I hope this will be pinned as I want to provide a upto-date full-scope info dump on critical things that have changed over the last few years that people binging YT videos and old threads will be out of the loop on.
The Decode Wiki has a massive amount of information thats proacticly updated and mantained, so here is just a more camcorder format biased summary of a lot info there.

Rule 1

There is a thing called SAVE or LOCK tap on tapes, enable it on all your tapes before playing with them, this will save your ass from careless or just mistakes and stop your from erasing your tapes.

Cleaning & Service

Please do not treat mechnical kit like magic, it requires care and maintaince like a car or a rifle it has a lot of parts that need cleaning and oiling once and awhile or outright replacing like belts and capston rubber wheels.
Paper & 99.9% IPA never 60% etc (water + elecronics just no.) for VHS & Beta head cleaning.
Chamois Sticks (overpriced waste for all but camcorders) for small head cleaning.
Brush, Airblower, Super-Lube, Sowing Machine oil - Genreal cleaning & service.
Lens cleaning should always be with microfibeswabs to clean rims, UV Filters are your dust/shatter protection friends caps are also adviced during sunlight use!

PAL & NTSC

We are not all united in this world of standards per region, never forget the diffrances it can cost you time and suffering.
PAL 625-line (25fps 50 fields "25i") is Europe/Middle East to Russia 50hz grids
NTSC 525-line (29.97fps 59.94 fields "29.97i") is USA/Canada/Japan 60hz grids
Digital active area is 720x576i PAL and NTSC is 720x480i or 488
(there is also 608/512 height called IMX standard for preserving the VBI area both are in analog world sampled at 4fsc or 1135x625 PAL & 910x525 NTSC but only vhs/ld/cvbs-decode provide acesss to the full signal frame.)
NTSC-N/PAL-M/NTSC-50/PAL60 etc (South America and outhers who could not just stick to one unifyed system or slowly migrated with existing kit)
Recorded Media only has 3 flavors in common world use, NTSC/PAL then the french have SECAM or MESECAM for recorded tapes before moving to PAL.
Digital you will use and or encouter i.e 2000s era will only be NTSC/PAL (then flavors of HD in interlaced or progressive 25/24/29.97p) to keep things simple.
PAL decks (most 90's & 2000's decks) will play most MESECAM tapes, will play NTSC tapes also but the standard video output will have 4.43Mhz instead of 3.35Mhz colour subcarrier so NTSC native kit will not like it, such as Time Base correctors or NTSC CRT TVs so you will get B/W video out of a lot of PAL kit with native NTSC support too or it will be just PAL converted by a PAL DMR-ES10 for example.
The decks however are reading full NTSC or MESECAM signal off the tape so the video boards internally are converting the signal, but with direct RF capture will get you a native capture to work with and preserve analog tapes.

Digital Tapes

Massive Guide Here with full scope breakdown
Do NOT HOT PLUG, FireWire is 12v turn kit off hook up cable turn it back on, unless its a adapter from TB2 to TB3 to FW800 with low power data only then its most likey a full spec port with 12v 5A that can kill kit if ports are not clean and you hot plug it.
MiniDV/HDV/Digital8 FireWire Camcorders fall under
StarTech and 101 china brands make cards, I like DVgrab on Linux, but WinDV still works for most Windows Boxes & Final Cut still works on MacOS.

Digital Pro Tapes

HDCam / HDCam SR / DVCProHD / DigiBeta (digital betacam) / MPEG IMX etc
Some decks like DVC do have FireWire but HDcam and Digibeta flavors are all SDI
HDCam falls under SDI - Digital to V210 or FFV1 4:2:2
This applys to decks and camcorders you will be using SDI most likey but some had HDMI 8-bit 4:2:2 output like later HDV camcorders did.

Analog Tapes

VHS-C/SVHS-C/BetaMax/Betacam/Video8/Hi8
SVHS may have VITC timecode in VBI space, Hi8 can have PCM digital audio if shot with pro kit and RCTC data like time and date code on pro and prosumer models.
The best possible method for preserving tapes in the 21st century for analog Video and HiFi signals is The FM RF Archival Method then decoding it to S-Video/Composite in software then chroma-decoding it to YUV digital data all in software, no hardware TBC or this capture card is better then that capture card nightmare or limted codec support, it cuts through the noise (littorally) and plight of inflated hardware markets, VHS-Decode gives you a alternative for all analog tape formats dispite its name.
This is direct sampling of the orignal signals as the deck reads the tapes before its internal processing, this is the most affordable and technologically high quality preservation workflow that anyone can use today, cost of entry is sub 100USD and virtually all decks have test points. (but later decks will not have easy HiFi test points so 90s decks with a good cleaning first are your go to.)
You may even already own a CXADC compatible Hauppauge/WinTV or outher brand of capture card with CX chips the driver can use.
Sony 8mm or Hi8/Video8 and Digital8 with backwards playback support have test jigs that are plug and play for test points.
The older more well known method is deck with S-Video Time Base Corrector "TBC" ADC/Capture Card or a capture card with a TBC, this will cost you 2-20x the cost of a FM RF archival workflow thats with a basic office PC out of the skip basically added to the shopping list.

Making a Camcorder tapeless

Analog - S-Video/CVBS or Compoosite (Yellow RCA or 4-Pin Din for S-Video)
Digital - HDMI (but only HDV MiniDV camcorders had this so S-Video would be the best output in 16:9 squesse mode this applys to Digital8)
Cheep Analog SDI coverters off eBay using a 12v to USB-PD adapter will be the most powerful plug and play clean signal converting kit you can put into a Molle belt pouch or backpack with PD power adapters.
SDI is just HDMI with some more specs and piped over Coax cable orignally it replaced all the Coax copper lines that ran Composite or CVBS in studios and now its good solid locking interface for A/V world using the BNC connector from the 1940s and HDMI converters are a dime a dozen for SDI.
Digital8/MiniDV you can buy little off shelf USB adapters, but for later prosumer kit with NPF mount etc just buy a new 18650 cell based chinese battery they last all day long.
Recorders, Atmos, Blackmagic are your 2 go to brands today, but if you have a laptop just get a Magewell or GV-USB2 based setup and encode with VirtualDub2 or OBS if you like crunching stuff with realtime de-interlacing (its terrible for recorded media never should do it, but for live feeds you can get away with it in most cases as long as your system can keep up and use a codec like ProRes LT)

Power & Power Adapting

You can use 9v with stepdown or 5v with step up to power the 6-7.1v to 7.1 to 8.5v voltage range of camcorders, common batterys today are NPF, BP, V-Mount or Gold Mount with ARRI B-Mount slowing getting adaoption, but USB-PD or 20v 3A PD65W and 20v 5a PD100W power banks are now very cheep and provide more then enough to power most field portable kit.

Codecs & Containers & Chroma Sampling & Bit-Depth

Codecs and Cotainers is fun, but MP4/MOV is banned for archival, you will lose files, they break if the recording/encoding fails midway, do not trust them to store your audio and video memorys forever.
MKV/MXF are the only containers you should keep masters in if not DV/AVI at worst for HD and SD media today very much so if you have a home server with Jellyfin for example header dependent containers like MP4/MOV are poor for streaming locally and over the the internet on demand headderless don't care and are very relisaint if currupton happens you lose frames/seconds not your whole file.
(Note: you can easily re-mux a file from these safe containers for use on outher devices that require avi or mp4 etc its just a wrapper to hold the data, its easy to convert between the two without loss)
Codecs range from lossy compressed like AVC/H264 or HEVC/H265 (in MP4/MOV etc) to Lossy DV25 used for MiniDV/Digital8, to visually lossles like ProRes HQ, and the V210 for uncompressed and FFV1 today for lossless compressed.
Chroma Sub-Sampling is how much colour range data is stored per pixel, 4:2:2 is enough to use green screens and preserve the full range of live from camara Composite NTSC or PAL, ware as 4:4:4 is the same for HD era kit in very lay terms here but this is only for master recordings and for digitisaion.
Bit-Depth is simple 8-bit 256 range 10-bit 1024 range of colour, you want 10-bit almost always for inital capture in digital HD era and in Analog SD archival but can drop it to 8-bit 4:2:0 with careful encoding after the fact many videos on this that are clear and demo this.
For example though in this community DV is 4:1:1 NTSC and 4:2:0 in PAL so if using a Digital8 camcorder to ingest tapes from Video8/Hi8 your not saving the full range of colour and also using a lossy compressed codec at 25-30mbps great for 1995 but for 45-50mbps you can use lossless compressed FFV1 8-bit 4:2:2.

