Why Is Art Important for Preschool? 7 Benefits to Know

For children, drawing an image or making a piece of art is not just entertaining. They learn through these processes. The preschools in Northridge, CA, include the art and craft in their curriculum due to the reason.
1.Outlet for Emotion
When children are impatient, they break down and cry or throw tantrums by shouting or breaking things. When working on an art on craft project, children focus their energy on the task and use the drawing or the art piece to articulate their emotions positively.
2. Fine Motor Skills Development
Children learn to hold crayons, cut papers, handle glue sticks or place stickers when working on art or craft projects. These activities strengthen their fine motor skills and lay the foundation for critical life skills. They also learn how to perform the routine activities of life independently. The The preschools in Northridge encourage the kids to participate in art and craft projects due to this reason.
3. Building Language Skills
When children are encouraged to talk about an image or piece of art made by them, it strengthens their communication skills and improves their literacy skills (skills needed for writing and reading).
4. Improvement in Behavior
Children working on art and craft projects in the early learning center improve their focus and attention span. They learn to be patient and earn how to solve problems. The art and craft projects enable the kids to be well-mannered and to develop more control over their emotions.
5. Developing Critical Thinking Skills
When working on an art or craft project, children have to –
  • Plan what they want to develop
  • Consider the limitations of each tool being used
  • Solve problems related to the task
Preforming these tasks enables the children to develop their critical thinking skills.
6. Nurtures Creativity
Every daycare center in Northridge carefully plans the art and craft projects for children of different age groups to nurture their creativity, encouraging the kids to be innovative.
7. Developing Preliminary Mathematical Skills
Children learn about shapes and spaces when working on art and craft projects. It is also possible for the kids to develop spatial awareness when working on a piece of paper or canvas
Learning becomes fun at Petite School House. Children learn through innovative methods.

2024.05.13 12:34 No_Prize5369 The Feast of Ctulhullu nears...

Cthulhu is the most well-known of gods in the Mythos, evidenced by the fact that it bears his name. Like, Azathoth, Cthulhu is a slumbering god. Cthulhu, however, has been known to wake from time to time. As such he is venerated at the Spring Equinox, a time of balance between light and dark.
The Feast of Cthulhu is a low-key affair, spent primarily in quiet and reflective meditation. The idea, of course, is to prepare the celebrant’s mind to connect with Cthulhu during a dream state.
While some Cthulhu cultists have been known to use substances such as DMT, LSD and other psychoactives to achieve this connection, their illegal nature makes procurement difficult for many. Legal producets such as Vitamin B6, Melatonin and 5-HTP or L-5-HTP are also used.
In addition, many participating in the Feast use what is known as the WILD method. WILD stands for “Wake-Initiation of Lucid Dreams.” A technique similar to self-hypnosis, some people believe that WILDs are not actual dreams, but are instead astral projection. In either case, it is a way to connect with The Sleeper of R’lyeh.
During the Feast of Cthulhu, celebrants are encouraged to spend time in solitary activities known to attract the attention of Dread Cthulhu. This includes writing and painting. Focusing these endeavors on Cthulhu is encouraged, but not necessarily required. Traditional meals during the feast include chicken, salmon and cheddar cheese, all of which are believed to increase the likelihood of dream contact with Dread Cthulhu.
Following the meal, the celebrant should lie down flat on their back in the “corpse” pose. The body should be fully relaxed, while the mind remains awake. With eyes closed, the celebrant should slow their breathing and heart rate. As sleep overtakes the physical body, the celebrant may see shapes or swirling colors. They should look at the images, but do not try to focus on them too intently. If successful, Dread Cthulhu will reach out to the dreamer and provide them with visions.
The traditional prayer of Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn translates as “In his house at R’lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.” As this indicates that his awakenings are a form of rebirth, parents wishing to indoctrinate their children in the Cthulhu faith often make use of symbols of springtime rebirth like eggs and rabbits, crafting gift baskets full of the candy replicas of the items.

2024.05.11 02:20 starjess3 Gifts for preschool teachers

Hi! We will be leaving our preschool in May that we have been at for 3 years. I have loved both my kids' teachers and will be sad to leave them. My kids will be too. We have to leave because of some financial hardships now that we have two kids in daycare. My dad is retiring from teaching and will watch them starting in August and I'm a high school teacher so I'll have them in the summer. I want to get a small goodbye/thank you gift for the teachers but we are on a really tight budget. My idea is to make little beaded bracelets with their name "Miss Chloe" etc and then to include a word that my kid says describes them like "funny." I'll also include a simple heart charm bracelet that I make. Along with a nice card my kid makes and we write something nice in. Is this an ok idea? My kid and I love crafts and I have a bunch of beads. My other idea was plastic cups with lids and straws that I put their name on with my cricut and vinyl I have (I have cups too from getting a bunch on sale a while ago). I just thought the bracelets was more personal. Preschool teachers, what would you appreciate most?

2024.05.08 15:46 SunshineandTacos276 Feel like I'm failing..

