2024.05.19 04:48 DefiantFlamingo8940 Traveling with a cardboard bike box, Montreal Airport - Air Canada

I recently traveled with a cardboard bike box through Montreal Airport (YUL) with Air Canada. It was my first time doing so and I had a few doubts beforehand. So I thought I'd share my experience here in case it could help others looking for information, as I've seen people discussing this subject here.
Where to get the box?
Any bike shop:
-possibly the cheapest but also the most unreliable and time consuming
-might need to call multiple shops, sometimes inconveniently located
CL Cycle (35$)
-two bike shops in the Plateau Mont-Royal neighborhood, both about 1km away from a metro station
-apparently sell cardboard bike boxes for 35$, sometimes show as out of stock online
Gare d’autocars de Montréal (17.25$)
-Montreal’s bus station, situated downtown at Berri-UQAM metro station (easily reached by bike from central neighborhoods or by metro which accepts bikes outside of weekdays peak hours)
-the option I went for as it's both affordable and convenient
-sells bike boxes for 17.25$ through Expedibus shipping service
-just ask for a bike box at the main bus ticket counter, no need to reserve in advance, they should pretty much always have them in stock, they also provide tape
-I couldn't measure the box but it was not super long, I removed the front wheel and handlebar of my rigid 29er MTB (with an admittedly long wheelbase) and it just barely fit, some people may need to remove both wheels
-there is one hole on each side to use as handle, but they're fragile, using them to lift the bike caused as significant tear in the cardboard that I had to patch
-there’s usually plenty of space inside the bus station to work on your bike and pack it
-while there are often interesting characters hanging around the bus station, Montreal is a safe place, but still keep an eye on your valuables
-from the bus station there are regular city buses going to the airport (STM 747 line) which accept bikes and cost 11$
Montreal Airport - Safe Bag (70$)
-two kiosks at the airport, opening hours from early morning to evening
-over the phone they told me they sold cardboard bike boxes for 70$ each (which seems outrageous), and that they always have some available (no surprise)
-while the airport is easily reachable by bike, it's a much longer bike ride than to the Gare d’autocars for people staying or living closer to downtown, a long bike ride that you might want to avoid before a long flight if the weather is rainy or super hot
How to get to the airport?
747 bus from the Gare d’autocars to the airport (11$)
-costs 11$ which you can buy in person at the bus station counter when you buy your bike box, can also be bought anywhere else that sells STM tickets including the apps Chrono and Transit, can buy it as L’Occasionnelle which works as 24h day pass for public transit on Montreal Island including the airport bus
-can pay cash in the bus with coins only and the bus driver does not provide change
-the bus line runs 24h/7, multiple times per hour during the day and at least every hour at night
-leaves directly from gate 15 inside the Gare d’autocars, and then makes a few stops downtown before taking the highway to the airport
-should take 50min to an hour to get to the airport depending on traffic, construction, and, more importantly, confused passengers not knowing how to pay their ticket
-the bus accepts boxed bikes as explicitly cited by their website, but the racks are too small, you'll have to keep your box upright along the folding seats of the area reserved for handicapped people :(
-see STM website for more up-to-date info
How to fly with a bike with Air Canada?
Fixed 50$ fee no matter the destination
-you do NOT need to have a checked baggage included in your fare (for example, you can buy the cheapest economy fare type without any checked baggage, you will only have to pay 50$ for the bike, and not 50$ + whatever is the price for one checked baggage)
-before buying your flight you can call this number to see if there is room available for your bike box on a specific flight: 18882472262
-after buying your ticket, call the same number to tell them to reserve a place for your bike, if by bad luck there's no room you can always get a refund within 24h of buying your ticket -do your online check-in, available the day before your flight, indicate that you will be traveling with one bike and pay the 50$ fee
-once at the airport go to an Air Canada self check-in kiosk, click on the baggage options (I think it was called “modify baggage” even if you won't be modifying it), it should show you’re traveling with a bike, click to continue and it’ll print stickers for your bike box
-go to the oversized luggage area, they’ll ask you to open the box for them to check it and then they'll give you tape to close it
Open to hearing your experiences.
*All prices in Canadian dollars
TLDR:
Simplest reliable and affordable way to travel with a cardboard bike box to YUL is imo:
-bike/metro to Gare d’autocars
-buy 17.25$ bike box there
-take 11$ 747 bus to YUL
-pay airline-specific bike fee (50$ with Air Canada, no extra fee)

2024.05.18 02:48 that1sit Worth moving to QC from AB?

Considering to move to Montreal; in search of 1) better job prospects in the field of banking/finance/public service, 2) a more vibrant city with more history and lots to do.
Compared to Edmonton/AB, would you say Montreal has more/less ‘white collar’ jobs? Is there a major cost of living difference? Looking for insights on crime, homelessness, state of infrastructure/transport, etc. from a local. Edmonton is dull, run-down and mostly sad, hoping cities in QC are somewhat better? Have a degree in Econ/Fin. Not many employers want anything more than HS in Edmonton. Looking for an environment that’s more education/career-driven. Know basic French and am motivated to learn and achieve proficiency. Help please and thank you.
EDIT/UPDATE: Thank you everyone for taking out the time to share your stories, opinions, and experiences. I will spend more time to land on a decision. I do know I want an out from Edmonton; figuring out the ‘to’ is the challenge.

2024.05.12 13:49 AndyOfClapham STOCKHOLM - Line Layout Akin to City in Creative Mode

STOCKHOLM - Line Layout Akin to City in Creative Mode
Starting from Extreme Mode, in which I scored a lowly 650-ish, I tried an interpretation of the layout of Stockholm which depicts 4 primary lines, using similar colours to differentiate lines that branched. I used interchanges for branching and T-Centralen... one of the first shapes, usually triangle or square, on mainland.
The real Green Line starts to the west as a single commuter track, links to the Brown line at Alvik, goes through the town hall island, T-Centralen station, mid island & branches three ways in the south - this needs a second line to act as Green (I used teal).
Blue Line is a commuter service branching to two lines both going NW, starting at T-Centralen Station, via town hall island. It is depicted as closely as I can with a single line.
Red Line branches on each side. It 'turns' into the Lidingöbanan, a lightrail line going east (currently a bus service). I used pink for branching in the south but single track before as both 13/14 serve it, via T-Centralen & the mid island. Faded purple I used for the C to E line, same colour as the Lidingöbanan.
Brown Line connects all lines many times from S to W to NC, without it I would fail sooner!
Nb. I enhanced the colours to make the pink and teal lines more like red and green.