Deinterlacing

101 ways hardware and software converters, personally if your camcorder does not have a progressive or progressive pulldown mode, shoot in interlaced, use Hybird or StaxRip with the QTGMC filter via Vapoursynth or Avisynth its 3-5 clicks today and some copy paste at worst, dont use BDWIF or YADIF if you can help it, and always bare in mind lossy compressed interlaced footage will almost always have artifacts to fight with.
All Analog media in consumeprosumer world is interlaced and should be delt with in post for recorded media.

Final Notes

This is a fun subject that without basic EE/Cine/ENG world info being ingrained into your mind, its not very well condenced for people to get into without making massive mistakes or just ones that are sad to see due to lack of ah heres a nice list of key points to go and google and look into or sticky note on the kit.

2024.04.22 06:30 frank26080115 V-reg overvoltage protection that latches off until pwr reset vs instant recovery?

I just returned from competing in RoboGames, and mainly hung around the insect classes (smaller robots than the battlebots on TV). A reoccuring problem is experience by multiple competitors: Robots that use 4S (around 16V) and brushed motors are shutting down in the middle of a match and then not recovering until the robot is completely turned off.
Suspected cause is when motors are reversed or the robot impacts something that causes a motor to reverse, a voltage spike occurs.
Adding more capacitors does help but not completely mitigate the problem in some cases. And the sizes of capacitors we are trying to add are getting a bit too big for the small weight-restricted robot chassis,
Some investigating points me to the voltage regulator going into some form of overvoltage protection, but not recovering when the voltage goes back into the expected range.
Questions:
  1. voltage regulators with protection that latches the regulator output completely off, and stays that way until a full power down, those exist, right? I'm not just pulling that out of my ass?
  2. is there any way to easily distinguish between v-regs that latches off vs recover ASAP? I would like to shop for replacements on Digi-Key

Alright, now that's out of the way. First of all, I'm gonna say that English is not my first language, so excuse me for the errors. Second of all, I'm just here because I needed a place to let go of my bottled up feelings that I've been holding for so long. This'll be a long one, so bear with me (if you decided to stick around, that is)
Currently, I have a rather awkward and tensed up relationship with my parents, and it all started since the 2020 lockdown. I had a lot of "disagreements" with them back in my teen days. I tried to express and tell them because some things they did were pretty absurd. It all started with me telling them to get a Wifi router for the house because the mobile data just can't keep up with the connection we needed. My parents are both teachers, and they also needed the internet, but they kept on complaining about the connectivity without even trying to solve the problem. "Just wait for a bit, and it'll finish up". Like hell it would be while you're keying in those datas, dad.
It was around mid 2021 during the lockdown when the outburst finally happened. I was in my final year of highschool, and my country had lockdowns twice (one in 2020 and the other in 2021). I had to experience my senior years at home with sluggish internet and skipping classes. Did I also mention that my household doesn't have any sort of astro or TV? Yes. That too. I used a free YES phone at the time 1gb ram, 8gb rom, goodluck using that to join google meet. My internet provider was Umobile which was bad at the time, and my dad did give me a Digi sim card, but it's the bare minimum of an effort. If I had to guess the prepaid plan at the time, it was the generic NEXT20 plan, which gave you unlimited social and 15gb of internet for a month. It was still not sufficient enough, and I had to sneak into my dad's phone to use his hotspot whenever I had the chance. It was that bad. So you can already imagine the pain I had to face during that lockdown phase, and coupled with my teachers kept on asking me why I'm not joining online classes, I had enough of it.
I broke down on that one particular night, I smashed the indoor cloth rack and snapped some of the rods in half. I raged to the kitchen and smashed the rice cooker to the floor, leaving dents and cracks on the tiles. The rice cooker is "cooked" of course. It was total chaos, and my dad dragged me out of the kitchen, slapping me multiple times. He said, "Wtf is wrong with you, do you really hate living here so much?" I responded without any filters and here's the gist of it, "You bet I fucking hate it here. No fucking TV or entertainment, you don't even support me with a proper sim card setup, my phone is a fucking YES 4G free phone, and I've been skipping classes for the past 5 fucking months. If you're gonna waste your first son because of your fucking ignorance, then so be it!" I broke down at the front door right then and there, and after only 20 minutes, my mom came to console me.
They realized something was wrong with me, and they had the audacity to send me to a counselor. I changed for the worse. If you want that typical emo boy, well there you have it. I was fed up with trying to let people understand my struggle, and so I stopped telling them. I didn't even confront the counselor because I was too scared to be judged. Knowing he's the same age as my parents, they would probably just say "you're mad because of the lack of internet. That's all". Of course I am. I need it for my education, dumbasses. School's down, so I need to join online classes, bastard. But I kept it to myself. I know it was a dumb reason for me to get so worked up, but I think my anger was justified after one whole year being disconnected. The lockdown period was 7 months and 5 months respectively throughout 2020 and 2021, so that makes about 12 months. After all of that, my dad finally decided to put up a Wifi plan, but it's a little bit too late for that, because school was starting like one and a half months away.
I went back to school with a fresh start, and thankfully with supportive friends and teachers, I clutched for the remaining 5 months. I realized if I don't change now, I'm doomed. No one's gonna help me, not even my parents (as they demonstrated to me a while back), so I strived. Fast forward, and I got 7A's out of 9. I confessed to a girl by the end of school (nothing much, just confessed and that's all).It was my final best, and I'm happy with it. I'm bad at science too, so it's all good. Now, I settled myself at a teacher's institute, and my carrier is set in stone. I became overly independent, and my parents felt guilty ever since.
They changed my way of thinking, and it was as if I didn't need them anymore. Yeah, some parts I do need them, but for the most part, nahh, I'm good at surviving on my own. I have my ways. The incident made my parents scared to ask for any of my necessities, so they straight up gave me even when I didn't ask for it. To be honest, I felt bad too, but I guess they learned their lesson.
What bugs me about this incident was the fact that they didn't listen to my concerns and had the audacity to send me to a counselor, as if mocking me for being emotionally unstable. I hate saying this, but they failed from giving me the comfort I need. I know the lockdown was a tough time for everyone, but they failed to make me realize that a family is the safe haven for depressed person. I lost my trust in them, I never talked to them whenever I'm having problems, because I'm scared if the same thing happened again -- didn't listen and didn't care. Right now, as I am typing, I'm cuddling to my 12 year old steering wheel sized turtle plushie, which has been my safe haven for all these tough years. I became so overly attached to this little fella, and I know it's not healthy, but I can't help it. It's all I have...
Up until now, my relationship with them is awkward and uncertain, and I don't know how to resolve this issue. I would like for it to be solved, but we've grown so distant, to the point that we're comfortable with this. I know it's bad but, it is what it is. I got a free Toshiba 20AF44 today but it doesn't have a remote. I have a 27A45 with the CT-852 remote. The remote works with that TV but not the 20AF44. Does anyone know if this remote should be compatible with that TV? I may be mistaken but I thought Toshiba remotes have high compatibility at least for basic functions.
Edit: Just in case anyone sees this I was able to resolve the issue. I purchased a TSOP93438 sensor from digi-key (link below). My dad helped me remove the old sensor and install this one. Star Wars (Ahsoka Edit) Episode VIII: Heir to the Empire

