Since yesterday after returning home from work my Wi-Fi is no longer working. Some details:

1. I have an Arris Surfboard SBG10 routemodem combo. I've used this for 2+ years without issue. Just moved last month and it connected to the new service just fine. All the lights are on just fine, though the bottom one is flickering [the ((.)) one]. And yes, I tried resetting the modem/router and even changed cable outlets and tried a different cable cord.
   
2. My Wi-Fi connection is selectable on my iPhone but I do not get any service from it. Even when I'm not trying to access a new webpage on my phone's browser, I get popups saying "Cannot Verify Server Identity" from web addresses like outlook.office365.com and susi.comcast.net.
   
3. Reported an issue with Xfinity and they say there are no outages detected in my area.
   
4. My Samsung TV and HP laptop are also not connecting so I know it's not just a phone problem.
   
5. If I go into my xfinity app my modem/router is no longer listed.
   

Please help so I don't have to sit on a phone line with customer service. I saw another thread suggest my modem/router could just be at the end of its lifespan. It was a cheaper one, I definitely didn't pay more than $80 for it.
Open to any and all suggestions.

This app with the deceptively generic name Movies Play Box is probably the best app I've seen for streaming movies and TV shows on mobile. This version (v1.0.7) is the last version without ads. The app was pulled from the Play Store for obvious reasons but it's been working fine ever since. The only real drawback this app has is that it doesn't have casting functionality and it's not suited for Android TV. But if you enjoy streaming movies/shows on your Android phone, check this one out.

Each week we (u/FarragutCircle and u/fanny_bertram) will be reading 5-ish stories from Jared Shurin’s The Big Book of Cyberpunk, which includes a curated selection of cyberpunk stories written from 1950 to 2022! We’ll include synopses of the stories along with links to any legally available online versions we can find. Feel free to read along with us or just stop by and hear our thoughts about some cyberpunk stories to decide if any of them sound interesting to you.
Every once in a while, we reach out to people who have more insight, due to being fans of the author or have some additional context for the story. (Or we just tricked them into it.) So please welcome u/RuinEleint who will be sharing their thoughts on "The Yuletide Cyberpunk Yarn, or Christmas_Eve-117.DIR" by Victor Pelevin!
“Deep Eddy” by Bruce Sterling (published 1993; also available in his collection Ascendancies: The Best of Bruce Sterling)
Deep Eddy is acting as a data courier to the Cultural Critic in Düsseldorf, right as the city goes through a Wende (a sort of anarchist “Purge”).

• Farragut’s thoughts: We’ve read Sterling before in Science Fiction. Eddy is a misguided libertarian creep who won’t stop hitting on his German bodyguard and is too dumb to understand the philosophical points that the Cultural Critic is making (for that matter, I’m too dumb to understand, too). He survives his time in Germany, but has learned nothing of value for his punk attitude. What’s the point of rebelling if you don’t understand why? The naivete and creepiness were a little too much for me.
  
• fanny’s thoughts: This did not work for me. Eddy is creepy and annoying. He keeps hitting on the bodyguard and she makes it VERY clear she is only there in a professional context. Eddy also seems to generally not have any clue what he is doing. He is libertarian and against something but no one seems to know what. He doesn't even seem to know what he delivered to the Cultural Critic.
  

“The Yuletide Cyberpunk Yarn, or Christmas_Eve-117.DIR” by Victor Pelevin (1996, translated from Russian by Alex Shvartsman)
A corrupt mayor’s computer is infected by a virus that causes chaos in Russia.

• Special Guest Ruin: This was a fascinating story to read. The way the narrative segued from a discussion on poetry to a darkly comedic look at a Russian city was remarkable. The author seems to like to start or lead with a theme or themes which seem to be only tangentially related to each other such as for example the name of the computer virus, or Gerasimov and his dog. But both elements circle back into the story and are crucial to its structure. As for the content of the story itself, I amused myself by imagining the events as being a movie that blended the stylistic elements of Tarantino and Wes Anderson. So we have brutal, bloody violence in increasingly absurd settings and the way it is all described makes it easy to imagine it all taking place amidst the highly stylized sets and characters we would expect in a Wes Anderson movie. Overall, I really enjoyed this story.
  
