Battle beyond Saturn

They came out of deep space, always preying on weaker opponents. With their gigantic ships, they smashed through any system defenses they encountered before looting and pillaging valuable resources and food. No one knew where their home world was located to go after them.
They had a Behemoth Class Ship which had been up-gunned to have no equal in a 1:1 battle. Having laid waste to a system, they would disappear once again into the vastness of space. They were gone before anyone could assemble a fleet large enough to engage them in battle.

Pluto Station - Sol System

Alarms started ringing all over the station. Sensor satellites in the Kuiper belt had detected a large fleet emerging from jump, inbound to Sol system. Since no known convoy was scheduled, this was most likely the hostile raiders.
Captain Karlson - Commander Pluto Station: “Hail on all frequencies. ‘Unknown ships. Please identify yourselves. You are entering Sol System Space’. ”
“No response. I think we have our answer. All hands, General Quarters”
“Sensors - what do we have?”
“Eleven ships in total. One ship over 2 million tonnes. Nine large vessels from 600 kilo-tonnes to one mega-tonnes. And one smaller vessel approximately 150 kilo-tonnes accelerating and heading above the orbital plane”.
“Comms - open FTL channel to Fleet HQ at Ganymede Station. Leave it open and send continuous telemetry.”
“Aye-aye, Captain.”

Behemoth Class - Havoc

For Admiral Goranth of the H’runik, this was the 14th system raid and frankly, things were routine and boring. His Captains knew what to do and were getting into battle formation. The Scout Ship “Seeker” was already accelerating above the planetary orbital plane in its capacity of Spaceborne Early Warning. All engines and sensors, it was the one ship in the raiding fleet to have defensive armament only.
The only surprise was how quickly the natives had detected his fleet and sent out a challenge. No matter - their puny fleet was no match for his ships.
“Comms - tell the Captain of Smasher to take care of that station. I don’t want any surprises from behind once we are in-system”. Within a few minutes, the Admiral watched the ship fall out of formation and head towards the source of annoyance.
Jump drives could take ships between the stars rapidly. The bigger the drives, the further the jumps and consequently fewer jumps needed. However, once inside the gravity well of a star system, normal physics took over and ships were limited to sub-light speeds. Due to the mass and inertia of Havoc, Admiral Goranth was expecting to take about 10 standard days to get to the populated third and fourth planets. He wasn’t expecting the defending fleet to slow him down at all.

Sol Fleet HQ - Ganymede Station

Admiral Vir Singh (CinCSDF), thanks to the FTL data feed, watched the events unfold on the edge of the Solar System. He and his team analyzed the movements of the approaching enemy fleet.
Analyst 1: Marking them as “Bandits” starting with “1” from the biggest to smallest. On screen now. Those ten ships in the main body are huge. Even the smallest out-masses our largest carriers.
Analyst 2: If intel is right from previous raids, they’ve added bigger and many more weapons to the original designs.
Analyst 3: Bandit-11 ascending above the orbital plane is obviously their eyes. They will be able to watch and report our movement.
Commodore Perera: Hello? What’s Bandit-9 doing? He’s going after Pluto Station!
Admiral Singh: Ganymede Actual to Pluto Actual. There’s big trouble headed your way. Get ready to evacuate to the Charon bunker.

“Admiral Singh to all ships. Recall all personnel and get ready to deploy within 12 hours. Replenish stores, especially ammunition. I’ll be calling a meeting with all Captains and XOs at 14:00 today.”

Admiral Goranth: Seeker - report on enemy strength.
Seeker: This system only has three Dreadnought class ships. These have the biggest weapons. Then there are six heavy Cruisers. Their biggest ships are of an unknown configuration. These don’t seem to have any major armament. There are eleven of these.
Admiral Goranth: Tell me more about these big ships.
Seeker: They only seem to have close in defensive weapons. Analysis suggests they are big in volume but not heavy in tonnage so maybe some sort of troop ships or freighters?
Admiral Goranth: We’ll deal with those later. Tell me about the Dreadnoughts and Cruisers.
Seeker: Standard configuration. The Dreadnoughts may be a match for Smasher or Hammer but even together will not be a problem for Havoc. The Cruisers individually will not be a problem but they look like they operate in teams so the combined firepower may cause some damage.
Admiral Goranth: So, these are the ones we need to destroy first.

Sol Fleet HQ - Ganymede Station

Analyst 3: Bandit 11 is on station and watching our fleet movements. We won’t be able to hide anything while it’s up there.
Commodore Perera: Admiral, I have some aviators who may have come up with a solution. With your permission, we’d like to set up in the small conference room.