When I first watched Ahsoka, I thought it captured two things from the original trilogy really well: How the OT gave scenes breathing room, and the sense of fun. With that in mind, I set out to edit the series into a glimpse at what an alternative sequel trilogy may have been. Intended on being preceded by an Episode 7 built primarily off of The Mandalorian(an edit which I haven't started yet), this edit opens with an impressive Star Destroyet flyover found on Youtube, glimpses of the finale of Star Wars: Rebels interspersed with select scenes from The Mandalorian, alongside Ezra's voice-over, to give viewers the context needed for the feature.
I gave myself these requirements:
  1. We need the tiny freaky aliens. It isn't Star Wars without them.
  2. We need a runtime of under 2 hours, 30 minutes, but over 2 hours.
  3. The pacing should stay intact.
  4. We need something to explain why we're not following the original trio, since we're so close to the end of the OT, and watching Rebels can't be a prerequisite.
  5. The only resources I can grab from animated series such as Rebels are scenes that could assumed as CGI - so basically, ships only, no characters.
In this version, there are a few key changes:
I devised a new end Credits sequence reminiscent of prior movies, using Cinecred.
Special thanks to DigiModification for creating the Opening Crawl generator used for this edit.
Finally, I have to emphasize: Quality-wise, This is a draft. Currently I don't have subtitles added in, and the sound mixing still needs work. I'd like to cut down a bit more of it, as well. I don't have an ETA for finishing it up, as I've got a pretty busy year ahead of me, but anyone is welcome to use what I'm putting down, either directly or as an idea on where to start.

History: Giochi Preziosi an Italian toy company. Founded in 1978 by Enrico Preziosi the company produces toys and TV series based on their toys. The company started dabbling in video games with the release of the digiBLAST in 2005 as some of the Intellectual Properties of company were ported to the device. After this incursion in the gaming world, Giochi Preziosi had the idea of releasing their own handheld console. The idea of My Life came from the success story of Second Life, a virtual game that had reached a population of 6,000,000 virtual citizens by 2007. The company built on that idea to create a handheld aimed for girls.
Release: Released in Italia in 2007, the My Life was a huge success for Giochi Preziosi. The handheld revolved around the creation of your own avatar which would then be the centrepiece of the device. The handheld feature a virtual world, a varieties of built in mini games, tamagotchi-like responsibilities, dressing room, etc. With the built-in infrared communication port, two handhelds could exchange messages (up to 3 feet of distance) and even share accessories. The handheld was built to be expandable with the uses of “Magic Keys”. Each key would unlock either accessories or fashion item within the handheld. Three expansion cartridges were also released which includes additional mini games, places, fashion and characters. The expansion cartridges would also have their own unique mini key that would unlock even more digital assets. Giochi Preziosi was even able to partner with Disney to release a Hannah Montana expansion cartridge. The console was even bundled with this cartridge for a while.
Following the success of the Italian release, Giochi Preziosi released the console in many locations in Europe including : Italia, UK, France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Greek and Denmark. The console was also released under license in other countries, such as the United States in 2008 where it was distributed by Playmate.
The company marketed the console as “the first virtual console designed entirely for women“. This claim was in fact false, as other consoles were designed for girls before, including the Super Lady Cassette Vision, the Casio Loopy and the Paluseata.
The console had a few shortcomings, especially related to the lack of a keyboard. Writing anything on the handheld is cumbersome and time-consuming, making the ability to send text messages really unappealing.
Demise: The console did overall pretty well, selling over a million units. The console continued to be supported until 2010 when it was replaced in 2010 by a new handheld console called My Real Life. The new console was basically an updated version of My Life with the notable difference of an inclusion of an MP3 player and digital camera.     • There’s a new recommendation system! If you haven’t chosen a Temtem yet and are starting from zero, the system will show you the Tems that have the most overall success; once you pick a Temtem, it will show you the possible partners that have a great affinity with your in-progress team.

Improvements

  • We’ve made a lot of changes to Dojo Wars! Welcome to Dojo Wars v2:
    • Dojo Wars will now happen only once per month, on the week that contains the last Sunday of that month.
      • The period when clubs can subscribe to a Dojo War is one week instead one day. It’ll be the whole week before Dojo Wars commence.
      • 👥Dojo Wars finals will now require 9 players instead of 11 players.
      • 👥Players will now earn individual rewards, on top of Club rewards, for each match won during any given Dojo War. The further they progress into a Dojo War, the better their individual rewards will be. These rewards include Feathers, Hotfixes, ETCs or even Novas.
      • 👥The Dojo War system will now prioritize not matching two people again if they’ve just battled each other, even over the fact that they have the same amount of wins/losses.
      • Clubs will be penalized if they sign up for a Dojo War but don’t attend it. Pansuns will be deducted from their Club Vault, with the possibility of going into the negative. Clubs with a negative Pansun sum in their Vault cannot sign up for Dojo Wars.
      • 👥The previous King of the Hill system that allowed current regents to only fight in the finals has been discarded. Regents will have to fight for the Dojo again from 0, like everyone else.
      • 👥Instead of having a set schedule for each round, rounds will now start 5 minutes after the previous round’s last match ended. This will make the pace of DW quicker.
      • 👥There will now be a Squad lock. It’s currently not working correctly due to a bug, but it’s in place all the same. The team you choose for the first match of a round will be the Squad you use for the entire duration of that round. There is a chance that you might be prompted to select a Squad after the first round, but regardless of which Squad you pick at this point, you will continue to use the Squad you locked in at the beginning of that round.

  • We’ve also made a lot of changes to the Premium Store:
    • The Premium Store will now have two featured items instead of three per week.
    • 👥The Premium Store will now have eight daily items instead of four. Two of those items will be available in exchange for Feathers.
    • 👥Mounts in the store (as well as the Tamer Pass) will now have a toggle to display their surf version in the store preview.

  • In-game tournaments have also gotten some attention:
    • They will now consist on 16 people, with a minimum of 13, instead of requiring 32 players with a minimum of 25.
    • 👥The Kudo and achievement/trophy associated to taking part in an in-game tournament will now pop-up if the tournament you sign up for falls through because of lack of players, so players on the lower ranks can now be more at ease.
  • 👥Following your feedback we’ve adjusted the Nalla quest (Coda: The Jubilee) so that successful Koish fishing isn’t a required activity anymore. This quest, which lets players access Tamer’s Paradise, will now only request any Koish from the Nuru Lodge.
  • 👥We’ve added a new option in the Settings menu to enable or disable the idle battle cameras.
  • 👥We’ve made some adjustments to the “Hold to run away” setting so that it now can be engaged on the first Temtem, instead of only applying when we performed the action on the second Temtem’s turn.
  • You will now only be able to retrieve items from the Club Vault of a Club if you’ve been part of that Club for at least 31 days.
  • 👥We’ve added a new visual indicator for Gears that shows if a Gear has already been used or has been disabled. This will help clarify Gears that activate only once per battle, like Refreshing Diabolo, Gears that deactivate other Gears like Snare, or Gears that get disabled through status conditions like Seized or through Traits like Burglar.
    • However, please note there’s a current known bug where deactivated Gears won’t show as such until it’s their time to shine if there’s a Frightening Tyranak on the board. We’ll get it fixed asap, sorry!
  • 👥We’ve added a new visual overexertion indicator. It will display in battle and in the Battle Log, but only once the turn ends!
  • 👥We’ve made some changes to the Temtem Details’ UI and the TVs won’t be shown in different colors as their values increase or decrease, as we believed it to be confusing since in Temtem high doesn’t always equal good. SVs will still maintain the current color-coded system.
  • 👥The Breeding UI has been improved to display more and better info. It will now show both parent’s available fertility, as well as a preview of the offspring’s fertility.
  • We’ve added a nifty outline to the UI on the Tems that are currently on the battlefield.
  • We’ve added a nifty new sound effect when claiming a Tamer Pass’ Weekly Quest.
  • When you reset a character on a given platform, and then use that same platform to do cross-progressing, the name of the character reset will be immediately available to use.

