Good day, brothers and sisters!
I turned 26 years old on April 4th, I live independently and have a stable job I love very much, so I figured it would be a good time to look for something serious. Disclaimer: I'm Byzantine Catholic and I want to join the clergy (just saying because it might turn Latin rite ladies off).
A few things about me:
-I study history at university and should be done next year; -After this, I want to enroll into seminary to join the clergy (Byzantine Catholics don't practice priestly celibacy though and can get married, just in case you didn't know); -I've been a choir member for years and singing is one of my passions. I go to the local chapel every day to practice. Perhaps I'll send you some recordings; - I serve at the altar in both the Byzantine and Latin rites as an altar servant. Maybe I'll show you my beautiful vestments; -I'm an adventurer. I've traveled to Athens by myself when I was 17, and the furthest away was California, among many other places; -I'm an avid nature enjoyer and animal lover. I can state at a bumblebee doing their job without getting bored; -I love reading and writing. It would be a plus if you'd be open to send and receive snail mail in order to build a special bond; -I work as an editor at a publishing and printing firm, and I love it very much; -I'm pretty extroverted. I love spending time with my many friends, and making new ones is usually no issue for me; -I'm loyal, serious and committed when it comes to relationships; -I love doing hands and crafts (a friend of mine and I are thinking of opening our own Etsy shop) I make prayer ropes and rosaries!

MAIN CHARACTERS

RHYSAND

Rhys (also Rhŷs) is Welsh in origin and means "ardent, enthusiasm." It has deep roots in Welsh culture and is the name of several famous Welsh kings and noblemen, including Rhys ap Thomas, a solider who rose to prominence during the Wars of the Roses.

FEYRE ARCHERON

Feyre is a variant of Feyre and is Old English in origin. It means "fair, beautiful." A similar name in Old Norse is Freyja (also spelled Freya), meaning "Lady," denotes a woman of nobility. In Norse mythology, Freyja is a goddess associated with love, beauty, fertility, sex, and war.
In Greek mythology, the Archeron is one of the five rivers of the Underworld and is often the principal river through which the ferryman Charon transports the dead. It said to be the River of Woe or the River of Misery.

CASSIAN

Cassian is Latin in origin, means "son of Cassius," and denotes one of the oldest families in Rome. Arguably the most well known Cassius was one of the leading instigators of Julius Caesar's assassination plot.

AZRIEL

Azriel is Hebrew in origin meaning "God is my help." In some religions, Azrael is the benevolent angel of death who carries souls of the deceased to the afterlife.

MORRIGAN

The Morrígan is a Celtic goddess associated with war and fate and is seen as a guardian of the earth and its people. Her name means "great queen" or "phantom queen."

AMREN

Amram is of Hebrew origin and means "exalted people." It is the Biblical name of Moses' father.
Note: This tracks with Amren being able to interpret The Book of Breathings which is a play on the very real The Books of Breathing, a collection of ancient Egyptian funerary texts.

NESTA

Nesta is the Welsh version of Agnes meaning "pure, holy." May also have potential connections to Nestor, a legendary Greek king who was known as a great warrior and for the sage advice he offered younger soldiers.

ELAIN

Elain is Welsh in origin and means "fawn." Elaine is associated with the Greek name Helen meaning "light, bright one."
Fun fact: Elain is an anagram of Aelin.

NYX

Nyx is the Greek mythological goddess and personification of the Night. She is the mother of Day (Hemera) and Darkness (Erebus). She often appears alongside other celestial deities such as Selene, Helios, and Eos.

Emerie has Old German origins and means "home strength, brave, powerful."

ENALIUS

In Greek mythology Enyalius is a son of Ares but is also a byname for the god of war. He is often seen as the god of soldiers and warriors from the Ares cult.

Devlon is Gaelic in origin and related to the name Devlin meaning "fierce courage."

BALTHAZAR

Balthazar is Akkadian in origin meaning "God protects the King." It is a name commonly attributed to the wise man who gifted myrrh to the Christ child (the myrrh symbolizing the future death of a king). It is an alternate form of King Belshazzar who played a pivotal role in a coup d'état that overthrew a Neo-Babylonian king.

PROTEUS

Proteus is a prophetic sea god in Greek mythology and means "versatile, mutable, capable of assuming many forms."
ACOTAR role: Proteus is Emerie's father and was killed in the war with Hybern.

BELLIUS

May refer to Belus, the Babylonian god of war.
ACOTAR role: Bellius is Emerie's cousin and was slain by Cassian during the Blood Rite.

KALLON

No clear references found, but kalon in Ancient Greek translates to "ideal perfect beauty."
ACOTAR role: Kallon incited the Illyrians against the Night Court leaders and was ultimately slain during the Blood Rite.

HEWN CITY

KEIR

Keir is Gaelic, meaning "dark," and is related to the Irish name Ciarán. In Greek mythology, the Keres (singular being Ker) were female death spirits who personified violent death. There is a suggested connection between the Keres and the Valkyries of Norse mythology, each representing opposite ideals; the Valkyries being benevolent deities in death, versus the Keres representing feasting destruction.

