With Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s rap feud raging over the last month, I got curious about what their natal charts say about each of them as rappers, and how the astrological synastry between the two has fueled this chart-topping fight. Luckily we have an accurate birth time for both Drake and Kendrick, so we can see exactly how their charts overlap.

Inconjunct Suns

Kendrick’s streams of his back catalog are up 50%, while Drake’s are down 5% and his reputation has taken a massive knock. But Kendrick has taken a hit as well. Having rap’s two biggest stars accusing each other of heinous crimes might drive up streams in the short run, but it’s a dangerous game. So Language is irrelevant as I would love to explore world cinema. Im planning to write a script based on a group of friends who gets involved in a crime committed by a gangster and the actions that follows in a single day. Would love to explore this genre a bit more before starting to write my script.

A few days ago, I received a file from a journalist friend who teaches at a private university in Montevideo. I known this person for years now and the exchange with her on our countless bar nights basically made me want to try to study journalism. After I started my career we became even closer and we shared concerns about the evolution of information, social media and the infamous cerebral callosity we acquired to endure the tragedy.
My friend, let's call her Valeria, was part of a public competition to accompany a minor scientific expedition to the Uruguayan Antarctic base. Her thesis was about investigating how information reception behaves in remote and isolated areas.
I barely read it , but basically tries to show that information circulates and is received in a particular way in these circumstances by a group of unfamiliar people living under extreme climatic and isolation conditions, having as an example, life in submarines and in military bases in Siberia. The Antarctic base gave her the chance to observe some of her postulates up close.
Finally, she was chosen and traveled with this scientific group in a commercial flight Montevideo - Santiago de Chile to later arrive at Punta Arenas and fly to the Antarctic base.
The last communication I had with her before she sent me the almost 90 photographic captures of the Journal, was on March 15, 2024.
We talked over the phone about how the weather was in Montevideo, that it does not stop raining and the cars are practically floating on the streets. She told me that the transport that was going to take them back was having mechanical problems and they would probably have to order spare parts for the plane from Punta Arenas. Then She told me that it is freaking cold down there and his colleagues are all very boring. Nobody has whisky for the evenings. We laughed about that part because I told her to bring at least one bottle of Grappa in her purse.
Before saying goodbye, she told me they had spotted some old metal structures south of the base. The soldiers told her that it was safe to go near that part so she was going to explore them. It wasn't there when they first arrived and that the recent and atypical heat wave probably must have exposed it. I told her to be careful and we said goodbyes.
Three days later I received an email. “Valeria shared a file with you.” As I start to see what it was about she calls me.
“Mauro? MAURO!, can you hear me?” She said in a nervous and excited voice.
“I can barely hear you, what happened?”I asked half asleep, while still lying on my bed.
“Listen to me carefully, don't talk, just listen” I could tell by her agitation that she was walking fast or maybe running. The creaking footsteps in the snow could be heard in the background. in the distance, a catastrophe-type siren was blaring.
“Are you alright? What happened? What's that noise?” I said, now sitting on the edge of my bed.
“I sent you a file. Transfer it to a flash drive, delete history and reset your cell phone, the computer and your email address. I'll explain everything later, it'll be worth it.”
“What? What are you talking about Vale?, what for? Tell me what's going on - I started to yell at her, in slide panic.
“Listen, I found something that is not supposed to exist. In the diary he explains everything. I'm going back to the base, I think someone is following me, I set off an alarm or something. Save that file for me until I get there and remember that... “
There were two loud booms and the sound of water invading the transmission. A choked bubbling and cracking sound reminded me of ice collapsing. My friend had fallen into the water, in Antarctica.
“HEY, are you OK?! What happened?!” - I kept screaming hysterically until the call was cut off.
I looked at my cell phone for a second. My hands were shaking, I tried calling several times but the phone went dead. I looked at the compressed file. I jumped up and ran to the dining room furniture, frantically looking for a white flash drive that had to be in a drawer somewhere. I couldn't find it, so I went back to my desk. I pulled the drawer so hard that it came off the rail and fell to the floor. I started to dig through my belongings on the floor, coins, papers, cards, nothing.
I thought, I struggled to remember where I had fucking put it. Finally I saw my backpack peeking out from behind the desk chair, I jumped on it and in the second small pocket from the inside, there was a cheap white 16G flash drive. I put it in the pc, downloaded the file directly there, took it out and fabric restored the entire system on the computer. I do the same with my cell phone as Valeria said.
At the time I didn't even question if those measures really prevented me from being tracked, and the idea that that was the reason made panic run through my body like lightning. Sitting on the floor of my room next to the mess, my body was numb with tension. After a few seconds, I rebooted my cell phone to try to call Lucia, her sister.
“Hello?”
“Lucia, it's that you? I think something bad happened to Vale, I hear her over the phone as if she fell into the water, and some rumbling. I don't know what I heard, I think she got into some trouble or some place she shouldn't have been - I realized that I was mumble and not saying anything clear. For some reason, I didn't mention the file.
“It can't be Mauro, I just spoke to her on the phone. She was at the airport in Santiago de Chile at the boarding lounge, we talked for about half an hour, she told me she was bringing a fancy bourbon to share and…”
I stopped listening, it didn't make sense, how could it be? what the fuck is going on!
“Mauro, are you ok? Is something wrong? it's too early, are you sure you didn't dream it?”
“Did you talk to her? half an hour ago? But...,” I exclaimed without being able to hide my confusion.
“Are you... sure it was her?”
“Yes, of course you moron, it's my sister! Did you smoke pot again on an empty stomach?”
“No, you're right, nevermind, thanks Lucia, talk to you soon.” I ended the call without letting her say goodbye.
Had I dreamt about it? I erased everything now, how will I know if I dreamt it? I hesitated absurdly.
This is surreal, I thought to myself as I looked at the flash drive in my hand. I refocused my attention and went to the attic looking for my brother's old laptop he left me before going to live in Spain. It was practically useless, but it was enough to see the file. I turned it on, waited for the decrepit Windows XP to load, and put the flashdisk in, opened the compressed folder and found two files.

I decided to open the journal first. From what I interpreted from the loading order of the screenshots, after reading it, I opened the image of the last page.

Day 243 of the 2nd mission 10: 40 am. March 12, 2019.
I am the head researcher of the Psychological Area at the UN Antarctic base; I'm currently assigned to Project Sisyphus categorized as the highest classified rank.
This is going to sound crazy, but the person living with my family is my clone.
It still surprises me when I say it out loud, but after being able to replicate the brain-muscular history (a perfect copy of our memory) of any person and having mastered replicating every cell of our bodies at any age, it was only a matter of time before the development of social biotechnology would emerge. Now and by worldwide agreement, as a complete secret.
There is absolutely no shame or a shred of ethics in what we do, there is no longer any constraint on what we can do to the subjects for the sake of research. That haunts me every day.
It all went to shit so fast, I doubt anyone will come to our rescue. The protocol says so, the base in the face of an imminent security risk will erase itself. The structure was designed to collapse methodically following a protocol of incineration and sinking. The immediate perimeter has underwater mines that make the ice collapse almost imperceptibly, but deadly to anyone who tries to leave.
No one can escape from the base, neither the research staff nor the subjects. Our place in the world is already taken.
I only hope that this journal along with my lab notes will be found at some point. I managed to construct a small insulating gasket for it so I trust it will survive in case this part of the building collapses as well.

At the exact moment I ended the reading I received a video call that made me jump with fright, it is...
Valeria.
With my pulse shaking, I answered the call.
“Hi you! The flight was delayed, can you believe it? This one is absolutely in my top three, worst trips of my life. I'm really hungry and everything is so expensive here. What are you up to? Tell me something, please, I'm soooo bored!”
I looked at her with confusion and I couldn't manage to pronounce words. When I was about to modulate an answer she interrupted me.
“What's the matter Mauro?, are you on pause? Is the signal OK? HELLO! Can you hear me? Can you see me?” She started to walk through the boarding lounge looking for better signal
“Yes yes, Valeria I can hear you.”
She laughed and looked at me with a face between sensual and serious, and continued.
“Do you miss me?” while raising the phone jokingly as she typically does in her selfie pose.
“Valeria, don't you remember calling me earlier today?”
“I? called you? Nop. Why? Ah! By the way, did you know there are penguins in Tierra del Fuego? I would have liked to go and see them.” She continued his verbose conversation in a carefree tone, with her typical hand gestures and playing with his hair.
“Well, at last!” She interrupted herself and shouted, jumping up from her chair.
“We are being called to board, see you in a couple hours!” She said goodbye with a smiling sonority, and began to walk towards the boarding gate.
But at the last second, before ending the call, her gesture changed. She looked directly at the camera with a hardened and emotionless face and almost mechanically, she whispered.
“(I'm going to retrieve that diary).”
My stomach dropped to the floor and I could feel as if my blood was running cold with fear. I could not shake the awful and eerie feeling that this person, who was returning, whom I had never in my life called by her full name, was not my friend.
So, the next couple of hours I put everything in to transcribe the rest of important passages of the diary. Something was compelling me to do it, i can't explain it, Some mix between moral duty, and morbid curiosity. Here is my selection of it.
Lab notes. day 96 of 1st mission 08:00 am December 22, 2016.
Subject JON X012:
First physical assessments: Normal, alert and inquisitive, exhibits some alteration to screens.
We place 100 cc of sedative in room air. The subject attentively follows the narrative of scenario B5 “The last mission”.
The subject responds positively to the premises of the story, where he is asked to address an audience threatened by a natural disaster, convincing them to choose a certain path out of the city.
He offers to collaborate but fails to articulate the message with the power to overcome the simulation.
We resort to pouring 125cc of concentrated Psilocybin into the air as stipulated in the protocol sheet.
The vocal frequency and body language reading receptors in the observation room are activated. The subject manages to formulate a series of premises articulately and with discursive power, circulating around the observation room.
Successful reaction.
We move on to the next stage.

Today we received a new lab assistant for the night shift. Much needed as I was covering these shifts myself and am really burned out. The underground operates at full power at those hours, the hum of the machinery becomes unbearable. This must be why the rooms have an insulating structure.

Day 112 of the 1st mission 19:00 pm January 08, 2017.
The new integration is not very bright. He labeled the transcripts wrong again yesterday and doesn't seem to fully understand the importance of these. I'm going to have to go through the whole method with him again. I don't have much patience lately, it's not his fault, he seems like a nice guy and it's real that I need a second of confidence. Better train him from now on. Maybe start a sketch of a short explanatory document.

Small introductory guide.
When the subjects conclude the incubation and breeding process (pages 19 to 52 of the manual), that is to say, that they have at least remembered speech and with it, depending on the time in which they lived, reading and writing, they generally begin to perceive themselves. Just before situational curiosity is when the psychology department comes into action. Either to run the “stand by” simulation or the main tests.

We tried not to use familiar ones, as human smells are impossible to replicate. We found this out in a complicated way. We tried to recreate a conversation between RR subject X003 (Reagan) and his mother, but he recognized the fakery by the absence of body odor. His mind collapsed and we had to move him to the Underground. The people in Area C (Private Clients) almost lost a very large Chinese account.
After calibrating the subject, we ran both psychological and behavioral tests, scanned retinas, analyzed blood, as well as vocal and body language. But what has really yielded surprising results are the free interviews. It is amazing what some minds are capable of with the right environmental and chemical stimulation. That's why transcription is vital (!!)
Our area develops BC (Behavioral Algorithms) which are then bought by the private sector, and some government agencies.
To give you some examples: Twitter was an idea of subject JO X008 (Orwell).
Bots in social media and the use of big data was an idea of JG X002 (Goebbels) and KM X014`s worst nightmare (Marx) was bought by Amazon.
It is an arduous process and the success rate is low, but when we achieve the goal per subject, well, these results are a mein part of the latest revolutions of mankind.
So follow the lab rules, never refer to subjects by their actual historical name, and always remember, they are assets, not people.

Day 117 of the 1st mission 16:30 am January 12, 2017.
Today is a rest day all over area D. I miss many things from the old world that I thought I would never miss, taking a bus, standing in line with strangers, and today I miss Sundays. We only have one on the month. So as usual we gather in the rest area to listen to a liberated jukebox that tries to lighten the mood. I know, right? Why I wrote about this “Saturday” photocopy, well besides the same nostalgic drunks, I was approached by a person I didn't recognize.
From what I understood he was a rehabilitated alcoholic, maybe that's why I didn't see him on “Saturdays”. He must be in his 50's, he was portly and wore thick black-rimmed glasses, he seemed to have a slight limp, I noticed it when he went to refill my beer.
I am a very reserved person and find it hard to talk to people. Truth be told, I've lost the desire to talk to people here. What can you actualy fucking talk about here, if it's not about the same thing. Everything revolves around work and some inter-area gossip, which never escalates much.
But yesterday was Clara's birthday and to hide the remorse and sadness of only having shared with her the first 3 years of her life, I had a few too many beers.
We chatted about banal aspects of life in isolation, and the things we miss. For him it was going to the stadium to watch soccer with his grandchildren. I think it was loneliness and nostalgia that brought us together that night.
His name was Sigfried, I don't know if I spelled it right, but it was clearly Nordic, i notice because of some of the words he mixed up with English. He works as the underground level security manager. We all know that it is one of the most restricted areas and what we have learned in these almost 10 years in the project, is that the more restricted, the less questions you should ask.
But that day, I think I felt the urge to hurt myself, to go off the rails, so I asked what we all suspected but no one knew for sure. I asked about the blenders. I wish I hadn't.

Day 126 of the 1st mission 08:00 am January 21, 2017.
I almost can't express how furious I am today, but I'm going to try because if I don't, I'm going to punch the new assistant in the face. He has nothing to do with this, he's just mildly irritating.
Anyway, in Genetic Mapping or area A, they approved the incubation of another Anomaly. It seems to be an express request from a major shareholder and there is not much to say. Anomalies are very risky to reproduce, nature is wise, and for some reason it placed them in history moments where they had their limitations.
It seems that after the crisis of 2010 with “The Russian Devil” it is no longer scary enough. New school morons... If they had been there they wouldn't even dare to think about it. I AM FURIOUS.
The arguments are that this case lived longer, that the clone would be in his 70s, and that he possessed noticeably more “civilized” traits. As if the court of the last Zar had not been somewhat civilized.
Personally I think this is a big mistake. Since the discovery that some people possess unknown DNA components and with the 2010 background, they should draw the line. Today was the last session with subject JON X012, I managed to extract the last retinal and body language readings, as usual before sending them to Underground level. We ran the dinner scenario, the truth is that is one of the best simulations we have achieved. The subjects are relaxed resulting in the best free interview environment. This one was no exception, I must say I understand the charm of the “messiah” turned out to be quite an entertaining subject. I hope his next generation will be similar.

I was tasked with the continuous monitoring of subject NT X004. I am not at all happy with this transfer. First of all, I know nothing about area B of engineering and technology. Secondly, I still think this is a really bad idea.
One of the laboratories has been set up with the essential simulation equipment and personnel. Tomorrow we start with the calibration.

First interview with subject NT X004, we run simulation scenario 54-A, “Signal from another planet.”
Subject is observed to be receptive at first but quickly changes to paranoid. We administer 300cc of MDMA via air, according to protocol.
We introduce the reconstructed figure of a colleague in a cry for help speech.
The Subject laughs and doesn't believe a word, we move to a physical approach plane,
I volunteer myself with a room operator from the engineering area, we show him unfinished plans of an experimental vacuum propulsion engine.
He laughs again and tells us that we are not who we say we are.
We administer 50cc of DMT and move on to the next scenario.
From the screen an astronaut with non-human features sends a distress signal and intergalactic coordinates.
The subject looks thoughtful, reassesses, picks up the blueprints and begins to shout out values and what appears to be mathematical and physical formulas.
Air is charged with percentages of absolute sedation.

I'm not sure what happened today, this is the first time in 10 years that a subject overcame the deception of 3 simulations. We had to place absolute sedation in the air, as risky as we know it is. I recommended that we restart the process from scratch, but it was a resounding no, the client is in a hurry.
I need to get more involved in this case to recalibrate the subject. I don't know if I want to. The words before full sedation still resonate with me. “are you still using DC current? interesting...”

Something happened, I don't quite know what. The rooms have an emergency lockdown active. Outside hear security personnel mobilizing. I tried the intercom but it didn't work. The insulation prevents my screams from being heard from the outside. If this goes on another day I'm going to break the lock. I'm going to set my backpack to the bare minimum.

