Short story - D&D: The Goblins' Pact

The Goblins' Pact Story and image by Hotpot AI
The sun was setting over the rolling hills of the kingdom of Cormanthor, casting a warm orange glow over the land. In the distance, the sound of drums and chanting could be heard, signaling the start of a grand celebration. But this was no ordinary party—it was a gathering of the bravest and most skilled adventurers in the land, all brought together for a noble quest.
Among the guests were a fierce warrior with a sword strapped to her back, a wise wizard with a staff in hand, a nimble rogue with daggers at her side, and a noble paladin adorned in shining armor. They were all strangers to each other, but they shared a common purpose—to bring peace to the troubled lands of Cormanthor.
Their mission was to negotiate a peace treaty with a tribe of goblins that had been terrorizing a nearby village. The villagers were desperate for help, and the king had called upon these adventurers to put an end to the conflict. It was a dangerous task, but one that these seasoned warriors were more than capable of handling.
As they made their way towards the goblin camp, the adventurers could feel the tension in the air. The goblins were known for their fierce and violent nature, and the thought of negotiating with them was enough to make even the bravest of warriors shudder. They were even known to be able to fly and float like ghosts! But they had a job to do, and they were determined to see it through.
The goblin camp was a chaotic mess of tents and makeshift structures, with goblins of all shapes and sizes scurrying about. The adventurers were greeted by a group of goblin guards, their spears at the ready. But before any blood could be shed, a figure emerged from the largest tent in the camp.
It was a goblin, but unlike any the adventurers had ever seen. He was tall and imposing, with a regal air about him. He introduced himself as Grommash, the leader of the goblin tribe. He welcomed the adventurers with a surprisingly eloquent speech, inviting them to join in their celebration.
The adventurers were taken aback by Grommash's demeanor, but they accepted his invitation and joined in the festivities. As the night went on, they learned more about the goblins and their way of life. They were a proud and honorable people, with a deep connection to nature and the land.
But as the night wore on, the adventurers couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. They noticed strange markings on the goblins' weapons and armor, and overheard whispers of a mysterious figure known as the "Dark One." It seemed that there was more to this conflict than meets the eye.
The next morning, the adventurers set out to meet with the goblin leaders and negotiate a peace treaty. But as they approached the tent, they were ambushed by a group of goblin warriors. It was clear that Grommash had no intention of making peace, and the adventurers were forced to defend themselves.
In the midst of the chaos, the adventurers noticed a figure lurking in the shadows. It was the Dark One, a powerful sorcerer who had been manipulating both the goblins and the villagers in order to gain control of the land. With a wave of his hand, he summoned a horde of undead creatures to attack the adventurers.
The battle was fierce and intense, with the adventurers using all of their skills and magic to defeat the Dark One and his minions. In the end, it was the paladin who landed the final blow, banishing the Dark One back to the depths of the underworld.
With the threat of the Dark One gone, the goblins and villagers were able to come to a peaceful resolution. Grommash apologized for his actions, explaining that he had been under the control of the Dark One's powerful magic. The adventurers were hailed as heroes, and the villagers threw a grand feast in their honor.
As the adventurers sat around the fire, enjoying the food and drink, they couldn't help but reflect on their journey. They had come together as strangers, but through their bravery and determination, they had forged a bond that would last a lifetime. And as they looked out at the peaceful village and the goblin camp, now living in harmony, they knew that they had truly accomplished something great.
From that day on, the adventurers were known as the saviors of Cormanthor. Their story was told and retold, becoming a legend that would be passed down for generations to come. And though they may have started as a party of D&D adventurers, they had become so much more - they were heroes, united in their quest for peace and justice.

2024.05.16 06:44 watermelon668 Dyslexia or ADHD?

I was diagnosed as an adult with ADHD. I know that sometimes people who have ADHD are misdiagnosed as having Dyslexia, but I also know that they're very comorbid. I have some Dyslexic traits and my friends think I have mild Dyslexia, but I'm not sure if they're just byproducts of my attention issues.
Arguments FOR me having Dyslexia are
1- I subvocalize and cannot read well when there's verbal noise
2- I'm not a great speller, though I don't think I'm atrocious.
3- More importantly than generic spelling, I'm have big holes when it comes to phonetics. So like I will spell Rogue 'Rouge' 100% of the time bc I feel like the word should end with the g, and the u coming after feels wrong. If a word has a letter that could be a or e, I get it wrong (consistently vs consistantly, both sound right in my head so idk which one is wrong). I also often WILDLY misread Proper Nouns, I thought the name 'Lalonde' was 'Lanode' for years.
4- Bad at remembering names
5- Not great at left and right. As a kid both hands looked like L's. As an adult I can get it right about 70% of the time instantly, and 30% of the time need 2 seconds to remind myself which side of my body is my left.
Arguments against me having Dyslexia are
1- I didn't have any problems learning to read as a kid (again wasn't a great speller but wasn't in the bottom percentile or anything)
2- I was a voracious reader as a kid, though that fell off when I started having my own phone
3- I have a good vocabulary and I don't think I'm particularly bad at remembering words in the moment. Sometimes my mind will blank on things but it's more often street names or something like that than forgetting the word for fork.
4- I wasn't good at grammar as a kid, but I'm very interested in linguistics now and find it very interesting. I feel like I'm comprehending it all very well, and I'm currently learning a new language and while I have some weak spots, I don't think I'm struggling particularly hard.
I feel like all my Dyslexia symptoms *could* be a product of ADHD and having trouble with attention. That being said, I'm not afraid of the label or anything. So if there's a resounding 'yes this is Dyslexia it doesn't matter what the Root of the issue is' I'll gladly make use of it!

