2024.05.13 16:14 Leather_Focus_6535 The currently 124 offenders executed by the state of Oklahoma since the 1970s (warning, graphic content, please read at your own risk) [part 1, cases 1-62]

This is the list that I wrote for Oklahoma's execution roster since the nationwide reinstatement of capital punishment in the late 1970s. Something that should be mentioned is that given the nature of many death penalty related crimes, many of the descriptions contain very disturbing details. Please read at your own risk.
Florida's list is next, and I'll post my list for Texas once I've completed it. With Texas, I've currently finished 464 entries out of the 587 cases to date. That will probably take 7 or 8 posts for it all to be released, so I'll probably do two posts a day with Texas to avoid spamming the sub. At the end of this year, I'll repost the states that have conducted further executions with the updated information.
As with Missouri and Virginia, Reddit's maximum character count limitations forced me to divide Oklahoma's list into two separate parts. Here is the link to part 2.
The currently 124 executed offenders, cases 1 to 62:
1. Charles Coleman (~1950s-1990, lethal injection): A month after he was released on parole in 1979, Coleman broke into a house. While sacking it for any valuables, the homeowner’s brother and sister in law, 68 year old John and 62 year old Roxie Seward, walked in on him and were both shot dead. Coleman stole Roxie’s purse, several packets of frozen meat, and the homeowner’s watch during the burglary, and was arrested shortly afterwards. However, Coleman managed to escape custody, and went on a rampage that involved several burglaries, auto thefts, slitting the throat of a policeman in a failed murder attempt, the shooting death of 49 year old Russell Lewis Jr. in a carjacking, and the abduction of a deputy. The kidnapped deputy was rescued following an armed standoff with other police officers. Coleman had an extensive history of animal cruelty, armed robberies, assaults, and carrying concealed weapons convictions dating back to when he was 11 years old. He was also heavily suspected in the murder of his teenage girlfriend’s father, but was acquitted by the courts despite the prosecution’s strong belief in his guilt.
2. Robyn Parks (1977-1992, lethal injection): During a gas station robbery, Parks shot and killed Abdullah Ibrahim, a 24 year old Bangladeshi immigrant that worked as the attendant. According to Parks, he murdered Ibrahim for catching him using a stolen credit card.
3. Olan Randle (1980-1992, lethal injection): Randle invaded a home and shot the occupants, 41 year old Robert Swinford, Sinford's fiance 42 year old Averil Bourque, and Bourque's friend 38 year old Julia Lovejoy, dead. He took a pocket knife and several watches from the victims.
4. Thomas Grasso (~1970s(?)-1995, lethal injection): While living in Oklahoma, Grasso strangled 87 year old Hilda Johnson, the best friend of his girlfriend's grandmother, to death with her Christmas lights. He took $8 from her purse, several coins that added up to $4, and a television set that he sold for $125. Grasso then moved to New York, and strangled 81 year old Leslie Holtz for his social security check. The trialing arrangements caused some controversy, as the New York governors at the time were anti death penalty, and tried to prevent Grasso's extradition in favor of giving him a life sentence in their jurisdiction. Grasso had several previous convictions for theft and was fired multiple times for stealing from his jobs.
5. Roger Stafford (~1974(?)-1995, lethal injection): Stafford was condemned for killing at least 9 people in two separate robbery incidents with his brother and ex wife, though his ex wife claimed that he was involved with as many as 34 murders nationwide. The first convicted incident was when he and the ex wife carjacked and fatally shot a couple, 38 year old Melvin and 31 year old Linda Lorenz, and their son, 12 year old Richard. A few weeks after the Lorenz murders, Stafford stormed a restaurant and gunned down 6 employees, 56 year old Isaac Freeman, 43 year old Louis Zacarias, 17 year old Anthony Tew, 17 year old David Lindsey, 16 year old David Salsman, and 15 year old Terri Horst. One of Stafford's additional attributed victims was 20 year old Jimmy Berry, who was killed in the hold up of an Alabaman McDonalds, but he wasn't charged by the state due to his death sentences in Oklahoma.
6. Robert Brecheen (1983-1995, lethal injection): Breechen was involved in a feud over money with 59 year old Mary Stubbs and her husband. In an attempt to take what he perceived was owed to him, Breechen carried out a night time burglary of their home. While rummaging through the house, Breechen stumbled upon old Marie in her living room and shot her to death. The gunshots and screams awoke her husband, and he chased him away with his own gun.
7. Benjamin Brewer (1978-1996, lethal injection): Brewer raped his neighbor, 20 year old Karen Stapleton, in her home and stabbed her to death
8. Steven Hatch (1979-1996, lethal injection): Hatch and another assailant, Glen Ake, forced themselves inside the home that Richard Dougass, a 43 year old reverend, shared with his wife, 36 year old Marilyn, and their two children, 16 year old Brooks and 12 year old Lesile. The pair tied up the family and raped Lesile in front of her parents and brother. All four family members were shot, and Hatch and Ake ran off with $43 and the parents’ wedding rings. Richard and Marilyn were both killed in the shootings, while their children survived the attack. Ake was also initially condemned for the attack, but his sentence was overturned and resentenced to life following mental health concerns, and passed away from undisclosed natural causes in 2011.
9. Scott Carpenter (1994-1997, lethal injection): In a convenience store robbery, Carpenter stabbed the owner, 56 year old A. J. Kelley, in the neck, and hid the body in the minnow room. He filled his truck with $37 worth of gas from the pumps and drove away from the scene. His execution caused some controversy, as it was reported that Carpenter gasped and spasmed for 11 minutes after being injected.
10. Michael Long (1997-1998, lethal injection): Enraged that his coworker, 24 year old Sheryl Graber, refused him sex and started screaming for help, he stabbed her over 31 times. Long also shot and killed her son, 5 year old Andrew, for being a witness.
11. Stephen Wood (1992-1998, lethal injection): While heavily intoxicated, Wood stabbed two other homeless men, 46 year old Charles Stephen and 34 year old Charles Von Johnson, dozens of times each. He was given a life sentence for both of their murders. During his incarceration, Robert Brigden, a 59 year old former minister that was serving a 40 year sentence for molesting several girls between the ages of 4-14 in his congregation, moved into his unit after refusing to go into protective custody. Woods killed Brigden in a stabbing attack, and his sentence was escalated to death by the courts for it.
12. Tuan Anh Nguyen (~1982-1998, lethal injection): By all accounts, Nguyen was jealously possessive over his wife, 21 year old Donna. During one of their arguments over his behavior, he stabbed Donna, her 6 year old nephew Joseph White, and her 3 year old niece Amanda White, in their home and left the bodies to be found by the children’s parents. He fled to Arizona, groomed a 14 year old girl into an illicit “relationship”, and impregnated her. After he convinced her to move in with him, Nguyen physically and sexually abused the girl until she fled and went to the local police for help. Nguyen was then deported back to Oklahoma to face trial for Donna and the White children’s slayings, and was sentenced to death for them.
13. John Duvall (1986-1998, lethal injection): During a fight with his wife, 30 year old Donna, Duvall stabbed and suffocated her to death with a pillow.
14. John Castro Sr. (1983-1999, lethal injection): Castro carjacked Beulah Cox, a 31 year old Oklahoma State University student, after she picked him up hitchhiking and shot her to death. A few months later, Castro held up a restaurant with an empty pistol, and attacked the manger, 29 year old Rhonda Pappan, after forcing her to open the register. During their struggle, Pappan was fatally stabbed, and he took off with her purse. During his mid teens, Castro was allegedly molested by his mother. Castro's attorneys made the argument that his glimpses of Cox's buttocks reminded him of his mother's reported abuse, and he was triggered into attacking her for it.
15. Sean Sellers (1985-1999, lethal injection): In 1985, a then 15 year old Sellers tried to buy beer from a convenience store, but the clerk, 32 year old Robert Bower, denied him due to being underaged at the time. Sellers gunned him down in a fit of rage. A year later, Sellers shot and killed his mother, 32 year old Vonda Bellofatto, and stepfather, 43 year old Paul, in their sleep. Due to being 16 at the time of his conviction, Sellers remains the youngest condemned offender to have his sentence carried out in the post Furman era. He also attracted national media attention for claiming that his crimes were the result of demonic possession.
16. Scotty Moore (1983-1999, lethal injection): Moore was fired from a motel for undisclosed reasons. In retaliation, Moore and a cousin (whom he was dating at the time), assaulted the motel, and gunned down the desk clerk, 42 year old Alex Fernandez. According to court documents, the pair took a total of $97 in the robbery.
17. Norman Newsted (1984-1999, lethal injection): Newsted tricked Lawrence Buckley, a 26 year old cab driver, into picking him up. He shot Buckley dead and took his wallet. In an attempt to cover his tracks, Newsted placed the body inside the cab, and drove it into a creek near a local church. Despite his best efforts, Buckley’s cab and remains were discovered a day later by the church’s pastor.
18. Cornel Cooks (1982-1999, lethal injection): Cooks and his accomplice broke into the home of 87 year old Jennie Ridling. She was gagged, raped, and suffocated to death with gauze wrappings. According to autopsy reports, the pair abused her for over 2 hours. They then sacked the house for any valuables and left with her checkbook.
19. Bobby Ross (1983-1999, lethal injection): While robbing an inn, Ross fatally shot a police officer, 30 year old Steve Mahan, that tried to intervene.
20. Malcolm Johnson (~1970s(?)-2000, lethal injection): Johnson invaded the apartment of 76 year old Ura Thompson and sexually assaulted her. Thompson either died from having her chest compounded during the abuse or was suffocated by Johnson’s hands covering her nose. He seized several possessions such as furs, typewriters, purse, watch, rings, and a hand mirror, which were discovered by police in his residence during an unrelated investigation of a firearms possession charge. Johnson had an extensive criminal history, which included several convictions of rape, armed robberies, and burglaries. The case attracted controversy when it was discovered that the lead chemist in the investigation misconducted several of her other cases, and forged some of the evidence used in the trial. Despite the other overwhelming evidence to the contrary, Johnson’s supporters took the opportunity to push a narrative of his innocence.
21. Gary Walker (~1960s-2000, lethal injection): Walker abducted, raped, and murdered at least 5 women, 36 year old Margaret Lydick, 35 year old Jane Hilburn, 32 year old Janet Jewell, 25 year old Valerie Shaw-Hartzell, and 24 year old DeRonda Roy, and non fatally assaulted several other women and teenage girls. The victims were mostly strangled to death with their bras and panties. Some of them were forced to withdraw hundreds of dollars from ATMs before they were killed. He also strangled a man, 63 year old Eddie Cash, with an electrical cord while robbing his home. Walker had dozens of previous convictions for burglary, carjacking, drug possession, and carrying concealed weapons. Some of his earliest arrests occurred when he was a teenager.
22. Michael Roberts (~1988-2000, lethal injection): A career burglar, Roberts was condemned for murder of 80 year old Lula Brooks. She was raped and her throat was slit by an intruder in her home. Roberts' death sentence and execution has been contested, as he was convicted on his later recounted testimony alone. He claimed that the investigators tricked him into confessing with the promise of a plea deal that was allegedly withheld from him.
23. Kelly Rogers (1990-2000, lethal injection): Rogers’ girlfriend lured 21 year old Karen Lauffenburger into her apartment with a fake pizza order. They accosted her when she arrived with the delivery. After the couple forced Lauffenburger to hand to over the $40 she earned from the night's pizza deliveries and withdraw $175 from an ATM, Rogers raped and stabbed her to death. The body was left in Lauffenburger’s apartment and was found by her boyfriend.
24. Ronald Boyd (1986-2000, lethal injection): During a robbery spree of several gas stations and supermarkets, Boyd engaged in a shootout with the responding officers. A Master Patrolman, 32 year old Richard Riggs, was killed in the exchange.
25. Charles Foster (~1980s(?)-2000, lethal injection): Foster suspected a grocery store owner, 74 year old Claude Wiley, of making sexual advances at his wife. He arranged for her to entice Wiley to their home with an order. When he arrived with the delivery, Foster stabbed and bludgeoned him to death with a baseball bat. He a history of convictions involving threats and violence, though my sources didn’t disclose any specific details.
26. James Robedeaux (1978-2000, lethal injection): In 1978, Robedeaux strangled his first wife, 30 year old Linda, and plead guilty to a second degree murder charges. He was released after serving 6 out of a 25 year sentence despite an escape attempt. In the following year, he began a relationship with 37 year old Nancy McKinney while he married a different woman. During an argument, Robedeaux beat McKinney to death, dismembered her body with a saw and machete, and scattered the remains across the state. While being investigated for McKinney's murder, he was arrested for choking and beating his estranged second wife. The cases were incidental and kept separate by the courts.
27. Roger Berget (~1985-2000, lethal injection): Berget carjacked and abducted 33 year old Rick Patterson with an accomplice, and shot him dead. He also admitted to the beating death of a roommate, 40 year old James Meadows, on the behalf of the man's wife. As a trivial side note, Berget's brother Rodney was executed in 2018 by the state of South Dakota for killing a prison guard [for more information, please see Rodney Berget's entry under the South Dakota section of my states with less then 10 executions post].
28. William Bryson (1988-2000, lethal injection): To collect a $300,000 life insurance policy, Marilyn Plantz recruited her boyfriend Byrson and his friend to kill her husband, 33 year old James. Byrson and his friend ambushed Plantz in his house as he was coming home from work and beat him to death with a baseball bat. With the intentions of staging an accident, Marilyn ordered the pair to burn the body in the couple's pickup truck.
29. Gregg Braun (1989-2000, lethal injection): Across several states, Braun shot and killed 4 women, 48 year old Geraldine Valdez, 31 year old Gwendolyn Miller, 28 year old Mary Rains, 27 year old Barbara Kochendorfer, and one man, 54 year old Pete Spurrier, while robbing stores.