Day 157 of the 1st mission 21:00 pm February 21, 2017.
Yesterday I heard explosions in the B area. I couldn't take it anymore and broke the lock. Whatever it was I had to go out and see. The corridors were dark, and the underground buzzer went on, at least that worked.
I went right to the north staircase, down the 4 floors in near darkness, the power was failing. The entrance to the underground area was barricaded but I managed to see a figure peeking out from inside as they felt me making noises.
It was Sigfried, he pointed me in the doors direction and I entered through a heavily armored side door. I was surprised by the immensity of this section, it encompassed a large hall below almost all the sectors of the base. In front of us there were 4 large industrial pipes with switches and multiple smaller pipes coming out of their bases. These were repeated like mosaics throughout the area until they disappeared into the distance in the darkness.
Leaning against one of them were 3 officers in formerly white coats and a nearly dead guard bloodied on the floor. Poor guy, his legs were crushed with his flesh in the open. He was lying in a pool of his own blood.
He had a blank stare and was panting, it seemed from the pale of his skin, that his fate was imminent. My asthma began to pound in my chest sharply, so I reached into my bag looking for my inhaler. I told them between visible gasps of bad breath to please tell me what's happened.
One of the doctors had a badge from area B and another from area E which corresponds to bio-armamentistics. The latter burst into tears and said “We deserve it, every one of us, we deserve it”.
I knew the other guy, he is an engineer in area B. I could hear him babbling almost nonsensically about, as why they never thought about it, an issue with electrical power.
He looked at me carefully as if recognizing me and grabbed me tightly by my jacket pulling me close to his face transformed for the panic.
“He let them out, all of them!” but not only that, no no no no... he told them the truth. Nikola fucking Tesla hacked us and told them the truth.”
He began to laugh frantically with a face of absurdity until he burst into a choked cry. At that moment everything went dark. The emergency lights activated, and from far away and getting closer, along with the emergency sirens that began to sound, we heard a large mass of people screaming and running through the corridors outside.
Sigfried looked at me as they started to pound on the shielded door and said.
“We're fucked.”

After finishing the transcription, my whole body began to want to flee, the walls of my house were tinged with a faint blue light as the cloudy dusk came through the window, the lights turned off by my abstraction at the computer gave way to the dark corridors that began to feel alien. As I gently closed the pc my ears began to ring as if under pressure, my breathing became more present and the vibration of my cell phone interrupted my trance.
A call from the office. It was to tell me that I had a vacation week pending, that by schedule, I had to take it starting today.
Sons of bitches, now they even choose your time off - I thought at first, but at the same time I found the voice on the phone very strange, and to tell the truth, the procedure itself.
The anger turned into confusion that only added to the paranoia. The sounds in the street began to seem erratic, a chaotic and strangely familiar feeling came over me. My senses seemed increasingly acute, and they screamed:
Go away.
I grabbed the old laptop, the flash drive and headed for the bus station. The short trip from my house seemed like a long journey. People on the street looked at me with strange faces, the cell phone kept ringing with unknown numbers on the screen and a strange idea began to formulate in my head that whispered “Them, Valeria is one of Them”.
Already on the platforms I rummaged through my backpack where I confirmed that I had the key to the family beach house in San Luis, 60 km to the east of Montevideo. I turned off my cell phone, got on a bus heading to another and much far away town called Treinta y Tres. Sat near the last seat and slipped my cell phone in my front pocket of the seat in front of me, got off and commented to the driver with a clueless face, “I got confused, I'm going to the coast”.
I almost jumped onto the steps of the correct bus to where I was heading, unable to avoid the gazes of the passengers questioning me for the last minute drop in. I sat in my numbered seat and defragmented in dissociation, trying to understand what I was doing, I was running away, but from what?
The images of the last transcriptions were engraved in my mind, the last paragraph was repeated over and over again making me shake my head from time to time trying to get them away from my thoughts. The road was dark and I lost track of time, the digital clock within sight of the passengers jingling since we left, reading 10:40.
“San Luis Station!” - I heard the guard's shout in low volume.
I staggered to my feet, hurried to get off and with the same impulse I entered the dirt roads.
I zig-zagged through the dark, cold and silent beach town. The moonless night and the smell of the sea calmed me.
When I turned the corner to the gabled beach house of my family, on the steps of the front door lit by a white light, was her. Sitting, waiting for me. I stopped dead in my tracks and a chilling vertigo ran down my torso to my throat. We looked at each other for a short two seconds, until she stopped and started walking in sliding steps towards me, smiling and playing with her hands, crossing and uncrossing her arms. The growing sound of the wind through the trees covered us.
“Darling, how are you? How nice is the summer house, I don't think we ever came here, did we? Is it the one your grandmother left you?”
I felt the adrenaline rushing through my bloodstream, how could such a familiar attitude from such a familiar person transmit such panic to me? I had to answer something.
“Yes, this is it. I came to clear my head for a while, they gave me a few days at work and I wanted to take advantage of it.” I tried to excuse myself with failed dissimulation, since I stuttered in the middle of the words.
“Yes, I know! We arranged it with them, so you can be more relaxed and as a gesture for taking care of the file. Ah! and another thing. I think someone stole your cell phone at the bus station.” She looked at me with a smart-ass smile.
“Anyway, don't worry, they already found it on a bus on the way to “Treinta y tres”. You can get it back later.”
At this point I opened my mouth to ask for explanations, but as terrified as I was I only mumbled a “thank you”.
All this dialogue let us half a body length away, Valeria looked at me now a little more serious and stood at my side. She took my arm petrified and I could feel how a strong smell of neutral soap invaded me, as if she had rubbed herself in it too much.
“Shall we go inside? it's getting cold,” She said, finishing the sentence with a sweet gesture of pleading.
“Emm, shure.” I said.
My trembling hands managed to hit the lock on the 3rd attempt, we entered, turned on the lights and from his backpack she took out a red wine. Our favorite.
“Bring me some glasses, Mauro”. - She said to me as she sat down on the armchair against the window overlooking the gentle hills outside.
She poured wine until he almost filled the ex-cottage cheese glass, looked at me and in a toast gesture said.
“To... Dr. B?”
I slid a little smile and raised my eyebrows. Then I took half a glass in one sip.
“Well!” - She exclaimed, leaning over and resting the glass on the coffee table, and continued.
"You must be very confused, I understand, I saw it many times, the mind trying to adapt to a new, unsuspected reality and in your case all at once. It is not easy. First, make sure that no one is going to hurt you or anyone you know, second, what you read in that file, as you may have noticed, is not intended for public knowledge. Also to tell you”. I could only cry, for my friend, for the helplessness of the conclusion that she was right. I collapsed on the couch, and watched as the hills swayed in the night.

“After I give you this, and that part of you disappears, will you remember that you are not... really Valeria?
“No, there is already a simulation on pause about Valeria's last week, she won't remember anything about this situation when she wakes up, because the memory is simply overwritten.”

I looked at her evaluating all possible actions and if this decision was the right one, she stretched out her hand and smiled sympathetically. I gave her the old computer and the black 16G flash drive with the file. She inserted it, typed mechanically fast until the screen went black.
“Perfect, That would be all - She took out the flash drive, threw it on the floor and stepped on it violently with the heel of her shoe, put on his backpack and headed for the door.
“Stop,” I said.
“The things that Dr. B wrote... about the underground…
“Yes, they are true, it was the only way to be self-sustainable and to be able to isolate the complex from the rest of the world. Even the most morally flexible scientists would question the work if they knew where the subjects ended up, and what we were doing with their bodies... Introduction
If you think you know anything about MAGA. Trust me, you know nothing. Not even his most devout followers or haters will have considered the following. And for the sake of our democracy and way of life, I hope people read this.
This work may very well help to shift the narrative on Trump in a meaningful and foundational way, but I don't want this work exacerbate any feelings of ill will to MAGA members, for they have been prey to possibly one of the largest con jobs our world has ever seen, especially without the help of this counternarrative.
Snippet From My Thesis On MAGA
As I work on tidying up the master file with the helpful dms I got, allow me to post just the most contentious part of it below, now that it’s able to stand on its own.
MAGA didn’t begin in 2015. I argue it began in 2001 on 9/11, while also harnessing and funneling decades of anti-government resentment till many Americans would openly call for a “wrecking ball” figure to help “drain the swamp.”

A Key Fueling Factor To American Outrage- Inflation
Many elements contributed to growing American anger that would later contribute to MAGA, this is a snippet from the larger work.
Rising Cost of Living
o In 1950, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 24.1. By 2000, it had risen to 168 (a 597% increase), and by 2023, it had reached 304.7, a 1163% increase from 1950.
o Housing prices saw a drastic rise overtime, with the median home price increasing from $7,354 in 1950 to $388,700 in 2023, a staggering 5185% increase.
o While rising rent costs can contribute to overall inflation and cost of living, even the left has largely failed to address how exponentially increasing real estate prices impact the cost of living. This omission has made many other conspiracy theories seem more plausible in its wake.
o If we don’t find real solutions for real estate that also aren’t extreme, then society will feel more and more pressure to accept “unreasonable solutions” like Trump, even though he’s the last person on earth who could solve it, considering his business acumen and history.
MAGA Dynamics and Blind Devotion
In 2016, it wasn't just the left calling the MAGA movement a cult. Trump famously said, "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters." Even the left failed to grasp the gravity of this statement. As someone who nearly died in a deadly cult and based on my research, I don't know of a single cult where the founder could openly commit murder without losing members. Trump didn't just believe he'd created one of the largest cults ever; he believed he'd created the most fanatical. Let's hope his followers prove him wrong by showing a willingness to criticize him, regardless of their vote.

The MAGA Question
Instead of challenging MAGA supporters on fallacious beliefs, ask them this question to see if they’re at least able to see a world where Trump isn’t a biblical King: "If Trump admitted he was behind 9/11 and used resulting insurance money and donations from hostile governments to create false “grass root” campaigns. And did it all in a way to make it seem like others committed his own atrocities. And that he intended to destroy America in every way if he got elected, would you still vote for him?"

Yet even then, getting through to a MAGA supporter inevitably refers to 9/11 “research” out there when they realize individual positions are usually fallacious. This quagmire me decide to investigate this tragedy, to see if there was a more plausible counter theory. Honestly, the more I looked the more surprised I became. Here are my findings that are but a snippet of my full thesis on MAGA.

9/11 Conspiracy Theories and MAGA
Conspiracy Theories and Credibility:
o First off, conspiracy theories should involve some effort to verify narratives, rather than just repeating claims across multiple sources that mistake themselves as evidence; like a bunch of people who repeat “bob farted” across multiple websites may see that as evidence, when in fact, it was Sean. Sorry Sean.

Early Origins of MAGA:
o Although some believe MAGA began in 2015, its roots lie as early as the 1980s with Rush Limbaugh and later became "serious" on 9/11.
o 9/11 conspiracy theories claim controlled demolitions were used, but the lack of any cellphone recordings of explosions weakens this theory.

Suspicious Factors:
o The official narrative involving chaotic jet fuel leading to a straight fall seemed questionable.
o The collapse of a third building (WTC 7), which wasn’t directly hit, fueled suspicions.
o Airline stocks were heavily shorted before the attacks, raising concerns about insider trading. Harvey Pitt, Republican SEC Chairman at the time, investigated this and claimed there was nothing amiss, but was criticized for later crimes and forced to resign.
o It’s also suspicious that in Trumps 2000 book “The America We Deserve” that he stated, “I really am convinced we’re in danger of the sort of terrorist attacks that will make the [1993] bombing of the Trade Center look like kids playing with firecrackers. No sensible analyst rejects this possibility, and plenty of them, like me, are not wondering if but when it will happen*.”*
§ Yet democrats would largely miss this point entirely and obsess over his false claim that he called for Bin Laden to be killed, when he had not. Somehow conspiracy theorists would find this ‘cool’ rather than suspicious.

Reports and Simplified Narratives:
o FEMA's 2002 report and NIST's 2005 report provided technical explanations of the tower collapses.
o However, the Port Authority Chairman stuck to the oversimplified narrative that "jet fuel melted steel beams," even though he knew this was a half-truth, as detailed in the next section, fueling anti-government conspiracies. The question is why.

Potential Impact:
o 9/11 conspiracy theories sowed distrust in the government, which may have been one of the attackers' objectives. Anyone that heavily profited from this tragedy, and helped further those objects, should be questioned.
o The ‘Loose Change’ “documentary” pointed out suspicious parts of the story, but failed to give any clear claims as to who was purportedly behind it. It also failed to note the Twin Towers titanic design flaw that could result in a straight fall. Even the 2015 version of this film fails to mention nearly all of the known facts in this report.
o The Director of that film later states:
“I DON’T THINK WE’D HAVE PRESIDENT TRUMP IF IT WEREN’T FOR 9/11”
“9/11 created a culture of fear, of xenophobia, this sense of entitlement and everything we’ve seen. Warrantless wire-tapping, Guantanamo Bay, everything that’s happened led us to this point, we wouldn’t be here without 9/11. They want to kick out all the Mexicans and Muslims because of this culture of fear and bigotry and xenophobia that directly led to the election of fucking Donald Trump. [laughing] That’s our world now! We had Reagan before, and Governor Schwarzenegger. But President Donald Trump? It’s just weird. Everything is just weird.”

o While the director was in the right to ask questions, he failed to ask the most obvious ones.
o However, his lead “researcher,” Jason Bermas, would turn out to be a full blown MAGA wingnut.

The Twin Towers and Larry Silverstein
Architectural Pitfalls of the Twin Towers:
· The Twin Towers had unique architectural flaws due to the excessive heavy load on their exoskeletons to allow for more floor and leasing space, which greatly contributed to their straight collapse after the 9/11 attacks. This was the first and last skyscraper made in this way.
· For anyone who said that “any other building would have fallen sideways,” you were right, though perhaps not entirely how you may have imagined. A "Coke Can" analogy shows how a similar weakened structure can result in a straight fall, contrary to conspiracy theories claiming controlled demolitions. This isn't something I'm asking you to take for granted, or to read from media sources you don’t trust. This is something you can verify on your own, in person, in real time, in reality.
· However Trump, despite being close friends with Silverstein as we’ll cover later, claimed "It wasn’t architectural defects, you know, the World Trade Center was always known as a very, very strong building” per the attached PolitiFact article.

Larry Silverstein, The Leasor Of The Twin Towers:
· Nearly went bankrupt after losing his main tenant Drexel Burnham in 1980 after he built tower 7 with him in mind.
· I don't know how many of us understand the level of desperation a situation like this can cause in someone and how many potential crimes it can easily push them towards.
· He is known for then saying, “…looking up at the twin towers and thinking, my building is huge, but it is made diminutive by the twin towers. So I said to myself, wouldn't it be incredible someday to own those?" That's not the statement of a sane person who nearly went bankrupt, and if anything, hints towards jealousy.
· He managed to secure Salomon Brothers two years later, which later paid $300 million in securities fraud penalties casting suspicion over the entities who saved Silverstein, in addition to their overall plans for the future.
· How he would become able to outbid everyone else in 2001, for the right to lease the twin towers, would become a mystery we will untangle later.

Trump and Real Estate Connections
Historical Context and Redevelopment Plans:
· A redevelopment plan commenced in the 1990s by Gov. Pataki and Mayor Giuliani, spurred a commercial revival in downtown Manhattan, making the World Trade Center prime property. Pataki would go on to criticize trump, while the other would prove to be one of this wildest, if not craziest, supporters to truly fanatical degrees.

· Tom Leppert was the CEO of Turner construction which right wing conspiracy theorists claimed helped ensure the towers would fall straight down. He also became part of Trumps transition team. While there’s no evidence of explosives being used, tampering with the exoskeleton and weaking the relatively thin central column ahead of time are theoretically plausible.

The bidding for the World Trade Center lease involved only a few major real estate firms as allowed by the Port Authority Chairman. Below are the allowed bidders and their estimated worth at the time included:

· Donald J. Trump’s Organization:
o Worth around $1.5 billion in 1996 after multiple bankruptcies. Confirmed only by Forbes magazine in 2005.
· Tishman Speyer:
o Valued at approximately $1.8 billion in 2000, would soon face ‘tenant issues’ with many scrupulous legal claims against them.
· Gale & Wentworth:
o Worth a few million.
· Mortimer Zuckerman’s Boston Properties:
o Mortimer Zuckerman alone was worth around $2 billion.
· The Rouse Company:
o Mainly a shopping mall operator.
· Brookfield Properties:
o A Canadian firm valued at over $20 billion in 2000.
· Vornado Realty Trust:
o Worth an estimated $2-3 billion. Had the highest bid, but was unexpectedly outed by the Port Authority Chairman, paving the way for Silverstein’s win. CEO of Vornado Trust, Steven Roth would later do many deals with Trump in 2005 and beyond.
· Larry Silverstein:
o As mentioned, was nearly bankrupt in the 1980s, and was mysteriously awarded the right to lease the World Trade Center contract at $3.2 billion, twice the original asking price of 1.2 Billion. It would still be owned by the Port authority of NY and NJ, he would just own the rights to lease it.
o Port Authority Chairman, Lewis Eisenberg, made this unexplained decision, who also later became Trumps lead fundraiser in 2015.
o After putting down only $125 million, as per the contract, Silverstein would be getting back $100 million just 6 weeks after his bid and with an uncommon terrorist insurance addition. His exaggerated bid and insurance contract would also greatly inflate the amount of money he could get from an insurance claim. If the winning bid was 1.5 billion, the insurance payout would also have been much less.
o In real estate, its quite rare for a prudent investor to bid twice the asking price, as demonstrated by the other companies that backed out, of which I find no connections to Trump.
o If anyone had known about 9/11 ahead of time, like Trump claims he did, it would become drastically easier to outbid all competitors, knowing that for pennies on the dollar, you would be getting much more back.

