2024.06.09 18:34 Talios_ With New Emotion, Comes New Oddities. (Lorepost)

It had been yet another day on Lantica beach for the Crimson Paragons, not too long after the hard fought victory in the unexpected alien invasion. But something just kept nagging at Talios... A strange emotion that just wouldn't leave. A... Yearning. For something. For... Someone. Someone had been at the back of his mind ever since he had returned from that trip. When that Lamia had hugged him, tail and all, Talios felt strange. He felt something he had never felt before. A new emotion... And unbeknownst to him, this emotion would spark something even he'd think unfathomable. All it'd take... Is one, relatively innocent question. When everyone was chowing down on some delicious food Nhak had made at the beach party, and Kyouko, one of Max's comrades had showed up. A Jorõgumo. A yokai with a ravenous appetite, essentially.
Kyouko showed up, by... Crawling down a banana tree. There were no longer any bananas in that tree. Not even peels...
"A large fish skewer? Sounds nice."
Talios gives a simple response, not entirely paying attention. Something else is bugging him.
"Hi Kyouko."
Nhak, on the other hand, gives her a proper response.
"Yes Kyouko, a whole fish, just for you! Made with love! Aoi Helped!”
But just then... Talios gets a brilliant idea. And... He can finally try and get her out of his head.
"Say... Kyouko. Do you... Know where Nagisa is?"
Nagisa. Another of Max's crew, practically a daughter to him. A rather bubbly Lamia, though her words can pack quite the venom when she's teasing someone. Talios, unfortunately. Is not aware of this yet.
"Nagisa should be in the lodge still. Rachnia is helping her fix her swimsuit."
Damn it. He was hoping for her to be alone, so they could speak in private. Looks like I'll have to abort, Talios thinks to himself...
But he's practically wearing his heart on his sleeve. Everybody can tell what's happening, he's a... Terrible liar.
"Ah, I see. Alright then."
Talios gives another simple response, hoping for the topic to just be dropped. But everybody else can tell how... Unusual, he's acting after mentioning Nagisa's name.
"Something up, boss man?"
Ember. A small dragon, ethereal in nature... Most of the time. In this instance, it appears she's in fact, solid. It's a part of Ejders soul network going on in his body. Talios had completely forgotten Ember was on his shoulder...
"...What are you talking about Ember. I'm fine."
Talios... Is a really bad liar. It is quickly becoming apparent just how bad he is.
"I doubt that. You're just randomly asking about the tail meatbag? For no reason?"
Then Aoi the Oni speaks up.
"Talios yer startin' ta sound like Max askin where Rachnia is. Ya doin alright?"
"I am... Perfectly fine. Just wanted to make sure everybody is accounted for. Bounty hunter instincts, can't help it."
A slightly better lie. Still obvious. But a slightly better lie.
"Come on! I'm your second in command! You can tell me these things!"
It's impossible to tell how Ember got the notion of being second in command.
Now it's Sarah who speaks up, yet another comrade of Max. A cyclops.
"if ya had a face I'd tell ya your pokerface blows. But uh... Yer pokerhelmet blows."
"I do have a face."
Talios takes off his helmet. His pokerface does, in fact blow. He looks... Ever so slightly flustered, even. In expression, more than anything. He can't blush, since he has no blood.
"Your pokerface is even worse than your pokerhelmet."
This time it's Safi, a dragon of the stars. Although, currently, they're in a human form.
Talios: "I could kick all of your asses at poker."
Ejder: "Remove the last two words, and I could believe it."
Sarah: "Did that Lamia hug from yesterday awaken somethin in ya? Awww."
Talios: "The tight and scaly Lamia hug awoke absolutely nothing in me."
Safi: "I've never heard a more blatant lie than that."
Talios: "Yes you have. Because it isn't a lie."
Sarah: "Talios. I have to deal with Max tryin to bluff his way through shit. Your pokerface ain't cuttin it."
Talios: "I am the best liar to ever live across the damn centuries. You're all simply fools who mistake complete truth for mere lies."
Suddenly, Nhak appears to phase behind Talios. He places a ghostly hand on his shoulder.
"From one armored giant to another..."
"Your pokerhelm really is terrible."
And Nhak lets out a laugh, Talios feeling more defeated by the second.
"Oh not you too Nhak..."
"Talios do I reaaaaaally have to use my strings to make ya tell the truth?"
This voice came from Rachnia, Max's Fiancé. She came out of the water, having been taking a walk...
Talios jumps at Rachnia's presence.
"WHERE IN THE BLAZING blue hells did you come from."
His voice changes from loud to quiet on a dime, oddly enough. And it was at this moment...
That a devilish look came across Ember's face.
"Hey, Talios, since you wanted to make sure everyone's accounted for, why don't you go check in on the Tail-Meatbag personally?"
"...I- Well... You see..."
Talios falls silent, having been defeated at his own game by Ember. Finally though, Kyouko asks the question that had been plaguing Talios since Rachnia's arrival.
"weren't you helping Nagisa with her swimsuit, Rachnia?"
"got that done earlier. She's helping Cerne tie her swimsuit now."
Perfect! Talios had his out, with Rachnia confirming that they can account for Nagisa.
"Ah. See, she's with Cerne! Rachnia can account for it. No need to go looking. No reason... At all..."
And Talios thought he was safe... Until the sight of Cerne casually strolling along the beach enters his view.
Talios: "...Wait why are you here Cerne?"
Rachnia: "Hey, Cerne, I thought Nagisa was with you!"
"Guess she might be in the lodge with Lala or Eliza."
Ember: "C'mon, Boss Man! Everyone has given a different response as to where Snake is! You gotta figure out which one is true!"
Talios: "...Surely Cerne is right."
She was not, as Lala happens to walk out of the water with perfect timing. One by one, each of Max's companions says another is with Nagisa... And every time, the companion mentioned shows up... Until there are no more companions to show up.
Meaning, Nagisa is in fact. Unaccounted for. Talios lets out a defeated sigh, picking Ember off of his shoulder and placing her down.
"I... Will go make sure Nagisa is accounted for..."
Feeling utterly defeated, Talios trudges to the lodges in search of Nagisa. Seph, a multiversal god, and known as the Paragon of Freedom... Only has a few words to say.
”Godspeed, funny chaos man.”
Eventually, Talios reaches the fifth lodge. Each one before, held no answer. He expected nothing different from this one. Three firm knocks on the door...
"Yeees? Who is it?"
Ah shit. So Nagisa was here... Talios was kind of hoping she wasn't so he wouldn't have to go through this.
"Damn..."
"AHEM. Uh. I was told to make sure everybody was accounted for. So... Yeah. You weren't at the beach, so I came to check the lodges."
A few moments of awkward silence.
"WELL! Since you're here, I can return to the group and inform them of you being accounted for."
Talios immediately turns and starts walking away, satisfied with his totally foolproof lie.
It was... Absolutely terrible. Obviously.
But before he could leave. A behemoth of a man stands in his way. Gonkgar. He himself is walking to the lodges.
"Where Nagisa?"
"Talios... you're not just here to check on me, are you? You lie terribly."
Nagisa's voice is... Frankly, beautiful to Talios's ears. But damn it... Why did Gonkgar have to intercept him...
"I don't even need to see your face to know. Come on in, the door's unlocked."
Gonkgar pushes Talios toward the door and turns around.
"...Shit."
"Alright fine..."
Talios pops open the door a crack, peeking in. He hits his helmet on the door frame.
"hey, no need to be shy!"
"...I am never shy. A bounty hunter is not shy."
He has not moved from his peeking position in the door. Nagisa giggles in response to Talios's very, very poor lies.
"Actions speak louder than words ever could. Now head inside before I have to pull you inside myself."
"I- ...Okay. Fine."
Talios, begrudgingly, enters the lodge. He's... Fidgeting. He has his hands hidden behind his back, but it's obvious just from the movement of his arms in general.
Not even Talios is sure what he's feeling... Or how.
Gonkgar stands nearby Nagisa’s lodge with his arms crossed, defending his bro’s chance at makin’ a move.
"Oooh you don't even have to tell me. someone's in loooove?"
"Did Max send you to me for advice?"
Talios seems... Genuinely startled by Nagisa's question.
"...Love? I... Am not sure... I don't think Chaos gave me such capabilities... Nor was I sent by Max specifically..."
"Then why are you fidgeting like a schoolgirl about to confess?"
Ouch. There's the venomous teasing Talios was unaware about. And it certainly stings a tad.
"Body language says alot. Maybe Chaos did give you those capabilities already."
"...But why would she... Ugh... No, I could see it."
Gonkgar is still standing stock-still like a statue, arms crossed and giving dagger eyes to anything that comes near, even animals. A rat looks mortified and leaves.
"So... You want to know how to deal with what you're feeling, or... Don't tell me, you have a crush on lil ol me?"
It is immediately obvious that Nagisa hit the bullseye with that one. Talios falls silent for... A solid half a minute, at least.
"...I suppose I should get going for the uh. The feast. Yeah. Man, I'm hungry..."
Okay, now he's just getting desperate with subject changes like that.
"Man, you're terrible at this. Want some advice on how to properly confess?"
"...I feel like... Getting help on this matter, from you... Would be nigh insulting. But fine. I guess..?"
Talios is apprehensive. He still isn't fully processing these emotions he's having... But. Well. He finds it hard to say no to Nagisa.
"So lets start at the basics. When you look at me, what do you feel?"
"Perfectly fi-"
Talios stops himself.
"...Very. Very strange. Like... Fuzzy, I think it would be described."
"Strange and fuzzy inside. Alright. So, when you look at me, what do you want to do? Do you think of someone or something else?"
She's fishing for a particular answer it seems. But Talios, oh poor Talios... Is so, so very dense. Perhaps, denser than a neutron star.
Talios seems to stumble over his words, trying to find the necessary ones to articulate what he wants.
"I... Do not want to do anything to you. Obviously."
Easily a lie.
"Uh... When I look at you, I suppose I think about... You. When I look at most people I'm thinking of them."
Dense motherfucker...
"Aww, I thought those guts of yours would carry over into social skills. What a pity.
"Now, when you look at Max and Rachnia together, do you think of me?"
The verbal jab seems to strike a nerve with Talios for a moment... But yet again, it also seems you've hit the bullseye.
"Well... Yes... Kind of. Occasionally."
"Awww. How sweet. They're joined at the hip. Do you want that too?
Talios feels her tail slowly coiling around his legs.
And it was at this moment, that Maximillian, who had delivered nachos to the beach party felt something very wrong...
Max: "I feel like something is going... Wrong."
Ember: "What? What do ya mean, lucky man?"
Max starts checking his revolver, to make sure it's locked and loaded.
"No real idea... Just... feeling like I'll need to be prepared soon."
Nhak: "On the contrary, I feel like something is going right..."
Safi: "What do you mean, Max?"
Max: "Call it... Parental instinct."
Gonkgar knows what Talios wants, even if Talios doesn’t. It seems Nagisa does too.
Gonkgar begins to think about all the times he and Talios hung out together, his true bro. All the times they fought for fun, and destroyed wizard tarrasques together. He thinks of the time Gonkgar wanted to ask that one girl out to the prom, and Talios totally encouraged him to press his luck. When Gonkgar’s mom was sick in the hospital, Talios made sure to take care of his dogs. If Gonkgar can be here for his bro now, that is precisely what he’ll do.
90% of that might not have ever happened in the real world, but Gonkgar likes to think it did… Somewhere.
Safi: "Do you feel that parental instinct because Talios went to see Nagisa?"
Max: "He did?!"
Safi: "It was pretty obvious he had a crush on her."
Max: "Wait he has a crush on her?!"
Nhak: "Well, someone brought up Nagisa... And he went melon."
Rachnia pulls a quick purple string and hooks it onto Max. Just one command is spoken. "Give him a chance."
He holsters his pistol.
"Fine."
Back in Nagisa's lodge... Talios is stiller than a statue as the Lamia's tail grows closer to his leg. He feels a chill down his non-existant spine... It's probably just a draft... But wait. He doesn't feel cold, generally. Or any temperature. How strange...
"Well... Isn't there like... A process..."
Talios is getting more and more flustered by the minute, something not even HE thought was possible! He's been getting an awful lot of new emotions lately...
"Well there's nothing wrong with a big hug, is there? I'm not easily impressed, so you'll have to do your best."
Talios seems to... Loosen up, slightly?
"Oh. Yes. Hug. Of course. Uh... Sure..."
she taps Talios' nose with the tip of her tail.
"I'll be waiting for a black knight on a noble steed. Impress me."
Aha. Talios understands perfectly now... Is what he thought. But he doesn't. He's so, unbelievably dense... And perhaps, takes thing a little too literally.
”He cooked.”
Gonkgar says to the rat. How foolish he was... Talios was fumbling hard.
"I guess... That's my cue to leave... Ha."
Talios is getting ready to leave... But why?
"Are you sure running away now is very knightly? Wouldn't want to run with your tail between your legs when it matters most."
she's just brushing her hair again, her eyes closed, back turned to Talios.
”Man, she not make it easy for bro. It like bro just discover pools exist, and get thrown in deep end right away.”
Gonkgar says to the rat.
Talios freezes. The sharp words of Nagisa shock him to his very core... Because he thought she wanted a horse.
"But. I was going to go get a horse... You said I needed a noble steed... And all..."
Max is looking at the lodges, arms on his hips.
He sees Gonkgar standing guard. Gonkgar gives a slow nod.
“Let he cook.” He mouths at Max.
Max: "I have to give THIS a chance?"
He's tapped into the security footage.
"He can't even pick up on the noble steed hint! How can you fumble THIS hard?!"
She chuckles.
"I don't need an actual horse. We already have Cerne."
Ah. Now Talios gets it. At least, he thinks he does.
"Oooh! ...Why would I need to get Cerne? Can she help with this?"
"I gotta say, at least you're funny... You know what? I'll give you a few dates. See where it leads... If you can convince Max."
Gonkgar silently launches 30 feet in the air and fist bumps before landing in front of the door again.
"A black knight against a white knight, just like the fairytales. If nothing else, it'll be a fairytale made true."
Gonkgar is silent screaming in front of the door.
”Let GOOOOOOOO!”
Max: "Alright then, hon. If that's the criteria ya want, I'll oblige."
He starts loading his revolver with explosive rounds.
Talios, on the other hand, seems to immediately lighten up. He seems... Happy?
"Really? Wow. Uh... Thank you, Nagisa. I promise to not disappoint. And uh... Maybe... Grow less dense. I guess. Ha."
"Don't count your chickens before they hatch. I have a feeling that you're going to have a much tougher time convincing Max, than convincing me."
Talios's entire mood shifts on a dime. Grim.
"Ah. Yes. Maximillian... Oh dear."
Talios walks out of the lodge, immediately greeted by Gonkgar's back.
"...I won, Gonkgar. I won."
Gonkgar turns around and immediately gives him a giant bear hug. It is pretty tight, but Talios can take it.
"TALIOS WIN."
"Thank you, Gonkgar... For stopping me from leaving that door."
”Gonkgar know what it like. Me have experience with ladies.” He fist bumps Talios’s shoulder. “Okay, you hide now?”
"...Hide? I know Maximillian needs convincing, but... It can't be that bad. Right?"
Talios walks past Gonkgar to the rest of the group once more, unaware of his possibly impending doom.
"He have weapon out. Take Gonkgar second favorite weapon, it maybe help."
Gonkgar holds out a strange... Fish... Spear? To Talios.
"I'll be fine. Although I appreciate the thought, Gonkgar."
And Talios continues walking back to the beach party. And he arrives with a pep in his step never seen before...
"Hello, everybody. Nagisa is perfectly accounted for."
Talios gives a big thumbs up as he delivers the message.
Max: "Yeah. We know. Sooooo. dating sweet little Nagisa, huh."
He's seated, ominously tapping the blue and silver alchemy revolver on his leg.
"Uh... I'm not sure if it's... Considered offically dating. Yet. Just uh... Testing the waters, one may say...You know, I'll admit I'm pretty dense but uh. You seem a tad angry, Maximillian."
"I'm not mad... Just protective."
"Uh... Yeaaah..."
Ahem.
"I think I'll go talk with... Nagisa a bit more. Let you... Cool off."
This. Was a very... VERY poor choice of words.
Maximillian shoots the floor behind Talios, where he would have stepped if he were to walk to the lodges. Talios turns stone cold and still as a statue.
Talios: "Got it."
Max: "We're havin a chat. Ain't nice to walk out during that."
Max: "I'll be honest with ya, Talios. Had it not been you, I'd have put you in the dirt already. Nagisa gave ya a chance, and said if you can beat me, she'll give you a few dates.... so..."
He slowly walks up to Talios.
"When's the duel, friend?"
"Ha... Saturday. High noon. And let it be known..."
"I won't lose, Maximillian Ironstout. That is a promise."
"...Just like I promised Nagisa I'll impress her on those dates."
Now he's trying to egg Max on.
"Ironstout, huh. Didn't even know you knew that raggedy old name of mine. Alright then. We'll see if you're worthy enough to be a son in law, shall we, Chaos Spawn?"
He laughs, no longer being able to keep up the charade.
"Man I suck at intimidation. Hope ya don't mind the hard time, Talios."
"Meh. If it was anyone else, it could've worked. But you've seen how I am, ha! Thinking I could take on Seph."
So he IS self conscious somewhat.
"The hard time only makes things more fun."
And so, it had been decided. Talios now has to fight... For love? Something Talios thought impossible. Strange how things work out like that.
And unbeknownst to all... Chaos is deeply amused by this turn of events.

2024.06.09 16:43 monkaSman Inguinal Hernia from Lifting: How To Prevent Getting Hernia When Practicing Sports

Inguinal Hernia vs Sports Hernia
Strenuous sports and physical activity, particularly weight-lifting, can cause inguinal hernia, a type of hernia that develops in the groin and is common in men.
Strenuous sports can also cause a condition known as sports hernia, which has similar symptoms and even a similar name, but is not actually hernia. Unlike inguinal hernia, there is no lump or bulge in sports hernia.
“In inguinal hernia, part of your intestine protrudes through a weak section in the abdominal wall, causing a bulge or lump. In the case of sports hernia, the intestine is not involved at all,” explains Prof Wong Wai Keong, Head and Senior Consultant for the Department of General Surgery at Singapore General Hospital (SGH), a member of the SingHealth group.
What causes sports hernia
Sports hernia (also known as athletic pubalgia) develops because of an injury to muscle, tendons or ligaments in the groin, caused by playing strenuous sports, e.g. ice hockey, soccer, wrestling. Rapid twisting and turning movements of the body and a sudden change of direction can cause strain, or a tear, in muscle and soft tissue. The main symptom of sports hernia is groin pain.
You are likely to experience severe pain in the groin area at the time of the injury. The pain typically improves with rest, but returns when you resume playing, and bend or rotate your body. The groin pain may extend to the genital area. The groin area may also feel tender to the touch.
Diagnosing and treating sports hernia
Sports hernia is diagnosed with a physical exam and by observing the athlete performing exercises such as sit-ups, to determine whether they cause groin pain. Imaging tests such as an x-ray and MRI may also be carried out.
Treatment involves resting the injured groin muscles, tendons or ligaments for several weeks. Anti-inflammatory medication and icing the injured area can also help with pain management. After a couple of weeks, you may be advised physical therapy to strengthen your abdominal muscles. Typically, you can return to normal sports activities after 4-6 weeks of physical therapy.
If these methods are ineffective in treating the sports hernia, surgery may be required. Surgery to repair the torn muscle or tissue can be a traditional open surgery, or a procedure using an endoscope and requiring small incisions.
If left untreated, sports hernia may result in chronic pain that may prevent you from resuming your sports activities. It may also develop into true hernia.
How to prevent inguinal hernia while lifting weights
Weight-lifting, if done incorrectly, can also cause inguinal hernia. Therefore, it is important to be careful and follow proper procedure if you must lift weights. Following are some precautions you can take to prevent inguinal hernia:
Warm-up before you start lifting weights.
Lift an appropriate amount of weight.
Always bend from your knees, not your waist.
Avoid rushing and lift the weight slowly.
Stop if you feel pain

2024.06.09 16:02 Yorbitron Musician with Post Concussion syndrome

I will do my best to summarize. I have tried posting here before but it’s difficult for me to write everything out. I was in a car accident about 5 months ago. Other driver’s fault. At time of accident I was on a day off from work, employed as a hospital Audio Visual technician. I am a career musician and teacher but Covid made all of that very difficult. Up until Covid I had been running my own music school, teaching full time and working as a creative musician. When Covid hit I switched to remote teaching and taught over 3,000 remote lessons before I realized it wasn’t sustainable in this new world. I worked a couple hard jobs In warehouses and landscaping prior to finding work in a hospital. I’m grateful for this job as I was able to have insurance. The car accident left me with my right thumb badly torn at the base, a bad concussion, whiplash and a knee injury I’m about to have surgery for, torn meniscus. I’ve been limping this whole time and can’t walk without a brace. I’ve had over 70 therapy appointments since accident(hand, speech, vision, behavioral, PT, OT).
My brain injury has left me with impaired vision which I am awaiting prism glasses for. I have had therapy for hand, speech, vision, neck, back , etc. My nausea and headaches remain. I quit drinking alcohol about 2 1/2 years ago but since accident I feel hungover every morning. I go to bed by 9:30pm every night. I hardly have any motivation or interest in music now. It’s like every passion I had for art has dissipated and replaced with confusion and grief for my former self. I can barely handle household sounds when my wife is home and bright light is still very hard to tolerate. I’m about to get switched to Cobra and I don’t think I have much time left before my job security expires. Fortunately I hired a personal injury attorney. My attorney has had to hold off until my medical care was complete. I had to have an IME for insurance last week.
At this point it’s hard to wrap my head around returning to my AV hospital job in any capacity. I have been practicing some instruments like flute and piano but it’s hard to enjoy my main instruments like electric guitar and other instruments I used to play loud. A couple days after my accident I was contacted by a very well known artist who wanted to hire me for electric guitar recording sessions. I told him about my recent injury and that was it. He probably thinks I’m unavailable period now. I might not have another opportunity like that now.
When I make any music now it feels 100% for me. It feels unnecessary to even release my finished productions now. I used to be so excited to release a song or album and share with the world. Now I just don’t care. I definitely cannot teach music anymore and the idea of playing gigs doesn’t even make sense. I used to play jazz and experimental gigs every week and lived in Chicago and NYC. My teachers had been in bands with Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins. My friends are all full time musicians. I have a hard time relating to them now.
I could go on and on. It’s very challenging to stay positive. I spend a lot of time sitting and thinking in silence. It’s been 5 months though. Prior to accident my wife and I planned a two week trip to Ireland. We are going at the end of June. I am looking forward to it and am grateful for my wife and her positivity and patience. When I return I will have knee surgery and will resume rebuilding my life as best I can. I am accepting that I am a new person now and the past is gone. I am lucky to still be here. I have a new outlook now and do not associate my entire identity with being a musician or artist. These are just things I enjoyed before and spent so much time with they became a part of me. In some ways they feel more a part of me now than before my brain injury. Now I do not feel any desire at all to perform or show anyone that I possess these skills. It used to be my whole life and now it feels like how I used to play basketball in middle school.
I feel so nauseous now I might not leave the house today. People who don’t struggle with TBI don’t understand how difficult it is to just appear positive in general. “Try to have a good day and enjoy the nice weather.” I get this sort of advice a lot and I have just started to ignore it. People think they are being helpful but a lot of times it comes off sounding like the annoying man asking the pretty lady why she doesn’t smile more.
I don’t know what else to say. Thank you for reading. Everyone’s posts have been helping me a lot lately. You’re not alone.

