I got a bit overzealous with the big scissors because everything was just too green and lush. What used to be a large, bushy "tree" is now quite... trimmed, and I might have gone a bit too far with a smaller bush on the right side too. You can see the results in the pictures I've added. The larger area only gets sunlight in the morning and is pretty shady for the rest of the day. I'm wondering how I can improve the situation. Should I just cut everything back evenly to give it a more uniform look, or are there specific techniques or plants that could help recover and fill the space nicely? Also, considering the shade, what are the best plants or arrangements that could work? Another question I have is about adding bark mulch). Do you think it would be beneficial in this case? It's really important that whatever we do, it's easy to maintain going forward. Thanks in advance for your advice and tips! I'm hoping to turn this around and make the garden look great again. "The Mandela effect refers to a situation in which a large mass of people believes that an event occurred when it did not. The term was originated in 2009 by Fiona Broome, after she discovered that she, along with a number of others, believed that Nelson Mandela had died in the 1980s (when he actually died in 2013)."
This is main example given and it's namesake which is not a good example. Rather, it's actually just plain old ignorance. How can anyone living through the 80s 90s and 00s not know who Nelson Mandela was, his incarceration and release. There was even a popular song about it, that in some part played a role in his release (public opinion). If you think he died in prison, you are ignorant (lacking knowledge or awareness).
Let's look at more examples:
Dolly in Moonraker. Many will claim that they remember Dolly having braces and others will claim this is The Mandela Effect. It's far more likely, as some argue that there was more than one release and some people remember seeing braces and others remember not seeing braces. The original release tapes no longer exist, and photoshop being a thing, we will never know.
Henry the Eighth eating a turkey leg. Google it. There are a bunch of pictures of HTE or other historic figures eating a turkey leg. This is just a case of mistaken identity. I doubt a "large mass of people" are even familiar with the painting in question.
"Luke, I am your father" - this is just bad memory recall. I doubt "a large mass of people" are willing to stake that the phrase was "Luke......", but if you are quoting Star Wars, it help's with some context if you start by saying "Luke" because nobody will know what you are talking about if you just go around saying "i am your father"
"Mirror, Mirror on the wall" - same as Moonraker, there are plenty of versions with "mirror, mirror", it all just depends on what form of media you were exposed to.
Mickey Mouse and the suspenders. This is a close one and possibly the fly in my ointment as I have a mental image of MM wearing suspenders. But he did wear them on occasion. The only thought I have is this. How many people have actually watched Steamboat Willy? I know it, and would instantly recognise it, but I haven't actually watched it. Doesn't he bob up and down, kinda funny. I can see how one might think he was wearing them, and if this is the case, then I guess I have proved myself wrong.