30. George Wallace (~1970s-2000, lethal injection): Known as "the Mad Paddler" due to his habit of spanking abducted preteen and teenage boys with a wooden paddle, Wallace kidnapped his victims by posing as a police officer. After duping his targets into thinking that they were being arrested, Wallace restrained them with handcuffs and leg chains. The captives were then sexually abused and shot or stabbed to death. His crimes were exposed when an 18 year old man he abducted escaped from him despite being shot and stabbed numerous times. By his own admission, Wallace murdered 18 year old Thomas Reed, 15 year old William Domer, 14 year old Mark McLaughlin, 14 year old Jeffrey Foster, and 12 year old Alonzo Cade.
31. Eddie Trice (1987-2001, lethal injection): Trice snuck into the home of 84 year old Ernestine Jones and raped her. After he beat Jones to death with numbchucks, he terrorized and extorted her cognitively disabled son of $500 with threats of killing him if he told anyone of the murder. The son was also assaulted with a hammer, and he received injuries to his right eye, right cheekbone, and his right forearm.
32. Wanda Allen (~1981-2001, lethal injection): In 1981, Allen got into a fight with her live in girlfriend, 21 year old Dedra Pettus, and shot her dead. Despite giving a bungled story about her being accidentally killed in a shootout with Pettus’ ex boyfriend to the investigators, Allen managed to secure a 4 year sentence for manslaughter after pleading guilty to a plea deal, and was released after serving two years. While incarcerated, she started dating a fellow inmate, 29 year old Gloria Leathers, and continued their relationship outside of prison. The couple’s relationship was marred with extreme domestic violence on Allen’s end. In one incident, Allen struck Leathers with a rake. In 1989, while they were arguing in front of a shopping center, Allen shot and killed Leathers. Leathers herself also had history of violence, and had a conviction for stabbing a woman to death. Allen and her defense team tried to use Leathers’ previous convictions to make a self defense argument, but that was shot down by the courts.
33. Floyd Medlock (1990-2001, lethal injection): 7 year old Katherine Busch went to visit her family's old apartment, which Medlock was residing in, by herself. Busch knocked on the door and Medlock let her inside after she begged for food. He then choked and sexually assaulted the girl, dunked her head in a toilet bowl, and stabbed her to death. The body was hidden in a nearby dumpster. Busch's grandmothers were staunch pro capital punishment and anti death penalty activists respectively, and their public feud over Medlock's sentence and execution attracted some media attention. Medlock also had an extensive criminal history despite being only 19 at the time of Busch's murder, and was previously arrested several times for indecent exposure, arson, armed robbery, and marijuana possession.
34. Dion Smallwood (1992-2001, lethal injection): Smallwood walked into the home of his ex girlfriend's adoptive stepmother, 68 year old Lois Frederick, without invitation. He had a tumultuous and often violent relationship with her adopted stepdaughter that she strongly opposed, and they broke up under her pressure. After an argument, Smallwood knocked Frederick unconscious with a croquet mallet, locked her in a car, and burned her alive in it.
35. Mark Fowler (1985-2001, lethal injection): To get back at his ex employers for firing him, Fowler and his partner, Billy Fox, stormed a supermarket that he used to work out. The pair rounded up 3 employees, Chumpon Chaowasin, a 44 year old Thai immigrant, 33 year old Rick Cast, and 27 year old John Barrier, at gun point. Their hostages were shot, clubbed, and stabbed to death, and they took over $2,7000 in cash and checks.
36. Billy Fox (1985-2001, lethal injection): Fox assisted the above mentioned Mark Fowler in robbing a supermarket and murdering 3 of its employees
37. Loyd Lafevers (1985-2001, lethal injection): Lafevers and his accomplice, Randall Cannon, kidnapped 84 year old Addie Hawley from her home. She was raped, trapped in the trunk of a car, and burned alive in it. Although she was rescued, Hawley died from her injuries 6 hours later. The pair stole Hawley's wedding ring and Lafevers gifted it to a stripper. As Hawley's nephew was a Colorado state senator, her murder gained some attention from media outlets.
38. Dorsie Jones Jr. (1979-2001, lethal injection): While drinking at a bar, a barmaid chastised Jones for carrying an unconcealed gun. He shot at her in a fit of rage, but missed and injured his female companion instead. Jones then turned his attention to the other patrons and fired on them. 48 year old Stanley Buck Sr. was killed in front of his 19 year old son, who was also wounded in the shooting.
39. Robert Clayton (~1980s-2001, lethal injection): Clayton attacked 19 year old Rhonda Timmons while she was sunbathing near her apartment. She was raped, stabbed, kicked in the head, and strangled to death with her swimming suit. Her husband found Timmons' body laying next to their infant daughter, who was left unharmed. Clayton had a previous rape conviction in Tennessee and a robbery conviction in Texas.
40. Ronald Fluke (1997-2001, lethal injection): Out of despair that his gambling addiction drove his family to near poverty, Fluke shot and killed his wife, 44 year old Ginger, and their daughters, 13 year old Kathryn and 11 year old Susanne, while they were sleeping in their bedrooms. He initially attacked Ginger with a hatchet, but turned to shooting when she fought back.
41. Marilyn Plantz (1988-2001, lethal injection): The married girlfriend of William Bryson. As mentioned under Bryson's entry, Plantz arranged for him and his friend to kill her husband James to collect his life insurance policy.
42. Terrance James (1983-2001, lethal injection): While awaiting trial for a theft of government property charge, James and two accomplices strangled a fellow inmate, 25 year old Mark Berry, with wire out of their suspicions of him being a snitch. They then hung the body in an attempt to make it look like a suicide. Berry was another party in the theft of government property case, and James and his accomplices believed that it was his testimony that got them arrested.
43. Vincent Johnson (1991-2001, lethal injection): Johnson gunned down 44 year old Shirley Mooneyham in her home. The prosecution believed that Mooneyham's boyfriend arranged the killing to collect a life insurance policy, but he was acquitted at trial.
44. Jerald Harjo (~1980s-2001, lethal injection): Harjo snuck into the bedroom of 64 year old Ruth Porter, raped her, and suffocated her with a pillowcase. He then snatched Porter's car keys and drove off with her van. His past criminal history was extensive, and was in prison numerous times for burglary and autotheft.
45. Jack Walker (1988-2001, lethal injection): Disgruntled with the custody dispute over their then 3 month old son, Walker stabbed his ex girlfriend, 17 year old Shelly Ellison, and her uncle, 30 year old Donald, 32 and 11 times with an ice pick during a confrontation at their home.
46. Alvie Hale Jr. (1983-2001, lethal injection): Hale kidnapped 24 year old William Perry to extort a $350,000 ransom from his banking family. When the negotiations failed, Perry was shot dead, and Hale buried the body on his father's property.
47. Lois Smith (1982-2001, lethal injection): Smith, her son, and a female accomplice abducted her son's ex girlfriend, 21 year old Cindy Baillee, from an airport out of fear her testifying of his involvement in the drug trade. Baillee was taken to Smith's ex husband's house, and stabbed in the throat by her ex boyfriend while driving to their destination. Inside the home, she was taunted by Smith with a gun, and was shot 7 times in the chest and 2 times in the back of the head. While her son was reloading the gun, Smith jumped on and crushed Bailee's throat.
48. Sahib Lateef Al-Mosawi (1992-2001, lethal injection): Following a dispute over their newborn son's name, Al-Mosawi's estranged wife, 26 year old Inaam Al-Nashi, fled to the apartment of her uncle, 45 year old Mohammed. Al-Mosaw attacked the pair in the apartment and stabbed them to death. Inaam's sister was also stabbed, but she managed to escape with her life. The couple and their families were refugees from Iraq that were displaced by the First Persian Gulf War, and they fled into the United States.
49. John Romano (1985-2002, lethal injection): Romano and his accomplice David Woodruff robbed and murdered two of their acquaintances. One of the victims, 63 year old Lloyd Thompson, was attacked in his apartment. Thompson was held down by the pair while they stabbed him 22 times and served his spinal cord. The other victim, 52 year old Roger Sarfaty, was tied up, beaten, stabbed 5 times, and strangled to death in a jewelry store he owned. In the robberies, Romano and Woodruff stole several pieces of jewelry from Sarfaty, and took most of Thompson’s quarter collection.
50. David Woodruff (1985-2002, lethal injection): As mentioned under John Romano's entry, Woodruff took part in the robbery murders of Lloyd Thompson and Roger Sarfaty.
51. Randall Cannon (1985-2002, lethal injection): Cannon assisted Loyd Lafevers in abducting, sexually assaulting, and burning Addie Hawley alive in her car. Although he was acquitted of molesting Hawley, Cannon was still condemned for his part in the kidnapping and murder.
52. Earl Frederick Sr. (~1989-2002, lethal injection): Frederick beat Bradford Beck, a 41 year old veteran that was crippled during his service in the Vietnam war, to death in his home after befriending him. He ransacked the house and dumped Beck's body in a field. A second murder, the robbery and shooting death of a Texan man, 77 year old Shirley Fox, was also tied to him. However, authorities in Texas withheld from prosecuting Fredrick due to his death penalty trial and conviction in Oklahoma. Both Fox and Beck had physical disabilities, which led prosecutors to the conclusion that Frederick intentionally selected and depredated on disabled men.
53. Jerry McCracken (~1980s(?)-2002, lethal injection): McCracken and his accomplice shot up a bar, killed 3 patrons and the bartender, and made off with $350. The victims that lost their lives were 41 year old Carol McDaniels, 37 year old Timothy Sheets, 34 year old Steven Sheets, and 27 year old Tyrrell Boyd. Months before the mass shooting, McCracken was paroled after serving time for stabbing 3 people in a bar fight.
54. Jay Neill (1984-2002, lethal injection): During a bank robbery, Neill disemboweled and nearly decapitated 3 tellers, 42 year old Kay Bruno, 25 year old Joyce Mullenix, and 19 year old Jerri Bowles. A group of 4 customers, consisting of 33 year old Ralph Zeller, a married couple, and their 14 month old daughter, unwittingly walked in on him, and he herded them into a backroom to be shot. Zeller was killed, the couple were wounded, and Neill left the daughter unharmed due to running out of bullets. Neill's boyfriend was given a life sentence for the robbery and murders, despite not being directly involved.
55. Ernest Carter Jr. (~1989-2002, lethal injection): After being fired from an autoshop, Carter robbed it with an accomplice, and fatally shot a security guard, 35 year old Eugene Manowski. The pair stole the shop's tow truck, and later tried to burn it with Carter's girlfriend to destroy any traces of the crime. Carter was also previously accused of burning a friend to death in the previous year, but the charges were dismissed.
56. Daniel Revilla (1987-2003, lethal injection): While babysitting his girlfriend's son, 13 month old Mark Gomez, in their home, Revilla broke the boy’s ribs in a beating and scalded him with boiling water. When he brought the boy to a hospital, Revilla gave a story that he accidentally hit Gomez’s head with a door handle, which was quickly seen through by the staff. According to the accounts of his girlfriend and her family, Revilla was violently abusive to Gomez, and they recounted incidents of him trapping the boy in a kitchen drawer, dunking him in cold water, folding him into a pull up bed, and hanging him by his ankles with duct tape.
57. Bobby Fields (~1990s-2003, lethal injection): Fields shot and killed 77 year old Louise Schem while burglarizing her home. She had tried to shot him with her .25 calibre pistol, but he wrestled the gun away from her, and gunned her down with it. His intentions was to steal Schem's television set to sell for cocaine, but left empty handed after losing his nerves with the struggle and murder. According to court documents, Fields had a previous robbery and assault conviction, and several arrests for drug possession.
58. Walanzo Robinson (1989-2003, lethal injection): A member of the Gangster Bloods street gang, Robinson shot and killed 26 year old Dennis Hill, an affiliate of a rival gang, in a turf war over drug sales.
59. John Hooker (~1971-2003, lethal injection): As a teenager in 1971, Hooker attended a party at a friend's house, and got into an argument. In a fit of anger, he fatally shot 18 year old Alta Lang, and wounded two other partygoers. Due to the witnesses refusing to cooperate with the investigation and being unable to prove any calculated intentions, Hooker was given a manslaughter conviction, and released a few years later. After he was paroled, Hooker started dating Sylvia Stokes, and fathered several children with her. Their troubled relationship lasted for 8 years, and ended when Stokes filed a protection order against him. In retaliation, Hooker lured Stokes and her mother, 53 year old Durcilla Morgan, into his apartment and stabbed them both to death.
60. Scot Hain (~1980s-2003, lethal injection): Hain carjacked and abducted a couple, 27 year old Michael Houghton and 22 year old Laura Sanders. After taking $565 and some bags of clothing, he forced them into the trunk of their car at gunpoint, and burned them alive in it. He had several previous arrests for robbery, and was involved with a number of rapes and attempted kidnappings months before the Houghton and Sanders' murders.
61. Don Hawkins Jr. (1985-2003, lethal injection): Hawkins kidnapped 29 year old Linda Ann Thompson and her two daughters, aged 4 years old and 18 months old, from a mall. Although his original intentions were to ransom off Thompson and her children, Hawkins gang raped the captive woman with his cousin and his girlfriend's teenage nephew, and drowned her in a lake. Thompson's children were spared and simply left with a babysitter. Hawkins and his accomplice then went on a nation wide rampage with his accomplice that involved the abductions and rapes of several grown women and teenage girls, hanging 31 year old David Coupez of Colorado in his home while robbing him, and countless other robberies.
62. Larry Jackson (~1984-2003, lethal injection): In 1984, Jackson shot and killed his girlfriend, 19 year old Freda Washington. He accepted a plea deal that dumbed down the charges to second degree murder, and was given a 30 year sentence for it. During his incarceration, Jackson started a relationship with 29 year old Wendy Cade. Despite her promises of marriage after his release, Cade left him for another man, and they got engaged. When Jackson was assigned to a prison work crew, he snuck out and went to confront Cade. Reportedly, the two had bought alchool, cocaine, and cigerates together and had sex in Cade's apartment. However, they got into an argument, and he slashed Cade's throat and stabbed her 31 times with box cutters. Jackson then left with her jewelry, watch, and the keys to her jeep.