Giuliani’s Gangster Acts
Arguably, if the above points are what they objectively appear to be, that would be a bad thing. You’d think that would be enough. However, Guliani would say “hold my beer’ to those sentiments.

1. Outdated Equipment for First Responders:
· Due to Giuliani’s inadequate leadership, first responders used old equipment that failed to warn them to evacuate the towers. Which contributed to their deaths while they searched for survivors.

2. Obstructed Recovery Efforts:
· Giuliani delayed proper search and rescue operations for days, possibly costing lives of citizens and first responders who didn’t know they needed to leave.
· 20 Years later he would claim that some of Bidens actions were so reckless that… “It would be as if I got down to ground zero and said take out the firefighters, all you civilians see if you can get yourselves out.” Self report?

3. Twin Towers Fund and Privatization:
· Giuliani privatized the Twin Towers relief funds, making them unauditable.

4. Survivors Threaten To SUE Guliani For Relief Funds
· Even after privatizing the twin towers fund, Giuliani would make it incredibly difficult for the victims to receive their fair share. Requiring many of them to spend unnecessary money on advisors and consultants.
· Even with their legal pressure, he only agreed to “give the remaining 100 million to victims,” out of 170 million, if he could first put the money into the bank account of a charity in which he controlled.
· From the attached article: “But Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters, said that he remained adamantly opposed to any transfer of funds to Mr. Giuliani's charity.

5. Attempted Election Cancellation in 2001:
· Giuliani tried to cancel the 2001 election to stay mayor longer. He even considered removing term limits with Governor Pataki’s support. Similar to how Trump has “joked” about increasing his own term limits.

6. Motive
· In 2000, Guliani unfortunately got prostate cancer. We have to be willing to ask if this was a motive for his corrupt acts.

Silverstein’s Unscrupulous Greed
1. Initial Settlement Demands and Profit Claims:
· Despite only having been out for $25 million, Silverstein initially sought nearly $8 BILLION in insurance settlements and argued for "loss of revenue from those buildings," which is quite an uncompassionate claim considering how many lost their lives. Talk about a prime example of the working and lower classes making sacrifices while rich elites complain they didn’t profit enough from the same tragedy.
2. Rebuilding Contributions and Insurance Payout:
· Despite the fact that he only owned the leasing rights to the twin towers, ‘Silverstein Properties’ received up to $4 billion from insurance payouts, instead of the Port Authority, which would be customary as the owner.
· While it's assumed that most of that money went to rebuilding, this isn't actually known or proven. It would be different if he had a separate insurance policy that was not connected to the rebuilding of the towers, with different monies going to the Port Authority to rebuild. This was not the case.

Silverstein’s Controversial Alignment with Trump
Larry Silverstein's connections and public persona have often been scrutinized. This scrutiny became particularly relevant in 2015 when he publicly displayed his support for Donald Trump:

• Long-standing Relationship: Silverstein revealed a 30-year-long acquaintance with Trump, emphasizing the depth of their connection. This means his relationship started in 1985, roughly two years after gaining a powerful criminal organization as a tenant in his tower 7, that saved him from bankruptcy, and 6 years before Trumps first, of many, bankruptcies. This also means they knew each other before 9/11.

The Man Who Boasted
When most people witness a tragedy, especially of this size, it takes time for their brains to comprehend what happened, it takes even more time to process it. Thus, anyone who was able to brag about their own assets hours after this tragedy on a radio show, is at least worthy of Investigation, especially if this very event helped reshape a misinformation landscape in which he would thrive as its King.

· Insensitive Boasts About Building Height:
o Trump also boasted that with the fall of the Twin Towers, his building became the tallest in Manhattan—an inaccurate and insensitive claim given the context.

o Shortly after 9/11, Donald Trump claimed he saw the second plane hit the towers from his Manhattan apartment. These actions paint Trump as one of the more suspicious figures post-9/11, who may have used the tragedy for personal and political gain. His connections with figures like Larry Silverstein and Lewis Eisenberg, the Port Authority chairman, hint at deep financial interests potentially influenced by the 9/11 aftermath. Meanwhile, survivors and first responders faced challenges in securing support, highlighting the disparities between their experiences and the political maneuvers at play. Again morbidly juxtaposing the struggles of the poor and working class versus elite swamp members such as Trump and his ilk.

While being, arguably, one of the more suspicious Americans of potentially “being an insider," Trump would go on to cast doubt everywhere else with his new holier than thou rhetoric and hints and claims that “it was an inside job” for the next 15 years.

The Deepfake Dilemma
Now in a world where Trump's followers already discount reality, the emergence of AI-generated deepfakes threatens to further distort the truth. This technology could transform legal standards of evidence, making it easy to dismiss genuine evidence against the right as fabricated, while baseless accusations against the left might be accepted as the long-awaited proof.

The Potential Escalation of MAGA Actions
Given the willingness of MAGA supporters to storm the Capitol on January 6th, bolstered by Trump's incendiary rhetoric, the potential for escalation is alarming. The advent of fabricated images and videos could present unprecedented national security threats.

The Need for a Critical Approach
Supporters of Trump should critically evaluate why he did not pardon the January 6th insurrectionists during his term, despite using them as political leverage now. This pattern of using allies until they are no longer useful is evident throughout his political and personal dealings.
What better example could there possibly be as to what trump truly thinks of his supporters, how sacrificial he sees them as part of his endless narratives, then his refusal and failure to pardon January 6th insurrectionists while still in office?
Of course, anyone “just on the grass” or outside the building should only get a day in jail at most, however people that barged inside the capital should naturally get much more.
And while trump refused to pardon those people before, he now calls them “hostages” and is using them as political bait to a truly wild degree. It's very likely he will make good on this promise to further embolden the narrative that “Democrats are trying to take you down and only I can save you.”
His supporters need to seriously ask, “Why didn’t he pardon us before?”
Also, remember when he claimed he would pay legal fees for supporters that were violent at his rallies, but then seemed to falter and change his mind. Much like how Amber Heard donated her money, “by pledging it.”

If you think you know anything about MAGA. Trust me, you know nothing. Not even his most devout followers or haters will have considered the following. And for the sake of our democracy and way of life, I hope people read this.
This work may very well help to shift the narrative on Trump in a meaningful and foundational way, but I don't want this work exacerbate any feelings of ill will to MAGA members, for they have been prey to possibly one of the largest con jobs our world has ever seen, especially without the help of this counternarrative.

As I work on tidying up the master file with the helpful dms I got, allow me to post just the most contentious part of it below, now that it’s able to stand on its own.
MAGA didn’t begin in 2015. I argue it began in 2001 on 9/11, while also harnessing and funneling decades of anti-government resentment till many Americans would openly call for a “wrecking ball” figure to help “drain the swamp.”

A Key Fueling Factor To American Outrage- Inflation
Many elements contributed to growing American anger that would later contribute to MAGA, this is a snippet from the larger work.
Rising Cost of Living
o In 1950, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 24.1. By 2000, it had risen to 168 (a 597% increase), and by 2023, it had reached 304.7, a 1163% increase from 1950.
o Housing prices saw a drastic rise overtime, with the median home price increasing from $7,354 in 1950 to $388,700 in 2023, a staggering 5185% increase.
o While rising rent costs can contribute to overall inflation and cost of living, even the left has largely failed to address how exponentially increasing real estate prices impact the cost of living. This omission has made many other conspiracy theories seem more plausible in its wake.
o If we don’t find real solutions for real estate that also aren’t extreme, then society will feel more and more pressure to accept “unreasonable solutions” like Trump, even though he’s the last person on earth who could solve it, considering his business acumen and history.
MAGA Dynamics and Blind Devotion
In 2016, it wasn't just the left calling the MAGA movement a cult. Trump famously said, "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters." Even the left failed to grasp the gravity of this statement. As someone who nearly died in a deadly cult and based on my research, I don't know of a single cult where the founder could openly commit murder without losing members. Trump didn't just believe he'd created one of the largest cults ever; he believed he'd created the most fanatical. Let's hope his followers prove him wrong by showing a willingness to criticize him, regardless of their vote.

The MAGA Question
Instead of challenging MAGA supporters on fallacious beliefs, ask them this question to see if they’re at least able to see a world where Trump isn’t a biblical King: "If Trump admitted he was behind 9/11 and used resulting insurance money and donations from hostile governments to create false “grass root” campaigns. And did it all in a way to make it seem like others committed his own atrocities. And that he intended to destroy America in every way if he got elected, would you still vote for him?"

Yet even then, getting through to a MAGA supporter inevitably refers to 9/11 “research” out there when they realize individual positions are usually fallacious. This quagmire me decide to investigate this tragedy, to see if there was a more plausible counter theory. Honestly, the more I looked the more surprised I became. Here are my findings that are but a snippet of my full thesis on MAGA.

9/11 Conspiracy Theories and MAGA
Conspiracy Theories and Credibility:
o First off, conspiracy theories should involve some effort to verify narratives, rather than just repeating claims across multiple sources that mistake themselves as evidence; like a bunch of people who repeat “bob farted” across multiple websites may see that as evidence, when in fact, it was Sean. Sorry Sean.

Early Origins of MAGA:
o Although some believe MAGA began in 2015, its roots lie as early as the 1980s with Rush Limbaugh and later became "serious" on 9/11.
o 9/11 conspiracy theories claim controlled demolitions were used, but the lack of any cellphone recordings of explosions weakens this theory.

Suspicious Factors:
o The official narrative involving chaotic jet fuel leading to a straight fall seemed questionable.
o The collapse of a third building (WTC 7), which wasn’t directly hit, fueled suspicions.
o Airline stocks were heavily shorted before the attacks, raising concerns about insider trading. Harvey Pitt, Republican SEC Chairman at the time, investigated this and claimed there was nothing amiss, but was criticized for later crimes and forced to resign.
o It’s also suspicious that in Trumps 2000 book “The America We Deserve” that he stated, “I really am convinced we’re in danger of the sort of terrorist attacks that will make the [1993] bombing of the Trade Center look like kids playing with firecrackers. No sensible analyst rejects this possibility, and plenty of them, like me, are not wondering if but when it will happen*.”*
§ Yet democrats would largely miss this point entirely and obsess over his false claim that he called for Bin Laden to be killed, when he had not. Somehow conspiracy theorists would find this ‘cool’ rather than suspicious.

Reports and Simplified Narratives:
o FEMA's 2002 report and NIST's 2005 report provided technical explanations of the tower collapses.
o However, the Port Authority Chairman stuck to the oversimplified narrative that "jet fuel melted steel beams," even though he knew this was a half-truth, as detailed in the next section, fueling anti-government conspiracies. The question is why.

Potential Impact:
o 9/11 conspiracy theories sowed distrust in the government, which may have been one of the attackers' objectives. Anyone that heavily profited from this tragedy, and helped further those objects, should be questioned.
o The ‘Loose Change’ “documentary” pointed out suspicious parts of the story, but failed to give any clear claims as to who was purportedly behind it. It also failed to note the Twin Towers titanic design flaw that could result in a straight fall. Even the 2015 version of this film fails to mention nearly all of the known facts in this report.
o The Director of that film later states:
“I DON’T THINK WE’D HAVE PRESIDENT TRUMP IF IT WEREN’T FOR 9/11”
“9/11 created a culture of fear, of xenophobia, this sense of entitlement and everything we’ve seen. Warrantless wire-tapping, Guantanamo Bay, everything that’s happened led us to this point, we wouldn’t be here without 9/11. They want to kick out all the Mexicans and Muslims because of this culture of fear and bigotry and xenophobia that directly led to the election of fucking Donald Trump. [laughing] That’s our world now! We had Reagan before, and Governor Schwarzenegger. But President Donald Trump? It’s just weird. Everything is just weird.”

Architectural Pitfalls of the Twin Towers:
· The Twin Towers had unique architectural flaws due to the excessive heavy load on their exoskeletons to allow for more floor and leasing space, which greatly contributed to their straight collapse after the 9/11 attacks. This was the first and last skyscraper made in this way.
· For anyone who said that “any other building would have fallen sideways,” you were right, though perhaps not entirely how you may have imagined. A "Coke Can" analogy shows how a similar weakened structure can result in a straight fall, contrary to conspiracy theories claiming controlled demolitions. This isn't something I'm asking you to take for granted, or to read from media sources you don’t trust. This is something you can verify on your own, in person, in real time, in reality.
· However Trump, despite being close friends with Silverstein as we’ll cover later, claimed "It wasn’t architectural defects, you know, the World Trade Center was always known as a very, very strong building” per the attached PolitiFact article.

Larry Silverstein, The Leasor Of The Twin Towers:
· Nearly went bankrupt after losing his main tenant Drexel Burnham in 1980 after he built tower 7 with him in mind.
· I don't know how many of us understand the level of desperation a situation like this can cause in someone and how many potential crimes it can easily push them towards.
· He is known for then saying, “…looking up at the twin towers and thinking, my building is huge, but it is made diminutive by the twin towers. So I said to myself, wouldn't it be incredible someday to own those?" That's not the statement of a sane person who nearly went bankrupt, and if anything, hints towards jealousy.
· He managed to secure Salomon Brothers two years later, which later paid $300 million in securities fraud penalties casting suspicion over the entities who saved Silverstein, in addition to their overall plans for the future.
· How he would become able to outbid everyone else in 2001, for the right to lease the twin towers, would become a mystery we will untangle later.

Historical Context and Redevelopment Plans:
· A redevelopment plan commenced in the 1990s by Gov. Pataki and Mayor Giuliani, spurred a commercial revival in downtown Manhattan, making the World Trade Center prime property. Pataki would go on to criticize trump, while the other would prove to be one of this wildest, if not craziest, supporters to truly fanatical degrees.

The bidding for the World Trade Center lease involved only a few major real estate firms as allowed by the Port Authority Chairman. Below are the allowed bidders and their estimated worth at the time included:

· Donald J. Trump’s Organization:
o Worth around $1.5 billion in 1996 after multiple bankruptcies. Confirmed only by Forbes magazine in 2005.
· Tishman Speyer:
o Valued at approximately $1.8 billion in 2000, would soon face ‘tenant issues’ with many scrupulous legal claims against them.
· Gale & Wentworth:
o Worth a few million.
· Mortimer Zuckerman’s Boston Properties:
o Mortimer Zuckerman alone was worth around $2 billion.
· The Rouse Company:
o Mainly a shopping mall operator.
· Brookfield Properties:
o A Canadian firm valued at over $20 billion in 2000.
· Vornado Realty Trust:
o Worth an estimated $2-3 billion. Had the highest bid, but was unexpectedly outed by the Port Authority Chairman, paving the way for Silverstein’s win. CEO of Vornado Trust, Steven Roth would later do many deals with Trump in 2005 and beyond.
· Larry Silverstein:
o As mentioned, was nearly bankrupt in the 1980s, and was mysteriously awarded the right to lease the World Trade Center contract at $3.2 billion, twice the original asking price of 1.2 Billion. It would still be owned by the Port authority of NY and NJ, he would just own the rights to lease it.
o Port Authority Chairman, Lewis Eisenberg, made this unexplained decision, who also later became Trumps lead fundraiser in 2015.
o After putting down only $125 million, as per the contract, Silverstein would be getting back $100 million just 6 weeks after his bid and with an uncommon terrorist insurance addition. His exaggerated bid and insurance contract would also greatly inflate the amount of money he could get from an insurance claim. If the winning bid was 1.5 billion, the insurance payout would also have been much less.
o In real estate, its quite rare for a prudent investor to bid twice the asking price, as demonstrated by the other companies that backed out, of which I find no connections to Trump.
o If anyone had known about 9/11 ahead of time, like Trump claims he did, it would become drastically easier to outbid all competitors, knowing that for pennies on the dollar, you would be getting much more back.

Giuliani’s Gangster Acts
Arguably, if the above points are what they objectively appear to be, that would be a bad thing. You’d think that would be enough. However, Guliani would say “hold my beer’ to those sentiments.

1. Outdated Equipment for First Responders:
· Due to Giuliani’s inadequate leadership, first responders used old equipment that failed to warn them to evacuate the towers. Which contributed to their deaths while they searched for survivors.

· Giuliani delayed proper search and rescue operations for days, possibly costing lives of citizens and first responders who didn’t know they needed to leave.

· Giuliani privatized the Twin Towers relief funds, making them unauditable.

4. Survivors Threaten To SUE Guliani For Relief Funds
· Even after privatizing the twin towers fund, Giuliani would make it incredibly difficult for the victims to receive their fair share. Requiring many of them to spend unnecessary money on advisors and consultants.
· Even with their legal pressure, he only agreed to “give the remaining 100 million to victims,” out of 170 million, if he could first put the money into the bank account of a charity in which he controlled.