2024.05.16 06:38 Hotpot-creations Short story - Fantasy: Mirror of Malice

Short story - Fantasy: Mirror of Malice
Mirror of Malice Story and image by Hotpot AI
The year was 805. In the Danish village of Skælskør, and indeed throughout the whole kingdom, the land was shrouded in darkness. Denmark was ruled by a tyrannical King Gudfred, who cared only for his own power and wealth. In this bleak world, a rogue named Eadric roamed the countryside, always on the lookout for his next acquisition.
One day, while exploring an abandoned cottage in an overgrown forest, Eadric stumbled upon a mysterious hand mirror. It was unlike any he had ever seen before, with intricate designs etched into its frame and a shimmering surface that seemed to hold secrets within. As he gazed into the mirror, he saw something that sent a chill down his spine—his own darkest desire.
Eadric was both intrigued and disturbed by the mirror. He had always been a selfish man, driven by his own desires and ambitions. But this mirror showed him a side of himself that he had never acknowledged before. It was a side that craved power and control, a side that would stop at nothing to get what it wanted.
As he continued to gaze into the mirror, Eadric realized that this was no ordinary object. It was a powerful artifact, one that could reveal the darkest desires of anyone who looked into it. And with that knowledge, he saw an opportunity to gain even more wealth and influence.
But as he reached out to take the mirror, a voice echoed through the castle. "Do not be tempted by its power, for it will only lead to destruction," the voice warned.
Eadric looked around, but there was no one in sight. He shook off the voice and grabbed the mirror, tucking it safely into his bag. He couldn't resist the allure of such a powerful object, and he was determined to use it to his advantage.
But as he made his way back to his hideout, Eadric couldn't shake off the feeling that he was being watched. He dismissed it as paranoia and focused on his plans to use the mirror to gain wealth and influence.
However, his plans were soon derailed when he received a visit from a group of dark agents. They were servants of the King, and they had heard about the magical mirror. They demanded that Eadric hand it over to them, or face the consequences.
Eadric knew that he couldn't let the mirror fall into the hands of the King's agents. He had seen firsthand the destruction and suffering caused by the King's rule, and he couldn't bear the thought of the mirror being used for such evil purposes.
But at the same time, he couldn't bring himself to destroy the mirror. The power it held was too great, and he couldn't resist the temptation to use it for his own gain.
As he struggled with his decision, Eadric was suddenly struck with a realization. The voice he had heard in the castle was not a figment of his imagination—it was the mirror itself, warning him of the danger it posed.
With this newfound knowledge, Eadric made his decision. He would not use the mirror for his own benefit, nor would he destroy it. Instead, he would hide it away, keeping it out of the hands of both King Gudfred and himself.
But as he made his escape, the dark agents were hot on his trail. They would stop at nothing to get their hands on the mirror, and Eadric knew that he was no match for them.
Just when all seemed lost, a group of rebels appeared, led by a powerful sorceress. They had heard of Eadric's possession of the mirror and had come to his aid. With their help, Eadric was able to escape and hide the mirror in a secret location.
As he watched the rebels ride off into the night, Eadric knew that he had made the right decision. The mirror was safe, and he had played a small part in the fight against the tyrannical King.
But even as he breathed a sigh of relief, Eadric couldn't help but wonder about the true nature of the mirror. Was it truly a magical artifact, or was it something more sinister? And what would happen if it fell into the wrong hands?
As he rode off into the night, Eadric knew that the mirror would always be a temptation, a reminder of the darkness that lurked within all of us. But for now, it was safe, and that was all that mattered.
Little did he know, the mirror would continue to play a role in the kingdom's fate, as it fell into the hands of the rebels and was used to reveal the true desires of the King. And in the end, it would be the downfall of his reign, bringing about a new era of peace and prosperity for the people.

2024.05.16 05:33 mossyshack Part III Post Mortem - Holy Guacamole Folks!

Ok. Literally just closed the laptop. LET’S DO THIS. Buckle the fuck up.
The music is stellar, so many moments of this episode where I was like “holy shit holy shit holy shit”. Chills. Remember those moments where when the Avengers first hit the big screen? You couldn’t help but smile with glee? That was this ENTIRE episode.
Mega spoilers ahead:
Jubilee, face-palm-blast-fucked bastion. How fucking incredible was that move? Single handedly, might have been the best move of the series. Sunspot saved her later, and has finally embraced being an x-man. Rogue put the beat down of all beat downs, and lest you forget, reminded you of his name. The fucking PHOENIX force had to come out to fuck shit up because what the fuck else was gonna stop Bastion?! The Summers family showed despite the dozens of attempts to kill them, they’re still ALIVE, and they’re here even in the there after.
Age of apocalypse is somehow in effect, but a young apocalypse is there before is reign has started, the x-men saved the current world, onslaught was on the brink - but remains subdued for now, and the Summers’ trials and tribulations continues, but way in the future, will they leave their son behind AGAIN?
Gambit is still dead?!?? leech, arch angel, banshee, so many others. Bishop is BACK, but has something up his sleeve to go get the X-Men.
Sign me the fuck up for 8 more seasons because this roller coaster ride is fun as fuck and I don’t ever wanna get off. This episode packed SO SO much into it. Charles and Magneto dialogue scenes, action and moves that were beautiful, villains showcasing their monstrosity, characters progressing, villains doing evil shit, villains being defeated!, having hope and losing hope for earth, and then so many NEW questions coming up.
Lap bars down, seat belts bucked, hands up. LET’S GOOOOO!!!!!!

2024.05.16 03:09 SnooTomatoes1821 Monster on cover of monster manual

So my question is pretty simple, on the front of the grim hollow monster manual there is an undead with four arms facing off against a Mjork Burner but what it the name of the undead?
I have read through most of the books looking for the undead that it could possibly be but have failed to find it. Does anyone know what type (the name) of that undead is and what page in the grim hollow monster manual it is on?

2024.05.16 01:17 woohooguy Thank you Carvana - Bridgecrest - SilverRock (5 year review)