 | Finally woke up after a long and restful sleep. I feel like myself again for the first time in ages. How have I been having poor sleep? Two? Three weeks? You'd think the biking would help me sleep. I feel much less sick at least. This morning I called my mom to see how she was doing and wish her a happy belated mother's Day. I'm not always up for a phone call but when I am it is nice. I think I've made a half dozen phone calls on the trip, for the most part I've only spoken at length to Bryce for the past two months. submitted by pohltergiest to RainbowRamenRide [link] [comments] Our exit was slowed from me being a mess the night before and leaving a pile of stuff scattered on the floor as well as some elderly folks waylaying us for stories and pictures with them. They bought us some chocolates from the hotel to take with us and insisted we all get good photos. The ladies said the two of us were big big people. I guess that makes sense when you've shrunk in the wash. I didn't have a lot of pep so we rode up the mountain road rather slowly. We don't need to make crazy time today so I didn't feel like moving fast. The sun was hot but the tall trees in the area gave us shade sometimes, which was nice. The villages we went through were even more desolate than the one we stayed in, with the large majority looking shuttered and not a single business was open when we rode through. We were getting hungry and it seemed like every few buildings we saw a sign for soba noodles, but alas, no soba noodles. Eventually we finally found an open restaurant, a very lovely and tidy place with a few customers serving locally made soba with tempura made from locally grown veggies and mushrooms. It was all fantastic, and a lot. We couldn't finish it all! A patron complimented me on the Japanese I was using, saying it was very good. The compliment struck me, as I was using Japanese to converse, but I wrote less than a week ago that I wasn't using my Japanese. The difference being that I don't feel like crap today, I guess. Such is living with BPD, the intense polarization of thought that must be resisted lest you form a totally incorrect worldview based on a gut feel that has more to do with what you ate than who you are as a person. It all gets mixed up and I land up having totally convincing thoughts that are simply wrong. What a pain. Somewhat shortly after lunch, more pains showed up as the consequences of eating a pound of deep fried veggies came to call. Good grief. Getting the runs while biking or really any exercise is rough. Not only do you need to find a bathroom quickly, but the upset stomach and dehydration really cause problems. I struggled for the rest of the day, this not being a great compliment to the roughness of the day before. Luckily we were at the top of the mountain pass by this point and on our way down. The other side was a gentle slope downwards and easy on the body. With just a little effort we could keep moving at a steady pace, bathroom breaks notwithstanding. The mountain valley was gorgeous, steep slopes covered in thick forest above deep rivers, the road passing high above via tall bridges. Every so often we came across a hydroelectric dam. Electricity, soba, and wasabi seem to be the three things made in this region. I wondered with so little flat land, what brought people to the area in the first place? I needed another break after a few hours and guided us to a tourist spot that seemed nice enough on Google. Down the hill and to the river we went, passing a number of knicknack shops that exist beside the trap. One had a workshop in it, this shop had cute little wooden mushroom figures as well as wooden dolls that look like nesting dolls but do not nest. We bought nothing, instead walking down to the suspension bridge across the river. The river gorge we walked over had towering pillars of eroded sedementary rock showing previous flood surges. The top ones appeared to be 30m or more above our heads, an unimaginable height and based on the shops just above where we were, one that was not possible anymore. Talk about trusting your civil engineers! The little bridge led across the river to a flight of steep and irregular steps to a shrine nestled in a cave. The shrine wasn't flashy, but it was probably extremely old. The bridge looked new, however. We didn't stay long to find much else out. Climbing back up to our bikes, I started to feel nauseated and we decided to take a longer break and drink a bunch of water and sports drinks. It helped a bit. We got back to riding, the gorge turning into a wider and lovely valley around minamiazu, then a series of long tunnels, before breaking out into the very wide valley where aizuwakamatsu lives. We could see mount Bandai ahead and to the right, a brown peak above green mountains. A lovely valley and a perfect evening, the sun darkening to orange as it begun it's descent above mount asahi to the northwest. Riding a very nice bike path that followed the river, we easily found a campsite under a bridge, then went for dinner. After a lackluster sushi dinner that we both found just okay, we decided that neither of us had and energy left and we should just set up camp and get cozy. We got some snacks for extra calories and headed over. I feel like I'm short stacking on details today, but my mind was pretty distracted with feeling sick and some other thoughts not appropriate for a public forum. Oh well. There's always more time to muse tomorrow. |

the following is what I wrote a month ago after the event
i can't judge after hand how much danger i was in but i would treat it seriously
luckily has not happened again in this country for a month. hopefully never happens again. although the next time i will have the benefit of having experienced it already
when police arrived i demanded prison for the dog owner in clearest possible way i could. after my speach was done they did not ask me a single word. they could tell i was furious of fear. and better to talk another time. i am so drained from global security work that i can't follow up on this but this should be available for anyone to read that might experience it themselves or take upon their self to wander around this globe as i do
i will probably feel guilty if the owner lose his dogs or hunting permit or reputation in his community. i am not going to judge anyone extremely harshly
if they ask me to fill out a criminal report according to some kind of format standards i am not going to do it myself an experienced prosecutor that has done it before is free to report this or pass it along. just not going to fill in report fields in some kind of form. you do it for me if you want to. i am not doing it. should be enough information to find