Lt. Wang “Hornet” Bo Wen (Sqr.Ldr): May I introduce Lt. Bill “Dingo” Saunders and 2nd Lt. Stella “Orbits” Ceres.
Admiral Singh: At ease. Have a seat. Tell me your plan?
Dingo: It was Orbits’ idea, Sir. She is somewhat of a genius when it comes to trajectories.
Orbits: Yes Sir. None of our ships have the power or the fuel to accelerate straight up to Bandit-11. However, we may have a way of looping around Saturn and using its gravity to slingshot up to Bandit 11.
Dingo: We estimate that 2 attack craft each with 2 buddy drones will be sufficient to take care of Bandit 11. Each ship will carry 4 torpedoes and the buddies have six.
Hornet: And our squadron of 4 attack ships with 8 buddy drones are volunteering. The extra ships and torpedoes will ensure that we get the job done.
Commodore Perera: You need to tell the Admiral all of it.
Orbits: Once we loop around Saturn and accelerate up to Bandit 11 to destroy it, we’ll only have enough fuel to turn around and stop our forward velocity. While we will be slowly moving back to the ecliptic plane, we will not be able to rejoin the fleet without a tanker.
Admiral Singh: What’s the timeframe for this operation if approved.
Hornet: If we leave at 12:00 Hrs today, we will engage Bandit-11 around 14:00 Hrs tomorrow.
Admiral Singh: My analysts will go through what you’ve written up. Get ready to go but wait for my approval. I’ll make my decision within the hour.

Sol Fleet HQ - Ganymede Station - 14:00 Hrs

Admiral Singh: Thank you all for assembling. As you know by now, we are facing a fleet of raiders that out mass and outgun us by a huge margin. But we do have a trick up our sleeves. They are used to slugging it out with the big guns, they have never encountered carriers and our strike craft.
Admiral Vassily: In fact, apart from Bandit 11, our analysis of the sensors on the big vessels is that they just don’t have the resolution to pick out the individual strike craft. Nor do they have any Close In Point Defense weapons to engage anything this small.
Captain Park: So how are we going to get rid of Bandit 11?
Admiral Singh: We have already sent an attack squadron to take care of it. If all goes to plan, it will no longer be a problem by this time tomorrow.
Admiral Vassily: So, since they are expecting to fight our Dreadnoughts and Cruisers, that’s what we will show in our fleet movement for the next 24 hours. It’s part of our Maskirovka.
The Dreadnoughts, Shambala, Shanghai-La and Taprobana will be at the center of the formation like a spearhead. Three cruisers on each of their flanks. The carriers will be in the rear. That is until Bandit 11 is destroyed. After that, they’ll spread apart to allow the carriers through. Since there is no need for a Combat Space Patrol to protect our ships, every strike spacecraft will be launched as soon as they are in range.
This meeting went on for another hour with questions and refinement of the plan. Everything depended on Bandit 11 being taken out as scheduled.

Admiral Goranth: I don’t know if these Humans are brave or foolish. I expected them to run. But it looks like we are going to have some target practice soon.
Comms, tell all ships that I want it quick and easy. Just smash those battleships and cruisers on our way through. They are the priority but take out those troop carriers if they are in range. I don’t want to send anyone back to do cleanup.

Wolf 3 - still looping Saturn

Orbits: Hey Dingo, I’ve been doing the math and I’ve got a crazy idea.
Dingo: I’m not going anywhere, so let’s hear it.
Orbits: Between us and the buddies, we have 16 torpedoes. I don’t like the idea of going back to the fleet with a full load. What do you say that we expend them on that big bastard?
Dingo: How?
Orbits: Instead of decelerating during this orbit, we do measured burns and accelerate. We’re going to swing by Titan and use its gravity to send us towards the enemy.
Dingo: What about the Nav-Comp. What if it craps out again?
Orbits: I don’t trust it. I’m going to time all the burns and tell you where to point the nose. Do you trust me?
Dingo: With my life!
Orbits: There’s bad news! Once we swing around Titan, we’ll be going about 0.45c. We will only have enough fuel to make minor course corrections but not enough to turn around or stop. And if the enemy slows down, speeds up or even fractionally changes course, we’re going to miss them.
Dingo: So, this is a one-way mission. Okay, I’m in if you are!
Orbits: Alright! First burn is going to be in 6 minutes and 43 seconds, and I’ll give you a countdown.

Squadron 471 “The Howling Wolves” - approaching Bandit 11

And remember, as soon as the torpedoes are away, do a hard 180º turn and full power to thrusters to kill forward velocity.

Scout ship Seeker

The scout ship had detected the nine tiny ships approaching but the defensive weapons couldn’t track or target them. They were just too small. Besides, what threat could they be? The captain hadn’t even bothered to inform the Admiral of these gnats approaching.

The Battleships and Cruisers moved aside and allowed the Fleet Carriers to surge forward. So far undetected, the Destroyer squadrons made their way behind the enemy hidden by the Kuiper belt objects.
Admiral Singh: And now we wait.
Commodore Perera: Yes Sir. Oh, and a tanker has been sent to refuel Wolf Squadron. Except for Wolf 3 who is rounding Saturn again.
Admiral Singh: Keep me updated. Thank you.

