This is the final arc! Yippee, hooray, and other such exclamatory remarks. Will Billy finally get to have a well-deserved rest? Is his mental health ever going to recover? There’s only one way to find out.
The first arc is here.
The second is here.
And the third is here.

Memory Transcription Subject: Billy Marsh, Human Trash
Date [Standardized Human Time]: March 26, 2142
There was a parade on the main street, meant to honor everyone who fell during the war against the Federation. Some cheered, some cried, some just smiled and remembered. It was a day of remembrance, but also healing, of recognizing the past and moving forward from it. It was another one of the many holidays that had come about as a result of the war, another day of connecting to others who had experienced tragedies during the first eight months that Humanity existed on the galactic scene.
And where was I? Sitting in a shitty apartment, drinking myself to death trying to forget. How ironic.
It had been like this for about a year now. The military was the only thing holding my life together, once my contract was up and they didn’t accept my reapplication I knew it was over. They set me up with an apartment, some benefits for my service, and a job, thinking I could handle it from there. I couldn’t, and now I’m jobless, benefitless, and rotting in a cheap apartment. All it took was one year for me to ruin it.
I lifted the bottle, not even tasting the foul Venlilian alcohol anymore. It didn’t matter what it tasted like, all that mattered was it let me forget. I couldn’t live with the memories, but every part of me reminded me of them. My arm, my legs, my scars, my face, my eyes, not a single cell of my body was without memories. I’ve tried to tear out my bionics more times than I can remember now, but for some reason, I always stop just before they finally release their grip on me.
I went back for another drink. I had pushed everyone away from me, they shouldn’t have to worry about me. I had bothered them enough already, taking up time they could be used for better things. Why should they spend their time trying to help a piece of trash like me? They shouldn’t, they just didn’t realize it, so I decided for them. I acted angry and distant, but switched my attitude on a dime when I was visiting my assigned therapist. No one should have to worry about me, I didn’t deserve their concern.
I lifted the bottle again, but stopped as I realized it was empty. I check the floor around me, finding countless more empty bottles before finally sighing and standing from my seat. I slogged my way to the kitchen, only to find all of the reserves there dry as well.
I didn’t have the mental energy to slam the door, though if I did I would most likely rip it off its hinges with my bionics. Instead, I just left it open, like a trap without any bait. I’d get the bait soon, but first I wanted to at least look Human. I didn’t want anyone else to have to deal with me, they had their own busy lives and didn’t want to deal with some drunkard veteran, so I’ll at least try and cover the stench of booze with some cheap body spray.
I stepped out of the apartment looking, smelling, and feeling like shit, because I was, but not enough of a shit to make people care. I just looked like someone who didn’t know how to take care of themselves, not a veteran who is contemplating suicide.
I winced as the sun hit my eyes, a throbbing hangover barely held back by the over-the-counter headache meds I had been religiously taking every day. I barely ate food anymore, just ibuprofen and alcohol. It was all I needed, it’s not like I moved around anymore. I only walked to the fridge, to the store, and back to my seat. I didn’t mind it, I deserved it.
I blocked out the festivities around me as I entered the liquor store, a new one this time. My last one had cut me off for clearly drinking too much, all that succeeded was making me walk a little more. I gathered the highest-proof drinks I could find and made my way to the counter.
As the cashier rang me up, she tried to make small talk. “So, you’re a fan of the alien stuff. Couldn’t get into it myself, too strong.”
I didn’t respond, earning me an awkward sigh from the clerk. She finished scanning all of my items without another word, not even asking for me to pay as I placed my card on the counter before she could ask.
I picked my drinks up and headed for the door. She tried one more time to get me to speak. “Have a good day.”
I paused for a split second, before stepping out fully and letting the door close behind me. I wanted to explain to her exactly why I was never going to have a good day again, but then I would be making my problems her problems. I’ve caused enough problems for enough people, I’m done with that.
Once again, the streets and buildings passed in a blur and only began to retake shape once I was in my apartment. I stepped inside and dumped everything on the counter before I shut the door. I didn’t bother locking it anymore, no one was going to rob my home unless they were looking for empty bottles or cans. I took what I wanted and stuffed the rest into the fridge, now to return to what I was doing.
I sat in the stained, dented, misshapen, and honestly ugly chair and popped the tab on the first drink. I took two deep gulps before returning to staring at the wall in front of me. The day continued like that for an unknown amount of time, all the way until the sky began to glow orange and festivities were finally dying out.
With another empty bottle in hand, I looked out of the singular window in my apartment. In a flash, memories came rushing back. Memories of the Cradle, of my naivety and ignorance of just how the universe worked, of how cruel and unjust it was, and how idealists were chewed up and spit out.
Next, the Battle of Earth appeared in my mind. I had become much more cold, but I still cared enough to be considered Human. I could vividly remember the clean, metallic halls of the Federation bomber as we rushed down them, and also the stale smell of the cabin in the woods. I tried to hate the aliens that were occupying the cabin with us, but deep down I wasn’t that kind of person. In the end, I became that person.
Then I thought of Sillis and the constant rain making even our water-resistant suits damp. Those were the last days I could call myself something resembling a Human. I was consumed by hatred, but there was still something left deep down. Even if I acted distant, I still cared. I tried to hide it, but I couldn’t fight my nature. That was until I lost everything.
I took another deep drink from the bottle, trying to fight the memory of my allies. But they wouldn’t leave, they clawed their way to the front of my mind. I missed them, I missed them so much my heart broke. I failed them all, they all died because of me.
If Owen and Brandon were here, they would be talking about the weather or their favorite sports team while Ryan and Joshua shot jokes at each other about anything they could think of. James would be silent but not absentminded, listening intently even if he wasn’t looking at the conversation. Even Ueli would be grumbling along as we made the motions through the street, putting up a front of anger to hide his sorrows.
Gabriel and Jared, the two brothers would be comforting each other, supporting one another through hard times while Valya would be stoically listening to Jack and Teguh argue back and forth. Of course, Max and Sam would be shaking their heads back and forth as the argument grew louder and louder.
Blake would be making constant sarcastic remarks to every joke Kelly told, and the duo constantly playfighting with one another. Liam and Simmons would be checking their equipment, meticulously reviewing every aspect countless times to ensure everything was as it should be. And of course, Cody would be chatting it up with me, pointing out little details in the environment to comment on.
Before I knew it, I was crying. Alone, in a dim apartment, drinking poisonous alcohol, I cried my eyes out. I slid out of my chair and curled up in a ball on the floor, trying to comfort myself but only ending up making myself look more pitiful. I was Human trash, lower than even the germs and mold growing in the corners of my house.
This needed to end. I had been rotting in this room, gorging myself on liquor for far too long. I was just sucking up air, giving nothing in return. I’m a fucking parasite, and there’s only one way to deal with parasites.
Bottles clattered around me as I stood, some of them spilling what little was left in them onto the hardwood floor. I dragged my feet through the piles of trash, not caring enough to avoid making even more of a mess. I left the front door wide open, it’s not like it’s going to matter anyway. I’m not coming back.
I made my way to the roof, climbing the stairs with what little determination I had left to complete my final task. The afternoon sky was bright orange in the west, slowly fading into darkness to the east. There were no stars in the coming night sky, however, the only light in the dark was the artificial light of the city.
I made my way to the nightside and stared off over the city. New York was once a wasteland, but now it was one of the most important cities in the entire galaxy. People built the city back stronger than ever and turned the now water-filled creator into a memorial site. People came from all over, from other planets to visit the monuments erected in the name of the countless people lost that day and of the countless soldiers that were killed in the needless war. Every soldier who died on an alien planet, in space, or on some moon was remembered and with a field of statues that surrounded the crater.
I stepped onto the ledge, looking down to the street below. I was easily high enough to die, all it would take was one more step. One more step to put a guaranteed end to the memories, to the suffering. Just a small step and nothing would hurt anymore. I wouldn’t have to live with the fact that I was the single lowest form of life around.
So why couldn’t I do it? I had come up here countless times now, but I couldn’t do it. What was stopping me? It’s right there, it’s easy, it’s painless, why couldn’t I take the final step? Was there something left, some final action in the back of my mind that was stopping me?
I slowly lifted my eyes to the horizon once again, spotting what I had left to do. The memorial, I had never gone to. That was it, I’ve never visited my fallen comrades. The final act I had a duty to complete, once that was done I could do it.
I made a promise to myself, that once I visited the memorial I would finally take the step.
I returned to my shitty apartment and made my way to my room, finding a pen and paper. Then and there, I wrote my plan for the next day, down to an exact time.

2024.05.03 04:01 katanddog 2,000 Names (and their meanings) For Your Baby Boy found from a Vintage Mennen Company Booklet

My mom passed along this booklet that belonged to my grandmother when we were expecting. Figured I would share it here before discarding it. The Girl Name list is already posted 😊 Enjoy!
WHAT'S IN A NAME
Don't let the meanings concern you. Think instead of how the name will fit the child, when the child is grown, or known. Choose the name with care. It's very important to your baby-all through life. Here are some guides: - Say each name aloud, along with your own family name, to check rhythm and sound. - Use soft first names with sharp-sounding family names. - Use multi-syllable first names with short family names. - Avoid using a first name that ends with the same sound that starts the last name, such as "Jane Nevins." - Avoid "famous combinations" such as "Abraham" and "Lincoln." - Watch out for initials that spell out familiar letters, like “S. O. S”

2024.04.27 19:13 Eki75 Thoughts on Vienna’s 24-25 season?

Thoughts on Vienna’s 24-25 season?
Not as exciting as the 23/24 season was for me. I’ll be there for sure in December, so it looks like I’ll be seeing Hoffmann since I’ve already seen Vienna’s Rigoletto.
Premieres
Philippe Jordan conducts Verdi’s “Don Carlo” in a new production by Kirill Serebrennikov. The production stars Asmik Grigorian, Roberto Tagliavini, Joshua Guerrero, Étienne Dupuis, Eve-Maud Hubeaux, and Dmitry Ulyanov. The second cast will include Nicole Car, Elīna Garanča, and Vitalij Kowaljow.
Performance Dates: Sept. 26, 2024-March 23, 2025
György Kurtág’s “Fin de Partie” will be conducted by Simone Young and directed by Herbert Fritsch. The production will star Charles Workman, Hilary Summers, Philippe Sly, and Georg Nigl. Performance Dates: Oct. 16-29, 2024