2024.06.09 15:09 fueledbyponies Why was I so neglected as a kid

I remembered this while reading other post and wanted to vent about it
When I was 10 years old I spent the summer with my dad, where one of my molars started hurting really bad. I'm autistic, so I've always been really picky with food.
So, my molar started hurting just after my dad forced me to eat meat (I've always hated it) so he thought I was faking it. The pain went on and off for all the vacations. When I went back to my mom, the pain was terrible, but it is not the end of the story.
Few days after returning to my mom's house (the pain was on and off) an earthquacke hitted my country. It was terrible, you can google 2010 earthquacke on Chile to see details.
Just after this event my molar started hurting so bad I couldn't sleep, I was basically passing out because of the pain. My mom had to carry me to a hospital even tho the country was on curfew and she had my 1yo brother with her.
They had to perform emergency surgery in my gum, because the infection was all over it. That's not the worse tho.
The country was in a power outage and medical crisis, so they had to perform this surgery without anesthesia and without the correct equipment in general, and eventually had to remove my molar.
It was so, so painful, I passed out multiple times ans barely remember details, because I was traumatized.
So yeah, I was really neglected as a child and I don't talk to my dad anymore.

2024.06.09 15:03 strawberrycake_23 Help with severe endometriosis

Hi, 22 year old female here, I’ve never had Reddit before but I figured I’d try talking to people on here cause I haven’t had any luck anywhere else. I’ve had severe endometriosis and chronic pain for most of my life, ever since I got my first period it’s pretty much been hell for me. As a teenager they put me on every type of birth control there is, in general I’ve been told my period pain is normal, getting ovarian cysts is normal, my scans were clear and that it was probably just stress. By the time I was 20 I couldn’t take it anymore and demanded I get surgery for it. Once I got the surgery the doctors found I had stage 4 endo, it had also spread to other organs, and lots of scar tissue was found as well. I was told they removed all endometriosis that was found. After surgery, I felt decently better for a while, the best pain wise I’ve ever felt in my life which was a huge win for me. Fast forward to now though, two years after surgery my pain is getting much worse again. My treatment plan at the moment consists of a Liletta IUD and I was previously also taking Norethindrone as well but I stopped cause I felt it was too many hormones for my body. In addition to worsening pain my periods have returned. I stopped getting them after the IUD was put in but they have been back for the past 6 months I would say. About a month ago I went to my OB explaining all this, with my main concern being my periods returning. In fact, it’s been almost more than just periods, with lots of breakthrough bleeding all the time which really increases my daily pain. My doctor had explained to me that he thought I had a hormonal issue due to the IUD and prescribed me estrogen tablets to take for 2 weeks. I did notice improvement with those, they stopped the bleeding and I felt slightly better than usual. But as I’m writing this I am stuck in bed and you guessed it, my period has returned. I obviously plan on going back to my OB cause clearly I need more hormones or a new medication or something. But to be honest, I am at a complete loss with how to help myself. I’ve had this disease for over a decade now. I have spent thousands of hours crying, bed ridden, sleepless nights, days in the hospital, trying every OB around, staying home from school, not being able to do what I want or anything for that matter. I have mourned my old body and accepted my new dynamically disabled body. I got a surgery by myself for myself, my point here is that I could write a book on endometriosis with all my experiences. I am also tired of being on hormones and on top of daily pain I’m always feeling sick. For context, I have insane chronic fatigue that never gets better no matter how much I sleep or what I eat or vitamins I take. I also have really bad nausea every morning, I get headaches nearly everyday. I’ve also been told I have suspected IBS, but every medication I’ve tried with my GI doctor has caused a lot of problems for me. I am also always freezing, and a lot of the time I feel as if I have the flu and I don’t. I’ll experience body chills/pain in my muscles/overall unwell feeling. The only way I know how to describe it is it literally feels like I am sick. Circling back to my main point, which is that I’ve been dealing with this for a long time and I feel I’ve kind of reached a plateau point where nothing is really able to help me anymore. I have lots of products to help me, I have an OBI belt, heating pads, ice packs( if you have endo you know the drill with all the stuff we use to help us) And lately I feel as if they really don’t do much for me. The older I get, the worse I feel. I am in a constant cycle of doctor appointments, pain, depression, medical debt, and disappointment. So this is me asking, is there anyone else out there? That has some of the same problems or struggles as me or feels the same way I do? Or if you work in the medical field and have knowledge about this sort of stuff I’d accept that too. Thank you for taking time to read my post. :)

2024.06.09 15:01 ibid-11962 Worldbuilding and Touring [Post Murtagh Christopher Paolini Q&A Wrap Up #10]

As discussed in the first post, this is my ongoing compilation of the remaining questions Christopher has answered online between August 1st 2023 and April 30th 2024 which I've not already covered in other compilations.
As always, questions are sorted by topic, and each Q&A is annotated with a bracketed source number. Links to every source used and to the other parts of this compilation will be provided in a comment below.
The previous post focused specifically on inspirations and other media. This installment will focus on Worldbuilding and Touring, how Christopher constructs his worlds, and how he goes about promoting them on tours. The topics aren't actually linked, but they both fill up around half a post and so are being joined here. The next and final post will focus on miscellaneous questions about the real world.

Worldbuilding

Creating Magic Systems
Did you have a research process when you were writing the Inheritance Cycle? I put a fair bit of thought into the story itself of the Inheritance Cycle, and then some general stuff as to the society and just kind of where things were in the world before writing it. I put a medium amount of thought into the magic system before I started writing, and then as I wrote the implications of it became much more apparent to me, and I really sort of dove deep into it. In retrospect, were I to create a fantasy world from scratch now, I would really put a lot of attention into that magic system and the society beforehand, just to have a good feel for that before I even start chapter one. I would put more restrictions on the magic too. I think the more restrictions, the more interesting, even the more realistic in some ways. [3]
If I were designing a magic system from scratch nowadays I would put way more restrictions on it because I find that the limitations are useful, I don't want the characters getting overpowered, but also just from a storytelling standpoint, incantations, rituals, spells, prayers, potions, all of those mechanical things are just kind of interesting and of course they give lots of opportunities for things to go wrong if you don't follow the correct steps. So I think if I were designing magic from scratch right now I'd put a lot of restrictions and rituals associated with it. So costs, more costs. [25]
What kind of hacks do you have to developing a magic system? Once I have a general idea of the setting, whether science fiction or fantasy, the first question I ask myself is how does it diverge from physics as we know it? Because that is a fundamental question that's going to determine what is possible in this world. It might determine what's possible with warfare, with politics, with industry, manufacturing, travel times, it could affect everything depending on what type of divergence you have. In the World of Eragon, the divergence is that living creatures have the ability to directly manipulate energy using their minds. The reason for that is kind of handwavy, although I have an explanation for it, but that is the divergence and then I tried to be as consistent and physically possible with it at every step of the way past that. When people play games you always get people who are looking how to exploit it. "What's the most I can get out of this game? What's the most I can do?" That's basic human nature. Science is a speedrunning nature I think. So the same sort of thing. You assume that if magic existed there's going to be someone sitting in their basement who's absolutely obsessive about it and is going to figure out every single advantage that that divergence gives them. And you have to be realistic and work that into your world and say "Well people aren't stupid. They are going to figure this out and use it in this way, and what are the implications, socially, physically, and everything else?" Once I have that then you can think about society and culture and everything else, but that basic physical difference from our reality is just to me fundamentally important to understand before I even begin to write. [25]
With standalones you're not dealing with continuity or what rule did you break or things like that. That's interesting, because I would say that writing a sequel for me is faster than writing a standalone. At least for me, the more I know the characters and the world, the faster, like I don't have to do the groundwork of creating a magic system, creating a society, creating the gods and the history. All that's done for me, so I can just slip into it like slipping on an old glove. [33]
Creating Religions
A socio-political religion in your world helps drive characters or stories or die-hard fanatic characters forward. How do you go about developing those? Have the courage to let your characters actually believe the things that they are supposed to believe. If you look back historically people really did truly believe these different religions and different systems. Too often I think with modern stories we have people only giving lip service to the supposed belief and instead having very modern attitudes toward it which perhaps doesn't always work. That's understandable if you want a character to be relatable to a modern reader, but there are so many examples of interesting belief systems throughout the world. To me that's something fascinating to write about. But the main thing is just accept that when people truly believe something they're genuine about it and then you can follow that from a logical and storytelling standpoint. What I'd also say is, if you're writing about something that is very different from your own belief system, assuming it's not like completely evil, to try to approach it with a sense of charity. With the understanding that everyone is searching for meaning and understanding. I've always had a soft spot for the old television show Babylon 5, because although I don't believe that the creator J. Michael Straczynski is religious, he writes all of his characters with great sympathy and understanding, he's never cynical about it, and he's not putting up straw man arguments or criticizing any of the characters. He's like "They're searching for meaning. They're struggling with the great questions as we all do, and each one is trying to solve those questions in their own way." And I always really appreciated that he wasn't being cynical about it or really shallow. [25]
Creating Languages
Did you think of the ancient language, not just as a mechanic, but also as a parable of our own language? I was thinking about how language itself feels like magic to me. You can write a story, you can convey information. Language in many ways is our greatest tool and makes us human along with, I would argue, our hands, our ability to manipulate objects and use actual tools. But one without the other wouldn't really work and wouldn't allow us to be a technological species. We could have language with no ability to handle tools, and then we wouldn't be what we are now. But I find language fascinating and I find the function of language incredibly interesting. And there is this idea in the real world going back to the beginning of time, that to name something is to understand it, and gives you a certain amount of power over it, whether that's a person or a physical object. And the ancient language is just taking that idea seriously. And I'm not the first author or tradition to do that, but is it a parallel? Is it a metaphor? I don't know if I'd go that far, but it definitely ties into the use of language and my ideas about it. What's crazy to me is there is a theoretical arrangement of words right now that would give us a massive breakthrough in science and physics. There's a theoretical arrangement of words that were I to write it or anyone else would influence how people think about the next presidential election to such a degree that it might actually changed the election. These are all theoretically possible and you can think of many many other things that you could do with language. We just lack the knowledge of what those arrangement of words are, and so we're constantly clawing our way toward new knowledge and new uses of language. [19]
The languages that you were playing around with in The Inheritance cycle, they were Germanic, Anglo Saxon based? The ancient language, the magical language, is based very strongly on Old Norse, which of course is Germanic or related to Old High German. The Dwarven language was invented pretty much from scratch although it is an agglutinative language like German is. And then the other languages have not appeared very much in the series. They're just little scraps here and there. To be clear, I am not a linguist, and I have not devoted the time and energy to developing these in a formal or rigorous way, the way that Tolkien did. Tolken was a linguist and that was his forte. I got far enough down that path while working on the Inheritance Cycle that I really began to appreciate how every word has a history and that history is inexorably tied to the history of the land. It's often said that Tolkien created Middle-earth just to explain his languages, as a setting for the languages. Which isn't entirely true, but there is truth to that. That's what I was encountering and I was realizing that I could spend 20 years, 10 years, just working on the languages and building this out. It might have been a worthwhile venture, but the tradeoff would have been no more books published during that time. I want to tell a story. [28]
What I would do these days, or what I did with other languages, is come up with a couple of words that sort of had a general feel that I liked and then extrapolating from those invented words, figuring out what consonants and vowels and clusters thereof that I wanted. Come up with some more sample words based off that and then start working out some grammar. Grammar is probably my weakest spot since at the time I wasn't really aware of non-English grammar systems and I've put some more attention in that since then. [34]
The language and culture that you describe in the books seem very real. How do you start inventing a language? You shamelessly steal from Germanic mythology and Scandinavian mythology, just like Tolkien did. But I'm no linguist, I did my best, I have a copy of the Nibelungen up on my shelf along with the Eddas, and I based one of my languages on Old Norse, which gave it a nice sound and feel. So the main thing is picking things that make sense for your world and then trying to be internally consistent. [2]
Creating Maps
At what point in your writing process do you start creating the map? I've created the maps at different times in different books. At first I thought I didn't need a map because I thought that a good book should be perfectly understandable without a map. You shouldn't need to rely on anything outside of the text in order to enjoy it. And I still think that's generally true, but a map can add a lot. So for Eragon, I did it partway through the book. If I were to do a stand-alone fantasy novel, I would definitely want to work out the maps and stuff before writing it. [12]
The map for Eragon, the original black and white map, I did about halfway or a third of the way into Eragon. My idea was, and I still kind of believe this, that a well-written book shouldn't need a map in order to understand the story. You should be able to keep your bearings just based off the text. What I ran into though was that I was getting lost in the world myself with the amount of places and things after a certain point. And so I drew a map. [34]
For me I think if you're creating something in the real world obviously that gives you certain constraints and certain advantages but if you're starting with something from scratch, I find creating a map right up front is really helpful because your story is not going to visit every square inch on your map so by filling in those other details on the map you're going to get more story ideas and also ideas for potential conflicts, travel distances. It all feeds into the realism of the story as well as potentially future stories. It's fun stuff. The downside is you could spend your whole life worldbuilding. There's a there's a book from World War Two called Islandia, and the guy just spent his whole life creating this island and its culture to the point of working out the actual layers of geography of stone in the island. I've never actually read the book, I don't know if it's any good, but I know it was fairly popular when it came out. [25]
What hacks do you have for for creating geography and points of interest within your world? When I was creating the map for Alagaësia I actually used a old National Geographic Atlas and traced over various coastlines and then distorted them and pasted on top of each other in order to get sort of a natural feeling coastline. Please don't compare the island of Vroengard to the outline of Greece. Please don't do that. And then you have Robin Hobb who just turned Alaska upside down for her map which I always love because I've lived in Alaska twice. I think she told me that she never actually expected the book to get published, but then she got stuck with that because everything was tied to the geography that she started with. [25]
I think that a good map ought to have lots of points of interest, and the tricky bit is, without getting so detailed that it becomes cluttered. You see that sometimes with real world maps, like atlases and stuff, where there's a ton of place names, city names, river names, road names. All of which are useful and necessary, but it can actually visually get in the way of the art, perhaps the artistic effect that you would want a fantasy map to have in a book or a movie or even a game. [12]
There are world generators that you can just click through. It's really easy nowadays with technology to build worlds just by snapping your fingers. Even with those tools, if you have the time and inclination, I think there is some benefit to redrawing or painting the maps in your own style. I don't know about you, I love seeing when the maps are from the author themselves. I remember Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn by Tad Williams. Tad did all the maps himself, and I love that. Even if it's imperfect or a little amateurish it just gives it a really nice feel. I love Tolkien's original art for the same reason. [25]
Creating Dragons
You are the creator of your own world. Do you feel that you have follow certain canons of fantasy worlds, for example, dragons have four legs and wyverns have two? Or do you feel that you can practically do whatever you want because it's fantasy and you create everything? Yes and no. No because I have already established rules and traditions and precedence in The World of Eragon, so I have to be consistent with that. But if I were writing a new fantasy, I would not feel beholden to any tradition. If I wanted to write a world where the dragons have three legs or feathers or something like that then I would feel free to do that. That's the great thing about speculative fiction is it gives you the freedom to write and create whatever you want to. The thing is when you have a genre where anything is possible it actually reveals the limitations of your imagination. And there are very few authors, myself included, who really make full use of that. But at the same time, limitations can make your fiction more interesting. I think it's important to pick some limitations and that will help actually improve the quality of your work. [7]
Why did you decide to have your dragons have a saddle? I was around horses growing up. And the thought of actually physically being on a creature with very hard scales was rather terrifying if thought about in a practical sense. And so it just seemed to me that there had to be some protection. [33]
When you're writing fantasy and you include dragons, especially a dragon rider fantasy, depending on how many there are there, it's actually quite a difficult thing to not solve all your problems with dragons. I think the solution to that is you focus on the problems that dragons present, which balances out the advantages. And of course people are smart, whether we're talking about humans or elves or dwarves or any other invented species. If dragons were real, you'd come up with counters to them, whether it's a bunch of giant ballistae on your walls, or building domed fortresses, or building underground. You would come up with solutions and it would negate those advantages. And that's always my issue with writing fiction with dragons in the real world. If it's a slightly more modern, then you have to ask, well, why isn't everything different in history? Like if dragons were a constant part of our world, architecture would be different, warfare would be different, politics would be different. Well, no, politics would be the same. What am I saying? [30]
I'm sure all of us have seen the fantasy paintings of like a knight in armor with a lance on a horse facing off against a dragon. Now, to be fair, a lance moving at a decent speed at a horse galloping will have enough kinetic energy behind it to punch through just about anything. It could do a lot of damage. But any decent sized dragon would move so fast and be so strong, you wouldn't have a chance with a lance. You'd need a giant crossbow. That'd be your only choice. The size of a dragon, intelligence of a dragon. Until you get to projectile weapons, you have no chance. [30]
We all know what any creature gets when they bond with a dragon. They get a dragon. But why would a dragon create that bond? Why would they do it? Is it the bond, is it their nature? I think for me, having other species bond with the dragons was essentially a way to keep the dragons from getting wiped out. Because dragons are such a huge threat. If you imagine in the real world, we don't suffer giant predators to be constantly predating and disrupting our world. We remove that threat. Especially if there's magic involved, the ability to remove that threat gets even bigger. So in a way I viewed the bond between rider and dragon as essentially self preservation for the dragons, if not the other species as well. Without some sort of symbiotic relationship, coexistence becomes very, very difficult. That, or the dragons have to be smart enough to just essentially remove themselves from the world and live off in the far off places. But that gets really difficult when you start considering how much they need to eat. I remember reading the Live Ship Trader series and I remember the end of that spoiler alert where it's become clear that true dragons have returned now. And it really was kind of an oh crap moment because you start thinking about what that actually means for there to be dragons in the world again. It's kind of like Reign of Fire. [30]