Comms: Admiral, communication lost with Seeker.
Admiral Goranth: What? How?
Comms: Unknown Sir. They were transmitting and then suddenly stopped.
Admiral Goranth: Try to re-establish contact. We need their data.
Sensors: Admiral, the enemy fleet is moving. The capital ships are moving aside, and those transport carriers are moving forward.
Admiral Goranth: This is not a coincidence. They must have done something to Seeker. What are they up to? Get me all the information on those eleven big ships.
Sensors: Sir, I don’t understand what’s happening but there seems to be a cloud in front of those ships. Our sensor resolution is not enough to see what that is. Our best guess is that it’s some sort of electronic countermeasures, but it doesn’t seem very effective against our sensors.
Admiral Goranth: Guess! That’s not good enough. I want answers.

Sol Fleet HQ - Ganymede Station

Commodore Perera: Admiral, all carriers indicate that every available fighter, bomber, attack craft and their buddy drones have been launched. The count is 2,267 craft with over 9,000 torpedoes, missiles and bombs.
Admiral Singh: Tell them not to bunch up. The enemy may not be able to track and target our craft but even firing blindly those big guns can take out hundreds if they hit.
Commodore Perera: Yes sir, the attack plan is to go above or below the enemy. We believe their guns have very limited elevation. They typically target other big ships by maneuvering their entire ship and firing broadsides.

Wolf 3

Orbits: This final burn has got us pointed right to rendezvous with the enemy fleet - nice flying. You bounced off Titan's atmosphere like skipping rocks on a pond.
Dingo: Hey, I’m only the driver. I just followed your instructions. And we are traveling at 0.449c - isn’t that a record in normal space?
Orbits: Yeah! But who are we going to tell?

Sensors: Admiral, whatever that cloud is, it’s still coming towards us but is dispersing and slightly above and below our path.
Admiral Goranth: I was thinking space mines, but then why are they not in our path? Navigation, can we proceed in the gaps?
Navs: Yes sir. They seem to be leaving a huge gap in the middle.
Admiral Goranth: This still bothers me. I don’t like it.

The sixteen torpedoes and three ships slammed into the bridge area of Havoc. Just the kinetic energy due to the velocity would have been enough. But the delayed fuzes in the explosives caused even more devastation. The Admiral and entire fleet command were vaporized, as were sixteen decks and over 400 other personnel.
The sudden loss of communication from Havoc caused a vacuum in command on the other ships. There was just no structure in place for any other Captain to take charge of the fleet. The situation was unthinkable.
And that’s when the carrier strike craft struck. They specifically targeted the guns on all ten ships. In less than 30 minutes, the ships were defenseless. Confusion and panic reigned on all ships and exasperated by the fire and smoke and the blaring alarms.
Now, Admiral Singh sent in the Destroyer squadrons. The twenty-three Destroyers had been hiding in the Kuiper Belt and had stealthily been moving in while the enemy’s attention was focused elsewhere. They first hid in Neptune’s shadow and then Uranus’. Their job was to target the engines and sensors on all the enemy ships.
Pretty soon, all ten ships were literally blind and dead in space with their heads cut off. Now it was the turn of the Battleships and Cruisers. When they were done, all that was left of the ten ships was a debris field slowly scattering between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus.

Sol Fleet HQ - Ganymede Station

Admiral Singh: Please send my personal congratulations to each and every member of the fleet. Their actions will be studied for centuries to come. Now give me the numbers.
Commodore Perera: The actual number of enemy dead is unknown but estimated to be around 30,000 to 40,000. We captured over 5,000 and they are being interrogated. Unfortunately, none of these seem to be navigators who know the location of their home system.
Admiral Singh: And our losses?
Commodore Perera: I have the complete list here but 87 KIA, no wounded or missing. Top of the list are Lt. Saunders and 2nd Lt. Ceres. If Wolf 3 hadn’t taken out the bridge on the enemy ship, we might have had a bloodier fight. They transmitted all their data before they hit, so we know it was a suicide run.
Admiral Singh: This is the part I hate - writing to the families. Writing the after-action report is a breeze compared to that.
Commodore Perera: That’s why you have a staff, sir.
Admiral Singh: No, I have to do this myself. I sent them out to die. Medals just don’t seem to be enough.

H’runik Home World - location unknown

After 47 days, Seeker finally limped home. With only 2 of its 19 engines working, it was a slow journey with many short jumps. Most of its crew was dead. Fortunately, Ensign M’thul knew the coordinates to get home and Second Engineer K’gala kept the ship running … after a fashion.
C-in-C Admiral A’zeneth: Ensign M’thul, I want a full report. What happened to all our ships? Where is the treasure you should have brought back?
Ensign M’thul: Sir, I regret to inform you that the fleet was destroyed. They were ambushed. We almost didn’t make it back either.
Just then alarms blared as multiple fleets with hundreds of ships from several star systems jumped in around the system.
C-in-C Admiral A’zeneth: You fool! Why didn't you disguise your route back. You led them straight here! Now you have killed us all!

