Looking for different places with high protein/low carb options. My usual go-tos are:
Chipotle/Qdoba (burrito bowl/salad, no rice)
steakhouses
Fish Peddler
Ivar’s (grilled fish Caesar, hold the croutons)
Carne Aqui
Anthony’s
Red Robin / Blazing Onion (lettuce-wrap burgers, salads with stuff)
Loose Wheel (Saturday NY Strip steak night!)
Mexican seafood places (ceviche, aguachile, shrimp sixteen ways)
Red Lobster (grilled or broiled, staring longingly at everyone else’s cheddar bay biscuits)
Anyone got any other Pierce County gems they enjoy?

2024.05.15 21:55 EatinSLOCal Taqueria Santa Cruz Express 2 - Review

Taqueria Santa Cruz Express 2 - Review
Background:
A decade ago, SLO wasn’t really the place to get great Mexican food. We were still in our sit-down Tex-Mex era and I would frequently head out of town to get tacos. And then I learned about the SoCal Burrito (the one with fries in it) and the ultimate SoCal-Mexican Food Fusion (at the time) the Carne Asada Fries, and there was a new place in town that had these items along with a large (for the time) list of taco meats including buche and lengua, and that place was Taqueria Santa Cruz Express.
Chips & Salsa Verde
Setting:
📍862 Foothill Blvd, San Luis Obispo, CA 93405
Taqueria Santa Cruz Express 2 is located between Milk-In-It and Dominos on Foothill. It is the second SLO location of Taqueria Santa Cruz Express (the other location being on Monterey in with Papa Thai and Nobu Hawaiian BBQ. Inside is some long high top bar seating on both sides of the restaurant with two digital ordering stations at the front and an in person register at the counter. They have a chip and salsa bar that is self service. Taqueria Santa Cruz Express 2 is open Monday – Thursday 9 AM – 10 PM, Friday – Sunday 9 AM – 11 PM.
Lengua Spider Tacos
Menu/Selection:
Burritos – Super Burrito, 49ers, Burrito Bowl, Bean & Rice, Breakfast Burrito, California Veggie, California, Bean Cheese & Rice, Chimichanga, Regular Burrito, Veggie Super, and Bean & Cheese. Combo Plates – 2 Taco Plate, Taco & Enchilada, Tostada, Fajitas, 2 Enchilada, Order of Meat, Carne Asada, and Shrimp Combo. Quesadillas – Meat, Loaded, and Cheese (Corn or Flour Tortilla). Nachos – Nacho Fries, Veggie Nachos, and Super Nachos. Torta – Regular Torta. Tacos – Taco Dorados, Taco Salad, Veggie Taco, Spider Taco, and Soft Taco. Specialty – Carne en su Jugo (soup). Meat Choices – Carne Asada, Pastor, Carnitas, Chile Verde, Chorizo, Grilled Chicken, Shredded Chicken, Barbacoa, Birria, Buche, Lengua, Cabeza, Tripa, Fish, or Cameron.
Carne Asada Nacho Fries
What I Had:
I had two Lengua Spider Tacos and Carne Asada Nacho Fries. The Chips & Salsa Verde were good in my book, they're the kind that are fried in house and don't go stale, but they do get cold sitting there., but the salsa verde slapped with a fair amount of spice. The Lengua Spider Taco is beef tongue with a base of cheese topped with pinto beans, onions, cilantro, and salsa. Lengua is one of my go to taco meats and they do it well here, resulting in a tender, falling apart beef flakes of tongue. That being said, I should have paired the Spider Tacos with something bolder as the Lengua gets lost amid the pile of pinto beans, onions, and cilantro, it was hard to even taste the cheese. Regardless, they were delicious. The Carne Asada Nacho Fries is seasoned steak atop French fries topped with melted cheese, refried beans, sour cream, and guacamole. I like the choice of fries for these nacho fries, as traditionally you see crinkle cut, but here they used a thinner, beer battered style fry, which was able to hold up to the toppings well. The cheese, when melted sunk in between and below the fries creating a web of fries when it cooled down. It’s kind of hard to separate the fries from each other, especially with the flimsy plastic forks they have, but once you’re eating it, it’s delicious. The carne asada is seasoned well and the toppings all meld well with the rest of the dish.

Would I Have It Again:
Sure. I was surprised to find them open so late on a Sunday (good to file away for later). I know Santa Cruz is a Bay Area city, but they do good SoCal style Mexican food. Also the staff is super nice because even though I ordered through the machine, the guy at the register called me over to give me a bag to get chips and salsa with. So with all of this in mind, Taqueria Santa Cruz Express 2 gets an Eatin’ SLOCal Rating of – Take-Out Now!