2024.05.10 18:14 FloggingMcMurry Scored the 8-movie Saw steelbook set out of a $5 bin at Walmart (I hesitated posting this) never watched the sequels before

Scored the 8-movie Saw steelbook set out of a $5 bin at Walmart (I hesitated posting this) never watched the sequels before
I wasn't sure if posting this is the end of thing upholding to the sub and the official channels.
I had only ever watched the first Saw years ago when it was newI never watched the sequelsbecauseI alwaysfelt the ending for the first movie was so brilliant that sequels would ruin it.
I have been playing Dead by Daylight for over 5 years now and, of course, The Pig (Amanda) is the killer and copyright-safe Detective Tapp (not at all looking like Danny Glover) is the survivor. New items were added to commemorate the release of Spirial, and we even got an in-game event centered around Saw a few years ago.
I also watched The Corridor Crew make a family friendly G-rated cut of a Saw trailer.
I have watched The Kill Count over the whole franchise when the vids first posted and I grew increasingly curious as years have gone by and I have forgottenthe episodes (I think it was Saw 3D that James liked least). I started feeling like revisiting the first movie again but I never owned it (I had only rented it from a video store)
And this past week this steelbook with all movies up to Jigsaw was laying on the top of the bargin bin at Walmart. I figured it was going to be $32 or $48 or something and I walked it up to the employee, who also assumed someone took it off the shelf and then changed their mind and sat it down as they walked by.
It scanned at $5, we were shocked, he asked if I still want to get it, I said absolutely... so now I have a bunch of movies to watch.
Normally if a movie is spoiled, I don't watch it. I have never seen The Sixth Sense because I was working at the theater when it came out and people were openly talking about that twist ending before I had a chance to see it... so having my own experience with that revelation and re-watching it with that knowledge was robbed from me... I don't feel any of the kills or anything have stayed with me from the Kill Counts, over all the movies and characters I didn't know, to ruin a first time watch... except jokes like Slow Ass Motherfuckin Jeff... .

2024.05.10 16:48 Glacialfury [WP] They say that the Appalachian Mountains are the oldest in the world, a company starts to excavate them and regrets what they found.