• Farragut: We’ve read Pelevin before in Modern Fantasy. First of all, this is a fantastic title for a story, period. Second of all, I just enjoyed Pelevin’s style here (via Shvartsman’s translation), with an omniscient narrator telling us about a completely ridiculous situation. It gets a little cagey with the identity of the perpetrator and the ending, but I’m very curious as to how darkly I should read it (now that I think about it, it’s directly connected to the original, so I should read it very darkly indeed). Shvartsman’s occasional footnotes were very helpful, however, especially with the context surrounding Gerasim(ov) and Mumu.
  
• fanny: Ruin's review is so good, I am not sure what to add. The style of this story fit the elements so well. It starts with a poem whose themes carry through the story. The footnotes were a really great addition and helped contextualize. The narrator keeps upping the ridiculousness until we get to the end and everything gets wrapped up.
  

“Wonderama” by Bef (1998, translated from Spanish by the author)
Lalo (or is it Eduardo?) wakes up every day in the most awesome life in 1974, but it’s revealed to be a lie and ends tragically.

• Farragut: Bef is a Mexican SF writer, a crime writer, and a graphic novelist, and honestly his whole bibliography sounds cool as heck. Told in a series of diary entries with some small interruptions, we follow a kid whose life is like a Mexican kid’s sugar-fueled dream. The reason for its inclusion in this thematic section of the anthology becomes clear however, and I yelled, “Noooo!” at the ending. Sigh. It’s very good!
  
• fanny: I am a sucker for diary entry style stories and this was no exception. Lalo’s life seems almost perfect, but it feels so off. The story feels progressively more off until we start to question everything. Also, yelled “Nooo!” at the ending. Very good. Absolutely loved.
  

“comp.basilisk FAQ” by David Langford (1999) (link to story)
A FAQ-style story that clearly describes a bizarre future where images on the web and TV are banned due to the risk of death.

• Farragut: Langford is famous for having the most Hugo wins (29), mostly for the Fan Writer category, but also Short Story (not this one) and Best Related Work (not this one either). This is a delightful story that made me think of it as a precursor to qntm’s later story “Lena” from Week 5 (though obviously only in general form). Apparently I love the faux-nonfiction style where some of the horror and plot is between the lines. The final FAQ about Microsoft was darkly funny.
  
• fanny: This was fun and very short. The FAQs related to basilisk and writing were great. It goes between funny, dark humor, and just dark. I liked the commentary on technology and software. I also really appreciate the standard response answers explaining they should post someone else. This is something I deal with often and this was great.
  

“Spider's Nest” by Myra Çakan (2004, translated from German by Jim Young; also available in the anthology The Apex Book of World SF 3 edited by Lavie Tidhar)
Spider, uh, does something? Is looking for drugs, maybe? But something else happens instead?

• Farragut: Çakan is a German writer from Hamburg, and after reading this story, I’d say Shurin made hamburger out of me, too. The main thing I got out of this story was that Spider really wanted something, maybe. I thought it was drugs, but he got angry at his dealer and then got super weird with his friend’s girlfriend? And then there was a Silver Spider, who wasn’t him, but maybe he plugged himself in to replace her? What is happening?
  
• fanny: Spider definitely wanted drugs from his dealer, Ant. I think. Ant got annoyed at something then Spider got into a voyeur situation (maybe). There is a Silver Spider in his dreams that makes him feel better. I couldn't tell if this was dream or drug induced or technology induced. The end is super weird and makes even less sense than the story. Spider might have done a murder on himself? I have been confused before in this anthology, but not to this level.

I'm running a dockerized Jellyfin media server on my Ubuntu Desktop, which I'm using as a home server. The server worked fine for about a year, up until 2 weeks ago.
Now, the server crashes randomly while streaming media.
The screen goes black, and the server becomes unreachable. I have to physically unplug the power cable to restart it. The issue persists regardless of whether the media is stored on an external hard drive or internal SSD.
Upgrading from Ubuntu 22.04 LTS to 24.04 LTS did not resolve the issue. I have performed a CPU stress test without crashes, so I don't think it's a CPU issue, as in the PC overheating during transcoding.
The Ubuntu GUI app `Logs` shows these important logs right before/during the crash:

Hello,
I'd like some fair exchange for those, i'm willing to put more than one game against a game i really want, depends on the offer. I could accept Paypal, but that's not my goal (just getting games i'd like to play). I might want to keep something in those lists, i also have some other Humble and Fanatical games i'm not sure i'll play, so they might appear one day (could be money for an exchange if you have something from my wishlist, don't hesitate to ask). Zdravo, zabušavam na šihti in sm reku, da na svetlo dam tole besedilce.
Na sloredditu se je v zadnjih dveh dnev pojavilo več objav o SOS, ki so izhajale iz članka, objavljenega na spletni strani 24ur. [1] O tem so poročali tudi drugi mediji,* med njimi N1 [2], Svet24 [3], Delo [4]... TLDR članka 24ur, za tiste, ki ga niste še prebrali je: Skupina znana pod imenom SOS, je na svojem instagram profilu objavila svoje poglede na remigracijo in domnveno na drevo privezala nekega migranta ter ga povila v plastično folijo. SOS si je za svoj cilj postavila "očiščenje Slovenije vseh tujcev." Objava SOS in njihova dejanja naj bi bila odgovor na posilstvo 27-letnice, katerega so domnevno zakrivili trije migranti. Sodeč po zapisu Tomica Šuljića za Delo, naj se to posilstvo ne bi zgodilo. Sodeč po besedah TŠ naj policija ne bi imela o tem nikakršnih informacij. A to drži? Težko reči. Od kod torej ta zgodba? Portal mojadolenjska [5] in PlanetTV [6] sta ugotovila, da je bila SP o tem zagotovo obveščena. Razlika med obema poročanjema leži v tem, da je PlanetTV zapisal pod objavljenim videom, da policija tega ne obravnava kot posilstva. Oba vira se strinjata v tem, da naj bi to posilstvo, o katerem je zelo malo informacij, dejansko zakrivili "trije temnopolti moški," ki so 27-letnico, pretepli do nezavesti in jo nato trikrat posilili. SP je v poročilu za PlanetTV zanikala možnost o vpletenosti tujcev, ker o tem domnevno ni bilo podatkov.
Glede na zgoraj zapisano, bi se lahko reklo, da imamo sedaj zmešnjavo informacij. Veliko virov o SOS in posilstvu 27-letnice poroča povsem drugače. Na prvi strani Googla o posilstvu ni skorajda ničesar. Sam mislim, da je bilo dejanje SOS uperjeno predvsem proti občutkom nemoči kot migrantom. Ta nemoč, ki se je razvila v čustveno travmo, na podlagi tega, da SP tega primera ni obravnavala kot posilstvo. Ta nemoč je najverjetneje poglavitno vplivala na dejanja, ki so jih izvedli v videu na njihovi instagram strani. O tem občutku nemoči je poročal tudi zurnal24, in v članku so na portalu poudarili, da je nezaupanje v institucije tisto, kar SOS najbolj skrbi. [7] To je trend, ki se ga Zahod že dolgo zaveda. Prav o tem je European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions leta 2022 izdal poročilo. [8] Če to hočemo, ali nočemo priznati, je Slovenska policija zagotovo eden izmed institucionalnih stebrov državnega aparata, ki javnosti daje občutek varnosti. V kolikor se zaupanje poruši, lahko seveda začenmo pričakovati, da bo varnost ljudstvo/narod vzel(o) v svoje roke. SOS so posledica prav tega. Manj je razlog sovraštvo, kot pa strah pred izgubo varnosti. "Vojna blaznost" se ustvari ob določenih pogojih. Tudi SOS je primer te blaznosti, ker racionalni in pravni posegi izgubljajo moč, oziroma veljavo. Policija, ki nas ščiti v javnosti in na domu, svojega dela ne opravlja več, sepravi kdo ga bo?