THANATOS

In Greek mythology, Thanatos is the personification of death. He is a minor figure, often referred to but rarely appearing in person (I see what you did there, SJM).
ACOTAR role: Thanatos is mentioned briefly by Keir during the alliance meeting with Eris.

CLOTHO

In ancient Greek mythology, Clotho is the youngest goddess of the Three Fates and spins the thread of human life. Her name means "spinner."

MERRILL

Merrill is of British origin meaning "sparkling sea, sea-bright."

GWYNETH BERDARA

Gwyneth is Welsh in origin and means "blessed, happiness." In Irish mythology, the Lady Gwyn is a headless woman (cough, Catrin, cough) who chases wanderers at night. In Arthurian mythology, Guinevere has an evil half-sister—"False" Guinevere—who bewitches Arthur.

ANANKE

Ananke means "necessity, fate personified." In Greek mythology she is one of the primordial deities and is the personification of necessity and inevitability.

DEIRDRE

Deirdre is Gaelic in origin and means "broken-hearted, wanderer." The name is associated with a tragic heroine in Irish mythology.

CERRIDWEN

Cerridwen is an enchantress in Welsh mythology. She is said to possess the cauldron of poetic inspiration and is regarded by many as the Celtic goddess of rebirth, transformation, and inspiration.

RITA

Rita stems from the name Margarita and comes from the Greek word meaning "pearl." The Greeks promoted pearls as a symbol of honesty and integrity.

No clear connection found, though venda in Latin means "sell" while sev means "strew, spread" and enda means "end." Could also potentially be related to the number seven.

Neve is of Latin origin and means "snow."

Polina has Latin origins and derives from Apollo, though it could also be seen as a variant of Paulina/Paul meaning "little, the younger."

RESSINA

Resina means "resin of the pine." Plants secret resin as a protective response, guarding them from insects and pathogens.

ARANEA

Aranea is Greek in origin and denotes a genus of orb-weaving spiders.

TAMLIN

From the "Ballad of Tam Lin," a legendary ballad from the borderlands of Scotland. Reminiscent of the fairytale Beauty & the Beast where a mortal woman plucks a rose and encounters a man in the forest, later learning he is captive to faeries. She must hold onto him as he is transformed into various beasts and upon his rescue, the faerie Queen muses that she should have taken out his eyes (Lucien, anyone?) or capture his heart (Tamlin's stone heart) to prevent his escape.

LUCIEN

Lucien is French in origin and means "light." Lucian was also the name of a Hellenized Syrian satirist who was known for his tongue-in-cheek style is said to be the inventor of comic dialogue.

ALIS

Alis is a variant of Alice and translates to "noble, exalted."

Ianthe is Greek in origin and means "she who delights." In Greek mythology she is a water-nymph daughter of Oceanus and a companion to Persephone when she was abducted by Hades.

Bron is Old English and means "brown."

HART

Hart has Irish origins and means "hero, brave, firm." A hart is also the term for a male deer and in Celtic mythology, the white hart is said to appear when one is transgressing a taboo (Tamlin's whipping of his other sentry comes to mind).

Theia is a Titan and is the Ancient Greek goddess of sight and vision. She is the parent of Helios, Selene, and Eos. She is most known not for her own role, but for that of her childrens'. Her name means "goddess, godly."

SILENE

Selene is the Ancient Greek goddess and personification of the moon. She is the daughter of Hyperion and Theia and sister to Helios and Eos.

HELENA

Comes from the Green name Helen meaning "shining light." There are various Helens in Greek mythology: Helen of Troy, Helen a friend to Aphrodite, and Helene the Amazonian who fought Achilles.

FIONN

VASSA

Vasilissa is Greek in origin and means "queen, empress." It is also the name of a Christian child martyr who was left unharmed during her capture, but after her release was slain in a field as she prayed.

BRIALLYN

Briallen is a Welsh name meaning "primrose." Primrose comes from the Latin word meaning "first" and the primrose flower often represents youth and renewal (SJM, you dog—this may be my favorite tongue-in-cheek naming thing you did).
ACOTAR role: Briallyn is the first queen who enters the Cauldron and is rewarded with immortality as a withered old hag.

DEMETRA

Demeter was the mother of Persephone, an Ancient Greek goddess of the harvest and an emblem of growth.
ACOTAR role: Demetra was the golden queen who provided the mortal half of The Book of Breathings to the Night Court and was subsequently slain by the Attor.

ANDROMACHE

Andromache means "fighter of men." In Greek mythology, she was representative of the suffering of Trojan women during the war and was famous for her virtue and fidelity. Andromache was also the name of a famous Greek Amazonian who fell at Troy.
ACOTAR role: Andromache was the former mortal lover of Mor.

THE SURIEL

Suriel is a Hebrew name meaning "God's prince, divine authority." May also reference Sariel, an angel from Judais tradition, one of the seven holy angels. He is considered to be a primordial power invoked for his protective powers.

ATTOR

Possibly an altered form of the German tatter meaning "goblin, puppet." Likely inspired by the Ahool, a bat or primate-like winged cryptid said to live in the jungles of Indonesia.