2024.05.15 00:19 Notactuallyashark Ragnar Zion Trail: Review and Recap

Ragnar Zion Trail: Review and Recap
I’ve seen some posts over time regarding Ragnar trail races and thought I’d give an overview of my experience! My team and I just finished the Ragnar Trail relay race outside of Zion National Park this past weekend. This was my first Ragnar. Warning: this post is going to be very long.
Basic Race Overview: Ragnar trails are relay races in which a team of 8 (or 4, if you want to do double the amount of loops with half the time of breaks in between) runs from a central campsite through a series of loops. After start, one runner is always out on the course until everyone has done all of their loops.
For Ragnar Zion, we each ran 15 miles (for a team total of 120 miles). Each one of us had to run three loops: - Green Loop: 4 miles, ~300 ft gain - Yellow Loop: 4 miles, ~650 ft gain - Red Loop: 7 miles, ~ 950 ft gain
Each loop begins from same location which is close to the campsite.
Preparation : Full disclosure, I was not team captain so I don’t have specific logistics of the sign up process. 8 of us signed up January. We had members from 3 different states and 1 from Canada. Some of us were avid runners, others ran a few 5ks before the race. I am a frequent runner and was running 15-20 miles per week mostly on trails. I didn’t do any specific training plan, but I never have even when prepping for a half marathon, etc. I don’t consider myself very competitive and all of us really just wanted to finish and have fun.
Getting there/setting up: for this race Ragnar rented out Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort. The race begins on Friday morning, but the campsite opened at noon Thursday. Our car got there around 4:30pm Thursday which I’m very thankful for: there were very few campsites left in the trees. There was also a “field” area without shade coverage at the ranch but we wanted the more authentic camping experience in the trees.
You dropped your stuff off and were able to load it into a carriage of sorts (meant for horses) to pull up to your campsite while the driver took the car to the parking lot and took a shuttle back. I will say this process was EXTREMELY streamlined and easy, which was a definite theme the entire time during this race.
I should note there was also a “glamping” option in which there was already tents set up for you with electricity, etc. but our group didn’t go for that as most of us were very happy to be camping.
The Resort: Zion Ponderosa Ranch was beautiful and extremely well maintained. There was a pool and a hottub available for use and neither were ever very crowded. There was a couple actual restroom facilities that were extremely well maintained, both near each area to camp. Showers were in the same buildings and warm and free. It was advertised that there was rock climbing but nobody appeared to be doing it all weekend.
There were a multitude of food options; we tried the Mexican food truck and it was legitimately the worst Mexican food I’ve had in my life, but had burgers that were being grilled outside and they were decent. My friends had the pizza inside the lodge once and it took forever to get to them but it was also good. Beer was available from the lodge and also they had a brewery with a stand with draught beer that was awesome, but I forget the name.
The Expo: Tons of awesomeness here! Lots of free swag including nutrition, insole demos, physical therapy assessments and free taping, massages, chirp wheels, hot water and coffee, s’mores…live music, movies. The village was small but definitely effective. There wasn’t campfires allowed in campgrounds however there were bonfires scattered around the resort. Unfortunately no show demos this race though I’ve heard at others there are. Also a store selling Ragnar swag and Zion stuff available to purchase at the lodge.
Race Logistics: And now to the good stuff!! In order to get an accurate estimate of time, the team submitted our 10k road race paces. We ranged from 7:00 to 11:30 miles, most of us clustered around 10:00. Ragnar calculates that pace, bumped up due to trail conditions, to give you a start time for runner #1 and about when each consecutive runner will start. I will say we ended an hour and 45 minutes early so we had to actively estimate when to be ready ourselves! We started at 10:30 AM but the slowest teams started around 6:30 AM I believe and the fastest at 5:00 PM!
When your team’s current runner is a quarter mile from the end of the loop, your team name will be displayed on a screen near the start line to alert you to send your next runner to the transition tent to exchange the bib and belt. This was a very streamlined process also.
The Course: The course was made up of 3 loops. I was assigned as runner #6 of 8, because I wanted to do red-yellow-green. All three loops zigzagged through rocks, sand, and dirt with a couple road crossings. No water crossings. Mostly rocky not a lot of roots, but some. EXTREMELY well marked even in the dark. The trails never felt congested though you always saw other runners. Single tracks in spots, dirt roads in others. Everyone was extremely polite and encouraging. There were photographers posted during the daytime in spots.
  • Green Loop: 4 miles, ~300 ft gain. I ran this one last at 9:30 AM. Finished 47:17 for a 11:54mi average pace. Grassy and very nice rolling hills! This was my second favorite loop but I was very tired by then.
  • Yellow Loop: 4 miles, ~650 ft gain. I ran this one at 11:30PM, and I was the lucky runner who got poured on. Finished 56:55 for a 14:20mi average pace. I was tired and cold so I walked a lot in the dark. This route was very sandy and very very steep in sections but once over the major hill was extremely fun. It was cool to see headlamps in the distance on the red loop too. My teammates said it has nice views!
  • Red Loop: 7 miles, ~ 950 ft gain. I ran this one first at 3:30PM. Finished 1:27:07 for a 12:05mi average pace. Man, I loved this loop. Hilly at first but once I got past that it was a trail runner’s paradise. Very cool sweeping views of Zion vistas as you run along a ridge. Fabulous.
Overall, I was a bit disappointed with the scenery. It was pretty but mostly grass and light shrubbery with distance views of canyons. If you haven’t been to Zion, it did not even close to compare to what scenery is around. However I liked the routes themselves from a runner’s perspective, except yellow, but it was wet and sandy and steep AND dark.
The Finish Line: This part was cute. Most teams ducked into the course at the last moment to finish with their last runner. The medals they gave were wooden plaques and pretty cool, and the backs of them lined up together among your team to say “120 ish miles together, a relay good time”. We also got cotton tshirts included that had a cool Ragnar Zion graphic. A bit bummed we didn’t get athletic shirts as my captain had said she got at a different race before. I was able to exchange my small shirt for a larger one.
Overall Impression: I mean, I LOVED doing this. The vibes were absolutely immaculate; it was truly an all-ages, all-sobrieties, all-abilities type event. The grounds were kept extremely clean and everyone was respectful at camp, and super friendly out on trail. It truly was a well oiled machine, you can tell Ragnar has the experience to put on this type of event successfully. It was exhausting and exhilarating. The only cons were how cold it was, particularly at night (around 40 degrees) and I wish the scenery reflected the beauty of the area a bit more. I would 10/10 do another Ragnar Trail, but I don’t think I’d do this one again (generally not a repeat course runner though).
If you read all that hopefully you got some good information! Feel free to ask any questions!