I wanted to share my experience with the entire Carvana package now that our car is paid off and all monetary transactions with them are over.
This will get long, as it started in 2019.
We bought our 17' Rogue from Carvana in April of 2019. I was researching vehicles for close to 3 months before finally pulling the trigger on this particular model. It was about 34k miles, 2.5 years old, located in Illinois. I liked the geographic area for chances the vehicle hadn't seen a lot of snow for the first 2 years of it life as Carfax activity showed it was most likely in the southern part of the state.
I also chose this specific Rogue as the VIN indicated the vehicle was made in South Korea, as opposed to Tennessee. The difference is all Rogues made in South Korea received engines and CVT's from Japan, while US made models had engines from Japan or US, and CVT's from Mexico which was a no go for me. I will also go one more and state Korean labor for assembly is far more disciplined than what you find in the US and especially mexico. Fun fact for those still paying attention - The Nissan Rogue's that have the flat Nissan logo on the grille behind smoked plastic were made in South Korea. They stopped production there in early 2020.
What interested me in Carvana was-
  1. Buying a car is the sleaziest most frustrating process from a dealer
  2. I could hand pick from an inventory of cars across the country willing to pay for delivery
  3. They offered me 500 dollars off the final price of a car in a letter campaign, as they were still growing
I started looking over inventory for a month, and decided to sign up and go for the soft credit pull to see what terms Carvana would offer. I was prequalified for a used car loan through my credit union, so I wanted to see Carvana's terms would be. The loan and term tools were pretty damn cool at the time, you could just jiggle those sliders and almost completely tailor a lending solution to fit your needs.
After the soft credit pull and a single pay stub, Carvana pre-approved me for any car up to 90k, with zero money down. I laughed. Hard. I had decent credit but wasnt going to bury myself.
After I settled down to a few models, I worked through the trade-in portion of the site, and found it was real easy to get a quote to trade in our 2005 Escape XLT which was a great car, but in Ford fashion the frame was rotting away. I had a fair offer for the trade in, described it honestly.
We also opted for the SilverRock warranty. Nissan, CVT, etc.
The big sale!
After watching how quickly some cars came and went early on, I got everything I needed for the trade in. Scan of the title, picture of the milage, car pictures. We were putting 2k down on the car, so the cash was waiting in my account, ready for transfer or cashier check if we were going to go with Carvana final loan offer.
The day I pulled the trigger on our Rogue, the entire process took all of 20 minutes. I was amazed, and honestly thought at the time "This should be illegal for how easy that was".
The offer for Carvana finance was within a couple tenths of my credit union, so I opted to simplify the process and go with them. Carvana performed a hard pull on my credit, confirmed the terms, and required confirmation from my bank that the money for deposit was in my account. I provided my bank login credentials and the process was done in minutes.
I had to provide a copy of my license and items related to the trade in, and it was done, in literally 20 minutes. I wondered if I was making a mistake..
It was an amazing deal, every dealer in the area was selling the same model for well over 2k of what we paid, so the SilverRock warranty was pretty much free after the additional 500 discount off the final price of the car.
Delivery - Trade in!
It was delayed. Twice. Pretty disappointing. Some pretty lame excuses. Honestly I should have expected a reasonable delivery date as the I knew the car I bought was 1500 miles away, but Carvana makes unrealistic delivery promises and is my biggest gripe regarding them.
When delivery day finally came, the Rogue was everything I had hoped it would be. While on the delivery truck I asked to inspect the undercarriage, and the driver was super friendly and allowed me to take my time. I looked it all over, looking for rust, oil leaks, you name it and I found nothing nothing, including nothing suspect like it had been cleaned. It was a 2-ish year old car with light dirt and surface rust where you would expect.
Once the Rogue was unloaded I was free to look it over with a fine comb, pop the hood, check the fluids, look for dents and dings, paint issues, interior issues, you name it. I found nothing major, just some minor things like paint polish slag in small corners and what not. Interior was very clean and detailed.
While I was looking over the Rogue, the delivery driver was loading the trade-in. He took some pictures, verified the mileage, checked the "check engine" light was off and started loading it on his truck.
I live in Massachusetts with very strict license and registration requirements. A few days before the delivery, someone from the Danvers site reached out to me about the registration details. I was transferring the plates from the trade in and they were finalizing the paperwork. I was provided the new registration, and the delivery driver had the new registration in hand so we could just put the plates on the Rogue and be ready to roll.
I took the Rogue for a 20 minute test drive, signed off on the purchase and trade. Driver headed off with the trade in and that was it. Carvana never called or questioned what they gave me for the trade.
Post delivery!
The very next day I brought the Rogue to work, I work in transportation/logistics and my site has ASE mechanics that I know very well. I asked him to go over the Rogue with the white glove and let me know if they think anything is wrong, as I have 6 days to return the car. They did so and they didnt find anything, just amazed at how clean the undercarriage, engine, and fluids were.
If I didn't have access to an ASE certified mechanic in this situation that I really trusted, I would have paid for a purchase inspection from a Nissan dealer. I did pay for the trusted inspection, just not in dollars lol.
After the personal vehicle inspection, my wife and I took off for a long weekend road trip roaming the White mountains of New Hampshire. Three days across many miles that easily blew out the initial vehicle 7 day warranty mileage. The Rogue was amazing through the mountains getting a ridiculous 30mpg through the entire trip. I wasn't concerned as people I trust cleared the car, and I also had the SilverRock warranty to cover the rest..
Speaking of warranty..
SilverRock!
The first, and pretty much only issue with the Rogue, was at about 48k miles. Massachusetts has a comprehensive yearly vehicle inspection program. At about 48k miles, the Rogue failed inspection for a bad inner tie rod, passenger side. Contacted SilverRock, and they gave me the local network shop here in Massachusetts, Monro.Monro is a regional repair shop here in MA with many locations. I take the Rogue to them and they diagnose that indeed the passenger side inner tie rod has gone bad. Repair tech states he has never seen one go bad on a Nissan at the current mileage.
The service manager starts looking around for the parts, called about 5 places, then calls a Nissan dealer. The Nissan dealer informs him the inner tie rod is not available for the 17, the only way to to repair the defect is replace the entire electric steering rack which comes with the inner and outer tie rods complete.
I call SilverRock with the service manager. I provide my name and vehicle make, SilverRock knows who I am right away. SilverRock rep asks whats wrong, service manager laid it down. SilverRock rep transfers us to a manager, manager asked about a few more details and then asked the service manager of Monro to send the estimate.
I get a call from the manager of Monro the next day, he said he went back and forth with SilverRock for about 20 minutes and got the entire job covered, throwing in a free front end alignment, for 1500 dollars using a genuine Nissan OEM steering rack.
SilverRock paid everything but the 100 dollar deductible. I picked up the Rogue 2 days later, paid 100, and went back for inspection. It passed.
Anyone reading this that knows about car repair, an inner tie rod costs maybe 150 dollars OEM. The fact it wasn't available and they had to replace the entire rack was absurd, yet they did it with a new OEM rack. At the time SilverRock could have required a rack used from a salvage yard, but they didn't.
I have nothing but positive things to say about SilverRock.
Bridgecrest!!
The silent partner.
I have NEVER spoken to someone at Bridgecrest. I have never called them. They have never called me.
I have NEVER emailed Bridgecrest. They have emailed me every single month for the life of my loan, after making a payment.
They fronted me the money, and expected it back. I paid it back, as expected. On time.
5 stars, and they will return the favor on my credit now that the loan is clear.
WHY YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY
Do your homework - buying a car is a capital investment in your future that loses money. You need a car to be reliable for your job, your family, your life. You need to spend money on a regular basis to keep that car reliable, on top of your car payment.
Know your budget - Dont fall for finance traps. Only buy what you can comfortably afford, again, owning a car costs you more money than what's on the final loan payment.
Get your car inspected ASAP - Pay a dealer for a purchase inspection. Schedule it ahead of time. Inform Carvana of the issues within 3 days of delivery and ask them to pick up the car. Carvana will make the car right, as they dont want to take the car back from qualified buyers. Keep on top of them until the car is what was expected.
Why Carvana may be bad for you
You have bad credit - Better know what you are signing on for. The majority of complaints in this sub are from people that have bad credit, cant read, and cant learn from past mistakes. Thats a personal problem, not a Carvana problem.
Closing
Aside from some delays in delivery, We have had an amazing 5 year journey with Carvana and associated companies. Our Rogue is now at over 100k miles and still drives and looks like new. We perform all maintenance as required, without question.
Living in MA, the last 5 years our Rogue has taken us thousands of miles over the White Mountains of New Hampshire, all through the Mountains of Maine, and multiple trips to Canada to visit the iconic Niagara Falls.
My wife travels every day for work, and the Rogue is her daily driver putting 3k miles on the clock every 2.5 months. We change the oil every 3k miles, perform the required CVT services at the dealer, and keep the tires rotated every 8K.
The tires that came on the Rogue from Carvana were in fact new, but the kind of tires that have a 30k mile treadwear warranty. The first snowy New England day we slipped through a stop sign in light snow, the next week we replaced the tires all around with BF Goodrich Advantage TA sport tires and the Rogue has been amazing in the snow ever since.
After getting our Rogue, my coworker was so impressed he bought not 1, but 2 cars from Carvana. Bastard got both cars delivered on time, on the same day, from different parts of the country.. I was so jealous lol. His cars had some minor issues, but Carvana took car of them.
My daughter bought a Nissan as well from Carvana. It had a few front end issues, but ultimately was taken care of through constant communication with Carvana during the 7 day test drive.
Will I use Carvana again? Yes.
Will it be soon? Not really.
Our other car is a Hyundai and running strong.
Hope some of my diatribe will be useful to anyone considering Carvana as usually is all bad mouth drival posted here.

