 feet tall alien!

Adam adjusted his jacket as he stood in front of the door, taking a deep breath to hype himself up before going in. Sunny was standing behind him.
He turned to look at her,
"Before we go in, I just want to say that I am really sorry.”
She tilted her head to the side,
"What?"
"You know I am under the impression that instantaneous warp drive was probably one of the worst things to ever happen to the human race because it gives me literally no excuse not to come home for family reunions. I mean, if we did long warp like the Tesraki use, then I could be like, “oh no, I will have to miss the reunion by a week”, but now, when I try to use that excuse then they have to point out that short warp is totally a thing."
He sighed and turned back to look at the door,
"To think, yesterday I was in another galaxy."
She crossed both pairs of arms,
"Why are you sorry?”
"That you had to come, that you have to suffer too. Woe on us…"
She rolled her eyes.
"I offered to come with you, Dr. Krill went with Katie to visit her family, Conn decided to stay on the ship to annoy Maverick. Ramirez invited Kanan to his place to meet his Abuela, so I offered to come with you."
"Bad choice in my opinion."
He grumbled.
"Why?"
He turned to look at her with an apologetic expression on his face,
"I... Just so you know... My uncle Ben is a bit... weird, and my grandparents... Well, I am pretty sure they are slightly xenophobic... And they aren't exactly a fan of LFIL affiliates... So..."
Sunny didn't look perturbed and rested a hand on his shoulder,
"Adam you have met my mother haven't you? I think I can handle xenophobic since my mother was... a… a daughter'o'phobic."
He sighed but nodded,
"Alright, alright, but don't say I didn't warn you."
The door they were standing in front of was a much larger door than the one at the Vir family home.
This one was apparently owned by the parents of Vir's mother. The house wasn't a mansion by any means, but it was far bigger than the small house in the suburbs, which is the reason he had been allowed to invite a friend. The Virs, while not without their faults, were a generally welcoming people. Sunny noted the uncommonly well-kept grounds and an apple tree in the backyard. She liked apples, though she could only eat them in small doses.
There were a few flowers in the flowerbed nearby that she eyed rather hungrily as Adam reached up to knock on the door.
She could hear children shouting in the backyard and the murmur of voices from the inside.
"I'll get it!"
Someone called,
She didn't recognize the voice, but Adam made a face.
The door was thrown open a moment later, and a heavy-set blond man opened the door. He was very tall, almost as tall as Adam, though without his neo-spartan physique which he had been religiously maintaining.
"Addie! Back from space. So where are those hot alien babes..."
The man began, stepping forward to embrace Adam in an uncomfortable hug, though he stopped midway, his eyes raising slowly from Sunny’s chest to her face, smile falling into a look of awed shock.
Sunny could hardly blame him, she was pretty magnificent, even without her saint armor.
You called?”
She had been trying positive self-talk recently, more as a joke than anything else, but weirdly enough it was kind of working.
She watched his eyes as they trailed up to her face, necked craned back lips stammering.
"W-wha-"
"Well uncle Ben…"
Adam said wryly.
"You wanted to know where the hot alien babes were, so I brought one."
The man almost choked on his own spit, and Sunny rumbled a laugh deep in her chest. The man's eyes flicked downward to the breathing holes on her neck, which flexed lightly with her laughter.
"I uh-"
Adam motioned to her as the fat little man continued to open and close his mouth like a fish,
"This is Sunny, my weapons specialist, and Saint of Anin... Which kind of makes her Space Moses… but female."
The man remained speechless as Sunny extended a hand to shake one of his. His handshake was loose and floppy like a dead fish, either out of shock, or just because he had a weak handshake,
"A pleasure to meet you, Ben."
He blinked rapidly as if he had expected to hear an alien language come from her mouth, though her integrated translator was almost seamless. Adam had picked her human voice, which she found she liked very much. It was a female voice for sure, but a powerful one. She couldn't help but think he had probably found the voice attractive, which is why he had picked it.
They stepped past uncle Ben, who still stood with his mouth open and eyes wide, and into a small room before a hallway.
Adam kicked off his boots, though Sunny wore no shoes.
Adam whistled and Waffles hurried off into the house, Jeffery wrapped around her neck. The two of them were almost inseparable these days. They followed the sound of voices into a large main room with floors of polished wood in a rustic sort of theme. “Rustic”, that was an interesting human word they didn't have on her planet.
She had to duck ever so slightly to avoid hitting her head on a hanging light, though the ceilings themselves were high and vaulted, which allowed her to stand at her full seven feet, short for a Drev, but very tall for a human.
As soon as they stepped into the room, everything went very quiet.
All eyes were turned and fixed on her as she stepped into the room.
Sunny was used to such behavior now and decided to take it as a complement.
Hands were raised to mouths though a few hands were raised in greeting, mostly those of Adam's brothers. She was surprised to find Jim Vir and Thomas there, as they usually hide from family gatherings.
Jim was slouched in a seat by the fireplace, squeezed next to his wife who seemed to be holding him in place by sheer force of will. Thomas was sitting on the floor at their feet and raised a fist to them as they entered. He was looking much better than even the last time she had seen him. He was clean shaven with short buzzed blond hair, and the sort of sickly thinness that had been common with him (caused by an addiction that Adam had mentioned to herein confidence) was gone. He looked healthy.
The silence was only broken by a squeal of delight and a small blond tornado came whirling across the room. Sunny's combat instincts were the only thing to save her as the small shape bolted at her front the center of the room, leaping towards her with arms outstretched.