Odziv slovenia je bil kot pričakovan. Opazili smo lahko predvsem mešanico sovraštva in humorja, pa vendar je bilo med komentarji pod objavami nekaj docela razumevajočih glasov, ki so pred postanjem premislili o dejanski situaciji. Slovenci in Slovenke sedaj potrebujemo treznost in mirno roko. V kolikor se sovraštvo stopnjuje, iz kateregakoli razloga in proti komur koli, bomo pred koncem desetletja vsi trpeli; prav nič ne bo pomembno ali smo Slovenci ali tujci, ali vladniki, ali reveži, ali levi ali desni. Zagotovo se bo našel politični sistem, ki bo katerokoli od naštetih skupin znal označiti za "sovražnika ljudstva" in nanj poskušal pripeti krivdo za zadnjo muho v popoldanskem pivu. Od tu pa do gulagov je pot odvisna zgolj od birokratskega in pravnega manipuliranja (bodočih) despotov, za ketere vemo, da so v tem brez vsake primere.
Zagotovo bi se našel tudi kakšen redditor, ki je študiral bodisi sociologijo, bodisi filozofijo in bi znal pravilneje opredeliti razliko med domnvevnim sovraštvom in anskioznostjo - strahom. Sam mislim, da bi bilo na tem mestu ta dejanja pravilneje obravnavati kot posledica jeze, na mestu sovraštva. Slednje je vsekakor preveč širok pojem. Vsakdo v življenju sovraži nekoga. Za Slovence je tipično, da se s sosedom ne maramo, ker je njegov avto za 3cm večji od našega. Mar ti občutki vodijo v ustanovitev protisosedske varde? Ne. Jeza pa je povsem drugačno čustvo, ki je globlje in bolj prodorno. Jeza se sama po sebi ne pojavi in ima tako kot druga čustvena stanja svoj izvor. Tega pa bi sam iskal v "nemoči", negotovosti in strahu, ki zagotovo prevevajo ume teh mladih moških. Mar jih to opravičuje? Ne. Ali analiza opravičuje naša dejanja, ki so zgolj pogovorna? Tudi ne. Trezni ljudje bi se morali postaviti po robu takšnim ekstremizmom, vendar ne s sulico, temveč z razumevanjem. Težko je, vsi vemo, da je težko, vendar ti fantje potrebujejo razumevanje bolj kot policijo. Preprost pogovor bi verjetno rešil več; pregon in zapiranje pa jih bo za vedno utrdil v svojih prepričanjih. Pametnejši med njimi se bo v zaporu, prosim Bog ne daj, zagotovo lotil pisanja kakšne propagandne knjige.
Pred koncem bi ponovil tisto, kar sem napisal že zgoraj. Pri obravnavi takšnih (ekstremističnih) skupin ni problem v tem, da se občasno pretepajo z drugimi gostilniškimi [pikado] ekipami, temveč v temu, da se njihovo obnašanje in vedenje lahko zlahka imitira. Tu odstopi pomen diferenciacije politične ideologije, kar naredi stvar še toliko bolj nevarno. Poleg tega pa je samo vprašanje časa, v kolikor se zadeve s prekomerno migracijo ne reši, da se pojavi še 4, 5, 6 itd. takšnih "SOS" skupin. Te so zaenkrat slabo organizirane, nimajo centrale, nimajo "velikega vodje", so brez sredstev, brez oglaševanja (izjema je njihov instagram profil [9], ki ima sicer znatno število sledilcev, v tem trenutku ob 12:19, na dan 21. maja 2024, 4225. Profil ima samo eno objavo, tako da je dokaj neaktiven.). Problem, ki ga jaz vidim je, da v kolikor demokratične stranke, katerekoli, progresivne ali konzervativne, ne rešijo problema migracije in drugih težav, ki so povezane z vzponom ekstremističnih skupin, bo prej ali slej njihov vzpon opazil nekdo, ki je politično sposoben in inteligenten ter se lotil organizacijskega dela. Takrat se prestopi prag, ki nosi strahotne posledice. Zgodovina 20. stoletja naj nam bo učiteljica. Obup, nemoč, ponižanje in strah so pripeljali tako do taborišč kot gulagov. Posledice takšnih razmišljanj, naj si bodo še tako "smešne" so resnične in povzročajo trpljenje med ljudmi, ki se že tako ali tako danes težko prebijajo iz dneva v dan. Ali res potrebujemo razmišljati še o rdeče-belih, ki po ulicah strašijo v vojaških oblačilih in vsakega, ki ni znjimi označijo za sovražnika?
Odgovor na esktremizem je v večini primerov ekstremizem druge barve.