A little more context on the 6 week Adirondack Shutdown from ESPA
Looks like the track work is on the Canadian side. I wish they had planned ahead for this shutdown but good to know they are working on fixing the track.

2024.05.10 15:33 boutell New US and Canadian CCS chargers in April 2024

Here are all (*) of the new US and Canadian CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in April 2024, according to the Department of Energy. You can get the data yourself here.
These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:
  1. Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
  2. Leaf owners like me, owners of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and some owners of older cars that also use CHAdeMO. If you drive such a car, see my matching post in leaf.
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
There were 330 CCS charging stations with a total of 682 chargepoints added or refreshed in April 2024, which is a major uptick in both stations and chargepoints. There were only 166 new CCS charging stations in April 2023, with only 267 chargepoints. Things are trending dramatically upwards.
Some part of this is due to Tesla Magic Dock stations. Previously Tesla didn't report these to the AFDC as CCS, but now they do. And that makes sense because all CCS drivers can use them.
NOTE: most Tesla Superchargers do NOT have magic dock as of this writing (all those shown in this report should have it). I recommend using PlugShare to locate compatible stations for your vehicle.
(*) "What about other Tesla Superchargers? Can't everybody charge with NACS now?"
It's coming for many makes and models, and for newer Ford models as well as a few other manufacturers charging at v3 and v4 Superchargers is already an option with a free adapter from the automakers. GM should release their adapter in the coming weeks. But since they are not open to all CCS vehicles, this report is not the place for them. Tesla's app provides the best guide to their locations, including locations that work with non-Tesla vehicles.
Other Notes
To streamline this post, multi-chargepoint locations are listed with the number of chargepoints first.
For serious trip planning, I recommend PlugShare. But by all means check out these reported new locations and submit reviews on PlugShare, which makes things better for everyone.
If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, or just prefer not to check this list monthly when new openings are rare in your area, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications as soon as they open. You can sign up at evpov.com. Or not! I don't really have a business plan here, I built it to help EV owners like myself. PlugShare has a similar feature.

2024.05.01 08:01 coffeechap ParisTravelGuide's monthly thread - May 2024 : General Tips and Questions about the subreddit and Paris

Salut à tous & welcome to ParisTravelGuide
This monthly thread aims at giving basic recommendations to navigate the subreddit and Paris, and offering a general chatter space. Depending on the (inter)national news, we may inform you on impacting events here (strikes, threats, global cultural or sport events..)

USING THE SUBREDDIT

HANDLING THE BASICS OF PARIS

  • General understanding
  • Accommodations
    • Increase of the tourist tax for 2024: read carefully to avoid any bad surprises, especially for non-classified hotels that can apparently charge as if they were palaces due to a loop-hole.
  • Public transport
  • Taxis
    • public: G7 (en) is the only company recognized as public taxis in Paris. It applies fixed fares for travels between the two main airports (CDG and ORLY) and the two sides of the city (left bank / right bank of the Seine river), booking or extra services fees not included.
    • private: Uber are widely used, others are available like Bolt, Heetch, Marcel or Freenow
  • Day trip
    • the Trainline (en) is a very straight forward and efficient data aggregator from various European train and bus companies. (the national one sncf-connect being a bit of a nightmare to use)
  • Airports
  • Tourism Office:
  • Cultural/Event agenda:
  • Health:
  • thread for Protest and Strikes concerns
  • Eating
    • casual: David Lebovitz(en), a blog of a former US chef living in Paris for casual / traditional food
    • trendy: Le fooding(en), trendy reference magazine for foodies
    • starred: Michelin guide, for 1/2/3 stars restaurants or other gastronomic venues
  • Civil unrest
    • Sporadic and sudden protests are very rare. The existence of a protest is very regulated, the day and the route have to be agreed with the authorities several days prior to the date.
  • Authorized protest or march
    • a march usually lasts from 2pm to 6pm and most demonstrators stay until 8pm at the final destination
    • Demonstrators (and/or police) outbursts are more likely to happen at the end from 8pm
    • Most of the stores along the route close for the whole day, and side accesses to these boulevards are barred by the police to motorized vehicles.
    • 95% of the city goes on as usual in terms of street life.
    • Metro lines M1 and M14 are automated and thus operate whether there is a strike or not.
    • Taxis: all the companies work during a strike
      • G7: main company of the "Taxis parisiens", regulated price
      • UbeHeetch/Bolt/FreeNow: categorized as VTC ("Véhicules de Tourisme avec chauffeur"), unregulated price
  • Safety
    • Police department recommendations
    • Safety tips video by les Frenchies (experienced US travelers)
    • Density & safety level: Paris administrative area ("Paris intramuros") is fairly small for a global capital but the population density is very high. Besides that, Paris is currently the most visited city in the world. This situation inevitably leads to various problems or dramas from time to time and one should beware of this cognitive bias. No public statistics accessible, but Paris' safety level is said to be fairly comparable to other big Western metropolis like London, Rome, Barcelona, Brussels or NYC but lower than Amsterdam, Berlin or generally Scandinavian / Central / Eastern European cities.
    • Violent crime: it is very unlikely in inner Paris, European gun laws being much more restrictive than US laws.
    • Pickpockets & scams: while generally safe, you might be exposed to pickpockets, scams or harassment in crowded areas, be it touristic, commercial or nightlife hubs. Keep your belongings in sight and try not to display too much costly items. Avoid unsolicited street vendors (not to be confused with, say, street artists near Montmartre or "bouquinistes" of the quays of Seine) and the occasional street games like Bonneteau ("shell game") that are known scams.
    • Cat-calling: this is a common issue towards women in Mediterranean countries. In Paris, it is more prevalent in the more modest neighborhoods in the North / North-East- of the city.
    • Emergency: If you are in an emergency situation, call 17 (police) / 18 (firefighters but who also handles all life and death emergencies) / 112 (universal European emergency number). All of them are interconnected and will be able to redirect you to the correct one if you happen to pick the wrong one.
    • Neighborhoods:
      • Tourism is concentrated in the rich areas from the center (roughly arrondissements 1st to 8th + Montmartre 18th).
      • As in most cities, main train stations tend to attract more people from the outside, hence a bit riskier, especially at night and crowded metro lines serving the main landmarks
      • The northern outskirts of the city (around Porte de la Chapelle / Porte d'Aubervilliers / Porte de la Villette) are home of temporary refugee camps, a high poverty and rarely drug use in the open. It could feel quite unsafe at night, better be accompanied by locals if you want to venture around at night there or simply pass through.
      • The surroundings of the very central area of Les Halles (around the eponymous commercial mall) can be a bit messy at night as a lot of young people gather here for eating / drinking or hanging out in the streets. It is still home of great streets for night life like rue Saint Denis but beware of the crowds.
      • Also metro stations on line 2 Barbes, La Chapelle and Stalingrad and their surroundings are among the most modest and messy, with countraband cigarettes sellers and potential pickpockets.(currently there's a dramatically sad camp of young migrants from Afghanistan under the bridge of the metro station Stalingrad)
      • Southern and Western parts are more posh and family oriented but could be "less lively" than the rest of the city.