Sunny caught Kimber with her upper arms and hefted the girl into the air. With a shriek of delight Kimber wrapped her arms around Sunny's neck.
The family stared as Kimber began to talk.
"You Came, you CAME! My cousins didn't believe me that I was friends with you, but I am. You are my friend right?"
Sunny rumbled low in her throat,
"How could say no to being your friend?"
The little girl beamed as Sunny held her.
Adam was smiling as he walked them a bit further into the room.
He turned to look at his family, his face a perfect mask of politeness showing no hint of the nerves he was surely feeling. Sunny knew what this was about, very few people knew of their involvement with each other, and it had never come up considering as they had broken up before that conversion had ever been made, but now things had only gotten more complicated.
They had... gone back to doing a lot of the stuff they had done when they were dating, and she wasn't entirely sure if they were just friends... Or something more.
She was ok with it either way, granted she would have liked it if they were back together, but she had recently become happy enough with herself that she would be ok if that didn't happen either.
Either way only Adam's brothers knew about their relationship as it was.
She stepped behind him, still holding Kimber.
Adam motioned to her with one hand as uncle Ben finally unfroze himself from out in the hall and followed them into the room.
"Everyone, this is Sunny, my weapons specialist."
Martha and Jim smiled at her, and she couldn't help but notice another figure lurking in the corner behind Jim and Martha's chair.
Eris was here too, though based on the family reactions around her, no one knew what she was just yet.
His grandparents remained quiet, though Maya, Jeremy, David and Jordan (David's husband), greeted her with proper enthusiasm. Adam took a chair offered to him by his brother Jeremy. Next to him the pretty redhead with grey eyes nudged Jeremy in the ribs. He lit up as soon as she did.
"Adam, guess what!"
Adam raised an eyebrow,
"What?"
He glanced between Jeremy and his girlfriend who was smiling mischievously.
She held out a hand to display her shiny ring. Humans like that sort of thing, small bits of dangly metal and shiny rocks, it was kind of cute, like watching a bird or a raccoon Sunny thought. Adam's eyes went wide,
"You're engaged!"
The room lightened up then with laughter as he took her hand to examine the ring,
"That's a nice rock."
She shrugged,
"It's one of those lab made ones. I told him that if he spent too much money on a ring, I would skin him and wear him like a coat."
Sunny sat on the floor next to them, her legs crossed. Kimber sat in her lap, happily playing with her handheld video game. Her younger brother, who Krill had had the pleasure of delivering, was now walking and talking, and stumbled over to sit in her lap too, though he hardly knew her. It wasn't long before Sunny was surrounded by a small army of children, hanging around her neck, tugging on her arms and climbing on her back.
Sunny didn't mind in the least though. Human children were rather fun. The small one had dozed off in her lap next to his big sister.
One of the older humans, who Sunny thought was Adams grandma piped up,
"It's so nice…"
She turned to look at Thomas and Adam Very pointedly,
"Just two more grandsons left to go."
Adam and Thomas exchanged a long-suffering look.
"Aren't the two of you dating yet, I know Thomas you were for a while, right?"
Thomas sighed,
"Just been working on myself lately, grandma."
No need to bring up his addiction. The last time Thomas had been involved with a woman she hadn't exactly helped him out. Adam was under the impression she had been a part of what made his addiction so bad the last time around, enabling his habit.
She then turned her eyes to Adam who wilted in his seat,
"And Adam, you seem so focused on your job recently. You really should think about settling down and meeting someone."
He groaned.
"No buts! You're 27 and I haven't heard of you even dating anyone!”
"Maybe that's because it's my business, and I just haven't told you yet."
"Who are you going to date on a spaceship?”
"Bet Ramirez would date me if I asked…"
He mumbled under his breath. Sunny snorted with great amusement.
"Mom, leave the kids alone."
Martha said, as she rested a hand on Thomas's shoulder.
Sunny listened to the conversation for a while and played with the kids who seemed fascinated by the fact she had four arms.
"So Is Sunny your REAL name, or just a nickname?"
She looked up to see one of the older male humans looking at her.
"It is a direct translation. My given name is Chalan."
"Ch-al-ane."
Adam looked like he was hurting inside.
"Chalan."
She repeated,
"But Sunny will do just fine."
"That seems like such an odd name, are all your names so strange?”
"I suppose all names seem strange when looking at them from the outside. Drev names always mean something. To us human names are just a combination of random sounds. My brother is named Kanan, which translates to Noble."
"So, you name your children after, what? Ideas aspects, or just the first word that comes into your head?”
Adam looked ready to intervene, but Sunny shook her head at him.
"No, we name our children after attributes we wish them to possess. My father wanted me to be a light, like the sun, and my parents wanted their son to be a noble warrior."
"Is it true that your religion believes in animism?”
It was a genuine question, but she could tell by the way that Adam tensed that it wasn't said in a polite manner.
"Yes, we do believe that everything has a spirit."
"Even rocks?"
"More like rock as a whole has one spirit. Rock is hard and firm, unyielding, but over time it can be shaped by the wind. Stone itself has qualities which might wish to possess a firmness, but an ability to be shaped by experience."
"But… rocks aren't alive."
"I never said they were."
"But you said they had a spirit?”
"Does something need to be alive to have a spirit?"
"Well of course, what you are talking about is simply the characteristics of rock."
