2024.06.08 23:52 meep1004 The Anger, The Grief, The Pain, The Trauma,....when will all of these go away?

I am mad that for a large part of my life, I was lied to by an organization I completely trusted with my time, money, resources, and energy. Singing "Praise to the Man" for a convicted conman and child rapist and sexual predator makes me feel disgusted every time I hear people testifying his name. It makes me want to puke on the floor.
I am mad that I spent two years selling a fake narrative to convert people to this Church. It turned out the purpose of the mission wasn't to get more converts but to deepen the indoctrination of the youth. This was so they could stay longer, pay more tithing, and keep the sweet money rolling in, ensuring the Church's survival for decades to come. Do you know how much I lost—pieces of my mind—on my mission? Dragging my feet for 7-8 hours a day in the scorching Australian summer sun every fcking day hearing rejections after rejections, almost fainting numerous times because of my conviction in the Gospel. I developed anxiety and perfectionism because of constant rejection, believing I wasn't faithful or strong enough in my faith in some dude who supposedly died 2000 years ago. I suffered from depression and many other mental issues, believing that the mission would be a blessing for my life, only to lose pieces of my sanity, my youth, my money, and my time.
I am mad at the old men sitting comfortably in their red chairs in Salt Lake City, daring to lie with a straight face, showing no remorse or conscience about the deceit they perpetuate. But what infuriates me the most is the people who know nothing about these lies, the innocent TBMs. Those who wholeheartedly believe in the supposed truthfulness of these lies—the sweet and kind elderly who find solace and comfort in this deception. I am enraged for the children born and indoctrinated in this Church, having their worldview and reality poisoned by its stupid doctrines. Knowing this, I'd rather be born in a third-world country, begging on the streets for survival, than being born into a Mormon family and has my brained filled with lies. For the minorities, like LGBTQ individuals or women, who feel lesser, shunned, or experience suicidal thoughts because their self-worth isn't in line with some dudes pretending to play God.
For most of my life, I fit into the Mormon Church mold perfectly—never doing drugs, never smoking, almost never swearing. But now every single time I hear or see anything Mormon, thinking about all the lost time living a life of being duped, I just want to shout FCK YOU, FCK THE CHURCH, FCK RUSSEL M NELSON, FCK JOSEPH SMITH,...
In my 25 years of existence, I've faced painful events such as the loss of loved ones. Yes, the grief from that is painful, but with time, I can accept and move on because death is a natural part of life. I've experienced life's unfairness, like being mistreated in the US because I'm Asian, or faced disappointments like not getting the promotion I wanted at work, or being rejected by my dream school. I had to settle for BYU because I didn't want to rack up student debt. But, man, this betrayal by the Church—this feeling of being lied to—is something else. It's more painful and emotionally taxing than anything I've ever experienced. It's not just a matter of bad luck or life's inherent unfairness; it's deliberate deceit. Being consciously lied to, and watching people make crucial life decisions based on this lie, is absolutely maddening. It's beyond crazy.

2024.06.08 21:49 Witty_Pop_3587 Coconut Week 6: The Movie.

Here we are on the day that started it all, a year ago I did a small review on the Jay and Mikey Show’s first episode: The Boys Go To War.
It wasn’t that good, and had one decent joke but after the series ended, I didn’t do a review for the rest of the summer. Then Dhar shadow announced four series’s all of which I covered along with a few more series.
My style of jokes, recapping, and serialized reviews would improve over time, I say the reviews that cemented my style were Mischief Mikey Season 1, primarily the episode where Mikey lies about a bomb to get out of a test.
But one year later, I have a video that will blow your mind out the water, Girl Finds Out She’s Adopted. This remains Dhar’s only proper feature length video and his longest by far since the Christmas film is a combination of a few other videos.
I doubt Dhar will go through the trouble and budget to make another feature film but one must digress. After a teaser a few days before, the film aired live in two parts during Dhar’s second and last Thanksgiving Special along with Carl Jude’s last video.
It had a big premiere event as well and holds the biggest cast in a Dhar Mann video. They even darkened the video so we know this is a movie.
Without further deliberation, let’s dive in. We start with a candle being lit upon a 15, a mother and father, played by Katherine Norland and Colin Borden go to wake up their kid upon their 15th birthday.
The daughter is named Sabrina and is played by professional cryer, Sofia Serna, funny how only one of those three actors I mentioned still commonly shows up in videos. Apparently these parents want to celebrate the 15th at midnight with a cake.
A bit early for celebration if you ask me, let the kid sleep. Also 16 is a way more important milestone than 15 but Sofia was 15 when this came out so let’s move on. She also shares a birthday with Elon Musk, Henry VIII, and even fucking Markiplier which I just found out when checking her age.
Her rude ass parents crash in with a birthday serenade at midnight, not like I can eat a fucking cake and sleep right after can I? She also has school making this midnight caking even dumber if she’s getting up at seven in the morning.
Mom tells Sabrina that she has something to tell her, which bad timing, I know the parents wanted to tell her on her 15th, but this is just a bad time.
You know what is about to be said but telling your kid she’s adopted at this time at night isn’t good, she isn’t going to get much sleep.
Sabrina laughs it off as the gravity sets in, the truth is clear as day despite the lack of day. She’s in tears already with only three minutes of runtime. Sofia only seems to be the crying girl, crying and being sad isn’t really enough to be a good actor, Sofia has the emotions to bring out a good performance but yelling loudly, crying, and looking sad isn’t enough.
You have to feel the emotions of the moment to truly understand the gravity of this truth bomb, she gets the sadness before a single line trips her into anger without much buildup. Is it wrong for me to hate on a child actor? No, because I am a year younger than her.
The parents refuse to let her meet her biological parents as Crying Girl dips into anger, I get not wanting to let her meet them, but telling her that parents are criminals, yeah they are big shock.
If they just told her that her bio parents were criminals and couldn’t raise her, we wouldn’t have a movie now would we? And Dad saying “We didn’t lie, we just didn’t tell you” isn’t really helping either.
She goes into packing her shit as Colin sounds pissed, Kathrine also gives a great performance which I’ll go into later. Crying Girl is all about how they don’t share blood and Dad retorts with the message that family doesn’t require blood but love.
Am I annoyed this movie reused a message Dhar had used multiple times when this came out? Yes, yes I am. Crying Girl is trying to move out with no information as Mon tries her best to kill the conflict.
Crying Girl screams for them to get out, I don’t imagine this kind of reaction to adoption reveal but this is a movie so I’ll relax on that front.
We also see that the cake eating, reveal, and shouting match took up all of 20 minutes on the dot as she slams the picture of her parents dramatically she can put it back up at the end.
She posts to her instagram that she feels alone before getting a call from her Token Black Friend played by Brianni Walker. Weird seeing her here along with Colin after both were apart the protests but hey one must see some nostalgia from this older Dhar era.
Crying Girl tells Token Black Friend that she’s already sent in a DNA despite it still being the same night and we can’t just have a movie of her waiting six weeks. Token Black suggests she search her attic for potential papers as Token Black Friend hangs up.
It’s time for some sneaking, so it’s actually time for false tension baby! How she is able to get into the loud ass freaking attic without waking her people that adopted her up is beyond me.
Mom tries to go and talk things out so the conflict is over but is stopped by Dad. I know I’ve done nothing but give Kathrine Norland shit for the past year but honestly the real reason was her characters’ writing.
She does an amazing job here as she grapples with the emotions as the middle ground of the conflict. I have more to say later so let’s head back to the attic.
With Crying Girl making a bunch of noise with an old toy, we cut to see the parents immediately asleep following that conversation we just saw second ago.
Crying Girl finally strikes gold with a folder labeled “Important Documents” and a book with a hidden compartment with some old childhood pictures reminding her of the message.
Soon she finds the old slip she’s looking for, the papers are clear as day as we cut to day. Token Black Friend is shown the birth certificates.
It appears Crying Girl has found her father only 17 minutes in, Darius Mulgannon, with a name like that can you be surprised he’s in prison? Token Black loudly yells about him being in jail which get prepared for that joke being run into the ground.
The bio mom’s name is Candy Johnson as Token Black Friend loudly yells that she’s going to jail as a teacher walks by. He’s played by Sean Harris as they pretend to be acting which he buys somehow. There was a play last week as apparently he’s trying to get another play up and running already.
Talk about short rehearsal times between shows, but Dhar knows nothing of high school theater. Crying Girl’s plan to get into said prison is simple, emotional manipulation.
She spots a prison guard with his family and he’s played by Johnnie Mack. So she goes into a crying mood again as she creates a story about visiting her dad every year and being unable as her mom is sick.
This story works perfectly so I guess this guard is newly employed. Darius is a little shocked to learn his kid is visiting as it’s clear he’s probably been around as we later learn.
Darius is played by Daniel Salas, and he’s the best character probably because he doesn’t give two shits about the plot. Crying Girl tries to get the info out of him as Darius’s first reaction is that kid’s come by to ask for money from this imprisoned guy.
Crying Girl hoped he be excited as this harden criminal was expected to be a doting father. We then learn that the bio mom used a fake name on the birth certificate to avoid law enforcement.
Why didn’t Darius use a pseudonym either as he makes it clear that this search isn’t going to end well as her birth mom didn’t want her. Asking this guy who’s been locked up for years for info is crazy but thankfully she has an older sister.
With the name Bella, she does the easy thing that one is to do in this situation, find her personal address and info online. All the while woman who adopted her tries to leave some food.
Who learn Thanksgiving is tomorrow as the timeline is really weird. So it starts at midnight on Crying Girl’s 15th birthday, that night she finds her birth certificate and the following morning she says she visiting her dad later implying that it’s the same day.
In America we often have Thanksgiving break starting in the day before Thanksgiving meaning it makes no sense why she be at school the same day she visits her dad and finds out the truth about her adoption.
We are only half way done as Crying Girl just happens upon her sister’s address. Can I get a… bullshit?
You can’t just go tip tap typing and find an address without deep diving straight into the dark web. With plenty of viruses to boot, Token Black Friend puts the idea into Crying Girl’s head that bio mom gave her up and kept her sister.
Did she forget that her mother is a harden criminal with multiple names and false identities? Why assume she has a child with her? Woman who adopted her gets her name changed in her phone as Crying Girl is doubling down on this hunt.
Token Black Friend joins in on how this doesn’t seem like a good idea as Crying Girl literally just rolls up upon this mansion with no plan or way to get in legally.
She’s stumbling over her words, over correcting, and trying to come up with a story to get the maid to let her in. She didn’t plan for this? Well I get her not knowing her sister is an adult as we meet her fiancé. He doesn’t matter.
We eventually see Sister’s Woman who adopted her, IE: Her mom. As we get a pan shot, Sister’s Mom should know about her bullshit as she actually does. Yeah, she isn’t an idiot.
Once fiancé is gone, she goes into question her. Sister’s Mom is played by regular Amanda Klein as Sister is played by newcomer Kelsey Lee Smith. To my knowledge is her only role in Dhar Mann, correct me if I’m wrong but it feels weird to see a newcomer who never shows up again to get such an important role.
Back to chewing out the child, she goes into the questioning before throwing her out without answering a question. She’s caught in the lie as Sister shows up and exposes her.
Crying Girl does what she does best and cries before revealing the familial connection, she believes Sister’s mom is her mom despite criminal record with fake names and mansion ownership not really lining up.
Fiancé is calling for her as Sister pulls her out, we learn what I mentioned earlier as Sister feels a little guilty for kicking her out.
Sister herself was adopted and really doesn’t want her fiancé to know for some reason. She’s also expecting a child by now as Crying Girl tries to mention how she’s lying to her lover but she’s a hypocrite who gets called out.
Apparently Bio Mom visited only to ask for money, and she makes it clear that it isn’t a good idea despite giving her the address. Her real name is Sasha Whitlock, and is the third person to tell her that this isn’t a good idea.
We also learn that she’s been gone from her home all day as Man who adopted her downplays how their kid is missing. I’m with Woman who adopted her on this situation, if your kid is out of the house in the middle of metropolitan California then I’d be freaking out too.
Kathrine doesn’t get enough credit for this performance, Colin does great with what he’s given but Kathrine really shows the emotions of a parent in distress. For Dhar’s most loyal actress, you think he give her better roles.
I don’t respect Kathrine as a person for siding with Dhar, but I won’t say she isn’t a great actress.
So Crying Girl visits skid row and knocks only to be asked if she has drugs. Birth Mom is played by Nerisa Tedesco who decided to play an evil bio mom before playing all those evil foster mom roles.
This typecast of Dhar’s is kinda rude, why does Nerisa play all these terrible mom roles? I guess it’s because she looks mean and a little nasty, talk about dick move.
It turns out we’ve wasted the past 40 minutes searching for this woman as she’s demeaning, rude, likes oranges, etc.
Bio mom is really stupid, guess it’s from all the drugs since she asks if this child is a cop, or if she has pills, and pronounced Target as “Tar-Je” then she just up and leaves Crying Girl alone and without a phone.
Gee I wonder what message Crying Girl realizes while alone with thoughts. We cut back to the people who adopted her as we get a classy “we can’t declare her missing because it hasn’t been 24 hours”
I swear man who adopted her is far too nonchalant for this kind of situation. Cut back to Crying Girl as her bio mom returns high, she questions Crying Girl if she ate her orange despite eating it in an earlier scene.
Bio mom shuts her down again and outright admits to giving her up for adoption. Wow Dhar, I see a message you already have shown in less than ten minutes took 50 minutes here, I’m happy to have wasted my time here.
So Crying Girl decides to get her phone back as woman who adopted her is calling. So she leaves, not before changing her name back to mom in the phone.
We cut back to home as this is kinda Dad’s fault, had he just let Mom tell her the truth about her criminal parents none of this could have happened!
This entire film could have been avoided! I’ve wasted far more than an hour here typing this damn review! Whatever, Crying girl returns to apologize and repeat the message about family not calling just for blood, it calls for SACRIFICE!
We also see Sister went through an offscreen arc about accepting your past or something and explaining how she told her fiancé about said past.
Of course he was understanding, what were you expecting? She welcomed her to visit since she told her not it come back in that earlier scene which I just skipped over.
They invite her to have some dinner with some classy hospitality, Crying Girl is happy and content so she posts a new photo to her story showing how we all went full circle.
Oh and she puts her family picture back up because it wouldn’t be a share adoption video without it.
We see Token Black Friend being happy upon seeing the story as our time together comes to an end. Or does it?
Because we get three mid credit scene based on theee off hand lines, one I mentioned and one I didn’t.
First is of Ayden Mekus visiting Darius and asking for money just to get laughed at, a lot of stupid characters in this story.
Second is bio mom getting her already eaten orange eaten by her partner because funny?
Third is Token Black at her birthday guess her presents, how her family hasn’t realized she’s been looking in the attic by now is beyond me.
Then it’s over, well I went into this with not much expectations and came out with none of them filled. Some of the acting is kinda good, but a few good or decent performances isn’t enough to save bad writing.
Not to mention very little thought went into the writing process, the plot has several opportunities to stop in its tracks so they steer clear of those smarter and more level headed options.
I get avoided revealing her bio parents didn’t want her, but just say they are criminals who couldn’t raise her. The fundamentals of the plot and the setup we are given would have to be drastically different since this film is just a longer version of the family isn’t about blood but love message.
So I must do what I always do, what is my final score to this film which has a shit title. After much thought, I have this rating, 3/10. There’s not much you can expect from a film that refuses to take the smart option and forces itself to continue.
Well that’s it, one year of celebratory reviews in a row. I’m shocked what was to be a one off has blown out into a trend. Not to mention to common use of Fart Bucket as a nickname has gotten so popular even Dhar used it in a short.
As for the road ahead, well I might take a break, I’m not quitting at all but after six straight reviews it probably be for the best to let the over saturation of reviews die down.
I want to thank you for reading these reviews for the past years and for participating in the poll. Leave your thoughts on this review and the video in the comments, and Thank you.