2024.04.22 00:20 PleasantGeologist388 4-21 DISCORD COMMUNITY MOCK RESULTS

Would appreciate Thoughts/roasts on this 32 man mock:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets0/d/1L6ZZtrfuOMmqU-lzR0NEkiE6xzoe8ftFsXQU-X4hWMU/htmlview
Traded 1.14 and 5.168 to AZ for 1.27, 3.66, 3.90, 2025 4th
I wanted Olu but he went at 13, decided to take what I felt was a great offer to recoup draft capital in the mid rounds. After that tried to swing up for Mims, but perhaps lowballed on offers a bit and he was gone by 22. Only worthy OL left was Guyton, who I wasn’t a fan of so we took…
1.27- Adonai Mitchell, WR- Playmaking X receiver with ideal size/speed. I am honestly higher on Worthy, but we need a bigger WR to replace MT and give Olave more flexibility, and the difference was negligible. Didn’t want guyton and planned to move up for an OL using 45 and 90. Others considered: Xavier Worthy, Tyler Guyton
After this I shopped around 45 and 90, and struck deal with KC for pick 32. The plan was to pick Jordan Morgan for some versatility, but as I sent it in I was informed that they actually had accepted a different offer, one that I felt was inferior but I digress. After that I couldn’t get any takers to move down, and Morgan actually almost fell to 45 before going to the raiders a pick ahead. With no orher worthy OL on the board, I pivoted to…
2.45- Ruke Orhorhoro, DT, Clemson- Young DT with athleticism plenty of flashes on tape. He’s plenty raw, but he’s got star potential, and reuniting him with Bryan Bresee should give us a young and ascending interior duo for the future. Others considered: Tyler Nubin, Patrick Paul, Cooper Beebe
3.66- Cooper Beebe, OG, Kansas State- This time I promised myself an offensive lineman was coming to NOLA. I had some possible moves up, but after seeing both Patrick Paul and Beebe on the board I decided to stay put and let them come to me. As Paul went at 64, this was a slam-dunk pick. Starting LG from Day 1.
Trades 3.90, 2025 5 to SF for 3.94, 4.135- There were a few guys I was cool with her, so I slid back with SF and waited to see who dropped.
3.94, Jerremiah Trotter Jr., LB, Clemson- His lack of size makes this a bit of a risk, but I am counting on his football IQ and NFL bloodlines to shine through. Guys this smart find ways to make plays, and that was evident from his tape. He will compete to be our LB3, and establishes a pipeline of Clemson defenders to the Saints. Others considered: Cam Hart, Cedric Gray, Kam Kinchens
4.135- Javon Foster, OT, Missouri- There wasn’t anybody crazy falling, so I elected to sit and find value at 135. Braelon Allen is a guy I love who I would’ve taken at our pick, but the Bills got him 2 picks before. Still, I was happy to grab a tackle in Foster who has all the tools to become a good NFL starter with the right development. Others considered: Caelen Carson, Will Shipley
Traded 5.170, 6.190 to LV for 5.148- I was a fan of many guys on the board, so I swung a deal with LV to get another guy near pick 150.
5.148- Isaac Guerendo, RB, Louisville- Glad I didnt go RB at 135, as I thought there was no shot Guerendo would still be here. Tested like god and has 3 down versatility, can form a nice tandem with Kendre Miller after Kamara.
5.150- Nehemiah Pritchett, CB, Auburn- one of my favorite guys in the class, great length and very sticky in coverage. Would play a similar role to Yiadom last year. Others considered: Josh Newton, Joe Milton
5.175- Jamari Thrash, WR, Louisville: Pure BPA, gives Carr another weapon who can separate and work deep. This WR core now looks greatly underrated. Others considered: Sione Vaki, Delmar Glaze
6.199- Julian Pearl, OT, Illinois- double dipping at tackle to Try and make up for my misfortune at top of the draft. Decent swing with potential to grow Others considered: Frank Crum,
7.239- Josh Proctor, S, Ohio State: Nobody I really was interested in left apart from Proctor, so I was planning to move off for a 2025 6 the moment Proctor was picked. Luckily he stayed on, and we get our annual Ohio State dude. Can rotate in with Jordan Howden and that other guy Johnathan Abram
All in al, while OT did not work out perfectly, we still landed plenty of contributors who can eventually step into starting roles. We improved our 2025 capital (5th given up for 4th) and set ourselves up to take a top OT then if Carr is solid, and a top QB if he sucks. Thanks for reading!