The rumble of heavy machinery shivered in the air.
Intermittent blasts of dynamite shook the ground and rode over the metallic chattering of bulldozer treads. Men and women in reflective vests and broad-brimmed hard hats swarmed the area amid dark yellow machines that clawed at the stone of the mountain.
Some said the Appalachians were the oldest mountains in the world, but Hank wasn’t sure how they could know if such a thing was true. What did it matter, anyway? Mountains were mountains.
The wall of jutting stone his excavator hammered at abruptly collapsed inward in an earth-shaking crash that sent up an expanding cloud of dust. Outside on the ground, Jory Florien tossed his shovel to the stones and shouted, “Holy shit!”
Hank was old school. He ran his machines with the door latched open because he liked the fresh air and could better hear his laborers. Rules be damned.
“You guys see that?” Jory said, coughing and waving a hand in the dust and peering into the darkened cave-like opening. “Thought I saw something.”
Jory was a big-time conspiracy theorist, one who believed the moon landing was staged and aliens ruled the planet through puppet regimes. Most of the crew found his stories humorous and entertaining, something to help pass the lunch hour. But all agreed they were nothing more than modern fairy tales.
“Bigfoot?” Amanda Stirl called from the other side of Hank’s excavator. “Or maybe a yeti this time.” She laughed and leaned on her shovel, a sound that was gruff and obnoxious, very much like her.
“Think you're funny?” Jory said, still squinting into the building-sized cavern. “I’m serious, man. I saw something moving in there. Big motherfucker.”
“Man, you didn’t see shit,” Amanda said, shaking her head and spitting chew to the side. Hank’s eyes dropped to the white ring made by the ever-present Skoal can in her back pocket. An unusual thing, a woman chewing tobacco, but Amanda was unusual in a lot of ways. “Get outta here with that shit, Jor.”
Hank opened his mouth to dig one of his own jibes into Jory’s ribs, but the words died in his throat. Everyone went still.
Something stirred within the shadowed depths, a deeper blackness moving within the dark. Something massive. Two crimson lights kindled to life in that darkness, evenly spaced and set about two feet apart. They burned like embers in a thousand-year-old crypt. Hank’s mouth went dry, and he felt the hairs on the back of his neck stir. Something was wrong here, something terrible.
“What the—” Jory took an involuntary step back, and Amanda dropped her shovel.
“Fuck is that?” she said, her voice no longer teasing. “Hank, you saw that shit, right?” She backed away from the excavator’s hammer attachment up near the new opening, two quick, leaping steps through the chunks of stone littering the area. She came abreast of the cab. Her hard hat swiveled up. Hank saw the strain of concern on her face. “You saw it?”
“Yeah, I saw it,” he said, though what it was, he could not say. “We need—“
A deep, guttural growl issued from within the cave, a vibrating rumble as from something huge. A wave of dread swept over Hank that made his blood run cold. “This is not good.”
“Shit,” Jory crouched low, looking very much like a rabbit ready to spring in any direction at the first sign of trouble. “The hell was that?”
“Shut up,” Amanda hissed, snatching her shovel up and holding it out before her like a weapon.
Jory’s retort froze on his lips when a massive, scaled snout emerged from within the darkened opening, two red-coal lights burning in the shadows behind it. A huge, clawed hand stepped out next, followed by a second. Stone crumbled in the taloned grip.
Everyone stood frozen in horrified disbelief as a creature large enough to dwarf a bull elephant pulled its bulk from the cave and straightened to its full towering height. A broad wedge-shaped head topped by sharp horns, glared down at them. The creature’s body was broad and heavily muscled, plated with heavy, red scales. It unfurled great leathery wings on each side with a loud snap and held them wide. A sound like distant thunder rumbled in its chest.
“Free!”
Hank jerked, as did the others, when the thought lanced through his mind. ”So long trapped…free!” Its livid red eyes glared down at them. ”Fools!”
There was the sharp hiss of indrawn breath, like air drawn into a great bellows, and the dragon dropped its head low, body rearing up, claws digging into the stone. Evil laughter echoed in their thoughts.
A stream of molten fire erupted from the creature’s dagger-lined maw, blinding flames that brought the terrible heat of the sun.
Jory and Amanda vanished in puffs of swirling ash. Hank only had time to scream holes in his lungs as the metal around him instantly glowed white-hot, the air shimmering, and his flesh burst into flames.
Darkness took him.
The evil dragon swept its fiery maw back and forth, bathing the area in deadly flames. Hundreds died on the mountain that day—countless more in the days that followed.
What was unleashed upon the world that day deep in the Appalachians sparked the beginning of the Dragon Wars, a global awakening that blackened land and sky—a catastrophic conflict that pushed mankind to the brink of extinction.
It awoke the Age of Dragons.

2024.05.06 15:51 ronlynne Strays, Episode 3 - The List

To hear me read this story click here
-Sixteen Months Ago, 2099-
“Step forward Commander.” Admiral Price reached out to now Captain Gardner, pinning his rank pin to his collar. He saluted and she returned his salute. Normally these things were far less ceremonial, and almost never broadcast on the web, but Captain Gardner was now the face of the STRAYS Project, so ceremony was warranted. They shook hands, smiled for a photo op, then walked out of the camera view. Admiral Price unbuttoned her top shirt button, loosened her tie and took off her hat. “I hate wearing the dress unis. So old school military.”
Captain Gardner smiled, leaving his formal look in place. “Amanda, you are definitely not old school military.” She patted his shoulder as they entered the command center. Across the room in a simulator Commander Klein was directing a newly assembled crew through a simulation. A red light began flashing and an alarm sounded. A flurry of activity as the simulator shook and swayed, then, the light and alarm went off, and the simulator stabilized. Gardner and Price took notice. The pilot was a new addition to the team, Lieutenant Isabella Jeffries. She took a deep steadying breath and looked up, seeing Gardner and Price for the first time, before grinning.
“That was fun!”
Klein looked serious for a moment then smiled. “Not dying in space is fun.” He stepped out of the simulator and greeted Gardner, saluting the Admiral, who waved him off.
“Not necessary in here James.”
Klein turned to Gardner, saluting. “How about you Captain? You finally outrank me.” Gardner returned his salute. Klein laughed, “I feel like you’ve already been ordering me around for months anyway.” He turned to Admiral Price. “As have you, although marrying my uncle does give you a little authority, even without the stars.”
Admiral Price swatted at him. “Careful Commander. You might get busted down to pilot again!”
Gardner pointed to Jeffries, “She seems good, which scenario was that?”
Klein replied, “Rogue asteroid.”
Price looked at Jeffries then back to the Captain, “Maybe you have your pilot?” Gardner nodded as the crew received briefings from the scientists monitoring the simulation.
A cadet entered the room and approached Gardner, saluting. “Captain, I have a message for you. I normally would have filed it away, especially today--” His eyes looked to the Captain’s new rank insignias, ‘--But he said it was regarding your family? Something from the past?”
Gardner took the note and stuffed it in his pocket as the cadet left. He turned back to Klein, “Smart, good pilot, dodged the asteroid, is she the one Commander?” Klein nodded, Gardner continued. “Good, that was taking too long. We launch in a few months, I want a command crew in place.” Gardner turned to the Admiral, “Amanda, I’m going home. Too much ceremony makes me hungry.” He pulled out the note as he left the room.
Gardner shifted in his desk chair. He picked at the remaining food on his plate, trying to decide if he wanted to call the person on the note sitting in front of him. Finally he sat up straight, pushed his empty plate to the side, and fired up his communication center. He entered the email address and hit send. On the computer screen in front of him he looked at the small image of himself as the ‘waiting’ animation looped. Finally the call connected and a young man appeared onscreen.
The young man spoke. “Captain Gardner, thank you for responding.”
Gardner was polite but quick. “Yes, of course, what can I do for you Mister…” Gardner looked at the note, “Mr. Allen?”
“Jeremy Allen. Yes sir. I saw you on TV and it clicked.” Gardner waited impatiently, his association with the STRAYS program made him a celebrity. It was the most hopeful some people had been in years. Jeremy continued, “My Grandfather left Earth before I was born. Four years ago my mother died of cancer.”
Gardner frowned, sadly, a pretty common family tree these days. "I’m sorry Mr. Allen.”
Jeremy smiled, and held up a sheet of paper with handwriting. “My Grandfather was a list maker. Apparently he was borderline obsessed with lists and documenting everything.” He smiled a moment, “My mother passed this on to me. Grandpa made this list of people who were leaving Earth, but hadn’t been able to contact any family. He got it to my mother before he left.” Gardner sat up. Maybe Jeremy had something. Jeremy read from the list. “Was your mother’s name Sophie?” Gardner nodded. “And your mother’s parents were Larry and Kit?”
“Katherine… yes, Kit” Gardner was fully involved now. He waited.
Jeremy continued. “From Minnesota?” Gardner nodded as Jeremy read, “Larry and Kit Jennings, daughter Sophie Gardner, grandson Alex Gardner. They were scheduled to leave on a ship in March of 2065.” Jeremy made a note on his paper. He looked up again at Gardner. “Captain, this has been my life for the past four years. I’m sorry that is all the information I have. I have 26 more to go. I plan to find them all.”
Gardner was in minor shock at the information. He sputtered as he tried to form a thought. “Mr. Allen, can you send me a copy of your list?” Jeremy nodded, Gardner continued. “If it’s all right, I’d like to pass this on to my colleague, Admiral Price. She will contact you and find a way to help. This information may be useful in our program.”
Jeremy sat up, as a weight lifted from his shoulders. In this society people could determine what they spent their time on, although most found a way to work at something they enjoyed. Jeremy had been going through a meticulously collected handwritten list, over 30 years old. It was a nearly impossible task for one man, especially with the lack of historical records, but for the Space Program it could be done easily. Jeremy smiled a tired smile, “Captain, that would be amazing.” His eyes ringed with tears, “I would be so happy to finish this list. It's my family’s small legacy.”
Gardner examined the list as it printed out in from of him. Around 60 lines, with names and years. Many checked, but the remaining 26 Jeremy mentioned still waiting. “Jeremy, this is amazing. You have no idea what this is worth. Don’t be surprised if people are moved by your story.” Jeremy sat up straighter and wiped his eyes. Gardner talked as he read, “I will keep all these people in mind while we’re out there, maybe we’ll find them all and reunite some families.”
-Present Day, 2100-
Captain Gardner smiled as he approached the Captain of the Starlight. It was the seventh ship they had found, small, only 24 passengers, and barely enough fuel and supplies to succeed. “Captain, do you have a passenger manifest?”
The Starlight Captain pointed at a wall near the cockpit where a clipboard hung. “On the clipboard, such as it was. It’s just names and pod numbers.”
Gardner smiled and thanked him as he walked over. He pulled down the clipboard and scrolled through, he stopped, smiled, and replaced the clipboard. Turning back to the storage area he scanned for Chen, spotting her near a bank of pods. “Lieutenant!” He walked over to her. “Everything good?” She nodded. He continued, “I’m looking for pods 17 and 19?”
Chen looked at him curiously. “We haven’t gotten to them yet. These are homemade sleeper units, and it’s a bit tricky reviving them. 17 and 19, probably in about 90 minutes.”
Gardner smiled. “Great, call me when you get to them!” With that he nearly skipped away. Chen watched him stop for a quick word with Klein, who seemed just as excited.
Chen spoke before Klein could ask for a progress report. “Commander, what’s all that about?”
Klein answered excitedly. “He found some people on his list.”
“His list?”
Klein hesitated, “Oh, he didn’t tell you? Well, I guess I can. Right before we launched a guy named Jeremy Allen sent the Captain a list. It had the names of people who had left Earth without being able to contact their families, to let them know they’d made it onto a ship. As they investigated, the list grew to over a hundred names between the first list and another that turned up right after.”
Chen recalled something, “That’s why he checks the manifest of every ship we find.”
Klein nodded, “Yep, he’s checking to see if he can cross any names off. This is the first.”
Chen furrowed her brow, “But I watched him look at the last one, he didn’t have a list with him, he just looked it over and shook his head.”
Klein smiled, “He memorized the names, the people who had shipped off planet, their families, any other details. They’re in his head.”
Chen whispered, “Amazing.” Klein turned but Chen stopped him. “Commander, we’ll need radiation scrubbers and treatment for the passengers. This ship is heavily irradiated. Our inoculations should protect us, but I’ll need everyone to get tested when we leave.”
Klein answered, “Are we taking any supplies?
Chen shook her head. “Personal items only, and limited at that.”
“Which pods?”
“Sir?”
“Which pods did the Captain ask about?”
“Oh, right, 17 and 19. Probably in a bit over an hour”
Klein walked over to pods 17 and 19 to see who the Captain’s first names were off the list.
As people come out of hibernation a few things always happen. First is a brain fog, confusion, then the coughing starts. Once that shakes off they blink, realizing their vision is blurred. A few moments later and they’re ready to stand, although it’s not easy at first, much like a baby giraffe, off balance, unable to control your knees. Fortunately if the pods weren’t equipped with an automatic shot, the medical team can provide the adrenalin. It’s not just adrenalin, there are a variety of medications and they work very well, but it still takes around 10-15 minutes before a person really knows what is happening.
As Steve Brennan came around his first look was for his wife Melissa, who was just a few moments behind him in recovery. He made his way to her carefully and they embraced. Both for love and balance. Captain Gardner approached them. “Hello, I am Captain Alex Gardner. You’ve just come out of hibernation. The year is 2100 and we are from Earth. You will certainly have many questions, but please be patient, we want to make sure you’re in good shape, then we can explain what is happening.”
A doctor came up to them, and gave them a quick look over. Gardner spoke, “You are Steve and Melissa Brennan?” They both nodded, Steve still coughing a little. “Do you recall meeting a man who was keeping a list of people who wanted to contact their families before they left?”
Melissa looked thoughtful. She turned to her husband, “We did, what was his name, Alan or something?”
Steve cleared his throat, “Dan Allen.” He paused, “Captain, we certainly haven’t made it to Proxima 2. Not this quickly.”
Gardner nodded, “That is correct, and I promise we’ll explain soon. Right now we’re getting everyone up and awake. We are trying to move quickly because this ship is heavily irradiated. But don’t worry, we have the medications now to clean that up.”
Steve and Melissa nodded OK, as people moved around them, quickly, but not rushing. Captain Gardner spoke again. “I am sorry to say I was only able to find one person on your list, your nephew Carl. But, he and his wife Deanna are looking forward to seeing you. If you’ll come with me, I can take you to the medical bay, and answer a few questions. There’s a lot to tell.”
Back in his quarters, Captain Gardner opened a communication window to send a message to Earth. He spoke into the transcriber. “From Captain Alex Gardner, UEF Shepherd. “To Carl and Deanna Brennan. “Dear Carl, I am happy to say I have located your Aunt and Uncle. They will be sending a message shortly, once they have been checked out by our medical team. If you’d like to send a message please go ahead. Admiral Price will be in contact as well to confirm.” Gardner checked the message and sent it. He sat back, looking up at the list, hanging on his wall.