I’m going to Korea in about a week and ordered something on the Korean website of an electronics brand. I contacted the store about the process of the tax refund when I leave Korea and their statement is that it only applies to instore purchases. Cause it’s a specific configuration that’s not sold in store I cannot buy it in store.
The question I have and that’s with the knowledge of how it is in the Netherlands; stores are affiliated to some easy tax refund brand like global blue and or Global Tax Refund. But that’s the process of easy tax and the store also get a small margin. Here in the Netherlands you can skip that process and just go with your invoice of your purchase to the customs on the AirPort and get it also sorted there.. even if it’s not bought at one of the affiliated ways.
Is this also applicable to Korea? All the online resources talk about check if the store had a tax refund process
Who can make this clear for me?

Dear fellow Linux enthusiasts,
EDIT: Wayland+Nvidia is NOT ready. Also, i chose a provocative title and wording intentionally. I want to discuss with you guys and it seems to have worked :) There is much work to be done, especially on Nvidias side. Maybe some nvidia developer stumbles across this post and works extra hard, who knows.
Listen... I really love technological progression, and i want to use the most recent features available for my computer. Therefore i fell in love with the philosophy of Arch Linux. I studied computer science, so my computer really is my daily workhorse and i don't care if my setup breaks from time to time, because in 99% of the cases i can figure out how to solve it.. But also in private, i was able to do adapt all my workflows to Linux.
My research focuses on scientific visualization and machine learning. Both of which are usually done on Linux. Because of current development, i simply MUST HAVE a Nvidia graphics card for my tasks. I need Nvidia's OptiX for pathtracing my visualizations and CUDA to train neural networks on the GPU. I never had any serious issues. Right now i own a RTX 4070ti.
Because i knew about the issues with Nvidia+Wayland, i kept Xorg for good. However, Gnome decided to focus on Wayland and a recent update broke my desktop. Every time i change my monitor config with xrandr, i get no background anymore, just black. That was the moment i decided to give Wayland a try
After graduating, i finally had the time to switch from X11 to Wayland. And oh boy, was that a ride!
What needed to be done for it to get working on Arch Linux (very short version):
Sooo, now i am sometimes able to login to a Wayland session but only if i first login to a X session, then logout and login to a Wayland session again. But behold! If i try to change the configuration of my 4 (!) monitors, Wayland crashes and won't start again.
Because i was tired of Gnome doing everything to work against my believes, i decided to finally give hyprland a try. And its true what they say, it is basically all i need! The configuration and ricing was actually very fun and very easy. Also the fact that Waybar is customized with CSS is such an amazing thing!
Well but now being on Wayland and trying to work, i encountered many other problems (which btw are also present in gnome on Wayland)
It was promised that Xwayland will solve all the legacy app problems. The idea is great, just start an X session inside of Wayland. In theory. In practice, the performance is far from good. In most games i get very heavy stuttering and glitches. Fractional scaling does not really work (at least on hyprland) and i know its a great deal of unpaid work for the developers of niche apps to port to Wayland. In the end, its not plug and play.
So i know now, after reading through all the wikis and forums and reddit posts, that it is most definitely nvidia to blame. They refused to adopt Wayland in the beginning and now they are very slow to finally hold up to competitors (AMD and Intel). Nonetheless, i think its a very bad idea of so many Desktop Environments and App developers to ditch X11 all together and prematurely use Wayland as the de facto standard. Wayland is NOT ready, and as long as Nvidia does not provide working drivers, it excludes a very large amount of Linux users.
I am tired to hope for every new driver update to fix all the problems, and then it won't.
I know, it might also be strategic to force nvidia to work on the issues brought onto the table by Wayland. But i think there are many false promises around. The work which needs to be done to get Wayland working is INSANE and this can never be expected from a newcomer to Linux. I fear this might be huge step back for Desktop Linux.
I can understand that Wayland is not supposed to replace X11. But in my honest opinion, it should be. This should have been the idea all the time. I hate that i have to switch back to X for certain tasks. I want to use Wayland, the simplicity and the performance, the security and the new features. But unfortunately, it is just not ready. Now i have two windowing systems, both of which don't really work anymore with most recent software. Its a mess.