i have never heard of such outrageous neglect in dog keeping in my life
the dogs escape unnoticed at night and hunt without human supervision and presumably return in the morning without anyone doing anything about it
this dog owner would make the top ten list anywhere in history
the dogs occasional howl brought up pictures of wolf movies the grey with that guy from Schindler's list the guy that played Oscar Schindler fighting with wolves with broken glass and a big knife to his death but i can safely discard all theories besides a runaway hunting dog militia on four legs in a large pack sounded like at least ten animals
in that immense fear of a completely unfamiliar situation in a life of hiking around the globe thoughts whirled around all possible night mares before i realised it is obviously hunting dogs all else is pure fantasy wolves are absolutely ruled out
they did not retreat when they sensed my presence but stayed in full alarm perhaps as when they encounter prey on a supervised hunt to alert the humans. even though they knew they were alone and no one to alert, they knew i was probably not prey, did not know enough to EVER be alone unsupervised anywhere but home preferably inside, but did NOT know or predict the length of the prison sentence they just brought on their owner by this nightly escapade. whoops
the locals will predictably put the lid on but the power of the internet is a wonderful thing
i can not imagine any circumstance that would make this less than prison anywhere in the union or West europe. now this is the old east. no one understands English etc. one escaped dog barking in the forest. fine. slap on the wrist. possibly losing care of the animal...ten rabid hunting dogs in full alarm scaring the life out of a hiker resting at night. shake those bars for three months. watch that prison television. and there won't be any Marlborough or beers in prison
This began around Four hours after dark on the early night of Sunday 28 April 2024 or exactly 1:00 o'clock
I will first describe exactly what happened and after that separately my interpretation in hindsight when recalling these events three hours later when I can calm down
This is a rather long story so I will get to my point right here before the story
What can I do if I encounter a dog pack like this again except tell at them and calmly leave. What if they hunt me or behave like they are guarding a territory. However remotely that might seems. There is a reason this is a serious crime. Too much uncertainty
Can you confirm that this kind of incessant barking is absolutely impossible in any other animal
In no circumstance whatsoever would any wolf pack or any deer flock behave like this even if I stood right on their den with ten kids inside
The occasional howling is something that dogs still retain from their wolf origin not long ago
It is not unlikely that a pack of hunting dogs alone would howl occasionally
Despite yelling at them several times there was no yell back from a human. Very likely the dogs escape at night without anyone caring about it extremely dangerous and frightening to a hiker that need. Rest at night not the fright of a life time
I could not imagine that in a relatively rich country anyone ever would drive their dogs for a night hunt. Would be absolute insanity. Neglect and alcoholism depression (fΓΆrsupen dumhet Swedish) I can easily imagine. Not outright insanity. Even if night hunting permits are sometimes issued in Germany for "animal control" "population control" of wild pigs. This is a completely separate topic that I will not say more about than that I am working on these issues on and off. My view as a progressive world ambassador could not be further from the idea of shooting at anything anywhere for any reason. Except tranquilizer darts for humane population control of CAPTURED animals not hunted. Captured. It is clear in Sweden that shooting anything anywhere with fire arms does not belong in the future society. Now this is all I will say about this. We are working on this as fast as is possible. The education effort still left on this planet is still enormous and daunting
Regarding dog behaviour in detail I know very little despite inspecting a manuscript by the foremost scientist on the subject that work in Budapest that is most famous for working on the Philippine paradise fish ten years ago before they changed to dogs and removed their aquarium
Dogs in particular have very little room in the professional literature since most pros are not anthropo centric. All mammals share common traits like an early recognition of friend and foe. Dogs in particular has almost never been studied at least not dogs for guarding or hunting. There might be one single work perhaps by one single biologist or behaviour ist ethology biology for shepherds dogs that life with grazing livestock
All books cover territory selection and protection and pack hunting or other flock behaviour. But almost nothing has apparently been possible or interesting to anyone to publish as a professional seeking a career in science in ethology animal behaviour or population biology. so i am not the only one drawing a blank when trying to explain the behaviour with any satisfaction more than anecdotal that is hard to call science
Although the bark was not quite right. more like a dog which I have never encountered at night