2024.05.04 22:19 dwags_24 What's the Most Money You've Achieved in Story Mode? (Guide)

What is the most money that you've made in story mode, without cheating, across all 3 characters? If you've ever done a max money run, let me know how much you made in the comments! I just made about $20.8 billion combined. That is not a typo... Michael ~$9.4B, Trevor ~$5.8B, Franklin ~$5.6B
This post is a guide on how to maximize your money at the end of the game. I know there's other guides out there sharing the same info, but I haven't seen one complete list. I've went through all the various guides and compiled every detail that was perhaps missed in one guide or another. Is it necessary to have infinite money? Absolutely not, but if you want to do it anyways, here's what you need to do:
Here is the exhaustive list of missions and events that earn you money and when you need to complete them by throughout the story. If a random event is available to all 3 characters, Michael won't need it as he ends up with the most money. You'll want to purchase the Sonar Collections Dock with either Franklin or Trevor (I chose Trevor), and whomever doesn't purchase this property will be the one that should collect the rest of random choice money. It's easier to earn money by targeting security vans (and you should hit all 10 at least once… and anytime when they appear) but if you're doing a completionist run like me, might as well collect the smaller money earnings too before The Hotel Assassination. Also, if something can be purchased to progress the story with any of the characters then choose Michael.
And that's it! Please note that the investment return percentages are approximate and reported from various max money guides. I actually received a higher percentage on some of the investments on the LCN market. No one knows how the stock market truly works, but by save scumming here are the return percentages I got (if not noted, I got the reported percentage listed above):