Hi there!
I recently acquired a Boden Classic. My first introduction to Strandberg was a purchase of a Boden Original 8 which has been stellar with the Fluence Moderns.
I want to replace the pickups in the Classic but am unsure about what route to take. I got the Classic to serve as my 6-string do everything guitar. My playing has me looking for all manner of tones from At The Gates to Explosions in the Sky to Wes Montgomery.
I am looking for a replacement for all three pickups - I am not too knowledgeable about what kind of neck pickup I should be looking into or middle pickup. I am a fan of the BKP Black Hawk, but man is that pricey for a single pickup! I have been watching demos of the SD pickups but really haven't been able to narrow down to anything I really feel stands out.
I am looking for a humbucker that has a nice forward sound without being too bassy. I liked the sound of the Nolly Polymath - but again seemed rather pricey. For the neck - I would really like something that has that signature tele tone to it where I can dial back the tone to get some useable jazz fingerstyle tones.
I want to keep the pickup configuration as in on the instrument - HSS - and passive electronics - but otherwise I am looking for some suggestions! Budget for neck and bridge together would be nice to have right around $250-300. I would also like to have a bridge pickup that supports coil splitting as I want to try out the spin-a-split with a concentric pot.

2024.05.12 02:11 Beginning-Guard-4211 Program Remote start possibility

I am new to arduinos. But from what I understand so far that I see is that you can set up inputs to produce a desired output to make these things work.
Before I buy an arduino. I wanted to see if it was feasible and not a waste of time.
From what I have gathered so far is that there is no availability to buy a remote start for my model of car because in the 11th gen civic, only the automatics had the ability to remote start only on the touring, and Sport Touring. My Sport touring is manual and recently found out it does not have it. This was one of the main reasons I bought it, for that.
Getting into the technicals, so from what I know so far, the car has AutoSS, which by minimum is required to have some kind of neutral detetcting switch. And utilizes the cars speed, and clutch, and gear shift, parking brake, and some kind of way to measure volts or amps, Im not sure. all 5 have to be 0, not pressed, neutral, not engaged, exceed power consumption, for it not to beep at me with out of parameters warnings or turn back on, on its own. If I exceed 0mph it turns on. If I engage the brake, it prevents AutoSS from shutting the engine off/ign on. If you press the clutch, it also turns on. If you run the fan too high it turns the car back on shortly. This is all things noticed so far from driving the car.
Surprisingly the gas pedal has no affect on operation of AutoSS. So it's safe to assume to leave the gas pedal out of it.
Now this is where it gets tricky. The car is supposed to have remote start, but does not. I'm sure by this point in the game, cars are all programmed and have no remote start module (like for example the ones you add in) and the infotainment system on the Touring and ST models is completely different than the cheaper models where you would have an auto and need to buy one to "upgrade" and just plug in the patch harness to it and boom you have working remote start. But the premise and function behind the automatic transmission and remote start is that no matter what you do, the car will not let you turn it off safely or park it or take the key out, whatever the case unless it's in neutral or park. And thus when you remote start it doesn't drive away. Which I'd imagine have something to do with this. And the reason I don't want to add in one of those remote start modules is because I dont think it will work correctly or safely if it even worked at all.
The only thing remotely close tech wise is the Civic Si. They are only manual. So the electronics and sensors And software configuration are likely the same if not very similar, however still with the Si no remote start. Either way the tech setup on the cars like in the AutoSS paragraph is clearly different than your regular automatic transmission SS systems. Honda didn't want remote start on manuals (or so the salesmen said)
Now with all that said, now the hard part is getting all the sensors to work with each other and "play nice" and not have conflicting functions (AutoSS, Alarm, Keyfob range disabling "If applicable", Auto touch button unlocking/locking doors, "ign on" requires a clutch press regardless of turning engine on no matter what, and the whole main issue of it being in gear or not which the car does have a sensor for clearly from driving it, I noticed it screams at me if I drop it in a gear while the the ign on/engine off AutoSS is enabled.) And then the issue about the AutoSS has an override switch but i think it's non issue because the car defaults to AutoSS enabled no matter what. Then again that brings me back to another key point, will the AutoSS even interfere with the car because it is hard disabled until the car reaches a certain coolant temp and it wont shut off the engine/ign on when you come to a stop in that specific case. Additionally it wont hit AutoSS either if it was previously stopped and disabled with the override switch or other reason or parking brake is on. Which the parking brake we will want to implement into it later. Just this is the initial phase of even trying to see if it will work
I really am not sure what gremlins I'm about to stir up by trying to add my own remote start with an arduino.
Now is arduino even the solution to this? I really don't know. Since there is nothing else out there that looks even remotely safe or compatible I'm not gonna try it. I haven't really looked into it too much but do you wire in the arduino in parallel or in series to the signals
Is it worth it? Probably not. But I don't care, I need my remote start and I refuse to buy an automatic. I need my car to guarantee me to last longer than 150k miles. No they don't last longer than that and no you won't change my mind about auto reliability. I'm here for arduino usage/feasibility.
I myself personally have yet to see any cross references regarding this exact issue.