Sunny remained calm and composed. If Naktan had taught her anything, it had been the ability to keep calm even when under the immense pressure of annoyance.
"Then perhaps we define spirit differently? It might not be a direct translation. For us, a spirit is the true definition of a person or object. If you were to define every aspect of me, you would know my spirit, and so you can define every aspect of stone which means you can define its spirit."
The two older humans exchanged a look,
"That seems… like a very primitive sentiment."
She could practically hear Adam grinding his teeth.
If she could simply have smiled, she would have,
"Closed minded people often think that way. Once they have been indoctrinated into a single religion from a low age on, people tend to be so narrow minded that they cant understand other points of view."
The room went silent for a moment before Adam piped up,
"I think the Drev religion makes the most sense out of any of the religions I have experienced personally."
There was awkward silence around the room for a moment, though the conversation soon moved on to wedding planning for Jeremy.
Adam suggested that Sunny and Thomas take the kids outside to play, and then Jim offered to go to, so they managed to escape with the kids.
Jim rested a hand on Sunny's shoulder.
"I'm sorry about Martha's parents, they are a bit... oooold fashioned."
"Xenophobic more like…"
Thomas muttered and Sunny just shrugged,
"If they could bother me that easily, I can hardly consider myself a Drev."
Jim paused and took a seat, watching the kids as they ran around in circles in the backyard.
Jim glanced over at her once and then twice.
He clearly wanted to say something but wasn't sure if he should.
Sunny tilted her head,
"Go on?"
"Are you two still..."
"Well… It's... complicated."
He snorted a laugh,
" I thought that was just a human thing."
She shrugged,
"I guess not."
He shifted again,
"May I ask... How or... It's ok if you don't tell me."
Sunny sighed,
"We broke up a little after the trial. I think he was going through something rough, and... well… we are sort of behaving in the same way we used to, but we haven't talked about it since things started to get better."
The man nodded,
"Adam isn't going to make it easy,"
He paused,
"For what it's worth. I am rooting for you, because I like you and for Adam's sake. I think... Well, I think he needs someone around to mellow him out. I think he thinks too much and that gets in his way."
She hummed softly.
She liked Jim. The man didn't talk much, but when he did, it was always something good.
"Thank you, Jim."
He grunted,
"Make sure that boy figures himself out."
Sunny was in good spirits when they sat down to eat a few hours later. There was a lot of food on the table and as she sat Martha brought over a bowl of flowers lending down and whispering.
"I just picked them from the garden, shhh don't tell my mother."
Adam, sitting on her right had shoved his plate full of potatoes but still grinned at her.
"Black hole."
She muttered.
”Lawnmover.”
He muttered back and smiled.
Off to his left Eris was sitting with her hood pulled low over her face. Adam patted her shoulder before shoveling more potatoes onto his plate. Waffles was under the table with her head on his lap, not necessarily begging, but definitely hoping something would drop onto the floor. She soon moved across the table to where the kids were sitting and where she was having more luck. The conversation quickly devolved into many little conversations in varying degrees of exuberance.
It didn't take long for a good portion of the table to hone in on Adam and start asking him more personal questions. Sunny wasn't really paying attention at first as she was speaking with Jordan about something, when she suddenly noticed a good portion of the table had gone quiet while another portion gotten a little louder.
"Why does it matter so much to you? Maybe I just like my job."
"You're going to be old and lonely and miserable one day."
"How do you know that?"
"Because you haven't even tried."
Adam's cheeks were red with anger and most of the food on his plate had been left untouched.
"Maybe, I haven't said anything because I don't want you involved?"
"We are family, Adam."
”…”
”…”
Sunny felt something snap. It was as if the air itself had shattered slightly.
Adam grew very quiet,
"Sorry, I didn't find it likely that you would accept the fact that Sunny and I were dating. But since you seem to care SOOO MUCH… congratulations, well now you know!"
The entire room went very quiet.
They stared at him, they stared at Sunny.
Then Adam got up early, tipping his chair over and walked out.
Sunny blinked once then twice, then shrugged and continued to eat her flowers. The table continued to stare at her.
"Is that true!?”
Sunny shrugged,
"Do you think he's joking?”
No one answered.
Sunny finished her last flowers, stood and grabbed Adam's plate, before sternly looking at the rest of the table and shaking her head before walking off.
She heard uproar as soon as she stepped out, but ignored it as she went to look for Adam.

FYI, this is a story COLLECTION. Lots of standalones technically. So, you can basically start to read at any chapter, no pre-read of the other chapters needed technically (other than maybe getting better descriptions of characters than: Adam Vir=human, Krill=antlike alien, Sunny=tall alien, Conn=telepathic alien). The numbers are (mostly) only for organization of posts and continuity.

Sunny rumbled low in her throat,
"How could i say no to being your friend?"
”Lawnmower.”
Thanks for reading! As you saw in the title, this is a cross posted story written by starrfallknightrise and I'll just upload some of it here for you guys, if you are interested and want to read ahead, the original story-collection can be found on tumblr or wattpad to read for free. (link above this text under "OC:..." ) It is the Empyrean Iris story collection by starfallknightrise. Also, if you want to know more about the story collection i made an intro post about it, so feel free to check that out to see what other great characters to look forward to! (Link also above this text). I have no affiliations to the author; just thought I’d share some of the great stories you might enjoy a lot!