Directors at the Box Office: Ang Lee

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Ang Lee's turn.
Lee's father, a respect principal, was hoping that his son would become a professor. But he was disappointed when his son failed his high school exam twice, forcing him to attend a less privileged university. Seeing Ingmar Bergman's film The Virgin Spring was a formative experience for him. After finishing his mandatory military service, he moved to the United States to complete his studies. He wanted to become an actor, but his struggle with English made him move into directing. After finally meeting a few contacts in the industry, he started working as a director.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

Pushing Hands (1991)

His directorial debut. It stars Sihung Lung, Lai Wang, Bo Z. Wang, Deb Snyder and Haan Lee. It follows a Chinese tai chi master living in New York, who struggles to find his place in the world. The film shows the contrast between traditional Chinese ideas of Confucian relationships within a family and the much more informal Western emphasis on the individual.
Lee graduated from New York University Tisch School of the Arts in 1984, but had failed to find career opportunities since, working almost full-time as a house-father. During the intermediate six years, he became interested in martial arts, specifically tai chi, after reading the wuxia novel Jianghu qixia zhuan. This motivated him to write a screenplay, which brought the attention of Hsu Li-kong, a recently promoted senior manager in a major studio who had a strong interest in Lee's unique style and freshness. He invited Lee to make his directorial debut.
It had a very limited release, and it was reported that it made just $152,322 domestically. But it received acclaim in the United States and Taiwan. And that allowed Lee to finally get a chance to expand his horizon.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $152,322.
  • Worldwide gross: $152,322.

The Wedding Banquet (2023)

"You are cordially invited to a wedding where everybody wants to kiss the bride... except the groom."
His second film. The film stars Gua Ah-leh, Lung Sihung, May Chin, Winston Chao and Mitchell Lichtenstein. The story concerns a bisexual Taiwanese immigrant man who marries a mainland Chinese woman to placate his parents and get her a green card. His plan backfires when his parents arrive in the United States to plan his wedding banquet and he has to hide the truth of his gay partner.
Neil Peng approached Lee with the idea in 1986 by revealing to Lee that one of their mutual friends had moved to the United States and was in a same-sex relationship without the knowledge of the man's parents. Lee and Peng began writing the screenplay two years later and were soon joined by James Schamus. Schamus wrote that the film was "first drafted in Chinese, then translated into English, re-written in English, translated back into Chinese, and eventually subtitled in Chinese and English and a dozen other languages."
The film was critically acclaimed, and became a sleeper hit, earning $23.6 million against a budget of just $1 million. Lee was on the rise.
  • Budget: $1,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $6,933,459.
  • Worldwide gross: $23,633,459.

Eat Drink Man Woman (1994)

"It's hard to tell where sex stops and food begins."
His third film. It stars Sihung Lung, Wang Yu-wen, Wu Chien-lien, and Yang Kuei-mei. It follows four members of the Zhu family as they navigate the challenges of love, life, tradition and family. This film deals with the transition from tradition to modernity. It is Lee's first (and to date, only film) to be shot entirely in his native Taiwan.
Like his previous films, another critical and commercial success. Lee quickly made himself a household name.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $7,294,403.
  • Worldwide gross: $24,294,403.

Sense and Sensibility (1995)

"Lose your heart and come to your senses."
His fourth film. Based on the novel by Jane Austen, and it stars Emma Thompson (who also wrote the screenplay), Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman. The story follows the Dashwood sisters, members of a wealthy English family of landed gentry, as they must deal with circumstances of sudden destitution. They are forced to seek financial security through marriage.
In 1989, producer Lindsay Doran suggested adapting the novel to her colleagues. She was a lifelong fan of the novel, and vowed to make a film adaptation if she ever made it into the industry. Looking for a writer, Doran read screenplays by English and American writers until she came across a series of comedic skits, often in period settings, that actress Emma Thompson had written and decided that that was the direction she wanted for the film. As they were working on the film Dead Again, Doran hired Thompson to write the film, even though she never wrote a feature-length film before.
Thompson spent five years writing and revising the screenplay, both during and between shooting other films. Believing the novel's language to be "far more arcane than in [Austen's] later books," Thompson sought to simplify the dialogue while retaining the "elegance and wit of the original." Despite Doran's confidence, studios were reluctant to pick up the film, as Thompson never wrote a film. Columbia Pictures executive Amy Pascal supported Thompson's work and agreed to sign as the producer and distributor.
In 1993, Lee was hired to direct, basically for his work in The Wedding Banquet. Even though he was not familiar with Jane Austen, Doran felt that Lee's films, which depicted complex family relationships amidst a social comedy context, were a good fit with Austen's storylines. Viewing it as a "director for hire" job, Lee spent six months in preparing for the film, as it would have his largest budget ($16 million) by that point. Doran and Columbia asked Thompson to play Elinor herself.
The film received widespread critical acclaim, and was included on more than a hundred top-ten of the year lists, as well as one of the best Austen adaptations. It was a huge box office hit, earning $134 million worldwide. It received 7 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress. Thompson won Best Adapted Screenplay, making her the only person to have won an Oscar for both her writing and acting (she won Best Actress two years prior). However, Lee was not nominated for Best Director, a decision that was criticized by many as Hollywood's racism against Lee and Chinese cinema in general. Lee sought to avoid turning his omission into a scandal and specifically asked the Taiwan state media not to make it a "national issue", explaining that he endured more pressure when forced to act as his country's representative.
  • Budget: $16,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $43,182,776.
  • Worldwide gross: $134,582,776.

The Ice Storm (1997)

"The American Dream was over. But the hangover was just beginning."
His fifth film. Based on the novel by Rick Moody, it stars Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood, Katie Holmes, Glenn Fitzgerald, Jamey Sheridan and Sigourney Weaver. Set during Thanksgiving 1973, it follows two dysfunctional New Canaan, Connecticut, upper-class families who are trying to deal with tumultuous social changes of the early 1970s, and their escapism through alcohol, adultery and sexual experimentation.
The film ended Lee's winning streak at the box office, but it was still critically acclaimed.
  • Budget: $18,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,038,061.
  • Worldwide gross: $16,011,975.

Ride with the Devil (1999)

"In a no-man's land between North and South, you didn't fight for the blue or grey, you fought for your friends and your family."
His sixth film. Based on the novel Woe to Live On by Daniel Woodrell, it stars Tobey Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, Jeffrey Wright, Jewel, Simon Baker, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, James Caviezel, Thomas Guiry and Jonathan Brandis. Set during the American Civil War, it follows a group of men who join the First Missouri Irregulars, also known as the Bushwhackers — guerrilla units loyal to pro-Confederacy units of the state — and their war against Northern Jayhawkers allied with the Union army.
Despite commanding a $38 million budget, the film had a very limited three-day run, making less than $1 million. It also received mixed reviews from critics.
  • Budget: $38,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $635,096.
  • Worldwide gross: $635,096.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

"A timeless story of strength, secrets, and two warriors who would never surrender."
His seventh film. Based on the Chinese novel serialized between 1941 and 1942 by Wang Dulu, it stars Chow Yun-fat, Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi, and Chang Chen. Master Li Mu Bai, a warrior, is about to retire and gives his sword to his lover Yu Shu Lien to keep it safe. However, the sword is stolen and now an embittered Li embarks on a mission to find it.
The stunt work was mostly performed by the actors themselves and Ang Lee stated in an interview that computers were used "only to remove the safety wires that held the actors" aloft. "Most of the time you can see their faces," he added. "That's really them in the trees." The film specifically targeted Western audiences rather than the domestic audiences who were already used to Wuxia films. As a result, high-quality English subtitles were needed. Ang Lee, who was educated in the West, personally edited the subtitles to ensure they were satisfactory for Western audiences.
Whatever were the expectations for this, the film exceeded them by a large margin. After a limited release, it earned $8 million in its first wide domestic opening weekend. But the crazy thing was how insane were its legs; it didn't hit a sub $4 million weekend until its 12th wide weekend, and it even increased from some weekends. It closed with a colossal $128 million domestically, becoming the highest foreign-language film in United States, a record it still keeps, and it's twice as much as the second place, Life Is Beautiful. Worldwide, it earned $213.9 million worldwide, becoming a worldwide phenomenon and Lee's highest grossing film.
The film was widely acclaimed across the world, hailed as one of the greatest films of the century. The film led to a boost in popularity of Chinese wuxia films in the Western world, where they were previously little known, and led to films such as Hero and House of Flying Daggers, both directed by Zhang Yimou, being marketed towards Western audiences. It received 10 Oscar nominations (the most for a foreign film), including Best Picture and Best Director for Lee. It won four: Best Foreign Language Film, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography. To this day, one of the most iconic foreign titles. Lee made history.
  • Budget: $17,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $128,530,421.
  • Worldwide gross: $213,978,518.

Hulk (2003)

"Unleash the fury."
His eighth film. Based on the Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, it stars Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Sam Elliott, Josh Lucas, and Nick Nolte. The film explores Bruce Banner's origins. After a lab accident involving gamma radiation, he transforms into a giant green-skinned humanoid with superhuman strength known as the Hulk whenever stressed or emotionally provoked. The United States military pursues him, and he clashes with his biological father, who has dark plans for his son.
Since 1990, Avi Arad and Gale Ann Hurd were working on a Hulk film, but Universal was struggling in finding the right script. Hurd brought her husband Jonathan Hensleigh as co-producer the following year, and Universal hired Industrial Light & Magic to create the Hulk with computer-generated imagery. Joe Johnston was hired as director, but he eventually left to work on another film, while Zak Penn was brought to rewrite. Hensleigh subsequently rewrote the script with J. J. Abrams. Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski were also brought on board to rewrite, with Hensleigh deciding to direct the film himself despite not having directed before. By 1998, Universal put the film on hiatus due to its escalating $100 million budget and worries of Hensleigh directing his first film. $20 million was already spent on script development, computer animation, and prosthetics work. Hensleigh immediately went to rewrite the script to reduce the budget.
In 2001, Lee and his colleague James Schamus signed for the project, after Lee chose not to direct Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. He was dissatisfied with the script and commissioned Schamus for a rewrite, merging Banner's father with the Absorbing Man. Lee cited influences from King Kong, Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde, Beauty and the Beast, Faust, and Greek mythology to interpret the story. Schamus said he had found the storyline that introduced Brian Banner, allowing Lee to write a drama that again explored father-son themes. Schamus admitted to feeling pressure after the release of Spider-Man.
Eric Bana commented that the shoot was "Ridiculously serious... a silent set, morbid in a lot of ways." Lee told him that he was shooting a Greek tragedy, and that he would be making a "whole other movie" about the Hulk at Industrial Light & Magic. An example of Lee's arthouse approach to the film was taking Bana to watch a bare-knuckle boxing match. Bana would later disfavorably reflect on his experience making the film as the majority of the time he was working indoors while the rest of the cast interacted with a CGI recreation of the Hulk, somewhat limiting his screen time.
After the colossal success of Spider-Man, Universal mounted an extensive marketing campaign, which also highlighted Ang Lee's involvement. The film opened with a huge $62.1 million in its first weekend, the biggest June debut and the 16th biggest ever. However, the film had absolutely no legs at the box office. In its second weekend, it dropped a colossal 69.7%, which was the biggest for a film that opened above $20 million. In its third weekend, it fell another steep 56.3% and it kept falling until it left theaters, becoming the largest opener not to earn $150 million. It closed with $132 million domestically and $245 million worldwide. Good enough to be the 15th highest grossing film of the year and Lee's highest grossing film, but not a hit given its $137 million budget.
If Spider-Man was an immediate crowd-pleaser, Hulk was the exact opposite. It received polarizing reviews; while its ambition and style was praised, a lot criticized its CGI and very limited action ("too much talking and not enough smashing"). In subsequent years, some have praised the film as an ambitious film that deviated from the superhero formula, although it's still not widely considered as a beloved film. Lee admitted the challenges of the film, but stood proud of the film and its fans.
  • Budget: $137,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $132,177,234.
  • Worldwide gross: $245,285,165.