2024.04.19 18:55 Thunderblessed63 Bo77: 10 Final Thoughts for the Lions Draft

Bo77: 10 Final Thoughts for the Lions Draft
Ladies and gentlefans, we are officially less than one week away from the grand daddy of them all, the NFL Draft. Well, actually scratch that. Given that Detroit is now good, the Draft is no longer the one shining light, the ultimate hope for redemption it used to be on the Lions calendar. However, it's still a very fun event, and it's always a joy to watch Brad Holmes cook.
Less than one week out, providing some final thoughts, predictions, and such about what I think is in store for the Detroit Lions this next week.
(1.) My prediction for the first-round remains that Detroit selects Missouri DL Darius Robinson
https://preview.redd.it/7juynwvmtgvc1.png?width=2000&format=png&auto=webp&s=5eba54f99eeca1fd9ecd2c534c0c8c2428f72432
It's really fun being so far back, because (a) it means you had a great season, and then (b) it makes the mystery of the pick that much more intriguing. Genuinely have no clue who is going to be available when, and people assuming anyone specific is going to be there (at least amongst first-round candidates) is largely just kidding themselves. No one, last year, would have said that both top running backs would've been off the board by 18 and Will McDonald. Teams make surprising selections all the time.
And so to that extent, yes, I could see someone like the Rams, or the Bengals, or the Bucs, or Eagles grabbing Robinson in advance. But I do think that out of all the guys who most consistently tend to be available in that 25-32 pick window, Robinson's probably the most likely to be a Lion, as he's an elite blend of the top priorities that the Lions look for. He's a vocal leader who plays hard and relentless football. He's big, strong, physical, and plays aggressively too. He was very productive last season, with 8.5 sacks and a forced fumble, and showed a lot of versatility to play anywhere from uncovered EDGE down to a 3-technique alignment. Lot of boxes checked, and a really good player.
This isn't to say he's the best pick, or the guy I'd pick, or anything like that. This is just simply saying, predictive measurement wise, Robinson is probably the most sensible prediction at this point.
(2.) And personally, my preference remains the same...
https://preview.redd.it/e04le3gqtgvc1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=51d4b59de387fb92d6564fc3da16bf3279513eaf
There's a lot of players I like from the film watch I've done on about thirty different players that reasonably could land in that range. None (besides Duke OL Graham Barton who I'd be flabbergasted if he were available) impressed me more than CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr. from Missouri. He's a feisty, athletic cornerback. Don't care about the testing scores honestly, the film shows he's quite comfortable operating in the fashion the Lions desire from a second cornerback. And that's where I think he'd fit in, probably as more consistent a field cornerback across from Carlton Davis, competing/rotating in with Amik Robertson to give the Lions their best matchup duo.
Additionally, for a Lions team that prides itself on its attitude, toughness, physicality, and effort, you want dudes who can be tone setters on defense, and Rakestraw brings that at a position you usually actually struggle to see that at. And the other thing I love about Rakestraw is that the floor is quite high. Even if the lack of elite deep speed does give him some issues, he's excellent in the slot, and some, such as Chris Simms and myself, also think he could shift over and play safety as well, a similar versatile style of player to Brian Branch and Devon Witherspoon.
Either way, a player who definitely brings the intensity, plays with the stickiness and physicality and smooth feet in press the Lions love, and can step in and compete at a spot of relative need right now. Rakestraw's not a terribly popular choice for Lions fans, but I stick by my take here, whether folks care or not.
For those interested, here is the breakdown of whom I would've selected in the first-round of the past couple of drafts, compared to whom the Lions drafted once they were on the clock. I took out the second first-round pick of the 2022 season because full disclosure, I was not anticipating the move up and was away from the action when it happened, thus I didn't really have the chance to fully settle and make an internal decision prior to the pick happening.
YEAR My Pick Lions Pick Lions GM at the Time
2024 CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (Missouri - - - - Brad Holmes
2023 CB Christian Gonzalez (Oregon) RB Jahmyr Gibbs (Alabama) Brad Holmes
2023 CB Deonte Banks (Maryland)* ILB Jack Campbell (Iowa) Brad Holmes
2022 EDGE Aidan Hutchinson (Michigan) EDGE Aidan Hutchinson (Michigan) Brad Holmes
2021 OT Penei Sewell (Oregon) OT Penei Sewell (Oregon) Brad Holmes
2020 CB Jeff Okudah (Ohio State) CB Jeff Okudah (Ohio State) Bob Quinn
2019 EDGE Montez Sweat (Mississippi State) TE T.J. Hockenson (Iowa) Bob Quinn
2018 DT Taven Bryan (Florida) C Frank Ragnow (Arkansas) Bob Quinn
2017 OLB T.J. Watt (Wisconsin) ILB Jarrad Davis (Florida) Bob Quinn
2016 OT Taylor Decker (Ohio State) OT Taylor Decker (Ohio State) Bob Quinn
2015 DT Malcolm Brown (Texas) G Laken Tomlinson (Duke) Martin Mayhew
2014 OT Taylor Lewan (Michigan) TE Eric Ebron (North Carolina) Martin Mayhew
2013 WR Tavon Austin (West Virginia) EDGE Ezekiel Ansah (BYU) Martin Mayhew
2012 OL Kevin Zeitler (Wisconsin) OT Riley Reiff (Iowa) Martin Mayhew
2011 DT Nick Fairley (Auburn) DT Nick Fairley (Auburn) Martin Mayhew
*- the one on Banks is that this pick would've been made after knowing that Holmes had already selected Gibbs earlier. If it were truly me picking both of them, then no, I would not have doubled up on cornerbacks. I would've gone with Bryan Breese, whom the Saints picked up.
(3.) Folks seemed to like my "most likely to draft" player prediction. Here's that for each position...
Every year, I do try and nab a prediction for which one specific player I do think is most likely to land as a Lion. I hit on this one in 2021 and 2023, with Purdue LB Derrick Barnes and then North Carolina WR Antoine Green. 2022 was a miss, as TE Greg Dulcich was a third-round pick for the Broncos, not the Lions. But this year, the player I am projecting here is...
Air Force safety Trey Taylor. Elite blend of on-field scheme fit, great intangibles off the field. Really the whole package. If he doesn't end up a Lion, think it will be because someone else scoops him up before Detroit is able to (or they go safety much sooner). He's a fantastic fit for what Holmes has evaluated and prioritized at that spot. Think he's the most likely player the Lions add.
I do try to aim to keep this as non-early players, so for sure no guys I think will get picked on the first or second day of the draft. This one I am going to expand and do one for each position.
https://preview.redd.it/9rudmcnttgvc1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=60d093196da2e008765328e6d30bc9154abba2db
Position Player School
QB Sam Hartman Notre Dame
RB Jace McClellan Alabama
WR Ryan Flournoy Southeast Missouri St.
TE Tip Reiman Illinois
OT Garret Greenfield South Dakota State
iOL Nathan Thomas Louisiana
DT Jaden Crumedy Mississippi State
EDGE Javon Solomon Troy
LB J.D. Bertrand Notre Dame
CB Elijah Jones Boston College
SAF Sione Vaki Utah
ST/K Joshua Karty Stanford
I added Sione Vaki on there as my second choice safety behind Taylor, as Taylor has already received his accolades though Vaki himself checks off a ton of boxes for Detroit.
(4.) Most of the media predictions tend to center around four guys...
https://preview.redd.it/zxcfc3ewtgvc1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=3d4edb9d7001279c6ff272f93b7e83b24d30d709
This is not an aggregate compilation by any means, more just what I note and click on. But the four most common names you see the Lions adding in some of these mocks tend to be:
  • Missouri DL Darius Robinson
  • Iowa CB Cooper DeJean
  • Alabama CB Kool-Aid McKinstry
  • West Virginia C Zach Frazier
Some thoughts real quick... Obviously I am in complete agreement on Darius Robinson being a likely selection for Detroit. That one makes plenty of sense and he checks a majority of the boxes they are going to be gunning for.
As for DeJean, I broke down his fit here for those interested. The short of it, since I frequently get lazy requests of folks who don't have the time to read and learn something, is this:
My final thought: If the Lions are drafting Cooper DeJean to play a cornerback role for them, I have a hard time seeing things going well there, as DeJean's athletic limitations (hips, lateral agility) don't indicate he can play in press coverage regularly enough, but if the Lions are comfortable playing him and Branch dually as slots and nickels, then he's actually a really strong fit in that capacity.
In essence, DeJean can play outside cornerback for some NFL teams, but the Lions scheme is going to highlight the few areas of weakness he actually has in his game, and his upside is much better realized at a position inside or a versatile safety. Will the Lions add him then? Perhaps. I wouldn't rule it out, but I do ultimately just think he goes off the board before the Lions will have a chance to nab him.
I think Kool-Aid's kind of an interesting one. An excellent fit on film, very consistent, really solid in press coverage, great awareness, instincts, and football smart. But while DeJean receives some gushing reviews for his off-field demeanor and such, Kool-Aid's had a mixed bag of reports there, with some teams down on him for that while others don't think it's problematic.
Frazier is an awesome fit and definitely a good fit identity wise with who the Lions are and want to continue being. The issue, in my opinion, is that while I really like both Frazier and Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson, I do think both are tougher projections long-term at guard, and thus their value is sort of weighed (in my opinion) to whether or not Frank Ragnow is going to be able to stick it out for another 3-4 years, or if his mounting injury pile pushes him fully into retirement in the next year or so. Both can handle a year or so at guard, but honestly, I don't love Frazier or JPJ as a high-caliber guard. Frazier lacks the length needed there and I think Powers-Johnson struggles handling speedier rushers, which he'd see more of against burst-oriented three-techniques.
(5.) Preference for positions taken? No thanks.
https://preview.redd.it/liden7pytgvc1.png?width=660&format=png&auto=webp&s=ed0b9998e5a2cfbadd11ecee85fd4ff37c6170a9
I genuinely don't have much preference for the positions the Lions take in the first three rounds. I see too many folks getting caught up in the idea that Detroit either has to, or "no way Holmes doesn't grab [pick position] until the fifth round!!!!!" comments. None of that is based in anything much. There's plenty of good options for Detroit.
The only two spots I think it'd be a little odd to see Detroit go early are QB or TE on offense, and then I'd throw in ILB on defense as a third one I don't expect them to touch. I list only those two spots because they are super solid in their top-2 for QB right now, and super solid in their top-3 for the tight end spot. RB probably can go on there, but for a run first team, I do prefer a deep stable, and so wouldn't hate it.
But back to the actual point, the Lions realistically could use a top-3 round pick at a lot of spots...
  • WR: Could use a true X-WR on the outside to step into a big time role fairly early in their career. Lions have Jameson Williams as the only true outside guy who's seen much time right now. DPJ could factor there, but a pick would make sense.
  • OT: The Lions could definitely stand to upgrade that OT3 spot, as injuries along the OL are very common and Matt Nelson signed elsewhere. Not predicting it comes this early, but could see it.
  • G: Obvious one. Lions need some depth here, a potential successor to Kevin Zeitler at RG for next season, though they may think that could be Colby Sorsdal with another season of development.
  • C: Ragnow could easily retire after this season if he gets another significant injury. Glasgow's fine to shift there, but a long-term successor isn't out of the question.
  • DT: McNeill and Reader are a good 1-2 punch, but deep DT rotations are a beautiful thing to have, and there's a lot of guys who fit the type of guy they like there this class.
  • EDGE: The class itself is somewhat lackluster, but we all know they could stand to find a true threat across from Hutchinson.
  • CB: Same as guard. Could be fine right now, could easily stand to add another body there with Amik not a top end player and Davis on an expiring deal.
  • S: Depth there is pretty weak unless you want to pull Branch out of the slot, which he's already a stud at.
So again, don't get too caught up on a specific "needs to address". Besides, remember the draft is about the future, so Holmes should be drafting with 2026 in mind, not aiming to fill in 2024 needs with rookies. That's not a terribly successful solution. The Lions are in a good spot to be forward-thinking when it comes to the Draft. Let them have that kind of trust, they've earned it.
(6.) The draft discourse keeps getting worse and worse every season...
https://preview.redd.it/68xqxv93ugvc1.png?width=2969&format=png&auto=webp&s=d5b322fca5974e1d2989145adf4711ac65e6d5e2
Not turning this into a full-on rant, but man, as much as I love social media and the rise of draft coverage providing more content, it's also a situation where any moron with a microphone thinks they're an expert. Feels like there's a handful of prospects that have been clear to use to see who really knows ball and who is just watching box scores and taking the lazy narratives. Some brutal, brutal takes out, and the fatigue of all the mediocre content can be overwhelming. Part of that is why I like to keep my draft content Lions-specific and kept a bit more internally here.
Appreciate everyone following along with the stuff I put out. Don't need the affirmations, I've been doing this well before I posted it on Reddit, but it is great to know so many folks do enjoy and appreciate it.
(7.) I think a trade up is a bit more likely than a trade down, but Lions have options either way...
https://preview.redd.it/kjpuvsw5ugvc1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=cff6e744349d61b1590b7c02db46a188007a801c
I've mentioned that I think there's a good group of targets that really fit a Brad Holmes mold and would make just too much sense in terms of trading up. The top four I'd watch are CB Terrion Arnold (Alabama), EDGE Jared Verse (Florida State), iOL Graham Barton (Duke), and then WR Brian Thomas Jr. (LSU).
Specifically, I do think Terrion Arnold is probably the most likely guy the Lions would go up for. As we all know, Brad Holmes is very connected with Alabama and Nick Saban. Arnold has a great relationship with the Saban family overall, and I know he's gotten some excellent reviews from his former head coach as teams have called and asked their opinion on him. Saban's definitely noted that few players take coaching and attention better than Arnold, and I think his fit in man press, his demeanor, and the versatility he brings (boundary, field, slot all options for him), mean that he's probably their top move up target. And I'll go one step further, I would heavily watch the Broncos at #12, Saints at #14, and Seahawks at #16 are all right in front of cornerback needy teams. For me, if the Raiders pass on Arnold at #13, I'd try to move up for him. My sneaking suspicion however, is that if the Chargers do move down from 5th to 11th, their pick is either Taliese Fuaga or Terrion Arnold. Jim Harbaugh thought Arnold was a special player during Michigan's bowl prep to face the Tide.
Now, for those who'd prefer to move down, there's some plausible situations to envision working in the Lions favor:
  • The Carolina Panthers really need some WR help and would probably want to get in front of the Chiefs and maybe 49ers for Xavier Legette.
  • The Washington Commanders have long been rumored to be a team who might try to jump back into the first-round for an offensive tackle. I'd throw the New England Patriots in there as well.
  • We saw Dane Brugler's mock draft has the Las Vegas Raiders coming up from 2.44 to land Michael Penix, trading with Detroit. That's another option.
  • Not as commonly discussed but the Tennessee Titans moving up for a cornerback or edge rusher (probably Kool-Aid McKinstry at corner) would not be a big surprise.
If Holmes wants to move down, obviously it's always easier to simply say it can happen than not, but there are a handful of scenarios that make a lot of sense. He should have some really good options.
(8.) A quick little, What Would Quinntricia Do Mock Draft?
https://preview.redd.it/owsf8x2dugvc1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=d245725c28f55cac22732a2c85592ce8283d317c
I did this last year and it was kind of a fun exercise. After tracking draft molds and trends now under two separate regimes, it's interesting to change between them. So, here's a fairly quick run through of a predictive mock draft done according to the tendencies we'd see with Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia at the helm. Now note, I actually thought overall that Quinn was a quality drafter. He had an excellent eye offensively, and was usually proven right on his wild selections in the third-round, uncovering some gems like Kenny Golladay and Tracy Walker there. He had plenty of issues in free agency and in his decision to empower a really brutal vision for the team and scheme under Matt Patricia, but as a scouting/drafting general manager, he was largely solid. So there's some respect for Quinn. There's not a single ounce of respect for Matt Patricia.
For the first-round, Quinn's philosophy was that he'd largely go "best available at the top needed position", so an attempt to somewhat blend the philosophies. This was a successful way to grab OT Taylor Decker, made Jeff Okudah a clear prediction, and made LB Jarrad Davis another really clear prediction by that point in the cycle. Now I would say EDGE outright is the biggest need, but philosophically, Quinn and Patricia believed in paying veteran edge rushers and drafting that position for depth later on to find hits at. So we can cross that one out. Realistically, the top target for Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia likely would have been either offensive line this year or maybe a cornerback. I think CB Kool-Aid McKinstry (Alabama) would have been their guy for sure. Do note, none of this is to knock a player.
Second-round was usually an instant plug at a run-oriented position. He took LBs, RBs, DTs, and then one CB there. So looking at it, probably a DT or OL given their current needs. Quinn actually has a much more defined "type" or mold for OL than Holmes does, and so predicting this one is a bit easier, G Cooper Beebe (Kansas State) fits there really nicely.
The third-round was Quinn's brightest spot. Jonah Jackson, Kenny Golladay, Tracy Walker, Graham Glasgow all really strong adds, and even his worst picks (Julian Okwara, Will Harris) stuck around for a few seasons during the Holmes-Campbell regime. The most common thing that Quinn did, however, was take a bit of a surprise pick there. Will Harris, Tracy Walker, and Kenny Golladay all were projected to land in the 4th-5th rounds, but Quinn took them a good deal earlier to ensure they landed here. I think this same mold, and the Lions roster composition also considered, S Malik Mustapha (Wake Forest) probably fits the Quinn mold best there.
Heading into Day 3 with four picks, Quinn grabbed running backs in four of his five drafts, always grabbed five edge rushers over his time, with only Julian Okwara coming any earlier than the fifth round. For the edge, Quinn and Patricia wanted pocket squeezers, physical run-stopping edge setters with a good bull rush off the edge. That's probably EDGE Trajan Jeffcoat (Arkansas), a Razorback most ironically as well. The running backs tended to be slashers and pass catchers more often on Day 3, and I can confidently say that Quinn would have loved RB Emani Bailey (TCU). You'd also see a handful of possession receivers on Day 3 with size and leaping ability and ability to make contested catches. That's probably WR Bub Means (Pittsburgh) this year. And then Quinn was quite fine with the specialist positions on Day 3, drafting a long snapper and a fullback, as well as two backup quarterbacks with limited upside to become starters. I think he'd have been quite fine adding K Cam Little (Arkansas) this year in the seventh.
Pick Pos. Player School
Round 1, Pick #29 CB Kool-Aid McKinstry Alabama
Round 2, Pick #61 G Cooper Beebe Kansas State
Round 3, Pick #73 S Malik Mustapha Wake Forest
Round 5, Pick #164 WR Bub Means Pittsburgh
Round 6, Pick #201 EDGE Trajan Jeffcoat Arkansas
Round 6, Pick #205 RB Emani Bailey TCU
Round 7, Pick #249 K Cam Little Arkansas
Again, this isn't a knock on the players trying to associate them to Quinn and Patricia, more so just what the draft would probably look like using their molds for the Lions current roster composition.
(9.) I missed a few dudes on my Lions-fit board
https://preview.redd.it/edqlz96fugvc1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=3aea12efe34603df676dd671730201cd2eb9331e
You'll have to forgive me, I still have a different job that takes up most of my time, so I did have a few guys slip through the cracks on the fit board. Should also have Zak Zinter, Javontae Jean-Baptiste, Christian Haynes, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, and Sione Vaki from there from the second glance I did, and some comments some mentioned.
You can find that full board linked here. I can't seem to edit the post so I cannot add them after the fact it would seem. Not without eliminating the whole post and re-doing it.
You're welcome to @ me on the threads and such during the Draft if they pick anyone I kept off. I'd happily note why I moved them off. And then do note, however, that we are going thru later this summer and doing a deep dive into revising the molds, since we'll be shifting from 2 full Holmes draft classes on those, to now having 4 full draft classes, additional free agency notes to add in, and then also more notes and comments to add in from the draft process reveals (Inside the Den videos).
(10.) Final note: The acclaimed Bo77 Draft Class Scouting Summary post will be out the week following the draft...
https://preview.redd.it/ln57d3ojugvc1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=de982451711d2b674781ccdd681bed842cda493e
I originally was not going to write this but had the time so wrote it. I will be posting a full seven-round prediction for Detroit this upcoming Thursday morning.
Usually, I was able to pump it out in time to post on a Saturday night or Sunday afternoon. With my new work schedule (Sunday thru Thursday), it might not get finished up until mid-week this year. My apologies for the delay.
But to that note, I am curious what kind of format/info people would like. These are the posts I did for previous drafts:
Let me know what y'all want to see on it. I'd love to add a gif or two but struggling to find a consistently decent free gif maker. If anyone knows a good one, let me know.
Thanks folks, looking forward to another awesome weekend of Lions crushing the NFL Draft.
RESPONSE QUESTIONS
Here's some questions I'd love to hear from y'all:
  • Which Day 3 player would you most want to see end up on the Lions?
  • Which Michigan player would you most want to see on the Lions?
  • Which of the top-5/6 QB's do you think is going to bust?
  • Who is the most underrated player in the draft?
  • Who is the most overrated player in the draft/least want to see on Detroit?
  • Who is the best player you don't think is a good fit for Detroit?
Let's hear 'em.