5. Attempted Election Cancellation in 2001:
· Giuliani tried to cancel the 2001 election to stay mayor longer. He even considered removing term limits with Governor Pataki’s support. Similar to how Trump has “joked” about increasing his own term limits.

· In 2000, Guliani unfortunately got prostate cancer. We have to be willing to ask if this was a motive for his corrupt acts.

Silverstein’s Unscrupulous Greed
1. Initial Settlement Demands and Profit Claims:
· Despite only having been out for $25 million, Silverstein initially sought nearly $8 BILLION in insurance settlements and argued for "loss of revenue from those buildings," which is quite an uncompassionate claim considering how many lost their lives. Talk about a prime example of the working and lower classes making sacrifices while rich elites complain they didn’t profit enough from the same tragedy.
2. Rebuilding Contributions and Insurance Payout:
· Despite the fact that he only owned the leasing rights to the twin towers, ‘Silverstein Properties’ received up to $4 billion from insurance payouts, instead of the Port Authority, which would be customary as the owner.
· While it's assumed that most of that money went to rebuilding, this isn't actually known or proven. It would be different if he had a separate insurance policy that was not connected to the rebuilding of the towers, with different monies going to the Port Authority to rebuild. This was not the case.

Thus, anyone who was able to brag about their own assets hours after this tragedy on a radio show, is at least worthy of Investigation, especially if this very event helped reshape a misinformation landscape in which he would thrive as its King.

Legacy of Suspicion:
These actions paint Trump as one of the more suspicious figures post-9/11, who may have used the tragedy for personal and political gain. His connections with figures like Larry Silverstein and Lewis Eisenberg, the Port Authority chairman, hint at deep financial interests potentially influenced by the 9/11 aftermath. Meanwhile, survivors and first responders faced challenges in securing support, highlighting the disparities between their experiences and the political maneuvers at play. Again morbidly juxtaposing the struggles of the poor and working class versus elite swamp members such as Trump and his ilk.

While being, arguably, one of the more suspicious Americans of potentially “being an insider," Trump would go on to cast doubt everywhere else with his new holier than thou rhetoric and hints and claims that “it was an inside job” for the next 15 years.

The Need for a Critical Approach
Supporters of Trump should critically evaluate why he did not pardon the January 6th insurrectionists during his term, despite using them as political leverage now. This pattern of using allies until they are no longer useful is evident throughout his political and personal dealings.
What better example could there possibly be as to what trump truly thinks of his supporters, how sacrificial he sees them as part of his endless narratives, then his refusal and failure to pardon January 6th insurrectionists while still in office?
Of course, anyone “just on the grass” or outside the building should only get a day in jail at most, however people that barged inside the capital should naturally get much more.
And while trump refused to pardon those people before, he now calls them “hostages” and is using them as political bait to a truly wild degree. It's very likely he will make good on this promise to further embolden the narrative that “Democrats are trying to take you down and only I can save you.”
His supporters need to seriously ask, “Why didn’t he pardon us before?”
Also, remember when he claimed he would pay legal fees for supporters that were violent at his rallies, but then seemed to falter and change his mind. Much like how Amber Heard donated her money, “by pledging it.”

If you think you know anything about MAGA. Trust me, you know nothing. Not even his most devout followers or haters will have considered the following. And for the sake of our democracy and way of life, I hope people read this.
This work may very well help to shift the narrative on Trump in a meaningful and foundational way, but I don't want this work exacerbate any feelings of ill will to MAGA members, for they have been prey to possibly one of the largest con jobs our world has ever seen, especially without the help of this counternarrative.

As I work on tidying up the master file with the helpful dms I got, allow me to post just the most contentious part of it below, now that it’s able to stand on its own.
MAGA didn’t begin in 2015. I argue it began in 2001 on 9/11, while also harnessing and funneling decades of anti-government resentment till many Americans would openly call for a “wrecking ball” figure to help “drain the swamp.”

A Key Fueling Factor To American Outrage- Inflation
Many elements contributed to growing American anger that would later contribute to MAGA, this is a snippet from the larger work.
Rising Cost of Living
o In 1950, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 24.1. By 2000, it had risen to 168 (a 597% increase), and by 2023, it had reached 304.7, a 1163% increase from 1950.
o Housing prices saw a drastic rise overtime, with the median home price increasing from $7,354 in 1950 to $388,700 in 2023, a staggering 5185% increase.
o While rising rent costs can contribute to overall inflation and cost of living, even the left has largely failed to address how exponentially increasing real estate prices impact the cost of living. This omission has made many other conspiracy theories seem more plausible in its wake.
o If we don’t find real solutions for real estate that also aren’t extreme, then society will feel more and more pressure to accept “unreasonable solutions” like Trump, even though he’s the last person on earth who could solve it, considering his business acumen and history.
MAGA Dynamics and Blind Devotion
In 2016, it wasn't just the left calling the MAGA movement a cult. Trump famously said, "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters." Even the left failed to grasp the gravity of this statement. As someone who nearly died in a deadly cult and based on my research, I don't know of a single cult where the founder could openly commit murder without losing members. Trump didn't just believe he'd created one of the largest cults ever; he believed he'd created the most fanatical. Let's hope his followers prove him wrong by showing a willingness to criticize him, regardless of their vote.

The MAGA Question
Instead of challenging MAGA supporters on fallacious beliefs, ask them this question to see if they’re at least able to see a world where Trump isn’t a biblical King: "If Trump admitted he was behind 9/11 and used resulting insurance money and donations from hostile governments to create false “grass root” campaigns. And did it all in a way to make it seem like others committed his own atrocities. And that he intended to destroy America in every way if he got elected, would you still vote for him?"

Yet even then, getting through to a MAGA supporter inevitably refers to 9/11 “research” out there when they realize individual positions are usually fallacious. This quagmire me decide to investigate this tragedy, to see if there was a more plausible counter theory. Honestly, the more I looked the more surprised I became. Here are my findings that are but a snippet of my full thesis on MAGA.

9/11 Conspiracy Theories and MAGA
Conspiracy Theories and Credibility:
o First off, conspiracy theories should involve some effort to verify narratives, rather than just repeating claims across multiple sources that mistake themselves as evidence; like a bunch of people who repeat “bob farted” across multiple websites may see that as evidence, when in fact, it was Sean. Sorry Sean.

Early Origins of MAGA:
o Although some believe MAGA began in 2015, its roots lie as early as the 1980s with Rush Limbaugh and later became "serious" on 9/11.
o 9/11 conspiracy theories claim controlled demolitions were used, but the lack of any cellphone recordings of explosions weakens this theory.

Suspicious Factors:
o The official narrative involving chaotic jet fuel leading to a straight fall seemed questionable.
o The collapse of a third building (WTC 7), which wasn’t directly hit, fueled suspicions.
o Airline stocks were heavily shorted before the attacks, raising concerns about insider trading. Harvey Pitt, Republican SEC Chairman at the time, investigated this and claimed there was nothing amiss, but was criticized for later crimes and forced to resign.
o It’s also suspicious that in Trumps 2000 book “The America We Deserve” that he stated, “I really am convinced we’re in danger of the sort of terrorist attacks that will make the [1993] bombing of the Trade Center look like kids playing with firecrackers. No sensible analyst rejects this possibility, and plenty of them, like me, are not wondering if but when it will happen*.”*
§ Yet democrats would largely miss this point entirely and obsess over his false claim that he called for Bin Laden to be killed, when he had not. Somehow conspiracy theorists would find this ‘cool’ rather than suspicious.

Reports and Simplified Narratives:
o FEMA's 2002 report and NIST's 2005 report provided technical explanations of the tower collapses.
o However, the Port Authority Chairman stuck to the oversimplified narrative that "jet fuel melted steel beams," even though he knew this was a half-truth, as detailed in the next section, fueling anti-government conspiracies. The question is why.

Potential Impact:
o 9/11 conspiracy theories sowed distrust in the government, which may have been one of the attackers' objectives. Anyone that heavily profited from this tragedy, and helped further those objects, should be questioned.
o The ‘Loose Change’ “documentary” pointed out suspicious parts of the story, but failed to give any clear claims as to who was purportedly behind it. It also failed to note the Twin Towers titanic design flaw that could result in a straight fall. Even the 2015 version of this film fails to mention nearly all of the known facts in this report.
o The Director of that film later states:
“I DON’T THINK WE’D HAVE PRESIDENT TRUMP IF IT WEREN’T FOR 9/11”
“9/11 created a culture of fear, of xenophobia, this sense of entitlement and everything we’ve seen. Warrantless wire-tapping, Guantanamo Bay, everything that’s happened led us to this point, we wouldn’t be here without 9/11. They want to kick out all the Mexicans and Muslims because of this culture of fear and bigotry and xenophobia that directly led to the election of fucking Donald Trump. [laughing] That’s our world now! We had Reagan before, and Governor Schwarzenegger. But President Donald Trump? It’s just weird. Everything is just weird.”

Architectural Pitfalls of the Twin Towers:
· The Twin Towers had unique architectural flaws due to the excessive heavy load on their exoskeletons to allow for more floor and leasing space, which greatly contributed to their straight collapse after the 9/11 attacks. This was the first and last skyscraper made in this way.
· For anyone who said that “any other building would have fallen sideways,” you were right, though perhaps not entirely how you may have imagined. A "Coke Can" analogy shows how a similar weakened structure can result in a straight fall, contrary to conspiracy theories claiming controlled demolitions. This isn't something I'm asking you to take for granted, or to read from media sources you don’t trust. This is something you can verify on your own, in person, in real time, in reality.
· However Trump, despite being close friends with Silverstein as we’ll cover later, claimed "It wasn’t architectural defects, you know, the World Trade Center was always known as a very, very strong building” per the attached PolitiFact article.

Larry Silverstein, The Leasor Of The Twin Towers:
· Nearly went bankrupt after losing his main tenant Drexel Burnham in 1980 after he built tower 7 with him in mind.
· I don't know how many of us understand the level of desperation a situation like this can cause in someone and how many potential crimes it can easily push them towards.
· He is known for then saying, “…looking up at the twin towers and thinking, my building is huge, but it is made diminutive by the twin towers. So I said to myself, wouldn't it be incredible someday to own those?" That's not the statement of a sane person who nearly went bankrupt, and if anything, hints towards jealousy.
· He managed to secure Salomon Brothers two years later, which later paid $300 million in securities fraud penalties casting suspicion over the entities who saved Silverstein, in addition to their overall plans for the future.
· How he would become able to outbid everyone else in 2001, for the right to lease the twin towers, would become a mystery we will untangle later.

Historical Context and Redevelopment Plans:
· A redevelopment plan commenced in the 1990s by Gov. Pataki and Mayor Giuliani, spurred a commercial revival in downtown Manhattan, making the World Trade Center prime property. Pataki would go on to criticize trump, while the other would prove to be one of this wildest, if not craziest, supporters to truly fanatical degrees.

· Tom Leppert was the CEO of Turner construction which right wing conspiracy theorists claimed helped ensure the towers would fall straight down. He also became part of Trumps transition team. The bidding for the World Trade Center lease involved only a few major real estate firms as allowed by the Port Authority Chairman. Below are the allowed bidders and their estimated worth at the time included:

· Donald J. Trump’s Organization:
o Worth around $1.5 billion in 1996 after multiple bankruptcies. Confirmed only by Forbes magazine in 2005.
· Tishman Speyer:
o Valued at approximately $1.8 billion in 2000, would soon face ‘tenant issues’ with many scrupulous legal claims against them.
· Gale & Wentworth:
o Worth a few million.
· Mortimer Zuckerman’s Boston Properties:
o Mortimer Zuckerman alone was worth around $2 billion.
· The Rouse Company:
o Mainly a shopping mall operator.
· Brookfield Properties:
o A Canadian firm valued at over $20 billion in 2000.
· Vornado Realty Trust:
o Worth an estimated $2-3 billion. Had the highest bid, but was unexpectedly outed by the Port Authority Chairman, paving the way for Silverstein’s win. CEO of Vornado Trust, Steven Roth would later do many deals with Trump in 2005 and beyond.
· Larry Silverstein:
o As mentioned, was nearly bankrupt in the 1980s, and was mysteriously awarded the right to lease the World Trade Center contract at $3.2 billion, twice the original asking price of 1.2 Billion. It would still be owned by the Port authority of NY and NJ, he would just own the rights to lease it.
o Port Authority Chairman, Lewis Eisenberg, made this unexplained decision, who also later became Trumps lead fundraiser in 2015.
o After putting down only $125 million, as per the contract, Silverstein would be getting back $100 million just 6 weeks after his bid and with an uncommon terrorist insurance addition. His exaggerated bid and insurance contract would also greatly inflate the amount of money he could get from an insurance claim. If the winning bid was 1.5 billion, the insurance payout would also have been much less.
o In real estate, its quite rare for a prudent investor to bid twice the asking price, as demonstrated by the other companies that backed out, of which I find no connections to Trump.
o If anyone had known about 9/11 ahead of time, like Trump claims he did, it would become drastically easier to outbid all competitors, knowing that for pennies on the dollar, you would be getting much more back.

Giuliani’s Gangster Acts
Arguably, if the above points are what they objectively appear to be, that would be a bad thing. You’d think that would be enough. However, Guliani would say “hold my beer’ to those sentiments.

1. Outdated Equipment for First Responders:
· Due to Giuliani’s inadequate leadership, first responders used old equipment that failed to warn them to evacuate the towers. Which contributed to their deaths while they searched for survivors.

2. Obstructed Recovery Efforts:
· Giuliani delayed proper search and rescue operations for days, possibly costing lives of citizens and first responders who didn’t know they needed to leave.
· 20 Years later he would claim that some of Bidens actions were so reckless that… “It would be as if I got down to ground zero and said take out the firefighters, all you civilians see if you can get yourselves out.” Self report?

· Giuliani privatized the Twin Towers relief funds, making them unauditable.

4. Survivors Threaten To SUE Guliani For Relief Funds
· Even after privatizing the twin towers fund, Giuliani would make it incredibly difficult for the victims to receive their fair share. Requiring many of them to spend unnecessary money on advisors and consultants.
· Even with their legal pressure, he only agreed to “give the remaining 100 million to victims,” out of 170 million, if he could first put the money into the bank account of a charity in which he controlled.
· From the attached article: “But Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters, said that he remained adamantly opposed to any transfer of funds to Mr. Giuliani's charity.

5. Attempted Election Cancellation in 2001:
· Giuliani tried to cancel the 2001 election to stay mayor longer. He even considered removing term limits with Governor Pataki’s support. Similar to how Trump has “joked” about increasing his own term limits.

· In 2000, Guliani unfortunately got prostate cancer. We have to be willing to ask if this was a motive for his corrupt acts.

Silverstein’s Unscrupulous Greed
1. Initial Settlement Demands and Profit Claims:
· Despite only having been out for $25 million, Silverstein initially sought nearly $8 BILLION in insurance settlements and argued for "loss of revenue from those buildings," which is quite an uncompassionate claim considering how many lost their lives. Talk about a prime example of the working and lower classes making sacrifices while rich elites complain they didn’t profit enough from the same tragedy.
2. Rebuilding Contributions and Insurance Payout:
· Despite the fact that he only owned the leasing rights to the twin towers, ‘Silverstein Properties’ received up to $4 billion from insurance payouts, instead of the Port Authority, which would be customary as the owner.
· While it's assumed that most of that money went to rebuilding, this isn't actually known or proven. It would be different if he had a separate insurance policy that was not connected to the rebuilding of the towers, with different monies going to the Port Authority to rebuild. This was not the case.

The Need for a Critical Approach
Supporters of Trump should critically evaluate why he did not pardon the January 6th insurrectionists during his term, despite using them as political leverage now. This pattern of using allies until they are no longer useful is evident throughout his political and personal dealings.
What better example could there possibly be as to what trump truly thinks of his supporters, how sacrificial he sees them as part of his endless narratives, then his refusal and failure to pardon January 6th insurrectionists while still in office?
Of course, anyone “just on the grass” or outside the building should only get a day in jail at most, however people that barged inside the capital should naturally get much more.
And while trump refused to pardon those people before, he now calls them “hostages” and is using them as political bait to a truly wild degree. It's very likely he will make good on this promise to further embolden the narrative that “Democrats are trying to take you down and only I can save you.”
His supporters need to seriously ask, “Why didn’t he pardon us before?”
Also, remember when he claimed he would pay legal fees for supporters that were violent at his rallies, but then seemed to falter and change his mind. Much like how Amber Heard donated her money, “by pledging it.”