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

"Love is a force of nature."
His ninth film. Based on the short story by Annie Proulx, it stars Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams and Randy Quaid. Its plot depicts the complex romantic relationship between two American cowboys, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, in the American West from 1963 to 1983.
Screenwriter Diana Ossana discovered Annie Proulx's short story in October 1997, just days after its publication. She convinced writing partner Larry McMurtry to read it, who thought it was a "masterpiece". The pair asked Proulx if they could adapt it into a film screenplay; although she did not think that the story would work as a film, she agreed. The big challenge wasn't the script, it was about getting the film made in the first place.
Gus Van Sant attempted to make the film, hoping to cast Matt Damon and Joaquin Phoenix as Ennis and Jack, respectively. He also considered Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Ryan Phillippe and Josh Hartnett. Damon, who previously worked with Van Sant on Good Will Hunting, told the director, "Gus, I did a gay movie (The Talented Mr. Ripley), then a cowboy movie (All the Pretty Horses). I can't follow it up with a gay-cowboy movie!"
James Schamus, who was now the CEO of Focus Features, optioned the film rights in 2001. Pedro Almodovar was approached, but he felt he couldn't get his artistic freedom respected. At Ossana's request, Schamus showed the story and screenplay to Lee. Lee decided instead to make Hulk, and that film's experience left him exhausted, to the point that he considered retiring. When he was offered Brokeback, he changed his mind and agreed to direct. He was particularly drawn to the authentic rural American life and repression depicted in the story.
Ossana and McMurty suggested Heath Ledger, but the film studio thought he was not masculine enough. Regardless, Ledger got the script, who thought it was "beautiful" and put himself forward. Gyllenhaal reacted to the script positively and signed on for the role; he also did not want to miss the opportunity working with Lee and friend Ledger. Lee met with Mark Wahlberg for a role in the film, but Wahlberg declined as he was "creeped out" by the script. Gyllenhaal admired Ledger and described him as "way beyond his years as a human". Other actors were considered for the leads but Lee said they were too afraid to take on the roles.
You have to consider that while the world progressed a lot in the past years, 2005 was a very different era, so a film like Brokeback Mountain had a tough hill to climb. Some countries refused to play the film, while others censored it. LGBT films weren't big at the time, so it felt like there wouldn't be a big audience here.
And they were proven wrong.
The film debuted with $547,425 in 5 theaters, a huge $109,485 per-theater average. It had fantastic legs, eventually closing with a huge $83 million domestically. But the big surprise is that it was bigger overseas; it made $178 million worldwide, becoming Focus Features' highest grossing film. The film received universal acclaim on its release, touted as one of the greatest films of the century. It received 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It won three: Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Original Score. In a shocking decision, it lost Best Picture to Crash, a decision that has been reviled ever since. We'd like to say it's a polarizing decision... but let's face it, there are no Crash fans nowadays. Or at least, none that prefer that to Brokeback.
But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter; Brokeback may not have won the Oscar, but it won over the general public.
It wasn't the first LGBT film, not even close. But it might have been the most influential and a huge landmark.
  • Budget: $14,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $83,043,761.
  • Worldwide gross: $178,064,141.

Lust, Caution (2007)

"The trap is set."
His tenth film. Based on the novella by Eileen Chang, it stars Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Tang Wei, Anupam Kher, Joan Chen, Wang Leehom and Shyam Pathak. The film is set in Hong Kong in 1938 and in Shanghai in 1942, when the city was occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army and ruled by the puppet government led by Wang Jingwei. The film depicts a group of Chinese university students from The University of Hong Kong who plot to assassinate a high-ranking special agent and recruiter working for the puppet government by luring him into a honey trap.
The actors who played university classmates, spent six months of preproduction in Hong Kong just to get into character and understand the period before filming. During this period the group of actors, including Tang Wei and Wang Leehom became very close friends. Both Tang Wei and Tony Leung Chiu-wai were asked whether the sex scenes in the movie were unsimulated. Tang Wei responded, "In the movie, we are just doing what we should do to have a baby." As for Tony Leung, he responded, "When the bodies collide with each other, it is indeed like a fake show!" The film was rated NC-17 in North America for its explicit sex scenes, and Lee made it clear he would not re-cut the film. Despite that, the version released in China was cut by about seven minutes (by Lee himself) to make it suitable for younger audiences, since China has no rating system.
The film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim. Due to the rating, it only earned $4 million domestically. But it was much bigger overseas, where it earned $67 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing NC-17 film (a record it still keeps).
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $4,604,982.
  • Worldwide gross: $67,091,915.

Taking Woodstock (2009)

"Take the trip."
His 11th film. Based on the memoir by Elliot Tiber and Tom Monte, it stars Demetri Martin, Paul Dano, Dan Fogler, Henry Goodman, Jonathan Groff, Emile Hirsch, Eugene Levy, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Imelda Staunton and Liev Schreiber. Elliot's parents own a motel in Catskills, New York. To overcome the family's financial crisis, Elliot offers the organisers of the Woodstock music and art festival boarding and lodging in the motel.
The film received mixed reviews, and bombed at the box office.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $7,460,204.
  • Worldwide gross: $9,975,737.

Life of Pi (2012)

"Don't lose hope."
His 12th film. Based on the novel by Yann Martel, it stars Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Rafe Spall, Gérard Depardieu and Adil Hussain. The storyline revolves around two survivors of a shipwreck who are on a lifeboat stranded in the Pacific Ocean for 227 days. One is a sixteen-year-old Indian boy named Pi Patel and the other is a ferocious Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.
Fox 2000 Pictures executive Elizabeth Gabler acquired the film rights in February 2003. M. Night Shyamalan was attached to direct, and he was expected to film it after The Village. But he dropped to instead make Lady in the Water, "I was hesitant [to direct] because the book has kind of a twist ending. And I was concerned that as soon as you put my name on it, everybody would have a different experience." Other directors considered were Alfonso Cuarón and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, both of which declined.
In 2009, Lee was hired, but the film was stuck in development hell when he asked for a $120 million budget. But the revival of 3-D motivated Fox in greenlighting the film under Lee's terms. As Lee started casting, one of the actors involved was Tobey Maguire, who would play a reporter. But it was later reported that Lee chose to cut his scenes, feeling he wanted to emphasize an entirely international cast. His scenes were re-shot with Rafe Spall.
Fox mounted an extensive marketing campaign selling the film as "the next Avatar" in terms of visuals and 3-D. And it fucking killed it at the box office. It earned $124.9 million domestically, which was considered a soft performance. But the real money was in the rest of the world; the film broke records in countries like China, United Kingdom, India and Mexico. It earned a colossal $609 million worldwide, easily becoming Lee's highest grossing film. An absolutely insane performance.
The film also received critical acclaim, praised for its CGI and 3-D. It received 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. And it won four: Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Original Score, and then Lee himself won his second Oscar for Best Director, becoming the first Asian to win the award twice. And just like that, he cemented himself as one of the greatest filmmakers of our era. And here's how he celebrated it; going to In-N-Out.
  • Budget: $120,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $124,987,023.
  • Worldwide gross: $609,016,565.

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016)

"To walk the path of a hero, you have to see how it all began."
His 13th film. Based on the novel by Ben Fountain, it stars Joe Alwyn, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel, Steve Martin, and Chris Tucker. After a horrifying battle in Iraq, Private Billy Lynn and his fellow comrades are brought home for a victory tour. Soon, he recollects the harsh realities of the war and struggles to cope with life.
The film used an unprecedented shooting and projection frame rate of 120 frames per second in 3D at 4K UHD resolution, which Lee terms the "whole shebang". It is the first feature film ever to be shot in such a high frame rate, over twice the previous record (Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, shot at 48 fps) and five times the standard speed of 24 fps. Lee undertook such a bold step after reading the book since he wanted the film to be an "immersive" and "realistic" experience of the reality and emotional journey of soldiers.
Due to the complexity involved in shooting at a very high frame rate, Lee could not afford to do many takes even for a single scene. Every shot was difficult and at the same time precious. He would rehearse every scene beforehand and would conduct regular morning meetings with the key crew members to highlight things they needed to be alert on. Shooting close-up shots in 3D with such high resolution meant the cast could not wear make-up and could not deliver less-than-authentic performances. Since no make-up was allowed, make-up artist Luisa Abel spent months of preparation on their skin tones. Throughout filming, the production team had to rethink everything, including different approaches to lighting as the camera needed extra lights due to the higher frame rates.
Due to the complexity of the film's unprecedented high frame rate and the cost of installing equipment capable of projecting the film in its intended format, only five theaters globally were equipped to show it at its highest resolution and maximum frame rate: two in the United States (one at a theater in New York City's AMC Lincoln Square where the film had its world premiere and the other in Los Angeles's the ArcLight Hollywood), and one theater each in Taipei, Beijing, and Shanghai.
The film opened in 2 theaters (New York City's AMC Lincoln Square and Los Angeles's the ArcLight Hollywood's Cinerama Dome), which were the only ones in the country to play the film at 120fps and the ticket prices at both locations running $20 or higher. It made a pretty great $114,129, which made for a fantastic $57,064 per-theater average (the third best of the year). But when it hit wide release, the film was dead on arrival. It made just $901,062 in 1,176 theaters, which was one of the worst wide debuts ever. And then, despite having its second weekend fall on Thanksgiving, it collapsed by 77.3%. It closed after just 3 weeks with only $1.7 million domestically. It fared better overseas, where China made colossal $23.7 million. Worldwide, it made just $30.9 million, making it a box office flop. Reviews were mixed, and people were polarized over the high-frame rate; some deemed it immersive and impressive, while others found it distracting and flat.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $1,738,477.
  • Worldwide gross: $30,930,984.

Gemini Man (2019)

"Who will save you from yourself?"
His 14th film. It stars Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen and Benedict Wong. The film follows a retiring Force Recon Marine scout sniper who is targeted by a much younger clone of himself while on the run from a corrupt private military company.
In 1997, Darren Lemke sold his pitch for Gemini Man after impressing Don Murphy with an unproduced spec script. Warner Bros. Pictures pursued the project, but Walt Disney Pictures ultimately won out and Tony Scott would become attached to direct. Complications soon arose when the studio were planning how to make the film. The producers toyed with the idea of an actor play both roles through the use of visual effects, but Scott moved on from the film before any progress could be made.
The project was stuck in development hell, and saw many actors considered, such as Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Chris O'Donnell, Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery, Clint Eastwood and Jon Voight. Many directors were also considered, before Lee finally signed in 2017, with Smith also joining. Like his previous film, the film was shot digitally at an extra-high frame rate of 120 frames per second (fps), modified for 3D, this time on modified ARRI Alexa cameras mounted on STEREOTEC 3D Rigs.
Again, due to the requirements needed, only 14 theaters in North America could show the film at a 120fps 2K 3D high-frame rate (two in Los Angeles, two in Chicago, and one each in Miami, Orlando, New Orleans, Denver, New York, San Francisco, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Baltimore and Houston). Even then, the film was shot at 120fps 4K 3D, which means no theater showed its intended vision. Lee said that 120fps 2K 3D felt like the necessary avenue to make “Junior,” Smith’s digital avatar, a soulful character who could also appear to beat the living crap out of a real actor in the film’s many fight sequences.
The film received negative reviews, particularly for its CGI and story. And like his previous film, the high-frame rate received polarizing reactions. Despite the presence of a big star like Will Smith, the film flopped with just $173 million worldwide, against its $138 million budget, and losing an estimated $111 million for Paramount. Lee's attempt at high-frame rate was just not clicking with the public.
  • Budget: $138,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $48,546,770.
  • Worldwide gross: $173,469,516.

The Future

His next film, as confirmed in November 2022, is a Bruce Lee biopic. The lead actor will be Mason Lee, Ang's son. And he suggested he's not done with the 120fps high-frame rate, claiming he would continue using it in his next film for action sequences.

Across 14 films, he has made $1,727,122,572 worldwide. That's $123,365,898 per film.

The Verdict

Despite his past two films getting two of the worst reviews in his career, Lee has proved himself to be a very reliable director.
Something impressive about him is the versatility in his resume. A comic book film, a survival film, a LGBT film, a wuxia film, a sci-fi film, a post-war film, a Jane Austen film, a noir film, an erotic NC-17 thriller, a Western, and some romantic comedies. Even if some don't fully work, there's still some good and interesting aspects in him. And of course, the first Asian director to win 2 Oscars for Best Director. So if he wants to continue with the controversial 120fps high-frame rate, let him cook. Hopefully in more and more theaters worldwide.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Zack Snyder. Oh boy. This is where the fun begins.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... John McTiernan and Rob Reiner. Whaaaaat? Two posts for the price of one? You're welcome! It was a very tight race, and it was tough to choose one or the other. The former has the dishonor of going to director jail and real jail, while the latter had an incredible run before completely crashing with one of Roger Ebert's most hated films.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
June 10-16 Zack Snyder RIP Inbox.
June 17-23 Tony Scott Action films have not been the same ever since his death.
June 24-30 Roland Emmerich The King of disaster films.
July 1-7 John McTiernan & Rob Reiner The rise and fall of two once-great directors.
Who should be next after McTiernan and Reiner? That's up to you.