2024.05.14 23:03 lexgowest Can you help me find my solo dining spot in East SJ

Must haves: - A bar I can sit at - Beer on tap - Good food - In East San Jose
Nice to haves: - Great Mexican/Latin food - Open after 9 - Moderate noise ambiance - Alum Rock-ish area
I checked out Cielo bar and grill, and it's almost perfect, but I can speak enough Spanish (yet) to make it a comfortable experience. Also a bit loud for my taste.
When I lived in the lower East Bay, I liked Mexico Típico was perfect for me.

Does my city just really suck or is Waffle House this bad?
My fiancé begged me to take her there last week. We were one of two active tables, the waitress got our orders. My fiancé got an all star with over easy eggs I got a city ham, egg, and cheese melt with double hash browns with onions and ham. Three times the waitress came back to our table asking me what I wanted in my hash browns the first time saying “Mushrooms right?” After the third time I asked her to check the ticket that had our orders because it was at the grill station just sitting there.
My fiancé got her food with scrambled eggs so they got sent back, she later returned with another plate of scrambled eggs and we just looked at her like “🧐”. Third time was the charm and they were still over cooked.
Eventually my plate got to me and I was given single hash browns with cheese and my melt was missing the egg. I just laughed and said “Wow!”.
Remember now we were one of TWO tables in the otherwise empty restaurant at 6pm.
We just finished our food, got up to leave, I still tipped $5 because hey I turned 30, my life is changing and I’m trying to be more understanding. The waitress didn’t even wait till we walked out the restaurant to loudly exclaim how unhappy she was with the tip amount. I’m a very angry Slavic person so restraining myself ended with that right there. I turned around and explained the amount of times the order was wrong and STILL was wrong in the end and that she’s lucky I paid that after a $30 half burnt meal.
(half my irritation is my fiancé knows I’ve worked the food industry for years and I had two specialties steak and breakfast. I could have cooked her food exactly how she liked it at half the price but she wanted me to take the night off cooking since I just got off a long shift.) My fiancé ended up with violent food poisoning that required her to go to the hospital and miss work for a week so needless to say she said “you’re right we should have gotten Mexican.”.