Promoting The Books

Touring Hazards
How did you do on your book tour? It was a lot. It was a lot. I did 50 days of touring last year between Fractal Noise and Murtagh. Obviously the majority of that was for Murtagh. And of course I had a couple other trips in there as well. I went to New York Comic Con. I had one or two personal trips. So there was a lot of travel last year. My goal is to not have as much travel this year. In general, the book tours were awesome, great crowds for the Fractalverse, enormous crowds for World of Eragon/Murtagh. I don't normally talk about this stuff, but since we're past it, it doesn't matter. I started touring for Murtagh November 6th and then got home for good on December 16th. But there's always a risk of getting sick while you're traveling. And I did pretty well in the US leg of things. And then over in Europe between the jet lag and not sleeping- I had a really amazing dinner, one of my publishers took me out to a three star Michelin restaurant. The problem was the dinner started at 8pm and didn't finish till midnight. And there were two or three desserts, and the last dessert was full of coffee, and I didn't realize it. Absolutely full of coffee. And I did not get to sleep until like four in the morning. And I only had three hours of sleep that night. So I think I got sick the day after as a result. I got so sick on the European tour that at one of my stops I had to call paramedics to my hotel room at 2 a.m. because I couldn't breathe. Ended up with bronchitis for the first time in my life. But I'll have you know, I did every event. I didn't miss a single event. I managed to do all my presentations and made it through in one piece. I've never, never backed down from doing an event, even while bleeding. Can you tell us a little bit about the time that you were bleeding in an event? Well, I was in Europe. I was touring for Inheritance, I'd already toured North America, and then I started in Europe, went to UK, and then I went to Australia and New Zealand. But first country was Germany, and I think I did Munich and Cologne, and then I ended in Berlin. And in Berlin, they had me in this wonderful theater that's like over 100 years old, which is very rare in the city, considering all the bombing during the war. And I'm backstage, which meant down in the basement of this theater. And there's like 500 people out waiting for me to make an appearance and there's someone introducing me and they say my name and everyone starts clapping. And of course you want to get on stage before the applause dies down. And the way you got onto stage in this theater was through a set of stairs. And it really wasn't even steps. It was almost like a ladder and it was wood. And the steps were so old that they were basically hollowed out from all the people that have gone up and down it over the years. So I'm scrambling up this and about halfway up, my right foot slipped off the edge of one of the steps because it was hollowed out and full speed, full strength, full weight, I slammed my shin into the edge of one of the steps, stumbled forward two more steps and did it a second time. But momentum, adrenaline, I keep going, I get up on stage, I waved to everyone. And fortunately for me, because I was speaking to a foreign audience, they had me sitting at a table with a translator and a presenter. So I got to sit down and the table kind of hit everything from view. And I start the presentation, start the event. And after about, I don't know, five minutes, I'm thinking to myself, okay, I've banged my shin before. We've all banged our shins before, but this really bleepin' hurt. So I looked under the table and the whole front of my jean leg on my shin is soaked with blood. There is blood dripping onto the floor and my sock is soaked with blood. So I poked my translator, the presenter next to me that I was doing a couple of events with, and I said, "Hey, look at this". And he glances under and his face just goes white. And I'm colorblind and I saw his face go white. And he said, "Do we need to call an ambulance?" And I'm like, "No, no, we're going to do this." So I did an hour-long presentation. And then I got up and managed to quickly limp over to a signing table. And no one really noticed that I wasn't feeling so hot. And I got behind the signing table, and I signed books for 400 or 500 people. And the funny thing is, I was traveling with this foreign rights agent publicist for Random House named Jocelyn, who was just an absolute beast of a woman. I love her to death. You have to understand, she did a European book tour with me while eight months pregnant. The woman was and is just very impressive. But she grew up on a farm. German family in the US, grew up on a farm. So I showed her my leg when I was sitting down to sign and she just looked at me and she said, "You need to go to the hospital?" I said, "Nope". She said, "I knew you were country. Good man." Slapped me on the back. So I finished signing and then I went back to the hotel and I had to get into a tub of water to soak my jeans off because the blood had dried and glued them to my shin. And the problem was I had a dent all the way down to the bone. And I really should have gone to a hospital because, sorry for the gory details, but what happens is when you get a dent like that, you lose the fat under the skin between the skin and the bone and it doesn't come back unless you get an injection to help it puff out and heal. And I didn't do that because I was on tour, there was no time. So the next day I had to fly to pretty sure it was Barcelona for the St. George Book Festival, which is a walking festival. So you have to walk from bookstore to bookstore in the city and do signings. But that was a bit rough. That actually took over a year to heal properly. I still have that dent. Stuff happens. I've heard some crazy stories with other authors. I'd rather it's my blood, not the fan's blood. [32]
Touring Difficulties
We've got blood and sweat, any tears from tour? On occasion. The biggest one is just being away from home. And if anything is a bit off for whatever reason, you can't just pop home and hold someone or do this or do that. It's just difficult to be that far away from home for so long. [32]
If you're not familiar with book tours, the way it often works is that you fly to a city, you get to your hotel room, you have a little bit of time to freshen up, maybe get some food and then you go to the bookstore and you do your event. And it has to be after people get off from work, so it tends to be a later evening event. If you have a large number of people show up, that means that that time spent talking and signing pushes fairly late in the evening. You go back, you get dinner, and if you're a semi-introvert like so many authors tend to be, you need some time to decompress, which means you probably stay up a little too late reading or writing. And then in the morning, you got to go get another airplane flight and go to the new city. All of which is fine, but going to the airport, doing those flights, with the time it takes to go through an airport these days, it means that the schedule has very little time in it. When I toured for Fractal Noise, the publisher one of the days had me fly from Tampa to Portland and I still had to do an event that day. Which I agreed to. It was my own fault because they had everything on the East Coast and I said, "Well, what about the West Coast? You know, I have readers on the West Coast. They need to get a chance to get a signed book." It was my own fault. But that can get rough when you're doing it for weeks on end at a certain point. You just can't recover. A day off? What's that? But it's a good problem to have. That people want to see you and want to read your books. It's an awesome career to have. [1]
I'm also a big fan of coffee naps. So I will drink a cup of coffee, usually my second cup of coffee, and then I'll go take a nap, and I will nap for about 30 minutes, because after 30 minutes the coffee wakes me up. And I find that 15 to 30 minutes is the perfect length of a nap for me, and if I go past that, I need to sleep for about three hours, because otherwise I get into the middle of a REM cycle, and if I wake up in the middle of a REM cycle, I'm just like groggy and drugged, and I feel worse than if I hadn't napped at all. And then of course, if you're on book tour, the way I have been for a while, you gain the ability to just close your eyes at any point and take a 10 minute nap 15 minute nap anywhere, and it at least helps you stay upright. [19]
Meeting Fans around the World
You just got back from the U.S. leg of your book tour — who’s making up the crowd? The readership is broad and probably older than it was back in the day. There are still a lot of 8-year-olds, but now there are grandparents, too. I’ve even met some kids who’ve been named after the characters, which is pretty amazing. Because people have been reading the series for so long, I tend to get a mix of incredibly detailed, hyper-focused, deep-dive questions about some of the lore, but also some more general ones about Eragon’s name. [16]
I'm sure you hear personal stories all the time especially at your readings and your your appearances. It must be lovely, and I guess overwhelming to connect with your fans. That's a good way of putting it: lovely and overwhelming. Everyone has their own personal history with these books. I have people showing up who named their children after the characters, or who've gotten tattoos. Oh my goodness, what's the one you get? Multiple Saphiras, Aryas, Rorans, a couple of Eragons. As a writer, you want people to read your stories, enjoy them, be affected by them. If they're affected so strongly they name their children after your characters, you feel pretty good about it. [28]
Are your European fans different from your American fans? I actually haven't met any children here who are named after characters from my books. That seems to be an American phenomenon. The language barrier sometimes makes it a little more difficult to talk to European fans. But the love for Eragon is just as strong in Europe as it is in the US. This is not your first time on tour in Europe. Is there something you're missing here? I actually noticed that hotels in Europe usually don't have ironing boards or irons. This is standard equipment in America. [24]
My great-grandmother was from Sicily and then my grandfather was from Bologna. I just found out recently that my grandfather as a child was tutored by Fellini's wife. [7]
My grandfather was the stereotype of an elderly Italian gentleman. He had a mustache, he cooked spaghetti and he made the most amazing red sauce for the spaghetti. He used too much profanity. He was quite the character. [35]
Amsterdam is a beautiful city, but if I had grown up here I would probably still have written fantasy, but it would probably have influenced the type of fantasy I write. [23]
I was just in Stockholm on book tour for my latest book. And I've sold a really large number of books, proportionally in Sweden, and I'd never been there before. And I was kind of curious what their thoughts and feelings were on it, given the fact that I have shamelessly pillaged, Anglo-Saxon Scandinavian mythology for my own work. And they said native Swedish authors don't write using their own mythology, they go into the more literary veins and they import and translate other authors who are writing about Scandinavian mythology and they enjoy it immensely, but it doesn't seem to be a homegrown thing for them, which is rather odd, I think. [30]
Old Norse is not so far from German, do you speak a little bit of German? I understand a fair bit. When I've done presentations in Germany, I've had children ask me questions in German, and I can sometimes understand the entire question without translation, but I only speak a few words. [Host 2]: Let's try it. Can you ask the next question in German? Of course. Oh dear. Translation please. That was not fair. But funny. Yeah, I was just asking, when you started writing the book, and it became not just one book, it became a whole world, it became a series, and I don't want to spoil anything, but if you read the first books and you read the later books, stuff comes up again, and it seems like you actually knew where it was going when you started writing, which is again insane because you were 15. Is that something you just got lucky, or did you really plan for a whole series when you started writing the first one? I planned because I tried writing some stories before Eragon, and I never got past the first five or ten pages because I didn't have a story. I would only have an inciting incident, like a young man finds a dragon egg in the forest. Well, fun, awesome, but that's not a story. So Eragon and the series as it was, was a writing exercise for myself to see if I could outline, plot, and then write at least the first book of a series. So yes, if you read the first book, Eragon, there's actually a scene, a dream sequence in the first book. And it is the very last scene of the last book. And I did that specifically so that I could point to it and say to my readers, "See, I knew what I was doing." But of course, it isn't the last book now. [2]
Before he finished signing them all he asked if I read Fractal Noise, I said yes. He then asked how I liked it. I said I liked To Sleep far more. And to be fair I did. But I could've been a little more less brunt about it. All in all I'm sorry Paolini. I hope you see this. Dude -- No need to apologize! I was the one who put you on the spot. I was just curious about Fractal Noise as it's pretty different from what I normally write. That said, I'm a big boy, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest if someone prefers one book over another. [R]
Have you been on TikTok? How do you find it? I have an account that my assistants post content on for me because I don't have the time and I don't want it on my phone, but it has been a really useful way to connect with readers, and I had a lot of people who came up during my book tour end of last year, who said that they found out about the events I was doing from the posts on TikTok. [33]
Outside of the tour, did you do anything to personally celebrate the release of Murtagh? No. Not to sound blase, but this isn't my first book I've released. Going on the tour is the celebration. Getting to meet the fans. It's an enormous expenditure of energy, time, effort, and it's very joyous and touching and meaningful for me. And I think for a lot of the readers. So that's the celebration. My team and I, we all kind of take a moment to pat ourselves on the back every time a book comes out and then it's back to the grind a bit. Also, I got to celebrate my 40th birthday while on book tour, and I got to celebrate it with my editor, my publicist, my former publicist who's been with me since the beginning. So that was really nice. [32]
Appearance
Being an author is like the best kind of semi-celebrity, because nine times out of ten, no one knows who you are, you can live a nice quiet life, and then you get to go out and meet people who like your work. And that's a real treat. I grew the beard partly to keep people from recognizing me. But then I've had it for so long that it doesn't work anymore. And I got tired of shaving. But the problem is the beard takes so much time and effort to take care of it, it doesn't save me any time. [1]
Did your hat end up getting fixed post-tour? Yup. Fixed it myself with a rivet. [T]
Any advice on how to wear a pirate's hat without it being weird? It's very simple. There's one ingredient. You wear it with confidence. That's all. [36]
Signing Books
People people don't maybe don't realize what an endurance race it is, especially when when books are this big and successful. Like the amount. I once did 9,280 books in an afternoon and a half at a warehouse. I had nine people helping. I stood. I find that if I stand, I don't use my wrist. I can isolate the arm. And I just had someone shove it under me, someone pull it out for me, and everyone else was boxing, unboxing and flapping. But it hurt. It really hurt. I dropped my first name this past year. For the first time in a 20 year career, I finally dropped my first name. Did you feel defeated? Yes. But I have kids now and I just could not afford the time and the strain on my body. I actually got two typewriters. I got really bad inflammation in my right thumb from all the signing and I find that typewriters alleviated that. Also heavier like mechanical keyboards seem to help. So I know like Robin Hobb has suffered some severe problems with her hands with the amount of typing she's done over the years. So yeah, it is an occupational hazard. [33]
I have to say, signing 30,000 sheets is SIGNIFICANTLY harder than mining or placing 30k blocks in #Minecraft. Lol. [T]
Do you have a PO Box or something? I’d pay shipping both ways to have you sign my books. P.O. box is listed on paolini.net. Just include return shipping, please. :D Alternatively, you can arrange signed copies through Conley's Books & Music in Livingston, MT. [R]
If I send a book to a P.O. Box and pay for shipping there and back, would you sign it? Yup. Address is on paolini.net [T]

2024.06.09 10:49 Copperlaces20 Did any of you guys ever quit or get fired/laid off a job you didn’t even really like, but in this awful job search environment start reminiscing it?

I didn’t like my job, I hated my manager. I was generally unhappy with it (despite being very good at it) and wanted to quit all the time. I was abused my manager. I had meningitis and was demanded a photo of my hospital bracelet while i was delirious to prove I wasn’t lying and was harassed every other day during my neurologist mandated month-long rest to heal from my brain infection to be asked over and over if I was feeling good enough to come back to work.
I was demoted within a couple months of returning to work because I wasn’t proving myself, even though I showed proof that I may still see double and have photophobia for sometime because of the brain swelling. So I was demoted and it was announced publicly with me mentioned to the whole team on Teams. I was humiliated.
After I was laid off, I, and I don’t know if I’m gaslighting myself, but I started to convince myself about how “good” that job might’ve actually been, and that I might’ve been delusional and lost out on something golden, something I may never see again.
it's like missing an abusive partner, in terms of those good times, and it even makes you delve into random scenarios that occurred in real life in your head that make you question your sanity. i started my job, got promoted a couple years later, got demoted soon after i got dangerously sick and was admitted and demanded by my neurologist ti rest for at least a month, and then demoted a few months later where I "wasn't demonstrating the needed skills for the role". nearly a year later, i was let go.

2024.06.09 09:22 WilliamoftheBulk Task From The other side.

So I have written about this before under another name I used to have. People ask me about it a lot, and i’m not that shy, but it just gets tedious retelling it and some other things that have happened, so I decided to give it a permanent home on its own sub. I’m going to try and keep it as short as I can but it’s complicated.
Set Up
I was sitting at home with family around me on a thanksgiving morning. I kind of dozed off, but something really strange happened. I felt like something rushed at me and hit me like a ton of bricks. I leaped to my feet expecting to be hurt because it really felt like something slammed into me.
It all happened right in front of my family as I had dozed off while sitting on a bean bag while everyone was talking. My father in law was the first to point out something on my left forearm. A large red welt had appeared. It looked almost like a hive, but for some odd reason it was in the perfect shape of a large flame. Almost like a flame tattoo. I can’t express how perfectly formed this thing was. Everyone was marveling at it because it looked like an artists work and no way it could be a random welt or hive. Everyone was blown away by its perfect shape.
Everyone was saying I might be having an allergic reaction and I should probably go to the doctor. I had other ideas though. I had been practicing the spirit walk for some time at that point in my life, and I kept it to myself, but I could tell something was amiss and related to the other world.
I excused my self telling everyone I was going to go up and take a nap upstairs. I really wasn’t felling well, but I wanted to get to the bottom of this. It felt like something was in me.
Upstairs, I initiated the proper meditations to leave my body. It happened much easier than usual and I sat up in my room out of body. I have a special connection with the trees on my property, so I went outside to consult with one of my oak trees. I walk downstairs and passed my family talking and kids playing. Obviously i’m not totally in their world so no one can see me. I walk straight through the door and into my yard to my Oak tree.
Blue Energy and ego death
So feel like I have to explain this a bit. Throughout many years of OBEs I came to be aware of a blue crackling life force that is in all living things. It’s like a flow of blue lightning though it has tendrils and crackles a bit. I have been able to reach in and manipulate it in plants and things. I know it sounds crazy right? I have come to call it the primordial blood because it’s like the blood of all life. Or i’ll just call it the blue energy haha.
So when I touched my oak tree it came to life and went into my arm with the flame symbol on it. For the first time in my life I felt actual pain while OOB. The blue energy went into the “tatoo” and started burning it out. There was another energy there and the blue energy had sort of a battle against it. It burned intensely and i had to just bare it in total shock that something was actually causing me pain. When it stopped the “tatoo” was gone.
I sort of collapsed and felt a wave of euphoria.I was in awe and felt this intense gratitude. Just like pure love for my tree, the primordial blood energy, and the great spirit. I have come to know god as the eternal consciousness of existence. The deep intelligence behind nature.
I walk out from under the oak tree, and I lift my hands into the air thanking the great spirit. Then I am lifted into the air. I offer complete surrender to god, and just tell god that I am a servant and that I will be wat ever it wants of me.
I’m in a spiritual ecstasy moment. A warm light has covered me, and I could feel myself dissolving. I knew what was about to happen. Ego death. It’s a melding with eternity and I don’t have words to explain it. I could say it’s like melding with everything but that doesn’t quite capture it. There is nothing like it in the physical world. It’s pleasurable but it’s also terrifying. But you don’t feel any of that while it’s happening because you have no real inner dialogue. You have those feelings after you are back. That wasn’t my first time. After something like that typically I find myself back in my body and in bed. Not this time.
Just the Beginning.
I did not find my self returned after my little tryst with god. Oddly I was standing outside but not in this world. It’s a place with a barron landscape and a dim horizon. I can see a large oddly shaped building. And there is a being of light standing to my left. They are tall. Their faces are broad and somewhat elf like. They don’t look totally human but they are beautiful. Yes… They are the inspiration for angels. They are always robed and have hoods. There is always a soft glow surrounding them. Again it’s not the first time for me. I know where I am at. I have been given an invitation to the infirmary, she is going to guide me into hell.
So I say Hell for dramatic affect haha. The infirmary is a hospital. It is the inspiration for Hell, but the people there are trying to heal and there are many rooms and places there that have nothing to do with dis regulated spirits. The beings of light are there working on everyone. While our egos interpret these things as places, they are actually more like states. You can still be alive and have part of you in the infirmary. It’s weird and I don’t fully understand it, but a lot happens here because obviously this is where spiritual drama unfolds.
I know what I am supposed to do. Like I said, I have been here before. Another long story. I follow her into the infirmary a little nervous but not scared. They provide a sort of force field for you if you have been invited. The spirits there are very needy and they try to get to you and engage you constantly. Sadly it reminds me of a skilled nursing faculty where old people will yell help and try to get to you. It’s unsettling though because as you walk through they reach for you just like in the movies. Something the light beings do stops them from being able to get to you. If you don’t have their invitation they will grab onto you and it becomes a mess which just ends up with you returning to your body.
So she guides me through the oddly shaped rooms and misplaced furniture of the infirmary. She takes me down into a basement like room.
Shriveled man.
In this basement like hospital room there are Three beings of light, a bunch of stuff that looks like hospital equipment, and a shriveled up man strapped to a hospital bed. I find it odd that he is restrained. He looks tiny and harmless. He is in state of deterioration. He looks almost not real. Almost like Golem in the Lord of the Rings only smaller.
If you knew me, you would know that I am a very straight forward person and in general and very direct. I’m that way with the angels too. Their lack of communicating annoys me and with all this intelligence and consciousness floating around, I can’t understand why they can’t just say what the fuck they want in a normal conversation. I’m not one to bow or prostrate myself just because they are angels ahhaha. It’s not an ego thing. It’s just unnecessary. We are all there for some reason so let’s get on with it.
I look around at them, and say “well, what do you want me to do?”
The task
One of them speaks up, which is rare, and says “Keep him talking.” I wait for more, but of course there is none.
So that’s what I tried to do. I tried to think of some things to say to him. Randomly I can see this tree from a window high up by the ceiling. It’s a basement so it had one of those basement windows. It’s a tree that I remember catching caterpillars off of when I was kid. It’s from the south and had large leaves.
(Holy shit. I never knew why that tree was even in there until just now. It was always sort of a random part of the story. I was thinking about leaving it out, but i figured it was such a vivid memory maybe I shouldn’t But I just realized how it fits and have missed it all these years.)
So I started to talk to him about the tree outside the window and the memories I had with it, but I never got a word out. All of a sudden I was sitting back in my bed back in body.
Some Context / Old Forums
So for context, before I continue, I was heavily involved in on old online forum for many years. Like reddit it was just a lot of threads and discussions, but I become somewhat famous for teaching people how to spirit walk and helping them overcome sleep paralysis attacks. It became sort of a mission of mine to help people. Especially young people because it had all happened to me. Another long story, but I struggled with horrific sleep paralysis attacks all my child hood. Thats why I am this way today.
So being back in my bed a little disoriented from the really long and complicated OBE i had just had. Out of habit I look on my private messages from the forum. I was actively engaged in walking a few people through overcoming the attacks, so I always check in with them because i know how terrifying it can be and some of them are just teenagers.
(I don’t do this anymore. It became extremely overwhelming helping a dozen people at time. It triggered me to step away from all this for like 5 years, and I am no longer coaching people like that)
“Keep him talking”
The first message in my box is from a young man that appears to be suicidal. Not totally unusual since people are always asking me about the afterlife. It had only been moments ago when the Angel had spoken to me “Keep him talking.” So that’s what I do.
I’m. not going to get into too much detail. Jhon was a very disturbed person. Yes that is real name, but it’s common enough so I don’t mind using it. I learned that he was planning his own suicide and had planned on hurting others on his way out. Lots of others. He had contacted me because he wanted to make sure there was no Hell. He didn’t want to have a shitty life then go to Hell and have a shitty after life. He had so much hate for the people around him that i believed him.
This was like 10 years ago, so we did not have a label for guys like him yet. But today the internet calls them Incells. Or something like that.
I become a stalker
So with the words of the light beings in my ears and realizing this guy is a danger to people, I begin stalking him. I do what they tell me to do but in a different context now. (Their words always have larger contexts and multiple layers). I “keep him talking” so that I can learn little tiny things about him in my search for his identity.
I discover all kinds of really disturbing things about him. He has fetishes like force feeding women and some other weird shit like that. Like I said he is really disturbed. (Ironically my career now is working with emotionally disturbed teens).
I start to have some success, and I am able to discover his name. Jhon ——— . This leads me to a deeper search on the internet and across other forums where he has been posting things. I have several of his internet names and I have his real name. Meanwhile I am giving him the attention he craves and he keeps talking to me and giving me information. Guess what. He is from the south.
It gets bizzar
I find a kid in Ireland with the same name as him. It’s an autistic kid that made a video on youtube. In the video the teen is obviously autistic and is saying all kinds of weird things and prancing around at an old rail road area, but his words are relevant. I think I have him. Then I’m sure I have him because he goes to the tracks and lays his head on the tracks. John had told me this was one of the ways he wanted to die. Then the kid gets really close to the camera and it almost seems like he is looking at me through the camera. It’s really fucking creepy and I have experienced shit OOB that is unbelievable so i don’t spook easy. He says really slowly as he sort of sinks out of view “It’s not me.” Then his finger comes up and is sort of wiggling back and forth like he is tracing something. Then it’s done.
Final clue
I’m really sort of shocked how this is all developing as I should be. I consider just stopping it all. It’s not the first time i have found myself in a situation that is like some sort of weird thriller. But I continue on. I realize it has now become life and death and i don’t have the option to back out. I told god to use me, so that is what it’s doing.
The wiggling of his finger has me back on my private messages with Jhon. It’s like he was showing me something I needed to read. I found it. It was there in front of me the whole time. In one of his handles is a number. It’s a zip code. I have his name, I have his town, and I’m a resourceful person, soon I have his address and other details about him because he likes to post online a lot..
He is a 19 year old. He lives with his grandfather. I know his old high school. I can zoom to his house on google earth.
Wrap it up.
I “kept him talking” (another layer) while I recorded and documented his plans and disturbed musings about hurting other people. I printed three huge packets of all our conversations and what things he has said on other forums. I sent one to his old high school, I sent one to the local police in his town and left my email with them. And I sent one to his grand father who I felt was in danger. Then i waited… and waited. Eventually I got a short email from a detective, and he thanked me for my diligence and that the situation had been resolved. He said he might need more from me latter, but he didn’t think so.
That was it. It was over.
People sometimes ask me sometimes why I believe with so much conviction. I don’t have a choice. I’m not delusional and this actually happened to me. I don’t like these things. It takes a lot of my energy and I detach from it often because surrendering yourself to the other world takes a toll and I have others in my care that need me present.