Memory transcription subject: Silvera, Factory 13 Manager
Date [standardized human time]: October 31st, 2136

My car nearly ran over the decorative plastic shrubbery dividing the parking lot of Factory 13 from the actual main office as it hit a patch of black ice, “Holy fucking shit! Guess the de-icing crew isn't coming in today… great. Fantastic even!”
I was grateful for the ice spikes on the soles of my boots as I stepped out of my car. The black ice had effectively turned the entire lot into a massive slipping hazard. At the very least, the building's heaters kept the front door free of ice, “If only it warmed up the blasted freaking CARD READER! READ THE CARD, DAMN YOU!”
Beep! I flung the door open and sprinted into the building, ever so grateful that my office was on the ground floor. My legs still ached from following John through his apartment building. Seriously, how in the void did he run for that long!?
My office came to life as I entered. My computer greeted me warmly as it tried to enter into operation as though everything was normal, “Alert!” the computer's fan revved as it entered into emergency mode and started to utilize all of its power, “Emergency scenario! Plant status!”
All of the pretty UI elements and well-thought-out colors of the monitor died out in favor of a completely black screen with only white text to communicate with the user. Some of the higher ups scoffed at not using the UI they dropped millions of creds on to develop, but time proved that when shit hit the fan, no one cared about how nice something looked.
PLANT STATUS: NOMINAL
PLANT PERSONNEL: BELOW SAFE MINIMUM AMOUNT
PLANT RECOMMENDATION: ENTER INTO LOW PRODUCTION MODE TO DECREASE LIKELIHOOD OF CATASTROPHIC MELTDOWN
“Priority alert to the whole plant!”
READY TO RECORD: STATE START TO BEGIN RECORDING AND END TO CEASE RECORDING
“Start! Plant 13 is entering mandatory slowdown due to the current political crisis! All hands able to safely come in are now required to do so. All hands present, please initiate shutdown procedure, Charlie. End!”
My tablet came to life, letting me know the plant mainframe had just issued a priority alert. I doubted I would have any new hands rushing in to help even with the promise of overtime, but at least it'd stop this shift from leaving prematurely.
“Alert! Crew list by occupation, then assigned work area!”
The screen whirled and formulated a way too small list to keep the plant fully operational. I could see parts of the process were beginning to slow down to safe levels for what we had to work with. I'd shut it down all together but… with how costly a cold start is that could cost everyone their job… better to play it safe and just underperform for now…
Hang on… Intake is still going at full speed… the enricher is starting to… OH, FUCK.
I activated the plant intercom, “ALERT! ALL HANDS NEARBY THE ENRICHER! PRIORITIZE SLOWDOWN OF IT! SAFE LEVELS HAVE BEEN EXCEEDED! BARRING SAFE SLOWDOWN, AUTHORIZATION TO COMMIT TO A FULL PLANT SHUTDOWN IS NOW IN EFFECT!”
It was only half of a second before my tablet let me know I had a call from the CEO himself, “SILVERA! WHAT'S- What's going on?! Did you just authorize a full shutdown!?”
I frantically brought up the plant process on my computer, “Only if the enricher can’t be brought back down to safe levels! Something has jammed it into full speed and the slow-mode isn't working! I don't need that thing eating so much plutonium that it goes critical! Especially not while we are at war!”
A brief moment of silence made me wonder if we had been disconnected before he let our a very long and exhausted bray, “Shit! I'm grabbing my tools. About time, I showed my plant hands why I get the nice chair. Keep me posted, Silvera. We can't afford a cold start right now.”
I knew there was a reason I liked that dusty old Fissan. Only boss who'd actually get his own fur dirty. I brought up the list of active personnel and made sure to add Quoshi to it. Though, I failed to stop the sigh as I realized we only had a tenth of the people we were supposed to here. A measly one thousand and eighty-two people, and most of them were our human workers.
Just how many of our staff are hiding in a closet, ‘cause there's ‘too many scary predators!’ freaking morons. The scariest predators we have wield flamethrowers.
Ah! Jolenne! So glad you got your wooly ass in today! With a little more cheer than was appropriate, I called the supervisor Venlil, “Jol! I am so glad you came in today! What's your status?”
He let out a frustrated huff, “I just got the Neutralizer into low gear mode. Also pissed off at the new recruits… the ones that aren't stupid apes. Having trouble making them work.”
Figures when shit hits the fan, the good workers disappear, “Well that's just great. I'll see about getting this addressed- wait… why are the apes stupid today?”
He sounded a little less harsh as he explained, “They don't seem to understand just how serious everything that's happening is.”
My mind flashed back to one of the many conversations I've had with John and many of the other Humans in my life, “Jol… this is nothing new to them. They understand what it's like to have a government erase cultures that it considers problematic. They've nearly been wiped out by said government that has done this. Just be glad neither of our people had this happen to us.”
I could see him in my mind running a greasy paw down his face as he sighed, “You're right… by the way, I am almost at the Enricher. Can you get someone to get to the washer and get ready to slow it down? I don't want a pressure blowout.”
A bunch of tools clattered into a toolbox, “On it. Has there been any word on why operations can't do this from their control room?”
I rolled my eyes as they landed on the personnel list, “Yeah. They aren't here today, and we are all locked out of the room, let alone the system.”
Jol let out a loud groan, “FUCK… alright. Give me a second. I think I need two people to help me.”
My eyes darted around the active personnel list before settling on my normal trio running around as a duo seeing as Uska is a Gojid and thus not coming in today, “Good news there! Got the perfect pair of knuckleheads for ya! I'll send them that way!”
I deafened my line to the number one assistant plant manager and called my best friend, “Mila! What are you and Jamie doing right now? Jol needs help with the enricher. Can you get to the washer and lower its output?”
I suppressed a snicker as the plant comm system automatically connected us, “Ahh! Don't do that!”
It's good she couldn't see my body as my tail was wagging way too hard to try and hide it, “Sorry! But the washer?”
I could hear snickering in the background, “Yeah, Jamie and I are headed there right now. Just got to swing by Supply and grab some radiation badges.”
My paw hovered over the deafen key, “Understood, keep me posted.”
I quickly deafened them, “JOL! Got Mila and Jamie on route to the washer. Went to get badges first, so hold tight!”
I could hear the whirl of an engine as he drove through the plant, “Roger.”
Alright. Now I just need for nothing else to go wrong…
I set the comms to listen and switched the news feed on just in time to catch the end of them breaking up one of the two mobs. It was a bit surprising to see them fire flamethrowers above the heads of the protestors. I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding after the crowd left and no one seemed to be on fire.
My tail wagged a bit as I spotted John Towering above the other Exterminators and police officers. He seemed to be somewhat respected by those around him as he pointed at stuff and someone would run over in the direction he gestured to. Maybe I can lift that ban on Exterminators coming into the plant finally… so long as they are competent, of course.
The comms came to life with Jamie’s voice, “Hey, we are at the Washer, and it’s not wanting to slow down. The feeder is running crazy fast for some reason and- WHAT?! ALRIGHT! I’LL TELL HER! Mila says the emergency shutoff has been welded shut! The only way to slow it down now is to stop the feed. We are in route to there… BOMB! BOMB! EVACUATE THE PLANT! MILA GET DOWN! WE HAVE TO SHUT THE FEEDER OFF NOW! BOSS CALL THE UN EMBASSY! TELL THEM A BOMB GOT PLANTED AT THE SHIP FUEL REFINERY AND WE NEED A BOMB SQUAD THREE HOURS AGO!”
Did? … The only race to ever blow something up like this were humans… Why would they? … They blew up their own people once… maybe it's humans they don’t see as humans anymore? WAIT. GOTTA CALL! GOTTA EVACUATE!
I slammed my paws down on my pad as I tried to figure out how to call the UN. Addressing the computer, my voice broke into a bad screech, “ALERT! A BOMB HAS BEEN FOUND IN THE PLANT! SHUTDOWN CRITICAL PROCESSES AND EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY! I REPEAT, SHUTDOWN CRITICAL PROCESSES AND EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY!”
My tablet notified me that my message was sent out, as well as another call from my CEO. I ignored him in favor of saving the plant. The Embassy line rang and every few seconds it would ring again to let me know I was connected but no one had answered. The clock on my wall seemed to come to a stop as I watched the time move on by. Every second felt like a voided hour.
“Hello. You have reached the UN Embassy. If you would please hold-”
“THERE'S A BOMB!”
“WhAT?!”
“FACTORY 13 AT FROZEN MOUNTAIN! WE ARE A SHIP FUEL REFINEMENT PLANT! IF THAT BOMB GOES OFF, IT COULD CONTAMINATE THE ENTIRE CITY! WE NEED A BOMB SQUAD NOW!”
“I- HOLY SHIT! HOLD ON! I’LL GET HELP ON THE WAY! ROGER!”
Their voice trailed away as I brought up the plants cameras and began to save them to my computer off site. If we lose everything here, maybe they can recover my computer and figure out who did this/ The videos of the washer came up and for the most part I could find nothing as I fast forwarded through hours of video. It wasn’t until I got to within a few minutes before Mila and Jamie's arrival that I finally saw a Kolshian in plant attire walk up and drop a bag off near the middle of the washer before walking off with at least seven more bags on their back… OH, BY THE VOID SEA.
“Hello? This is General Koch of the UN. I have a bomb squad in route to your plant. Who am I speaking to?”
“I- duh- uh, I’m SIlvera the plant manager here… It was Jamie a wounded Marine who found it. I just found the perpetrator on video… It was a Kolshian wearing our attire, and they dropped off a bag and walked off with like seven more… I am evacuating the plant now and shutting it down. I-I-I am also backing up the video footage of everything to my home computer at Fifteen O’ Four Winter apartments… In case… In case… I don’t want to die…”
“Good. I need you to listen carefully. Stay calm. You are doing great. I am going to have some people walk you through letting us have access to your system. After that, you need to leave and wait at your home. I will call you so don’t answer the door unless I ok it. Alright?”
I nodded, not even realizing the General couldn’t see me. Pretty soon though, a tech talked me through getting them into my system and I almost didn’t have to touch my own keyboard. Just download a single package they emailed to me and they had full control. Better control than what I had.
Pretty soon, General Koch talked to me again and advised me to go home and wait. It didn’t take much for me to obey that. Nearly all of our staff had already slammed the plant into shutdown and were nearly sprinting away front the plant. I felt a little better to see Mila swerving out of the plant with both Jamie and Jol in her truck. Not to mention, with the mobs out and the city in a mandatory curfew, there was no traffic on the roads to slow our escape.
As I waited for the plant to empty before leaving, hundreds of UN ships and transports came screaming into the plant. I knew they kept some people nearby to keep an eye on us but not this many. Within a few minutes, teams had already breached the compound and were scanning every inch of the plant.
I drove off when I remembered that I wasn’t done yet. The ride home was fast with empty roads and streets but twisted my guts into a knot. This was wrong on so many levels. Everything I have built for myself now hinged on the actions of others. Normally, others didn’t think too highly of us Sivkits.
At my apartment, all I could do was lock the door and watch the news. I got to watch the next mob dispersal from the beginning. That knot in my stomach tried to climb out of my mouth as I recognized a few Factory 13 workers mixed amongst the miners. John was at the frontline again, keeping the few people they had to stand against the sea of angry workers together.
I felt fear when a miner knocked an officer back with a sledgehammer and joy to see John pick up a shield and defend him. Terror gripped my heart as the exterminator let out blasts of fire above the heads of the protestors, and they still kept attacking. They let the fires catch their signs of fire and used those as weapons. At some point, John’s shield got knocked away and one of them took a board to the side of his knee.
Then the Exterminators did something I didn’t expect. They stopped using their flamethrowers. Instead of roasting the masses to death, they sprayed them with a red liquid and the Venlil pawed at their faces like it was fire. They rolled round balls into the crowds and the white loud pops scared a lot of them away. John stood back up and rallied the line back together, and they started to advance and push the mob back.
I let out a sigh of relief and sucked it back in as I watched a bulldozer come barreling through the crowd. I lost sight of John in the panic as it ran over protestors and exterminators alike before crashing into a giant platform seconds after a Gojid on top of it dove off to safety. OH, VOID THAT WAS JOHN’S DAD! WHAT’S HIS NAME?! LOKE! THAT WAS LOKE!
Loke was looking around in a dazed manner and barking orders at no one in particular. A Kolshian ran up and helped him to his feet, and I sunk into my chair as John joined him not too much later. I watched as he typed something into his phone, and I got the very message he sent.
“Hey. I am ok. Stay safe.”
My paws were barely able to type out my reply quick enough, “Stay safe too, love.”
I could see a slight smirk form on his mouth before he put his mask back on and walked into the crowd of Officers and Exterminators. My phone going off scared me enough to jump out of my own seat.
The familiar voice on the other side of the line helped me calm down. Koch had a rather calming voice, “Alright Silvera is it? We have managed to find all of the twelve bombs and have disarmed five of them. We don’t believe there is any risk of them detonating now. However, I need to talk to you about security. Can I come talk to you in person?”
“Y-yeah… Though… Ugh… my boyfriend got hurt in the riots. I was wanting to see him as soon as he got off of work.”
“I understand. We are tightening security and getting people out here to get the plant running again. I do have a Fissan here who says he is the CEO. We are checking him out now, so I can go over it with him as well. You did good work today, SIlvera. No one in this frozen city knows it, but they all owe you their life.”