Stryzga is a female demon in Slavic mythology similar to a vampire. Stryzga stems from the mythological Strix of Ancient Greece, referring to birds of ill omen (and also witches) who fed on human flesh and blood.

KOSCHEI

Koschei is a common villain in East Slavic tales. He is often given the epithet of "the Immortal, the Deathless" and is said to hide his death inside nested objects for protection. He often takes the role of a malevolent rival figure who competes or entraps a male hero's love interest.

Bryaxis was a famous Ancient Greek sculptor. His name may mean "delight, lust."

Midgard is the realm of human beings in Norse mythology, ie Earth. Wrym is an Old Norse word and refers to a wingless and limbless dragon.

THE BOGGE

Bogge is a Middle English word meaning "frightening specter" from which the term bogeyman originated. Bogeyman have no specific appearance and conceptions vary drastically by culture.
Fun fact: A boggart is a supernatural being from English folklore and also derives from the term bogge (Harry Potter facts, yo).

NAGA

Throughout various Asian religious traditions, Angus are a divine or semi-divine race of half-human, half-serpent beings residing in the netherworld.
Fun fact: A female naga is called a Nagi or a Nagini (more HP facts, yo).

MARTAX

A manticore is a Persian mythological creature similar to the Egyptian sphinx. The martax describe in ACOTAR has a head like a lion's and three rows of teeth. A manticore has the body of a lion and eats its victims whole with its three rows of teeth. The term manticore stems from Latin and Ancient Greek.

PUCA

Púca is Irish for "spirit, ghost" while puca is Old English for "goblin." They were said to be shape-changers.

See, thing is, I'm a lover of electronic music and a christian. But there you go, though there's GodsDJs Radio, Christian DJs on Youtube and so on ... Christian Electronic Dance Music (#CEDM) in my opinion still is somewhat a rare jewel.
Personally, I rarely listen to non-christian music. But there's not too much choice for CEDM out there. If you are a lover of EDM and a christian you're kinda forced to ask God for patience and endurance and openness to other genres in this matter: Eg. I really like electro swing, but can't find more than like 10 real CEDM Electro Swing tracks on Youtube.

Earth is a hell world. Its biosphere is highly aggressive, and lethally hostile to all non-native life. There is nothing here that isn't trying to kill you, from the highly virulent viral and bacterial pathogens all the way up through the food chain to multi-ton carnivores capable of hunting prey several times their size. There are insects here that lay their eggs under the victim's skin, which hatch and devour the host alive. Even the plant life is packed with deadly toxins. And the planet itself is un-survivable in many areas, from the ice-capped polar wastes to the large expanses of desert.

The dominant species, humans, are well-suited to their deadly environment. They kill each other constantly, fighting for status, wealth and power. They are much more technologically sophisticated than initial reports indicated, and a considerable portion of their economy is dedicated to armaments production and research. When they discovered the energy potential of a nuclear chain reaction several generations ago, the first thing they did with it was build a bomb. Their brutality has only advanced from there; more troublingly their weapons technology is now considerably more advanced as well, and they have no qualms about using it.

It is the opinion of this infiltration team that attempting to annex this planet would lead to catastrophic casualties for the empire. We cannot even recommend our own exfiltration because of the danger of biological contamination. We sacrifice ourselves willingly, knowing that our mission has saved the lives of many loyal soldiers who would otherwise have been sent to die in this light-forsaken place.

It was a sunny day in Paris. One cannot always trust April, with its sudden showers and temperature swings; poets have often compared it to a moody lover, but then again there's almost nothing a Frenchman can't compare to a woman. Today, April was glorious. All along the Seine the trees were bursting forth in their verdant spring displays, and stray cherry blossom gusted down the streets of Montmartre.

The streets were packed with people. Old men sitting outside the corner cafes they'd known for decades, with a cup of coffee and the morning paper. Old women ignoring their twinkling eyes, or pretending to at least, hurrying home with today's baguette and a guilty pleasure from the nearby chocolatier. Cyclists cruising along the embankment of the Seine in the shadow of Notre Dame, dodging the little dogs that yap excitedly until their owner tugs on their leash. And the young couples walking hand in hand, oblivious to everything but the sun and their love.
​
Someone hurrying through the back alleys of the Latin Quarter did not fall into any of these categories. You could tell he wasn't a Parisian - something about the clothes, the hair, the attitude (or lack of attitude). But he moved with too much purpose to be a tourist. It seemed like he didn't fit in anywhere here, but he definitely had somewhere to be, and clearly he thought it was important.
​
A patisserie, tucked away in a small pedestrian street, with a red-and-white striped awning and battered, wooden patio furniture that looked like it predated Napoleon. If you knew this particular patisserie then you would excuse him his haste. Le Petit Gaulois, with it's little Gallic warrior painted above the door. There were people who'd asked for its macarons on their deathbed.

There were five men sitting at five different tables, each very concerned with their laptop, or the daily crossword, or the dog-eared copy of Les Misérables in front of them. And yet, when the newcomer said:
​
"I'm sorry I'm late."
​
All five of them looked round. Then they looked down the street, one side, then the other. At this time of day there was no one around in this neighbourhood; the locals came for breakfast, but it was mid-morning now, and tourists never made it this far. Apart from these customers, no one would trouble the owner of Le Petit Gaulois - who was behind the counter, propped up on his elbows reading what looked like a biography of Dolly Parton - until the lunch rush.