Note, this includes his one-offs and side stories that all take place in MAX continuity, including Fury: My War Gone By, Barracuda, The Tyger, The Cell, The Platoon, Soviet, the entirety of his 60 issue run on Punisher MAX concluding with Valley Forge, Valley Forge, and I assume it will include the upcoming 'Get Fury'. It does not include Jason Aaron's PunisherMAX or other one-off arcs and one-shots by other writers.
So, I think everyone's in agreement that Garth Ennis is basically the seminal Punisher writer. He has had the greatest impact on his modern-day depictions, modern-day understanding in popular culture, his place in the greater Marvel universe, etc. Every writer on the book after him has been constantly compared to Ennis's early 2000s Marvel Knights and MAX work.
However, his specific MAX work, to me, remains the greatest run of crime genre comic books ever. Now I know that compared to cape comics, the crime genre in general is fairly small. Having said that, I think his work on Punisher MAX titles still ranks amongst the best comic book titles in general, at least since the year 2000. I think his work on it underappreciated as people tend to stereotype his use of gore and shock writing in other titles like Preacher, The Boys, and Crossed and sort of note him as one-note. However, his work on The Punisher uses the violence as a means to an end of examining its protagonist and the villains and society in general around him. The addiction to violence, the decay of society, the institutions that press down on society, and the people that control those institutions, gangs, militaries, etc., that is the true heart of the stories that Ennis uses the MAX setting to tell.
Punisher MAX takes place in a continuity where Frank fought three tours in Vietnam. Where he lost his family in the early 70s. Where by the time we are introduced to him, it is 2004 and he's been at this war for 30 years, putting him at his late 50s. The progression of real time is fascinating, because the comic booky sliding scale of time is disposed of. Those American conflicts of Vietnam, CIA black shit in Central America, Russian involvement in Afghanistan, the War on Terror, those are all prescient events that haunt the characters and force their journeys forward. Ennis has a lot of things to say on the intersection of war and criminality. Heck, the first arc in Punisher MAX is directly talking about US Military and CIA involvement in the heroin trade and how they keep that machine running. Fury MAX goes all over the world in the 70s and 80s showcasing the horrible stuff the American government gets up to. Barracuda is an Army Infantryman turned mercenary turned wannabe kingpin.
The other thing is that Ennis doesn't change Frank. He has basically zero arc in the mainline sixty issues. His biggest moments of change are seen in The Tyger and earlier Vietnam-set stories. In the mainline series, he essentially ends the series as he began it. A force of nature who's presence sets off the rest of the characters and creates the tension and action that follows. We follow cops, antagonists, civilians, etc as they are constantly reacting to Castle while watching him get out of shit situation after shit situation. Ennis doesn't have to take Frank on a some hero's journey or have him change, because the beauty of The Punisher is that he is pure. He has no doubt, he never needs to change, he just is and if he's after you, you did something to fucking deserve it. It's wish fulfillment in a sense because even the characters say they don't wanna be with him. In the final arc when noble spec ops troops are sent after him, all they can say while he non-lethally takes them down is "he makes us feel like how we make normal guys feel".
The other thing is, Frank does not discriminate who is the object of his punishment. The final moment of punctuation at the very ending is one of the critical points of the entire series: that these people who operate the lever of power, whos actions send thousands of soldiers to their death over nothing, they are the real targets, they are the real villains. The contrast between gangsters running around on the ground in NYC and the political players who's actions dictate the rise and fall of nations is a huge gulf, but to Frank, they both deserve the same fate.
Even with Frank as a very pure force of nature, and the nature of his opponents, going from serial killers, to mobsters, mercenaries, foreign militaries, spec ops troops, and US generals, Ennis still gives him moments of humanity that cut through his grim facade. The brief moment he can feel like a dad again in Long, Cold Dark. The nightmare sequence in Up is Down where he never stops murdering and his confronted by his dead family. When he saves the little girl in Mother Russia from The Mongolian. His narration in 'Born' also gives him a very unstable edge, even when he's right the whole time and he really was trying to keep his troops alive despite his boogeyman reputation. His rage in 'The Slavers' and the heart-wrenching final pages of that story.
The Tyger and The Cell showcase a Frank at his 1) his most human, and 2) his most vengeful. The Tyger showcases the moment that changed him as a child, leaving an indelible mark and possibly is what caused him to go from a quiet, thoughtful boy that loved poetry to a marine lifer and finally to vigilante. The Cell meanwhile keeps this 'clockwork' concept of Frank not changing and the world around him reacting, but puts in a pressure cooker situation with the final act revelation of why he's in that prison with those people. That is not a force of nature, that is a husband and father getting a moment alone with the progenitors of his grief.
All of this adds up to a story of both institutions and world conflicts condensing everything horrible about them into a single person that strikes back. And I absolutely love it. Ennis also plays with the format to emphasize this in the final arc with all the prose pages that act as a mirror to 'Born'. Ennis is a master of the craft. Reading from the beginning to the most recent stories, you are seeing the totality of a man that became a force of nature, and you understand the why and the how, and the horrors of the world, and you still may not be on his side, but at least you understand how in a world this shitty, maybe this guy is the best you can hope for. And this still doesn't get into all the great bad guys present in these stories, from Barracuda, to Zakharov, to Rawlins, to Cavella etc etc. Ennis utilizes the "Bad guys don't survive Frank twice" rule to great effect, and this carries through the entire story. Even his brief appearances in other tales like Fury or the Barracuda mini still put in enough details to continue fleshing Frank's character out.
I see Ennis's Punisher as a separate thing from Aaron's rendition and other MAX authors... they're motivations are different, Aaron's is more comic-booky, and I think it actually lessens Frank's character and depiction if you look at Aaron's story as a continuation of Ennis's tale.

I'm going to do something a bit different and take a close look at two major works from the DC Universe: Darwyn Cooke's The New Frontier, and James Robinson and Paul Smith's The Golden Age. If you're playing along at home, the texts I'm using are The Absolute New Frontier from 2006 and The Golden Age trade paperback from 1995.
First a bit of personal context: I didn't enjoy The New Frontier when it first came out, serialized in six quite expensive installments. I loved Cooke's art, I loved the use of some of the more obscure DC war characters, and I loved the characterization of the Martian Manhunter, but the narrative didn't work for me when read in small monthly doses back in 2004. I had read all of the full-length work Cooke had done up until 2004, and none of it had disappointed me at all. But The New Frontier seemed to read more like a tour through the 1950s and 1960s than an actual story. It wasn't until the final issue that I really understood what Cooke was leading up to, but then it was over, and I didn't have the time or the inclination to dig out the back issues and read the whole thing in one sitting. Even when I got the two-volume trade paperback collection a couple of years ago (in an eBay lot of trade paperbacks I bought off of none other than comic book scholar George Khoury), I still didn't bother to read it. To paraphrase Hemingway's Frederic Henry, we don't do the things we want to do.
So I never actually read the entire text of The New Frontier until this past winter, when I was able to sit down with the luxurious Absolute edition and dive into Cooke's illustrated world. I enjoyed it immensely, enough that I wanted to reread it again this summer, which is what I have just done, and now I want to talk about it. But I don't want to talk about it in isolation, and I'm interested in the connection between texts, so I'll also talk about its logical precursor: The Golden Age.
Like The New Frontier, Robinson and Smith's The Golden Age deals with the era between the 1940s and the 1960s. The era in which the comic book Golden Age grew into the comic book Silver Age. The era in which America was undergoing its own transformation, moving from threats abroad to suspicion at home. And just as I had difficulty enjoying The New Frontier as a serialized comic, I couldn't appreciate The Golden Age in that manner either. I only bought the first two issues, actually, back in the early 1990s, and then I lost interest, vaguely thinking that I might buy it as a collected edition some day (even though collections were not guaranteed the way they are today). I did buy it when the trade paperback was released, and because I had never finished it originally, I read the collection immediately. And I liked it. But I thought it was deeply flawed.
I reread The Golden Age yesterday, after thinking about it in regards to The New Frontier. It's not a surprising connection, after all. Cooke himself claims The Golden Age as an inspiration for his own work. But my memory of The Golden Age was a bit hazy, and I recalled it being a much more cynical view of the territory than what Cooke achieved in The New Frontier. My recall was pretty accurate--Robinson and Smith present a quite cynical view of the late Golden Age America.
Now that I've read both works back-to-back, I'm interested in exploring what each says about super-heroes, what each says about America, and how each achieves its (very different) effects. These are the kinds of things I'll be looking at over the next few days.
James Robinson's use of History in The Golden Age
One of the things that strikes me about both The New Frontier and The Golden Age is the way the creators weave American history into their stories. On the surface, such a technique might not be surprising, especially considering that both tales take place in the past. And while it may be true that a so-called "historical novel" or "period film" would be amiss to neglect the details of history which fit its setting, the same isn't always true for comics.
In comics, stories set in the past tend to take place in some vague memory of the past, without any apparent intent in locking the stories into a particular date or era. Take the typical origin stories, or "Year One" stories which DC Comics' creators have retold again and again. In such a story, whether it be Miller and Mazzuchelli's take on Batman, or Waid, Augustyn, and Kitson's take on the Justice League, the setting lacks a distinct time stamp. The characters are younger, true, but the setting lacks specific period detail. The reason for this isn't at all surprising, because locking the characters' past into a specific date would require some major explanations about their ages in the present. Had Miller time-stamped the date on Batman: Year One, and included captions saying "May 3rd, 1980," or whatever, then that might have worked for a few years, but even if we assume that Batman was only 23 when he took inspiration from that window-smashing flying rodent, according to that temporal continuity, he'd be 50 years old in the current stories. And he's clearly not.
So we expect stories set in the past to avoid any kind of specific references to contemporary history, at least in comics. A recent jarring exception to that can be found in Diggle and Jock's newly released Green Arrow: Year One, in which a young Oliver Queen references the "Kevin Costner" Robin Hood. That means Queen must have become Green Arrow sometime in the mid-1990s, which might explain his age today (if he was 22 in 1992, he'd be 37 today, which might be right), but it also implies that his son Connor must only be a teenager today, and he's clearly older than that. Perhaps the reference will work better 10 years from now when the Kevin Costner reference will become part of the vague historical past, but right now it seems too current to make sense.
Anyway, the other MAJOR exception to the rule of not using historical references in comics is the case of stories set during World War II. Even comic books written at the time of WWII regularly included time-stamp references in a way that later comics tended to avoid. Yes, since then, Superman has met Kennedy, and you might see analogues of Bill Clinton or George W. in a story or two, but in the 1940s heroes came face to face with major historical figures (contemporaries to them) on an almost daily basis. Here's FDR! Here's Superman grabbing Hitler on a cover! Here's Tojo! Here's Hawkman enlisting in the army to fight overseas! Etc. Such close ties between "comic book reality" and real-life events never matched the heights of the WWII comics.
And that's why later writers, Roy Thomas MOST prominently among them (he practically invented the whole idea of historical nostalgia super-hero comics), felt compelled to weave actual historical events into the retelling of stories from the WWII era. Thomas's Invaders for Marvel and his All-Star Squadron for DC playfully fit the timeline of actual US history into the fictional timeline of the past super-heroes. In his letter columns, Thomas would often explain (or justify, for the more contentious fans) how the chronology worked.
But, other than WWII era-stories, most comic book stories that take place in the past (unless they are time travel stories, which have their own rules) DO NOT USE SPECIFIC HISTORICAL REFERENCES. It's weird to imagine novels or films avoiding such references—they would surely be criticized for it—but in comics, it's commonplace.
So, in the case of both The New Frontier and The Golden Age, you have two rather significant violations of that standard "rule." And both of which seem deeply indebted to the type of approach Roy Thomas favored so much.
Let's take The Golden Age first, since it was published a decade before Cooke's work. The Golden Age seems like a logical off-shoot of Thomas's All-Star Squadron. It features many of the same characters, and Johnny Quick, a relatively obscure DC character from the past, would certainly not have been a suitable narrator for the story without the characterization Thomas provided in years of All-Star Squadron stories. James Robinson is clearly building on the foundation Thomas created. So, it's not surprising that he would, like Thomas, blend US history into his story. Yet Robinson's approach differs in two distinct ways: (1) He doesn't seem interested in the exact historical details and how they fit into his timeline—he seems more interested in the general sense of historical forces of the time, and (2) Unlike Thomas, who was writing out of a Golden and Silver Age optimism and a belief in the American Dream, Robinson was writing from a post-Watchmen perspective, as a foreign-born writer, who could play with the cynical expectations of the time.
Thus, Robinson gives us coke-sniffing "super-heroes," corruption, brutality, and sex in a tale which features the "pure" heroes of the DC Golden Age of comics. Robinson's approach is not to use specific elements of McCarthyism or the Red Scare (even though those ideas are referenced at least once), but to use the general sense of paranoia and panic, the cynical manipulation of the public for personal gain, and the looming threat of the bomb.
Ultimately, however, Robinson uses all of this as a backdrop for a traditional super-hero romp. The coke-sniffing "super-hero" turns out to be Hitler in disguise!!! (Well, actually the brain of Hitler in the body of a former kid sidekick—talk about a symbol of corruption!) And the hero-turned-power-hungry-politician in the form of the patriotic Mr. America turns out to be old JSA villain the Ultra-Humanite, who knows a thing or two about brain transplants. So, in the end, it's just a classic Golden Age story about punching Hitler and defeating an evil genius.
But it's Robinson's historical subtext which makes the story resonate. It's his use of those undercurrents of paranoia and despair which make these formerly perfect heroes of the past seem flawed and human. His story starts dark and becomes darker but, by the end, Robinson's veil of cynicism falls away, and he reveals himself to be a humanist, if not an optimist. His reverence for these Golden Age characters would not let them be truly corrupted—it had to be evil masterminds and Hitler all along.
And that, perhaps, is one of the failures of The Golden Age. The shock of the initial chapters is just a ruse, and as low as these characters seem to sink, everything can be explained by pseudo-science and comic book logic.
It's just another Justice Society of America story, ultimately, but it's a good one. And Robinson's use of the undercurrents from that era of history make it work, even if it never transcends its roots.
The New Frontier and Camelot
While The Golden Age used the historical subtext to evoke currents of paranoia and doom in a super-hero story, The New Frontier approaches history with a different agenda. As Ultimate Matt pointed out in response to yesterday's post, The Golden Age is labeled an "Elseworlds" title, which not only grants it an exemption from DC continuity, but it allows more freedom for the creators to take the characters and setting in a fresh direction.
The New Frontier, however, is not labeled as an "Elseworlds." And yet, it strays far more from the currently accepted version of continuity than The Golden Age does. The key word there is "accepted." Darwyn Cooke, in his annotations, states that he approached The New Frontier with a set of rules:

1. The timeline is real and covers 1945 to 1960. Silver Age characters appear at the time DC started publishing them.
   
2. Retcons haven't happened yet.
   
3. No New Frontier retcons could contradict original continuity—they had to complement existing continuity or show a fresh point of view.
   