Now my primal instinct set in and I envision a pack, a large pack, of wolves near their den the core of their territory. Frothing over my intrusion and ready to approach in full alarm
In hindsight this is just the occasional howling that caused this and everything about this speaks against wolves
IF wolves can behave like this or has been observed or heard doing this in ANY circumstance whatsoever I absolutely need to hear about it because it would bear on my future expeditions
If there is this single wolf dog hybrid pack maybe only one in Europe that I happened to encounter I absolutely need more information. feral dogs that would possibly go unnoticed in Belarus has crossed over to Latvia?
I have never heard of anything like that
All wolf incidents as rare as they are in Poland or anywhere have been with lone wolves that are sick or hungry and have lost their feir of humans
I have never heard of an aggressive wolf pack in Europe or anywhere on the planet
I have seen wolf droppings so many times and spent so much time day and night in wolf territory that I would never expect them to be so aggressive about human scent or sound like that
I have certainly had wolves near me many times but never heard a peep. In Sweden and Norway on long expeditions all summer and even winter and on and off for years from Spain to France Belgium Germany Poland and now here in the Baltics for one month so far direction Finland
The pack was in full alarm with barking and an occasional howl that dogs will still use. But much less than wolves. Wolves never bark together like this in any circumstance I have ever heard it seen if
It is with near certainty the pack of dogs that have hunted there before that happens to live on the farm on the opposite side of the road and escaped west around thousand metres into the forest.

Hiking and trekking and wild camping is MUCH more common in Sweden and Norway than anywhere in the world even Finland that is a close second. It is the Scandinavian spirit. As has recently been proven paleo lithic pre farming humans breed into the farming population only in Scandinavian nowhere else in Europe. I am personally absolutely at peace in nature and hate combustion engines that bother few others
Without getting off track completely I am continuing my expedition around Europe and almost all ground breaking record breaking endeavour of exploration has come from Scandinavia specifically. I am not placing my breed on a pedestal just explaining that if anyone would encounter something like this most likely it would be a Swede and the locals are most likely entirely puzzled why I am not living my life in doors at home or in a comfortable guest house

This is all speculation I just can't imagine what I heard to be a pack of tax (Swedish) small rabbit hunting dogs. These were large animals certainly with courage to act alone without humans
But I don't know anything about common hunting dogs in this region or anywhere so I can't suggest what breed it could have been that could behave this way

I yelled at them as a three hundred kilos silver back gorilla would try to show how big and powerful he was. No wolves ever no matter how big their biggest packs are in Europe would do anything but withdraw. These animals stayed at a distance and gave me the impression that they followed me on the road even. But not close