___/\___

Silvera and the not very good day. Seriously. She went from having a bad to nearly be at the focal point of every person in the city possibly dying. LIke the fuel you would need to violate the laws of physics and move at FTL would probably make a pretty big bang.

Also, thank you for your patience. I missed three days of work this week and it messed up my writing schedule, which is why this chapter is so late. Be aware I am getting surgery tomorrow so next weeks update my be late or postponed.

So Riddle me this… Does anyone have any lore on starship fuel processing? Cause uh I made a bad mock up of what i think it is and I could probably do with some reading up on it…

Special thanks to u/JulianSkies and u/callmefishy11 for proofreading! Seriously it felt like my eyes were melting out of my skull and your feedback was everything I needed!

2024.04.13 18:13 Ben_Elohim_2020 Master List: The Nature of Family

Hello Everyone! In the interests of organisation and ease of reference I’ve decided to compile a “Master List” of everything relating to my series The Nature of Family. You can expect this list to be updated as new additions are made available.
Main Series
The Nature of Family: Quinlim is desperate, a destitute and downtrodden young venlil man struggling to provide for his terminally-ill mother and younger brother under the oppressive shadow of Twilight Valley, a once-great city full of prejudice, oppression, and strife where the dying light of day rests perpetually on the bleeding edge of the night. All seems hopeless, until a chance encounter with the city's burgeoning human-led criminal underworld teaches him that some rules are meant to be broken and make him question everything he ever thought he knew. Can Quinlim save the ones he loves and make it out with his soul intact or will Twilight Valley claim yet another victim? Genre: Drama / Thriller.
Side Series
Empty Eyes: One does not become the go-to hatchetman for Venlil Primes most notorious organised crime family because they had an easy and carefree childhood. Learn about the trials and tribulations of Trilvri Capozzi, one of the most popular and prominent supporting characters from The Nature of Family, as the backstory of how he came to be the hardened, empty-eyed man he is today is finally revealed in full as well as the origins of the Capozzi Crime Family itself. Genre: Tragedy
One-Shots
Special Delivery: In the aftermath of the Battle of Earth and the ensuing refugee crisis on Venlil Prime unfiltered migration has allowed the proliferation of organised crime and nowhere is this more true than Twilight Valley, the city of eternal twilight. Join Trilvri and his human associate Ramone as they make a very special delivery fraught with danger and intrigue in the first ever “Proof-of-Concept'' story set in the The Nature of Family storyline. Genre: Action / Thriller
Wrath of the Ripper: It’s all Hallow’s Eve in Twilight Valley and murder is afoot, but it's not any of the usual suspects. The Ripper is on the run in this 90’s Slasher inspired Halloween One-shot and he’s coming for you! Join Sailee, a young Venlil student of Twilight Valley University, as she braves the dangers of the Human District for one hell of a Halloween party that’s sure to be a frightful time! The Only question remaining is who she should be scared of most, the Ripper, the Exterminators, the Humans, or the Mafia? Genre: Horror Slasher / Thriller
Routine Call: Set prior to the events of Chapter 1 of The Nature of Family, ride along with Vaesh, a Gojid veteran of the Twilight Valley Exterminators Guild, and his new partner Falram as they respond to reports of a predator infestation deep in the heart of the Primitive District that promises to be anything but routine. Genre: Horror / Thriller
Canon Crossovers * If you’re interested in adding to these then just let me know… *
The Happy Cow: Join Trilvri Capozzi as he makes a trip to the Dayside to meet one of the Family’s newest and most eccentric associates, Mr. Baalibolidilivideniigabito (or Baali as his friends call him) in this crossover one-shot between The Nature of Family and Predator Disease Treatment Facilities. Written by Ben_Elohim and featuring art by Wisram it’s sure to be a wool-munching good time! So welcome one and all to the Happy Cow! Would you like a Milkshake? Genre: Comedy / Drama
Guardians & Killers: Masterfully written by our very own beloved JulianSkies and set before humanity's First Contact, two unusual Exterminators meet, one native to Blackriver, another to become even more famous in Twilight Valley. Genre: Slice-of-Life
Radio Free Orion: Orion and his merry crew of misfits set out across the stars interviewing unique characters from across the Nature of Predators shared universe on Venlil Prime's one and only pirate radio show! After their latest run-in with the law they’ve decided to lay low for a little while and where better to do so than Twilight Valley! I helped co-write large segments of these crossovers and to date they are still some of my favourites, particularly the interview with Don Capozzi who doesn’t normally get nearly enough screen time. Genre: Comedy / Interview
Nature of a Homeless Musician: Michael Ruiz Andrews is a refugee and a musician living in Five Meadows on Venlil Prime. When enlisted by his Krakotl friend Khornel to fight back against the tyranny of the local Exterminators Guild, however, the power of music can only do so much. Seeking out a high-tech spy chip to dig up dirt on the guild, they travel to Twilight Valley but get more than they bargained for when they make the mistake of accidentally crossing the local Mafia. Can our duo escape in one piece and with their spy chip in hand? Genre: Drama / Thriller / Musical
Noteworthy Non-Canon Stories
Child of Night: Set in the future of 2158, Yulpa Cultists are up to their old tricks, kidnapping humans for their sick ritualistic torture games. Recently they’ve made a very, VERY large mistake though. They decided to fuck with the WRONG Family. Genre: Drama / Thriller
Ficnapped! By Saint-Andros: Part of the 2023 Ficnapping, this alternate take on the Empty Eyes storyline showcases another possible ending in which Trilvri takes his revenge on those who have wronged him. Genre: Thriller
Art * I also love art from the community…*
Trilvri by Blue (NoF Cover Art): The first piece of art I ever had commissioned and made by Blue (who does excellent work and is wonderful to work with), showcasing Trilvri set against the backdrop of the Drunken Venlil Distillery. Used as Cover Art for the Main Series.
Trilvri by Botanics: A cute, fun little drawing of everyone’s favourite empty-eyed Venlil mobster as generously drawn by Botanics.
Empty Eyes Cover Art by Blue: Cover art for the Empty Eyes side story, showcasing Trilvri’s transition from child to adult. Features a LOT of little details. I just love it and Blue is awesome as always.
Evil Eye: A close-up of Trilvri’s eye, made by me as drawing practice.
Quinlim in Alleyway: A depiction of Quinlim in one of Twilight Valley’s many back alleys, made by me.
Remembrance: A close-up of Trilvri’s hand, clutching a pair of very significant dog-tags. More of my drawing practice and focusing on hands.
Quinlim by Gecko: A much better depiction of Quinlim dressed in his suit and holding his shotgun as envisioned by Gecko.
Trilvri by Gecko: Another art piece by Gecko showcasing Trilvri in a very “Sin City” style of black, white, and orange as he stabs and shoots his way through his enemies.
Cute Quinlim: An adorable little drawing of Quinlim made by me and modelled after the artstyle of a piece by Lime on the Discord.
“Cute” Trilvri: Got bored. Made a Trilvri to match the Quinlim above.
The Builder's Lane Bloodbath: A wonderfully horrific drawing by Miglove depicting the epic climax of the infamous massacre. Featuring Sawvek and Intalran.
Memes
What are the Family’s Views?: A meme and template based on the old “Mario Bros. Views” meme featuring artwork by Gecko mentioned above.
Other
Federation Military Roles & Structure: A breakdown of my interpretation of the different roles and responsibilities within the Federation military focusing on the Exterminators and the Space Corps.

Of course last Roc and Gerard were a big duo by themselves and Julian the goat forever. But look at those damage extreme and damage reductions! I'm expecting some madness to come with the banners of that New saga game to come next month.

Last time we analyzed Raiders of the Lost Ark, and in Part 2 we'll be covering the last two movies: Temple of Doom and Last Crusade. Starting with arguably the weakest link of the trilogy and the "black sheep" of the film series, and ending with what many consider to be the peak of the franchise, it'll make for an... illuminating (read that in your best Sean Connery accent) discussion. This duo, for better or worse (almost entirely better) helped define the original Indiana Jones story, which in turn influenced cinema in ways we cannot overstate. 2024.04.01 17:31 ZandrickEllison Which team would win the Final Four -- IF prospects stayed for all 4 years of eligibility?