2024.05.16 01:04 ThatAnimeSnob Separating Class from Race

The core game uses archaic rules from a time when races and classes were the same thing. It’s why having a hero named Elf and another named Rogue who is also an elf can cause confusion. Nowadays they are seen as different aspects of a hero and are often combined for more variety. Meaning an elven rogue is different from an elven wizard. Thus depending on what you combine, you can get the following variations of heroes.
.
1: The core barbarian is a class and his race is human. He gets no special abilities, but he has the most Body Points of any other race.

If you want to make him an elven barbarian, give him Opportunistic Strike (Rogue ability). He has 7 Body Points.

If you want to make him a dwarven barbarian, give him Ambidexterity (Rogue ability). His starting weapon is a hand axe, his strength is 2 instead of 3 (he has the Rogue limitation to Shortswords but for axes), and he has 7 Body Points.

If you want to make him a halfling barbarian, give him Combat Mobility (Rogue ability). He has an extra Defence Die while not wearing armor (Bard ability) and has 7 Body Points.

If you want to make him a greenskin barbarian, give him Courage (the fire spell, recharges whenever he gets 3 Body Points of damage). He has 7 Body Points.
.
2: The core dwarf is a race and his class is trapper. He gets the ability to disarm traps.

If you want to make him a human trapper, he can also set a spear trap (can’t use another until the first is activated or removed). He has 6 Body Points.

If you want to make him a dwarven sorcerer, he is like the elf and can also set a spear trap (can’t use another until the first is activated or removed). He has 5 Body Points.

If you want to make him a dwarven wizard, he doesn’t have armor restrictions. He has 3 Body Points.

If you want to make him a dwarven knight, give him Knight abilities, plus Rock Skin (the earth spell). He has 6 Body Points.

If you want to make him a dwarven rogue, give him Rogue abilities, plus Pass Through Rock (the earth spell). He has 4 Body Points.

If you want to make him a dwarven warlock, remove one of the three Warlock abilities. He has 5 Body Points.

If you want to make him a dwarven bard, remove one of the three Bard spells. He has 5 Body Points.

If you want to make him a dwarven druid, remove one of the three Druid spells. He has 7 Body Points.

If you want to make him a dwarven monk, has 3 earth styles only (strength of mountain, speak with stone, and rock skin from earth spells).
.
3: The core elf is a race and his class is sorcerer. He gets 3 spells.

If you want to make him an elven trapper, he can search for traps from doors, without having to go in the rooms. He has 6 Body Points.

If you want to make him an elven wizard, he is like the wizard but has 12 spells and 3 Body Points.

If you want to make him an elven knight, give him Knight abilities, plus Tempest (the air spell). He has 6 Body Points.

If you want to make him an elven rogue, give him Rogue abilities, plus Swift Wind (the air spell). He has 4 Body Points.

If you want to make him an elven warlock, give him Warlock abilities, plus Genie (the air spell). He has 3 Body Points.

If you want to make him an elven bard, give him Bard spells, plus Swift Wind (the air spell). He has 3 Body Points.

If you want to make him an elven druid, give him Druid abilities, plus Genie (the air spell). He has 5 Body Points.

If you want to make him an elven monk, has 3 air styles only (eye of the storm, soaring dragon, and Tempest from the air spells).
.
4: The core wizard is a class and his race is human. He gets 9 spells and has armor restrictions.

If you want to make him a halfling wizard, give him Combat Mobility (Rogue ability). He has an extra Defence Die while not wearing armor (Bard ability) and has 7 Body Points.

If you want to make him a greenskin wizard, he is like the wizard but has 6 spells and 5 Body Points.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Joke:
Q: Nelson Mandela, Tuberculosis and Long John Silver walk in a bar. Who are they talking about as they go in?
A: Probably William Ernest Henley (1849-1903).
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Poet, journalist, literary critic, editor, publisher, translator and Victorian-extraordinaire, Henley, was a good friend to Robert Louis Stevenson, who he inspired to write the character "Long John Silver" in Treasure Island. Stevenson, writing to Henley-" I will now make a confession: It was the sight of your maimed strength and masterfulness that begot Long John Silver ... the idea of the maimed man, ruling and dreaded by the sound, was entirely taken from you". The friendship was a tumultuous and long one.
Henley's sickly daughter, Margaret, was the inspiration of "Wendy" in J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan. She would not live long past her 5th birthday, the only child Henley had with his wife, Hannah "Anna" Johnston Boyle. Tragedy had long painted his life even before this sad event. He was diagnosed with a rare form of tuberculosis at age 12, that affected his bones. His left leg had to be amputated below the knee when Henley was a young man, and he was often in the hospital with various abscesses that need to be drained. Frequent illness kept him out of school and interrupted his professional work. Henley eventually sought out the advice of Joseph Lister, who was pioneering new techniques, including antiseptic operating conditions and doing groundbreaking research on wounds, when his right foot become affected by the tuberculosis. Still, his ill-health did not keep him from practicing his art. While Lister kept him under observation at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, from 1873-75, Henly wrote and published a collection of poems, which includes today's selection, In Hospital (1903). This collection of poems is notable also because it was one of the earliest examples of free verse in English poetry. Henley and others in his group became known as the "Henley Regatta" for their championing of realism, such as the poor working conditions in the Victorian underbelly, in opposition to the Decadent movement in France and the Aesthetic movement closer to home. This would be the last collection of poetry and the most impactful of his work; his death would follow later that year. Unfortunately, a fall from a carriage reawakened the latent tuberculosis hiding inside him, which carried him off age 53. He was buried next to his daughter, in Cockaney Hatley, Bedfordshire. His wife would later also be buried alongside her family.
His legacy is one that is both inspiring and rather dispiriting. His poetry was used for jingoistic and imperialist causes, and to champion war, though much of it was about personal striving and inner resolve-the mythical "Stiff Upper Lip" of the Victorian era. This led to push back in the literary world, as D.H. Lawrence's short story, "England, My England and Other Stories" took flight from one of the lines from "Pro Rege Nostro", which is more patriotic than his usual work. Admittedly, he counted himself as a conservative and supported the imperial effort, as much of Victorian society did at this time. Still, his work fell into obscurity, with the main exception of "Invictus"-Latin for "unconquered". It is well known that Nelson Mandela recited this poem to his fellow inmates in Robben Island as a reminder to stay strong and keep one's dignity. There are also, of course, the Invictus Games, which are held for injured and sick service men and women and veterans in the UK.