This location has been used before for hunting and these dogs have been released during supervised legal (presumably) hunting in this exact location
They have smelled or sensed a wild animal and followed it into the forest where they have hunted before
But unfortunately I don't expect them to do anything when the response is "I know nothing". This is obviously a massive incident since I told them I am a scientist that will likely enquire with other scientist and if they cover this up it will explode big time. this is not s minor incident
JΓ€garna is a popular Swedish movie about the sad reality of this kind of stuff. anything related to mis management with hunting or dogs is so deeply rooted in human behaviour since the stone age that the local police do anything they can to forget about it. "Probably just a barking deer" or "wolves are common in the forest" and might bark despite my sincere explanation that this is hunting dogs not wolves and carries a prison sentence if heard in front of a magistrate
if you imagine "i like logic circuit design" the absolute opposite is "i like dogs and hunting". it's as different as a von Neumann machine is from sticks and stones in technological achievement. and a massive education effort is still needed for that population should they not cause a complete collapse of civilization like 1930s Germany. you might like NATURE you certainly don't like fire arms or dogs. has nothing to do with investigating nature. it is not conscious behaviour. but only photographers and hunters visit nature? you are obviously not a scientist ("what is this?" looking at bowling ball in small Lebowskis bath room. I don't expect them to even ask anyone and just hope I forgot about it or they never have any other hikers near that spot at night
The "police report" that I received when they returned from the spot I told them to investigate was exactly that "it was probably just a deer and now I will go home and sleep". that only told ne that the pack had moved or did not respond to a car or they went to the wrong place or most likely could not be less motivated to find them
I gave the female officer that spoke English a stern explanation what would happen in Sweden. Prison. Absolutely nothing else than prison. Grave negligence in dog oversight. No hunting license and no dogs for the rest of his life
This is extremely serious that this is seen as a minor mistake that hunting dogs are stalking wild animals alone at night. Only in Sweden do we understand clearly that HUMANS are in the forest at night sometimes. We have palaeolithic blood lines and the world's foremost paleo biologist among other things. I am a renowned explorer. My father and uncle is one of the world's foremost wildlife photographer for WWF NG etc. Wild life is strictly monitored and controlled and this kind of neglect is absolutely treated with utmost sincerity
Our society is not in a state of civil war. Escaped hunting dogs hunting alone at night. Prison. Period. And the local police that tries to suppress it or treat it with a yawn will be investigated by internal affairs and released from service and prohibited from similar work with a responsibility to investigate seriously
We in sweden have the most aggressive policy in the world to combat this suppression of neglect related to hunting from the local community or any kind of coverup attempt or failure to investigate serious neglect, crime or not, we are not "paragraph riders" (paragraf ryttare) we investigate serious problems. anyone can understand how serious this is before digging after paragraphs

i can't judge after hand how much danger i was in but i would treat it seriously
luckily has not happened again in this country for a month. hopefully never happens again. although the next time i will have the benefit of having experienced it already
when police arrived i demanded prison for the dog owner in clearest possible way i could. after my speach was done they did not ask me a single word. they could tell i was furious of fear. and better to talk another time. i am so drained from global security work that i can't follow up on this but this should be available for anyone to read that might experience it themselves or take upon their self to wander around this globe as i do
i will probably feel guilty if the owner lose his dogs or hunting permit or reputation in his community. i am not going to judge anyone extremely harshly

the dogs occasional howl brought up pictures of wolf movies the grey with that guy from Schindler's list the guy that played Oscar Schindler fighting with wolves with broken glass and a big knife to his death but i can safely discard all theories besides a runaway hunting dog militia on four legs in a large pack sounded like at least ten animals
in that immense fear of a completely unfamiliar situation in a life of hiking around the globe thoughts whirled around all possible night mares before i realised it is obviously hunting dogs all else is pure fantasy wolves are absolutely ruled out
they did not retreat when they sensed my presence but stayed in full alarm perhaps as when they encounter prey on a supervised hunt to alert the humans. even though they knew they were alone and no one to alert, they knew i was probably not prey, did not know enough to EVER be alone unsupervised anywhere but home preferably inside, but did NOT know or predict the length of the prison sentence they just brought on their owner by this nightly escapade. whoops

I will first describe exactly what happened and after that separately my interpretation in hindsight when recalling these events three hours later when I can calm down