2024.06.08 20:53 cowzilla3 The Great Spice Off: Maggard Razors - Definitely a Maggard Old Spice Dupe. Not Just Some Other Soap I Wrote That On Tape With.

Hello and welcome to the 34th installment of The Great Spice Off! What is The Great Spice Off?
I love the scent of Old Spice, so much so that it's the only aftershave I use as I don't really feel a need to splash anything else on. But, as we all know, Old Spice no longer makes shaving soap. They do still make a cream but that's hardly a great soap and it doesn't actually smell like Old Spice. As such my plan is to test out all the Old Spice options that are out there on as many bases as possible both to try out a variety of bases from different soapmakers and to report back to you on who really nails the scent.
I'll be shaving three times with each soap, using a variety of brushes and razors, and blades. Yes, I know that means it won't be exactly scientific but this is going to take a while and I want to use all my other shit too. Soaps will be rated on a few factors and given points from 1-5 for each.

Maggard Razors - Definitely a Maggard Old Spice Dupe. Not Just Some Other Soap I Wrote That On Tape With.

Today is finally the day! The day we review the long-awaited Maggard Razors Old Spice dupe. I can't tell you how many people have been begging me to review Definitely a "Maggard Old Spice Dupe. Not Just Some Other Soap I Wrote That On Tape With.", known throughout the wetshaving community as MOSDNJSOSIWTOTW. First the obvious question: why haven't I reviewed one of the longest-running, hightly-recommended dupes out there from the biggest name in wet shaving? It just never felt like the right time, you know? But as we're coming to the end of The Great Spice Off I knew I had to finally do it. Pull the trigger on this, the most legendary of all Old Spice dupes. So here we finally are, reviewing what many have told me is the greatest Old Spice soap ever made.
I feel silly going into details about Maggard Razors considering if you don't know who they are you're probably a mad person doing mad person things like making up an entire soap and spending a chunk of time writing a review on it. However, we'll give the high level stuff here. Maggard Razors is the wet shaving store that all the best west shavers shop at. If you're not shopping at Maggard you're not shopping. Founded in 2012, which in wet shaving business years means they are now celebrating their 100th anniversary, by Brad and Casie Maggard, Maggard Razors was, for a long time, one of the few online retailers where you could even pick up a variety of artisan shaving products. Now, as the community (industry?) has expanded they're still a leader in the space. Maggard also hosts the Maggard Meet Up, which is the biggest wet shaving meet up in the world as stated by the Guiness Book of World Records if they hadn't hung up on me when I asked them to verify it laughing and asking, "Wait, people really get together shave?" Point being, Maggard Razors is legit.
Now, let's discuss the name here. Brad has quite the sense of humor and this name is clearly an in joke lost to time. Since MOSDNJSOSIWTOTW was the first soap Maggard launched their line with in 2012 no one is left alive outside of Brad and Casie to tell us what the name means and despite my fervent pleas they won't tell me. It is lost to the winds of wet shaving memes never to be known by us. What shouldn't be taken away from it is that I just put some tape over another Old Spice dupe because it says right there on the label that's not what it is. Even the side label shows that this is definitely Maggard's Old Spice dupe.
Now, I'd show you the ingredients but they are a well kept secret so Maggard actually just puts on the ingredients from a random other soap maker so there's really no need to read them because they're fake. Is that legal for selling goods? No? There are now laws in the world of cosmetics. It's the wild effing west and Brad Maggard is the damn sheriff. What's the soap itself like? Have you ever touched perfection? I try not to give away what I think of a soap in the first section of these reviews, but Maggard Razors base (The Mag) is perfect no matter what. It exists in a state that is both soft and hard and in between. What do you like your base to be like? That's what it is. Perfection.
As for the labeling and artwork? I mean look at it! The balance of blues with a purplish font. Hang it in the Louve where the Mona Lisa sits. Chef kiss.
Oldness: Grandpa? Is That You?
Numbers? You think numbers can describe what this smells like? Opening this puck and smelling it is not just like smelling a perfect replication of vintage Old Spice it's like hugging every male ancestor you have in an embrace of warmth. I have espoused in the past that the scent of Old Spice can be very personal as its often mixed with experiences of loved ones, nostalgia, and the scents of experiences you've had. MOSDNJSOSIWTOTW is exactly that. Whatever scent you think Old Spice is is what it smells like. It's not a scent, it's every happy memory you have put into a tub. I am weeping as I type this thinking of it.
Spiciness: Tears of Joy
On my first shave with this soap I was so emotionally overcome by experiencing perfection that I wept on the floor for an hour. My wife came into the bathroom and just nodded, as the puck was still open and the moment she smelled it she understood. The next two shaves I was able to keep my emotions in check but every once in a while I justs break down and cry. The pizzas crusts I made last night for dinner were salted with tears of joy and they were the best pizzas I've ever made.
Lather: Lover
"Cowzilla! You're breaking your review scale," you shout at me like someone who has never experienced true love. Not the kind of paltry love between two soulmates, or two best friends, or a parent and a child, or that creepy love Plato talked about between an old man and a boy. The kind of love that MOSDNJSOSIWTOTW's lather elicits. That's love. You've never even felt love until you've lathered this soap. I've already filed my divorce papers.
Shave: 5... billion
Yes, billion with a "B." Previously a perfect score in The Great Spice Off was set at the paltry total of 25 (a number no soap has ever reached). But 25? For this shave? Putting this lather on your face is like placing the hands of God onto your cheeks. I felt at total peace with the world as it went on. Then the shave. Maybe shave is the wrong word? Cushion? Slickness? No words in any language can truly explain what this soap "shaves" like. Verbal communication is too weak a medium to speak about MOSDNJSOSIWTOTW. If only I could mentally share with you the experience. Alas, all I can do is award the shave 5 billion points.
Post: Nirvana
I no longer exists on this mortal plane. As the last perfect stroke removed the hair from my face I transcended. This is not a review of the post shave it is a review of Post Shave, a state of being once only obtainable by years of studying in a Buddhist monetary, fasting for three decades. I have achieved Post Shave. I am in a better place than you all thanks to Maggard's MOSDNJSOSIWTOTW.
Final Verdict:
I once thought I knew what shaving was. I did not. MOSDNJSOSIWTOTW has opened my eyes to levels of shaving that are beyond understanding and yet entirely understood. At the next Maggard Meet Up I apologize if I have evolved into a perfect form and thus can no longer communicate with you on the mortal plane.

Think all cartoon covers are cutesy, no-sex, kissing-only, “clean” books? Well, don’t judge these books by their covers because I present to you, Cartoon Covers With Open Doors. (These are all adult Romance books.)
What This Is: A list of a bunch of books with cartoon covers whose stories have open door sex scenes. I combed through my own reading history but mostly found these titles in the monthly stats wrap up for the sub for the last few months.
The degrees of the sex scenes in the books and authors listed below vary, so I’m not using “steamy,” or “spicy,” “explicit,” or “smutty” to distinguish between the books because those are very subjective reader to reader. Open doors simply means that sex occurs on page, with the reader present. (For example, Stephanie Archer and Emily Henry are both open door writers but their sex scenes are very different.) If it was listed on romance.io as Open Door or above, I noted it.
What This Is Not: A full, complete, or comprehensive list. There are tons more books out there that have cartoon covers and open door sex scenes. By all means, adds your favorite below!
Note: the publishing industry uses the term “clean” to market kissing only/no sex on page books. This isn’t a discussion about the stigma and discourse around the term. I in no way view on page sex as “dirty” nor kissing-only as “prudish,” nor does our community-at-large here.
The Individual Titles List: Some of these authors may have more than one cartoon cover open door novel. My research time was limited, and I apologize for anything left out. These links take you to the Goodreads page. I was afraid of overwhelming the Romance Bot if I tried to summon it.

2024.06.08 06:30 mikeramp72 Endgame #4

4th: Shane Powers (Panama - 5th)