Winston Churchill to the House of Commons, September 9, 1941:
"“The mood of Britain is wisely and rightly averse from every form of shallow or premature exultation. This is no time for boasts or glowing prophecies, but there is this—a year ago our position looked forlorn, and well nigh desperate, to all eyes but our own. Today we may say aloud before an awe-struck world, ‘We are still masters of our fate. We still are captain of our souls.'” (link)

Sidney Low, in "Some Memories and Impressions – William Ernest Henley". The Living Age (1897–1941) describing his friend:
"... to me he was the startling image of Pan come to Earth and clothed—the great god Pan...with halting foot and flaming shaggy hair, and arms and shoulders huge and threatening, like those of some Faun or Satyr of the ancient woods, and the brow and eyes of the Olympians." (link)

Andrzej Diniejko on Henley as "poet as a patient" and his work predating modern forms of poetry "not only in form, as experiments in free verse containing abrasive narrative shifts and internal monologue, but also in subject matter". (link)

"Invictus"
by William Ernest Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Some things to discuss might be the title. How does the defiant spirit of this "Unconquered" opening play throughout the lines of the poem? There is also a reference to the Bible Verse Matthew 7:14 in the poem, "Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it". Why do you think this is included? What lines stand out to you? How do you see him fit into the Victorian literary furniture, if you will? Have you heard this poem before? How does this fit in with the melancholy feel of the Bonus Poem, if you read it? What other poets do you enjoy from this era of literature?

2024.05.16 00:43 Canadian-Sea-Gypsy X-Men: Evolution… 24 years too late.

Thanks to u/pillow-socks, I had the pleasure of watching X-Men: Evolution…24 years too late. Here are some random thoughts. If only to spark some discourse.
Although I prefer X-Men TAS+’97, I can appreciate why this show is loved. It’s a fresh and well engineered take on the X-Men mythos. It felt like they wanted to go in their own direction but where held back in for some reason. Perhaps a bit too insecure to move away from the Fox franchise. Perhaps executive meddling to promote brand synergy, I don’t know.
On that note, Wolverine’s costume change to the ultimate style was weak. Felt unnecessary.
Some of the long plays were surprisingly good. I didn’t think it was a coincidence that the principal was named Kelly but when he started the mayoral campaign and commenced a life in politics, it made sense. Chef’s kiss.
Deciding to show case the X-Men and Brotherhood was a good call. It allowed for some interesting story telling and rival dynamic. It also allowed for characters to develop outside there designated alignments and walk the line. Avalanche and Rogue are excellent examples and added a nice change from some two dimensional characters.
I wasn’t sure about them going to a random high school when they were literally living in the institute (school for gifted youngsters) but it makes a lot of sense in as the show developed. The nuances of learning in high school vice learning to control their powers and why the two locations was lost on me at first. Obviously I was biased by the traditional take on the school. However, it was an excellent way to show case discrimination. It felt more personal than just the typical indiscriminate prejudice. When the community turned on mutants it felt real.
Jean Gray’s character was surprisingly the best written version I’ve seen to date. She wasn’t a ‘perfect trophy’ girl but it was clear you could easily fall for her. She had personality, something I think is absent sometimes in depictions of her. There is a tendency to make her an object of affection, instead of a person. It generally impressed me throughout. I love the part where Scott calls her holier than thou commentary out in one of the early episodes. A great and humerus line.
Spyke was a walking cliché and boring until he joined the morlocks. Even his name was misspelled to be edgy. His entire character felt contrived and forced. Give him a 90s catch phrase and the circle is complete. I’m so glad the character then blossomed when he left the team with purpose. It was the right call. It’s a shame it happens so late. I wanted more.
Kitty… or was it 90s TAS Jubilee? They feel like the same annoying teenage trope. I’m sorry super fans, she was my least favourite character.
Interesting move to make Wolverine and Storm the elders. In my opinion Wolverine was used well and wasn’t over exposed. Although the final episodes felt like he was taking over when assaulting the pyramids. It felt like a missed opportunity for Cyclops to step up and see some fruition to his character arc. Overall, I appreciated the show’s dedication to maintaining an ensemble cast but it dropped off a bit towards the end.
Juggernaut’s origin and deviation from source material was just lazy. Literally an unnecessary throw away line for his limited screen time.
Scott and Jean’s relationship built organically and was well done. The absence of the Logan triangle was refreshing, as was Rouge’s crush on Scott. Although it was tragic, felt grounded, natural and not forced. It’s a shame we didn’t get enough time to see Rogue and Gambit grow. At least they got a moment.
Overall the seasons pace felt strange and off at times. For the most part it moved well and had meaningful growth, rarely maintains a status quo for the sake of it. Sometimes they would just have random filler episodes that distracted from the larger plot. Season 4 comes to mind as Apocalypse was very present and they just kind of ignored it for a few episodes. In later episodes they kind of implied they were at an impasse but if I wasn’t watching the episodes in order and instead on TV, I would have thought I missed some.
Loved that they found a way to put all the original X-Men in, not just an episode but, a mission together. Awesome.
I’m off to start Wolverine and the X-Men. Spoiler alert: watched the first episode and not impressed that they took the worst parts of the Fox movies and used that as a weak premise to make Wolverine the focal point. I know… I’ll give it a chance. On a positive note I like the character designs. Wolverine’s costume is great. I love the cowl.