Balance

  • The TMR soft reset between Seasons has been changed from (1000 + TMR) /2 to (2000 + TMR) /3
    • The new ranked system was creating TMR out of the blue, so to speak, so a TMR inflation process was happening. If we kept the reset as it was, the gap between the Legend players and the rest was becoming greater with each Season, to a point where it could be unsurmountable for newbies to reach. The soft reset is now a bit more aggressive to combat that, so your rank come S4 will be a bit lower than it would’ve have been.
PvE
  • 👥Defeating K.Rex in the last turn of the battle, which used to result in a defeat, will now be considered a win even if the tower does the spoilery thing.
  • Likewise, we’re extending this to all PvE battles: when the match is a tie, it will count like a victory in your favor, granting an extra 1 HP to your last Temtem.
Economy
  • 👥The price of teleporting Matter Drones has been reduced from 500 ⇒ 250.
  • Tornado is now available as an ETC item.

2023.04.27 04:31 WubbaKnight Is this main board okay to reuse/repair?

Hi all. Not well versed in electronics, but know enough to diagnose an obvious problem, and need further clarification.
Asking about a main board for my Vizio TV. Was watching a show last night when the display started to flicker. A couple seconds later the TV made a popping noise, the display went dark, and started to smell of burnt electronics. After taking the back panel off - all the pcb's seem okay except the main board, where it looks like a piece (an inductor I think?) burnt and fell off the board. I can't find the inductor anywhere inside the TV or on the floor.
Looking around the internet for a whole board replacement, I've found that they are hard to source and expensive. Pictures of replacement boards show there to be an inductor in that missing spot almost identical to the one next to it labeled "100", but the missing one is labeled "R68". Similar looking products on DigiKey sell for only 98 cents. Much less than the price of the whole board.
I am wondering if this board looks good enough that I could just have somebody solder on another inductor where the old one was? I'm not sure if this failing inductor took out any other important pieces along with it. There is a small IC right above it that I would be most worried about being damaged. Would you trust this board enough to reuse it?

I want to throw a Shure Beta 58 on my IC-7300, and realize that I need to block the 8vdc coming from the rig. Most people insist it must be a non-polarized cap, but some people say polar is OK as long as the + is towards the radio. Anyone have any comments on that? I'd love to hear from someone who built a cable with a polar cap and everything works fine. Are people recommending non-polar for idiot-proofness?
I'm only asking cause I work at a TV station and we have a plethora of stuff here including an assortment of caps but I'm not finding any 1uF that look non-polar. I'd love to avoid ordering a 50 cent part from digi-key.

Hello all,
I'm preparing to repair a TV (Magnavox 47") with a bad power supply. I have new caps to replace the bulging ones, and apparently some of the TVS diodes on this model are susceptible to failure. After searching on Digi-key and elsewhere, some of the TVS diode values seem hard to find. The specific values are P4KE250A and P6KE120A. Seems like the number after P is the peak wattage (in hundreds), the number after KE is average breakdown voltage, and A means unidirectional. With that said, is it theoretically possible to replace both values with a P6KE250A? Thanks in advance?

a one-time new small savings scheme, Mahila Samman Savings Certificate, will be made available for a two-year period up to March 2025. This will offer deposit facility upto 2 lakh in the name of women or girls for a tenor of 2 years at fixed interest rate of 7.5 per cent with partial withdrawal option.
The maximum deposit limit for Senior Citizen Savings Scheme will be enhanced from 15 lakh to ` 30 lakh.
The maximum deposit limit for Monthly Income Account Scheme will be enhanced from 4.5 lakh to 9 lakh for single account and from 9 lakh to 15 lakh for joint account
The entire fifty-year loan to states has to be spent on capital expenditure within 2023-24. Most of this will be at the discretion of states, but a part will be conditional on states increasing their actual capital
expenditure. Parts of the outlay will also be linked to, or allocated for, the following purposes: Scrapping old government vehicles, Urban planning reforms and actions, Financing reforms in urban local bodies to make them creditworthy for municipal bonds, Housing for police personnel above or as part of police stations, Constructing Unity Malls,  Children and adolescents’ libraries and digital infrastructure, and  State share of capital expenditure of central schemes.
States will be allowed a fiscal deficit of 3.5 per cent of GSDP of which 0.5 per cent will be tied to power sector reforms.
The Revised Estimate of the total receipts other than borrowings is 24.3 lakh crore, of which the net tax receipts are 20.9 lakh crore. The Revised Estimate of the total expenditure is 41.9 lakh crore, of which the capital expenditure is about 7.3 lakh crore
The Revised Estimate of the fiscal deficit is 6.4 per cent of GDP, adhering to the Budget Estimate.
Coming to 2023-24, the total receipts other than borrowings and the total expenditure are estimated at 27.2 lakh crore and 45 lakh crore respectively. The net tax receipts are estimated at 23.3 lakh crore.
The fiscal deficit is estimated to be 5.9 per cent of GDP. In my Budget Speech for 2021-22, the govt had announced that we plan to continue the path of fiscal consolidation, reaching a fiscal deficit below 4.5 per cent by 2025-26 with a fairly steady decline over the period. We have adhered to this path, and the govt reiterate its intention to bring the fiscal deficit below 4.5 per cent of GDP by 2025-26.
To finance the fiscal deficit in 2023-24, the net market borrowings from dated securities are estimated at 11.8 lakh crore. The balance financing is expected to come from small savings and other sources. The gross market borrowings are estimated at 15.4 lakh crore.
proposal to reduce the number of basic customs duty rates on goods, other than textiles and agriculture, from 21 to 13. As a result, there are minor changes in the basic custom duties, cesses and surcharges on some items including toys, bicycles, automobiles and naphtha.
To avoid cascading of taxes on blended compressed natural gas, proposal to exempt excise duty on GST-paid compressed bio gas contained in it. To further provide impetus to green mobility, customs duty exemption is being extended to import of capital goods and machinery required for manufacture of lithium-ion cells for batteries used in electric vehicles.
mobile phone production in India has increased from 5.8 crore units valued at about 18,900 crore in 2014-15 to 31 crore units valued at over 2,75,000 crore in the last financial year. To further deepen domestic value addition in manufacture of mobile phones, proposal to provide relief in customs duty on import of certain parts and inputs like camera lens and continue the concessional duty on lithium-ion cells for batteries for another year.

the basic customs duty on electric kitchen chimney is being increased from 7.5 per cent to 15 per cent and that on heat coils for these is proposed to be reduced from 20 per cent to 15 per cent.
To further enhance the export competitiveness of marine products, particularly shrimps, duty is being reduced on key inputs for domestic manufacture of shrimp feed.