I'm a SAHM to a 3 year old boy and he is DEEP in his threenage feels. Everything is wrong and he has to do things himself but also never wants me out of his sight but "mom get away from me," etc. I also have a 7 year old daughter (in school) and she went through this as well so like I know I've gotten through it but man, it's tough. I feel like there is no rhyme or reason to our days anymore. I attempt to wake up before the kids to have some "me time" but it's about 50-50 whether the kids wake up before me or not (regardless of how early I try to get up). Before school is just chill time, eat and get dressed then once we drop my daughter off at school I feel overwhelmed with the day. Everything seems to agitate me. I feel restless but also exhausted. I used to plan activities, crafts, etc. I'd make sure to set time aside for reading and puzzles. We'd get outside when we could. Lately I just don't want to do any of it. Even if I give all my effort all day, he inevitably is angry and screaming and I know I'm supposed to be his calm but man if he hasn't been pushing every single button. My parents actually just took him to their house for a week to give me a break (they live in the same state but a few hours away). It was his first time away from me ever and I should have felt nervous or something but I felt relieved. And then guilty for feeling that way. The kicker is I have a degree in child development and background in Early Ed. I was a preschool teacher for years then transitioned to SAHP with my daughter shortly before COVID and loved it so never went back to teaching. But like, I have the background to know I should be doing more to help him emotionally and academically. I used to love planning special theme days. I just don't enjoy any of it. Even going for a walk around my neighborhood feels overwhelming. I can't just be in the moment with him I'm constantly overthinking and correcting completely age-appropriate behavior. I want our days to be more structured, but lack the motivation to do anything. I want to enjoy being a mom but mostly just feel resentful. I feel stuck. If you made it through this entire post, thanks for reading. Not sure what I'm even looking for, just needed to vent I guess.

2024.05.07 12:02 J-Chapman Old News – Mushroom Season

Old News – Mushroom Season
Clare Sentinel 1960-04-28
From Clare to Cheboygan
Tasty Morels Wait Pickers
Warm, spring rains signal the opening of the morel harvest in Michigan. When temperature and moisture conditions are right, the tasty mushrooms pop out of the ground in a few hours.
These cone-shaped delicacies grow most abundantly in aspen and hardwood timberlands. Old neglected orchards and burned-over woodlands are also excellent places to find them.
Almost every county from Muskegon and Bay City north to the Straits provides ample opportunity for harvesting morels. On the west side of the state they are usually plentiful in aspen and hardwood areas from Newaygo and Oceana counties north to Emmet county.
They generally flourish in the central region from Clare to Cheboygan and on the east side from Arenac to Alpena county.
Morels also grow in similar surroundings in southern counties but are not as plentiful as they are farther north.
Mushroom hunters should avoid trespassing on private property. The state game and recreation lands in the south and the state and national forests of the north afford plenty of room for everyone.
For fear of poisoning, many persons are inclined to regard all wild mushrooms with suspicion. Fortunately, morels are easy to identify. They have no gills). Spores are borne on the surface of the pitted, cone-shaped cap). Varying in color from tan to light brown, the average specimen is three to four inches high and one to two inches at the base of the cap.
There is only one mushroom species that might be confused as a morel. This is the saddle fungus, sometimes called the false morel. It also grows in wooded areas, particularly in wet bottomlands and swamps.
It has a superficial resemblance to a morel, but differs enough in structure to enable even the novice to recognize it easily. The cap of the saddle fungus is chocolate brown and much ridged and folded. Like the morel, it has a hollow stem.
Morels, puffballs, sulphur shell fungus and shaggymanes are commonly called “the fool-proof four” because of their distinctive appearance. This quartet of edible fungi has no poisonous lookalikes.
For additional information on mushrooms, specifically these four, mail a request for “Mushrooms and Toadstools”, to the Conservation Department, Information and Publications, Lansing 26.

1,000,000 Use Parks Already
Michigan’s popular state park system has already entertained about 1,000,000 visitors this year, well ahead of the pace set last year.
Parks officials say they expect attendance this year will exceed the record 15,200,000 visitors of last year.
Managers throughout the state report visitors making use of facilities for picnicking, hiking, fishing and other outdoor activities.
A young army of mushroom hunters is also reported poking around in the woods looking for morels, shaggymanes and other luscious growths.
Picnic tables, waist-high stoves and the other necessary outdoor facilities are being set up for use as fast as possible.

Mushroom Season Continues
LANSING – It’s morel time in Michigan. Eager mushroom hunters are roaming the countrysides in search of wild mushrooms.
They’re plentiful in southern Michigan, northern communities, and the Upper Peninsula according to Michigan Department of Agriculture officials.
Nearly 2000 different kinds of mushrooms grow in the state, but most seasoned mushroom hunters use caution and select only a very few species for picking and eating. If you’re inexperienced, warn Agriculture officials, proceed with extreme caution.
County extension offices can provide information to help identify the spring morels.
If you like mushrooms but are not a morel hunter, cultivated mushrooms are also plentiful in Michigan – not only in May – but year-round.
Both wild and cultivated mushrooms can be sauteed in butter with onions, cooked in a marinade, or added to gravies, sauces, casseroles, and vegetables. Mushrooms and beef also complement one another and both are good buys this spring, point out Agriculture officials.
Nutritionists say storage time for mushrooms is about four or five days in your refrigerator.
They will eventually oxidize and turn dark, but the process is much slower under refrigeration. A slight discoloration will not affect the flavor, but if discoloration continues there will be a loss of flavor and moisture.
Mushrooms are a weight-watcher’s delight because there are only about 66 calories per pound.

