‼️ 😭 💔 My heart is shattering, this is an urgent plea to save Gandalf: a gentle, leash-trained sweetheart who has stolen the hearts of the volunteers, especially Lisa who works with numerous dogs. 🐾 Gandalf has been a joy to everyone he meets, with not a single bad thing to say about him. Despite his loving nature, he’s past due and faces euthanasia any day now, could be tomorrow, sadly. 😢 The thought of losing him is devastating. 2024.05.16 00:13 lotravelstheglobe Help me pick a second island!

Hello! I am traveling to the Azores in late June with my 11 y.o., adventure-loving son. We are traveling from CA and will have 1 full week there before heading onward to Lisbon. I know many will say to just stay in Sao Miguel the whole time, but we would like to go to 2 islands, San Miguel and 1 other. We will rent a car both places. Please help me choose what our second island should be.
Our top priorities:
Hiking: We are avid, experienced hikers. We regularly do hikes of 15+ miles at high altitudes on rough terrain with no problem.
Snorkeling/Sea Life: We really want to snorkel, specifically to see mantas/mobulas and anything else great that comes our way. My son is a competitive swimmer and has snorkeled all over the world in deep water.
General water adventuring: We would love to drive around and see/swim in waterfalls and swimming holes.
Nice-to-have but not essential:
Mt. Pico: We don't *have* to climb Pico if that will eat up more time that it's worth and keep us from enjoying other places and adventures.
Whales:
Beach bumming
Hot springs
So, we are up for some beautiful adventures with views and animals! We are so excited. I've read a lot on these forums and have narrowed it down to a few options:
1) Sao Miguel + Pico (or vice versa - going directly from PDL to PIX the day we arrive and then coming back). This would include Siete Ciclades, Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo, Princess Alice (Mantas+Mobulas), maybe Pico hike etc. etc. and leave some time for exploring.
1 a) Sao Miguel + Pico + Terceira. This would involve just flying to T the last day because there is a good flight to LIS the morning we need to leave. We would use that night to attend the Sao Joaninas festival in Angra do Heroismo.
2) Sao Miguel + Santa Maria (or vice versa). This would include more time for Sao Miguel stuff + mantas and whale sharks and whatever else there is to do on Santa Maria.
I know that is a ton of text/information so if you've made it thus far, thank you!!! Based on our priorities/non-priorities, what would you recommend? Many thanks for any expertise you are willing to lend.

2024.05.15 21:31 Maddiystic PSA: If you're trying to graduate and haven't heard anything yet, check your status

Hey folks,
Just posting a reminder to anyone here who's trying to graduate but haven't heard anything yet to make sure you still are listed as "potentially eligible" to graduate.
Copy or click the link below, then scroll down and press "Verify Your Graduation Status".
https://registrar.yorku.ca/graduation/eligibility
If you are listed as ineligible to graduate and aren't sure why, check your degree progress report:
https://web3prod.sis.yorku.ca/yda/student
Look for the red text on the page to see if there's an issue.
Do this ESPECIALLY if you are in EECS: EECS 2011 is renamed EECS 2101, and there's been some issues with the system thinking that degree requirements have not been met if you took EECS 2011 and it wasn't flagged when the degree requirements were updated. It's a quick fix, let Lassonde Advising know and they'll have degree audit update it.
If for some reason you're ineligible to graduate but can't figure out why, now's the time to contact your faculty's academic advising and/or student advising at the registrar's office. You can do so for the registrar's office and certain faculties through QLess.
Best of luck to everyone!