2024.06.09 09:13 DragonStryk72 Valoria Saga (Chapter 2)

Prev Royal Road Patreon
Karghol stepped forward. As Rob he might be scared, but he'd been the leader of the group for a long time, operating as our main tank across a ton of games, and now, I could see him taking that step again, "Okay, first thing's first. If they're gonna pop us out of this from the outside, then that's not on us, but we've all seen this anime. If they're not coming, then we need to get to the endgame as fast as possible."
"Nope," I shook my head, surprising even myself at how quickly I'd said something.
He turned, "What? I mean, we gotta get out ahead of this."
"In most games, I'd agree, but not here, not in this game. Also, side-point but decision time for everyone: Real names or character names? I can't keep flipping between them. Lugh is what's on my party registry, so I'm sticking with Lugh," It seemed small but wasn't.
I'd learned well enough that giving people all of the information was most often counter-productive at best. Giving people a small, immediate choice was far preferable and got them on the path to understanding better. Temur snorted slightly at the absurdity, "Well, I suppose you can call me either Temur, or Temur. Whichever floats your boat."
Several groans came out, and finally, some laughter. I mean, it was dad joke humor to be sure, but jokes were probably going to become a much more specific thing for us. From there, everyone chose their character names, either because it was simply easier given the nametags in our party rotation, or because they just didn't want everyone knowing their real ones. Khargol however, was a slight agitated, "Alright, so why not speedrun it?"
"Because speedrunners die and reset constantly."
The slight mirth died out in the room, but Khargol wasn't ready to yield the point, "I've watched you do a no-death run of Dark Souls!"
I nodded, "And do you have any idea how many times I died in that game getting to that level of skill? Look, this isn't Dark Souls. That game has set difficulty levels. Yeah, it's got solid AI, but here? The AI adapts to tactics, and I'm pretty sure the beta test players are about to learn that the hard way."
Everyone was a bit curious at the statement, but it was Shelara who spoke up, "What does that 'adaptive AI' mean?"
I sighed, and took a seat at the head of the table, with Khargol finally sitting down next to me, "It means the AI of the system is learning. Beta testers essentially get to play ahead of the general public to try and stress test the system under actual play conditions. Most usually, they'll try to learn as many exploits as possible, so even if they start out on brand new characters, they're still going to be far ahead of the pack, getting gear and coin ahead of others. Assume that the beta testers have watched things like SAO or other 'trapped in a video game' style series, and they're doing the same as Khargol is suggesting. Problem is, that's exactly what a bunch of them already did, and if the AI works like it's supposed to, then it's ready for them.
"For Valorian Saga, one of the biggest selling points was its adaptive AI system, a system that learns. What that means is that the system behind bosses has already learned those exploits from beta testers and has some sort of answer for them, and they're going to run dead into them."
Chrysta sat forward, leaning her elbows on the table, at least in part to show off her biceps, "Well if a speedrun is out of the question, then what do we do instead?"
Shelara cut back in, "But... shouldn't we try and go save the beta testers?"
I considered, "Shelara, in answer to your question, we can't. Even assuming we could catch up to wherever they're at, there's almost no chance they'd listen to us if we did. They're just as likely to assume we're rivals, or to think we're idiots, but regardless they won't be following our instructions just because we say so. As far as they're concerned, they already know this game, and we're a bunch of sprouts who are panicking. Even if we could get past that point, we don't know the game like they do, and we're more likely to end up needing saving before we ever get to them.
"As to the other question, Chrysta, what we do now is finish up the starter quests, then we use our flyers to join the militia."
Every MMO veteran groaned openly. Arkadi especially was annoyed at the concept, "Come on, man, faction-grinding on day two? We're not even out of the gate yet!"
I'd expected this, and checked my in-game clock, and swore under my breath. We needed to get moving, with only roughly eighteen minutes of daylight left, "Guys, that's why we need to join the militia. It's safe, and grinding up our faction rep with Valoria opens a lot of doors, not least of which is giving us barracks space to live in free of charge, basic equipment upgrades, and getting coin. That's just the short-term gains. Yeah, not much, but it gives us a foundation. We get the lay of the land, and we build up our strategies. There's another reason though, and it's important."
Khargol nodded, "As militia, we get arrest powers in line with the laws of Farrelston."
"Wait, we'd be cops?" Shelera seemed slightly hyped about the concept.
I nodded, "More or less. We aren't out in the main room right now cause everyone's losing their minds out there. They're all coming to terms with the idea that this place is where they might die, and that breeds desperate reactions. Fourteen million players split between fifty servers, giving an average server population of... two-hundred-eighty thousand per server give or take for server popularity. Assume maybe one percent of that go fully around the bend and get violent, and that gives us two thousand eight hundred violent criminals that just hit the city on this server that have the ability to level up within the system.
"Farrelston has to be a safe space for players to return to, but that can't happen if there isn't order, and that means law enforcement."
One of our newcomers made her presence felt, the elf woman from the cathedral, shaking as she spoke, "I'm Layala. What about my brother?"
Tom... "I don't know. I don't what happens to those who die in the game. Maybe they wake up, maybe they're just comatose in a hospital somewhere, or maybe they're gone."
I let it sink in for everyone. Layala's eyes fell to the table as she slowly wept. I hate this, but sugarcoating the thing wasn't good for anyone, "All I can work on right now is keeping us all alive. This is a fantasy RPG, so for all I know, there might be another way to get them back, but I don't want to get anyone's hopes up. Anyone who knows someone who didn't respawn, we'll keep a journal of names, to see that they're remembered. We chronicle the dead, and if the opportunity to get them back presents itself, we go all-in on it.
"I know we all have questions... but we can't stay here to answer them all, and I don't have all the answers for you. We need to start moving, and moving now. We've got thirteen people here, our five and the eight we added on. We've got enough people to form a guild when the time comes, so we should start acting like a guild now."
Layala's voice cracked, "I-I nominate Lugh."
I was startled. I've been very game-knowledgeable, but I wasn't the leader type. It was never my role in the group.
"I second the nomination."
Khargol. My head whipped around, "Look, guys, I'm not a leader. I know stuff, that's what I've got. Khargol's the one who leads."
Khargol shook his head, "Not here, not in this game. I'm all good for the tanking, but you're the only one of us who's putting out a plan of attack, and I'm getting more lost by the minute. It sucks dude, and it hurts to admit it to myself, but you're the guy this time."
Nods occurred, and by show of hands, I was almost unanimously elected to command the 'guild', minus my own dissenting vote. Well.... crapbaskets, "Alright, fine. I won't argue it, but we've gotta get a move on. Get the starter quests going, and when we unlock the job change system, we'll work things out from there. Until then, we'll break into three parties, two four-man parties, and one five-man. Khargol, you're in charge of the five-man, Temur and myself are the other party leaders for now. We'll meet at the barracks come sundown. We spread out the neos amongst the three parties so they're all protected, and we get started. Don't do any combat quests alone."
I picked up Shelera for my party's neo, along with Chrysta and Layala, and the parties agreed to meet up in front of the barracks around sunset so we could join up together. We fought the press of bodies in the tavern to get out into the streets, and headed off for our quests. I could feel my heart racing a bit, the whole thing feeling like some sort of bad dream, but we would need a minute to get things together, "Okay, let's check everyone's quest logs. Any shareable quests, share them with the group so we can all help out and get rewards. We tackle them from lowest to highest."
We moved through the streets to the first quest, running messages around the city for the heralds. The quest was designed to get new players oriented with the larger city of Farrelston and what factions existed within it. The vast majority of players though, were barely moving, either pressed into the tavern or milling about in front of the cathedral. This was a huge problem, and we were finding clusters of people around, hiding and trying to just deal with the enormity of it all. We were running messages to guards, merchants, and nobles on what was a very low-key questline while watching people crying or raging. Shelera moved up next to me, close to tears herself, "We can't do anything?"
a I halted, and looked around again, and noticed some people who weren't in groups. Solo players who had come in by themselves, the same as you'd see in any MMO, and now they were cut off from the world, friends, family, and no party. Solo players really only existed in MMOs, people who would just fill in the gaps, and otherwise keep to themselves, and it worked in the world of video games. In the real world, though, it wasn't good, "We can do a little."
I jogged over to where a powerfully built Dracon with a sword and shield was balled up on the ground, weeping, purple-scaled head buried in his arms. I knelt down next to him, laying a hand on his shoulder, "Hey, what's your character name?"
The Dracon boy looked up imploringly, his voice quavering, "Umbaar..."
"Hi, Umbaar. I'm Lugh, and these are my friends. Why don't you come with us? You can join our party," I kept my tone even by pleasant.
He nodded sheepishly and accepted the party invite, "My mom's gonna kill me. I wasn't even supposed to be playing the game."
Oh God, no, "How old are you, Umbaar?"
"I'll be fourteen in December."
Due to the nature of the game, the minimum age for Valorian Saga was eighteen. He'd likely gotten access to the rig, and just jumped on, and now he was trapped, "I'm sure right now, your mom's just worried about you, but we'll keep you safe. Come on, we've got quests to do."
The absurdity of our questing was fully growing with each step we took. After running messages, we helped the watch with investigating some local crimes to learn the search system, worked with merchants on trading to get the economy down, and along the way, we found some more solos to fill us out to the party cap of eight. The jobs were immaterial to me, but Shelera and Layala both found comfort in picking up more people, with the latter taking over care of Umbaar. NPCs went about their day's work, and I started to catch on to something, "Hey... is this day... running long to anyone else?"
Games don't use full twenty-four-hour days, using a shorter day and night cycle to give the impression of a world without having to artificially inflate the game to make it feel like a full day. Valorian Saga had, in the videos, been shown to have a twenty-minute day, and twenty-minute night, but as we ran around, it had been far more than twenty minutes now. The sun had barely moved in the sky, which given the rest of the game's level of detail wasn't something they would've ignored. Chrysta spoke up after counting her clock, "Uh... well dearheart, I do believe we've got us a twenty-four cycle now."
There were several possibilities to this, perhaps either our minds changed gear to work with in-game time, or the game had altered to have twenty-four-hour time. Either way, we had no answers for it. I was getting a bit sick of having more and more questions I couldn't answer, but I couldn't focus on it in the here and now. I called a halt, and we found a small corner tavern to get food and drink. I took some time with the menu system, and up popped the character status window.
By statistics, we were moving up a bit, but the main stats of our jobs weren't changing very much at all. My basic stats for movement had risen, but not by much, and the gain was tapering off. That was probably from all the walking around the city we were doing. Reputations were going up in the city guilds attached to our quests, but again, they were minor improvements, and the effective XP was tapering off from doing them. I took out my character journal, a system conceit by the devs that the game world was simply too grand in scale to not allow a lot of notetaking, and did stat-math just like when I would spreadsheet my builds at home. From what I could see, the game had no true 'leveling' system. Instead, skills and attributes were built up by how you played, sort of like in Skyrim, but the same actions would not keep getting you the same degree of XP. A common enough point, or else someone could pull a South Park and just merc wolves until they hit the cap. Abilities would unlock as your stats rose, some coming online automatically like Sprint, while others you had to find a trainer for, such as the Double Knock ability for archers. From what I'd seen online, the abilities would unlock advanced jobs, and certain combinations would unlock hybrid jobs, so a Paladin would be a combination of a knight and acolyte. None of the testers had gotten that far, however, they'd just seen the possibility of it.
I noticed Shelera leaning over to look at my journal, and I smiled, "Just doing nerd stuff, plotting my progression to figure out what jobs I need."
She smiled back, "That seems weirdly normal. What are you thinking of doing?"
"Well, for now, I need to move up my abilities as a Hunter, right? Hunter eventually leads to a few choices, so I'm thinking I'll probably go for a Ranger build. That means I can train up Yndress here as a battle companion."
Yndress had been flying about with me, and sometimes resting on my shoulder, and now, she was curled up by my arm on the table as I continued. Shelera reached over and petted Yndress, "That is so cool. She's so warm. I totally should've figured out a way to get the limited edition... so what should I be leveling up?"
"Well, you're a vagabond, so you might look at something like Bounty Hunter since we're working with the militia. Combine that with another job.... huh."
"What?"
Daeva grinned, "Oh, sweetie, he just worked somethin' out. What do you need, Lugh?"
"Give me a minute. I need to go to the scrivener," I shot up and stepped out of the tavern.
It wasn't far to the scrivener where I could buy the supplies I needed. We'd just done an ink delivery there, and now, I would need paper and ink to work with. Returning, I cleared off the tavern table and laid out a large scroll used for maps, currently unmarked, "Okay, I need everyone to bring up your character pages and stand where I can read them."
Gamers generally do have a sense of when someone's worked out an exploit, and this was one of those times. They brought up their screens so I could start marking down abilities, attributes, and skills. Of note, my Scibing ability was ticking slowly upward as I laid things out. Scribing could turn into runic writing and other more arcane and mundane pursuits. What I was working on became a skill tree system, with the various jobs being grouped together. I had to move things around, and in real life I wouldn't be able to do that with ink, but in the game sense, it was pretty simple. I kept moving around my drawing, finally starting to come into a workable initial system of abilities, jobs, and other things that built off of one another. It look a bit mad, like if no one had stopped the devs on Path of Exile's skill tree, but it was there, "We're thinking about this wrong. We need to get to the barracks. I don't want to explain this twice."
Banded back up, I stopped by our newest unlock: Carriage Stations. The city was entirely too big to be running around it all the time, and for just half a silver, we could go to any other ward in the city. I signaled the coachman, handing him my flyer, "Take us to the militia barracks."
The coachman nodded sharply, "Right you are, sir."
The coaches held four, so we split between the two, and I rechecked my numbers. I was pretty certain I was right by the math, but these things didn't always pan out like you wanted, so it was best to recheck. It still seemed to be working out like I thought, but I needed Temur for a blind study of it. We got out at the barracks, a building made up of fortified walls and barred windows with internal shutters. Militiamen NPCs were standing guard out front, while we could just see some working in the training yard to the side. From what I could see, however, we were the only players here.
Temur's party arrived first, and apparently, I wasn't the only one picking up strays as two carriages emptied of people. He was running a full party as well now, and grinning in his uniquely Temur way, even if he did have draconic features now, "So, I see we're all taking in the lost little lambs?"
"I mean, sure, why not? That's how we met, so why not do it here, too?"
He nodded, "Questing went well, if a bit hum-drum, but you have a look in your eyes that says you've worked something out. You got math time!"
I nodded, "Waiting for... yeah, Khargol went off-road, I see."
Temur and I had shown up with two carriages each, only for Khargol to pull up with four, all packed. That put our new numbers at thirty-two players as he practically bounced up to us, "What?!"
We both shook our heads, "Nothing, man. Never change. I've got some news for everyone."
The full mass moved over to the side of the building so we weren't obstructing the entrance, "Party people, I worked something out at lunch."
I rolled out my map of the skills tree, "Okay, so I was going over my character screen, and did some math. I know what we need to do: We need to move up on every job."
Khargol shook his head, "Isn't that gonna leave us as jacks of all trades? We'd be running pretty average."
I gestured with my hands a bit in dismissal, "Usually, you're right, but here, it's different. The stats aren't really separated here, they're intended for cross-classing, and it's not just the combat jobs. I moved up a bit at Scribing here, and it looks like it'll be the same for crafting and gathering jobs. Move up in X, Y, and/or Z jobs and you unlock a hybrid. So like, say you move up as a blacksmith, armorer, and weaponsmith. All three have abilities building into one another, and that can unlock further abilities, other jobs, a whole classification of things we can't see yet.
"Using abilities works up the stats associated with that ability, and the higher the ability, the more XP it generates for the stats. Those stats still stay there when you do a job change, so you could be a Gladiator working up strength by working the forge."
Shelera looked over the drawing, "Okay, so you think if we take every job up, then that'll make us a lot stronger? But won't we end up with a bunch of usless stats?"
I shook my head, "No, for two primary reasons. For one, what if instead of Paladin, you went something like a Hexblade in D&D terms? Or, Shelera, you take Bounty Hunter, then build up your hunter job to Scout, and you have something akin to a Justicar class? Or Khargol, what if you master every weapon group?"
Temur's interest was peaked at mention of Hexblade, "And what is the second reason?"
I sucked in a breath, "It's a job change system. There's a job change skill, and every basic skill I've seen has upgrades, even if I can't see the end of the trees yet. The adaptive AI is going to adapt to our individual tactics, but even if all of us were playing hunters, we'd all approach hunting differently, maybe more reliant on archery, or snares, or pets. It would force the AI to keep readapting its own tactics on the fly. If we build up, we might just be able to get to something better than the sum of our parts."
Karghol nodded, "And that makes it doubly important we get going on the militia stuff. Shall we?"
The lot of us went over to the barracks, where a guard greeted us at the door, "Hold, citizens. What is your business with the thirteenth Valorian militia?"
I stepped forward, "We're here to enlist for service."
The guard perked right up, "Ah, good. Greetings and well met! I am Sergeant-at-Arms Brant. We are in need of stalwart folk to help protect Farrelston and wider Valoria in these trying times. Dark things are afoot both at home and afar, and it speaks well of you that you would choose service. Please, enter the hall, and register yourselves with Yeoman Granger. Welcome once again, may the purple dragon fly eternal!"

2024.06.09 06:22 Serious-Situation260 What is the best legal strategy for getting my niece out of my sister's care? Father is deceased. [New York]

I recently spent 2 weeks with my sister and niece in their home. It was great to be able to spend time with my niece because i hadn't seen her in a year and because she hardly gets any social interaction. The experience broke my heart at many points as the reality of my sister's strange lifestyle came into focus with each passing day. I spent a lot of time making lists and ordering household items & groceries via Walmart delivery. I didn't have a car while I was there but i was determined to stock the apartment with items that are normally found in a home and things that would make their life easier. I taught my niece how to cook a few things in the microwave, how to open doors with keys, I taught her the different coins (penny, nickle, dime, quarter), I got her taking showers instead of baths, brushing her teeth (she didnt know how to do it properly at all), bought her some clothes, hydrating and spending time outside each day. We played Truth or Dare, we prayed, we beat-boxed, we watched SpongeBob, we went to Lion Country Safari and we practiced swimming in the pool. At the end of the two weeks, when it was time for me to leave, it was painful for us both. We both knew that after I left, their life would revert to what is normal for them: Mom in bed all day on her phone and my niece ignored in the adjacent room, glued to her ipad.
My sister is mentally ill, but I am furious with her for disrespecting herself, her child and our family like this. There are multiple other family members who can and will help in taking care of my niece properly, but my sister refuses to let anyone help. On top of that, my sister is extremely rude, manipulative and psychotic. Shes been this way her whole life and she refuses to get treatment. Typical narcissist! My whole family has been forced to endure the abuse of my sister for about 25 years, sonwe are kind of desensitized to it generally, but lately it is apparent that her behavior has gotten even worse, and only now, after my 2 week visit, are the rest of the family members realizing exactly how depraved she has been acting as a parent, and we are all extremely concerned.
I don't care how hard it's going to be or what it's going to take but I'm going to fix this problem, and I'm committed to fixing this problem ASAP.
Please review this timeline of relevant events in order to come up with strategies for getting my niece into a healthy living situation:
Father of the child got a restraining order on my sister in 2016ish, while my sister was pregnant.
There were violent interactions between the mother and father. I'm not sure if any are documented in terms of police records.
1st CPS case [Oregon]: My sister had custody temporarily taken away directly after she gave birth. Why? Positive hospital drug test while pregnant, domestic violence incident while pregnant, the restraining order id imagine and ber behavior at the hospital when giving birth. I flew to the state they were in (Oregon) and served as a family supervisor for about 4 weeks, told CPS that my sister was a fit parent, and my sister got custody back.
2nd CPS Case [California]: My sister was supposed to return home to her daughter and the babysitter after a night out when the child was 1 year old or less. This resulted in a CPS investigation. My sister moved out of state before the investigation could be completed. Apparently this resulted in a warrant for her arrest in CA and maybe a few surrounding states. California CPS has tried to reach out to her and my family members many times over the years in an attempt to identify her location.
3rd & 4th CPS Cases [Florida]: About a month ago, 2 CPS reports were created for neglect, injury of the child and my sisters mental illness. My sister did not answer the door and pretended not to be home when DCF went there with the police. She then moved out of her apartment ASAP and out of the jurisdiction.
Other info:
My sister is now in New York where my father is an attorney. He has always enabled my sister's irresponsible behavior and also he is the one instructing her how to handle each CPS interaction. His awful advice has led to my sister and niece having to move around a lot because my sister and dad are very paranoid about people figuring out her location. My sister avoids doing things like taking my niece to the doctor or enrolling her in regular school for this reason. She also avoids therapy and mental evaluations for herself personally for this reason.
Both my sister and my niece (who is now 7) urgently need mental health evaluations. I took care of my niece for 2 weeks last month (before they went on the run) and my niece seemed to be experiencing visual hallucinations, "voices in her head telling her to do violence", & violent intrusive thoughts. She expressed the voices in her head comment verbatim to one of her teachers at the end of a Zoom meeting to assess her progress in school. She also expressed ideas of self harm frequently, as does my sister. My sister has seld diagnosed herself recently with borderline personality disorder and has decided to make it part of her "brand" as an aspiring TikToker. She is proud of it and openly refuses to get therapy or medication. She's also posted a threatening video recently on TikTok, telling someone that they need to "get their mom's gun because they are going to need it this week" when she comes to their town.
The guy my sister was dating recently petitioned for a TRO against my siater very recently as did his housemate.
When the first TRO was granted, the FBI called the Petitioner and asked if they could meet to discuss a matter involving my sister (apparently not CPS related but a separate criminal matter). The Petitioner was informed that there are BOLO (be on the lookout) alerts, whatever that means, for my sister in 3 US states, and that the TRO petition triggered something with NCIC which led to the fbi agent reaching out.
There's SO much more to this story but I'm trying to keep it as short as I can.
I'd say the other most relevant pieces of information are:
My mom and I are hell bent on getting my niece into a stable, safe situation, ideally under custody of my mom. My sister can get custody back if/when she meets the demands of a judge demonstrating that she is fit and able.
My dad has dug his heels in even deeper in his morally bankrupt plan to have my sister evade CPS forever. He has a lot of experience with family court matters as an attorney so I guess he thought in the beginning that my sister could utilize the tricks he knows about the system to circumvent it entirely. He didn't plan on me "turning against" my sister I suppose. So now it's like a family battle of my mom and I vs my siste and dad. (My parents are divorced)
Two days ago I found out that I have an eviction on my record and $6k+ in debt from a 2017 eviction in LA County under my name. I've never lived in LA or even California, but my sister has! I wrote to my dad saying basically, "this is obviously name-related. Do you happen to know anything about this?". His response was, 'sorry, that's just old landlord stuff from when niece's name was a little baby." His next message dorectly after this was "how are you?" my dad pretty much admitted right then and there that my sister used my identity to rent an apartment in order to move out of the jurisdiction of either her 1st or 2nd cps case. My dad's response also shows that he knew about this. From the "sorry" part, I confirmed my suspicion that this was all his idea.
I sent my sister and dad an email yesterday with a blank temporary custody agreement telling them that it would be a really great opportunity for my sister to sign over temp custody to my mom for the summer at least. I said that my other sibling would also be an acceptable candidate for custody, if they should so choose.
I also included the case information for the LA eviction & debt owed, careful to state that I was bringing this case to their attention as a totally separate matter.
I ended it with "I hope we can figure out this temporary custody issue voluntarily without court intervention"
My sister is not going to sign it but i figured I might as well throw it out there.
My sister has been living in FL for over a year and my niece participated in online school this past year thru florida but my sister gets her mail in NY (at my dad's place) and her health insurance for her and her kid are thru NY state. I bet my dad set things up this way so he could always say my sister is a NY state resident so that he can represent her in any legal proceedings.
I have researched florida options regarding conservatorship/guardianship/Custody. Going through florida would be the correct way to go but my dad is going to say she's a resident of NY, so it really depends on where the court proceedings start as far as I can tell, regarding what jurisdictioncis correct.
I'd like to wrap my head around the legal proceedings in NY that I, or my mom, or our other sibling, or a lawyer can initiate in order to achieve the goal, which is simply for my niece to be healthy and to thrive and to be safe.

Summary of President John F. Kennedy's First Term (1961-1965) // Echoes of November
President John F. Kennedy - 35th President of the United States
Cabinet
Vice President: Lyndon B. Johnson
Secretary of State: Dean Rusk
Secretary of the Treasury: C. Douglas Dillon
Secretary of Defense: Robert McNamara
Attorney General: Robert F. Kennedy
Postmaster General: J. Edward Day (1961-1963) replaced by John A. Gronouski
Secretary of the Interior: Stewart Udall
Secretary of Agriculture: Orville Freeman
Secretary of Commerce: Luther H. Hodges
Secretary of Labor: Arthur Goldberg (1961-1962) replaced by W. Williard Wirtz
Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare: Abraham Ribicoff (1961-1962) replaced by Anthony J. Celebreeze
Ambassador to the United Nations: Adlai Stevenson II
In the weeks leading up to the start of his presidency, Kennedy went about assembling a cabinet meant to balance various political factions. With a cabinet consisting of liberals and Stevenson allies such as Stevenson's close friends J. Edward Day and Arthur Goldberg along with Stevenson himself as Ambassador to the UN. Kennedy also selected Republican C. Douglas Dillon as Secretary of the Treasury in an attempt to calm a Wall Street anxious of the Democratic return to power. However the most influential members of the administration came not from the cabinet but from some of Kennedy's closest advisors such as National Security Advisor McGeorge Bundy and staffers Ted Sorenson ,Larry O'Brien, Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr, Pierre Salinger, General Maxwell D. Taylor and W. Averell Harriman. The most prominent cabinet members proved to unsurprisingly be President Kennedy's brother Robert F. Kennedy as Attorney General and the "Whiz Kid" Ford executive Robert McNamara as Secretary of Defense. Sources have described President Kennedy's management of the administration as the "wheel with all spokes leading to Kennedy" with President Kennedy assuming an increased amount of involvement compared to his predecessor President Eisenhower.