And so no one would trouble them.
​
"Your security is intact?", one of them asked, likewise replying in English, although somewhat stiffly and with a heavy French accent.
​
"I'm not under surveillance by my government, if that's what you mean. My communication devices don't broadcast without my express permission, but I left them back at the hotel just in case."
​
"Excellent.", said another man with a more neutral accent. "Well, it seems the coast is clear here. Shall we?"
​
One by one they got up pulled their chairs over to the only table capable of seating all six of them. This table had apparently been used as a scratching post by the neighbourhood cats since the time of Marie Antoinette; it was even missing one of its feet, but at some point someone - for reasons one can only guess - had decapitated a garden gnome and filled it with sand to act as a replacement.

"This is... this is a nice place.", the newcomer mumbled. "Very... very..."
​
"Not like home?"
​
"No."
​
They shared a smile. The newcomer was a white male of average height with brown hair and brown eyes. Perfectly nondescript, he would blend in anywhere in Europe or the Americas, and automatically be dismissed as a tourist anywhere else. Three of the men at the table were so similar to him they could be related, although one was wearing a white suit that stood out like a search light, and the other two had more imperfections, as if they had been afraid of being too normal; one had a slightly bigger nose, the other was half a head taller than the others. There was another man who looked older, with salt-and-pepper hair and a grey moustache, and the one with a French accent had a slightly darker, more Mediterranean skin tone.
​
Yet apart from the newcomer, they all felt like they belonged here.
​
"Well, I suppose there's only one question: did you send the message?". The white-suited man said it casually, yet there was a degree of focus both from him and everyone else at the table that suggested there was a lot riding on the answer.
​
There was a moment of hesitation. Then the outsider answered: "Yes. I sent the message, exactly as we wrote it. But..."
​
"You're not having second thoughts, are you?"
​
"Not exactly, but..."
​
"Guilt.", the grey-haired man nodded as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. "He knows deep down he's done the right thing, but he's still finding it hard to reconcile it with his old loyalties."
​
"Are they my old loyalties?", the outsider asked sharply. "I don't know. Before I pressed send I was certain I was doing what needed to be done, but afterwards I felt like I'd betrayed everything I ever believed in. I betrayed the empire. It wasn't that long ago I would have given my life for the imperial cause, and now... now I don't know what I believe in."

"You still believe that Earth is better off not being bombarded into rubble and occupied by an alien empire.", the tall man said. "Don't try to deny it, I can see that much hasn't changed."
​
The outsider hesitated.
​
"You're worrying too much.", the man in the white suit said. "We all went through the same thing. We all came to Earth with a mission. And when we realised that we didn't actually want to complete that mission, of course we experienced a crisis of conscience. But look at us now: do we look like we have any regrets?"
​
"No, but...", the outsider began, slowly, as if he was trying to avoid giving offence. "But you're... I mean, you're..."
​
"I'm Askazian.", the other man replied. "That is what you were getting at, isn't it? From the planet Askaza, eight hundred light-years from here. More usually seen with six limbs and an armoured exoskeleton."
​
The outsider shifted uncomfortably. "Yes, well..."
​
"I'm Askazian, he's Dravki, Kutrukata, Betanog, and Mezeyejdon.", he said, pointing round the table in turn. "And you think that the none of our species are really on a par with the mighty Hratza Empire."
​
"I didn't actually say..."
​
"Hratza propaganda might say we're all inferior species, but the truth is that any one of our empires, hegemonies, confederations or whatever could take on any other. Otherwise they'd have been absorbed by their rivals already. But either way, it's beside the point. We were all just as loyal to our respective peoples when we arrived on Earth. Whether our government actually was the best in the galaxy or not, we believed they were, and we still turned our backs on them. If we could do it, you can too."

There was an awkward silence for a moment. Then the grey-haired man spoke up: "Are any of your team having similar problems adjusting?"
​
"Yes. Maybe. To a lesser degree. Well, they were a bit subdued when I sent the message. But now they're talking about buying a bar in Greece, and starting an alien-friendly hotel if that works out."
​
"Well there you go then. Your subordinates clearly think you made the right decision."
​
"I think you're all missing the most important point.", the man with the French accent said, and despite his species apparently being Betanog he said it with the most French shrug imaginable. "What's done is done. He's sent the message now. If the empire ever finds out he lied to them, he'll be executed."
​
"Well, nothing in my message was technically untrue...", the outsider said. "It's just the combination that might give a misleading impression of how difficult Earth would be to conquer." If his superiors concluded it would take one cruiser more than a few hours, he'd been very misleading indeed. The only way he'd been able to put in the phrase 'catastrophic casualties' was because the Dravki had promised to kamikaze his shuttle into any imperial ship that showed up. But it was true that Earth had plenty of large predators, deadly diseases, and harsh environments... just not really anything Hratza technology couldn't handle.