4. When the story ended, everything had to be as it was when the JLA debuted in Brave and the Bold #28.
   
5. Snapper Carr does not exist.
   

In other words, you should be able to pull out your original comics from that era (or the Archive editions) and read them concurrently with The New Frontier and nothing Cooke does should contradict what happens in those old comics.
The problem with the continuity is that the comics from that era didn't have any continuity. It was never explained how a character could be on the moon in one issue of his own comic, and under the ocean in the same month in his Justice League adventure. All Golden and Silver Age DC continuity is a retcon. So what Cooke did was create his own continuity—he made his own sense out of the various adventures as they were originally published, although the bulk of the book deals with the time between major events. Just like The Golden Age, The New Frontier is about filling in the gaps.
While James Robinson filled the pre-Silver Age gap with an almost allegorical tale of Cold War paranoia and corruption, Darwyn Cooke fills the gap with a sense of wonder and idealism, and he uses his attitude toward history to solidify that tone.
Cooke's approach takes three strands: (1) The Right Stuff-inspired history of that era, embodied by the test pilots and early astronauts, (2) The early promise of the Kennedy administration, and (3) The strange DC comics history as seen in the stories published during that time. Cooke uses the first two strands to illuminate the latter. He puts the Silver Age ascension into perspective as part of a generation of hope and achievement. He shows that the formation of the Justice League was not a random incident, but part of a larger historical movement which led (in our reality) to things like the Peace Corps and Apollo 11.
Cooke ties together such disparate elements as The War that Time Forgot, The Challengers of the Unknown, Dr. Seuss, and all of the characters who would join the initial incarnation of the JLA into a single narrative. And although it takes quite a while before the villain emerges and the heroes band together, the narrative is structured around the real historical forces that would have shaped the creation of these characters. John Broome doesn't wax poetically about the symbolism of Hal Jordan's career as a test pilot in the original Green Lantern run from the Silver Age, but Cooke takes the fact that he was a test pilot and places him in the actual context of such a man. He even includes a scene where the young Jordan meets Chuck Yeager.
That's quite a different approach to history than we saw in The Golden Age, which covers a very similar time frame.
Although Cooke didn't intend (according to his "rules") to change any of the original stories, his interpretation of "fresh point of view" allows him to add things which would have been more historically true even if they weren't addressed in the comics of the time. For example, he not only changes Wonder Woman into an almost plump, hawkish, zestful character (to signify her Greek origins and Amazon heritage), but he creates an entirely new character to illuminate the civil rights struggle of the time. Since he had no black DC characters to draw upon, he created a Silver Age analogue to Steel, the black Superman ally. The Silver Age Steel, unlike his modern equivalent, isn't a technological marvel. Instead, this earlier incarnation of John Henry suffers at the hands of the KKK before taking vengeance, and ultimately dying when he's betrayed by an uncaring white America (symbolized by a blonde little girl, who points out his location to his pursuers). John Henry never meets the Justice League or teams up with any heroes. His death doesn't affect them at all, really, since they didn't know him. But Cooke includes a scene where Edward R. Murrow mourns the fallen hero and laments the state of the country, bringing an actual historical personage into the DC story.
The civil rights subplot, although powerful, is overwhelmed by the exceeding optimism of the other plot threads. Cooke's America, as full of conflict as it might have been, is one of scientific progress and movement toward a brighter future. His villain, ultimately revealed to be Dinosaur Island itself (a sentient being who has unleashed monster after monster), is even more absurd than the Hitler-brain-transplant nemesis in The Golden Age, but because Cooke accentuates the fun and spectacle of the super-heroes (and, to be clear, his emphasis is on the men and women in the costumes, and the risks they take for their heroism), the absurdity of the villain doesn't detract from the story.
Both The Golden Age and The New Frontier end with similar images (the first appearance of the Justice League banded together) and similar sentiments (hope for the future), but where James Robinson built that hope out of the wreckage of the 1940s, Darwyn Cooke builds it out of the dreams of the men and women who sacrificed for the promise of tomorrow.
Both books end with optimism for comic books and optimism for our country, but they took starkly different approaches to get there.
The Unstoppable Force of Progress: Characterization in The New Frontier
Since both The New Frontier and The Golden Age re imagine comic book chronology through one part actual US history, one part comic book history, and one part imagination, it's not surprising to find both Cooke and Robinson taking liberties with the characterization of these pre-Silver Age heroes. Both creators ask the question asked by any creator attempting to retell stories from the past: Okay, this is how they were portrayed, but what were the characters who did these things REALLY like?
I'll start by looking at The New Frontier. Cooke doesn't focus his story on one dominant point of view the way Robinson does (with Johnny Quick), but he tells his story through a few central characters:
Rick Flagg: Leader of the WWII-era Suicide Squad (and presumably the father, or grandfather, of the Ostrander-penned incarnation). Cooke presents him as a tough guy cliché. He's a Hemingway hero—he does what needs to be done and doesn't whine about it or waver in his determination. In Act III of the narrative, his position in the story is replaced by the similarly-characterized King Faraday, who also does what needs to be done, although he seems to have more internal conflict than Flagg. Faraday is a spy, after all, not a soldier. But both characters represent a government which has the best interests of the country in mind. If they hurt a few individuals along the way, that's a necessary sacrifice for the good of the many.
Hal Jordan: The man who would be Green Lantern is NOT portrayed as a cocky rocket jock, as he usually is in contemporary interpretations. Cooke turns his lack of fear into a self-destructive streak stemming from his face-to-face act of self-defense in Korea. In Cooke's universe, Jordan doesn't immediately become a hero just because an alien handed him a ring. It takes time for Jordan to learn that he deserves to be a hero, and that's a large part of what The New Frontier is about. He doesn't reveal himself in Green Lantern costume until AFTER he risks his life to save the world working as a pilot. The two-page "hero shot" of the characters walking towards camera (a la The Right Stuff) shows some costumed heroes, but Jordan is wearing a flight suit. Cooke seems to be showing that he needed to prove himself TO himself before he could accept his new identity, but his reluctance to use the power of the ring leads to Nathaniel Adam's death. (Adam is later reborn as Captain Atom in the comics, but that doesn't happen in this story, and as far as Jordan should be concerned, Adam is dead.) Cooke doesn't provide Jordan with any time for remorse, though, since he needs to use his ring to kick alien butt. The ring, by the way, is also shown as a symbol of destructive energy. When Jordan first uses it, he cannot control it, and it causes great damage. Cooke, then, seems to indicate that the ring might symbolize nuclear energy, and the subtext would be that Jordan's hesitance to use it led to another hero's death. Ultimately, Jordan is Cooke's symbol of the Kennedy era: conflicted, yet determined to bring forth a positive future—harnessing great powers for the good of the nation (and the world).
John Jones, the Manhunter from Mars: Jones says, "...this is a world where good and evil struggle in all levels of existence. I want to be a force for good." That's a simplistic view of humanity, but it's one seemingly shared by Cooke throughout this work. Good and evil may not be easily discernible on the surface, and Cooke gives us the threatening-looking John Henry (with a hangman's hood) as a hero and a little blonde girl as a villain, but the line between good and evil is absolute (and, in fact, John Jones assumes the role of a film-noirish detective so he can find the evil beneath the surface appearance of the world). Jones defines this ethical stance for the reader, and it represents the code of Golden and Silver Age comic books, which lacked anything but absolutes. Even though Cooke might try to provide some not-so-subtle shades of gray (Jordan as a murderer, Wonder Woman as feminist avenger, an undercurrent of xenophobia), his view of history seems to echo the simplicity of the comic book stories of the era. Individuals may not have always done the right things at all times, but it was an era of progress, and good triumphed over evil. The subtext could also indicate that governmental order triumphed over chaotic nature, with the unified heroes, under the leadership of the US government, destroying a threat that wasn't so much malicious as it was animalistic.
Even though Cooke's characterization of some of these characters, Hal Jordan in particular, might not match traditional representations of these individuals, I think it works in the context of the story. The characters serve the story and add a few layers to the text, but it's primarily a historical action spectacle, a celebration of progress over stagnation, and Cooke's characterization unifies the text. I don't think his characters have many hidden depths, but I think their lack of depth matches a story which is primarily about the grand force of history.
As one final observation: Cooke is actually better at small character moments with the minor characters than he is at developing convincing lead characters. The death of Johnny Cloud, Jimmy Olsen's eagerness, the sassiness of Carol Ferris, and several other character bits show Cooke's facility on the small scale, even if his epic narrative doesn't provide the opportunity for subtle nuances with the major characters.
Characterization in The Golden Age: Dragging Heroes to Earth
While Cooke ignores anyone else's retroactive continuity to graft archetypal personalities onto the early Silver Age heroes in The New Frontier, Robinson takes characters straight out of Roy Thomas's All-Star Squadron (like Johnny Quick on the left here) and Young All-Stars and sends them on a dark journey into the 1950s. Robinson does not re imagine these characters drastically, although he seems to do so with Mr. America (but that's part of his narrative ruse). Instead, he takes their established characterization and expands upon it by adding seeds of self-doubt, paranoia, and despair as the characters face a world in which the villains are not as easily identified as they once were. Robinson misdirects the reader at first by pretending to adopt a simplified Watchmen approach, pretending that he's showing what these characters would have been like without costumed villains to fight or gangsters to punch, when, in truth, he's simply changed the nature of the evil to something more covert and less easy to spot. (Which might seem Watchmen-esque as well, except Alan Moore showed us that the heroes were the villains in that story, and here, Robinson ultimately reveals that secret villains with brain-transplant powers were behind the whole thing from the beginning.)
Here's a quick rundown of the central characters in The Golden Age:
Johnny Chambers, a.k.a Johnny Quick: Johnny not only provides the book-ends to the story but, as a documentary filmmaker, he provides the exposition which sets up the story context. One of the things Robinson does NOT do well here, by the way, is clearly distinguish between narrative voice (provided through white, rectangular caption boxes), and newsreel voice over (also provided by white, rectangular caption boxes), although perhaps the colorist was supposed to use different color cues for each and didn't. The CHARACTERS who narrate, like Johnny Chambers, each have their own style of caption—Johnny's are rounded and blue, as you can see in the image. Actually, it's not that it's so difficult to identify the narrative voice, it's just that there is an omniscient narrator who pops up every once in a while for no good reason, and tells us things about the story sometimes, while other times he sounds like he's trying to give us character thoughts but not really: the highly subjective "fingers...fumbling...focusing...trying to..." immediately follows the objective "a photographer lurks among the rubble." The photographer is the one who's fingers are supposedly fumbling as he tries to snap the photo, so why does the caption sound like a bad Batman internal monologue? This really has nothing to do with Johnny Chambers, but I just wanted to point out this major flaw in the narration throughout. With so many characters (Johnny being one) actually providing narration through captions, why does Robinson add an omniscient narrator also? It's jarring and ineffective. It's like he took the strategies of Watchmen with the multiple points of view, and then spliced the conventional narrator on top of it. It just doesn't work.
But a few more things about Johnny: He smokes, and he wears glasses. He still has his powers, but even though they would help him in his day job, he doesn't use them. And he's incredibly suspicious, which is the characteristic that makes him the character the reader most identifies with. He's also lost the woman he loves because he works too hard, although he gets her back in the end. In short, he's a slightly older (although he actually seems to get younger as the story progresses, perhaps symbolizing his return to heroic stature), slightly more sullen, slightly more flawed version of the character we saw in the comics produced in the 1980s (even though those stories were set in the 1940s). He refers to his costumed self as "That Jerk!" at the beginning of the story, but ends on a hopeful note as he describes a "new age...fresh and clear and bright...as sterling silver!" He's never really a cynic, but his pessimism and self-loathing turns to optimism in the end (even quickly dismissing the threat of McCarthyism to look ahead to the glowing future of super-heroics).
Paul Kirk, a.k.a Manhunter: If we play out the James-Robinson-is-trying-to-do-Watchmen-but-not-as-well game a bit more, we could say that if Johnny Chambers is the Dan Dreiberg analogue (the low-self-esteem voice of reason and calm) then Paul Kirk is clearly the Rorschach character. He's the crazy one who will surely upset the apple cart, yet isn't that what has to happen in order to get to the truth? That's his role, anyway. Unlike Rorschach (in his insane way), Kirk doesn't have a methodical approach to uncovering the truth. In fact, he's tormented by the truth, which lies buried beneath mind implants, exploding into awareness only through a series of horrible dreams. He seems deeply disturbed because of the War, but he's actually deeply disturbed because of the secrets he knows. He's another character, like Johnny, who seems to become more youthful and vibrant in the final Act, when he is able to unleash his demons through old-fashioned fisticuffs. Unlike Johnny, though, he visibly suffers for a long time before he reaches the point of action. Here's a sample of his internal monologue from one of his many tortured dreams: "Save the eagle. Save it. Save—n...no...nooooohhhh!!" Then he wakes up and thinks, "Still afraid." That's about the extent of his characterization. He's tormented, fearful, and knows he should be better than that. And, "save the eagle?" Geez, I wonder what in the world that could possibly mean in a book about corruption within the American government. Clearly, even though this book is directed at an older audience than the original Golden Age tales, Robinson keeps his symbolism quite simplistic.
Tex Thompson, a.k.a. Mr. America, and Daniel Dunbar, a.k.a. Dan the Dyna-Mite: These are the two characters most radically changed from their Golden Age counterparts. Mr. America was a whip-wielding patriotic hero and Dan was a kid sidekick who later, under Roy Thomas's writerly guidance, became one of the lead characters in Young All-Stars. In Robinson's story, Mr. America becomes a corrupt politician who seeks power by any means necessary, and Dan the Dyna-Mite becomes America's beloved Dynaman, the only active costumed crime fighter of the time. And he snorts coke. And he's evil.
Neither of these two characters have internal monologues via captions for the reader, because that would give away the twist. Tex Thompson is not really who he seems, for he has the brain of the evil Ultra-Humanite (who has in previous stories adopted the forms of a gigantic white gorilla and a hot ex-starlet, among others). And Daniel Dunbar, who has fallen so far from grace in our eyes (a former teen sidekick with a drug problem whoring around) actually has the BRAIN OF ADOLF HITLER!
So there's not much to say about the characterization here, since these are two evil characters in the most simplistic way. What is interesting, though, is that (a) Robinson chooses one character, Thompson, who seems vaguely sleazy to modern readers anyway, what with that whip and the mustache, and when he's shown to be corrupt, we can buy into it, falling into Robinson's trap of thinking that it's just a regular dude becoming corrupted by power; and (b) Robinson's use of the pure and innocent Dunbar is also a good choice, because it is not only shocking to see him corrupted so extremely (before the truth of the brain-swap is revealed), but it's a nod to cultural expectations about former child stars, who, by the 1990s, were expected to grow up and become criminals or drug addicts or worse, at least by our tabloid-fascinated society.
Like a director who makes his film better through excellent casting, Robinson uses the right two ex-heroes in the apparent role of the villains. His bait-and-switch works, although I was personally disappointed that the threat turned out to be external (evil villains) and not the corruption of these characters from within.
Robinson uses other characters to show the corruption of innocence and loss of the heroic dream. Robotman, so noble in Roy Thomas's All-Star Squadron, has lost any humanity by the time of this story—he's pure machine, while Alan Scott, Green Lantern is conflicted about his duty as a business leader and law-abiding citizen and his passion for ring-slinging and butt-kicking. Hourman is shown to be addicted to his Miraclo pills, while the man once known as the Tarantula is an egoist with writer's block. Ted Knight, Starman, who Robinson would go on to write with great depth and sensitivity in the ongoing series about Jack Knight, is a mad genius who is trying to put the pieces of this shattered world together through science.
I should add here that Robinson, unlike Cooke, isn't drawing from the original sources as the basis for his story. He's adapting his characterizations from the work done during contemporary comics, as Roy Thomas provided retroactive characterization (and explanations) for the WWII-era heroes. Robinson is building on the layers which Roy Thomas built upon the layers which Gardner Fox (among others) built.
Overall, Robinson does provide a sense of disillusionment in his characterizations in this story, even if his narrative technique is sometimes sloppy or inconsistent. Cooke tried to add a bit of humanity to iconic characters in his work, but he was mostly interested in the icons of the era. Robinson drags his characters down into the muck and then builds them back up again, hoping to show how their inner humanity wins out (with all of its flaws) in the face of systematic adversity. Cooke's characters inhabit the skies, the stars. Robinson's characters live on the ground.
So, the final verdict, after looking at The Golden Age and The New Frontier for a week: Not much different than my initial assessment after reading them both last weekend. The Golden Age is flawed because of its inconsistent narrative point of view and it's cheap, brain-swapping revelations. Robinson and Smith capture the disillusionment and paranoia of the time quite well, but it all amounts to nothing except a superhero slug fest in the end. It's 80% of a great work, and 20% of stuff that doesn't quite fit (including the optimistic ending, which seems unearned). As part of a larger, genre-wide trend to make super-heroes more "realistic," violent, and depressing, I'm not a huge fan of its influence.
The New Frontier is flawed, but it's a flawed masterpiece, and I can imagine revisiting the story many times in the future (and I can't say the same about The Golden Age). Cooke tries to include too much in the narrative, and the main threat of Monster Island isn't presented as well as it needs to be, but the book contains dozens of amazing sequences, and it features sharp, engaging characters who flash in and out of the story. The speed of the narrative demands that the book be read quickly, and it works best when read this way, not because it allows the reader to gloss over the weak parts of the story, but because The New Frontier is an overture, and can be best appreciated when all of its notes are heard in rapid sequence. I didn't love it when it first came out, in the completely inappropriate floppy installments, but I loved it after reading the Absolute version a week ago, and I love it just as much after studying it closely all week.
As one final thought: Both The Golden Age and The New Frontier tap so deeply into comic book lore, and I am so deeply embedded in it myself, that I wonder if either of these works has any merit for a "civilian" reader. And I wonder if, perhaps, the darker, more "realistic" tone would be appealing to a non-comics fan, more so, perhaps, than the wide-eyed optimism (tinged with bits of darkness) seen in Cooke's work. Or would the non-comics fan find both stories completely useless and without merit? Are both works examples of the snake swallowing its own tail? I've already been swallowed by the snake of comic book geekery, so I can't answer that one.

I have had this idea in my head for a while about writing a fanfic with an alternate timeline Jonathan Joestar as the main antagonist. This idea was spurred on by the fact that I often hear Giorno referred to as a "DIO if he was good". And there is merit to this claim: both characters suffered greatly as children, are extremely ambitious, and are willing to use morally dubious means to accomplish what they see as noble goals. But while Giorno still respects the sanctity of life and has lines that he'd never cross, DIO has no such scruples and made clear that there is no line he wouldn't cross to achieve his goals.
The thing that made the difference between the two was the presence of a moral figure in their lives. Giorno's brief relationship with the gangster he saved showed him that violence wasn't just a tool to subjugate and degrade the weak, but to battle the strong and uplift those who couldn't fight for themselves. DIO had no such mentor in his life, and was therefor forced to fend for himself. He ultimately came to the conclusion that you couldn't trust or value anyone but yourself, and anything was justified if it mean that you came out on top.
With all of that said, let's flip it on its head: what would it take to make Jonathan a villain? And what kind of villain would he be? I have my own ideas but I'm curious to see what everyone else thinks.