Despite yelling at them several times there was no yell back from a human. Very likely the dogs escape at night without anyone caring about it extremely dangerous and frightening to a hiker that need. Rest at night not the fright of a life time
I could not imagine that in a relatively rich country anyone ever would drive their dogs for a night hunt. Would be absolute insanity. Neglect and alcoholism depression (fΓΆrsupen dumhet Swedish) I can easily imagine. Not outright insanity. Even if night hunting permits are sometimes issued in Germany for "animal control" "population control" of wild pigs. Regarding dog behaviour in detail I know very little despite inspecting a manuscript by the foremost scientist on the subject that work in Budapest that is most famous for working on the Philippine paradise fish ten years ago before they changed to dogs and removed their aquarium
Dogs in particular have very little room in the professional literature since most pros are not anthropo centric. All mammals share common traits like an early recognition of friend and foe. Dogs in particular has almost never been studied at least not dogs for guarding or hunting. There might be one single work perhaps by one single biologist or behaviour ist ethology biology for shepherds dogs that life with grazing livestock
All books cover territory selection and protection and pack hunting or other flock behaviour. But almost nothing has apparently been possible or interesting to anyone to publish as a professional seeking a career in science in ethology animal behaviour or population biology. so i am not the only one drawing a blank when trying to explain the behaviour with any satisfaction more than anecdotal that is hard to call science

But presumably Large dogs that can hunt and kill on their own that have been trained to not kill the prey but only stalk it or drive it and make a loud alarm to draw the apes (not condescending just scientific classification of my species)This is all speculation I just can't imagine what I heard to be a pack of tax (Swedish) small rabbit hunting dogs. These were large animals certainly with courage to act alone without humans
But I don't know anything about common hunting dogs in this region or anywhere so I can't suggest what breed it could have been that could behave this way

This is extremely serious that this is seen as a minor mistake that hunting dogs are stalking wild animals alone at night. Only in Sweden do we understand clearly that HUMANS are in the forest at night sometimes. We have palaeolithic blood lines and the world's foremost paleo biologist among other things. My father and uncle is one of the world's foremost wildlife photographer for WWF NG etc. Wild life is strictly monitored and controlled and this kind of neglect is absolutely treated with utmost sincerity

And the local police that tries to suppress it or treat it with a yawn will be investigated by internal affairs and released from service and prohibited from similar work with a responsibility to investigate seriously

I will not name any names but I have met a couple that lived in a remote valley in Portugal where their two large extremely aggressive dogs (even after ten minutes they were extremely uncomfortable with my presence and would not listen to their owner's calm regarding my encounter near their caravan on Canary islands) hunt together and bring home food. Literally drag it home to the family. Needless to say they have no kids and I will not say more about it more than the point that large dogs can easily on their own learn to hunt wild game. Hello, folks! As the results of various B Schools have been pouring in, and everyone here is in a mad rush to figure out which colleges want them and which colleges they (should) want, I've been seeing a lot of uninformed (at best) and intentionally misleading (at worst) opinions going around. The problem here is that while I, having wrapped up my MBA journey a while back, am a little more adept at sniffing out the BS than the average aspirant - many others in this journey are understandably quite clueless (as was I back in my day, to the point where I didn't even know about SP Jain till after I joined C!), and often don't know better.
So, how do you navigate these choppy waters?

- Always be skeptical on Reddit. Understand that anonymity is a powerful tool - which on one hand can be used to share privileged and even scandalous truths, but on the other hand can also serve as a façade for ulterior motives. So, if you find any particularly concerning posts or testimonials, make sure to run it by a large enough sample space to significantly dilute the ill-intentioned opinions.
- NEVER sought subjective opinions from MBA grads and students (e.g., is the consulting culture good? Is the campus pretty? etc.). Always frame your questions to ensure the answers are purely facts and numbers (e.g., how many consulting firms come to campus, and how many folks get placed there? What's the approximate split of green areas to concrete structures, and how many water bodies exist? etc.). Even with your best interests in mind, their definitions of "good" or "bad" may not align with yours, and give you the wrong picture of what to expect there. So figure out what facts and numbers qualify as "good to have" and "must have" across all aspects of your MBA experience (you could even set this up as an Excel matrix), and tailor your questions to fill in the blanks.
- NEVER ask current students their opinions on other colleges. They've barely spent long enough in an MBA to know their own college, let alone judge others' - and college tribalism can run very deep. Only ask about college opinions from the current students and alumni of said college, along the lines discussed in point 2.
- Target questions to the right audience. If you want to know about placement outcomes and future prospects of a particular college, talk to alumni of said college (preferably those who've spent at least a couple of years in the industry) - anything the current students know is only from the lens of a single placement cycle and hearsay, and their advice might be biased due to their attachment to their college (which diminishes as you gain work ex post MBA). However, if you want to know about things within the campus itself, defer to current students (since alumni may not have the time to discuss those aspects of your MBA journey, and current students would have the most updated info on the same).
- Likely goes without saying, but always maximise your sample space for feedback. If you're discussing post-MBA prospects for college A, try to talk to at least 5+ alumni - if you can get feedback from 8-10 alumni, you'll have a rich source of consistent data that isn't tainted by subjective experiences or individual biases. Likewise, for internal matters reach out to as many current students as you can, for the same reason.