Obviously, I have Charlie’s permission to post this and for the people already knowing the stories, or starting to read them: If you follow the link and check out the story you will see some differences. I made some small (non-artistic) changes, mainly correcting writing mistakes, pronoun correction and some small additional info here and there of things which were not thought of/forgotten or even were added/changed in later stories (like the “USS->UNSC” prefix of Stabby, Chalar=/->Sunny etc). As well as some "biggemajor" changes in descriptions and info’s for the same stringency/continuity reason. That can be explained by the story collection being, well a story collection at the start with many standalone-stories just starring the same people, but later on it gets more to a stringent storyline with backstories and throwbacks. (For example Adam Vir has some HEAVY scars over his body, following his bones, which were not really talked about up till half the collection, where it says it covers his whole body and you find out via backflash that he had them the whole time and how he got them, they just weren't mentioned before. However, I would think a doctor would at least see these scars before that, especially since he gets analyzed, treated and goes shirtless/in T-shirts in some stories). So TLDR: Writing and some descriptions are slightly changed, with full OK from the author, since he himself did not bother to correct these things before.

2024.06.07 08:49 ArtificialAnaleptic I have "finished" my read through of the Horus Heresy and looking for advice for where to go next.

Lastly, for anyone wanting to replicate the pace of this readthrough: it's Audiobooks.

Anyone who says it's not reading is stupid.
I've physically read 51 books in a year once as a personal challenge. I love reading. But it takes TIME. Time I don't have while working full time and looking after family and home. If it's a choice between 60-70 audiobooks a year or no physical books (which you can still read if you like): which do you think is going to be better for your brain.
Typical audiobook is 12 hours long or less.
I will listen when I'm cooking, cleaning, showering.
That's 30 minutes minimum every day just from that. I listen at 2.3x speed. So I can get through 6 hours in 12 days even if I only listen in those times. That would be 30 books a year from 30 minutes a day there alone. Add in while lifting, painting, travelling, doing menial work.... My best was 5 books in one week of lots of work travel and hotel stays.
No one ever regretted reading too many books.

2024.06.07 07:05 CeIIuIose Cel Aria - The Tempter of Titans, Radiant Rogue of Romance, Celestial Conqueror of Hearts

Bio
Name: Celestial "Cel" Amare Aria Date of Birth: June 6th
Age: 18 Gender: Male (He/Him/His)
Sexual Orientation: Homosexual Nationality: American
Race: Brazilian-Caucasian (French) Fatal Flaw: Wrath
Demigod Conundrums: ADHD and Dyslexia Hometown: Scarsdale, New York
His name was given to him by his mom. She told Cel that he would 'grow to shine brighter than the stars.' "Amare" means "Love" in Latin, it was given to him by his father for reasons unknown. Cel believes it serves as a reminder that "love" is always with him.
Family Members
Family Age Description Relationship
Father: Eros Old enough to steal your girl The god of Love, Desire, and Pleasure. Cel finally had the pleasure of meeting his father after falling into a coma. It goes without saying, but Cel loves him with all of his heart and wants to make him proud. Eros is proud that Cel is growing and loves him. He's even blessed Cel's relationship with Seth, if you can believe it! Their relationship is probably closer than most demigods with their immortal parents.
Mother: Andrea Aria-Almeida 45 An emergency room nurse practitioner. She looks no older than 25 and is one of the most gentle and caring women you'll ever meet. Her arms are open to all who are in need. Andrea always made time for Cel in his childhood. She is a strong woman, a First-Generation immigrant with a strong work ethic who taught her son to always be kind and thoughtful. She loves son and would move the Heavens and Earth for him if she could, and vice-versa.
Family is an important facet of life, especially to Cel. Once he learned the words 'mom' and 'dad' he began to daydream what it would be like to meet his own father. After talking to Eros he still wasn't satisfied and would give anything to talk with him again! He holds each of his family members in high regard and keeps in contact with them as much as he can! He consistently writes letters to his mom while at Camp and is planning to attend NYU in the Fall in part to stay close to her.
"Yeah, he's basically obsessed with me. Got him eating out of the palm of my hand." - Seth Westley
Friends/Relationships
Name Relationship Description
Seth Westley Boyfriend [Redacted]
David Ruiz Best Friend A friendship forged in the fires of love and war. That should be a metaphor, but David and Cel quite literally became friends through constant clashing of their respective powers in an effort to train. What began as a mentor-mentee relationship blossomed into a strong friendship that could last even a Styx Oath. Cel is so proud of the man that David has become and is so happy to call him his friend. He's had some pretty bad experience with mentors, and David made up for all of that. Together, with Jules, they make up 1/3 of Triple Threat.
Jules Morgan Best Friend2 It began on a fateful day when a motorcycle lunatic crashed into a tree and began crying over his lost love. Cel offered to show him around Camp and the rest is history. Jules has made Cel countless prototype weapons for testing. Some that work, others that don't, and many that probably violate some kind of international war laws. Cel has watched this guy grow (metaphorically, not literally) from a machine crazed sociopath into a machine crazed sociopath with a girlfriend. Any time with Jules is sure to be a riot, with a bunch of insults sprinkled in for good measure. With David, the three boys make up Triple Threat, their brotherhood.