Proposal to increase the duties on articles made therefrom to enhance the duty differential. proposal to increase the import duty on silver dore, bars and articles to align them with that on gold and platinum.
To facilitate availability of raw materials for the steel sector, exemption from Basic Customs Duty on raw materials for manufacture of CRGO Steel, ferrous scrap and nickel cathode is being continued.
the concessional BCD of 2.5 per cent on copper scrap is also being continued to ensure the availability of raw materials for secondary copper producers who are mainly in the MSME sector.
The basic customs duty rate on compounded rubber is being increased from 10 per cent to ‘25 per cent or ` 30/kg whichever is lower’, at par with that on natural rubber other than latex, to curb circumvention of duty.
National Calamity Contingent Duty (NCCD) on specified cigarettes was last revised three years ago. This is proposed to be revised upwards by about 16 per cent. tax payers’ portal received a maximum of 72 lakh returns in a day; processed more than 6.5 crore returns this year; average processing period reduced from 93 days in financial year 13-14 to 16 days now; and 45 per cent of the returns were processed within 24 hours. We intend to further improve this, roll out a next-generation Common IT Return Form for tax payer convenience, and also plan to strengthen the grievance redressal mechanism.
Micro enterprises with turnover up to 2 crore and certain professionals with turnover of up to 50 lakh can avail the benefit of presumptive taxation. proposal to provide enhanced limits of 3 crore and 75 lakh respectively, to the tax payers whose cash receipts are no more than 5 per cent. Moreover, to support MSMEs in timely receipt of payments, I propose to allow deduction for expenditure incurred on payments made to them only when payment is actually made.
new co-operatives that commence manufacturing activities till 31.3.2024 shall get the benefit of a lower tax rate of 15 per cent, as is presently available to new manufacturing companies.
proposal to provide an opportunity to sugar co-operatives to claim payments made to sugarcane farmers for the period prior to assessment year 2016-17 as expenditure. This is expected to provide them with a relief of almost ` 10,000 crore.
providing a higher limit of 2 lakh per member for cash deposits to and loans in cash by Primary Agricultural Co-operative Societies (PACS) and Primary Co-operative Agriculture and Rural Development Banks (PCARDBs).a higher limit of 3 crore for TDS on cash withdrawal is being provided to co-operative societies.
propose to extend the date of incorporation for income tax benefits to start-ups from 31.03.23 to 31.3.24.further proposal to provide the benefit of carry forward of losses on change of shareholding of start-ups from seven years of incorporation to ten years.
To reduce the pendency of appeals at Commissioner level,proposal to deploy about 100 Joint Commissioners for disposal of small appeals. We shall also be more selective in taking up cases for scrutiny of returns already received this year.
There are a number of proposals relating to rationalisation and simplification. Income of authorities, boards and commissions set up by statutes of the Union or State for the purpose of housing, development of cities, towns and villages, and regulating, or regulating and developing an activity or matter, is proposed to be exempted from income tax. Other major measures in this direction are: Removing the minimum threshold of ` 10,000/- for TDS and clarifying taxability relating to online gaming; Not treating conversion of gold into electronic gold receipt and vice versa as capital gain; Reducing the TDS rate from 30 per cent to 20 per cent on taxable portion of EPF withdrawal in non-PAN cases; and Taxation on income from Market Linked Debentures.
Other major proposals in the Finance Bill relate to the following: Extension of period of tax benefits to funds relocating to IFSC, GIFT City till 31.03.2025; Decriminalisation under section 276A of the Income Tax Act; Allowing carry forward of losses on strategic disinvestment including that of IDBI Bank; and Providing EEE status to Agniveer Fund.
Currently, those with income up to ` 5 lakh do not pay any income tax in both old and new tax regimes. proposal to increase the rebate limit to 7 lakh in the new tax regime. Thus, persons in the new tax regime, with income up to 7 lakh will not have to pay any tax.
The second proposal relates to middle-class individuals. introduced, in the year 2020, the new personal income tax regime with six income slabs starting from 2.5 lakh. proposal to change the tax structure in this regime by reducing the number of slabs to five and increasing the tax exemption limit to 3 lakh. The new tax rates are: 0-3 lakh Nil 3-6 lakh 5 per cent 6-9 lakh 10 per cent 9-12 lakh 15 per cent 12-15 lakh 20 per cent Above 15 lakh 30 per cent
This will provide major relief to all tax payers in the new regime. An individual with an annual income of 9 lakh will be required to pay only 45,000/-. This is only 5 per cent of his or her income. It is a reduction of 25 per cent on what he or she is required to pay now, ie,60,000/-. Similarly, an individual with an income of 15 lakh would be required to pay only 1.5 lakh or 10 per cent of his or her income, a reduction of 20 per cent from the existing liability of 1,87,500/.
proposal to extend the benefit ofstandard deduction to the new tax regime. Each salaried person with an income of 15.5 lakh or more will thus stand to benefit by Rs.52,500.
proposal to reduce the highest surcharge rate from 37 per cent to 25 per cent in the new tax regime. This would result in reduction of the maximum tax rate to 39 per cent.
the limit of 3 lakh for tax exemption on leave encashment on retirement of non-government salaried employees was last fixed in the year 2002, when the highest basic pay in the government was 30,000/- pm. In line with the increase in government salaries,the govt is proposing to increase this limit to 25 lakh.
The govt is making the new income tax regime as the default tax regime. However, citizens will continue to have the option to avail the benefit of the old tax regime.
As a result of these proposals, revenue of about 38,000 crore – 37,000 crore in direct taxes and 1,000 crore in indirect taxes – will be forgone while revenue of about 3,000 crore will be additionally mobilized. Thus, the total revenue forgone is about 35,000 crore annually.

For those seeing this for the first time, there’s this crazy neurodivergent thing I do with the music of many of my favourite artists, and that is to compile comprehensive collections of customised albums that
  1. contain as many of the artists’ songs (including deep cuts as deeply as I can find) as possible, moreorless chronologically (while omitting the occasional songs that are either redundant or that I don’t have space for and don’t mind sacrificing),
  2. have fluid seamless transitions between all tracks on every album (my favourite part), and
  3. extend the albums to all have an equal number of tracks (thanks to a kind of OCD), except in special cases.
Often, with enough non-album songs, I compile completely new/fake albums. In the case of Linkin Park, there were enough non-album tracks that every single main LP album (as well as most of the main albums of non-LP Mike and Chester projects) has a “companion album” of the same number of tracks (in some cases, the companion is a remix album) – I settled on 16 tracks per album, except for the special cases Hunting of a Thousand Things, Dropped Frames, Cognition, and Ziggurats Variations.
This is the oldest of my custom discographies, which I have been working on since 2014 (specifically the editing of albums – I’ve been curating an as-extensive-as-possible Linkin Park collection since long before that), adding more material at least once a year, sometimes several times a year.
Very nearly the entire collective discography of Linkin Park, Chester Bennington, and Mike Shinoda is represented (including Grey Daze, Xero, Fort Minor, mmm… Cookies, Dead By Sunrise, Stone Temple Pilots w/ Chester B., Mike Shinoda solo, and collaborations with other artists), including tonnes of tracks not even officially released (loads of which I found courtesy of LPLive (where I seem to keep finding more things to add on a regular basis)).
Tracks were not omitted lightly, but at necessity and after careful practical and aesthetic consideration – many tracks once omitted did in fact make it onto additional albums of the collection at later dates.
The arrangement of tracks and albums is subject to change as new material becomes available, or as I encounter additional unreleased old material.
The collection currently stands at 58 albums, comprising 942 tracks across 43 hours 34 minutes.