"Are your Hratza commanders known for, you know what the phrase is... splitting hairs?", the faux-Frenchman asked.
​
"No.", the outsider said morosely. "Skulls, yes, but not hairs."
​
"So what's your problem? For better or worse, you've made your choice now."

"I was raised to die for the empire. My life doesn't come into it. I sent that message because... because..."

"Because after a while on Earth, everyone stops to ask themselves: really, what's the point? Why are we even doing all this?", the man in the white suit said. "Like I said, we all came here with a mission, and we thought that mission was the most important thing in the universe. "Ah.", the grey-haired Mezeyejdon said. "I think I see the problem. You're worried you betrayed your people for selfish reasons. That you were seduced by the soft lives of these primitive humans. That you didn't make a moral choice, you were just weak."

"Well, aren't I?", he asked, shifting uncomfortably like there were splinters in his seat (which was unlikely after centuries of being worn smooth by Parisian posteriors).

"You didn't just save this planet for yourself.", the elderly alien reminded him. "You saved it for your team, who would otherwise have had a taste of paradise and then had to go back to the empire and get on with their lives knowing what they were missing. And you saved it for me, and everyone else at this table. And of course, you saved it for the eight billion humans on this planet." He paused, then leaned in. "But I think most importantly of all, you saved it for everyone else across the galaxy. I doubt it will happen in our lifetimes, but I'd like to think the day will come when so-called civilized species will take a look at Earth and, like we did, ask themselves whether humans might not have a point. If the empire had conquered this planet it would just be gone, forever, but thanks to you there's still a chance that one day, just maybe, everyone might be able to learn something from this place."

"Do you think that could ever happen? Actually, scratch that: do you think it should? It's not like humans are perfect. They are backward, and they can be violent and short-sighted."

"Learning from humanity doesn't mean we have to turn our own planets into carbon copies of Earth. We take the best of what they have to offer, and hopefully they would take some lessons from us in return. Better than conquest and destruction, isn't it?"
​
"Every scrap of indoctrination I was given is screaming at me to say no. But you're right. Maybe I am weak, maybe I like the luxuries here too much, but I think this place is better off without the empire."
​
"Looking at the truth and acknowledging you were wrong isn't weakness. It's the greatest strength of all. All this," he waved vaguely at the street, the city, and the planet around them, "isn't just empty luxury. It's evidence that there's more to life than imperial doctrine."

The francophone alien rolled his eyes. "Enough talking. Enough empty philosophy. There is only one way to truly prove to him that he made the right decision. You want evidence? I'll get you evidence. René!", he shouted into the patisserie. "Deux éclairs à la crème chantilly, et un chocolat chaud. S'il vous plait."
​
The proprieter of Le Petit Gaulois put down his Dolly Parton book with ill-disguised irritation at his customers that only a Parisian small business owner could truly master, but he didn't drag his feet. A few moments later there were two eclairs in front of the outsider, and a hot chocolate with a swirl of whipped cream. Handmade, of course. Any Parisian pâtissier who used whipped cream from a can would be run out of town by an angry mob. The outsider looked uncomfortably at the pastries, like a Catholic priest at a wet T-shirt competition. Condensation glistened on the chocolate frosting.

"Go on, eat.", the francophone alien ordered. "In fact, take just a single mouthful of that, and tell me that the universe isn't a much better place with René's éclairs in it."
​
He hesitated for a moment more, then like he was handling a live bomb he picked up the éclair, and took a bite.
​
"Well, Captain Varlg?", the white-suited Askazian asked. "Did you make the right decision, or didn't you?"
​
Captain Hrusk Varlg of the Hratza Imperial Intelligence Service closed his eyes for a second as he savoured the éclair, and the moment. Then, he made his decision.
​
"Yeah, fuck the empire."
​
The other five people round the table smiled. "Good to have you with us.", the grey-haired Mezeyejdon said. "Can we now count on your full participation in our little committee?"
​
"What do I have to do?", Hrusk asked, voice somewhat muffled by the considerable amount of éclair in his mouth.
​
"Only what we did for each other, and for you. Track down any agents sent here by alien powers, and help them realise what we realised: that it would be much better for all concerned if they reported back to their people that Earth is unsuitable for conquest."
​
"Sure, I can do that. We always meet here, right? There will be more éclairs?"
​
"My friend, from now on, there are as many éclairs as you want."
​
Hrusk paused to consider this, with the air of someone experiencing an almost religious revelation. "I'm in.", he said, with conviction.
​
"Well then, on behalf of all of us...", grey-haired alien looked round at the rest of the group, and received a round of nods, "Welcome to the Earth Preservation Society."