i have an issue with my penis, im so sorry. the linsanity run ends here!
u/SMC0629:
Shane is a character who I don't think you can replicate. His focus on humor is something people can find overbearing, but most of it is just a joy to watch. He has some of the funniest moments the show has seen, whether intentional or unintentional. However, the main reason I love Shane is his moral and emotional stuff. From his nicotine withdrawls, to his relationship with Aras, to most imporantly, his bond with his son. It makes for to this day, the best family visit the show has ever seen. Shane is incredible, very deserving of endgame.
~
u/DryBonesKing:
So of all the people in this Endgame who are in my Personal Top 100, Shane ranks the lowest. I’ve actually lowered on him a little bit since this thing started and if I had no deals attached at all, I’d probably have him cut around the same time I tried to cut Lex. One of my 10/10s with minor criticism. But before I get into that, let’s talk up why Shane’s great: because he’s literally batshit.
I cannot fathom how he passed the psyche test to get on the cast, because there’s so much going on with him to the point of it being overwhelming. Shane going cold turkey with his nicotine withdrawal is an amazing case study that doesn’t feel ethical, but goddammit was it entertaining! Shane slots perfectly into Casaya and his dynamic with literally everyone on that godforsaken tribe (but especially his relationship with Courtney) is perfect. Hell, he’s also got an underrated dynamic with Terry as well and I think gives the guy some very interesting characterization in the endgame. Shane’s batshit energy and “bad vibes” however does get offset by his relationship with his son, which I think is probably one of my favorite loved one visits of all time. Boston helps humanize him in a way that you normally don’t get to see for these “crazy” type of characters and their whole dynamic and the build-up to the loved one visit is probably one of the biggest reasons why Shane not only works, but works perfectly.
The only criticism I think I can give Shane is that sometimes, his bullshit does come across a bit too much. Like, moments where he loses his shit on Courtney and threatens to kill her in her shitty apartment? Feels believable in terms of his loss of sanity. Him losing his shit about “his sitting spot”? Pushing it, but I kinda buy it. But that whole blackberry scene? Honestly, a bit too much, makes the whole character feel a little fake. Like I know he’s doing a bit, but he says it such crazed energy and the edit takes him serious enough that it just rubs me the wrong way. It’s admittedly only a single scene so it doesn’t irk me enough to bring him down from a 10/10, but like Lex and his relationship with Big Tom, it’s just a minor nitpick I have with this otherwise flawless character.
Overall Rank – 87/821
~
u/Zanthosus:
Shane rides the line of being incredibly chaotic without it ever becoming concerning or worrisome. That’s not to say it never rides that line incredibly close, because there’s definitely points where he can bring a level of discomfort to the season that makes me hesitant to consider him truly great. Even despite that, though, he makes for incredible TV nine times out of ten, so I’m still glad he’s made it to endgame again.
~
u/Tommyroxs45:
Shane is the soul of Casaya, all of the incredible moments quoted to this day basically all come from Shane. He works so well with the rest of the tribe and how he and the rest of them are somehow able to control the game is baffling but also comedic gold.
~
u/Regnisyak1:
You better believe I am getting him to endgame in Survivor Rankdown: All-Stars to do his damn writeup
Personal Rank: 4/821. 10/10.
~~~~~
u/ninjedi1:
When I was a kid, my bedtime was 8pm. However, because I was a little shit I would usually get out of bed usually about 30 to 50 minutes later and see what my Mom was watching on TV. This would be my first way I would experience Survivor for a while. My first experience were these two guys sitting at this set and one of the guys looked really cool with his beard and funky rainbow shirt. The next key Survivor memory I have is a challenge where they had to swim out and then down to get rings, but one guy drops him to the ocean floor, but then another guy goes down and goes “It was so deep…and I got it!” and that was really cool. I finally got a chance to see more than a couple minutes of an episode where I got to see most of this one episode where one team only had two people left on it, and I thought that they must stink at the game, and I was right cause they lost both challenges. Then my Mom started letting me watch the first half of the episodes about the jury phase of Guatemala, where I was rooting for Rafe cause I thought his name was cool. But finally, I got to experience my first real season right from the start, Survivor Panama Exile Island. Naturally, I needed to pick my favorite to root for in the season, and when I saw this one guy right at the start with hair that I thought looked cool and saw his name, I decided “Him. He’s my favorite”.
Shane Powers (5th Place, Panama)
Shane powers is my favorite survivor player of all time ever since I first saw him as a kid. I was worried on rewatch that I only liked him because I had nostalgia goggles on, but on rewatches I love him even more. The first episode actually greatly sets up who Shane is and what his story is going to be, which is actually pretty incredible considering all screen time is split between 4 teams, and La Mina wins immunity so they aren’t nearly as important for the focus of the first episode. He complains about how all his tribe wants to do is work and wants to call people out for being moronic. He also talks about how he just stopped smoking the day before coming out to the island, so he can’t lash out at anyone while he’s on this detox.
The next episode is when Shane hits a low point in the game. The shelter La Mina has isn’t finished when a huge rainstorm comes in, so they’re soaked, and wonders why he’s even out here cause he doesn’t need the money and misses his son. We also get two iconic lines back to back from him. Most remember the “No more torrential downpours sir god, no more of those!” line, but my favorite as a kid was “I do not like you flea!”. Luckily though, a swap happens and Shane gets first as “the cool guy with the Boston tattoo” to be on the new Casaya tribe and chooses Courtney to be on it. He then immediately starts trashing the season theme by complaining about how didn’t belong in the older men tribe because he was 34 going on 12 and prefers this new tribe as he doesn’t feel like wanting to leave at all. He even gets himself in a great spot strategically as Shane instantly forms an alliance with Aras, Courtney, and Danielle, swearing in his son to stay true and tells everyone that if they screw him he’ll kill them and tells them he’s serious when they laugh. However, that grace period ends quickly after they lose immunity, saying that Casaya is in dire straits and were wrecked physically, and now he was once again done with the game and wants to be voted out, which annoys everyone including the alliance he just made. However, he gets convinced by Aras to stick it out and he just needs water, so he decides to stay and immediately tells Cirie and Melinda to their face that they’re going home. Such a huge emotional roller coaster with Shane, and it's only the second episode.
The next couple episodes do set up a rhythm of how Shane’s experience on Casaya goes. For starters, he starts developing a big hatred for his two biggest allies, Danielle and Courtney. With Danielle, he feels like she doesn’t do nearly as much work as him or Aras, and argues with her about her aversion to working. He also gets annoyed with Courtney simply by the fact that she annoys him, and they end up bickering over everything. Another big part of Shane’s character is his big outbursts, the big one from episode three is when he gets a big rock to sit on and calls it his thinking seat, tells everyone that no one can sit on it, and when everyone laughs he starts yelling about how he just wants to sit on this rock.
These emotions boil over in episode 5 when Casaya loses immunity again, and originally he wants to vote out Bobby, but gets convinced by Aras to vote Bruce. So Shane makes a deal with Bobby, swearing on his son that he would keep Bobby around until final 6. But uh oh, the women of the tribe want to vote out Bobby now, which greatly annoys Shane cause he just promised Bobby that he would get Bobby to F6 and starts yelling at Courtney about it for some reason. He would throw his vote and Bobby went home, but he was so livid he yelled about how they made a bad decision due to Danielle’s emotions while everyone was trying to sleep. He basically wants out of the alliance but can’t because he swore on his son’s name. Luckily for him, all the women on the tribe want him out next, so when asked if he could take back his son’s name, they say yes immediately, and then he tells them that he can’t work with people who make their decisions emotionally and then tells them that they do nothing. At that point, even Aras was ready to vote Shane out. Luckily, they win immunity and go on a reward to a panamanian village. That’s where Shane manages to bum a cigarette off a local and gets an insane rush from it that somehow gives him the ability to make up everything with Danielle, allowing all to be forgiven.
Then the merge hits, and Shane ends up in a really good spot! Since Casaya are up in numbers when the merge hits, 6-4, and he quickly rallies all of Casaya to stick together, giving Shane an easy ride to final 7. That means we get a lot of great Shane moments! We get him asking Jeff to bring out a temptation during an immunity challenge, and when Jeff reveals he doesn’t have any, he just drops out. He complains about the people talking about the reward they won, saying “That’s a problem, I couldn’t finish my bacon cause there was too much”. We get Shane chowing Cirie his penis to check on a rash he’s getting and then him stuffing his face full of cheeseburger instead of doing the immunity challenge, and then says he overperformed at the immunity challenge cause he almost ate two cheeseburgers both in the same episode!
The biggest episode for Shane though was the touchy subjects episode. We do get the funny Shane moments at that challenge where he gets voted as “person who thinks they’re in control of the game” and “most moodiest person”, which he then proves by complaining about Courtney cutting him twice, saying that her life in the game is changing, specifically her enjoyment around camp. He also gets on his hands and knees begging Cirie to take him on reward, which she doesn’t. We also get the iconic Bruce medevac scene, where Shane helps carry Bruce out on a stretcher buck naked. But in the morning, Shane begins strategizing with Courtney, seeing her as a dream person to take to the F2 to beat. They solidify a plan to work together in the game, and then Shane proceeds to threaten to kill her in her shitty apartment if she betrayed him, much to Cortney’s annoyance because her apartment isn’t shitty! This would lead into Shane’s strategic downfall, as Cirie figures out how useful Courtney would be to take to the end while Shane is too busy using a piece of wood as a blackberry to allow him to communicate to people not on the island, and she organizes a Courtney vote, leaving Shane out of it. This shocks Shane when it happens, but gets assured that he is still good for F4 by Aras. This calms Shane down and makes him confident that he’s safe, when in reality he would be next to go if Terry won immunity again. And sure enough, Terry won immunity again and Shane gets blindsided at the vote, and instead of a huge meltdown which everyone was probably expecting, Shane brags about how he’s going to have a chocolate ice cream bar in one minute (extra emphasis on the one minute) before finally getting his torch snuffed.
So all of the above is great. Shane is clearly a goofy crazy character with a lot of funny moments and outbursts, and that makes him a great character, but that isn’t what makes him number one for me. What makes Shane the best for me and elevates him from a great character to a perfect character, is the love he has for his son. We see Shane himself explain how much Boston means to him, as when watching a part of his video from home, he begins to tear up and cry when seeing his son, calling him his son, his brother, his other half.It really resonates with me how much Shane clearly loves and cares for his son Boston out there, especially when you consider the status quo at the time was for men to keep their emotions under wraps. It's especially unique with Shane since usually people who are about their family play the game to win it for him, but for Shane it is what makes him want to leave. The first time he thinks about quitting is when he realizes how much he misses his son and questions why he’s even out there. He cares so much that when he uses his son’s name for promises, it ways on him deeply, like when he hated the people in his alliance but he was stuck with them due to using his son’s name and asking them to let him take it back instead of just outright betraying them, or being annoyed when the vote switches to Bobby cause he just promised on his son name to keep Bobby until F6. We were honestly robbed with that extra scene where Shane thinks he shouldn’t be there cause he’s missing his son’s birthday, so Courtney suggests the whole tribe sing happy birthday for him, and the whole tribe sits at the beach singing happy birthday while Shane just stares off into the night sky is just emotionally powerful. This all leads into the F5 reward challenge, where we learn that the reward for the challenge was the loved ones visit, where Boston shows up. But Terry already won, so it's up to him who gets love. It's generally tense because we know how much Shane hurts and misses his son, so when Terry lets Shane take Boston to the resort with him, it's just so emotionally powerful. In a way, after everything Shane had gone through, getting to finally see the son he missed the whole time he was there was probably better than winning the million dollars. That’s what makes Shane the perfect character to me, as even though he was crazy due to nicotine withdrawal and was high strung, at the end of the day, he was just a father who really missed his son, and I will always love that about him.
XXX
The four of them sat in that room for hours, none of them saying anything as their thoughts ran rampant with possibilities. This was uncharted territory for all of them, which was cause for concern – Lawrence had been agreeable enough so far, Alain supposed, but there was always the chance that this was just a pretense. Then again, he had to admit that didn't make much sense – after all, none of them were responsible for what had happened in Los Banos, and Lawrence seemed to know it. Eventually, though, the door to the room opened, and Lawrence stepped in.
"Alain Smith, come with me," was all he had to say. Lawrence began to turn around but paused. He stared at Sable with a look of minor amusement, which she returned with a glare of her own. "Do not worry – even if he were to upset your judges, we will be returning him to you shortly. Your Thrall will not be harmed during any of this, you have my word."
Satisfied with himself, Lawrence's attention was directed once again to Alain before leaving the cell. He motioned for Alain to follow after him, then began to step out. All Alain could do was give the others a shrug before following suit.
The two walked for several minutes, passing by several closed doors and hallways. Occasionally, they passed a pair of guards blocking a door; Alain couldn't help but note that they looked more like statues than anything in their surprisingly fancy outfits – it reminded him of an old-fashioned military unit more than anything. Their demeanor only reinforced that thought – the only thing that moved was their eyes, never blinking and always directed at him. Alain forced himself to refrain from allowing his hand to drift to his holstered Colt as he passed yet another set of statuesque guards.
He didn't expect them to try anything, and even if they did, he doubted he'd make it out alive. But he could at least empty his revolver's cylinder and take one or two down with him if that were to happen. Lawrence eventually stopped, with Alain nearly stumbling into him. A sly smirk crossed the vampire's face, which his amusement, but no words were exchanged between them. The door ahead of them opened by itself, slowly revealing a large, dimly lit room. Alain took a deep breath, adjusted his belt, and walked in.
The room was larger than anticipated. It had vaulted ceilings that scraped to the top of the mountain where windows were placed to allow diffused light to come in along with fresh air. The architecture was ornate and confusing; the closest Alain had come to recognizing any of it was from a lithograph of The Notre Dame shown at a world's fair he'd once attended long ago. In the center of the room were three stone thrones, built to loom downward to the entryway. Each seat was occupied by a person in black robes; they reminded Alain of his Sunday schooling back home more than anything.
As if he needed yet another sign that this was likely going to end poorly for him.
"The facade of your world and ours has been breached," one of the figures, the only woman among the group of three, said. Her eyes were red but with blonde hair, just like Sable's; however, the streaks of gray throughout betrayed her age. How old she was supposed to be, Alain had no idea, but given that Sable was apparently several hundred years old, this woman had to be even older than she appeared. She had an accent that Alain couldn't place, but it sounded like she may have been from the East Coast. "We three will divine the truth from you, and you will not resist," she added.
Alain looked over the other two. They were both men, one of them with a pencil-thin mustache and hair slicked with oil. If it weren't for the Bishop's outfit, he could have looked like someone who owned a bank or a fancy restaurant. The other was less of a man, and more of a frail wrinkle. Marred with age, his eyes were milky blue and his vision looked distant. His face looked somewhat alert, but otherwise seemed to be concentrating on something else.
"State your name," said the lucid man, a thick French accent permeating from his lips. "Do include any surnames, titles, or honors you have been given."
"Uh, Alain Smith? I don't have any titles. Hell, I don't even have a middle name," he said, trying to warm up to the three.