Stage breakdown

With tomorrow’s stage, the peloton will keep travelling northwards towards the Alps; unlike yesterday, however, they won’t stick to the seaside, but they will venture inland. They’re not going to be too far from the coastline- the stage will never reach 300 m above the sea level- and yet it’s not going to be an easy day! The riders will have to tackle a number of muri, short but insidiously punchy climbs. The stage will nearly entirely develop within Marche; only the first 3 kms take place in Abruzzo.
The first 50 kms will feel like a stage 11 deja-vù, as they will take place along the coastal highway. Once the race reaches Civitanova Marche, however, the course will head towards the hills and the course will get pretty rolling as the succession of muri will begin. The first couple of them are not categorized, while the third one- leading to Recanati, the beautiful hilltop town where poet Giacomo Leopardi lived- will have an intermediate sprint at the top rather than a KOM.
The riders will pass through Castelfidardo, a town known worldwide for the manufacturing of accordions… and in cycling, for an amazing 2021 Tirreno-Adriatico stage which saw Van der Poel going up 1v1 against Pogačar. The first KOM of the day, in Osimo, follows soon after; an uncategorized muro follows, and then there will be a short relief for the riders before the course picks up again, with the Monsano, Ostra and La Croce walls- the three remaining KOMs for today- coming in quick succession. Along the latter, the riders will also find the Intergiro sprint in Ripe.
The penultimate wall leading to Mondolfo ends with the remaining intermediate sprint of the day, whereas the very last climb- Monte Giove summits with 9 kms to go. The last 7 kms are flat, and the finale takes part on urban roads, with a 90° bend coming with 500 m to go.
Much of today’s stage takes place on Michele Scarponi’s training roads, and riders and commentators will undoubtedly pay homage to him. The (retroactively awarded) 2011 Giro winner, a peloton jester and a priceless domestique, beloved by fellow riders, fans and even parrots, Scarponi died when he was struck by a distracted driver whilst training on April 22, 2017.
With all this in mind, here are our predictions for tomorrow's stage:
★★★ Early breakaway
★★ Late attack
★ Pogačar, Ewan

Rider discussion

Tomorrow's stage looks like perfect terrain for a breakaway. It's a day that shouldn't have major GC implications, so the peloton might approach the stage with a relaxed attitude, but the rolling course should encourage a strong break to go clear.
Some of the names we brainstormed for the break: of course we've got Jhonatan Narváez and Maximilian Schachmann, who have been brilliant on short punchy climbs in this Giro so far; the course should also play to Julian Alaphilippe's strengths, but he's been a bit underwhelming this Giro so far. EF has plenty of riders who might have a say on a course like this (Michael Valgren, Andrea Piccolo, Georg Steinhauser), and past Brabantse Pijl winner Magnus Sheffield might enjoy this kind of course too. With Uijtdebroeks now gone, Visma riders such as Attila Valter and Jan Tratnik could also try to go on the attack tomorrow. Last but not least, young Italian climber Giulio Pellizzari hasn't quite had the breakthrough race so far, but he deserves a mention as he's local to this area so he might find himself at ease on this kind of course. If the early break is not too strong, we can see things regrouping; in that case, many of the riders above can also win from a later attack or from a reduced peloton.
We doubt that tomorrow we will have a race so hard that we'll be left with only the GC guys, but should it come to that the main favourite is yet again Tadej Pogačar, who could either power away on a climb and stay at large or win from a reduced bunch sprint. Daniel Felipe Martínez also has the potential to do well, but he'll be closely marked by his rivals. Romain Bardet should enjoy tomorrow's short, punchy climbs, but it's hard to picture him winning.
Last but not least, we're also naming Caleb Ewan as a potential winner. He doesn't really stand a chance but we wanted to honor this comment about our bad take from yesterday :p
That's it from us, what are your thoughts/predictions?

Ảnh: Adam Dean/The New York Times.
Ảnh: Adam Ferguson/The New York Times.
Ảnh: Al Drago/The New York Times.