The NCAA Final Four is set -- with UConn, Alabama, Purdue, and N.C. State. As usual, experience helped for most of those teams, highlighted by seniors like Zach Edey (Purdue), Mark Sears (Alabama), and D.J. Burns (NC State).
Most elite prospects never make it to their senior year. For them, college usually means a quick cameo. Staying for 2 years is rare, let alone 3 or 4 like the old days.
But what if that old trend never died? What if basketball players actually stayed for all 4 years of their college careers? How stacked would these teams be? And which of those stacked teams would be the best? That thought exercise brings us here today, with my rankings of the best college teams in a world where players stayed through their senior year.
SWEET SIXTEEN
(16) IOWA HAWKEYES
PG: Tony Perkins, senior
SG: Payton Sandfort, junior
SF: Keegan Murray, senior
PF: Kris Murray, senior
C: Owen Freeman, freshman
One of the challenges with this exercise is debating the worth of one star versus a team with depth. Some of the best eligible players in the field -- like Scottie Barnes for Florida State and Evan Mobley for USC -- may not have the horses around them to be a top contender in a suddenly crowded NCAA field. I think Keegan Murray would have just enough here at Iowa, including his twin brother Kris. At this point, Keegan would be a senior and one of the most well-rounded players in the country.
(15) TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS
PG: Jaden Springer, senior
SG: Keon Johnson, senior
SF: Dalton Knecht, senior
PF: Julian Phillips, sophomore
C: Jonas Aldoo, junior
Elite Eight finisher Tennessee would add a lot of NBA talent and would even be able to bring the speedy Kennedy Chandler off the bench. Most of these Volunteer alum left a little early and didn't light the NBA on fire yet, but they could be stars if they stayed in college, like current senior Dalton Knecht has been.
(14) NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS
PG: R.J. Davis, senior
SG: Cormac Ryan, senior
SF: Harrison Ingram, junior
PF: Armando Bacot, senior
C: Day'Ron Sharpe, senior
The current UNC Tar Heels were a veteran team that rode their experience to a 1-seed (if not a Final Four appearance). They'll add another veteran big here in Day'Ron Sharpe. These Heels would have great size in the frontcourt and shooting in the backcourt, but their depth would be more limited; UNC hasn't produced as many NBA players as expected in their recent era.
(13) HOUSTON COUGARS
PG: Jamal Shead, senior
SG: L.J. Cryer, senior
SF: Emanuel Sharpe, sophomore
PF: J'Wan Roberts, senior
C: Jarace Walker, sophomore
This year's Cougars went 30-4 in the regular season and earned a # 1 seed, only to get knocked out by Duke over the weekend in large part to an injury to veteran Jamal Shead. Well, the Cougars will get another bite at the apple here with a team consisting mostly of their current players. The one major addition would be getting Jarace Walker (Indiana's lottery pick) back in the fold to help add some athleticism and energy inside. The fact that one of the best teams in the country this year wouldn't crack the top 10 shows you the depth of this field. Houston is well-coached and well-disciplined, but the program isn't as chocked full of NBA talent as other clubs on our list.
(12) KANSAS JAYHAWKS
PG: Kevin McCullar, senior
SG: Johnny Furphy, freshman
SF: Gradey Dick, sophomore
PF: Jalen Wilson, senior
C: Hunter Dickinson, senior
The current Kansas team struggled with their depth after the injury to Kevin McCullar. They'd get some relief here in the form of sharpshooter Gradey Dick and forward Jalen Wilson, but not much else beyond that.
(11) MICHIGAN WOLVERINES
PG: Dug McDaniel, sophomore
SG: Kobe Bufkin, sophomore
SF: Jett Howard, sophomore
PF: Caleb Houston, junior
C: Moussa Diabete, junior
Part of the reason that coach Juwan Howard struggled so badly this year (going 8-24 and getting fired) was because some of these young bucks jumped to the NBA earlier than expected. If they stayed in the program, the Wolverines would have been a solid, balanced squad.
(10) ARIZONA WILDCATS
PG: Caleb Love, senior
SG: Dalen Terry, junior
SF: Bennedict Mathurin, senior
PF: Keshad Johnson, senior
C: Oumar Ballo, senior
This season's Arizona Wildcats disappointed in March Madness, falling as a 2-seed in the Sweet Sixteen. However, they'll get a boost here with talents like Dalen Terry and Bennedict Mathurin, who would presumably be among the best scorers in the country as a senior. The depth inside isn't quite on the level of the other super teams, but there are at least 7 current or future pros on the roster.
(9) BAYLOR BEARS
PG: Keyonte George, sophomore
SG: Ja'Kobe Walter, freshman
SF: Kendall Brown, junior
PF: Jeremy Sochan, junior
C: Yves Missi, freshman
Now playing with the Utah Jazz, Keyonte George has proven to be more advanced as a distributor than we thought he was back in college. That development could give this athletic team a solid offensive set and avoid having to see Point-Sochan like we did in San Antonio this year.
ELITE EIGHT
(8) PURDUE BOILERMAKERS
PG: Braden Smith, sophomore
SG: Jaden Ivey, senior
SF: Fletcher Lover, sophomore
PF: Mason Gillis, senior
C: Zach Edey, senior
We're taking a real Final Four team and adding a former lottery pick in Jaden Ivey to it. Say what you will about Ivey and Zach Edey's NBA future, but they'd be about as productive of a 1-2 punch as you could find in college. The rest of the roster doesn't wow you, so the duo would have to carry this team to make a run.
(7) AUBURN TIGERS
PG: Sharife Cooper, senior
SG: Jabari Smith Jr., junior
SF: J.T. Thor, senior
PF: Johni Broome, junior
C: Walker Kessler, senior
Little Sharife Cooper may have jumped to the NBA too early; if he stuck around, he'd be a stud senior by now. He'd also provide a much-needed backcourt boost for this Tigers team. Even as it stands right now, they'd have to go with a super-sized lineup and try to choke out choke out opponents on the defensive end.
(6) KENTUCKY WILDCATS
PG: Cason Wallace, sophomore
SG: Reed Sheppard, freshman
SF: Shaedon Sharpe, junior
PF: Brandon Boston Jr., senior
C: Isaiah Jackson, senior
We're going with a smaller lineup here, although coach John Calipari has plenty of options here with at least 10 players who are either pros or future pros on the roster (including Rob Dillingham and Justin Edwards as freshman this year).
(5) ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE
PG: Mark Sears, senior
SG: J.D. Davison, junior
SF: Josh Primo, senior
PF: Brandon Miller, sophomore
C: Noah Clowney, sophomore
Alabama made the real Final Four this year, but that may have been hard to repeat. That is, unless they added an uber-talent like Brandon Miller back into the fold. Even as a sophomore, Miller would be one of the best players in college basketball. He'd have some solid athletes around him, too, depending on whether Josh Primo would be eligible or not.
FINAL FOUR
(4) CONNECTICUT HUSKIES
PG: Andre Jackson Jr., senior
SG: Jordan Hawkins, junior
SF: Stephon Castle, freshman
PF: Alex Karaban, sophomore
C: Donovan Clingan, sophomore
UConn has been the class of the NCAA for the last two years, and those two units combine for a very strong group here. This team would return Andre Jackson Jr., Jordan Hawkins, and Adama Sanogo from the 2023 title team.
(3) ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS
PG: Anthony Black, sophomore
SG: Ricky Council IV, senior
SF: Moses Moody, senior
PF: Jordan Walsh, sophomore
C: Jaylin Williams, senior
The Razorbacks would have a ton of talent in the backcourt, with sophomore Nick Smith Jr. coming off the bench as a microwave scorer. Inside, they don't have tons of size but they do have some athleticism and switchability -- making this starting five a true handful.
(2) DUKE BLUE DEVILS
PG: Jared McCain, freshman
SG: A.J. Griffin, sophomore
SF: Jalen Johnson, senior
PF: Paolo Banchero, junior
C: Mark Williams, senior
The Duke Blue Devils would have the beastliest frontcourt in college basketball, highlighted by Paolo Banchero. Even behind these starters, they'd have Dereck Lively II and Kyle Filipowski in reserve. Night to night, they could dominate inside. The biggest concern with the team would be a reliance on younger guards like Jared McCain, Tyrese Proctor, and Dariq Whitehead (who is injured again).
(1) GONZAGA BULLDOGS
PG: Jalen Suggs, senior
SG: Nolan Hickman, junior
SF: Julian Strawther, senior
PF: Graham Ike, junior
C: Chet Holmgren, junior
Gonzaga doesn't have boatloads of NBA-level talent from a depth perspective, but they make up for it with good balance on both ends. Chet Holmgren in particular is a matchup nightmare given his unique ability to protect the rim on defense and stretch the floor on offense. I'd also give Gonzaga high marks for coaching and chemistry, as Chet Holmgren and Jalen Suggs were high school buddies back in Minnesota. Having played together for three (hypothetical) years now, they'd be a well-oiled machine by now. That said, the reliance on that 1-2 punch (as opposed to depth) may make this team vulnerability to foul trouble.
Gonzaga would be my pick anyway, but feel free to disagree with that or any of the other picks below.

2024.03.27 20:15 samsungjello Ranking the Top 52 Eurovision Song Contest Countries since 1975: The Next Five (#47-#43)

Hello again! Another week closer to Malmo as we continue the countdown of the Top ESC countries of the last 49 years! This time we will cover the next five countries, and as you will see we are starting to get countries with more consistent participations, so these scores are getting higher! However, of the five countries here, three of them did not take part in last year's festivities for a wide range of reasons, while the other two don't have many stand out entries in their time here (well at least scoring wise, ESC songs can be famous for many reasons). With that being said, let's introduce the next five ESC nations!

The Countries

Placement Country Score --------- --------------- ------- 43 Albania 34125.262 44 North Macedonia 33628.037 45 Georgia 30233.307 46 Monaco 27535.495 47 Belarus 15597.3
Like I said, the points will really start to pick up, as we are getting to more nations that not only have participated much more, but have picked up better results over that time period. The "newest" ESC nation here would be Georgia, and they have been apart of the festivities since 2008 (nearly 20 years ago!). They are in front of Monaco and Belarus, with the former having not participated since 2006, and the latter having not participated on this side of the pandemic. In front of Georgia lies North Macedonia, a late 90's baby of the competition who haven't made much noise outside of a BIG outlier that represents a good majority of their score. And leading this pack is consistently middle pack Albania, who HAVE found their identity in ethnic bops and nationalistic staging, who lead with the most amount of triple digit scores (AKA songs that did really well in scoring, you'll see) along with Monaco.
Some Notable Artists (during the time period): Eugent Bushpepa (Albania), Caline (Monaco), Mary Christy (Monaco), Eldrine (Georgia), Diana Gurtskaya (Georgia), Kaliopi (North Macedonia), Koldun (Belarus), Karolina (North Macedonia), Rona Nishliu (Albania), Albina and Familja Kelmendi (Albania), Sofia Nizharadze (Georiga), Sopho (Georgia), Juliana Pasha (Albania), Toše Proeski (North Macedonia), Elena Risteska (North Macedonia), Anjeza Shahini (Albania), Sophie (Monaco), Nina Sublatti (Georgia), Tamara Todevska (North Macedonia), Michèle Torr (Monaco), Olivier Toussaint (Monaco), Laurent Vaguener (Monaco)

Worst Years

Belarus 2006 Polina Smolova - Mum

Contest Ranking: DNQ (22nd 2nd Semifinal) My Rankings: 35th (0.683)
The worst preforming song of this bunch comes from Belarus in the form of "Mum", their 2006 entry sung by Polina Smolova. There is not much known about Polina Smolova, except that she got her start singing in children folk bands when she was younger, and that after this performance she would try and fail to represent Russia twice, including one entry dedicated to Michael Jackson.
Ah yes, speaking of performance, this song is... fine I guess. I don't really get the costume design, the staging, or even what this song is about. I guess it fits the mood of music at ESC at the time, I don't really know, or care for that matter. And I guess the audience agrees with that sentiment, finishing second to last of the semifinal, and third to last in my rankings, as it did slighty better than Andorra (0.401) and Malta (0.209).

Monaco 2004 Maryon - Notre planète

Contest Ranking: My Rankings: 33rd (0.708)
Monaco's second stint at Eurovision was clearly not as fruitful for them as their first, pinpointed by having their bottom three entries in this ranking from their last three attempts in this competition (2004, 2005, 2006). This was marked off by this disco number preformed by Maryon Gargiulo (aka just Maryon) in their first year back in ESC for 25 years. Coming back, Monaco decided to choose an artist internally, picking the French artist from a pool of 500 applicants. She would sing a song about saving the Mediterranean Sea, which would earn points with Monaco's Prince Albert. It did not, however, win points with the audience. It's an alright up tempo song, but it lacks personality, and it doesn't stand out from a field of 30+ others. Now according to the ESC Wiki, some people think that France's decision to not broadcast the semifinals that year contributed to this one's NQ. I would blame it on the fact that only three countries thought that this song deserved to go through, but that's me.

Georgia 2021 Tornike Kipiani - You

Contest Ranking: DNQ (16th 2nd Semifinal) My Rankings: 36th (0.867)
Georgia has always been lurking around at Eurovision. They wade in the water, don't make too many splashes (like in 2010, '07, and '11), and they can always be relied on for a nice filler song at their worst. That is how I feel about their 2021 entry, named "You" by Tornike Kipiani, who got a second chance to preform at this contest after COVID denied him of appearing. Now, I actually think that his 2020 song is better, it just fits more of my jam than this one. But there is something calming about this, like I'm having a slow jam out on the floor late at night, when the lights are about to go down, it's the last dance of the night, and the DJ wants to send the party out on a good note, so he puts on the smoothest jam possible...
Oh sorry, I got a bit carried away. Now where was I. Oh yes, at ESC '21, the first after lockdown, Kipiani would preform 10th in the second semifinal. 10th is where one would like to be at the end of the night, as they would advance to the final. 10th is also an optimal position to advance from too, as I feel like the song was good enough for the final. 10th is where I would put it, but sadly that is not how the public and the juries saw it. The public were actually nicer, giving him all but 1 of his 15 points that year, landing its place at the bottom of many duds for this country.