Background
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, an archipelago west off southern Morocco that belongs to Spain. Its largest settlement is the city of Santa Cruz, with approximately 205,000 inhabitants. Along with the city of Las Palmas (381,000 inhabitants), Santa Cruz is a co-capital city of Canary Islands.
Tenerife's economy is based on national and international tourism and leisure.
Tomás and Beatriz
Tomás Antonio Gimeno Casañas was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on October 31st, 1983. He had two older sisters, Mónica and María Dolores. Theirs is one of the wealthiest families in Tenerife. Their father owns several banana and cacti farmlands, ownership that dates back generations. He also owns one of the many country clubs in the island. In addition to that, he also competed in over 70 rally races in the Canary Islands from 1975 to 1992. Here you can see him at his final race -he's the man driving the red Mercedes 190E*. Their mother (a co-owner of the aforementioned properties) is a former model and beauty pageant winner.
\Important note; the young boy that appears in the video is NOT Tomás Gimeno. In fact, that boy isn't even Spanish (his accent points at an Argentine origin).*
Growing up extremely privileged, Mónica, María Dolores and Tomás had an immense amount of opportunities to thrive and find their ways in life. Tomás' sisters did indeed make a good use of such upbringing; Currently, Mónica is a successful lawyer that owns her own office since 2014. Her resumè includes experience working for prestigious law firms. On the other hand, María Dolores works as the Director of Institutional Relations at Cajamar (a Spanish credit union specialized in finances and insurance). But Tomás didn't follow his sisters into building a career of his own. In fact, he didn't even follow them into living a responsible life. Instead, he became the archetypal trust fund baby; unlike his sisters, by 2021 Tomás (then 37-years old) had not yet worked a single day of his life. While Mónica and María Dolores studied hard in their younger years, the young Tomás preferred to spend his days playing padel at the country club, racing with karts, cruising around in his sailboat, riding his jet ski or just going to parties with other local rich teenagers.
It was precisely socializing among these groups of privileged youngsters when, at fifteen-years old, he met a young blonde, green eyed girl. Beatriz Zimmermann de Zárate (born in 1985) had also been born into wealth. She's a Canarian Spanish citizen just like Tomás, but her father is a German national (hence her German first surname). In the following years they'd develop a friendship while dinning in the most expensive restaurants, going to numerous trips abroad, playing golf or tennis and throwing parties in million-euros mansions. In 2003, Tomás and Beatriz (now aged 20 and 18, respectively) began a romantic relationship.
Just like Tomás' sisters, Beatriz too was aware of the unique set of resources and opportunities her privileged upbringing provided her with, and had decided to use them to build her own career and financial independence. In fact, Beatriz is currently the CEO of an important grain and cereal production company in Tenerife, and she also holds important executive positions in two other companies. Even though she always encouraged Tomás to work on his own future as well, he never listened to her advice. Tomás would instead use his family's wealth to indulge in a completely hedonistic lifestyle free of any responsibility. His own family tried to persuade him over the years to at least attend any university of his choice go earn his Business Administration Degree. I was all in vain; as his own family would put it later on; "Tomás was the family's spoiled brat".
To make things worse, Tomás became a regular user of alcohol and recreational drugs -mainly cocaine and pills. He was regularly seen hanging around the most exclusive clubs in Tenerife many nights a week. Over the years, Beatriz suffered his irresponsibility in silence. At first she suspected he was regularly cheating on her during these wild nights out, but her suspicions turned into certainties more than once later on. Every time she tried to leave him he would beg for another opportunity and promise to her that he'd change his ways. She would always forgive him, but Tomás would never keep his word. Not only he continued with his irresponsible lifestyle; he also became possessive and controlling over Beatriz, and sometimes he hit her. His aggression wasn't limited to just his household; Tomás was known for having a short-fused temper, especially when on alcohol or cocaine. His nights out often ended up in fistfights, with Beatriz having to bail him out of a jail cell in more than one instance. To make things worse, he had been implicated in several thefts, and had innumerable tickets for traffic violations; all of them pending payment.
It could be said that the most constructive thing Tomás did with his life was pursuing a career in sports, especially in go-kart racing. However, his performance never amounted to much (he failed to qualify for the national championship). While some of his close friends described Tomás as 'energetic, extroverted, driven', many of the people that worked for his family had much less kind words to describe him; 'arrogant, volatile' were commonly used terms referred to him. As for his sport rivals, they described Tomás as a competitor with a strong drive, but also one really sore loser and even a worse winner; Tomás often celebrated wins by taunting and humiliating his opponents. In one instance, after losing a friendly tennis match against an acquaintance, an enraged Tomás smashed his tennis racket against the concrete court surface.
Sometimes Tomás' true personality was hinted in his speech. Here are two videos in which he was interviewed by TV reporters. In this 2011 interview about kart-racing he refers to himself as "a natural-born winner", just to quickly add "in attitude". In this other interview (timestamp 0:30) his male chauvinism comes into light by the demeaning way he talks about women; when asked what his views are on one-night stands with women he says he'd do it, but "it depends of how hot she is". And then; "I need guarantees that she's not a junkie. I like my women clean."
Olivia and Anna
In spite of these character flaws, Beatriz remained at his side even when in 2014 Tomás almost died from an drug overdose and needed to be hospitalized. In March 14th, 2015, the couple welcomed their first child; a girl they named Olivia, and they rented a cozy rural finca off the small town of Igueste (a 15 minute drive south from the capital Santa Cruz) to move in. In August 12th, 2018 Beatriz would give birth to their second child, a boy. Unfortunately, the baby did not survive labor. According to Beatriz, Tomás was deeply saddened and traumatized by the baby's death.
While their relationship was absolutely dysfunctional -Tomás didn't stop berating Beatriz and his infidelities continued- Tomás was very fond of his daughter Olivia, and even Beatriz herself has attested he was a good father to her. In summer of 2019 Beatriz became pregnant again. However, things would drastically change; she finally made the decision to leave Tomás. She assured him that he would still be an important part in Olivia's life, promise she kept. During the separation, Beatriz received support not only from her own family, but as well from Tomas'; they were very aware of how he disrespected her, and encouraged her to look after her own wellbeing. On February 20th, 2020, their baby was born; a girl named Anna. Just like with Olivia, Tomás became very fond of his newly born daughter, which prompted Beatriz of reaffirm herself in her decision of share the custody of the girls with their father, without the need to go through a painful battle in court. Meanwhile, Olivia became very close with her new sister; far from expressing the often common new sibling jealousy, Olivia became inseparable from Anna, happy to do things for her like feeding her.
Things were going alright at first. Beatriz moved out, and Tomás began dating another woman (she is the director at this private German language pedagogical center Olivia would start attending to in autumn of 2020). Tomás fulfilled his responsibilities as a father, and the girls were reportedly happy around their father. Many neighbors at Igueste recalled this, as they described Tomás as a loving dad when he took the girls to the playground, to the beach or to have lunch at a bar-restaurant. At no point they saw the girls being afraid of Tomás, nobody thought he could hurt them. However, that peaceful dynamic changed during the summer; Beatriz began dating a Belgian citizen 26 years her senior named Eric Domb. 61-year old Eric is the owner of Tropical Fruit, a company that specializes in the exportation of exotic plants and the CEO of a zoo named Pairi Daiza in Brugelette, Belgium. Beatriz had met Eric years earlier, when he bought crops from Tomás to expand his business. Tomás became enraged when he learned Beatriz had moved in with Eric at his residence in the upscale borough of Randazul. "I don't want that old guy to have any business over my daughters", Tomás once told one of his friends. He also constantly accused Eric of abusing the girls, although he never gave proof of such accusations.
Tensions escalated, with a jealous Tomás often aggressively texting Beatriz about her relationship with Eric, often calling her "a whore". It all finally blew up in the evening of August 30th, 2020. That day Eric took Beatriz and the girls to have dinner at one of the most exquisite restaurants in Tenerife. At some point during the drive to the restaurant Beatriz noticed Tomás' car following them. Eric finally parked at the restaurant's parking lot and tried to rush Beatriz and the girls into the restaurant. But Tomás had also parked there; he jumped out of his car wielding a golf iron, ran up to Eric, dragged him to the parking lot and started beating him up with the iron. Beatriz screamed for help as she tried to drag Tomás away from Eric (who was doing his best do defend himself and de-escalate the situation), but Tomás hit her back and even dragged her by her hair. The restaurant staff finally managed to shield Eric from Tomás as he took refuge inside of the restaurant. Police was called, but by the time officers arrived Tomás had already driven away from the scene. This entire assault happened with Olivia and Anna watching from inside of the restaurant.