At the end of episode 8, Magneto releases a world wide EMP that disables technology. I won't go into detail how ridiculous the notion that only 'thousands are feared dead' as a result of Magneto 'ruining all first world infrastructure and throwing civilization centuries back into the dark age ' or the fact that the X-Men seen to think they can stop the consequences from being permanent by persuading Magneto to 'prevent the Earth's magnetic field from dying' by snapping his fingers before sunset.
Instead, I want to discuss the treatment of Magneto in-universe. I'll be assuming only what is established on-screen is true. So, I won't be asserting that people died from falling airplanes or by being run over by out of control cars; I won't say that children passed away because of their disabled peacemaker and I'll assume that absolutely zero mutants were killed as consequences of Magneto EMP.
With that said, Magneto was established as having killed thousands of innocent humans, is hellbent on killing more by not reverting what he did and thinks he's entirely justified. He's beyond a doubt a deranged mass murdering world class terrorist and one of the most evil characters in the show.
So, why is the show so intent on sympathizing with him?
After his self-fellating spiel during the Trial of Magneto, our hero which happens to share a face with Granny Goodness pats himself on the back for perfoming an ungodly feat of willpower and self restrain when he selfessly decided to not lash out against humanity at large for the crime of being of the same species as the terrorist that depowered Storm. At that point, the writing was already on the wall. The show thinks that, at some level, Magneto justified in lashing out against innocent people.
But was only after the most recent episodes that it becomes overt.
The end of episode 8 already set up the mood for episode 9. While lights all around the world were dying out, signalling that Magneto's EMP affected the entire planet, Valeria Cooper was making a speech about human-mutant relationships in which she brings up that the people in Genosha were already expecting the day humans would come for them. She finishes by saying Magneto was Right.
But she is but only one character, and hardly a heroic one at that. So, it wasn't that bad...
Here comes Professor "Battered Wife" X. After Wolves comes to the obvious conclusion that Mags isn't going to change his mind and undo the damage if they ask, Charles asks him to not blame Magneto just because he choose to kill a few thousands of his own volition and that the Professor was the one to brought them there in the first place. Well, Xavier did trust Magneto to not go crazy again, maybe he is to blame for all of that. Is not a good look to be this defensive of Erik, but as Wolverine was talking about killing him, I think is understandable.
Then, it gets worse. When Magneto comes to recruit the X-Men into his mutant supremacist club, Charles completely fails to stand up to him and call him out on his bullshit. The guy ends a discussion on morality against a mass murdering world class terrorist with his head down in shame. It's no wonder two X-Men defected to Magneto's side on the spot.
But that is okay. After all, debating is a skill set. You can lose an argument even though you're right if the other guy is better at words than you...
And then, it gets worse. Again.
Charles sets up a mind skype call to beg President Kelly to not take offensive action against Magneto. He argues that attacking the guy who EMP'd the entire world would only escalete the situation further. But for some reason, Kelly thinks Magneto is a raging lunatic that MUST be stopped. Charles retorts by saying:
"Not a lunatic. Merely a man trying to survive in a world that has prove his worst fears true, time and again."
We are not shown the end of the conversation, so I'll just be reasonbale and assume Charles mindraped the president into doing his bidding and not calling the Avengers on Magneto.
Man, Rogue WISHES she rode Magneto's dick as hard as Charles does. Holy crap! The guy can't help but defend Magneto with every ounce his strength even when far more reasonable people point out the guy can't be argue with.
Talking of Rogue, remember the 2 X-Men that sided with Magneto? She is one of them. Without even adressing her feelings over the thousands dead part, Rogue just turns her back to the X-men, shits on both Storm and Xavier and everything they stood for, and accepts the invitation to make a new Genosha and guide mutants into a new age alongside Erik.
I would say this is completely character assassination that absolutely ruins Rogue as a hero, but if the Professor is anything to go by, maybe Magneto's dick game is just THAT amazing.
As for the other X-Men that joins Magneto... it was Sunspot.
You see, Sunspot does not want to come out as a mutant for fear of backlash. He is a teenager, he wants to live a normal live, so while is not the most admirable decision is an understandable one. That is, it was until he decided to join Magneto.
Sunspot's mother knew the entire time he was a mutant but pretended not to. She loves him all the same, but thinks he should keep his mutation hidden for the sake of himself as well as for the sake of her company. Roberto is disappointed, but that is the end of it.
Until human sized sentinels try to apprehend him.
Roberto and Jubilee end up in the middle of Roberto's mother's party where everyone recognizes Sunspot as a mutant. Instead of siding with him in front of his peers, the mother asks him to stand down and go with the setinels that are pretending to not be hellbent on killing mutants in that moment. It was a bad decision, but in that specific situation, it looked somewhat reasonable from her POV.
That is what pushes Sunspot to join with Magneto.
He was fine living his normal life when he could pass for a mutant. Now that he got exposed, he will not only take measures for the sake of mutantkind but will do that by siding with mass murdering lunatic that will get his own mother and 'thousands more' killed by not fixing the Earth's magnet field. That does not make him look good. He comes off as a selfish brat that instantly gives up on his own mother and humanity the nanosecond he gets the taste of what your average mutant gets everyday.
When Genosha happened, Sunspot went so far as to say that's what they get for coming out in the open, which does not do him any favours.
But what is the point of bringing Rogue and Sunspot? This post is about Magneto, right?
Because when you depict heroic characters siding with the villain, you make his position seen more legitimate when that should not be the case with Magneto. By having Sunspot and Rogue siding with Magneto with minimal pushback, the shows further endorses his actions.
The show clearly does not think much of Charles. He is constatly shitted on by everyone, always comes out of every conversation looking back and can't argue his way out of a paper bag. He can't do so much as point out the fact Magneto choose to kill those thousands of people. Instead, Xavier blames himself and everyone else rather than hold Erik accountable for what he choose to do. Magneto is the cool, morally complex tragic hero 'forced' to do evil and Charles is the scumy wannabe good guy with no backbone living in the dreamland as far as the writing is concerned.
One critiscism always leved against the X-Men is that they risk their lives in order to appease humans. That is not true. That would make them BY FAR the most pathetic superhero team that ever existed. A group so utterly lacking in backbone, in willing to do defend themselves that they rather serve the people who kill and hate them instead of lashing out. And I suspect the people behind X-Men 97 agree with that assertion on some level.
That is not true. The X-Men don't fight in order to appease humans nor to show the world 'there are good mutants'. They fight humans, mutants, aliens, plants and whatever comes their way because is the right thing to do. That's also why they stand up for mutants rights. Not out of self-interest, but because is the right thing to do.
By shilling so fucking hard for Magneto, depicting Xavier as a bitch X-Men 97 does a disservice to the X-Men despite being a fairly good show.
TL:DR This show struggles to properly call out Magneto for his wrong doing. Also, having him lead the team AND have a relationship with Rogue on top of everything else feels like too much favoritism.

I've heard about KB3 and his potential Star Trek flick but I wanna try to stay realistic to what he'd actually make considering he scrapped an idea he's been cooking for presumably 4 years.
For people who don't want to read an essay, my short answer is I would really like to see Tarantino take on a retelling of a specific era of the Mafia.
I'm personally very disappointed to hear about The Movie Critic being sacked. I was really looking forward to seeing tarantino's last film being an homage, analysis, but mostly appreciation of new Hollywood.
Going forward with what we have however, my potential hot take is that i think his most brilliant movies are his historical rewritings.
They serve as some of the best genre pieces. Despite being an old-school man with many old-school philosophies, Tarantino's writing style feels very hyper modern with so many obvious well known classical influences. One obvious avenue he has yet to explore is the nostalgic mob movie. If there's one director I would love to see tackle it's him with his iconic dialogue.
That is to say I believe this could be an amazing opportunity to bring back John Travolta, Steve Buscemi, maybe even Sam Jackson and cast them as well-known/niche/fictional gangsters from the 20th century history. I think the casting possibilities could be wild, not to mention, Tarantino is an absolute master at this kind of stuff. It also gives him an opportunity to complete his "historical canon" in a sort of way and pay all the homages to new Hollywood that he wanted to with The Film Critic.
Maybe you won't agree but this is honestly a movie I would love to see from him that goes beyond simple fan service.

I have a very complicated situation going on right now and honestly, I am the last person who should be in charge of teenagers but, so this is my life (at least I've done better than dad).
I'm trying to think of a way to write this in a way that makes sense. My older sister's husband is in the military and deployed overseas. His dad recently had a small stroke and needs help. My sister asked my younger sister to watch her two kids (Kinsleigh, 15 and Adam, 13) but my younger sister is in the Air National Guard and had to have missions or something. So she asked me. She admitted to me that I'm a last resort and she's having a hard time trusting me but I said I could handle it.
I arrived on Tuesday night and Kinsleigh asked me if should could have a study partner over. I said that was fine and I loved this kid. He new more about nerd culture and west coast gangster rap than I did and I loved talking to him. They studied for a while and I could just tell this kid was deep into his emotions for my niece. I just so happened to be taking trash out when I heard him ask that he'd really like to hang out as more than friends and she said that she wasn't sure.
Well on Wednesday night I heard Kinsleigh talking to one of her friends that her study partner was a nice guy but she just wasn't into him "like that" and she felt bad that she even sort of led him on. I decided that I would give her a day to come to her senses and go out with him so i asked on Thursday and she said that no she didn't see him in that way. I told her that if I was going to be in charge she was going to go on a date with him and I would not allow cruelty to nice people. She screamed that she wasn't being cruel and I was like that's it, you are going out with him.
She faked being sick on Friday but i made her go to school and she begged me not to make her go out with this guy and I said that no she had to learn she couldn't be cruel to people and lead them on.
He was such a gentleman when he picked her up on Friday and he had her home right on time and even walked her to the door and thanked me for allowing him to date my niece. When Kinsleigh came inside she said "I fucking hate you, Aunt Jessica would never have humiliated me like that" and went and slammed her door and I haven't seen her since.
My sister called this morning and reamed me out and said that she wants her daughter to be nice as well but I "took away" any sense of agency she had with this guy and that I'm not her parent. I'm there to call 911 if somthing goes wrong, not to "emotionally scar" her children because they make different choices. She also accused me of favoring this kid over my own niece.
I don't get it-my sister was severely bullied as a kid until she literally turned into the swan in college and I thought I was doing what she would do and not allow Kinsleigh to be a bully herself.

• Stop the charade, I know it's you, Mr.Shadows, you are the leader of the shadow mafia said Andrew Blake
  

Balthazar Blaze walks towards him.

• These are very serious accusations, you arrested him, Mr. Shadows it was this Alberto Falluci, wasn't it, said Balthazar Blaze smiling.

Meanwhile, in the police station, in his office, Commissioner Arthur Brandon has a conversation on the phone with Balthazar Blaze who is in his limousine in the back which is driven by his driver Gregory:

• Andrew Blake figured out it was me, he has no proof but you have to kill him before he finds anything and also kill Inspector Wilson, he will probably help him find them too and don't fail, it's me who pays you all, remember, if you fail, you won't receive any money says Balthazar Blaze.

Later in Blaze Industry, Inspector Wilson and Andrew Blake are in a room, going through a drawer full of files.

• It must have upset you, didn't it, to not have been able to save your brother, Dwight and to have understood later that the man you saved was the one who killed him said Balthazar Blaze

Carl Falluci, the crime boss at the head of the underworld, the leading crime lord of the Falluci crime family.
Carl Falluci's son, Alberto Falluci as well as three other male members of the Falluci family, Alfredo, Carlton and Al.
In the Dinozzo crime family, there is its leader, crime lord Victor Dinozzo as well as several other male members of his family.

• Mr. Dinozzo, let's try to resolve this before going into a gang war said Carl Falluci

-We will not negotiate with our enemies says Victor Dinozzo hitting a point on the table where they are all sitting around.

Later in the Dinozzo mansion, Andrew Blake has a discussion with Victor Dinozzo, he still has a blue tuxedo, they walk together:
-Yes, I declared this gang war, I've been wanting to become the last remaining mafia boss for years, soon it will happen said Victor Dinozzo.

• you don't really hide being a crime lord says Andrew Blake.
  
• If you want to denounce me, I will order my men to cut your throat, that's power, Mr. Blake said Victor Dinozzo
  

The next day, in the street, gangsters behind a red car and a blue car shoot at each other without touching each other, suddenly, an individual wearing a blue tuxedo and a black mask identical to that of Mr. Shadows starts shooting down the gangsters on the side of the red car, killing them, they collapse on the ground, the gangsters on the side of the blue car run away.
Later that night, at the Falluci mansion, Carl Falluci speaks to one of the gangsters working for him:

• That night, several of our men were shot, their bodies were found next to a red car, this can't go on, I invited Victor Dinozzo to our mansion, this evening, we have to convince him to end this war.

Suddenly the same individual who shot down his gangsters there, still wearing a blue tuxedo and a black mask identical to Mr. Shadows, appears behind them holding a rifle.
Carl Falluci turns around and sees him:

• You again said Carl Falluci before being shot several times by this masked individual with his rifle, he died and his corpse collapsed on the ground.

The gangster Carl Falluci was talking to ,runs away.

Suddenly a police officer comes towards them:

• gentlemen, we have to go to 13 rue Judson Philips, the witness to a shooting ran up to me and told me that he had seen Mr. Shadows wearing his usual mask shoot down several gangsters at this location yesterday in 11:40 p.m. said this police officer.
  
• You hear that, 11:40 p.m. and Mr.Shadows also shot Carl Falluci at that time, how can we be in two places in the same exact hour, either there are two Mr.Shadows or there is a copycat pretending to be Mr.Shadows says Andrew Blake
  

Later at the police station, Andrew Blake hears his phone ringing, he takes it out of one of his two pants pockets and picks it up, he has a conversation on the phone with Mr. Shadows who still has his voice tampered with:

• Hello Andrew, it's Mr.Shadows speaking to you again, I noticed the error that my copycat made.
  
• So it was indeed a copycat said Andrew Blake
  
• Exactly, he works with me, I ordered him to wear a mask identical to the one I wear to pretend to be me said Mr.Shadows on the phone

• Try to deduce it yourself said Mr.Shadows who hangs up.
  

The real Mr. Shadows is in a mansion, he wears his usual black mask with no holes and a black tuxedo.

• Now you can take off your mask, it's a shame that you made this little mistake by killing at the same time as me, my copycat said Mr.Shadows.

• Inspector, I have deduced the identity of the fake Mr.Shadows, it is Victor Dinozzo, not only does he have an obvious motivation to kill Carl Falluci, he wants to become the only remaining Greenstone mafia boss, he tells me you said himself but he wears a blue tuxedo just like the Mr.Shadows copycat but as you said, he was invited to the Falluci mansion the night Carl Falluci was shot dead by the fake Mr.Shadows, It's him, I'm sure, not only is it him but he works with the real Mr.Shadows says Andrew Blake.

In my opinion, any movie following a formula or pattern will never be considered great or will ever be remembered. This is because formulaic movie stories or characters won’t offer anything fresh to the audience. This will make the story predictable and boring. This is mainly applicable for South Indian mass masala movies- 1. In mass movies, How many times do we have to see some random character just boast about our hero? 2. In a fight scene, We all know that the hero is going to win the fight even before it starts. So what’s the point? Where is the thrill in knowing that our hero has already won the fight? Not even the hairstyle of the hero changes after a fight…not even a pinch of dust will be there on his shirt after fighting 30 goons. 3. Our hero will always be a നന്മയോളി. He doesn’t have any kind of limitations. He is morally perfect, physically strong and extremely charismatic. Even if the hero is a gangster, he will still be a good gangster. What a boring characterization? For a script writer, writing such characters will be hell. A good movie will always offer the audience something fresh. A story can only be compelling if the central character is imperfect and challenged. This is one of the main reasons why Chris Nolan’s Dark knight still remains as one of the best movies of all time. It was a movie that transcended the comic book genre. It showed the hero being pushed to the limit. It showed vulnerabilities, failures and what it took for the hero to “win”. This is what these mass movies lack. So, such films might have good collection records but they will never be remembered by the audience. For example, when we talk about the best movies of mohanlal, no one says “narasimham” now but everyone remembers thoovanathumbikal, dasaradham, drishyam etc. same goes for prithviraj. Everyone remembers “classmates” but no one will remember “kaduva”. I consider these kind of movies as lazy films which are meant to leech money off poor “fanboys”. You can point out films like Bahubali and John wick to counter my opinion. But even those movies offers fresh elements. The action sequences in Bahubali is something that was never seen before.