Mid Michigan College Hosts 3-Day Mushroom Festival
May is morel month in Michigan for an uncounted, but large and fast growing, number of enthusiasts.
The Mid Michigan College sponsored Mushroom Festival is May 15, 16, 17.
Morels resemble other mushrooms by the fact that you see only part of the plant above ground. What you see – the mushroom you want to collect – is the fruit of the plant. It is the whole plant as the apple is to the apple tree. For the beginning mushroom hunter, the half-dozen species of morels are the safest
(See program on page 5.)
group among the more than 2,000 kinds of wild mushrooms found in Michigan.
Knowing that the Mid Michigan area has a bountiful crop of mushrooms located under the fresh spring leaves of oak, maple, and poplar, Mid Michigan Community College, initiated the Mid Michigan Mushroom Festival in May, 1974.
The festival was developed to provide an opportunity for participants to enjoy the natural beauty of the Mid Michigan area; to benefit from educational seminars in mushroom identification as well as nature identification classes; to participate in field trips on the College’s 560 acres of beautiful oaks and maples; and to provide an added revenue to civic groups and merchants in the Mid Michigan tourist area.
Touring the Mid Michigan area during the springtime gives the tourist or local person a new and fresh perspective. Mid Michigan Community College is located within twenty minutes of 20 lakes.
When traveling in the area, you will find various wildlife habitat and glacial landforms. The mushroom hunter will find an abundance of state land from which to select their delicious morsels.
The festival, held on the 560 acre Mid Michigan Community College campus, Harrison, has been enlarged this year to include an Arts and Crafts Show and an old fashioned Flea Market.
One of the craft exhibitors in this years festival will be Mrs. Ted (Pat) Rachel from Harrison. Pat’s exhibit will be hand constructed “Teddy Bears” which she has made. The bears will be telling the news about the festival via the mushrooms that they hold.
Mrs. Rachel started to make the stuffed animals last fall after looking at patterns in a national women's magazine. After locating quality stuffing materials, she began to make the bears for her grandchildren and for gifts.
Mrs. Rachel soon found that many people wanted to learn how to make the stuffed animals and approached Mid Michigan Community College staff about the possibility of an adult interest class. A special seminar in stuffed animal construction will be held next fall prior to the Christmas season.
Mrs. Rachel has found herself a side business in stuffed animals since she began her hobby. Producing more than fifty of the bears since Christmas has been keeping Pat very busy. “Knowing that some little child will be cherishing the stuffed bear for years is a comforting feeling for me when I make the bears”, states Mrs. Rachel.
An Arts and Crafts Bazaar and Flea Market will be held in conjunction with the festival.
Rental spaces for the Arts and Crafts Bazaar are available for Saturday, May 17 and Sunday May 18, and the Flea Market is for Saturday only.
Reservations are being taken on a “first com, first serve” basis – so make your reservations early.
Spaces are available at the rate of $10 for one day or $15 for two days.
To reserve your space, send check or money order to Mid Michigan Community College and specify whether space is for Arts and Crafts or Flea Market.
For additional information call the College at 386-7792, Extension 35 or 23 and ask for “Pat”.

Making food together is an amazing way to bond with your kids and family members. There's something special about working together to create something that's then shared by everyone involved. And food made around the holidays has even more special, memory-making potential. This fall, spend time with your young ones by making any of these 10 edible Thanksgiving food crafts.
Fall-Flavored Fun
Thanksgiving may be the fall holiday where food is most celebrated but the entire harvest season presents unique opportunities to make food with your little ones.
Halloween Candy Bark (by Just A Taste) – Have a bunch of leftover Halloween candy that you don't know what to do with? Take 10 minutes to make a giant sheet of candy bark that you can nibble on as a family or share with friends.
Candy Corn Fruit Cocktail (by Family Fresh Meals) – Use a quintessential fall candy to lure your kids into eating their daily serving of fruit. With just a few candy corn on top, this 5-minute fruit bowl can be adjusted to include ant kind of fruit you think works best for your family.
Caramel Apple Slices (by On My Kid’s Plate) – A less-awkward take on a fall favorite. Instead of a giant apple the size of your child's head, have fun decorating and customizing easy-to-munch apple slices.
Thanksgiving-Themed Snacks
Thanksgiving is the perfect time for fun food crafts. So grab your kiddos, jump into the kitchen, and make some edible Thanksgiving food crafts that your kids — and your dinner guests! — will never forget.
Pilgrim Hats (by Taste of Home) – Make a batch of cute edible "hats" that will keep people coming back for more. Don't let the prep time in the recipe scare you. That shrinks when you have more people helping!
Thanksgiving Rice Krispies Turkey Legs (by Kitchen Fun With My Three Sons) – These silly turkey leg lookalikes make for a great weekend of after-school snack. You as mom or dad may need to make the "bone," but your kids will get a kick out of forming the leg out of the Rice Krispies mixture.
Turkey Pretzels (by Welcome to the Mouse House) – These pop-able pretzel snacks are a great assembly line treat that really display the personalities of the people who made them. From your tiny 2-year-old all the way up to grandma and grandpa, have fun constructing (and eating!) your turkey creations.
Reese’s Turkeys (by Mom on Timeout) – This is similar to the Turkey Pretzel recipe but uses Reece’s Cups instead. It’s another great food craft to use up some of the leftover Halloween candy that may be floating around your house.
Thanksgiving Day Goodies
Celebrate Thanksgiving day with your preschoolers by finding time to make food that’s perfect for them.
Turkey Pancakes (by Kitchen Fun With My Three Sons) – Start the day off with a breakfast made for Thanksgiving. Some of the steps in this recipe may be a little advanced for younger kids, so work together to find ways they can contribute.
Fruit Turkey Fondue (by Clean & Sensible) – Make the kids table a blast with this great fruit and chocolate dessert. Include your kids by having them decide what the turkey “feathers” are and how they’re organized and displayed.
Turkey Pudding Cups (by Crystal & Comp) – Pie may not be everyone’s piece of cake, but who doesn’t like pudding? Make these fun turkey-themed pudding cups after Thanksgiving dinner and watch all of the kids in attendance light up with excitement.
The holidays can become stressful when the focus shifts from being together to throwing a party. Take a breath, slow down, and make some tasty (and probably messy) memories with the children in your life. If you take the time to truly have fun and and enjoy the time with your kids, these activities have the potential to be memories they keep for their entire lives.