ONGOING EVENTS

  • Olympic Games preparation Impacts thread
  • Israel/Palestine conflict Impacts thread
  • Plan Vigipirate
    • Evacuation of public places in case of a left-alone bag for controlled destruction as what happened in the Louvre or Versailles recently. It also happens from time to time in subways.
    • Military patrolling in the city, mostly around landmarks, schools and religious buildings.
    • It doesn't mean there is a particular problem, but they take maximum precaution in these tense moments.

GENERAL CHATTER

The comment sections below is here for members to freely ask questions that are recurrent or not worth a dedicated post (like transport, safety or protests topics), write appreciations, greetings, requesting meetups...
Same rule applies as in the rest of the sub, post topics regarding Paris and its surroundings only please.
Bref, chit-chat mode is on in the comments!

US Embassy in Montreal- now what?
I received the attached email on April 23rd, and can see that my case is “in transit” to the Embassy in Montreal. At what point should I fill out the DS160? How do I pay fees? Does the embassy choose the interview date for me?

2024.04.26 15:39 wardXn Trip Report: 36 days across western Japan, Part 3 [as a solo traveller] – Kobe/Himeji, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Mie (day trips)

Day 19 – Kobe, Maiko Promenade, Akashi-Kaikyo Exhibition Centre/Bridge (Hyogo)
Made an early rainy start from Kinosaki Onsen towards Kobe via the limited express Hamakaze. As it was a very early departure (~0712), the owner kindly prepared my breakfast in a bento setbox which I was appreciative of, so that I can have my breakfast on the train. The ride down to Kobe took ~2.5 hours which was pretty long, though by starting the day much earlier, I maximize the amount of productive time I have for the remainder of the day. After dropping my luggage at the hotel, I made my way backwards to Maiko to visit the Akashi-Kaikyo Exhibition Centre which details the construction process in making the longest suspension bridge in the world [until recently]. Engineering folks would be interested in the details of maintaining such a bridge. Just beside the exhibition centre, the Maiko Promenade provides access a small section of the suspension bridge lower deck– it is really windy (and noisy with traffic rumbling above you) there!
The main item for the day was to join the Bridge World exhibit tour, which consist of a safety briefing, a site walk along the suspension bridge maintenance deck and taking a lift up to the bridge pylon i.e. the tallest point of the bridge. The entire tour costed 5k yen and took about 2 hours. Although the tour is entirely in Japanese (it is chaired by their own engineers), there is an English audio guide provided for you to explain certain aspects. My own opinion is that while the audio guide covers the main aspects, the extra tidbits/trivia mentioned by the engineers are not included (so its an added bonus if you have some Japanese listening comprehension). Also, you will need to be able to climb up some stairs so if you are unable to, you’ll have to give this a hard pass. The exhibit tour runs between April to end-November so you’re out of luck if you come during winter [I asked one of the staff why there was no session planned between December and March, and his response was that it was “too cold” to conduct said tour].
After the tour, I took a highway bus back to Sannomiya/Kobe. Incidentally, it was dinner time and a friend suggested that I try out Kobe beef since I’m already there. Although most steak establishments there require a prior booking ahead of time, I managed to find one named Mouriya that accepted walk-ins. In a word, it was delicious– a pain to the wallet at 12k yen no doubt, but its worth trying out at least once for the experience.
After dinner, I walked around the area on the way back to the hotel. To the hotel in question for the night, the La Suite KOBE which had a direct view of Kobe Harbor. One thing I have noticed while planning this entire trip is that there are very few 5 star hotels in Japan, and when I saw this and the offer price, I just decided to go with it just for the experience. After staying here for a night, I now understand what it takes to be considered as one, from getting a personal room tour by the hotel staff to extravagant room sizes to bottled ‘designer’ mineral water to jacuzzis. I must disclaim however, by saying that 3-stars hotels in Japan are typically very good for the value proposition. A great place to crash the night, if you have the money to splurge.
Day 20 – Kobe Maritime Museum, Himeji Castle/Koko-en (Hyogo), Minoh Falls (Osaka)
Breakfast at this hotel is done differently from other hotels – instead of a buffet spread, the hotel staff wheels a table directly to your room and you get to eat it in solitary peace – that certainly was a first for me. Before checking out, I made a stop at the nearby Kobe Harbour to visit the maritime museum and the earthquake memorial park . What I find surprising about the museum is that it wasn’t entirely about maritime/shipping/vessel stuff, instead, there’s one large section dedicated to Kawasaki [think bike/shinkansen manufacturer] and a special exhibit on Hatsune Miku. While I personally didn’t mind it I thought it feels like a misnomer to call it a ‘maritime’ museum. Spent about 3 hours at the harbor area. Kobe Tower was down for maintenance when I visited.
After checking out of the hotel I zipped over to Himeji, left my luggage at the JR station lockers and proceeded to explore Himeji Castle and Koko-en. There was a discount ticket set for both attraction so I went with that. Himeji Castle is pretty well documented here so I’ll just keep it short and say that it was worth the visit. Ditto for Koko-en in the autumn; both places took me just around 2.5~3 hours.
After that, I zipped down to Osaka via the Shinkansen, deposited my luggage at the hotel before heading over to one last destination – Minoh Falls. I have last visited this place years ago during the day and wanted to see for myself how the autumn illumination was like. To be frank, it was alright, though on reflection I feel it wasn’t fully worth the time to walk all the way to the falls (I clocked just north of 46000 steps which was one of the highest daily record).
Lastly, the hotel in question for the next 5 nights is the Vessel Inn Namba, a ~2 minute walk away from Dontonbori and Namba station (which I would argue is THE major transportation artery in Osaka beside Umeda). Although the room was rather small at ~14m2, for the pricepoint of ~9k yen/night and its convenient access to major transportation nodes I thought it was value for money.