2024.05.16 00:08 Just-a-Guy-4242 Feel good moments…

I see a lot people that post in frustration and worry that they’ll never be “good” at programming, so I wanted to ask for some feel good moments you’ve experienced on your journey to learning programming… I recently had a pretty awesome moment that boosted my confidence, in my programming ability and knowledge.
TLDR: Hobbiest, worked on a personal game project over a year ago, came back to it to improve it, and found my code was well organized, well written, easily adaptable and expandable. Made me realize the studying I have done actually stuck, and maybe I’m not as green as I thought. :-)
I am a complete hobbyist, I work on projects solely for the joy of learning a new skill that just so happens be making video games, which I grew up loving, but have never understood how to program.
I started learning Unity and C# during the tail end of the pandemic, and I quickly discovered I really enjoyed coding, and making games, but understood that, realistically, at 37 years old, I would not be changing careers, so just took the process at my own pace, I worked through the C# Players Guide(5th edition, I think) I completed almost every tutorial series on GameDev.TV that had to do with Unity or C#, and watched many topic specific videos on YouTube, Udemy and skillshare…on topics like AI, Pathfinding, Procedural Generation, ShaderGraph, 2D, 3D 2.5d…
Rick Davidson, Penny de Byl, Brackeys, CodeMonkey, Jason Weimann, Tarodev… amoung many others, have been my teachers. I have made many small tutorial projects, and a couple larger “intermediate/advanced” tutorial projects, but nothing that was really my own, I’d just been enjoying the process of learning and making simple fun games.
Well, a little over a year ago, March 2023, I decided it was time to start my own project. I had no delusions of grandeur, I had no plans on actually releasing anything. I just had an idea for a game, and I wanted to see if I could build it from scratch. So I did.
My game plays like a 2 player board game, Two Factions: Good Vs. Evil, both factions with Three races to choose from (Humans, Dwarves, or Elves, and Demons, Monsters or Undead) with dice rolling, a hex grid game board, different phases for each players turn, combat between units( a basic attack that did a predetermined amount of damage), the goal was to collect 7 “energy” nodes randomly scattered on the board, 3 on each side of the board and one on the center Hex.
Each side takes turns moving their 3 unit types (a collector, a warrior, and an Overseer), around the board, trying to eliminate the other players collector, and collect the nodes before the other player. If a collector is destroyed you have to use collected energy to span a new one. Its all set in a fantasy setting, and the scene is set to look as if your playing a board game in a medieval pub.
I did some really complex (at least to me) things too. Each match is set on a procedurally generated game board, set to look like the chosen game board environment (ie, grasslands, sand dunes/desert, volcanic wastes, wintesnow).
I built my own state machine to manage each players turn. With multiple states, an optional “magical misfire” state, that only occurs if the player rolls a 1 during collection.
I built my own Camera Managment system utilizing cinemachine, it’s simple but it keeps track of which camera is active, controls the camera movement for each players camera… etc.
I built my own player notification system, that allows for timed notifications system that both sends to notification panel for immediate display, and also a log for players to refer back to if needed.
I have multiple managers to keep things compartmentalized, and as OOP as possible.
I created multi base classes that all have numerous heirs, and came up with ways to make everything customizable and unique. Each player has a choice of 3 factions, all with their own UI, their own HomePieces, each unit is unique, and it looks pretty good because I have been using humble bundle since I started learning to get a very large collection of synty model packs, and high quality UI assets.
After 3 months. I had a working game loop, a very customizable game board generation system, and had pretty much accomplished what I set out to do. Everything in my initial development document had been implemented. However, the gameplay itself wasn’t very fun. It all worked and looked pretty good, but it just didn’t have any umph. (I have not added any “juice” either, so it was pretty stale) I decided I had reached the point where I was a little lost on where to take it. I had been spending A LOT of time working on it, 4-5 hours a day on top of my full time job working customer service at the airport. Yes, I was enjoying it, but I burnt myself out, and I started getting frustrated that I seemed to be stuck. I could not think of anything useful or fun to add. I had ideas, but I couldn’t think of how to implement them… and if I did try something new, I couldn’t work out how to get it to sync up with every thing else, and things just kept breaking. I thought “I’m too deep at this point, and I must have too much spaghetti in my code.”
I felt happy with where this project had ended, as it was complete, and everything I had put in my initial planning document was implemented and working…and, I was actually really proud of some of the systems, like the hex grid generator, and the procedural terrain generation, and all the ideas I had about how to initialize the whole thing and get it all working over multiple scenes, with multiple players… I learned a lot, and really enjoyed it over all. I was happy, but felt I had taken as far as I could. Even though I had ideas I wanted to do, like different actions for each unit, different spells for each faction type, etc.
As I said, I was feeling burnt out, I had enjoyed the process but, it had taken its toll. So I took a break from Coding. Not really knowing how long it would be.
I got really into Oxygen Not Included, and spent hundreds of hours building colonies, and trying to reach the temporal tear… I have yet to make it, sadly. I then spent a while playing My Time at Sandrock, and happily built up my workshop, while helping uncover the conspiracy of the stolen water, and returned the desert to a lush oasis… I played many other games in between as well, finding myself analyzing the mechanics, the presentation, the feel… Then the itch came back. I hadn’t even opened Unity in almost a year. I had had a lot of ideas in the in between. Specifically ideas about what I could do to improve the game I had created. So, I thought”I’ll try something simple, see what I remember…“
I found, it was like hardly any time had passed at all. I was a little fuzzy on some things, and I needed a few reminders of syntax and other small things that popped up, but any issues or forgotten techniques were quickly remedied and remembered.
However, I was nervous to revisit my game. I remembered how frustrated I was when I decided to take a break. I just KNEW I had too many dependencies, I just KNEW everything was spaghettified mess and I would be in a nightmare of refactoring to clean things up. Plus, I had read so many Reddit posts about revisiting code, even from just a couple weeks ago, and the programmer not remembering anything about it… like they couldn’t even remember writing it, let alone what it did… So I thought it would be a futile experiment to try and improve my game.
But, I was curious if I could improve things, and add some of the ideas I’ve had. So, I opened up the project, and played my game for the first time in almost a year. I noticed a few issues right away, remnants of my final attempts to improve my game while at the end of a burnout, that I frustratingly couldn’t figure out how to fix at the time. Like the player pieces spawning in the wrong rotation (facing away the opposite of where they were supposed to face.) or the game board generation, if the board wasn’t viable, it was supposed to reset and start over to generate a new board… it was, but the finalization of the regenerated game board wasn’t receiving a certain list of prefabbed terrain tiles, and would spawn those as null, so nothing would appear, where there was supposed to be a terrain tile. So I decided tackle those two issues first.
I dove into the code… and to my surprise, where I expected to find a mess of random variable names, or confusing methods, that do multiple tasks, creating a grid of confusion… I found logical code that made sense. Properties were named in a way that I knew exactly what they were for and what they contained, I could follow the path way of calls and understood what was happening, where.. it had been almost year and I hadn’t even looked at this code, and I understood what was going on. I refactored/rewrote a few areas, and got the unit spawning rotation and the generation reset issues resolved. Surprised at how well I was understanding my old code. I decided to be a little bolder, and rework how moving the players units worked. Originally during the movement phase, the player would roll a D6 and could move each of its units, any number of spaces up to their dice roll, on the board. I wanted the different units to feel more unique, each with their own “stats” as it were, so I added a few variables, reworked a few lines of code, and soon enough I had the movement I was liking for, each unit with its own distance, no dice roll needed. Also, it was fairly easy. I was able to make the adjustments to the code and get the results I wanted without breaking things, without effecting any other aspect of the game, as intended, in a way that made total sense working with the other systems. I am now fairly certain that my frustration and inability to get the result I wanted or expected, was due to burning myself out, by not prioritizing my mental health over my enjoyment of coding.
I have since begun work on improving my game again, in earnest. With a healthier work/life/coding fun balance. I have been working for a couple more months since picking it back up. And I have been able to implement entirely new systems, such as a gamePieceAction system that allows each unit to have unique attacks and abilities, Allows for different types of ability use during the different phases of the turn, so collectors can have collection abilities, were warriors have combat abilities, and each players home can have support abilities like healing units, buffing units, etc…
I have added a FogOfWar system that disallows the players to see each others moves, and I have come up with a lot of ideas for how to improve things, and it’s all working and fitting together without causing a huge headache and without having to refactor half the code to work, my initial attempt was actually pretty good, and I am able to implement the ideas that I think will make it more fun, maybe I’ll get it to a point that I can share it for others to play too, and I am excited to be back to doing something I truly enjoy. Thanks for reading!