Domestic Policy
-Upon taking office President Kennedy unveiled his ambitious "New Frontier" program, in the sprit of Roosevelt's "Second Bill of Rights" and Truman's "Fair Deal", both of which failed. The fight for New Frontier policies has been a brutal one with a coalition of Southern Democrats and conservative Republicans opposing the President every step of the way. However some of the early accomplishments included a federal minimum wage increase, housing act that allocated federal aid for urban renewal and housing, yet these were soon met with crushing blows to the New Frontier with both President Kennedy's massive education funding bill and healthcare for the elderly bill being killed by the conservative coalition. Lacking the support to accomplish the more idealistic of his policy proposals, recently President Kennedy has instead opted to focus on poverty as the central theme of the New Frontier, with sources confirming it will be the central theme of President Kennedy's re-election campaign domestically.
-Economically President Kennedy has fully endorsed Keynesian economics, emphasizing economic growth over inflation or deficits. To this end President Kennedy has received much of the credit for the soaring economy, with GDP, production and sales in major industries skyrocketing compared to the Eisenhower years. President Kennedy's economic program has been especially popular due to his major tax cuts across the board, however this has also come with a government budget of over $100 billion with the U.S. running a peace time deficit for the first time in American history.
-In the early days of his Presidency, Kennedy largely avoided the issue of civil rights, seeing it as an issue that would only drive a wedge between him and the southern Democrats that would be necessary for his re-election campaign. However soon the civil rights movement would force President Kennedy's hand as freedom riders being attacked by mobs finally force Attorney General Kennedy into deploying Marshals to protect them. After much criticism from civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King, in 1963 Kennedy finally take major action by proposing a constitutional amendment outlawing poll taxes which was ratified in January 1964. After this victory Kennedy began to become more actively involved and in June 1963 federalized the Alabama National Guard to force Governor George Wallace of Alabama to allow black students to attend the University of Alabama. That very night Kennedy took to the television delivering a speech outlining his administrations new civil rights objectives seeking to fully end segregation in the U.S. and secure voting rights for African Americans in the south. This would mark a turning point in the Kennedy Presidency as his approval rating in the south crashed and southern Democrats vowed to oppose the President at every turn. The August 1963 "March on Washington" created momentum for Kennedy's Civil Rights legislation. This momentum would ultimately not lead to success though as amendments and additions tacked on by conservatives sunk the proposed "Civil Rights Act" before it made it out of committee. Heading into 1964 the administration has elected to table the Civil Rights legislation as they fear another drawn out battle with Congress would damage the President's re-election odds as polls already show a majority of Americans feel the President has pushed to hard for the legislation.
-One of the surprising focuses of Kennedy's term has been the attention given to NASA and space policy. In the early days of his term it seemed the organization would see it's crewed space exploration program dismantled, however out of respect to Vice President Johnson (who was the White House's point man for NASA) the decision was delayed. During this time the Soviet Union once again made world headlines, this time by putting the first man in space with cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. This blow to American prestige has inspired an all out space race, with President Kennedy going as far as to pledge to put an American on the moon. With increased attention and funding, NASA administrator James E. Webb has been thrust into one of the most important roles in the administration.
-On other issues, President Kennedy has signed into law the Equal Pay Act of 1963, aimed at reducing wage inequality between genders following the release of the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women's report which was chaired by former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt before her death in 1962. On the issue of crime, Attorney General Robert Kennedy has led a vigorous prosecution and targeting of organized crime, leading to some controversy for the administration with the targeting of unions around the country, specifically the Teamsters, with dozens of Teamsters already jailed. This testy relationship with the unions has caused some concern in the upcoming 1964 election as Teamster head Jimmy Hoffa has reportedly expressed a desire to "cause as much embarrassment as he can" to the President, a feeling said to be shared by Alabama Governor George Wallace who appears to be currently assembling a campaign staff.
President Kennedy with Civil Rights leaders following the March on Washington
Foreign Policy
-On foreign policy (specifically regarding the USSR) President Kennedy shifted away from former President Eisenhower's policy of brinksmanship towards a more conventional arms policy termed "flexible response". In pursuing this policy, Kennedy oversaw a buildup of special operations forces and elite units. However Kennedy also pursued further nuclear armament and it's said the nuclear capacity of the U.S. has increased by over half compared to the Eisenhower years. In addition to this policy, Kennedy also established the "Peace Corps" (led by his brother in law Sargent Shriver) with young American volunteers going into developing countries and teaching English, helping infrastructure development, food and aid deliveries, etc. This program has been a highlight of the reelection campaign as "Peace" has been the main foreign policy message.
-In the final days of the Eisenhower Administration, plans had been carefully crafted by the CIA to overthrow Marxist Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, with a counter-revolutionary forced funded and trained by the CIA in Florida in anticipation of a US backed invasion of the island by these fighters. When presented with the plan upon taken office, Kennedy eagerly signed off due to his hardline campaign stance against Castro, despite warnings from some members of the State Department. On April 17th 1961, 1500 fighters swarmed the island hoping to quickly inspire an uprising to overthrow Castro, however no such revolt occurred and instead the invaders found themselves pinned down with American air support having been pulled by President Kennedy out of fear of exposing the American sponsorship of the invasion force. As such the force was quickly defeated and Kennedy would be forced to pay over $53 million in return for the surviving members of Brigade 2506. The aftermath of the failed invasion actually saw Kennedy's poll numbers rise as he took full responsibility for the failure and received vocal support from former President Eisenhower and former Vice President Nixon. This would however be the start of a split between Kennedy and the CIA, State Department and the Joint Chiefs as Kennedy felt he had been hung out to dry by the diplomats and military, instead relying on White House advisors and staffers for major decisions from then on.
-In the months following the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, fears rose among Cuban and Soviet officials of the U.S. planning another invasion prompting increased economic and military aid to Cuba from the USSR. As part of this aid, dozens of Soviet missiles and bombers were shipped to Cuba, along with around 100 tactical nuclear weapons. On October 14th 1962, American U-2 spy planes photographed the missile sites being built conforming to the Kennedy administration that Cuba indeed had offensive nuclear weapons. Despite considering immediate airstrikes, on October 22nd President Kennedy would announce in an address to the nation a naval blockade to intercept any further Soviet arms shipments. The nation would hold it's breath for a week, enduring a string of fearful headlines including Soviet ships approaching the blockade, an American spy plane being downed and even false reports of war already breaking out. Finally on October 28th Soviet Premier Khrushchev announced the withdrawal of the Soviet missiles from Cuba with President Kennedy issuing a public promise not to invade Cuba. With the "Cuban Missile Crisis" over the nation would favorably react to Kennedy's handling of the crisis with yet another major approval rating boost energizing the White House.
-Despite all the attention being focused on Cuba throughout Kennedy's first term, another country has seen a growing communist threat, Vietnam. As the communist Viet Cong increasingly threatened the capitalist South Vietnam regime, Kennedy increased the amount of American military advisors in the region from 11,000 to 16,000 over the course of 1963 however remained reluctant to dispatch any American combat troops. In August 1963 a series of crackdowns on Buddhist monks ordered by South Vietnam President Ngo Dinh Diem led to new Ambassador to South Vietnam Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. being tasked with getting the President to step down. Diem resisted these calls from the U.S. however leading Ambassador Lodge to advise the only way Diem would leave office would be by military coup. Despite this assessment from Lodge, the Defense and State department provided the White House with starkly different pictures of the situation in South Vietnam, leading the President to send General Maxwell D. Taylor and Secretary of Defense McNamara on a fact finding mission to the country. This mission seemed to confirm the reports from the State Department of an increasingly weakened position of the South Vietnam military in fighting the Communist guerillas. With President Diem finally losing American backing, on November 1st 1963 South Vietnam generals would arrest and execute Diem. Wishing to put the Vietnam issue on the backburner for the 1964 election, Kennedy would recall 1,000 of the advisors previously dispatched after the Taylor-McNamara mission.
-With more than 20,000 fleeing East Berlin to West in mid-1961 and U.S. military spending ratcheting up with President Kennedy specifically indicating the funds would be spent securing West Berlin, on August 13th 1961 the Soviet Union began construction of a wall separating East Berlin from West Berlin and blocking passage between the two halves of the city. Despite receiving criticism for allowing the wall to go up, Kennedy would strike back in a June 1963 tour of West Berlin saying "Democracy is not perfect, but we never had to put up a wall to keep our people in". One of Kennedy's major accomplishments leading up to the 1964 elections has been a nuclear test ban treaty which was signed by Secretary of State Dean Rusk along with his Soviet and British counterparts on August 5th 1963, banning the testing of nuclear weapons on the ground, in the air or underwater.

Supreme Court
Chief Justice Earl Warren
Associate Justice Hugo Black
Associate Justice Felix Frankfurter (retired in 1962) replaced by Secretary of Labor Arthur Goldberg
Associate Justice William O. Douglas
Associate Justice Tom C. Clark
Associate Justice John Marshall Harlan Jr.
Associate Justice William J. Brenan Jr.
Associate Justice Charles Evans Whittaker (retired in 1962) replaced by Deputy Attorney General Byron White
Associate Justice Potter Stewart
Kennedy would have the opportunity to fill 2 Supreme Court vacancies in his first term, first with the retirement of Associate Justice Charles Evans Whittaker (a key swing vote on the court) citing exhaustion from a heavy workload and stress. Kennedy would tap Deputy Attorney General and former NFL star turned lawyer Byron White who had worked on the Kennedy campaign and served as Deputy Attorney General under Robert F. Kennedy. The second vacancy would come when Associate Justice of 23 years Felix Frankfurter. Frankfurter would leave large shoes to fill as the leader of the conservative faction in the Court (despite being an advisor to FDR and progressive lawyer) who had notoriously feuded with the Courts liberals such as Associate Justices Black and Douglas along with Chief Justice Warren himself, describing Warren's work as "dishonest nonsense". Frankfurter's retirement would come because of a stroke and President Kennedy would nominate another member of his administration, Secretary of Labor Arthur Goldberg to the position. Overall the Court continues to be extremely liberal with Harlan being the only Justice considered a "conservative".

A November Day in Dallas
One of the more widely discussed events of President Kennedy's first term come from a relatively unimportant trip to Dallas taken on November 22nd 1963. A little before noon the President arrived from Forth Worth Texas with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and Texas Governor John Connally and met Vice President Johnson at Love Field in Dallas Texas. Kennedy would spend around 10 minutes greeting the crowd at the airfield before departing for the Dallas Trade Mart building in his 1961 Lincoln Continental. With the motorcade running behind schedule the crowds lined along the motorcade route eagerly waited hoping to catch a glimpse of their President. At one such location along the motorcade route, one eager spectator in Dallas' Dealey Plaza would be momentarily distracted by some shining object out of a window of the Texas schoolbook depository building. Initially disregarding it, after 5 more minutes of waiting for the motorcade the observer again would glance up and observe what he described to officer Marion Baker as a "man with some type of rifle in the window of the depository". Heading out to the street Baker would see the man, holding a 6.5mm Carcano rifle, aimed directly at the incoming Presidential motorcade. In horror Baker would observe the police motorcycle come into view, with President Kennedy waving to the crowd just a few cars back. With only seconds to spare, Baker would draw his revolver and open fire at the open window of the schoolbook depository building. The following 30 seconds would become some of the most important in American history, as the excited crowd gathered to see President Kennedy would flee in terror at the series of gunshots. Upon hearing the gunshots, Secret Service agent Clint Hill would jump from the car behind the President and shove President Kennedy down into the seat as a series of gunshots from the sniper rained down upon the car, striking Governor Connally and fatally wounding agent Hill as he gave his life protecting the President. The motorcade would rush to the Dallas Parkland hospital with the President soon guarded by a brick wall of Secret Service. Officer Baker would rush into the schoolbook depository where employees franticly milled about, some unaware of the attempted assassination from their very building. Baker and Depository superintendent Roy Truly would begin to comb the building for the would be assassin with Baker radioing for backup to cover the entrance. There the 2 would encounter Lee Harvey Oswald, who Truly identified as an employee and was soon allowed to leave the building were he would take a taxi back to his boarding room in Dallas. Their error in letting Oswald leave would soon become clear when Officer J.D. Tippit was shot and killed while approaching Oswald who resembled the description of the shooter given by witnesses. Just 30 minutes later Oswald would be in custody after a shootout at a movie theatre where Oswald had barricaded himself in. Immediately questions about the motive would arise however to this day Oswald has denied any involvement despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. While describing himself as a "marxist not a communist" suspicion turned to communist agents and the USSR, however investigation thus far seems to indicate Oswald acted alone and not as part of a broader conspiracy as Oswald has shown a history of mental instability including multiple court martials as a U.S. Marine and a defection to the USSR before deciding to return to the United States, in addition authorities now believe Oswald had previously unsuccessfully attempted to assassinate General Edwin Walker (a known segregationist and critic of Kennedy). Nonetheless this chapter of John F. Kennedy's presidency would go down in history as one of the closest to success assassination attempts on a U.S. President.
Would-be assassin of President Kennedy, Lee Harvey Oswald

2024.06.09 00:57 amm096 Feels like my life is coming to an end

(HANG IN THERE IT GETS WORSE AND WORSE) 27M. Have battled with depression, anxiety and low self esteem since a humiliating incident my first week of freshman year where after I didn’t speak to anyone for 2 years and would eat my lunch in the bathroom until I switched schools.
I “overcame” the majority of my social anxiety and low self esteem by trying to be hyper successful. I landed a 6 figure job at 20 years old with no degree (local utility company) bought a 4 family house at 22 years old. Still I was not satisfied and life was always dismal. I never appreciated anything.
When I was 24 my girlfriend of 7 years and I broke up. This was extremely hard for me. I went through 2 years of toxic meaningless hookups/relationships and drank more than I ever did in my life (every day). My doctor also started me on adderral. This toxic cocktail lead to many horrible life decisions. I was talked into selling my house by a realtor friend I made about $110k off the sale. Bought an RV and parked it in my parents driveway. Then bought 8 acres of land to try and build short term Airbnb rentals on.
Meanwhile I met who I thought was going to be the love of my life. The only problem is that we work for the same company but in different departments. I had a big insecurity about her dating someone else from our company (lots of very muscular attractive blue collar men) Everything was amazing for the first few months.
Then one day she pulled away without explanation. She would hangout with me but would be very distant and would not have any sexual relations.
I ended up ending things with her and then found out shortly after that she started seeing someone else from my work who was way better looking and made way more money than I did. This obviously shattered me and made me feel humiliated and worthless. The worst part is her apartment is on my way to work so I get to see his truck in her driveway every day.
After this I quit drinking and started dating a long time friend. We had been friends for around a year and a half and we’re always each others emotional support (aside from me dating the girl from work we talked every day). This relationship had its own massive issues. I was incredibly insecure from my unhealed past relationships and she was very affectionless. This was obviously a recipe for disaster. The amount of anxiety and pain this caused me (and that I caused her) was excruciating.
I had been in therapy for a few months and my doctor prescribed me with Wellbutrin (antidepressant). About a week after starting the medication I had a seizure. I went to the hospital and they confirmed it was a seizure. They put me on meds I took time out of work and sought a neurologist.
My neuro did a 24 hr EEG test on me and it came back abnormal. I had thought I’d had partial seizures in the past and in my sleep and this confirmed it. I was put on a 6 month driving restriction. I got put on new meds and also developed a panic disorder. Being so insecure and humiliated left me not being able to be around people without having a panic attack.
I pushed away my girlfriend and I ended up selling my land and the RV and moving into my own apartment (lost $30k)
Fast forward a few months I am getting ready to go back to work in a month and they tell me they need to pull my medical records for my return to work. I need my CDL license for my job and because I’ve been out for so long they need to know why (federally) so now I am going to be demoted to another department with roughly a 50% pay cut.
This obviously lead to more panic. I got put on Prozac which takes the edge off but now I can’t get hard or have a sex drive at all. All of my friends drink and party so I can’t hangout with them. My whole family drinks. My mom is my greatest support system but I can see the toll it’s taking on her. Meanwhile my older brother just got a promotion making $200k a year as a software engineer and my younger brother is about to graduate med school as a practition assistant. (I’m happy for them but I spent my few years of success feeling ashamed for doing better than them because I “got lucky”
So now I am looking forward to moving back in with my parents in my childhood bedroom with no degree, no house, no girl, and half my income. I still have money in the bank and no debt but in todays economy I will literally never be able to afford a house again.
I can’t even watch TV I compare myself to everyone immediately. I can’t drive by a house without shaming myself. Inanimate objects intimidate me because they represent a human putting effort into something and I have failed at everything. I am literally scared all the time and feel so small. I have a constant feeling of humiliation and just a general grotesque feeling. I don’t sleep, when I do I wake up in a panic, I can’t do ANYTHING without shaming myself for not doing better.
I’ve been in therapy, I did an outpatient program at the mental hospital im seeing my doctors. Every day is like one long grueling panic attack. The only reason I am still here is so I don’t traumatize my poor family.