North Macedonia 1996 Kaliopi - Samo ti (Само ти)(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kINdUog9_04)

Contest Ranking: DNQ (26th Preselection) My Rankings: 27th (0.994)
Now this isn't all that bad, having your first ever entry be the one at the bottom of the list is impressive, considering the struggles of many of the 90's countries during that time. Marking the debut* of the country would be Samo ti by Kaliopi, who would go on to represent N. Macedonia 2 more times in 2012 and 2016. Kaliopi is a Macedonian born singer, who would go on to make a band called "Kaliopi", which would dissolve around the same time her former country, Yugoslavia, did. She then made a return to compete for the chance to represent her newly made independent country in 1996, in which the juries and the public awarded her 1st place. However, this edition of ESC was different, as the countries had to send in an audio only version of their entries to be judged and sent through to the Grand Final. With the influx of new countries that year, this soulful tune didn't make the cut, finishing 26th in the preselection. Now the EBU doesn't count this as their official debut, which would be 1998. I consider this part of the ESC process, which includes qualifiers like this one, so it counts for me. Kaliopi wouldn't be the "first" to represent her country, but she would go on to become famous in the Balkans, and as said before represent North Macedonia properly in a Final in 2012 and 2016.

Albania 2014 Hersi - One Night's Anger

Contest Ranking: DNQ (15th 1st Semifinal) My Rankings: 33rd (1.313)
Last but not least would be Albania, who have been lurking in the middle of the ESC pack since their arrival, really only known for their ethnic bops and dramatic staging, which includes having their national colors in the background on several occasions. This performance does not have this however, only featuring a national emblem tattoo on the singer, which would be Hersjana Matmuja, known as Hersi. Hersi has had a decorated carrer as a singer songwriter, including being in a Little Mermaid dub, winning prizes for her rendition of songs, and earning the title of Maestro after graduating. She would definately be qualified for a contest like this, receiving the right to represent Albania in Copenhagen in 2014. I really do like how she sings this song, especially with the chorus, it's like she really puts an emphasis on it, which I think works well. However that was not the resounding sentiment around the song, as it had mixed reviews, which turned out to be a sign of things to come as this ballad placed 15th of 16 countries in its semifinal, and 33rd/37 in mine.

Best Years

Belarus 2007 Koldun - Work Your Magic

Contest Ranking: 6th My Rankings: 6th (201.427)
Looking at Belarus' track record, this entry seems like a huge anomaly. It would not only be the single time where the country placed in the top 10, but also the only time they recorded a score of over 50 for a single year (For reference, Albania's score for 2010 was 53.056, so that should give you an idea of how below average the rest of Belarus' songs have preformed). It's the only reason that they are not part of the First Five, and it comes in the form of this up-tempo record preformed by former Russian talent show winner Dmitry Aleksandrovich Koldun, also known as just Koldun. Koldun was born in Belarus during the reign of the USSR, and his early life was bumpy as he had to experience his parents divorcing. His claim to fame would be through a Russian singing show called Fabrika Zvyozd, in which he would win by utilizing his personality, because he knew that how one behaved on camera would be important. He took this sucess to ESC, as he would later win the chance to represent Belarus for the competition. He was initially going to sing a song called "Get Up" or "Get Up, Get Down" according to the youtube video. However, that song violated ESC rules, as the EBU state that one cannot release a song commercially that they want to send to the contest before a certain date (that would be October 1st). Luckily, the five time "best selling Russian artist" and producer Phillip Kirkorov would offer Koldun another song, titled "Work Your Magic", to which Koldun would accept, and the rest would be history!
It is said that this title is a pun of Koldun's name, as "Koldun" in Russian means "magician", and honestly, that is the vibe I get from this performance. It literally starts by Koldun appearing from behind 2 white pillars as two women provide "assistance" throughout the number. I think what makes this song stand out is the way Koldun sings throughout the song, especially in the chorus. It's just the way he says "WORK your MA-gic", which makes it more rememberable for me. Koldun really sells this preformance, as he sings about how his lover has so much power over him, like magic. This whole song really sounds like a magic act, complete with the women I mentioned earlier "suspending" themselves over the white pillars. It definately stands out, as it also captures a similar trend that Russia were doing, which was being as flashy as possible (which would get them the prize in 2008). This would work for Belarus, as this song scored high in many Eastern European countries. It wouldn't land quite as well with the Western counterparts, as only 3 of them (Portugal, Malta, and Iceland) would give Koldun any points. Luckily, this year, as was the case for several years in the 2000's, would be ruled by Eastern Europe, as the top ten would be occupied by countries east of the Mediterranean Sea. This one would slide into 6th in both mine and the show's rankings, as it would receive max points from five nations (Armenia, Israel, Ukraine, Russia, and Moldova).

Monaco 1978 Caline and Olivier Toussaint - Les Jardins de Monaco

Contest Ranking: 4th My Rankings: 4th (204.313)
And now we go back about 30 years prior to 2007 for this tune sent in by Monaco about Monaco. This principality was a mainstay in the younger days of ESC, punctuated by a victory in 1971 by Séverine with her song "Un banc, une arbre, une rue", a contest classic. The end of Monaco's first run in the competition would be marked by 3 straight top five finishes (and one 16th place finish), including "Les Jardins de Monaco", preformed by our first duo to make this list, Corinne Sauvage (known as Caline), and Oliver Toussaint. The former already tried to compete in this competition a year prior for her birth country of France under a different pseudonym, "Corrine Colbert", but she was rejected. She would then join in a duet under her old pseudonym with established artist Oliver Toussaint, who had already composed a former ESC song for Monaco the year prior, called "Une petite française", which finished 4th. The reason why these two were paired up, I have no idea, but duo's were much more prevalent in older ESC's compared to today, especially in the year 1972, which was the year of romantic duos. This song could be placed in this category, as this one speaks more about childhood innocence and romantic hijinks, taking place in the titular gardens of Monaco. The duo also sing about famous people who could have met there as a secret rendez-vous, like Romeo and Julliet, or Charlie Chapin*. This is a classic 70's ESC song, full of the typical beats from a song from this era. I don't have much else to say but that this song is a pretty enjoyable 70's song. It's up beat, happy, and definately something you can vibe along with (just like the winner that year, Israel's "A-Ba-Ni-Bi (א-ב-ני-בי)"). It also helps that this song was in French, and that the language still had its pulling power during those days (though for not much longer).
It's a bit peculiar talking about a song like this, as it represented a time when any country** under the right circumstances could win the contest, even the tiniest ones, like Luxembourg and Monaco. That would soon cease to be the fact in the 90's, then brought back in bunches during the 2000's, and it seems like we are getting to that point again where any country could win again with any language they want, which is always a good thing. But anyways, this song would repeat Monaco's 4th place success from the previous year, repeated again the following year, but then after that never to be done as the country pulled out for 25 years, flunk in the semifinals, and then disappear again into the Monégasque night.
** Ok that part might not be exactly true, as countries had to bend and twist themselves to get results (see Norway 1985, Sweden 1984 & 1991), especially during the language rule days.

Georgia 2010 Sofia Nizharadze - Shine

Contest Ranking: 9th My Rankings: 5th (210.818)
Georgia at the beginning of their ESC run were able to pull off some good results in their first two entries, just being outside the top ten in both attempts. 2009 would mark the end of that run however, as they weren't able to compete due to the content of the lyrics in their entry "We Don't Wanna Put In", which is a thinly veiled reference to Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin in the aftermath of the South Ossetia war between Russia and Georgia.* After having to skip 2009, they came back with a vengeance in 2010, selecting Sopho "Sofia" Nizharadze, who has had prior experience working in musicals and various international contests. The song she would sing would be titled "Shine", chosen from a pool of six possible entries in their national final. This is your standard ballad, enhanced by the red dress and attire that Sofia would wear, along with Swarovski crystals, which look like this. Her singing is the main highlight of this song, as you can really hear her range during this performance. In a year with a lot of simplicity (capped off with the simple staging of Germany winning them the competition), and a lot of ballads (this would be the third straight ballad in the running order), I truly believe that it was Nizharadze voice that got her so many points that night, as she received something from 25 out of the 38 possible countries, landing her in the top five of my rankings. This would mark the end of Georgia's successful run, as they would only sniff the top ten once after this year, as they are still searching for the elusive magic that carried them in 2010.

Albania 2012 Rona Nishliu - Suus

Contest Ranking: 5th My Rankings: 4th (203.394)
Coming in at second of this bunch is Albania's entry in 2012, the fondly remembered track preformed by the Kosovo-Albanian singer Rona Nishliu. This entry comes off the back of several disappointing entries for the Balkan country, with their best performance in 7 previous tries being 17th at the final (2008, 2009). Those entries came after Albania's first performance, "The Image of You" sung by Anjeza Shahini, which got them 7th in 2004. This song, which is an Albanian-language folklore inspired ballad, comes from an emotionally charged background, involving "reflecting on the moments that occurred in the past and the expectations of unsure tomorrows", which focuses more on Nishliu's personal background, having to flee her home city due to the Balkan wars in the 90's. One could tell that this song is emotional, if only for the famously known high note she achieved during the performance, not once but twice done. This song does very well in making you focus on the music, even if you can't understand the lyrics, which touch up on the topics mentioned before. This was purposeful, as the staging only contains Nishliu on a smoky red stage. It's like a rollercoster, as you really feel every note she sings, leaving you stunned that she can go that high with her voice. It's the unique part of an excellence performance by the lady, etching herself in ESC lore through the process. As the first singer from Kosovo to be in Eurovision, she really leaves her mark in a year that left its mark in the history of the ESC. She would ride her voice all the way to a 5th place finish, the highest Albania have placed in their history at the contest, and one of only two top ten finishes they have gotten to this day. It was a crowning achievement for a country who hasn't impressed like this after this day, so it really puts an emphasis on how special that performance was that night in Baku.

North Macedonia 2019 Tamara Todevska - Proud

Contest Ranking: 7th My Rankings: 4th (420.379)
And at number one for this batch of countries is the most recent one of the five, as it's North Macedonia's entry from the contest in Tel Aviv, titled "Proud", sung by another multi time Macedonian particpant Tamara Todevska, who first competed in 2008. Tamara, like others on this list, was raised in a musical family, with her mom being an opera singer, and her dad being a music professor. She broke through at a music festival in 2003, which led to her eventually releasing her first album in 2005. This would be the launching pad for her to become successful internationally, as she released hit after hit and became commercially successful in the Balkans, which vaulted her into preforming at ESC with Vrčak and Adrijan in 2008, with the song "Let Me Love You", which did not qualify to the Grand Final. This would only be a footnote for her however, as she would continue to gain success in her solo carrer, winning multiple awards for Best Preforming Artist and Best Song. She would eventually come back to ESC in 2019, with a song that would be released on International Women's Day as a feminist anthem, called "Proud", which Tamara describing it as a song for the people that have "been told to put their head down, to follow society’s rules", which makes no sense to her in the 21st century. She would dedicate this song about equality to those people along with her two children, as she wants to illustrate the message of accepting and celebrating yourself, a message that has taken several forms at this competition, especially during the #MeToo movement.
Her voice and singing ability are apparent through this song, as she builds up to the dramatic chorus of "standing up proudly", as in the music video for this song, she showcases several women metaphorically following the song's lyrics. The build in this song is done masterfully, as this ballad really has its power as it goes on. Like I said, her voice is the highlight of the song, as she really makes you believe every word she is singing, which is pretty important in an anthem song. Songs like this with this kind of messaging have the potential to be too pandering or shallow, but that is not the case with this one, as so much emotion seems to be put into this, which most likely sold it to the juries, which was the major reason she placed so high this year. 247 of her 305 points came from the juries, while the audience didn't really think too much of the performance, which I think is a shame. And as you can see with the score up there, ESC scoring with my formula took a bit of a left turn from 2016 onwards, which meant that if an entry did very well with one side of the jury/audience voting, it would most likely be in the top 10, which reflects the actual scoring method of the competition. That is why she placed 4th here, because she did really well with the juries, as she was #1 in the jury vote, brought down by her 12th place finish with the public. You will see more of these kinds of jumps with a lot more entries that were more polarizing with its scoring, because I wanted to emphasize what they did well in, while still rewarding those they did well in both. This song has proven to be an anomaly though for North Macedonia, as they have not come *close** to repeating this finish, with their second placed entry in this time period only having a score of 58.254 (2007).