Campuzano Mexican Grill in Dallas submitted by crimsonandbrown to Dallas [link] [comments]

2024.05.13 16:21 OverFaithlessness606 Advice needed

I, Female (34) have been together with my husband, male (39) for almost 10 years, married for 8. His mother has always said hurtful and mean things to him, or to me, or acted very obviously that she does not like me - even before I met her.
We had always lived somewhere else, until 2 and a half years ago, moved to the same state they live in, due to my husband's job. She kept acting the same, if not worse. This time not just to me, but also to the kids.
Originally from Mexico, the tradition is that mother and daughter get ready together prior to the wedding (hair & make up), our wedding was petit committee, we did not have a lot of money back then, especially after going through the immigration process and fees to get my permanent residency.
Wedding was at the end of October, that summer, my father in law got laid off and even though we hadn't asked for their financial help for the wedding (we weren't going to anyway), my MIL called and said, sorry we cannot help. (?)
The day of the wedding, I went to a grocery store to get a bouquet of flowers, went back to the cabin to start getting ready, the hair and make up lady arrived and started working on me, my MIL nicely offered to put together my bouquet so I accepted and appreciated it. When I was done with hair and make up, it was my mom's turn. MIL said 'bouquet is ready on the table' and left. Did not think anything of it.
During our honeymoon, my husband told me that his mother, went to see him to the cabin where he was getting ready and she made a scene asking him if he was sure he wanted to marry me because I was the most selfish person she had ever seen. He had to spend a while trying to calm her down while I waited for him for our photos.
This upset me, because it made me realize that the feeling I had about her wasn't wrong, and a lot of things she had said and done up to that point finally made sense.
Although it did not affect me because like I said, we never lived close up until a couple of years ago, and everything turned about her, making her happy, complying with her rules, she does not respect my (our) parenting and does whatever she wants with my children whenever they are around them.
I celebrate Mexican Mothers day which is ALWAYS on May 10th. So on Friday my husband got me a weighed blanked that I have been wanting for a while, and said happy mothers day and said sorry I was writing you a letter but did not finish. Then we went on to find my favorite taco truck before we picked up the kids in the afternoon.
Yesterday, American's mothers day, MIL had planned a get together at a park to grill burgers and hang out. Cool. The thing is, I am working full time and I am in Grad school (both decisions made because my husband pushed me to do something for myself and said he would be 100% supportive). I had a lot of homework to get done yesterday, among other household chores I haven't kept up with lately.
On saturday, I took all day to work on things around our farm. It was hard work and overwhelming. I also reached out to him calmly and told him I wasn't comfortable going to the mother's day gathering, I wasn't comfortable being around his mother or his family in general for that matter. They have all excluded me from communications and pretty much it feels like I am not welcomed around them. I also had a lot of homework so I asked him to understand my position, that I didn't have to go, he could go with the kids. And he said I HAD to go, that it was only going to be 1.30hr max 2. Well it ended up being 5 hours away from home.
Before we left, he yelled at me in front of the kids, because I said, this is not about me it's about your mom, she is not my mom and I really don't have to go. He called me names, he said that I always complain about working, getting things done, that I don't do anything around the house and that I was the most inconsiderate person that it is all about me. Then when we were on our way to the park, stopped at a store to get burger patties, and he Yelled at me - in front of the kids and the whole store! that We should separate, that I am the one that has been pushing for this and that he is done with me, we will sell the farm and the other house and everything.
All this time I was crying and crying, I could not believe he was saying and doing this, especially in front of the kids, even though it wouldn't be the first time he's reacted like this.
I don't have any real friends here, I live far from my hometown in Mexico and I feel like he is being abusive emotionally and gaslighting me. I'm hurting, I don't deserve this, neither do my kids. I am not saying innocent at all, but I truly feel that I cannot talk to him because he gets angry or wants to change me to be a certain way that he would be able to deal with (?). I am scared of reaching out to him with personal feelings because of his reactions. He told me yesterday that he was done with me because he believes I am never going to change. Every time we argue he says I love you BUT __________. Really? Love should not be conditional like that.
I have a history of anxiety and depression, I started therapy a while ago along with meds and it's been a tremendous help.
Kids are Boy 16, Girls 6 & 4
Any advise? Suggestions? I'm truly heartbroken and don't know how to fix this.
TL;DR! - Marriage emotional abuse

2024.05.13 03:38 deadhead4077 1st time beef cheeks!!!

1st time beef cheeks!!!
1st time smoking beef cheeks about 3lbs, only 2 whole cheeks and a half sized one, the rest were scraps I pilled together, came out great! Super tender and moist. New fav, way easier and less commitment than a brisket for a single guy! Apple wood on my little offset, 275 for 3 hours then boated them in guiness extra stout another 3 hours. Wrapped the top in foil and in the oven another 2 hours till they read 207 f. Let em rest in the liquid and stored in it too. Beef ribs were done after 6 hours in smoke, 1 hour wrapped in the oven 275. Demolished before I got a finished picture lol