2024.06.08 22:43 Cheesypower Building Helping Hands

I became obsessed with the idea of charity groups arriving on Irvrana and helping the Bissem with various things that don't necessarily show up in the big picture- so you know what? I decided to do it myself. Enjoy!
When the news came of aliens being real, it had been a shock- how could anyone in Irvana have seen such an audacious announcement being made by the government? Yet as the news was streamed as these strange beings from the stars appeared before a gathered crowd of reporters, all three of them as different from each other as they were from the Bissem, it was impossible to refute the claims as being some sort of hoax.
For those like Director Guinelle, however, the news was... perhaps less impactful than it was for others- an exciting oddity, to be sure, but the main relevance it had for her life was that it was an effective way of keeping her patients occupied. The children in particular were enamored with the news, fascinated by the sight of such alien beings, chattering amongst both themselves and their caretakers about countless questions, observations, and hopes they held regarding these enigmatic visitors who claimed good intentions.
It made guiding them through physical therapy all the easier- talk of the tall alien with no feathers or fur a ready distraction from movements needed to compensate for a missing flipper or foot. Pain that would have been an obstacle they needed to be pushed through faded with the distraction of the way the quietest alien was covered in quills and barbs- how did one function normally with so many weapons hanging from their back?
Even the adult patients welcomed the distraction- the melancholy of lost mobility and crushed dreams buried under theorizing about what the aliens might actually want, or griping about them being an affront to the gods- though thankfully the crowd of protestors who believed the same about their prosthetics seemed to have found a new target for their demonstrations, appearing outside of public courthouses and official government buildings instead of harassing her doctors and patients with insults and screaming declarations of them stripping their patients of their bissemity and replacing it with metal and machinery.
Their prosthetics didn't even use metal- too prone to rust, and weighed down too much! What limited mobility they could manage to provide for their patients required much lighter plastics and alloys be used!
Anyways, news of aliens quickly faded from her attention as she focused on her work as usual- signing documents, trying her best to continue sweet-talking the groups her hospital relied on for funding, doing her best to remain civil in the face of complaints of money being "wasted" when replacing missing limbs was a fantasy, reviewing potential new patients whenever they came up or got through the paperwork of appealing for a place in her halls, coordinating between the research teams who tried to find new solutions to improve their prosthetics and the doctors who would need to actually implement such changes and make sure they worked for the patient... The work was never-ending, and not well suited to indulging in distractions, even ones as big as Aliens actually existing!
So her current circumstances, sitting nervously inside of an official Lassmin limo speeding through the city streets, escorted by armed guards sat to either side her, with no explanation beyond the statement they'd given when they burst into her office and 'invited' her down to a meeting with a representative from those aliens? Well, it wasn't exactly something she'd been scheduling in advance!
Nervously combing her feathers back into place and ensuring they were evenly coated in just enough oil to give herself a healthy sheen, Guinelle straightened her posture and practiced her best business-deal resting expression as the column of vehicles pulled into the central government building's parking lot. She might not know what the aliens wanted with a specialty hospital director- one of her more 'inventive' patients would probably suggest that she was simply deemed an acceptable sacrifice by her own government. She did her best to quiet that annoyingly intrusive though as she was waddled through the halls, past onlooking groups of bissem turning from whatever they were doing to see what the commotion was about.
"Ah, the woman of the hour!" The mayor's perfect politician tone was a welcome distraction- even if it couldn't completely hide the slight nervous tremor to his words. The vritalian male's more modest stature was ever so slightly raised- he preferred to wear claw-boosters, saying the added height granted him a natural air of authority. Right now though, his demeanor was that of someone who thought they were in trouble but didn't know why- a flipper idly tugging at the ceremonial garnet of office around his neck. "Quite the unexpected series of events, isn't this? Why, aliens within our city- and apparently with a deal to offer! The tabloids ought to have a field day with this once it's announced!"
"That is... an unexpected surprise, indeed!" she slipped into her practiced 'meeting with investors' speaking patterns with ease, giving a socially-acceptable head-bob of polite agreement. "Though, I haven't exactly had it explained why such a... momentous moment requires my own presence? My facility isn't the most prominent industry within the city..."
"Nonsense! Your hospital and it's research are a prize of the city- a statement of our commitment to bettering the lives of our people, even the ones struck with the most unfortunate of circumstances!" The mayor gushed words filled with positivity but little substance- especially when she remembered the last time they had met regarding certain financial grants for their continued operation. "In fact, the aliens seem to have caught notice of your valiant mission, and are interested in cooperation in the pursuit of shared goals, in order to reach a better tomorrow with joined flippers- er, whatever they have! I for one, have no doubt that their contributions will be valued and most beneficial for us all!"
...Those were a lot of words for him to essentially say that he was missing a lot of details too and didn't actually know why the aliens had taken an interest in her facility, but then that was the way of most politicians- fill the conversation with enough noise, and people would focus on the feelings of the statements made rather than the actual substance. Fortunately, she'd long since learned to navigate such methods of obfuscation, though knowing that he was also unaware of their purpose here made that twisting in her gut just a bit more intense.
Thankfully, her worries were temporarily pushed to the side as they were waved into a conference room, where a Selmer was already seated and waiting for them. The trappings draped across her shoulders were adorned with several metals, denoting her as a military officer- though Guinelle wasn't familiar enough with their system of rankings to know exactly how high she must be in the chain of command. The officer looked between the two of them as they moved to take their seats, and nodded in satisfaction as the doors were closed behind them.
"Thank you both for attending so promptly- this situation is rather unprecedented, so there was no time to explain in... unsecured environments. I apologize for any stress that caused you, but we need to move quickly in order to take advantage of this opportunity."
"That's perfectly understandable, ma'am!" the mayor gushed before Guinelle could finish opening her beak- leaving her to carefully close it again as he began to prattle once more. "Time is a resource we never have enough of, especially when it comes to matters of supreme import! Why-"
"As I said," The officer interrupted coolly, "time is of the essence here, so forgive me if I insist on skipping the pleasantries in favor of briefing you both on the situation. That is," she looked directly down at the mayor, his boosters not even close to making up for their natural height difference, "assuming that is agreeable to you, sir mayor?" It did not sound like a question.
Guinelle watched him start to look offended, before settling his expression and leaning back in his seat. "I suppose explanations would be prudent, given the... urgency with which we were summoned."
"Great." Picking up a folder and tapping it on the table, the officer glanced between the two of them and clacked her beak. "The short of it is, we've been approached by an internal group within the aliens- not their government, but some sort of charity organization- which has expressed interest in beginning operations within our nation. Having reviewed the nature of the offer, the government believes this would be a boon worth accepting, should we find someplace willing to accept them. Your facility, Director Guinelle, is a fit for the parameters they requested, and thus we would ask for you to consider their offer, should you choose to hear them out- and for you, sir mayor, to approve of their operations being set up within your city."
"My facility?" Guinelle questioned. "They were interested in our facility above all others? Forgive me, but... we are quite specialized in our purview, and not nearly as advanced as some of the other hospitals even within this city. Is there a reason we were of particular interest to them, miss...?"
"General Kippar," the Selmer clarified, "and it's your specialization that is of interest to them, director. They are offering to provide their own knowledge of the design and production of prosthetic limb technology, and believe your facility would be the best starting point for integrating their advancements with our own efforts- and for what it is worth, we hold that same belief. Your advancements in the field are beyond what anyone else has accomplished, so it is our hope that you will have an easier time adapting whatever they provide for our own use. Though, I hope it is understood that the government is going to wish to receive access to any of the technology they are able to provide."
"That..." pausing for a moment, she thought over what she had just been told- the heady giddiness of potential access to that kind of resources and knowledge temporarily pushed aside as best she could manage in the face of a request for a commitment. "...the information I would be perfectly fine with sharing- we may even produce some official medical journals to release it to the general healthcare community. For hardware though, we cannot offer anything already assigned to a patient, as it would be their property at that point. Perhaps providing working examples unspoken for by a patient yet?"
"Seems reasonable enough," the general nodded crisply. "Though perhaps we should let this alien make their sales-pitch first, before we start counting the fish in our net. If the two of you are ready?" Guinelle nodded eagerly, and the mayor nodded as well- though he seemed to be pouting about being excluded from their previous conversation. Ignoring his ill mood, the general turned to one of the guards and waved a flipper at him, getting a salute in return as he left the room.
Guinelle fluffed her feathers in her seat, the mayor striking up a conversation about permits and such barely registering to her as she grappled with the thought of what was being offered. Alien medical technology, likely beyond anything her people had managed so far- how much would that push their own progress ahead? Had they figured out waterproofing of the joints? Were their prosthetics capable of powered articulation? The best prototypes her own people had managed so far was a replacement leg that provided a steady base and enough flexibility for the patient to walk without needing a cane, even if the battery life of it wasn't great. Just having more advanced batteries would do wonders for giving their patients something so they could move under their own power! She might need to hear this alien out before hashing out the details, but at face value, there was no way should was going to refuse this offer!
Her internal thoughts were interrupted by the door opening, and one of the tall, lanky aliens striding through. Their long limbs bending and swaying as they moved around was fascinating to observe- so different from the normal sway of a bissem's walk, this alien barely shifted to either side at all as they moved! Their unfortunately-bare face brightened as she (was it a she? Their body was different from the male that had been on the videos from first contact) laid eyes on them all, lips pulled apart in a baring of teeth as she pulled alongside the table, pulling out a seat and setting a rectangular carrying box of some sort down beside her.
Her lips began moving, releasing a series of guttural noises from her throat, before a device affixed to her chest crackled to life. "Greetings and good day," the device spoke in perfectly-understandable speech- even bearing a similar tone to the alien's voice! "My name is Lucillia, and on behalf of the Daedalus Initiative, I would like to thank you all for hearing me out and giving us a chance to bring our work to you. While our races have only been in contact for a short time, it is a great pleasure to be working with you towards our mutual mission of ensuring everyone has a chance to live Life Without Limits."
Not speaking their language herself? That made sense- not everyone could learn a new language quickly- especially if it crossed the species barrier. Thank goodness they seemed to have figured out machines that could translate in real-time for them- otherwise this conversation would be much more awkward to parse through.
"That is my hope as well," Guinelle chimed in quickly, noting how the last bit sounded like a practiced slogan. "I'm Director Guinelle, and I run the Prow-Wave Prosthetic Institute, and I'm very interested in getting my flippers on whatever innovations you can offer us to help our patients return to a normal life. I am glad your government chose our facility for the first site to introduce this technology- we'll be sure to get to work right away finding how to adapt any advancements to our own work on limb-replacement."
Whatever response she was expecting, the tall alien tilting her head back and barking out a laugh was certainly not it. "Oh, I am not here on behalf of the UN, my dear- Daedalus Initiative is a non-profit organization dedicated to relief efforts and providing medical care to those who either don't have access or can't afford the care and resources that they need. If it was up to the UN, this meeting wouldn't be happening, and you wouldn't be seeing hide or hair of this technology for months, much less getting started on it." She gestured energetically with one of her long limbs, the spindly fingers of her hand twitching in a deliberate eye-catching way. "However, I hope you'll agree that spending several months refusing children and patients medical care while politicians play their little games doesn't exactly sit well with me."
"Such games are not without reason, miss Lucillia," the mayor spoke up, sitting up in a professional posture. "While I am willing to accommodate your efforts here, I now find myself worrying if we are causing a diplomatic incident allowing you to set up a facility in my city."
"If we were setting up a facility, then we WOULD be in trouble," she answered quickly, pointing an index finger at the mayor while her thumb was held skyward- some sort of human gesture? "After all, they don't want anybody contaminating culture, especially with a new uplift, and telling them we just want to help people who've already lost limbs doesn't really seem to work. However," her finger swung around to point at Guinelle, "if an EXISTING facility were to request the Daedalus Initiative provide aid, then the SC's charters on charities and relief workers would leave us free to provide as much aid as possible, so long as it is confined to within that existing facility!"
Blinking at the energetic display, Guinelle crossed her flippers in front of her beak, considering the boisterous human as a few missing pieces clicked into place. "Well, that certainly sounds like it would be beneficial for your organization- if such a request was to be made, could you give us some examples of what might be offered to us? I can't imagine you already have prosthetics ready-made for bissem just yet."
"Well, not specifically, but we do have something that should be easy to adjust to the required specifications!" Reaching down into her case, the human pulled out a technological pad, then started fiddling with it as images popped up and scrolled along the screen- what a marvelous piece of technology that would be! Just imagine how much paperwork such a device might be able to replace! "See, we have a species back on Earth called penguins- technically several species, but I digress- and conservation efforts did end up designing some prosthetic flippers for a few members who had lost them due to either predators or human shipping. Obviously adjustments will need to be made, seeing as it's not a perfect comparison- for one thing, your flippers are far more dexterous than a penguin's would be- but I think you can see that the base design is a promising starting point!"
The human slid her dataslate over, and Guinelle picked it up, examining the blueprints she was being shown... and slowly felt her beak falling open at what she was seeing. This... this was something at a level that her engineers thought would be decades away at minimum- full articulation, no cables in need of being plugged in, no external batteries- was that a direct connection to the patient's nervous system?! Did these aliens have that kind of medical technology in such abundance that even charity workers could provide it?! While she was right that this wasn't the full dexterity of a natural bissem flipper, this was still leagues beyond the best tech she could provide to those with deep enough pockets for it- and she was considering this a base model?!
"H-how much are these going to cost us again?" she questioned weakly, the tablet clattering back down onto the table. "Our budget... while we have a decent fund for research and development, this kind of tech..."
"That's the beauty of it! We're a non-profit- and most of our funds come from donations anyways! For this project, we've already arranged the necessary funding in advance- none of this will cost you a dime! Or, whatever currency you use."
"That is... quite generous," The mayor interrupted, tapping the table with a flipper, "though you'll forgive me for asking... are theoreticals all you have to offer? While this all sounds very nice, it's good to have confirmation you can deliver the product offered- or at least something similar, to show you have the capability. That's only fair, yes?"
Something devious sparked to life in the human's eyes. "Oh, that's no trouble at all- I even brought along an example of the product we offer! This model is one I can personally vouch for!"
And with that, she reached up her sleeve, shifting something around... and then pulled her own arm off, setting it down on the table with a thunk- one drowned out by the mayor's terrified shriek as he pushed away from the table, flippers flapping at the air as his chair slowly tipped backwards and crashed into the ground, spilling his flailing form onto the floor.
Guinelle barely managed to keep her own chair balanced, flippers held to her beak as she stared at the detached limb- before jerking her gaze towards the grinning human, who seemed disturbingly nonchalant about being reduced to a single arm. Thankfully, it didn't take too long for her brain to kick back into gear, slowly clicking information into place as she noted the lack of blood, or disturbance, and the fact that she had been asked to present a working model...
"I-I didn't even notice," she stammered, eyes flicking back to the prosthetic on the table. She could see the metallic sheen at the end, with some obvious connectors sticking out... but the rest of the limb looked almost indistinguishable from the human's other limb, which she had blatantly laid on the table for comparison. Gingerly, Guinelle reached out and poked at the smaller digits of the limb, feeling not heavy iron, but some kind of soft, firm material- and the fingers flexing closed with barely any pressure from her touch.
So many tiny joints, so close together, and they'd all been working perfectly- no external power source that she could see, either on the limb or on the human. The way she'd been able to detach it so easily, without any obvious pain. Picking it up, it was surprisingly heavy- a soft material that felt so much like normal skin, so unlike the harsh firmness of their own plastic limbs that she couldn't help but run her flipper along it, marveling at how it gave and flexed so similarly to the real thing. There were differences, now that she looked at it up close- bits that were a bit too angular to be natural, strange spots of firmness where there shouldn't be- but the fact she had to focus to find them, even this close up...
"Pretty good work, right?" the human spoke up, a tinge of pride in her voice- even as the device on her chest clearly began to struggle with the speed at which she began talking, giving a strange echo between her natural speech and the translation. "Not as good as the original obviously, but that model's served me well for about fifteen years now- and it's a decent upgrade from the first one I got fitted with after, well... unfortunate events at my old position." Sitting back up, Lucillia patted at her empty shoulder proudly. "So as you can see, I've got a personal stake in making sure all the prosthetics we provide are the best they can possibly be!"
With shaking flippers, Guinelle pushed the limb back across the table to her. "W-would you mind putting this back on?"
With a knowing smile, the human rolled up her sleeve, exposing an obvious technological port right where her shoulder should be- and with a bit of shuffling, lined up the connectors and pushed it into place, the limb locking in with a solid-sounding click. Dexterous fingers flicked up a panel and pushed a few buttons, then flicked it close as a tiny light came on. Rolling her sleeve back down, the human rolled her reattached arm, making a show of flexing her fingers in sequence before grasping and spreading her entire hand.
"No stutter, no lag, just got to make sure the connection is seated properly, lock it in, and turn it on! Battery lasts for about six hours, and the charging plug is discreet and can fit into any typical electrical port. No pain when it's disconnected either- you basically turn off your connections to the nerves, and it feels more like the arm has gone numb- a bit trippy for the first few months, but certainly better than some alternatives!"
Guinelle felt her chair wobbling beneath her, and chose to simply abandon it, ignoring the clatter as she climbed onto the table and waddled over as fast as she could, eagerly extending a flipper towards the human. "As Director of the Prow-Wave Prosthetics Institute, I am requesting the Daedalus Initiative's aid as quickly as possible. Just tell me what you need from me- anything it takes to get this tech available to my patients as soon as we can!"
"Well, of course there are papers to be signed and filed," Lucillia grinned, the grip of her prosthetic warm and soft as she gripped Guinelle's flipper and shook it, "but once we take care of that, we'll have a ship flying in by the end of the week. I look forward to working with you, Director Guinelle."
"Likewise, Director Lucillia," she beamed, fluffing her feathers in joy. This kind of miracle-tech was going to help so many Bissems!

2024.06.08 22:15 WordLast Child injured in Michigan w/family friend -- while tresspassing on land owned by BIG company -- now what?

TIA FOR READING & RESPONDING!!!
Single parent here, with 1 child. While I was out of the state for a job interview, my elementary-aged son "Jeff" was left in the care of his God Mother "Sarah" at our Michigan home. His God Mother Sarah started to fall ill, and jumped at the chance to drop Jeff off for a playdate at his best friend's house "The Smiths" around the corner (something we do often). Mr. Smith, a single Dad, decided to take all of the kids, including my son Jeff, to another friend's ("Mr. Clark") house, without notifying us / asking for permission for my son to go.
Mr. Clark (the friend-of-a-friend whom we do not know) then took the kids on an ATV ride, also without my knowledge or permission. No one was wearing a seatbelt or helmet. The ATV is only a 2-seater, but Mr. Clark had 4 people total (himself and the 3 kids, including my son Jeff) riding in it. Mr. Clark was driving the ATV in a field adjacent to his property, that he doesn't own. We learned that the field is owned by a HUGE company (one of the largest in MI) and has No Tresspassing signs posted along the road it borders. It is unclear if Mr. Clark was invited to use the field to ride his ATV in or not. I think it is most likely that he was tresspassing.
Mr. Clark was showing off his driving, with the kids onboard the ATV, and he lost control and rolled the vehicle. The ATV rolled over and trapped my son underneath it, breaking his femur completely in half, right in the middle of his thigh. My son also hit his forehead hard on the ground and got a concussion. Thankfully, the other kids and Mr. Clark were not injured.
Mr. Clark lifted the ATV off of my son. And Mr. Smith ran out to the scene to assist. Mr. Clark then ran back to his house and got a flat board and zip ties. Together, Mr. Clark and Mr. Smith -- the only 2 adults onsite -- zip tied my son's leg to the flat board to stabilize it. And then they loaded my son into the back of Mr. Clark's truck. No police or paramedics were called. The location is NOT remote. Mr. Clark and Mr. Smith drove my son to the ER. And then I got a call from the ER doctor explaining that my Son had been in an accident, and he needed emergency surgery, and would be medically transported alone to another hospital where a pediatric surgeon could perform the proceedure asap. I had to answer questions about resucitation, the risks of anesthesia, the risks of surgery, and blood transfusions etc. over the phone from thousands of miles away.
My son ended up needing to have a long titanium rod permanently installed in his femur, running the full length of the bone, and secured in-place with 4 screws. All of this happened so fast, I couldnt get home in-time. And my son's God Mother ended up having Covid. So there was no one from our family at the hospital with him, through all of this. I rushed home, but couldnt get there in time for the surgery.
When I talked to Mr. Smith (our son's best-friend's Dad) afterward, he indicated that the accident happened in Northville, MI. But when God Mother Sarah talked to Mr. Smith separetely, he indicated that the accident happened in Westland, MI. However, the ER and hospital my son was taken to were both in the Ann Arbor area. The 2 different locations given were a red flag, so I started looking into their story more. Thankfully my son had his phone on him at the time of the accident and we were able to get the location -- it actually occured in Washtenaw County! We drove out to the site of the accident and my son confirmed it was the correct location. So we are wonderning WHY the adults onsite lied about the accident location, and also why didn't they call 911 / police to make an accident report etc. We don't know if there was alcohol or any substances involved in the accident.
Now, we are 2 months past the accident and surgery. It has been hard on all of us, most especially my son Jeff, who has had to deal with the pain from surgery, missing out on 2 months of school, being isolated from his friends, and the physical struggle of learning how to walk again. He missed all the end of year school events he loves. He will be missing out on summer camp and traveling too. He won't be able to play sports in the fall. And it is unknown if he will experience issues with his knee and hip later on in life. There is also a possibility that his body will one day reject the rod implant and he will have to have it removed. My usual happy and upbeat kid is depressed and doesn't want to be seen or to socialize. He goes to Physical Therapy 3xs a week. And we have a slew of doctor's appointments to attend. The caregiving is very involved -- he's only just now even able to make it to the bathroom. He has had to live on our couch because his bedroom isn't accessible to him with his injury. I was laid off last year, so I was job-searching when the accident happened. I haven't been able to start a new job because I have to be at home caring for Jeff. Now, money has run out, bills are piling up, and my once great credit has taken a drastic nose-dive. And my son will very likely lose his 2 best friends if we sue. This accident has had a much bigger negative impact and cost on us than anyone anticipated. Additionally, we have not heard anything from Mr. Clark or even Mr. Smith since the accident.
It now appears that Mr. Clark and Mr. Smith are possibly dating. We are guessing that they did not want that information to be known, so that's why they lied to us about where it happened. We also learned that Mr. Clark is a paramedic and firefighter. And we already knew that Mr. Smith is a nurse. The fact that they made sure there was no documentation of the accident, and that we didn't even know WHERE it occured or the details of the occurence ... it just felt like an intentional cover-up. Also, while my son was in the hospital right before surgery, Mr. Clark promised my son he would buy him a horse later. I believe this was an attempt to manipulate my son / bribe him into not disclosing the accident details. Finally, we have learned that my son's best friends (The Smiths) have since returned to Mr. Clark's (post-accident) and have ridden again on the same ATV.
I spoke to a lawyer who said we have a pretty strightforward personal injury case. He said that we could sue Mr. Clark and ultimately get a settlement from his homeowner's insurance policy. I am worried that, because the accident didn't happen on Mr. Clark's property (but instead occured in an adjacent field owned by a large public company) that Mr. Clark's homeowner's insurance will deny the claim. My lawyer said that they will not do that, because then the large company that owns the land it DID happen on will come after Mr. Clark's homeowner's insurance, and that "they won't want to deal with that, so they will settle the claim." My main question is -- Does this sound correct?
Some other questions I have are:
1. Who should we sue in this situation, to cover my son's medical expenses and possible future issues that he will have with his leg?
2. Is it accurate that, even though it didn't happen on Mr. Clark's property, AND they were likely tresspassing, that his Homeowners Insurance will still likely payout?
3. Is it worth it to sue the landowner (huge company) upon which the accident happened? From what I've read, sometimes children aren't considered tresspassers. And sometimes landowners have a resposibility to keep children safe on their property.
4. Is there a way to find out if someone has homeowners insurance, and auto insurance on an ATV, without them knowing?
5. Does this estimate from the lawyer seem accurate? Likely payout of $250k because that's the limit on homeowners insurance policies by-law. And then the Lawyer takes 35% of settlement, plus expenses. So approx $100k to Lawyer and $150k to us? Timing: 1 year total.
6. Would it jepoardize the lawsuit if I reached out to Mrs. Smith -- who recently divorced Mr. Smith? I am very concerned about my son losing his 2 best friends, who are like family to us. Especially if there's not a strong liklihood that we would win.
7. Any general recommendations?
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING & RESPONDING!!!

2024.06.08 21:24 Yonbuu I was so close to fixing my life, taking positive steps but hit a big snag and need help/advice.

So I’m in a really bad headspace right now and I need help.
My current status:
39 year-old male.
Unemployed since March. Pretty shit employment history, qualifications in Audio Production and Baking but no degree.
Overweight and out of shape. Emotional and stress eater.
Fighting and losing a battle with cannabis addiction. You could probably throw in sugar addiction and screen addiction too.
Need about A$7k worth of dental work.
Have about A$7k cash and a A$200k inheritance coming probably before the end of August.
I come from a broken household and am seeking therapy for childhood abuse and trauma that I haven’t properly addressed. Back in 2014 I went to a residential rehab clinic in South Africa. I was there for just under 6 months. It was super Christian, cost an arm and a leg and I relapsed in 2016 when I moved to Australia. But it did give me the tools I needed to recognise the warning signs etc. I did not smoke all that much between 2016 and 2018 but I have been in active addiction probably since 2022. This period of addiction hasn’t been as bad as my addiction prior to 2014 because up until fairly recently I was having some success in managing my life, but I desperately want to stop using. I can afford it, but it’s not a good use of my money. I use a dry herb vape now to eliminate the combustion element, because I do want to improve my health in general, but the marriage of unemployment and frequent consumption is wreaking havoc with my mental health.
I know I can do it because I’ve managed to quit before. I also managed to quit tobacco/nicotine in 2020 and I have managed to remain quit, not a single puff. I’m desperate to get in shape but can’t seem to lift myself off the bed or the couch. I tend towards comfort and shy away from challenges and discomfort. Change terrifies me. I’ve had my dreams crushed by abusive family members a few times and have a terrible tendency to get excited about something, go out and buy all the gear, then someone will say something negative and I get depressed and all the cool shit I just bought gathers dust and I go back to being miserable. I recently dropped a lot of money on a new home recording studio setup, and I want to give a fair shot to producing again. It’s always been my dream, and I don’t want to screw it up. I’m also starting a Cert IV in IT at the end of July. I’m hoping to continue with a degree and just get any IT job that’ll pay the bills until I can afford to produce full time or get a really interesting job in IT. I’d also love to be a maker fabricator or start a YouTube channel or something creative where I customise peoples gadgets or design new cool stuff.
In general, I carry around a lot of guilt and shame, because I have seen so much suffering in the world and I am a privileged white male trust fund baby. Basically, my grandmother remarried very well and her husband set up a small trust for the grandkids before promptly dying. It isn’t huge, but it’s managed to keep my sister and I in education and has helped with some costly family emergencies, and it paid for my rehab. But it’s not enough to set anyone up for life. It’s going to be liquidated and split between my sister and I soon because my grandmother died in 2021 and my mother will be moving to Australia soon and doesn’t want to have to deal with stuff in England for the rest of her life.
I have been in a relationship since October 2017. We met in Australia and we were long distance Sydney to Manila for a year and half until we moved in together in Sydney in 2019. She is an Angel on earth and I am terrified of losing her. In my guilt and shame I don’t believe I deserve her. She has supported me financially since day one and has shown infinite patience with me and my mental health struggles. She is loving and caring and generous, and is a truly beautiful and wonderful person. I don’t know what I did to deserve her love and her grace. Our expenses are going up, we are renting currently and are desperate to own in Sydney. Combined we could probably drop 250k on a deposit and still have a year’s worth of living expenses stored away. She earns very well, A$133k per year or about A$8k per month. Our expenses are sitting at about A$6k a month and very little is going into savings. Even if I was on an entry level A$60k a year job and we were on A$200k a year combined and with a A$250k deposit I don’t know that we’d be able to afford in Sydney mortgage-wise. Partner is very adamant to stay in Sydney. I would not be averse to going to Brisbane to be near my sister and her kids, and my mum when she comes. Or even Melbourne for the milder weather and slightly better prices.
I have contributed to our finances as well. Some big purchases have been from me, I treat us to good food and take us places and drive everywhere. I have had some odd jobs here and there but haven’t managed to really hold it down for more than a year. I have a problem with my ankles where my tendons get crushed by my ankle bones and it gets inflamed and I can’t walk for up to a week at a time. I have a history in Hospitality. I can’t just take a week off every time my ankle hurts, and up to the beginning of 2024 I was on a temporary visa and did not have medicare or health insurance to cover treatment. I still have not been treated and the pain persists to this day. I feel powerless that this pain has made me sedentary and angry that I could be fit and healthy and not a drug addled parasite on the world.
I do all the cooking and cleaning and laundry folding and all the handiwork and maintenance etc. I’ve had some really bad luck and I’ve also made some bad decisions. Covid also really fucked me hard, and so has my tendency to choose to do the hard thing over the easy thing, even if it means I’ll suffer so someone else can have it easy. I know it’s my fault and I need to be better and try harder. But we are very good to each other and we communicate well, and I like to think that aside from the imbalance, our relationship is pretty solid.
My relationship with my dad has frankly always been shit. He abused us frequently, my mum eventually got sick of it and they divorced almost 15 years ago. We maintained low contact, and then he had a heart attack in 2011 and I tried really hard to forgive him, not just for his sake but mostly for mine. I carry around so much rage and anger that he fucked me up so hard. But I also have to take responsibility for how I deal with things, and my decisions, and my life. He has made some necessary changes to not have another heart attack, and he has improved a bit. After the divorce he got a good chunk of money, then he went back to his home country and pissed it all away within 4 years, then returned to England when the money ran out and has been working and saving for his retirement ever since. He has also done alright, but he wants to pack up and move to Australia as well to be with my sister and her kids. I didn’t talk to him for 2 years after I proposed to my fiancée, he just didn’t seem interested at all.
I reached out to him again because I felt like I would regret it for the rest of my life if we never got to patch things up. But he’s also such a mess. He is so manipulative. He lied to me about having cancer when my mum was divorcing him. He knew I would beg her not to leave him because we need to look after him while he gets his cancer treatment. There was no cancer. I begged her anyway. He used my love for him as a weapon against me. He would argue with her, then disappear for days at a time while we were at home. He would instruct his friends to say he wasn’t there when we would call asking if they knew where he was. He once won 7k pounds at the casino and came home all happy, laid it out on the bed and everything to count it. We went to bed happy, but he couldn’t sleep. So he went back to the casino, lost the 7k he’d won, then came home, stole another 10k out of the safe and lost that too. Can’t believe my mum stayed with him after that but here we are. He threatened to hurt himself so many times, and when I was maybe 7 or 8 I heard him tell my mum he was going to drink a bottle of whiskey and drunk drive 100mph on the highway and crash, me and my sister would try to hide his keys and lay on the ground behind the car so he couldn’t leave.
I don’t want to lose my dad. I feel like I never had him really. He never taught me how to be a man, only ever gave me bad examples, but I guess now I know exactly how to identify bullshit and how not to treat people if I want to still be in their lives. He’s an unhealthy 66 and will probably die soon. All his siblings have been dropping like flies. This life is such fucking bullshit. I don’t want to lose my parents. He hasn’t got enough money saved up to buy a place in Australia. If I know anything about him, he will try to buy a place in QLD, live with me rent free while he collects on his property and he will fuck up the relationship I’ve built with my partner by overstaying his welcome and acting like the victim. He will probably happily destroy my life to fund his and I will have to refuse to help him and possibly end whatever vestige of a relationship we still have.
I really need help to unfuck my life. I need a daily schedule, goals to stick to and to not lose sight. Partner and I are almost 40 still with no kids and we want to have a baby and I don’t know if I’m ready to manage a child when I can barely hold my own life together. Please help me, Reddit. I don’t want to lose everything I’ve built, I don’t want to fritter away my remaining years and my money that, let’s be honest, I haven’t earned, but maybe it’ll help put me on the housing market or start a business or something good for my future.
Sorry for the rant, mods please remove if inappropriate.