Day 21 – Ise Jingu , Futamiokitama Shrine, Toba Aquarium, Mikimoto Pearl Island (Mie)
NOTE: Day 21, 22 and 23 utilizes the 5-day Kintetsu Rail Pass+ [=/= JR PASS] (which covers free bus services at Ise and Nara).
Day trip over from Namba to Ise. Took the first express train out of Namba at 0600 and arrived at Ise Station just after 0800. The overall routing was as follow:
Namba Station train to Ise Station bus to Ise Jingu Okage Yokocho bus to Futamiokitama Shrine bus to Toba Aquarium Mikimoto Pearl Island Shimakaze ride back to Osaka
Brief notes for the places as follow:
The final item for the day was to ride Kintetsu’s ‘special’ limited express Shimakaze back to Osaka-Namba. Seat was plush and extremely comfortable, though the main draw was the on-board café carriage which served food. I had curry for dinner and … it was alright; not terrible but nothing special to write home about. I suppose its more for the experience of dining on a train. Nevertheless, I enjoyed unwinding on my seat as the train whizzed past the countryside back to Osaka under cover of darkness. Booking a seat on the Shimakaze is competitive especially for the unobstructed first-row seats facing the conductor; you should book via the website immediately after reservation slots are open (a month in advance).
I wouldn’t recommend this day trip to first timers in particular, in large part because of the long travel time (~2 hours one-way with the limited express train to/from Osaka) as well as the multiple bus connections between destinations. It can be punishing if you do not time your bus connections well.
Day 22 – Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha (Nara), Uji, Fushimi Inari (Kyoto)
Spent the morning in Nara, afternoon at Uji and evening/night at Fushimi.
I had a pleasant time strolling around Kasuga Taisha in the morning just before 0800 which was near Todai-ji; it was a relatively quiet affair walking along the shrine. After that, a quick stroll over to Todai-ji. The crowd started to pick up pretty quickly after 0930 though so do arrive early to beat the crowd. The main temple itself isn’t large, but do cater for more time if you want to explore the surrounding temples and parks. Also, you could feed those deer crackers but they can be pretty aggressive so do mind them. I spent about 2.5 hours just walking around two aforementioned attractions.
After Nara, I zoomed up to Uji via the JR Nara line to explore Byodo-in and crossed over the Tachibana River to Uji Shrine and Daikichiyama Observation Deck. As the main attraction in Uji, Byodo-in was understandably the most crowded of all, but crowd management was done well and it didn’t feel as cramped as Kiyomizudera or other major hotspots in Kyoto. There was another separate queue to enter the temple building proper, but I wasn’t in the mood to queue so I just took some photos from the outside. Outside of the temple, I enjoyed viewing and purchasing some tea while walking along the Uji river, and making a short trek up to the observation deck to view the entire town.
Finally, I made an evening/night play for Fushimi. This would be my second return trip to here, and it was still an enjoyable hike up the mountain. Crowd is substantially lower compared to day time so I would propose putting this place as one of your last destination for the day. Moreover, as you make your way up the mountain to the top of the shrine, the crowd level does reduce considerably too. The view of the city from the mid-point was pretty nice. Paths are generally well-lit so there is no visibility concerns at night.
Day 23 – Arashiyama, Kinkakuji, Ginkakuji, Kyoto Manga Museum, Kyoto Railway Museum (Kyoto), Den Den Town, Abeno Harukas (Osaka)
An (almost) full day at Kyoto, with the night spent at Osaka.
With an early start at 0630, the routing for northern Kyoto was as follow:
0630 train from Osaka Arashiyama bus to Kinkakuji bus to Ginkakuji, Philosophers’ Path bus to Kyoto Manga Museum bus to Kyoto Railway Museum Aoniyoshi train ride back to Osaka at 1630
My personal pick would be the two museums unironically – those appealed to the kid in me.
The return trip from Kyoto to Osaka is done via Kintetsu’s Aoniyoshi sightseeing train which travels back to Osaka-Namba via Nara. Similar to the Shimakaze, the seats are extremely comfortable and faces towards the window, allowing you to just unwind and look outside. There is also a café carriage which sells rail merchandise and some sweets/desserts. I got myself a coffee and an ice cream sandwich which was great. For purchase of this sightseeing train, you can buy the limited express reservation on the Kintetsu website – demand for this is also quite high so book as early as you can. However, for solo travellers, you need to buy TWO limited express tickets –an adult seat and a child seat (at half price).
I was still feeling alright after lounging on the sightseeing train, so I decided to spend the remainder of the day shopping at Den Den Town for anime related stuff, as well as the nearby Abeno Harukas for the observatory point (Harukas 300). Personally, Den Den Town has that gritty, unfiltered feel to it which I loved. There was not much crowd at the observatory at night (~2040), and I was able to view the Osaka skyline unobstructed. Great place for couples hangout. Dinner was a pork tonkatsu by a chain restaurant named KYK within Abeno Harukas – it was delicious (at a hefty price tag of 3k yen)!
Just like the Mie day-trip, this routing is punishing with multiple buses to connect, destinations scattered across Kyoto, and a long walk (clocking north of 40k steps again) - I would not recommend this routing to first-timers. Moreover, this demands an early start – late end to the day which is not everyone’s cup of tea either.
Day 24 – Osaka Aquarium (Osaka), Kyoto Station (Kyoto)
This was my free day where I had nothing planned specifically, so I went to do some anime-related shopping at Kyoto Station in the morning where there was a pop-up Kyoto Animation store. I also shipped a package home via JPpost. I enjoyed wandering around Den Den Town and Taito Station, playing some of the arcade games. Lastly, I made a stop at the Osaka Aquarium – this was my second time here and I had a great time gazing at the mega fishtank in the middle which housed the whale shark.
---
If you’re still reading, thanks for powering through! Parts 2 and 3 took a while to write - I am not sure when (and if) I have the time to write on Ishikawa (Kanazawa, Noto Peninsula) and Tokyo/Chiba, but I would highly encourage visiting the outskirts in your return visits! Do let me know if there is anything I can do to improve the remaining write-up. Cheers!