Hi, we've had this ktm watch in our family for over a decade now, and its just been sitting in a cupboard for all that time. I hope to be able to figure out what this watch is exactly, but my research has been inconclusive so far.
A few years ago, i went to my local KTM dealer (in Germany) and after a lot of searching we couldn't quite figure it out, apart from confirming it was indeed from the early 2010s.
The closest i got was this, now no longer working website, which claims a very similar looking watch to be a "montre ktm chrono limited". http://www.miril.be/site/montre-ktm-chrono-limited-2379/
Some history on the watch: It was given as a gift during the opening of a new ktm production facility in malaysia in the early 2010s, 2011 if i remember correctly. A family member received it from the ktm staff and since then its been unused in the box.
I understand its probably not that good in terms of build quality and complexity (feels weighty and solid, tho im no watch enthusiast), but it does have a sentimental value, as well as possibly some rarity value (for this kind of cheaper watch that might not matter, not sure). I downloaded several broschures from the time, and while some watches are similar with their font and design, none are the same. Since then, the watch was put back in the cupboard and forgotten about, until today.
There is no additional documentation with the watch or on the box.
I'm not much of a watch or KTM enthusiast, so i hope someone here can help out.
Thanks.

2024.05.14 20:20 burritocaca How did the community conclude that Image 1 refers to San Francisco?

Hi, guys. I'm posting this (with the SF flair) to try to understand how the community got to SF from Image 1 specifically. If I missed something, please point out where and a source and I'll correct it.
  1. In February of 2004, user Egbert posts that he had thought the image in Moon Goddess's hair to be the number 88, but the loops weren't closed. I think he was looking at a poor scan of Image 1 at this point, which would've made other possible patterns that could represent numbers difficult to see.
  2. In April of 2004, user Fox posted that he noticed that Image 1 contained the coordinates for SF, specifically the I-II-II and I-II-III symbols at the top of the robe. (He doesn't account for any of the other symbols at this point, just that these in particular match SF's longitude range.) For the latitude number (38), Fox counted the blue squares on her sleeve. He doesn't account for any of the other squares in any other location of the image, or whether their count has any significance. By this point, according to fox, Image 1 was thought to refer to SF Chinatown "because of the Chinese robe". User fox does not seem to consider that Los Angeles, for example, was also a major entry point of Chinese immigrants.
  3. Later that month, user maltedfalcon says "Without a shadow of a doubt this image is San Francisco" and that "The 38 122 lon/lat numbers were a nice confirmer". User Egbert acknowledges in the thread that the number 38 is coming from counting the squares on her sleeve.
  4. The next month, there's some discussion about the '88' pattern looking "like a tilted '38'". It's here that maltedfalcon says that "you can overlay the rectangle on the map [of Golden Gate Park] and it fits exactly." There's some discussion that suggest similarities of the GGP landscape and Image 1. User maltedfalcon appears to be the first to suggest here that Verse 7 is a match for Image 1.
  5. In April 2005, User Aces88 mentions that the reversed G-h in Image 1 looks like the first two letters of the Ghirardelli sign from behind the sign. This is the best image I could get from behind the sign. I'm heading to SF this week, and will hopefully grab a better picture while there. Update: I just got back from SF where I was able to get this picture of the sign from behind.
  6. In June of 2005, User forest_blight mentions the pattern that looks like the number 37 on the other side of Moon Goddess's hair. User forest_blight does not seem to consider that the three digits 0, 3 & 8 (and even a few 7s and 2s etc.) would appear many times in a depiction of curly hair.
  7. In June of 2010, forest_blight mentions the similarity of Image 1 and Leonardo Da Vinci's Virgin of the Rocks. In 2011, User slappybuns mentions that Da Vinci had painted Virgin of the Rocks for San Francesco Maggiore in Milan.
  8. In August of 2016, User WhiteRabbit offers up a picture of a cable car bell resembling the bell shape on top of the clock in Image 1. In February of 2018, User Goonie68 mentions the cable car resemblance (I think for the first time, but given how the post reads it seems like it may have been discussed in another thread.) Around the same time, User WhiteRabbit is mentioned as believing that that outline in Image 1 is Lotta's Fountain in SF's Lafayette Park (how it looked in 1980).
  9. The thread continues with various theories connecting Image 1 with SF that I won't post here. No other city is given much if any credence as a possible match for Image 1 in the thread that I can see.
  10. In the Six years in San Francisco podcast, we hear for the first time (I think) about Preiss's widow, Sandi Mendelson, recalling their first date being at the Tonga Room, which is a bar in the Fairmont Hotel in SF. George Ward and Brett (I think) spend the podcast explaining a theory based on the Fairmont Hotel being the starting point of the hunt. They do not explain why they continue to use Verse 7, which has been rooted in Golden Gate Park since maltedfalcon's post in May 2004 mentioned above. Brett (I think) then states that "[Their matching the Image 1 rose to the original Fairmont logo] set afoot us looking at things in the image and matching them up with things." They also mention that SF has a Fairmount District and more than one Fairmont building. The podcast continues with them looking at things in the image and matching them up with things near the Fairmont Hotel, still with the assumption that Verse 7 somehow still applies now that their search has moved away from Golden Gate Park. (I'm still looking for an original source for Sandi's interview.
I'm still adding stuff, so please let me know what else is convincing you that Image 1 goes with SF.