2024.06.08 19:05 akurgo Follow up: Movies/TV Shows that share the same letter bank

I made a Matlab script for checking if words/sentences in a list use exactly the same letters, and applied it to the question on movies/TV shows posed in this post. It's a bit primitive and will get matches for remakes/sequels and ignore anything that is not in the English alphabet. But sifting through the results yields some good cases.
For starters I used the 2500 movies challenge list, with curated results shown below, some lame, some interesting:
I did the same for the Wikipedia pages for List of films and List of television programs, which gave thousands of results with a lot more garbage. Here are some selected results:

2024.06.08 19:00 mongrelbifana Reminiscing India-Pakistan: A Somewhat Personal and Overall History From my Time (Original Content with Links)

I grew up in the early 90’s, an annoying little vitamin deficient kid destined to be a failed cricketer. That being said, two generations of my family tried their hand at domestic cricket, and for all its worth, at least I’ve exchanged a few letters with Sachin Tendulkar. I began watching India-Pakistan games in these dusty Doordarshan/Box TV ridden 90’s, and before me my parents, grandparents all watched or interacted with India-Pakistan sports at some point (note that hockey was rather huge earlier, something today’s generation might not be able to compute). Of course, like everything else, things have progressed and declined in relative terms.
One of my father’s favorite batters was Zaheer Abbas, who in turn had great respect for Sunil Gavaskar, who in turn stayed in a neighboring building to ours during his younger days in Mumbai. He described his batting as pure class and ‘smooth flamboyance’, a term he also used for the wristy Gundappa Vishwanath. It’s fair to say Pakistan dominated the 80’s and 90’s, but one aberration was this game where we actually defended 125 at Sharjah — a venue that’s almost been a second home for Pakistan and hosted a bunch of great encounters — one can’t forget the last ball six by the steely-nerved Javed Miandad off Chetan Sharma. Miandad really embodied what we in Mumbai like to call ‘khadoos’; skill, yes, but tremendous gumption. Miandad was also truly box office gold, as seen here in this duel with Kiran More during the famous 1992 world cup.
I was born a day after Pakistan won the 1992 World Cup, and ever since, Pakistan hasn’t won an ODI world cup. If I had become a cricketer somehow, who knows, maybe this could’ve changed. Now that I’m much older I think only one of those things is possible, but sadly seeing the decline in the current Pakistan team I’m not sure when next they’ll do well in a serious longer format. More of this later.
Pakistan had a strong albeit mercurial team all along, but when I say strong I really mean it. Their bowlers didn’t need a particular surface and were skilled enough to make the red ball talk in most situations, a skill that later transferred into white ball as well. Such skill demands that 50-over cricket should have just one ball, I think two new balls have killed reverse swing. A battle hardened batting line-up, a great all rounder in Imran Khan, and a team that had a bunch of match winners throughout who needed some polishing but the talent that came from Pakistan was abundant.
The tournament that really got me into cricket was the 1996 World Cup; as a kid with the World Cup at home, a country sort of trying to find itself in the global sphere, a young Sachin smashing it around, and so on. While it ended in a nightmare for us with Sri Lanka being deserved winners, the pure drama of the 1996 quarter-final between India and Pakistan at Bengaluru was glorious. First Jadeja whacking Waqar Younis, then the Pakistani openers whacking our bowlers, Aamir Sohail sledging a lanky Venkatesh Prasad only to have his off-stump cartwheeling was just stunning. We didn’t watch it on YouTube, we saw it live in some humid cove of an apartment married by gossamer and aged electrical circuits.
On either side, we relished a couple of stylish left handed openers. Today we’re seeing a tournament play out in the US, but much before, 1997 had an electric series called Sahara Friendship Cup hosted by Toronto — ODI’s played with a red ball and overcast skies really cooking whatever transpired under. Sourav Ganguly took a bucket load of wickets, including a fifer, and also scored a lot of runs there. It was also the series of the infamous Inzamam incident where an Indian guy in the crowd fat shamed him and Inzamam chased to slam the guy. Speaking of chases, the Independence Cup final played in Dhaka, 1998, saw India chase an imposing 327/5 by Pakistan in with Ganguly scoring a century and Hrishikesh Kanitkar hitting the winning runs.
Personally however, the one batter that made me pull my hair out was Saeed Anwar. I hated how good he was, and why he always chose to hurt us was beyond me. A high, round backlift and deft timing but paired with an attacking gameplay — I don’t think the current crop of kids appreciate and understand the kind of players who have come before. An era where Jayasurya, Sachin, Anwar, Gilchrist were openers. Sigh. Of all of Anwar’s innings, he really peaked in his incredible 194 at Chennai, a venue where a year later an epic game was played out in the 1999 test series — here, Pakistan managing to pip the line in a grueling test match, an all time great fixture, where Sachin scored 136 in the fourth innings with an injured back and the Pakistan bowlers just kept at it, eventually India collapsing after Sachin and losing by 14 runs. Chepauk has a mural featuring that Pakistan team's lap of honour. Years later, Pakistan lost to Afghanistan at the same venue in the 2023 World Cup. Venues are neutral vessels that change to accommodate a team’s fortunes. In 1996 the Eden Gardens saw India’s World Cup exit with the crowd literally burning artifacts, in 2001 the same ground saw one of the greatest comeback test victories in history and sealed a new rivalry - India vs Australia. For Pakistan, Chepauk witnessed and honored their 1999 greatness, and in 2023, it hosted their long-brewing downfall.
Speaking of Eden Gardens, I remember this being the venue where I saw Shoaib Akhtar bowl for the first time. It was the Asian Test Championship and we had Pakistan on the mat at 30 off for 6 in the first innings, but they came back with the bat, and later Shoaib obliterated Dravid and Tendulkar’s stumps with back to back yorkers — yes, let that sink in, back to back. In the same game, Sachin was run out while colliding with the bowler, sparking the crowd's to go nuts. A young Shoaib was menacingly quick, came from a long run up and literally ran in with the crowd behind him, griffon like. Sachin or a Sehwag would take him on, a Dravid would calmy block it irritate him. I recall Shoaib clean-bowling Laxman a few times too. Balaji hit him for a six. Cricket had so much theater, and really this is missing from India-Pakistan clashes now. Today it seems more of social media and YouTube hype riding on artificial nostalgia, earlier there was no need to promote or make tacky adverts, the inherent talent and passion on either side made the game worthwhile and extraordinary.
There was plenty of theatrics, characters and phenomenal performances in this period, whether it being Pakistan’s regular Sharjah dominance that extended to other venues, the genius in Anil Kumble becoming the second person in cricket history to pick all ten wickets in an innings, and for some reason India winning the 1992, 1996 and 1999 World Cup games inspire of Pakistan having the stronger team (I still find it hard to comprehend this). The 1996 game also saw the end of Miandad, the 1999 one was played under tremendous pressure with the Kargil War in focus — my cousing uncle actually was in the army during this war and went missing in war for three months, only to return to an Indian base much later. As the 90’s receeded with war and India winning it, I think in cricket India started getting a little stronger bit by bit, and a new captain in Ganguly established a strong 2000’s decade for us. Pakistan, one felt, lost their best chance to win against India comprehensively in a World Cup post the 90’s. This was evident in 2003, a World Cup that India truly triumphed until the final, coming from behind the rankings and scaling new heights on South African soil — this tournament, in many ways, cemented India as a formidable all-round limited overs outfit and Sachin’s legendary 98 signaled a big shift in India’s mindset; this was also the last time we saw the greats Younis and Akram. (Once again, Anwar scored a century here. Damnit. Oh and Inzaman got run out, again).
It’s good to foray into Inzi and co here because soon after in 2004 India finally visited Pakistan (after, years? Someone tell me how many years, I’m unsure). And gosh, this was a legendary series on all fronts. There are far too many individual performers to list out — Sehwag, Inzaman, Yusuf, Sami, Yuvraj, Yasir, Pathan, Shoaib, Sachin, Dravid, Shabbir — just too many. The first ODI game in Karachi saw India score 349 (at one stage we were 175 odd in 20 overs) and Pakistan nearly chased it down with a fabulous century by Inzamam and Yousuf chipping in, losing by a mere five runs. Just outstanding. This was, in all fairness, one of the great bilateral series of all time. Can we actually forget Sehwag’s 309 though? Dravid’s 270 came here too. There’s also a strereotype of Pakistan producing great fast bowling talent; I think this has now waned a bit, but you need to watch this era and the previous 90’s/80’s to understand this, I recall a new Shabbir coming and running through our batting at Peshawar. Sami was quick and skiddy.
Post 2004, India and Pakistan played regular bilaterals until 2007 - a year where both teams had the worst possible World Cup campaign in the Caribbean. The 2005 series saw the birth of Dhoni, some fantastic games where Inzaman, Afridi and company dominated to give Pakistan a series victory in India. I still recall the frenetic destruction of Afridi’s century in Kanpur. I also recall a long-haired Dhoni’s 148 in Vishakapatnam, a legend that later would win hearts across the border in 2006. In Mohali, Pakistan pulled off an epic drawn test that India looked to seal, India won in Kolkata and Pakistan bounced back to win in Bengaluru with Younis Khan once again batting like a dream. Younis was so good when he made 267 that it’s hard to describe in a few words alone. It’s disorienting to see Sri Lanka, Pakistan and even West Indies not have those classy middle order batters anymore, almost feels like a previous lifetime in many ways.
In 2006, India visited Pakistan and won the ODIs. It almost seemed like whichever team played at home played a little worse under pressure, an exception being the same 2006 test series where the first two tests where played on docile batting tracks and helped record breaking opening partnerships to dwell, however, in the third Karachi test things got spicy — Irfan picked up a hat-trick in the first over, then Pakistan staged a comeback with the bat, India reached parity, Pakistan made an enormous third innings score and India crumbled to lose in the fourth innings with Mohammad Asif bowling splendidly (a narrative similar to the 1998 Kolkata test). If Asif hadn’t gone down the dark path, he would’ve probably been an all time great with his rare skill level. I don’t think today’s Pakistani bowlers have that similar intimidating versatility but instead are effective in short bursts at best.
The 2007 series in India in my opinion didn’t match up to the previous ones, albeit some great matches in the test series; the ODIs were pretty much India all along with Yuvraj-Dhoni-Raina becoming a solid middle order and Sachin famously scoring an entire portfolio of nervous 90’s. If only Sachin had held his nerve, he would’ve probably finished with another twenty international centuries and a bunch of them in winning causes. That being said, Sachin scoring match winning 90’s against Pakistan is a sub-genre by itself. In 2007, the third test saw an extraordinary partnership between Yuvraj and Ganguly; Ganguly, now older, probably reaching his end and scoring a rare long ton - a 235 - counter attacking with Yuvraj and upending the game.
But in 2007 something else fell. Both teams lost the ODI world cup and new toy called the T20 World Cup came about. The seniors opted out and a maverick Dhoni took a young squad to South Africa and scaled the peak. En route India played some astonishing cricket and the two tightest games came against Pakistan — in the league stage where a flaky Sreesanth actually defended a low amount against a monk-like Misbah leading to a super over, which, unlike today was more of a penalty shoot out. India won by hitting the stumps and Pakistan missed it. But nothing came close to that final, the knockout specialist Gautam Gambhir in his element, Umar Gul killing it, Pakistan going ahead only to be pulled behind by Irfan Pathan and then the most cinematic last over in history where Misbah almost won it only to lose it all. Joginder Sharma will be known for a lot of things but will always be this first - a world cup winner.
Interestingly, India’s always had the lid on Pakistan in world cups but Pakistan have done well in Champions Trophies. 2004, they won in a gloomy Edgbaston. At the Centurion in 2009, they won again, with a great century by Malik and a teenager Amir dismissing Sachin. Eventually though, the 2017 Champions Trophy final where a young Fakhar Zaman blasted India after surviving a no-ball dismissal and Mohammad Amir running through India’s openers meant Pakistan’s best mercurial avatar turned up on the big day. One felt this resounding 180-run victory would help Pakistan return to former glory, but soon after in the 2018 Asia Cup and 2019 World Cup Pakistan were back to being sub-par, failing to bowl out oppositions, to build partnerships and lacking an overall control in their game. While Sarfaraz wasn’t the best batter, I always felt he had his heart in the right place and thought about the team first. His captaincy ushered in a few important players like Babar, Shadab and more who continue to be mainstays. I feel now that Sarfaraz was the last good captain Pakistan has had in recent times.
The 2010’s saw an interesting shift again. India won the 2011 World Cup with a generational team, one that they can possible never recreate, only the 2023 team comes close. From all the world cups, I felt the 2011 semi final clash was the most balanced India-Pakistan clash in a long time. Sachin being dropped an unlimited number of times, Ajmal still fuming over a missed DRS, Misbah once more taking it deep, Raina rescuing us, Wahab bowling a dream spell and India’s pacers keeping their cool — India were ready to win the cup after this game, and they did. In 2012's Asia Cup, Sachin nearing the end of his career, was dismissed early in a game against Pakistan and Kohli took it through with a stunning 183 signaled a baton passing — we now entered the Kohli era, and Kohli is probably the deepest thorn for Pakistan’s team today. This, friends, is how we felt about Anwar and Inzamam once. Even Miandad.
The Virat Kohli era also saw a parallel rise in Rohit Sharma, Dhawan, India’s bowling attack and the overall system strengthening. IPL truly became a stronghold, and while India never won a T20 World Cup since its initiation, they established a factory of sorts to churn out millions and good players coming through the domestic ranks. By 2015 India met Pakistan in Adelaide, and Kohli had arrived — an articulate century. Post 2013, India’s struggle was no longer to be a good team or challenge oppositions, it was existential; we now dominate the league stages only to falter in knockouts. 2015 started this trend and it’s a telling feature till today. This is many ways opposite to Pakistan, a team that slowly declined over the decade; while I’m not sure why and how, but the general skill level and ‘readiness’ of the players is lower than previous generations. We were now seeing more of T20 specialists with shortened stamina, a Pakistani team lacking the mindset and endurance for longer formats, and an occasional test specialist every now and then. It didn’t happen overnight but in phases, but post that 2019 World Cup I’ve been seeing it get apparent. As for Kohli and India, an intense T20WC 2016 derby in Kolkata, and a comprehensive 2018 Asia Cup outing against their neighbors sat on either side of the 2017 CT defeat.
The contrasting fortunes of teams also complimented the overall growing skill gap. This probably also was a reflection of the nations in general. World cups is where we met now, no bilateral. On cricketing terms, it went from being an old rivalry to India being the stronger unit now, a total role reversal of the 90’s. In 2019. Rohit Sharma hammered the Pakistani attack and probably missed out on another double century and Kuldeep dismissed Babar and Fakhar once more, while Pakistan eventually didn’t make it past the group stage once again. I was galavanting in Europe and missed the rest of the World Cup, which saved me from the trauma of the semi final and the magnificence of the final.
COVID comes in 2020, and Pakistan being one of the few active teams in this period maybe gave Babar and Co more eyeballs. By 2021, India’s captaincy is in disarray and a tired, clueless team showed up as favorites in Dubai only to be steamrolled by a more awake Pakistani team. I give Shaheen the credit for that victory, exposing India’s batting, while Babar and Rizwan chased down a below-par score without losing any wickets. One felt that, like 2017, could this be a moral boost that propelled Pakistan to the top, a sort of renaissance? Probably not, as we come to learn from subsequent results. Kohli’s captaincy also saw its end, but India had already built a strong pace bowling unit and overall deep squad with a vastly stable system. The 2021 victory was probably the most unlikely win when you compare the teams on paper, then again T20 is the funniest of all three formats.

T20, is then, where Pakistan found a way to compete and ODIs continued to seem a bridge too far. The 2000’s were a distant dream. The 2020’s are where India continues to build strong reserves for the future whereas Pakistan seems to be going downhill. While India suffers on selection and big game mindset, Pakistan’s overall lack of depth and reluctance to change ways now leaves their success to conditions, chance and other team’s fortunes in big tournaments. And while the gap is widened in ODIs, more even in tests (a format which, mind you, the current generation hasn’t played in), T20 is a sort of final domain for Pakistan to compete. In recent clashes, they’ve done pretty well and India has underperformed. In 2003 we saw Sachin, and in 2022, we saw Kohli.
Kohli’s emperor-like innings at Melbourne has become one of the milestones of India-Pakistan clashes. The shot against Haris Rauf is quite easily one of the greatest shots ever. But on careful analysis, this match also offers certain cues — Pakistan needs to be in a range of 150-160 in a bowling friendly environment to come close or win. In certain situations, India suffered from previous mental scars. Both India and Pakistan’s bowlers fail to close out games more often than not, and such.
Come 2023 and India are resounding favorites to win the ODI World Cup at home, but this wasn’t the case leading to the tournament, until the Asia Cup happened. A few weeks prior, the Asia Cup had Pakistan as the number one ranked team. India staged a comeback after being 66 off for 4 in their first game against Pakistan before it rained out, but the real mental blow was in the next game when Shubhman Gill and Rohit Sharma cut into Pakistan’s bowling and later Kohli and KL made centuries, sending India to 356/2 before the bowling destroyed Pakistan, giving India the biggest victory in terms of runs on either side. Pakistan never really recovered from this in my opinion, while India sort of remembered to wake up. Come Ahmedabad in October, Pakistan is batting first and collapses from 155/2 to 190 odd and handed India an easy win. Rohit Sharma’s dominating batting seemed to further hammer into the Pakistani psyche, and Babar’s overall defensive captaincy and poor strategy meant Pakistan had their worst World Cup campaign, losing even to Afghanistan. With 2023, the divide between Pakistan and India’s overall cricket has widened a fair bit.
This of course, will disappoint not just the old-timer Pakistani fan but even a general cricket fan like me. I will always want to watch India win, but I’d rather witness a 2004 or 2006 series rather than the easy games that happen now. Barring a couple of T20 games, there is an overall imbalance. In 2021, the Pakistanis briefly managed to get back into the head of India’s batsmen and this was obvious when they faced off again in 2022 with Rohit and KL meekly defending an injured Shaheen bowling full tosses at 130km/hr. This was reversed in 2023, and while we’re aware of the difference in formats, the lack of cricket between both nations means the overall perception and recency in experience is a greater point of consideration.

Pakistan could’ve played the 2023 WTC final if they had played, well, better. I can’t recall a Pakistani test team losing so easily at home. Even in T20s, their best format, Pakistan is stronger in situations but fail to be consistent or dominate in a more contemporary style of play. While it’s fair to blame Babar’s captaincy in more cases than one, I really don’t understand what’s happening in the overall system for Pakistan to have reached this point.
And for India, where we stand now, the rivalry has moved to Australia. I’ll take you back to the Eden Gardens and that unbelievable follow-on victory. The sheer competitiveness and thrill of a Border Gavaskar Trophy is on par with the Ashes, in some cases like 2020-21 even greater. The India-Pakistan rivalry used to be one of equals, a colosseum of characters fighting it out, performances that could be etched forever; this wasn’t in cricket but also in hockey and other sports. Akram almost dismissing Sachin and yelling ‘catch it’ only for Razzaq to drop it. Harbhajan dismissing Afridi. Wahab Riaz bowling a steaming yorker to uproot Yuvraj in a semi final. Such moments seem to be distant in a sense, maybe the occasional T20 brings a few. The new Pakistan lacks the characters and genuine legendary nature of the previous squads. For some reason, I don't know which new Pakistan player I must be excited to see -- is there a new Razzaq or Akhtar for instance? Will there be another elegant session-by-session batter like Younis?
I used to wake up to watch Shoaib steaming in at the WACA in the morning. I enjoyed Yousuf whacking an ODI-style Boxing Day hundred. Inzamam always seemed to have that extra second. Somehow I don’t feel the same now. In contrast when I see India’s youngsters come through the ranks — Pant at the Gabba, Jurel in Ranchi, Jaiswal against Anderson, Kuldeep doing what he does — I think the gap between both teams will get wider in the future.
Looking at that Nassau pitch, I don't know what will happen on June 9th, but seeing the venue, once again Pakistan is definitely in the game with their bowling. Pacers, to be specific. But the batting might be severely exposed. I also don’t know what’s going to happen in a couple of hours; at the time of writing this I’m sitting in a cafe and Pakistan is suddenly 26/3 against USA. They’ve lost to lesser teams more often these days. Well let’s hope it’s a decent game, and for the sake of cricket, we have some former glory of the West Indies, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Pakistan restored.
Special shoutout to some cricket regulars with Pak flairs who've often engaged in banter during these clashes : u/theGhostofCamus , u/phaintaa_Shoaib , u/Ghostly_100 , u/Stuff2511 , u/StraightUpHaram , u/theonlychicken from the top of my head but there are many, many more. Also is the legend robelinda still on Reddit? Doubt if he made this far down in the post eitherway, haha.
Edit: Pakistan eventually lost against the USA. Well. It's anyone's guess now. Only luck or some freak results can get Pakistan out of this hole, the team seems jaded. That being said, it's a tight format and it's anyone's game. If this was ODI, as we've seen, it would've been too much.
I'm also aware I've missed out on a ton of games, events, clashes over the years but it'll probably be a book if I include it all. Cheers.