We both had our flings with other people, she made out with my best friend (the guy best friend) and apparently it was to make me jealous. I was jealous. I was mad. I almost stopped talking to him.
We liked each other but we're too stupid to do anything about it. She moved on. Kinda. With another guy. That guy was the gayest human being in the planet. And everyone knew, except himself. So they kinda dated for a while and I got depressed and went out drinking with my friends every weekend. Made out with a dude, woke up in a random bench, got grounded several times, though about getting revenge by stealing the guy from her although I deliberately decided I didn't like guys after that original experience, the works. I even tried dating someone else, we didn't click and she hates me now.
During this whole ordeal we stopped talking, we stopped being friends or lovers or whatever we were and I must admit it was mostly my own anger towards her. Although she did spread some rumors about me being an ass with girls, which spread like wildfire in MUN. She was mad at me because she thought I knew about her having feelings towards me and never did anything and played with her feelings. I clarify: I didn't know a thing.
She broke things up with the dude. Apparently he was talking to someone else, a friend of hers, and she got angry and dumped him on the spot. Now one of her friends kinda started playing matchmaker with us, and tried getting us together, which I liked cause all my spiraling out of control only made me like her more and more. And we flirted, snuggled, and stuff, never kissed though.
We started hitting it off until she got distant again. And the problem was the gossip on MUN had gotten around and she was in the spotlight. People called her names behind her back. Made up stuff. Typical teenager stuff. But she was hurt and turns out it was because she broke up with the guy she had been dating. Starting something with me would only make the social grave deeper, so she told me it wasn't the time. And yeah. I was mad. But didn't say anything.
We're back to being friends that sometimes talk about this whole drama, but we don't flirt anymore. It's kinda like the start. But I don't feel like at the start. When all of this began I had suppressed all my feelings for her. But now they're out. I hate her sometimes, other times I'm madly in love. And I try to text her but she keeps sending me simple answers filled with "hahah" instead of talking. I tried asking her out, not even on a date just to hang out like before, because I got her a gift form Europe. She told me a friend of hers was having her birthday and she'd tell me if she was free. With social anxiety - we have plenty of doubt and rumination and worry and inner critic and toxic shame. This appears as a devil on our shoulder - where angel on one shoulder is fighting with the criticism of the devil on the other shoulder. Devil tells us that something is wrong, it sees wrong and danger in everything - and it makes us feel sad, scared and pushes us to avoid life, to become agoraphobic and immobile - as the only way to cope with problems in life.
There are plethora of questions here. - If this devil of toxic shame and inner critic scares us into security and safety - why is it wrong? It wants good for us - it wants us to feel safe and that we have good quality life, without toxic stress, without pain, without suffering. - What exactly is good for us - and where these fears are coming from? Is our priority to be safe or to go after our goals which may entail facing rude, aggressive and demeaning people when we step outside of our comfort zone? This is called Trolley problem - where we must choose between two bad options - where the only difference is in the causalities and at what time we will pay the price. If we like junk food and prefer to enjoy in life - we will have fantastic time now. However with time - our arteries will be clogged and we might have serious medical problems like heart problems. Is more important our instant pleasure or long term health, feeling healthy in the future? - With social anxiety, our panic and fear tells us to avoid toxic people - but in real life - we cannot run and escape toxic people - eventually we will encounter them. Should our goal be to follow our fears and keep us safe - or be active in life and follow our goals - so that we learn and process reality, learn where are good people, what we like - and then create our future based on our experience - where we will avoid toxic people with time - because we know how to recognize them early on. This is where CBT is based its cure for social anxiety. CBT tells us that we must expose in order to heal social anxiety - that we will eventually desensitize ourselves and that we will learn what we like, and how to handle toxic people - with time, when we observe other people how they handle jerks. In reality - we might live in shame culture country - where observation of others leads to more anxiety and stress and where most people use dysfunctional coping mechanisms - so we get worse by exposing ourselves to toxic ambient.
This is why I see Looking-Glass Self as the priority to learn for anyone struggling with social anxiety. Broken Looking-Glass self tells us that we allow toxic people to form bad opinion about us, that we allow them to keep their wrong definitions about us in their mind. Just allow it. This does not mean taking any action regarding fawning to toxic people. We simply allow our brain, our common sense to guide us - once we allowed toxic people to hate us and to base their hatred on their own decisions how they label us in their minds. When we repair Broken Looking-Glass Self - we will have clear out the inner GPS to guide us - where we will learn from our experience. Social anxiety does not have solution in the form of removing panic and worry pain that toxic people cause us. Our sense of who we are emerges from our social interactions with others. Through our everyday interactions society reflects back to us our own image, the looking-glass self. But how much of that self-image is what others actually think and how much is what we think they think? Our interactions with others can affect our self concept. There's usually a different version of ourself that we present to people in our lives based on the relationship that we have with them. Therefore they see entirely different version of us in their own mind. Basically when we allow people to believe whatever they choose about us, no matter how much painful, wrong, distorted and unfair it is - when we relax our attitude towards other people who are hostile to us in the sense that their beliefs are allowed as whatever they may be - we have resolved social anxiety with amor fati.

The only difference is - that what we choose how to act, what to do about any social situation - is totally our own freedom in choice. This is something that CBT and self help industry and social anxiety coaches are not allowing us - they force us to "develop social skills" even though empathy is excellent and rare social skill, fading in modern world, and they force us to talk to strangers and to force ourselves to stay stuck in toxic ambient.