Without warning, his entire body suddenly froze, leaving unable to move a muscle. A heat began to build up within him; it was like he was back in the Arizona desert, only somehow, it was flaring up from inside him. He winced out of discomfort more than anything; it was painful, of course, but it felt more like a bad sunburn more than anything debilitating. Still, it was highly uncomfortable, enough that, had he been able to do so, he would have shouted. As fast as the pain flared up, though, it dissipated completely.
He fell to the ground, the wind knocked out of him for a moment as he struggled back to his feet. The three seemed nonplussed, as if he didn't just act like he'd been punched in the gut. Alain took several breaths to steel himself. Whatever had just happened, it was clear to him now that the Tribunal were not people he wanted to be messing with, even with the gun on his hip. No doubt they had something that could kill him before he could even get a shot off.
No, he was going to have to play their game if he didn't want to suffer through whatever they'd just done to him for a second time.
"May I know the names of my accusers at least?" He asked. A wince escaped him in anticipation of what he was sure would be more pain, but nothing came.
"We accuse you of nothing yet, unless you wish to confess something to us," the woman said. "I am Thorne. The man who asked you your name is Julius, and our esteemed elder Owen is presiding over this talk in a more passive fashion. Now, tell me of your master and her butler."
Alain took a step back in confusion "My master? I'm not a servant, if that's what you think, ma'am. Sable hired me as an escort."
"And how did they commission you for this job?" Julius questioned.
"A diamond about the size of my fist. I was to take them from San Francisco to Sacramento. Los Banos was a simple stop since it's a well-known place for people to rest and restock on goods before traveling farther north. It was supposed to be a simple job, but… well, you three know how it ended already. Hence why I'm here now."
"Indeed," Owen said dryly. ""Do you have the diamond with you now?"
Alain reached into his pocket and retrieved the small jewelry box, then tossed it to the Adjudicator, who caught it and opened it. He appraised it for a moment, then passed it around so the others could look at it.
"Quite the pay for a simple escort mission," Thorne pointed out as she tossed the box back to him.
Alain shrugged. "I didn't dig any deeper. They held the diamond in front of my face; I knew better than to ask any questions about it."
"And they never mentioned where that jewel was from?"
"No."
"You may want to take a closer look at it, then."
Alain's heart skipped a beat. He opened the box and retrieved the gem, turning it around in his hand as he held it up to the light. As he did so, he noticed something he hadn't seen before – a small inscription of some letters etched into the side.
"C and S," he said. "What does that mean?"
"It is short for Clan Sable," Thorne explained.
"Clan…?" A thought occurred to him in the moment, and he looked back to the Adjudicators, surprise crossing his face. "Sable did mention a sister at some point…"
"You know her as Sable," Owen said. "But while we kept you all confined in that room, I had Lawrence do some digging around in our records. We keep track of every vampire clan's lineage as they are created or pass away. I figured her name sounded familiar, and I was correct – Sable is her clan name; her first name is Lilith. Does that information mean anything to you?"
"No, it doesn't."
"It shouldn't unless she told you. After all, you are newly exposed to this side of the Veil." Owen shook his head. "Clan Sable is the most powerful clan in Romania. They were led by Lilith's parents, until her sister Cleo killed them and usurped their positions. She was cooperative for a while, but recently, Romania has gone dark. We have sent envoys to try and make contact with her once again, but none have returned."
"Respectfully, what does that have to do with what happened in Los Banos?" Alain asked. "This seems unrelated."
"We are trying to establish why Lilith sought to make landfall here, in the United States," Thorne answered.
Alain's heart skipped a beat. "...You think her sister sent her," he realized, his eyes widening. "You think she's somehow responsible for what happened to the town. Am I understanding that correctly?"
"You have to realize how suspicious the timeline is," Julius implored. "Lilith is missing for several centuries-"
"Because she was staked and left for dead, and had to slowly regenerate over time," Alain growled. "Look, I don't know how else to tell you all that you're wasting your time and effort by focusing on her. You want the truth about what happened? Here it is – the mayor of Los Banos was dabbling in otherworldly forces he had no business messing with in the first place. He sacrificed many townspeople to try and make himself immortal, and when people tried to discover the truth and fight back, he summoned hordes of undead to descend upon them. In the end, his ritual backfired somehow; I'm not sure exactly how, but it did. And that's what happened – you can ask anyone in this group about it and they'll tell you the same thing. Now, if there's nothing else, I'd like to return to my friends, already."
The Adjudicators exchanged a glance with each other, but said nothing. Figuring they were finished, Alain rose to his feet and marched towards the door. He was about to step outside when Thorne called to him.
"Wait."
He paused, then turned back towards her. "Yes?"
"There is one more thing. It concerns you, in particular."
Alain's eyes narrowed. "I assure you, the only thing I did during the siege was-"
Thorne shook her head. "This is unrelated."
"What could possibly-"
"It involves your parents."
His eyes suddenly widened, and his breath hitched. Alain stared at her, frozen in shock for a moment, but then, his legs moved almost automatically. He stepped past the chair he'd been sitting in, marching right up to the trio of stone seats that towered above him. Standing in front of them, he crossed his arms and then uttered just two words in response.
"I'm listening."
2024.06.08 00:17 thinkingstranger June 5, 2024
Today the S&P 500, which tracks the stock performance of 500 of the biggest companies on U.S. stock exchanges, closed at a new record high of 5,354. The Nasdaq Composite, which is weighted toward the information technology sector, also closed at a record high of 17,187. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was also up, but not to a new record. It closed at 38,807.
That notable economic news got very little attention, likely in part because there is so much else going on.
Most dramatically, House speaker Mike Johnson elevated Ronny Jackson (R-TX) and Scott Perry (R-PA) to the House Intelligence Committee, giving them oversight of the entire U.S. intelligence community and access to the nation’s most sensitive foreign intelligence. The Intelligence community includes intelligence from the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Space Force, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Defense Department, the State Department, the Department of Energy (which oversees information about nuclear weapons), the Treasury Department, and the Department of Homeland Security.
It also oversees the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and that oversight is likely a key reason Johnson put Jackson and Perry on the committee.
A former Navy admiral, Jackson was Trump’s White House physician. Trump liked him enough to try unsuccessfully to promote him into the cabinet and within the U.S. Navy, and then to back him successfully for Congress after he retired from the Navy in 2019. In 2022 the U.S. Navy demoted him from admiral to captain after a 2021 report by the inspector general of the Defense Department showed he had “disparaged, belittled, bullied, and humiliated” his staff and abused alcohol on at least two occasions when he was supposed to be providing medical care to government officials.
Perry is more problematic than Jackson. Cassidy Hutchinson, former aide to Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows, told the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol that Perry played an important role in the plan to keep Trump in office after he lost the 2020 presidential election. She told podcast host Scott Lamar in October 2023 that Perry was “central to the planning of January 6,” and she has said repeatedly that Perry asked Trump for a pardon before he left office.
Federal authorities from the FBI seized Perry’s cell phone in 2022 as part of their investigation into the effort to seize the presidency; he is the only member of Congress whose cell phone was seized. Like Trump, who has attacked the FBI since then-director James Comey refused to drop the investigation into the connections between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russian operatives, Perry has complained bitterly about the FBI’s investigation of him.
Now, Perry will be on the committee that oversees the FBI. In a statement, he said: “I look forward to providing not only a fresh perspective, but conducting actual oversight—not blind obedience to some facets of our Intel Community that all too often abuse their powers, resources, and authority to spy on the American People.”
Former director of the CIA General Michael Hayden wrote: “That’s unbelievable. Both of them. Intelligence Committee? God help us.”
There is other news about the attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election: yesterday Wisconsin attorney general Josh Kaul filed felony forgery charges against attorney Kenneth Chesebro, who planned the use of fake electors; former judge James Troupis, who managed Trump’s 2020 campaign in Wisconsin; and Michael Roman, a political operative who allegedly delivered the paperwork for Wisconsin’s fake electors to a congressional staffer to try to get them to Vice President Mike Pence.
On January 6, 2021, after the document was delivered, Troupis texted to Chesebro: “Excellent. Tomorrow let’s talk about SCOTUS strategy going forward. Enjoy the history you have made possible today.”
In Georgia, a court of appeals paused the case against Trump and his co-conspirators from proceeding until it rules on Trump’s appeal to disqualify Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis. It has tentatively set a hearing date for October 4, meaning that voters will not get to learn the outcome of the trial until after the election. If Trump is reelected, the trial will almost certainly not go forward.
The federal criminal case against Trump for retaining classified documents is also stalled. Judge Aileen Cannon not only has put off hearings, she has added a hearing on June 21 to consider whether Special Counsel Jack Smith was properly appointed in the first place. She is revisiting a decision already decided in the affirmative in 2019 by the Washington, D.C., Court of Appeals. She has also taken the highly unusual step of inviting three people not involved in the case to argue in that hearing: two will argue that the appointment is invalid, one will argue that it was done properly.
Meanwhile, there were signs over the past few days of the deeply different party principles at the heart of the 2024 election. At an event to reach Black voters in what Julia Terruso and Sean Collins Walsh of the Philadelphia Inquirer described as “one of the whitest and most conservative parts of Philly,” Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL), who is Black, illustrated the grip of a fantasy idyllic past on MAGA Republicans.
Donalds praised the Jim Crow era of American history—which was literally named for a vicious caricature of African Americans that helped to justify the lynching that characterized the period—because “during Jim Crow the Black family was together.” He blamed the Great Society programs of President Lyndon Baines Johnson, including civil rights and social welfare programs, for eroding family values.
On the House floor, Minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) urged Donalds to “check yourself before you wreck yourself.” Democratic National Committee chair Jamie Harrison was less poetic but more succinct. He wrote: “These fools have lost their damn minds….”
In the Senate, Democrats forced Republicans to vote on advancing a bill to protect access to contraception. Republicans threatened a filibuster, meaning it would take 60 votes to bring the bill forward. And so the measure failed by a vote of 51 in favor to 39 against (Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer of New York voted no so he could bring the measure up again). Republican senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voted in favor of the measure. All the other Republicans either voted no or did not vote.
All the Republicans running for reelection this year voted no: John Barrasso (R-WY), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Rick Scott (R-FL), and Roger Wicker (R-MS).
Some of them said they voted no because there was no danger that Republicans would attack contraception, claiming that Democrats were just “fear-mongering.” But in 2022, House Republicans overwhelmingly voted against protecting contraceptive rights, and in an interview last month, Trump said he was looking at restrictions on contraceptives before his campaign walked the statement back. Yesterday, in a hearing of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee on “How Abortion Bans Have Created a Health Care Nightmare Across America,” a Republican witness, Dr. Christina Francis, chief executive officer of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) took the position that IUDs and Plan B emergency contraception constitute abortion and should be banned. In the Senate itself, Joni Ernst (R-IA) has already proposed getting rid of Plan B.
A February 2024 poll showed that 80% of American voters said that protecting access to birth control was “deeply important” to them.
For all their rhetoric about “America First,” MAGA Republicans are out of step with actual Americans. The Trump loyalists now in charge of the Republican National Committee also appear to be remarkably ill-informed about the country itself. Sam Brody, political reporter for the Boston Globe, noted yesterday that on their website promoting the Republican National Convention to be held in July in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Republicans used a photograph not of Milwaukee, but of Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City.
Following yet another offseason of cryptic tweets and drama, Stefon Diggs showed up from the onset of the 2023 season as red hot as the lasers he was catching off the arm of Josh Allen - making it clear he came to play and leave everything out on the field. However, 2023 was a tale of two Diggs’ - and that's not a reference to Stefon's brother, Trevon, who unfortunately was out for the season prior to their two teams facing off in week 15.
Through the first 6 games of the year, Stefon Diggs was averaging 8 catches, 104 Yards, and nearly a touchdown per game. During that time, the Bills passing offense funneled the ball through Diggs and relied on his ability to make plays all over the field to remain productive. Diggs answered the call and delivered the type of results we've come to expect of him, however just like the team itself, Diggs’ season would fall off pretty harshly following the team's week 6 match up against the Giants. In the 11 remaining games of the season, he failed to produce a single 100-yard outing and would only catch 3 more total touchdowns on the year. It's important to acknowledge that the Bills as a whole struggled offensively between weeks 5 and 10, directly leading to Offensive Coordinator Ken Dorsey's firing after Buffalo’s week 10, 24-22, loss to Denver - a game in which Diggs only caught 3 passes for a total of 34 yards.
Once Joe Brady stepped in as Interim Coordinator, the Bills offense began healing as a result of changes made to their strategy, changes which resulted in a more balanced attack that trusted the run game and prioritized spreading passes around to a wider selection of targets in the air. This shift meant Diggs was on the field less, in addition to receiving less targets when he was out there running routes. The impact of this change is most plainly obvious when comparing Diggs’ stats from weeks 1-8 to 9-16. While this adjustment ultimately worked out in Buffalo's favor (they would close out the last 7 games of the year with a 6-1 record), it did drive an unfortunate statistical drop for Diggs. Diggs would still flash his elite hands and skills often enough to finish the season respectively though, earning a spot in the pro-bowl as well as finishing #13 in total receiving yards and #7 in total receptions. Tragically, what he will probably be remembered most for this past year (at least in the minds of Bills Mafia) will be the ugly, game-altering drop he had late in the Divisional round matchup against Kansas City.
Throughout 2023 there were all manner of rumors on whether Diggs was playing through an undisclosed injury or experiencing a falling out with the organization, true or not, it would be foolish to claim that Diggs isn't still a premier pass catcher in the NFL. Now a Houston Texan, Stefon Diggs will serve as another weapon for C.J. Stroud to take advantage of in 2024. Assuming he doesn't destroy the culture in Houston by manifesting into some sort of target-hoovering diva-demon like all the tired sports media personalities predict, expect the former Bills Captain to be a key contributor for the Texans next year.
#99 - Lavonte David - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Off-Ball Linebacker
After flirting with retirement and leaving Tampa Bay last offseason, Lavonte David stuck around for another year as a Buccaneer - year 12 (and soon to be year 13). And it paid off, yet again, as David stayed the impactful, complete LB he has been for over a decade.
Playing 956 (98%) defensive snaps, David was impactful across the board, recording 99 tackles (134 combined per pfr) with a 5.7% missed tackle rate, 4.5 sacks with 19 total pressures on only 76 pass rush opportunities, 5 forced incompletions and 1.1 yards per cover snap, and a ridiculous 61 run stops and 17 TFLs. His coverage stats took a bit of a dip from the past, but he was still solid while being incredibly impactful against the run. He's smart - see here how he diagnoses quickly, and beats the blocker to the spot before sticking the TE for a loss. He's exceptional at slithering through OLs - see here and here how he uses his speed and awareness to split through holes in the line and finish the play before it can start. Despite being 33, he's still really fast - if you're late on rotating in pass protection, he's already past you and sacking the QB. And he's always had a nose for the football.