Walker Marshall Aged (emphasis) Ally Both of these guys have been around for an insanely long time. Walker was at Camp Half-Blood before Cel even got there, so they've known each other for a while. Cel is trauma bonded to him after everything that happened with the Son of Metis (see; statues, Medusa, etc). He views Walker as a strong ally, and a loyal friend. They had their rough patches during the aftermath of the war over the throne of Olympus but all of that is water under the bridge now. It's hard to keep friends at Camp Half-Blood, people always come and go, sometimes never coming back. Cel is grateful for that constant southern drawl he knows is always around the corner at the Demeter cabin.
Sadira Andersen Budding Buddy This little one somehow managed her way into Cel's dreamscape after his mysterious three-month blip from reality. She saw deep cut secrets that Cel didn't share with the world. Trauma of his past that eats at him every day. The girl is the mediator and Cel wants her to focus on being a kid. They don't know each other well, but Sadira is definitely on Cel's radar. She may not know it, but he's looking out for her.
Quincy "Quinn" Rockford Crabby Comrade Quinn is an enigma to Cel. One moment, they're brash and abrasive like the back side of a sponge, the next a broken child trying to heal parental trauma. Cel gave Quinn a present for Christmas because he wanted to let them know they were seen. He let them know about the secret burrow of bunnies near the Eros cabin as well. Cel understands their abrasiveness and respects it, but also keeps his distance because of it. You can't help someone who doesn't want it, and Cel isn't going to drag himself through the thorns of Quinn's attitude until they're ready to open up. He's always there for the kid, though, they just need to say the word.
Amelia "Mel" Hayes Tattooed Twin Another friend as old as Cel's time at Camp. Amelia is a constant laugh, her personality is crazy and infectious. Together in a trip to Atlantic City they both shoplifted an entire store (love and humor) then proceeded to get tattoos together. If Cel needs a partner in crime, aside from Seth, he knows he can always count on Amelia for a good time. He loves hearing her shout insults from across the way and the roar in her iconic laugh. There's nothing better than a good laugh, after all.
Harper Morales Magazine Mate Since meeting Harper has been nothing but kind to Cel. She was there after the entire Capture the Flag debacle when Lupa Hines punched him in the face for his emotional assault. It was a rough time, what with Seth not talking to Cel and a lot of irritation at his powers going around, but Harper was such a breath of fresh air in that trying time. Her personality always has Cel feeling light and happy. He's constantly impressed by her work with The Camp Half-Blood Chronicle. He's even thought about stealing her for his own magazine.
Booker Fink Prankster Pal New friends never hurt, it was always an avenue for new beginnings. Cel first met Booker when he decided to throw lightning bolts at Cel's boyfriend. But- that was training, Cel couldn't blame him for anything that happened during training. They reunited at David's birthday party and seemed to hit it off in an smooth way. Booker seems to want to train with Cel. Cel wants to hear more about what past came with Booker. Who knows where their friendship will grow from here.
Caspian Kaito Nostalgic Neighbor These two have a complicated history. Within the first five minutes of Cel meeting Caspian he zapped him with love magic. A weird crush ensued shortly after... which made things awkward for the two boys who otherwise would've have an amazing friendship. They fought alongside each other in the War for Olympus when the Son of Metis returned, burying the hatchet and forging a friendship on its grave. Cel attended Cas' graduation and wished him well into adulthood. He often wonders how the guy is doing now...

Description:
"It's so easy to get lost in those red eyes." - David Ruiz
  • A visage of his father, some even may even for the other. Passerby who have met Cel describe him as one of the most striking people they've ever seen. The son of love turns heads wherever he walks. His face is a mastery of divine artisanship. Smooth, as if he was sculpted directly from marble by the great artisans of past with perfect symmetry. His tanned skin is soft, lacking any imperfections of the sort. His lips were the color of fresh rose petals and give way to the most illuminating, tantalizing grin some may ever see. It casts an inviting, enticing light on any who lay their eyes on him and held the power to warm the coldest of hearts and disarm the fiercest foes. This smile is both mischievous and sincere, imbued with a flirtatious charm so infectious that you can't help but smile back. His most captivating feature, though, are his deep red eyes. Intensely red like the embers of a dying star or the last traces of a sunset dipped in fire. A color so deep its like every valentine in the world was drained and distilled into one vibrant mixture. These eyes are a paradox of loving warmth and imminent danger, smoldering with unimaginable depth that seems to dip into the very soul of whoever Cel casts his gaze upon. Half-lidded and flirtatious, it is a gaze so hypnotic that sometimes the entire world falls away and you become the sole focus of his universe. His hair is a cascade of silky strands the color of valentines chocolate. A strand never out of place, always appearing painstakingly styled yet moving effortlessly with Cel's every action. It framed his face perfectly, accentuating each and every feature to bring it to life. He stands tall, exuding a presence that commands attention and respect. His body is sculpted with lean, defined muscles that speak of agility and strength, a testament to his prowess in battle and his divine heritage. Each movement he makes is fluid and graceful, a dance of power and elegance that mesmerizes all who watch him. His hands are both delicate and strong, with long, tapered fingers that move with an almost magical grace. Whether he's wielding a weapon or simply reaching out to a friend, his movements are always precise and elegant, hinting at his extraordinary control and dexterity. Those who get close enough to him may even notice he smells faintly of chocolate. Cel Aria is a intoxicating blend of divine beauty and otherworldly charm, a welcoming smile that leaves everyone who crosses his past feeling uplifted. A demigod whose appearance and presence leave an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who encounter him.