This is where Devil on the shoulder problems come in. With social anxiety - broken Looking-Glass Self - we experienced some kind of trauma in socialization - where people made us scared, feel insecure and in a state of shock when we're around judgmental, unfair biased people.
Our inner critic and toxic shame will try us to keep us safe by not taking risks and by avoiding living our life. Devil on our shoulder is like pro and con battle - where ideas, alarms, flashbacks, black scenario will pop on our head to keep us hypervigilant. In 2015 I discovered that this is also called Pure OCD, Pure O.
"Pure O stands for 'purely obsessional'. People sometimes use this phrase to describe a type of OCD where they experience distressing intrusive thoughts. But they don't have any external signs of compulsions, such as checking or washing physical things." (mind org)
I researched the cure for PureOCD - and techniques that worked for a while were ACT and Exposure - where we do exactly the very thing that our intrusive worry tells us that we must not do. It worked amazing for couple of months - until I experienced mobbing situation at job - where other person commanded me to do something I did not know how to do - and this person yelled and screamed and created hysteria. This is problem with Exposure therapy and CBT. Whom do we follow here? At one corner - we need to have job, we need to pay rent, we must be obedient and nice and kind to people. However at another corner - we need to be assertive, we need to stand up for ourselves and we need to warn and alarm people when they cross common sense boundaries - and risk getting fired and losing our income. In 2015 I did not know for Looking-Glass Self concept - even though I researched social anxiety since 1996 - no one mention this concept in any kind of resource - books, online, radio, teletext, therapy, talking to people - nobody knows about concepts from sociology that are 100 years old.
Theories of the Self
William James (1890): A person has "as many social selves as there are individuals who recognize him and carry and image of him in their minds"
Charles Cooley (1902): Views of self reflect the standpoints of significant others in our lives ("looking-glass self")
George Herbert Mead (1934): We imagine the perspectives of others and incorporate these into our self views - and that this occurs continuously as we interact with others on an ongoing, moment to moment basis.
Without Looking-Glass Self information - I worried what other person thinks about me when they are angry at me. How they imagine me being inept, stupid, dumb, abnormal, unmanly, shy.. whatever. This kept being my focus in my mind and I kept ruminating about it and I could not remove it from my head - and no PureOCD techniques helped me at all.
As I slowly learned psychology - and as I listened other people when I confided them with my fears - there is general consensus that worrying what other people think is childish and abnormal, that adults do not worry. Which only increased toxic shame, inner critic and rumination. CBT and DSM tell us that Borderline disorder is when we worry what other people think and then base our worth on other people's opinion.
Whereas sociology is teaching us - that this worry is totally normal and that our identity, self worth is based on other people - this is not sickness nor pathology.
IFS Model tells us that inner critic and toxic shame - are parts of our wounded partial identity - that we need to integrate and listen to.
No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness

Listening to, embracing, and loving parts allows them to heal and transform as much as it does for people. parts are sacred, spiritual beings and they deserve to be treated as such.
parts carry extreme beliefs and emotions in or on their “bodies” that drive the way they feel and act.
finding blended parts and helping them trust that it’s safe to unblend is a crucial part of IFS.
Problem with toxic shame and inner critic - is Golem Effect. It means that when we have inner voices that tell us that we are failure and that we are going to fail - that this will end as self-fulfilling prophecy.

So even though inner critic is wounded and traumatized part of ourselves - it is doing domino effect issues- not only making us paralyzed but also it attracts negativity and pain. Inner critic tries to save us from pain - by causing us to feel pain, and then invites more pain with self-fulfilling prophecy. Then obviously - taking risks, feeling the pain when we go outside of our comfort zone - will be met with pain - but at least we will feel good about trying and living our life to the fullest. And risk does not necessary means pain - facing our fears and living our goals can also bring us fortune and happiness.7
Leonardo Da Vinci took his misfortune and turned it into his advantage. In his time anatomy was considered lower class occupation - and he enjoyed doing it. He didn't feel like snob who is following herd mentality - but he took advantage that as person who was stigmatized as child from unmarried parents - to follow his interest without being bothered what other people will talk about him behind his backs.
I noticed that in my case inner critic and toxic shame - most of the time I am not aware that I struggle with it. I only have by-products, later on, as a clue that something is wrong - being immobile and passive and isolating myself. In the same manner toxic people are also invisible most of the time - we only feel drained and unsettled and doubtful later on, after contact with them.
I would normalize social anxiety as normal reaction to toxic people in the present, as reaction to trauma in the past - and instead I would focus on dealing and managing toxic shame and inner critic as the devil on the shoulder factor that is causing all the rumpus.
It is not social anxiety that keeps us losing our opportunities, as CBT resources state - but it is actually Devil on the shoulder: inner critic and toxic shame being internalized. Social anxiety is normal reaction to toxic people and their manipulation and intrusion and coercive control - whereas toxic shame and inner critic are using toxic people's opinions, our trauma past experiences against ourselves - as a way to protect us - by keeping us blocked and immobile, paralyzed. Instead of worrying how to please toxic people into loving us - we need to investigate and be curious about our negative bias to check what is going on - since we are being inundated with lies mixed in with the truth.