2024.04.26 02:23 idkwhatever6158755 [TX] Boss filed a coaching review that was nothing but lies. What do I do?

It's hard to know where to even begin, this situation is toxic and weird. I take care of indoor plants for a living. I've been here six months. I have a unique situation within my company in that I have two direct supervisors. My *official* supervisor (I'll call her X) has been in the business for 40 years. She is a very straight forward person and has been nothing but professional. For 3 out of 5 days, I work completely alone. The other 2 days is one account, and I am with a partner that has 20 years experience. She and I have a really good working relationship and while I don't really believe in the whole concept of being friends with coworkers, she's as close to it as I've ever come. I promise this is important later.
The other supervisor (going to call her D) hates X and apparently me by extension. What's really weird is she loved me at first but I had questions about a decision a client made and ever since then she's just sort of been after me. I thought we had fixed things at least to a pleasant stand off, but apparently I was incorrect. She wound up working for me when I had some PTO (she didn't have to, I had arranged my route and worked a 50 hour week prior to make sure I would be available for those days. Whenever the supervisors work with or for us, they usually do a coaching/QC sort of deal. I've never gotten less than an 85 on any of these and I've had them on all of my accounts. Supervisor X is not a sugar coating type of person and I assure you that she is not interested in saving anyone's feelings if she thinks they are going to not do things correctly. So it's not because my primary supervisor loves me. I am good at my job. Today, I got the one back from when she worked for me. I expected it to be somewhat hyperbolic of my flaws because that's always how she does just in general. But she gave me a 50 and everything she said in it is either completely false or completely devoid of context.
She accused me of not treating certain plants for pests. I'm literally the only reason they have been treated. They are not responding to it because it was horrific infestation. Her and my coworker were doing what we call in this industry a "splash and dash" and not much else. This particular account falls under national security guidelines so getting chemicals in is a lot of work. I do this every week. We try to note everything we do in our service reports, but my coworker is responsible for those, not me. I do not have access to them at all. But it's stuff like this where I've literally been doing as instructed and she's saying I'm not doing it at all.
Her boss has lied to my face and thrown supervisor X and my coworker under the bus to protect her when she had her last go at me. So I have zero trust in him to handle it and at this point the woman has been so explosive and toxic towards me that I do not feel comfortable going to either of them, because they both sort of resent my boss. But I do not understand why the blatant lies. Why would I be doing so well on my other accounts but the two days a week I have someone watching everything I do, I just completely f off. But it's not true. Any of it. I use appropriate chemicals. I'm like the only person in our company who actually brings measuring spoons to make sure I do it correctly, and I've been watering in accordance with her wishes (which this account is weird because we do things very differently for this one account).
I guess I need to go to HR. I love my job. I'm getting pretty good at my job. I just want her to leave me alone. I don't know how feasible it is to just get me off of the accounts because literally no one else wants it. I do know I'm not the only tech that has issues with her, and she's done some other things that are wildly inappropriate but that I have zero proof of (my first time working with her and my coworker, when my coworker went to the bathroom she told me not to trust supervisor X)
I guess my question is, how do I refute this? What do I need to say to get HR concerned about this? I'm so exhausted by the drama. This woman is in her 60s and she acts like a 7th grade mean girl. And I do know the thing where she turned on me, but I don't think anyone would believe me if I told them because it's just next level silly. I do have a witness. My coworker won't lie for or on anyone. She also is pathologically conflict avoidant so she never will speak up, but she won't tell lies when asked. I also have some emails I've been sending myself of my interactions with her, since the last time she had a go at me. I have pictures that prove that things haven't been right with the plants shes accusing me of destroying since I started. I don't know if that matters. Please help. I'm so tired.

Montreal, Quebec--(Newsfile Corp. - April 24, 2024) - Amex Exploration Inc. (TSXV: AMX) (FSE: MX0) (OTCQX: AMXEF) ("Amex or the Company") is pleased to announce that after continuing to advance its geological understanding on the Perron Project, further drilling identified similarities between the Team Zone, 210 and E3 gold zones, therefore making it logical to combine the three. The consolidated gold zones will retain the name Team Zone, which creates one larger mineralized corridor straddling the Normétal fault on the northeastern side of the Beaupré Block (See Figure 1). The decision is geologically driven as all three zones display remarkable similarity in their lithologies, structures and mineralization style (Figure 5).
The Company is also pleased to announce further drill results from these zones (See Figure 4 and Tables 1 and 2). With up to 14 known zones across the Perron property, this decision will improve simplicity and will save time in the ongoing modelling process and drill data compilation.
Drill Highlights Include:
210 Gold Zone (which from now will form part of Team Zone)
  • PE-22-586 returned 11.50 m of 4.57 g/t Au, including 3.00 m of 10.72 g/t Au at a vertical depth of ~115 m in the 210 Gold Zone;
  • PE-23-639 returned 19.10 m of 3.23 g/t Au, including 1.40 m of 29.76 g/t Au at a vertical depth of ~190 m in the 210 Gold Zone;
Team Zone
  • PE-23-680 returned 7.30 m of 4.97 g/t Au, including 0.50 m of 54.12 g/t Au at a vertical depth of ~35 m in the Team Gold Zone;
  • PE-23-702 returned 2.10 m of 23.10 g/t Au, including 0.55 m of 83.98 g/t Au at a vertical depth of ~270 m in the Team Gold Zone;
Jacques Trottier, PhD, Executive Chairman of Amex Exploration commented, "The combination of these three gold zones is an important milestone on the Perron Project. As we've continued to add more drilling into this area and as our modelling work has advanced, it became clear that the three zone were geologically, structurally and spatially related. The larger consolidated Team Zone now covers a strike length of approximately 1.4 km and remains open to the northwest, southeast and at depth. Amex plans to add significant meterage to the Team Zone as we believe we have only just begun to unlock its value."