Eric required medical treatment at a local emergency room for head and facial injuries, fortunately none of these were serious. Both he and Beatriz declined pressing charges against Tomás. Beatriz didn't want Tomás to walk away from the girls' lives, since they reportedly felt loved and happy around him.
One day in December of 2020 Tomás phoned Beatriz, and started to verbally abuse her and made such threats to her safety that Beatriz felt urged to report him to the authorities. In fact, she walked into a police station to request a restraining order, but once there she eventually backed down on that idea. The officer that attended to her request tried to convince her on doing it (Tomás had already shown such predisposition to violence that she could have easily gotten the order approved), but Beatriz finally decided against. Still, she agreed with police to be phoned weekly for wellness checks.
Tomás left Beatriz alone during the winter, while the young mother continued living her life with Eric. The last of of these wellness-checks by phone from police took place in Marcha. Beatriz told them that everything was alright.
On March 19th, 2021, Tomás crashed his Yamaha YZ125 while doing some motocross racing with some friends some of his privately-owned lands in the municipality of Güimar. As a result, Tomás sustained four broken ribs and the accident had also worsened an old collarbone injury. Even though the doctor had assured him the rib injuries didn't need further treatment beyond rest and painkillers, Tomás was in such excruciating pain that he could barely bend his torso. In fact, he couldn't even pick Olivia up and carry her on his arms.
The Disappearance
Around mid-April Tomás took the first of many suspicious steps. Back in August he had purchased a brand-new, black Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio (a 510-horsepower saloon car worth about €49,000 -or $52,000- before taxes in Spain) and now for some reason he had transferred the car's registration to his father. Here's a short video of Tomás speeding away in the Alfa Romeo, recorded by one of his friends the day he acquired the car.
The morning of Tuesday, April 27th, 2021, Tomás phoned Beatriz to tell her he wanted to spend the evening with the girls, and she agreed to it as long as he returned them to her at 9:00 PM. Tomás picked the girls up at noon. He then took Olivia to the German language school (as said earlier, his new girlfriend worked there), where Olivia would stay at from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
He then took Anna with him for a walk, along with his father. At 5:00 PM he returned to the German language school to pick Olivia up, but before leaving he went to his girlfriend's office. Tomás handed his girlfriend a small package sealed with duct tape, instructing her not to open it before 11:00 PM. However, the woman didn't wait that long and opened it at around 5:20 PM. It contained a stack of banknotes amounting to €6,200 ($6,500) and a vague farewell letter to her. "Remember me for who I was and not for what I did, please", Tomás asked her in that letter.
At 5:30 PM he drove Olivia to her tennis lesson. He then drove to his parents' home and dropped Anna there. At 5:50 PM, CCTV at the pier in Santa Cruz where he had his motorboat Esquilón captured him arriving in his white Audi A3 and doing a quick overhaul of his boat's engine. The cameras also captured him driving away a bit before 6:00 PM.
At 6:30 PM Tomás picked Olivia up from the tennis lesson and drove to his parent's home with the girl. The trio stayed there until around 7:30 PM. Tomás said goodbye to his father with a long hug that the girls' grandparents found strange. Tomás drove away, while the girls waved goodbye at their grandparents from the backseat. They were the last people to see Olivia and Anna alive.
At 9:00 PM Beatriz went to Tomás' house and phoned him to ask for the girls back. Tomás told her that they weren't home, that he had taken the girls for dinner out and that he'd drop the girls at Beatriz' place later. At 7:47 PM Tomás had sent her via WhatsApp a short audio clip of Olivia's voice, in which the 6-year old casually reminded her mother of an errand she had pending.
At 9:51 PM Beatriz called Tomás again. A very angry Tomás told her that he had left the island with the girls before hanging on her. Beatriz phoned him back immediately. This time Tomás told her that she'd never see him nor the girls again. He told her that he was going to start a new life somewhere, and that the girls would be taken care of. An alarmed Beatriz sped to the police station to report the abduction.
While the report was being processed at the station, the police officers instructed Beatriz to phone Tomás again. He finally answered at 10:40 PM, and he told her once more she'd never see him nor the girls again. He also told her that he couldn't allow the girls to grow up without him. One of the police officers asked Beatriz for her phone and talked with Tomás. However, Tomás did not want to talk to the officer and cut the call. At 10:44 PM either Tomás switched his phone off or its battery died.
Tomás finally answered to Beatriz' calls again at 1:28 AM. Instructed by a criminal psychologist present at the station, Beatriz asked Tomás to think about how much the girls would miss their mother and their grandparents. Tomás told her he was aware of that, but that with time they'd get over it. At 2:05 AM he phoned his father to tell him that he's sorry, but that "he [Tomás] would finally be in peace". At 2:11 AM Tomás and Beatriz talked for the last time, with Tomás saying goodbye to her. In the following minutes he phoned many of his friends and relatives, to say goodbye and give away his properties. The last of these calls ended at 2:27 AM, after which Tomás' phone didn't ping anymore.
The Investigation
The Civil Guard took the case, and began looking into the strongest possibility; an escape by sea. At the same time, CCTV footage of all the places Tomás could have been at was requested and potential witnesses were questioned. And of course, missing people alerts about the girls and Tomás were produced.
Thanks to traffic CCTV and the GPS data from Tomás phone, the investigators learned that after leaving his parents' house Tomás drove the 14 kilometers (8.5 miles) to his finca at Igueste in just six minutes. Which means he was driving real fast, at an average speed of 140 km/h (or 85 mph) and possibly with peaks of over 160 km/h (100 mph). This is, again, with the little girls in the backseat. A neighbor at Igueste told investigators later that she heard Olivia calling for her father around 8:00 PM.
Tomás' Audi A3 was captured driving back to his parents' place at around 9:05 PM, although he didn't ring the bell nor confronted his parents. Later that night his father would find Tomás' dog Otto pacing across the backyard; apparently Tomás had sneaked the dog in. He also left there two debit cards with their PIN codes written on a sticky note and the keys of his new Alfa Romeo. The sports car was found later parked next to a real estate belonging to his father in Guaza, 71 kilometers (or 44 miles) south from Santa Cruz. Further request of traffic cameras' footage revealed Tomás had parked the Alfa Romeo there at around 12:30 AM of April 27th, about 19 hours before the girls were last seen.
He then had driven back to the pier. At 9:27 PM the CCTV there captured him again arriving in the Audi. This time, the cameras recorded him unloading a series of objects from the car into his motorboat. He did this in three trips. In the first one Tomás is seen loading two large gym bags into the Esquilón. At 9:40 PM, the cameras captured Tomás driving his boat out of the pier and into the sea.
At 11:21 PM a Guardia Civil motorboat had intercepted Tomás' Esquilón out in the sea. Tomás was driving the boat back to Santa Cruz. The officers initially intended to give Tomás a ticket for breaking curfew (at the time Tenerife was experiencing a surge in new COVID-19 cases and Santa Cruz' authorities had put a curfew from 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM in place), but they eventually let him go with a warning. Unfortunately, at this point the coastal guard had not been warned about Tomás yet. The pier's CCTV captured Tomás' return shortly after.
At around 11:45 PM Tomás had walked into a gas station nearby. He purchased a phone charger, a pack of cigarettes and a bottle of mineral water. Shortly after he walked up to the pier's security guard and asked him if he could put his phone to charge in his office; the security guard accepted.
At 12:27 AM Tomás can be seen in the pier's CCTV again, jumping back into the Esquilón. He drove it back to the sea. Tomás has never been seen ever since.
At 5:47 PM of Wednesday April 28th Tomás' Esquilón was found drifting away in the sea some 15 kilometers (9 miles) south off Santa Cruz, with no one on board. While the Civil Guard towed the motorboat back to the island they also found Anna's Maxi-Cosi floating in the waters.
The Search
The two main hypotheses at the time regarded by LE were a) Tomás had left with his daughters for somewhere abroad and b) Tomás has murdered his daughters and gotten rid of their bodies in the sea before killing himself.
Initially, there were clues that gave hope for the first scenario; besides transferring his new car's ownership to his father, Tomás had transferred a total of €55,000 (or some $60,000) between two of his bank accounts in the days prior to his and the girls' disapearances. In addition to that, he had also withdrawn a total of €70,000 (about $74,000) from several ATM's. He had tried to open a Wizink online bank account, but he couldn't because the bank's website didn't recognize the postal code Tomás had tried to submit. A search warrant on Tomás' residence was approved; the finca's facilities were in a rather unkempt state; many of the girls' toys were scattered, others had been placed on plastic bags. The swimming pool was empty and dirty (pictures taken on May 10th).