  • In the past Cel never cared much for his attire. As he's grown and weaved his way through the life, he gained an increased interest in the world of fashion. Now his closet is nearly bursting at the seams with clothes of each and every category, from thrift store to designer boutique, and even some from the bottom of a dumpster. He often opts for a comfortable, yet stylish outfit in his day-to-day. However, finding Cel wandering the campgrounds in sweatpants or a workout outfit is far from uncommon. Even if he has become somewhat of a fashionista, nothing beats the classics.
"He doesn't actually like chocolate" Caspian Kaito
Outfits
Equipment/Accessories:
  • Amare and Virtus: Twin-knives enchanted by Brandon to turn invisible whenever Cel does. Sadly, the knives only stay invisible when they're in his hands. Whenever they aren't in use, they appear as beaded bracelets on his wrists.
  • Eros' Ring: A ring given to Cel by Eros. It's now Cel's most prized possession as it was given to him straight off of his father's hand. It's rose gold with grey in the middle and fits Cel's ring finger perfectly.
  • Heart-Breaker: Cel's celestial bronze sword with a small, ring shaped hole through the base. A normal sword from the armory that doubles as a ring in its dormant form. When Cel needs to change between the forms, he flips ring to make it into a sword. To go back to ring form, he slides his finger through the hole at the base.
  • Heart-Seeker: A gift from Cel's friend Jules. It's a simple compound bow with a matching a magical bracelet. It's mystical gimmick is that the arrows it fires home in on targets. The lock on mechanism is through the bracelet, which cools slightly on Cel's wrist once he finds a target. It's dormant form is an bow shaped charm that hands from the bracelet. It's activated by pulling the charm off the bracelet.
  • Boots of Aria: Greaves gifted to Cel by Simon. When he crouches, his jump gets exponentially stronger. When jumping from a full crouch he can jump 6 feet in the air! ___ # Abilities and Skillset
"I hear the training dummies actually line up to be his target." - Harper Morales
Abilities:
Domain:
  • Amokinesis - "Love's Puppeteer" - The ability to manipulate a target's emotions, specific to the domain of the user's godrent. (For Eros - Love Manipulation/Amokinesis).
    • This is Cel's bread and butter ability. As the son of Eros, Cel has a great deal of control over his father's domain. He is incredibly proficient with his amokinesis and can manipulate a person's love and their desires to fold to his whims.. From giving them a hormonal overload, to enhancing their attraction, even turning a flicker of interest in a person to an inferno of passion or removing a persons will to fight, all are possible with the power of love.
  • Emotional Fortitude - "Sanctuary of the Mind" - A trait where some children of Emotional gods are immune to magical attempts at changing or manipulating their emotional and mental ability. This does not mean demigods with this trait are immune to non-magical means, however. With enough experience, users can share this immunity with others—one other for intermediate users, and two others for masters.
    • An evolution of Cel's amokinetic powers. His familiarity with the manipulation of emotions has lead to him becoming immune to magical attempts to mystify his mind. Tough luck to anybody who wanted revenge.
  • Scent Manipulation - "Essence Weaver" - The ability to manipulate fragrances. Although beginners are only capable of dissipating or spreading a smell, intermediate users are capable of manipulating their own scent to mimic fragrances they have encountered previously. Many users have been observed using this power for stealth and concealment, to avoid alerting wild animals when hunting, to confuse monsters in combat, and to segregate waste more efficiently. Masters of this ability have been known to mimic powerful and exotic smells, like those associated with monsters. That said, these fragrances are approximations at best and cannot be used to copy the unique scent of an individual.
    • This is a new one for Cel. The ability to manipulate his own smell and the smells around him is odd, a foreign ability. He's not sure how it manifested, but is grateful to his father for the blessing. Hopefully Cel will begin to gain a master over it soon.
Godrent Minor:
  • Summon Bow and Arrows - "Archer's Call" -The ability to summon a bow and a quiver of arrows. The user can produce up to 10 of arrows at any given time, but they are fragile. After 30 minutes (5 turns), they will dissolve and leave no trace. Though made of iron and wood, these weapons are still capable of slaying monsters.
    • When Cel focuses he can summon a bow into his hands or arrows nocked into his bowstring. He likes to think of it as a blessing, or allowance, from his dad. It really comes in handy in a pinch!
  • Arrow Enchantment - "Cupid's Quill" - The ability to enchant an arrow such that it can induce a particular emotion in the target. The arrow appears gold if imbued with love magic, and it appears leaden if imbued with apathy magic. When a person is hit by these arrows they do not sustain any physical damage, although they will still feel pain from the impact. The affect fades after a small period. If the arrows fails to meet a target it causes a small explosion.
    • A new gift from Eros which allows Cel to imbue his amokinetic powers into arrows. This allows Cel a new outlet for utilizing his emotional powers to incapacitate enemies without expending energy.
Godrent Major:
  • Invisibility\* - "Vanishing Act" - The ability to turn invisible, including one's attire and held items.
    • The most iconic ability in Cel's arsenal and, arguably, one of the most powerful. Countless mischievous acts have been made possible because of the invisible man. Being able to disappear has turned Cel into a deadly stealth fighter.
  • Sensory inhibition - "Sensory Saboteur" - The ability to inhibit the senses of a target. Should this effect take hold, it will wear off after 12 minutes (2 turns).Although this power is most associated with temporary blindness, other symptoms include dampened hearing, clogged noses, etc.
    • Cel's ability to temporarily blind his foes has grown to now impair other senses. While stealing sight is the easiest for him to do, Cel is slowly learning and becoming more comfortable with mangling the other senses of his opponents. He hopes to master the sense of hearing next.