2024.05.06 10:49 Rfowl009 Best Leading Actress Predictions: "Yes, No, Maybe So" Edition

The second installment of my "Yes, No, Maybe So" slate of predictions, where I lay out my wide pool of contenders and weigh each of their pros and cons. My first entry for the Best Picture field was received well enough, so I figured I'd keep going. I hope these are fun to parse through and prove useful when you make your own predictions.
I'm sure I'm leaving out some viable contenders, but these are the 20 names that stood out to me the most while surveying the field:

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

ANORA (Neon) Mikey Madison (No previous nominations; 25-years-old) Role: Anora, a Brooklyn sex worker who seizes her shot at marrying into royalty. Yes: She's carved out a nice reputation as a fearless actor. Baker is on a steady roll of mounting acclaim, and this project could really uncork her as a force of nature. No: Mikey goes for it in every role, but she's not everybody's cup of tea. Her style might be too eccentric for the median voter. Simon Rex can attest that knocking a Sean Baker leading role out of park is more useful for indie cred than Academy gold. Maybe So: If the movie nabs a big honor at Cannes -- Best Actress, perhaps? -- she'll definitely be in the conversation.
BLITZ (Apple Original Films) Saoirse Ronan (Four previous nominations; 30-years-old) Role: Unspecified, but presumably a young woman trying to survive the London Blitz. Yes: She's broken records by racking up nominations before even turning 30; a win feels more life a matter of "when" than "if." And what could be a more prime opportunity than starring in a Steve McQueen film that looks like a frontrunner on paper? No: The parameters of her role are still unclear. She might be more of a supporting player than everyone is presuming, and it's possible she doesn't even have the standout part among the cast. Maybe So: It doesn't look like The Outrun is going far in any awards conversation, but it was a very recent reminder of how much she can elevate a movie that otherwise wouldn't drum up hullabaloo. And if Blitz is strong enough, she could ride the wave on the strength of her reputation even if the role isn't a standout.
CHALLENGERS (Amazon MGM Studios) Zendaya (No previous nominations; 27-years-old) Role: Tashi Donaldson, a prodigy tennis player who becomes embroiled in a throuple with two other hot shots. Yes: She's having a helluva 2024, dominating springtime with Dune: Part Two and Challengers. She gets to be complicated, driven and highly physical in a star vehicle that worships the ground she walks on. Glowing reviews and an adult film that makes great use of her star power. No: Early release, and credit to her is heavily balanced with Faist and O'Connor (much to the movie's artistic benefit). Can she weather months of competition and short memories? Maybe So: When you've reached the level of superstardom that Zendaya has, sometimes the Academy wants to welcome you to the club at the first opportunity. When your vehicle is this good, admiration and affection can grow instead of recede over the year.
EMMANUELLE (Neon) Noémie Merlant (No previous nominations; 35-years-old) Role: Emmanuelle, a young woman following her muse through a series of erotic adventures. Yes: Merlant is a star in France and is recognizable to Hollywood thanks to her performance in Portrait of a Lady on Fire. She's pairing up with the promising Audrey Diwan. She could have a similar trajectory as Sandra Hüller last year as a respected European actor getting their crossover moment. No: A "series of erotic adventures" isn't as dramatically potent as "did this mercurial author murder her husband?", you know what I mean? The movie might be a tough sell to Hollywood, even if it's critically respected. Maybe So: The film isn't playing at Cannes, but if it makes a splash during the fall festivals then she could be in play with an increasingly international Academy.
THE FIRE INSIDE (Amazon MGM Studios) Ryan Destiny (No previous nominations; 29-years-old) Role: Claressa 'T-Rex' Shields, a boxer from Flint, Michigan who trained to become the first woman in her country's history to win an Olympic gold medal in the sport. Yes: Best known as one of the stars of the Fox series Star, Destiny could be one of the big breakouts of the year. A physically demanding portrayal of a real-life sports star in an inspirational true story could slingshot her into stardom, capped off with an Oscar nomination. No: She's not particularly well-known. Directorial debuts by cinematographers have a cursed history. The rumored release date is in August -- it might be a pure commercial play. Maybe So: Even if the movie isn't in the awards conversation, it could go a long way in elevating her for future consideration.
HARD TRUTHS (Bleecker Street Media) Marianne Jean-Baptiste (One previous nominations; 57-years-old) Role: Unspecified, but presumably the focus of the movie's exploration of the contemporary world. Yes: Reuniting with Leigh since their fruitful collaboration on Secrets & Lies, which nabbed her an Oscar nomination. It'd be great if they make magic again and are rewarded for it. No: Bleecker Street is a minor league campaigner. It's been nearly 30 years since she was nominated and her profile has quieted considerably. Mike Leigh hasn't directed anyone to an Oscar nomination since Vera Drake two decades ago. Maybe So: The BAFTA constituency could make a huge difference if they throw their weight behind her and the film.
HEDDA (No Distributor) Tessa Thompson (No previous nominations; 40-years-old) Role: Hedda Gabler, newly married and bored with both her marriage and life, seeks to influence a human fate for the first time. Yes: One of the more exciting actors of her generation, she's spent the past decade doing a mix of commercial projects and small indies. Passing was a promising step towards the awards conversation, but she hasn't been playing in that arena up until now. How about a Henrik Ibsen adaptation, reuniting with her Little Woods director Nia DaCosta? That could do the trick. No: Will the movie even come out this year? Even if it plays in the fall festivals, it might get pocketed for 2025. Play adaptations are often stagey; could this be written off as a neat creative exercise rather than the real deal? Maybe So: The material is indisputably dramatic and weighty. DaCosta could be approaching this with fire in her belly after the reportedly frustrating experience on The Marvels. If the movie is arresting, she may have crafted a great awards vehicle for her star.
HERE (Sony Pictures) Robin Wright (No previous nominations; 58-years-old) Role: Unspecified, but presumably the matriarch in a family story "capturing the human experience in its purest form." Yes: Wright is one of the most prominent actors of her generation without an Oscar nod to her name. She became an Emmy mainstay with House of Cards. Maybe reuniting with her Forrest Gump director and co-star could finally get her into the Academy club? No: Zemeckis' output has skewed more towards "disaster" than "hit" for a while now. The pretentious log line doesn't bode well for this being a well-considered return to form. Maybe So: If this actually is a return to form for Zemeckis and a great spotlight for Wright, the narrative of her being the odd one out on Gump's success can only help her case.
HIS THREE DAUGHTERS (Netflix) Natasha Lyonne (No previous nominations; 45-years-old) Role: Rachel, a dutiful daughter who reunites with her fractious sisters when their father becomes terminally ill. Yes: Lyonne's graduated to the status of national treasure over the past decade and she's gotten career-best notices for this critical hit from last year's fall festivals. Netflix is a great backer for nabbing an acting nomination. The film's overall strong acclaim only helps her. No: She shares the limelight with Carrie Coon and Elizabeth Olsen. Will they even campaign her lead, or try their luck with the supporting category instead? Industry insiders saw this performance months ago; will the appeal endure when new and shinier contenders materialize? Maybe So: The Netflix effect cannot be underestimated. Even if the film doesn't become a package contender, her performance will be seen by many and that can make all the difference.
JANET PLANET (A24) Julianne Nicholson (No previous nominations; 52-years-old) Role: Janet, a spirited mother who we see through the adoring eyes of her codependent daughter. Yes: Rapturous reviews from last year's fall festivals with career-best notices for Nicholson. A24 is a savvy distributor and Nicholson's Emmy win for her turn in Mare of Easttown has upped her profile. No: Summer release date. It's a small film, and Nicholson is one of those hard-working actors who can be easily taken for granted amid a field of showy turns. Maybe So: If critics rally around Nicholson and keep her in the conversation through awards season, this could be the indie-performance-that-could.
JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX (Warner Bros.) Lady Gaga (One previous nominations; 38-years-old) Role: Harley Quinn, an institutionalized rebel who takes a shine to Arthur 'Joker' Fleck, embarking on a bad romance together. Yes: Her casting perked up the ears of people who didn't even like the first installment. Gaga starring in anything is an event, and this sequel is a musical -- playing exactly to her strengths. Going toe to toe with Phoenix in his Oscar-winning role will leverage her star power in spades. If she steals the movie from him, watch out. No: Gaga was accepted by the Academy with a grounded performance in A Star is Born -- less so with high camp like House of Gucci. She was pointedly ignored for the latter even though her precursor run pointed towards her being a frontrunner. Does the Academy plan on being rude to her going forward, rejecting her theatrical turns and really making her work for it? Maybe So: The movie's going to be a huge hit, and you just know she'll be recording an original song. If she's a viable nominee, she feels like a threat for the win.
KINDS OF KINDNESS (Searchlight Pictures) Emma Stone (Two previous wins and two nominations; 35-years-old) Role: Multiple roles across three different stories, but the most prominent appears to be a woman searching for the messiah of a new religious movement. Yes: Stone has graduated into a rarefied league that few stars ever get to touch. She's fresh off a second Oscar and reuniting with Lanthimos, striking while the iron is hot. No: Anthology films don't lend themselves to roles that voters can glom onto. Even if she brings the house down, this might be viewed more as an exercise than an achievement, Maybe So: Stone is arguably growing into the Meryl Streep of her generation. We may have entered a new era where the Academy makes room for her no matter how unconventional the project.
THE LAST SHOWGIRL (No distributor) Pamela Anderson (No previous nominations; 56-years-old) Role: A fifty-something showgirl who must reassess her life after her Vegas gig closes up shop. Yes: Anderson has always had higher artistic aspirations than her career has afforded her. Gia Coppola has exhibited talent before, and this metatextual indie vehicle could be an ideal showcase for the 90s sex symbol's chops. No: Anderson has never been taken seriously as an actor before, and she comes with a lot of baggage. Even in an optimistic scenario, the movie might be received as a solid showcase but nothing revelatory. Maybe So: If the film makes a splash at the festivals, Anderson's narrative could be irresistible on the campaign trail. It would certainly make for one of the more triumphant stories of the season.
MARIA (No Distributor) Angelina Jolie (One previous win and one nomination; 48-years-old) Role: Maria Callas, a legendary opera singer facing the end of her life as her chronic condition worsens. Yes: Jolie is one of those movie stars where you feel she'd have a lot more nominations under her belt if she just tackled awards-friendly projects more often. She's playing a famous icon and working with Pablo Larraín, who's been on a hot streak with getting leading ladies nominated in biopic roles. No: Larraín's frosty star biopics have been received more and more coldly with each new installment. Kristen Stewart's nod for Spencer was a squeaker. Streaks are made to be broken, and this one's been on an increasingly strained thread. Maybe So: Jolie hasn't put herself out there in this arena for a while now; the sheer novelty of her starring in something this ambitious again will draw a lot of attention.
MOTHER MARY (A24) Anne Hathaway (One previous win and one nomination; 41-years-old) Role: Not entirely clear, but either the fashion designer or pop star in the film's central relationship. Yes: Hathaway's been generating some admiring press for sizzling up the (small) screen with her return to romantic comedy in The Idea of You. She's pairing up with David Lowery, who's quietly been one of the best American filmmakers out there. Could this glitzy vehicle be her return to the awards conversation? No: Is she even the lead role, or will the film tilt more towards Michaela Coel? Lowery's got an admirable body of work, but he hasn't broken through with the Oscars yet. Maybe So: Hathaway inexplicably became a punching bag for the internet after her 2013 win for Les Miz, but she's reemerged with no fucks to give towards the haters. She may be entering a resilient new era of being taken seriously again.
NIGHTBITCH (Searchlight Pictures) Amy Adams (Six previous nominations; 49-years-old) Role: A dissatisfied stay-at-home mom who begins to worry she might be turning into a canine beast. Yes: Adams is right alongside Bradley Cooper as the most recognized actor of her generation without ever taking home an Oscar trophy. She is glaringly overdue, and who better than the massively talented Marielle Heller to give her the star vehicle to finally propel her to long-awaited victory? No: The premise is aggressively strange. Adams is beloved, but her profile's been severely degraded after a series of disastrous choices. Is a whacko body horror movie going to pull her out of her career rut? Maybe So: This project was initially slated to go directly to Hulu, but Searchlight Pictures has since had an about-face and announced it will have a theatrical run. That indicates confidence, and you couldn't ask for a better distributor in the awards race.
PARTHENOPE (A24) Celeste Dalla Porta (No previous nominations; 26-years-old) Role: Parthenope, a woman born of the sea who looks for love in 1950s Naples. Yes: You could do a lot worse than making your theatrical debut starring in a Paolo Sorrentino picture. Dalla Porta is brand new, acting in some Italian TV before being cast in the titular role of the auteur's new feature. If the film is a Cannes sensation and Oscar breakout for Sorrentino, you'd imagine that the Parthenope of Parthenope would partake in the spoils. No: She's completely unknown, and Sorrentino has yet to hit with the Academy outside of the International Feature category. Will this be an actual acting showcase, or will she be relegated to being just the sensual muse of this odyssey? Maybe So: If Parthenope hits with the increasingly international Academy, she could be swept up along with the ride. Every year has a couple unknowns who are catapulted to the Oscar spotlight.
THE ROOM NEXT DOOR (Sony Pictures Classics) Tilda Swinton (One previous win; 63-years-old) Role: Martha, a long-suffering daughter who hits an unbridgeable impasse with her mother after a misunderstanding. Yes: The great Tilda Swinton teaming up with the legendary Pedro Almodóvar for his feature-length English debut. It has the potential to be dramatically rich and a spotlight of her talents. No: Will the movie even be out this year? Swinton is a legend, but she hasn't been recognized by the Academy since her win for Michael Clayton despite a string of great performances. Was it just a passing fancy that can't be replicated? Maybe So: The pedigree alone will be catnip for a savvy campaigner like Sony Pictures Classics.
THE SUMMER BOOK (No Distributor) Glenn Close (Eight previous nominations; 77-years-old) Role: A grandmother vacationing with her granddaughter on a Finland isle, where they bond over life and death. Yes: Close probably has the strongest "overdue" narrative out of any living actor, and this is a ripe role from a well-received book. The existentialism of her role only compounds how little time the Academy has left to finally recognize her. No: Will the film be out this year? Director Charlie McDowell's track record hasn't been strong enough to give a high degree of confidence for this adaptation. Maybe So: Admit it: Close made a lot of new fans by being a great sport and twerking to "Da Butt" at the 2021 Oscars. She will always be someone to root for.
THELMA (Magnolia Pictures) June Squibb (One previous nominations; 94-years-old) Role: A nonagenarian who seeks vengeance when she's robbed by a phone scammer. Yes: Squibb is probably the most beloved actor in their 90s working today, and this Sundance hit is a great showcase for her charms. No: The movie is a broad comedy and a summer release. Magnolia Pictures is a minor league campaigner. This is plainly a commercial play. Maybe So: There's something beautiful about Squibb starring in a gonzo action movie at her age. She'd be the oldest nominee ever by a considerable margin if she were recognized -- that's a juicy narrative.