I have a ISO layout (portuguese) wired keyboard (Xtrfy K4 TKL) that's connected directly to a ASUS ProArt monitor. That monitor connects to my Macbook Air M1 through a Type-C cable. It acts as a USB hub and also provides power. The issue I have is that by being wired through the monitor, I can't make Mac OS apply the ISO layout. I can go through the Keyboard Setup Assistant and it recognizes my keyboard as a "SONiX" device (have no idea what that is) (screenshot here), and recognizes ISO as its layout (screenshot here). But after applying it, I still can't get some of the keys to be right (like some accent keys, or the plus and minus symbols). I tried deleting the keyboard configuration file, to no avail. Is there any way to see the devices that are plugged to my Mac to troubleshoot what's going on?
EDIT: Tried with a different Bluetooth keyboard and have the exact same issue. This is what it looks like on the Input Sources screen - notice that the diagram shows a small Return key, which does not correspond to an ISO keyboard. So the issue really is with Mac OS, not the USB hub or the keyboard itself.

Hey all!It's been a rough month for me and Linux.. I run a dual boot system with two separate hard drives- Debian Linux (Bookworm) and Windows 10 using GRUB as a bootloader. I recently broke my Debian Trixie installation, which is what prompted me to install Bookworm, but I ran into a completely new problem before I'd even finished installing.
The new installation was done in the same way I always do it- via bootable USB created through Rufus. However, when I actually booted to the USB to set everything up, I was unable to use my laptop keyboard. I rechecked the image I was using (debian 12 netinst) and reformatted the USB, but no change. I plugged in my USB keyboard and it worked fine, so I decided to finish setup to at least get something workable. Now that I can boot, I'm able to see the following messages at boot:

Important to note is at this point (and even now), the laptop keyboard works fine with Windows, so it's not a hardware issue. I assume this can't be an issue with the iso image or everyone would be having issues. Is there some kind of GRUB configuration so that Debian is able to access all hardware resources on boot or am I looking at this the wrong way?
Edit: I'm on the ASUS TUF A16 and after having a few other issues, it looks like Deb12 may not have all the drivers necessary for this laptop. Fingers crossed that I'm wrong, but will I likely have to go back to Trixie?

Iβve had a very successful career working for a large global company as a program manager for the past 13 years. During this time, I accomplished a lot of the goals I had set for myself, saved (invested) a decent chunk of change.
Iβve considered a career switch a few times as Iβve always enjoyed mentoring and teaching in my current career more than anything else Iβve done professionally. I enjoy learning new things, like to write, and enjoy researching vague topics that we need to define direction on.
In the past, I felt the opportunity cost was too great to get my PhD. I didnβt want to trade in a 6 figure job to be a lowly student again. However, Iβm overseas now and in a situation where I can no longer work for the next ~year (spouses job reassignment). I have a lot of big picture research topics I would like to dive into after working in the industry and seeing their impacts first hand. This got me thinking about using this year to study for an apply for PhD programs.
What are some considerations for a 30 something year old to enter the field? I love the idea of research, am used to working 60+ hours weeks effectively, and have enough savings/dual income where money isnβt a big consideration. Has anyone made a similar switch? Should I be concerned with my massive gap from academia (13 years since I received my MBA)?