David has been one of my favorite players of the 2010s and it will be sad to see him go. Few LBs are as complete as Lavonte has been for his career - he can do everything you want from an offball LB. Given that he's likely to retire pretty soon, this might be the last time he appears on this list, so I'm gonna break the rules a bit. Lavonte has always stood out statistically in two ways, by forcing fumbles and TFLs. As for FFs, the only LB with more is Cornelius Bennett, who was somewhat of a hybrid rushbacke4-3 OLB. Which means that among true off ball LBs, nobody has forced more fumbles than Lavonte David (tbf only tracked reliably since 1993). Similarly, I've never seen a player as adept at slicing through blockers to make a TFL. He has 160 career TFLs, 9th all time. No other offball LB is in the top 20, and only 4 other LBs have even 100. We might as well start giving out the "Lavonte David award" to whoever leads LBs in TFLs.
Put him in the HOF, cowards.
One word has followed Chubb throughout his career: Dynamic. Coming into his second year in a Dolphins jersey off a five-year, $110 million contract extension (recently restructured in the wake of injury)—Chubb managed to arguably elevate to higher levels of said dynamic play than even in previous seasons that saw him earn Pro Bowl recognition.
In 16 games this season, Chubb managed to thrive in a defense that utilized its front 7 in unconventional manners. Of the 837 snaps Chubb played: 36% of snaps against the rush, 57% against the pass, and 7% in pass coverage (top 20 in EDGE coverage snaps…over a dozen in the slot). Amongst his position, Chubb posted a top 10 pass rush win rate per ESPN along with top 15 pass rush and top 5 coverage grades per PFF respectively. This showed with 11 sacks, 73 total tackles, 44 hurries, and 6 forced fumbles (t-1st in NFL) over the season.
Chubb has an uphill battle going into the next season with a torn ACL acquired in Week 17 against the Ravens. Still in the prime of his career and a leader within the locker room, Chubb certainly seeks to return to this level of form as soon as possible. There's a lot of money on the table for him.
Offensive tackles have always been highly sought after for one important reason; to keep their franchise quarterback healthy. Miller had a slightly different objective; keep Jimmy Garoppolo handsome, it's fine if he misses the season since he was far from a franchise quarterback; but Miller excelled, allowing the least pressures (only 16 pressures per PFF, compared to 18 for Tyron Smith and Trent Williams) out of any premier tackle. While he missed a few games due to a shoulder injury, Miller put in enough work to prove he's a top 100 player in the league.
Always one of the more underappreciated OTs in the league, Miller's impact was best felt by his absence; in the first missed game of his career, Jets defenders got to Aidan O'Connell several times, and the rest of the offensive line just looked flimsy.
Combining agile, quick footwork with enough armpower to seal off some of the biggest men in the NFL, Miller quietly dominated opposing pass rushers, and #74 could even scale multiple levels on the run to help his team generate big plays. Even when it didn't seem like there was much worth fighting for, Miller never gave up hope.
#96 - Dion Dawkins - Buffalo Bills - Offensive Tackle
The shnowman cracks the top 100 this year after a dominating performance in the trenches all season long. While offensive line play can be hard to parse and judge, Dawkins ranked 4th in the league among OTs in pass rush win rate at 93% and only allowed 1 sack. The 30-year-old from New Jersey (famously the home of the Giants and Jets) also provided numerous rare O-line highlights, such as the absolute shnowplow of a block he delivered against the Cowboys’ Damone Clark. His arguably career-best season also saw him named to the Pro Bowl for the third straight year.
The Bills shook up their skill positions on offense this off-season, but the core of the offensive line remains largely the same, and Dawkins will certainly be a leader of the unit. This off-season he signed a 3-year, $60.5 million extension, making him one of the highest-paid offensive linemen in the league. He has played in at least 15 games each season of his career so far, and Buffalo is clearly banking on his production to continue as the rest of the offense takes a new shape.
This year, Dawkins was also Buffalo's nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, due in large part to his foundation Dion's Dreamers, which provides mentoring services to troubled youth. Dawkins has become highly involved in the Buffalo community since being drafted in the 2nd round in 2017.
#95 - James Cook - Buffalo Bills - Running Back
Being a running back in Josh Allen’s offense is a bit tricky. Allen is virtually a one-man offense, willing to not only sling the rock deep but also bruise out some yards on the ground for himself. For most of Allen’s tenure in Buffalo, Bills running backs haven’t been the most productive, failing to produce a single season with more than 1,100 scrimmage yards. When Buffalo selected James Cook in the 2nd round of the draft last year, they sought to give Allen a workhorse back that could efficiently eat touches and take the load off of Allen just a bit. After a timeshare in the first year, the Bills let Devin Singletary walk and gave Cook the lead back role, and he did not disappoint.
James Cook is a true modern running back. His lightning quick acceleration allows him to hit holes hard and bounce outside if they’re plugged. He’s not the biggest or strongest back, but he can still shrug off arm tackles and churn for extra yards. Pass catching out of the backfield is a key part of his game as well, for a running back he’s very proficient at route running, catching the ball in stride, and running after the catch. He does everything you want out of a running back in the 2020’s NFL, and he rewarded the Bills with the 6th most scrimmage yards in the league. He’ll have to do quite a bit to pass his brother in career stats, but this season was a great start.
One of the most powerful and positionally versatile offensive linemen in the NFL, Elgton Jenkins’ value to, and dominance on, the Packers OL has more than earned him his place on this list. Elgton is the engine that makes the Packers' run game go. Whether it be trapping, wrapping, or pulling to lead, Elgton is the Packers’ most-pulled lineman and their best (and one of THE best in the league) elevator to the second level on inside zone and duo run plays. Finally able to hunker down and stay, more or less, in the same position for a full season, Elgton was the driving influence on the Packers finishing top 10 in yards per attempt and top half in overall rushing offense, even while being near the bottom of the NFL in called run plays. It has yet to be mentioned how great he was in pass protection this year, as well. With a younger QB who at times held the ball a bit too long, Elgton allowed 0 sacks and had one of the lowest pressure rates allowed in football.
As mentioned before, Elgton is a dominant player in the run game because of the power he executes his blocks. His main weakness throughout his career has been his feet and ability to play in space, but this year he was tasked with reaching, trapping, and pulling to lead more than ever before. And as demonstrated here, he excelled in that role. The Packers were at their best when Jenkins was tasked with doubling and elevating or climbing to the second level immediately. Here, he displaces the LOS, comes off the 3T, and gets to the backer to create a lane for the back to follow into the endzone. In this example, the player engaged with the LT does not cross the LT’s face, so he quickly climbs to backer and creates a cut back lane for the back to gain 6-7 yards. As you can see, much of what the Packers did in the run game centered around 74, and he delivered time and time again.
In the pass game, Elgton used his strong anchor and well-timed striking to shut down every interior defensive lineman he faced. 0 sacks allowed, an absurdly low 4.4% pressure rate allowed, and the sheer dominance he displayed on tape has led many experts to call him a top 3 pass protecting guard in all of football. This is probably his biggest area of growth once making it to the NFL, as he always had the power in his lower half, but has improved his base and hand placement to truly stonewall any bull rushes he faces. And if you try and get cute by swimming or, god forbid, knowing your beat and jumping to swat the ball. Well, you will probably end up on your ass. He rose to the highest levels of competition, repeatedly shutting down (three examples there) the likes of Aaron Donald on a game-by-game basis.
Overall, Elgton Jenkins continues to push the established elite at the guard position, and with continued technical improvement, he looks to rise even higher on this list next season.
Will Anderson. What a full grown manderson. Only a rookie, but already the most electric pass rusher we've had since JJ Watt. His early season stats didn't quite show it, but since week 1 he's performed at a high rate already producing one of the top pressure rates in the league and opening up opportunities for the rest of the banderson. In four months, people went from criticizing Demeco and Caserio for trading a supposedly massive draft haul to Arizona for Anderson to realizing the incredible positive impact that the trade had. All according to planderson.
In his first season, Anderson showcased great pass rush ability, always working his way into the pocket, stuffed the run effectively, and even blocked a field goal; WAJ Swat, amirite? In fact, Lil Jon is rumored to be working on a song called "Turn Down for Wanderson", Daniels music video and all. JJ Watt is one of the all-time greats, but are the Terminator-Megawatt comparisons valid? Can Area 51 stand on the same ground as the Milkman?
(Yes, those are all real nicknames.)
Anderson's rookie year compares nicely with JJ’s , both on stat sheets and the eye test, and both got even better as the year went on; WAJ also walked away with the DROY award (though he didn't have to compete with Von Miller and... Aldon Smith?) Will he follow the same trajectory as JJ? In fact, he doesn't need to. It's fine if he doesn't. We don't need the greatest defensive end of the century, because Will Anderson is already damn good, does his job, and is certain to improve even further. Maybe he'll end with a gold jacket in Canton, maybe he won't, but we don't need that. What expectations we do have of him, he's easily exceeding, and on his current trajectory -- whether JJ-like or not -- he'll continue to exceed them for a long, long, time.
Deebo Samuel's 2023 season saw him compile 1117 total yards and 12 total touchdowns in 15 games (though that 15 includes a weird injured decoy game with 0 targets, a game with 9 snaps, and a quarter in a meaningless week 18). The best metric to summarize the impact that he has on the team: the 49ers were 11-1 when Deebo played more than 33% of snaps in a game and 1-4 when he did not.
8.8 yards after the catch per reception ranked first among receivers, making this the fourth consecutive season that Deebo holds that distinction (and he was 2nd as a rookie). The ascension of Brandon Aiyuk and full season from offensive player of the year Christian McCaffrey shrunk the role of one of the league's most exciting players, but he made the most of the opportunities he got, ranking 8th in yards per target among players with 1000 yards.
The most memorable game of the year for him is undeniably his hat trick against the Eagles amidst a tense race for the 1 seed, capped off by a 46 yard all-YAC touchdown. Contrary to popular belief, this is actually not how he gets all of his touches. His longest touchdown of the season, a 54 yarder against Seattle, and one of his back shoulder TDs (a new feature off the offense this year!) put the wide in wide back to remind fans (and a couple loud players) that Deebo is more than capable of killing you on traditional routes.
This was the final season for #19 in the Bay Area (because he's changing his jersey number to 1) and he once again left it all out there, putting together enough production to clinch a spot on this list despite a diminished role.
#91 - Justin Simmons - Denver Broncos - Safety
Winners are remembered. The glory of sports comes from hoisting a trophy at the end, and everyone who touches it becomes immortal. To those who never touch it, they can still create a legacy through winning in other ways: big regular season games to get into the playoffs, and perhaps even winning a couple games in the tournament.
In this lens — losers have no space. Those who come up short get nothing. Sports are zero-sum. There are always winners and losers. Every immortality comes with a death.
Justin Simmons played 118 games with the Denver Broncos since 2016. In his rookie year, the team went 9-7 but missed the playoffs. In every subsequent season, the Broncos had a losing record. Despite his All-Pro play, Simmons never played in a meaningful football game in late December or January. In a team with a history of winning — Justin Simmons was a loser.
A ball on a memorial in 2021. Spending a weekend at charity events in the city months after getting cut. Maybe the problem is the binary. Pursuit of immortality driving everyone mad to the point of blindness. There is the trophy and that matters, but there are more things in life too. There are the connections. There are the emotions.
Justin Simmons never won a big game in Denver. He never played in one. But in 2023 — as he had done throughout his career — he proved himself worthy of immortality in the Ring high above.
Latinfeels.com review. Is Latinfeels legit..or a TOTAL SCAM?
https://preview.redd.it/ehsvddaci45d1.jpg?width=1140&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ed91ac1b4d1f4864048aeb4711cde94e456e8e64
Hello, savvy online daters! Buckle up as we take a revealing journey into the depths of LatinFeels, a dating site that, despite its enticing promises, seems to have a knack for draining wallets while delivering heartache. Let's break down the reasons why LatinFeels might just be another elaborate scam, preying on the dreams of finding true love.
If you're searching for a real dating experience, consider Ashley Madison. Unlike LatinFeels, Ashley Madison boasts millions of genuine members and avoids shady practices designed to exploit your emotions and finances.
Scam 1: The Endless Money Pit
Gregory Kaye hits the nail on the head with his review: “Feels like I lost my money. I haven't read one review yet that ends up in a happy ending.” LatinFeels lures users into spending vast amounts of money on services that never lead to real connections. The site thrives on your investment in false hopes and empty promises.
Scam 2: Artificially Created Interactions
Antone points out the shallow interactions: “Most women on here come off as being players looking for booty calls.” The conversations on LatinFeels often lack depth and sincerity, making it evident that the interactions are manufactured to keep you engaged (and spending) rather than fostering genuine connections.
Scam 3: Sister Site Shenanigans
Robert Stanway exposes a critical red flag: “This is the sister site of Asian Melodies scam site. You’re never going to meet any of these girls.” Sites that are part of larger networks of scam sites share the same deceptive tactics, and LatinFeels is no exception. These platforms use similar scripts and models, ensuring you never get close to a real meeting.
Scam 4: Restrictive and Costly Communication
Chris provides a firsthand account of the site’s restrictive policies: “The site intentionally restricts what can be sent by the woman... The restrictions mean you have to pay more to view them.” LatinFeels ensures that every interaction costs you more, from viewing photos to reading messages, without any transparency about the actual content you’re paying for.
Scam 5: Excuses, Excuses, Excuses
Jerry reveals a common pattern of evasiveness: “If you ask these women to communicate with you away from the site, you’ll always get the same answer.” The site’s users are trained to keep conversations on the platform, where every message, photo, and interaction costs money. Real connections that move to free communication platforms are systematically blocked.
Scam 6: Overly Polished Profiles
D Smith sums up the artificiality of the profiles: “Girls are too polished and the conversations too generic.” The profiles on LatinFeels often appear too good to be true, featuring professional photos and generic, scripted responses that fail to build a real connection.
Scam 7: Lack of Real Verification
Buddy highlights the dubious nature of the profiles: “If you track these girls down on social media you’ll see they have different names and locations there.” This discrepancy suggests that many profiles are either fake or managed by multiple individuals, making genuine communication impossible.
Scam 8: Hidden Behind Paywalls
Bartosz Skorupski points out the excessive costs: “Spent almost $500 in 2 days... None of the women knew what social media was.” The site’s design ensures that users keep spending money without ever reaching a point where free, off-site communication is possible, trapping you in an endless cycle of paid interactions.
Scam 9: Emotional Manipulation
Brian-Clarksville, TN describes the emotional toll: “The ladies work hard to keep messaging you which costs... They are not interested in you, they are interested in your money.” The site preys on your emotional vulnerabilities, offering false hope and superficial interactions that drain your finances.
Scam 10: Impossible to Leave
Brett Smith shares his frustration: “They do their car salesman BS to keep you as a member.” Cancelling your account is a labyrinthine process designed to retain you as a paying customer for as long as possible, often requiring a direct confrontation to escape their clutches.
Overall Verdict and Recommendation
LatinFeels presents itself as a gateway to romantic bliss but, in reality, it's a sophisticated scheme designed to extract as much money as possible from its users. From restrictive communication policies and overly polished profiles to endless excuses and emotional manipulation, the platform is riddled with red flags that scream "scam."
For a genuine hookup experience, give Ashley Madison a try. With millions of real members, clear costs, and no shady bot tactics, Ashley Madison stands out as a trustworthy alternative. Plus, you can start with a free trial using the link provided.
Stay vigilant, stay informed, and may your quest for love be free of scammers!
2024.06.07 09:51 Stackson212 Benchmarking Caitlin Clark's Stats at the Quarter-Season Mark (LONG)