2024.05.16 00:04 Shaskais Interesting bits from Warhammer+ Loremasters video "Allies and Auxiliaries of the T'au Empire"

-When the Imperium first encountered the T'au they were little more than primitive herders and hunters.
-The primitive T'au diverged into subspecies such as the stout hills folk who excelled at farming and mining and the aggressive plain dwellers who warred with each other over hunting grounds.
-The T'au established their first off-world colony on the largest moon of their homeworld
-The T'au's diplomatic process of assimilating an alien race can take generations. It steadily progresses through trade deals, cultural exchanges, and defense treaties. By the time an alien race fully embraces the Greater Good, they might believe it was their idea to do so.
-When diplomacy fails, the T'au resort to warfare. The Fire Caste is deployed and they aim for swift victory with little collateral damage. These invasions are seldom portrayed by the T'au as wars of conquest. Instead, the T'au frame them as the Empire protecting its planetside interests and allies, bringing stability to a troubled world, or preemptively securing its borders.
-Ultimately, the T'au consider war a lesser evil when compared to letting alien civilizations wallow in ignorance. As the T'au see it, these alien civilizations must join the Empire for their own good.
-The T'au are generous in victory. Even the populations that resisted them are met with programs of rebuilding, extensive reeducation, and thorough analysis of their strengths and traits to determine the best ways they could serve the Greater Good.
-Some of the assimilated population will remain on their homeworld to work for the Greater Good. Others will be shipped off elsewhere to further their integration, to better use their talents and skills, or to lower the chance of insurrection.
-When the T'au claimed the Imperial hiveworld of Agrellan, the T'au relocated portions of the population to other sept worlds to ease the overcrowded conditions of the hive cities. This saved their lives for when the Imperium returned to Agrellan they subjected the world to extermintus rather than allow humans to live under the rule of Xenos.
-Unlike the Imperials, the T'au believe that aliens have a right to exist. Not only that they believe that alien races are superior to themselves in some aspects. As the T'au Castes each excel in their fields, each alien species can use its superior talents to benefit the T'au Empire.
-T'au governments are made up of councils. Even Aun'Va, the Ethereal Supreme, is a member of the Ethereal Council albeit the foremost among them. He is advised by respected members from Castes.
-Non-T'au rarely achieve positions of true authority within the T'au Empire. However, they are valued as representatives, intermediaries, and advisors.
-Regional councils usually have a sixth seat for a non-T'au delegate. This position is called the Kindred Soul. The Kindred Soul offers outside experience and perspective to the council.
-Trusted aliens are given visible positions of administration and security for their own communities.
-In the multicultural T'au cities and ports, Rogue traders openly trade and do business. Ordos Xenos Inquisitors disguise themselves there as human merchants.
-Psychic powers in the T'au Empire are limited to their alien allies. The T'au refer to these abilities as Mind Science, Memetic vectors, and Subspace manipulation. The T'au value these powers and they use alien psykers in interrogations and security scans. One notable case of their usefulness for the Empire is when Shadowsun consulted psychic alien allies about the unnatural abilities of the Death Guard.
-The psychic race the Nicassar was the first species to join the T'au Empire. They have bear-like snouts and their flat limbs end with fearsome massive claws. Despite their incredible strength, the Nicassar are not a warlike people. They prefer to serve the T'au Empire by being star guides.
-Among the races that have yet to join the T'au Empire but nonetheless are considered valued partners and mercenaries are the Kin of the Leagues of Votann. The Kin have maintained a long-standing beneficial relationship with the T'au Empire. This lucrative relationship fueled the rise of the Seran-Tok Mercantile League who traded the initial technology of Ion weapons to the Sept of Dal'yth.
-Kin ships often sail alongside T'au fleets as allied vessels surely in exchange for considerable payments.
-When the T'au encountered the Kroot, the Kroot civilization was on the verge of collapse due to a massive Waaagh! invasion. A T'au expedition fleet was dragged into the conflict on the side of the Kroot. The T'au aided these strange brave aliens liberate their worlds from Ork aggression.
-Imperials once witnessed a Kroot arm wrestle an Ogryn. The Kroot won, and he severed the Ogryn's arm for his prize. The Kroot afterward consumed it and according to the Imperial observers he treated the arm as if it was a holy relic before doing so.
-Kroot avoid consuming Chaos-tainted or Tyranid flesh for fear of the taint spreading into their bodies. T'au flesh is also forbidden officially for diplomatic reasons. If there is another reason why the Kroot don't consume T'au flesh only the shapers know it.
-The Treaty of Pech does not officially condone the Kroot mercenary work for other races. However, it's likely that the T'au turn a blind eye to these activities recognising how it strengthens their allies and seeing the benefit of having Kroot agents in the wider galaxy that they cover up with plausible deniability.
-The Kroot are uniquely loyal to the T'au Empire with billions of them serving in its armies.
-One of the fastest-growing species in the T'au Empire is humanity
-The T'au endeavor to make the integration of their human citizens, or as they call them the "Gue'vesa, as smooth as possible. The Imperial Faith is allowed albeit with some alternations that explain away the anti-Xenos doctrine.
-The more dedicated Gue'vesa reject Imperial culture altogether choosing to take on T'au style names and ink their faces with blue tattoos.
-Imperial defectors are valued for their insights into the Imperial war machine and dogma allowing the T'au to prepare for future conflicts. They are also useful for providing insights about strange foes.
-The T'au rely on the Kroot to sniff out Tyranid infestations but the Kroot can't catch every trace. When it comes to the GSC the Imperial Guard and Navy defectors have far more experience in rooting out the gene-cultists.
-Many Gue'vesa have been born on Sept Worlds as natural citizens of the T'au Empire. These Empire-born humans join integrated security forces, fight alongside Fire Caste Cadres, or become agents for enlightenment cells on Imperial worlds.
-Gue'vesa are considered to be traitors and deviants of the worst kind by the Imperium. They are to be purged and destroyed wherever they are located.
-For many the T'au Empire is a beacon of fragile hope in a galaxy gone mad, offering shelter from xenocidal crusades and galactic anarchy. Yet for the Greater Good to function it requires many lesser evils. The Water Caste diplomacy can destabilise entire worlds and the peace offered by the Fire Caste comes from the barrel of a pulse carbine. Alien cultures are eroded and warped to serve the needs of the Empire and at every turn the truth is manipulated.
-The Fourth Sphere T'au are mentally scarred by what happened to their alien auxiliaries during their voyage. This led to an extreme prejudice that resulted in atrocities and tragedies in the Chalneth Expanse. Despite this, the T'au Empire cannot afford to remove them entirely from the frontlines.
-The fate of the Fourth Sphere's auxiliaries remains a guilty mystery for the T'au as well as how the Fourth Sphere escaped from the Warp. Some of them speak of being dragged into Real Space by a vast manifestation that appeared as a faceless being with many arms, the arms of many species, some T'au, Kroot, human, and others.
-As the T'au continue to study the collective psychic potential of mankind and its tendency to spawn irrational miracles, some wonder about the consequence of indoctrinating so many races into the Greater Good.
-The consequence is a deity born from a philosophy, a goddess of the Greater Good.
-Whatever obstacles lay ahead, alien auxiliaries are crucial to the success of the T'au Empire. As the light of T'au'Va shines on more and more worlds and entire populations embrace their common manifest destiny, the number of alien races willing to sacrifice everything for the Greater Good increases.