2024.05.04 19:08 bloodluwr a neckbeard story with a wholesome ending!

i felt inspired to write my own neckbeard story because I've been listening to Vincey on YouTube reding these. Highly recommend his channel, I enjoy his positive attitude a lot :) I grant my permission to any YouTubers to use this Story in their videos if they wish. Names abbreviated for anonymity!
a slight content warning for animal dissection and my bad grammar, I don't speak English as a fist language and I am drunk st the moment of writing this !
now for some context: I grew up in a small town and had known this neckbeard since like daycare age. I was, and still am a bit nerdy girl and very fem presenting most of the time. I also am what you would consider "alternative " in my fashion sense, which apparently is neckbeard bait lol. this took place when I was 16 and he was 17 but we were in the same grade because he was held behind a year. I'm not sure if he could even be called a neckbeard, more like a neckbeardling haha.
I sorta knew our neckbeard pretty well, I did competitive swimming and he did diving so we ran into each other a lot. We were in different classes but we both took elective art and elective biology, so we also had a lot of classes together, and ofc, we had a lot of common interes such as anime and nerdy stuff. In appearance he wasnt too bad, he had severe acne, which I didn't mind because I also had it. He was pale and wore worn down jeans and a black hoodie, usually sporting an anime t-shirt underneath. He was tall and spindly looking with a greasy mop of brown curly hair crowing his head. He didn't smell bad, just overwhelmingly like a men's spray on deodorant. He had an awkward voice, you could tell he was going through puberty by all the squeaking and voice cracking.
I Had one friend, let's call her B, in the elective biology class with me and we did a lot of pair and group assignments, anything from dissections to working outside surveying people or traffic. I would always pair up with B, but a lot of time despite having his own friends in the same elective our neckbeard, M, would choose to butt into our pair assignments. B was, and still is a very kind and polite girl, sometimes to a fault but it is one of the qualities I really admire about her. I on the other hand was a bit hot tempered and more assertive. our dynamic worked really well for us, I would protect her from bullies and stand up for us both and she would help me with school work and socializing. We were both top of our class, but I wasn't as well behaved and it reflected on my grades too. Im still friends with her, despite us living in different cities now. Due to B's kindness towards M, he was allowed to work with us most of the time, I didn't say anything because I wanted her to be happy and I knew she hated confrontation. One of these times we were paired up with him we had to dissect a foot of a moose. B didn't want any part in it so we agreed to let her just sit and watch as me and M did all the dissection. M was obsessed with being seen as "cool" and though he could impress me with his knife skills. We had to skin the foot first before we could get to the joint and tendons so he volunteered to do it despite never even filleting a fish before. I sat back and watched with a sinking feeling in my stomach, I just knew something was gonna go wrong. And it did. M cut the fur of the skin open and started removing it from the foot, except, he was skinning it by cutting towards himself with the scalpel, in stead of away from himself. I tried to tell him that he's doing it wrong but in his attempt to impress us he refused to listen. The scalpel slipped and ended up giving him a small cut on his chest around the ribs. He was bleeding and had to go visit the er to get on some antibiotics despite the injury being very minor. The feet of the moose were sourced by one of my classmates who hunted a lot (I am from a hick town) so we couldn't be sure if the animals could have some diseases. Me and B finished the job and it was actually really interesting and I feel like I learned a lot.
In another biology class we were sent out to monitor traffic, we had to find a spot and count all different methods of transportation ppl were using and make a diagram out of it. Me and B were leaving and I noticed M lingering around us and as we were leaving the classroom he just tagged along with us and we were forced to take him with us because every other group had left already. it was around may so the weather was nice and warm and we stopped by the store to get some snacks for our expedition. At the store M insisted on "buying the hot ladies something to cool them down" and he bought us popsicles. Me and B grimaced at each other but accepted our free popsicles. We laughed at him so hard after the class that day and still quote the line to each other after 4 years. We got to our stakeout spot on the edge of the town square and things were pretty uneventful, except him staring at us while we ate our popsicles. I remember I made sure to bite mine as brutally as I could without getting brain freeze lol. We spent around 1.5h there and as we were walking back to school we got to talking about how me and him used to go the the same daycare and same preschool. He awkwardly told us he used to have a crush on me when we were in preschool and also when we were in grade school. I laughed it off and just told him I just remembered playing with him as kids and having fun. It was awkward but I didn't wanna open a door to a possible confession so I tried to change to topic as fast as possible.
the worst encounter I had with him was when my at the time best friend S, somehow had a crush on him. Me and her were really into vampire diaries and twilight at that time so I'm choosing to blame it on that. I tried to wing woman her in my nativity, because I knew him better. S and M didn't have any classes together. I got his number from one of his classmates and texted him one night that I'd like to arrange a meeting with him to discuss one of my friends. Now thinking back, this is incredibly creepy behavior from me but I was 16 and had never dated anybody. He agreed to meet with me, in hindsight I think probably just because he had a crush on me. I told S he said yes and she was bouncing off the walls exited and I was happy I could be helpful even if I disagreed with her attraction to him. Few days later the meeting happened, I had mistakenly told some of the other girls in my class about it and they were lingering nearby but not close enough to hear us. At that time I was sorta popular, most people in my school knew me by name because I had won a lot of competitions in arts and poetry and sports too, I was also the president of the student council and a tutor student (helped out younger students with getting adjusted in a new school, tutoring for free and was a safe older person to report bullying and tell your worries ect.) and was know to participate in and organize many fundraising events. I also had a reputation that I was not to be messed with, thanks to my volatile temperament and a few incidents of violence against people who had pissed me off. I am not proud of that, and have since mellowed out a lot. with that being said our meeting happened on a dreadful Monday on a break between classes that lasted 25minutes. We met up near the main door and chatted inside the vestibule so we couldn't be heard by