However, new evidence in the following days gave reason to the most pessimistic scenario; the Esquilón was inspected by the investigators once back in the pier. It was missing its anchor. Tomás cellphone wasn't in it. A luminol test found evidence of potential past presence of blood in the motorboat's floor (although it could never be proven to be of human origin, investigators said it could also belong to fish). Scuba oxygen tanks and a oxygen dive belt belonging to Tomás were nowhere to be found, either in the boat or anywhere else where he could have stocked them. Besides, the Civil Guard had brought from Madrid to Tenerife two of the most reliable sniffer dogs in Spain; Junco, a two-year old Spanish water dog that has been able to detect traces of blood in a piece of clothing that has been washed in hot water as many as five times in a row, and Bill, a year-old Belgian shepherd that excels as a cadaver dog. The dogs were brought to Tomás' car, motorboat and residence, and they gave positive signs at three different points in the finca, one of these was a piece of disturbed soil next to a tree in the lawn (videos of the dogs at the finca here and here). The soil was inspected twice, but nothing was found.
Investigators never ruled out the possibility he had fled with the girls. According to one of Tomás' friends, he often voiced his daydreaming of leaving for Latin America. The investigation was on the look for potential clues in that direction, but most of the efforts were placed on looking for clues in the seafloor. The Canary Islands are of volcanic origin, and therefore the surrounding seafloor reaches very significant depths even with the shoreline in sight; the Anaga-Agaete channel reaches depths of more than 2,500 meters (8,200 feet). Because of this, mainland Spain sent the oceanographic research vessel Ángeles Alvariño, which arrived at Tenerife on May 29th, 2021. This ship is equipped with a very powerful and precise sonar system, and it also counts with Liropus, an underwater ROV capable of operating at depths down to 2,180 meters (7,150 feet).
The vessel's team put together a search plan; they'd go to the point in the sea where Tomás' phone pinged for the last time and from there Liropus would scan the seafloor in 500 meters wide (1,640 feet) alleys across the entire presumed area the Esquilón was adrift until it was found plus an extra search perimeter in the north. This was a really tough job; due to the volcanic nature of the terrain, this is not a regular flat seafloor made of sand and silt; it's a rugged landscape full of debris, crevices and steep slopes everywhere. Critical pieces of evidence could be hidden in any of these features, in places the ROV couldn't reach.
At around 2:00 PM of Monday June 7th, 2021, Liropus found an scuba oxygen tank and a duvet cover. Once out of the sea, these items were confirmed to belong to Tomás Gimeno. And then at noon of Thursday June 10th, while exploring the seafloor in the northern end of the search area, Liropus' cameras captured something horrifying in the darkness.
Resting on a slope at 888 meters deep (2,913 feet) there was a boat anchor with a couple of gym bags chained to it. One of them was torn open, revealing no contents inside. The other wasn't. The disturbing finding was then raised from the seafloor to the Ángeles Alvariño. They opened the intact gym bag. Inside, they found the remains of a young female child, wrapped in a towel and stuffed inside of a plastic bag. The body was in a state of decomposition, however not too advanced since down there the water temperature is of 2 to 4 ºC (35 to 39 ºF), which slows down the decaying process. The body's fingerprints were sampled.
That same evening the devastating news were shared with the press and media; the body in that bag belonged to the 6-year old Olivia.
From this point on, investigators were sure Anna had met the same fate and looked for her remains (which could have been inside the burst gym bag), as well as for Tomás'. However, theirs haven't been found to date. In the morning of June 21st, Liropus found a couple of oxygen tanks a few kilometers south of where the anchor had been found. They were found 45 meters apart (148 feet) at a depth of 1,331 meters (4,367 feet). No further findings would be made after that. Finally on July 1st, after a month of search, 392 hours of underwater ROV footage across 250 sq.km (97 sq.mi), almost 6,000 crew man-hours and spending about €350,000 ($370,000), the authorities called the search off and the Ángeles Alvariño sailed back to mainland Spain. This decision was based in the fact that finding Tomás and Anna's remains there would be highly unlikely, especially since during the search Liropus was almost lost in crevices twice.
A devastated Beatriz Zimmerman made a public statement the day following the departure of the Ángeles Alvariño, thanking her crew and the authorities for their extremely laborious efforts in spite of the tragic outcome.
Reconstruction of the Events
Once back in Tenerife, the autopsy performed on Olivia's body produced a series of results that helped fill in the blanks in the chronological chain of events of that dark April 27th.
Olivia's body was well preserved enough to elucidate the cause of her death. She had died from pulmonary edema. This is a condition most commonly seen in massive heart attacks, most often in older patients. It can also happen at high altitude. Much less commonly, it's a clue of a violent death via asphyxiation. Among other things, a series of small lacerations around Olivia's mouth and nostrils led the coroner to conclude she had been smothered to death, possibly with a pillow or a blanket. At first it was thought she had been sedated with lorazepam (an empty package of this drug was found at Tomás' residence back in May), but the toxicology report did not find any trace of the medication on Olivia's system.
This was not a heat-of-the-moment crime of passion; Tomás had planned to kill the girls at least a few days before the disappearance. And he did it for one single reason; to hurt Beatriz in the worst way possible. It was cold and calculated revenge, and he did it because in his narcissistic and immature mind Beatriz had wronged him by ending their relationship. Revenge he set in motion by doing these money transfers.
He first rushed to the pier on the evening of April 27th to check the engine; Tomás needed to be damn sure Esquilón wouldn't fail him later in the night during his escape. After returning to his finca from his parents' residence he likely smothered the girls at some point between 8:00 PM and around 9:15. The neighbor that heard Olivia's voice didn't indicate that the girl sounded frightened.
Still at his residence in Igueste, Tomás wrapped the dead bodies of his daughters with bath towels and then stuffed them inside of plastic bags before placing them inside two gym bags. He then packed clothes and other items in a total of four travel bags and briefcases and loaded them along with his dog and the bodies of Anna and Olivia in the Audi. He drove with his dead daughters all the way to his parents' residence, sneaked into the back yard and left his dog Otto there, plus a couple of debit cards. He was likely giving his money to his parents.
After that he went loaded the girls' bodies and his luggage on his motorboat, before sailing away. He drove it to a point about ten kilometers (six miles) into the sea; at that point the seabed descends in a much steeper slope. The place had been used in the past as a 'ship cemetery'. Tomás knew this, that's why he chose this spot to drop the anchor with its chain tying the gym bags together to itself. In his diabolical plan, Beatriz would never get any closure.
However, it seems the anchor hit the slope before sliding down into even deeper waters. Fortunately, it was slowed down by a collision with the remains of an old freight container. Had that not been the case, the anchor would have continued its descent to much greater depths. It may have never been found.
He came back, was almost caught by the coastal guard and bought the phone charger. The security guard tried to warn him about sailing again after the curfew, but according to him Tomás politely rejected his advice. He told him he could keep the brand new phone charger before sailing away.
Given the fact he withdrew so much money and packed significant luggage into the boat, it's likely Tomás seriously considered fleeing to another country. However, his final mental state was likely one of extreme anxiety, maybe even regret. He likely threw his phone to the sea at 2:27 PM. He may have put the diving belt on, equipped himself with diving oxygen tanks and committed suicide by jumping into the ocean; as a recreational diver he knew that as he descended further into the deep the nitrogen in his bloodstream would cause him to experience narcosis, thus hindering his fear and survival instinct. Tomás body' was likely skeletonized by the time the Ángeles Alvariño was looking for his remains.
Aftermath
The case is currently closed, since circumstantial evidence points at the probable death of Tomás Gimeno. However, Spanish authorities are still open to new clues that could lead to Tomás being alive somewhere. Tomás is currently 38-years old. He's 185 cm tall (or 6ft1), medium complexion and weights 75 kg (or 160 pounds). Brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing dark shorts and a black T-shirt. Tomás can speak English, and he can speak German too (he learned it from Beatriz). If alive, he could have changed his appearance.
Beatriz Zimmermann continues engaged to Eric Domb. On April 27th, 2022, a year after the disappearances, Beatriz made her first public appearance in several months. She announced that she was legally removing the "Gimeno" last name from the girls' records. She also revealed that she and Eric are expecting a new baby.