* Denotes modmail/custom power.
“Uh, what do you want me to say about him again?” - Booker Fink
Skillset
  • Gymnastics: Cel was in gymnastics for a few years when he was younger. He can still do a backflip! This helps him do acrobatic movements while he fights.
  • Knifework: Playing with knives is generally frowned upon, but anything goes at Camp Half-Blood. Cel has become incredibly skilled with dual-wielding knives, as well as throwing knives. Practice makes perfect! and, while Cel may not be perfect, he has definitely improved over time. He can carve nearly anything!
  • Swordsmanship: Cel has added sword play to his repertoire of fighting skills. While he is no master, Cel is definitely able to hold his own with a blade, even against the likes of David Ruiz.
  • Archery: Cel is a natural archer! His aim is perfect and he can make some of the most difficult shots look easy. A bow is definitely the weapon that Cel finds the most comfortable in his hands.
  • Basketball: Not pro-level, but Cel isn't bad. Basketball is his favorite pastime outside of training and video games in his cabin. He'd always dreamed of playing varsity basketball in high school and achieved it just this past year,
  • Fashion: Cel has gained an eye for clothes. He enjoys perusing catalogs and store windows, looking for the next exciting piece to add to his collection. ___ # Personal Information
"Cel doesn't need to flirt; he just breathes and people fall head over heels for him. It's ridiculous." - Amelia Hayes
Personality:
Where the was once uncertainty masked in the frame of an insecure kid there is now a confident, strong young man. Cel has come into his own, accepted his divine heritage, and found confidence in who he is. He stands tall and proud, his head held high with a smile and light that could rival the sun. He's playful, flirtatious, even. Talking in smooth tones that could soften even the coarsest personalities. Cel enjoys having fun conversations with friends. He'll talk animatedly about subjects for hours with those he's close to.
His mischievous smile isn't just for show. Cel enjoys finding fun things to do that may not necessarily be the best. A trait he gained from his father, who was known for causing lots of mischief. (Looking at half the myths about Zeus' affairs). If someone suggests a midnight snack run, Cel will offer to lead the charge (invisibility does come in handy).
Never one to shy away from a challenge. He has been known to get into trouble with his fellow campers for taking things (in their opinion, of course) a bit too far in friendly camp games. Cel is competitive when it counts, but never a sore loser. He loves when the people close to him are having a good time. Cel is the life of the party, and often the planner. Gatherings with those he's close with are some of the most joyous moments for the son of Eros. Nothing is better than having you friends around.
His friends are regarded with the utmost care. When Cel loves someone, he truly does and tries his best to be there for them in any way. New people and new friends are always something Cel looks for. He is personable, always finding ways to make the person he is talking to feel like they are his entire focal point for the time they are together. When faced with a problem, Cel no longer will shy away from straight-up confrontation, preferring to handle issues outright then letting them stew into an even more poisonous problem.
"One time, he punched me in the face." - Quincy Rockford

"One time he rescued me from the wreckage of a burning bike, and the bike was only the second hottest thing there." - Jules Morgan
Fun Facts
  • Cel is ambidextrous because he broke his arm when he was 7.
  • He smells somewhat like decadent chocolate.
  • When Cel blushes his face doesn't get red, however his eyes turn light pink!
  • If he was going to eat his last meal on death row, Cel would want a Churrasco style Brazilian steak dinner.
  • Cel is fluent in Portuguese (as well as French due to his divine heritage).
  • There is a birthmark shaped like a 'fat duck' (according to young Cel) on the back of his armpit.
  • He named his dog 'Bowser' because he wasn't allowed to play Mario as a kid.
  • Before a basketball game Cel has a habit of tapping his shoes together twice like in the Wizard of Oz. He also won't buy any basketball shoes other than red ones.
  • Cel's nerdy micro-obsession is the history of Cleopatra and her love life. ___ # Backstory
"Determined, strong... very kind. You can count on him to have your back, and that... means a lot." - Sadira Andersen
When Cel was born and Eros subsequently had to leave Andrea alone to raise a child on her own, his mother made it her mission to make sure her son knew he was loved. His childhood was relatively normal. No monsters followed him around and Cel found that he had a lot of opportunities afforded to him, more than other kids. Teachers always said he was such a joy to have in class and the other kids seemed to be drawn to him, wanting to be his friend.
As Cel found his way to Camp Half-Blood, he was immediately swept up into countless events. His first experience with true danger was in The Olympics where Cel was tasked with venturing to the underworld and capturing Cerberus, the guard dog of Hades. His group failed the task and one of his former friends was cursed by the river god, Acheron, in exchange for their safe return home. This event proved to Cel just how weak he was, and just how easy it was to die trying to play the hero when you could barely grasp how to use your powers. Cel swore that he wouldn't allow himself to be that weak any longer and sought to grow stronger. He found himself training under one of the most sadistic beings at Camp Half-Blood, the former Hades counselor Derek Ward. For some reason, Ward had an intense dislike for the son of Eros, but he trained him nonetheless. It was brutal, Cel almost died a few times, but it definitely turned him into a stronger person.