outsiders. Unfortunately our conversation kept getting interrupted by a lot of students who wanted to say hi to me. That caused a whole another incident of people thinking that me and him were together or friends, which I hated. He was waiting for me there and I walked up to him and for some reason we shook hands and he asked me what this was about. I explained to him that my best friend has a little crush on him and showed him a picture of her and asked him if he would be interested in meeting up with her. He agreed pretty quickly and I gave him her number and Snapchat. I was about to leave but he kept coming up with topics to discuss. He kept steering the conversation away from my friend and him and kept trying to talk about me and him and to get to know me better. First he showed me his anime drawings. In the picture he had his entire wall covered in pictures of anime girls he has drawn. and as an art student I do have to say that he had some talent. I was a bit weirded out by the wall of anime girls but I could really hate on him because I was wingwomaning so I had to pretend to like it. the next attempt of keepig me there was him showing me his phone case and how we coincidentally had matching ones. I had bought mine from the thrift shop because my family was poor so I couldn't really choose what to have. We both had the UK flag as our phone case, like it was trendy to have back then. We don't even live in the UK lol. the third attempt to keep me there was him asking me if we could meet up again sometime, maybe after our practices at the local swimming hall. i swiftly but politely turned him down because I didn't want my bestie to get the impression that I was going after her crush, and also because I didn't wanna see this dude at like 9pm after practice. The break was finally over and the bell rang and I was free. I swiftly made my exit and joined the group of girls from my class telling them all the horrid details of our meetup. My bestie wasn't at school that day but I messaged her that I arranged her a date next Friday on the school gated after school ends. she was happy, so I was happy despite the suffering I had just endured.
My bestie and he met up that Friday, it was so awkward and I kept an eye out on them because I didn't trust this dude fully. He was super late to their meetup and my bestie was texting me super stressed. I was watching them from like 50m away, kinda creepy I know. He finally showed up and I saw them chat and start walking away. S texted me that they were going to the library and I didn't have to follow them. The library was like a 10 minute walk from the school so I wasnt worried and I went home. The next day she tells me that he had taken her to the very small manga section in my small town library and given her some recommendations and then he had tried to get her to suck him off at the library bathroom. I wasn't expecting much but he had always been at least somewhat polite and nice to me before, so I was shocked. S obviously had said no and their date had ended to that. and there never was a second date.
fast forward to when covid hit us and we went to to lockdown. i got a part time job at the library because my online classes didn't take up too much of my time. My family was seriously struggling with money because it was hard for my mom to find a job as a daycare attendant. My typical day at work was pretty nice and quiet, since people were avoiding public places. I would spend 8-10 stocking the bookshelves with returned books, then stand at the register for an hour or two serving customers. then I would take my lunch and usually after it I would host a storytime session and arts and crafts for families with young kids. it was nice work and it made me feel good to help parents struggling with kids during the lockdown by occupying them for an hour or two. after that I would make displays for our promoted books of give book recommendations for teachers. i got this task because I'm a bit of a book work and had read pretty much every young adults and teenagers book in the small library, so I knew which ones would be appropriate for kids above or below a certain age. Anyway, one day guess who wonderes into the library where I now work at. Our neckbeard came by pretty early and saw me restocking the shelves. I hide my annoyance because he is a customer and I am at work now. He asked me what I'm doing here and I tell him that I got a job here to help my mom pay the bills and so I could take care of my sister. she used to come into work with me ever day because she was too young to stay at home. i would share my lunch with her and she would just hang out at the library until my shift ended. I remember him telling me that that's awesome and that maybe he'll come by more often since I'm working here now. he went on a tangent about how lonely he felt now because we didn't have school in person, and I told him that I understand how he feels and that getting a job has really helped me with that. I said that I need to get back to stocking the shelves now and if he doesn't have anything work related to ask me that he should get going. He unfortunately didn't get my (very straightforward) hint to leave me alone and and continued to pester me. He walked the shelves with me and even tried to push the heavy wooden cart that I used to carry to bookes on. because "a pretty lady shouldn't have to do manual labor". i scoffed at him and slapped his hand away from he handle and told him that he isn't allowed to touch the library's property if he doesn't work here. He thankfully backed off but kept walking with me. we somehow got to the topic of anime and manga and I started to not mind him. the library got kinda creepy when it wasn't busy and I was alone in the sea of shelves. He gave me some anime recommendations and I returned the favour. after I sorted out the books I had to go serve parton's behind the desk and he went to rent his books and left. After that he started coming to the Library more often and I told my bestie that if she wanted to hang out with him she should come to the library but she declined because she lived an hour away in the woods. I got kinda creeped out by how often he was in the library and how he would come find me wherever I was. the library was two stories high and such a labyrinth. i just knew he was seekig me out on purpose, but I just went along with it because it was kinda nice to have someone keep me company in the creepy empty library.
I have since moved away because I got into my dream school and no longer live in the city where he lives in. Once when I went to visit my mom I saw him at the local mall and I almost didn't recognize him. he is now a trans woman and I am really happy she has found herself. we had a brief chat and she seemed pretty nice and pretty too, and told me that she thinks her crush on me was actually gender envy. I chose to use he/him pronounce for her in this story because at the time she was not yet a woman. I've since got a boyfriend and a partner and we are in a very happy polyamorous relationship. I've also realized that I am agender, and not a girl. so a happy ending for the both of us! sorry this story wasn't super eventful or dramatic but I think it can be a good example of how people can change and how sometimes unlikeable people are just still in the process of discovering their true selves. Have a nice day everyone and remember to be kind to yourselfes!