2024.05.03 23:34 HFY_Inspired The Prophecy of the End - Chapter 22

Chapter 22 - An Abuse of Trust
Previous Chapter
The meeting had been planned out the night before, between Kyshe’s aides and Par. Kyshe had initially requested to meet the captain alone, but Amanda had insisted upon coming along and after some back and forth, Kyshe relented.
The Presh Teff did not have a grand temple that reached into the heights of the sky. The citizens of her the Teff were largely agrarian, and so Kyshe lived not in a grand temple or skyscraper but instead in a relatively modest manor. It was still grand, FAR more than a single family needed, but in her defense a large majority of it was used for administrative purposes. Assistants, messengers, accountants, and others used the majority of the space. While Kyshe still lived better than most of her people, the difference wasn’t nearly as great as one would think seeing the outside. This fact was completely and totally lost on Alex who was simply following the guide to the arranged meeting room, but not on Amanda. As she walked through the hallways following along she noted everything she saw, mentally.
As they entered the meeting hall, Amanda immediately noted the armed guards. Not police forces, obviously, as none were male. Each of them had some form of firearm in a holster across their chest, and another strapped to each leg. They appeared to be wearing some form of body armor, though she couldn't tell at a glance what it might have been made of. In all, a sight that was likely meant to intimidate. Given the general height and build of Sovalin females, It worked.
Kyshe sat at a desk with two chairs arranged in front of her, and she gestured to each of them. “Please take a seat. I won’t insult your intelligence by pretending you don’t know why you’re here so I’d like to simply begin immediately.”
“Not exactly.” Alex tried to be as cautious as he could. “I mean, there’s the obvious, but… well, let me back up a bit. I assume that I can speak of certain sensitive subjects in present company?” He nodded his head towards the guards.
“You can.” Kyshe agreed.
“Alright. Yesterday was… not planned, I am assuming, by either of our people.” Alex began. “I think Matriarch Teeshya’s response was genuine and she didn’t know what was going to happen. And I would hope that what happened was obviously not something we instigated either.”
“No. In that we agree.”
“And the fact that our guide wasn’t there meant it was a secret. We realized as much and have not told her.” Kyshe relaxed a bit. If the worst came to pass, she had already been envisioning the distasteful task of either imprisoning or executing the Noarala. If their word was true, that much could be avoided. IF their word was true. “That is appreciated. I hope to assume this means you’ve told nobody else?”
“That’s accurate. Our entire crew knows, but we’ve been careful only to speak of it amongst ourselves.” Kyshe nodded and placed her hands on the table. “Then we can properly begin. We are at an impasse here. Your knowledge of the Matriarch Zelineth represents a threat to our people. To our interests and possibly even to our world itself. The Matriarchs have convened and have set forth a number of possible ways we can address this.”
“I’d assume the first way, and the one we wish to avoid the most, is to… remove us from the equation.” Alex cautiously prompted.
“It is. I won’t claim to like you or your crew, Captain, but aside from distrust I hold no particular ill will towards you. I hold a great deal of love of our people however and if your deaths are required to keep them safe I won’t hesitate in the slightest to call for it.”
“That most assuredly won’t be necessary, Matriarch. We have no desire to antagonize yourself nor your people. Exposing this secret would not benefit us.” Amanda spoke up before Alexander could. “We of course desire to seek out benefits for ourselves in relations with your people. That is only natural. What I am here to try to convince you of is that those benefits can extend to BOTH our peoples. That our gain does not have to happen with your loss.”
Kyshe folded her arms in front of her and regarded the Human female. She’d been briefed about them by the security teams, and knew that theirs was a species where both sexes held equal office in their society. As such she knew better than to assume that the female speaking out was meant to hold more authority than the male Captain.
“I would like to believe that. But I do not. We have learned a harsh lesson in trusting others, one that we refuse to be taught to us again.”
Alex looked over at Amanda, then back at the Matriarch. “Could you elaborate on that? I have heard that your people were cheated by the Bunters, but nothing beyond that. We were kind of hoping to have a bit more time to explore and learn about your people during this trip. Before, y’know, this all happened.”
Kyshe took a deep breath, and narrowed her eyes. “It was many, many years past. When my mother was Matriarch and I was her assistant. The Bunters found our world and reached out to us. They offered us technology and assistance to let us grow beyond this world. They told us of other races and how we could fly the stars alongside them. They offered much to us, yet held their true intentions at bay.”
Alex nodded at this. “Didn’t Zelinesh warn you about them? Or was she not around then?”
Kyshe shook her head. “Zelinesh was not here, but her predecessor was. Yet the sight only works on things and people, not on concepts. She could see the contract itself, see us signing it. We thought that meant it was acceptable, but the contents of the contract were very much not in our favor. Her sight could not warn us of that.” “At first, for a decade or so, we received the aid that was promised to us. We received ships and components. A communication relay. Computers that let us interface with it and reach out to see the other races. They shared as they said they would, but when the time came to pay them back they said our money was worth nothing. They asked for metals and minerals, and yet what we have on our world was insufficient. They took much, and still it was not enough. We had no idea the worth of the minerals in our system, and when they said it would cancel our debts, we gladly paid. Only to find that the minerals we granted them were worth far, far more than we had owed. Nobody stood up for us then. We had extended our trust, and now we have been robbed of our system’s riches and given a pittance in return.”
“Holy fuck.” Alexander muttered under his breath. When Amanda had said the Bunters took advantage of the Sovalin back on the station, he had thought they’d just made a bad deal. This was worse. This was highway robbery disguised as altruism. Crippling an entire planet’s economy and its people out of greed.
“So now you come here to us. A new species. And you profess friendship to us. You arrive with light, color, and sound and spoke reassuring words to us about how you wish to befriend us. And we have heard those words before.” Kyshe slammed her palm down on the table in front of her. “And we will NOT be fooled again. We will look out for our own interests this time. And if those interests mean we must be rid of you to be secure, then that is what we must do.” She relaxed and balled her fist up before them. “Yet, perhaps, your deaths are not required.”
“No?” Alex shared another glance at Amanda, and leaned forward. “As you can imagine, I’d like to avoid that as much as possible. I am responsible for my crew. I would very much like to find a solution where everyone can feel safe and there’s no loss of life.”
“That solution is simple. You stay here. We will have to have you watched, guarded, to ensure you speak of this to no one but if you do not leave the planet then we can make arrangements that require no violence.”
“Absolutely out of the question.” Alex shook his head. “Imprisonment is not something we can abide by. At all. Imprisonment would be death for us, just of a different sort.”
The soldiers shifted as he said this, but Kyshe held up a hand and they stilled. “Yet it is the only way. We cannot trust you not to speak of our secrets with others. We cannot risk Zelineth’s existence becoming widely known. If the Bunters came to take her, we cannot fight them off.” She made a gesture towards the sky. “They have fleets of ships. We have only a handful. They have dozens of worlds, we have but the one. They have technology we require as a species to prosper, and they use it as a weapon against us. She is our only defense, and as you now know she has her limits. How then are we to proceed?”
Alex sat there for a minute, mulling it over. The Matriarch brought up many valid points. Points which he could sit and argue, but would she believe him? COULD she? He put himself in her shoes and tried to think how he could be swayed, yet…
“You can’t.” Amanda was honest and blunt. She saw what had been done, and already knew how this tale would end. “You can’t proceed. You’re trapped.”
“Precisely so. We ARE trapped. And our only hope of salvation, meager though it may be, lies within Zelinesh and her ability to guide us.”
“That isn’t entirely true. Her ability alone won’t be enough.” Amanda shook her head. “You’re trapped in paper. In clauses, contracts, in money. She can’t foretell concepts, as you said. But those concepts are the prison that’s trapping you.”
Amanda stood up and began to pace behind Alex. She always felt like she thought better on her feet. “They’ve got your entire economy in a stranglehold. You’re reliant upon them for technology, and they sell it to you at an inflated price. You can’t afford to buy it so you have to give them something else. From what I have seen, that something else is labor. I assume that the Security Chief on Farscope, her entire detail, and most of the Sovalin we saw in the Pits were all ‘exchanged’ to perform duties in the place of payment for their goods?” Kyshe’s eyes narrowed. “Yes. That’s exactly how they phrased it.” She could feel her talons digging into the soft floor covering as she felt a familiar rage build up within her.
“I thought as much. We’ve seen this pattern throughout our own history. An impoverished society is found by a rich one, and they are exploited for their natural resources. The impoverished are offered aid, offered resources and goods. What they don't realize is how easy it is to become dependent upon those goods. They become reliant upon the larger society more and more until they can no longer continue without those goods. At that point the larger society is free to demand whatever they want, and the smaller one must pay.”
Amanda stopped pacing and glanced at the door they came through. “It’s not entirely hopeless of course. There ARE ways with which we can break this entire cycle. Free your economy and your people from the Bunters influence.”
Kyshe simply nodded, and gestured for her to continue. “The first thing that needs to be done to free yourselves is going to be technological independence. So long as you are buying what you need from the Bunters, you’ll never escape them. Until you can produce local equipment and components of sufficient quality and affordability you can’t even begin to separate yourselves from them. The second is physical security. Once you’ve achieved technological independence then you need to ensure that the Bunters cannot take by force what they used to take by bargaining.”
“I concur. I suppose now that you will say that Humanity will step in and aid us in both of those endeavors? At great cost to yourselves, that you offer freely without regard to the price?” Kyshe shook her head. “You understand our plight well enough, yes. Yet how are we to trust that by removing ourselves from the Bunters we are not replacing them with yourselves? That we won’t find ourselves once again trapped by an insurmountable debt?”
Amanda suddenly lost steam. “Well, I mean… we can definitely offer our aid and our assistance, yes. And it won't be cheap but there would be eventual gains we can work out." Her mind raced as she tried to make calculations based on the potential profits of an alliance. "I mean, yes, there may be some period where we operate at a loss but we can recoup that later."
"Recoup how?"
"Well, we'd have to go over the exact figures to determine that. It's not like I can tell right now just how much of a debt could be incurred, and and whether or not there's a local resource that can..." Kyshe interrupted her immediately. “There. You see? Even here as we speak you speak of debt and resources and losses.”
Alex stood up, and walked over to Amanda. “Wait outside for me, alright?”
“Al, hold on. Let’s go over this some more. We can find some kind of…”
“No. Wait outside. I’d like to speak with the Matriarch alone.”
Amanda glanced over to the Matriarch, who lifted a hand. One of the soldiers who had escorted them in walked up and gently guided the Human female out of the door.
“We are alone, Human. Say your piece.”
Alex took a deep breath, struggling to put the chaotic thoughts in his mind in place. “Amanda is a businesswoman. All those abstracts like money, contracts, agreements, those are her bread and butter.” The Matriarch gave him a blank look. “A human idiom. They’re her specialty I mean. When we were discussing how to proceed, we thought she might be the best one of us to try to explain how we could benefit your people. Which, I am now realizing, was a mistake. I should have just come here alone, like you wanted.”
Kyshe gestured to the door. "You are here alone now."
"Yes. Yes I am. I'm not a bureaucrat or an accountant or even particularly good at math. But that's not the issue right now. The issue isn't payment or resources or contracts. The issue is TRUST." Kyshe nodded at this. "Exactly so."
He walked back over to the table, and sat down in front of Kyshe. “Trust isn't something that can be bought or sold. We can't make a contract for you all to trust us, and that's why I asked Amanda to leave. Because what I'm about to say she'll find utterly ridiculous." He stared the Matriarch in the eyes. "It's my belief that there is a non-material means by which your people can repay us. One which doesn’t involve minerals, or labor, or technology transfers. No exchange of goods. No slavery, no contracts.”
“Pretty words. Empty ones.”
“No, not empty.” Alex took another deep breath. “But not easy to convey. I’ll do my best to try to explain. Amanda wasn't the right person here because she's a numbers girl. Josh or Min could probably say this better than me but they're my subordinates in the end, so that puts it on me to explain. And to understand why those words aren't empty, I need to explain something about Humans.”
“Humans are a social species. And not just with ourselves. On our home, on Terra, we have spent a millennia with other beings. Other creatures. We rode horses into battle and used them as labor, yes. But they were also companions and friends. To some people they were as close as family. We have pets we used for hunting and protection, but then invited them into our homes as family. There are people who would value their pets over other Humans' lives. But they are not intelligent as we are. They give and received affection, but they can't stand beside us as equals. That, I think, is why we created the AIs. You heard Par and Borala talk about it. The AIs are our children, our creations, and we made them so we wouldn’t be alone.”
He stood up and gestured above him, growing more animated as he spoke. “When we finally left our world and reached space, we spread out. We colonized another world in our home system, and created stations in the void we could work at and visit. We sent out scouts in every direction trying to find out what else is out here with us, but…” his voice fell.
“The last I checked, Humans have explored over two hundred other star systems. We’ve found planets teeming with life, but not intelligence. For the entirety of our existence, we thought we were an anomaly. We searched for other intelligent life and found none. We thought we were alone in crossing that line from sapient to sophont. And then, by sheer chance, we stumbled across a ship dead in space. Intelligent life. The Bunters, the Cetari, the Fwenth. And when we found them, I can’t tell you how excited I was! We finally, finally found others out here in the void!”
“And yet when we reached Farscope, the Bunters tried to cheat us just as they did you. They didn’t give a goddamn about us for anything other than resources. The Cetari? They avoided us. Didn’t even agree to meet with us. The Fwenth… I mean, I don’t even know where to start there. They were not rude or anything, but they’re just so… alien to us. Maybe we'll make headway there but I doubt it. When we were travelling to the station we thought the rescuees were just recalcitrant because of their near-death experience. The station showed us that was their nature.”
Kyshe sat impassively in front of him as he continued. “And then, we found something new on the station.” Alex sat back down, his hands folded on his lap. He leaned in as he spoke with the Matriarch. “The very first time I laid eyes on your people I felt drawn to them. You and your people are incredibly beautiful to me. At first I thought it was just because we’re physically similar - minus the wings and feathers of course. Then when we socialized with Sophie back on the station we realized there was more than just physical traits we shared. We shared our culture with her and she appreciated it. We asked for her time and her friendship and she gave it to us freely. Where others avoided us she approached us and made us feel welcome. Where others tried to cheat us, she treated us fairly. I wanted to find out just how much more our people share. And so we came here.”
He gestured behind him. “We haven’t been here long, but it was less than a day before we’d started making friends. My engineers are enraptured with our guide and her aircar. We went to your Grand Temple and we found appreciation for the same values we have. Our arts and music held little to no interest to the other races, yet you can appreciate them with us. I don’t know if you all cry, but I swear that Teeshya was in tears when we offered to play some songs in the temple. The other races didn’t give a damn about our culture and music but you guys actually love it like we do.”
He let his arms fall, and shook his head. “And I ain’t gonna sit here and lie and say every Human is some amazing trustworthy person. A lot of us are bad. A lot of us are greedy or selfish or cruel. But even THOSE people, the worst of us, are still the same deep down. Even they seek out companions. Even they surround themselves with other people like them so they aren’t alone.”
“Humans need friends. We need people we can walk beside. People we can talk to. People with can fight with or argue with. People we can fight beside. People we can bond with. It’s an integral part of our nature, one of the deepest parts of who we are as a species. We need you beside us. That’s what you can give us. That’s what you can be to us. In a way that no other species can, you can stand beside us out here in the galaxy. If you’ll let us, neither of us will be alone out here anymore.”
As he finished, the room descended into silence. Kyshe stared intently at Alex as he’d spoken, not saying a thing. Not moving a muscle. Just sitting, listening. The soldier that was still present shifted in her armor, but Alex didn’t spare a glance towards her. At that moment only two beings existed in the world. Himself, and the Matriarch who held his future in his hand.
Eventually, she too took a deep breath, and nodded. “Then tell me, Captain, if we were to let you live, how exactly would you proceed from here?”
Alex bit his lip. This was the make or break moment. “I can make every assurance to you about how we’ll keep your secret, but I know that Humanity has to EARN your trust. We can’t do it instantly, but if you’ll give us some time we can prove ourselves. I'm offering our help right now. No contracts. No agreements. Nothing to tie your people to us. We will help you recover from what the Bunters did."
Kyshe tilted her head. "For no return? For no profit for you?"
"Well there's another saying we have. Money can't buy happiness. If our help manages to sway you over to our side, if we can become friends and stand together in the future? That would be a hell of a return for us."
“And Zelineth?”
“Will be a secret told to no one. We’ve found beings in this universe that actually seem to give a damn about us. That’s priceless to me.” Alex placed his hands palm down on the table. “There’s too much that both of us will lose if we expose your secret.”
Kyshe didn't respond to that. His words were tempting. Incredibly so. She'd often despaired that no one out there seemed to care about her people. Now the captain professed to care. He offered them friendship. But did she dare take him at his word?
She reached out to a console on the table, tapping a button and immediately the wall behind Alex glowed to life. Four familiar faces were present, each one staring intently at Alex. Now he could clearly see that yes, Sovalin did in fact cry. Teeshya was most definitely crying.
“As Matriarch of the Presh, I say now that the Captain and his crew will not be silenced. We will afford them trust in this matter.” She stared intently at Alex. “Please, please do not make us regret this.”
—--
“Okay folks. We’re gonna be changing up our stay here. Vacation’s over, it’s time to go to work.”
The last several hours had been rather intense. Amanda had spent her time going over the contracts between the Sovalin and the Bunters, looking for loopholes and oversights. Alex, on the other hand, had spent most of the time talking with Kyshe about himself and his motivations. The speech he’d given had struck a chord within her and she’d quickly gotten over her earlier trepidations.
“Vacation? Is that what we’re calling the two days we’ve spent here in total?” Ma’et had spent much of the day in her room within the Noarala Hab, miserably. Something in the local air had triggered an allergic reaction, and the antihistamine pills that Josh had given her weren’t quite up to the task of dealing with it. The shuttle had stronger chemicals available, but was currently with Alex and Amanda in the Presh Capitol, so until they returned she had to lie there, fighting the urge to rub itchy eyes while sniffling and sneezing.
“Yup. We’re officially back to work. We have a golden opportunity in front of us, courtesy of our new best friends the Sovalin. Amanda has assured us that Terrafault will be picking up the tab on this opportunity so we’re gonna make the best of it. Amanda’s gonna explain.”
“Golden Opportunity is quite accurate.” Amanda was still sorting through paperwork, but her attention was entirely on the call. “There’s bad news and good news. The bad news is that the Bunters appear to be well on their way to economically dominating these people into becoming more or less a servile class. They’re being fairly brazen about it too. The Bunters were a fully FTL civilization when they came across the Sovalin, and they didn’t hesitate to offer everything they could. And they overcharged the absolute hell out of it all. They deferred and delayed payments while flooding the local markets with state of the art tech to aid in nearly every aspect of their lives. Agriculture, Transit, Computers, Orbital infrastructure, you name it and the Bunters have ‘improved’ it. And when the avians became reliant on the tech, the debt became due. Now something like a tenth of their entire population is working to pay off the debts outside the system and that number is growing fast.”
“The good news is that the contracts that the Bunters have signed give us an opportunity that we absolutely cannot pass up. Alex’s big speech has convinced these people we’re on their side and trustworthy and thanks to that we can turn this situation around big time. The long and short of it is that the Bunters have given the Sovalin carte blanche when it comes to purchasing non-military tech. And since they knew that they were overcharging for it, they knew nobody else would want to buy it from the Sovalin. As a result they never put any restrictions on resale in any of their contracts. End result? If Humanity can aid the Sovalin in escaping from the Bunter’s influence and help them stand on their own, we have access to an absolutely immense amount of alien technology to study. And appropriate.”
Josh whistled at this. “That sounds… too good to be true. What kind of tech are we talking about anyway?”
“Just about anything you can think of. When the Bunters came by they gave out medical technology, transit, recycling, computer systems, power generation and storage, communication gear, various agricultural tools from automated weeders to powered harvesters, really you name it and they’ve put their fingers in it. Which means that while we will be getting access to an incredible amount of equipment ourselves, we have zero idea what will be useful and what won’t be. Doesn’t matter though. Even if it’s crap if nothing else the scientists back in Proxima will want to study it.”
“And the birds are OK with just giving us access to all of this?”
“Yup. We’ve been discussing it and none of it is really THEIRS to begin with. It’s all Bunter tech so it isn’t like they’re losing out on anything directly. They are a bit wary about buying our tech, but we’re working on that. The biggest hurdle is going to be the fact that the Bunters doing all of this has severely damaged their faith in others, so it’s on us to prove that we’re entirely above board on all of this. No secrets, no surprises.”
“Sounds easy enough. And by easy enough, I mean it sounds like the sort of thing only you’ll be handling. Not to try to dump that on you, but the rest of us aren’t exactly going to be useful with business negotiations.” Several dry chuckles echoed through the group chat at Josh’s observation.
Alex jumped back in at that. “Amanda’s gonna be handling the business shit, yeah. But in the mean time we’re gonna start finding ways to improve things here. For that, we’re going to be laying the groundwork for this whole damn project.”
“That sounds ominous. What groundwork needs to be done?” Ji was leaning against Trix’s aircar while they chatted. He’d been elbow deep in the drive systems when the group call had started.
“Each of you are going to be liaising with different groups over the next week. Our first goal is to prepare these people for being able to USE our tech in the first place. Swapping out shit like new harvesters or whatever is the easy part. Replacing planetary computer systems and the like will be much harder. The second goal is to provide a buffer for them so that if they need to make additional purchases to get by until we can step in, they can do so without selling more of their people into servitude.”
“For the first goal, I want Ji, Min, and Par to design an interface between the local computer systems and ours. Once we get a manufactory out here we’re going to want to put our own systems in place in tandem with theirs. That way we can work on replacing their systems slowly and not all at once with a minimum amount of disruption. If you need to return to the ship to use the fabber we’ll make arrangements.”
“So long as you let me fab a couple other things while we’re up there, that’s fine.” Min and Trix were going over some of the calculations on Min’s quickboard, debating and discussing adjustments to the aircar.
“Get the designs to Par. He can submit them to the fabber and you can pick them up when you’re back up there.” Alex didn’t even need to ask what they wanted fabbed. Those two had been laser-focused on the fun new toy since they arrived at the Noarala hab.
“Josh, while those three are getting an interface going there, medical tech is one of the bigger imports they get from the Bunters. But I distinctly remember you saying that the Sovalin can use chemical remedies instead. The Nof flock has the single largest training facility for doctors and medics on the planet. In fact every other training facility is under that one. You’re going to be coordinating with a team over there about everything you learned on the station.”
“Nearly everything I learned was just spat out of the onboard medical facilities. If you want more useful info, then we should take some samples up to the ship and load them into the autolab there.” Josh suggested. “I’m a medic and not a doctor but with the ship’s systems I can get a pretty decent base system for treatment going while we GET doctors and scientists out here to make more comprehensive adjustments and changes.”
“Let’s do that. In fact, Ji, when you or Min head up to the Fabber I want you to take Trix and Josh with you. Well, if she’s OK with it. If not find someone who’ll be OK with it and take them up. Get whatever scans or info you can while you’re up there then you’ll be joining us back on the ground.”
“Roger that.”
“Ma’et, once we bring the shuttle back and you’re feeling better we’re going to be having you ferry things around. Not the most glamorous job but an important one. When you’re not flying, feel free to offer up any suggestions you might have. I won’t pretend like I know how the hell you break into the systems you do, so I have no clue how your EW skills can be useful for this part of the plan but I know you’re resourceful as hell and will find some way to contribute.”
“Just get back here so I can breathe through my nose again. And so you can see me when I’m flipping you off.”
“After we finish all this prep, we’re going to be heading back to JR692. As a part of this whole deal we’re offering the Sovalin our mining rights to the system. Terrafault’s agreed through Amanda to reimburse us for it. The birds will need raw materials and since the Bunters have claim to everything not on Kiveyt or its orbit, we’re going to help them in that regard too.”
“As a gift?”
“Technically, no.” Amanda cut in. “The mining rights to the system are being used to purchase the Sovalin’s access to Bunter tech. But we are overpaying by such an extreme amount that it is essentially a gift. A necessary one. Once we get a manufactory out here they’re going to need raw resources after all.”
“Also it’s a good way for us to put our money where our mouth is.” Alex mentioned as well. “The end goal is to help them stand on their own without having to rely on anyone at all, Human or Bunter. But getting there won’t be easy and it won’t be cheap. They were adamantly against handouts or charity at first but the reality is that it can’t be avoided. So once we’ve done as much as we can here locally, we’re going back to JR692 to complete the original survey mission, but we’re also going to be bringing back as much as we can to help get them by for now. And while we’re out there, we’re going to be sending our emergency beacon back to Proxima. I’m a little uncomfortable being without it when we know there’s hostile FTL-capable species out here, but I don’t want to leave them out to dry while we navigate all the bureaucratic crap. If we’re here on Kiveyt at least they’ll know that we haven’t skipped out on them.”
Ma’et sniffed loudly, then asked “What’s the plan if the Tanjeeri are still in the system?”
“Come in further out than before, high above the ecliptic. Run a full scan of the system before we approach, and abort if they’re waiting around. If they’re gone, we pick up where we left off. If they’re around, we come back here and come up with a new plan.”
“And if they’re there but hiding in wait?”
“Then we get to find out first hand how much of a gap there is between our tech and theirs.”