I have a 2021 Epiphone Les Paul Special I (wraparound bridge only no tuneomatic so same configuration as the Junior). The electronics I currently have in it sound decent and it feels good playing it which makes me want to put Seymour Duncan Distortions in it all the more for one of Epiphone’s cheapest. The trouble is tuning stability. The thing can’t stay in tune for longer than a few seconds and it’s very frustrating! The thing was neglected for a year before I got it. A friend of mine got it wanting to learn but got frustrated with it and just never played it again. I’ve changed up the strings and noticed the tuners were pretty shitty and the heads struggled to stay on no matter how much I tightened the screws on them, so I changed them out for some Musiclily replacements which are pretty good for the price. My tuners don’t rattle anymore and it has improved the stability A LITTLE. Are the bridges garbage on this thing? I’m thinking of just tearing this thing up, going all out on the Duncan pickups, putting a Gotoh wraparound bridge in it. Is it drop in or will some routing be required? I probably do have to get the truss rod adjusted a little bit if I take it in for a set up. If I do take it in for the set up, I just want to have everything needed at once.

Audeze Maxwell Review after 1 month
I decided to give a super comprehensive review of my Maxwells after daily driving them for 1 month. Will try to be as in depth and precise and honest as possible and try to cover up any concerns I've spotted in recent reddit posts. Note that this review may be limited in the scope due to the short time period of daily driving them but I think it'd be helpful to people regardless simply due to how much time I've spent using them.
READ THE ENTIRE REVIEW
To set the context, I switched over from a Steelseries Arctis 5 Wired Gaming Headset. I daily drove that for around 5 years until April 10th (last month) when I received the Maxwells. I mainly play COD MW3, Warzone, Sim racing. I listen to electronic music, pop, rap, dance, alternative, reggaeton, and a bit of rock.
I ordered the Maxwells from Amazon and it was supplied to Amazon by WORLD WIDE AUDIO.
First Impressions when I opened the box and tried them on:
-They felt heavy but that was expected as that's what everyone was saying about them
-The quality felt super premium
-I wear glasses and the fit on my head was proper (both sides on the band were attached by the middle holes...stock config). However it got even better after I realized my glasses were slightly bent when sitting on my face. I adjusted my glasses frame and the Maxwells fit much better now.
My feedback over my time using them:
Battery Life and Volume
-Battery life is incredible and it's definitely not over exaggerated. I use the Maxwells for teams and meetings during the day with music listening thrown in there as well. I'm also sometimes connected to both the dongle and Bluetooth on another PC (this isn't an everyday thing however but I'd say roughly 3-4 out of the 5 days of the week) I usually have gaming sessions in the night as well (discord + music + game audio). My listening volume are usually ~60% in-game volume + 100% discord voice audio (not 200%) + 40% music volume on apple music with hi-res lossless audio and 40%-70% desktop volume. My windows sample rate and bit depth are set to 24 bit and 96000Hz.
With these conditions, I can safely say I averaged 1.5-2 weeks of usage before them dying and needing to be re-charged to 100%.
Sound Quality and Equalizer Settings
-The sound quality at first did not seem like a big jump but as my ears got accustomed to it and I adjusted EQ after researching some EQ settings on reddit for a more punchy bass (I attached a screenshot of the EQ I currently use) I started to hear more and more with respect to sound separation and overall sound quality. I haven't tried my Arctis 5s to really give the effect of the SQ diff just yet but something tells me its gonna be drastic. I am no audiophile or anything but I can definitely appreciate the SQ the Maxwells give in music and movies/shows. They really do sound amazing, although you may not notice the difference right away, which was the case with me.
My EQ Settings (this may not be ideal for everyone's ears)
Drivers and crinkling of the film and crackling sounds (Please read)
-When I got the Maxwells, I took off the ear cups the same day to inspect the drivers because I saw other people reported that their drivers were looking crinkly and wavy (I don't know if its the drivers or the film or what the correct terminology is for them but its the plasticky sheet that you can see when you take off the ear cups). Mine however were 100% flawless with no crinkles. This changed however over 2-3 weeks of usage. I frequently used the power button and other controls on the headset along with volume testing (obnoxious volume like 90+ on heavy re-bassed songs...this was super dumb of me and I acknowledge that). I didn't know any better to not do this. I did experience some crackling sounds at those impractical listening volumes and I definitely learnt my lesson. From my research, this is expected especially at unreasonable volumes. However, I can safely say I get MINIMUM crackling at reasonable listening volumes (0-70) and it truly isn't anything to talk about. I frequently walk around and do tasks with them on within my house and 99.9999999% of the time I don't get any crackling. And when I do get the crackling sound, which is extremely extremely rare (moving around or sitting at my desk) it sounds like its the song's fault (or apple music's streaming fault) or whatever I'm listening to at the time and not the Maxwell's fault. Not sure if that helps but that's as best as I can explain my experience crackling wise.
After inspecting them after the 1 month of usage, I noticed slight crinkles on the left and right side however they haven't increased since the first time I saw them which was during weeks 2-3. The left has slightly more crinkles than the right. Sound still remains unchanged and cannot perceive any changes in them, if there are any.
NOTE: I do baby the headset (and my gear in general) a lot but I also use them a lot hence why I think this is a representative account of usage