Inner critic and toxic shame appear as a pain - I imagine past pain or potential future pain - and this is enough to spiral into panic, avoidance, overstimulation and immobility. Similar to the movie Inception (2010) where certain ideas are implanted in someone's subconsciousness in order for them to come up with certain new insights and choices and decisions which are propelled and shamed and molded by the implanted idea:
"An idea is like a virus. Resilient. Highly contagious. And even the smallest seed of an idea can grow. It can grow to define or destroy you."
As I researched Complex Trauma I learned that inner critic and toxic shame are part of evolution and Darwinism - our brain is wired to protect itself and ourselves from the pain. This is mechanism that works for 300.000 years and it helped us to keep safe from predators and any kind of threat.
Toxic shame and inner critic are virus that stem from toxic people. Toxic complainers. Looking-glass self and theories of Self tells us that we form our identity via other people and how we observe others - we introject others and learn from them how to act and react in life. With ACE, ACoA, shame country ambient - we learned negative bias, to see only negative as a way to protect ourselves from the damage and the loss. Toxic people adapt this fear of pain and loss - and they project it on easy targets: children, traumatized adults and then feed on feeling powerful over scared others whom they shocked into state of trauma with micro-managing and error nitpicking and equating mistakes with the identity of person. In business world - such chronic complainers are seen as asset in patriarchy and Rat Race - because they appear as policemen who correct others into productivity with constant complaints and finding faults in others. But actually what they do is block progress - because in state of trauma, shock, shame - we become less productive and we contribute less to any organization or family of relationship. For toxic people - other people's fear is their narcissistic supply. And when we are coerced into fawning - we have perfect loop from hell - where toxic people keep trigger us into fear amygdala hijacking mode where we become obedient slaves - and then feel bad about being exploited and resentful - that ends up as toxic shame for believing we are inept and weak and cowards - which keeps on going as being passive and forming identity on this toxic shame belief. Which toxic people keep on triggering as we make mistakes - which we will make more when our cortex brain is offline due to abuse, bullying and mobbing.
Any action - can be always interpreted as bad and as mistake. As humans we are not perfect and we will always be imperfect - so toxic people, toxic complainers, professional nitpickers have easy task to find silent target and find errors all day long, all the time. Eventually bad things will happen - and toxic complainers will always place blame on the target - and we will end up believing that we are inept and worthless - since we fawn and suppress our anger - due to inner critic and toxic shame - that is suppose to help us to avoid pain - now we are stuck in loop of pain.
Toxic people are filled with bias and base rate fallacies - hence they scapegoat others based on fantasy and delusions - and when we release our anger - we can find holes in their solid walls. From their point of view - toxic people believe that they are gods. They believe that they have magical ability to actually see errors and recognize them, and they are convinces that this "ability" makes them special and superior. This gives them self-righteous attitude - and they see other people as toxic. They believe that they have full right to crush and hurt and harm and to be cruel to the others, similar to witch hunt and Spanish Inquisition. Their egocentrism doesn't allow toxic people to see big picture - and that normal and healthy people also see bad everywhere but they do not harass other people about it or make career on abusing others from the position of power. This loop must be broken.
Toxic shame and inner critic will make us perform Negative politeness tricks - and we will believe this is social anxiety. Like walking in the street and then moving ourselves aside so that other people can easily pass us by. Toxic people do not have this concern - they have Dog in the manger mentality and King of the hill mentality and Crab mentality - where life is competition and they must come on top or die. They are filled with insecurities which they hide with anti-social behavior.
Anger that we suppress - as result of ACE and ACoA conditioning - needs to be released. Healing the broken looking-glass self can help us to see conflict and arguing as performance - to talk freely and to alarm toxic people and cut them off from our lives.
Our own toxic shame / inner critic beliefs keep us hooked on toxic empathy - and we suppress the anger as the result. I would experiment with the anger - emotion that we automatically suppress. Without broken Looking-glass self - we are free to release the pressure vaults - and see what will happen when we do.
With broken looking-glass self - we try hard to appease toxic people with the hope that they will calm down and start to behave normally. They won't. They are automatic complaining machines who believe they are victims and we are the toxic ones. Our anger will prove their confirmation bias that we are toxic. With broken looking-glass self we end up blocked in protecting ourselves - with the false belief that if we are silent, immobile and if we make ourselves small and invisible and if we fawn to toxic people - that we won't be attacked and hence we won't experience so much dreaded pain and trauma. We shut up for the fear that toxic people will form unfavorable image of us in their heads. The solution is - let them. Let them believe whatever they choose.
Our inner critic and toxic shame will barrage us even when we choose healthy coping mechanisms and provide us with reasons why it doesn't work.
I believe that some modified version of Broken Looking-glass Self can be applied for toxic shame and inner critic issue, as well.
Toxic shame and inner critic - they also form bad opinion about us - and then we dance around it to correct it, and make decisions to overcompensate for the label of being wrong, inept, worthless, coward, stupid, embarrassing. I would apply Leonardo Da Vinci mentality - where we acknowledge the fear and labels and panic - and do what we need to do in spite of it. The only difference from CBT Exposure here is - that what we do, what our goals are - are aligned with our values. CBT tell us to expose to anyone and anything. I would filter this a bit - and remove toxic people and toxic ambient from our goals as much as it is possible.