Qualified Person and QA&QC
Jérôme Augustin P.Geo. Ph.D., (OGQ 2134), an Independent Qualified Person as defined by Canadian NI 43-101 standards, has reviewed and approved the geological information reported in this news release. The drilling campaign and the quality control program have been planned and supervised by Jérôme Augustin. Core logging and sampling were completed by Laurentia Exploration. The quality assurance and quality control protocols include insertion of blank or standard samples every 10 samples on average, in addition to the regular insertion of blank, duplicate, and standard samples accredited by Laboratoire Expert during the analytical process. For all analyses targeting gold mineralization, gold values are estimated by fire assay with finish by atomic absorption. Values over 3 ppm Au are reanalyzed by fire assay with finish by gravimetry by Laboratoire Expert Inc, Rouyn-Noranda. Samples containing visible gold mineralization are analyzed by metallic sieve. For additional quality assurance and quality control, all samples were crushed to 90% less than 2 mm prior to pulverization, in order to homogenize samples which may contain coarse gold. The Qualified Person has not completed sufficient work to verify the historical information on the Property or neighbouring projects, particularly in regards to historical drill results. However, the Qualified Person believes that drilling and analytical results were completed to industry standard practices. The information provides an indication of the exploration potential of the Property but may not be representative of expected results.

2024.04.23 23:31 as_nadim 🔧🌟 Introducing the Apollo Certified Shop Program! 🌟🔧

Hey riders!
We're absolutely thrilled to unveil our latest initiative: the Apollo Certified Shop Program! This marks a significant leap forward in our ongoing commitment to providing top-notch service and convenience to our fantastic community of riders like you. Over the past year, we’ve been hyper-focused on our post-purchase support experience. While most of our posts tend to focus on customer experience, a huge part of scooter ownership is reliant on servicing. In this reddit post, last year, we asked our community which initiatives we should prioritize and the number one response was to secure more servicing partnerships to enable local repair. We surveyed customers on this initiative more specifically and saw that it was the #1 answer to what we should do more of and over 40% of respondents rated this as the most important factor of their scooter ownership experience.
In the past, we've worked closely with repair partners, but now, with the Apollo Certified Shop Program, we're taking it to the next level. What does this mean for you? It means a formalized process with our trusted partners, ensuring a smooth, hassle-free experience every step of the way. It also means quality repairs. All Certified Shops undergo rigorous training through our Apollo Certified Shop Training Course. This ensures that every repair done on Apollo Scooters meets our strict quality standards, giving you peace of mind with every ride. We also negotiated lower rates, post-service warranty periods, and faster turnaround times on any Certified Shop repairs to further enhance the servicing experience.
Servicing starts with diagnosing the problem. We’ve made it easier than ever to self-diagnose with our new and improved Servicing & Support Centre. We’ve also streamlined the process of getting in touch with our team through our updated Contact Us page. Once the issue is identified, you can get the right Spare Part Assembly you need, watch a video or follow our step by step guides to repair yourself, or hop on a video call to get some help from our tech team. If you’re not handy or if it’s too much of a hassle, our Certified Shops have all the tools to get your scooter turned around as quickly as possible, and often on the same day.
The repair videos we’ve created for our certified partners are also available to all of our customers via our Servicing & Support Centre. Our priority is your safety and to make riding your scooter the most enjoyable experience possible. We recognize that understanding how your scooter works, how to maintain it, and how to fix it when something goes wrong are critical components of the riding experience. These resources, coupled with our simplified spare part assembly strategy, can help turn some of the most complicated repairs into simple ones.
Our primary aim with this program is to provide all our customers with convenient local repair options, eliminating the hassle of shipping your scooter to us for repairs. Shipping scooters across the country to have them serviced has always been a hassle where no one wins (trust me, I know). Our riders are forced to pay out of pocket to ship scooters while also waiting weeks for a repair to be completed. Keeping the box is not a viable option for many customers either, and securing a box and adequate packaging to ship the scooter safely can be tough. Local repair options not only save you money, but also reduce the risks associated with shipping, such as lost shipments or damaged scooters.
So today I’m really (really!) excited to share this news with our riders in the US & Canada – we currently are partnered with Certified Shops in 27 locations across both countries! 🇺🇸 🇨🇦
Apollo Certified Shops can be found in the following cities:
We are actively working to expand the program so that all Apollo customers have a repair location within driving distance. Who knows, maybe soon we will be the biggest e-scooter servicing network in the world 👀
These initiatives reinforce our commitment to our customers throughout the entire scooter ownership journey, not just with pre-purchase support, but ongoing customer and product care. As long as you’re riding an Apollo scooter, we’re working to make every day feel like the first day.
Ready to locate your nearest Certified Shop? Check out our Service Locator.
And for more detailed information and booking, head over to our dedicated Certified Shop page.
If you are an electric scooter repair shop looking to join the team, you can submit your application here.
In the meantime, keep an eye out for more improvements to our support and servicing offering coming this summer, and ride safe! 🛴