Comfort over time and adjusting to the weight
After adjusting my glasses, the headphones sat better on my head and face. I tried using different configurations for the attachment for the band points and I ended up going back to stock configuration. This works best for me and my head shape. I resorted to not using the boom mic as I haven't gotten any complaints with respect to mic quality and sound from co-workers on Teams or friends on Discord.
With respect to weight, I have definitely adjusted to the weight and they truly feel normal now that I am adjusted. I am not sure if removing the boom mic had anything to do with that but I will most likely not be going back to using it any time soon. The boom mic felt huge in front my face.
With respect to the ear pads, they feel just fine for me. Toasty to an extent when I don't have my AC turned on but it's nothing I'd complain about. I considered the Wicked Cushions Pads but I decided to give myself a month with stock pads then decide if to purchase those. And I don't see myself be purchasing them unless I'm looking for a small upgrade later on.
Audeze software and tips for initial setup/future firmware updates
I only use the software to check my battery level or adjust EQ but rarely to adjust EQ now as I think I've tuned them to my liking and don't have any more changes to make. My initial experience with the software however during the setup phase was mostly seamless with a few hiccups but I recommend following any documentation or guide which outlines the setup process to update firmware etc. You can find it with a google search. I'm too lazy to link it.
I would recommend following the Audeze community on reddit to see if its worthwhile upgrading to new firmware updates because I believe I saw a post where someone said the most recent update (at the time of this posting) impacted their SQ. I didn't read much into it and I need to do more research on this but I'd recommend using other's people's experience to decide whether to update or not., From what I gathered, you can also rollback updates.
My Pros
-Amazing SQ once tuned to your liking
-Reliable battery life
-Comfortable once you get used to it
-Fulfils the role of a gaming headset (not SUPERIOR sound-staging but still good at least for me and the games I play)
-Wireless connectivity via the Dongle and Bluetooth work flawless with great range (although I noticed interference by my microwave when I stood close to it while the microwave was being used). This is most likely normal and I assume it has something to do with the literal micro waves emitted from the microwave.
-Great build quality
My Cons
-They're pretty big, even for over ear headphones but this is not necessarily a problem for me
-After seeing the reddit posts on crackling and the left side straight up dying and not playing anymore, I am always worried if my pair is gonna reach to that horrible point or if one of the sides are gonna stop playing one day
-I generally baby my gear but its an inconvenience with respect to piece of mind when having to be extra careful with pressing buttons and taking them off my head or putting them down on my desk etc. to prevent exerting excess pressure on the drivers. I'm probably being too safe but after seeing some reddit posts this may have given them a bad rep which makes me take these precautions.

I made a controller!

TL;DR

I made a custom controllebutton box from parts I got off AliExpress and my own code. The pictures show the process roughly. I am very proud of myself.

First off, some backstory

I've been toying with the idea for a while, since star citizen is one of 2 games (the other being farming simulator 22) that has a bunch of keybinds. This past week I had spring break from uni and decided this would be the week I committed and took the time to make this project a reality. I had some rough idea of what I wanted to go for, but ended up winging it for a pretty large amount of the choices I needed to make while making this controller.

How does it work?

I figure I should take some time to explain how it all functions, as I've gotten questions about that from some friends IRL already too.

The brain

I wrote the code in C on an [ESP32-S3 development board](https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/1005006069905213.html?spm=a2g0o.order\_list.order\_list\_main.20.21ef79d2CdD5zy&gatewayAdapt=glo2nld) that I got off AliExpress. I chose this board because it's entirely compatible with the Arduino library, but offers more GPIO pins than any arduino that has USB peripheral capabilities. The most challenging part was figuring out how to make use of the board's USB hardware in such a way that my PC (running Windows 11, but that shouldn't matter, as it shouldn't be platform-dependant) would recognize it as a controller. I am not new to programming, but I am fairly new to embedded systems. Luckily, I found a library for that, originally written for Arduino, but later ported to ESP32. This made my life a hell of a lot easier.

The inputs

Around the same time I ordered the ESP32 boards off of AliExpress, I also looked around there to see what kind of buttons and stuff I wanted in it.
I ended up ordering sets of 6 buttons in 4 different colors; white, black, yellow and red. Of these 24 buttons, I used 15 in total in the controller.
I also ordered some rotary encoders, and some knobs for them. Not much to say about them, apart from the fact that these gave me hell and I would think twice about including these again in a future build. More on that later.
Saving the best for last, I also ordered these awesome toggle switches with LED indicator lights in them. I originally wanted 1 red one with a red cap, and 3 white ones with white caps, but AliExpress being AliExpress, my order got messed up and I ended up with some orange parts. I reordered a bunch of that stuff like 3 different times, and eventually ammassed a collection of parts that I could frankenstein a set of toggle switches from. As these are on-off toggles, and holding a button down very long rarely makes sense in video games outside of movement, I configured the toggles to fire a short pulse once when flipped.