2024.05.15 21:44 W00LYS Cust feat balance help

If the names "Pip & Beans" mean anything to you, please stop reading.
I hope this is an appropriate sub to post this, sorry if not!
Hello, I've made custom feats for each of my players and id like some guidance on balancing.
Bard -
2 new uses of bardic inspiration;
Diving Keel; while flying, move more than 25 feet in a straight line and attack. On a hit, add the number rolled on your bardic inspiration to the damage. If attacking a huge or smaller creature, the creature must make a strength save against your spell save DC. On a failed save they are pushed 10ft in the direction the PC is travelling.
Offensive blockade; if a creature that has been given inspiration and uses the inspiration to add to a melee attack, on a hit the enemy creature's movement speed is reduced by 10ft until the start of the player's next turn. This reduction is increased to 15ft if the PC is within 20ft of the creature. // Wizard -
"Wins" about engagement with information allows the Player to access "Intellectual Aegis", this condition grants the following benefits;
Advantage on intelligence saves and checks. Gain temporary hit points equal to intelligence modifier. Gain cold resistance.
This lasts 4 hours or until the PC experiences an "L".
*I recognise this is very subjective and so balancing for those not in the game might be difficult - for context this player as part of their character notes down wins and losses day to day. An example of a win is "knowing things others don't and explaining these things to them", and example of a loss is "someone correcting my information". // Rogue -
Gain advantage on initiative checks.
Can use a bonus action to access "Blitz", this condition grants the following benefits;
15ft movement. Advantage on dexterity saves and checks. +1 AC. This Lasts 5 rounds (30 seconds)
Can activate this a number of times equal to the PC's constitution modifier. // Paladin -
You can spend 10 minutes exercising with your companions, shoring up their physical prowess. When you do so, choose up to six friendly creatures (can include yourself) within 40ft of you who are participating in exercise with you. Each creature can gain advantage on their next Constitution save and Strength save/check. A creature can't benefit from this feat again until it has finished a short or long rest.
Player with this advantage must declare it after the roll but before they know the result. // Druid -
At the start of everyday, the PC can choose to speak to animals, this has the effect of the "Speak with animals" spell but lasts the entire day. Once the PC can access 3rd level spells, he can choose between speaking to animals or plants for the day. Speaking to plants operates the same as the "Speak with plants" spell but lasts the entire day.
Possibly helpful extra information;
Party composition is - Aaracockra Bard, Merfolk Wizard, Changeling Rogue, Firbolg Paladin and Warforged Druid. All are level 4.
Some of these are obvious riffs on spells/magic items. Sorry for any poor spelling/formatting!

2024.05.15 21:41 lordofthelosttribe [Online][D&D 3.5][Sundays][12pm-4pm][UTC-4][Heavy RP][Long Term][18+] Looking for players for serious homebrew campaign

After saving the Kingdom of Alba from the undead army, our adventuring company is invited to meet with the Kaiser of the Holy Hessian Empire to congratulate them as well as closing accounts of several groups who assisted them.
A brief synapses of what's going on. Now comes the long read so crack open a cold one.
Free. No need to worry about playing.
Like the title suggests, I’m looking for six players for my homebrew campaigns. I will be running this story using D&D 3.5. That means I’m not using 5E. It should be obvious but I tend to have one or two prospects say they made a character and they used D&D Beyond. D&D 3.5 is older but it’s what I really got into when I started table top gaming and it’s still my bread and butter.
Since I said Online, I will be using Discord for VC and Roll20 for combat.
Starting Level is 5 and wealth is 4,500 GP for equipment.
The day we will be playing is Sundays and the times will be from 12pm to 4pm. The time zone for that is EST or UTC-4 for those across the pond. Also the times are sent in stone so if you’re interested but the day and time isn’t good for you, I’m afraid the times won’t change for you.
This is a Heavy RP Campaign so I expect quite a bit of talking and interactions with the world. I am planning at least one combat per session unless there’s a point in the plot that requires more. If you’re shy or you’re a person who just like listening to and not contributing, you might not have as much fun as the others.
Long Term means this won’t end in a few months. I plan to have everyone starting and level one and end at level 20. I don’t use milestones so experience point will be awarded by combat, finishing quests and tasks, or if I find the roleplaying during the session incredible.
The 18+. Besides the descriptions I will use for scenes, I also use images for descriptions. The world can be cruel at times and you can see and witness that during certain interactions. As a way to help explain how dark the world can be, for those Anime/Manga lovers think Goblin Slayer or Berserk. For TV show lovers, think Game of Thrones. I’m not saying that my world is dark and bleak, but scenes can be. If what you wanted is a light hearted game where good triumphs over evil, this isn’t for you.
Six players. Most of the time you have 4 but I prefer six. Typical parties have a Fighter, Rogue, Wizard, and Cleric. With six you have more additional classes to a 2nd to assist. Also this help with continual weekly session. If one or two people are unable to attend then sessions can still continue. I always found that a drag when not enough people show up and sessions had to be cancelled. That being said, I also am looking for players who can be consistent. If you can play every other week due to prior commitments then I don’t think that will work for me. Real life happens. I know all too well that. If you can’t make it please just let me know before hand or if you cannot before the next session. I’m sure everyone will become good friends and we just want to make sure you’re ok.
Now on to more of the campaign. For this, the only race you can be is human. Why you might ask? I enjoy the versatility as well as like I said, most of my campaigns are build towards humanoids. Where are the elves, dwarves, and Halflings? They did exist but long since extinct. Now they are human dwarves but that’s a different story. My other reasoning why is there were too many monstrous humanoids in 5E and it didn’t make sense going into a tavern with a Minotaur and Centaur in the party and no one bats an eye or has the exact specifications for furniture or accommodations. Just play Human. I assure you, you’re still going to have fun with all the combination of classes and prestige classes to choose from.
Since I kind of went into a bit of character creation I’ll explain a bit more of that. More will be told if you’re accepted. We’re going by Gestalt rules. What’s that? It’s merging two classes into one. Helps a lot if you want to be a fighter and rogue but don’t want to split levels into then. You can take the highest Base Attack Bonus, Hit Dice, Saves, and Skill points. Lots of good combinations and choices. Every has full hit points so no need to roll for HP when leveling. Lastly the combination of skills together from the classes count as class skills and not cross class for the purpose of skill points. Character wealth is based on level. One last time to note that based upon the nationality of the character, an additional feat is given but skills automatically trained on.
Since this is D&D 3.5, you don’t have to have any experience in order to join. Veterans are welcome as well but I have made some modifications so if a new player to the rules have questions, let me answer them for or if there is no change I will defer them to you. It can be a bit more complicated than 5E but after a few sessions in, you’re get the hand of it. If you played PF1e then you got a basic understating.
The last thing I would like to know is that we’re here to play a game and escape the real world for a few hours a day. I kindly ask all of you who are interested to keep certain discussions to yourself or DM each other and not on the server. If you want to meme that’s fine but bring up political beliefs and religion, it’s better to just have private conversations.