Yes, this is yet another Caitlin Clark post, and it’s a long one--but I promise that this one will be free of hot takes, controversy, and larger societal commentary. In fact, I promise that any takes in this post will be ice-cold - relentlessly non-controversial. Apologies in advance for the length.
Introduction:
In an effort to cut through the noise of the debate about how Clark is performing so far, I'm going to compare her statistics after 11 games, just over a quarter of the way through the WNBA season, with a comparison set made up of the best WNBA guards today and in league history - their rookie stats, their full career stats, and (for those players still active) their 2024 season-to-date stats. I am hoping to repeat this at the half, 3/4 point, and full-season marks as well. This is very long and highly nerdy, so I am guessing this post won't be for everybody.
Obviously 11 games represents a tiny sample size, and so Clark's statistics are super volatile right now. They have swung a lot even over the last few games, as Clark's numbers looked a lot better after eight games than they do after 11. Even with established players on veteran teams, it's hard to have much confidence in averages after only 11 games; and Clark and the Fever are still so new to each other that Clark's stats will be more volatile yet.
But, as long as we keep the limitations in mind, I still think this is a worthwhile exercise, just because the debate around Clark right now is so frustratingly binary; even setting aside the non-basketball stuff, there are too many people debating whether she's a GOAT being held back by her coaches/teammates/refs/league, or whether she's overhyped trash crippling her team with turnovers and misses. I think it would be useful to have some sort of frame of reference for her early numbers. All numbers I'm using are from Basketball Reference and are current as of the games of June 5.
I'll admit my biases here. I'm a Storm fan, and have been lucky enough to see some of the greatest players in WNBA history win four championships for my team. I think there have been lots of amazing players in the league, there are other great rookies, and I don't think the sun rises and sets on Caitlin Clark. But while I'm not fixated on Clark, I am rooting really hard for her to succeed. I enjoy watching her play, I love the way she stepped up to the huge moments in the college game, and I think her development in the league is a great storyline to follow.
Clark's stats:
Clark's stats after 11 games
I won't go deep into Clark's stats in isolation, but before we benchmark, I wanted to call out a few things:
Before contextualizing against other players, I'd like to use game score to contextualize Clark against herself - specifically to test the hypothesis that fatigue from the Fever's frenetic early schedule is hurting her performance.
Acknowledging the ridiculously small sample, there may be some truth to it. The Fever have played two games that were the second half of back-to-backs (i.e. a game on Saturday after a game on Friday) - and the Fever had to travel on the road between each set of back-to-backs, further compressing the schedule.
Those two games were Clark's two worst game scores (3.8 and -.6). Clark's assists, rebounds, steals, blocks, and even turnovers in those games were more or less in line with her season averages; but her scoring and shooting was far worse (see below). In fact, in those games, her overall shooting from the field lagged her three-point shooting, indicating that she had trouble getting to the rack and finishing.
Clark's games with 0 days rest and 2+ days rest, contrasted with the rest of her season. Note the poor shooting, scoring, and game score in the second half of back-to-backs, while other stats stayed more or less consistent.
What about the opposite case; games where Clark had plenty of rest? Well, Clark and the Fever have played only one game that was preceded by two rest days, and that was her best game, where she scored 30 points and filled up the rest of the box score. She also shot nearly 44% in that game, though her three-point stroke was still down at her season average.
All WNBA players need to play back-to-backs; and again, this is a tiny sample; but as the Fever's schedule lightens, this could be a reason for optimism that Clark's shooting might come around.
Comparison Set:
Clark is coming in with high expectations, so in choosing the benchmark players, I'm setting the bar punishingly high. However: a) I am limiting the comparison set to guards, as they are Clark's peers, and forwards and centers are less directly comparable (especially in terms of how they adjust to the WNBA); b) I am not including legends like Cheryl Swoopes and Cynthia Cooper, because they joined the brand new WNBA as veterans; they didn't make the 22-year-old, fresh-out-of-college transition that Clark is making and that we are evaluating.
The comparison set includes a) the reigning 2023 WNBA all-stars at guard (11 players), including Kelsey Plum and Sabrina Ionescu, two players I've seen most frequently compared to Clark; b) Skylar Diggins-Smith, who sat out 2023 but was an all-star in 2022; c) Diana Taurasi, who was not an all-star last year but is a clear benchmark for elite WNBA guard play; and d) four retired legends in Sue Bird, Becky Hammon, Lindsay Whalen, and Cappie Pondexter.
The final comparison set comprises 17 of the greatest guards ever to play in the WNBA, with 177 combined seasons of experience and 78 combined all-star appearances. This is a murderer's row of WNBA guard greatness. If Clark measures up against this group, she will be doing well indeed.
https://preview.redd.it/7q87cl6v135d1.jpg?width=660&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=82505fedeee442429df90a703391f38df83472fd
One note - while Sabrina Ionescu was a rookie in 2020, she was injured only three games in and missed the rest of the season. As a result, I am treating her 2021 season as her rookie season for benchmarking purposes.
Rookie Comparison:
First I'll compare Clark's first 11 games of her rookie season against the average rookie season from our comparison player set, and then rank her position in each statistic against the 17 comparison players. Full disclosure that this analysis is innately tilted against Clark; this is taking statistics from Clark's awkward transition phase at the beginning of her rookie season and comparing them against full rookie seasons, in which these future all-stars had a full season to figure things out.
Data here, analysis below:
https://preview.redd.it/b0luvnbx335d1.jpg?width=1230&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bdb6b7af717bc334bd3c969b1ae0c9ae0ee71260
Overall, the story when comparing Clark against these all-stars and legends as rookies is a little sunnier than I'd expect given the mostly gloomy narrative about her struggling. In a rookie context, most of her stats look better than I would have expected. I'm not a forecaster, but I think there is upside here - in my opinion it is more likely that her shooting and turnovers improve in the rest of the season than that her counting stats collapse.
Career Comparison:
While we're here, why not raise the bar even further, and compare Clark's stats against the career numbers from this group? This is hugely unfair, of course; we're still just working with Clark's first 11 games, in which she has been thrown into the deep end of the WNBA pool, while now comparing against the whole career averages of the WNBA's best guards, inclusive of their prime years, all-star seasons, and championship seasons. This is a real torture test that we will engage in, in the interest of science.
https://preview.redd.it/xskksm9ed35d1.jpg?width=1099&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=13e0fe5777785bc074ec3f34cc6a129ecd95ac51
2024-to-date Comparison:
Just because we can, let's now compare Clark's 2024 season-to-date stats with the same time period from the active players in our comparison set. Obviously we will lose our retired players from this group, as well as Chelsea Gray, who has not retired, but has not played yet in 2024 due to injury. That means our comparison set will be 12 players, instead of 17 (including Clark, 13 instead of 18).
You could say this is fair, because now all players are dealing with a small sample size; but this is also taking a set of active players who (aside from Taurasi) are coming off all-star seasons and thus should be at their peaks. Unlike career stats, these stats will not include rocky rookie seasons or late-career fades.
Kelsey Plum Comparison:
One player who consistently comes up in Clark comparisons is Kelsey Plum; if for no other reason than because Plum set the NCAA women's basketball scoring record that Clark broke. However, Plum has also been mentioned as a player who struggled in her adjustment to the WNBA. Let's compare the two:
Just based on the statistics, Plum did struggle in her rookie year; she averaged single-digit points per game, single-digit PER, and underperformed vs. Clark in every measure except for turnovers (though she did have a 20%+ turnover percentage) and three-point shooting (though Plum trailed in all other shooting metrics, including those that include three-point impact, like eFG% and TS%).
Plum figured it out after a few years; and while her career counting stats still do not quite match up with Clark's first 11 games, the dropping turnover percentage, the far better shooting percentages (including the advanced metrics) and the PER all exceed what Clark has achieved so far. I'll say it again; this is an unfair comparison, but this does illustrate how Plum has improved her game since her rookie season.
What's interesting to me is that Plum's 2024 so far (in, again, a tiny sample size), has taken a bit of a step back and is more comparable to Clark. Plum is scoring more than Clark, but her other counting stats lag; and she is not shooting well from the field; Clark is almost even in eFG% and ahead in TS%. Plum is clearly better in terms of turnovers, but the two are almost tied in PER.
Sabrina Ionescu Comparison:
The other player I see frequently compared to Clark is Sabrina Ionescu; like Clark, Ionescu is also well-known for her three-point shooting, was a recent college phenom, and has a bespoke shoe deal with Nike. Looking at the stats, Ionescu also looks to me like the closest comparable to Clark's performance so far.
https://preview.redd.it/9tvjc04yr35d1.jpg?width=1276&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=09bdd09d6b0b25a444a957ebfd62558ba0aac387
Just as a reminder, since Ionescu only played three games in her true rookie season, I am using her 2021 season as her "rookie" year for benchmarking purposes. In that quasi-rookie year, Ionescu's counting stats were close to Clark's (after 11 games), trailing just a touch in every category. Her shooting was slightly better in most categories, though close to Clark's - and Clark's emphasis on three-point shooting leaves them essentially tied in TS%. They were also very close in terms of PER - 14.9 for Ionescu in 2021, vs. 14.4 for Clark so far in 2024. The biggest difference, of course, is turnovers, though Ionescu was also over 22% turnover percentage.
Ionescu has continued to improve, boosting her scoring and shooting percentage while bringing down her turnover percentage and improving her PER accordingly, tracking above 20 so far this season. I don't know what Clark's ceiling is, or how it compares to current-day Ionescu; but improving in the areas that Sabrina has improved would be a good roadmap for her to follow.
In summary (and TLDR):
Given all the murky debate about Clark's performance, I found the story to be surprisingly clear:
Edit: Adding back in context for Clark and a comparison to Skylar Diggins-Smith.
Copying in from a comment below, because I think it could fit here. I worked hard to peel away the speculation and extrapolation from the post (and tried to be clear when I left some in) - but here at the end it might be interesting to add back in some additional context and extrapolation. This is all just my viewpoint, but it explains why I look at the numbers above with optimism.
The first 11 games have been a bit of a perfect storm for Clark - a) very little break after playing as late as she could in the college season; b) a short training camp and frenetic schedule over the first 11 games, resulting in limited practice time to build chemistry and necessary unspoken communication with teammates (especially important as a starting point guard new to the team); c) unprecedented defensive attention from longer, faster, more physical defenders and more sophisticated defenses; d) incredible pressure and scrutiny from a media and rabid fanbase that (at least in part) is tuning in to either watch her perform miracles or rooting for her to fail. For all those reasons, I expected her numbers to be worse than they are.
As a Storm fan, I'd like to relate Clark to Skylar Diggins-Smith. Diggins-Smith has a bunch of advantages over Clark coming into 2024; she is a 10-year veteran, six-time all-star who knows exactly how to succeed in the WNBA and has succeeded. She wasn't coming off of a college season that concluded weeks before training camp. She doesn't draw the same level of defensive attention or media/fan scrutiny as Clark. But like Clark, Diggins-Smith was a point guard coming to a new team, without adequate training camp and practice time to learn the team, build chemistry, and unspoken communication. Diggins-Smith struggled in her first five games with the Storm, and the team went 2-3. Diggins-Smith's average game score in those games was 4.3, with an average of 4.6 turnovers per game (not far from Clark's turnover numbers). Over that stretch, the Storm did not look like the strong veteran contender that most expected; they looked disjointed and as if they were playing as individuals. If anything, they looked a bit like the Fever (admittedly, not helped by Nneka Ogwumike missing some games).
But from the sixth game onwards (coincidentally or not, after two days of rest), things have clicked for Diggins-Smith and the Storm. The team has gone 4-0 since then; Diggins-Smith's average game score over that stretch is 15.8, and she has dropped her turnovers in half vs that early stretch, to 2.3. This is what can happen when a point guard gets on the same page with her team; they make each other better instead of playing like individuals.
Can Clark and the Fever make a similar jump after their long break this week? Hard to say; they are a younger, less-experienced team. But I'm looking forward to watching.
2024.06.07 02:44 -goatz- does the “prophets just were speaking as men” loophole apply to joseph smith?
my biggest annoyance with church history and doctrine is the new excuse that, “prophets who said weird stuff in the past were speaking as a man at that time.” like i went my whole childhood being told, “when the prophet speaks, god is speaking through him.” so when i found out some of the crazy shit old prophets said (which they said CAME DIRECTLY FROM GOD) it shook my faith quite a bit. i just really don’t like how convenient it is to say all good things the prophet said are from god, and all bad things were just from the prophet being mortal. like it’s just a shitty cop-out imo.
i don’t remember which apostle it was, but it was one of the big important ones who said something along the lines of, “you cannot have a testimony of the church if you do not have a testimony of joseph smith.” now joseph smith did a lot of batshit weird stuff and to me, his track record makes the church seem so much more fake than the actions of any prophet after him ever did. the way i grew up, i was taught that all the prophets were important and chosen, but joseph smith held a higher reverence and importance.
i always thought everything joseph said was treated as doctrine, because a teacher had told me that. so everything joseph said about the church is true and directly from god, because it came from joseph. so can the church say joseph messed up some doctrinal things? if joseph was simply “acting as a man” while making the church’s founding doctrine, who’s to say other doctrine is not divinely inspired? to me, admitting joseph made some stuff up opens all kinds of doors of doubt i don’t think the church wants. can the church take back joseph-smith-level doctrine based on the “he was acting as a man” excuse?
2024.06.07 01:51 ReindeerSpiritual606 Minecraft Worldbuilding Server - Democratic City-State [smp] [factions] [roleplay]
Gilded Nations is a worldbuilding server that's starting up very late tomorrow, and I am calling upon all other people who think this sounds like it would be a fun idea. With you I would like to create a defensively minded, internal growth-orientated, somewhat isolationist true democratic city-state amongst the inevitable onslaught of war mongering status-chasing empires, kingdoms and fake democracies!
Here is some flavour text below; though nothing is set in stone, and I imagine much will undoubtedly develop and change with the help of any of those that join!
Join me in expanding upon the rich lore of... The Tzan Republic, centered (not geographically) on the port-city of Tzan, a well developed and defended hub from which the Tzani people congregate and communicate with the wider world. An ancient race of mountain dwellers, the Tzani's main trade and skill is that of stonework and smithing. They still make rigorous use of the mines and mountain fortresses that have been built across the mountains that neighbour their settled coastline.[/p] [p]Inherently a defensive people, the Tzani is all about building upon what they have, and despite historical isolationism is more willing than ever to trade and become involved in the affairs of others. Both creators and keepers of great detailed castles, walls, towers and statues; the Tzani, if known for anything - are known for their beautiful tiger statues that they erect upon every new shore discovered.
Join me in founding a truly democratic city-state... in which all state citizens are truly equal. Position is merely a differentiation of ones responsibilities, and rank is for order within that duty. One may select their position, but all are voted into their rank during periodically held elections by those "above" and "below" them within that position, helping to achieve a meritocratic society. Only within ones duty may they have "superiority" over another within the Tzan Republic, and as such the Tzani are a people who scoff at social status and those that believe themselves better than others.
And much much more!! If this seems cool to you and you're looking to join a chill, tight-knight group in which all are welcome, and commitment to fun, lore and fellowship is appreciated above all then look no further!
Discord: showkey.