EDIT 1: Slovnica. Katastrofa.

I set up a net outside and bought a launch monitor. My plan was just to set up an iPad out there or a little tv to cast to for video. If I wanted to go the full backdrop white screen sim that you hit into, is the only option an outdoor projector, since I really have no place to put one unless it can sit on the ground? Or do they sell white screens that can be hit into and also be cast to directly from an iPad to skip the projector?

Since the viewing figures for Space Babies and The Devil's Chord released yesterday, I've seen a lot of people freaking out that neither episode made it much over 4 million viewers. Given that these numbers are around about what they were in 1989 when the show was cancelled, it seems many people think that the end is nigh, and RTD's relaunch has been a total failure.
This is however missing a lot of context. For starters, when the show was cancelled at the end of the 1980s there were only 4 channels. Home recording hardware was available, but extremely expensive and usually unaffordable for the majority of people. If you wanted to watch a show, you had to watch it live. 4 million in 1989 is in no way the same as it is in 2024.
Even since the show returned in 2005 the landscape has changed dramatically. Catchup and streaming services didn't exist yet. The digital switchover hadn't happened yet, meaning a large amount of people still only had 5 channels. Those that did have digitial TV were likely on freeview, which at most had about 50-60 channels. Today, we have thousands of channels on multiple digital media services, and thats not to mention the dozens of streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime, Disney+, and NOW that further divide the audience. We are never getting back the days where an episode can regularly reach 10m viewers. Comparing Series 14 viewing figures to Series 4 ones is utterly worthless.
So, how do we measure the health of the show compared to its own past?
Simple! We use the weekly rankings for the episodes, rather than the viewership numbers themselves. This is how music charts are compiled and no one has any issues with that system. Its also the only way to consistently measure the viewership, while still accounting for the change in viewing habits over the last 20 years.
I've seen a lot of people state that the show is as healthy as its ever been just like I am now, but without the numbers to back it up. Well, I've decided to bring those numbers.
I've compiled a spreadsheet of the weekly placing for every single episode back to 1963 taken from their first transmission date. This was done using figures from Doctor Who Guide, which is an excellent resource. The figures from the iPlayer age are compiled using their 7 day rating, which includes everyone who watched it within a week of transmission, as is standard procedure these days.
You can find my spreadsheet here. It's broken down by classic and revival eras, by each Doctor, and by each revival showrunner, but the graph on the first page is the entire history of the show.
So, what can we tell from these figures?

• Only five episodes have been the number 1 most watched show of their week: Journey's End, The End of Time Part I, The End of Time Part II, The Day of the Doctor, and The Woman Who Fell To Earth.
• The classic show had two golden ages of viewership: under Hartnell in 1964-1965, and under Tom Baker in 1975-1977.
• Troughton and Pertwee's castings saved the show. Both arrested accellerating drops in the rankings, with Pertwee's ranks actually increasing towards his end.
• The true nadir of the show's popularity was not at its cancellation under Sylvester McCoy, but Tom Baker's final season. Averaging at 106th for any given week that it was on, it reached its absolute lowest point during episode 2 of Full Circle, when it only achieved 170th.
• After initially recovering to the norm under Peter Davison, a steady decline began towards the end of his run, which continued into the eras of his two successors and culminated in the shows cancellation.
• The final time that the classic show appeared in the Top 20 for the week was episode 5 of The Talons of Weng-Chiang, hitting 18th on the 26th March 1977. This means it continued running for twelve years achieving rankings that the revival has consistently outperformed.
• The lowest that the revival has ever dropped is 35th. This was for Can You Hear Me? on the 9th February 2020.
• Only two episodes in the RTD1 era fell out of the Top 20. Bizzarely, they were The Empty Child (21st) and Silence in the Library (27th).
• The run from Midnight to The End of Time is unprecedented in the history of the show. Achieving rankings of 5th, 4th, 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 5th, 5th, 1st, and 1st - nothing else comes close to this level of success.
• The decline in the revival seems to begin just after the 50th anniversary. Some might put this down to Capaldi being too abrasive in Series 8, but its also possible that a lot of the general audience saw the 50th as a natural conclusion and gave up (a bit like what happened to the MCU after Endgame).
• Chibnall's era of the revival is the least consistent. The first half of Series 11 never left the Top 10 and he finished strongly with Power of the Doctor (5th), but only eight episodes out of his last 20 as showrunner made the Top 20.
• So far, RTD2 is on par with the majority of RTD1, the runup to the 50th, and the first half of Series 11.

I love this show, and its saddening to see other people who love it scared for its future because scaremongers in the press (and sometimes from within the fandom itself) are willfully ignorant of the fact that things have changed so dramatically that we cannot measure them the same way that we used to.
Anyway, I hope you like my spreadsheet. Although I made it for my own enjoyment (yes I am very fun at parties) I thought it might be helpful to share.