The past few days had been excruciatingly boring for Trksehn. After the big…. WHATEVER it was that happened at the Temple that nobody would explain, things had gotten busy as hell. The humans had been flying their shuttle nonstop around the planet, and nothing they’d been doing had needed a guide or an interpreter. She couldn’t indulge in working on her Soranet, since half the parts they needed still had yet to be ‘fabbed’ as the Humans kept saying. It really wasn’t a Soranet anymore, truth be told. The same basic shape and design, sure, but with some massive changes inside.
Working together with the humans on the car had been one of the best experiences of her life. Everything they did, every change they made, they made with her involvement. Every change no matter how minute was run past her. Every time they opened it up to make one adjustment or the other they had her do it and walked her through it step by step. It was perfectly clear and obvious to her that the two engineers didn’t need her around for any of it, but they were both quite clear about wanting her involvement in all of it and she loved every moment they’d spent together huddled around a schematic or wiping away grease and lubricant from her feathers.
Ji had also thrown a fit when he’d seen the control surfaces for the aircar. “You have this incredibly sleek streamlined gorgeous vehicle and you ruin it by putting all these ugly spikes and blades everywhere?” was his exact statement, and while Trksehn… ‘Trix’ as they loved to call her, didn’t mind at first she had to agree that the mockups on Min’s quickboard definitely looked better. She was still concerned that only having steering on the tail end of the car instead of on all four engine mounts would make the car more difficult to control, but Ji had reassured her that wouldn’t be the case.
With nothing else to do she had taken to chatting with friends, but she’d also found that to be lacking as well. For one, most had decided that her stories of the Humans taking an interest and actually helping out with tuning up her Aircar had been fictitious. “Why would they care about an aircar when they have interstellar ships and a shuttle that can fly beyond atmo?” “Stop trying to sound like you’re friends with them. They’re just staying in your Hab.” “It’s getting pretty pathetic the way you keep pretending.”
After an hour of trying to explain herself (And getting absolutely nowhere) she’d chucked the thing off the bed in disgust, and lay there feeling miserable. None of it was her fault, she’d been volunteered for the duty and tried to do it well. She was trying to start a conversation when she’d brought up the aircar. Why was it so difficult to imagine the Humans being interested?
A knock at the door brought her out of her self-pity and she heaved a sigh as she stood up to get it. Ji was waiting for her outside. “Hey Trix. Got a few?”
“A few of what?”
“Got some time? We have something we want to run past ya.”
“Oh, sure.” She closed the door and let Ji lead her to the gathering area where the rest of the Humans were at, while inwardly mocking those who didn’t believe her. The Humans were calling for her whether they believed it or not.
Alex raised a hand in greeting. “Good to see you girl. Sorry we haven’t been really involved in much right now, but things got hectic. We could use your help right now though.”
“Of course. What do you need?”
Alex glanced over and nodded at Josh. Josh cleared his throat and gestured outside the hab, to the square where the shuttle was parked at. “Several of us need to return to the ship for a bit. We have to pick up some gear and while we’re at it, we’d like your help in learning a bit more about your people.”
“Up on the ship?” Trix couldn’t help but grin at that. Those jealous losers wouldn’t believe her if she told them that she was going out to visit the Humans’ ship, but they didn’t matter at all. “I mean, yeah, absolutely!”
“Hold up. When I say learning a bit more about your people, I mean we want to run some medical tests.” Josh made a ‘lowering’ motion with his hands. “They won’t hurt, they aren’t invasive, but it’s not something we’re willing to do without your consent.”
“Oh. Uh…” Trix glanced down at herself, and looked up a bit more apprehensively. “What exactly do you mean by tests?”
“Well, we want to be able to offer your people medicinal technology and aid in the future.” It wasn’t a lie, and if he wasn’t mentioning the Bunters then there was no need to elaborate. “I’ve been going over some basic info with the Nof physicians, but we just need some samples and a couple scans so we can tell how much of medical techniques will be safe for you. The process is entirely painless and there’s zero risk involved.”
Trix bit the inside of her lip as she considered, but eventually nodded. “I mean… I suppose so?”
Josh reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder, shaking his head. “It’s not as bad as whatever you’re imagining. If you’re nervous or uncomfortable about it we can find someone else…”
“NO! No I mean I’d like to go up. I just don’t know what you mean by scans and samples.” Trix wasn’t about to lose out on an opportunity to visit the ship, even if they were being cagey about what they needed exactly.
“Oh. We just need saliva and blood samples along with EKG, MRI, CT, and PET scans. Most of those you guys do already for diagnostics, but they’re just not as precise as our instrumentation allows for. The samples are so we can see the effects our pharmaceuticals would have on your people. We don’t want to test anything unknown and risk anyone’s health.”
Trix was still a bit uncertain, but took a deep breath and nodded. “That’s fine. If it’ll help people and I won’t be hurt, there’s no good reason for me to refuse. Plus I want to see your ship.”
“Atta girl!” Alex thumped her lightly on the back and nodded over to Ji. “Ma’et will be flying you, Josh, and Ji up there in an hour. Expect roughly 90 minutes transit to and from the ship, and probably…” Alex had to stop and do some math in his head.
With only 4 fingers per hand it wasn’t surprising that the locals had a base-8 math system. Their planet’s orbit was considerably closer to a circle and their axial tilt much less pronounced than on earth, so splitting the day into two 8-period segments (8 local ‘hours’ of daylight and 8 ‘hours’ of nighttime) was the norm. In Terran units, the days would have been about 28 and a half hours long though so trying to convert terran hours to Kiveyt time wasn’t always a quick process.
“I dunno. Let’s say 10 local hours total on the ship. Rough guess. Might be more or less but we have facilities onboard for food and rest if it goes long.”
Min was looking sulky, and Trix reached over to shake her a bit. “What’s the matter babe?” She still didn’t quite get that bit of lingo but she’d heard Josh use the phrase once and when Trix repeated it to Min, she’d thought it was hilarious.
“Ji won the RPS to take you up there. I was going to show you around but I’ve got to work on other things down here.” Ji walked over and set a hat down on his sister’s head, pushing the brim down to cover her eyes. Ignore her. She lost fair and square. She’s just mad I always know when she’s going to throw paper.”
Trix knew that RPS was some arcane decision making tool that Ji and Min often used to settle debates by shaking hands and making gestures, but she still didn’t entirely follow. Something about a rock breaking a blade but being broken by paper? How do you break a rock with paper?
Oh well, that was between the two of them and not her business. “Uhm, alright. Then when will we be leaving?” Ji grinned and waved at the entrance to the Hab. “Right now. We’ll have anything you need up there, so there’s zero reason to wait. Up, up and away.”