2024.05.14 14:41 The_ghost_of_spectre Dadaab Refugee Camp: A Challenge for Kenyan Security

The Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya has been plagued by numerous terrorist activities, primarily attributed to the presence of Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate in Somalia. The camp, which hosts over 211,000 refugees, mostly from Somalia, has become an area of concern for terrorist activity. due to the lack of effective security measures and the presence of armed bandits and Islamist militias.
The escalation of attacks by Al-Shabaab has prompted UNHCR and its partners to significantly scale back their operations in the camps. The Kenyan authorities have imposed a curfew in the camps and have deployed more police, with reports of mass arrests and beatings of refugees during police sweeps for Al-Shabaab fighters.
The ability of Al-Shabaab to operate within the camps and in surrounding areas such as Garissa seems to confirm the fears of many Kenyans, who believe that Dadaab is being used as a base for militants. An opinion piece in one of Kenya's largest newspapers, The Daily Nation, compared Dadaab with the refugee camps set up in Goma in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide: Dadaab presents a huge threat to Kenyan security. Like Goma, the refugee camp is probably crawling with militia. What better way for Al-Shabaab to penetrate Kenya's borders than to become refugees within our borders? R. Warah, Dadaab Refugee Camp Poses a Huge Threat to Kenya's National Security, The Daily Nation, 23 October 2011.
The presence of armed bandits and Islamist militias, as well as periodic outbreaks of clan feuding, means that the threat of violence against humanitarian workers is very real. The UN mission in Dadaab operates under UN phase three security restrictions stipulating travel by convoy and with an armed police escort, no free movement of staff without armed guards in the camps, and a curfew for humanitarian workers, who have to be in a secure compound from 6 pm to 6 am.
The Kenyan government has accused refugees of being a security threat and Dadaab the operational base from which Al-Shabaab launches its attacks. However, human rights groups have termed the repatriation program as far from voluntary, accusing the Kenyan government of scapegoating refugees and failing to provide concrete evidence for its claims.
The Kenyan government faces a significant challenge in balancing its responsibility to protect its citizens with its humanitarian commitment to refugees. Dadaab has strained resources and created security concerns, particularly with the presence of Al-Shabaab. The government prioritizes the safety and security of all within its borders and views the repatriation of refugees as a key step towards achieving that goal.
The situation has been further exacerbated by the ongoing drought in the Horn of Africa, which has led to thousands of repatriated Somali refugees returning to Kenya's Dadaab refugee camp to seek relief. The Kenyan government's ban on the registration of new refugees has left these returnees without access to aid programs.
The Dadaab refugee camp has become a volatile situation due to the presence of Al-Shabaab and the lack of effective security measures. The camp has been plagued by numerous terrorist activities, and the Kenyan government's efforts to repatriate Somali refugees have been met with significant challenges and criticisms.