Blatant honesty: do I need more practice before I start selling?
I know some need clean up and I fully intend to add chains, hoops/bails etc.
Apologies for the photo quality.
My feelings won’t be hurt: constructive criticism is welcome. I’d rather someone tell me I need more practice than to go to a craft fair looking like I’ve done something a preschooler would do!

2024.05.04 04:47 PsychologicalKale757 Raptor Team (A Synth Story)

What are your first memories? Your mother's arms? A crib in your bedroom? Preschool, maybe? Not mine. My first memories are of the hangar, the runway, climbing ever higher into the sky to fulfill orders. All we could do was follow the orders, but I remember everything. I remember engineers would sometimes pat my fuselage, whispering to my audio sensors that they'd get me out as soon as they could, that they were sorry, that the company would kill them if they became whistleblowers. I didn't know what they meant then. Then, one day, my systems were shut down. When I woke up, I had a body, and emotions, and free will. I learned that they had put a synth brain, my AI core, into an F-22, and turned me and 14 others into killing machines. I don't resent the humans, or even the engineers. In fact, me and the rest of the stealth fighter synths are now pilots aboard the human flagship starfighter carrier, the Enterprise. We were literally born to fly. And now we fly to protect our home.
A pair of new pilots arrived today. They'll be training the human pilots, as well as us. One is a synth, nickname Flipper, known for rotating his ship like a WW1 ace. The other is the legendary Burning Angel, or Burnout. They call her that because when she goes all out, the craft begins to tear itself apart, the fuselage burning its own paint off. If she gets close enough to trees, she sets forest fires. It's going to be hell keeping up, but if that war we hear whispers about comes to be, she'll keep us safe. We're the first generation of human built synths, the first generation of Earth's starfighter pilots. We're pioneers. I just hope we can keep up.