2024.06.08 18:38 AutoMughal Iraq: Winston Churchill "I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes _ [to] spread a lively terror _". Below is the full article on Britain’s occupation of Iraq ⬇️

Iraq: Winston Churchill
No one, least of all the British, should be surprised at the state of anarchy in Iraq. We have been here before. We know the territory, its long and miasmic history, the all-but-impossible diplomatic balance to be struck between the cultures and ambitions of Arabs, Kurds, Shia and Sunni, of Assyrians, Turks, Americans, French, Russians and of our own desire to keep an economic and strategic presence there. Laid waste, a chaotic post-invasion Iraq may now well be policed by old and new imperial masters promising liberty, democracy and unwanted exiled leaders, in return for oil, trade and submission. Only the last of these promises is certain. The peoples of Iraq, even those who have cheered passing troops, have every reason to mistrust foreign invaders. They have been lied to far too often, bombed and slaughtered promiscuously.
Iraq is the product of a lying empire. The British carved it duplicitously from ancient history, thwarted Arab hopes, Ottoman loss, the dunes of Mesopotamia and the mountains of Kurdistan at the end of the first world war. Unsurprisingly, anarchy and insurrection were there from the start. The British responded with gas attacks by the army in the south, bombing by the fledgling RAF in both north and south. When Iraqi tribes stood up for themselves, we unleashed the flying dogs of war to "police" them. Terror bombing, night bombing, heavy bombers, delayed action bombs (particularly lethal against children) were all developed during raids on mud, stone and reed villages during Britain's League of Nations' mandate. The mandate ended in 1932; the semi-colonial monarchy in 1958. But during the period of direct British rule, Iraq proved a useful testing ground for newly forged weapons of both limited and mass destruction, as well as new techniques for controlling imperial outposts and vassal states.
The RAF was first ordered to Iraq to quell Arab and Kurdish and Arab uprisings, to protect recently discovered oil reserves, to guard Jewish settlers in Palestine and to keep Turkey at bay. Some mission, yet it had already proved itself an effective imperial police force in both Afghanistan and Somaliland (today's Somalia) in 1919-20. British and US forces have been back regularly to bomb these hubs of recalcitrance ever since. Winston Churchill, secretary of state for war and air, estimated that without the RAF, somewhere between 25,000 British and 80,000 Indian troops would be needed to control Iraq. Reliance on the airforce promised to cut these numbers to just 4,000 and 10,000. Churchill's confidence was soon repaid. An uprising of more than 100,000 armed tribesmen against the British occupation swept through Iraq in the summer of 1920. In went the RAF. It flew missions totalling 4,008 hours, dropped 97 tons of bombs and fired 183,861 rounds for the loss of nine men killed, seven wounded and 11 aircraft destroyed behind rebel lines. The rebellion was thwarted, with nearly 9,000 Iraqis killed. Even so, concern was expressed in Westminster: the operation had cost more than the entire British-funded Arab rising against the Ottoman Empire in 1917-18.
The RAF was vindicated as British military expenditure in Iraq fell from £23m in 1921 to less than £4m five years later. This was despite the fact that the number of bombing raids increased after 1923 when Squadron Leader Arthur Harris - the future hammer of Hamburg and Dresden, whose statue stands in Fleet Street in London today - took command of 45 Squadron. Adding bomb-racks to Vickers Vernon troop car riers, Harris more or less invented the heavy bomber as well as night "terror" raids. Harris did not use gas himself - though the RAF had employed mustard gas against Bolshevik troops in 1919, while the army had gassed Iraqi rebels in 1920 "with excellent moral effect". Churchill was particularly keen on chemical weapons, suggesting they be used "against recalcitrant Arabs as an experiment". He dismissed objections as "unreasonable". "I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes _ [to] spread a lively terror _" In today's terms, "the Arab" needed to be shocked and awed. A good gassing might well do the job.
Conventional raids, however, proved to be an effective deterrent. They brought Sheikh Mahmoud, the most persistent of Kurdish rebels, to heel, at little cost. Writing in 1921, Wing Commander J A Chamier suggested that the best way to demoralise local people was to concentrate bombing on the "most inaccessible village of the most prominent tribe which it is desired to punish. All available aircraft must be collected the attack with bombs and machine guns must be relentless and unremitting and carried on continuously by day and night, on houses, inhabitants, crops and cattle." "The Arab and Kurd now know", reported Squadron Leader Harris after several such raids, "what real bombing means within 45 minutes a full-sized village can be practically wiped out, and a third of its inhabitants killed or injured, by four or five machines which offer them no real target, no opportunity for glory as warriors, no effective means of escape." In his memoir of the crushing of the 1920 Iraqi uprising, Lieutenant-General Sir Aylmer L Haldane, quotes his own orders for the punishment of any Iraqi found in possession of weapons "with the utmost severity": "The village where he resides will be destroyed _ pressure will be brought on the inhabitants by cutting off water power the area being cleared of the necessaries of life". He added the warning: "Burning a village properly takes a long time, an hour or more according to size".
Punitive British bombing continued throughout the 1920s. An eyewitness account by Saleh 'Umar al Jabrim describes a raid in February 1923 on a village in southern Iraq, where bedouin were celebrating 12 weddings. After a visit from the RAF, a woman, two boys, a girl and four camels were left dead. There were many wounded. Perhaps to please his British interrogators, Saleh declared: "These casualties are from God and no one is to be blamed." One RAF officer, Air Commodore Lionel Charlton, resigned in 1924 when he visited a hospital after such a raid and faced armless and legless civilian victims. Others held less generous views of those under their control. "Woe betide any native [working for the RAF] who was caught in the act of thieving any article of clothing that may be hanging out to dry", wrote Aircraftsman 2nd class, H Howe, based at RAF Hunaidi, Baghdad. "It was the practice to take the offending native into the squadron gymnasium. Here he would be placed in the boxing ring, used as a punch bag by members of the boxing team, and after he had received severe punishment, and was in a very sorry condition, he would be expelled for good, minus his job."
At the time of the Arab revolt in Palestine in the late 1930s, Air Commodore Harris, as he then was, declared that "the only thing the Arab understands is the heavy hand, and sooner or later it will have to be applied". As in 1921, so in 2003.

2024.06.08 17:15 Accomplished-Cake131 Many Know Marx Did Not Find Exploitation Of Labor As Unjust

Under capitalism, according to Marx, returns to property are obtained from the exploitation of labor. The distinction between the use value and the exchange value of labor-power is a key point in his theory. Some on this sub, including me, have documented that Marx and Engels did not think of exploitation as injustice or a moral issue.
This post demonstrates that others read Marx in the same way. Marx condemned capitalism because he objected to the domination of capital.
Zizek is one who said such in 1999.
John Roemer, a leader of analytical Marxism, said something along these lines in 1981:
"The riddle was, how could expropriation of labor come about - for come about it must to explain the huge difference between class fortunes under capitalism - in the absence of a coercive institution for the exchange of labor? Marx constructed an answer to this question with his version of the labor theory of value, surplus value, and exploitation. What is important for our purposes is just this: The task of the theory was to show that the coerciveness of the institution of labor exchange was not a necessary condition for the existence of exploitation of one class by another.
Marx believed that the conditions for the existence of the wage labor market were themselves coercive - that is, workers had no choice but to sell their labor power, as they had been separated from the means of production, and had no alternative for survival. In a precise sense, however, this simply sets certain initial conditions on the bargaining strength of the two parties in the market; it does not obviate the fact, juridically, that participation in the labor market is voluntary, at least in a model of pure capitalism. This is one example of Marx's 'scientific', as opposed to 'utopian', approach to capitalism. He wished to explain the existence of exploitation in a noncoercive model, in the sense described. This is obviously more difficult than appealing simply to the omnipotence of the capitalist class." -- John Roemer (1981), Analytical Foundations of Marxian Economic Theory, pp. 146 - 147
Maurice Dobb, in 1970, noted Marx's engagement with Ricardian socialists:
"It is in the same context that we must understand the importance which Marx attached to his distinction between 'labour' and 'labour-power': an importance essential for the context of exploitation as a key to understanding the bourgeois (or capitalist) mode of production. The role of the labour theory of value in relation to the theory of surplus value is frequently misunderstood. Often this is interpreted as embodying a Lockean 'natural right' principle, to the effect that the product of a man's labour belongs 'of right' to the labourer; whence it is held to follow that the appropriation of part of this product by the capitalist is 'unnatural' and unethical. Hence exploitation is interpreted as a quasi-legal or ethical ethical concept rather than a realistic economic description. If what we have said about labour and the labour process has been appreciated, it should be clear that this is an incorrect interpretation. What could be said, of course, is that the notion of labour as productive activity implicitly afforded the definition of exploitation as an appropriation of the fruits of activity by others - appropriation of these fruits by those who provided no productive activity of their own. But far from being an arbitrary or unusual definition of 'productive' and 'unproductive', this would, surely, meet with general agreement as normal usage of these words. The problem for Marx was not to prove the existence of surplus value and exploitation by means of a theory of value: it was, indeed, to reconcile the existence of surplus value with the reign of market competition and of exchange of value equivalents. As he himself expressed it: 'To explain the general nature of profits, you must start from the theorem that, on an average, commodities are sold at their real values, and that profits are derived from selling them at their real values... If you cannot explain profit upon this supposition, you cannot explain it at all.'"
...The importance which Marx attached to the distinction between labour and labour-power lay precisely in its enabling him to show how there could be inequality and nonequivalence in 'equivalent exchange' - or exploitation and appropriation of what was created by the producers consistently with the theory of value (i.e., by demonstrating how 'profits are derived by selling them at their values')." -- Maurice Dobb, Introduction to Marx (1970a), A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy.
Lenin made a related point, that Marx did not think workers individually should get all of the value that they create:
"In the Critique of the Gotha Programme, Marx goes into some detail to disprove the Lassallean idea of the workers' receiving under Socialism the 'undiminished' or 'full product of their labour.' Marx shows that out of the whole of the social labour of society, it is necessary to deduct a reserve fund, a fund for the expansion of production, for the replacement of worn-out machinery, and so on; then, also, out of the means of consumption must be deducted a fund for the expenses of management, for schools, hospitals, homes for the aged, and so on..." -- V. I. Lenin, State and Revolution, Chapter V., Sect. 3
Louis Boudin noted that Marx's theory was descriptive in 1907:
"In his great work on capital and interest, where more than one hundred pages are devoted to the criticism of this theory, Böhm-Bawerk starts out his examination of the theory by characterizing it as the 'theory of exploitation' and the whole trend of his argument is directed towards one objective point: to prove that the supposedly main thesis of this theory, that the income of the capitalists is the result of exploitation, is untrue; that in reality the workingman is getting all that is due to him under the present system. And the whole of his argument is colored by his conception of the discussion as a controversy relative to the ethical merits or demerits of the capitalist system... We therefore advisedly stated in the last chapter that in employing the adjectives 'necessary' and 'surplus' in connection with labor or value, it is not intended to convey any meaning of praise or justification in the case of the one, nor of condemnation or derogation in the case of the other. As a matter of fact, Marx repeatedly stated that the capitalist was paying to the workingman all that was due him when he paid him the fair market value of his labor power. In describing the process of capitalist production, Marx used the words, 'necessary' and 'surplus' in characterizing the amounts of labor which are necessarily employed in reproducing what society already possesses and that employed in producing new commodities or values. He intended to merely state the facts as he saw them, and not to hold a brief for anybody." -- Louis Boudin (1907) The Theoretical System of Karl Marx In The Light of Recent Criticism.
These examples, taken almost at random, can be multiplied. One might note the mention of others (Lassalle, Ricardian socialists) who think labor is entitled to the full value that it creates. Also, I am not denying the existence of those who read Marx with mistakes.

Disclaimer: I do not speak Korean. This is purely translated by machine with a lot of cleanup afterward. With that in mind, I am open to criticism to improve these translations. Enjoy!

Chapter 428

I pushed myself upright, exhaling the breath I’d been holding.

"Ah, fuck. I thought I was going to die from frustration."

Pretending to be comatose for four days had tested the limits of my patience.

It was a feat made no easier by the slew of cutting-edge medical devices surrounding me.

'It was also an awkward time to return to Murim.'

After all, returning meant nothing more than idly watching the Yangtze's waters from a ship's deck.

It was better to wrap up affairs in the modern world. With the System at my disposal, I've got plenty of time.

Crack, crack.

Flexing my stiff neck elicited chuckles from Mr. Choi.

"It would be chaos if people saw this on CCTV."

"That's a scary thought. If there were cameras in here, I would have just killed myself to avoid the trouble."

Fortunately, there was no CCTV to witness, and my life remained intact.

Actually, thanks to the brainwave detection device strapped to my head, alerting medical staff the moment consciousness returned, CCTV was virtually redundant.

"Out of curiosity, how did you manage to fool that machine?"

I shrugged nonchalantly.

"Hm? The brainwave detector? It's not exactly a machine."

"Oh?"

"It's technically a machine, but its core power source turned out to be a magic stone."

"So, you manipulated it with mana... I mean, with Qi?"

"Yes, I caused it to malfunction a bit. It wasn't too hard to manage."

Now that I had unlocked my middle dantian, my control over Qi had greatly improved.

If I couldn’t outsmart the few medical devices, I would have gone to check the temperature of the Han River out of frustration. [Note: the Han River is well-known for being a suicide hot spot, so much so that a common Korean saying for committing suicide is "visiting the Han River" or "checking the Han River's temperature". Fun fact: the namu.wiki page for the Han River has a link that you can press to check the current temperature.]

"By the way, how do you think the situation with Wu Hei-Xing will turn out? From what Grandpa General Receptionist says, it seems he was prepared." [Note: see novel chapter 384 for an explanation for this reference. This is something that the MC used to call the General Secretary of China.]

"For the fiftieth time, it's not Grandpa General Receptionist, it's President Shao."

"Why not? It sounds friendly and nice."

"..."

Mr. Choi shook his head and retrieved an apple from the nearby fruit basket.

With a knife that looked like a luxury item, he deftly peeled it and offered it to me.

"You probably don't need to worry about the Wu Hei-Xing issue. The general public is on our side, and it seems President Shao has sharpened his knife for it."

"President Shao? To be honest, he seemed a bit soft."

Crunch. I bit into the crisp apple, its sweetness exploding in my mouth.

If President Shao had been as tough as this apple, the Princelings wouldn’t still be entrenched at the heart of power.

As though he had read my thoughts, Mr. Choi chimed in.

"Did you know that President Shao was once branded a reactionary and spent five years laboring in a pig slaughterhouse?"

"Really?"

"He aimed for political reform after the Great Cataclysm but became a target of the Princelings. And look where he is now."

His implication was crystal clear.

Bearing personal vendettas against the Princelings and having weathered severe trials, he had ascended to the pinnacle of power. His resolve was unyielding.

"A knife that has been long sharpened must be swung when the time comes. To the Princelings, President Shao is now a formidable swordsman."

"What about Wu Hei-Xing's father then..."

"Considering his political stance and the public sympathy for Wu Hei-Xing, execution would be too harsh. He'll probably end up in a political prison or at the slaughterhouse. But given his age, he’ll likely spend the rest of his life wherever he ends up."

From Wu Hei-Xing to his father.

Thus concludes the tale of father and son.

Somehow, this apple tasted sweeter than usual today.

I grinned, wiping the juice from my lips.

"Lying down for four days was worth it."

As Mr. Choi began peeling another apple and extended it towards me, he responded.

"Your judgment was correct, Mr. Jin Tae-Kyung. If the media had known you woke up within half a day, you couldn't have avoided their scrutiny."

According to Mr. Choi, Lee Jeong-Ryong, whose body was never found, was considered certainly dead, and Wu Hei-Xing, whose neck had broken, was found as a gruesome corpse after the battle.

Had I appeared unscathed so swiftly, I would have been fodder for a scandal-hungry press.

"Mr. Jin Tae-Kyung, when you first woke up, even I couldn’t find my composure... Did you anticipate this before dealing with those two?"

I paused, biting into the apple again.

"I hadn't thought that far."

"Really?"

“No, I was just exhausted and my head was pounding, so I didn't want to deal with any of the fallout. If it got out that I was awake, it would have created chaos, both internally and externally.”

"..."

"Why?"

Mr. Choi’s expression turned to one of betrayal, then he looked away quietly.

"...No reason."

"Relax your face. If the result is good, that's all that matters."

My words rang true as events began to tilt remarkably in our favor.

Beyond resolving the complexities with Wu Hei-Xing and the Princelings, we had lawfully neutralized Lee Jeong-Ryong, our most formidable obstacle, and thwarted the Arch Lich, averting a bigger disaster.

The wave of global accolades and commendations that ensued was merely icing on the cake.

The notifications heralding my escalating fame came so frequently they nearly drove me mad.

Like right now.

Ding.

- The world's attention is focused on you!

- Your fame has greatly increased!

- There is too much information to process. Future fame-related notifications will be delivered monthly.

"…You should have done this sooner, damn thing."

At my muttered exclamation, Mr. Choi looked puzzled.

"Huh?"

"Oh, it's nothing. How's my family doing?"

Earlier, under a special mandate from President Shao Yang, my mother and Ha-Yeon had been flown to China on a chartered plane, welcomed with treatment befitting dignitaries and escorted by a fleet of jets.

"You don't have to worry. Your mother is resting comfortably, and your younger sister is..."

"You don't need to tell me about her. I'm sure she's fine."

"…Ah, yes."

I couldn't keep the secret from my family any longer, so I had discreetly informed them through Mr. Choi that I was unharmed and already awake, though I dreaded the impending first family visit.

'A couple of back smacks won't be the end of it.'

Facing thousands of monsters would be easier.

I could hardly fathom the confrontation that awaited. After all, with every fuck-around, the find-out is always lurking right around the corner. I was the one who hopped on a plane to China and had only notified my mother through a text in our family group chat.

"Team Leader Choi."

"Yes."

"You absolutely must not leave during the family visitation. Understand?"

"…?"

"Promise me. You have to stay by my side."

"Ah, got it."

And two hours later.

"You son of a bitch! You little rascal!"

"Gasp, Mom!"

"Jin Tae-Kyung!"

With a cry that was part wail, part shriek - the likes of which I’d never heard before — my mother launched herself at us. Mr. Choi, attempting to intercept her, was the first casualty of her onslaught.

"Calm down, Ma'am..."

"Move! Out of my way!!"

Swoosh! Rip!

"Ouch! Hey!"

"Hey, Jin Tae-Kyung-!"

In a stroke of ill-fated coincidence, a bold, recently graduated high schooler’s kick landed with pinpoint accuracy between his legs.

Thump!

"…Uh."

"…Ah."

With eyes wide, Mr. Choi spoke in a ghostly whisper.

"My special underwear, impervious to heat and frost and enchanted with a semi-permanent cleaning spell..."

Goodbye, Mr. Choi.

You should have enchanted it with a strengthening spell instead.

Thud, flop.

As I silently honored the fallen warrior, brought to his knees by agony, I steeled myself for what was to come.

'Inventory open. Equip Fire Dragon Armor.'

I felt the armor snugly encase my chest, stomach, and back beneath the hospital gown. Closing my eyes, I braced myself.

Then, unexpectedly, a palm struck my cheek.

Swoosh!

Ah, wait. A slap was not part of my calculations…

* * *

I regained consciousness a week later.

That was the official story, anyway.

After a week filled with exhaustive examinations and numerous follow-ups, I faced a sea of cheering fans and media at a brief press conference.

「Mr. Jin, we've filtered out any problematic journalists, so please respond to questions from the pre-selected reporters.」

However, despite the precautions set by President Shao before the press conference, several reporters, hungry for a sensational story, swarmed like bees.

「Mr. Jin! There have been reports that you had a poor relationship with Wu Hei-Xing, who died in the recent battle. Is this true?」

I gestured towards the security team attempting to restrain an insistent foreign journalist and responded.

"I've already explained everything during the investigation, but I'll tell you again. It's all true."

Snap!

A flurry of camera flashes and a crescendo of chatter ensued. One Chinese journalist, smiling with evident malice, pressed for further details.

「What was the reason?」

"That kid had no manners from our first meeting."

「What exactly...?」

"He cursed at me, calling me a bangzi. So I called him a jjanggae bastard, and then he attacked me after the meeting." [Note: a quick reminder since it's been a while: bangzi is a Chinese ethnic slur for Koreans. It is originally "Gaoli bangzi" but has been shortened in this sentence. It originated from the word for "helper", as numerous servants would accompany Korean diplomatic missions to China during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. These servants gained a bad reputation for petty crimes during this time period. Jjanggae is a derogatory term for Chinese people from the word "Jang Gwe", which means a person who manages a store's safe box. During the Imo Military Rebellion, low-status Han Chinese were brought by Qing dynasty's Manchu soldiers to Korea for menial tasks and, left stranded after the soldiers were mobilized for war against France, turned to running small-scale prostitution and restaurants during and after the Japanese colonial period to make a living. With no protections for their identities in Korea, these individuals' reverence for money stored in chests morphed into a term broadly referring to Chinese people and Chinese food establishments.]

The smile swiftly faded from the Chinese journalist’s face.

「Jjanggae! That's derogatory towards Chinese people!」

"Ah, I see."

With a casual nod, I signaled to the security officers.

"Please escort that jjanggae bastard out."

「Let me go! This is suppression of the press!」

"Please suppress that bastard's mouth. I'll talk with Chinese people, but I don’t talk with jjanggae. He's just like that bastard Wu Hei-Xing."

At that moment, another journalist, also Chinese, raised a question from the crowd.

「So, did you have further conflicts with Wu Hei-Xing after that?」

"There wasn't really a conflict; after I gave him a beating in true Korean style, he quieted down. After that, we got along fairly well."

「Then...」

"Yes."

I continued, my tone grave.

"Wu Hei-Xing was killed by the Arch Lich. There was no time to intervene, and I survived thanks to the Top-grade potion he left behind. I offer my condolences for his death once again."

There, the necessary condolences offered.

Admit what must be acknowledged, mend what can be salvaged. Regardless of Wu Hei-Xing’s actions in life or the nature of his character, confessing to his murder would complicate my future endeavors.

'Few would believe if I said Lee Jeong-Ryong lured Wu Hei-Xing into a plot.'

Inconvenient truths are often ignored.

Knowing that my next line would be better received with an expression of deep sorrow, I conjured the image of a 100T USB containing the treasures of all humanity disappearing. With that, tears naturally flowed heavily down my face. [Note: It's porn. It's always porn.]

"And most importantly, the hero of the Great Cataclysm and a senior I respected more than anyone. I feel profound sadness at the death of Hunter Lee Jeong-Ryong. He was a truly good person."

「Ah...」

The mood at the press conference momentarily grew solemn. I wiped the tears from my cheeks, gearing up to deliver one final, rehearsed statement.

"Although brief, the moments we shared will forever remain with me. I extend my deepest condolences to all who perished in this conflict. I regret that I could not save even one more soul."

A statement that silenced any further criticism.

This press conference, surprisingly brief given the weight of the circumstances, spanned just over thirty minutes. It was transmitted live across the globe via radio and cable networks; and on YouTube alone, it captivated an audience of three billion in real time.

Before the echoes of my words could even begin to fade, I set out to find someone.