2024.05.02 15:56 ThePhantomMushroom Icarly New (2021) is there any appeal to it?

First off, I want to say that I only saw the first eight episodes and really regretted most of it. I'm not sure if I want to even continue watching. Though I keep seeing comments calling it different rather than talking about the quality. So it makes me wonder, am I missing something?
I enjoyed most of Dan Schneider's work from Drake and Josh, Zoey 101, Icarly, Victorious and still do as I rewatched most of these with Paramount+. Even got into Sam and Cat recently since I missed out on that one. The Amanda Show was meh for me and the Henry Danger franchise not so much probably because it was co-exec with someone else which lack a lot of what made these series special. I even still love Scott Fellow's work on Big Time Rush and Ned Declassified. This also includes House of Anibus and recently, I am Frankie.
What do the ones I enjoy have in have in common?
A good premise/overarching narrative.
What is Icarly New's (2021) premise/overarching narrative?
Characterisation
Why is Icarly New's (2021) characterization so off?
Villains
Icarly New's (2021) villains seem really lackluster
My thoughts
There's a reason why a lot of these kinds of series do this because it's a great storytelling, especially done well, so why does it have to be different? It tries to do a lot of what the original and other live action comedies have done before but in a very thoughtless or lackluster way. If it's meant to be different, then why does it have to bear the franchises name? This entire series just feels like an afterthought, tbh and I'm just gonna say I don't think it's even less than decent. I also think Zoey 102 suffers similar problems and makes me wish Paramount would stop bringing these series back if they can't get good writers to do these.

2024.05.02 02:48 ILikeMyouiMina Anyone ever had a "Smosh dream"?

I had the weirdest dream today and I wanted to share with everyone LMAO
I had a dream where everyone in the Smosh cast was Filipino (my nationality) and that they were people I saw in my everyday life.
It was set in my old high school. I was best friends + classmates with Keith and Noah. Other people in our class were Shayne, Peter, and Marcus. Amanda, Ian, and Anthony were PROFESSORS. Courtney was in the other class but she was always in the hallway with her laptop. I have no idea why but apparently Spencer was one of my bullies.
One day in the dream, Spencer bullied me so badly that I ended up crying on the way home. I was with Noah and he was comforting me while we were waiting for the bus. On the way to the bus station, we encountered various Smosh cast and crew like Luke (he did not have his laptop with him), Olivia, and Tomey.
When we reached the bus station, Noah sat down with me and the last thing I remember was when Noah pointed to someone far away and said "Si Keith ba yon?" which means "Is that Keith?" in Filipino and he said it with a perfect Filipino accent LMAO
I think this is my sign that I've been watching too much LMAO I've had Smosh as background noise for a long time while I worked on school stuff

2024.05.01 14:29 AdditionalWar8759 We signed an NDA: Episode from May 1st, “We Three Signed an NDA (w/Lucinda Pace”

Ariana and Sandoval’s house and Ariana’s new house (Timestamp: 1:12:11) - Amanda: Something I'm dying to know is, it's been such a contentious topic on Vanderpump Rules this season, kind of like the money about the house and the authors and also the furniture. What are you kind of able to share from kind of your more expert perspective? - Lucinda: Yeah. So what I will say, and I don't want to speak for Ariana, but I'll speak to what I know. So what that he has put something forward now that's going to delay things even more. - Either Ann or Amanda say What?! - Lucinda: That's what I was told. I think. I'm not really sure she explained it to me. And I said, what is that? - Ann: Can I throw a theory? - Lucinda: I feel like I know a lot and I didn't know what it was. - Ann: Yeah - Lucinda: I was like, what's that? I have not talked to him. I've avoided him. The closest I've gotten to him was that day that we filmed when he was upstairs and I was downstairs. - Ann: Can we talk about that too? - Lucinda: The day that we filmed. Yeah, The day of my scene a couple episodes ago, when I was in the house going over the inventory with Ariana, was the same day that Ann was fired. And the same day as the water tasting. - Lucinda: And the day before, or two days before, we were supposed, Ariana and I were supposed to film, and you and Ariana were supposed to film, and he was not there. And that's the day that Maya got rushed to the hospital. So I showed up to film. - Ann: Yeah. - Lucinda: Ann was there. She was like, Ariana just left because Maya had to go to the vet. And all the crew was all there. We were all waiting, hoping like she was going to come back. We waited for like an hour. And they were like, we're just going to reschedule, you know, come back in a couple of days. - Ann: Once the vet did the x ray and saw all this stuff in Maya's tummy. Yeah. It was like, oh, we're going to have to pump. - Lucinda: Maya's wild. - Ann: Oh, Maya's so wild. I fucking miss her so much. - Lucinda: Oh, I got to see her the other day. In her new house! In her new yard! You know what? I feel like the scene that I was in didn't really well convey, like, why I was there. So why I was there was because she had asked me to make a list of all the things that they had bought - Ann: Right - Lucinda: Which I had. Because I have all the receipts. - Ann: Yes. - Lucinda: Receipts, proof - Ann: Timeline - Lucinda and Amanda: Screenshots - Lucinda: I have it all. So, and the way that, you know, a lot of their stuff was bought was he would buy stuff, she would buy stuff. Like, they didn't have like a joint account that we bought things from. And when I was doing that, because we had had like a phone call that was on a previous episode, and I had just kind of made a list of everything that I was giving to her attorney. So people were like, why are you getting involved? - Ann: Because it's your job. - Lucinda: Well, I was asked and I wanted to. - Ann: Yeah. And also you're friends with Ariana - Amanda: You're the one who knows, like you have the receipts, like you just have the information. It makes sense to go to the person with the information. - Lucinda: So anyway, I went over to go over things with her so that she could pass those on to her attorney because what she wanted to do, and I think it was revealed in the after show, and I don't really watch the after show, but I need to. I've seen a couple. - Lucinda: And what she wanted to do was, in her counter offer to his, we'll call it an offer to buy a house, she was proposing that they donate all of the furniture that they had bought together. - Ann: Love - Lucinda: To a woman’s shelter - Ann: Love - Lucinda: Which is a lovely thing to do - Ann: Because she’s lovely - Ann: Yes - Lucinda: And we knew, we knew he was going to lose his mind because he's so attached to like things. Like the fact that she bought that mirror and he thinks he bought it. The receipt says she bought it. The receipt says she bought it. It’s right there. And he was saying on the after show that we went together and we bought it together. And that is true. We were shopping him and I that day, but… - Ann: It's on her card. - Lucinda: It's on her card. It’s hers - Ann: Yeah she paid for it - Lucinda: So I told her that she should take the mirror and put it in her room. And that's going to be her gym mirror. I don't know if she will. - Lucinda: So there's a lot of things in the house, because for the most part, they didn't really have anything that we didn't buy for them as designers. So I don't know if she's going to take, and I told her, I was like, I think it's okay to bring some of the things into this new house. I said, you're in a good mindset. Who fucking cares? - Lucinda: But she is moved into her new house for the most part, but the old house is kind of still the way it is. Like she hasn't really taken anything out of there yet. - Ann: Oh, out of the bedroom? - Lucinda: Mmhmm - Ann: Oh, that's tough. - Lucinda: So the new house is we're working on it now. - Ann: Yay! - Lucinda: It’s super cute - Ann: I saw pictures. It's beautiful. - Lucinda: It's like a hillside home. - Amanda: Oh, my god - Lucinda: So much charm again, flippers that should be in jail, but I'm going to fix that. Yeah, I'm going to fix that. Yeah. So she's you know, she's excited. We're excited. We're going to have some really cool stuff