THIS IS A VERY LONG READ
I don't know if anyone is gonna see this, but I've been feeling a little off lately. Growing up I experienced intense forms of trauma from an early age. When I was a baby I was living in a very unsuitable/dangerous place for children with my birth parents. We were living in a run down motel. Drugs, pimps, hos, the whole thing.
We didn't have any money. My parents didn't have jobs. My dad was my mom's pimp. He was a drunken asshole who would beat the shit out of my mom daily. Like I'm not even exaggerating. This usually would happen when she would ask what we were going to eat because we were literally so hungry that my mom would have to give me water with sugar in it to give me some kind of energy,
With it being so often, when they would physically fight over me I would just crawl out of the middle of the bed and get on the floor. Usually there was a show playing like SpongeBob or Caillou.
Police found out after I was wandering down the road in the middle of the night in only my diaper and t-shirt. They immediately came to our residence and removed me from the home after discovering my parents and our living situation. I became a ward of the state. When the police came they came with hella cars and literally ripped me from my moms grasp while I kicked, screamed, and cried. I remember it like it was yesterday. (Honestly this was one of my first traumatic moments) Being so young ( I had to have been like 3 or 4 at the time) I couldn't quite understand what was happening and all I knew was that I wanted my mom.
I went to a temporary home. I hated it there. My mom would come every Friday to see me and I would always try to leave with her, but they would separate us by a gate and I would beg to go with my mom even long after she left. I didn't befriend any of the kids there. I wasn't normally around kids so I guess I didn't know how to.
Fast forward I am in a temporary home (I'm in the system by this point) They treated me nice there, but I was reminded that I was going to be adopted and wouldn't continue living there.
So I started visitations with a potential adoptee...my second "mom" (I was adopted into my blood family, so she was my second cousin)
Everything was fine. I would go over her house and she would tell me that she's fighting to get custody for me. Every time I visited her she kept reminding me that when the time came I would have to choose who I wanted to be with. My real mom or her (my second cousin)
I grew to like her and then one day I was back at my temporary house. The lady who was my guardian at the time informed me that I was going to be going to court my adoption was going to be finalized.
I had to make a choice. My real mom, or her, my second cousin.
Being the naïve and helpless little child that I was I chose my second cousin.
The court date is here. In the court I tell them that I chose my second cousin. My real mom was present. She was devastated she was crying so hard. I didn't know what to do. I still have her facial expression engrained in my mind. I didn't know what I had done. I was only a child.
(For context, my mom had another girl and two other boys who all got taken away from her and put into the system. So I'm sure with me being the youngest and her last, this day really broke her. She didn't have any of her children. For deeper context, her lifestyle was not by choice...it was essentially all that she had left given her circumstances and what she went through and endured at the hands of my family prior...but I'm not going to dive into that.)
So I'm adopted now. Everything is going fine until one day I accidentally let a curse word slip and my (new) moms true colors started to show. I was talking about a dream I had. I used to watch an old show called Johnny Bravo. In one episode (idk if this actually happened in the show, I was a kid) I remember the character Johnny sitting on a purple bench maybe like at a bus top or something. She misheard and thought I called her a purple bitch...(like girl you know damn well, but anyways) She made me physically put a bar of soap in my mouth and wash my tongue. She proceeded to tell my entire family that I cussed her out. (This never happened) She then insulted me about my behavior and told me that I shouldn't behave that way while telling me that she would send me back. I was scared and confused. This was only the beginning of her odd behavior and form of discipline toward me. Kids only mimic the enviornments that they're raised in...
I started therapy at the time. I had a lot of anger from where I used to live with my real parents. I did use profanity, I punched walls, I screamed. I thought it was normal behavior. My therapy helped a lot, but what didn't help was that during my time living with her and while I was being raised by her she would do things that...well just weren't right. So as i'm getting weekly therapy and case worker check-ins at my new home I am also actively being mentally, emotionally, verbally, and physically abused by my new mother.
Something in me knew...it wasn’t right.
One night I was eating a plate of dinner that she had prepared. I used to have to eat a shit ton of food because I was severely underweight for my age. The problem was..I didn't have much of an appetite, because well. I was never used to eating anything...
So one night I'm eating a pretty large plate of dinner and I would always eat so slow. I'm watching my favorite show which was SpongeBob at the time and I'm quite literally laughing my ass off. Like I was having a good damn time. Somehow that show was so funny at the time.
I had only taken a few bites of food...I just couldn't eat the rest so I kept getting up and telling my mom that I was full...she didn't believe me. I really was. So after going back several times she got angry. I mean really angry and she followed me out to the living room and tried to force me to eat the food. I kept refusing because I just couldn't take anymore of it and then.. I threw it up. I felt so bad after...but why couldn't she just believe me when I had said it was enough?
Fast forward to when i'm in elementary school. I had a poor academic performance. I just wasn't engaged in school and didn't really feel like I had a reason to care about it. I remember I couldn't spell very well and she didn't like that. So I would have to sit down for hours and hours and review my academic studies while she stood over me with a ruler in her hand. This is where the physical abuse started to pick up more. She started to use aggression as a form of making me submissive and to force me to fear her and always respect her wishes. Whenever I didn't spell something correctly or I made any kind of mistake she would tell me "put your hand out" and smack the hell out of my hand until it was red and stinging and when I didn't put it out she would hit me somewhere else.
My grades went up..but I feared her.
I was cutting up in first grade once. Acting out. I acted out a lot in my early academic years not knowing why I did, but one day my teacher called my mom.
She found out that I was failing my math tests. After the talk with my teacher she beat me so hard with the belt and I had welts everywhere. I had to start wearing long-sleeved in her fear of being discovered by cps. I got beat pretty often when something didn't go her way.
My grades went up...and they stayed up. I started to become really smart like to the literal point where my teachers were telling my mom that I was performing so well that I was performing way above my grade level. As I progressed through school I started receiving academic awards left and right. I was acing school, but school started to feel like the only place I was safe. I would have so much fun there. At the time I actually had friends. I had this one friend who went to the same school that I did in third grade. He also lived in the same apartments. His name was Xavier. We ended up becoming really close. I learned to mask my emotions at a really young age because my mom would constantly pick at me about everything. She was so obsessive. I would never show my true personality at home. Any chance of me being a happy and bubbily kid started to diminish when I would get home from school. I would just go straight to my room half the time. I didn't have a phone until I was in middle school so I would play videogames 24/7. I grew to love them. They were the first toy I had. My first comfort and coping mechanism. Xavier liked me so much as his friend that he started introducing me to his other friends. I started to hangout with them until one day my mom discovered I was hanging out with the boys (around my age of course) from around the complex. She feared that I would become fast with them (I was like 7, I wasn't thinking about all that...didn't even know what it was???) She shut it down immediately. As a matter of fact she stopped letting me go outside completely and started isolating me. One of my friends knocked on the door one day. He asked if I could come outside to play. I was there when she answered.
She told me to move before she answered the door, so I did, I stepped aside and watched as she answered the door. I was out of view.
She told him I wasn't there....
I was so confused. I was standing right next to her, I couldn't grasp why she would say that. He asked if I could come out when I was and she said I wouldn't be playing with them and closed the door
She explained to me that she didn't want me playing with boys and although I didn't understand I just accepted it. But she did let xavier come over with his little sister and only she was allowed in my room.
Fast forward to middle school. Idk what happened, but I had the worst social anxiety imaginable. I literally was completely mute around people I wasn't comfortable with. This hindered me. I was seen as a weird kid when really I was just misunderstood. It was a weird feeling considering that some of the kids I had went to elementary school with went to the same middle school as me, summer came and I just changed. I no longer talked. It was odd. This was my first experience with introversion. I started to get the sense that my mother didn't like me. She would blame me for random things I didn't do while her son (who was 20 something at the time) was always highly favored even though after he graduated from highschool he literally refused to work or do anything, but somehow I was always wrong.
I became depressed in the seventh grade.
I never communicated these feelings to my mom because I knew she didn't believe in these things.
I started failing my math class. I just couldnt understand the material. I hid my grades from her in fear of being beaten. One day she found out. She called me telling me that she had found out that I was failing my math class and that when she got home she was gonna beat my ass.
She did.
My mom thought a good beating would solve any problem. Of course she was wrong. It made me resent her more and more. As I got older she would start random arguments with me and gaslight me and tell me that I'm selfish and didn't care about her feelings over stupid shit. I always had to serve her. I had to do whatever she wanted. I couldn't go anywhere or do anything. My whole life was under her control. By time I was 12 years old I had realized this and made a promise to myself that when I was 18 I was gone.
She continued putting me through hell as the years went forward. The older I got the more I felt like her enemy. She would constantly try to sabotage my happiness. It angered me so much. I hated it down to the core. I started to become suicidal when I was 12. We would always move to different places because of her job changing so it already didn't help that I was an introvert and could never keep friends for long. I had a few best friends along the years, but those friendships typically ended in ruins.
At 16 I got my first boyfriend.
We were in the third city I've ever lived in by this point and he had made me happier than ever. I didn't know I could be so happy. Our "relationship" mostly consisted of us hanging out after school since I was not supposed to be with him and he was homeschooled. So I would come home hours and hours late. (I usually hid my entire life from her) so this was unexpected.
One day I mustered up the courage to tell her that I had a crush on someone and I wanted her to meet him. So oddly, she agreed and he came over dressed up one day. Everything was fine until one day she didn't want us hanging out anymore.
No warning.
No reason.
No mothafucking sense either. (lmao)
I was devastated. She had already pulled this bullshit with my ex bestfriend just because she was a tomboy making dumb and desperate attempts at desperations of justification for basically just sabotaging my developmental teenage years.
She would say "she's a lesbian, she'll want to date you" just because of the way she dressed, or she would try to suggest that she was trouble and keep trying to break our friendship apart.
With him what she decided to do was make fun of his culture and his hair and the fact that he was mexican. She tried calling him a gangster and said I shouldn't be with him. I confronted her and told her that was racist, but the cycle continued of her intentionally sabotaging things that I liked out of her own spite, narcissism, selfish desires and attempts to force her own way of how SHE wanted me to live.
She never cared about how I felt. I would plead and plead for hours with her until veins were literally forming in my head from stress at how its unfair with how she's treating me and she would just gaslight me and literally tell me
"I don't care about how you feel, life is hard"
"Imagine how I feel"
"You don't listen to me anyways, I can't wait until you move out of my house"
If she got angry enough of course I was getting beaten.
Around high school was the worst time of my life.
This is when she started physically assaulting me with her hands.
I had snuck out to see a boy before I met my ex boyfriend because I just wanted someone to hangout with and he was a kid within the area who hung out with me at a park before. She found us walking down the street one day when she was coming home from work.
I remember telling him "let go of my hand that's my mom"
Needless to say he caught on too late. She had definitely recognized me by that point.
She screamed at him to go home and for me to get in the car. I did and tried to start explaining, but she just told me to be quiet. She went to her room when she went upstairs, my heart was beating a mile a minute because I had expected to get beat. But I didn't know what was in store for me. She came downstairs after a few minutes and said something to me that I don't remember. Then she got onto my bed (my bed and whole room was in the living room because she refused to get me my own room after seventh grade claiming I didn't need any privacy.)
She then pulled a belt from behind her back. My fight or flight immediately kicked in and adrenaline rushed through my body. I just couldn't sit there and take it this time.
I bolted for the front door. It was around nighttime around now. When I passed the threshold I ran for a bit and then she started yelling for me to come back. I just turned around and looked at her. I paused with fear rushing through me and yelled no. She replied back "no?"
Her tone had obviously changed dramatically. I could tell that she had grown from anger to rage...
I turned back and started walking fast. She just chased me with the belt all the way into the street. She made several more attempts to get me to come back and then we were in front of someone's house with them sitting out in their driveway. She told me I had two options. Either I was going to come back or be homeless. I burst into tears and told her how I was feeling and I just wanted her to understand me as my mother. She made it known that she didn't care about what I was saying. I sighed, my head hurting from crying endlessly and I turned to run again, but then someone way larger and heavier than me tackled me to the ground. Then they picked me up and she just watched saying she didn't know who it was and she was terrified for me (facepalm, I hate liars) (context: she had a habit of just watching when I was about to get hurt, she rarely ever intervened, she thought that I had deserved it.)
It was her son who had tackled me. He began dragging me back home, my body was scratched, but I kept fighting. She encouraged him to hurt me and hold me still so she could beat me while i screamed for them to let me go. At this point I was tired of her dragging out situations and finding any excuse to harm me instead of just talking to me and correcting my behavior in a gentle and rational way. I was angry. I had no voice, no friends, nowhere to go I would rather have been dead then continue to be treated like regurgitated rat shit everyday.
The noise had caused people to start opening their windows and looking out, but no one knew what to do.
We got to the front door.
she told me to go into her room, her son carried me upstairs and she locked the door.
She told me to remove my clothes and sit down.

I refused to strip so she told me to keep them on. She was red she looked so angry. She grabbed the belt and started hitting me. I was supposed to just sit there. I started to run around the room. She got angrier and started throwing any object she could find. I was getting hit in the head with shoes and such. I pleaded with her to stop, but she was only beginning. I grabbed a blanket to protect my skin, but she just snatched it away and continued hitting me as hard as she could. I screamed and cried. Then she sat me down and told me that if I wanted to be an adult that I needed to fight her like one. I told her, I'm not hitting her and so she hit me first. She punched me hard in the chest, It hurt, but I just took it. Then she started hitting me in the head. She hit me over and over and over. I started to see white. I put my hands up to cover myself, she kept telling me to put them down. She kept hitting me until I fell over onto the bed. My head was pounding so bad with tears running down my face.
We ended up on the other side of the room and I was on the floor now on my back. She then got on top of my and choked me so hard.
I remember her saying that this was my fault. Because of what I had done she had to do this. I just stared into her eyes as I suffocated. By this point I had stopped trying to defend myself.
(Wow dude this is so hard to write...this isn't even half of the shit I endured)
She would always talk to me after she beat the living hell out of me and tell me that she did it because she loved me. I would just sit on the edge of the bed in pain looking down. I would wait until I was released and cry all night.
Fast forward
Covid came.
I was in 11th grade by this time in late 2020. We had moved back to my hometown and it became hard for me to see my boyfriend at the time. We tried our best and everything was going well and then...he cheated on me and I had found out in the worst way. My world turned upside down I became even more depressed than when I was before. I had a job at the time at popeyes. After work I would just come home and lay in my bed for the rest of the night.
All through out high school I was forced to take the hardest classes.
I was failing AP Government in my senior year with a D. My teacher had called my mom and told her that I wasn't turning in any assignments and was in danger of not graduating.
She showed up to my job and humiliated me in front of everyone. She forced me to quit. We got home and talked about it, but of course nothing I had said was of value. I tried explaining what had happened without mentioning the cheating or him and I told her I was depressed.
Of course she didn't believe me or care. I begged her to help me get therapy. She refused.
It took me 5 months to get over that relationship.

Basically I'm 20 now. I started having ptsd nightmares' very fresh after I moved into my dorm.
I became hypersexual and started on dating sites for hookups.
I barely had friends.
She came to my job and humiliated me there and got banned from my campus
She robbed me of over $1,000 and never gave me my documents so when I tried to get my ID i couldn't
I became homeless and started couch surfing with my family. Literally nobody liked me so I spent most of my time alone. I lost my job and dropped out of college.
I was no contact with her and she started tarnishing my reputation to our family making up harsh lies about me and still does to this day.
After moving three different times and struggling to get on my feet, I had no other options.
One day my cousin had kicked me out with all my shit in the living room so I called her.
I had nowhere else to go.
I tried to rekindle our relationship. My mom had a decent amount of money growing up, maybe the same as everyone else, but when I had came back she was rock bottom. We were poorer then we ever had been living in a pretty bad area, at this time I was working at McDonalds so I tried to help in anyway I could.
That's when she started demanding $300 of rent in the very small check that I was getting.
So there I was broke and depressed living on my moms couch. We fought so damn often. This woman is nuts she wouldn't leave me alone it was so bad.
One day she started a fight with me at 12 am I went crazy. I went off on her screaming my my head off she had pushed me to my breaking point.
A few days later she fought me in the kitchen again at 12 am, this time i fought back. She cut me and bruised me bad while I was on the phone with someone I had just met.
One day she told me that I had two weeks to get out of her house
You know that scene in Breaking Bad? The one where Walter comes home toward the end of the show and Skyler turns a knife on him? and Walter Jr. calls the police?
That's how it felt.
Like ultimate betrayal.
that night I stayed up looking for apartments with the small amount of money I had. Luckily I found one and I lied to her to escape her house. (She never expected me to actually leave) My boyfriend now helped me move out (bless his heart if it wasn't for him idk where i'd be... honest to God)
I have an apartment now and I just bought my first car...
I am much happier now, but the stress has been weighing in on me, something is just...off.
I feel like I have a high functioning form of ptsd.
I lay awake often or am very scared to sleep. I often have ptsd dreams still 3 years later. I am very introverted and I get treated pretty bad for it.
Sometimes I find myself contemplating again.
I just don't feel the same about life. I made it, but at the cost of my mental health and wellbeing. I am eternally grateful, but at the sacrifice of who I could've been.
I lost so many years at the hands of a impulsive debilitating pathological liar and dedicated narcisist. I am only 20 years old, but my mind feels like i'm old.
I just feel so lost, so hopeless and constantly depressed very often.
Like what did I even fight for.
I just want to end this with a thought. This really did happen. All of it. None is exaggerated. I have all of the pictures of my scars and bruises, text messages with family members and friends and most importantly traumatic memories that I cannot forget.
I don't want pity. I just want someone to hear my story.
I appear as very quiet especially in the workplace. I am very overlooked and judged. Many people don't like me. Most don't understand and never honestly will. Even at my adult age now. I still mask 99% of who I am. i don't trust easy at all and I barely have any friends.
I'm just hoping one day that this will all have been worth it.