Training

I've been running for a few years but am fairly new to racing. I went through my first marathon training block in 2021 only for it to get canceled and then ran my first marathon in 2022 though my training block got off to a rough start when I missed about 4 weeks due to Covid so my 3:45 felt somewhat lacking. So I thought I would buckle down in 2023 and really give it a go only to be continually frustrated by injuries big and small. I went through last winter training for this half marathon only to have a small heel injury pop up on my last long run, nothing to stop me from running but just enough to keep me from actually racing. I rolled that training over into a summer of Pfitz 18/55 for a fall marathon which was going great until I got a little too aggressive in a tune-up race and suddenly had all sorts of sciatic nerve problems completely shut me down for almost 2 months. So I spent the end of 2023 rehabbing and managed to get to 2024 feeling healthy for the first time since last September. I decided I would skip marathons this year and mix in some half marathons and maybe a 5k or 10k while trying to maintain volume.
I signed up for this race not even knowing if I would be able to do it because at the time I was stuck doing run walk intervals up to a max of 20 min but I wanted something to aim for so that was that. My main goal was to build back my base injury free more than anything so I chose to follow a coach Greg plan through Garmin with a time goal of my previous PB of 1:43. I had never actually raced a half before and my PB came on a 26k long run with 20k at marathon pace in the middle of my marathon training block on tired legs so even though my main goal was not to get injured, it didn't seem like I was asking too much of myself to go for a PB.
And honestly I felt like the training was almost too easy. Maybe it was because I was comparing it to the grind of marathon training but the garmin coach greg half training was all timed base with nothing more than 2h at easy or a 1h45 long run with 10 min at HM and 5 at 5k pace to finish. I think the biggest workouts were 45' at HM pace and an 8 x 800m at 5k pace with my biggest week volume wise being 70km with most weeks being somewhere in the 60s (though I did benefit from a handful of cross-country ski sessions this winter as well). Everything felt pretty smooth, nothing too crazy and I was hitting all of my targets to the point that I began to question my fitness in a bad way as in the training wasn't hard enough but seeing as my main goal was not to get injured I fought the temptation to push it and at most stretched out a long run or two with 15 or 20 min more easy pace.
I got through the last big week of the plan healthy only to arrive at one of the most stressful parts of the year at my job so I was actually more tired during the taper than I was during the training; had a few sleepless nights due to insomnia, was just generally stressed and tired from juggling the day to day. I tried my best to not let the lack of training get to me too much but I did push the last two long runs a bit further than the plan because they were only calling for 50 min easy and that just felt like overkill so I maybe stretched them out to 80 or 90 more to help relieve some of the stress from work than anything else. I did finally manage to get a couple of decent nights sleep towards the end of the last week but sadly the timing of my job will always be an issue for the spring and fall racing season so I guess its a good thing I am not running for anything other than the pleasure of it.

Pre-race

The 21km de Montreal is right off of downtown Montreal on an island in the middle of the St Lawerence River in Parc Jean Drapeau where they held the world expo back in 1967 and where the F1 circuit is currently located. Its a fairly popular race on the montreal running scene because its one the earlier events on the schedule and its really flat and fast. Getting there for me is an easy commute by metro so my plan was to either walk the 15 min to the nearest station from my house or to catch a bus if I was lucky enough at that hour on a saturday morning. Pre-race was pretty simple, the forecast looked pretty ideal, cool but not cold with sun supposedly coming out just before the start of the race. I woke up, started the day with the breakfast of champions: a couple of pop tarts, a PB toast and some coffee. Managed to take care of the toilet before I left the house which was great so I threw on my kit, grabbed my bag and huffed it out the door. No bus but the walk to the metro was nice, it was cool with a little breeze so it was promising to be a good day for running. Saw a few other people with running gear biking towards the station with their bag tags flying in the wind which started to build the anticipation. Other than a short wait for the next train, the commute was very uneventful and got to the race site about 40 min before race...only to get to the top of the stairs at the metro station to hear a hellacious wind howling outside. I hadn't thought about the fact that it could get much windier on the river and started getting nervous that I might be underdressed. Putting that out of my mind for a second I popped my pre-race gel and hung out inside the station for a few minutes before I decided to at least figure out the lay of the land and if it was too chilly I could always retreat back inside. Once outside it was "better" but there was definitely a pretty stiff wind coming off the water. I found the bag drop but paced around and put it off as long as I could knowing I would need to stuff my jacket inside so debated whether I should put on the long sleeve base layer I had in my bag that was supposed to be for post-race. I finally got the courage to go with my racing top knowing I would probably regret the long sleeves after once I was actually running and dropped my bag off with about 15 minutes before the start. I went through my speed drills half-heartedly as I was still anxious about the cold but mostly because the wind was threatening to blow my hat into the river but managed to get in a few strides and such and made my way to the corral with 5 or so minutes until the start. I was in the second corral so I made my way to the front and was happy to see I was standing right next to the 1h40 pacer(my plan was to start off a bit slower than 1h40 pace so there would be no problem there). Finding the pacer plus the crowd of people in the corral and the sun suddenly coming out made things just warm enough that my pre-race anxieties evaporated and just as it was time to race. It only being a half, fueling wise it was pretty simple, I took one Maurten 100 pre-race and was carrying another Maurten that I planned to take about half way and had 1 caffeinated Gu gel that I was only planning to use if I was feeling sluggish heading into the last 5km

Race

As I mentioned my plan was to start a bit slower that 1h40 pace so something like 4:50km for the first 4-5k and then move up to 4:44/km for the next 5 and then take stock at the half way mark and either push or try and maintain. When the second corral took off the 1h40 pacer took the lead. I didn't try and rush things but just kind of fell into pace just behind that group. Almost immediately there was a turn off the pavement onto a sort of utility road of packed earth and large pieces of gravel. The footing was kind of uneven, especially since there was still a huge group so I was almost as focused on footing as I was on pace. When the first KM clicked over on my watch it was bang on 4:44km so 1h40 pace, a little faster than planned but it wasn't like we had gone out crazy hot. I stayed with the 1h40 group but then the kms started clicking over a little faster with the next two being 4:40 and 4:39. This had me a little more concerned because I was really trying not to push the pace early. I eased back to 4:44 for 1 k and then the 5th was a bit down hill so it was another 4:40. I was basically just running with the 1h40 group but a pace that was just below and even though this was my goal I was both feeling good and not enjoying running in such a large group. At about km 7 I noticed another smaller group of about 4 runners just ahead and decided I would try and bridge the gap to them so cut my way through the front of the group and picked up the pace a bit to latch on to them. Even at the faster pace of the smaller group I was keeping my HR below my threshold of 160 and the kms were just flying by. Once I got to the half way point my confidence started to grow and I was able to start thinking about the next 10k a bit more strategically. I popped my gel decided I would push up to around 4:35/km for the next 5 and see where that would leave me. I hit KM 11 right at 4:35 and was both dropping the runners I had been with and starting to pick some people off with a rare person or two who was really pushing coming up from behind. Every time I passed someone I could just tell by their breathing vs mine that I was in good shape and I was really profiting from this mentally. I did have a bit of tightness pop up in my right achilles around 12 that got me nervous for a second but it never was anything more than that. At this point in the race we are actually running on the F1 track which is kind of cool, weird and boring all at once. Like if you like F1 I imagine its cool but considering we are on an island in the middle of the river, there are nicer views to be had than a bunch of grandstands and safety barriers. Right around KM 15 was a hard hairpin turn and once I came around that I am looking at the splits knowing my goal of 1h40 is well in hand but also wondering how well can I do and start thinking about it as a 5k(plus 1.1) and really start to push. A woman just in front of me must of had the same thing in mind because we both just sort of take off at the same time and we start passing people and km 16 clicked over at 4:28 only for there to be a sudden turn up a small hill with an aid station just at the top which slowed me down a few seconds but everything was feeling good until about 18.5km when we suddenly arrived back at that stretch of utility road from the beginning of the race. It was one thing running over it on fresh legs but it was completely different when your suddenly going for it in the last 3km of a half marathon and so I was suddenly a bit more winded than I would have liked seconds from the previous km but once we were back on actual pavement I was able to regain my form and pace and get over that mental hurdle. I just kept doing the mental math, telling myself I had x min plus at this pace and kept thinking about the 5 minutes of 5k pace at the end of my long runs during training. There was one last water station at about between 19 and 20 and I grabbed some water more to just get some moisture in my mouth than from actual thirst and then it was on. There was one guy who was about 100m in front of me coming out of the station who I kept focus on but couldn't seem to catch even though I was passing people left and right. I managed to pull even to him at the final hard turn with about 200 meters to the finish line. With the line in sights I put it into 5th gear and went for it and I could see out of the corner of my eye the guy in black was doing everything he could to not let me pass him but I had another gear that he just couldn't reach and crossed the line both ahead of him almost 2:30min faster than my goal time.