The enclosure

This ended up taking the longest out of the whole ordeal. I had a rough idea for what shape I wanted, but didn't know what I wanted to make it out of. The 2 main candidates were a plastic hobby electronics box, and wood. My main criterium for it was that I didn't want the inputs facing straight up or straight forward, but rather facing me at a roughly 45 degree angle. I eventually settled on wood, since that was gonna be easier to make an angled box with. With that knowledge, I started designing a box, before quickly abandoning the drawing phase and just winging it. This ended up being a shitty decision, as I made a bunch of mistakes that could have been easily avoided, had I employed a tiny amount of critical thinking.
In the end, I screwed together a box out of MDF, painted it, and just sawed off the corner to accommodate the face plate that I *had* spent some time designing. This was the part I actually cared about, after all. Speaking of:

The face plate

I was originally planning to make the face plate out of aluminum, but upon finding out that my dad didn't really keep any aluminum sheets around the shed that were large enough to make the plate out of, he recommended me some incredibly dence plastic he had laying around. I wouldn't be able to reproduce the name now, but it looked like wood, had this very slippery laminate coating on the outside, and was as hard as metal, so it was a bitch to machine. I ended up with a crooked grid of holes for the inputs after an afternoon of ruining drill bits.
When I decided I was done with the machining part, I put a vinyl wrap over it. I was originally planning to do a carbon fiber vinyl wrap, but that stuff turned out to be a bit more expensive where I live than I was willing to wait a reasonable amount of time for, so my dad gave me this vinyl he had laying around that's literally older than me (I am 22 in 10 days). This ended up being a pretty cool nostalgic thing for him, as this was vinyl my parents used to line their shop shelves back in the day, and also gave my controller a unique look.

With all the components gathered and prepared,

All I had to teach myself to solder, connect it all up, screw it together and plug it in.
Yeah... Easier said than done. Soldering took me about 4-5 hours, with the learning part included. Ended up going to bed around 3AM that night lol. When I was done, however, I plugged it in, opened the little windows controller tester window thingy and almost screamed when everything just worked. I was ecstatic.

Using it

After a good night's rest, it was time to play Star Citizen with it all day. I got my buddy on a discord call, and we both booted up the game and went off doing missions. A controller like this isn't a life changing experience, but it definitely feels damn cool to use. I bound ship power to the toggle in the top left, and ship thrusters to the right, followed by landing gear and VTOL. You definitely get that cool sci-fi sensation, flipping all those switches to get your ship ready to lift off. Exactly what I had hoped for!

Future plans

After using it for a few days, I can say with 100% confidence that I will be making a V2 of this box. While I'm absolutely over the moon with this controller, there's definitely stuff about it that's less than ideal, and I will be improving on all these things with another version later down the line, when I, as a mere student, have some disposable income again. Things I will improve:

Enclosure upgrades

While this MDF box was an alright start, nice way to learn some power tool usage, and provides more than enough structural integrity (you could kill a man with this thing), it's imprecise, crooked and overall clunky. When I'm able to spend some proper money again, I'm planning to buy a 3D printer. That way I can attempt a new, better, lighter, more compact enclosure. That is, after I'm done screaming at my PC over CAD software.
This will also allow me to make more dynamic face plates, and print overlays with different labels per input for different setups and games.

Less buttons

I wanted to future proof this box by making sure I put more than enough buttons on it. While still a nice idea, I hadn't thought of the concept of using modifier buttons in my controller. This would allow me to program multiple layers of buttons, drastically reducing the amount of physical buttons I need to put on it. I would also use different buttons, because while these look very good, they are very very cheap. you can head the springs in some of them, some can rotate in their housing, while others can't (ideally none would rotate, but I at least want consistency) and I ruined multiple by melting the plastic just from heating up the contacts while soldering.

Rotary encoders

Yup, these fucking encoders... These gave me lots of trouble, both in figuring out how to handle them in software, and in hardware limitations. When turning them too quickly, they start giving off wacky (sometimes wrong) directional signals. I later found out that this is because most rotary encoders, these included, are only rated for up to 1 full rotation per second. You can imagine quickly surpassing that when wanting to scroll somewhere fast in game and stuff like that. I'd get other encoders for this in the future, rated for higher speeds. I would also probably only put 1 or 2 or them in the controller, as they seem to not be as versatile as I originally expected.

But hey, it works!

This was my first proper DIY project, and it gave me such a rush to complete it! I did a lot of stuff for the first time in this project, and learned a ton of new skills and knowledge along the way. I am by no means under the delusion that I am an expert now, but I'm at least less scared to tackle problems like this again.