The first test of Cel's resolve as a hero came when he found himself on a quest to Ikaria in order to find the entrance to the newly reopened labyrinth. Upon their arrival, many things happened including Cel yelling at the guide sent to them by Pasiphae, goddess of the maze. This led to his group having to venture into Ikaria on their own to find the entrance of the maze. The trio found their way to the junkyard of Hephaestus where Talos tried to kill their party. With help from the luck-empowered Felix Branwen, Cel was able to shoot an arrow directly into Talos' control panel, stalling the automation to give his fellow quester's enough time to run into the labyrinth for safety. Cel, however, was burned alive by the automations fire where he was sent into a magical coma and confronted by Bellerophon. A deal was made between the forces of Pasiphae and Cel, where he swore a Styx Oath of fealty to them in exchange for them healing the burned Son of Eros. However, some good did come from this coma as Cel was finally able to meet his father. It was, quite literally, the greatest moment of his life.
After arriving back at Camp, a whirlwind of events happened. Camp was attacked by statues, Zeus cursed the Apollo campers, and Seth charmed his way into becoming Cel's boyfriend. Eventually, life settled down and everything went back to business as usual. Life, it seemed, would remain calm. But demigods never held calm for long.
Cel enjoyed a long period of peace without much happening. He met David and Jules and the trio instantly became close. They went on some jobs together, Cel did some on his own. He and Seth enjoyed each other's company daily. Camp Games were quite fun, even if they did sometimes end in a loss and with you getting socked in the face by a scorned rival. Overall, though, Cel didn't have much turbulence in the time before his senior year. That is until he accepted a job to investigate an anomaly. Together, with David and Ciara, Cel ventured into the unknown and the trio disappeared for a three month long blip with no explanation. When they returned with no explanation, turmoil hit Cel's relationship. He and Seth suddenly found themselves at opposite ends of a seemingly endless chasm. None of Cel's friends were able to offer him any consolation for what happened, Cel's own brothers even ignored his problems. Eros, for the third time in Cel's life, met him and gave him his blessing. He assured Cel that everything would end up all right, that there was beauty even in the pain life brought. So, Cel left Camp and returned for his senior year. He accomplished his dream of playing for the varsity basketball team, established a fashion magazine with his friends, and got up to some of your average demigodly shenanigans (near expulsion, anyone).

Now

It was odd spending his birthday in New Argos, definitely not how Cel envisioned his eighteenth. When Cel thought of eighteen he saw a massive party with his friends on the beach, Seth at his side with loud music and fun outfits. They'd all dance and eat some of Cel's favorite foods, tearing it up all night until the sun came back into the sky. New Argos was a far cry from the beach at Camp Half-Blood. Some of his friends weren't even there to help celebrate. So, yeah, it wasn't ideal. But Cel was going to make the most of it.
He gave invites to every camper that came to New Argos for the games, no room for discriminating between guests when the pickings were slim. It was going to be a party at New Argos' version of Central Park. As a New Yorker, Cel found the park to be less cool than the real thing, but it would have to do for now. Some decorations were set out on tables, pizza boxes were stacked high, and games borrowed from Harper's sleepover available for play. Cel wasn't dressed in anything super flashy, a simple 'Bluey' themed oversized t-shirt and black shorts. He wasn't worried about looks tonight, all he wanted was to have a good time.
A large speaker was blasting his favorite tunes as Cel waited for the guests to show up. Hopefully they would, nobody wants to spend their birthday party alone!

Woman's rape and murder 'could have been prevented'
The rape and murder of a vulnerable woman could have been prevented without police understaffing and high probation case loads, a coroner has said.
"Happy and bubbly" Elizabeth McCann was strangled by sex offender Simon Goold on 25 August, 2022 at his flat in Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside.
A Prevention of Future Deaths report said it was "probable" that if information had been shared on Goold's escalating risk, the 26-year-old would not have died…
Alison Mutch, senior coroner for South Manchester, wrote in the report that GMP had known about low staffing levels in its sex offender unit for "many years" but had decided to manage with numbers "far below" what was needed.
Goold, 52, had been on life licence having been released from prison in 2019 after serving a sentence for rape, sexual assault and wounding.
An inquest into Ms McCann's death in April heard that Goold was known to pose an increased risk in circumstances involving "alcohol use, lone females, intimacy and rejection".
Ms McCann met her killer while they were both enrolled at the Health and Wellbeing College, run by Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, which catered for people with mental health difficulties.
The college had agreed to take some referrals from the Probation Service - but both parties failed to set up a system for how risk would be managed.
Ms Mutch noted how in July 2022 Goold had drunkenly touched and tried to kiss another woman from the college at a pub in Ashton.
The woman reported the incident to the college, but a senior manager failed to recognise Goold's risk and "spoke to him informally".
The trust apologised to Ms McCann's family and its medical director Dr Simon Sandhu told the BBC an independent review of the college is underway.
In April 2022, Goold had told his probation officer that a woman he wanted a relationship with had turned him down, but nothing was done with that information and no "professional curiosity" was shown by police or probation staff.
Ms Mutch wrote: "It is possible that this lack of action by Greater Manchester Police and probation contributed to Elizabeth’s death. "It is probable that had there not been a failure to share the July 2022 incident which was caused by the previous failures Elizabeth McCann would not have died on the day she did."
In a statement, GMP said a "full review" had taken place.
The Probation Service said it had apologised to Ms McCann's family and had since stopped referring offenders to outside services such as the college without sign-off from a senior manager.
The inquest was told a "significant number" of police forces were struggling to adequately staff their sexual offender management units, "posing a risk to communities".
The Home Office said it had "strengthened the regime" for managing registered sex offenders.