Post-Race

Nothing too exciting, grabbed some of the food and drink offerings and started to rehydrate/fuel. The sun was out so I found a nice piece of grass with a view of the river to stretch out on and change into some dry clothes. Enjoyed the view for a bit and walked around just to keep the legs moving and then made my way to the metro station. Went home, had some lunch, took the dog for a walk and chilled out on the couch until I sadly I had to go into the office for a few hours(like I said, its peak season). Going to ease back into some training this week as there is another half in the eastern townships close to where my girlfriend's parents live that I may want to give a go mid-june and as I am feeling good from my accomplishment I want to try and build on the fitness and see if I can shave a couple more minutes off(my garmin race predictor was telling me I was in 1:36 shape which I was highly skeptical of but now think was closer to reality than I would have thought pre-race). I, as do many others, have a longer term goal of getting to that 3 hour marathon mark but thats a ways off and for now I am better served stacking some of these smaller blocks for halves together, slowly increasing my volume and keeping up the strength training that helped me during my rehab last year.

2024.04.20 11:01 Yas-Rutabaga4835 M. HIGGS and Service Nouveau-Brunswick dosn't want me in his province!

I've recently move, the 8 december 2022 in Newbruswick my home province from Québec. I've apply to get my Medicare and my license since then! I've made 5 visite to service Newbrunswick.....did 30 phone calls. Service Newbrunswick said that i cannot receive my license and that i needed to contact SAAQ to resolve this issue. SAAQ told me that there was nothing wrong and that Service Newbrunswick should gave me my license...it did not work!
So since i dont have a NB license, my car assurance cut me off and fine me a 1500$ fee for breaking my contract....after 1 year i contacted the RCMP to see if they could find my perfect ABSTRACT drivers profile, they tell me that its because i have a unpaid ticket.
It took one year to get a temporary medicar number, so i had to pay my medication adding up 600$ that should of been covered by my provincial medicare! I'm still waiting for my real medicare card. Since i'm only aloud to visit emergencys at hospital with my temp medicare.....
So SAAQ have no clue about my unpaid ticket .so i called the SPVM who tells me i have un unpaid parking ticket in Montreal that i receive the 23 of july 2023...when i was already in Newb! Plus the 80$ fine went up to 250$ since i was late paying that bill. Its imposible to talk to anyone that could cancell the ticket. The only way to contest it is by showing up to Montreal to ask for a court date to contest, and then show up in court in Montreal in the next 5 to 8 month it takes to book this sort of appointment. So I paid this stupid ticket and service Nouveau-Brunswick cannot find my profile and still tell me to call SAAQ.......!!
I did not drive my car for one year wich in rural NewB is making me a total hermit! thank god that the good weather is comming! I'm wondering if its because i'm a francophone or if its because i come from Québec province, even tho i was born in Quispamsis.
The medicare Newb lady told me when i ask her why it took so long to get my Newb medicare: - well we don't give medicare to anyone specially since you could move back anytime.....
WHAT COULD I DO TO IMMIGRATE TO MY HOME PROVINCE? HOW CAN I OBTAIN MY DRIVING RIGTH???? His this how Higgs save money? Newbrunswick feels like the States Jonhy Oliver talked on last week tonight about bureaucraties made to take away medicares to safe money!
I really feel like a criminal and rejected by my New-Brunswick institutions! And i'm being fined for not having my provincial papers!.... after 1 year 6 month i need to register my Camper...but i can't cuz i need my license....this is RIDICULOUS!
DOES ANYONE GOT ANY SUGESTIONS?

2024.04.18 00:06 raincoastguy HELP 911 dispatching training questions

So I currently sign up to be a 911 dispatcher in BC. After some research I’m trying to find some help as to where I’ll be training. I’m just confused as to where I need to be
Currently live in surrey and I don’t have the luxury of moving due to family matters( I have a sick family member ) now from what I understand we have 18 locations as to where the communication centre are.
St. John's, NL Charlottetown, PE Dartmouth, NS Fredericton, NB Montreal, QC Ottawa, ON Winnipeg, MB Regina, SK Edmonton, AB Red Deer, AB Kelowna, BC Surrey, BC Courtenay, BC Prince George, BC Whitehorse, YT Yellowknife, NT Iqaluit, NU
Now I found that the Centre (PRTC) in Chilliwack is a facility where training is provided.
I’m curious is it possible to train at the surrey location instead of the chilliwack location.
Does anyone know how long the training will take if I pursue this career?
I’m in the beginning stage and my zoom interview is coming up next month. I’m just trying to get myself ready for what I’ll need to do
Any help would be great! Thank you.