Final Thoughts

So another five countries down, who do you think will come next? Which entry here is your favorite? (mine's is Suus) Which entry do you think deserved better? (I think "You" should have qualified) How long do you think it would take for Albania or Georgia to win a ESC? (I predict by 2040, just because it feels right.)

2024.03.20 19:15 _Gibby__ MOCK DRAFT 1.0

Tankathon was used for lottery order Notes: - This is not a big board, just a reflection of the direction I think each team will (not necessarily should) go on draft night. - Due to the lack of solidified top talent in this class, I weighed fit and team needs more heavily.
  1. Memphis Grizzlies - Alex Sarr, NBL Memphis doesn’t have many needs for next season assuming everyone is healthy. Ja, Bane, Smart, JJJ, GG, Vince Williams, Kennard, Aldama, and Clarke are all going to get plenty of minutes. I think they’d be better off trading down and getting Clingan to be their next Steven Adams, but assuming they keep the pick, Sarr is the best player available. As the old saying goes, “the only thing better than 1 long athletic seven footer with wing skills is 2!”
  2. Washington Wizards - Stephon Castle, UConn Now depending on how the Wizards view Jordan Poole long-term, this pick could easily end up being one of the Kentucky guards. But with Poole around, this team will really need a big guard who can guard up in the lineup and distribute the ball. Enter Stephon Castle, who has chance to really juice his stock this March if he can help UConn repeat as national Champions. Castle could offer the Wizards a mix of point guard skills, versatile defense, and star potential that they desperately need.
  3. Portland Trailblazers - Zaccharie Risacher, France Portland moves up in this lottery and lands a true sharpshooting forward to pair with Scoot. Risacher will also provide much more resistance on the defensive end, something Portland is desperately in need of. His offense could really open up the floor and his long term potential should have Blazers fans excited for the post-Dame years.
  4. Detroit Pistons - Cody Williams, Colorado As much as I want to give the Pistons a player I think will bust cough cough Topić cough cough I have to assume that their front office is at least marginally competent. And in this case, the obvious choice is Cody Williams. Williams can contribute immediately as a 3 and D wing, something Detroit desperately needs. If you are a believer in his long term potential like I am, then this pick could really turn the Pistons fortunes around. Maybe not immediately though.
  5. San Antonio Spurs - Matas Buzelis, G League Ignite Despite all of the point guard talk around the Spurs, I think their real issue is on the wing. Julian Champagnie shouldn’t be starting, but right now the Spurs are limited to just Vassell and Sochan as quality wing options. While I think KyShawn George could be a better player in 4 years, Buzelis is the most NBA ready prospect on the board while also fitting a need.
  6. Charlotte Hornets - Reed Sheppard, Kentucky Charlotte has 2 legitimate pieces in Ball and Miller, but what they lack is the connective pieces. Sheppard is one of the best you could ask for. His lights out shooting should pair perfectly with Ball’s elite vision and his ability to take on lead guard duties should decrease the team’s reliance on Ball’s health.
  7. San Antonio Spurs - Nikola Topić, Serbia With their second pick in the top 10, I think the Spurs would draft their best player available, which is likely Topić. While I am very wary of him, the Spurs have a top notch player development staff that could help his game grow. Having already secured a safe pick in Buzelis, the Spurs can afford to get risky here and swing for the fences.
  8. Houston Rockets - Isaiah Collier, USC Houston has had a lot of top picks in recent years and have developed a solid young core with Sengun, Green, Thompson, Smith, Whitmore, and Eason. However the one thing really lacking from that core is a traditional point guard. Enter Collier. Fred Van Vleet is an excellent veteran and could provide great mentorship to Collier. While Amen Thompson has incredible upside as a potential point guard, having Collier would be great insurance and the two could definitely play together. Collier’s size and wide frame give him lots of potential on the defensive end as well, something Ime Udoka will certainly help with.
  9. Utah Jazz - Ron Holland, G League Ignite Danny Ainge is one of the best evaluators of top talent in NBA history, often because he always has an eye on the top high school prospects early. So with this pick, I’d say it’s a good bet that Ainge will take Holland if he’s available. Holland is a great athlete who’s dominant in transition, although he struggled with efficiency in the half court in the g league. Holland will fit in with Will Hardy’s fast paced offense perfectly and has the potential to grow into a star, though it’ll take time.
  10. Atlanta Hawks - KyShawn George, Miami With this pick, I’m giving the Hawks the highest upside player available. The Hawks are stuck as a franchise right now. They desperately need more perimeter defense, something George can provide right away. Offering an intriguing mix of shooting and lead ball handler potential, George could be a real difference maker if his potential is realized.
  11. OKC Thunder - Donovan Clingan, UConn OKC assembles the Cream Towers, by pairing Chet’s length with Clingan’s strength. There’s a lot to love about Clingan’s game and the fit with OKC is about as perfect as it gets. His ability to set monster screens could make Shai even more unstoppable. Geez the more I think about this the more I hope he gets drafted earlier.
  12. Chicago Bulls - Tidjane Salaun, France The Bulls are just weird. Coby White is seemingly the only player on that team right now that is likely to still be there in 2 years. If they are finally ready to rebuild, taking the highest upside player available should be the plan. Salaun offers an exciting blend of size, athleticism, and shooting with the potential to grow into a star. The Bulls desperately need to break out of their eternal 10 seed rut and Salaun gives them hope for a brighter future.
  13. Portland Trailblazers - Dalton Knecht, Tennessee With their second lottery pick, I think the Blazers will continue to look for shooting, and Knecht is one of the best shooters in this class. His ability to shoot off of movement could give the Blazers a new wrinkle to their offense.
  14. New Orleans Pelicans - Rob Dillingham, Kentucky Finally! Robwitdashifts is hands down the most fun player to watch in this class. However his size will be a real concern among teams. The Pelicans have a great example for him to learn from in CJ McCollum, and fast breaks with him and Zion will break the internet. But underneath all the flash, Dillingham understands the little things it takes to win. He has active hands on defense, boxes out, fights for rebounds and loose balls, etc. He’s also been very efficient this year at Kentucky, showing his game isn’t just for show. The improvements he’s shown as a playmaker and passer this year hint at some rare potential.
  15. Miami Heat - Jamal Shead, Houston This pick just feels like a match made in heaven, or for me (Celtics fan) hell. Terry Rozier is good, but the Heat could use a true point guard. Shead fits their mold to a T. Undersized but strong, great defender, high basketball IQ, fantastic character. It makes me sick.
  16. Toronto Raptors - Kyle Filipowski, Duke The Raptors have Poeltl right now, but Olynyk is a free agent. Filipowski could replicate much of what Olynyk does offensively, while offering more potential. Filipowski would be a perfect fit for Darko Rajakovic’s .5 offense.
  17. Philadelphia 76ers - Ja’Kobe Walter, Baylor Philly will likely want to trade whoever is picked in order to get more near term support for Joel Embiid. Drafting Walter is betting on teams holding value in his top prospect status, helpful if the Sixers need to make a mid season trade. He also provides shooting which is always needed around Embiid, so he has a chance to get time if he sticks around.
  18. Phoenix Suns - Nique Clifford, Colorado State The Suns are in desperate need of perimeter defense. An upgrade on Jusuf Nurkić should also be on the list, but with limited draft capital, that’ll have to be a free agency problem. In Clifford, Phoenix gets a lot of what it lost in Mikal Bridges. Perimeter defense, shooting, and all around good play defines Nique. Phoenix would be a great fit.
  19. New York Knicks - Johnny Furphy, Kansas The Knicks are always going to be thin due to Thibs refusal to manage minutes. Adding a versatile big wing would help them best cover whatever injuries they’ll face over the coming years. While Furphy is raw, his long term potential is exciting.
  20. Atlanta Hawks - Yves Missi, Baylor Clint Capela has been in decline for a while now, and as much as I love Onyeka, he’s not the biggest. Missi has the potential to offer everything Capela offered and more.
  21. Orlando Magic - Ryan Dunn, UVA Dunn is an elite defender who has flashed some offense, but is a potential liability on that end. The Magic shouldn’t care as they have plenty of offense already. Dunn could give the Magic nightmare defensive potential with Suggs, Isaac, Black, and Carter. If they can develop the shot or anything offensively, the Magic will have a steal.
  22. New York Knicks - Devin Carter, Providence Carter has the motor, defense, and toughness Thibs requires from his players. He plays bigger than his size, and Thibs will certainly throw him out there at the same time as McBride or Brunson. His deep range from three and strong cutting skills make him a great fit with the Knicks.
  23. New Orleans Pelicans - Tyler Smith, G League Ignite Smith offers an attractive skill set for modern bigs as he has good rim protection, perimeter defense, and three point shooting. While he hasn’t shown much else, he should be a solid player.
  24. Washington Wizards - Kel’el Ware, Indiana The Wizards need a center for the future after trading away Daniel Gafford. Kel’el Ware offers the most upside of any big available, and honestly is one of the most talented players in the class. The questions about his mentality are concerning, but if you’re the Wizards you need all the talent you can get.
  25. Cleveland - Kevin McCullar Jr, Kansas Cleveland needs lot of wing help if they they plan on keeping the Mitchell and Garland duo together. McCullar has the experience to settle into a role in the rotation earlier than younger prospects might. And for Cleveland, the pressure is starting to mount.
  26. Milwaukee Bucks - Jared McCain, Duke The Bucks could use some more guard depth, and I’m not sure they’re willing to trust TyTy Washington enough to give him a shot. McCain is a hard worker with a silky voice and even silkier shot. He could immediately contribute as a floor spacer and ball handler off the bench. He offers some long term potential too with his self creation ability and playmaking.
  27. Denver Nuggets - Daron Holmes, Dayton Zeke Nnaji hasn’t developed as the Nuggets had hoped, but Daron Holmes gives them a potential answer for non Jokic minutes. Holmes’ blend of shot blocking, perimeter defense, lob threat, and three point shooting make him an ideal big in this day and age.
  28. Minnesota Timberwolves - Tyrese Proctor, Duke The TWolves are in a great spot as a franchise, but Mike Conley isn’t getting any younger. Proctor offers high upside at point guard due to his size, passing, and shot making ability. He might not see the floor much early, but he could blossom into a great floor general for Ant in the future.
  29. Utah Jazz - Justin Edwards, Kentucky Once again, count on Danny Ainge to draft top high school recruits. Hopefully Edwards turns out better than James Young.
  30. Boston Celtics - Kwame Evans Jr, Oregon Brad Stevens has done a fantastic job assembling this Celtics roster. Based on his previous picks, I think they’ll go with another young, defensive minded prospect in KJ Evans. Evans basketball IQ, defensive versatility, and shooting potential are incredibly valuable as the C’s look to continue their success for years to come. Boston has the talent in place to wait on Evans’ development and could be rewarded handsomely in the future.

2024.03.14 21:58 rt9o Arik Armstead is 31 this year, has been battling foot & knee injuries the past couple seasons and is set for offseason knee surgery. DT draft class is deep...

Based on Armstead’s outlook, it’s very likely he required a meniscus repair, which, for those with meniscus injuries, is a less common procedure that results in a longer recovery. Repairs, which are usually performed arthroscopically, the damaged tissue is mended with stitches and that tissue needs about three months to heal. The recovery timeline for a repair is often 4-6 months.
Julian Blackmon, Justin Simmons, Kamren Curl are still out there and may be a better use of remaining cap space. DT, CB, WR is deep this draft and we could easily fill those spots in the early rounds. Nick/DeMeco about to go out and pick up another offensive/defensive rookie of the year duo 😤
